The new batch of @2000adcomic audiobook adaptations came out this past week. I think it was just last week that I proclaimed Dredd vs Death to be an all-time favorite comic, so of course I had to listen to this audiobook version. It’s a multi-cast recording with music and sound effects, but otherwise a pretty direct adaptation of the comic. Peter Serafinowicz and Amber Rose Revah are fantastic as Death and Anderson. I’m still getting used to Adam Basil as Dredd, more so because he’s like the fifth actor I’ve heard as Dredd, and it’s a slightly different interpretation than I’d gotten used to in previous adaptations. My second read for 2022 - Sarasvati’s Gift by @kavitakane features a unique goddess - one who is intelligent, bold and unafraid to speak her mind or walk the road less traveled. Sarasvati is a part of the holy trinity - Sarasvati, Lakshmi and Paravati - but unlike the other two goddesses who are always associated with their consorts, Sarasvati holds an identity of her own. . With her partner, Brahma, this fearless and wise goddess forms the most unusual couple - one that doesn’t bow to societal norms and peer pressure. They fight and argue, discourse and understand but above all they respect each other’s independence. . While I loved reading about this unique Devi and her extraordinary story woven by a master of this genre, this wasn’t my favorite Kavita Kané read for two reasons. The first being that much of this story is told through dialogue between characters so there is little action in the beautifully descriptive world she sets up and more of lengthy conversations that often felt like monologue after monologue. The second reason being that the dialogue between the characters tends to be repetitive and often convolutes an already intellectual conversation further than necessary. .
