for me it was actually your fic, but since its so normalized in the fandom to dismiss his trauma and call him a coward and annoying for doing things that other characters are loved for, i didn't really care about him when i first read the books

now hes my favorite

And wow, what a good question. I don't mind at all! I actually had to think about this for a while to try and remember…how the heck did I get here???

So here is my ridiculously uncalled-for POV on Kevin’s character and slow descent into madness below:

(Disclaimer that these are just my thoughts and anyone in the aftg fandom can hc or think whatever they like about Mr. Day 😊)

Like you, anon, I was easily swayed by Neil’s perspective of Kev on first read. It makes sense and is a credit to Nora how we so fully buy into Neil’s opinion of Kevin that many of us just run with it. And to be fair to the fandom, it’s canon – Andrew, Neil, and all the Foxes tell us he’s a coward and annoying and so we assume it must be true.

So, I created many fics that played into this image and focused on andreil. (Because who isn’t enamored with andreil??? Legit, deranged obsession and couple goals lmao). Using that lens, it was easy to make Kevin the punching bag because he is the quintessential “straight man” in comedy (and yes, I do hear the irony in that) – the foil to other characters to make them seem better, braver, funnier, smarter, etc. It’s an age-old trick/trope in fiction that works very well. And it was an easier transition for Nora to make, I think, once she made the decision to remove Kevin from the main narrative of her story.

This character setup works well enough when you’re doing a fic from Neil or Andrew’s POV, providing an easy source of humor to fall back on. So, for me, I think my thinking shifted once I started working on Flavors of Fall and delved into Andrew and Kevin’s storyline there. That fic forced me to think from Kevin’s perspective, and I found at the time I had a shallow understanding of what made Kevin tick. It totally threw me once I really started considering sequels for that fic and the 12 Day Program for Courtship, both of which have Kevin cast as a main character. I had to dive deep into his makeup, seriously considering his motivations, his likes/dislikes, his personality traits, his relationships, and how he would react in any given situation.

Because I was interested in his character development, I started delving into fics like orionauriga’s just pretend , @likearecordbb's Long Walk in the Woods, @thetrojeans daylights, sunsets, and @dayurno's the age of no regret series. They are all brilliant, fascinating character studies of Kevin Day and his relationships that are extremely well done. There’s many more, of course, but I was searching for fics that specifically delved into Kevin’s thought process and choices and stayed there a while.

That’s what led me to feeling like I needed to tell his story with Dead of Night. Of course, it turned into a larger series with my flavoring of Kerejean added because I’ve never been a huge Kevin/Thea relationship fan. (But that's a discussion for another day which you can start here and here for that adventure.)

Now all that I’ve described above gives you the mechanics of the descent – the when, the where, the how. But it crucially misses the why. What is it about Kevin that got me in the end?

Ironically enough, it was his potential.

I think when Nora stripped away any kind of romantic narrative (RIP Kandreil OR Riko/Kevin/Jean) or a chance for a tragic storyline (Kevin dying in the end) it resulted in removing a lot of Kevin’s emotional vulnerability. We don’t get to hear what he’s feeling or thinking unless it’s related to Riko, the Moriyamas, or Exy. This means his storyline is consumed by the stereotypical sports underdog story, with us following his rise to champion (which is still a powerful enough narrative on its own that shines even in the midst of Neil’s crazy plotline. Switching that racquet to his left hand in the championship game? Iconic.)

However, it leaves us very much with a shell of a person. Kevin’s character outside of Exy is reduced to a handful of facts – there’s a passing comment on his like of history, and the stark evidence of an alcohol addiction as a coping mechanism. We’re told he used to dance. That he learned French because Jean Moreau taught him. That he has no qualms about taking (mild?) drugs (cracker dust). Despite how much we’ve run with it as a fandom, the only allusion I’ve found in the books to him being strict with diet is this section from The King’s Men:

“No one needs to eat this before a game,” Kevin said. “Eat some granola or protein if you’re that hungry.” “Hello, there’s protein in the peanut butter,” Nicky said. “Let go of me before I tell Andrew you’re outlawing chocolate. I said let go. You’re not the boss of me. Ouch! Did you seriously just hit me?” … “Kevin, just let him go,” Neil said. “It’s not worth fighting over.” “When our defense is sluggish, we all suffer,” Kevin said.

From what I can find in the books, Kevin never once denies Andrew eating ice cream. (Which I’m 100% able to admit I might have missed something so feel free to quote me where that scene is because I was totally searching for it). In fact, every time they go to Sweetie’s, it’s implied Kevin orders ice cream with them. In the infamous kissing scene in The King’s Men, we actually have proof that Kevin got ice cream:

Kevin still hadn’t messaged Nicky by the time they reached the ice cream aisle, so Nicky gave in and called him. Neil half-expected Kevin to ignore Nicky’s call, but Kevin wasn’t so sour with them that he’d turn down a free snack…Nicky grabbed spoons from the kitchen and distributed pints to their hungry owners. Neil checked his expression when Nicky came back from dropping Kevin’s off….

Now I do think it’s in line with his character and his upbringing to have issues with food, so I’m all for buying into that specific hc. But we have very little evidence of it in the text.

His personality is reduced mainly to anger, arrogance, or cowardice (all traits that don’t make us sympathize with him). The only facts we have about his Tragic Past™️ are two things: his mother’s death, and his hand injury. Everything else we assume is based on Neil’s knowledge of the mafia, Wymack’s hearsay, Andrew’s deductions, and Kevin’s reactions to Riko and Tetsuji. We have literally no idea what happened to Kevin in the Nest. His trauma and his time spent there is a complete mystery. The closest we get is Riko’s comment to Neil in The Raven King:

“I am going to love hurting you,” Riko said, “like I loved hurting Kevin.”

This, I think, is one of the main reasons many of the fandom “dismisses” Kevin’s trauma in comparison to Neil’s because we can’t see it. We don’t know what happened and we don’t get to experience it, so this lack of explanation or motivation leaves us only with very cold personality traits. We’re unable to root for him as a character because we can’t sympathize. We can empathize because we know Very Bad Things™️ must have happened in the Nest, but we don’t see them happen the same way we do Neil or Andrew. Even Kevin’s hand injury is old and “healed” when we’re first introduced to the character.

