Fantasy short story anthology time!
My new book, The Gorgon Incident and Other Stories: A Mage Errant Anthology, is out now on Amazon and Audible!
I absolutely love writing short stories. They push me as an author in ways that novels don't, and each one presents me with a unique, fascinating challenge. And, with this anthology, they allow me to explore parts of Anastis, the world of Mage Errant, in ways I couldn't in the main series. I get to travel to out-of-the-way corners, visit ordinary people to see how they get by in a world of giant monsters and ruthless archmages battling for control of petty territories, to explore secret conspiracies and legendary historical figures, and to flesh out Anastis' ecology, culture, and history.
If you haven't read Mage Errant yet, the first three ebooks are free for the next few days, and books four through six are on sale for $0.99 in the US and UK! Mage Errant is a completed, seven book magic school progression fantasy series, following the adventures of Hugh of Emblin as he goes from being a shy, neurodiversefailure of a student mage who struggles with anxiety and depression to being a shy, neurodiverse terrifying archmage who struggles with anxiety, depression, giant monsters, and magical superweapons. It features found family, giant monsters, a science-inspired hard magic system where you're as liable to run into hair or bismuth mages as fire mages, giant monsters, lots of queer characters, giant monsters (some of whom are also queer characters), kaijucratic systems of government, and sapient living cities. (Did I mention the giant monsters?)
The stories in the Gorgon Incident are written to be legible even to people who haven't read Mage Errant yet- though I think most people will get more out of them after reading the main series. The twenty-four stories, all originally published on my Patreon, span five centuries of history, from the last years of the Ithonian Empire up to the events of the series itself, even visiting another of Anastis' continents for the first time.
I also leaned hard into the science-inspired aspects of the setting with many of the stories, building what I like to call science puzzle stories, where the plot of the story revolves around the real-life behavior of various materials and natural processes, through a magical lens. (I had a lot of fun doing it, and it even let me include a whole additional appendix filled with notes on the science of the short stories- I love appendices.)

(Art by Aaron McConnell and Lee Moyer.)
A fugitive child finds shelter with a monster of legend. A mind-blind scholar outwits the mages who disdain him. A gold mage must secure a bank vault from a monster capable of obliterating entire cities. An aging basketweaver wakes up one morning to find a brand new river in front of her house. A palace-sized octopus seeks to defend his city from a living fortress of bone— if he can get his arms to cooperate.
In these twenty-four short stories set in the world of Mage Errant, John Bierce explores the murky depths of history, forgotten corners of Ithos and beyond, and the strangest reaches of magic itself.

Hello everyone! I'm announcing my first novel in a new series, Mana Mirror, by me (Tobias Begley). It's a Progression Fantasy novel with strong influences in Magical Academia, some Xianxia influence, and a huge mage focus! It can be found here, or at the last link below!
This is the novel's description: When Malachi Baker stumbles into an offer of apprenticeship from the esteemed and powerful Occultist Orykson, he's left in shock and jumps at the chance to learn... Even if it means taking out a few loans.
Unfortunately, his new teacher sees him more as a tool than a student, and has set Malachi near-impossible goals before he becomes worthy of Orykson's full attention, and Malachi's innate power is only somewhat above average.
Worse, it turns out that Orykson has enemies more powerful than Malachi had ever imagined – and now their attention has landed solidly on him.
Torn between the mage who can offer him everything, and a strange old woman who offers him the chance to guide his own path, Malachi is left scrambling to find his purpose as a new mage.
What to expect: - Slowburn to Power - Slice of Life - Queer Content

LMGTS: Xianxia leads to another
Tumblr media
Quest master: Here's a quest set in a cultivation/xianxia universe, blatantly inspired by Will Wright's Cradle Series. Me: Oh, that's nice. QM: Everyone talks in funny ways, because this quest is set in another world entirely, one based heavily on Chinese media. Me: Mmm-hm.
QM: Also, here's one of my main characters talking about "punching down" in the negative.
Me:
Tumblr media
This particular forum happens to be very, very progressive. And the character in question came from an under-privileged background, and is quoting his former master, a storyteller.
And that master said a certain story wasn't good because it's just about a trickster hurting people who can't hurt him back, even though the story is popular.
Sure, the character is mocking and quoting his ex-master, but that phrasing still shouldn't be there.

