I have a friend who gave me a workbook to help with suicidal ideation, something she uses with her patients. And she gave me permission to share it with others.

Emotional Regulation- what's it all about?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emotional regulation is the work of releasing pent up stress from your nervous system.
Your body has an entire system of automatic stress responses. Some of which can be born out of hard wired prolonged exposure to trauma in our childhoods.
With no proper regulation from our abusive & neglectful parents, many of us are still stuck in these same fear responses from our childhoods. Which means a lot of that fear, sadness, guilt, and shame, reappears in the form of how we cope now as an adult.
By learning how to recognize which state of survival you're in- and you can be in all states at different times and triggers- you can then work on giving your body a more directed route to releasing the pent up exhaustion, fear, tension, and panic.
Which in turn gives us more room to breathe easier when we are feeling stress, panicked, and triggered.
There are many techniques to help with emotional regulation. Somatics is the practice of moving your body to release the energy.
This is why everyone will scream yoga and exercise at you. But its not just limited to those two types of movements.
If you are bed bound, somatics can be as simple as raising your arms, lifting your legs, and rolling your neck.
The key idea is to recognize when you're overwhelmed, panicked, and triggered in your day to day life. Work real hard on bringing these moments into your awareness. What are your thoughts like? What are your reactions?
From there we work to integrate a basic somatic framework over time. This can look like working hard to incorporate some form of comfort, movement, and acceptance for the physical discomforts of these moments.
A basic framework can include:
Butterfly hugs (put ur hand over ur heart)
Self hugs
Hold your shoulders
Rub your shoulders, arms, tummy, and legs
Lift ur shoulders, shake ur arms, clench ur fists
Wiggle in ur seat
Raise ur legs, stomp your feet gently in place, roll ur ankles
Deep breathing
Groaning, sighing, screaming, making noise
Humming or singing
Outwardly showing emotions on your face
Cold/warm compress or towel
Weighted blankets or comfort items
Sensory stems
These are just a few examples. You can literally do whatever types of movements that feel natural for you.
The secondary idea of emotional regulation is self expression.
That's why it's okay to groan and scream and be loud and expressive in these moments, if you need to. Remember that most often panic attacks, stress, anxiety, and triggers are deeply emotional responses to very personal scenarios and traumas that we have endured in our past. Some of these fears stem from some really scary places. It makes a lot of sense that you might need to scream, cower in fear, or use facial expressions in these moments.
Oftentimes in abusive environments we are restrained from doing so by our abusers. When in reality, these are the standard reactions for what we went through. These are the types of reactions that our bodies are repressing.
It can feel overwhelming to think about acting in such ways, especially if you're not able to practice these in peace, solitude, and safety. But please know that how you cope is an extremely personal and extremely precious part of who you are. Do whatever you need to do for your health and safety and stability and peace of mind. That should be the main goal.
One last thing about emotional regulation to remember, is that the goal is to not be "happy" or at a "peaceful baseline" all the time.
The goal is to allow the anger, allow the sadness and grief and all other emotional signals in-- and then express them in healthier ways than what you're doing now.
Because at the end of the day, groaning and pitching an intended hissy fit in the privacy and safety of your own home, is a much better and healthier way to cope than hurting yourself.
Allow your inner teen the proper emotional outlets your parents stole from you.
This is the work of emotional regulation.