The only true canon moment where Kevin appears “human” is in The Raven King with Kevin’s “then run” and “you should be court” conversation with Neil. His admittance that Neil’s life is more important than Exy is instantaneous – he doesn’t even pause to throw his Exy dreams down the drain if it means Neil can survive. In a weirdly parallel way, we see Kevin’s thought process implicit in his conversation: “at least you’d have a chance.” It is strikingly similar to Neil’s internal conversation of: one of us should make it. (And there’s another whole separate discourse I could get into on how Kevin and Neil are two halves of the same coin, but we’ll save that for another day.) But even the revelation of Wymack as his father has more shock value than true emotional weight – we never see what that conversation looked like or how either party actually reacted. (In some ways, I feel like Dan being pissed at Kevin is given more “screentime” than Kevin’s response to telling his father and how Wymack reacted.)

So with Kevin’s emotions and past firmly locked down, we’re left to brush off Kevin’s reactions (or lack thereof) as part of his indifferent personality. It is what it says on the tin. (And that’s not to say Kevin is a perfect character by any means. He has flaws just like every other character.)

Now some people very accurately depict and buy into those limitations as simply being Kevin’s character/personality – I’ve read some awesome fics where Kevin is Ace/Aro and/or on the spectrum. These are completely valid, extremely well done, and I could totally see why others see and write him this way. Canon practically sets them up for it.

For me, though, it circles back to our skewed view of Kevin given to us by some deeply loved but also deeply flawed characters (cough, Andreil). Those same characters that we’re told time and again not to judge them by their cover but to try and understand how they’re affected by (and make choices because of) their trauma.

While Andrew and Neil end up giving each other this grace through a hard-fought battle of truths and exchanges, they do not extend this same courtesy to Kevin, and neither are we given the chance to do so. We literally can’t because, again, we don’t know what the full extent of Kevin’s trauma is.

Kevin doesn’t talk about his time in the Nest to any character, meaning we know nothing about it. Ergo we don’t know what choices Kevin makes because of it. In The Foxhole Court, Wymack specifically tells us Kevin was Riko’s pet. In fact, there is so much specific language that Kevin himself uses around the concept of ownership, and that Nora uses when referring to him that it jarringly sticks out in the text. He has no sense of personal space or proper boundaries, viewing people only as assets to be used for the good of the team, which at the very least is a sign of mental abuse. But the fact remains that we just don’t know. We don’t know how far this mental abuse was taken, how often or severely he was injured, if he injured or was forced to injure others – we don’t know.

But it’s obvious whatever happened to him started as a child and built from there. Which means he has years of abuse and power dynamics embedded into him. He has every right to be afraid. In fact, we are demonstrably told and shown often in canon that Kevin is afraid…but fear does not equate to cowardice. In fact, we know that bravery often means being scared and doing something anyway. And in many cases, that’s just what Kevin did (with a crutch named Andrew). But even before he entered his deal with Andrew, it's important to remember that even though he was brainwashed and beaten from a young age to understand that he would die if he betrayed the Moriyama family in some way, he left them.

This is always so significant to me because so many abuse victims stay in their situation thinking/hoping/praying it will get better – either because of an idea that their abuser will change (“they’re just having a hard time at work rn”) or that the victim will fix whatever flaw the abuser finds lacking. Or alternatively, they recognize the situation is bad, but they can’t leave because they feel like they have nowhere to go, no one who will help them, trapped by their lack of skills/contacts/money. In Kevin’s case, both situations rang true. And yet he left. He left, and in only a year and a half’s time he recovered from his injury and led his team to the championship.

But he is only at the start of his recovery. I think he’ll need years of therapy to recover from all that happened in the Nest. I think many of his emotional and social shortcomings are a direct consequence of that timeframe and he did not have the freedom to address them until the threat of the Moriyamas was removed. I do not think they are permanent parts of his personality – I think in time, he will be allowed to grow and recover and contribute much more to his relationships than he’s capable of doing at the end of The King’s Men.

Though the series finished, I think Kevin’s story is just beginning.

That’s why I think he’s fascinating to explore as a character. That’s why I love writing him right now because in many ways, his possibilities are endless. There’s so many opportunities to explore different facets of his story that we never get a chance to in canon. Kevin’s character and narrative is a tantalizing tease which many of us have fell hook, line, and sinker for. (Including yours truly.) We want to rabidly sink our teeth into it and shake it, like a dog with a bone.

So we do. 😉

Phew. Okay, that’s enough. None of what I’ve written above is new I’m sure to those of the fandom who have been here since the beginning or have become diehard Kevin fans. But thank you for letting me ramble in this ask, anon. Writing about Kevin has been a very fun and therapeutic adventure for me. So I’m so glad that there are others out there who are enjoying it too 😊

In the all for the games fandom you really have 3 choices on the type of person you are. Either

1. You ship Kevin and Thea, you probably like to play it a little closer to canon and aren’t totally diving head first into fanon, you probably are also big fans of Renee and Allison and just like to see strong women!!

2. You ship Kevin, Andrew, and Neil, you’re the type of person who likes to point at the gay within a series. You probably shipped Wolfstar while reading Harry Potter, your also probably kinda kinky and like the idea of Andrew fucking Kevin messy in the back of his car

3. You ship Kevin and Aaron, at this point you’ve thrown canon out of the window. Canon? Wouldn’t know her. I feel like this ship is a little softer than the other 2 but I could be totally wrong about that lol.

But no matter which one of the 3 you are you definitely believe that Kevin Day is a bottom! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

I just had a realisation. If Riko didn't let Jean speak French, it would make sense that he didn't allow Jean to keep up with French culture (TV show, music, literature, etc...) either since Riko probably had no interest in it and would not let Jean enjoy something he could not understand, and Riko had no interest in learning French.

So that first realisation already broke my heart because Jean was basically ripped out from a part of his culture.

