If you hate Aang i hate YOU.What did this lil nigga even do?He was 12,one minute his life was a paradise living with his people happily then the next he got told he had save the world as a CHILD so he got scared and ran away and THEN he was the last survivor of a genocide. And yet despite all this,he went out of his way to show kindness to everybody,to give them hope,to give them strength,to use HIS strength to protect people and he never expected to be rewarded for it as seen by him helping Zuko back when he was evil,he was literally BEING SWEET TO THE GUY TRYING TO KILL HIM because he realized maybe he wasn't all bad and just a kid like him.He was the first person to really see him for who he is after he got banished and he helped him see that too and bring it out in full force.Aang SAVED Zuko's life just like he saved the world and Zuko loves him more than he does anyone else for it and shows it nonstop
He's so different from what he's expected to be-He's so caring and gentle and open with his emotions and goofy and eager to help and innocent and HAPPY.Even after all he's been through,he still finds it so easy to see the good things in life and fill everybody else's existense with even more good things. He's feminine in a positive way instead of being mocked for it and he loves his culture so much and he's so upset about what happened to his people and the reason he decided to be the Avatar for real is that he knows what the Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom were feeling and ain't no way he was going to just let it keep going when he had the exact power created to stop it
He never forced Katara to love him back.He wanted her to and she wore her mutual feelings for him on her sleeve so often that he spotted them and got freaked out and confused when something made him think he was wrong and reacted badly because he was a fucking child. She was a child just like him and he made her feel like one for once since her toddler years and that's why she felt the same things for him he felt for her and why their love perfected the show. She didn't have to water herself down for him and with him she could be the sea itself
Aang had every right to not want to kill Ozai.He wasn't even 13,not even technically a teenager,he was a kid,a good good kid,and he WAS going to stop him no matter what but what of the Air Nomads? What of Gyatso who was the closest thing he ever had to a father? What of everyone else he grew up with that always nurtured him in his-their beautiful culture that wasn't around to keep going anymore? He couldn't let it die like they did.So he worked his ass off to do both and he won.He shared the Air Nomad heritage with Katara as a token of love and did it platonically for everyone else too and despite how EXTREMELY problematic Legend of Korra is,it vindicated him and his people by making Air Nomads exist again. He deserved that and so did they
Aang was a genocide survivor of color.Aang was a child forced to be a hero.Aang wasn't the perfect boyfriend all the time but he wasn't an abuser either.Aang was traumatized and alone in his heritage and despite everything,he was still a good person not out of 'purity' but because he TRIED TO BE EVERY DAY.Talk about him with some fucking respect seeing as he's done more good for his world than you ever have for ours and takes more pride in his culture too.Aang is the perfect role model for kids of color and jewish kids and all the other ones with his experiences.Aang didn't do anything wrong.Just say you hate anyone who's an actual outcast instead of just quirky and then go do some actual activism and direct action like he inspired me to and so did Katara-Which she also played a big part in and i wish she'd done the same for you instead of you insulting her by taking away her entire character on the basis of making her 'a real girl'.I'm talking like i'm better than you because i am and more importantly so is Aang and Katara and Zuko agree

Color Theory in ATLA/LOK: Korrasami Bonus Round
Welcome back to Color Theory in ATLA/LOK! Today’s bonus installment is in honor of the person in the redandbluebracket poll who said “korrasami wear red and blue, but aren’t red/blue coded.” Oh, you dear soul. Please watch the show before you drop such a cold take next time (trust me, you’ll thank me, korrasami are a treasure).
Tumblr media
In case ATLA/LOK’s base color-coding by nation/bending wasn’t enough for you, please read on to see why Korra and Asami are undoubtedly “red/blue coded!”
From ATLA, there is a clear effort by the show’s creators to color-code characters based on their nations of origin. Fire gets red, air gets orange/yellow, water gets blue, and earth gets green. Since Korra is from the Southern Water Tribe, so she wears blue. Asami is the descendant of Fire Nation colonists, so she wears red. Pretty simple, right? But this is only surface level. Admittedly, ATLA’s color coding was a bit more in-your-face than LOK’s. By LOK, the nations have started to intermingle a bit more, so the color coding is more subtle, less obvious, but still there. Color theory is important, or we wouldn't be here. This is tumblr, after all.
Let's start with Korra. Korra has been a talented bender from a young age. She was just a toddler when she showed a propensity for bending more than one element, cementing her identity as the Avatar. As a result, being the Avatar has been a huge part of her identity nearly as long as she can remember. She was raised in a compound in the Southern Water Tribe, isolated from most of the rest of the world as she completed her training. She was raised with the idea that she was destined to be the Avatar, the world’s hero.
