The Architecture of Heartbreaks
by tigersugargirl
T, WIP, 5k, Wangxian
Summary: In the span of days, the foundations of Wei Wuxian's bright, idyllic life crumbles : His aunt discovers that he's dating a boy and disowns him for shaming the conservative Jiang family, and he finds out that Lan Wangji, the guy he's dating, has only been dating him as part of a bet. Left adrift, Wei Wuxian nevertheless tries to slowly rebuild his life, with the help of his friends and the kindly Uncle who shares his love for historical buildings. It's nothing grand, but he thinks he's on his way to building a small, warm home for himself in the world. But when Lan Wangji is finally forced to face his feelings for Wei Wuxian and comes knocking on that painstakingly built home, will Wei Wuxian let him back in? Kay's comments: This story hasn't been updated in a hot minute, but it shouldn't deter you from reading it. I already love the story it tells. In which, Wei Wuxian's life falls apart in one day. He gets kicked out by Madam Yu after it came out that he dated Lan Zhan and it's also revealed that Lan Zhan apparently only dated him as part of a bet. However, there are still people who have Wei Wuxian's back. Chief among them He Su (and I love, love, love it when he appears in stories, he's a chronically forgotten character) and Lan Qiren (who doesn't know that the guy who broke Wei Wuxian's heart is his nephew rip). Excerpt: And three months ago, Lan Wangji told him he loved him, and Wei Wuxian had thought that like that, his life was just perfect. Now, three months later, Wei Wuxian is chased out of his own home - Someone had seen him with Lan Zhan and told Madam Yu, and he is given barely an hour to pack his things. A bad influence, she screams. An immoral wretch like you, just like your mother. Now, three months later, Wei Wuxian stands in the middle of a room of laughing, drunken people as Meng Yao calmly, almost sweetly, congratulates a drunken Lan Zhan for upholding the end of his bet for three months : Dating the campus flirt Wei Wuxian. Now, three months later, the foundations of Wei Wuxian's life cracks and crumbles - spider-like cracks creeping through the walls of his heart, shattering his windows and buckling his columns. He runs past laughing, jeering people, through the open doors, and doesn't look back.
pov alternating, modern setting, modern no powers, homophobia, college/university, fake/pretend relationship, break up, implied/referenced abuse, rich lan wangji, student lan wangji, student wei wuxian, volunteer wei wuxian, families of choice, good uncle lan qiren, healing

the wangxian + a-yuan "dads with an adopted son" thing is fine and enjoyable in fanfics honestly but I think we as a fandom are really not utilizing the idea of all of them in unconventional familial structures enough. Like, canonically it wasn't so much that wwx was a-yuan's guardian as that a-yuan was being raised collectively by the wens and wwx was adopted INTO the larger wen family. And lwj got attached to him through that. A-yuan just has these very attached weird uncles/older cousin figures that aren't related to him by blood at all but keep sticking around.
Just think of a modern AU with a lot less death where lwj does as he does in canon and keeps showering a-yuan in gifts as much as he can and when wwx is like "aiyah lan zhan you're gonna spoil him. Not everyone is as rich as you! What's his family supposed to say if they can't buy him all the stuff you do?" lwj just goes "Hm". And from then on out every year once a-yuan's birthday is near the extended Wen family members (well. the ones that are invited that is. No one wants wen chao at a birthday party) wakes up to a wechat payment from lwj.
Random wen cousin number 6 texts granny like
cousin 6: i just got 400 yuan????
granny: oh that's just wangji
cousin 6: i've never met this guy in my life???
granny: he wants you to buy a-yuan a nice birthday present!
cousin 6: how does he know my bank account???

Lan Wangji actually isn't a perfect character because he doesn't have an equine companion despite his rampant rich horse girl energy. Give him his own horse goddamn it

I wish I could go on about mdzs like I do about scum villain because while I absolutely adore both books Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are kind lacking the burning trashfire dragged through mud energy I need to properly shit post on them. Like yeah they're funny but they're not having a mental breakdown because they discovered that pegging and service tops existed as they fumble through basic healthy levels of communication level funny.