And then I realised Jean is the one who taught French to Kevin. So everything Kevin knows about French culture is coming from Jean. After leaving the nest, French and anything related to it probably became a way to stay linked to Jean in some kind of way.

So now I imagined Kevin searching everywhere to find stuff in French, officially to keep up with the language, but in reality, it's because he misses Jean. And Kevin finds out about Stéphane Bern's show called "Secrets d'Histoire" (History's secrets) and becoming a fan of it because he is a history nerd. One day, he will learn that Stéphane Bern is way and happily married, and it will make him happy without knowing why. Because Kevin Day, you are not straight.

And now I can't help but think about everything regarding French culture Jean and Kevin missed because of Riko. I NEED A DRUNK KEVIN SINGING "L'assasymphonie" ON THE TOP OF HIS LUNG AND JEAN AND NEIL TRYING TO EXPLAIN TO THE FOXES WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENNED. AND I WANT THIS EVENT TO HAPPEN SO OFTEN THAT NICKY PROCEEDS TO JOIN KEVIN IN HIS SINGING.

Kevin Day Appreciation Post

Okay, okay, so I realised something about Kevin Day a while back and needed to get it out. (TW; mentions of the Nest, Nest's teaching methods, Tetsuji Moriyama, Riko Moriyama, child abuse)

Kevin is not appreciated enough by the fandom or the foxes? Like, he is a fricking genius, probably the best player- no def the best exy player to ever exist.

He is beaten and his hand is broken so badly by Riko, who he saw as his brother for years and he still manages to relearn how to play with his other hand before once again picking up the racquet with his healed hand. He wins against Riko in that state- and imagine how good he must just have been before that, if he can win against Riko in that state.

He fears Tetsuji Moriyama to the point that he can't say no, if the man ever asked him to come back. Kevin fears him to that degree- he has been abused by him and Riko in the past for a such a long time that he is afraid of saying no. When Neil coms back, he says that he knows that it must have been worse for Neil, but that he can still talk to him if he ever needed to.

Kevin, who is literally allergic to human interactions tells Neil that he can always talk to him.

Kevin, who knows who Neil is, doesn't tell Andrew a thing- and when he realizes that Neil won't make it he still tells him that he will train with him every single night.

"You will be court." becomes "You should have been court." so so quickly.

Kevin, who believed in Neil before all of the others, continues to go to the court with him every single night.

Kevin contacts Jeremy, and asks him to take Jean and let him join the Trojans. he isn't scared for himself when he tells Neil that he should run, or to Jean that he should go back- no, I think that he is scared of what might end up happening to them in the long run.

I wonder, if he was ever planning on telling Coach that he was his son, because he only does when Neil makes him to do so. Just imagine, your coach (-who also happens to be your father who doesn't know that he is your father yet) sitting in front of you and literally threatening your contract. Maybe Wymack was exaggerating, maybe he was just saying things, but did Kevin know this? Is Kevin ever really gonna be able to see Wymack as his father and not his coach?

Tetsuji makes Neil kneel in front of him- did he ever make Kevin kneel? Did Kevin have a messed up mindset of how teams and their coaches were supposed to be and was so confused by the foxes and their behavior? Did he ever kneel in front of Wymack? Did he ever think that Wymack was going to hit him? Did he ever cower away from Dan?

Did he ever panic to the point of passing out after being left alone in a room for a long time because they were supposed to be in pairs, because he had thought that he had missed practice? that RIko had left him? that he had to get up but it hurt so much?

Why did he gain an alcohol addiction in the first place?

Gosh, just, my heart goes to both of the raven boys along with Neil and I can't explain how much it hurts to even think of these things.

I really hate Kayleigh Day, probably almost as much as I hate Tilda Minyard and Mary Hatford (but not as much as I hate Luther and Nathan- oh my god.)

Stephanie Walker, Randy Boyd, David Wymack, Cass Spear, Abby Winfield and Betsy Dobson- we don't need any other adults to intrude in the lives of our Foxes. (Oh, and also probably Stuart)

Hello! I am very late because I unfortunately did not have the time to read chapter 11 when you uploaded it so my bad for coming to you with tears and screaming about feelings a week later (just as you uploaded a new chapter which i also have feelings about): you broke my heart! MY HEART GOT SHATTERED! I loved the beginning of it that showed Brian taking care of Justin and being around him (god i wish we got more of that in s2) but my heart still broke for both of them. Justin bring in pain and frustrated and Brian just being lost while trying his best. “He pours every unspoken word from that parking garage into the impossible task of managing every detail of Justin’s treatment” oh how about you just stab me in the heart and get over it? I legit wanted to cry while reading this chapter. Btw also my jaw dropped and so did my heart when Mikey called Brian a whore at comicon, i literally threw my phone on the bed and walked away. I was ready to fight him all while hugging Brian (you know what Kevin heart meme where a woman is holding him like a kid, basically me) NOW, here comes the real heartbreak. The night alone. I wanted to fucking cry when reading the rest of the chapter. “…across the dark loft and in the quiet of the night that makes bravery possible, that it had also been the best night of his life” vs “But a bat did slice through the air of that best night and took it all away.” MY HEART! I genuinely gasped at that part because poor Brian and obviously Justin but in this case Brian finally felt something and it was stolen and i am having an entire crisis over it. The only thing I did love (by THAT i mean as in like “yessss!!!!!” Type of moment, because trust me i LOVED every single word in this chapter even if did slice me in half when i read it) was when Ted recommended Brian marketing and more education. Like yes baby!! You were made for that!!! But also the ending with Mikey and Brian? It was very much needed and expected obviously but you did it very well. It obviously kills Brian because of his promises but im so happy that they finally let him walk away. And the ending with Emmett? Gosh, i am a slut for Kinneycutt so thank you for delivering them from the beginning but especially in this little moment. And obviously the ending once again HURT. “The days turn dark and cloudy after Justin leaves. // this is just another gloomy winter in Pittsburgh. That the sun will shine again.” MY HEART IS GONE! Cant even describe the moment when I read this paragraph because it was a mix between jaw on the floor and a sobbing mess. Anyway sorry for this extremely long blabbering message.

