"Younghoon!" You grumbled as you watched him keep walking ahead of you with his focus solely on his smartphone.
"Hey, wait for me!" You ran to catch up with his fast pace.
"We're in the same tutoring center, why didn't you wait for me?" You asked in an annoyed tone.
But you only got a flat glance from Younghoon.
"Oh, hi (Name), hi Younghoon!"
Someone greeted, making you and Younghoon look back. It was Kim Chiyeol.
You cheerfully returned his greeting. "Hi, Kimchi!"
"Did ... your exam go well?"
You realized that Chiyeol was asking Younghoon that. But since there was no reply from him, you quickly responded. "I thought the exam was quite difficult, but maybe for Younghoon it was easy, like the practice questions he does everyday. Am I right, Younghoon?" You said as you gently nudged his shoulder.
Younghoon just gave you a flat look.
It wasn't long before the bus to the tutoring center arrived. Younghoon immediately entered the bus without intending to say goodbye first.
You grimaced awkwardly at Chiyeol, "Then I'll go first, see you tomorrow Kimchi!" You said.
"Ah, okay. Take care!"
Once you entered the bus, you looked at Younghoon who was sitting by the window. Then you casually walked over and sat on the empty seat next to him.
You heard a sigh from that man. "Can't you sit somewhere else?" said Younghoon without looking at you.
You smiled and shook your head. "I can't, the other seat is full."
You were obviously lying, because Younghoon had seen some empty seats when he boarded the bus earlier. However, he chose to keep quiet until you all reached the tutoring center.
When the bus stopped, you hurriedly got off the bus. Then stood by the bus door waiting for Younghoon to come out. As soon as he appeared, you smiled and invited him to enter the tutoring center together. But Younghoon just stayed where he was. You looked at him confused.
"Why are you just standing there? Let's go in, the class is starting soon," You said.
"I'm going to get a drink, you go in first."
Younghoon's words in a fairly soft tone managed to keep you frozen. Feeling a little surprised by his intonation that was somewhat different from the usual.
"Okay, hurry up and catch up."
Unbeknownst to you, Younghoon intended to skip class today. He just said he wanted to buy a drink so you wouldn't follow him.
Younghoon walked away from the building and went to an internet cafe.

"Can you teach me about this material?" You looked up at Soocheol. He smiled sweetly at you, not forgetting a textbook with math problems in his hand.
"Let me see."
Immediately that boy occupies the empty seat in front of you. Then gave you the book to look at.
You nodded slightly as you read the problem, "The method is, first you multiply this number by this one, then add them up. After that, substitute it into the equation," You explained.
Soocheol was seen nodding his head. "Wow, it was so easy. Thank you!" he said happily.
"No problem."
Too happy to finally understand the question, Soocheol who wanted to go back to his seat took a time to ruffle your hair. You, who were surprised to get such treatment, could only stand stiffly. You hope that no one saw what happened just now.
But, all those things did not escape Younghoon's sight. He had been glancing at you from his seat. Without realizing it, his hand was firmly pressed against the edge of the book he was reading.

"Jang Younghoon! Why are you avoiding me?" You stare wearily at this man. At lunchtime, you wanted to invite him to eat together in the cafeteria. But before you could speak, he got up from his seat and left the classroom.
Now you catch up with him walking towards the gym instead of the cafeteria. You shake off your confusion and choose to ask the question that has been on your mind since yesterday.
"Why didn't you have lessons yesterday? Where did you go?" You asked, finally feeling a little relieved to be able to say that.
"None of your business."
"Hey, it's definitely one of my business. What am I going to answer if your mom ask me?" You retorted.
Younghoon give you a disapproving glance. "Stop meddling in other people's business."
"Hey! It's my concern as your friend, you know?" You replied with an annoyed chuckle.
You couldn't help but feel irritated by the snide reply from your mom's best friend's son.
Without warning, Younghoon stepped closer to you with his sharp gaze. "Then stop caring about me, because I never considered you as a friend."
You were frozen on the spot. Never really felt this pain in your chest when Younghoon shot back at you with his cynical words.
"So annoying."
After that, Younghoon walked back out leaving you that still rooted in your spot.

Four weeks pass slowly. You stare at the signed parental consent paper in your hand. You sigh before finally getting out of the car and dragging your suitcase into the school area.
Your eyes looked around the school. In front of the entrance gate, there were some soldiers standing guard. Now in the corridor, you see the final year students chatting with their friends or some who just arrived with a big bag or suitcase like you.
"Morning, (Name)! Are you coming too?" Yoojung, the class president, greets you. You smiled back at her and gave a small nod, then walked towards your seat in front of Aeseol.
"Morning, Aeseol," you greeted.
Aeseol smiles at you. "Good morning, (Name)."
While looking around the classroom, your eyes accidentally crossed with Younghoon who was sitting in his seat. You snorted softly and quickly looked away.
Meanwhile, Younghoon, who had been watching you from the start, quietly sighed.
At first, Younghoon was relieved that you were no longer bothering him by pretending to be close. He feels that his day become quieter without anyone to talk to. However, deep down, he felt lonely. Younghoon wants to deny that he misses you from making his day less monotonous.
Younghoon also realized that you've always been kind and friendly to him, even though he always replied flatly or uncaringly. That warm attitude of yours, he really missed it.
