100 days of Deathduo!

Day 1- Reverse phasmo au! (Also I'm so sorry if the format is weird I don't know how to tumblr)

Content warning for spooky ghost stuff, suspense. Also it's not beta'd haha

The breaker was off. Which was a bit annoying, but the previous owners clearly hadn’t been there in a while. Clover isn’t surprised the electrical company had turned it off to save power. That didn’t change the fact that it was a little bit… inconvenient. Still, she was excited. If all goes well, this house is hers. Her own place. It may be a bit rundown, if the torn wallpaper and worn floorboards were anything to go by, and that couch had certainly seen much better days, but it was hers. And renovations could always be made. She had plenty of money left over due to just how cheap the house was.

The house was cold, likely due to the breaker, and Clover shivered as she went to look for it, taking out her phone flashlight so she wouldn’t trip over anything. It must have been in either the utility room or the attic, right? Or was it called the storage area. It was somewhere upstairs, she remembered seeing it on the floorplan of the house. It could also be in the backyard, but Clover hadn’t seen anything back there when she had first investigated the house. She smiled as she remembered seeing the for sale sign and peeking into the windows while imagining what could be. She had bought it that same day.

Clover coughed from the layers of dust that was scattered around, and she pulled her backpack in front of her in order to dig around for her waterbottle, taking a swig from it when she found it. This house needed a ton of cleaning. Which was fine. It was hers! Still, next time she may have to bring a mask, or something. Breathing in all of this dust was probably not the greatest for her health, if she had to guess. She passed by the stairs next to the front door, thinking that the utility room was the more likely place for a breaker to warm the cold rooms.

The house wasn’t very big, but it didn’t stop Clover from getting lost, finding herself in a bedroom instead of the kitchen she expected. Which would have led to the utility room. The light from her phone bounced off of the walls, showing the pictures of the previous owners that lived here. She didn’t quite know what happened to them, or why they left. It did make her curious, but she figured they were likely evicted, or just had somewhere to go. Perhaps they thought that the house was too isolated, alone from everyone, with nothing but a plain barren field nearby. But that was what Clover loved about it. Come next spring, she was sure it would be filled with crops that she could farm. It had an irrigation system built in, and she was excited for the different pace in life that it was sure to bring. Peaceful, hopefully, away from the monotonous and stressful work environment of a corporate office job.

Did she know how to actually farm? Well. No. But surely it couldn’t be too hard, right? It was just. Planting the seeds. And waiting for them to grow.

Clover’s thoughts became distracted when the beam of light caught on something shiny. Upon further investigation, she realized that there was a flip phone on the dresser, covered by a layer of dust. The people here must have really hated this place, to just pack up and leave like that. It was a mystery. Maybe Clover would try to figure out the reason why it was abandoned so much, and try to get some of the pictures and mementos back to the people they belonged to.

But for now, the breaker. If she could stop getting so turned around in the dark. Clover tried to recall the floorplan given to her on the release forms. If she was in the bedroom, then she just had to make her way to the living room, and then the- aha! The kitchen. She knew where she was going the entire time. Clover’s flashlight caught on jars of old pickles and unopened soda cans that she was definitely gonna get rid of. They had probably been there for ages. Luckily, nothing seemed to have rotted out in the open, which Clover was grateful for. The chill of the house probably helped, even after all of these years.

She found the door to the utility room easily, but groaned when all she saw was a dust covered tool rack and an old mattress. So much for finally being warm. She sighed, shining her phone at the wall once more in hopes that she may have just missed the breaker, but alas, it was not there. Time to head upstairs to the storage room, unless it was in somewhere completely unexpected, like the master bedroom or something. That would be ridiculous though. Who would put an electrical breaker in a bedroom?

Clover managed to make her way back to the front of the house much easier than she was able to find the kitchen, luckily. The upstairs was even smaller than the bottom part of the house, and she was pretty sure she remembered correctly, so hypothetically it shouldn’t take too long to find the utility room. Hypothetically.

The stairs creaked under her feet, and Clover shivered a bit as she turned right. Because she was pretty sure that was the correct room. Wasn’t heat supposed to rise, or something? If anything, the air had gotten slightly colder up here than downstairs, but Clover knew that it was the barely spring chill seeping into the house. Come summertime, she was sure it would be sweltering in here. She should probably make sure that the air conditioning unit was here. And the heater, probably. Most likely.