"The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) communicates to us through our feelings and our sensations in the body. By learning how to recognize our ANS states, we can become better equipped with knowing what we can do to help ourselves in times of discomfort or distress.
Many people are aware of the fight/flight state, but there is often confusion with freeze and shut down states, which are actually different.
Dorsal vagal shutdown is a state of parasympathetic collapse, and because of this, a little movement and stimulation of the vagus nerve (since this nerve governs the parasympathetic response) is helpful. On the other hand, a freeze state is a mixture of sympathetic and parasympathetic (the dorsal vagal shutdown) immobilization, which to our nervous system is like having a foot on the gas and a foot on the brakes at the same time. In this state, the nervous system needs to be shown safety, so it can come out of paralysis, relax and then move energy as needed.
A telltale physical sign of being in freeze is having very tight, sore muscles, or noticing you are 'bracing' in your body, as if preparing for impact. Panic attacks can also occur in the state, which is a step beyond the anxiety experienced and fight/flight.
The aim of all the suggested exercises in this post is to help the body come into a healthy (not dorsal vagal shutdown!) parasympathetic state- ventral vagal- but to get there, you might journey from freeze to fight/flight for example, or dorsal vagal to fight/flight. This is very normal and can be explained wonderfully by the Polyvagal Ladder (see the teachings of Deb Dana for more). The goal is to not be in ventral vagal all the time. Our nervous system is highly intelligent and will flow between states as needed, thus the aim is to allow this flow, versus getting stuck in any shut down, freeze, or fight/flight state for too long."
[C-PTSD symptom wheel source- Lindsay Braman]
"This new C-PTSD symptom wheel resource is a tool for education and for advocacy.
The World Health Organization's diagnostic criteria for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are split into 8 distinct categories. These categories were mapped by Dr. Wei-May Su and Dr. Louise Stone in an Australian medical journal in 2020. Simplifying and then building off their work* to highlight specific ways these symptom categories show up in a survivor's life, I've created this radial chart showing how the constellation of symptoms experienced by survivors of complex trauma can be organized under the heading of C-PTSD.
I often avoid creating art that can be used for diagnosis or self-diagnosis, but the fact is, resources and awareness are desperately needed on the topic of C-PTSD. See, although it has been recognized by the World Health organization since 2020, the USA's diagnostic manual, the DSM-5, doesn't include C-PTSD. Because it's omitted from the DSM, many therapists aren't trained to recognize it or treat it. Insurance won't cover treatment, and too often people get misdiagnosed and given ineffective treatments.
Historically, mental health providers haven't done a great job of understanding and categorizing experiences of complex trauma survivors, but through education and advocacy, we can change that."

Hope this helps

Help me out - there's some good info on tumblr about eating with low spoons/depression. Two I'm trying to hunt down again:
A cookbook, available for free on a platform like itch.io or something, that was all about making simple meals for low energy days. From what I remember the creator made it available as pay what you want and/or free because they wanted people to have it.
A page-sheet, illustrated with a bunch of staple foods (bread, eggs, cheese, peanut butter) and ideas for how to combine them.
If you've got any ideas, or a resource like it that you love, send 'em my way, would you?

I love Beauyasha so much. I miss them so much.
The reunion gave me so much joy and now I'm in this weird happy but melancholy state. I love the Nein so much and I want more of them. And I especially want more of Beau and Yasha. If we get a Fjorester wedding one shot, I will be stoked. But then also give me the Beauyasha wedding too!
I'm really just hoping they keep doing these little reunions cause I love the Mighty Nein so much and seeing them makes me so happy.

Communication Exercise
For speaking with others
One of the things I struggle with most in therapy, and in my personal relationships, is expressing my feelings and emotions.
Apparently, there are more emotions than just "scared," "anxious," "upset," or "tired".
Who knew?
In the heat of the moment, I seem to lose all ability to find more accurate words, and I'm not the only one. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, this is a very common experience. Recognizing and putting words to your emotions can be incredibly difficult, and many trauma survivors struggle with it.
My therapist had me build a "wall" of emotions-- lists of emotions that I could look at, in the moment, to figure out what I needed to convey. I think, at most, I had a collage of ten-fifteen random papers stuck to the wall in the living room when I was at my worst.
Words like:
Tumblr media
And I started adding my own words to it.
Drained
Humiliated
Indifferent
Distrustful
Paranoid
Stressed
Big sucky baby
All of these words can convey what you're really feeling in a more accurate way, and can help your friends and partners respond appropriately and ask the right questions to be able to help.
Keep them in a notebook, tape them to the fridge, make a folder on your phone.
"Hold on, I need my words," is a valid, good reason to pause, breathe, and examine yourself.
I was genuinely, pleasantly surprised by how adjusting the accuracy of my emotional language changed my conversations with my partners and helped me figure out what I needed to feel better.