Tumblr media
Imagine her surprise when she travels to Republic City, a melting pot of cultures of all four nations, and finds that things aren’t quite hunky dory like she'd imagined. One of her first encounters in the city is with an Equalist, a nonbender demanding equal rights and the end of oppression by benders. Korra has never encountered anything like this before. A person demanding protections against benders? Korra is the Avatar. She’s the bender. She’s never seen bending as a problem. Her identity is being threatened.
What colors represent the equalists? Gray…and red.
From the moment Korra meets Asami, there’s some tension between them. Some of this is because of the (stupid) love triangle between Korra, Asami, and Mako. Asami wears a lot of black, because Republic City is a melting pot, and as a result of this, many of the characters who live here wear more muted colors (Mako and Bolin, for instance, wear gray, with accents in their respective bending colors).
Tumblr media
But Asami also wears red. She’s a nonbender. And later on? Her father is revealed to be supporting the Equalists. Originally, Asami was intended to be an Equalist! But Bryke decided she worked better as an ally than an enemy. Anyway, it just goes to show, as a nonbender represented by the color red, a color also worn by the Equalists, Asami is what Korra could be fighting against. The scene where Hiroshi Sato invites Asami to join him in fighting the benders? Where he holds out the electric glove to her and she takes it?
She could be like them. She could be an enemy.
Tumblr media
But she isn’t.
In the end, she sides with Korra, but if we just want to go based on color theory? The tension was there, undoubtedly. At that moment, Asami was very, very red-coded.
Back to Korra. Her self-identity is wrapped up in being the Avatar, and she is suddenly faced with a world that doesn’t need, and in some cases, outright rejects the Avatar. What is she, then?
In western cultures, blue often represents authority and security. In eastern cultures, it often represents spirituality. Both of these are the essence of the Avatar in ATLA/LOK. With time, Korra’s character arc comes to revolve around what it means to be the Avatar, and, in particular, her spirituality as the Avatar. Blue is featured heavily in both ATLA and LOK in scenes involving spirits and spirituality. Some good examples would be Aang joining with the ocean spirit in the Siege of the North, Aang being represented by blue as he tries to overcome Ozai and remove his bending, the Spirit Portal that Korra opens in season 2, spirit projections being represented as blue, and Raava’s colors being white and blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over time, Korra’s overarching character arc comes to be about finding her place as the Avatar in a world that seems to not need her and becoming the spiritual bridge between worlds. Korra was not a spiritual character in the slightest at the start, so for spirituality and the color blue to be so heavily featured in her character? How can you say she isn’t blue-coded?
In fact, the only time she doesn’t wear blue? It’s during Korra Alone, when she’s undercover in the Earth Kingdom trying to “find herself.” When she’s ready to be the Avatar again, she wears blue.
Tumblr media
Back to Asami. We’ve already talked about how she represented the possibility of being the enemy of season 1, in a way. She acted as the bridge between “the enemy” and “the ally” through her color representation. But what else? Red already has some very strong connotations in both western and eastern cultures.
In western cultures, red is excitement and danger. It can be adversarial. This has been represented already in Asami’s somewhat antagonistic casting as the opposing part of a love triangle and her almost-involvement with the Equalists in season 1.
Tumblr media
But it can also be love. Even as early as the love triangle days, Korra admitted Asami was pretty and elegant. The seeds were there.
Furthermore, in Eastern cultures, red represents luck and happiness. Where is Korra more happy than when she’s faced with a challenge? Asami presents and encourages these challenges for Korra. She offers Korra a chance to learn to drive, something Korra has never done and is eager to try. Where Mako held Korra back and argued with her, Asami supports and encourages her. She doesn’t shy away from Korra’s intensity or warn her she could get hurt. She stands next to her and asks what she can do.
Tumblr media
And their arcs? Mirrored, in a way. While Korra has to learn what in means to be the Avatar, and has to hurt to realize how other people are hurting, Asami practically loses everything. Her company, her father, Korra. While Korra becomes steeped in her blue, Asami becomes steeped in her red.
So, when Korra is at her lowest, she confides in Asami, the only person she feels understands her. The only person who matches and encourages her intensity, her passion, without holding her back. The red to her blue.
No wonder Korra fell for her.
Tumblr media
That’s it for now. I hope you’re enjoying these so far! I’m obsessed with colors, and I’m sorry (no I’m not).

Magic!ANON Lin Beifong has been turned into a toddler and Tenzin has to watch her until she can be turned back.
