GHOULS AND THEIR FAVORITE FOODS
Started thinking of the ghouls a little too much while I was hungry, so Im now here to present this dumpster fire.
Aether: frozen yogurt
He loves when it’s warmer out, it means the cold treat is even better than usual (yes he's the type to eat cold stuff when its cold out). He loves the tart, plain flavor and puts cookie dough bites and butterfinger pieces on it.
Dew: ravioli
Any filling, any sauce. Lil guy will put these away like they’re air. The store bought, premade ones are good, but he loves the ones Mountain makes— mushroom and cheese filled in a brown butter sauce.
Aeon: rice crackers
He likes to think that this is what it must feel like to chew on styrofoam. Sure they taste good, but he mostly eats them for the crunches. He lowkey hates the ones wrapped in seaweed.
Aurora: indian food
She is an absolute fiend for samosas. She could make a meal out of it if only she didnt want to eat everything else on the menu. She loves literally everything, but her favorite is chicken madras. She’s busy eating her way through the menu at the restaurant in town. She goes with Copia every Friday for lunch, its their “thing”.
Mountain: barbecue
He’s in heaven whenever they tour through some of the southern states. Loves brisket. Loves cornbread even more.
(he also just loves meat in his mouth)
Rain: cheap pizza
He loves all chain pizzas, but his favorite is Little Caesars. A crappy and slightly-overcooked-from-sitting-under-the-warmer pizza will cheer him up on even the worst days. Also hates olives. Like he really, really hates them. Dew messed up the first time he ordered and got a supreme pizza with olives and Rain straight up cried.
Sunshine: pierogies
She'll eat any pierogi, as long as you give her sour cream on the side. Sometimes she likes them crisped up in butter, but that's a big sometimes. Sunshine has still not found a filling she dislikes.
Swiss: fancy(ish) pizzas
I cant really blame the guy for liking the woodfired stuff. Favorite toppings include but are not limited to: roasted garlic, roasted peppers, prosciutto, and arugula. Him and Rain are opposites when it comes down to this.
Cumulus: pad thai
Americanized or traditional, she will devour it. Though she regularly eats meat, she only gets tofu as the protein option for her pad thai. Unlike the others who seem to have had the best luck, she has found one that she absolutely hated. It was from an Asian fusion chain restaurant. She would've sent it back if she wasn't so scared of being perceived as rude.
Cirrus: crab rangoon
She hates when there's actual crab in her crab rangoons. She just wants that sweet cream cheese. It is the only thing she asks for when they pick cheap Chinese food for dinner.

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐓 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐏 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐀 𝐏𝐈𝐄𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐄𝐒𝐄? — (𝐒𝐅𝐖)
Tumblr media
ft. rindou, mitsuya, ran, baji, draken, chifuyu, hanma, shinichiro, sanzu, kazutora
Tumblr media
𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐔 — "what the actual fuck." is his first thought. i mean, how else is he supposed to react? you strutted right into the living room, a piece of cheese in hand, and slapped him right across the face with it. he looks over to see sanzu and ran are dying on the other side of the room, while you're sitting right next to him, chomping your cheese like nothing happened. what. the. actual. fuck.
𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐒𝐔𝐘𝐀 — is confused. why? why must you slap him with cheese? what is this supposed to achieve? he can't help but stare at you with an incredibly lost look on his face as you stand in right in front of him, cheese in hand, as if this is normal. peering over to the left, he hears luna and mana shout, "oooh!! (Y/N)! me next, me next! i wanna hit taka with cheese!!"
𝐑𝐀𝐍 — hits you right back. as soon as you slap him, he snatches that piece of fucking cheese from your filthy hands and slaps you right back. he doesn't slap you in the face though; only on the thigh. he is a thigh guy after all, so why miss an opportunity to see 'em jiggle? ;)
𝐁𝐀𝐉𝐈 — is appalled. how dare you? this is war. he immediately picks you up and slams you down on the couch, attacking your neck and face with kisses and soft touches. you're both are dying of laughter, and after you two finish your play fight, he scoops you up in a giant bear hug <3
𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐍 — just sighs. again? first it was a duster that you slapped him with, and now a piece of cheese? what next, celery? he simply sighs and helps you into his lap while whispering, "you're such a piece of work, you know that?"
𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐅𝐔𝐘𝐔 — almost starts crying right then and there. how could you do this to him? did you not love him anymore? he's appalled that you hit him with cheddar cheese instead of swiss cheese; and therefore he'll give you the silent treatment until you slap him with the RIGHT kind of cheese.
𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐌𝐀 — starts dying. tears prick in his eyes as he begins to laugh his ass off, and you can't help but laugh with him. all of his gang friends are shocked that he didn't murder you right then and there, and that he's clutching onto your waist while snorting laughter into your chest.
𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐑𝐎 — feels betrayed. he'll simply look at you like, "wow. can't believe you didn't hit me with the whole fucking BAG." the audacity you have to hit him with ONE mere slice of cheese is beyond him; he thought he taught you better than that.
𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐙𝐔 — isn't the one being slapped. then who's being slapped? you. he's creeping up behind you only to slap you straight across the face with a piece of cheese, and then begin to eat it. weird, i know.
𝐊𝐀𝐙𝐔𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐀 — will stare at you for a minute, then just go back to whatever he's doing. for once, YOU are appalled at HIM for ignoring your devilish efforts, when it's usually the other way around. you scoff at him, hitting him on the back of the head, to which he simply ignores you again.

Imagine
Nico Hischier x Latina!Reader
Synop: Nico comes home after rough practice, all he wants is to do is never leave your side, literally
a/n: great amount of cheese 🧀 (fluff) + moody Nico + it kills me to use pet-names but it seems fitting for the story + Google translate for German (also I’m aware Swiss german is different but to make translations easier we are going to disregard the inaccuracies)
This one makes me cringe but maybe people will like it
+++
Y/n was almost done with dinner, just in time as Nico gets home. His hockey bag makes a loud thump as it hits the ground.
“Nico is that you?” Y/n asked but it was obvious that it was her man.
He didn’t answer, in fact he would always announce his presence but he was silent. He walks around the corner to enter the kitchen. He eyes his girl and shuffles over to wrap his arms around her waist and hug her.
“Hi” he mumbles into her neck.
“Hi baby” she smiles, Nico being affectionate was to die for, every time.
“Dinner will be done soon.”
“I’m not hungry.” He mumbles again.
“Really? What did you eat?”
He didn’t say anything and buried his head more into her neck.
“Right, that’s what I thought” she laughs
“Cmon baby, I have to finish here and if you shower now the food will be ready.” His beard tickling her neck made her shift under his touch.
He groaned if not whined, “what if you join me in the shower?” He picked his up and looked over her with a smirk.
“Nico, I’m busy and hungry so no.” She stated.
His grip went limp and a dramatic sigh was to be heard.
“I guess you don’t love me.” he slowly shuffles out of the kitchen. He was obviously joking but being a big baby.
Y/n snaps her head at the man child, “is there something wrong?”
He just shrugs with his hands in his hoodie’s pockets.
Y/n examines her boyfriend in concern but also thinks ‘is he serious?’ She turns the burner to low and walks to her man and wraps her arms around his waist and looks up to him.
“How was practice?” She asks softly, examining his eyes.
“I played like shit.” He said defeated with his eyes closed
“Neeks it’s only practice. You know you get better every time you practice.” Y/n tried to comfort the tall man.
“I guess.” He leans down to fully hug y/n because he much craved for it.
She hums in his warmth,
“Baby you’ll feel a lot better if you take a hot shower and have a plate of hot food waiting for you.”
“I only want you right now.”
Gosh he was making this hard. Y/n pulled away to look at him and pulled his back in for a slow kiss.
“I’ll be here after your shower and after you eat.”
“More kisses after too?”
“Always.”
He goes in for what was meant to be a chaste kiss but slowly turns into a quick make out.
“Okay! Go shower, you’re going to burn the food!”
He giggles and finally heads to the bathroom.
~~~
Like promised y/n had his and hers plate ready in no time. She sat in her seat, scrolling on her phone waiting for Nico to join her. Nico with damp hair stepped out the bedroom and promptly sat next to her. He leans over to kiss her,
“Thank you baby”
Before he starts digging in he notices his love’s seat a bit too far away for his liking and with ease slides her chair over closer to him.
“Wow.” She says and he just grins at her like a big goof. Soon enough they fill their bellies with deliciousness.
“Okay now let’s cuddle.” He demands as he picks y/n up and they plop onto the couch.
She shrieks, “Nico we still have to clean up!”
“Nuh-uh, that can wait and you promised.”
Nico is usually the big spoon / the one being snuggled into but he needed the affection tonight so he snuggled into y/n torso and placed her hand on his head to play with his hair. Something he always loved.
“Ich liebe dich.” he says against her body. She recognizes the German because he says it all the time.
“Te amo querido.” He smiles because she says it all the time too.
I was sitting around and thinking while relaxing after a very painful bike ride, what are the ghouls favorite snacks? Who gets the midnight munchies the most and raids the fridge the most often?
- 🎸 Anon
I hope you've recovered from your bike ride and that you had fun while on it! I actually had a bit of a struggle with this ask because I've never realised how little variety there is in what I eat until I'm trying to think of different foods.
Here are my thoughts on what the ghouls' favourite snacks are and their late-night eating habits.
Dew loves spicy snacks. The spicier the better. If it is crunchy it makes it even better. Things like spicy crisps and rice crackers are a staple in his diet. He happily will eat those crisps that are spicy challenges with zero issues. He hoards snacks in his room and will get up in the middle of the night to eat something from his hoard in bed. His sheets are always coated in crumbs and spicy powder so all the other ghouls refuse to sleep in his room. Nobody wants to wake up to chilli dust in their eyes.
