Clown Reader and the monster yan scientist introduced to their show to teach it about the world -
You enter the dimly lit patted cell with your hands against the wall as the metal door slams shut behind you. The stale air is pungent - acidic. Your nails chip at wearing paint as they scrape along the crevices in the walls as you stumble through the dark, tripping over your own signed merch and what you will yourself to believe are plastic dolls. The sole source of light in the room emits from a television in its far right corner. Matted hair and skeletal fingers obscure the familiar vibrant set on display - your own, chipper voice reverberating throughout the hollow prison.
"Now, I want you to close your eyes, wrap your arms around your chest, and give a biiiig squeeze. That's me, hugging you! - until next time. See you soon!"
The hands peel away from the tv with a wet sliick! as the arms attached fall around its shadowed frame. A tiny doll rests nestled in the crook of its elbow as the shadow rasps and coos in delight - lengthy, slime drenched ashen tongue patting the toy's rosy cheek. The teeth embedded into the muscle flattened againat the doll's face as it drags across - retracting into the grey flesh and leaving the plush exterior unscathed. You step back; beady, sunken eyes darting in your direction as your foot lands on the voicebox stitched into the stomach of one of your dolls.
"Cuddle me!"
The shadow drops to all four, cradling the arm with your doll to its chest. You soon realize it's number of limbs was double by three as five hands find perch on parts of your body. A growl rumbles in its throat and through your teeth, but as its jaws draw towards your neck it stops to sniff your skin. The creature looks between you and the doll in its hand, chittering softly as its eyes switch between the mini you and the real thing. You crack a smile, blinking tears from your eyes.
"H-hey, big guy! My friends out there tell me you're a fan, and from the looks of you, you might be the biggest! What's your name?"
The creatures hisses return with vengeance at the mention of others, but break into gentle purrs at the acknowledgment of being your greatest fan. It lets you go, searching around and plucking something off the breast pocket of one of those dolls you saw earlier. It licks the rectangle clean of the viscous fluid staining its frontside. It shoves the nametag in your face, tapping its claws against the plastic.
"Kevin? Your name is Kevin?"
The creature coos again, nodding its head before dipping in to sweep its tongue cross your cheek. Your smile becomes a little more genuine as you wipe your face on your sleeve. You extend your arms as it drops the doll and holds out theirs. "It's nice to meet you, Kevin."
Crackposts because yes:
Clown Reader, pointing at the scientists hiding behind thick glass: Kevin, can you tell me who this is?
Kevin, growling: Sinclair....
Clown Reader: Right! [Points at themselves] Who am I?
Kevin: Spouse.
Clown Reader: It's Y/n, actually
Kevin: Mine.
Clown Reader: Y/n
Kevin: Love.
-
Clown Reader: Ok, gang! Hope you're all ready to meet the new member to our crew.
Clown Reader, walks back stage and pulls a paper mask over Kevin's head: Alright, Kev! This is your first show. If you be good, we can do all tons of stuff together. Remember our number one rule?
Kevin: No biting. No scratching. No eating. Smile and wave
Clown Reader: Wonderful! Well, we can't keep them waiting any longer
[Clown Reader leads Kevin outside who immediately side eyes a literal puppet, pointing at its sockets before pointing down at it. The puppet silently sinks below the table.]