Younghoon regretted it.

"As soon as you are given a weapon, shout out your name and serial number!"
You, who are in the back row, can only peek while tiptoeing forward. In front of you was the figure of Jangsoo's pole, making it difficult for you to see your friends who were being given weapons in front of the row.
Younghoon, who was right behind you, tried to hide his smile. "Be patient, you'll get one too."
Hearing that voice made you turn your head. You stared in surprise at Younghoon who had just spoken. You had no idea he had been behind you all along.
But you tried to neutralize your facial expressions and faced forward again.
Younghoon looked at your back sadly. He hoped that by talking to you, he might be able to get you to return to your old behavior. But, hope is just hope.
You no longer made any effort to peek ahead, just stood still and took a few steps forward when told to until you finally got your share of the firearms.
"Thank you, sir."
After mentioning your identity and the serial number of the weapon, you instantly turned around and walked out of the line. You walk towards your classmates who are gathered on the sidelines.
"Wow, this is really cool. Just like in the game!" You said after sitting next to Yoojung.
"Have you ever played a game?" asked Jangsoo who was in Yoojung's right side.
You gave Jangsoo an annoyed look, " Of course I have! Don't underestimate me!" you retorted.
"I thought you were just playing a cooking game or a brain teaser quiz." Youngshin, who was sitting behind you commented.
You rolled your eyes lazily. "Never mind, I'm done with you guys."
Both boys laughed as they watched you get up and move away from the crowd of classmates.
Younghoon who wanted to come to you after getting a weapon, immediately sat down next to you. You just glanced at him without interest.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
"None of your business."
Of all your friends, why did it have to be this man who approached you. You're still upset about what he said the other day. But you couldn't shake your worry once you realized that there were cuts in several corners of his face. It must be because of his fight with Ilha yesterday.
"I didn't know you liked fighting."
You silently curse your lips for saying that. But, what's happened is happens. You shook off your pride and looked at Younghoon, waiting for his reply.
Younghoon turned to you. "He's gone too far, he should be taught a lesson once in a while."
You unconsciously chuckled. For some reason, you felt funny about Younghoon's answer. It feels very strange, considering Younghoon who only cares about lessons could say such a thing. It seemed like he was completely fed up with Ilha's attitude.
"Are you laughing?" said Younghoon in surprise.
You cleared your throat and shook your head. You quickly grabbed the bandage you carried in your uniform pocket and handed it to Younghoon.
"For your wound," you said as Younghoon looks at the bandage and your face in turn.
"Thanks."
Your heart raced as you caught the faint smile on his face. It's an expression Younghoon rarely shows.
You feel that since you silenced him a few week ago, he has started to change his attitude towards you. He sometimes invites you to talk first, or when you have trouble answering the questions on the board, he offers to help.
Yeah, you know he probably does that to improve his grades, not to help you. That's why you shouldn't be too confident. But, you also can't deny that you feel good about it. It's as if your struggle to get close to Younghoon is now paying off.
"Can you put it on for me?"
You blinked a few times. Younghoon was still looking at you with his hand thrusting the plaster towards you.
"Ekhm, y-yeah. Let me put it on."
Your heart skipped a beat, especially when you leaned closer to Younghoon to apply the plaster to the wound on his face. "Done."
"(Name),"
You held your breath, surprised by Younghoon that suddenly holding your hand.
"Forgive me, for what I said before."
That man was still focusing his attention on you. You could see the guilty look in his eyes.
Prit!!!!
"HEY! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING?! GET TOGETHER RIGHT NOW!"
You suddenly let go of Younghoon's grip. Then move towards the Platoon Commander who just called out.
Meanwhile, Younghoon stared flatly at Lieutenant Lee. He had yet to receive an apologetic reply from you, even though he had tried his best to remove all his prestige just to apologize to you.

NBC commissioned artist James Bama, most famous for his nearly 200 Doc Savage paperback covers, to create this Star Trek art.
NBC was originally going to sell the art as a poster, but instead used it in promotional and advertising material. The words "Star Trek" were painted on a transparency, so they could be removed or repositioned as needed.
The most famous use of this art is as the cover of the first volume of science fiction author James Blish's short story adaptations of Star Trek episodes.
Bama used photo references from the second Star Trek pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before, for his painting. Obviously, he did not see any footage from the episode of the Enterprise in flight, hence the rocket exhaust. Why no one at NBC corrected him on this is unknown, although, I suspect, no one at the network knew themselves or cared.

@zukkaonthebrain here's part of the draft of that pirate fic i mentioned lol. Judge for yourself if it's any good.
Four years ago, had you told Hama of the Southern Water Tribe that she would be dreading returning home, she most likely would have boiled your blood. And yet, here she was. Savouring the cold, arctic air from the comfort of the Fire Navy ship she had grown to call home for the last 3 years.
- Feeling nostalgic?- she didn't have to turn around to recognise lieutenant Jee's voice at her side. She had to crane her head to look up into his stern face. He said nothing more, hands still clasped behind his back, regal like the naval officer he once was.
- Perhaps. - she finally answered, looking back into the cold, barren, yet homely snowy wastes.- It's been so long. I don't think anyone would remember me as anything but a cautionary tale.- she shivered a little. Her bones were old and now used to the warmth of the fire nation or the sunkissed deck, after all.
