Day 189
"Speedo-Juice???
How is Dr. Nemesis (aka as Nazi murderer Dr. Death) not a flattened white pancake? Also, sadly no speedo. Also, this demonstrates why the alliance with the X_Men was doomed, when the X-Men think stealing the Atlanteans power source is no big thing.

Post #12: UXM issues 123-124 and UXM Annual issue 3
At this point, the idea that the X-Men don’t know Jean is alive is pushing past the boundaries of disbelief. Scott is dating Colleen Wing, and they’ve talked extensively about their pasts, specifically Jean. So Collen thinks Jean is dead. But her best friend Misty Knight, Jean’s old roommate, knows she’s alive? If I heard that my best friend’s old roommate and friend has been dead for months, I think I would check on how she’s doing with the grieving process. But it hasn’t come up once. And from Misty’s perspective, if my best friend was dating my old roommate’s ex, even though I thought they were still together, I feel like I would at least question the situation. Anyway, Arcade is kidnapping the X-Men one by one. Spider-Man is running around trying to warn them, which doesn’t really contribute to the plot, but it’s fun to see him. Important notes- Logan is kidnapped after his dinner with Mariko, and his love for her is bringing out his softer side. This is the first woman he’s ever been willing to make changes for. Also, when Arcade kidnaps Kurt and Peter, they’re with their girlfriends Amanda and Betsy, and Kurt’s not wearing his image inducer. Kurt hasn’t been in New York since the Phoenix Saga, where he was still using the image inducer even on his dates, and it’s a big deal for him to not be using it now, although the only mention of this development was one throwaway line while fighting the Imperial Guard. Kurt needs some focus soon, he’s really been getting pushed aside lately when they’re handing out character development. Speaking of which, Sean’s time with the team has been circling its natural endpoint since he lost his powers, which he knows but is still putting off. But putting all that aside, it’s time for the X-Men to play Arcade’s games. Arcade is kind of a weird X-Man villain. Sometimes he’s used as a way to make the X-Men question reality, but Mastermind and the Shadow King both do that better. He can also be used as a commentary on how the elite profit on the suffering of the marginalized, but Mojo does that too. You could argue that Arcade works better since he’s a human, but they’re both so cartoonishly over the top that I don’t think that really makes a difference. Not that every villain has to serve a specific higher purpose, of course, but different writers and stories have different opinions on whether Arcade should, or whether he’s just an excuse to throw whatever weirdly specific traps the artist wants onto the page. That in itself is a good enough excuse to use him as often as Claremont does, I think. This first time around, it’s all fairly standard villain traps (although there might be something deeper to Logan’s, who finds himself attacked by distorted funhouse mirror androids of himself), except for Peter’s. Playing off his recent homesickness and guilt over abandoning his homeland, he’s been brainwashed into becoming “the Proletariat,” basically a Soviet Captain America trying to kill the X-Men.
Arcade gives a backstory dump to the captive girlfriends, and we learn that he was a trust fund kid who got bored and became a hitman, then got bored of that and started using Murderworld for his hits. There’s definitely an analogy there for rich men who ruin lives out of boredom. The X-Men dodge a bunch more deathtraps until Peter catches up to them. He almost breaks Scott and Ororo’s necks until they get through to him by reminding him of their family bond and love for each other. Together, they all find the exit, and Arcade being a good sport, he delivers them the hostages. Logan wants to track him down, but Scott points out that they can’t find him or make any charges stick, which does add to the rich guy analogy. I feel like I may be reading way to deep into Arcade as a character, but I had fun so I don’t really care. This was a good Murderworld story, although I think the next few coming up in a couple years are much better.
UXM Annual 3 is a standalone story about the X-Men’s journey to the world of Polymachus. It opens with the alien warrior Arkon arriving on Earth seeking Thor. When he’s unavailable, he turns his sights towards Ororo, who’s currently in a Danger Room training session. When she gets claustrophobic and freaks out, she damages the computer, sending the room haywire and almost killing everyone. Afterwards, Scott goes after her and has a heart to heart. Ororo is tired of fighting; she believes in the cause, but she also missed when she used her powers for healing back in Kenya. It’s not mentioned explicitly, but I think this is stemming from Ororo’s recent encounter with drug addicted homeless kids; she’s been reminded of all the problems that can’t be fought, and wants to find one that she can still solve. It’s also a very good moment for Scott, as Ororo points out in her thought bubbles. He’s been opening up more to his team and being more considerate, not just a field leader but the head of a family. She’s interrupted by Arkon’s attack, which ends up on the lawn. When he throws one of his teleporting lightning bolts at her, the X-Men think she’s been vaporized and lose their shit, quickly taking down Arkon. Scott, however, knows how the bolts work, and uses them to bring the team- along with their new prisoner- to Polymachus. They start fighting the armies of soldiers, but when they finally reach Ororo, they find that she’s ready to willingly give her life for the people. To recharge the space rings that give life to the planet, Storm must unleash all her lighting onto a machine, but the strain will kill her. She is not afraid, but Scott has a plan. Logan and Kurt rewire the machine to receive optic blasts instead of lightning, and Ororo instead directs her power into Scott, with Peter as a lightning rod. It works, and they save the planet without casualties. In a very literal sense, it was Scott opening up to his friends that saved them. It’s also a good answer to Ororo’s doubts; as an X-Man, she can still heal, and by working together, they can accomplish more than she ever could alone. This is the first UXM Annual to have a new story instead of just reprints, and it sets the great trend of using these to tell big, standalone sci-fi stories.

Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont Reading Order
Tumblr media
With each list made I felt better about trying harder ones, but this was still the most intimidating comic reading list there is. It encompasses so many years, titles, minis, GNs and characters that I didn’t know what to bother with and what not to, or where they led. It took me a long time and a lot of mixing and matching of other lists to find a basic framework that I could then nudge as I read it.
This is an attempt at presenting the entire mutantsphere as it evolves. When New Mutants/X-Factor/Excalibur start I add what you need to know to introduce them - things that you would’ve known about if you were reading at the time of release just because of the climate or through osmosis. That said, I only mention the basics for setting up the title before returning to UXM, rather than integrating them all. Because of that not everything is by Claremont, but I’d say at least 80% is, and if I included anything that isn’t then there's a reason.
I chose to start with Classic X-Men, a reprint comic published in the late 80s to catch people up. Each issue has some corrections and cleaning up of panels or dialogue, plus a new short story (usually by Claremont) taking place around the time of each issue. I read these instead of the original issues because of the extras and benefit of hindsight.
Bold=important parts of the main story Italics=optional (with explanations)
Classic X-Men 1
Giant-Size Uncanny X-Men 1 -- Even though Classic 1 is supposed to be a modified reprint, it skips a lot of stuff in here, so I think both portray a more complete picture. Not gonna lie, it’s pretty messy reading both of these back to back cause Classic rewrites like 2/3 of the story, but that kind of big overhaul and confusion is only for the first issue.
Classic 2-13 (UXM 94-105)
UXM 106 -- Wasn’t in the Classic run because it wasn’t part of the “main” story but it’s a fun one shot.
Classic 14-16 (UXM 107-109)
UXM 110 -- A fill-in story that also wasn’t included in Classic, which is a crime because it’s the first time they played baseball!
Classic 17-30 (UXM 111-124)
UXM Annual 3
Classic 31-44 (UXM 125-138)
Bizarre Adventures 27
Phoenix The Untold Story -- Sort of a high-end “what if” issue that contains round table transcripts of the creators and editorial team, plus artwork of how they came to the conclusion of the story, and other possibilities along the way.
UXM Annual 4
Classic 45 (UXM 139) -- The end of the reprints adding new content. They continue on but without bonus stuff.
UXM 140
Marvel Team-Up (V1) 100 -- Introduces a future new mutant plus a short backup story about the first meeting between Storm and Black Panther as children. Written by Claremont.
UXM 141-149
Avengers Annual 10
UXM 150
UXM Annual 5
Marvel Fanfare (V1) 1-4
UXM 151-153
Uncanny X-Men and the Teen Titans -- Out of continuity crossover written by Claremont. Takes place around this time but can be read anytime after the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Marvel Treasury Edition 26, 27 -- The short backups near the end of each issue.
UXM 154-166
The New Mutants Graphic Novel -- Introduces the new students.
New Mutants 1-3 -- Leads into 167 better than just the graphic novel.
UXM 167
UXM Annual 6
UXM Special Edition (1983) — Reprint of giant-size 1 but includes a new kitty Pryde backup story.
X-Men: God Loves; Man Kills -- Wasn’t meant to be canon but future writers retcon it in.
UXM 168-171
Wolverine (V1) 1-4 -- Relevant to the main story.
UXM 172-175
UXM Annual 7
Magik 1-4 -- Shows how Illyana grew up and what she went through.
UXM 176-180
NM 15, 16 -- These (and later 17) follow Kitty’s journey with the NM while the rest of the X-Men are on Warworld in SW.
Secret Wars One 1-12 -- If you’ve read this before or don’t want to read the whole thing you don’t have to, but you should at least skim it for the X-Men bits, as the Colossus parts are particularly relevant. Magneto and Prof X also refer back to it sometimes.
UXM 181, 182
NM 17
UXM 183-188
Kitty Pryde & Wolverine 1-6
UXM 189-192
UXM Annual 8
Firestar 1, 2 -- Introduction to the character from the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon into comics canon. It takes place over years which is why I cut UXM 193 in between.
UXM 193
Firestar 3, 4
X-Men and Alpha Flight 1-2 -- Muddy continuity things prevent it from clearly being put anywhere. Apparently the explanation is that it takes places between the middle and end of a single issue... Becomes relevant later.
UXM 194
Nightcrawler (V1) 1-4 -- Cockrum writes and draws Nightcrawler fucking around for four issues. Gets the briefest of acknowledgements later.
Power Pack (V1) 12, UXM 195
Secret Wars Two 1
UXM 196-198
Longshot 1-6 -- Introduces Longshot, Spiral, Mojo and Mojoworld.
UXM 199
NM Special Edition 1 (1985), UXM Annual 9
UXM 200, 201
X-Men: Heroes for Hope -- Special charity issue by every big name writer/artist at the time. Self-contained.