She was. In a bedroom. Not a storage room. This house was so confusing, but she was sure the floorplan said it was this way. Spotting another door, Clover made her way over, hoping that it was the correct place. She was grateful that the house had wooden door knobs, seeing as she could feel the chill through them. Metal would have been even colder. She smiled when she saw the metal of the breaker glinting from her flashlight.

As Clover stepped in the room, she felt the temperature drop, a chill running over her shoulders as she stood in the doorway, confused. It was so much colder than the rest of the house, and it made her uneasy. Or perhaps that was the unnatural creaking of the floorboards, or the many items scattered about the room that had disturbed the layer of dust on the floor.

It was probably just a broken board that let in the outside air, right? Maybe the wind had knocked over that hammer. Stealing her resolve, Clover started moving towards the breaker, clutching tightly onto her water bottle with one hand and her flashlight with the other. It was fine. She would just get the breaker on, and save this room for when she was actually able to see. And be warm. Which sounded so nice right now. Warm and away from this room.

Clover screamed when a pale, almost transparent face suddenly appeared in front of her, yelling at her with an unnatural screech, and she scrambled back, away from the cold breath of air that washed over her as the face got closer to her. She threw her water bottle at the, the apparition, or creature that had showed up and ignored the prickles on her arm as she raced outside the storage room, through the bedroom, down the stairs and outside to her car, only daring to breathe when she had safely locked the door and double checked to make sure there was no one, or no thing, in there with her.

She was pretty sure she figured out the reason why the previous owners abandoned the place, now.

i made some kaijo redesigns bc ive been thinking about the show more recently, character sheets and rambles under the cut :>

first off!! queen my beloved (<- absolutely no bias whatsoever)

i actually think her canon design is really cute, but honestly with her whole swordfighting thing i feel like it would be better if she had an outfit that communicated that well. i made the poncho (cape thing?? idk) be attachable to either sides of the blouse because i just forgot to stick to one side, thats my excuse for not redrawing queens design sheet lmao

next up!! good lird (im sorry joker ily but. honey 😭)

hes supposed to be a parallel to the joker card but he looks more like a magician??? unfortunately im attached to his canon design no matter how much i hate it so i wanted to keep the whole suit thing. i wanted to add some jester motifs without having to change his hat, so i swapped his cape for a tailcoat and added the classic duo colors you see in jester designs (also just want to rant about clover getting the jester hat for some reason???? that might be a protagonist-antagonist parallel in the story but its been a while since ive watched it so im not sure)

i really dont like how jumbled the palette in his canon design is because!! theres too much going on!!! i remember seeing an alternate version of his suit in one of the kj valentines magazine pages, and it had a really nice velvet color which honestly suits him better

lastly!! the reason why there isnt a sheet for spade is because honestly i think his design is really good as is?? i didnt really know what else to add because his design communicates his character really well and he has a pretty good color palette

i might try to redesign more characters when i have the time but ngl this is just an excuse for me to redesign joker 💀

This is definitely very late, and I am sorry about that. Gender-neutral reader.

Trey Clover

To say he was surprised by the two large baskets that you brought to Heartslabyul, a third being carried by Grim, would be fairly accurate. He was actually making you something as well, but you seemed to have beaten him to the punch. The smell of freshly baked goods wafted through the air, and he was actually pretty excited about whatever was in the three baskets. He was going to grab the rest of the dorm… until you stated that they were all just for him.

Now, he’s kind of flustered, and he goes through each of the baskets absolutely surprised by how many sweets and treats there are. Not just that, but most of them are themed or have candied violets in them. He only mentioned that he liked candied violets in passing, so the fact that you remembered was heartwarming. He took one of the violets off of the little bundt cake you had made him, and it was so sweet and delicious.

Ruggie Bucchi

He could smell the three baskets of donuts from miles away, and he immediately ran up to you as you were approaching his room. It took him all of his self-restraint to not just tear up the baskets for the delectable sweets. You held out one of the baskets and gave it to him, and you blessed his ears by saying, “These are for my favorite hyena for Valentine’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day, Ruggie!”

You were just so cute that the poor hyena went red before he set the basket down and showered your face in kisses. Then he went to dig through the first basket, seeing not just donuts, but other baked goods as well. He picked up a glazed donut and devoured it, then picked up another one to hold to your lips to make sure that you had a taste of what you made for him. You both were about to start feeding each other, had Grim not stumbled in with the third basket.