Hello dear sweet anon!

You NEVER have to apologize for coming to my asks at any point to talk about a fic! It could be the minute I post or years later… I can pretty confidently tell you that this is true for any other fic writer ever.

It physically hurt me to write what Mikey said to Brian. But also it feels canonically accurate (301! 301!) even though I didn’t have Brian punch him for this (because Brian would only punch Mikey to defend Justin not to defend himself).

Brian having those memories alone is the most heartbreaking part of S2 for me. I am so glad I was able to capture that heartbreak in this chapter for you. (And sorry because Feelings but also happy).

Kinneycutt my beloved! I’m so glad you love them as much as I do. Underrated duo (although I think the tumblr fandom has appropriate appreciation for them).

Sorry not sorry that I love that you sobbed and that the chapter “sliced you in half.” I am 100% here to make people Feel Things With My Words and this message has brought immense joy to my day/week/month/year.

This morning I was singing We don’t talk about Bruno from Encanto, and then I was like imagine if the song was sing by all far the game characters.

And so i was like giving the part to the characters and obviusly the song is gonna talk about Andrew as they present him to the freshman.

So ready for my we don’t talk about Andrew.

Frist of all Nicky is ganna sing the part of Pepa(I mean I even think that the power are super fitting for Nicky) and Erik the part of Felix cause I think is fitting and they are both super cute couples.

And than the part of Dolores is obviusly Aaron because that make sense on my mind and he is super quite and the part were she is complaining about the fact that he said that she can’t stay whit the one she love is obviusly Andrew being protective whit Aaron and Aaron complaining about it.

And obviously Neil is Camilo because who can say that our love 5’0’’ feet Andrew is 7’0’’ feet if not our drama queen Neil Josten and also they are both super sarcastic and i love them.

And than i had the clear immagine of Kevin singing the part of Isabella when she is like “he told me that the like of my dream would be promised me and some day be mine” and I was loosing my shit, and i don’t know this was just so beautiful.

Also Allison being the one with the dead fish, and Matt the one without hair. I’m still confused about the one with the gout so I accept suggestions .

Sorry for this but it was stuck in my head all day and I have to say this to someone and I don't know anybody who has read this books so here I'm.

This tag game has unexpectedly led to an interesting discussion about what exactly an “Endgame Ship” means... which seems to be largely open to interpretation. I’m still not sure how I see that term, but for the purposes of this post, but to narrow it down and not mention way too many ships, I’ll take Endgame in two different meanings: for “Favorite Ship(s) That’s Endgame”, I’ll take it to mean pairings that were together and in a happy relationship at the end of the story. But for “Ship(s) You Wish Had Been Endgame”, I will take “Not Endgame” to mean that the ship was not treated as these characters’ main romance at the end of the show, or at least there was a lot of ambiguity and/or a rival ship for one or both characters was instead the current one at the end of the story. (A lot of my favorite ships have the tendency to end up unhappily in spite of being portrayed as the main romance of the story..)

Warning: this post contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Agents of SHIELD, The Hunger Games, The Leftovers, The Americans and The 100 (though if you’ve spent any time on my blog, you’ve certainly already been spoiled for the ending of The 100) and .

1. First Ship - When I was about 4 or 5, I was obsessed with Lady and the Tramp (I had a book version with a few pictures and it fell apart from how much I was reading it - it may have been my first book that wasn’t mostly a picture book), so I guess my first ship was two dogs (which is really appropriate, since I love dogs). If we’re talking TV, again going back to my childhood, before puberty and before I even knew what “shipping” was, I remember being pleasantly surprised when Raquel first appeared on Only Fools and Horses as a love interest for Del Boy - the show was an episodic comedy where the two brothers, in the early years, usually didn’t have a serious love interest. I thought “oh, he really is in love with her! And she feels the same, and they are so cute together.” I hoped she’d come back and wouldn’t just be a one episode character but a long-term LI. And then I was so happy when that very much did happen. I guess this can be considered the start of my TV shipping (and also an early sign of my love for contuinity and longer arcs on TV).

2. First OTP - Ignoring pre-puberty: at the age of 12, I was really obsessed with Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff and Cathy and read the book who knows how mny times. Regarding TV, I’ve shipped over the years, but I guess the first TV ship I would really call my OTP was in This Life, a 1990s UK drama about a bunch of 20-somethings in London, which I watched on TV in 2001. which now sadly seems almost forgotten. Anna and Miles had an on-off, love-hate relationship throughout - they were sexy, snarky, and it was painfully obvious that they were in love, but these idiots had trouble admitting it to themselves and even more to each other. If it had been a romcom, they would’ve been certain to end up together, but it was a realistic drama.

3. Current Favorite Ship - Bellarke - oh, what an OTP of all OTPs that was before it was stupidly destroyed out of spite. Over the last couple of years, Dark (season 3 mostly) made me really love Jonas and Martha (the first pairing I’ve made gifsets about), and most recently (last month!), I binged Halt and Catch Fire and fell in love with the show and with Joe and Cameron’s relationship (which, I just realized now, shows that my taste in OTPs hasn’t changed in 20 years).

If we’re talking current as in, in current shows rather than finished ones, then Kanej (Shadow and Bone), Harlivy (Harley Quinn), Gereon and Charlotte (Babylon Berlin) and Roy and Keeley (Ted Lasso).

4. Your ship since the first minute - I really rarely ship anything from the first minute (unless we’re talking Morticia and Gomez, who are of course already a perfect couple and nothing ever changes there). It usually takes time for me to fall for a ship. A rare exception is Roy and Keeley - their first one-on-one scene in S1 already had huge OTP vibes.

5. Ship(s) You Wish Had Been Endgame - Do I even have to say it? BELLARKE. A hundred times Bellarke, who were portrayed as endgame before the showrunner decided to retcon and ruin them together with the show overall.

