#i ship penny with winter ok

ok so can you explain how nnd have more buildup then other ships (not a rant)
Is the "not a rant" like, an instruction for me? Because I am very bad at not going off on a rant but the good news is I'm not currently interested in giving the full overview anyways so I'll stick to the main points of their buildup.
This is going backwards a little but looking at volume 9, I mean, it's pretty clear? Penny's death is a big part of Ruby's current breakdown and it's because Penny is so deeply important to Ruby. And when you consider how different parts of the scene with Neo's constructs are framed? When not!Penny starts talking, everything goes quiet. No fighting, no running, just not!Penny talking to Ruby, and Ruby listening. This is where you put the love interest in a scene all about an antagonist using the protagonist's emotional weak spots!
Neo was trying so hard to hit Ruby where it hurts, and all the other attempts include physical violence, but this? This just just emotional. This is what Neo thinks will hit the hardest, and from a meta-perspective it's what the writers think is the most meaningful part.
Going back though, I feel like it's a little bit obvious to tell how important Ruby is to Penny, right? Like, we all know that? First friend, first to treat her like a person, etc. etc.
The other way around, up to v3 there's not that much for how important Penny is to Ruby, really. I'll accept that. There's nothing necessarily distinguishing Ruby's grief over being too late to save Penny from her grief over being too late to save Pyrrha later either. But v7 is when Penny returns, and it's interesting! Really interesting!
This is where Penny starts getting consistently framed as Ruby's love interest. It's like that one post about her return in v7e1, "goddamn anime love interest framed by the fucking moon", if I'm quoting it right. And the v7 intro showing an image of a very happy Penny at the end of the phrase "in time you'll find through love your power just shines" is also some love interest framing. Then of course the election night episode pairs up a couple of characters, Ren and Nora of course, Blake and Yang going dancing, and then... Ruby and Penny hanging out. And of course the repeated important conversations happening, and the thing where Ruby almost fell asleep on Penny's shoulder which is just like, such a ship tease moment.
But v7 isn't that clear about it, so I get if that's not very convincing. I think it's more than any other ship has but the really big stuff gets there in v8.
The volume where they really Cannot Stop Hugging, and where Ruby promises they'll see eachother again soon, and Ruby's silver eyes are (not for the first time!) suddenly able to activate when Penny's in danger, and Ruby holds onto Penny so tightly - so afraid to let go because something is wrong and she can't lose Penny, and they all use the relic of creation to save Penny before they do anything else (and yeah I hate that scene but it's meaningful and I won't deny that it's meaningful), and yeah saving Penny is the theme of the volume because she was the winter maiden but for Ruby it's not about that. She can't lose Penny.
And then she loses Penny and she literally passes out the moment she finds out.
To bring it all back down to something simple, when the antagonist torments the protagonist with someone close to her saying the words "can you imagine what that's like? To be completely and utterly failed, time and again, by someone who meant the world to you?" after which the protagonist is more distraught then we've seen her all volume, in a volume all about how distraught she is all the time? That person meant the world to the protagonist too.
So yeah, I'm inclined to say they've got more buildup than any noncanon ships, you are free to point something out to me if there's a ship with a ton of buildup that I'm somehow missing but like... I'd be shocked.

what sort of dynamic do you think luztoye has?
ohohoho anon... welcome.... i am wearing my luztoye dunce cap...
ok so i've expanded on this a little bit in little talks (the next chapter of which is coming out sunday asdfghj), but basically. the whole thing about luztoye for ME is that they're a tragedy in a sitcom.
like. people are so distracted by luz's general utilization in bofb mediums as being the comic relief and the jokester compared to others that oftentimes i think that luz in fics just lacks... depth? like, yeah he's funny, he's got this, he's got that, but he's human. he's a person, and a traumatized veteran at that. he's got dark days and thoughts and moods and actions, just like anyone else. i wish we could've seen more of how he acted in the last patrol, for example
and in contrast toye is often seen as the 'dark' one and the serious one which YEAH he is especially compared to luz, but he's like. he's a fuckin nice dude bro! the horse scene in day of days, him listening and empathizing with guarnere while still defending winters in a rational way, wanting to get back to the front line and be with everyone else. layers people!!
so for me a REQUIRED part of understanding luztoye is understanding the fucking layers the ship can have.
now that THAT's out of the way we can jump into the dynamic!! and part of the reason i have the Luztoye Fever is BECAUSE of this dynamic because it's translatable and able to change and warp and move, but at the end of the day, it's still the same dynamic.
from the two (three if you're flexible) interactions we get of luztoye in the miniseries, there's the general equation of a match (toye) plus a cigarette (luz).
luz instigates most things - dust on your jump wings, got a penny, etc - but the only reason that he can at ALL is because toye plays off of him - just give me a drink, Shut Up - which makes them SO interesting to write because like. that's an INCREDIBLE fucking dynamic.
in writing them they almost remind me of other couples in television like that (jess and nick in new girl comes most blaringly to mind) which makes my brain go WHOOOO and which makes the entire ship, dynamic, and methods of communication throughout their relationship so interesting to me
and nonnie i have to THANK YOU for asking me this because i have been thinking about this for entirely too long because i am an unfortunate victim of Luztoye Fever and you have given me Stimuli <3
anyways. thank you for coming to my ted talk

Have you settled who will be with who or are you going with the flow?
I have like a tier list for the ships in AZRE tbh; Top Tier is the ships that will definitely be happening or are already canon, Middle Tier is those that might happen, or is hinted at, but it honestly depends on how the story goes and if they naturally happen, and Bottom Tier are the ships that I do like or are cute together, but aren't gonna happen.
Obviously, this is spoilers but I'm always open about spoilers now in AZRE since it's been going on for years.