Myr (Monsters)
Tumblr media
(Silver Myr by Kev Walker)
(I FUCKING LOVE MYR! They're cute, they're iconic, they're interesting bits of worldbuilding... I HAD to make 'em! Mercifully, I've separated Mirrodin from New Phyrexia, and created the Plane of Steel, a fun little plot hook roughly referencing Mirrodin's creation. If you want to make these native to the Plane of Metal- new to PF2- or simply old machines of a dead culture, feel free.
Also, this will contain rules for Mana Myr, which I spiraled off the five colors of Magic, but expect more myr in the future!)
Myr are mysterious creatures native to the Plane of Steel, an artificial plane ripped from the Plane of Earth and turned into a vast network of self-sustaining machines. Myr themselves are the most common denizens of the plane, servitors to an unknown master and performing upkeep on their more complicated cohabitants.
Myr have been imported from the Plane of Steel in rare quantities, and serve as a rare treasure on the Material Plane, loyal servants infused with magical energy. Some, however, fear inviting such mysterious creatures into their homes, especially paranoid wizards and watchful politicians, as it's a known fact that myr are vulnerable to scrying- and it's a distinct possibility that their master is still watching.
Myr are unique among constructs in being easily repairable once slain. Upon reaching 0 health, a construct with the Myr subtype is not destroyed; rather, it turns inactive, and will reactivate upon being returned to positive hit points. However, a myr that reaches -20hp is destroyed as usual. Additionally, the knowledge of how to create myr has been lost or well-hidden, and they lack rules for construction. Fortunately for myr, they are capable of reproducing themselves, although attempts to study how they do so have not succeeded in creating animate constructs.
There are thousands of different kinds of myr, most being only slight modifications on a basic design; what is presented are some common archetypes and a few notable variations.
Mana Myr
Tumblr media
(Myr Moonvessel by Danny Orizio)
Among the most common servitor myr, mana myr work on the machinery that makes up the bulk of the Plane of Metal, and these servitors are attuned to one of the eight schools of magic. Of the myr of the plane, it is the mana myr who are most desired, and those who find themselves in possession of multiple, or let them reproduce, sell them for exorbitant prices.
Each school of magic produces a myr of a different color. Even though they are all made of the same substance, the magic forged into their bodies makes them appear as one of a variety of colors; the mana myr of each school of magic is named after a metal or mineral it resembles.
Tumblr media
This small humanoid construct has a strange head shaped like a heavy beak. It resonates with magical energy.

When created, it is infused with magic from one of the eight schools of magic. When used as a focus to cast a spell of that school, the spell is cast at a +1 caster level and with a +1 DC. A mana myr registers as strong magic of its school when viewed through Detect Magic or similar spells. Scrying Focus- Myr are perfect vessels for scrying on. They get a -5 penalty to saves against spells with the Scrying descriptor, and magical sensors made to scry on a myr and its surroundings get a +5 bonus against rolls to perceive it. Additionally, myr- and any object or creature they are in contact with- are not protected by spells such as Nondetection and Screen.

Born from waters tainted by the arcane, the species known as mindleeches are a mostly innocuous pest that mostly trouble the dreams of apprentice wizards. Sometimes however, the psychic energies they feed upon can link the squirming beasts together in a nightmarish mass compelled to devour and terrorize to sustain it's makeshift consciousness.
You can feel it before you see it, a whisper of sensation in the corner of your mind that tells you that something is touching you slowly rises into a wave of discomfort and writhing fear. This is how the Mass hunts, questing out with its wordless telepathy for anything capable of response, something it can track down and feed upon until it is comatose and exsanguinated. Life for the mindleech mass is short and unplesant, like a fire it exists in a state of constant consumption, growing each time it is fed but needing to feed more and more as it grows. The creature is either then destroyed or the limit is hit and it devours its own consciousness, collapsing back into a pile of egoless animals.
In their natural state, mindleeches and their ability to sense and drain magic can be quite helpful, as they're often used to treat arcane maladies much the same way their mundane cousins can treat poor circulation. A jar of the lil buggers can likewise be used as a quick fix for detecting magical auras.
Adventure Hooks:
When sent to the swap to gather some leeches as a favour for the local healer, the party have no way of knowing that a dark artifact has been dropped into the local waters, imbuing the creepy crawlies with a malign sapience. After they defeat the beast, the artifact will come spilling out on a tide of wiggling wormbodies, leaving them to decide what to do with it.
A hazing prank between students at the local magic college went too far and one of the apprentices ended up drowned in the sewers during a storm. Before they died their body ended up swept into a nest of thought leeches, who absorbed the student's fear and resentment and began to swarm. Now the Mass hunts students and faculty through the pipes and drains of the school, leaving the sort of bloodless bodies behind that may have the party thinking they're hunting a vampire.
Though it was once a place of beauty and arcane might, the elven enclave of Xor'Izil is today nothing more than a boggy ruin. None alive today remember its downfall, save for the colony of mindleeches that now dwell in its flooded foundations. Bred for a now forgotten war, the leeches burst free from their containment and in a single day and night devoured the inhabitants of the elven city, granting it a stockpile of psychic energy that has sustained the Mass through centuries. Now in possession of the semi-digested consciousnesses of a coterie of elven warmages, the Mindleech Mass seeks to evolve itself into a sustainable, and even more dangerous form: A Worm-that-walks. In order to do so it'll need a suitable vessel to devour and then possess, say a powerful mage allied to the party.
Mindleech Mass belongs to Magic the gathering,