But it still felt as if she had betrayed her homeland.
Jee, ever the gentleman, placed a shawl over her shoulders. The crew had amassed a staggering amount of blankets and furs over the years. All different colours, from various places. On warm nights they would sometimes lay them out on the deck and sleep under the stars.
Today was not warm.
- It's been so long since I've seen these waters. I believe everyone's most likely forgotten me. - she repeated quietly. She flicked her wrist and a trail of water sprung upwards to her command. As if she had to remind herself who she was. Hama of the Southern Water Tribe. Not Hama of the Fire Nation. And certainly not Hama of the Umihebi. Certainly not.
This was always the plan. This had always been the plan. Ever since she was confronted by an eleven year old princess Azula, demanding transport in exchange for amnesty.
----+
The full moon was the only light she needed. She had almost managed to corral old man Ding into the mountain. The man was a nuisance in the village, always loud and brash and had occasionally stormed into her inn already heavily drunk and demanded another bottle of wine. She took great pleasure in pupeteering his blood.
She had just about forced him into the cave when the bushes rustled behind her. Concentration broken, she whiped around just in time to see a flash of red disappearing behind the leaves and hear a tiny squeak.
Oh great. More than 30 years of secrecy out of the window in just 5 seconds. She vaguely heard Ding's footsteps as he sprinted back down towards the village. So goes her success streak.
- I can see you.- she snarled, summoning an ice spike to her hands. - You'd best come out of there before I make you.-
This was no idle threat. Despite the moon waning, she had more than enough time to easily kill whoever had ruined her plans.
There was shuffling and what Hama did not expect was for 3 children to emerge from the brush. Little girls, about 11 if she were to guess. Dressed in noble's clothes, but slightly dirty and dishevelled.
The one in the front held her head high, looking down her nose at Hama. -Waterbender. I am princess Azula, daughter of the Firelord and I have just caught you committing a crime.- those were the last words Hama expected to hear out of her mouth. - However. - the tiny princess continued. -I am in need of assistance and if you prove useful, I offer to pardon your crime. -
- And what if i don't help you, little one?- Hama bit out. This was the grandchild of the man who ruined her life. This was the blood of the family that brought her to this hell, that killed her brothers and sisters, that left her to rot in a dungeon. - What if I kill you right now?-
The princess looked unaffected, as did the stonefaced pale girl behind her. The one wearing pink at least had the decency to squeak and hide behind her companions.
- Then i shall simply defeat you in combat and hand you over to the proper authorities. Or kill you, if you force my hand.- Honestly, the gall of this child. The princess continued, boldfaced in the face of potential bloodbending. - My frien... My companions and I are travelling to the port in East Kidaro. Unfortunately, our transport has become... incapacitated. -
- She means our mongoose lizard ran away.- deadpanned the other girl, who had the audacity to look bored. Princess Azula glared at her, before turning back towards Hama.
- Threrefore. We require your assistance. - the little girl finished. As she stopped talking, her entire body sagged a little, as if she were just putting on a performance.
Spirits. Hama's head was spinning. She could probably wipe the floor with these kids. Probably. The princess's confidence was unnerving to say the least. But did she have it in her to kill three 11 year olds all at once? Perhaps. But for her own sanity she'd rather not think so.
- So. What is your decision?- The little royal put her hands on her hips. Hama sighed. The moose dragon carriages were leaving soon, she had enough money and time and she'd rather not kill a bunch of children so why not?
- Fine. - she muttered, the ice spike melting and clattering to her feet in a puddle. She turned, motioning for the kids to follow her.
It was only once they were on the carriage, halfway there, that Hama thought to ask.
- Why would you be travelling to East Kidaro, anyway?-
The girls all flinched, as if she had just slapped them all simultaneously. The princess glared at her tiny hands balled into fists in her lap.
- I have a ship to catch.- she bit out. - If you must know.-
----+
- There's always time to reacquaint yourself with your people.- Jee gently pulled her out of her musings. - I'm sure they will be ecstatic to have you back. -
He tried to smile reassuringly, but his attention was immediately drawn by Hotaru, their resident navigator and helmsman (and amateur scholar), yelling something about map discrepancies. With one last reassuring squeeze of her shoulder, Jee rushed towards the conning tower.
With no other thing to catch her interest, Hama turned her attention to the two young royals training, a pleasant heat emanating from them. When she first boarded the ship, she had flinched away from the benders, but soon she grew used to it.
It probably helped that she had taught them to assimilate some waterbending techniques into their skillset. She had no waterbenders to pass her knowledge down to, she might as well teach someone.
Even right now, the two were doing the fire version of streaming the water, passing a ribbon of flames between each other with a fluidity one would seldom see among their kind.
Hama couldn't help the pride that swelled in her chest. They may not be the waterbending students she had dreamed of, but they were her students.
Once she saw fire only as destruction and pain, but she had since come around to it's beauty.
One could not help but admire how the golden-red flames turned a cold blue as they left Zuko's vicinity and swirled around Azula, only to warm in colour again as the prince summoned them back.
Azula caught Hama's eye, and inclined her head with an impish smile. Zuko had yet to notice her, but Hama did not hold it against him.