Top Tier:
Monochrome (Blake/Weiss)
Golden Fleece (Yang/Eirian)
Mangosteel (Ruby/Penny/Sun)
Manticores (Adam/Zanthus)
Snowbirds (Qrow/Winter) COMPLICATED OK
Aurora Solitarus (Aurora/Whitley)
Lightning & Glitch (Harriet/Giang) EVEN MORE COMPLICATED
Painted Rocks (Argenta/Ilia)
Middle Tier:
Valkos (Nora/Pyrrha) - Was previously going to be totally canon, but the story right now isn't really pushing the ship to me.
Pyrruby (Pyrrha/Ruby) - Ruby has an unrequianted crush on Pyrrha.
Venice (Ruri/Neo) - Flirty villain relationship but doesn't actually go anywhere.
Bank Robbery (Ruri/Roxanne) - Ruri has a crush, but Roxanne is more ambiguous.
Emercury (Emerald/Mercury) - Torn between lovers and best friends. Both options are great.
Bottom Tier:
Bolti (Eirian/Ruri)
Angoras (Eirian/Velvet)
Reflections (Giang/Marrow)
Pyrrhic Victories (Pyrrha/Roxanne)
These are the major ones that I remember right now. I have loads of ships I love that won't happen, but I'm obviously not gonna put them all here.
Thanks for asking! Feel free to come and talk about what ships you enjoy!

Some ships for the new ask, becuase you lot really like having a flooded inbox:
Arkos
Beta Testers
Arctic Winter
Adam x Yang (was it called Raging Dragon?)
Nuts and Dolts
Togachako
Kachako
Katsuki x Shinsou
BakuDeku
IzuOcha
Free Space (I dunno, you guys should get to pick too).
oh my god this is so many sobs.
arkos.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
genuinely cannot stand that like 90% of her character is based around this boring white boy who “didn’t put her on a pedastal” when i’m pretty sure he did exactly that with the cereal moment lmao. justice for pyrrha.
beta testers.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
i was so robbed with them not even getting one scene together like how dare their storylines be paralleled like that & we don’t have anything to show for it !! bullshit. penny is now flying above mantle with whitley ✨
arctic winter.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
that’s my ship !! there was so much potential in just their characters alone & if mkek won’t treat them right then i will take custody & do so myself. no complex characters, parallels or relationships for those monkeys with typewriters lmao.
raging bull.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
another ship with a lot of potential, especially in darkfic or in an enemies & lovers type situation. the way both their angry streaks could spark off of each other like a match to a fuse is just so delicious.
nuts & dolts.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
genuinely one of the only ships on the show that i could peg as soulmates, especially from the way ruby just accepted her wholeheartedly & did everything to love penny for who she was, with penny loving her so wholesomely in return. it makes me sad that the writing eventually destroyed their story & made it into that.
togachako.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
i know these two wouldn’t be canon because shonen doesn’t play with wlw ships but dear god i would give my left nonexistant testicle for it to be canon because there’s so much there!! they’re so beautiful together & i love them sobs.
kacchako.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
my otp since day one while watching this show & i love all the little nuances in their characters that would work so well together, as well as there being some much needed spice in this relationship that isn’t in the others which isn’t as appealing to me. putting these two together with toga would be my endgame ot3 on god, it would be so good sobs.
shinbaku.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
i hadn’t thought of these two but they would be interesting! i love the fanart for them 👀👀👀
bakudeku / izuocha.
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
putting these two together bc my opinion on both are mostly the same in that i just don’t like deku as a protaganist or a character so i don’t really ship him with anyone, i think both bakugo & ochako could do far better with other characters.

I just saw a post saying Ruby is probably one of the smartest YA adventure protagonists because she figured out the big twist of her character arc and it gives me thoughts. (And yes I will gush about how smart Ruby is and always has been).
1) Knowing CRWBY, since they TOLD us what we already thought we knew, there's probably another twist to Summer's fate we have no way of figuring out yet. Or her fate was exactly that, but somehow ten times worse than we think.
2) This is definitely a refreshing story telling choice. It feels the same as when two characters just talk about their problems and avoid a bunch of unnecessary conflict. It's just so nice for the writers to go 'ok so most of the audience will pick up that the Hound had silver eyes. No need to pretend Ruby didn't notice too. Or put together what that means. After all, she knows just as much about Summer as the audience does."
3) Ok time to gush about how smart Ruby Rose is. I've always been of the opinion that, were we to put this in dnd terms, she has crazy high Wis and low Int. The low Int comes from scenes like her struggling with homework in volume 1, not knowing definitions of basic words in volume 2 (on the air ship with Oobleck), her conversation with Winter in volume 3 where she tried to act more proper than she was, and her terrible sense of geography in volume 4 when she vastly underestimated how long the journey to Haven was on foot.
Her Wis, on the other hand, is amazing. There's a reason she and Jaune are team leaders. In players and pieces, she and Jaune came up with strategies on the fly to defeat difficult grimm and started leading their teams mid fight. Jaune's strategy was to impale the deathstalker with its own stinger. Ruby's was to be slingshotted up a cliff so she can decapitate a stuck nevermore. And time and again we see the two of them come up with brilliant strategies to win fights (though sometimes not in the most eloquent words. "Hit it harder!"). I won't list all of them, because I will doubtless forget some (or get sidetracked by Jaune's strategic mind when this post is about Ruby), but some of the most brilliant strategies on Ruby's end were using Jinn to stop time against the Leviathan, and giving a protagonist speech to goad Cordovin into attacking her so she could dive down the barrel of a canon and blow it up from the inside.