Jade Leech

The eel heard the commotion in the dormitory between you and his brother and went to investigate. Turns out that you were having trouble carrying all of the baskets to Jade, and you asked Floyd to help. Floyd, however, wasn’t going to do something for nothing, so he wanted to know what was inside the baskets. You refused to tell him, but that was when your boyfriend entered the scene.

Well, there were a bunch of sweets in the baskets that you had made for Jade, and the tweel found it so heartwarming that his beloved would toil away just to make him something (or quite a few things) for a human holiday called Valentine’s Day. Also, do not worry, as he did make sure that he got something for you in return. It was a keychain with your initials + J.L. in a heart with an arrow through it, as well as a bouquet of flowers.

Jamil Viper

He was also making something for you when you came to Scarabia with three baskets filled with great-smelling foods. He was taken by surprise, as he didn’t think you would go through all of this effort just to be able to give him a gift. He took the baskets from you and placed them on the counter, and as he looked through them he saw bunches of sweets. Luckily, he was making a meal for the two of you, so you both had a nice and quiet Valentine’s Day meal.

The gesture did make him feel lighthearted as well as lightheaded. For once, he had something, or someone, that Kalim didn’t have, all to himself. As the realization sank in while you were eating, he pulled you into his arms and thanked you for all that you have done for him. You make him feel appreciated for all of his hard work, something that he’s not used to, and he doesn’t want to ever take it or you for granted.

So, anyone else just get viscerally gutted by the Volume 9 Epilogue?

*spoilers below*

I was crying a minute into it like holy shit. Nora’s reactions to everything are just so, SO RAW. Ren missing Jaune and doing his fucking BEST to hold everything together, Winter trying to live up to her role as the Winter Maiden, “You would be so disappointed in us” - fucking CUTS my soul.

CVFY!! SSSN!! The dynamics of Vacuo hating Atlas for disrupting their lives, the way Willow and Whitley are doing their damn best to change for the better and help those around them, as are the Ace Ops. Qrow supporting Willow while she tries to quit drinking! Qrow honoring Clover and Ruby by staying optimistic.

Oh the mural, the mural oh god. It hurts so good.

VALE IS GONE??? Like SHIT? Salem is truly on a rampage now, which is fucking terrifying.

Ofc, Raven coming through to reunite everyone. Nora, Ren, and Oscar’s reactions to seeing RWBY literally fucking killed me like, Nora’s gasp just gutted me.

One thing this epilogue made me realize - do, do Tai, Kali and Ghira even know what happened???? Jaune’s family??? Like we of course got *some* of the direct responses to the situation for Ruby, Yang, Weiss, and Jaune, cause they all had someone in Atlas and now Vacuo who knew what was happening. It seems global communications would be working if Amity is actually up now, but like, DID ANYONE TELL KALI AND GHIRA? Like absolutely no direct mourning for Blake which has me like, does anyone outside of Vacuo even KNOW?!

If Vale is gone, what about Patch?! Like WHERE IS TAI???? SIR??? COME BACK??

This also has me imagining Kali and Ghira weeping over the loss of their daughter who they JUST GOT BACK. Like Blake has been back in their lives for so little time, and now she was like technically dead??? Imagine the pain they’d be feeling. Oh god that hurts to imagine. I love the Belladonnas if that isn’t clear enough already ;-;

Fuck. I’m not dumb enough to expect any sort of a proper ending for RWBY, but I fucking hope so desperately that something comes through and the IP is swept up by someone capable and caring, that the vision is carried through to the end and we get some sort of closure for this story. Until then, whether it be the death of our beloved show, or the revival through some external force, I’ll be over here soaking up fan works to try and fill the gaping hole in my chest.

I have some anime recommendations.

I have STRUGGLED this year to find things to watch. I don't particularly like romance - it saps the storyline - and I like action/comedy. It's why I've always had a taste for sports anime.

So... this is just a starting point for the lost souls who are just after something, and don't know where to start. This is in no particular order, although prob related to how recently I watched it...

1. The Apothecary Diary

Set in a land in the far east, Maomao is sold to the back palace. From there she solves mysteries.

This is honestly such a great show! Intrigue, engaging characters, and you could absolutely read Maomao as aroace. This was a stand out.

I also love the opening song. Very Shakira-esque.

2. Another stand out was Death Mount, Death Play

I'm not a fan of super violence, so I almost didn't make it past ep 1... but I ADORED this show. The main character is amazing, the shark in the credits is so cute, the story is many faceted, and I seriously adored it! highly reccomend.

