In honour of Merlin trending for literally no reason today, I would like to share my theories that I came up with during my recent rewatch. (I'm only up to season 3 right now so there really aren't that many theories yet.)

1. Merlin and Arthur 100% fell in love with each other in season 1, but they aren't aware of it at all.

2. Merlin is so gay. I'm not sure if he knows it or not, but Merlin is not attracted to women. Every time he's seemed interested in a woman, it's because she's been a powerful sorceress or a magical creature. Speaking of Freya; his only real female love interest, what he loves about her is that he sees himself in her. He feels a sense of kinship towards her as someone who is trapped and hunted for something out of her control. I don't think he feels any actual romantic love for her. He loves her, sure. But I think he's confusing romantic love for something else. (But idk I could be wrong.)

3. I don't think the Morgana we got back after her disappearance is the same Morgana we had pre S2E12. I think she probably died and came back wrong. Because otherwise the personality difference is too drastic. Her relationship with Gwen for instance. It makes sense if she didn't forgive Merlin for what he did, but why is she so mean to Gwen?? Gwen was her best friend and maybe even her first love? Morgana was never classist before season 3, but afterwards she acts like Gwen is lesser than and it just doesn't make sense. Anyway that's my in-universe explanation for her terrible shift in character.

4. This is the most important one. Merlin doesn't realize he's in love with Arthur until some time shortly before the season 2 finale. Before the finale, Merlin is happy to cheer on the romance between Arthur and Gwen. Two of his best friends fell in love! Why wouldn't he be happy? Even if they think there's no future for their relationship, he's more than happy to help them get together because Merlin believes in loving who you want to love.

Now, I could go on about how falling in love with Gwen is basically Arthur's way of expressing his repressed feelings for Merlin since Gwen and Merlin are of the same social standing and since Gwen is a woman he can experience the love he could have had with Merlin if it was allowed, but I won't do that. This ain't about him. What's important is that Merlin, in the season 2 finale- knows he's in love with Arthur, and that Arthur can't love him back. After the finale, he's still happy to help his friends in their affections for each other, but his bright goofy smile is gone. It's replaced with this melancholy smile and a hesitant voice.

I'm so serious right now. If you don't believe me, just go rewatch seasons 2 and 3 and see the shift in his demeanor yourself. He actively avoids them when they're interacting in season 3. In- I think it was the changeling episode, at the end, Arthur and Merlin walk into a hallway at the bottom of the staircase. They both see Gwen on the staircase, and when Arthur starts up the stairs, Merlin immediately leaves. It's not a "I'll give them their space" moment. It's a "I can't be here right now" kind of moment. He doesn't even try to stick around to protect Arthur on their date in the episode where Morgana frames Gwen for witchcraft. (and don't even get me started on that episode of my god.) Normally, he would stick around in the shadows to make sure nothing goes wrong and they aren't attacked or anything. It's weird that he doesn't try to stick around!

And oh my God. There are so many moments where Colin Morgan's acting just makes my heart ache. In the crystal caves, Merlin trying to banter with an unconscious Arthur while trying desperately to heal him makes me want to cry. And any time he's encouraging Gwen to follow her heart and be with Arthur just makes me ache. In the "...you still have feelings for him." And the "you like him. He likes you. Isn't that all that really matters?" I just can't.

The whole scene in the opening of ep 6 is terribly cute. Ruan Baijie exposed as a drama sprite who was faking his injury, but Lin Quishi just accepts this in good humor as he's told this was just to "bring us closer" and for fun. Another round of, you're really picking me? but why?

He really does the, 'come closer' move to make your crush get up close so you can create a sense of intimacy with hushed voices smh

"Because there is light in you."

oh, did you give me this expensive looking necklace because you want me to join your gang?

no, because you are you.

..... misses the very gay pass completely.

(tbh I feel as if the actor is playing it like his character IS sensing the romantic undertones sometimes but doesn't know how to respond/not ready to process it and so represses & pushes it out of his mind and to the side)

Ep 7

They solved the case. Ruan Baijie gives him back the key again, "Still yours." They exchange a romantic look before he steps over.

Our protagonist thinks he's back in reality and only 15 minutes have passed. But of course that's not true: whether he entered the game time A, B, C, or it's the 12th Door theory... he's still in-play.

A roommate?? This must be the Wei what's his face, his One Friend I recall from the novel. With the girlfriend.

Injuries from the door lingering "outside".

Chestnut won't let him hug! (The clue in the novel that this is still within the door. Now, is this a new phenom or was it already Like That in ep 1? 🤔 Remains ambiguous.)

Wait, in this drama the One Friend has heard of Spirealm?! And it's eviiiill reputation. Everyone who plays it "goes insane and commits suicide". Lin Quishi acts like he hasn't already been warned that players die from the game.

Ah, created by a chinese designer who wanted to make a "comprehensive spirit world". The story goes, after he made it he added all the violent elements to the version he sold, to make it a bloody survival game.

'Can't control when you enter the door, can't get rid of it, Men Can Conquer Heaven'.

Bro goes to sleep and startles awake cause Ruan Nanzhu fka Baijie is pulling an Edward Cullen by his bedside. The more intense looking Nanzhu asks him to come along. Naturally, our boy stumbles along and meets!!! Cheng Qianli!!!!!!! 😄😄😄😄 Who is driving, like the scene in the novel. IM SO HAPPY.

Headquarters!!!!! The group!#####!!!! I'm hyped to see them all live & in color.

Emphasized again that once you enter the game, you must complete all 12 doors to get rid of the mental control of the game. ~Mind control~

(because the censors won't allow it to be explicitly supernatural)

(which doesn't mean the writer didn't intend to get around this barrier by using subtext & inferences that novel readers would understand 🤔🤔)

The clue for his next door freaks out the whole house. But then he meets cranky Cheng Yixie!!!!

