Inspired by a post i just saw, here is the only correct take on a Batfam Atla au(Tw for things present in Atla canon such as racial and misogynistic violence)
@mayameanderings @desi-pluto
Duke is the Avatar-No ifs or buts,he's literally THE SIGNAL OF HOPE FOR GOTHAM
Jason is a Fire Nation commoner who got adopted by the Fire Lord after his parents' death
The Fire Lord is Black Mask and Talia is Ursa but it's not shipping because EW,she's got no positive relation to him and was instead Jason's firebending teacher he thought BM succeeded in killing in his rage after finding out she was trying to adopt him but she actually escaped and got amnesia and a matching burn scar to Jason's but only the opposite side because she's his other half his father burned the bridge to
You know the drill-Jason's sent to capture Avatar Duke,Duke redeems him with his little shit sunshine boy swag without even trying, they are hashtag brothers in every universe.Lil bit more on Duke is that he's actually a Fire Nation Avatar but of the black etchnic subgroup in the comics and his parents were driven mad by spirits sent as 'punishment' for their 'impurity' by General Joker and this is why he is a nomad at the beginning, having fled the Fire Nation because he was sick and tired of still being the problem child at school but getting no comfort this time
(Note:Jason is part of this subgroup and for self-indulgence,every other element has their own black etchnic variant too)
Stephanie is an Airbender-Air Nomads are objectively the best part of Atla so she deserves it.She's tibetan AN and black AN mixed and is pretty much an Aang and Ty Lee fusion-Both in design and personality. Her plot is getting tangled up with Duke and Cass as the og trio when they end up at her temples and she ends the series as the Earth King's consort(that king being Cass)and an ambassador but beforehand spends her time doing anti-imperialist war crimes
Cass is the daughter of the Cains, who lied to everyone about her being mute so they could train her to be the perfect submissive obidient daughter only for it to be blasted back in their face as she learned Earthbanding at the tutelage of badgermoles since they couldn't speak either and she became an underground pro-bender as 'The Silent Bandit' to make money for herself to run away from home and her first instinct when she made enough was to go to the Air Nomads for safety. This more or less worked in the end as she ended up getting crowned Earth King over the actual bloodheirs
Tim is a nonbender who knows chiblocking, the last skill Janet taught him before she died and he used it to avoid getting bullied but isolated himself from other kids as a result because they thought he was a freak. He accidentally joined the main gang when they visited his hometown in the Fire Nation and helped them blend in and they went on an adventure where they gave him honorary member status and he became an official one when they returned
Dick is a trans waterbender and she's their mentor who joined in on their travels because she wasn't about to let a bunch of kids run around fighting fascists without an adult around so they'd have backup and someone to take care of them. She herself was the leader of the Teen Titans,a resistance team, but retired after having her bending taken away and it's returned to her by Duke a bit into her time with them. She leaves Roy to take care of the tribe and when they reunite,he pulls her into a passionate kiss as a confession in front of the whole Duke's Court(their team name)and they have your typical grossed out kids reaction and after this he becomes the Team Dad to her Team Mom
Damian is also trans and named Yasmine and here comes the big previous Avatar plot twist:It was actually Talia, who is of arab and chinese Earth Kingdom descent and not Fire Nation!!Part of the BM tragedy is that she died during childbirth due to Fire Nation induced sickness and this manifested in a Spirit World fiasco that ended with her being ressurected but no longer the Avatar because her soul'd been passed onto Duke by then and she was given a new one and her being lied to about Yasmine being stillborn so she'd stay in the FN.Yasmine's a Talia Warrior and does her best to uphold her mother's legacy due to all the thing's she'd been told about her
She joins Duke's Court, they find Talia again,Duke learns how to cure his parents with Avatar powers and they live happily ever after despite the struggles,Jason gets Lightningbending and white fire as symbolism for healing his inner child and the ages are Duke and Damian-12,Stephanie and Tim-13,Cass-14,Jason-17,Dick and Roy-25 and Talia-40s

Just stumbled across this amazing article and analysis again. I reread it and remembered just how well this covers the history of Roy’s Navajo upbringing and the way that they have handled it throughout the years. Genuinely a good read.