UXM 202-206
Avengers 263, Fantastic Four 286, X-Factor 1 -- These show how the Original 5 X-Men members come back together to form X-Factor. Can be read anywhere between 202 and 210, I just stuck them here for an attempt at pacing.
Marvel Fanfare 33 -- Doesn’t fit super well anywhere because this issue was meant as a video game tie-in. Other lists put it after annual 11 but that’s publication order and definitely doesn’t fit there.
NM Annual 2, UXM Annual 10
UXM 207-209
Mutant Massacre
UXM 210, X-Factor 9, UXM 211, XF 10, NM 46, Thor 373, Power Pack 27, UXM 212, Thor 374, XF 11, UXM 213 -- NM adds some backdrop -- like creating a medical area -- to the events but doesn’t progress the main story.
UXM 214-219
Fantastic Four vs The X-Men 1-4
X-Men vs Avengers 1-4 -- Provides closure to the story in 200.
UXM Annual 11
Fall of the Mutants
I dropped some titles you’ll see in other lists like Daredevil and New Mutants because they either add nothing or have their own, unrelated story that really just keeps you from the main title longer. Everything italicized is related to X-Factor, which also tells its own story but has some links to UXM which carry over into Inferno. It’s broken up with UXM issues for impact and spoilers. If you don’t care about X-Factor you can skip all that and just read 220-227.
XF 18-23, UXM 220-224, Incredible Hulk 340, XF 24, 25, PP 35, UXM 225-227, Captain America 339, XF 26, FF 312 -- Hulk is mostly a transition issue between 224 to 225, Power Pack just shows an extended version of a fight, Cap closes a loose end, Fantastic Four is an epilogue.
UXM 228-231
Excalibur Special Edition (1988) -- Alternate title “Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn.” This shows what happens to the leftover X-Men members who weren’t around for FotM and ties up their loose ends before launching Excalibur.
Marvel Comics Presents 1-10, Wolverine (V2) 1-8, 10 -- These take place over the months between 227 and 232. They’re just Wolverine solo stories I included because there are a couple easter eggs that distinctly place them during this time and because Claremont wrote them.
UXM Annual 12
UXM 232-238
Inferno
UXM 239, X-Terminators 1-3, XF 36, UXM 240-241, NM 71, XT 4, NM 72-73, XF 37, UXM 242, XF 38, UXM 243, XF 39
UXM 244, 245
UXM Annual 13 -- Atlantis Attacks tie-in that’s pretty confusing if you’re not following the whole event. Jubilee backup that shows what happens to her between 244 and her next appearance. The Jubilee story is kinda worth it.
Havok and Wolverine: Meltdown 1-4 — I didn’t add this originally because it’s disappointing and self-contained but eventually it’s mentioned again, years after these lists end, in X-factor 112.
UXM 246-267
Days of Future Present: FF Annual 23, NM Annual 6, XF Annual 5, UXM Annual 14
UXM 268, 269
X-Tinction Agenda: UXM 270, NM 95, XF 60, UXM 271, NM 96, XF 61, UXM 272, NM 97, XF 62
UXM 273-274
Kings of Pain: NM Annual 7, New Warriors Annual 1, UXM Annual 15, X-Factor Annual 6 -- Story across annuals about NW and X-Force with backups about Freedom Force. Totally skippable unless you’re reading those. Put here for breathing room between it and the Muir Isle saga.
UXM 275-277
Muir Isle Saga: UXM 278-279, XF 69, UXM 280, XF 70
X-Men (V2) 1-3
For some epilogue stories, see also
X-Men (V2) 4-11 -- Jim Lee stuck around on pencils through 11. And while I have opinions about his effect on the series, he drew the hell out of the book.
Weapon X (Marvel Comics Presents 72-84) — Barry Windsor-Smith tells the original story revealing Logan’s transformation and escape from Weapon X.
X-Men/Spider-Man -- A series of one-shots about crossovers between the team and SM across their careers. It’s fine by itself but excels at finding points in each title’s continuity to unite them. Like 4 issues of fun references and interactions.
X-Men: Grand Design -- A truncated retelling of the X-Men’s years from the start up to Claremont’s exodus, including most future retcons. It might seem weird to suggest a retelling of stories you just read but this is done so well while seamlessly including retcons and making small adjustments with the benefit of hindsight that it is itself a great reading experience. Sort of like when you watch a movie series after finishing the books to compare.
X-Men Forever: Alpha, 1-20, Annual 1, 21-24, Giant-Size 1, XMF 2: 1-16 -- This was an ongoing that Claremont started in 2009, picking up from X-Men #3 to tell the stories he’d had planned as if nothing happened afterwards, which he does for some (like pairing kitty with gambit) while others he just kills off because he decides he’d rather add some stuff he couldn’t have done back then. It’s still fun to see all the rumored plotlines and hints coming to fruition. Or being somewhat confirmed. The story itself isn’t satisfying, but at least it’s interesting. Alpha reprints those 3 issues from 1991 but also has a short story bridging the gap between it and issue 1. You should read it before starting the first issue because they didn’t even include that in the trade. After 24 it then has a giant-size one shot and reboots into X-Men Forever 2, which lasts up to 16.
