The Dawn of the Age of the Ants
Tumblr media
Sometimes a fossils are like photographs. These ants preserved in the Green River seem like they could come alive and walk right out of the stone.
Most fossils of ants are found in amber, due to their small size, sedimentary fossils must have exceptional fine grain detail to make ants recognizable.
The first image is from University of Colorado collection. https://fossilinsects.colorado.edu/

The second image I've been trying to track down-- I don't know where it is, but it is from Green River.

That first fossil is so beautiful I could cry. Look at her eye! what did she see in the Eocene? This at the dawn of the Age of the Ants... did she know her kind would inherit the whole world?

Do you rate extinct species? Anomalocaris my beloved…
Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the ANOMALOCARIS:
Tumblr media
0/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
0-1/10 Gunk
As a prehistoric shrimp-thing, these guys are mostly exoskeleton, no chunk. I also couldn’t find anything on their slime or mucous secretion, which makes sense since we only have fossils to go off of. I’m left to assume that they were dry little guys. They min-maxed for maximum funk though. Look at this guy. What a creature.
Overall: 7/10
I don’t know a whole lot about fossils since I didn’t have a dinosaur phase. However, I do love a good Cambrian creechur. I want to pat its flat little head.

IT’S OUT! My giant gorgeous book, Bugs, a Skittery Jittety History is out in the world!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kirkus 🌟 review: “Aspiring entomologists, paleontologists, and artists won’t want to miss this one.”
My mother’s review: “wow this is a lot of information, like an entomology 101 class.”
And LOOK at the beautiful art Gordy Wright made for it! It’s even prettier in person.
Anyway if you like bugs, check it out.

An unfortunate biological scheduling conflict occurs on the coast of a Silurian lagoon when Pseudoniscus horseshoe crabs and Eurypterus sea scorpions come to the same beach to mate and spawn. Although they are relatives who share both this behaviour and eyes which lack acuity, but have perfect night vision, the sea scorpions have no qualms about using this accidental meeting to snack on their smaller cousins.

Anyone got any ideas what this was from? Found it washed up at a beach today in South Padre Island, Texas

The lower jaw has one row of molar-like teeth, and the upper jaw has two- I think this is probably the most (if only) really distinctive features I can see, but the texture of the skin(?) on the bottom of the lower jaw should also be visible in picture 5 and that's got a delicate bumpy/sandpapery texture almost like shark skin, which hopefully also helps
Also - please let me know if I should be turning this in to someone, I'm really not sure what the procedure is here. I think it's a fossil or at least partially fossilized but knowing that I usually see them in museums and knowing whether or not this should go join those ranks are two different things lol
Update: has been identified as a (probably agatized) crab claw! Very cool! Thank you to everyone who took a look for me :D

trying to clean out my studio so i am running a little promotion on my Etsy shop! no code needed, I’ll be sending a freebie with every order until I run out - random pick of items, but think samples I’ve made before larger projects, small art pieces, handmade items such as earrings and other things that were a part of my art practice but I have no use for anymore. I have some lace pieces I’ve made, small ornaments and other things you can receive with your purchase! I get to move some items out of my studio, and you get something extra with your order! thanks :) shop here!