Like Wei Ying isn't going to get in a hairpulling fist fight at 3 am in the Wal-Mart parking lot because some bitch took the last copy of the lastest switch game sensation that was secretly on sale at this one location for almost half off and almost bite off a leg in the process. Screaming obsenties and yelling at airplane over and over as they break every object in their cart because despite being rich man is still going to do this
And lan wangji isnt learning how to fuck with his rivals car engine and break system so conveniently they'll have a minor accident that will delay their coffee date which would be oh so sad and can't be pinned on him despite the grease stains on his hand. Oh is this seat taken? Dont mind if I do hahahaha funny coincidence.
No they're too busy buying veggies at the local famers market holding hands and kissing wholesomeness. They have pta meetings and local kids soccer teams to cheer at and non sexually charged pottery class where Wei Ying is desperately trying to make matching mugs and tiny tea plates but they turn out lopsided so Lan Wangji makes bowls to match along with one of those things that latches onto the side and holds your chopsticks or spoon or whatever and they're so in love. They're so sincere. Gross
Like those bitches are too normal and wholesome. I cannot drag them through the mud. If I do they'll get cleaner despite this reverse car wash nonsense.

CEO Billionaire Lan Zhan
by detention_notes (@detention--notes)
T, 2k, Wangxian
Summary: Oh, Wei Ying. Would he ever notice a humble billionaire such as Lan Zhan? Wei Ying, with his Costco T-shirts...his lilting smile...his sexy, sexy financial ineptitude... Lan Zhan burst away from the window and then ripped apart his bed canopy with his bare hands. After the destruction was complete he shivered and called his bank. “500k. Wei Ying. Wire transfer,” he said lowly into the phone. The teller asked for his name. “Anonymous,” he growled. He bit his arm with passion. Kay's comments: In hours of sadness and despair, CEO Billionare Lan Wangji comes to me and cheers me up. This story is a parody on the whole rich Lan Zhan in modern settings genre and it's absolutely wonderful. Never fails to make me laugh. Also, make sure to check out the author's accompanying Art! Excerpt: The man at the cafe counter paused mid-sentence and stared. He wore a red shirt with flame decals on the sleeve, a black apron, and a black baseball cap. Under the brim peeked delightfully jaunty bangs. And under those bangs, a large pair of glimmering gray orbs bored sorely into Lan Zhan’s core. “...May I help you?” Lan Zhan asked from his place in the queue after a beat of sensual silence. “Wh— oh! That’s supposed to be my line,” giggled the coffee man, ignoring the rest of the customers. He lowered his eyelashes in a sultry fashion. “Everybody calls me Wei Wuxian, even though courtesy names have not been customary since the early 20th century. But you can call me Wei Ying,” he said with a broad wink. “How may I help you?” he growled. Lan Zhan froze. People never talked to him this way, so...flirtatiously!

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part two
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
What a Relief
After spending a few weeks in Gusu doing...stuff, our trio comes to Jinlintai for the discussion conference. Unusually for a CQL stair-climbing scene, nobody is planning to murder anyone once they get to the top.
Tumblr media
Our crew walks up the stairs past 3 massive sculpted reliefs featuring Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
First and most important, I have to point out that the sculpture version of Lan Xichen [edit: Nie Mingjue actually, whoops] is wearing a sash that looks like this:
Tumblr media
*cough*
Meanwhile, for the picture with the sword and flames, qhanzi.com tells me that the written characters are 伏殺, fú shā; Google translate tells me this means "ambush." Specifically Fu=conceal, Sha=kill. Ballsy to have a monumental artwork on your front steps announcing that you're a backstabbing turncoat, Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
Speaking of balls, Jiang Cheng jumps at the opportunity to bust some when the Lan bros arrive with Wei Wuxian in tow. He pretends not to know who Wei Wuxian is, but obviously does know something, given how bitchily he asks to be introduced. Lan Wangji continues his 13-year-long silent treatment of JC while Lan Xichen tries to figure out which bland smile he's meant to be deploying in this situation.