Their arrival on Air Temple Island was heard before it was seen. Tenzin landed from his glider and marched right up to the officer, anger evident in his voice as he shouted over the screaming little girl that Saikhan dragged along with him.
"What are you doing to that child!?"
A young girl of about four or five years old screamed in frustration as she struggled to free herself from the grip that Saikhan had on her arm. "Big fat ugly meanie! Let me go!" She shouted as she used the whole weight of her body to try and pull away.
"Tenzin, something shot out of the spirit portal and went right through Beifong. This is her." He gestured to the child who was now stomping on his feet and biting at the metal of his uniform. "It was incredible. About eight of us saw her shrink down, and this is all that was left over."
"What?!"
Tenzin leaned down to get a better look at the girl and saw her dark hair and familiar pale green eyes. "Lin?"
She growled at him sent some nearby fist-sized rocks flying at his face. He easily ducked under them, their movements too slow to be a threat. Apparently her bending prowess had diminished as well as her age.
"Korra and Jinora are already helping us try to figure out how to fix this, but Tenzin..." he hesitated.
The airbending master stood fully. "Out with it, Saikhan."
"We can't keep her at the station any longer. She's already figured out the basics of metalbending, and she's wreaking havoc on the unit's concentration to figure this out. I can't trust any old daycare to take her, she bullied my children and nearly destroyed my house. I can't leave her unsupervised. Will you watch her until we find a way to change her back?"
Lin's small fist pounded into the man's metal sleeve, leaving tiny dents behind. "LET! ME! GO!"
Tenzin got down on a knee to be at eye level with her. "Hello," he said gently. "My name is Tenzin." Lin turned her angry eyes on him. "Would you like to stay on the island for a little while?"
"No! I want to go home!" She shouted.
Tenzin's concerned eyes flicked up to Saikhan and back to Lin. "Where is home?"
"I-- I--" Her struggle fizzled out to weak pulls. "I don't know but I'll find it!" Tears filled her defiant eyes.
He knew from being a father that sometimes it was best to distract children away from their big emotions. Tenzin put a warm smile on his face. "If you want to stay here, I have two daughters who love to make new friends and a son your age who likes fart jokes." Lin's bottom lip pushed her top one up into a frown. "I'll tell Meelo to hold off on the fart jokes," he quickly amended.
"Daddy, daddy!" Ikki yelled as she rode her air scooter down the hill towards them. "You'll never guess what kind of rock I found. Look at it! It's pink and white and when I lick it and hold it up in the sun you can see a rainbow. Auntie Kya loves rainbows." She dismounted from her scooter and leaned in close to Lin. "Hello! I'm Ikki, welcome to Air Temple Island! Would you like to know how many trees there are? What's your name?"
Lin stared at Ikki blankly. "Ikki," Tenzin said, "this is Lin. She might be staying with us for a little while if she wants to."
"Oh! I have an Auntie named Lin!" Ikki jumped up and down and clapped her hands rapidly. "She's the coolest. She can bend metal and has cool face scars and she's even my dad's ex-girlfriend but he doesn't like to talk about it. Have you ever seen a sky bison before?"
Young Lin was completely baffled by the child before her. Her struggle against Saikhan had ceased. Tenzin offered out his hand. "Would you like to see a sky bison?"
Curious pale green eyes looked up at him and she nodded. Her small hand reached out and grasped at his fingers. Tenzin nodded for Saikhan to let her go. He led the two children up to the bison stables for their first activity of the day.

“So what was your first element?” Kuvira asked suddenly.
“My first element?” Korra repeated.
“The first one you bent,” Kuvira clarified. “I remember you mentioning once that air was your last, but I’ve always wondered which was your first.”
Korra hummed to herself thoughtfully. Her fingers kept moving, slowing combing their way through Kuvira’s hair, gently scratching her scalp. Kuvira seemed to relax more and more with every stroke.
“It was kind of a tie, to be honest,” Korra said eventually. “But the first was fire. Which was a pretty big surprise for my parents, as you can imagine. The next day I bent water, which is why it’s kind of a tie. I accidentally turned my bath water to ice by sneezing.”
“That must’ve been a shock,” Kuvira chuckled.
“Oh, it was,” Korra agreed, grinning. “They actually managed to convince themselves that my firebending had been a coincidence too. Until I bent earth for the first time a week later. I think I had just turned four when I started bending all three elements fairly regularly.”
“I’ve always heard that raising a toddler could be challenging,” Kuvira said, sounding slightly sleepy. “But a toddler who can bend three elements? That must’ve really kept them on their toes.”