3. I wasn't expecting to enjoy God of High School.

Now, it absolutely does feel like it needs a second season, but it ended in a way that felt okay too... it is based on aKorean wrbcomic, but has japanes va's. It's an over powered fighting anime, with mystery powers and a very likable main character. It's got super baddies to hate, and it does edge into too violent for my taste, but still sat down and watched my way through it xD

4. Ah... my beloved sports anime. I'm gonna add Haikyuu! And Kuroko no Basket here. I mean... both are fandoms I write for xD

Haikyuu!! Is great as there are no real bad guys, and lots of growth all round.

Kuroko is basically magical high school boys who play high school basketball, but same thing: lots of character growth, lots of friendship.

One thing I love is how the boys cry? I mean that in a they are disappointed when they lose and aren't told to suck it up. I always appreciate that!

5. It's been hard to avoid isekai animes, and some of them are less than engaging, it is true. But some? Some are delightful!

5a So, I got reincarnated as a slime is one of my faves.

It's just... nice? Satisfying? It doesn't reaaaaally push any boundaries (although I love almost everything about the final arc). There's so many loveable characters, and it's alot of fun. It helps I've always loved slimes, so this overpowered one isno exception.

5b why Raeliana ended up at the dukes mansion is, yes a romance.

But its also fun. Our protagonist is reincarnated into a gane, as a character that they know will die. And they don't want to die! And so... this isthat story.

5c. This lead me down the reincarnated in a game pathway, and I came across My next life as a villainess: all roads lead to doom

You know those really dumb lovable characters? Well, I love Catarina. She is charming with a harem comorised if almost everyone she grew up with, and there's just something so delightful! I laughed outloud as much as i groaned at this one!

Older ones I reccomend:

Natsume's Book of friends

Slice of life about a boy who can see spirits. Definitely leans towards melancholy, but really leans into found family

2. Black Clover

Look. Get past Asta screaming in the first 20 eps and you've got some enjoyable action. The characterisation is

- He was born of one of Rook's many ✨extravagant✨ experiments! Trey had to beg him to use a subject that wasn't like... a cat or something in case it went wrong.

- Spends their time wandering into random classes and trying to follow whatever lesson is being taught.

- Upon learning what last names are, adopted his because Rook and Trey were the first people he saw after transforming.

- He also refers to them as his fathers occasionally.

- Has shown to be magically capable but hasn't expanded on it.

- Apparently, he can communicate with flowers and most other plants, but he doesn't seem to like them because "they gossip too much".

- Absolutely loves to sing and has a surprisingly beautiful voice. She often sings her sentences, though specifically for Riddle and sometimes on Vil's request.

- He has a knack for reading body language and emotions, and will often mirror what the person he's talking to is feeling.

- Ortho is his absolute best friend.

- When inside, they're usually sleepy unless it's well-lit. Will otherwise spent their time pressed against a windowpane.

- Trey dyes Rose's hair if he attends unbirthday parties (via Doodle Suit/Paint the Roses)

- Usually isn't shy, but if she gets embarrassed will hide her face.

- Vil buys him custom outfits. Absolutely spoiled.

- He sleeps in whatever dorm will accept him for the night.

- They have an unusual amount of sharp teeth, and sometimes accidentally bites their own tongue and lip to the point of bleeding. Trey gave them tooth caps for this, though they don't always wear them.

- Along with his teeth, his nails are naturally sharp.

- Has a soft spot for romantics and love stories.

Seeing the love you and your wife have for each other absolutely makes my day. It always makes me happy.

The Owl House - Accurate depictions of neurodivergency and anti colonization messages my beloved. I only started watching it as a way to distract myself from 2020 and left changed for the better as a person.

Miles Morales - Comic book heroes in general but Marvel especially has played a big and important role in my life. It was the first way my dad and I were able to connect but the number one moment was when Miles was created. My dad grew up as a Marvel fan and he liked Spider-Man but he got so excited when Miles was introduced to Marvel. It also made me happy because it was one of the first times in my young life when I felt like I could be Spider-Man.

Black Clover - This one kinda goes hand in hand with the first one. But honestly getting bored and deciding to watch Black Clover was one the best things to happen to me. It’s a good show, I love the “rich people suck” message, it has a lot of my favorite characters, but also doing that lead me to meeting you, Alex, and the others.

Good music - It’s a simple joy but quite amazing. I love when I find a good song and let it run the course in my mind for a while.

Since Lottie is Cherie coded, I would like to request a HC where Anthony is lowkey crushing on her but she's just too fucking oblivious because she's nice to everyone and he's Ben's brother! Of course I like him! I like Eloise and Colin as well!