(more after the cut!)
They're all rescued by the appearance of Jin Guangyao 3.0, who has discarded his Nie braids and his Wen hotness in favor of Jin ostentatiousness.
Tumblr media
He's no longer wearing the v-neck robe and topknot crown that we associate with the cultivation sects. Instead he's wearing a hat and a round-necked robe with a big embroidered design on the chest, that resembles the clothing style of a court official.
Some people see JGY's bureaucratic wardrobe as signaling that he's an unassuming administrator, someone who is not threatening to the power structure or is not ambitious. I see it more as conveying that his ambition reaches beyond the cultivation sects into the realm of dynastic/imperial politics.
Anyway, Jiang Cheng turns his ire towards his nephew, and Lan Xichen relaxes again. Possibly he is a little too relaxed, judging by how he's ogling Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
I'm high as a kite, I just might stop to check you out
Party Monster
Fanfics are often accused of giving us an out-of-character (OOC) Wei Wuxian, but no fanfic Wei Wuxian is as OOC as the Wei Wuxian who attends this banquet. Normally Wei Wuxian is a mildly annoying flirt, but as soon as soon as he arrives in Koi tower he is (presumably) possessed by the spirit of Jin Guangshan, and becomes a gross sex pest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He goes out of his way to hit on the wife of the clan leader and make googly eyes at all of the maids, whose social status doesn't allow them to be rude to him. And he does it in front of his date! What the hell, possessed Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
While oblivious to Lan Wangji's jealousy, Wei Wuxian does check in with him to make sure it's ok to put on his "crazy Mo Xuanyu" act. LWJ replies with a certain amount of salt, but once Wei Wuxian makes it clear he's thinking about Lan Wangji's public face, LWJ chills out and answers him normally.
Side note: in no universe would this cute lil maid be making eyes at heavily-masked Mo Xuanyu when unmasked, radiant, filthy-rich Lan Wangji is right there to be smiled at.
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao greets everyone and some dancers start doing their thing; mercifully, possessed Wei Wuxian refrains from hitting on the dancers. As soon as Jin Guangyao starts to circulate through the room, Nie Huaisang has an epic nervous breakdown all over him, which is even better entertainment than the dancers.
Tumblr media
This gives Wei Wuxian the cover he needs to slip out of the hall unnoticed. Well, as long as nobody notices Lan Wangji's obvious pining.
Fight Club
The prophecy foretells that into each generation of Jins will be born one douchebag cousin. Jin Chan is the douchebag cousin of his generation.
Tumblr media
Jin Chan accuses "Mo Xuanyu" of being a sex pest, and Wei Wuxian suddenly understands why the plot made him act so OOC at the party. Mo Xuanyu wasn't really a sex pest; he was a regular pest, trying to get information out of Qin Su, not trying to seduce her. But he doesn't know that yet. In other adaptations Mo Xuanyu is gay, but CQL exists in a strange censorship-created realm in which gayness is pervasive but never mentioned, and therefore there is no homophobia. So nobody would care if Mo Xuanyu was gay.
When Wei Wuxian realizes what Mo Xuanyu did, he thinks "Mo Xuanyu, do you want to die?"
Tumblr media
Nice choice of idiom, Wei Wuxian. I believe we have firmly established that yes, Mo Xuanyu absolutely did want to die.
The show is kind of vague, verbally, about whether Wei Wuxian 2.0 has a golden core. But there are a lot of moments that strongly suggest he does, at this point, have a functioning core.
Tumblr media
This rock attack is, I hope, one of those moments, or else Jin Chan is a total pussy, getting knocked back by landscape gravel.
Next, Wei Wuxian shows Jin Ling the super-secret move known as "arm twisting," which Jin Ling, as an only child, has never encountered before.