Others: Jessica and Luke in Netfix Narvel shows, May and Andrew on AoS, Willow and Oz; or, depending on how you interpret Endgame, Willow/Tara (some argue that it is Endgame as Tara is definitely portrayed as the love of Willow’s life regardless of everything else). Spuffy (again, there are different opinions as to its status as both the show and the comics ended ambiguously and tried not to have a clear Endgame pairing for Buffy’s character), Xander/Anya (if you take comics into account).

6. Ship You Wish Was Canon - Some would say Bellarke, again, but I tend to consider it canon. It’s debatable, for sure (if you only consider making out/sex and/or “I love you” as markers of canon, it is not canon; if it is enough for the show to make it so blatant in the first 6 seasons that you have to actively search for ways to deny it to make it sound platonic, and for actors to confirm it was portrayed as romantic- than it is.)

So my answer would be: Kastle (Netflix Marvel shows), QuakeRider (AoS), and Octavia and Diyoza (The 100) and maybe Faith and Buffy (mostly in the sense that canon could have explored the nature of Faith’s feelings for Buffy a bit more and a bit more openly).

7. Ship that Most of the Fandom Hates, but You Love - Angel and Darla, May and Andrew, Coulson and Rosalind (hated how it ended though). Miller and Bryan (because they were more interesting than Mackson, and Bryan had a personality), Though “ships that most of the fandom ignores” would be a more apt term. The one that most of the fandom does hate and I like it is Octavia/Ilian - I liked it for what it was, two damaged people finding comfort together in what could have grown into something more - instead of the “we’re ve just met and talked to each other once and we’re already IN LOVE!” trope that the writers of The 100 were so fond of.

8. You Don’t Even Watch the Show, but You Ship It - Why would I ship something from a show I don’t watch?

9. Ship That You Wish Had A Different Storyline - BELLARKE (duh - the ending). Veronica and Logan (the ending, again). Coulson/Rosalind - they had such an interesting and fun dynamic that could have been explored much more; instead, the writers opted for one of the worst tropes there are, and I hated that entire plotline for so many reasons. Tyrol and Boomer on Battlestar Galactica - what they did with Boomer was crap. Baltar and Caprica - all the bad writing in season 4. This is a weird example of a ship that I shipped so hard for 3 seasons and that was given Endgame in every sense of the word, but, by that point, I barely cared anymore, because the writers forgot about their relationship throughout the final season and made it seem like they didn’t even remember each other, and then slapped a last minute happy ending. Plus they retconed/explained their connection in such a stupid and anticlimactic way that ruined it retroactively.

10. Favorite Ship(s) That’s Endgame - Everlark, Nora and Kevin (The Leftovers), Philip and Elizabeth (The Americans), and Josh and Della on Night and Day (a really obscure early 2000s UK show that was watched by maybe 100 people.) Some others worth mentioning: FitzSimmons, Niles and Daphne, Tim and Dawn (original UK The Office), Jake and Amy, Memori (the only bright spot in a rubbish ending). And of course, there’s Morticia and Gomez, though they are less Endgame and more AlwaysGame.

Izzy Stradlin & Johnny Thunders: An essay in the making lol

Okay, time for the conspiracy theories over here. Nah, just kidding but let's talk about the connections between Izzy Stradlin and Johnny Thunders. Here's my take:

I'm currently reading "Too Much Too Soon", the authorized biography of the New York Dolls by British journalist Nina Antonia, who was also close friends with Johnny. The thing is that I can't help but find a lot of similarities between Izzy and Johnny (of course, taking into consideration how much of an influence was Thunders in Izzy's life, not only on a musical level).

So, let's start analyzing some facts about Johnny's life and observations from the people who knew him. First, he didn't grow up with his dad, since the latter split when Johnny was just a baby and he was raised by his mom and his older sister.

From an early age, he developed an interest in fashion, rock music, and especially, in Keith Richards. So much, that he dyed his hair jet black and asked his sister to cut his hair in the same style as Keith’s. During his teenage years, Johnny made a reputation as a regular on the NY music scene of the late 60s and was praised for his unique appearance. He didn’t look like any of his peers and people often wondered where he got such rare and incredibly interesting pieces of clothing since they couldn’t be found at any of the local thrift shops. Turns out, he bought his clothes at the women’s department and customized them with the help of his mom and sister.

In terms of his personality, people described him as a quiet, shy, and reserved guy, except when he was on stage and you could see him jumping around and living his best life. Also, he started dabbling in drugs pretty much since puberty, beginning with pot, and then experimenting with LSD, quaaludes, coke, meth, etc., until getting to the ultimate killer: heroin.

Also, alongside with frontman of the NYD, David Johansen, Johnny was responsible for writing the most important songs of the band, as well as being praised as a songrwriter. Same as Keith Richards, he was keen on simple and precise compositions and focused mostly on bluesy sounds and nods to old school rock n’ roll with heavy influences from the greats Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc.

Got all that? Okay, now let’s go with our Indiana boy.

At this point we have pretty much nailed down Izzy’s background and biography, right? We know that he was raised by his mom and his grandma Elizabeth back there in Lafayette. He has two younger brothers, Kevin and Joe. His dad split and left for Florida where he remarried and had two other kids.

Same thing, from a very early age he became interested in music, mainly thanks to his grandma, who was a drummer on a local jazz band. He was also greatly impacted by Don Kirschner’s tv show where lots of the most important musical acts from the 70s made appearances. He definitely saw the Dolls there and they became one of his favorites.

We still don’t know many details about his life as a teenager in boring Lafayette, except the little that he, Axl, or other close sources have shared. Izzy started smoking cigarettes and pot, firecrackers, and the usual soft drugs that all of us have taken during high school years at one time or another. We know that he liked skating, playing drums, and drawing, among other stuff.

Things start to get interesting when he gets to Los Angeles. Being Keith & Johnny MAJOR influences on him, he dyed his hair jet black and styled it the same way as Johnny in the early 70s. Long, straight, and looking like raven feathers. So, if you are a hardcore fan of the NYD and one afternoon you casually bump into Izzy down the Sunset Blvd in 1980, you’d highly lose your shit and think you’re seeing Johhny Thunders himself in front of you.