Mountain always snacks on fresh stuff. When he’s working on the abbey grounds, he will often pluck a few berries off a bush to have if he gets hungry. He eats those big tomatoes like an apple while walking through the grounds and all the other ghouls despise it. Mountain definitely eats the healthiest out of any of the ghouls as most of his diet is the fresh produce he grows. Mountain isn’t a night snacker at all. When he sleeps, he tends to stay asleep until the dawn breaks in the morning.
Rain will eat basically anything salty. Pretzels, crisps, nuts, he will eat basically anything as long as it’s got enough salt to kill a slug. Sometimes he will even eat salt straight from the grinder (he gets in trouble whenever he gets caught). Rain also likes jerky. He likes the really low-grade stuff that’s like chewing an old boot because the act of chewing soothes him. He is often caught raiding the cupboards at midnight. They have had to put locks on all the snack cupboards because Rain would regularly empty the cupboards overnight and the food bill was getting too high.
Swiss always eats the weirdest snacks. He’s the sort of ghoul who will just pick two random items from the cupboards and eat them together for fun. It disgusts everyone else. Some notable combinations are: Cheetos in milk; cheese and jam on toast and one notable occasion where he dipped broccoli in biscoff spread. He will always try to convince the others to try the combinations but they never do. He once managed to convince Phantom to try a combination and it made the younger ghoul sick for days afterwards. Swiss only seems to eat normal snacks when he’s up at midnight, in which he will just eat whatever the other ghoul he is up with is eating.
Cirrus is a big fan of sour foods. She’s not the biggest snacker, but when she does it's always on things like Greek yoghurt and pickles, separate not combined (she’s not a monster like Swiss). She adores those sour sweets that they make you sign a waiver for before you eat them and can easily eat multiple packs in one sitting. Copia had to put a limit on how many packs she was allowed in a month because it really can’t be healthy eating that many at once. Cirrus is not a night snacker at all and would rather stay in bed hungry than get up to snack.
Cumulus has a massive sweet tooth. Whenever she snacks it's always something sweet like cakes or biscuits. She enjoys baking too so there’s always a constant supply of baked goods in the abbey between tours. She makes all sorts, from pies and pastries to cookies and cakes, and she always has to be the first to try them when they come out of the oven. All the other ghouls and Papa love her cooking and put in requests for what she will bake next. She very rarely gets up to snack at night, but when she does, she will always choose to eat the fresh berries from the fridge instead of what she would usually snack on.
Both Aurora and Phantom are still relatively new to the surface and are still figuring out what sort of snacks they like. They are, however, using very different methods to figure it out.
Aurora will try anything she’s offered and usually likes them all. She sidles up to anyone who’s eating and will sit there pouting until they offer her a bite. She likes Rain’s salty snacks and Cumulus’ sweet treats but despises Dew’s spicy foods. When Dew let her try one of his crisps, she sulked for a week after because the spiciness had hurt her mouth.
Phantom is a lot more cautious with what he tries. The others all constantly try to offer him things and he just turns his nose up at them. When someone does manage to convince him to try something he usually spits it out in disgust almost instantly. The only things that he has enjoyed so far were the little zoo biscuits cumulus had offered him, and the slices of cucumber Mountain had given him when they were in the gardens together. He also often accompanies Swiss on his kitchen runs during the night (where Swiss always manages to get him to try some horrid food mix).
asking a bunch for grant bc im NOSY : 🌾 [RICE SHEAF] How picky is your OC with food? What will and won't they eat? 🍔 [BURGER] What would your OC put on their burger? 🥕 [CARROT] How tough is your OC against certain situations? How weak are they against others?🧅 [ONION] What is surefire to make your OC cry? Who knows of this information?
omg hi nectar 🤭 thanks for sending me some questions!!
🌾 [RICE SHEAF] how picky is your OC with food? what will and won't they eat?
grant is, like, negative picky. the only thing he doesn't really like is any kind of tea but he'll drink it if you give it to him and every once in a while, for a very special flavor, he'll approve of it. maybeeeee not like it but at least tolerate it more than usual.
so yeah!! he'll eat anything, he does not care. he enjoys cooking and baking, it's all very relaxing for him, and he likes trying new things.
however, probably large in part because he never got to eat anything fun as a child unless he was far, far away from his mother (who only ever served "rabbit food"), he does gravitate to classic american comfort cuisine as his favorite foods! stuff like macaroni and cheese, pizza, etc. he might be the #1 mac and cheese stan worldwide tbh
🍔 [BURGER] what would your OC put on their burger?
the absolute dream combo for him would probably be like standard burger patty and bread with sauerkraut and swiss cheese, maybe a fried egg for funsies, too
can you tell he's from the midwest
🥕 [CARROT] how tough is your OC against certain situations? how weak are they against others?
i truly believe grant is much, much tougher than people would at first give him credit for (or even than he would give himself credit for...)
he's been through a lot in his lifetime and he can be very critical of himself for having developed mental illness, a chronic physical illness, and for struggling with addiction in the past because he feels like it's all his fault and he wasn't strong enough to make it out "normally" (there is no normal, i just think he would use that terminology against himself). but the reality is that survival AT ALL is a huge deal and is worth celebrating, and he's very resilient to have gotten to the place he's at in life now. was it fair that he had to be resilient? no, not even remotely, but in a way, he had no choice.
so that said, i think as he's gotten a better handle on healing throughout his 20s and now 30s (yay!! we just had his birthday last update in the story!!), he's become much more unshakable. social situations are his weakest area - for example, it took him a long time to stand up to his ex and tell her to get out of his life, and it is going to take even longer for him to work out the situation with his father and confront him one way or another.
NOW what is he really good at?! handling emergencies! if you're in a car accident, he's the guy you want to be in the car with you at the time because he won't break a sweat dealing with it. he's very mechanically-minded and good with logic and problem solving, so any emergency is not even slightly going to bother him because he does know he's good at those things. he trusts himself completely as long as he can use those skills. plus, he has many years of experience in compartmentalization lol.
we could also think about his previous job (that he's attempting to get back now) here. aviation is very safe for the most part, but you have to be chill about any kind of crazy ass events happening as a pilot because the stakes are ridiculously high. grant has an advantage in the chill factor, though, because on any day of the week, he'd 100% choose flying an airplane that's on fire or literally falling apart over being in the same building, not even the same room, as his mother. in his mind, he's dealt with much worse.
🧅 [ONION] what is surefire to make your OC cry? who knows of this information?
remember the not as good with social stuff thing?
yeahhhh, it's raising your voice at him. you don't even have to yell, you can just barelyyyyyy raise it and his eyes will at least get watery. he can handle honesty, he can handle bluntness, but not anything with a tone or yelling 😥
and i think everyone knows because his emotions always show on his face. in this case, he'll get that kind of twitchy look and his face will look like it's just been completely drained of life
How Jeremy deals with the imps, because I have some thoughts on that. Let’s go.
-Jeremy is as much responsible for cleaning up the ghouls’ messes as taking care of and monitoring the imps.
He’s always holding or hiding at least one of them in his jacket, and he’s always muttering things to them, like, “You’re so much easier to take care of them the ghouls.”
-If Swiss’ imp isn’t hiding in the walls, there’s a good chance he’s stalking behind Jeremy, just out of his line of sight.
Jeremy knows he’s there, and that, if he stops or slows down, the imp will, too.
He also deliberately takes paths through the abbey that are easier for the imp to follow.
-Jeremy, himself, does not have an imp, nor can he become one at will due to the way he was created, because while he is a ghoul, the ritual was done wrong, meaning he’s stuck somewhere in-between.
-Jeremy’s favorite imp to cuddle is Cumulus’, because she’s incredibly fluffy and soft, but her “wool” is cold, so he doesn’t get freaked out while holding her/making direct contact.
He has an aversion to touch and, generally, body temperature things.
-On more than one occasion, Jeremy has woken up with an imp or six in his bed, which he finds is infinitely better than waking up in an impromptu ghoul pile...
He can only get away with biting so many ghouls in one morning.
And lastly;
-He always has little treats for the imps in his pockets, usually little bits of cereal or cheese.
He usually gives them stuff he would also eat.
Apparently pocket cheese is one of those things.
👁️👁️teeny tiny giant infodump about terranian foods
* Skeets has never had chicken noodle soup before Samus made it for her when she was sick
* Terranian cultures have broths and soups, but they’re usually veggie soups with lots of turnip & potato-like veggies/starches. That’s not to say they can’t add meat in them - but there’s only one species of chicken exists around these parts (the Big Blue Dinochicken), so it’s off limits.
Some soups have grain in them, too - mix some potatoes and buckwheat together in poultry/meat broth, add some other vegetables to it like carrots, and maybe even some meatballs if you’re feeling fancy (the ones that are specifically for soup, they’re different), and you have yourself a pot full of nutritious deliciousness.
The broths themselves are usually a lot spicier than one might be used to, and oftentimes have stuff like ginger or seafood-related products like seaweed in them. Those make things a bit more flavorful - since terranians can’t really taste spice, they go for sour or salty tastes when they want to make something less bland.
They also have lots of herbal tea blends, caffeinated and not. Terran tea has to be brewed ice-cold, the temperature of that water being crucial to the leaves releasing the light toxins stored within them, and a cold drink is usually well-appreciated in a warm climate like Te’rra’s.
There’s a kvas-like (carbonated fermented non-alcoholic drink) beverage that can be made at home from concentrate or from scratch. Put it in a big pot/bucket with a lid and let it stand in the shade for a couple days, and you’ll have yourself something nice and refreshing to sip on during the hot day cycle.