I’ll occasionally add some stuff so if you didn’t catch something last time it might not have been there! Like the X-Men Forever entry, which I read almost 7 months ago but didn’t decide to put in until now.

FOR DOUG, here is what i would recommend reading, in chronological order, which is how i would recommend reading it:
The New Mutants (1983) #13-#60 + Annual #1-3 + Special Edition #1 [cw for child death in TNM #60, as Doug dies in this issue. #61 & #64 discuss reactions to his death, but aren’t necessary to read for Doug.]
New Mutants: Truth or Death (1997) #1-3
New Mutants (2009) #6-11 [+ X-Necrosha #1 & Necrosha event for details on Doug’s resurrection]
X-Men: Second Coming event [Doug is in most, but not all, issues, but I’d recommend the entire event because Doug is important to the overarching plot: X-Men: Second Coming #1, Uncanny X-Men #523,NM #12, X-Men: Legacy #235,X-Force #26, UXM #524, NM #13, XML #326, XF #27, UXM #525, NM #14, XML #237, XF #28, XM: SC #2]
X-Men: To Serve and Protect #1, in the “Present Tense” story

New Mutants Forever (2010) #1-5 [set roughly around The New Mutants #50]
All New X-Factor (2014) #5-20

Powers of X (2019) #1-4
you are now caught up with Doug Ramsey as of yesterday morning!
UPCOMING DOUG COMICS: New Mutants: War Children oneshot in 2 weeks looks to be fairly Warlock focused, and where there’s Warlock, there’s Doug. also, keep up with House of X/Powers of X because i am Certain he will continue to be important, and ask your lcb to pre-order New Mutants (2019) for your pull list, as he’ll be in that starting November 6!

It's amazing how Ed Brisson made me start to like Cyclops in the UXM annual...only for Rosenberg to completely make me hate him again in like 3 pages. He's really not doing the group any favors is he?
Rosenberg wants to go back to the 90′s Cyclops and is desperate to hammer him despite it now being like fitta round piece into a square hole.

A Hypothetical Mapping of Marv Wolfman’s Teen Titans Run Into Omnibuses
I tried to figure out what would be decent cutoff points for New Teen Titans omnibuses based on the size of the three new editions released/solicited. This also doubles as an abridged chronicle of the run.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 1 - already released DC Comics Presents 26, New Teen Titans Vol 1 1-20, Tales of the New Teen Titans 1-4 The big kickoff to one of the best superhero runs of all time. All Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Introduction of Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, Deathstroke, and more.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 2 - coming in February New Teen Titans Vol 1 21-40, Tales of the Teen Titans 41, Annual 1-2, Batman and the Outsiders 5 The main developments here are Brother Blood and Starfire's Tamaran connections. Terra and the Vigilante get introduced.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 3 - coming in July Tales of the Teen Titans 42-58, New Teen Titans Vol 2 1-9 The Judas Contract, shit goes to 11 for the Teen Titans, Terra, Deathstroke. Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing. Jericho is introduced as a new core member. The series gets so popular that it gets the Baxter treatment. Which means getting printed on nicer paper with less ads. Which came with a renumbering I guess. The opening of that volume seems to resolve Raven's plotline (which was also the genesis for the team in the first place). The Titans defeat her father and she disappears.
George Perez also ends his continuous run as penciler for the series with Vol 2 #5. Most of the major plots up to this point are resolved. These are the only solicited volumes right now. So this is actually a good jumping off point.
So what might come next?
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 4 New Teen Titans Vol 2 10-25, Annual 1-2, Teen Titans Spotlight 1-6, Omega Men 34-35 Classic DC artist Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez follows up Perez for a short stint. Kole is introduced. But then quickly killed alongside Aquagirl and Dove in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Which will impact some Titans history for a while. Starfire is forced into a political wedding, which pushes away Dick. Roy Harper discovers he has a daughter with the villain Cheshire. Among all this chaos, Donna Troy tries to assemble mismatched pieces like Jason Todd to lead the Titans.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 5 New Teen Titans Vol 2 26-49, Annual 3-4, Infinity Inc 45 Eduardo Barreto is now the consistent artist on the book. The team finds Raven again and defeats Brother Blood again. They encounter the Wildebeest Society, which will factor heavily into the book as time goes on. An annoying kid named Danny Chase joins the team. They help out Dial H for Hero and Red Star.
Besides those JLGL issues and a few major plot points for characters, this chunk is a valley rather than a peak, but it’s not really bad. Wolfman has claimed in interviews that he was suffering from writer’s block for a few years. So there are some repetitive plots.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 6 New Titans 50-69, Annual 5-6, Batman 440-441, Secret Origins Annual 3 Eduardo Barreto is gone. But who better to replace him than the return of George Perez? The side effects of the Crisis are really starting to be felt across the DCU. First on the docket is to fix Donna Troy's continuity for the second time in the Who is Wonder Girl story. She becomes Troia. The next issue addresses some Titans West stuff. Then the Secret Origins Annual recaps and fixes the entire Titans continuity post-Crisis. Perez drops off from drawing the book and then from co-plotting. He's still writing Wonder Woman and gearing up for the War of the Gods crossover, so maybe he was too busy. Bat fans should recognize those issues as half of A Lonely Place of Dying, which handed the Robin mantle to Tim Drake.