In terms of plot stuff, Ruby also has plenty of "figuring things out" moments. V3 really stands out to me here. She figured out Yang's hallucination probably was some form of tampering when she talked to Velvet (something no other character in show figured out), spotted Emerald in the crowd and connected that it was probably Emerald and Mercury, and as soon as Penny vs Pyrrha was announced knew that it was going to end very badly even before Mercury said anything. This last one is another point of "she knew exactly what the audience was thinking", even if it wasn't as long between learning the information and payoff as summer will be. Also I have to shout out her use of a rocket propelled locker to fly to the ship Torchwick was controlling after Ironwood's ship went down. That moment really solidified Ruby as one of my fav characters.
Admittedly, in v6 she did not figure out Maria had silver eyes, but she was lacking the imagery in the op we all had. She did (along with the rest of the team) come up with a pretty solid plan to steal an atleasean airship.
And v8, as unexpected as it is that she pieced together what happened to Summer, I am way more impressed with the plan the team came up with for the vault of creation and for fighting Ironwood. Everything about that plan is just so meticulously thought out. The one thing they didn't account for is Cinder.

Vine’s death/sacrifice really kinda messes with the “themes” of this volume, the idea of not sacrificing anyone to save others. I guess self-sacrifice is considered ok because of Hazel and Penny, but I just think about their conversation with JRY, with their talk of doing everything possible to save a beloved teammate.
Yeah, self-sacrifices are a whole different ballgame in RWBY. It’s framed as heroic to do everything possible to save an individual, or for an individual to sacrifice themselves for everyone else. However, it’s not framed as heroic for others to sacrifice an individual to save the whole. So the idea of saving Oscar at any cost is presented as the unambiguously good thing to do... with the show largely ignoring the reverse question of, “So it’s okay to sacrifice hundreds or thousands of people--and the safety of an entire city housing the majority of the city below--for one?”
There are admittedly differences in terms of the presumed fatality of each situation. Meaning, Hazel, Vine, and Penny are framed as having to die or lots more people will definitely die: Salem will get JRYOE, the Ace Ops + Qrow will perish, Cinder will get the power and do horrific things with it (even if this supposed inevitability isn’t executed well. Example: there apparently just isn’t time to heal Penny). In contrast, Oscar is presented as a case where they can still save him and keep others alive. Obviously it all turned out the best it could--because these are the heroes and the plot ensures things go well--but the show doesn’t grapple with that risk, despite RWBY naming an episode after it. We don’t engage with the fact that JYR were 100% willing to let an entire city perish to save their teammate. It’s a heartwarming characterization from one perspective, absolutely, but the flipside is that they’re licensed huntsmen in a position of authority and their willingness to abandon the vast majority of a nation for one guy is... arguably horrifying. These issue is only exacerbated by this decision not being a one-off thing. Ruby’s desire for a perfect solution led her to trapping most of the Atlas/Mantle citizens there and then prioritizing two other teammates--Nora and Penny--over helping the people, despite her inability to do anything to assist those teammates. She isn’t defending them from anything (prior to the Hound’s arrival), doesn’t have the skills to heal them, they’re not even conscious to ask her to stay with them... she just decided that sitting at her friends’ bedside, doing nothing, was more important than helping the people who were currently in life threatening danger. Oscar was in life threatening danger too, but JYR were still in the same position of being official protectors of the people who said, “No. Our friend is more important than the whole nation. We’ll let it burn for the chance to save him.”
Since I just started Voyager (side note: I WOULD DIE FOR JANEWAY) I’m reminded of how often Star Trek as a franchise emphasizes these moral questions. Not just in the classic “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,” but also when it comes to any position of authority. Captains and Commanders have to grapple with whether they’re able to send an individual--likely a friend--into a deadly situation to help the rest of the ship, like ordering your Chief Engineer into dangerous territory to fix something. They also have to grapple with whether they’re able to leave people behind for the sake of the ship and how much danger it’s ethical to put the whole crew in to continue trying to save the few (something that takes center stage in numerous episodes). Star Trek, though far from perfect as a franchise, largely achieves a great balance between having characters be hopeful, pushing the odds, upholding the importance of every life... but also recognizing that, as the authority here, they cannot put the life of one individual over the entirety of the ship (not unless the entire ship agrees to take that risk. Hence, The Search for Spock). They cannot prioritize their personal desires and needs over that of their crew... but that’s precisely where the RWBY group has ended up. Frankly, this wouldn’t be as much of a problem if the show had just made them into rogue entities, rather than licensed huntsmen who are very much using their authority to gain power over the people they’re not prioritizing (Ruby starts her video by telling the world she’s a huntress, Jaune uses his credentials to get people to follow him). It’s the authority that’s the problem. If a civilian that happens to have a talent for fighting decides to defend their friends instead of helping the people, fine. We may not personally agree with that decision, but it’s theirs to make. The problem is our heroes are huntsmen. They have a duty and they are continually ignoring that duty despite reaping the benefits of their position. Someone with the authority of a huntsmen can sacrifice themselves to save the people, or to save a friend. They cannot, however, willingly sacrifice the people for themselves, or a friend. And yes “sacrifice” includes not just active harm (keeping Atlas trapped), but also increasing the risk of harm (not wanting the whale to be bombed) and passiveness (sitting in a mansion) when it’s their responsibility to protect others.
What was it Weiss said at Mountain Glenn?
“It's a job. We all had this romanticized vision of being a Huntress in our heads! But at the end of the day, it's a job to protect the people and whatever we want, will have to come second.”