* Anyways the chicken noodle soup became an act of care for Skeets, like it becomes for a lot of people that were fed it when they would get sick. Also both Skeets and Samus add diced Swiss cheese to it because it’s delicious and I said so.😒
Terranians have many delicious stew recipes. The most popular ones are beef veggie stews (whatever equivalent to beef Te’rra has to offer, anyway), and several types of shepherd’s pie (which also utilizes terran beef; it’s easier sourced than the elusive poultry).
There is a number of pickled vegetables that are popular on Te’rra, and some pickled fruit, but I personally only care about pickled cucumbers bc those are superior. Also Skeets is mildly allergic to pickled beets.
Preserved fruit is mostly peaches and a crunchy apple-like fruit named grabi (because the shrub it grows on feeds on small animals via grabbing and entangling them in its branches, to prepare for digestion).
Speaking of flora, because the plants are so springy and often dense (aside from nectar flowers/honeyplants, which have a mushy inside - in case of being squished, it feeds the soil and attracts insects with its smell so they can spread the pollen/seeds), a lot of veggie dishes have to be steamed, stewed, slow cooked or sautéed for a long time to prepare them for consumption. This is why cooking in large portions for a crowd of people is so common; it’s just less time-consuming to throw everything into a big pot and make a bunch at once. It gives other terranians more time to dedicate to their own tasks, as they don’t have to prepare meals as often.
This is also why there’s so many stews, and steamed veggies, or veggie blends fried in oil (they’re usually steamed a bit before or during the process, too, to soften the fibers). Skeets likes the fried blends a lot. If she’s eating steamed veggies, she tends to add a lot of salt to them to compensate for the blandness. She loves meat stews, too, even if the meat is just in the sauce. At some point, when her and Samus were visiting a tourist hotspot somewhere outside of Te’rra, they stopped for dinner at a small restaurant. This is how Skeets was introduced to fettuccine bolognese. To this day, this is one of her favorite non-terran dishes; at least a third of her and Samus’s dates now involve going somewhere that serves it (lucky for them, those places aren’t hard to find).
While eating honeyplant nectar is great, its petals and fruit are also often harvested and either eaten raw/with little preparation, or cooked, or preserved/pickled. Raw or slightly cooked, the petals and fruit retain a very nice ✨crunchy✨ texture (crispy crunchy watery like a cucumber on the outside, sweet and sticky like fresh honey on the inside). Preserved, the skin tends to soften a little bit and lose that crunchiness, but the petals become a lot sweeter because of the added sugar.
Also, terran shrimp. Are blue and green. That’s it that’s all I have to say about them👍🏻
Enjoy, @coldgoldlazarus
for wincest wednesday this fine week: food as love language & touchstone (tastestone?)
palo alto -- with a 4.6-star shawarma place two blocks north of the first shitty dive apartment he scores, and a two-story ethiopian market six blocks west, and more vegetarian and vegan options than sam's seen in his entire life to date -- is a revelation in gastronomic terms.
sam eats tofu for the first time in his life at nineteen; eats tempeh and seitan and vegan cheese. (sam does not eat sardines on saltines because there's nobody to split the tin with, and he can't eat them all on his own.) sam eats breadfruit and resolutely does not think about mutiny on the bounty playing during abc's evening film slot and dean doing his best marlon brando voice, "not even twenty, and a death sentence on your head". (sam does not head straight for north carolina come september with the single-minded intent to eat enough ripe persimmons to make himself sick, but he knows who'll be doing just that.) sam eats swiss chard and lychees and cempedak, and doesn't miss unbruised pieces of apple served to him off the blade of a pocket knife.
sam eats vienna sausages cold, straight from the can with a dash of tabasco when he's feeling -- nostalgic's the wrong word for it, but a close cousin to that. when he misses the white-noise hum of tires on I-95 and the clatter-clank of the forever-broken air-con and his brother contorted in the front seat to pass sam the gallon ziploc of cherries from the farm stand up the road ("dollar-fifty a pound, can you believe it, sammy? fucking love stonefruit season."), already sweating in their plastic bag.
sam eats off-brand cereal and moon pies and hohos -- "hohos? fuck hohos; swiss roll is obviously the superior snack cake and you know it" -- and roller dogs and funyuns when he gets homesick.
sam hoards plastic pots of coffee creamer and flat-topped single-serve bricks of jelly out of unbreakable habit. concord grape, always; strawberry, usually; marmalade and mixed berry and apple butter and honey in nicer places that serve all-day breakfast; blackberry and seedless red raspberry only if he's exceptionally lucky. (these last two, being both rarest and dean's favorites, were more valuable to sam growing up than cigarettes amongst inmates. many a favor has sam bought himself over the years with nothing more than a fistful of jam packets and a winning smile.)
sam licks marshmallow and coconut from between his fingers and doesn't think about the hostess sno-ball, sweet'n'low pink of dean's tongue.
(later -- years later -- when dean waggles his lifesavers and tortilla chips and mountain dew at sam with overtures of breakfast, sam declines. later, he'll find his favorite pineapple soda and a bag of chili lime pork rinds under the bench seat because of all the people in all the world, the one who's never let sam go unfed is dean.)
MWAH! happy snacking; cilla/mdbp 😈🎉
happy wincest wednesday!!
you KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK!!!!!! GRAHHHHH!!!!!! YOUR WRITING MAKES ME BARK LIKE A FUCKING DOGGGG!!!!!!! gnawing on this ask like a chew toy.
the swiss rolls??? the food in palo alto?? the JELLY????
AND YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
i have so much to say about this!!!! i've used "food as care" in my fics before, and as a form of connection between the two (pretty much all of tell me, why are you still so afraid, in the heaven fic, the vampire fic (in a diff way but still!), love potion no. 9, the mall fic, the outsider pov at the diner fic) because it's so true!
we're 800% not the only people to bring up the "food as care" parallels in media, or even spn--but it's so true!!!
you're so right about food being a love language! one of the first things that dean does in the bunker is make a nice meal for them both and wait for sam to eat first.
dean's "crime" that got him arrested and sent to the boy's home is stealing bread to feed sam. his crime is an act of care! an act of devotion! and it's that same devotion that encourages him to leave!
one of THEE sam&dean scenes that i've seen 400x in every edit ever as proof of dean's devotion/care is dean making sam spaghetti-os in that pot, and then letting him have dean's food instead.
dean keeps trying to ply sam with food and things to drink after his nightmares in the first few seasons, grabbing his face and bringing him close and asking if he's hungry, if dean can get him anything
and of course, arguably the most famous food scenes in the show--tuesday! pig n' a poke! what always makes me giggle is that sam never stops dean from eating? not really? he lets dean order his food every day/finds alternative food (e.g., tacos). even when he gets annoyed, he orders dean's food for him. even when sam himself stops ordering things to eat, he makes sure dean stays fed. it doesn't matter, bc they'll live the same day again tomorrow, but sam lets dean eat!!!!! he lets him eat the meal that makes him happy! they end up in the diner more days than not, it sounds like. he's caring for him, even as he gets frustrated and angry and sad and hopeless!
even when dean dies in that same episode, we see sam eating a meal at his motel, and dean's food is also on the table!!! he's been ordering dean meals for months, even though he's dead!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!
dean seems unnerved and tense around sam when eating in S6, because even though he eats, he doesn't find any joy in it, or teasing dean about it. all their shared meals in early S6 are either tense or disturbingly neutral, where they only talk about their hunts/the overarching plot in bland detail.
hell, dean (and the show) frame the leviathans using biggerson's food as a very personal and dirty betrayal--they use food as a weapon
even in IATL, the "thing" that changes about dean the most that the writers told us first and foremost, is his relationship with food! sam--who has been reaching out all episode and rebuffed--asks to go get food with dean after their initial walls-down moment, and dean denies his attempt at care and connection! he's on a juice cleanse!
many such cases!
i have this headcanon that dean stopped eating certain foods after sam left for stanford. suddenly, he can't stand bugles because they taste like sand in his mouth now that sam is not there to fight him for them.
he asks for no onion rings everywhere he goes because sam's long fingers aren't there to sneak them out of his wax-paper lined plastic fast-food basket.
and as soon as sam comes back, they go out to eat, and dean's like 'god, i can't fucking wait. i haven't had pork rinds/cantaloupe/mac and cheese/a reuben in forever!' and sam just kind of looks at him funny because dean used to eat BBQ pork rinds by the pound and sam gave him shit for it every time. and they used to sneak the little soggy plastic containers of cantaloupe from the cooler outside a publix in florida once a week, dean acting as a distraction by helping old ladies with their carts while sam's tiny hands got slick-wet with week-old re-frozen ice.
and one day, two years into stanford, sam thinks he sees a glimpse of short-cropped hair, freckle-kissed skin through the café window sam's been picking up swing shifts at, and sam leaves the espresso machine still dripping, pushing past a bleary-eyed biology professor sam knows from gen ed, and spins in a circle outside, blinking sun from his eyes.
by the time he can see, the person is gone. and sam is standing in the 7/11 after work, buying a bag of hostess powdered don-ettes because dean used to buy them on sunday morning and they would eat them and watch re-runs of 90210 until their t-shirts were smeared white and their fingers were spit-sticky and soggy while everyone else in georgia and alabama and oklahoma was going to church.
food in supernatural is connection and home and reassurance and care!!!!!
your writing is again so good!!!! thank you for this lovely wincest wednesday ask, blessed, darling cilla!!!! mwah! mwah mwah!!