Lian Harper has a better understanding of Snowbirds than much of the modern fanbase
I've been reading the Green Arrow 80th anniversary special and one part in particular stood out to me. One of the stories in the comic is Roy telling Lian (and Ollie) a story over the phone, specifically *Roy's* story, in the style of a Navajo story, and Ollie and Roy are called Green-Man and Autumn-Son.
During this, obviously, one of the major plotpoints is Roy's addiction and a retelling of Snowbirds Don't Fly from Roy's perspective, in which Roy accounts how Ollie was angry at him. Lian actually *corrects* Roy, saying that Ollie was scared
Tumblr media
And honestly? I think this is *how* this was meant to be interpreted when it was written. Snowbirds was never meant to show Ollie as in the right, but it was also never meant to make him the villain. Ollie is, in this story, essentially a caricature of a 70s parent's reaction to finding out their child is using drugs. Keep in mind this was written *during* the war on drugs, a time where misinformation was rampant and every parent's worst fear was finding out their child was an addict. I personally firmly believe that Ollie views Roy as his son, and vis versa, but even if you don't Ollie finding out that the kid/young adult he'd been mentoring is addicted to drugs? Terrifying. Especially since Ollie's aim had always been to teach Roy strength, and addiction was seen as the worst possible weakness, meaning Ollie had not only failed as a father but as a mentor in his eyes. Snowbirds is repeatedly used by Oliver Queen haters to demonize him, to show him as a bad father, but Snowbirds is and always has been a product of its time, not in terms of writing but culturally. Yes, Oliver *would* react like that in 1971. And so would most DC heroes. But you know what? He grew. He developed, he changed his mindset and he *listened* to Roy, and snowbirds ends with him being *proud* of Roy.
So yeah. While there were definitely aspects of his reaction that were undoubtedly angry, that was all vastly overshadowed by *fear*. Lian Harper was, as always, right.
Edit: I did a big post on Snowbirds here

Random DC Headcanons: Roy and Lian Harper (Relationships) Part 2
Lian Harper's non-Arrow relationships as of Dawn of DC
Dick Grayson- Whenever she asks her dad about Dick, she notices the sad tone in his voice. Lian wonders what Dick did or didn't do.
Victor Stone- Lian has fond memories of him, but is sad that she doesn't get to hang out with him as much.
Gar Logan- She is sad that Gar has died, but she knows that he'll be back.
Garth- She knows that he looks different from the last time she saw him, but she chalks it up as the same reason why her dad is missing his Navajo tattoo. She misses Ceridian and wonders why hasn't he come back yet.
Wally West- She knows that it wasn't his fault that her dad died. She often talks to him and Jai and Irey about being lost in time and how things have changed. Lian and the twins play video games together whenever they come over to each others' house. She likes Wade and is planning on teaching him Black Canary's finger trick when he's a little older.
Donna Troy- She knows Donna and her dad have tried and failed to be a couple, but she admits that she still "ships" them. She and Donna reconnect over Lian's drawings.
Koriand'r- Lian loves to draw her, even though she thinks she can't really do her justice. Kory loves the drawings anyway.
Rachel Roth- Lian isn't as close to her as she is with Donna and Kory, but she likes it when she comes along and hangs out with them.
Jason Todd- Lian doesn't like Jason very much. It is mostly because she remembers him hurting Mia Dearden. She asked her dad about why he was hanging out with Jason and, judging by his tone, it is clear that he doesn't like talking about Jason.
Grant Emerson- Lian wants to see him again and see if he's okay.
Bonus relationship headcanons-
Aside from her reminding him about Jason, Roy is okay with Selina Kyle. Roy thinks Lian could have done a whole lot worse with possible mentors. FYI- his idea of the worst mentor for Lian- Deathstroke.
Roy wants to get to know Billy and Skidmark. To him, they are to Lian what the Titans were to him.

Roy harper headcannons pls
If you have time of course
Of course!!!
For those that don’t know, in New Earth, Roy was adopted by the shaman of the Tachini Navajo tribe, Brave Bow, and is an active member of that community. While he’s definitely slipped on some of the traditions he was raised with, there’s some that he continues to do, like Lian’s first Laugh cermony or the House blessing ritual. He and Jade also use the Navajo language to communicate about their daughter as needed.
He does really and truly love Jade. Like they’ll joke about their elopement in Vegas with an Elvis impersonator, but he really does love her.
This man has 0 fucks to give at all times, except when it comes to a child’s safety. Doesn’t have to be his child, any child.
He recognizes that Sin is technically his younger adopted sister….but that hurts his head too much
Every year on his sobriety date, he gets a cupcake and candles. Lian helps him blow them out.
He has a, uh, private investigation buisness that helps keep food on the table (definitely hasn’t beaten up any sleezy clients)
Plays the guitar when he’s stressed
He doesn’t view smoking pot as a relapse (and has strict rules for both himself and his daughter when it comes to it)
This man is where Lian’s temper comes from.
When he, Wally, and Dick are in a room together, they are no longer grown men/fathers/husbands. They are boys and will find every way they can to rag on each other.
On off thing with Jason, which works for them.
Goes to Queen Manor once a month with Lian for family dinner.