He's settling in but the moment he glimpses Nanzhu's returned BUT INJURED *gasp* Must scurry down for hurt/comfort UST.

Love how absolutely unnecessary this hand-holding is. Light piano background to set the romantic mood.

A gurgling stomach growl from Ruan Nanxhu & Lin Quishi takes the initiative to stand up and make himself at home to cook for the man who's obviously being positioned as his love interest. (Like in The Untamed & Word of Honor, we're not being terribly subtle here.)

This is the 3rd time we've seen an instinctive caretaking gesture from him towards Nanzhu and the last moment as we fade out is the "boss man" looking down at his newly bestowed bandage and obviously GOING THRU IT. He's making this sigh and curling his fingers and everything.

side note: Lin Quishi is getting flashes of himself trapped under rubble. This is the second time we see them. Are they flash backs? Of a past event he survived, giving him baggage to carry? OR are we circling back again to my alternate, alternate theory that an evil VR game is part of the illusion and this IS the supernatural Doors from the novel that terminal people can get a chance to enter, to prolong or possibly prevent your death? (if so, then Ruan Nanzhu is still indeed the 12th door god. and Lin Quishi must decide to remain in the fantasy or exit & return to reality?)

to toot my own horn a min about "dumb kids in their forties," (which I fear is going to wind up my personal favorite fic I wrote in 2024, even though I wrote it in...February) something I like about it is that it addresses t o x i c i n f e r i o r i t y. I don't see that mentioned in too many places? How feeling inferior to someone can make you desperate, can make you scramble to take control of a situation, of a moment, so you can make the feeling go away. It never works--you always wind up feeling worse in the end. You can't use other people to make yourself feel better, but it's a hard lesson to learn when you feel so desperate.

There's also the concept of infantilization--it's hard to build up an adult sense of self esteem when you constantly feel like shit, when you feel like you can't measure up and act like the "grownups" around you do. You're a dumb kid in your 40s and hope eveyone else is too.

And, Jamie becoming very upset by the fact that there are sides of Cousin Franko that don't belong to him, that aren't his to claim, that he can't access. No amount of "I loved you first, you should have been mine," can change that, and when he realizes this at the end (to the extent that he can) he's not happy that Franko isn't 100% miserable and unloved--he just sinks further into the darkness that is the inevitable companion to everything in his life.

Also, Lampardian interactions (especially between Franko and Jamie) are so internal and repressed by nature. God, all the repression-! so it was fun to write an "outsider" (Christine) getting involved in this--How much does she not realize, how much does she misinterpret, how much does she see from an outsider's pov and then call out. I really like this concept in stories--when characters are up their own asses about something and then an "outsider" voice interprets it as the audience sees it and the characters have to deal with this conflict. Then Jamie has to keep wondering how much of his life philosophies (lol) are bullshit. I do this to him too in my "Jamie did a bad bad thing" draft, in one scene where he's raving about how he's not gay and Louise is like "what exactly is bad about being gay?" and he gets stopped in his tracks because he realizes his opinions come straight from his Dad and Uncle's mouths and he just. Doesn't know what to say.

I didn't intend for all this to happen! When I came up with the idea a few months ago I meant it more as a "tee hee hee, we're being scandalous" kind of thing, but instead it became a vehicle for poor shitty mental health Jamie's worst self. And something fun to re-read because I notice something new that I accidentally did every time! Maybe one day I'll use writing as something other than free therapy!

okay we all know who this is gonna be, it's not surprising, it's in the URL, it's ya boy Fitzchivalry Farseer.

Listen. There's something about the first person narration which makes Fitz get into my head. His voice comes through so strongly in Hobb's writing. I don't think I've experienced it with many other characters as strongly, but whenever I read his narration it is like he is sitting beside me.

Apart from that, he's got it all. he's gay, he's homophobic, he's tragic, he survives, he's a wolf boy, he's repressed, he's thriving.

2. listen, i cannot separate them, it would be a crime to separate them, I have to put The Fool here.

What a character!! For a lot of the books Fitz (and thereby the reader) understands him so little and trusts him so much. He's one of the most mysterious deuteragonists I think I've ever read, but it works so well. And following him to Liveship and reading her as Amber? it's joyous. I have my issues with Robin Hobb, but the fact that the Fool's AGAB is never revealed, and is actually textually unimportant is so important to me. In the most recent trilogy when Fitz got to meet Amber, I was just.... those scenes made my heart full.

2.5. I'm going to cheat and put Nighteyes here, because it feels bad to exclude him, but there are other characters I want to include so... honoury sassy wolf entry, what would we do without you being the voice of reason

3. Kettricken my love, her dedication and strength of character in the face of so much change and hardship makes me love her so much. She grows so much during the series, and I love her friendship with Fitz and Nighteyes.

4. but wait, who's that? oh my god it's the rainwild chronicles coming in with a steel chair! Coming in at number four.... Sedric, you idiotic perfect boy. Hobb is so good at writing dislikable characters who slowly become your faves (Malta, anyone?), and Sedric's journey is one of the best. I feel like I have to mention Alise here, because their stories are so intertwined, and mirrored - I adore her as well. Alise and Sedric getting their happy endings while Hest..... well. I'm not going to spoil that particular ending but, ahhh poetic justice at its finest.

5. Oh my god it is so hard to choose just one more person? Do I put Patience here for all her attempts at parenting Fitz, the love she showed in clumsy ways to a child she desperately wanted? Burrich, who, for all his flaws, did love Fitz, and want the best for him? Verity, who strived for justice for his kingdom to the point of sacrifice. Jokes on you, I pick all of them.