“Oh, definitely,” Korra laughed. She looked down to see that Kuvira’s eyes had closed. She looked so peaceful like this, sprawled out on the grass with her head in Korra’s lap. “Falling asleep on me, Captain?”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Kuvira replied, smiling softly. “I’m just resting my eyes.”
A brief snippet from my writing.

Do you guys think that when the Avatar dies and it’s announced, the nation who expects the next avatar has some sort of baby boom? Is the avatar soul connected to a child born the same day the former dies, or does it take the 9 months for the next avatar to be born? Does raava know who they want to choose for the avatar, or is it a lottery for them too?
I know they don’t really find the avatar until they’re a little older and can do the test (like toddler age based off TLoK), but it’s kind of a good reason for someone to even try for a kid. How many fake or hopeful, naive parents claim they had the avatar? What’s the benefit of lying you parenting the avatar if it’s so easy to prove them wrong????
Is it even announced when the avatar dies or does the white lotus (or whatever organization looks for the avatar pre-Aang) keep it a secret so theirs no conflict??? Was there a baby boom in the water tribe after Aang went missing? The southern water tribe definitely had a boom before Korra (however, it may have been northern WT people migrating south, or the south was a scattered nation and got a chance to grow and unite). How many water benders died during the hundred year war because the fire nation thought Aang died and a new avatar was born?
I hope the next avatar series goes into that because I have so many questions about the times between Avatars and the logistics

on Korra having a problem with air bending not fire bending and a bit of extra
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the lion turtles giving bending to humanity doesn't take away the idea that spirituality/mentality is important when ti comes to bending ( and the idea that you shouldn't be able to punch and throw some bending like air is wrong it doesn't take away from the idea that mentality is important to fully expand on the element or that chakra's are closed ( saw some people claiming that the first avatar just punching and using fire when he got it somehow takes away from the spirituality when there was nothing about the first avatar's mentality that would go against fire bending or cause him to not be able to use it . )
plus bending styles were obtained watching nature like how monkey Kung Fu was developed by watching monkey's lion turtles reveal doesnt take anything away from the spirituality of bending
korra bending as a toddler doesn't make her a Mary sue ( kids are shown bending all the time there was never a hard limit to when an avatar would be able to access the other elements I mean aang was 12 during atla while avatar's usually only learn they are the avatar when they are older ) aang could have used the other bending styles earlier if he just tried to
the claim that Korra or mako were Mary/Gary stu's were always idiotic and reliant on thinking either well something that happened with aang had to be the same with Korra or due to outright having an irrational hate for a character being flawed and those flaws appearing in a way they don't like and convinced themselves that mako is somehow a monster for mishandling a love triangle. ( like people who tried to equate him to yue's fiance) his emotional conflict involving love triangle relates to security
"Mako, of course, was so far from safe that most of the fandom misunderstood him as a monster.  Basing a male character’s romantic issues on his internal conflict between stability and change isn’t standard; if it was, the fandom would have probably figured out what was actually going on instead of just accusing him of being a cheater."

Why do you say neither Zuko nor Azula are evil despite the bad things they both do? They may both be young, but they're not toddlers. What's the line between "being evil" and "not being evil despite doing bad things"? Do you think characters like Ozai, Iroh, or Hama, are evil? Do you think Kuvira was evil? Kuvira may be older than Azula, but I don't think the writers of Korra intended for the audience to see Kuvira as an evil person, at least not more evil than Azula.
For one, I want you to understand that the idea of evil as an essentialist quality is already not a universally agreed upon philosophy. This can be hard to grasp since the influence of Abrahamic religions on Western culture, which do espouse a philosophy of extremes and essentialist good and evil, may make it difficult to even fathom there are other schools of thought.
But Avatar is influenced by Eastern philosophies and religions that believe in morality of moderation (seeking “balance”) rather than essentialist evil qualities. And while ATLA certainly has its share of western values due to its origin and the audience it was written for, they do go out of their way to make it clear that this show doesn’t believe in evil as an essentialist quality.
Aang outright says it. No one is born evil - Not even the Fire Nation. Inside of us all is the capability for great good and great evil. And we all deserve a chance.
Zuko and Azula are both abused, exploited, brainwashed children. Expecting them to have automatically grasped that their culture was in the wrong when even Iroh didn’t figure it out until he was a grown adult and was affected by the war personally is an unfair request.
Imagine if you’re struggling to understand my position on evil as not being an essentialist quality due to your own beliefs and understanding of the world informed by your culture. If it’s difficult for you, who presumably didn’t grow up in an authoritarian society that lied to you about what right and wrong were, and you have access to the internet and other points of view, how much harder would it be for children brainwashed from birth and with no other POVs around to tell them otherwise?