Tumblr media
Anyone with siblings is very familiar with this move.
Because this is The Untamed, this move should be executed with extra spinning whenever possible.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling learns the move right away, and uses it to win the scuffle.
Avuncular
After the fight, Wei Wuxian sits with Jin Ling for a chat, and gives him the classic uncle advice "have as many fights as possible while you're young, because when you're older you'll have to be mature and get along with people."
Tumblr media
I love Wei Wuxian so much.
For contrast, Jin Ling says that Jin Guangyao tells him not to get in fights. This makes Wei Wuxian seem like the cooler elder, but it also has a more sinister element, of Jin Guangyao holding Jin Ling back. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian grew up constantly fighting with each other--sparring as well as informal fights, presumably. And their cultivation was super strong, partly as a result of that.
Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to tell Jin Ling that he's not in love with Qin Su any more, because he's transferred his affections to someone else. Obviously Hanguang-Jun is the someone else, given that they've been inseparable for weeks. To keep Jin Ling from yelling while he explains, he clamps his hand over Jin Ling's mouth.
The thing is, in order to effectively clamp your hand over someone's mouth, there has to be something behind them--a wall, the mattress, your own torso, or something else solid. Otherwise they can just jerk their head backwards to get away from your hand. Or they can stand up and walk away, even.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling, hilariously, does not realize this, and spends a ridiculously long time sitting still and making angry faces while Wei Wuxian rests his hand on his face.
Spy Game
Later that night, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get ready for some shenanigans.
Tumblr media
Not the sexy kind, alas, just some paperman snooping.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian, because he's facing serious danger, is feeling extra playful and cute, and he takes time to goof around with Lan Wangji before getting down to business.
Tumblr media
In paperman form, he's able to do some things that the censors overlook, including tugging on Lan Wangji's headband and apparently blowing him a kiss. In the book and the donghua, he catches onto Lan Wangji's lip on his way down his face, too.
Tumblr media
One thing that's kind of muted in the live action as compared to the novel is how much Lan Wangji enjoys Wei Wuxian's childish and playful behavior. Lan Wangji never got to be playful as a child, but with Wei Wuxian he can cut loose--which he does mostly in the sack or when they're drinking together. But even when he stays in control of himself, he likes Wei Wuxian's silliness.
He tells Paper-Xian, tenderly, to be very careful, before he sends him on his way.
The Adventures of Paperman
The CGI department outdoes itself with paperman, making an animated character so adorable I'd be happy to watch a whole episode of him.
Tumblr media
Paper-Xian sneaks into JGY's study and pokes around, finding an empty envelope. Then he listens and watches while Qin Su stumbles in, retching.
She's followed closely by Jin Guangyao; they proceed to have an absolutely fucking endless argument in which the words "sister," "brother," "incest" "rapist dad" are never said, instead using vagueburger phrasing like "this matter."
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao does freely admit to killing their kid, though, and wants to know who told Qin Su about it so he can kill them, too. She won't tell him, shockingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao ends the fight by putting a paralysis spell on his wife and then making her go to sleep with another spell, which is the cultivator equivalent of saying "I've said what I had to say and I need some space."
He takes her into a secret room where he is also keeping a bunch of talisman-protected stuff and a shockingly small number of books.
Tumblr media
Seriously, as a person who has way too many books, I am personally offended by the way Jin Guangyao wastes shelf space in his secret room.
As Paper-Xian sneaks around the room, Jin Guangyao helpfully pulls aside the curtain covering the shelf with Nie Mingjue's head on it, so he can grouse at NMJ for (figuratively) haunting him. Seriously? Dude, you keep a guy's head on your bookshelf, he gonna haunt ya.
Tumblr media
The episode ends with Paper-Xian bowing (adorably) to Nie Mingjue, and then sitting laying on his face, which would make BOTH Lan brothers jealous if they found out.