I guess I have a type and that type is tragic people who try to do the best for the people they love. And Sedric.

i just finished the last season of sex education and i have some thoughts:

first of all, i really do love what the show did. they brought sexuality, queerness, disability, mental health, and other "taboo" topics to light. it wasn't perfect, and i think they took on a lot of new arcs that were a little unresolved this last season. but overall, a solid show that i will probably re-watch in the future.

i'll list out the specifics of what i liked and disliked below, so spoiler warning! (also tw for anything mentioned in the show)

---LIKED---

ADAM

i was surprised that my favorite interaction was between adam and his father (michael).

i liked how the show handled adam's character development. we are introduced to him in season 1 as a bully. but wait, it's because he is emotionally repressed and has internalized homophobia. this is not an excuse, but an explanation. he is still accountable for the pain he caused (namely, to eric).

and being with eric helps him a lot, but they were not compatible. i really liked how they showed that dynamic. like, some people are so pivotal in your life, but they are not meant to be in it in the same capacity forever (or at all).

i also love how adam is able to admit he's bisexual to the horse girl and she's so normal about it.

MICHAEL

i am very happy they kept michael in the show even though i probably would have been fine if he never returned after the first/second season. but that's not life. people who hurt you stay in your life. and they either turn a blind eye to the pain they caused or try to make amends and change.

seeing michael come to terms with his part to play in his separation with maureen and his lack of connection with his son was peak. a father figure learning how to feel his emotions in a healthy way and take responsibility for how his behavior has hurt others? what a groundbreakingly average thing to show.

his redemption arc is clumsy. he makes adam feel uncomfortable by saying sorry and by voicing his emotions. but he is trying to break out of the cycle of emotional repression. yes, it's too late. damage has been done. but that doesn't mean you don't still work on changing yourself to stop further damage.

in general on this show, i like how character's backgrounds are shown so we understand why they act the way they do. but those are not excuses. those characters must come to terms with what they've done and put in effort to mend relationships.

(also, i cried during this scene ^)

idk like this father-son depiction was so helpful for me to see. seeing a parent take accountability was huge. i really haven't seen many depictions like this in media.

but i hope to see more.

ERIC

love love love this character! he's the flamboyant, confident gay some part of me wishes to be.

i was surprised to like his character arc this season too, even though it involved religion. tbh, when the religious scenes with him would pop up, i'd sort of ignore them and want to get back to the other stuff. but i am actually happy with what they were trying to show with him here.

i loved how they showed eric's conflict. his queerness is at odds with his spirituality. okay, what's new? well, he also wants to stay within the church because he does truly believe in its teachings. plus, his cultural identity is tied to his church, and he doesn't want to give that up.

so again, we as viewers do not get the easy way out (to just leave). we must stick it out and wade our way through the messiness of it all with eric.

i have a personal connection to this character's story as i am queer (more proudly and confidently now) and grew up catholic. i love how the show showed the pastor and other people in the church turning a blind eye to eric's queerness (at first), expecting him to hide it while citing "beliefs" as to why when it's clear jesus (if he was ever a real person) would have never done that.

i do not believe in god anymore. so i thought i'd not relate to anything more of eric's arc after it was clear he wanted to stay religious. but i think they did a great job showing how queerness and religion are not mutually exclusive for people who want/believe in that.

i love how eric stayed true to himself. he is proudly queer AND christian. and i found myself respecting that, even though i, of course, do not fully understand it.

also the moment when his mom stands up and says "i love you as you are, my son" after he comes out to the whole church was peak. a mother who is proud of their queer child? again, groundbreakingly average.

another quote i loved from eric: "i love myself too much to not tell my truth." this is now my mantra.

also, i was surprised i didn't find the whole "seeing god" thing super cheesy.

but it was kinda healing for me, as if i got some closure from my time being queer and catholic.

i remember reading a catholic book in high school that said people who had "homosexual tendencies" were just called by god to be stronger and resist those feelings, as if we are soldiers in a war. as the good little catholic girl i was back then, i obeyed.

so seeing this "god" say "i made you this bright so that others would see in the darkness" was really huge for me.

ERIC & OTIS

i always loved their dynamic. a straight man being able to show affection for his gay best friend (and even dress up in drag together)? groundbreakingly average.

i really liked how they showed their dynamic change, too. otis is eric's best friend but that doesn't mean he's going to understand everything about him. eric needs more friends than just otis. he needs queer friends, black friends, religious friends.

i loved seeing eric come to terms with this. he needs more! he feels guilty! he feels annoyed that otis doesn't listen to him! he tries talking about it with otis but otis shuts him down again and again.

but as this show likes to do, they find a way to work things out. otis is able to look inside himself and realize they don't relate to each other about things that are important to each. and that's okay. they talk. they communicate. they apologize. hurt is acknowledged and repair is happening.

they can still be really good friends, even best friends, even though they are really different than when they started.

i'm so glad a show called "sex education" knew to put a big focus on the importance of deep friendship.

---DISLIKED---

VIV

i really like this character! she is focused on her goals and straight to the point. no bullshit. (and maybe autistic-coded??) i'm glad we still have her in season 4. plus, her and jackson's friendship is still going strong (again, love me some friendship rep).

BUT i do not think they did a ~great~ job with her arc. it was too rushed. they had some great things to say, but little time to properly execute it.

i think the show did a good job showing beau's love bombing and how viv didn't mean to get caught up in the vicious cycle of emotional coercion and abuse (as it is never the victim's fault).

and i really like what aimee had to say to viv about love: "love should make you feel braver... it shouldn't be confusing and it shouldn't be scary."

i also love that viv stands up for herself by saying: "i don't wanna hear from you. i don't know what made you like this, and it's probably something really sad, and i hope you seek some therapy, but if you keep trying to contact me, i will report you."

it's such an emotionally mature response. she acknowledges that there is probably a misguided or potentially traumatic reason beau acts they way he does. but that does not excuse the harm he caused. and she makes it clear there is no avenue for repair in this relationship, so he must do the work of healing (if he so chooses) on his own. she will not allow him access to her.

but idk this whole arc seemed rushed and almost just thrown into the season. like trauma for trauma's sake.

and don't get me wrong, i am glad this was portrayed. it helped me and i imagine many other people in similar situations. but i hope to see a depiction of this more fully fleshed out in media in the future.