̶Good Bad Habits Run In The Family: Chapter Eleven
DPxDC Crossover, Jason Adopts Danny AU
[AO3] [FF.net] [Wattpad]
First Chapter || << Last Chapter || Next Chapter >>
Jason woke up later on, the door to Danny’s room still firmly closed. The only relief was from the lack of almost silent sobs, instead replaced by soft snores. It didn’t make him any less concerned, but it was easier to think now. The man made himself a chicken taco, and left a bowl of chicken with a note on top that told Danny he could make his taco however he wanted. He made sure to also add on the note that Danny didn’t have to eat chicken tacos either, but that he did need to eat. As the kid’s unofficial guardian, it’s Jason’s job to make sure he’s healthy. It felt like he was the kid’s parent, and he was surprised when he found that he didn’t really mind.
After that he left, using the shadows to sneak into a broken down apartment building he used to hide his Red Hood costume. He knew that if anybody saw him enter and then see Red Hood leave, that they’d realize the two were one and the same, so he made sure that nobody stayed there. It didn’t stop a few homeless people who attempted to, having nowhere else to camp at, especially when nights would become too cold or the storms too strong. He didn’t kick them out, but whenever Jason Todd came around the next day he made sure to give them an actual shelter, a place where they can truly be safe.
He went straight from the shattered window to the largely empty bedroom, only a few piles of trash and mouse drops scattered about. He lifted up a board, relieved that his costume was still there. He knew he should find a better place, one that wasn't so accessible and the ceilings wouldn't leak, but didn’t bother with that right then and slipped into his costume instead. He left his civilian clothes behind, shifting the board back into place. Checking his grappling gun as well as his regular guns, he left the building, quickly scaling up the wall and onto the roof.
Up there the city felt much calmer, the sounds of gunshots and roaring vehicles far into the distance. The peacefulness of it only made him more restless, reminiscent of the calm before a storm. He hopped from roof to roof, checking each street and alley as he did so. It was only a matter of time before he was needed, Crime Alley was the worst of the crime ridden city that was Gotham.
In a few hours of doing this he stopped a few creeps from trying things on working girls and those alike, forced thugs from beating up the defenseless homeless people, and stopped a shoot out before it happened. Yet, he felt like the night was more relaxed than most, something he’d usually be grateful for. Now it only reminded him of the night he found Danny. The damp and dirty alley way that he swooped down in after hearing a loud thud sound, only to see a beaten up teen who would change so much without him realizing it…
It seemed like no matter how many criminals that Red Hood took down, his thoughts always traced back to the worrisome matter that was Danny, and it took a lot to continue his patrol instead of returning to his apartment to check on the teenager. He didn’t know whether he should give the boy space or comfort, he didn’t know what Danny needed, and he couldn’t just ask. He felt useless and out of his element, and he was beginning to think that somewhere somebody else would be better than him when it came to emotions. Danny needed help, but Jason may not be the help he needs.
Deep in anxious thoughts, Red Hood didn't notice whenever a figure walked up behind him. He only felt their presence whenever they tapped him on his shoulder, the anti-hero spun around, both guns out and pointed at whoever snuck up on him. The person held up both hands, and Red Hood already knew who was foolish enough to creep up on him while he was distracted, the carefree grin clear on the other's face.
"Nightwing, are you an idiot? You would look like swiss cheese right now if I didn't have more restraint. Honestly, I should have just put a few bullets in that thick skull of yours, might knock some common sense in you."  Red Hood huffed, annoyed, as he let his hands lower. He was tempted to keep his guns out as Nightwing began chuckling while he slid them back in the holsters of his utility belt.
"I didn't know you were so out of it. Usually you're way more aware when you're on patrol." Nightwing teased, yet there was a hint of worry in his voice, one Red Hood knew all too well. The older vigilante sat down on the edge of the roof, patting the space beside him. Red Hood reluctantly sat next to the other man, slumped forward while resting his head on one of his hands, his legs dangling carelessly off the side.
They sat like that for a few moments, before Red Hood got tired of the silence, not wanting his thoughts to wander too much again. "What do you want, Nightwing? I'm sure you didn’t just come here to sit and ogle at the Gotham scenery.”
Nightwing turned to Red Hood, laughing lowly in a way he knew riled Red Hood, except for Red Hood didn’t really have the patience or energy to go along with the other. Nightwing seemed to notice this, his laughter dying down to a soft sigh. “I see you aren’t in the best of moods.”
“You’re right, so just spit out what you want to say before I leave.” The anti-hero was already shuffling, serious about his threat. If Nightwing was here to just waste his time then he would hurry and finish his patrol and return to his apartment, so he could at least check to see if the kid ate supper or not.
Nightwing raised his hands in a palaciting manner, his smile falling with nervousness. “I don’t wanna make you mad, little wing, I just wanted to ask about the new kid you have with you.” The blue themed vigilante said lightly, knowing that it was easy to tip off Red Hood, and that it was even easier whenever he was in a bad mood. Maybe right now wasn't the best time to swing over and talk. He was curious though, and right now was the best time to get answers before the dinner that day. Red Hood would become more closed off then, as all the other bats would immediately hound him with questions. Nightwing may have also been missing their usual patrols together whenever he visited.
Red Hood glared at Nightwing, which was somewhat muddled by the red helmet he wore, but Nightwing knew that look anyway. "You couldn't wait until tomorrow at the dinner? You can get to know him when he's there." That was if they went, Red Hood didn't know if Danny would want to go anymore after earlier, and he wouldn't force him to go. He could already tell that everybody at the dinner were all going to be excited with the prospect of a new guest, and after he tells them all that he was the new meta in Gotham that they'd be more excited. It would be overwhelming, especially if everyone was showing up. He didn't need to tell any of that to Nightwing though, he'd only bug Red Hood with more questions. Even if he wanted to tell Nightwing everything, which he didn't, some of it wasn't for him to tell.
Nightwing scratched the side of his face, his smile becoming more lopsided and smaller with each exchange. Red Hood felt slightly guilty for being so snappy, but he was too aggravated to try and fix any of it or his attitude. If Nightwing couldn't handle it then he was free to leave, or Red Hood would leave before he became too explosive. "I know, it would probably be better to hear about the teen from his own mouth, but that's not what I really want to know."
Red Hood furrowed his eyebrows, though it must have looked like he was glaring through the helmet as Nightwing tensed a bit. "What do you mean? You just said you wanted to know about him."
Nightwing nodded, "Yeah I want to hear about him, but nothing really personal. Like, how did you meet him?"
Red Hood relaxed a little, understanding washing over him. He would most likely have to answer all of this with some of the others, but if he told Nightwing some, then the blue clad vigilante could tell them and make it easier on him. "I found him in an alley, passed out, and took him to one of my smaller warehouses as he was pretty banged up."
"What happened to him?" Nightwing seemed hesitant, and Red Hood wanted to roll his eyes, but he didn’t bother as he knew it wouldn't be seen.
"I don't know, he hasn't told me." The other vigilante nodded again, yet he seemed concerned now. Red Hood was concerned too of course, but he couldn't have Nightwing assaulting Danny with questions as soon as they met. "Don't ask him either, he'll tell when he's ready."
"Don't worry Red, I'm not going to ask him anything too intrusive." Nightwing assured, easily reading Red Hood, and for some reason that irked something in him. "Okay, so, how did Danny end up staying with you?"
"Well, he couldn't stay on the streets." Red Hood crossed his arms over his chest, only causing Nightwing to roll his eyes. He wasn't going to go into any more details, about how he put Danny in a warehouse for weeks and then left him on the street for another week. Or how skinny and broken the poor teen looked when Red Hood finally gathered enough courage to take him in, because he felt guilty for allowing a kid to be on his own. He definitely couldn't explain how Danny was actually a meta as well, making it ten times more complicated, especially with the whole bat gang on his tail.
"Probably for the best, he almost seems sickly with how pale he is." Red Hood picked at his belt, hoping that Nightwing didn't dig any more into that right then. "Alright, um, what's your thoughts on him? You two seem to be pretty close already."
The question made Red Hood want to squirm, almost too personal for his liking. "He's a good kid, I like him." He answered plainly, and Nightwing gave him a look of exasperation.
"And?.." Nightwing made a go on motion with his hands, only causing Red Hood to raise an eyebrow. "Tell me what you like about him, or how he's been, I don't know! You can't have nothing to say about him."
How has he been? Then it hit Red Hood. Nightwing had more experience with comfort and children in general, perhaps he would know what to do. Though the thought of asking him made Red Hood’s tongue feel heavy, like he couldn't ask, or perhaps he didn't know how.
Red Hood cleared his throat after a few seconds, it sounding weird coming out of his highly modified voice, before deciding to just answer Nightwing so he'd leave him alone. "Danny… Well, he has a lot of guts, and I don't know if that makes him a complete idiot or brave. Probably an idiot, because although he can be pretty clever, I wouldn't put it past him to put his shoes on the wrong foot. Not only that, but he's super clumsy. Worst of all, he called Pride and Prejudice boring!" Red Hood shook his head, remembering that day. "He's uncultured and ignorant, but I guess he makes good points for some books, it just takes him forever to read." He paused for a second, then remembered something and started again. "He's got some talent for drawing, I've seen some of his doodles and it's better than anything I could do while taking my time, so that's probably where a lot of his smartness goes."
Red Hood realized that he had been talking for a few minutes without much of a break, not even giving a chance for Nightwing to comment. He quickly became embarrassed, knowing that he practically just gushed about Danny like some proud parent. He grumbled and wanted to remove his helmet so he could rub his warming face, hating how Nightwing stared at him with a goofy smile and twinkling eyes that showed even through the mask. He could hear the teasing already.
"Seems that you like this teen a lot more than just him being a 'good kid'. I could almost hear the affection through that thick helmet of yours." Nightwing nudged the side of the anti-hero, who smacked it away, yet he didn't feel as annoyed as earlier. He wouldn't tell Nightwing that, he'd probably assume that it was either because of talking about Danny or from the vigilante's presence alone. He definitely didn't need any sort of ego boost like that.