I think the moment when you start loving your character is evident. It's a vivid line, drawn between a no-one and a warm, human-like presence.
Right now I'm working on two different fanfics, although I started working on one of them a bit earlier than the other. And so in that first story, Kevin Day is a no-one. He is dull, a ghost, something to move the plot along a bit. He is— the way people picture him when they want to mock him. A one-dimensional creature. He scolds Neil for not playing good enough, he talks about exy-exy-exy-exy. There's nothing more to him than this exy-exy-exy-exy.
The second fanfiction, on the other hand, is where I'm learning to love him. Today I felt it, clear as day, that I do love him. And he felt warm and clever. His interactions with Andrew didn't circle around being either afraid or narrow-minded. He felt alive.
I hope I haven't let you down yet, Kev. I'm sorry you haven't had a chance to talk about history or show the world that fierce determination. I will love you the way you deserve and will do everything to keep this warmth whenever I write you.

Weekly Tag Wednesday
i was tagged! (thank you @mybrainismelted, @jrooc, and @stocious!) and i actually had the time to finally do one of these! yay wednesday!
Name: sam. Location: hibernating in toronto with creature (posco) and the beast (nyx). And now for the randomness! Tell me your most and least favourites of: Candy? most: skittles. least: i kinda sorta don't actually like chocolate? *dodges flying fruit* Seasons? most: summer. least: spring. i second what jess said — when you live in canada, spring is only pretty in the movies. Hot beverage? most: coffeeeeeeee. least: i can't image liking mulled wine… Cold beverage? most: on an average day, water. if i'm hungover, rootbeer. if it's hot as balls outside, a long island iced tea in the backyard. least: margaritas (or anything with tequila). Colours? most: black (its a colour, i don't care). least: yellow. Vegetables? most: po-tay-toes! boil em', mash em', stick'em in a stew… least: mushrooms (unless they're super duper magical). Traditional foods from your country? most: poutine is clearly the only correct answer. least: buttertarts? i dunno, canada isn't really know for its traditional anything lol. Insects? most: lady bugs are pretty cute. least: spiders (they count, i don't care). also, did you know that the worst part of being single isn't actually the lack of companionship or sex or any such thing? no, it's knowing that no matter how much you cry and scream about it, at the end of the day, its gonna have to be you that kills the spider in the corner of the ceiling above your bed. Cake flavours? most: so in addition to chocolate i also don't really like desserts? *dodges flying cookware* plain cheese cake with strawberries is pretty good though i guess. least: anything really rich/chocolately. i'm weird. whatever. Non-Gallagher or Milkovich Shameless characters? most: kev or sheila, for the laughs. least: trevor. sorry not sorry. even if i could divorce my dislike of him from my feelings about mickey (i can't), i would still find him insufferable and annoying as all hell.
Tagging: with all apologies if you've already been tagged and with absolutely no pressure, @palepinkgoat @auds-and-evens @captainjowl @crimson-bebop @sickness-health-all-that-shit @toddmccray @deanie1987 @depressedstressedlemonzest