CAL

i have similar sentiments for cal's (and jackson's) arcs.

showing how trans dysphoria affects mental health and how medical transition is life-saving is super important !! it's not talked about or shown in media enough !!

but omg this sensitive topic was so rushed. and what was the conclusion? did cal get top surgery? did they finally get to experience gender euphoria? did they go to therapy to help them with their suicidal thoughts? we don't know.

JACKSON

i feel like they really should have kept him as a supporting character this season. he really didn't need his own storyline.

he already had a big arc when he self-harmed to get out of swimming. that was really important to see.

but this whole thing with his dad not wanting him seemed so rushed.i feel like there was something there. some message. but it totally fell flat for me. it was confusing and underdeveloped.

i really like his character so it was a little disappointing to see how he was written this season.

---HONORABLE MENTIONS---

AIMEE

i've enjoyed her character throughout the seasons. she's light-hearted, goofy, and a solid friend to maeve.

showing how she has been processing her sexual assault was liberating. i liked how the writers show her process of accepting it, naming it, and finding her power again. she learns how to continue living and loving with, and not despite, it.

ISAAC

i'm glad the show included a visibly disabled character that didn't seem like pandering (since he wasn't just added in last minute).

he's rough and abrasive sometimes. he's a lil bit of an asshole. but he's kind and has a big heart.

i have a soft spot for purposely written annoying disabled/sick characters. yes, you are allowed to not like a disabled/sick person because of their personality. please do. please just treat them like a human (cause god knows you don't like every single human on earth).

JOANNA

even though her character arc could be categorized as one that was rushed and unresolved, i think she brought a little more insight into jean's character which evened things out (for me).

i like how they show her denial of her childhood trauma. like, it's okay to not want to confront it. it makes sense. and if she never wants to, jean will still love her and help her (to a certain extent). but joanna might be able to be happier if she addresses it.

this quote was amazing: "i'm scared that if i stop moving, and start properly talking about what happened, then it might all catch up on me, and i won't be able to pretend that i'm okay anymore."

MAEVE

kinda weird for her to be so low on this list because she's one of the main characters, but idk i think that's okay. she needed to break free from moordale. she gives herself permission to do so once her mom dies and jean steps in to say the thing she needed her mom to say to her. she needs to go back to america to finish her studies, believe in herself, and see how great of a person she is. and that's hers to do, not ours to see.

the only disappointment i have with maeve just not seeing more of her being happy/content on screen. (i know i literally said that could have been the point, but idk it still would have been nice). she has a big heart, is so resilient and smart, and goes through a lot of heartbreak and loss. she deserves happiness!

THE NEWBIES: THE COVEN & O

super psyched we had some trans, disabled, ENM, and ace rep... but it did feel a little pandering ngl

i think what i liked most about these new characters was seeing the different reasons behind abbi's and o's need for control.

like yay! we're showing that queers are unlikable for their personalities (and not for their sexual orientation)! genuinely so happy to see that (for the same reason i like seeing unlikable disabled characters)!

OTIS

oh otis. he was definitely on the backburner this season. and i was fine with that. it seemed natural? idk. i don't really have much to say about him, even though he is the main character lol.

---CONCLUSION---

and there you have it! my take on the last season of sex education. like i said, i think this show did a great job talking about topics that our society deems "taboo." it gave a platform to many different topics, identities, and experiences. it portrayed sensitive topics tactfully and injected humor at the right moments. it wasn't perfect, but what show truly ever is.

a snarky, edgy teenager with daddy issues who constantly represses her emotions least something terrible may happen and hell may be unleashed on everyone around her... gee... i wonder why i fixated on her so hard.

Hawkeye/BJ, and BJ for the character

Hawkeye/BJ| send me a ship and I will tell you:

when I started shipping it if I did: a little over a year ago during the MASH rewatch I was doing with my partner. For whatever reason, I hadn't even thought of it before then, but once I did, it was everywhere.

my thoughts: they're cute, they're stupid, they're idiots in love, and they're a hot mess. I have so many thoughts on them, and my opinions are changing constantly

What makes me happy about them: no matter if it's romantic or platonic, they really do care about each other. Their friendship isn't always healthy, but they care deeply and it shows.

What makes me sad about them: is it cheating to say the war? The whole show is sad and funny and sweet, and the sadness is kind of integral to the whole thing.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: giving BJ the emotional intelligence to figure things out on his own. I just don't think he'd get there without some sort of external help.

things I look for in fanfic: banter. BJ and Hawkeye have distinct voices, and I love when a writer gets them right. I also love pining, but that's just one of those things I've always looked for in fanfic for any fandom. Pining is my thing.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: BJ/Peg and Hawkeye/Trapper. I'm also comfortable with Hawkeye ending up alone or with someone not in canon - it seems right for him. I'm also pretty down with a lot of other potential pairings for Hawkeye, but I like BJ/Peg (I also love BJ/Peg/Hawkeye).

My happily ever after for them: growing old, protesting Vietnam, providing healthcare for those in dire need through a free clinic, abortions, and HIV/AIDS care. I don't think they can come back from Korea and just do surgery - they will feel the need to make a difference.

who is the big spoon/little spoon: BJ seems like a big spoon kind of guy, but I also see Hawkeye just becoming an octopus in his sleep and then there are no spoons, just an incomprehensible tangle of limbs.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: laughing. Anything that can make them laugh, from bad jokes to pranks. But the important part is the laughter.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: I will never get over his complete failure of an apology in Period of Adjustment. He should've dealt with that shit better, and Hawkeye shouldn't have let it slide.

my OTP: Punnihawk because I want BJ with Hawkeye, but I don't want him to leave Peg.

my crossover ship: I have never considered a crossover pairing for BJ. I was mentally scrolling through shows in my head, and the one that amused me most was Wilson from House. I don't think I actually ship this, but they would be funny.

a headcanon fact: oh man, my headcanons are all over the place with BJ (and often conflicting). I guess one of my favorites is that I actually do think he lies. I think he realized that he's halfway across the world with a bunch of people he may never see again, and it's a chance to try out new things, so he lies a little because it doesn't feel like there will be any consequences. My favorite version of this would be lying to patients to try to connect with them better.

