#toph headcanon
Note
any headcanons for toph and azula
Hmmm...let's see.
Azula: -She holds a bit of a grudge against Iroh both for getting Lu Ten killed and aggravating the grudge between her and Zuko. While she does respect Zuko's decision to trust him and she can be cordial with him, she doesn't have it in her to fully forgive Iroh. Iroh on his part does come to understand and accepts her decision, which Azula respects at least. -Basically disowns Ozai when she comes to terms with what he did to her. While she won't visit him in prison or anything, she makes it clear that she won't have anything to do with her father and is intent on cutting as many ties as possible. As far as she's concerned, he can rot in his cell. -Helped organized the Fire Warriors which dedicated themselves to fully apprehending and bringing to justice many war criminals that plagued the Earth Kingdom in the years following the end of the war. This was after she had realized just what the Fire Nation had truly done and figured this was her way of paying the world back for her actions during the war. While people are still wary around her, they do respect her efforts to atone. The Fire Warriors themselves become well-renowned peacekeepers that have ties to various government bodies well into the era of Korra. -Is one of the biggest critics of the Order of the White Lotus. To her, a secret organization dedicated to preserving a status quo that led to the war is self-defeating, and staunchly opposes their actions. While she refuses to launch into violence, she does what she can to stymy their actions and makes it clear that any attempt at further political games will not fly under her watch.
Toph: -Part of the reason she became the Republic City Chief of Police was that she could beat people up while getting paid for it. The other was that after seeing the myriad of problems the oldest colonies faced during the formation of Republic City, she realized that somebody needed to help keep peace in a mostly chaotic setting. While many have questioned why somebody with a track record of petty crimes and overall mischief would become a police chief, she contends that somebody needs to understand chaos if they are to properly maintain it. While beating people up and getting paid for it. -Takes a while to fully reconcile with her mother and father. Due to her accomplishments during the war and during peacekeeping, she did garner a bit of respect from her family...but a part of them takes a while to fully accept that their daughter is not as helpless as they imagined. Toph won't push the issue, but she does appreciate their attempts at reconciliation. -Was one of the biggest advocates for Azula turning a new leaf. Possibly seeing a lot of herself in the disgraced princess, Toph became one of the few Gaang members to become a good friend of Azula. She even aided the Fire Warriors in a number of raids on Fire Nation holdouts and war criminals. To this day the Republic City Police Department and the Fire Warriors have a strong alliance due to their predecessors well documented friendship. -Likes to watch productions by the Ember Island Players just to heckle and make fun of them. As far as she's concerned, they aren't bad if they provide at least some form of entertainment. Somehow, she managed to coerce Azula in watching some of the productions with her. What followed was a number of incidents where the two were heard giggling at each other's quips at bad acting and production values. The Ember Island Players refuse to comment.

Toph
Toph does not become a cop. After she helps end the war and develops a whole new earthbending technique, her parents can't deny her awesomeness anymore, so they reconcile, although Toph decides that her parents are easier to love at a distance. She builds a life separate from them, first staying near Zuko and Iroh in the Fire Nation, and then finding her own footing in the Earth Kingdom. She regains access to the family money in this time, and instead of wasting her time becoming the thing she hates, she becomes a defense attorney. She fights especially hard for those brought up on crimes of povery and rebellion against unjust systems. Because she's independently wealthy thanks to her parents and the spoils of war, she takes most cases pro-bono. Eventually, she starts her own firm which makes its own profit, but she herself still mostly does pro-bono work.

Things that definitely happened Post-War in ATLA a.k.a. assorted headcanons that really boil down to "wouldn't it be neat/funny if...":
Zuko fought an inordinate amount of Agni Kais, to the point that some of the junior officials ended up thinking that it's custom to fight the Fire Lord every once in a while. He was notable for both never losing, and never seriously injuring his opponent.
Aang and Katara helped with the reformation of Ba Sing Se. They became friends with Joo Dee. Katara helped her regain her own memories, and her own name. Some of the women formerly known as 'Joo Dee' formed a theatre troupe, which produced highly subversive counterculture plays. Their anti-authoritarian nonconformist plays became a huge cultural movement, though they did face a fair amount of criticism from the more traditional groups. Aang loved them, and the patronage of the Avatar definitely helped them grow. They also produced a play on the history of the Air Nomads, at the request of Aang. Aang, of course, helped write it.
Sokka once hit his thumb with a hammer. This led to the invention of the nail gun, powered by pressurized air. Aang spent over four days bending air into canisters and pressurizing them. The invention never saw widespread use. The day after it was complete, Sokka drove a nail through his thumb.
That one old guy who ratted out Haru for being an earthbender stubbed his toe every single day for the rest of his life.
Lieutenant Jee resigned his commission. He requested that Zuko accept his resignation in person, and Zuko was happy to oblige. The moment his resignation was official, he went on a 45-minute tirade attacking the Fire Lord, which was never written down in its' entirety, but was described as "extremely vulgar, even for a sailor" by attendees, and mostly had to do with their time on Zuko's ship.
Toph actually ended up having a great relationship with her mom after a long and harrowing process. She competed in a couple more Earth Rumbles, and her mother was in the audience, cheering. She never really got along with her father, after the whole "hire two guys to kidnap her by any means necessary"-thing.
Momo started several diplomatic incidents. Future historians would forever puzzled by the many mentions of this mysterious 'Momo' in official documents, with the theory that Momo was the Avatar's pet being dismissed by the leading historians. Clearly, Momo was some sort of rebel leader - perhaps a Water Tribe extremist?