The characters have completely forgotten that... and the writers have too. Now, “whatever we want” is framed as the heroic thing to do. Ruby wants a miracle despite all evidence to the contrary, so all the people they’ve successful evacuated have to remain in danger until she gets one. The JRY group want their teammate back, so the army will just have to keep dying until they get him. (The fact that they eventually agree to the bomb going off whether they’re still in there or not--something I quite like--doesn’t erase that they initially wanted the Ace Ops to not drop the bomb at all.) Ruby doesn’t want to have to choose between Mantle and Atlas, so both cities just have to lose out on three of the very few people who exist to protect them while they’re torn apart by monsters. “Both houses deserve to be saved!” says the firefighter, standing there and refusing to help either. Inevitably, both burn down.
The willingness to leave behind an individual for the whole--something which, I should point out, exists in the “Are you willing to leave the few in Mantle for all of Atlas + a large number of refugees?” question-- isn’t just the sacrifice of the individual, it’s also a sacrifice of the authority. Are you willing to live with the guilt of this decision? Are you willing to sit with that choice and accept any consequences that might come your way, including others’ hatred of you for failing to achieve perfection? Ironwood was. He knew he was hurting Mantle, knew no one had been able to come up with a perfect solution, and decided that helping the whole world was worth it. Others despising him was worth getting communications back up and (he thought) defeating Salem. That’s a sacrifice, one that makes Winter’s “You sacrificed nothing!” line sound particularly ridiculous. What has the group sacrificed lately? I don’t mean what they’ve lost--what’s been taken from them--but what they’ve willingly given up to help others. I can’t think of much, especially not in Volume 8. Ruby never even made the choice at all, let alone accepted the drawbacks of it.
RWBY wants to be a complex, morally gray show, but you cannot write that and have heroes who insist on that fairy tale ending. Something has to give and, inevitably, RWBY keeps supplying that ending instead of forcing the characters to grow. If they want a dark, imperfect world then they need protagonists like Ironwood. No, not crazy, murderous, keep-him-away-from-me Ironwood, but the Ironwood of early Volume 7 who was willing to acknowledge that sometimes perfection is impossible. Sometimes it’s your duty to just get the best outcome possible, not the best you’d hoped for. Sometimes you have to make incredibly hard decisions and shoulder the weight of that because you accepted this responsibility when you took on the role of leader. The group hasn’t accepted a thing and Ruby absolutely didn’t accept the responsibility of seizing power and presenting herself as the world’s leader. Instead, they’ve reverted to their characterizations at the beginning of Mountain Glenn. What do you mean I can’t make the world perfect by wishing it was so? Fine, if I can’t have perfection than I won’t accept anything at all.

7 Things I Want to See in RWBY Volume 8
So with Volume 8 being stalled because of the pandemic (though they are still working on it in increments) I thought about doing a post about things I would like to see in the next volume. This is similar to the “Questions I Want Answered in Volume 7″ before that volume came out, but this one will be more centered on the actual story and characters rather than the broader stuff I wanted in 7. These have no real order, just seven random things I want to see. Here we go:
1. More Varied Character Interactions
Tumblr media
This is one of the bigger sticking points I’ve had with the show in general rather than a problem I had with V7 itself. It’s no secret that one of the biggest complaints about RWBY from even it’s most hardcore stans is the lack of interpersonal interactions between characters outside of their given pairs. Ruby only talks to Weiss, Blake only talks to Yang, Ren only talks to Nora, and vice versa.
Yang and Weiss had moments in Volume 5, but when was the last time Ruby and Blake had a conversation? Volume 1? What about Yang and Qrow? A big part of his arc in Volume 5 was his alcoholism and Yang was nowhere near that. Ruby and Yang are also big offenders. Weiss and Blake had one small moment in the mine and then went right back to being perfect strangers. Weiss and Jaune haven’t “talked” since volume 2 (I don’t count their dialogue after she got stabbed in V5) and I can’t recall anytime Ren and Nora have ever had a conversation with Yang and Blake. These kids are supposed to be friends who have been through thick and thin together, but they seem more like strangers outside of their supposed “pairings”.
The preview with Yang interacting with Oscar, Jaune, and Ren gave me some hope. Hopefully the show continues it.
2. More Information on Summer Rose
Tumblr media
Volume 7 dropped the only notable information we’ve had about Summer since Qrow’s talk about the Silver Eyes in Volume 3, that being that Salem was likely responsible for Summer’s death. It’s now time to finally get more information on her. Who was she as a character? What was her semblance? What was her weapon? How did others view her? What is her connection to Ozpin? Why was she so important? How exactly did she die? I think some, if not all, of these questions should be answered in either this volume, or the next. We need a reason to care about her.
One more important thing I would stress is that it needs to be Ruby actively searching for these answers. She shouldn’t have them handed to her, she should ask Yang and Qrow. Hell, if I wanted to get crazy I would just have a bottle episode with the three trapped in a bunker or something while Salem is attacking and all they do is talk about Summer.  Anything to highlight just why this woman who has been hanging over the show like a specter since the red trailer is so important.
3. Give Yang Something to Do
Tumblr media
Yang has been mostly directionless as a character since Volume 4. Her goal was to find Ruby, and that mostly carried her through V5, but now that they are reunited she’s mostly used to dress up the background or play will they won’t they with Blake (we’ll get to her) for ship bait. Put her on a path of wanting revenge on Salem for killing her mother (Summer), make her more worried about Ruby, or add her to Nora’s “defend Mantle” plotline. Something to make her an active character in the story again.
4. Put Blake Back on track
Tumblr media
Told you we’d get to her. Blake is an interesting character when you sit down and think about. In theory she should be the most compelling character with the deepest story arc, but she’s not. She was usurped by Weiss (who we will also get to in a moment) not long after Volume 5 ran its course. Her original course was to face her past, which morphed into taking back the White Fang from Adam, and then finally devolved into getting rid of Adam. Since then she has had little to no direction as well.
Atlas is a hotbed for Faunus discrimination (as far as the show has implied) so I would like to see Blake get back to that. There was a slight moment in V7 with the mine, but that was quickly discarded. It would be interesting if she was able to rally the Faunus in Mantle similar to how she did in Menagerie.