She was in his blind spot, after all. Despite her incredible, if she does say so herself, healing prowess, Hama had been unable to save the sight in the boy's left eye.
Yes, Hama thought bitterly, as she eyed the angry red scar, there was still much destruction and pain left in fire.
----+
To say Hama was lost the first time she boarded the Umihebi would be an understatement. The ship was small, ridiculously small, but still it made her feel even smaller. The metal under her feet. The sound of the engine running. The smell of smoke. Bile rose in the back of her throat. She could almost feel the phantom imprints of cuffs around her wrists.
Of course, princess Azula strutted around like she owned the place, because technically she did. She marched right up to the surly greybearded soldier who stood at the helm.
- Where are my brother and uncle, lieutenant?- she demanded, hands neatly folded in front of her. The man looked down at her, raising a bushy eyebrow. Azula tapped her foot. The man cleared his throat.
- The prince has yet to awaken, princess. - he choked out. - He is currently in his quarters being attended to by our medic. The general is with him. -
- Very well. You will take me there. - the little tyrant demanded. The lieutenant sputtered a bit in indignation, but folded quickly under the piercing amber gaze. He stiffly motioned for them to follow.
Once Hama had been dragged, kicking and screaming down halls like these. Now she was following the princess of the fire nation through them, like a dog. She could at least chuckle at the irony.
She mulled over the lieutenant's words in her head. The prince had not awoken. Hama had heard of the Agni Kai and the boy's banishment. Everyone had heard. But was the burn so severe? She could not imagine a father, even as cruel as the Firelord, hurting his child in any meaningful way. Surely the burn was not that serious. Surely.
They reached the metal door and the man hesitated. He looked back down at the princess, and her young companions. A look of pity crossed his face as he placed a steadying hand on Azula's shoulder.
- Your highness. We're here. - he said quietly -I must warn you... It's not pretty. Not a sight for children. No one would think differently of you if you waited a little to see your brother. -
For a moment the little girl seemed to hesitate, before her face once again gained its signature look of superiority.
- That will be all, lieutenant. - she said, shrugging his hand off her shoulder. - You may return to your post. -
The man stiffened again, saluted and left wordlessly, jaw only slightly agape. Meanwhile the princess confidently opened the door, and marched into the room, her friends funnelling in after her. Hama stayed outside, giving them at least a little bit of privacy.
Not ten seconds later she was nearly barrelled over by the little pink one, who sprinted out of the room, tears in her eyes and hands over her mouth. The girl rushed to the deck, nearly colliding with a wall on her way there.
Well now Hama was curious. She carefully peaked into the room. Right at the entrance stood the princess's other friend, still as a statue. The tiny royal herself was standing next to an older gentleman, another noble by the looks of him.
There indeed was a healer, a young man with spectacles, whos darker skin implied he originated from the colonies. The lad was kneeling next to a mattress on the floor, applying an ointment to the face of the small figure that lay there.
Applying an oily, greasy ointment. To a fresh burn.
- What the fuck are you doing?- she demanded, long dormant healer's instincts kicking in. She brushed past the quiet girl, stomping up to the mattress. - Do you WANT to give him an infection?!-
The healer jumped, dropping the jar of ointment. Hama sat at the mattress, assessing the kid's wound. Spirits. Half the boy's face was covered by a nasty burn. It looked awful, but she steeled herself. She could think about it later. Since no one had yet tackled her, she assumed she was free to continue her examination.
There was a bucket of water. She checked its temperature. Ice cold. Tui and La, it was like they were trying to kill the boy. She passed the bucket to the, for once stunned, princess Azula.
- Heat it up. Not hot. Lukewarm. - the little girl sputtered a bit, and the older noble took pity on her. He gently pulled the bucket from her shaking hands. Soon Hama felt a sliver of heat emanating from him. She turned to the healer. The poor man looked so lost and maybe Hama would have felt bad for him if he weren't just about to commit medical malpractice.
- What kind of healer are you? You don't even know how to treat a Spirits damned burn !-
- I'm uh, actually supposed to be the navigator. - the young man stuttered out.
- Then where is the fucking healer?-
- We don't have anyone else. I was given some first aid training and dispatched here..-
- Well, you're just making things worse. Get out. Out I say! - she shooed the man away and he dragged himself out of the cabin, metaphorical tail between his legs. Hama turned to the old man.
- How is that water coming along?- he simply passed her the bucket. She checked the temperature again. Acceptable.
She paused. This would usually be the moment she would start waterbending. But she didn't fancy getting set on fire. Sure, the princess knew what she was, but the old man...
Oh fuck it. She wasn't about to let a 13 year old die on her watch, if she was worth her salt as a healer. She quickly drew the water out of the bucket. The old man took a rather loud breath, but other then that did not react.
Emboldened, Hama gently led the water to the boy's little face. She let the liquid settle on the mangled flesh, charred skin and frayed nerve endings. Then she reached inside of herself, for the power she had been hiding for so long.
The water began to glow faintly and Hama felt a sense of peace she forgot she could feel. It was almost like she was young again. Back when there was a lull in the fighting and they could actually tend to their wounded.
Her hands trembled a little bit.
Why was she even doing this? She didn't care if a member of the royal family died. She might even rejoice at the news.