"Whatever, I answered your questions, now leave me alone and go bother somebody else." Red Hood was shuffling more, about to get up whenever he remembered how Danny was back at the apartment, the sound of long lasting sniffling bringing him back to reality. He got so sidetracked rattling off about Danny that he, in a way, forgot about him. How, he didn't know, but it caused him to settle back down and look at Nightwing.
The other seemed to notice this, still as perceptive as always, and gave Red Hood a teasing grin. "What, you have a question now?"
The crime lord hesitated, not knowing how to phrase his question, or how much he should let Nightwing know. He didn't want to overstep any untold boundary that Danny had set, but he also had a strong urge to help, and he couldn't ignore it. He also established earlier that he didn't know how to help, which he couldn't ignore either. He sighed heavily, feeling stuck.
Luckily, Nightwing seemed to understand, like he usually seemed to be able to with Red Hood. "You know I will answer anything you ask, if I can anyways. I won't judge you, little wing." He gave Red Hood an encouraging smile, and although Red Hood hated that nickname nowadays, he could admit that he felt a little reassured.
He huffed, swinging his legs as he lifted a hand to rest on his helmet. "It's just, I- don't know…" Asking for help seemed much harder than Red Hood thought it'd be. "How do I- What do I-"
"Take your time, Red." Nightwing said after the few pitiful attempts of the younger man trying to get a cohesive sentence strung together. Nightwing was curious, but he was more so worried, only having seen Red Hood this hesitant and nervous a few times before.
Red Hood sat there for a few minutes, gathering his thoughts before he tried to speak again. "I don't know if I can take care of him, help him in the way he needs anyways. I don't know if I can do it. I try, but what if I'm only making things worse?" He finally spit out, only noticing how desperate he sounded after he was done, and he couldn't stop the small amount of shame and embarrassment that washed over him.
Nightwing didn't answer immediately, trying to gather himself, taken back. He hasn't heard Red Hood be so honest or emotional like this in a while, a vulnerability that his tough front didn't usually allow. He couldn't help but wonder how much Danny really meant to him, or how the teen had made such a huge effect on him that his own family teammates weren't able to cause.
Red Hood was becoming much more nervous the longer that Nightwing stayed silent, but eventually the older man spoke up. "I may not know Danny, or what help he needs that you're talking about, but I do know that you aren't making things worse. I can tell that you care a lot for him, and the fact that you're so cautious with making him upset allows me to know that you're not so dense that you wouldn't be able to tell if you hurt him or not.
"The only thing I can tell you is to keep being there for him, and that he'll probably come to you when he feels comfortable enough. Just because you don't know what he needs doesn't mean you're not good enough, it just means he needs to tell you, and that you have to wait. Unless, of course, it's an emergency or he's hurting himself and you can't stop him, then you need to get some help outside of your own capacity." Nightwing finished with confidence, looking back at Red Hood to gauge his reaction.
Meanwhile,  the younger man was trying to absorb all of what Nightwing had told him. It was good advice, and it put most of Red Hood’s worries at ease, the constant restlessness he'd been wrestling with melting a bit. It was a reminder to why he admired the other so much when he was younger, to why he still admired and looked up to him.
After a few quiet moments, Nightwing's comms came alive, taking him by surprise. He almost forgot that he was currently on patrol, getting so caught up in helping his little brother little wing any way he could. Oracle told him a location that was recently called in for suspicious activity, saying that he should probably check it out. He sighed, looking back over at Red Hood, and was glad to see that the younger vigilante wasn't as tense as earlier.
"This was a nice chat and everything, but I gotta go. Duty calls." Nightwing stood up, stretching with his arms above his head, relieved when he felt a few pops. Then after sending a quick salute to Red Hood, which caused the anti-hero to glare at him without any real bite, he dived off the roof with a grapple hook in hand. Red Hood watched with mild exasperation as Nightwing gracefully swung away, all the while waving wildly at Red Hood in-between swings.
Red Hood waited a few seconds, feeling much more tired and yet so much lighter than he did minutes ago. He looked up at the inky black sky, noticing how he could now see one single star, the Northstar. A smile slowly formed on his face when he thought about how Danny would probably be happy to finally see a star again after being in the polluted city for so long, even if it was only a single star.
Jason returned to his apartment, having hidden his costume back. The bowl of chicken tacos was gone, the small amount of dishes having been washed and laid to dry on a mat. Jason almost felt bad about Danny doing the dishes, but brushed it off whenever he knew that the boy most likely wanted to do them.
He stood up, more determined than before, taking his grappling hook and finishing his patrol. He'd wait for Danny to come to him, for him to feel comfortable enough to seek his help. Until then, he'd keep making sure Danny ate and got something to drink, offer hugs whenever he cried, and listen whenever the teen asked for his ear. He'd just keep doing what he was doing, and although it was difficult at times to know what he should do, he also knew that he must not be doing too much of a shabby job.
------☆------☆------☆-----☆-----☆-----☆------
He was the same way when he was younger and first moved in with Bruce, always insisting Alfred that he would help with the dishes, saying it was only polite of him. Alfred eventually caved, compromising that they would do the dishes together. The butler washing them or setting them in the dishwasher while Jason would either rinse them or dry them off and put them away. Since Jason was so short then, he would have one of the other three living there to help him put some of the dishes away.
Jason pushed those memories away, a stir in his gut already starting to pick up, and he couldn't tell if it was nostalgia or longing. A part of him was still afraid that it was something much more dangerous, something he always tried to convince was no longer there. He then saw his note that he left, it was turned on its other side, a new note written in sloppy cursive. The man quickly picked it up, dread and panic having replaced his sense of ease, and sighed with relief as he read the content. He wouldn't be going back out tonight at least, there was no upset teen to chase down and drag back into a safe environment.
He reread the note, much more calm than moments ago.
"Thanks for the food, and sorry for making you worry. I'm fine now, just needed to get that off my chest. See you in the morning and don't stay up too late! You can't be too tired for the dinner. :)
P.S. I did the dishes, but I couldn't put them away since I didn’t know where they went, you gotta tell me if I'm staying here longer"
Jason couldn't help but smile, the note settling the uneasiness that was lingering. He yawned, deciding to listen to Danny’s words and going to his bedroom. He changed into some shorts and a loose fitting shirt, slinking underneath his covers and relaxing into his soft bed. He was asleep almost instantly, head filled with dreams too hazy to remember in the morning.
He woke up a few hours later, still feeling as drowsy as he did the night before, but decided it was too late to go back to sleep. The whole Wayne Family and Co. had terrible sleep schedules, most of them being vigilantes or something else of the like, so they were used to the eye bags that all of them wore most of the time. Hopefully Danny wouldn't be added to that list, the teen needed the rest, and he didn't have any nighttime activities that Red Hood knew about. There could be only so many things keeping the teen awake if he did have dark circles under his eyes, and most of them weren't good.
Not bothering to change yet, Jason left his room and went straight to the kitchen, his throat feeling dry and desperate for water. In his half-asleep mind purely focused on getting a drink, he didn't realize there was another being in the room.
"Good morning, Old Man." Jason whipped around at a speed he didn't think possible so early in the morning, his groggy brain waking up in an instant, before relaxing whenever he remembered Danny. He was sitting at the counter, slumped forward with his head resting on his hands. The teen was smirking, seeming pleased with himself that he was able to spook Jason so easily. "I thought you were supposed to be a vigilante? Don't you need to be aware of your surroundings for that?"
Jason rolled his eyes, taking a few greedy gulps of water before daring to speak. "It's too fucking early for me to even try to think of a good comeback for that."
"Or is it that you have nothing? Hm, you old fart?" Danny continued to tease, a wolfish grin on his face that showcased his ever-growing fangs. Jason didn't know how he didn't constantly accidentally bite himself with them.
"Shut up you brat." The man pushed Danny's head back, getting a mumbled complaint in return. He scratched at his face, his rudely awakened brain trying to fog backup once more. He really wanted to take a nap and he just woke up a few minutes ago. He almost cursed whenever he remembered that he and Danny were meant to go to the dinner later that evening.
"So, what are we having for breakfast?" Danny asked, deciding to cross his arms on the counter and lay his head on them as he stared up at Jason. The man examined him closely, seeing how he seemed much better than the night before. He knew how quickly that could change though, and how it could be anything that made Danny spiral once more.
Jason realized that he hadn't answered Danny, and he began looking across the kitchen. He was too tired to make food at the moment, so he opened up a cabinet. "Cereal." He answered plainly as he took out a box of some generic brand of corn flakes, heading over to the fridge to grab some milk as well.
"Sounds good to me." Danny hopped off the chair, grabbing two bowls for them before pouring himself some of the cereal.
They both ate in silence, and although Jason thought it would have been awkward from what happened yesterday, it was surprisingly comfortable. He slowly woke up the rest of the way, allowing his thoughts to drift from one topic to another. Danny was unsurprisingly done eating first, Jason soon finishing his meal too, and they both flopped onto the couch.
Jason turned on the television, stopping at a boring news channel, only slightly curious as to what terrible mishap happened in Gotham recently. He couldn't help but imagine every morning being like this, both of them getting up and eating breakfast together, then relaxing in the living room for a bit as they watched the morning news. He found that he wouldn't mind if they did, feeling so calm that if it wasn't for his strong will he would have easily fallen back to sleep. The room was warm but not too hot, and there was a soft light that filtered through the blinds, making everything seem so serene.
It felt perfect, a normalcy neither of them was used to, and neither of them wanted it to be interrupted.
Of course it would have to be, as about a half hour later Jason's phone began to ring. He took it out of his pocket, switching it on and grumbling whenever he saw that it was Dick. He stood up, leaving Danny on the couch as he walked down the hallway a bit, just far enough to have a bit of privacy.