[LIFESTYLE] Lan Wangji announces engagement with influencer Wei Wuxian after leaked photos
by Su Minshan
On the last Thursday (12), an anonymous account on Weibo leaked photos of Lan Wangji and influencer Wei Wuxian on a high-end restaurant in Thailand, in what appeared to be a date.
Earlier this evening (20), the Lan Wangji's official Weibo account published a note announcing his engagement.
[picture of statement]
Lan Xichen, Lan Wangji's older brother and current CEO of Cloud Recesses conglomerate, has shared pictures with the couple in his personal account in a show of support. As well as the Jiang siblings, Jiang Wanyin and Jiang Yanli, together with the Jin heir and Jiang Yanli's fiancee, Jin Zixuan. Fashion Designer and heir of Nie Security, Nie Huaisang, had a different approach and shared a selfie with a caption saying he's, supposedly, the one who's going to design the couple's attire.
Wei Wuxian got his fame through social media, sharing pictures and videos of tourism and local cuisine, as well as vlogs of his life and tips to get discounts on expensive places. Getting more noticed when befriended Nie Huaisang, going to clubs and bars together in recent videos.
We tried to contact Lan Wangji's uncle and former Cloud Recesses' CEO, Lan Qiren, but haven't received an answer until the closing of this article.

"Ugh I hate it here." Wei Wuxian whined, slumping against the kitchen island and almost falling off the high stool.
"Are you reading comments on the internet, A-Ying?" his mother looked over her shoulder while cutting fruit beside the sink.
"...No..."
"Stop lying, you're bad at it."
"Ugh!"
Cangse Sanren chuckled and put the knife down "What are they saying?"
"I'm a gold digger, Lan Zhan's dumb, variations of that. They're even trying to drag Huan-ge's down again." Wei Wuxian pouted, waiting for his plate of bunny shaped apple slices.
"You? A gold digger?" Cangse Sanren laughed loudly, drying her hands "As if!"
"What are you laughing at, now?" another voice joined them.
"Baba! Mama is making fun of me!" Wei Wuxian whined loudly.
"Is she?" Wei Changze lifted an eyebrow in amusement.
"Our A-Ying is being called a gold digger by strangers on the internet." Cangse Sanren chuckled.
"Our son, a gold digger?" Wei Changze repeated in a flat voice "That's something I wanted to see."
"Hey! Stop making fun of me! I'm your son! You're supposed to love me unconditionally and protect me! You cruel, cruel, parents!"
The couple only laughed together.
"Should we leak information, then?" Wei Changze suggested, stealing a bunny apple from his son's plate.

Mdzs modern au where Wei Wuxian is Wen Qing's beard. So the situation goes like this, Wen Qing has a rich uncle that pays for her education on the condition that she gets good grades and shit, when she got into med school Wen Chao, that bitch, let it slip to his dad that Wen Qing was a lesbian, in order to secure her bag she told her uncle that he was lying and that she actually had a boyfriend, of course her uncle then wanted to meet said boyfriend and then enters Wei Ying, Wen Ning's best friend and the perfect man for the job. Unlike most fake dating AUs this one doesn't end up with them together, it ends with Wen Qing graduating then finding out that her uncle didn't care that she was gay, bro has had gay sex himself so he can see the appeal, and Wei Wuxian eloping with Lan Wangji (who may or may not have been praying on that relationship's downfall since day one), everyone is happy except Wen Chao

one of the most obviously sad and frustrating things about wei wuxian is the way in which everyone assumes the worst of him All Of The Time. whilst this clearly encompasses classist rich dicks like jin zixun and the people who make up evil myths about the yiling patriarch, even ostensibly virtuous characters like nie mingjue and lan xichen are constantly suspicious of him. jiang cheng is a classic example - despite loving his brother, he finds it easier to believe that he's lazy or out of control than interrogate his motives. even love of my life lan wangji, prior to wwx's resurrection, doesn't stop to consider that wwx might have good reasons for not retaking the sword path beyond a greed for power so out of character, it's laughable. having said all of that:
SHOUTOUT TO JIANG YANLI WHO NOT ONLY LOVED HER BROTHER DEEPLY, BUT FIERCELY AND DEMONSTRABLY. SHE *ALWAYS* ASSUMED THE BEST OF HIM AND DEFENDED HIM. GRIEF NEVER BLINDED HER. IRONICALLY, CONSIDERING HER BUDGET MR-DARCY-ASS HUSBAND, THE WORD ""PREJUDICE"" DID NOT EXIST IN HER VOCABULARY. JIANG YANLI SAW THE SOCIAL HORRORS OF THE CULTIVATION WORLD AND SAID NOT TODAY AND NEVER MY A-XIAN. I MISS HER. JYL FOR CHIEF CULTIVATOR 623 BC.