But the boy was so small and pale, and the burn was so horrific and apparently inflicted by his father, and he was trembling and sweating and bleeding and he wouldn't survive the night without her... And he was just a child.
So she kept at it. She focused on the wound, daring not turn to face the two other royals. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the princess's other friend, still motionless and looking a little green in the face. Poor kid.
As if sensing Hama's thoughts, the old noble cleared his throat. - Mai, was it? - the girl gave a little nod -Perhaps you should go make sure your friend is doing alright.- she nodded and stiffly turned around, silently stepping out of the room.
There was a second or two of silence before the man spoke again. - Princess Azula, you have yet to introduce me to your friend. -
- Hm? - the little girl mumbled, as if startled out of her thoughts, Hama felt the mattress dip as the Azula sat down at her brother's feet. - This is Hama. We requested her assistance in the journey here and she obliged. In exchange she is to be exonerated of her past crimes. -
- Hmmm.- Hama could practically imagine him stroking his beard. - It is a good thing that you did. I do not wish to think of what would have happened had you not. Thank you.-
Hama grunted, waving a hand, before returning to her work. She wasn't doing this for THEM. She was doing this just because it would insult her status as a master waterbender and healer if she were to let a child die on her watch. That's the ONLY reason.
For a long time after that there was silence, save for the soft hum of the water's healing process. It had probably been at least an hour before Hama was satisfied with her work.
The burn had begun healing over the edges. It would take more work for it to fully heal, and of course it would leave an awful scar, but the boy would live. Looking down at his face he seemed more peaceful too. She felt good about that
She straightened her back, wiping the sweat off her forehead. Spirits, her spine was killing her. Finally she let herself take her surroundings in. The princess had fallen asleep, curled up at her brother's feet like a polar bear dog puppy. The old man sat in his chair, watching Hama intently.
- Thank you.- he said quietly, bowing his head. Hama didn't know what to say, so she just pretended to be checking on the prince's wound again.
- I hear my niece offered you a pardon for your services. Understand that things do not work like that.- Ah well, this was what Hama was afraid of. Serves her right for listening to a fucking eleven year old. At least she could take three fourths of the royal family hostage. But the man she now recognised as prince Iroh continued.
- But, should I employ you as the official healer of the Umihebi, you would be safer. The Crown often exonerates criminals who join the army. After your services are no longer required we will set you off at a port of your choosing and you will be free to go. - he smiled reassuringly and extended his hand.
-Do we have a deal?-

I just spent so many days rereading all of this story and all other stories by @scumtrout and ¡HOLY! ¡SHiT! 😱😱😱
This fic literally resuscitated me and dragged me back into the depths of Fandom after 8 whole years 😭😂🥲😂 I haven't stopped thinking about it in weeks. I love every single character.
Some things might not exactly match the hinterland canon (lol) but this is how I played things in my head
Might clean this up and add colors at some point in the far future

Some days after watching Halloween 2018 I watched Columbo and I noticed something. Same floor pattern!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, these are two diffirent places but it would be fun if it was one and same place, right? Columbo and Halloween crossover... I remind that Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie) and Donald Pleasence (dr. Loomis) appered in Columbo series already (Donald as a murderer).

"Ouch! Did you hurt me on purpose?"
You hissed lightly at the man in front of you. Then continued your activity of applying medicine to the wound on his face.
"Shh, slow down."
That man—Kwon Ilha— said, and stopped your hand movement. He looked at you with a stare that was hard to interpret.
Feeling the unpleasant air around you, you cleared your throat softly. "So, don't be a tough guy," you said, pretending to be angry.
Ilha lets out a long sigh, he has no intention of releasing your hand from his grip. Instead, he plays along with your fingers.
"He's such a jerk! I can't keep quiet." he said.
You just shook your head in wonder. You don't know what kind of grudge Ilha has with the Ranking One in your class.
Even earlier, after Mrs. Park's shocking announcement about military training, Ilha had a fight with Younghoon that resulted in scars on several parts of his face.
"Never mind, there's no need to think about him. Why do you care so much about Younghoon?" you said as you pull your hand out of Ilha's grasp to organize the medicine box.
"Are you crazy?! I don't care about that bastard!" he argued.
"Okay, then. If you don't care, then don't bother him. You should have approached him so you could get smarter like him, instead of engaging in fight."
"Nope, not a chance!"
You chuckle secretly, feeling that the attitude of this man who always looks fierce at school seems funny.
"Alright, get some rest. Give my regards to your mother, I'm going home."
You got up from the chair in the living room of his home. After slinging your backpack over your shoulder, you head out.
"I'll take you home," Ilha said, following you.
"No need, I can go by myself."
"I didn't ask."
You gave him a lazy look. Stubborn Ilha. The boy who likes to be on his own. He who doesn't like to listen to others. After all, he was your best friend since childhood.
Behind his stubbornness, you know that there is a soft side to you. Ilha who likes to be on his own, is the same Ilha who will take care of you without being asked. The Ilha who doesn't like to listen to others, is the same Ilha who always provides his ears to listen to your stories.
"Why are you standing still? Don't you want to go home?"
As soon as you realized that you had been daydream, you instantly caught up with Ilha who was already walking.

"Ilha, are you coming?"
You laughed at the man's sour face.