Also, fix her hair. Come on, CRWBY. My girl out here looking like a used swiffer duster.
5. More Focus on the Schnee Family
Tumblr media
A lot of people expected Volume 7 to be Weiss’ volume and its not hard to see why. The set up was there. She ran away from Atlas at the end of Volume 4 to find Winter, only to find out that her sister had been called back home. Now she was going back and not only would she reunite with her sister, she would also have to face her Father once more. Ultimately, this didn’t pan out and Weiss was mostly window dressing for what should have been the biggest part of her story.
The other Schnees weren’t much better. Winter got some things to do, but it was more in service to Penny’s character than hers. Jacques remained the same. Whitley STARTED to get a character arc and Willow did little more than drink and a be plot convenience for Weiss. With Jacques now in jail and the company and family in shambles, this is the perfect time to give us something to latch onto with these five individuals.
6. Character Conflict and Consequences
Tumblr media
RWBY has had a nasty habit of late of pushing “protagonist-centered morality”. Meaning that no matter the situation, our main characters are always right and whoever opposes them is wrong (despite the litany of examples illustrating the opposite). This has to stop going forward. It only serves to irritate the audience because it makes it seem like the characters can’t make mistakes. Nothing they do has any lasting consequences or stakes.
Team RWBY stalled Atlas’ defense plans against Salem by lying and unwitting sabotage, yet the story treated it as if they were in the right despite them offering no alternatives. Any attempts to speak against them were framed as “villainous”, turning once compelling characters into caricatures (Ironwood did nothing wrong).
When it comes to character conflict, Ruby is always right. No matter what she says or does, her group falls in line no questions asked. That’s not natural. Someone should question her, someone should disagree with her methods and give a different perspective.
Yang blistered Ozpin for lying about Salem and the Relic, but she was ok with Ruby doing the same thing to Ironwood? It made no sense and made her look like a hypocrite.
Blake abandoned her friends, yet was welcomed back with open arms with little to no conflict. Even if the audience knew her reasons, her friends didn’t. For all they know she just up and left because she felt like it. Yang talked all this mess about Blake leaving, but didn’t keep that same energy when she came back.
It’s ok for characters, for friends, to argue and disagree. It’s normal and happens all the time. Let them fight in the beginning of the volume, break up, and come back together in the end. Something. Maybe Ruby has a plan that Blake, Weiss, or sister don’t agree with and their clashing ideas split the group in half for a while. Then you can have the underlying narrative be them coming back together with new ideas to combat Salem when their individual plans don’t work.
7. Give the Villains A Win
Tumblr media
This is probably the most important thing I want to see. Salem and her forces are supposed to be the most evil group of people the planet has ever seen. A force of nature filled with killers, monsters, and madmen who want nothing more than to watch the world burn...but they haven’t posed a real threat since the Fall of Beacon.
The show TELLS us Salem is a big deal, but until the end of Volume 7 all we’ve seen her do is sit in her tower and yell about Ozpin. She had yet to directly do anything that made our main characters want to stop her other than “she bad person”. Cinder has had more impact on the plot than her, and she hasn’t been useful since Volume 3.
The villains NEED win this and the next volume. They need it so the writers can reestablish the stakes and make it so we WANT to see these bad guys defeated. Whether that be killing notable character off, taking the relic and Maiden powers, or dropping Atlas out the sky and destroying both it and Mantle completely, SOMETHING needs to happen to assert the villains dominance again in the plot.
These are just what I personally want to happen in the next volume. I’m expecting them all to happen, but I least hope one or two of them do. We’ll see how it goes.

Turning Circles
A/N: Okay, so this is the last idea I had in my head for Olympics stuff, and it’s the one that kind of did what it wanted to do. Remember how I said I don’t write ships.... well Gordon had other plans.
So Pen and Ink - and I abandoned the summer Olympics for the Winter. Because, fun fact, I don’t know anything about the other sports. But what I do know is ice skating.
So you can tell me if you enjoy this or if this is weird. I dunno.
I don’t write ships, this is weird for me. please beniceomgomgomgomg
-----
TURNING CIRCLES
It was official.
Gordon had a crush on his brother’s pairs partner.
By all rights, Penny should be representing Great Britain, not the US. But loopholes with her mother’s ancestry aside, it was obvious she and John just fit as a pairs team, and their ease with each other translated beautifully into their performances.
Their fit hadn’t been immediately obvious; it took Coach Moseley reaching out to John directly and asking him to just come give it a try. What could be the harm? Up until then, John had considered himself a singles skater. But in his past competitive performance, his programs had just felt flat, and dispassionate. The World Stage knew it.
And Penny – well she was, rightfully so, a little –uh, selective after her previous partner was willing to abandon her safety for the thrill of the win. The partnership of Fischler and Creighton-Ward had dissolved a few years ago, right before the national championship, in a major upset that reached even the most remote television screens.
There was video of the qualifiers, and Gordon fumed thinking about Penny’s fall. Pairs was about trust, about knowing each other’s cues and speaking silently, soul to soul. Penny hadn’t been prepared when Fischler changed the throw to a more difficult one that would score them a higher technical score. He hadn’t warned her, and she hit the ice hard with a cry that still sent goosebumps up his arms when Gordon thought about it.
Then again, that could just be the cold of the rink this early in the morning. He rubbed his gloved hands together to spread a bit of warmth up his frozen limbs. Gordon had bundled himself into a pair of long jeans and a thermal bomber jacket, with faux fur adorning the hood for this morning’s visit to their family’s Ice Arena and Sports Complex.