Again, another stopping point. Perez is now 100% done with the Titans besides drawing the cover for the final issue of the series. The stability of the book is about to be all over the place too.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 7 New Titans 70-92, Annual 8, Team Titans 1-3, Deathstroke 14-16 Two huge controversial storylines here. Tom Grummett (Superboy, Robin) is now the artist, with a more cartoony but also 90s style. The original Titans Hunt featured the Wildbeest Society hunting the Titans. Spoilers for a 30 year old story, but Jericho is revealed to be leading them. His father (Deathstroke for the clueless) kills him and helps the Titans in the finale. Some D-listers like Red Star, Pantha, Phantasm, and Baby Wildebeest join the team. Raven and Cyborg are constantly changing. Titans Tower is destroyed. Then right after that insanity, a team of weird Titans from a future timeline appear. One of them seems to be the long dead Terra. They want to kill Donna Troy because allegedly her baby is basically the Anti-Christ. Turns out that's not true and these alternate future peeps just stick around for a while.
Depending on who you ask, Titans Hunt and Total Chaos are 90s trash or an exciting uptick in the history of the Titans with a blockbuster story and lots of status quo changes. However, past this point the book officially devolves into standard 1990s fare and loses a ton of focus.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 8 New Titans 93-114, Annual 9-10, Sell-Out Special, Showcase 94 11 The book is kind of shit now, but not absolute shit for some of this. A major editor left and Wolfman is running out of ideas. Roy Harper comes back and becomes Arsenal. Nightwing and Starfire get engaged, only for their wedding to be absolutely ruined by Raven. Tom Grummett leaves and is replaced by a very 90s nobody. Everyone you care about leaves the team at the end of this.
Tumblr media
New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol 9 New Titans 0, 115-130, Annual 11, Deathstroke 48-49, Green Lantern Vol 3 65, Darkstars 32, 34, Damage 16 And we reach the end of the journey with the final volume. With a broken team and Zero Hour allowing for soft reboots, Arsenal assembles a new one. Featuring characters you like such as Donna Troy, Kyle Rayner, Impulse, Damage, and Terra (the fake one). Or at least you liked them if you were still reading comics in 1995 for some reason. That shitty 90s artist is even gone and replaced by someone tolerable. But it's totally lost the flavor that made the book so genius 10-15 years before. Fans were completely burned out from the direction and the industry at large, so the book was canceled.
My divisions are based mostly on natural cutoff points and also shooting for similar sized volumes. The three existing volumes all sit around that 24-27 issue mark.
So depending on what kind of Titans fan one is, the options would be 1-3, 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, or 1-9. It seems like each omnibus is about 3 trades, with some wiggle room.
Addendums:
Tumblr media
Teen Titans Spotlight is a 21 issue spinoff series created so that Titans related characters could have solo stories that wouldn't work in the context of a team book. Wolfman only wrote 1-6, an arc about Starfire dealing with South African apartheid and a Jericho arc. No other issues are really integral to the main plots. So these are the only ones that make sense in these collections, if at all.
Other semi-significant Spotlight stories though: -7-8 - Hawk in the period after his brother's death but before Dawn Granger pops up -9 - Changeling (Beast Boy) doing some more reconnecting with his Doom Patrol past -10 - Aqualad, technically does continue from a main series plot, but who cares -13 - JMS' first comics work on a Cyborg vs Two-Face story -15 - picks up on some Tamaranian plots, but effectively a minor epilogue to the 80s Omega Men series -21 - a Silver Age throwback issue from Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle
Tumblr media
Team Titans is the book starring the alternate future characters that no one cares about besides Terra. First three issues are part of Total Chaos. The damn book somehow lasted 24 issues though. Wolfman was involved in the writing of the first half. There is really no reason to include those other 9 issues. And the series is totally pointless and bad.
Tumblr media
New Titans ends in 1996. Also when Wolfman's other ongoing Titans work ends. That being Deathstroke Vol 1, which lasted 60 issues. Giving the Terminator his own book was majorly inspired by the success Marvel was having with the Punisher. The first 34 issues are all drawn by the same artist, Steve Erwin. Past issue 40, Slade is framed for murder and all kinds of DCU characters try and take him down. His daughter Rose is introduced here.
Tumblr media
Just like the main Titans book, sales were lagging hard near the end. So they did some stupid thing where Slade literally walked out of an explosion a changed man. He was de-aged, had amnesia, a dumb new color scheme, and a new artist. It was stupid and didn't help sales.
DC has been reprinting this Deathstroke series alongside New Teen Titans. They're up to four volumes, getting to #25. The early half of this run is actually good and a decent companion piece to Titans. And obviously people are digging Rebirth Deathstroke now. Wolfman did a major plot with Batman before Christopher Priest. Avoid all N52 Deathstroke junk.