Resonant Crystal - CR4 Hazard
An environmental hazard to put in a boss room in a crystal cave.
Tumblr media
Artwork by Kev Walsh at Corehammer.
Traps and environmental hazards are often best-used in combat encounters.  Here’s one that only functions in a combat encounter.  Unless a powerful enemy (at least 1 CR higher than the average party level) is attuned to this crystal, the hazard is CR 0 and worth no experience.
Although it gives no XP in an encounter with multiple smaller enemies, my goal was for this to still be an interesting hazard to include in such encounters.  It can be used tactically by both the PCs and the enemies, so it doesn’t particularly make the fight easier or harder, but it makes it different.  If you plan on using some of these crystals in a boss fight, it’s a good idea to sprinkle them around the rest of the dungeon too, so players get to play with them before they reach the boss.
You can make a resonant crystal any size you want, but somewhere between Small and Large is the most obvious range.  If the enemy attuned to it is bigger than Large, then a bigger crystal might make sense.
Resonant Crystal - CR 4 or CR 0
XP 1,200 or XP 0
Resonant crystals grow out of the stone in certain underground caverns.  A creature with at least 3 Intelligence can attune to a resonant crystal by spending 1 minute touching it.  Only one creature can attune to a single crystal at a time - if another creature attunes to it, the previous creature’s attunement ends.
A resonant crystal creates dim light in a 5-foot radius, but the light appears much brighter to the attuned creature, acting as normal light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet which only that creature can see.  As long as the attuned creature is within the 60-foot emanation of dim light, it gains a +2 sacred bonus to attack rolls, spell DCs, AC, and saving throws, and gains 2 temporary hit points at the start of each of its turns; these temporary hit points do not stack.
A resonant crystal has 2 hardness and 3 hit points per inch of thickness.  If a resonant crystal takes any amount of slashing, bludgeoning or piercing damage (even if the damage is reduced to 0 by its hardness), it creates an explosion of sound and light.  All creatures within a 60-foot radius must succeed on a DC 16 Fortitude save or take 1d8 sonic damage and be dazed for 1 round.  After this explosion of light and sound, the resonant crystal goes dark for 1d6+1 rounds, providing no light or benefits to the attuned creature or anyone else, and any further damage to it does not create another explosion of light and sound until it begins to glow again.
If a powerful enemy (at least 1 CR higher than the average party level) is attuned to a resonant crystal, the hazard is CR 4 and worth 1200 experience.  Otherwise, the hazard is CR 0 and worth no experience.

Cystbearer (Monster)
Tumblr media
(art by Kev Walker)
(So I ended up statting up a LOT of Phyrexian monsters back before their arc reached its climax. I'll be posting them under #phyrexia project, with the hope that once I'm done you'll have a robust monster list for a Phyrexian invasion campaign.
My phyrexia is mostly a blend of old Phyrexia and Phyrexia as depicted in Scars of Mirrodin block, as that's how I was first introduced to them. We'll be seeing a lot more of them as this blog continues. I haven't statted up the Praetors yet, but I'm imagining them as CR21-25 range monsters who grant divine spells and have Mythic ranks.
Cystbearers are, to me, an iconic creature of Scars of Mirrodin, being decently costed common infect creatures with no other ability. They also look nasty as hell, in a good way.)
CR4 NE Large Aberration
Cystbearers are early vanguards of Phyrexian invasion, virulent and resilient beings grown in massive Phyrexian breeding pools. They are remarkably fast to grow, with a new cystbear going from single celled germ to fully developed Phyrexian beast in the course of about a week in the noxious pools. They are then released into the world, typically with orders to kill and infect indiscriminately- orders they perform with gusto.
Cystbearers have barely enough intelligence for sadism and an understanding of the harm they're causing. For all intents and purposes, a cystbearer acts more like an unusually aggressive animal, rather than an intelligent being who can formulate plans in combat or be negotiated with.
A large-mouthed beast the size of a bear shambles forward, its back covered in tubular cysts leaking green fluid.

Kev Walker! That's who your art style reminds me of, but I couldn't place it before. You both depict monsters with smaller eyes and deliberately inhuman proportions, leaning away from the broader trend to humanize creature designs. You let your creatures be *creatures*, instead of trying to make them fit our mold. It really strikes a great balance between naturalistic and otherworldly.
ghcjkgvjvjh seriously??? I mean I wouldn't compare my work to his but yes I have been kind of raised on his style... like long before I even knew anything about MtG this was the book that I read to learn how to draw creatures