In comparison, Penny and John wore their practice outfits, and for Penny that still meant tights and a cobalt blue skating dress with a sheer skirt and rhinestones framing her chest -stop looking, Gordon. John wore a pair of black joggers and a long sleeve grey Henley. His red hair was messy from their warm-up, looking like absolute bed head in comparison to Penny’s immaculate high ponytail.
They kept warm somehow, but then again, they were the ones currently practicing the salchow. Gordon was just the one who ran for drinks.
Penny’s rotation was a bit faster than John’s. Coach Moseley echoed it as he thought it, clapping her hands together and shouting, “Again!”
The pair started with the footwork sequence right before the triple salchow, setting up the back left inside edge that started the jump. They turned, one-two-three (and it had taken Gordon a few months to get comfortable recognizing the rotations, but it was obvious now), and then landed on an outside edge on the right leg.
Better that time.
From his jacket pocket, Gordon pulled out his phone and the stylus he used to make notes and opened his digital notepad for John. He’d lost some height in his jump - an increase in his calf exercises should help correct that.
Coach Moseley skated over to the edge of the rink to greet Gordon and gestured for the pair to join her as they finished off their edge with the next few steps of the next sequence.
“Did you get that, kid?”
“Yep,” he confirmed. “All right here.” He tapped the stylus against the side of his phone. So, in all truth, he did more than bring drinks. It took a village, and John and Penny had Coach Moseley, a Choreographer, a ballet teacher, and, well, Gordon had the honor of being their nutritionist and personal weight trainer.
“I’d like you to work with Penny on her forearms, too,” Coach Moseley added. “They had a wobble in their twist lift yesterday.”
Gordon’s heart jumped. “Is she ok?”
“She didn’t fall, kiddo. John held firm. I’d just like to be a bit on the safe side.”
He understood that. A few taps with the stylus later and the note was added into Penny’s file. Then he pocketed his phone to greet his brother and his partner with a grin.
“Morning!”
“Gordon, Darling.” Penny reached for the pink thermos he offered. It was filled with warm green tea to start her day. “Thank you,” she hummed. “You’re a Godsend.”
He ducked his head as his cheeks flushed, pretending to check the other two drinks to make sure he had the right ones for each.
“Ah – here you go, John. Black with honey and cinnamon.” Pen and John were allowed natural sweeteners only. And for their coach – “Caramel macchiato with hazelnut.”
“Thanks, Gordon,” John said, humming happily into his coffee as he took a sip.
“I brought some honeycrisps too.”
“Wonderful. Okay kids, take five,” the Coach said. “We’ll drop jumps down to doubles when you get back. I want to focus on footwork this morning.”
He noticed John’s galaxy blade protectors sitting to his right on the barrier of the rink, so Gordon slid them over to his brother, stepping closer to the rink doors just in case he needed a hand. John had a habit of tripping when transitioning from gliding on ice to the awkward process of walking in heavy skates.
For Penny, taking five meant she went right back to what she was doing. Turning circles, weaving grooves of figure eights onto the smooth ice, beautiful like crystal and as hard as glass.  Much like the woman herself.
She’d taken her thermos and abandoned it on the other side of the rink.
Gordon watched her skate. And saw resilience, strength, intensity. When she first came to them, there’d been a shield around her, and slowly John and the rest of their family had started to help her bring that shell down.  Much the same as when Kayo joined their fold.
But Gordon knew Penny could still cut him down with just her words and her stare. And though she knew it was a power she held, Gordon tried his hardest to hide the extent to which he knew she could truly and utterly break him if she wanted to.
If she knew.
A crunch to his right startled him; he jumped as Virgil came up beside him and bit into one of the apples he’d washed this morning and thrown into the thermal bag.
Virgil had his pair of hockey skates draped over one of his broad shoulders, and his red flannel was rolled up a bit at the sleeves. He casually leaned forward over the edge of the rink to mirror Gordon’s position, watching Penny as she skated freely.
“We need a fourth for even teams,” Virgil offered. He placed a hand on Gordon’s shoulder, turning to look him in the eye. “What do you say? You and me against Scott and the Sprout?”
“That’s hardly fair.” Virgil was a tank as goalie, and Scott had yet to figure out Gordon’s tricks for finding openings where there didn’t seem to be any.
“I wouldn’t underestimate them, Gordo. Alan’s been getting quicker on his feet. Which you would know if weren’t spending so much time out here lately.”
Gordon shrugged Virgil off and grabbed an apple for himself as well, taking a bigger bite than he probably needed.
“Gordon.”
“What? What are you trying to say, Virgil?”
Virgil sighed, sitting back on the bleachers behind them. “Nothing. Just – when you’re ready we’ll be over on rink two.”
“Sure.”
He slid back and grabbed his hockey bag by the door. “Don’t be too long.”
And as Virgil left, John returned. They whispered a few words to each other in the doorway, and Gordon tried to ignore the way his ears burned, even in the cold air of the rink in the morning
End Note - if it feels very “The Cutting Edge” it should. Turning Circles is a song from the movie, and the concept is....eh, similar. and Moseley is the last name of a character

Let’s Talk About The Finale
Hey guys before we talk about that last episode we’re going full spoiler in this post so if you haven’t seen it yet you may want to stop here
So I wanted to make this post after seeing so many different opinions on the content of this episode and I figured I could add my two cents in and hopefully bring some praise and constructive criticism from my point of view.
First let’s talk Directing, Choreography, and Acting
First off let’s tip our hats to the VAs this episode they all did an amazing job! Elizabeth Maxwell, Miles Luna, and Taylor McNee all deserve recognition for being standouts in an episode where everyone nailed their parts.
In terms of choreography I think this met the RWBY standard. The Ironwood and maiden fights were top notch and while the RWB fight against Cinder and Neo felt a little off I think this was intentional; Team RWBY has been fighting and without rest for nearly 24 straight hours, they’re going to be slow and tired.