Demon OC from my litRPG Hell of a System because who said the demons can't be as good looking as the other people? Not all demons are bad demons. NOT ALL DEMONS ARE TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE SYSTEM. Just some of them.
Check it out if you're interested:
The best way to come back from the dead is stronger than before. Geram Vulros vows to kill his family for their part in his mother’s death, but he’s killed by a demon possessing his father before he can. Except instead of dying, he unlocks the [Hidden Slayer] class, giving him the power of a demon core. Of cultivation. There is a larger plot at play here—by demons and other forces that are beyond him. But all that means is that he has a demon invasion to get out of his way. Then his father and brother both will pay. What to expect: - MC slays - Big level ups, big power scale - Slow burn demon core cultivation(s)

I need more people in the stormweaver/iron prince fandom for so many reasons that I’ve compiled a list
The story is great and doesn’t get nearly enough attention Whatsoever
CADs??? They’re so cool??? Like “yes this is living evolving armor that grows with you and adjusts to your needs, there’s multiple weapon types/categories and they come in COOL COLORS like pink and black and blue and purple and green instead of just silver and they’re all individualized” seriously there’s a character whose professional fighter name is Stone Lily and she has bright pink and gray armor and absolutely Wrecked people in the SCTs (professional simulated fighting tournaments)
CADs can also get special abilities as they evolve and get more individual the higher their level
Anyways I need people who make self inserts and OCs and assign them CAD Types and design their armor because imo it’s much more interesting than Harry Potter houses (sorry not sorry)
the characters are Cool and I know people on here would go Feral for them
I know that someone (or multiple someones) on this website would probably imprint on Logan Grant the second he appeared on screen because he is an Asshole Pretty Boy with (spoilers) ………………………..a tragic backstory
Rei is The Best I Love Him and I want him to live his best life and Destroy People. He’s our MC and he’s got really fun to read characterization, is disabled, and kicks butt
There are multiple women with interesting, strong characters
one of the main characters (Viv) is openly bisexual and very clear that she has a preference for women but DOES like men and if you try to make her choose she will tell you to stick it where the sun don’t shine
Valera Dent could literally glare down her nose at me and I would thank her
As the books (2 out so far) go on there’s more and more casual queer characters that Exist like normal people
the world is pretty narrow focus right now because a lot of the setting is in just a few places but there’s a lot of potential for HUGE worldbuilding as our MCs get more powerful
theres more to this list but I’m posting it now because it’s getting long and I’ll forget otherwise

Unsouled Sizzle Reel - FIRST LOOK!
youtube
Cradle Sizzle Reel First Look!
First of all. Holy shit I'm so excited this is so cool and I can't way to see if fully animated. This is going to be killer for Will and Jay to show to studios.
Second. This isn't even the full sizzle reel. Jay and Will have talked about what all will be going into the reel and this isn't even half of it.
Third: This is essentially what we'll be getting at the first goal of the Kickstarter, except 80 whole minutes of it. 80 minutes of this covering Unsouled and Soulsmith. Its going to be amazing. And 80 minutes of this to show to studios is going to be an even stronger pitch.
Also though, like, what a genius decision to show these snippets through the lens of Suriel showing Lindon a possible future. What a fantastic delivery method for visual medium.
I'm excited and I only wish I could give more to the Kickstarter. I'm happy to know that Cradle is getting fully animated no matter what though. Once Jay and co have polished this up to the standards of their other work, there is no chance in hell that they won't be able to find someone willing to pick this up.

I got my Reddit promo posts going for Systemless and noticed, uh, LOTS of downvotes on these posts, which is not normal for the subreddits I posted to.
And some guy helpfully explained the reason why:
Not your fault you would probably get the same ratio had the book been pro nazi. People are tired of rainbow culture worming it's way into everything. Just saying not trying to be hateful.
When I called him rude for it...
Why is a statement of fact considered rude? Look to bud light target and disney all losing millions for pushing the rainbow ideology people are tired of it seeping into every corner of society trying to turn and corrupt kids. And was the pastel bright pink colors on the cover necessary is the book targeted at adults or kids?
GEE ISN'T IT FUN TO BE ACCUSED OF BEING A GROOMER WHEN I'M TRYING TO PROMOTE MY NEW COMEDY BOOK.
What do I even do at this point? Accept that this book is going to be a culture war battleground and not the fun reverse-isekai comedy I desperately want it to be? What do I even do in response to all this negativity?

Magic school book sale
Tumblr media
Into the Labyrinth, the first novel in my YA magic school series, Mage Errant, is a Kindle Daily Deal today! (November 15th.) Books 2&3 will be on sale as well for the next couple of days. Mage Errant follows the adventures of Hugh of Emblin, a young student mage whose magic doesn't want to work right- though his anxiety works just fine. Mage Errant features found family, a convoluted science-inspired magic system, a non-neurotypical protagonist, a queernormative setting, Machiavellian politics, lots of explosions, and more kaiju than you can shake a stick at. (Though, uh... I highly recommend against shaking sticks at kaiju in general.)
Mage Errant is heavily inspired by Diane Duane, Dianna Wynne Jones, Will Wight's Cradle, Andrew Rowe's Arcane Ascension, and a bunch of cheesy shonen anime. It's part of the new(ish) genre of progression fantasy, which is much more heavily focused on training and growing in power than average in fantasy. (I like to call the genre "books for people who like movie training montages way too much.")
The whole series is complete now, sans a short story anthology coming out in February. It's also getting a webtoon comic adaptation, which is super exciting! Oh, and whenever I got a bad review for having queer characters (of which I got MANY), I hit a mental button reading "make it gayer."