Headcanon that the gaangs kids learn about Zuko’s misguided quest to capture the avatar and subsequently make a game out of it.
Bumi steals an air nomad necklace from his dad and whoever wears it becomes the “avatar” for the duration of the game. The “avatar” is given 100 seconds to hide.
When they “capture the avatar” the winner must shout “I have restored my honor!”
Zuko is mortified, everyone else thinks it’s endlessly hilarious.

Thinking abt the air nomads:
What if, after the war, once the dust has settled a little, Aang goes back to travelling, hoping that maybe he can find at least some trace of surviving airbenders. As an added bonus, he gets to do more of the exploring and wandering that he had to put on hold.
Toph goes with him ofc. She only just got a taste of real freedom and it was overshadowed by ever-present impending doom. While she's on speaking terms with her parents, she isnt quite ready to be back under their roof on a permanent basis. The rest of the gaang have their individual homes and responsibilities that they get back to, though they join for the odd field trip or adventure when they can.
So anyway, they're touring all over the world and over the years they notice just how displaced so many people have become. EK citizens who barely escaped the blaze but lost everything; FN military now decommissioned with no idea how to carry on; people looking for a new start in the hard-won peace. Maybe it starts with Toph heading back to Earth Rumble, where a group of young runaways scrounge for cheap fights to make a little money.
At each turn they find more and more people with no homes to return to and no family to protect them; runaways escaping the roles the war forced them into. Gradually, Aang and Toph start to see that they aren't so different from themselves. They just want a new start.
So they decide to give them one. They clean up the temples and set up villages in the surrounding areas (helps to be master earthbenders), where people can arrive and stay as long as they need. Travellers and refugees pass through in droves, sometimes choosing to stay and rebuild their lives there, sometimes continuing in their wandering with a guarantee that they'll always have a place to return to should they have the need.
Over time, the lemurs grow in number and even some flying bison calfs (hybrids with a relative species maybe?), can be seen in the skies. Whenever the founders visit, it isn't the same but Aang feels a little more at home.
The first time someone asks Aang to teach him his philosophies, and expresses his desire to become a monk, how can he refuse? Maybe it's a former soldier, somebody who's done terrible things, looking for a path to redemption. So Aang teaches him, and then he teaches others. And though they may not be airbenders, they are as earnest and faithful as any nun or monk Aang knew before. The temples become filled with new faces: Firebenders, Earthbenders, Waterbenders and non-benders all wearing Air nomad orange and yellow.
Aang always feared that it would be his responsibility to have airbender children, and the idea of forcing that on someone he loved terrified him. Maybe that's why he waited so long before acting on his feelings for his best friend, his travelling companion, his fellow-village builder and temple-restorer. How could they have a truly happy relationship with this pressure hanging over them? He wishes he could be content with the new way of things that he and his friends have created. But he knows that he can't be the last airbender forever...
Nobody knows why some children can bend the elements and others can't. Is it blood? Is it blessing? Is it the land in which you're born? Or is it the simple allocation of fates decided by the values and norms you're raised believing in? Is it enough to be surrounded by the culture and beliefs of the Air Nomads? Nobody knows...
All they know is that nobody sees it coming when the six-year-old daughter of two non-bender villagers from the Earth Kingdom and Northern Water Tribe sends herself flying twelve feet into the air with a sneeze.

