I feel like not enough people understand equity versus equality when it comes to representation (or anything else, honestly, but im sticking to representation for now).

I'm gonna use the new little mermaid movie as my primary example here because it seems like that's what people have been up in arms over these days. One of the arguments I'm seeing is, "If you made Tiana or Moana white, you guys would be mad." You mean Tiana, whose background is rooted in being a Black woman in 1920s Louisiana? You mean Moana, whose entire story is based on her being Polynesian? You're comparing them being made white to a character whose only story-specific trait is that she has a fishtail being Black? Really?

But aside from that, this argument also comes up with different fanart interpretations. I see it on platforms like TikTok, mainly when a Black creator shares their fanart where they made certain white characters Black or mixed. The comments are filled with more of the same. "But if it was the other way around, there would be a problem."

People don't understand that for many, many years, white people were the default in shows, books, and other media. The other day, I was talking to a friend about how the media I consumed as a child made me assume that everyone I met online was white until proven otherwise. People of color have needed to create their own representation through fan content because where else would we get it? Being the "default," white people have an advantage. There are seven white Disney princesses (depending on who you ask). There is one Black Disney princess in the form of Tiana. If you make Ariel Black, NOTHING changes; there are still seven white Disney princesses because the original Ariel the Mermaid is still there. She does not go away. But if you make the live adaptation character Black, it adds to Black representation.

At the end of the day, if you say that it isn't actually equality because Black can't be made white but white characters can be made Black, you'd be correct. It's not equality; it's equity. There has to be equity because giving everyone the same treatment when one group has a higher advantage isn't equality anyway.

btw. it’s not funny to be genuinely mean and terrible to your little sibling? just so we’re like. clear. it’s not funny or a joke to chase them around with knives or make fun of them to your friends or Lock them in a Dark Storage Room (to the one tiktok comment i saw) it’s not cain instinct or funny or “older sibling things” it’s genuinely traumatizing for some of them. and sometimes, whenever little siblings talk about the cruel shit their older brothers/sisters did to them that wasn’t a joke to them, 90% of the time those same type of siblings will call them babies or downplay it or, pull out the classic, “i had to raise you”.

kids shouldn’t ever be put in the position of having to raise their younger sibling, but it does not give you the right to be cruel and take it out on your sibling who did not have a choice in the family they were born in either. there’s a difference between ribbing and genuinely impacting the way your sibling views themselves and you because of something you did to them. i’m sick of this shit man y’all suck

If I've learned anything from my relaxing games (Skyrim and Minecraft mostly) it's that I really like games in which you can scramble to survive and crawl your way out of early gameplay barely surviving with barely anything and you can feel your improvement as you reach certain milestones in game and level ups, but it stops being fun if it just feels like punishment the entire time or you have to keep repeating from nothing whenever you fail in the same setting. More PJO series spoilers cause while this wasn’t my favorite episode I’m seeing certain complaints that I wanna share my opinions on.

I am a bit confused why people that think Grover’s character was made weaker in this episode.

Like if you think this please tell me why cause I’m really curious.

But here’s why I disagree.

The past few episodes have done a good job establishing a disconnect between Grover and Percy & Annabeth regarding nature and Pan.

From Percy and Annabeth arguing in front of Ferdinand’s statue.

To the arch scene with Annabeth calling the arch a dedication to Athena vs Grover calling it a testament to the destruction of nature.

To this episode where Grover really doesn’t care about the people on the street and is happy that the animals will be able to get to the wild safely unlike Percy being worried for the citizens.

Grover blatantly tells Augustus that he doesn’t feel like he can talk about this to Percy and Annabeth because he doesn’t think they’d understand.

Of course if he finds someone he knows that would understand and suddenly offers him a chance to find Pan, he’d take it.

Grover’s not stupid, he calls out that he won’t eat anything and freaks out when seeing that Augustus still forgets things despite that. And Annabeth and Percy still mostly forgot Grover for a bit too. They just had each other to keep focus on the main quest.

As Annabeth said, “It’s easier to forget what’s important when you’re alone.”

Grover was both alone physically in the scene but also thematically in the search for pan.

He forgot the main quest and his friends because talking about/ finding Pan became more important to him.

But Idk thanks for coming to my TED Talk or whatever.

This hits hard for me. I absolutely adored Luke during the first book. I had already been told he would betray Percy and I still adored this man. He was kind, and he was polite, and he was a good friend. It took me 3 books to realize, "Hey, maybe I shouldn't adore Luke the way I do." But, I do adore him. I always have, and I hopefully always will. When he sacrificed himself, my heart broke. I felt the sadness of a happy boy, turned into the broken, beautiful boy we were lucky enough to be blessed with.

