Day 7 : Faith/Rituals of Love

Definitely geared heavily towards the 'Faith' part of this prompt as soon as I read it!

If being Queer is defying conventions and if being a part of the Queer community means going against heteronormativity and gender conformity, is it not Queer to forego materialistic ties and the love of a human partner and embrace the love of a greater being you have only heard about in stories?

All four individuals featured here were integral part of the Bhakti Movement and/or Sufism in South Asia. None were married other than Meerabai.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534) : A key name of the Bhakti Movement and the Gauriya Vaishnav tradition in 15th Century Bengal, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was believed to have been a vessel for both Radha and Krishna. Bengali doesn't use pronouns or gendered language and we may never know what they would have preferred to be identified as in a language they didn't know (English), I will simply resort to using They/Them for them. Their written teachings are few and far between but the verse mentioned here is the seventh verse of the only written record of their teachings, the Shikshastakam - a collection of 8 total verses. The translation here is my own and quite literal so that the interpretation is left to the reader.

Meerabai (1498-1597) : [CW : IMPLIED QUEERPHOBIA/APHOBIA] Meerabai was born into Rajput royalty and was married off, also to Rajput royalty, in likely an arranged marriage. While most of the stories surrounding her are folklore whose historicity is yet to be confirmed, her marital status can be confirmed, and so can her devotion and affection for Krishna and the divine, which she has herself penned in numerous poems and songs. Folklore does strongly imply that she was non-committal to her marriage and that her in-laws tried to poison her to death multiple times for it.

Kabir (1398–1448 or 1440–1518) : Found as an orphan by a Muslim weaver couple, Kabir's religion grew to become somewhat of an enigma for future generations. His stance, however, on the topic romance and marital relationships is quite clear - he looked down upon them and a huge chunk of his couplets strongly imply that romantic and sexual relations simply obstruct spiritual enlightenment.

Bulleh Shah (1680-1757) : Bulleh Shah, though an ardent proponent of loving the divine, was declared a Kafir, a non-believer/non-Muslim by a quite a few Muslim clerics of the time. He was known for speaking up against existing power hierarchies of the time and used vernacular speech for his writings (Punjabi, Sindhi) which not only served to popularize his works, but also let people connect to his words.

A personal note on my motivations under the cut.

A while back when I was actively going through the anxiety of finding out that I am ace and that I will never fit into the current South Asian society that the wedding industry has a chokehold on, I desperately wanted to see people from my own culture living happily without a partner. During one of my history rabbit hole escapedes, I restumbled upon the story of Meerabai, how she always insisted on loving and devoting herself towards Krishna, despite being married into a normative and wealthy household and despite her in-laws repeatedly attempting to poison her for not committing to her husband. Most of us from India grow up hearing about Meerabai, her spiritual connections to Krishna, and her struggles. The moral of those stories is always framed as 'believe in god, he will help you through tough times'. But this was the first time I was making a different connection, I was drawing different morals. And when I took Meerabai's non-conformity to her married life and started looking for more examples like hers, I was overwhelmed by how many more individuals existed without a partner, condemned being in a normative, married relationship, admitted to having lost human connections and faced resistance even, and yet stayed true to their orientation and sounded HAPPY! It was extremely hard to narrow it down to these four, but these do make my point! Labels are hard to transpose across cultures and history. But if being queer means being nonconforming of marital structures and being aspec/arospec implies neutrality, indifference, or aversion to romance and intercourse, then no one fits the label if they don't.

Tw: aphobia

Was watching a video of some of my favorite content creators discussing their experiences as queer people, (plus one token straight) and they sort of randomly went on a really long mildly aphobic tangent. Nothing crazy like saying ace and aro people aren't part of the community, but they were very heavily implying that ace people should only ever date other ace people, that not having sex is indicative of a toxic and abusive relationship, and that some if not most ace people could simply be fixed with some 'sex therapy'.

It's really bummed me out. I like the content these people make, so I know I'm going to keep watching their stuff, but it really sucks to remember that the community isn't as welcoming as my curated online spaces are. It just really made me realize that those types of comments are the common opinion that allos have about ace people. I even looked into the youtube comments hoping someone might point it out, and there was nothing, no one even mentioned the comments which is almost worse than blatant exclusion I think.