Also, like Johnny, Izzy didn’t start playing guitar. He was a drummer, then a bass player, and finally a guitarist. The difference in Johnny’s case is that he first played bass and then switched to guitar.

Now, concerning clothing, Izzy also brought attention for his curious looks, being one of the first people in Hollywood to wear creepers (according to Hollywood Rose founder and close friends with Izzy, Chris Weber). Same thing happened in New York to Johnny when he decided to subvert the local style by wearing chunky shoes and platforms. Not saying that he was the creator of the look (neither was Izzy), but they certainly inspired some people to do the same and express themselves through fashion. Izzy also used to customize his clothes, DIY some of them, make jewelry, thrift flips, etc.

On top of that, as a little tribute to his idol Johnny, Izzy embraced the color pink by wearing it in jackets that he spray-painted, socks, shirts, etc. Mix that with his ivory skin, dark hair, and facial features and you have another Mr. Thunders right there (And they DO look like they’re related... as well as Keith, Ronnie Wood, Sami Yaffa, Nasty Suicide, Tracii Guns, etc. On the fandom we call that breed of rockstar: “Emo Rat Boy” lol).

Another thing is that Izzy’s drug of choice was smack and as it also eventually happened to Johnny, it made him all doom and gloom, moody, and vanished the once happy and joyous spirit, both on stage and in real life.

Even in the dynamic between Axl and Izzy, you can see the same chemistry and looks of Johnny and David Johansen back in the day. Even the essence of the New York Dolls as a whole is visible during the formation days of GNR. Just look at Arthur Kane and Duff McKagan, and this is just a little example.

To finish this, around 1990-1991, Izzy is seen playing the same guitar model that Johnny is most known for, Gibson Les Paul Junior in yellow. And in the late 90s-early 2000s (I’m not exactly sure when) he made a cover of “Do You Love Me?”, really, but really inspired by Thunders.

Last Names Merlin Might Have in the Modern Day That Aren’t “Emrys”

Aldor—from Ealdor, derived from when he used to call himself ‘Merlin of/from Ealdor.’

Sarcer/Corser/Sawyer—Some butchering of ‘Sorcerer,’ derived from a time when magic was legal + accepted and Merlin was known as “Merlin the sorcerer.” Like how there were a lot of blacksmiths all called Smith.

Camlett/Kamlot/etc.—Same principle as Aldor/Ealdor: he ended up living so long in Camelot that he started introducing himself as ‘Merlin of/from Camelot’ or possibly he just became known by that name by other people.

Merlin—he takes a more common first name like Kevin and signed up for some official papers with Merlin as his last name. It was less weird as a last name than a first. Alternatively, someone in like, the Victorian era, asked what his name was and he said "Merlin," and they assumed that was his last name because everyone in the Victorian era addressed each other by their last names upon meeting.

Arthur keeps Merlin around from the start because hes like, wow this funky little dude has no manners whatsoever and woooooooo the Audacity of him. And hes amused because he's like, okay so my father might have assigned me the literal worst servant ever but also this is fucking hilarious like how many times is this literal servant going to call me a Prat? i dunno i wanna count. If it gets annoying i'll just fire him or something but like honest i'm very invested in How Far He Will go like literally this is so novel nothing has ever happened to me like this? And then later he's like, actually im Endeared by Merlin now so theres no way i can get rid of him. He's my idiot servant no you can't have him, hes one of a kind because he insults me and i think that's neat. And also there's like kind of this element i think there Arthur is like, I can Trust Merlin. Other servants are all formal and pleasant, and he's drawn to Merlin the same way he is to Gwen once Gwen like, goes off on him about being rude. I feel like Arthur has spent his whole life surrounded by people who won't tell him the truth because it's all Protocol and Manners For The Prince and to have someone who just insults him to his face like, yeah he's insulted, but he also feels like he's getting the Truth from Merlin and therefore can trust him more than like, any other servant who could be hiding contempt or evil behind their practiced pleasantries. He feels like he knows Merlin and therefore can trust him, because if Merlin is so stupid as to just insult him all the time and steal food, there's no way Merlin is hiding anything from him, right? And when he says "good servants are hard to come by," I think he mainly means servants he could trust with his life and shit. And Merlin fits that bill because Merlin is so candid. Do you think that the Russo brothers got a little cocky and lazy with writing while making Infinity Wars/Endgame, similarly to Dumb & Dumber when making S8 of Game of Thrones? I kind of got the impression that they just wanted to be over it and didnt put much coherent story arcs because they know a lot of ppl will watch anyways. Winter Soldier was one of the best MCU movies, Civil War was good, too, but it's frustrating that the things that were left unresolved were barely mentioned in IF/EG.

I think cocky and lazy are very poor words to describe The Russo Brother’s situation.

Dumb & Dumber were connected to a TV show that ran for 8 years, and if they didn’t wrap it up, they, and the actors, would continue to be committed to for anywhere between 2 and 6 more years. They were connected to the show for as long as if was still airing and needed to get out.

The Russo Brothers are in an entirely different situation. Chances are they made some deal with Marvel to be committed to Winter Solider and Civil War. You have to remember that before Winter Solider, they were directing TV episodes. This was really their first big budget film. They’re young and ready for their chance to prove themselves.

So, my guess is when everything with Joss Whedon went down the studio heads looked at each other and were like, “okay, who do we have on staff to fill in”. The Russos wrapped up Civil War, which is kind of Avengers 2.5 and Kevin Feige was probably like, “these guys know how to balance out a ensemble cast, let’s just use them”. And I can only imagine the Russos jumped at the opportunity.

Infinity War and Endgame isn’t a story of lazy arrogance. It’s a story of two directors with a lot of studio notes finding themselves way over their head.

Winter Solider and Civil War, are much more grounded stories then either Infinity War and Endgame. They’re espionage/spy thrillers. Infinity War and Endgame are pure comic book fun. You need to embrace the absurd, otherwise it doesn’t work. And the Russos just don’t know how.

There is a reason Wanda and Vision are benched in Civil War and Thor doesn’t even show up. Just like there is a reason it takes until the climax for Thor to join the battle in Infinity War and why Carol doesn’t show up until the end of Endgame. They just don’t know how to write over powered characters, which is what comics are full of.