How I feel about this character: gosh I have so many feelings. I love him, I hate him, I want to pummel him with angst, I want to send him care packages that make him smile, I want him to figure his shit out and make Hawkeye happy.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don't know if this is unpopular, but I don't think he's gay. I used to be vehemently against this, but I've come to see the logic of the comphet/repression theory with him (and I do enjoy a Hunnicutt lavender marriage). I just don't feel it. I'm very on board with bisexual BJ.

Thanks for the ask! As always, I really enjoyed thinking about these things. Some specifics are starting to fade for me about all of my strong opinions about BJ, so it may be time for another rewatch. I think it's been almost a year now since I've done anything except watch some comfort episodes (A Night at Rosie's, my beloved).

I have two words for you. Clay Puppington.

Alright, how do I describe him? How does one BEGIN to describe this utterly fascinatingly awful person?

This man. Let me tell you.

He really has it all. He's abusive. He's an alcoholic. He belts his eldest son (our main character Orel) and gives him completely backwards lessons. He's married to someone he knew for less than a day before tying the knot, and hates her most of all, but refuses to just divorce her - not for his kids, or to try to patch up their relationship, but simply because it would hurt their status in the eyes of their conservative Christian town. He's the mayor of the town and hates it. In fact I'm pretty sure he hates everyone and everything, including himself.

And that's the worst part. He doesn't even give you the satisfaction of hating him. When something awful happens to him, it should feel cathartic - but it doesn't. Especially in the third season.

Because he's just. that. pitiful. How can you laugh at his pathetic struggling in the penultimate episode when you have the knowledge that as a child, a prank gone wrong lead to the death of his mother and his father directly blamed him for it? How can you not feel a tiny shred of guilt while vying for the downfall of a man who's very clearly gay, doesn't seem to have ever felt genuine attraction to a woman in his life, but very obviously represses his feelings due to the nature of his hometown until it eats him up inside? Hell, with all the backstory that gets revealed for him in Season 3, he almost tricks you into thinking he could be redeemed, even after shooting Orel in the leg.

Because OH YEAH DID I MENTION HE SHOOTS HIS SON IN THE FUCKING LEG. THE INJURY LASTS FOR LITERALLY THE REST OF THE SHOW. AND THEN LATER HE TELLS OREL HE'S GLAD HE SHOT HIM.

See how difficult it is to talk about him? It's very clear that the conservative, fundamentalist, sometimes downright bigoted and cruel nature of the town chews people up and spits them out, but the show never absolves them of responsibility. The Latchkeys still choose to be neglectful parents, Reverend Putty still chooses to make his sermons shallow, misleading, or downright bad advice (although he gets better later), Headteacher Whatsisface still chooses to cheat on his wife, and Clay Middleinitial Puppington still chooses not to make even the slightest effort to be better.

He isn't happy, or contented with his position. Not by a LONG way. But he'd rather sit here, in his own filth, hating himself and everyone around him for it, than make even the slightest move to be better.

Byler headcanons (but it's all in a daemon au)

Forms:

- Mike settles as an American crow. They're highly intelligent and group oriented animals (they have been shown to have really strong problem solving skills and are very good at relaying information to others). They're very common animals in America which feeds into Mike's whole wanting to be special and needed thing. They're also considered pests in most farms and are associated with bad luck and death imagery, which fits in with Mike's whole deal in season four as a social outcast. They're highly verbally expressive and make a very wide variety of noises, and have the intelligence and memory to hold grudges against specific people that have wronged them. Mike just reminds me of birds you guys.

- Will settles as a mountain lion which despite being very powerful predators are actually pretty shy and often run away from humans they encounter. They're still excellent hunters and are pretty damn powerful animals. Will is nice and soft spoken and conflict avoidant, but he is absolutely not weak. He's resilient as hell and I think his soul would take a shape to reflect that part of his personality, while still fitting his quiet conflict avoidant nature and tendency to keep to himself. Plus I just get cat vibes from him in general, something about his demeanor just screams cat to me which definitely influenced this choice.

Daemon description (but no names because I cannot name things):

- Mike's daemon is a girl and is definitely the more emotionally available of the two most of the time. Tries to get Mike to actually self reflect and deal with being repressed but doesn't really get anywhere. These two don't shut up and if Mike is alone there's a good chance the two of them are bickering somewhat. They don't have a particularly good relationship because Mike's tendencies to try to be someone else gets on his daemons nerves, but once he gets over that they do become much closer. She usually rides around on Mike's shoulder but will occasionally perch on the larger daemons in the party.

- Will has a boy daemon (In anything I write this has nothing to do with a characters sexuality, it is still seen as odd in universe thought) which definitely contributes to the amount of slurs thrown his way. He is a lot more blunt than Will typically is (Think how Will acts with El at rink-o-mania), and is usually much quicker to create boundaries and express displeasure than Will. Despite this he doesn't talk all that much and has a very soft voice. Spends most of his time curled up next to or under whatever Will is sitting on, but does let Will pet him when upset. Neither one of them is thrilled about how big he settles but since they can't do anything about it they just sort of deal with it.

When do they settle?:

- I'm such a sucker for the idea Mike's daemon settles after his Dawson Creek oh shit I'm gay hug with his mom at the end of season three. He doesn't actually notice she isn't going to change anymore until that night and he's not super happy about it. They don't talk much for the first few months after that.

- Will is a bit more complicated I feel like he could either settle after being trapped in the upside down, right after the Byers move, or he settles after the conversation in the pizza parlor between Will and Johnathan. Either way there's an adjustment period for the both of them since they're both used to him taking much smaller forms.