Marv Wolfman's Titans run is just over 15 years. A couple years short of Claremont's legendary X-Men run. Though Claremont also wrote and maneuvered around a wider line of closely related spinoffs. Claremont also maintained a higher average. Those first five years of NTT with Perez can rival the heights of Claremont though. Maybe blasphemous, but I find Perez more interesting than Byrne. Then there are occasional highs for another seven years or so.
For comparison, Claremont's complete original X-Men run sits at a similar 10 oversized hardcover volumes or so. Though they're a little larger on average. 1. UXM Vol 1 2. Vol 2 3. Vol 3 4. Eventual Vol 4 5. Mutant Massacre/uncollected gap 6. Fall of the Mutants 7. Inferno Prologue 8. Inferno 9. Claremont and Lee Vol 1 10. X-Tinction Agenda/Claremont and Lee Vol 2

Hey, I'm pretty new to xmen, but Kurt is 1000% my fave. I was wondering which comics I should read to get more of his story! I love your blog too great stuff
Okay, first of all: there are too many books he appears in, so I just tried to list some important ones (and this not even close to listing everything!) And if you want to simply read books he is in, you really need to go through many team books.
The easy part, Nightcrawler series:
- Nightcrawler (1985-1986) - 4 issue- Nightcrawler Vol 2 (2002-2002)- 4 issue- Nightcrawler Vol 3 (2004-2006) - 12 issue- Nightcrawler Vol 4 (2014-2015) - 12 issue
- X-Men: Manifest Destiny Nightcrawler #1 (May, 2009)- X-Men Origins: Nightcrawler #1 (May, 2010)
———————————————————————————
Some important appearance/story from the beginning until now:
- Uncanny X-Men: start with his first appearance in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975) but I’d say read UXM of 80’s.(AND/OR read Classic X-Men, which is a reprint of uncanny issues, but with new panels/stories!-Classic X-Men #1-45,-X-Men Classic #46-110)
- Excalibur (1988-1998) - a must
(After Excalibur he’s in Uncanny X-Men again - from 1998, so you can continue here )
- in 2003 he gets an origin story ‘Draco’ in Uncanny X-Men by Chuck Austen (but you need to know, it’s one of the most hated X-Men stories. For reasons.)Chuck Austen’s run on UXM: #410-441, and Draco: #428-434 (2003)(And before Chuck Austen, the priest story happend.)
- Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont from #444 (2004) (better story, good art)
- X-Men: Second Coming related books (2010) - (he dies here)
- Amazing X-Men (2014) 19 issues (resurrected) - a must( the last solo series begins in 2014 too)
- Extraordinary X-Men (2015) -  (it’s not the best Nightcrawler story again…)
- X-Men Gold - current X-book  - (it’s ok so far)
——————————————————————————
Significant Issues: (by marvel universe wiki)
Killed foster brother (X-Men Annual #4, 1980); first joined X-Men (Giant-Size X-Men #1, 1975); first used image inducer (Classic X-Men #4, 1986); first blended with shadows (X-Men #102, 1976); first encountered Mystique (X-Men #141, 1981); injured by Marauders (Uncanny X-Men #211, 1986); co-founded Excalibur (Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn, 1988); regained full powers (Excalibur #37, 1991); formed N-Men (Excalibur #45, 1991); learned Mystique is mother (X-Men Unlimited #4, 1994); rejoined X-Men (Uncanny X-Men #360/X-Men #80, 1998); first seen studying for priesthood (X-Men #100, 2000); first encountered Supreme Pontiff (Uncanny X-Men #400, 2001); quit priesthood (Uncanny X-Men #419, 2003); learned Azazel is father (Uncanny X-Men #432, 2003); died (X-Force #26, 2010)————————————————————————
A few issues I can think of and recommend:
(there’s definitely much more!)
- Amazing Spider-man 161 & 162  (1976)- Guardians Team-Up #6 (2015)- Deadpool/Spider-Man  #14 (2016)- Deadpool (2012) #27 (wedding)- Nation X #1 (2009) - (road trip)- Wolverine (2003) #6 - (I don’t need to say anything here :D)- Axis revolution #2- Classic X-Men #4 - The Big Dare! - Male Bonding (Marvel Comics Presents, #101 - 108) (with Wolverine)- Wolverine weapon X #16 (2009) - Death of Wolverine: Life after Logan (2014)- Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #17 (2017)- Exiles #28-30 (2001) - (meets his daughter from another universe)- Bizarre adventue  #27 (1981) (mentioned in his first solo series)- What If? Vol 2 #98 (if Mystique had raised Kurt)- Uncanny X-Men #204
—————————————————————————
A comic made exclusively for the movie: X-Men 2 (2003):
X-Men 2: Nightcrawler - Official Movie Prequel
—————————————————————————
Alternate univers Kurt
(this is not in order)
- Kurt Darkholme / Age of Apocalypse Nightcrawler (Killer version of Nightcrawler): Uncanny X-Force Vol 1 , X-Calibre, X-Termination 1 & 2, Age of Apocalypse Vol 1, Astonishing X-Men Vol 3
- Kurt Waggoner (Kid version of Nightcrawler): X-Treme X-Men Vol 2Astonishhing X-Men Vol 3————————————————————————
And lastly here’s another longer list of important issues about Kurt that are worth a read:
https://uncannyxmen.net/characters/nightcrawler/checklist————————————————————————I hope it helps. If anyone wants to add something to the list, please do!I might’ve made mistakes; in that case let me know.