He purposely waited a few more seconds before answering, knowing that it drove Dick crazy whenever he didn't immediately answer the phone. "What could you want so early, Dickie Bird?"
"Early? Jaybird, it's already eleven o'clock." Dick said, and Red Hood rolled his eyes, wishing that the older man could see it. "Anyways, I was just wanting to ask if you and Danny are still going to the dinner or not, Alfred needs to know."
Jason clicked his tongue, putting his hand to the phone after a quick "hold on". He walked down the hallway and peered around the corner. "Hey kid." Danny, who was staring distractedly at the television,  turned his attention on Jason questioningly. "Do you still feel like going to the dinner or not?"
"Well duh, didn't you read my note last night? Don't tell me you are so unaware of everything that you didn't even notice it." Jason flipped Danny off, the teen sticking his tongue out in retaliation, before going back down the hallway.
"Yeah, tell Alfred we'll be showing up." Jason told Dick, who was slightly snickering, and Jason knew that he must have heard Danny. "On second thought, I don't think you'd be a good influence on Danny, he's already annoying enough as it is without you rubbing off on him."
"Awww, so I can't see my little brother's kid? How rude. Honestly I thought you were bett-" Jason didn't allow Dick to finish talking, hanging up as soon as he started his long-winded dramatics. He walked back into the living room, to see that Danny had switched the channel to some Sunday cartoon, seemingly having gotten bored of the monotonous news station.
He didn't flop back down on the couch, no matter how much he longed to and fall back to sleep. "I'm going to take a shower, so sit here and watch your cartoon like the good kid you are." The man teased, watching amused as Danny's face reddened from embarrassment.
"Cartoons aren't just for kids…" Jason heard the teen mumble as Jason left to take his shower.
A few hours later the two of them were ready and driving over to the mansion for the dinner. Both of them were anxious. Jason because of how much he was going to have to explain, and Danny because of the amount of people who will be there and the want to make a good impression on them. He knew that they were a rich family, and not only that but vigilantes as well. Danny felt almost insignificant compared to them, and the ghost side of him wanted their acceptance, even if he was still very much wary of rich people since Vlad. Yet, even he still wondered how the unhinged halfa was doing right now.
------☆------☆------☆-----☆-----☆-----☆------
Has he heard the news yet? Was he upset? Did he know that Danny was still alive? Would he blame him for what happened?
Before they knew it they had arrived at the Wayne mansion. Jason pulled his motorcycle besides the several other cars sitting in front of the huge house. He let Danny get off first before getting off himself, hanging the biker helmet he forced Danny to wear on the handle bar. The man saw how much Danny was fidgeting now, almost like he couldn't stay still.
"Are you sure you want to do this? We can always wait until next weekend or something." Jason laid a hand on Danny's small shoulder, who leaned into it a bit.
Danny took a deep breath, before turning his head to Jason with a nervous riddled smile. "Might as well go ahead and go in, we're already here, ain't we?"
Jason chuckled softly, releasing Danny's shoulder and gesturing towards the house. "After you then."
Danny visibly swallowed, but began walking towards the mansion anyways, mentally preparing himself. He hesitated at the large opposing doors, not knowing if he should knock or not. Jason laughed and stepped forward, swinging open the doors without a second thought, much like he did every time. He didn't care about something like knocking, no need to announce himself if he acted like he owned the place anyways.
A few seconds later, only being able to take a few steps, there was already one of the many bats in front of them, Steph.
"Hey Jason, glad you could make it. Oh, who’s the newbie?" The blonde girl stepped forward, causing Danny to take a step back, subconsciously hiding a bit behind the much larger man. Jason grabbed Steph's head and pushed her back, the girl letting out an offended squawk as he did so. "What? I'm just trying to say hi!"
"We all know how you are. I shouldn't allow you five feet near Danny. You might infect him with your bad behavior." Jason crossed his arms, shifting his weight to one leg, efficiently blocking Danny out of her view.
The teen girl whined, trying to look around Jason to see Danny. "A bit of chaos never hurt anybody, plus, he seems like the type to like that! I'd know for sure if you let me at least talk to him, I mean, I don't even know his name yet!" She pouted, still trying to get past the man, failing as he was practically built like a fridge.
"Chaos, you say?" Jason groaned, seeing the scheming glint in Danny's narrowed eyes, his grin becoming much like it was that morning.
"This is why I didn't want y’all to meet, now I have to deal with two brats." Jason muttered, but didn't stop Danny whenever he slipped past him and towards Steph.
"The name’s Danny, nice to meet your acquaintance." The raven haired teen stuck out his hand.
"You can call me Steph, excited to see what great things we'll be able to accomplish together." She lifted her hand to shake Danny's outstretched one, giving one firm shake before letting go.
"Alright, you nerds done with your weird little greeting? We should go to the dining room with everybody else." Jason said, already moving to the room. Danny and Steph followed behind, whispering quietly about what the man could only assume would cause him a massive headache later on. He was worried that Danny would be too nervous to talk to anybody, but now he's worried that the teen may get along too well with everyone. Specifically the ones that he can cause trouble with.
They all stepped into the dinning room, where most of the people were. Tim was the first to notice them, freezing as soon as his eyes landed on Danny, who wasn't paying him any mind as he stared amazed at the large room. Damian, who was in the middle of an argument with Tim, turned to see what caught the older boy's attention. He quickly straightened up whenever he saw Jason.
"Ah, Todd, I see you have brought a guest today." The tween spoke with well taught mannerism, wanting to appear as the mature kid he was, whenever he was suddenly taken back. He tensed as Jason moved, properly getting a look at who the man brought. Jason lifted up a brow, but Damian didn't notice as he stared at the other teenager who was still distracted by the bright and fancy room.
"Danny?" Damian called out hesitantly, his carefully created exterior slightly cracking as he stared surprised by the guest.
Danny immediately snapped out for his amazement, his light blue eyes locking on Damian’s emerald ones. He smiled sheepishly, his hand going to scratch the back of his neck with newfound nervousness, remembering that he had run in with a few of them already beforehand. "Oh, um, hi?.."
Will buy the cute seasonal sugar cookies, especially the cat themed ones during the spring & fall. Otherwise a blueberry muffin will suffice. If he’s really hungry a baked cheese & plant “sausage” turnover.
Denki K.
Frosted muffins, loaves & scones. The frosted matcha & vanilla crème Swiss roll is a favorite of his. But the frosted strawberry scone is a good second choice. Will be the one to order a breakfast bagel when super hungry.
Katsuki B.
He enjoys spice over sweet that much is true. He’s not one to order baked goods often, but there’s a hatch chili bread released during the later fall season that he will buy a slice or two of. If not, a savory maple sausage pull-apart roll every once in a while never hurt.
Izuku M.
Flaky pastries!! Always always. Chocolate croissant? Yes. Spinach feta croissant? Also yes. Spiced ham & pepper Jack cheese blossom? … yes. Quiches with buttery crust. Biggest yes. It’s used in so many dishes and so yummy in his opinion.
Shoto T.
Plain/simple flaky pastry or biscuit. Usually something to go along with his tea. There’s an orange blossom and currant biscotti that he’s grown fond of thanks to midoriya’s suggestion. Will have some quiche if offered. Not the meat heavy ones though.
Eijirou K.
Sweet boy loves some sweet loaf slices. He will indulge in pumpkin spice during the season. Otherwise the spiced loaf or apple crumble loaf are great choices. Will get the warm breakfast sandwiches on fresh bread.
Hanta S.
Contrast to his drinks and similar to bakugo, Sero likes the more savory pastries. The rosemary & tomato tart is the perfect snack. While the chili, egg & spinach blossom is a good breakfast option in his eyes.
Tenya I.
Cinnamon roll, no raisins but yes to cream cheese icing. Only once in a blue moon though. He allows himself to enjoy this with his classmates. Otherwise a buttery croissant will do, there’s no need for the excess sugar all the time.
Dabi
Again this mf doesn’t go to coffee shops… Will take warm bread, he likes the softness of it when it’s freshly baked. The topped toast options are usually what he goes for. The special spices Ogura jam with everything bagel seasoning is a go to.
Hawks
Learned to like the Ogura jam pastries because of Dabi. Will get the baked Ogura & sea salt stuffed rolls. There’s also a seaweed flakes croissant he enjoys with a sweet plum jam.
Mirio T.
Loves to try just the most American sounding baked goods. Apple strudel with cinnamon, strawberry & rhuebarb blossoms, Canadian bacon and cheddar boomerang? All yeses! Tamaki has told him countless times that two of those things are decidedly not American but Mirio is too busy ordering to hear him.
Tamaki A.
Is less shy when it comes to ordering pastries from his favorite bakery. Enjoys trying the new seasonal items. The sweet Sakura dango was a big hit with him. Will also get the milk bread toasted with a semi-runny egg & chives on top.
Shota A.
A bagel. He enjoys trying to different toppings but prefers having something easy to eat between classes and napping. Open to trying different kinds of bagels as well. Hizashi once bought him a breakfast bar and he enjoyed it. Still gets bagels though.
Hizashi Y.
Much like Tamaki, Hizashi likes trying the seasonal pastries. It only makes sense if he’s trying the seasonal drinks too! It’s the full experience. The toasted coconut & pineapple loaf was a surprising new favorite. So was the miso & cucumber tea sandwich.
*based on my view of them & their personalities*
Might do this for JJK or another fandom next. This has also given me new ideas for some trial goods in the bakery next week…
MORE Random Heathers HCs!
This includes Veronica, the Heathers, and J.D.! They’re all very silly and I don’t know why I thought of them but I did. Enjoy! (P.S. there’s more to come!!)
Favorite sandwich:
Veronica - BLT, it’s safe and pretty good.
J.D. - Condiment sandwich. Mayonnaise and ketchup on white bread.