As for all the dropped character threads...let’s go through the main Avengers since it’s really their stories ending in Endgame, the rest will be picked up in later movies:

Bruce Banner: Admittedly nobody knows what to do with Bruce, so I’m going to give the Russo’s a pass on this one.

Tony Stark: Honestly got the best deal out of this. Tony had to die, it was inevitable. He gets the best send off. He’s had the strongest character voice out of everyone thanks to RDJ. They literally could not screw this one up, and they didn’t.

Clint Barton: Every decision about Clint has been bad since day one. Again, I’m not blaming the Russos for this one. Everyone at Marvel is at fault.

Natasha Romanoff: I’m pissed off they killed Natasha the way they did. I really am, but I feel like it’s the principal of the matter, rather than injustice for the character.

Natasha is another character that never had consistent writing. I think her best characterization was in Winter Solider, but there honestly wasn’t much to her. She was just kinda...strong with a vague sense that she’s trying to make up for past crimes. So, having her die for a greater purpose kinda makes sense. But we never really saw what those past crimes were. Now, if they decided to give her the dumb assassins story for the 5 years in between, reverting back to her old ways whenever thing falls apart, it might have worked. But, as it stands, we have a character death that doesn’t really mean anything to her non-arc or to anyone else.

Steve Rogers: Now, Steve is tricky because you’ve got a lot of studio notes coming in. At the end of the movie, Steve needs to pass on the torch of Captain America to somebody else because Chris Evan’s contract is up and has made a point to say he won’t even to returning for a cameo.

So, you the Russo Brothers are stuck in a predicament. You don’t want to kill Steve, because you just spent the last two films directing him as your main character. He’s your baby and you don’t want to see him die. Besides, you already have to kill Tony and Natasha is on the chopping block because Scarlett Johansson’s contract is up too. The only reason it was extended was for one solitary stand alone movie.

So, you have to come up with a reason for him to still be alive at the end of the movie, without any chance of him taking up the mantle of Captain America again, while still giving him the happy ending you feel like he deserves. And then it hits you, time travel. This story is about time travel. Of course! Have him go back in time and be with Peggy.

You spent a lot of time in Winter Solider on the fact that Steve has never gotten over Peggy. You drove home the fact that he never gives up. And he and Bucky’s relationship isn’t so much about helping his friend as holding on the the bit of his past still alive and well, not old and dying.

A lot of fanon has been thrown Steve’s way in the fandom, but when you look at the canontical facts of the movies he’s in; Steve has never moved on from the past, and the narrative never asks him to.

Steve going back in time to be with Peggy and have his happy ending is exactly in keeping with the character the Russo’s wrote back in Winter Solider.

You don’t have to like it. I certainly don’t. But, it’s not a departure or sign of laziness. It’s two creators who love their character and want to give him the happiness they feel like he deserves.

Thor: This is the only character where I truly leave it up to incompetence. The Russos just do not know how to write Thor. The only creator who knew how to write Thor is Taika Waititi. Let him be or lord and savior and give us another soft reboot in Thor: Loving Thunder. Amen.

Seriously, I have waaaaaay too much to say about Thor, so let’s leave that rant for another day.

In conclusion: The Russo Brothers aren’t a couple of arrogant jackasses that bought into their own hype and were desperate to leave the show to move on the better things they sure were coming their way. What they were are a couple of relatively inexperienced filmmakers asked to conclude a franchise ten years in the making without full understanding of all of the source material and a pile of studio notes based on contracts and future story-lines well beyond their control.

And this is why comics are best adapted in TV shows.

i hate to bring up 1.03 but i have something to say about it. there’s a certain group of people that make up things about 1.03 to fit there ugly ass “chuck is rapist” narrative. so let’s do a recap since y’all seem to forget that he did not physical harm anyone:

chuck asked veronica on a date. she agrees, she’s actually looking forward to it.

betty warns her against going out with him because he’s a “player,” but kevin is supportive because dating chuck is like “dating a kennedy”

she goes on the date which we see the end portion of

we see them laughing, taking a selfie then they kiss (which both parties seem to enjoy)

the following school day, she’s asked about the date and she says it was alright but not intellectually stimulating

then tina asks how her “how was the sticky maple chuck gave [her]?” to which she is confused because unbeknownst to her chuck made a post slut shaming her

when she sees the post she is rightfully angry and storms into the locker room with betty close behind

then we see the full dark no stars line

she confronts chuck and demands he takes the post down, to which he laughs her out of the locker room with the rest of the team (excluding archie and i believe reggie)

betty does a mini investigation where she finds other girls with similar stories.

also we hear that ethel’s story. she helped chuck with a math problem then the next day people are saying they did something sexual (which is a lie obvi)

cheryl walks in and tries to discredit her

betty also finds out that it’s chuck and five other guys playing some kind of game that they keep score for in the “playbook”

they say they need proof because weatherbee doesn’t believe them

betty goes on a “date” with trev to get more info

they break into the school after hours and find the book. cheryl finds out her brother isn’t who she though and betty finds out that polly is in the book

betty suddenly starts to want actual revenge instead of just writing an expose because she wants to avenge her sister (understandable because i would want the same)

she says she has a plan

she puts on a “sexy” outfit and goes to pop’s to seduce chuck. she succeeds because he agrees to meet her at ethel’s

then we see him go to pool where he finds veronica and not betty. then betty walks in in the ugliest wig i have ever had the displeasure of seeing

then we see betty drugging his drink so he’ll confess

veronica starts recording and the plan is in motion. betty tells him to start talking or she’ll boil him alive and he does but it’s not what she was looking for. betty then puts her stiletto on his head and starts pushing him into the water until he finally confesses.

she blacks out and that’s not good enough for her. she also give him a “sticky maple.” at this point veronica is scared and the scene is pretty much over.

betty stays up all night and writes her expose and chuck gets kicked off the team.