The third book in my series has released today!
Hello everyone! I'm announcing my third novel, The Abjurer, by me (Tobias Begley). It's a Queer Progression Fantasy novel with strong influences in Magical Academia, Sword and Sorcery, and Epic Fantasy.
This is the novel's description:
Evan Tailor needs to kill an Archmage.
If he can survive a party first.
With the Silver Queen calling in her debt, Archmage Roark's oaths binding him into assistance and silence, and new classes pulling at Evan from all sides, this year is not turning out to be the peaceful and prosperous introduction to abjuration magic that Evan had hoped for.
"There are so many excellent things I could say about The Enchanter, about how fresh its conflict is, how much fun the magic and setting are, but, in the end, the most important thing I can say about it? I stayed up late reading it until my eyes hurt, and then kept reading it anyways." – John Bierce, author of Mage Errant
"Deeply creative and intricately imagined, The Enchanter is a masterclass in crafting fantasy with a gentle but vibrant heart.” – Phil Tucker, Author of Bastion
"I wish I'd come up with the system of unique arch-stars myself." – Sarah Lin, Author of the Weirkey Chronicles

Over the last two weeks, I've put up four pilots. Now, you get to vote on which idea continues to be refined into a free web series. Below the poll, you will be given the title card/cover for every one of these five options, along with a link to the free public pilot, a brief 'elevator pitch', and what I enjoy the most about each series. Donate to my ko-fi or my patreon, and you will have access to all sixteen extra chapters.
Tumblr media
Creature Watching
Its pilot (Rest Stop) is on tumblr.
Churyl is the perfect city. If you don't look to deep into it. People from all around the world come to see what lies under the surface. And they never come back alive... Lots of uncanny valley stuff. Not outright scary all of the time, but just plain. Weird. Deals more with supernatural and folklore elements.
Tumblr media
EndWalkers
EndWalkers already has one volume out on RoyalRoad, with more than 100k words, which you can read here.
An action-packed story of a group of people jumping from apocalyptic dimension to apocalyptic dimension, playing out a video game in real life. With the first volume drawing to a close, the daily update schedule will be slowed down to a weekly one if it does not win this poll. There is a shapeshifting gay AND trans Muslim catboy (mecore) and Book 2 is in a world torn apart by a war between ravens and octopi, its great.
Tumblr media
Key Mates
Chapter One is on tumblr.
Anne and Flynn are discovered to be psychics. Except instead of any actual fun superpowers, they have the power to pick out a key that the other is thinking about or in contact in. People romanticize it constantly, but its useless in every way. Except for a heist. NOT a dig at romantic soulmate tropes, though they are referenced. I'm simply having fun with the implications of having a force that ties you together. How you would navigate relationships with other people and yourself too.
Tumblr media
Tumble Dried Pirates
Pilot is now live on tumblr
Xara is from the modern era, and a passionate advocate for freedom of information and archiving of content. You know... Piracy. When a dryer machine at her local laundromat spits out Elizabeth Carnegie, a pirate from the Golden Age of cut-throat violence and smuggling, she isn't prepared for her. Or the team of time-travel police who have now put a target on her back. Yes. They are lesbians. With a time traveling dryer machine. Also, classism!!
Tumblr media
Surviving Nulls
Pilot is live on tumblr!!
Nulls are monsters that feed off the magic of humans, sucking away until nothing is left. And Priscilla Farooq, widely regarded to have no talent for art, magic, or sport, finds herself in the unique situation to be the only one to stop it. Even if she thinks she's a little bit of nothing herself... This was written specifically to be an aspec fantasy. Priscilla is aplaroace. She simply doesn't feel any kind of love. And that's okay, even if it takes her time to come to terms with it. There are more aspec characters, too, showcasing the entire spectrum, and just queer people in general. Main character's atheist, but lots of Muslim relatives, and some Jewish side characters, some pagan, it's a mixed bag. This is also the only other series that will be posted on RoyalRoad, with more than daily chapter updates.

That's all! Consider donating if you're interested in reading more. ko-fi | patreon

It's all in the eyes! Geram has a skilled called Demeot Eyes that allows him to see the core of Other Beings. When he gets to evolve the skill, it does even more than that.