How do their daemons act with each other?:

- When they were kids Will's daemon took small forms and Mike's took larger more protective forms, so Mike's daemon spends a lot of time acting as a shield between Will's daemon and the outside world. When alone the two daemons would usually curl up next to each other and just sit in comfortable silence. Since Mike's daemon winds up being way smaller than Will's she's still tries to be the intimidating one (which usually doesn't work because crows aren't that scary to most people) but she's still the loud one. Will's daemon is mostly just content to let her do her own thing, and the two of them are much more hesitant to show affection even when nobody else is around after settling. Once Will and Mike get together Mike's daemon gets in the habit of perching on the head or back of Will's daemon and coos or purrs at him. Will's daemon also purrs back at her. They talk more frequently while Mike and Will are spending time with each other, but still like to just bask in each other's company without needing to say much.

I am working on choosing daemons for all of the main cast but I only have like five for sure assignments including these two as of now so I just wanted to post my thoughts on these two for the time being. Feel free to leave any ideas in the replies I love talking about things like this.

Mic fits best as the beast. He's already got a built-in power: his loud screaming. The dude could be cursed with an animal form and a horrifically powerful voice that'll blast everything if he feels too excited or gets mad. Naturally, there's no support gear for him to help control this. You could give him a background as a singer and someone who loves to talk, but now he needs to stay silent to avoid too much destruction. This repression causes the rage to build up inside of him and it makes him more threatening. When he really lets all that anger out, he can unleash horrific devastation. Instead of The Beast being a furry mammal looking guy, you could have Mic's beast form have bird traits. He could have cockatiel style hair that goes up and down when he's happy. You could even keep Aizawa's erasure, to a degree. Maybe his eye trick just causes Mic's constantly active power to not work, so he doesn't destroy things. He's able to sing again, but only while Aizawa is looking at him. You'd need to give a real reason as to why Mic would want to keep someone in his mansion, possibly against their will. He doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to do that, even if his life is in shambles. Well, here you have it. Aizawa is his "cure." You could have Oboro take on the role of Gaston in this universe, who has been blessed by the gods to have cloud powers. He's intervening in what he believes to be a kidnapping. If you like Midnight, she could be here too. Maybe she also wants Aizawa, and is competing with Oboro for who captures his heart. They both have incredible superpowers and a desire to be "heroes." They set off to rescue the guy. But she learns that Aizawa's gay at the end of the story. Then she and Oboro get together, because Oboro's bi. Oboro saw that Mic and Aizawa already have a thing and he goes home. It would let you develop two romance stories at the same time and also include their friend group.

This could optionally lead to a second mission, since these are MHA characters: they find the witch and beat her until she undoes the curse. They could discover that she's cursed many more people for completely arbitrary reasons and it leads to a big fight scene where she's defeated by Mic's attack. For example, the witch turned Toru invisible because she felt she was too vain. Mineta used to be very attractive and tall, but she turned him into what he looks like canonically. They come across Shishida and he got the same treatment Mic did. In the original fairy tale, they just kinda let the witch get away with this. She had no right to treat people like this and she inflicted a cruel punishment on a child and his completely unrelated servants. I like the idea of people keeping their powers when you put them in different scenarios, since their abilities make up such a large part of who they are.

Yeah, if I make Mic the beast, he’ll have bird elements (and some cat stuff, because I see him as a bird cat personally). I like the idea of Mic not being the only one cursed but wanna do something different from the Disney version. (I’m definitely gonna try to get Class 1-A in there if I can.) Not sure if I’ll do the MidCloud pair. I don’t hate the pair, but they don’t do anything for me either, and I’m not a fan of pairing up spares just to pair them. (Though, I like BlackNight [Midnight / Kurogiri], ironically.) I agree that cursing the servants was going too far, but if you read old-school fairy tales and myths, that’s what they did; they went too far. If you irritated them in the slightest, your entire family would be cursed for generations. If you were a king, it was your kingdom. That’s why the fae were widely regarded as evil in ye days of old. Still, these are good ideas, and I’ll keep them in mind when I start writing! Thank you so much for sharing!

Y/n grinned to himself as he wiped of some of the sweat on his forehead with the provided towel, continuing his walk to the nearby restrooms. A long game with a lot of drinking water involved definitely made him need to use the restroom and clean up a bit. He hummed as he saw a sign directing him to the restroom, glad he didn't get lost. He stopped in his tracks when the door opened at out walked a few boys. Familiar boys. From middle school. He knew they immediately recognized him, immediately shifting his gaze down to his shoes as he heard stifled laughs and approaching footsteps. Large shadows loomed over him, making his anxiety rise and his heart race in fear. These were the same boys that assaulted him back in middle school, the same ones that outed him for being gay and caused the whole school to laugh at him. He knew what they were capable of and didn't want to get hurt again.

"Well well well, look at this! The little dick lover is here! Haven't seen you since middle school." One spoke up, causing a string of laughs to erupt from the group. Y/n bit his lip hard, needing to stay quiet. If he didn't talk and didn't give them a reaction, they'd leave him alone. Or so he thought.

"What? Cat got your tongue? Just as pathetic as back then." The same guy prodded more and more, throwing more insults and a few slurs at y/n. The hallway filled with howls of laughter and yells of insults, y/n trying his hardest to not give in and breakdown in tears. “Haha, the f*g is gonna cry! What a baby!” Another cackled out. Y/n gulped, forcing himself to move and try to push past the group.

“Now what the fuck do you think you’re doing, huh?” One aggressively grabbed y/n’s jersey and slammed him into the wall. He let out a choked groan and glared at the boy, seeing him stare at him with narrowed eyes. “I’ll make sure you don’t play another game and-” “And how do you think you’re gonna enforce that?” A voice barked from behind the group, everyone turning their attention to the owner of the voice. Y/n’s aggressor let go of his shirt and faked a happy smile. “Oh hello there! Sorry, this is just an old friend of ours and we’re just joking!” 