when veronica asked betty what happened, she brushes it off

then we see the hallway shot that everyone gifs

so now that the recap is over. can you please point to the part where he “r*apes” or “molests” any of those girls? what he did was disgusting and inexcusable, but it came nowhere close to what everyone is always accusing him of. he was nothing but a gross high school asshole. one that we probably all have met at some point. he was a lying asshole who deserved some sort of consequences but the hot tub scene was too far. it was not feminism.

also the fact that he hasn’t been the villain since season 1 and y’all still can’t move on and paint the actual in canon rapist as the rapist in y’all ugly ass fanfics is so sad. “chuck is a bad guy” is a weak ass, unsubstantiated narrative that needs to stop. he was literally redeemed in season 2 and we see veronica forgive him. so if y’all could kindly shut the fuck up and keep his name out y’all posts and fan fics! he’s no even on the fucking show anymore! y’all need to put this energy towards the in canon rapist, nick st. claire, who continues to be an unredempable piece of shit and acknowledged a a bad guy in canon!

My Reaction To The Supernatural Series Finale.

Warning this is not going to be spoiler free. This is your only warning.

This is also your warning that this is kinda brutal. I love Supernatural but the Series Finale was not it. I really don’t want to accept it as canon.

This is also my opinion. It is ONLY my opinion on the series finale.

I may write my version of what I think should of happened and I’ll post it on here if I do:

I was going to write this tomorrow, however I can’t stop thinking about what happened and I’ll be honest, I have a lot of problems with it and I’ll be addressing the good and the bad in the episode. You don’t have to agree with me, this is just my opinion. I’ll be honest, I was hoping for one more “Bitch, Jerk,” and for them to at the very least talk about Cas’s love confession to Dean. (I never truly shipped it however, I know it's there and have noticed the sexual tension.) I’ll also provide a link at the end providing some examples of that sexual tension. This won’t be in the order of the episode, just forewarning you.

The first thing I had a big issue with was Dean getting killed because the monster of the week impaled him on a rusty nail. I personally don’t think Dean would be that stupid to let that happen. And you are going to tell me the man that spent 40 years in hell, escaped Purgatory, killed Hitler, killed Death TWICE, slaughtered the Styne family for murdering Charlie, the man that is the Michael sword, practically raised Sam (with the help of Bobby), is going to die because of a monster of the week. Do I understand why he had to die? Yes, I do. I don’t believe Dean would be able to physically stop hunting because that’s what he was raised to do and that’s what his mind set has almost always been because it’s always been, protect Sammy and then “Saving People, Hunting Things, The Family Business.” And honestly Dean death kinda had Tony Stark’s death vibes.

Then there was basically not having anything to do with Cas at all, then what they mentioned him twice? Cas went into the Empty to save Dean from Billy so that he could save the world, confessing his love to him. As I mentioned in my introduction, I never really shipped it but I’m not blind to the sexual tension either. Dean and Cas should’ve had their happy ending instead of the bury your gays trope. Sam and Dean can always find a way and when Dean goes to heaven, Bobby was telling him about everything Jack did and Dean says, “So Jack did all that?” Then Bobby replies, “Well, Cas helped.” So what I am wondering is where is Cas? Is Cas alive and with Jack showing him the way of God when he should be with Dean or am I just looking too much into it?

Sam’s life. I know what you’re thinking but that’s what he’s always wanted! Remember this is the good and the bad. Yes, they finally fulfilled the promise. If one days the other has to go on to live an apple pie life and he finally did, I have no issue with that but with their history and they way Dean died, I don’t think Sam could’ve settled down until knowing that there was no way for Dean to come back, especially with their track record. Then I have questions about his life. Who did he marry? I may be wrong but when he and his son were playing catch in the backyard it didn’t look like Eileen to me, she has darker hair than that. Can we also talk about the old man Sam sitting in the Impala, my mom and I thought he was going to die right there, we were kinda freaking out about it. And After further thought, unless Sam uses a fake name for the rest of his life, there is no way he could’ve settled down. Let me explain. Legally he, Samuel Winchester, is dead and if the government found out he wasn’t dead he would be arrested. So he would have to be on the run for the rest of his life.

Then there were three other things that I didn’t like in the episode. First, to me it felt like they closed it off, like that there was no chance for them to come back for a reunion, or a movie like they talked about in the past. Second, The only old character we got to see was the Original Bobby, I’m not complaining, I love Bobby to death but I wish that we got to see more of the previous characters that had been on the show and not some random victim from season one that got transformed into a vampire. I’m talking about characters that made a difference, like Kevin, CASTIEL. I get that they had to limit casting because of COVID, I really do but it was kind painful to watch. Third and foremost, John and Mary ending up in heaven. I have issues with John Winchester, I don’t have as many issues with Mary as I do John but I still have issues with them both. Let’s start with John Winchester, I’m going to start with a simple one, abandoning his kids in motel rooms, expecting Dean to raise Sam, which he did (with the help of Bobby). Adam, and the way he treated him differently compared to the boys, need I say more. I could go on a rant on why I don’t like John Winchester and we’d be here all day but now it’s Mary’s turn. The moment Mary gets raised from the dead, instead of spending time with her sons she runs off.

The few things I did like about the finale were small things but some things I did still like. I loved that Dean ended up keeping the dog and forming a bond with them. When Sam smashed pie in Dean’s face and the old guy in the background died laughing, I loved that. Jack opening up heaven so everything is connected, seeing the Original Bobby again, THE ROADHOUSE.

I know, I have more issues with it than anything but please remember this is my opinion, you don’t have to agree with it and this was also written at like 2AM because I couldn’t sleep thinking about the finale so instead I wrote this… whatever this is. All I know is that if my High School English Teachers could see me know they’d be disappointed, maybe. Well, definitely because I didn’t put this much effort into any of my papers I gave them. I hope you enjoyed reading my thousand word essay on my reaction to the Series Finale.

Now for the Supernatural writers. I hate you, writers of Supernatural for the anticlimactic ending, I would’ve been happy with you leaving it at the last episode if I had known you were going to give us this trash of an ending but I also love you writers for giving me a show that was there for the worst times in my life.