Directing I thought was very solid. There are some great shots I want to highlight in fact:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think all these shots are excellent and there are a few more I’ll be using later. Directing and lighting has been something I think this volume has done exceedingly well! However there is one scene I think fell short.
Tumblr media
This kinda looks like a meme doesn’t it? This moment completely took me out of the moment and I was wondering why. It’s not because of Harriet’s action’s I think she was sick of physically fighting and just wanted everyone to leave so she could die going down with the ship. No, I realized it was this shot: if this sequence had a close up of Qrow struggling against the weight of the bomb and cut back to another close up of Harriet yelling where you could see the desperation on her face (cause CRWBY did a great job with facial animation) it would work. Instead the framing, drab lighting, and stillness really hurt this scene.
Outside of this one scene however, I think this was a stellar finale in terms of production value!
WRITING
Overall I thought this was another good episode for the writers. Character dialogue was on point:
“You chose nothing, this was a gift”
“Whatever you wanted, I hope it was worth it.”
“I’ve only done what’s best for Remnant, and no one is grateful.”
And of course the whole Cinder and Salem interaction.
The events within the episode, I think, were all very good choices but there are two in particular I want to focus on:
The Sacrifice
Tumblr media
I’m gonna talk about this first because I know this is where there is the most division right now and understandably so. We all love Penny, she has always been one of the purest characters within the show. That is why her death, even so shortly after she became human, is not only the right decision but a good one.
When you think about it Penny and Pyrrha are very similar characters: Morally upright, strong, and viewed as paragons amongst their peers. Pyrrha was chosen to be Vale’s Guardian and Penny was the protector of Mantle. They were people who always did the right thing for everyone else. However, their journey’s, not as people within the show but characters within a piece of art, would always require them to meet their end.
Penny’s development was never about her learning what it was like to be a “real girl” because she already got that from being friends with Ruby. Her development was based around one of the key themes of this show: choice and control
RWBY has always focused on the question of who do we choose to be and what do we let control us. Penny rarely had a choice, and was always in danger of losing her control to someone else. At Beacon she was at Ironwood’s behest, in this season Watts had control over her in spurts. She was always in a battle to decide who she would be, and this was shown literally in the show with the fight between the virus and her soul. So when she became human she completed the biggest step in her journey of development: she no longer had any strings.
And she finally got to feel the warmth of the heart.
And that left her character development at an end. She had already learned what it meant to live, she finally got to experience the physical side of it, and finally she couldn’t be controlled again.
So when faced with the threat of someone taking away her control (Cinder) the completion of her character arc comes with her making the choice that Ruby didn’t earlier. But this time she was at peace with it, because she wasn’t dying because she had to due to an uncontrollable circumstance. No, now she chose to give her friend’s a chance, give Remnant hope in a new Winter maiden, and take from the enemy what they once took from her.
She chose.
While this completes her character arc it also develops everyone else’s which leads us into our final section
The Separation
Tumblr media
We all knew that they were going to fall, you don’t have foreboding lines like “Do not fall” and not explain why.
But now all of the events have culminated in a perfect storm for our characters next season. Here’s what I mean:
This finale, especially with Penny’s sacrifice sets up every single character in this show for major developments. Starting from the outside:
Winter now has to learn to be a leader, not just a soldier anymore. She has to unlearn the years of regimenting and oppression that she’s been a part of.
Ren and Nora get to truly figure out who they are: There will be no team leaders among them, they will have to become them.
Oscar and Ozpin have to become the heroes that the former has always wanted to be and the latter always had other to become.
Qrow continues to learn to deal with loss and how even in spite of it he can keep moving forward and that the pains of the past can push him to better instead of holding him down.
Neo will learn what family is supposed to be, and coming to understand forgiveness for the things others do.
Jaune has to come to grips with the reality of being a hero and that sometimes the best choices we can make for others are the ones that cost the most of us.
Ruby will have to face not only another close loss in her life but she’ll have to learn about sacrifice and the unfortunate necessity of it. She’s been surrounded her whole life with people making the choice to sacrifice for her: Summer, Yang, Qrow, Weiss, and now Penny. She’s going to have to face Jaune making the choice she wouldn’t (Not to say that situation called for it but understanding the differences in those situations) and understanding that sometimes people have to go. While we should always do our best to save everyone we can, sometimes running away from the grief in our lives can creating greater loss than if we face it when we have to.
Weiss has to learn to let go of control. She tried to protect and save everyone but in the end she was the last one from her team left. We’ve subtly seen through out this volume, and really the last couple of them if we’re being honest, Weiss always trying to be moderate within the team and be the glue and protector of the team as a whole. She’s always trying to be the best teammate she always promised to be but that has made her terrified to fail and in the end it’s stopped her from reaching her full potential. It’s a noble thing she does, but she’s so beholden to the expectations of other’s (now her friends instead of her family) that it secludes her. We’ve seen moments of her true strength when she focuses and trusts herself but she still hasn’t fully gotten there.
Blake is the flipside to Weiss, she needs to learn to take control. She’s still held down by the fear of being what Adam said she was that she won’t take the step forward. Whether this be with her relationship to Yang or even in situations like the one we saw in the second to last episode frozen and unsure how to proceed at the end. She tries to play it safe because of what she’s gone through. But Penny’s sacrifice and when she thought she lost Yang will push her.
Yang has already learned to necessity of sacrifice but she has to learn that not every situation requires it. Put simply she has to learn what she means to the others. Yang has always been the first to throw herself in the line of fire for others and take the risk when it’s time. But she’s never thought about how she affects others with her sacrifice. Penny’s loss may initially affirm her current view but she will have to come to face that Penny’s sacrifice happened only when absolutely necessary and when it was best for everyone else. Yang needs to know she’s worth more than what she can do for other people.