Yaku narrowed his eyes, scanning everyone in the group. They all held back smiles, some blatantly whispering to another. He exhaled through his nose, repressing all the nerves yelling at him to punch them all. “It’d be best if you all leave now.” He said through gritted teeth. The group looked at each other and shared smirks before the previous aggressor leaned down with his hands on his knees. “Look little kid, you better get lost or do you need us to find your mommy?” The remark caused an eruption of laughter to erupt from the group. Yaku looked him up and down, dissatisfied. “Not very clever considering you know that I am a third year. You’re being extremely unfunny and uncharismatic, and abusive. I suggest you all leave now before something happens.” Yaku warned.

The group just scoffed, taking the warning and throwing it in the bin. “Oh? And what’s a measly looking toddler gonna do to me?” Yaku sighed in disappointment. He was mere seconds away of beating them all to a pulp. People like them made his blood boil. Not only being blatantly rude, but disrespecting his boyfriend. And no one gets away with disrespecting his boyfriend.

“Y/n come over here, we should get back to the team. We are going to leave back to Nekoma soon.” Yaku motioned for y/n to come to him, watching him nervously try to make his way around the group. Someone from the group shoved y/n hard against the ground, grinning when he fell and hissed in pain from the impact. In the blink of an eye, the boy was also on the ground with a bleeding nose. Yaku kneeled at y/n’s side, helping him up as he kept an eye on the group as they checked up on their friend. “Watch your mouths and learn to be mature. If I see you all doing this again, worse will happen.” Yaku warned, helping y/n walk away from the group and to another set of restrooms. He gently cupped y/n’s cheeks and checked for any injuries. 

Y/n closed his eyes and leaned into Yaku’s warm and comfortable touch. He couldn’t imagine what would of happened to him if he hadn’t shown up and protected him. All he knew was he was tired and so very grateful. “Did they hurt you physically dear?” He calmly asked, watching as y/n opened his eyes and didn’t make any eye contact. “Besides shoving me against the wall and ground, no..” Yaku nodded and gently pressed against y/n’s back, watching for any discomfort presented on his face. Y/n didn’t fight back, used to this sort of treatment. Anytime during a game he would get semi-injured, Yaku would check for any hidden injuries y/n might have. Just a precaution to make sure if he was hurt then he would get time to heal.

“Thank you...for coming to-to help me..” Y/n mumbled out, rubbing at his eyes to stop himself from crying. ‘This is not the time to cry y/n, not fucking now.’ Y/n mentally cursed at himself. Yaku frowned and wrapped his arms around y/n, hugging him tightly. Y/n clung to him, sniffling as he silently cried. “Of course dear, I’ll always be there to make sure you end up safe. I love you so much, so so so much.” He reminded y/n, “And I’m going to make sure they won’t ever hurt you and harass you again.” 

The two stayed in each others arms until y/n was able to calm down and stop crying, Yaku occasionally saying sappy things to help settle y/n’s mind. “Come now, the bus is leaving soon. It takes about an hour or two to get back to Nekoma so we can take a nap. Oh and you better keep up your promise you made before the game.” Yaku smiled as he opened the bathroom door, letting y/n walk out first. Y/n tilted his head with a confused look. “Promise?” Yaku grinned and wrapped an arm around y/n’s waist. “Remember? You said you would spend the weekend over at my house if we won the game. Movie marathon and cuddles.” Y/n smiled and leaned against him. It sounded like heaven. 

Y/n sighed happily as they returned back to the team, everyone standing outside the bus whilst the last few bags were loaded in. “Oh there you two are! We almost left you!” Lev smiled at the approaching duo, noticing y/n’s tired look. “Well, everyone get on now that everyone is accounted for.” Coach Nekomata waved everyone in, raising a brow as Yaku guided y/n to Lev to help him up and into the bus. The libero walked up to the coach and bowed. “Sorry for being late. Some players from the team we played against today were harassing and assaulting y/n.” Yaku explained, missing the detail of him giving one of them a nose bleed. Coach Nekomata gave him a smile as he chuckled. “I’m guessing you stopped it all by hitting one of them, right?” Yaku went wide eyed, blushing from embarrassment. How the hell did he know?! “Don’t worry, this has happened many times. I understand, and I know I’m gonna get a mouthful from their coach.” Nekomata laughed, already imagining the confrontation. Yaku looked down his shoes and bowed. “I apologize- I-I didn’t mean to-” “No Yaku, it’s alright. The whole team isn’t a very nice team, including the coach. I just accepted the invite to let you all play against them because you all needed an extra game.” He explained. Yaku let out a relieved sigh and glanced back at the school, hoping to never go back there. 

Yaku made his way onto the bus, seeing y/n leaning against the window in a far back seat with tired eyes that fought to stay awake. He quickly made his way to the seat, sitting next to him. “C’mere you can fall asleep now dear.” Y/n looked at Yaku for conformation, smiling gratefully when he nodded. The thing Liam hates the most about his mornings though is the terrible voice of the guy who lives below him. He can’t sing for shit and Liam tried to politely let him understand that by throwing flour and water on his balcony, and also by shouting it to him, you can’t sing for shit!, and then by writing it into a note he proceeded to attach to his door, but this Raeken guy just keeps doing it, every single morning, like a fucking rooster. Liam did nothing to deserve this. The Most In-depth Analysis of Luca Marinelli’s Characters You’ll Ever Need

You’d think I was done with classifications, but I’m not! There’s so much more I can say about Luca Marinelli’s oeuvre and his magnificent roster of characters. And yes, I’ve made this post before where I highlighted specific tropes that show up in a lot of his movies, but that was surface-level shit. This is an actual exploration of what makes a Luca Marinelli character besides being a kinky little whore. And don’t worry, it’s still in that user-friendly question-answer format because I love you.