Lan Wangji, the magnus archives au
my sweet sweet lonely boy lwj is in fact gay and commits eldritch crimes
tma has a chokehold on my soul
[SUPPLEMENTAL]
•Lan Wangji in this au is just the precious rich sheltered kid that gets whisked away by the bad boy and learns about the world through him. So basically nothing changed from the usual them.
•Look If one or two people were able to mysteriously leave the domain while on his watch, well that's none of your business.
•He was so surprised wwx was able to see him through the fog of the domain, like bitch you're not supposed to do that. He kept trying to hide from him, but wwx KEPT FUCKING FINDING HIM.
•Honestly wwx just annoyed him enough until he just HAD to fall in love with him. Again, nothing changed.
•He's just so happy and content just following his boyfriend wherever he wants to go and you bet he be looking enamored while watching wwx go batshit crazy blowing up rituals.
•He sucks at human interaction because he grew up away from society, wwx just reached the point of speaking in his behalf without him needing to say a word. Once again, NOTHING CHANGED.

Lacoste & BJYX. 💚
i’m seeing some posts about this so it’s time to share here and archive. since i love wardrobe and brand similarities, it only seems natural to add this too. tho lacoste is more on the common/popular side compared to the other brands we talked about. i’m v happy about wyb having this partnership with the brand because it aligns with his love for certain sports so it’s a perfect cooperation.
in 2019, lacoste really be fulfilling our BJYX dreams by sharing the fact that both of them wore their clothes 💪🏼 at the time they were very popular and it was okay to post about them together ; imagine if this was done now. lol.
Tumblr media
the caption was lovely too:
In the story, they are Lan Wangji, who looks cold but is sincere, and Wei Wuxian, who is extremely intelligent and casual. Off-screen, they picked up the same POLO shirt by chance, handsomely interpreting elegance and unruliness. Fairy friendship, like-minded people!
yep, what a friendship! 😏😏😏
another same wardrobe example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes, these ones are for professional magazine shoots which i would think are chosen by the team overseeing the project and not them personally. not to say they can’t choose and suggest, but that is less likely. wyb’s is vogue me april 2019 issue and zz’s is bella magazine march 2019.
youtube
very very close. dude. this is what makes it sus, how close it is. and you have zz posting about it, 3 photos of him wearing that matching lacoste pair. he wore other clothes in that shoot so why did he decide to take photos and share ones with him in lacoste? is he showing off? was it a clue? remember the date, CQL was not yet released. we already know they are gonna be lwj and wwx but the chaos was not that big yet. i’m here thinking that zz was being his usual cheeky self, showing off his clothes that they probably already talked about to be something that they will use. some may also say that this is PR on their side, to sprinkle in some cp flavor for the upcoming drama.
some other instances both of them were mentioned by the brand. i would imagine as soon as wyb is formally announced, their weibo will be filled with mentions of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is also an additional cpn with what wyb wore at the airport, lacoste-paris. because he is going to lacoste for paris. he is pretty smart with what he wears in public especially if he knows what he will be photographed.
Tumblr media
so does that mean some of our cpns and interpretations of his clothes are true?