X-Factor by Louise Simonson Reading Order
Tumblr media
When this series started the main X-Men team was full of all new people while Angel, Iceman and Beast had left to bump around between college and groups like the Champions, Defenders and Avengers. Jean was dead, and Cyclops ceded leadership of the team to Storm before retiring to Alaska with his wife and newborn son. ...But fans missed the originals so Marvel jumped through some silly hoops and retconned everyone back to their original versions.
The basis of the team is that X-Factor advertises themselves as humans who hunt down mutants, taking advantage of prejudice to get people to call on anyone they suspect of being a mutant. Once alerted the team would confront the person and, if they actually were a mutant, try to help them by inviting them back to base to stay and learn their powers.
While I wrote lists for other X-Men runs, each is supposed to function by itself rather than part of some master list. I’m sure you could piece them together easily enough if you wanted, but this is made with the mindset of someone only reading X-Factor. Bold=important or official part of the story Italics=optional with a note to let you decide for yourself
Avengers 263, Fantastic Four 286 -- These issues set up the return of the main team and lead into X-Factor 1.
X-Factor (V1) 1-4
XF Annual 1
XF 5-8 -- Louise Simonson takes over with 6 and lasts through 62.
Mutant Massacre
This was the first of the big 3 crossovers uniting the X titles. Despite being the newest, it really thrived during these crossovers, telling such big stories that they almost felt like the main title.
Uncanny X-Men 210, XF 9, UXM 211, XF 10, NM 46, Thor 373, Power Pack (V1) 27, UXM 212, Thor 374, XF 11, UXM 213
XF 12-16
Thor 377, 378 -- A big change to Iceman that lasts through the entire run.
XF 17
XF Annual 2
XF 18-20
Incredible Hulk 336, 337 -- XF 20 leads into these 2 issues. It doesn’t lead back into their title or get mentioned again but they ARE a significant part of the story.
Fall of The Mutants
The second “crossover” of X-titles, except they all pretty much tell their own story in different, unrelated parts of the world so I didn’t include everything. Hulk is just a transition issue for UXM, PP shows an extended XF fight, Cap closes up a loose end, FF is an epilogue. The UXM issues are there because they’re mentioned in Inferno, where the two titles come together.
XF 21-23, UXM 220-224, Incredible Hulk 340, XF 24, 25, PP 35, UXM 225-227, Captain America 339, XF 26, FF 312
XF 27-29
XF Annual 3 -- Part of the Evolutionary War Annuals crossover but each annual’s story is pretty self-contained to their title.
XF 30-34
Inferno
Here the titles cross-pollinate heavily, ending up with some characters jumping over to other books. New Mutants also tells a significant part of Inferno that mostly precedes the XF/UXM issues, but I felt like the X-Terminators miniseries explained enough of that story. Plus there’s already so much convolution in this event that I wanted to narrow the view. UXM 239, X-Terminators 1, XF 35, XT 2-3, XF 36, UXM 240-241, XF 37, XT 4, UXM 242, XF 38, UXM 243, XF 39
XF 40
NM 76
XF 41, 42
XF Annual 4 -- Part of Atlantis Attacks, works as one-shot, follows up on the previous NM issue.
XF 43-58*
Days of Future’s Present: FF Annual 23, NM Annual 6, XF Annual 5, UXM Annual 14
XF 59
XF: Prisoner of Love -- Self contained one-shot about Beast. Mostly just adding to let you know it exists; as far as I know it’s never mentioned again.
X-Tinction Agenda: UXM 270, NM 95, XF 60, UXM 271, NM 96, XF 61, UXM 272, NM 97, XF 62 -- The last big X-over of the three titles during the Claremont era, also the last issues written by Simonson.
XF 63-64**
UXM 273 -- X-Tinction Agenda epilogue by Claremont, also the last issue of his original run where he did both the plot and script.
Kings of Pain: NM Annual 7, New Warriors Annual 1, UXM Annual 15, X-Factor Annual 6 -- Story across annuals about NW and X-Force with backups about Freedom Force. Totally skippable if you’re not reading those. Put here for breathing room between it and the Muir Isle saga.
XF 65-68
Muir Isle Saga: UXM 278-279, XF 69, UXM 280, XF 70
X-Men (V2) 1-3 -- This serves to show all the characters together before they split into teams.
At this point Peter David takes over writing and creates an entirely new team, starting a run that’s popular in its own right.
To follow Cyclops and Beast continue with the Blue team in X-Men (V2) 4.
For Jean Grey, Iceman and Archangel jump to the Gold team starting with Uncanny X-Men 281. See Also:
*X-Men Legends 3, 4 -- X-Men Legends is a 2021 anthology title that had original creators return to tell stories set during their era. The Simsonsons wrote this to take place immediately “before 43″ but like every prequel type thing it spoils later stuff.