I mean, obviously I ADORE Percy, I LOVE him.

But, for me... I've always felt like Luke was the more... relatable of the two.

The more... real.

I never felt closer to Percy than when he said he understood Luke now.

Luke is our beautiful boy. He is our champion. He is the protector of the weak, and someone who makes mistakes. He is rare. He is ours. And I will not see him hurt.

He was sad, and he got bitter. And no one could help him with the downward spiral he found himself stuck in. Not even the people he loved most.

And there is nothing more real than that.

Annabeth Stans Do Not Interact - This post is not for you. Keep Scrolling.

Annabeth is so aggressive to literally anyone that doesn't fit in her perfect worldview/plan.

Poseidon? He's Athena's rival so ofc he's going to be dirty and rotten, and that does for his son as well. Annabeth spends a good portion of the first book with a made up grudge on Percy because of his father - and she lets him know it explicitly, many times. Like Percy had any choice or action in the matter.

Tyson? Well he's the same species as someone else that traumatized her so despite the fact that he saved her friend's life and her life she's going to bully and ostracize him to the point that he does to sleep crying. Reminder: he's literally 7-8 years old.

Rachel? She dare ask Percy to give her an explanation on why he stabbed her with a magic sword, and have a skill that Annabeth doesn't have that's needed on her quest? Endless aggression.

Percy? He got kidnapped by a goddess that Annabeth hates so in punishment she judo-flips him, threatens him and starts saying red flag things like "if you dare leave me again." Nevermind the fact that Percy was literally blameless; he was kidnapped against his will. He has more of a right to be upset about it than she does.

Hazel? She stands a little too close to Percy and if not for her age (too young to date Percy) Annabeth would've gone off on her too, the same way she did with Rachel. As if Annabeth owns Percy, and has a right to manage and control his social life. Percy is allowed to have female friends his age.

Like I just can't with this girl. Feeling jealous and insecure is fine. But taking it out on others and then refusing to apologize for the bitchy-ness? I can't stand it. And don't come at me saying she's traumatized or those characters did her wrong - this is not a post open to debate. It's a rant. I won't entertain you; you'll be blocked immediately.

Like, it's wild to me that some folks in this fandom are still trying to do discourse eight years later, when for the life of me I cannot be bothered about who enjoys x character from y media during a time of unprecedented actual real world problems for everyone, especially the LGBTQIA+ community. Yes, Victoria Chase from Life is Strange is a bitch and not very nice and a bully and she does some very bad things. You don't need to breathlessly remind me of this because chances are I've spent way more time obsessing over every line, action, and facial tic for this girl than any of her haters ever would, and because it's those very traits that make her fascinating to me and a character worthy of deeper exploration. Just like Azula, or Ianthe, or Catra, or Villainelle, or Regina, or any number of Very Bad Women doing Very Bad Things that have captured the hearts and imaginations of sapphics who just want to simp for iconic (and again, entirely fictional) mean girls as a way to pass the time in a world much crueler to us than a character in a video game or tv show or book or [insert media of your choice] could ever be. What I'm asking anyone for whom this may concern is to: A.) Evolve past the notion that what characters or ships people enjoy says fuck all about their morality or real-world relationship preferences, or B.) *get off the blog dedicated to the pRoBlEmAtIc fictional woman in her most pRoBlEmAtIc ship.* It's really that simple.

Bookish vent ✨I just need to vent about this because everyone who I have talked to about this has shut me down…

I never use tags or anything on a book before but I thought I would give it it try. So I did it with chalice of the gods. It took me a while to put the tags and little comments. I was supper excited to show my friends. But they started making fun of me immediately. Sure a little teasing is fine but they kept at it. “Percy Jackson doesn’t know you are adding tags. What are you doing?” “Why are you studying it like a textbook. Why do kids these days always ruin things.” I felt so embarrassed. I’m a lot younger than my friends and I always feel so anxious. Like I don’t fit in. And this really messed with my head.

it's actually, genuinely, honestly hilarious that in a fandom where popular ships include characters who are biologically related, characters with a 10+ year age gap who met when one was a teenager or even a child, and characters who have tried to kill each other, people hate on a friends-to-lovers ship with a <2 year age gap where the characters have a deep emotional bond and plenty of romantic subtext, because "they're siblings". my brother in the force they are literally not.