He had confidently said yesterday that he would not participate in this military training activity. But look at it now, there's a suitcase next to his seat. You laugh even more at Ilha's annoyed expression.
"My mom forced me to go, she said I'd just be lazy at home," he said.
"Well, I totally agree with Aunt Kwon." You playfully ruffle Ilha's hair, making him give you a fierce look.
Look, how can a guy who often makes other students dare not approach him —for fear of being bullied— be this adorable?
"Hey, it's still early in the morning but you guys are already being flirtatious like that!"
"I wonder, how can (Name) always stare so fondly at Ilha."
"What's so attractive about that guy?"
The astonished remarks were heard from Heerak, Hana, and Bora. You don't mind with their reactions. You return to your seat when Mrs. Park enters the classroom with a soldier.
"Salute. I'm Lieutenant Lee Chun Ho. I will be the 2nd Platoon Commander. Nice to meet you."
You stare unblinkingly at the soldier's figure. His aura really makes you feel hypnotized.
Meanwhile, Ilha who realized you were being mesmerized by Lieutenant Lee, could only glance sarcastically.
"Is there anyone who wants to be a clerk?"
Because you're enjoying the beautiful scenery in front of the class, you don't listen to Mrs. Park or Lieutenant Lee. Don't even realize that almost all of your friends are avoiding Lieutenant Lee's gaze.
"You're in the back," Lieutenant Lee's gaze suddenly falls on you.
You just blinked, too surprised to suddenly become the attention of the whole class.
"Me? Why, sir?" You ask confused, also trying to hide your blush in your cheeks from being stared at directly by Lieutenant Lee.
"You're going to be a clerk whose job it's to record the training and documentation of the member of Second Platoon to send to the parents. You don't mind, do you?" he said in a tone that sounds like an order.
You're so nervous that you can only nod slowly and ignore the mocking laughter from your classmates.
"Alright, three bonus points will be given to the clerk and the senior enlisted."
Immediately, a groan of disapproval could be heard from your classmates. They felt jealous that you and Yoojung —who were appointed as Senior Enlisted— were getting extra points.
"Huh, now you guys regret laughing at me?" You said with a satisfied laugh.
-------------------------
"Hey, hey, hold on! Give me 2 seconds!"
After that shout, you see Taeman running and are immediately chased by Ilha and others while pointing their guns, pretending to shoot Taeman.
You just shook your head and laughed. You actually wanted to play chase like them, but you were too lazy especially in this hot weather.
"Hey, stop playing around and get over here!"
Until a shout from one of the male soldier was heard. But, Ilha, Taeman, Bora, Hana, and Heerak were still having fun and didn't care.
Prit!!!
"What are you guys doing?! Hurry up and gather! NOW!"
Another shout makes you gasp in surprise. However, it also managed to make Ilha and others who had been playing chase stop instantly.
Lieutenant Lee, who had just shouted angrily, quickly approached Ilha and grabbed the weapon in his hand roughly. Then he gave a lecture to all the students of class 12-2 or what was now called Platoon 2 about not playing with firearms because it was very dangerous.
"Three fastest to the goal!"
All your friends are confused by Lieutenant Lee's order. The moments after, with hesitant steps, Youngshin started running towards the goal. Instantly you and the rest of your friends followed suit.
-------------------------
"It's all because of you, you know?" you whispered.
Lieutenant Lee's punishment is over. Now you and others are heading back to the dormitory. You walked next to Ilha.
The boy just glanced at you, not intending to respond you. That made you hiss in annoyance and punch his shoulder.
"Ouch! Why you hit me?!" screamed Ilha while clutching his shoulder.
You glance at him lazily. "No need to exaggerate, I hit you lightly."
"Was it light? You're using internal force!" protest Ilha.
"Shut up, I'm tired. I don't have the energy to deal with your nonsense."
Ilha secretly smiled wryly, "Oh really? You tired, aren't you?"
Without any prompting, Ilha wrapped his arms around you quite tightly. He sandwiches your neck between his arms and body. You who were surprised, tried to break free.
"Akhh! Kwon Ilha, let go of me! You're sweating, you know! Ilha, let me go!!" You were still trying to shake off Ilha's embrace, while the man was laughing at you.
"Hey, let go of (Name). She's having a hard time breathing."
You sighed gratefully, as Jangsoo's words just now managed to make Ilha's embrace weaken and you were able to break away from him.
"Woah, thank yo—"
"Really? Her face doesn't show that she's having trouble breathing."
You who were about to turn to Jangsoo to thank him, suddenly paused in shock as Ilha brought his face closer to you.
"Oh, your face is red. Was I too tight earlier?" Ilha looks at you worriedly when he sees the reddish color appear around your cheeks.
It feels like you want to run as far as you can and drown yourself in the sea. You really hope that this man who is still staring at you doesn't realize that the redness on your face isn't because of difficulty breathing, but because of him.
Yes, you can't lie if you are currently feeling misbehaving because of Ilha's attitude. You cover your embarrassment as much as possible, then push Ilha's face away from you.
Without saying anything, you rush ahead of Ilha and enter the girls' dormitory.
Meanwhile Ilha who sees you walking away from him, chuckles amusedly.
"She's so cute," he said softly.
"When are you going to confess your feeling? I'm tired of you guys being so standoffish."