DC character headcanons, cuz why not.
Tumblr media
I’m really bored in class, and I said forever ago I might do this. So, here’s DC characters and my hcs for them (ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc).
Bruce Wayne: Half-Jewish (mothers’ side, see Kane family). Pansexual. He/Him.
Dick Grayson: Romani. Bisexual. He/Him, but is fine with They/Them.
Jason Todd: Hispanic from his mother’s side (Sheila and Catherine). Unlabeled, but dates any gender. He/They.
Tim Drake: Wasian, Chinese from his mother’s side. Bisexual, leans towards men. He/They.
Duke Thomas: Half African American, Half whatever his dad (Gnomon) is. Demi bisexual. He/Him.
Damian Wayne: Jewish and Caucasian from Bruce’s side, Mixed Arabic and Chinese from Talia. Unlabeled, just likes whoever. He/Him.
Clark Kent: Kryptonian, though raised American. Bisexual. He/They/Ze. Though is open to most masculine or genderless pronouns, as krypton has a different expression of gender (this is a headcanon of mine)
Conner Kent/Kon-El: Kryptonian from Clark, has some German and American from Luthor. Homosexual. Genderfluid. He/Him or any masculine or genderless pronouns.

Bart Allen: Caucasian, American. Omnisexual, but leaning towards men. He/Him, but is fine with They/Them or Xe/Xem.
Hal Jordan: Half-Jewish (mothers’ side) though raised catholic (fathers’ side). Unlabeled, just likes whoever. He/They/Xe, is fine with any masculine or genderless pronouns, as many alien languages don’t have multiple pronouns.
Guy Gardner: Caucasian American for the most part, but is a descendant of the space-traveling Vuldarians, so he’s part Alien. Queer. He/Him, but is fine with They/Them or many other pronouns used by alien species.
Oliver Queen: Caucasian, American. Pansexual. He/Him but is fine with They/Them.
Roy Harper: Caucasian, but adopted by and raised Navajo. Unlabeled, just likes whoever he likes. He/Him.
Michael Jon Carter (Booster Gold): Half-Jewish, through his Levin ancestors. (Confirmed by Jeff Katz). Omnisexual. Genderqueer. He/She/They, any pronouns, though used He/Him for the most part since its easier for others.
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle): Might be Jewish (Again from Jeff Katz). Demi Bisexual. He/Him, but is fine with They/Them.

