Queer reads: Avon Gale & Piper Vaughn

Day 30! And this one is on time! Okay, to round out my sport romance section, I give you Avon Gale & Piper Vaughn. (side note: I only had room for 3 posts for sport romances, and let me tell you, there are hundreds. Thousands, probably. Some better than others, but I’ve really only scraped the surface of the gay sport romance genre)

So, this is the Hat Trick series, which is a sport thing (yes, I figured out what a hat trick is, it’s a hockey thing).

Avon Gale has lots of books, some co-written, some not, as does Piper Vaughn, but having read some of each, I think I like their cowriting together the best. (Avon Gale has a couple books cowritten with Roan Parrish, who I also like, but surprisingly I was not moved by the one I read. It lacked something for me.)

Anyway, Off The Ice is book 1, and I think my favorite of the three, because it features a sunshine/asshole dynamic, and I love that shit. These books are more about the characters than they are about the sports, and I enjoyed the relationships between the characters, and in particular, I enjoyed the dialogue in these books. A+ banter.

I said I liked these two writing together better than their other stuff, but I also really enjoyed her Scoring Chances series, which is five books about a minor-er league than the NHL and the hockey players there.

alright, there really isn't a way to skirt around this one... tw: sick kids, cancer, death

I think the loss that most effected piper was the first big one in her life, the one that made her understand the severity of cancer. when she was first diagnosed she was just a child, not even ten yet. her parents explained as best they could but for the most part it didn't register. she stayed at the hospital while receiving treatment and bonded with the other children in the ward, especially a boy named david. they were together at every opportunity, always laughing and goofing off with each other - like kids are supposed to do... until things took a turn for the worse. david got sicker and piper saw him less and less. then she stopped seeing him altogether. her parents gently broke the news to her and it was like everything shifted. her best friend was gone, taken by the very same illness she was fighting. to say she was devastated would be an understatement. david sat in her mind often, appearing in the pictures she drew and the dreams she had when she closed her eyes. his memory never faded, not when she went into remission and returned to 'normal' life, not even when she grew into adulthood. piper cites david as part of the reason why she beat cancer for the second time in her teen years, claiming "he was looking out for me, I could feel him." david made her aware of the fragility of human life and how special it is to form connections with people. she has a 'd' tattooed on her wrist in his honor.

CHARMED REBOOT SERIES FINALE.

Okay, first thing first, Charmed Reboot in so many ways does not resemble the original version. For me, it's massively meh, and there were only few moments I actually enjoyed it. To me. The OG Charmed will always take the cake, any time.

Now, I had just finished the last episode of the last season of Charmed Reboot. I have to say... WELL DONE! The producers did a great job paying a homage to OG Charmed by ending its series finale with Vera sisters going inside Halliwell Manor, and the front door closes magically like OG Charmed always do. It gave me massive goosebumps.

It was certainly an amazing touch with bittersweet undertone.

Vaughn Von Viper

Vaughn is the firstborn child of Piper and is known as the Timekeeper. He struggles to see due to a vision impediment he has that has only worsened due to him consistantly handling fire and items that give over a bright glow.

He refuses to wear glasses though, due to the pressure that is on him to be the example of a perfect being.

He is the father to Kenji and his spouse is currently unknown[she passed after Kenji's birth and Vaughn doesn't want to remember anything that has to do with her because of how upset it makes him]

Piper appreciated that Zach was not only okay with her talking about work but that he also engaged the conversation the way he did. Clearly he was listening and though it was a simple courtesy, she was grateful nonetheless. "Hey, you never know! You might actually really love it there," she replied, before breaking into soft laughter. "Okay, okay, you'd actually probably despise it. All the energy radiating off the kids and sucking your battery dry, the unwanted touch as they latch onto you because of how cool your hair is... Doesn't scream 'Zach-friendly' to me. Though if you ever did want to tag along you're more than welcome. I'd love to have you." Piper laughed again at being referred to as a 'real-life princess.' It was one of those things that always made her smile. "Well now you can cross it off the bucket list. Are there any other ideas on there that I could help you with?"