It turns out that Bora had been next to Jangsoo, watching you and Ilha from the behind.
Ilha looked back at Bora. "Shut up! I'll say it later!"
"That's fine. If you're preceded by someone else, I'll be the one laughing the loudest."
"Damn you!"

Okay, y’all imagine with me for a second-
So
Let’s say Edward snorts when he laughs sometimes. Usually because something funny REALLY catches him off guard or some shit, right? Right, okay, wonderful, adorable-
He accidentally does it in front of Colonel Mustang.
IT’S JUST LIKE THE WHOLE MEME OF ‘When he looks at me. And I look at him. WHEN HE LOOKS AT ME-’ BUT EDWARD IS JUST STEADILY GETTING REDDER AND REDDER IN THE FACE AND MUSTANG JUST STARES LIKE “Hoh?? You lil’ shit???....Do it again-”
Then it escalates to Mustang chasing Edward all around Central Command with the determination and resilience of Goddamn JESUS CHRIST, BECAUSE HE IS READY TO TICKLE THE SNORTS OUT OF EDWARD AND EDWARD IS DYING INSIDE, SCREAMING FOR HIS LIFE-
Edward tries to get Lieutenant Hawkeye to save him.
She just salutes him saying, ‘Rest in Peace, Edward.’
LORD KNOWS HE DIED THAT DAY, COULDN’T GO TEN MINUTES WITHOUT MUSTANG TICKLING THE SNORTS OUT OF HIM AND HE’S ON DEATH’S DOORSTEP BY THE END OF THE WORK DAY.
Oh, but he totally doesn’t let it happen again like, a week later. He totally didn’t rile up Mustang into tickling him to death the very next week. Noooo, why would he ever do that? (fucking liar-)

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10: Discussions
------
Titan’s study seemed to be darker than it had ever been before, the King’s mood leaking into the surrounding environment. Trench’s unease was well hidden on his face, but it was still there, and he exchanged a worried look with X20 as Titan sat in front of them with his eyes closed, chin on his clasped hands as he mulled over their failures of the day.
Finally, his eyes opened, and he regarded them both with a disappointed stare. “X20. You should be glad that you removed any and all information about the plan from Lemoy. That is your only saving grace. How could they have escaped, you idiot?” Titan hissed, expecting an answer.
“W-Well, I…” When X20 couldn’t answer, Titan regarded him with a cold look. His attention was on his once arch-enemy in a second.
“And you.” He began. Troy had to hide the shivers that went up his spine. “I gave you a chance to make things right. And yet, even after how she betrayed you when you needed her, you hesitated,” he mentally counted how many times his Captain failed to land the final strike, “five times.” Titan huffed. “That’s five times too many, Tempest.”
X20 blanched at the use of the Captain’s real name, looking over at the human, shame at having forgotten to take out that stupid key forgotten. He watched Troy with concealed sympathy. Troy frowned, but seemed to take it in his stride. “Sire, all I can do is apologise. I thought I was ready to face her in battle, and I wasn’t…”
Titan huffed after a while, standing up. “I understand the land-dwellers were once your friends, but they are now your enemies. I expect you to treat them as such.” He folded his arms behind his back as he circled the two of them. X20 was instantly reminded of a barracuda circling its prey. “If either of you fail me again, you will pay for it. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sire.”
“Yes, O Titan.”
“Good. Now get out of my sight…” Neither of them needed telling twice. They were out of there in a shot.
------
Atlanta placed her dinner next to where Phones and Fisher were sitting in the cafeteria with a sigh. It had been a week since the Battle of Pacifica, and they’d heard nothing from Titanica. Phones gave her a look as he chewed. He swallowed his mouthful, hoping to strike up a conversation with her. “Hey Atlanta.” He started.
“Hey.” She replied halfheartedly.
“How’s your day been so far?” Atlanta grimaced. “That frantic, huh?”
His friend let out a snort of amusement. “No, not like that. If anything it’s been the opposite.”
Fisher poked at his food. “Quiet, huh?”
“Too quiet…” Atlanta agreed, picking up her fork as Marina sat opposite the human trio. “Especially after what happened in Pacifica.” She sighed. “I don’t like how uneventful things have been.”
Fisher shrugged. “Well, they lost, which I doubt was the plan. Bet they weren’t banking on Marina being so hardcore.” The young Lieutenant gave the mermaid a grin, and she blushed a light green at the praise. “They’re gonna have to adjust for it.”
“I suppose…” Atlanta smiled softly in Fisher’s direction. He had a point. Marina’s hand signals caught her eye. “What’s up Mari?”
The mermaid made a series of gestures, asking for a time to talk to Commander Shore.
“Of course I can get Dad to talk to you. He’d never say no to you… But,” Atlanta raised an eyebrow, “what is this about?”
Marina made more hand signals. Phones eyes widened.
“It’s about your fight with Troy?” Marina nodded at the question. Phones hummed. “Okay. The Commander will wanna hear it, and so will we.”