CONCLUSION
Honestly guys this was alot and if you read all this way thank you! I’m sure some people will disagree with some of my thoughts and that’s totally ok! In the end we’re all fans, and we all care alot about this show.
See you guys next season!

Ok so what the actual fuck ironwood??????????????????????????????
Just finished the episode and ummmmmmmmm I honestly did not think he’d sunk so low.
First of all wow that sure is one way to blow up a whale, so I guess now we know what long memory does. I really appreciated that they put a tw at the start for flashing lights too iirc it’s the first time they’ve done it, and I think it’s a good thing. Really cool effect on the explosion too! (rip Hazel i guess, and tbh i just. wonder how long it’ll take Salem to come back? She was blown up *pretty badly*)
Love to see that they don’t really trust emerald yet, nor do they immediately forgive her for her part in Beacon & the current situation in Atlas (also love how ren does trust her, considering he can see how sincere & scared she is)
I’m so glad they’re all back together finally!! that song was great, the reunions were so soft, but alas, they don’t know about nora yet... that’s gonna be fun.
Now! as for Watts & Cinder, well he certainly hit it where it hurts for her uh? I don’t think we’ve ever seen Cinder actually cry like that before (that I recall). but also Watts for all your talk of being clever, maybe angering a Maiden while she dangles you from way, way high up isn’t quite as clever as you think it is!!
Love to see that Neo is using the Lamp as a bargaining chip to get cinder to kill ruby, so she has no questions to ask, but she knows Jinn’s name, and even though Cinder has been ordered not to kill ruby... she’s likely to at least try & lead Neo to her to get the lamp & password.
Also yay Qrow and Robyn are out!! we love to see some jailbirds on the loose, wrecking havoc!
Now. ironwood. He’s really losing it uh??  Between legit planning to *threaten to kill to team jyr just to get to penny*, smashing that table, his reaction to winter.... and just. Fucking up mantle like that??? Those transport ships weren’t harming anyone, just trying ti help people and not only is he blowing them out of the sky, but he’s attacking mantle??? And planning to blow it up??? Like wow.
That whole transmission was chilling, he’s really a terrifying villain uh.
And interesting how he says he’d do anything to protect his kingdom.... but he never once included Mantle in that.
I was wondering how they’d all end up in the vault tbh, I guess now I know!!! Cause they can’t sit back and let Ironwood blow it up with so many innocent people.
I mean. This is the logical conclusion of literally everything about him. But damn if that wasn’t still shocking to hear him say it. The worst is? he still thinks he’s doing it for the greater good. he still thinks he’s righteous.
And they became monsters indeed

Note
ok my mistake.... but I wouldn't have put it past him to bully into getting his way anyways. Side not I love winter not taking any of ace ops commentary like "I'm not babysitting children you're supposed to be military either fucking act like it or shut the hell up" I half wanted her to throw them off the ship.
she also specifically tells them to shut it after Elm calls Penny “a pile of junk” like i see that older sister instinct
but yeah it was very “if you idiots don’t stop bickering i am turning this ship around”

OK so some thoughts i had after this finale in order of me finishing the episode and everything afterwards
- Here’s how Penny 3.0 can still win
- Here’s how Neo redemption arc will happen.
- Winter is going to blame herself for Weiss and Jaune!!!
- Bro Jaune is going to die he is not surviving this show and i’m so heartbroken. it’s the penny curse
- The way Ren and Nora are going to think that they’ve lost another teammate!!! AUGH
- I thought the dude in the building was Jacques “I thought he died??” no i just forgot arthur was there lol rest in peace dude.
- CINDER!!! YOU BITCH I HATE YOU!!! BUT YOU ARE SO GOOD AT THIS??? UGH
- Penny is not dead i refuse to see it ❤️
- Ironwoods broken look as Salem and Cinder walked away ugh i have feelings.
- QROW THINKING HIS NIECES (plus his four other adopted kids he adopted them come on) ARE DEAD??
- TAIYANG, GHIRA AND KALI ARE STILL ON THEIR WAY TO ATLAS??
-QROW IS GOING TO HAVE TO TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED??? Taiyang is going to blame qrow and i’m kinda broken for it
-Qrow holding Clovers pendant and Clovers remaining good luck helps them out i just. sobs
- VINE??? I was not expecting him to die but that scene was one of the many parts of this volume that are just so well done in like animation and sound and just ugh it was sad but it was kinda nice to look at dont @ me
- they fell like the opening 🤪
-are they in the land of the gods??
- What the FUCK was Barbara talking about??
- bro Vacuo is in for a rude awakening ❤️. Also?? They have maybe 10 huntsmen tops (as far as I know i could very well be wrong) in Vacuo defending all those people like. They’re very good fighters but that’s a lot.
-All of the broken weapons😭. Blake JUST got hers fixed god damnit
- people who were expecting a bmblb kiss this episode - 🤡.
- ...i kinda wanted a bmblb kiss
- going to be a lot of “mourning” in the next volume for people who aren’t dead.
- hold on counting the actual dead and people we can very much assume to be dead
*Vine
*Penny
*Ironwood??
*Arthur
*Jacques
*Hazel
i know i’m forgetting someone and it’s going to hurt that i am
- When Qrow jumped off the ship i panicked bc i forgot he could turn into a bird😭
- THE S**CIDE PRÉVENTION WARNING?? I had to pause i was like what the fuck is going to happen
-lol cordovin is gonna come back to atlas like what the fuck
- Atlas 🤝 Atlantis
i think that’s all i have rn i’m not going to survive this hiatus ❤️ probably going to rewatch the show in anticipation
