Lecture 19: Early Springsteen! Here’s Bruce Springsteen performing live at Max’s Kansas City on August 10, 1972. Springsteen is introduced by the late Sam Hood (1943-2007), the emcee who booked the acts at Max’s. Note Springsteen’s intense acoustic style and his unique sound. Despite being called “Max’s Kansas City,” the venue was actually a popular night club and restaurant located at 213 Park Avenue South in New York City. Since its opening in 1965, it was a beloved haunt of artists, musicians, composers, novelists, poets, playwrights, actors, and assorted countercultural hipsters. Springsteen’s powerful live performances moved audiences at Max’s, including David Bowie, who introduced himself to the Boss at Max’s in 1973. As Bowie recalled; “I became a major fan that night and picked up [Springsteen’s first album Greetings From] Asbury Park immediately.”

Kimberley (Kim) Ann and Kelley Jennie Deal (born June 10, 1961)are identical twin sisters known for being part of the band The Breeders. Kim is best known as the bassist for the band Pixies. She joined the band in 1986. and the band had moderate success throughout the late ‘80s- mid-‘90s. Kim sang and wrote one of the tracks for the band’s albums. The band went on hiatus after they released their most popular album, Dolittle. During that time off, she formed the band The Breeders with her sister Kelley, Tanya Donelly, and Josephine Wiggs. The band released the platinum-selling album Last Splash. The single’” Last Splash” from that album was all over the radio and MTV. The Breeders gained so much success because they were one of the first female-led alternative bands made in the mainstream. You can hear Kim’s songwriting in most of The Breeders’ songs.Pixies decided to break up in 1993; most members had moved on to other projects. In 1994, Kim went on to form the band The Amps. Shortly after joining, Kim left the band and went into drug rehab. After some much-needed time apart, Pixies reunited in 2004. Kim finally left Pixies in 2013 because it was better for her and the band. Kim is an amazing bassist. She plays with her sister and the other members of  The Breeders. Kelley and  Kim are talented musicians and songwriters; they play a great part in alternative Rock.

"Expert In A Dying Field" by The Beths (Cover)
The Beths are one of my favorite bands of all time. I’ve kinda been hooked since ‘Future Me Hates Me’, but the release of their latest record (‘Expert In A Dying Field’) very much solidified my love and forever-fandom for them. Their melodies and lyrics are quite unmatched for me; I don’t know of anyone else doing it better. Please enjoy this cover of the title track! Have you had a recent…

An Interview I did in 1984
Yesterday I came across an interview I did with the Telegraph-Journal (Saint John, NB) in 1984 when my my LP, “First Time since August” came out.  I had completely forgotten about the time I got robbed in Thunder Bay, Ontario until I reread this.