------
The knock on the door was a surprise, his mask slipped on in a flash, even though he knew it could only really be one person. “Come in.” Sure enough, in stepped X20, carrying a brown paper bag in with him. “What brings you here, X20? Shouldn’t you be out gathering information in Marineville?” Troy took off the mask mid-sentence, eyebrow raised at his subordinate. If Titan ever found out the surface agent was here and not in the field-
“I returned here to report to his majesty about my mission’s progress in person. I’ve got a few marine hours before I’m due to leave Titanica.” X20 admitted in that nasally voice of his. Surprisingly, it didn’t annoy the former WASP as much as it used to. “Thought you might want some company while you’re working. I believe your kind call it ‘socialising’...” The surface agent frowned slightly, sceptical. Making friends had never been the Titanican way, so it didn’t come as naturally to X20 as it did Troy, but he was determined to make this work. He’d been so lonely even before serving Titan, and humans had always praised the benefits of calling someone a friend. Maybe, just maybe, he’d be able to experience that for once.
Troy hummed. “We do.” He looked at the overwhelming stack of reports he had to deal with. Having someone to talk to had always made work fly by for him. He missed that. He missed it a lot… “What harm could it do?” At his superior’s invitation, X20 sat down, pulling out a couple of items out of the bag. Troy’s eyes widened. “Where did you get these?”
X20 placed them in front of the Captain. “I heard they were your favourites back on the surface, before you joined us.” The soft drinks seemed to shine in the fading light of the office. Above the waves, X20 knew the sun was setting, signalling the end of the day. It wouldn’t be the end of it for King Titan’s right and left-hand men, however. “You must be pretty sick of seawater and algae by now. I’ve also heard getting gifts for someone is the best way to start a friendship, but I’m not sure what to do now…” The agent admitted.
Troy offered him a genuine smile, something he felt he hadn’t done in a long time. “Now…” Troy started, more than happy to give X20 some guidance here. “Now we talk about what we like, what we don’t like. We share funny stories from our past and what we want to do in the future. We-” He cut himself off as the images of Atlanta, and then Phones, flashed through his mind. Before X20 could say anything about his sudden silence, he pushed the thought of his former friend and girlfriend to the side. “We talk about fears and uncertainties. We get to really know the people we’re with, as if they’re our blood family.”
“I see.” X20 grinned in understanding. “So, where should we start?”
Troy rubbed his chin in thought. “Well, you already know what my favourite drink is,” he gestured to the cans on his desk, “so, what would you say your favourite is?”
In the end, they ended up talking for a couple of hours, only stopping when an aquaphibian interrupted them to find X20. Their time was up. It was time for the surface agent to return to his mission on the surface. Troy sighed when everyone was out of earshot, his thoughts drifting once more towards Atlanta. It had been surprisingly easy to talk to X20, but it had been even easier to talk to her.
Throughout years of building up their relationship, of sharing everything, they’d finally gotten to a point where Troy couldn’t have imagined a life without her. He’d even gotten a ring for her to offer her. To ask her to spend the rest of her life with him. But Titan had taken him in before he could ask, and his love for her was called into question. Did he even still love her anymore?
There was no way he’d give himself back to the WASPs. But was there a way to convince the woman he loved to join the Titanican cause? He shook his head almost as soon as the thought appeared. Atlanta’s feelings for him were strong, once upon a time, but her love for her father was most definitely stronger at the moment.
Defeated, he took one last look at the ocean out of the window, the vast waters beyond the city now completely black. He stood up, sliding his mask back on. He had a few checks to make before calling it a night.
------
Commander Shore was the first to speak. “Troy was hesitating?” The control room was silent upon Marina’s reveal. From the outside, it would’ve looked as if he just kept missing his mark, but the mermaid knew him too well than to believe that. “You’re certain?” Marina nodded, determined.
“I knew it…” Phones muttered. “I knew there’d be a way to get through to him!”
Fisher grinned. “Yeah, he’d never want to hurt us, no matter what side he’s on.”
“Hold on.” Shore held up his hands, signalling a time-out. “I already know what you’re thinking, and it’s out of the question.” Phones froze. “You’re not going to Titanica to try and convince Troy to come home.” Shore frowned, offering the Lieutenant a sympathetic look. “I’m sorry. But it’s too dangerous.”
“But Commander,” Fisher began, “this may be our best chance. If Troy’s having doubts, he’s more likely to listen to us.”
The Commander sighed. “I’m well aware. But the Titanican attack on Pacifica was costly, even if we did win. Too many crews are gravely wounded.” His previously sharp gaze drooped as his mind drifted to the officers who had lost their lives that day. His companions were similarly subdued. “Or worse…” He locked eyes with Phones, who looked back at him sadly. “We’re weakened while they’re recovering. Stingray will remain on standby until then. That’s-”
“Sir, please don’t say it.” Fisher cut him off hurriedly.
“That’s an order.” Everyone gave him a look. “Oh, don’t give me that.” He subtly rolled his eyes. He swore up and down he didn’t just have one child sometimes. “You all know I’m right. Now, you all better get to bed. It’s late.”
“Commander!” The frantic voice of one of the cadets floated through the doors. “News from Patrol Vessel Number 33!” Everyone looked at the young woman, curious. “They have captured a Titanican vessel just a few miles west of the beach. And they have a prisoner.”
Commander Shore raised an eyebrow. “I can tell there’s something particularly special about this prisoner…” He smirked when the cadet nodded. “Well, speak up soldier! Who’s the lone soul who’ll have to deal with WASP interrogation first thing tomorrow?”
“It’s Surface Agent X20, sir…”