Who is Roy Harper? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Roy Harper is a DC Comics legacy character introduced in the Golden Age as the protégé/son of Green Arrow (Oliver Queen). Roy was the original Speedy and had an extremely close relationship with his adoptive father Oliver Queen throughout the Golden and Silver Ages. In 1971, DC released the "Snowbirds Don't Fly" storyline in response to Nixon's announced War on Drugs. This storyline was a PSA designed to show what not to do when a loved one (particularly a young adult child) is struggling with addiction. This story would change the trajectory of Roy's story and cemented his role as a recovered addict, a part of his character that has unfortunately come to be his defining quality rather than being part of his larger story. Roy is a single father to Lian Harper (his daughter with the assassin Jade Nguyen/Cheshire), and has a sibling bond with family members Connor Hawke, Mia Dearden, and Emiko Queen. Roy's origins have always been connected to America's Indigenous Peoples and later comics have cemented their role in his life with his having been adopted by the Diné/Navajo as a young child before being adopted by Ollie in his teenaged years. Roy has had multiple mantles over the years, from Speedy, to Arsenal, to joining the Justice League of America as Red Arrow - but in every iteration is he the very image of a hero.
Reading list (with totally legal links) under the cut!
This reading list begins in the Golden Age and will take you through Pre-52 comics, and then end with the Green Arrow 80th Anniversary Super Spectacular! New 52 is left out because that is not Roy Harper, and Rebirth and more current comics are being left out for a lot of reasons that I won't list here.
If multiple issues are listed for one run at a time, only the first issue will be linked, the assumption is that you will be able to navigate to the following issues from there.
Golden Age:
More Fun Comics #78, 81-82, 89, 91-92
World's Finest Comics #7, 57, 70
Adventure Comics #121, 133, 137, 151, 155, 164, 166, 179, 184, 189, 196
Silver Age and Beyond:
Adventure Comics #233
World's Finest Comics #88
Adventure Comics #246, 256, 260-263
Teen Titans Vol 1 #4, 11, 19-43
The next story on this list is "Snowbirds Don't Fly" - it is HEAVILY RECOMMENDED to read the above stories BEFORE reading Snowbirds as they should be considered required context for the storyline as they are the context the story is building from. Don't be a Judd Winick- do your reading kids.
Green Lantern Vol 2 #85-86
Action Comics #436
Teen Titans Vol 1 #44-52
Green Lantern Vol 2 #100
Teen Titans Vol 1 #53
World's Finest Vol 1 #251
Best of DC #18
New Teen Titans Vol 1 #27, 29-32
Tales of the Teen Titans #50
New Teen Titans Vol 2 #19-21
Action Comics Vol 1 #613-618, 627-634, 636-640
Secret Origins Vol 2 #38
New Titans Vol 1 #60-69, 97
Green Arrow Vol 2 #75
New Titans Vol 1 #99-114
Showcase '94 #7
New Titans Vol 1 #0, 115-130, Annual #11
Green Arrow Vol 2 #97-101 * these issues should be read with the understanding that the writer, Chuck Dixon, is a vocal hater of Oliver Queen and did his best to ruin the character's image before and during the character's death as soon as he took over the run
Showcase '95 #8
Batman + Arsenal #1
JLA/Titans Vol 1 #1-3
Arsenal #1-4
The Titans Vol 1 #1-50 Annual #1
Green Arrow Vol 3 #1-15*, 16-21 - *(most Roy centered issues are 1, 5-6, and 8-9)
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day #1-3
Teen Titans/Outsiders Secret Files/Origins Vol 1 (2003)
Outsiders Vol 3 #1-33
Green Arrow Vol 3 #32, 44-50

Preliminary Poll
Roy Harper
Tumblr media
Submission reason:
*shot of me physically throttling Red Hood and the Outlaws (2011)* OH BOY– So in 2011 DC rebooted everything in the New 52. This was widely regarded as bad move for the entire universe but today I’m screaming about ROY HARPER They took everything interesting about Roy and just threw it out the window. Roy being a single father? Nope, Lian doesn’t exist anymore. His complex relationship with Ollie? Gone. His long and storied history with the Titans? The Titans never happened. Roy overcoming his drug addiction? Well let’s just make him alcoholic since addictions are easily interchangeable, right? Also instead of his established friends and family helping him through it it’s Jason Todd and fucking KILLER CROC Then his personality. Scott Lobdell wanted Jason Todd (his self insert power fantasy) to look good so much he made Roy an idiot to prop Jason up. Compare this with his relationship to Dick pre-52. Roy and Dick are friends but they fight and butt heads as the two leader types both in the Titans and the Outsiders. Also he dated Kory, of all people. Badly written and even worse designed new 52 Kory. I might type up a rant about her treatment at some point if I feel like it. Bonus info: Roy is one of THREE members of the Arrowfam who got shoved into a Bat book and written OOC. First him in RHATO, then Connor Hawke in Robin and Lian in Catwoman. Istg they better bring back Mia in the new GA and not batgirls or smth
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS DID HIM SO FUCKING DIRTY I WANNA CRY They changed his character to become the dumb sidekick! They changed his past drug addiction to alcoholism (and made him side kick of a character who ran a drug cartel?), they erased his Navajo heritage and tattoos to change them for some random ass edgy tattoos, the Roy Harper in RHatO is unrecognisable which is a SHAME because the actual Roy Harper could've had a really interesting dynamic with the other characters but nooooo, Lobdell had to ruin him Also, don't get me started on how they massacred him in Arrowverse
They changed his whole backstory - removing parts of his upbringing such as his being raised on a first nations reservation, changing his addiction from heroin to aloholism, removing many of his friendships and dynamics in order to make him a prop for another character (Jason Todd), destroying his relatonship with his adopted father (Oliver Queen).
Propaganda:
He is my specialest boy I have never forgiven DC writers for what they did to him. Give him back
not really, I just wanna say: fuck Lobdell <3