The part that got to me the most is that the token straight clearly didn't have any opinion either way at the start of the convo, and then agreed more easily and readily with the aphobia as the conversation went on. It really sucks that people in the queer community are the ones teaching allys to be aphobic.

Hell yeah aspecs are confused! Who wouldn’t be, when you don’t feel something that society sees as a basic part of being human? When people why you need pride when you’re afraid to tell people what you don’t feel? Of course we’re confused, confused as to why people feel the need to brand us as strange, or as freaks, or as broken. Think for a moment, if you didn’t feel something that the rest of the world saw as a basic function of life, that you’re bad and broken, that you need to be fixed, that you’re just confused, that you’ll find someone someday, that you’re faking it for attention, you’re scared you’ll loose friends or family because they think it’s weird, and you’re told over and over that you’ll die alone and unfulfilled, but no matter what you do, you can’t force yourself to feel something. Tell me, tell me in full honesty, that you wouldn’t be confused. Tell me, in truth, that you wouldn’t be afraid. Tell me that you wouldn’t feel lost if when you told someone that you loved them, they took it in a way you didn’t realize was there at all. Imagine how you’d feel, telling your best friends that you love them, that you want to be with them, to love them for everything they are and aren’t, and they misunderstand. They think you want sex, that you want to kiss them. But you don’t, you want to be their friend, now and forever, to live side by side and be with them through everything that tries to pull you apart. Imagine the feeling of saying this and more, and for the world to laugh in your face, screaming that you’re weird and a freak. Imagine all of this and more, and then think what you’d feel when you hear even more and more voices telling you how wrong and weird and bad and horrible and broken you are, saying you’re just confused and fake. Now tell me, with everything I just told you, that people on the asexual spectrum and he aromantic spectrum are broken. Tell us that we are wrong for what we don’t feel, or who we feel for, or how we feel, tell us we’re wrong to be ourselves and to be proud. Tell us all of this and then think to yourself, think hard, and tell me that it was all true. Every single cut and wound and death of people like us, tell us to our faces that it’s okay for us to die alone and broken, lost and confused. Now tell us, with every ounce of confidence and truth, that you are right. I fucking dare you to lie right here, right now, and tell me that I am wrong for what I do and do not feel. Tell me that we are wrong, and then tell yourself that you are not a dirty fucking liar, and that your hands do not bear the blood of the people you convinced of their own inhumanity. I fucking dare you.

Hmm.

It’s not Loki this time, now I’m just talking.

So I have managed to make myself a dashboard full of really cool people. But also, my thing is, a lot of the content, I don’t like it, or I’ve already heard the idea, or sometimes it brings up my hopeless ‘I promise I’m trying, I really am’ feeling. Sometimes I’ll see a whole fandom that I have literally no interest in, but I continue following that person because they’re really cool and I enjoy the content in SaSi that they do create. I see a lot of content about aspec people (and then I’m sorta dumbfounded by the hate at them, like come on, some of the coolest people I know are aspec), I see a lot of content about racism (again, I’m slightly dumbfounded about the intensity and specifity of the hate to them, as someone who has only experienced issues because they are asian), I see a lot of content about disabled people (AGAIN I AM STILL, EVEN AS SOMEONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCED HATE AND DISCRIMINATION DUE TO A DISABILITY I STILL CAN’T UNDERSTAND THE REASONS).

And so much more.

The variety of content on my dashboard is confusing, and often angry, often accusatory.

The thing is, I don’t complain about it, (if this sounds like I’m complaining about it, sorry because that wasn’t the intention), mainly because those people are really cool, I signed up for this content and I always have more time to improve.

But when my dashboard starts to feel like the anger on it is directed specifically towards me, like I am the source of all evil, I get off Tumblr almost immediately and as myself how many hours of sleep have I had, have I eaten anything recently. Because it’s my issue to deal with that stuff, and I want to be a good balance of understanding, but also happy. I want Tumblr to be a semi-chill thing where I come on here to shit post and learn just a bit more about how representation of POC is obscured in the media, or how certain words are offensive to this community specifically.

I wish to understand how to be a better person, but when I feel like it’s counterproductive, I’m hightailing it out of here, and there’s no reason why you can’t as well, if you’re anything like me, give or take some details and interchange the types of content out.

.....in rereading I can see that this doesn’t make sense. Oh well.