**X-Factor Forever 1-5 -- Out of continuity mini from 2010 by Simonson set after her departure in XF 64, it allowed her to show what her future plans for the team were before leaving. Best read after you've finished everything, like a deleted scene or bonus content.

New Mutants Volume 1 Reading Order
Tumblr media
With the X-Men’s success Marvel editorial demanded the brand be expanded into more titles. Claremont, after fighting this as long as he could, made the compromise to do one, but his way. The result was New Mutants. This focuses on a diverse group of teen (13-19) outcasts, most having nowhere else to go, joining the school to get a handle on their powers. The goal was not for them to be a backup team or the next generation of the X-Men, but for Professor X to return to his base goal of a safe space for raising mutants. This is also where the Hellfire Club, particularly Emma Frost, and their inner workings are more fully explored, largely because they have a rival group of young mutants called Hellions that mirror the NM. While I wrote lists for other X-Men runs, each is supposed to function by itself rather than part of some master list. I’m sure you could piece them together easily enough if you wanted, but this is made with the mindset of someone only reading NM. Bold=important parts of the main story Italics=optional (with explanations)
Marvel Team-Up (V1) 100 -- The first appearance of Xi'an Coy Manh, also known as Karma, which leads into 165 and then the GN.
Uncanny X-Men (V1) 165 -- There are only couple relevant pages to the NM here but it’s significant for Professor Xavier’s choice to bring in new students.
New Mutants Graphic Novel -- The official name is Marvel Graphic Novel #4. It’s the first appearance of most of the team and how they came together.
New Mutants (V1) 1-3
UXM 167 -- During the previous issues the X-Men were in space fighting the Brood, this is their return and first time meeting the new students.
NM 4-12
Marvel Team-Up (V1) Annual 6 -- Relevant to future stories.
NM 13
Magik 1-4 -- Miniseries showing Magik’s upbringing shortly before joining the team.
NM 14
UXM 180 -- It’s only the last few pages that lead into NM 15.
NM 15-21
NM Annual 1
NM 22-25
UXM 192
Firestar 1-2 -- Introduction to the character from the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon into comics canon. It takes place over years which is why I cut UXM 193 in between.
UXM 193
Firestar 3-4
NM 26-29
Secret Wars Two #1
NM 30-34
NM Special Edition 1 (1985), UXM Annual 9
UXM 200
NM 35-37
Secret Wars Two #9
NM 38-44
NM Annual 2, UXM Annual 10
NM 45-51
NM Annual 3
NM 52
Fallen Angels (V1) 1-3 -- Miniseries following Sunspot and Warlock. Doesn’t really affect the main title besides those characters not being around for a few issues.
NM 53-54 -- Claremont departs*.
Fallen Angels 4-8
NM 55-57 -- Louise Simonson takes over.
Power Pack 33 — What happens to Warlock and Sunspot after Fallen Angels but before their return to the team.
NM 58-66
NM Annual 4 -- Part of the Evolutionary War event across annuals. Works fine as a solo story.
UXM 231
NM 67-70
X-Terminators 1-3 -- Miniseries mostly following some kids from X-Factor during Inferno. Gives more background to explain what causes Inferno.
NM 71
X-Terminators 4
NM 72-76
X-Factor 41, 42 -- The team briefly stays with the kids from X-Factor (a book also written by Simonson) who will shortly join the team.
NM 77-87 -- Rob Liefeld takes over art duties with 86
NM Annual 5 -- Same as Annual 4 but with Atlantis Attacks.
NM 88-91
NM Summer Special (1990) -- One-shot by Ann Nocenti
NM 92
Days of Future Present: Fantastic Four Annual 23, NM Annual 6, XF Annual 5, UXM Annual 14
NM 93-94
X-Tinction Agenda: UXM 270, NM 95, XF 60, UXM 271, NM 96, XF 61, UXM 272, NM 97, XF 62 -- Louise Simonson departs.
UXM 273 -- XA epilogue and Claremont’s real final issue of the X-Men. After this he was relegated to scripting a few issues before leaving altogether.
NM 98-100 -- At this point Liefeld/Nicieza take over on script/plot/pencil duties and set up the team’s reboot into X-Force.
Kings of Pain: NM Annual 7, New Warriors Annual 1, UXM Annual 15, X-Factor Annual 6 -- Has a New Mutants annual despite happening after the change to X-Force; I guess they figured it was too soon for that title. Focuses on X-Force and New Warriors with backups about Freedom Force. Totally skippable unless you’re reading those.
If you want to follow Wolfsbane you have the option of reading the Muir Island Saga (UXM 278, 279, XF 69, UXM 280, XF 70) that leads into X-Factor 71 where that team is completely remade, or just jump to XF 71. If you want to follow Sam and Boom-Boom continue with X-Force 1 If you want to follow other New Mutants you’ll probably have to check wiki because it’s a while before they’re around again. See also:
*New Mutants Forever 1-5 -- Out of continuity mini from 2010 by Claremont, set after 54, imagining the story he would’ve told had he never left and providing a chance to close some threads left hanging by his departure. Best read after you've finished the list, like a deleted scene or bonus content.