Tumblr media
p3, p8 and p11 are not really cpn. only that his shirt says cherry LA when he went to LA. p8 and p11 are more on his love for skateboarding and motorcyles. the rest have a cpn attached to it 😂😂😂
cpn explanations as follows: p2 here. p4 here. p5 he wore a chanel necklace with 31 which is zz’s age and his bday was close. p6 is wyb wearing a mask that says smoking kills, right when bxgs were using the emoji 🚬🚬🚬 when explaining cpns. p7 wyb wearing a helmet with 29 when it was GG’s 29th bday.
p9 the infamous don’t bother me anymore hoodie & gg’s mistranslated/translation error hoodie both spotted on 10/8/2019. i won’t go into detail but that time was disastrous for them. yxh and antis spreading rumors and so wyb was straight up saying to not bother him, and xz was saying whatever it was, it was misunderstood.
p10, i miss you cap. lol this time tho wyb’s cap is still on point cause it says sporty and rich lol. which describes him. where is the lie? he is sporty and rich.
see? this is how we process cpn. with concrete examples. and why, a good number of us keep an eye out for what they wear.
whatever it is, we still win cause we finally get some yibo content! and two pfw shoes! 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻
-END.

Didn't want to derail that last post since it's specifically about novel canon, but it got me thinking about the ramifications of the changes that the drama makes:
CQL Mianmian is a Jin disciple. I like this change overall because it facilitates her being a larger part of the narrative and implies that Jin Zixuan has a life outside of being That Rich Guy Wei Wuxian Hates. Still, as is also the case with Meng Yao and Lan Xichen due to them meeting earlier, it means that Jin Zixuan is defending someone already dear to him rather than protecting a stranger simply because it's the right thing to do. Don't shrug off his heroism yet, though, because...
A nameless Jin disciple is the one who tries to hand over Mianmian. Jin Zixuan (and only Jin Zixuan) strikes him down and says in disgust that he can't believe the Jin clan contains such cowards, or something like that. However, Mianmian herself reminds Jin Zixuan when they're giving up their swords that they're under orders from their sect leader to comply with whatever the Wen clan asks of them. Jin Zixuan's choice to defend Mianmian is potentially in defiance of his father's directive. (Why is Jin Zixuan willing to disobey his dad here but stays awkwardly silent during his family's BS at the Phoenix Mountain hunt and conference later on? Well, his dad's not in the room with him here.)
Su She is not involved here, as Lan Wangji is the sole representative from Gusu Lan. The selfishness/cowardice of trying to feed Mianmian to a monster is replaced with his (more socially unacceptable in-universe but IMO more sympathetic to the viewer) revealing the Cold Pond Cave secret. There aren't any Lans standing by as nobody but Lan Wangji does the right thing.
The hostages generally show a lot of solidarity! After Wen Chao punts Wei Wuxian deeper into the cave, everyone else climbs down after him. None of them responds to Wen Chao shouting questions from up above, forcing the Wen guards to climb down to their level to investigate. The Jin guy attacking Mianmian is an outlier, indicating a problem with Lanling Jin culture rather than the jianghu as a whole. They cooperate well when it's time to band together and escape!
So the takeaway in CQL canon isn't that everyone is a coward or overly concerned with politics except for the protagonist, his love interest, and Jin Zixuan for some reason, but more like... here are these young people and future leaders who are fully capable of acting together for the good of the group. They refuse to comply with their captors despite being unarmed, and they'll convince the older generation to take action against the Wen clan. (Nie Mingjue, the only sect leader who's part of the younger generation without an older relative's influence, has already been in open conflict with them.) And isn't it a shame, then, that Jin Guangshan--and his sect culture that would've excused feeding one of his own disciples to a demon turtle--is going to crush all of this.
*I initially assumed, when I started making this post, that Cloud Recesses in the novel gets burned after the indoctrination in retaliation for Lan Wangji's part in killing the Xuanwu of Slaughter. But the wiki timeline has the indoctrination still coming after Cloud Recesses is attacked? If that's the case, how do the Lan have that many disciples to send?