Chandler - Peanut butter and jelly. Crusts must be cut off.
McNamara - Grilled cheese. Does that count?
Duke - Turkey, lettuce, tomato, and Swiss cheese on sourdough bread. That is the only sandwich she will eat.
Favorite pie:
Veronica - Cherry!
J.D. - Key lime pie. His mom used to make a killer key lime pie, so now it’s his favorite.
Chandler - Strawberry.
McNamara - Pumpkin pie, and she’s pretty picky about any other kinds.
Duke - Hates pie.
Favorite flower:
Veronica - Chrysanthemums.
J.D. - Roses. He’s not a sucker for the usual romance-y stuff, but he loves roses.
Chandler - Also roses, but specifically pink.
McNamara - Star jasmine.
Duke - Gardenias.
Favorite hobby:
Veronica - Reading.
J.D. - Building bombs. Jk, it’s also reading… Or is it?
Chandler - Calligraphy.
McNamara - Baking! She loves making pretty cupcakes.
Duke - Reading, of course.
Favorite sport:
Veronica - Badminton, she played it in middle school.
J.D. - Not really a sports guy, but he likes baseball.
Chandler - Also not really into sports, she likes dance, though.
McNamara - She was a gymnast as a kid, so that’s what she likes to watch.
Duke - Definitely into swimming. She doesn’t do it herself as often as she did as a kid, but she loves watching people jumping off the high dive and doing tricks.
Instruments they play/played:
Veronica - Forced to play recorder in 3rd grade. Couldn’t even play Hot Cross Buns.
J.D. - Saxophone, obviously! Sometimes he serenades Veronica and she laughs at him. (I don’t know why but it’s so funny to me that he plays the sax.)
Chandler - Pretty skilled at violin and cello.
McNamara - She played one of those cat keyboards as a kid. Does that count?
Duke - She can do almost every wind instrument. She has mocked J.D. for his “poor” sax skills many times. It’s a miracle she’s still alive to play it, with how annoyed he gets.
What if Swiss really likes Mac and cheese, Mommet. What if he really likes shitty kraft Mac and cheese, and Aethers the only who can make it for him, because SOMEHOW everyone else manages to make it wrong, to swiss' standards
Ok, look, as a fellow lover of Mac and Cheese I have opinions on this.
And it's been sitting in my askbox for DAYS because I have feelings about this.
I think you're right. Swiss is a Kraft Mac and Cheese guy. And specifically Kraft. No Annie's (which drives Sunshine crazy because that's her favorite) no off-brand. It has to be Kraft. And you can't fool him. Copia forgot to specify on the grocery list once and the pantry ended up stocked with store-brand. Aether tried to pass it off as Kraft so it wouldn't go to waste, but Swiss knew. And he can't make it himself--won't. Because it never tastes right. Only Aether does it right. Aether SWEARS he just follows the instructions on the box. But Mountain tried to make it for Swiss once and Swiss took one bite and refused to eat the rest because it was "garbage". (Dew ate it. Dew will eat anything). Aether complains about having to do it, but secretly he likes it. He always manages to convince Swiss to share with him too. They eat it directly out of the pan together as soon as it's done. Not bothering to leave the kitchen or let it cool off. On the other hand, Rain won't touch boxed mac and cheese. Of any sort. He doesn't care if it's the good stuff. If it comes in a box, he will not eat it.
So, when he wants mac and cheese it's a production. Usually, it's him and Dew trying not to burn the kitchen down as they attempt to make homemade mac and cheese together (which Dew thinks is literally just shredded cheese thrown into pasta no matter how many times he gets told otherwise).
It usually ends in a disaster (one time Dew really did light the kitchen on fire). And Mountain has to step in, shoo them out of the kitchen, and make some real, good, homemade mac and cheese. Which, of course, Swiss refuses to eat. So then Aether has to come in, and make Swiss his special dinner like he's a child, and that makes Dew sort of jealous (though he'll never admit it) so then he makes fun of Swiss, and Swiss tries to literally murder him, and the whole thing is a revolving door of drama. Per Sister Imperator: they're only allowed to have mac and cheese once a month.
The crews favorite snacks or any go to foods eclipse seems like he would enjoy anything small and sour
Oooo, let’s see…
Eclipse: Secretly has the biggest sweet tooth out of everyone. Loves, LOVES sweet stuff, especially cake! Also will never turn down ice cream, not that anybody knows this because he hides his preference behind black coffee and sub-par provided workers lunches.
Bloodmoon: Collectively, they both like meats of all kind, but they both prefer beef products, and mac and cheese oddly enough. ESPECIALLY the kind from Outback Steakhouse. They also, of course, consume blood, their favorite being Type O! Aside from this, Swiss like sour candy’s, Vacio will eat anything, sometimes even stuff that’s not really *meant* to be eaten. Just to crunch on it.
KillCode: Usually just eats whatever she’s given, especially if it’s provided from whatever company he’s visiting or meeting with, also usually just eats whatever the E.V.I.L. Corporations cafeterias cooks up for its workers on any given day like Eclipse does. They’re not picky, really. Only limitation is that he cannot handle spice, at all.
Solar Flare: Very rarely eats on account of not needing to. Unlike the other bots who can break down food and turn that into energy, Solar Flare can’t do that. They can only get energy from charging at night, but they can still taste and eat! Just have to clean themselves out after. It’s one of those ‘it serves no logical purpose to me or my mission so I won’t do it’ type things.
That being said, they have tried hot chocolate before! They really liked it, although they drank it completely wrong. Spilled it everywhere and majority fell out of their vent mouth because of the bad instructions they were given by Swiss on how to drink something properly, but it was worth it!
here's something horrible, because that's what this blog is right now, periods of silence before I reblog a nature picture or tell you something horrible.
my dad used to eat vast quantities of Swiss cheese. every week my mom would be at Aldi buying enough to feed an army, to the point where one of the cashiers noticed, and asked her what all of this cheese was for--"you must really love Swiss cheese!"
"I don't," my mom said. "I hate the stuff."
of course she then followed it up with the fact that it was for her husband and they had a good laugh.
....
well.
guess who also noticed the next time my mom came through her line and wasn't buying any Swiss cheese.
it's that Terry Pratchett quote (as usual). “No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.”
...
I hate Swiss cheese too. I'll always think of him. "I hate that stuff, but my dad likes it."
ripples.
gruyere is my dad's favorite cheese! he's lowkey a junkie and eats like one pack per week lmao your opinion on gruyere and other cheese? (my new year resolution is trying more stuff ao feel free to recommend lol)
cheese is the only thing that france has done well along bread and butter!!! one thing i have noticed since i'm in poland is that they don't have much cheese but they especially don’t grated gruyère (which is a serious crime vjdhnbkjgdb) even the packed gruyere in french supermarkets are good and tasty even though they're not that great if you compare it to a real gruyère from a cheese shop
there's so many cheese that it's difficult to make a list without writing a whole ass dissertation so i guess get ready qvkjfdnfdkjnvfkdjnb
i personally prefer cow milk based cheese so my faves of all time mostly are cow milk based cheese:
Tête de Moine has been my favorite since I was little because you make funny curly heads with a machine!
Saint-Félicien because it’s creamy and comforting
Saint-Marcelin is similar to Saint-Félicien
Rocamadour also similar to the last two cheeses but it’s a little but smaller in size
Emmental is what we think gruyère is but it’s not. Emmental is a cheese with a lof of holes in it and it’s great and you can grate it on whatever you want and it will give it a little extra cheesy kick
Fontainebleau. I thought it was a dessert but apparently it’s a cheese. It’s basically crème fraiche but even more battered which gives it a whipped cream consistency. People eat it with fresh fruits but I prefer it with sugar! Apparently it’s a very specific and kinda secret recipe so you can’t find it everywhere
Munster but when it’s leaky and creamy and it smells like feet
Reblochon but you have cook it to make it extra better. My favorite recipe to do with a reblochon is a Tartiflette
Roquefort. It’s a little bit like gorgonzola or bleu and stronger. There’s fungus in it and it’s fantastic in a sauce
Comté / Beaufort are very very famous cheese in France that you can eat when they are at different age which will give them a fruity to strong taste
Raclette This should have its own section on its own because it’s so vast. Raclette is a whole ass dish as a whole. There’s also different type of raclette. The real/true Swiss method is to put half of a raclette cheese under a heating machine so it melts. In France (and Germany too), it’s more popular to have a big machine and everyone has their own little melting spatula.You have to make slices of raclette melt in your own little spatula and put in on your potato when it’s done. You also eat it with cured meet. Some people add pickles, tomatoes, mushrooms too. You can use different type of cheese when you do a raclette like this to diverse the thing. Popular ones are smoked raclette, wild garlic raclette, cumin raclette, truffle raclette, wild flowers raclette etc. Everyone eats their raclette differently which what makes it hilarious because I have coworker who just smashes everything together to make it some kind of insane pile lol. Along with fondue, it’s one of the only dish that you can have ‘together’ in France and it reminds me of the vibes you have when you eat Korean BBQ or hot pot
Gruyère/Fondue Iconic dish. You melt the gruyère and emmental with any type of alcohol. Most of the time it’s white wine but my friends and I tried it with beer and it’s fantastic. Like I said before it’s one of the only dish that you can ‘share’ in France. It’s an iconic dish in France as there’s a very popular movie called French Fried 2 aka Les Bronzés Font Du Ski where in a scene, someone pranks everyone when they put dental file in the fondue because it looks similar to the melted cheese and everyone is enraged by it haha
Halloumi is awesome if you want to replace meet or fish. I just cook it in a fry pan until it’s golden. I usually do it with potatoes for breakfast when I feel like it!