She’s ensuring that you don’t have to face your fears alone
In the morning, Katara would encourage you to engage in self-care activities that help you feel grounded and at peace after experiencing a nightmare
Throughout the day, Katara would check in on you to see how you’re feeling and offer continued support and encouragement
“I know it can be scary, but nightmares aren’t real. You’re strong enough to overcome them. I’m here for you. You don’t have to face this alone.”
Toph
Tumblr media
Toph’s first instinct might be to offer some tough love
Like telling you to toughen up and not let the nightmare get to you
Toph might offer practical advice
Suggesting techniques like grounding exercises or focusing on your breathing to calm down
Despite her tough exterior, Toph is fiercely protective of her friends
She might offer to stay with you until you fall asleep again, ensuring you feel safe
Toph is known for her blunt honesty
So she might reassure you that nightmares are just tricks of the mind and not something to be afraid of
Toph might suggest distracting activities to take your mind off the nightmare
Like practicing bending moves or sharing stories of past adventures
Toph might share her own experiences with nightmares
Just letting you know that you’re not alone and that everyone struggles with bad dreams sometimes
Toph often uses humor to lighten the mood
So she might crack a joke or make a sarcastic comment to help you feel better
Despite her tough exterior, Toph can also be surprisingly gentle when it comes to comforting others
She might offer a reassuring pat on the back or a comforting hug if you are open to it
Toph might use her unique perspective as someone who has faced her own challenges to empathize with you and offer understanding and support
Toph’s approach to comforting you might be more straightforward and direct, reflecting her no-nonsense attitude
“Quit your whining. It’s just a stupid dream. Focus on something real. Like the feel of the ground beneath your feet.”

Headcanon - Lin knows that Suyin’s dad and her mom loved each other and, because of that, she grew up with the mentality that she was a mistake and Suyin was the baby Toph wanted. After Suyin scars her and Toph rips up the report, Lin accuses Toph of loving Suyin more because she’s the daughter of someone Toph actually loved.

What is your NUMBER ONE headcannon for each person in the Gaang (Katara, Zuko, Aang, Toph, Sokka, Suki [and Appa and Momo if you feel so inclined])
Katara: After the war, she goes back to the NWT to train with Yugoda and becomes a master healer as well as a master of the NWT fighting style. From there, she goes back to the Foggy Swamp Tribe and masters their bending style, too. With the help of Sokka, Zuko, and (in some headcanons) Hama, she also rediscovers SWT waterbending and not only masters it, but teaches it to the new benders in the SWT. By the time she leaves the SWT, there has been a school established where all bending styles are available for study. She's one of the few who actually has mastered them all, though.
Sokka: He is eager to return home after the war. He throws himself into infrastructure and policy revamps, and he almost singlehandedly staves off the soft colonization attempts of the NWT. Under his efforts, the SWT rebuilds and reestablishes parts of its culture that had been lost during the war. With the discovery of oil on SWT land, he is also instrumental in establishing eco minded extraction techniques, and in trade ties with the rest of the world (although he is very much helped by his sister's deep ties with the Fire Lord). It's a surprise to no one when he's chosen to lead the SWT after Hakoda retires.
Toph: She does not become a cop. Instead, she goes back home and takes over the Earth Rumble, taking it from an underground even to a world wide phenomenon. She eventually allows benders of other elements to join, and the Earth Rumble becomes pro bending. She does also establish a metal bending school. In the end, she is wealthier than her parents, but because she couldn't really care less about money, she keeps enough to live at the standard she wants, and gives the rest away to causes that interest her...like the guy who wanted to set the record for the biggest bao bun ever, and needed funding for an oven big enough to cook it. She also establishes a halfway house for runaway teens.
Zuko: During his tenure as Fire Lord, he establishes a robust social services program that includes subsidized healthcare, education, and housing for the lowest income families. Under his reign, the Fire Nation becomes home to some of the earliest pioneers of mental health. At his wife's advice, he also makes paid maternity leave standard across the nation, and includes several programs to help single parents stay afloat. Taking inspiration from the SWT, Zuko makes some changes to how his advisory staff is selected. Instead of choosing from among the nobility, Zuko has the different provinces elect a representative to speak on their behalf. A lot of the nobles hate this, blaming his wife's influence, but the people adore their monarchs and despite their best efforts, there's little the nobles can do except start campaigning in their home provinces. It's not a perfect system, but it does open the door for the Fire Nation to end the monarchy within a couple of generations.
Suki: She continues to lead the Kyoshi Warriors for a few years after the war. She also helps train troops around the world as they pivot from active war service to more local work. She helps establish something like the coast guards for several different countries. Eventually she retires from that to help her husband run the SWT. She and Sokka make a wonderful team as he handles the domestic policies and she handles foreign affairs. She often jokes with her sister in law, Fire Lady Katara that they ended up with the same job.
Aang: I'll go with my most optimistic headcanon for him. He's an okay Avatar. Not great. Not the worst. After the war, he tries to take part in rebuilding efforts around the world, but he finds his help isn't needed much. He turns his attention back to salvaging what's left of the Air Nomad legacy, and discovers that there are actually airbenders still around. A few of them are even interested in learning to live like the Air Nomads. Many of them aren't, though, and after learning how to actually use their powers, they go off and do their own thing. To Aang's shock and dismay, eating meat has no effect on the strength of their bending, He does learn to deal with it and enjoy his time with the air benders who embrace the Air Nomad culture. He does go on to have kids, and he still favors the benders over the nonbenders. Ultimately, his legacy as Avatar boils down to taking Ozai's bending, and that's it.