Here’s the thing: Luca is a chameleon but he also has a type, and this type is:

That’s the skeleton. Let’s see how many of his major roles possess that skeleton at all and what flavors they add to the picture.

Disclaimer: I excluded characters with little screen time and Joseph from Mary of Nazareth because he doesn’t deserve rights. Also, instead of going in the boring chronological order, I’m gonna start with the least typical character for Luca and end with the crème de la crème. The results may not surprise you.

Nicky (The Old Guard)

Is he queer? Undeniably.

Is he repressed? No.

Does he have an addiction? No.

Does he have daddy issues? I know we’re all deeply affected by our shitty father figures but I would genuinely question Nicky’s sanity if he were still on that shit at the ripe age of 951. A little tip for daddy-hating immortals out there: just do what Angel did and kill your shitty dad. Problem solved.

Is he violent? Despite doling out tons of violence, he doesn’t have a violent nature and seems uninterested in hating his enemy or delivering retribution.

Does he need a good night sleep? I’m sure nothing helps one sleep better than a Joe-shaped big spoon.

Does he need a good cry? Doesn’t seem like it.

Flavors: A perfect immortal warrior bean in a healthy relationship.

Conclusion: Ironically but unsurprisingly, Nicky is the least Luca-like character.

Guido (Tutti i santi giorni)

Is he queer? I don’t believe so but who knows? If someone told me he’s demisexual, I’d believe it.

Is he repressed? The movie may disagree, but I say yes, obviously.

Does he have an addiction? Not unless you count his romantic relationship.

Does he have daddy issues? His family is so supportive and wholesome it’s almost parodic.

Is he violent? He’s the opposite of a toxic macho dude, but then he has a violent outburst out of nowhere because the movie is bad.

Does he need a good night sleep? He doesn’t like sleeping at night.

Does he need a good cry? Naturally.

Flavors: An adorkable awkward nerd with flowery speech.

Conclusion: I can forgive straightness and wholesomeness but I can’t forgive lack of complexity.

Martin (Martin Eden)

Is he queer? I don’t believe so.

Is he repressed? Yes.

Flavors: An arrogant, pretentious, politically confused writer.

Conclusion: A little too straight for your typical Luca, but he makes up for it with being complex and complicated.

Gabriele (Waves)

Conclusion: Even though it’s a biopic, there are still many Luca-isms there. He’s just that kind of actor.

Does he have an addiction? About half of the breaths he takes are filled with cigarette smoke.

Does he have daddy issues? He seems to have a good and loving relationship with both his parents.

Is he queer? I personally read him as asexual. Though assigning asexuality to characters who are traumatized is a dangerous path so don’t quote me on this, okay?

Does he have an addiction? It’s debatable whether self-harm and eating disorders can be considered addictions, but they’re part of his character, and I thought you should know.

Does he have daddy issues? His parents played their part in messing him up which then led to the big thing that really messed him up, though other than that his dad is barely a presence.

Is he violent? Not at all.

Does he need a good night sleep? At least 17 hours.

Does he need a good cry? Oh, so much. He needs all the cry.

Flavors: A quiet genius with lots of guilt.

Conclusion: Can you believe this was his first film role? Our boy is talented af!

Fabio (Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot)

Is he queer? Undeniably.

Is he repressed? You could argue that he is repressed by being limited in his place in social hierarchy.

Does he have an addiction? Amazingly enough, no. He has fixations, though.

Does he have daddy issues? Thinking his father was a loser and not wanting to end up like him is textbook stuff.

Does he need a good cry? He needs to purge his soul from all the bottled up stuff.

Flavors: A campy psycho.

Conclusion: Luca’s most iconic character, so of course he scored high on the list.

Paolo (Il padre d’Italia)

Is he repressed? I can’t even start listing all the ways in which he’s repressed.

Flavors: A self-loathing gay orphan in need of some life goodness.

Conclusion: What can I say about Paolo that all of you aren’t already thinking? Decent film, great character, excellent portrayal.

Mickey (Die Pfeiler der Macht)

Is he queer? Undeniably.

Is he repressed? It’s Victorian England, you guys.

Does he have an addiction? He smokes casually but other than that... eh. And don’t tell me he has sex addiction. He uses his body strategically.

Does he have daddy issues? If what he has isn’t daddy issues, I don’t know what is.

Is he violent? He’s got tons of bottled up aggression.

Does he need a good night sleep? It would be great if he could use the day’s darkest hours for sleeping.

Flavors: A conniving slut extraordinaire.

Conclusion: A major player in the book (says me who managed like 50 pages), Mickey Miranda was turned into such a nothing character in the miniseries that they needed a truly extraordinary actor to make him memorable. And guess what, Luca delivered.

Cesare (Non essere cattivo)

Is he queer? Not explicitly, but come on.

Does he have an addiction? He’s an addiction textbook.

Does he have daddy issues? *Jake Peralta voice* Yeah, the guy without a daddy is the one with daddy issues. Explain that logic.

Is he queer? Listen, just because we don’t see him fuck a dude on screen it doesn’t mean he isn’t a motherfluffing queer icon. It’s not subtext; it’s TEXT.

Does he have an addiction? Oh yeah. And a coke nail to prove it.

Does he have daddy issues? I would need a whole separate post to unpack his daddy issues.

Is he violent? So very violent.

Does he need a good night sleep? Yes, please. On an actual bed in an actual bedroom.

Does he need a good cry? You can just tell.

Flavors: A ruthless criminal with a strong mafia boss potential.

Conclusion: The pièce de résistance of the Luca Marinelli filmography. Not only does he tick every box, he gets bonus points for the excellent wardrobe choices that emphasize Luca’s best features. Primo Nizzuto is everything great you want from Luca, except singing. (Though in my headcanon that whole white car in a snowstorm monologue was a musical number.)