You probably know those because they are popular but I also like Brie, Camembert, Mozarella (when they are of good quality they’re fantastic), Parmesan
These other cheese are not my favorites but they’re also very good and worth trying if you’re into cheese:  Epoisses, Mont d’Or, Sainte Maure, Pont-l'Évêque, Maroilles, Cabecou, Cantal, Coulommiers, Crottin du Chavignol, Livarot, Mimolette, Morbier, Tomme de Savoie
Also worth mentioning: supermarket cheese. They’re def not the best cheese in the world but you might find them more easily and they have a nostalgic effect: Caprice des Dieux, Boursin, Leerdammer, Babybel (my favorite is the emmental one), La Vache Qui Rit aka. The Laughing Cow
Hello, and happy Blorbo blusday!! I'm well *checks clock* 1h late gasp! As an excuse I can only say that today I have been packing and I forgot it was Thursday. (As usual I am @writeblr-of-my-own) ANYWAYS. For today's question, I'd like to know about food preference and cooking skills of your blorbo(es)! What can they cook, what they like to eat, whether they are good in the kitchen, or better away from it and close to a fire extinguisher!
Hello! Happy belated Blorbo Blursday!
Today, it seems the gang will either be cooking in a kitchen or burning it down TwT
○○○○○○○○○○
Jordan isn't really a cook, though he can make a few basic meals without setting the house on fire. But his real skill is baking! His Chocolate Haupia pie is to die for. Even his Tina and Tinamatua nod their head in approval when Jordan served it to them.
Unlike Jordan, Amelia isn't very good at baking. But she is a wizard when it comes to cooking! Anyone who has tried her food will tell you so! From traditional Irish dishes to spaghetti and meatballs, she either knows how to cook it or will learn how to. But her favorite dishes to cook for her friends, family, and herself are colcannon and potato soup.
Nala, on the other hand, should not be trusted to make anything other than toast, cereal, scrambled eggs, and a basic sandwich. Otherwise, she will burn down her entire house, and the neighbors!
Aiden is the opposite of his girlfriend when it comes to things in the kitchen. Not only can he cook, but he's also pretty darn good at baking. He can cook all sorts of traditional Brazilian/Portuguese dishes. From, feijoada, picanha and
Kaine is an okay chef and a semi-decent baker. He knows how to make a few basic meals like soup, spaghetti, and meatloaf, and can bake things like cake, cookies, and cupcakes without burning the house down. Though he did set a batch of cookies on fire once. Butt hey! Doesn't every baker at one point set something on fire?
Martha will just straight up burn the house down. And she knows this, but somehow, her mom and Grandmother just can't seem to get it through their heads that she should not be allowed in the kitchen. Because no matter how many times Martha says she can't cook or sets a dish on fire. Her mom and grandma will drag her back into the kitchen and try to get her to cook.
So, I asked my best friend to help me research the traditional dishes for Aiden, and she copied down the recipes for them, so I told her to send them and that I would use them here. So, here's some traditional Brazilian and Latin recipes that my best friend found for me TwT
Corned Beef Empanadas With Pickled Cabbage Slaw (Curtido)
The traditional way to enjoy corned beef is usually boiled until tender with green cabbage served with potatoes and carrots.
FOR THE EMPANADA DOUGH:
1 CUP SHORTENING MELTED
6 OUNCES COLD LIGHT BEER
1 ½ TSP BAKING POWDER
1 TSP SALT
3 TO 3 ½ CUPS FLOUR (PLUS MORE FOR DUSTING )
1 LARGE EGG, PLUS 1 TABLESPOON WATER (WHISK TOGETHER FOR EGG WASH)
༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆
FOR THE EMPANADA FILLING:
OLIVE OIL
½ RED ONION, DICED
1 CUP WHITE POTATOES, PEELED AND DICED
1 CUP CARROTS, PEELED AND DICED
1 JALAPEÑO, MINCED
1 CLOVE GARLIC, MINCED
4 CUPS COOKED CORNED BEEF, CHOPPED (ABOUT 1½ POUNDS)
2 TBSP APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
½ TSP PEPPER
SALT TO YOUR TASTE
4 TO 6 OUNCES SWISS CHEESE, SHREDDED
༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆
FOR THE EMPANADA FILLING:
OLIVE OIL
½
RED ONION, SLICED THIN
1 POBLANO PEPPER, DICED
1 ORANGE BELL PEPPER, DICED
1 JALAPEÑO PEPPER, MINCED
1 CLOVE GARLIC, MINCED
1 CUP SHREDDED CARROTS
5 CUPS SHREDDED RED CABBAGE
5 TBSP APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
SALT AND PEPPER TO YOUR TASTE
¼ CUP CILANTRO CHOPPED
༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆
Steps:
Add the cold beer to the melted shortening, and stir gently. Add the baking powder, salt and gradually add in the flour until the dough forms. Transfer dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, adding a little flour. The dough should be a little tacky but not sticky. Transfer to bowl, cover and set aside.
For the filling, preheat 2 tablespoons of olive oil to medium heat. Add the onion, potatoes, carrots, jalapeño, and garlic. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are soft. Add the corned beef, vinegar, and pepper. Stir well to combine, season with salt to taste. Remove from heat and let cool. Once cool, fold in the shredded cheese, cover, and chill until ready to use.
When the filling is cooled and ready, preheat the oven to 395ºF. Roll 24 dough balls, transfer them to a plate, and cover them loosely with plastic wrap. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball to about 5 inches in diameter. Fill with 3 full tablespoons of filling, fold over, pinch, and seal. Transfer to a baking sheet. Slice a 1/2 slit on top of the empanadas, and brush with egg wash. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes on the lower rack of the oven until golden brown. Move the pan of empanadas up to the middle of the oven and broil for a minute or until the desired browning is reached.
While the empanadas are baking, prepare the curtido (slaw). Preheat 2 tablespoons of olive oil to medium heat for a few minutes. Add the onions, poblano pepper, bell pepper, jalapeño, and garlic. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes. Add in the carrots, cabbage, and vinegar. Toss to combine, season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for just another minute, fold in the cilantro, cover, and remove from heat until ready to serve. Serve empanadas with the curtido.
Sopa de Res con Fideos
This soup normally takes more than two hours to get the stock nice and rich with the broth from the bones. That said, this is not the “full” version of the way the soup is actually made; this is the “condensed” version. Still, it's a recipe that uses many ingredients that are typical to Puerto Rico.
Recipe:
1POUND BEEF SHANK
1POUND BEEF CUBES
4 CUPS BEEF STOCK
2CUPS WATER
1GREEN BELL PEPPER CUT IN HALF AND SEEDED
1 SMALL ONION CUT IN HALF AND PEELED
2 CLOVES GARLIC
1 RIPE HASS AVOCADO CUT IN HALF AND SEEDED
2 MEDIUM-SIZED CARROTS DICED
1 MEDIUM-SIZED YAUTIA DICED (THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS MALANGA OR TARO), OPTIONAL
2 SMALL POTATOES DICED
2 TABLESPOON TOMATO SAUCE 1
BAY LEAF
1 TEASPOON DRIED OREGANO
8 OUNCES FIDEOS OR FINE EGG NOODLES
SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE
༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆
Steps:
1. Season your meat, both beef shank and beef cubes. I use my adobo seasoning mix which I make homemade, but you may use your own seasoning. Just make sure that you remember this will be covered with beef stock plus water, so you will have to season it well so the salt doesn’t wash away.
2. In a large kettle or Dutch oven, pour your broth and water in with the seasoned meat, then add bell pepper, onion, garlic cloves and celery. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on moderate to low heat for about an hour.
3. Transfer the vegetables to a blender and blend (use caution and place a damp towel over the opening so as not to have a catastrophe) until it turns into a puree (excluding the celery, you’ve just made a partial version of recao!) BE PROUD, BE VERY PROUD!
4. With a sieve, pour this puree back into the soup. You just want to extract the liquid, not the solids.
5. Now add in your carrots, yautia and potatoes. Gradually bring to a boil. Taste for salt and add pepper to taste. Add the oregano, bay leaf and tomato sauce.
6. Stir to mix in added ingredients. Cook over moderate high heat, stirring occasionally, uncovered for about a ½ hour more or until the potatoes, carrots and yautia are tender.
7. Add the noodles (fideos) and cook until they fideos are al dente.
2 TABLESPOONS AGAVE NECTAR OR HONEY
1 JALAPEÑO MINCED
1/3 CUP RED WINE VINEGAR
2/3 CUP OLIVE OIL
SALT AND FRESHED CRACKED PEPPER
༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄༆༄
Steps:
1. In a bowl, mix all of the ingredients for for the marinade. Let sit for 10 minutes.
2. Transfer ribs to a baking dish and cover evenly with marinade. Cover and marinate for 4 hours.
3. When ready, remove ribs from refrigerator and let come to room temperature for 30 to 40 minutes.
4. Prepare your outdoor grill for indirect cooking. This means you will only light one side of your grill, so there will be a cool side and a hot side. Preheat to medium-high heat with the lid closed. The grill temperature should be between 350-400º F.
5. Brush the grates to clean and then brush with some oil on the hot side. Place the ribs on the hot side just long enough to get a nice sear on all sides, 3 minutes per side. Transfer the ribs to the cool side of the grill and close lid. Cook with lid closed for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
6. Transfer ribs to a small metal baking pan or disposable baking dish. Cover tightly with foil paper and place back onto cool side of grill.
7. Cook for another 50 to 60 minutes or until ribs are tender. The internal temperature should be at least 170º F. Remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes. To plate, add a nice even layer of salsa to the plate. Top with the ribs. Garnish with fried potatoes.
The salsa:
1. In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients for salsa one hour before the ribs are done cooking. Cover and set aside at room temperature.