And firebenders can tweak the electric signals in someone's body-
But this made me think. Waterbenders can control water molecules and can bend anything the water will bring along. That is why they can bend blood. But waterbenders are also capable of NOT picking up objects that the water is carrying. So they can also dehydrate people, flood their lungs, flood their bladder, flood their digestive track, in turn giving someone diarrhoea, they can give someone a cough and a cold by increasing the volume of their mucus.
This means waterbenders would make great medics, btw. Any water is potable water. Everything is a water container. The most powerful water bender should be able to turn water into ice or steam, access groundwater in the deserts, and be able to make canals and streams.
The earth bender can bend a select range of minerals, but if they work really hard on it, they can bend any of them. Like toph did.
Strong earthbenders should be able to manipulate the very structure of molecules of the minerals so that they can sit on top of one another in a way that makes them pliable, malleable, strong, springy, etc to form the right shape and the right type of earth.
Like the water benders, they have the ability to add pressure and also control the movement of the rocks. Boomi and Toph already demonstrated what crazy fighters earthbenders can make. But i also think about how easily they can poison someone, oversalt them (dehydration 2.0), and calcify organs while the person is alive. They can cause bone cancer, they can break teeth, crush bones to powder, and puncture the internal organs. Manipulate bones did not even cover it.
They could manipulate armour to move to fight wars for the country. They could set flintstone fires without being there. They could weave metal into fabric. So many possibilities. I'm not even mentioning the industrial use, i believe LoK covered that?
Air benders and fire benders are different. Fire bending is easier to cover on an atomic level.
So they can bend heat, basically, right? But also, for some reason, they can channel electricity. The conclusion i am coming to is that they have command over the kinetic energy of individual electrons. That is why it is hard to master.
But this opens possibiliti3s. So i joked that they could modify the electric signals in the brain, but they literally could. But they can do so much more. Because this isn't atomic, it is subatomic. Yes, they can heat (and cool) things. Yes, they can use electricity. But if they can move electrons? So much more. They can change the properties of things. I can't even begin to list them. They can cut things, they can mend things seamlessly, and they can perform alchemy, changing the very structure of the atom. But that means it is an extremely volatile ability. Even the strongest bender would have to work these things one at a time or risk radiation.
Lastly, we have airbenders. There's two things that could be manipulating just air. One, they can move only free atoms. Which actually fits in with the heirarchy of molecular bonds of earth bender, molecules of water benders, airbenders with free atoms, and firebenders with subatomic electrons.
The other one would be the ability to create vacuums in space, and the air follows the small vacuums. Seeing how rigorously airbenders train, that seems the likely option despite the harmony from the other one. And then, the air bicycle is not possible. Which means. The airbenders just were into aesthetics and acting like a cult. Oh well, that's ok.
Aang has proven that airbenders can lift things with air. Heavy, dense things. They can probably aerosolise any atoms. Basically, they could pick atoms to put next to each other and let them form molecules. Airbending air out of lungs is probably the easiest thing. They can literally travel to space and make their own space suit. Out of air. Their scuba diving gas tank can be made out of literal air.

the gaang and their domestic shenanigans
it’s a group of traumatized teenagers in charge of the world
they’re gonna do some mildly amusing shit
katara and iroh have dinner once every other week to discuss their “zuko sustainment” plan
“coincidentally” it’s the same nights of toph and mai’s “talk shit about the rest of the gaang” dinners
aang and ty lee volunteer to teach dragon-goat yoga on the weekends which is part yoga and part defending yourself from dragon-goats
toph and sokka have weekly “bro-nights” where they go out to the weirdest restaurant they can find for dinner before catching a pro bending game
katara and zuko (and sometimes iroh) have their own finer things club where they read old literature and eat fancy food and shit
sokka gets himself employed as a writer on the ember island players and his first original work is called avatar: the adventures of jokka and its just as shitty as the one about aang and the fire lord but it’s about the master swordsman fighting a lemur
aang gets into knitting and makes everyone a weird amount of sweaters
zuko never takes his off