Gonna finally watch season 4 and 5 this week and see how things end. I swear to god if I spend my two days off crying bc of what happens I will eat my window. I’m so nervous for Ed and Oswald’s relationship bc I’m so emotionally invested in them it’s not even funny.
I’ve read some posts that season 4 is like everyone’s divorce arc and idk if I’m emotionally prepared for that. I watched JJBA (Jojo’s bizarre Adventure) in highschool and sobbed so much for a week straight after Stardust Crusaders that I got sent to the counselor’s office for concerning behavior.
Someone tell it’s gonna be ok please 😭😭😭😭

world's finest (1990) #1
[ID: two in-universe drawings from two different orphan children talking about their heros. The first one is by Ann Gray, who's eight years old. She drew a surprisingly decent photo of Batman in front of a yellow background and wrote, ‘My hero — Batman. He is strong and fierce and he can beat anyone. He is very tall. He wears a cool suit with a bat on. He is not afrade of bullits and he saved my life (true). No one nows his reel name or address. the biggist crinminel in all the world could not make him sorender. Batman keeps gothum city safe for everyone and pets.’
The second drawing is by Zachary Sikes who's 12 and a half years old. He drew a photo of Superman using his heat vision as he flies. He wrote, ‘My Hero — Superman. My hero is Superman. He is able to fly and I have seen him lift up a car (with 2 peeple in it). If you hit him in the face then he will just laff. Every one likes him and he saved my life once. The big S on his shirt is for his name (Superman). He lives in Metroplis (where I used to life also). He keeps everything there in law and order.’ END ID]

Japanese Youtube Channels I like
Vlogs and Lifestyle
in living. - She does fashion videos, hauls or simply videos about her everyday life. Also has a bunch of different channels for specific things like eg games. Sorekara Travel - Ryo does travel videos in Japan with a very...ambient feeling? There is not much overlay with music. I don't know what I am saying. 5歳からの同級生とルームシェア - Kaito and Kouki basically showcase their everyday life as roommates and often make cooking videos. It's a good channel if one wants to here more casual conversation. Se-ya - Vlogs. Interior. The music selection is just top tier too with the jazzy&retro vibe he has going on. あっちゃん - Your typical vlogs with a chill vibe. I don't have much more to say what kind of videos he makes.
Cooking
Kiwami Meshi - Do you know 'The Way of the Househusband'? Yeah, that's basically this channel. Also made a few recipes already, really good!! ご飯が美味しいch - Because of the nature of the videos it is rather a reading than listening practice but they are incredibly soothing.
Gaming and Art
Peco - A kind of god when it comes to Zelda Breath of the Wild but is also playing other (Nintendo) games these days. Does mostly livestreams you can rewatch at any time. 花江夏樹 (はなえ なつき)- Voice actor by day, youtuber at night. Just plays a variety of games, often with friends, and it's very entertaining. Archipel - Documentaries about Japanese creators and artists. 北原ユシキ/画景-kakkei- - Just an illustrator I really like who often streams. Watecolor with Shibasaki - Just a Japanese grandpa, or Japanese Bob Ross, teaching you how to paint.

Ways I cope with trauma as someone who is not ready /unable to open up about it to a professional
-art. Making vent art. Or edits aka “traumacore” stuff. It feels like im not keeping it to myself which is a relief. But it brings emotions to the surface which can be triggering.
-music that reminds me of the trauma. It doesn’t have to be about the trauma specifically. Songs that remind me of my old mindset. Songs that remind me of the dynamics I had with my abusers. Songs that remind me that they will get karma one day. It’s comforting and helps me release anger.
-writing. This is the most recent tool I’ve been using. I’ve written about my trauma before but this method is using creative writing. It is not uncommon for people to project onto OCs, which is what I do. Writing out their mindsets helps me process how my trauma affected my mental health. I didn’t intentionally do this as a coping skill; I just wanted to write. But writing down my OCs thought processes has helped me.
-talking to other trauma survivors. I do this rarely but it helps to vent on subreddits like r/CPTSD. This account is also helpful, and I find that giving advice to others makes me feel better.