So Anthony is kinda dying inside each time Whistledown describes her as a possible match for Benedict, but he refuses to ask his younger brother about it because No One Must Know He Has Feelings Ever, so he's just as confused as Clover while Benedict silently enjoys watching him squirm when Lottie is always around or Benedict goes to her place, or they immediately go out to promenade together and Holy shit he cannot do this another year.

52. favorite font? i LOVE the Oswald font. my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE. it's so circular and symetric and it looks good EVERYWHERE (outside of like. a thesis. or something formal like an email). everytime i wanted to use writing on my digital drawings as a kid i would use the Oswald font. Over the past two and a half years, I have amassed a huge backlog of games and extensively catalogued the ones I’ve played. It started out as a way to keep myself sane during the pandemic, but since then it’s basically just become the way I play video games. I’ve recently reached the huge milestone of 200 games played using this system, and to commemorate, I thought a list of “Each Zero Escape character as one of those 200 games” would be fun! Let’s go!

(FYI, I kept a tier list and for this post, I’ve only drawn from games I’ve ranked B, A, or S. So yes, these are all recommendations! I played some of them via itch.io, but all of them are available on Steam)

Ace: Contradiction

An FMV detective game with elegantly simple mechanics: you do exactly what the title says and it’s very satisfying. Special mention goes to the pair of shady businessmen you encounter who totally don’t brainwash, kill, or kidnap people wink wink.

Snake: Dicey Dungeons

This is almost entirely based on Light’s codename meaning “snake eyes,” but it was between this and that game you play by blinking so this seemed like the more appropriate choice. A cute and cheeky roguelike deckbuilder played by rolling and assigning dice. The fact that its gameplay is built around basic arithmetic gives me 999 vibes in general!

Santa: Tell Me Why

A choice-consequence adventure game from the makers of the first two Life Is Strange games (LIS2 my beloved, don’t @ me). Two siblings who can communicate telepathically revisit their childhood home and the events leading up to their mother’s death. One of the siblings is a trans man so if you are as Correct about Aoi as I am you know where I’m coming from.

Clover: Chicory: A Colorful Tale

The game where the world is a blank coloring book and you get to fill in the lines. Tells a lovely and relatable story about art, burnout, impostor syndrome and mentorship, although the main reason I’m assigning this to Clover is because it’s just plain adorable. The relationship between Pizza and Chicory also reminds me of her and Alice.

Junpei: Lamplight City

Perhaps aligned more with ZTD Junpei than any other iteration, this is a steampunk point-and-click about a disgraced detective who is haunted by his late partner and can’t rest until he’s avenged his death. The best part of this game is the protagonist’s awesome wife, who, unlike Akane, will actually help you with puzzles sometimes.

Akane: Elsinore

You play as Ophelia. You are stuck in a time loop and must find a way to save yourself and manufacture a happier ending to the tragedy of Hamlet. This is basically tied with Celeste for the title of my favorite video game of all time, and I was delighted to find parallels between it and Akane’s story.

Seven: The Darkside Detective

I love detective games so I had a wealth to choose from when it came to the cop character. I ended up going with this game, a standard point-and-click that is a detective game in name and theming only but is still a lot of fun. A pastiche of Twin Peaks and X-Files with some of the funniest writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, it captures Seven’s zaniness and willingness to believe in the supernatural.

Lotus: Beglitched

A glitzy and girly game full of computer lingo and in-jokes that go over my head. Thankfully you don’t actually need to know a lick of code to enjoy it because the hacking minigames all take the form of really unique and strategic battles.

Kubota: Underhero

An RPG with one of the most wonderfully convoluted premises ever. Put simply, you’re a villain’s henchman who must play double agent when you’re magically chosen to be the next great hero. Kubota certainly doesn’t fit the “secret hero” angle, but a whole game about an underling seemed appropriate.

Sigma: Milkmaid of the Milky Way

A point-and-click (can you tell I love those?) in which a dairy farmer’s favorite cow is abducted by aliens and she must sneak onto the spacecraft to rescue it. Now, that absolutely delightful premise could work with just about any VLR character; I don’t want to spoil the game, but something else does happen that rings very close to Sigma’s story specifically.

Phi: Downwell

I really expected Phi to get a platformer, with all her soaring and kicking! Downwell is kind of a platformer, I guess, although really it’s more of a free-fall simulator and most of the things you land on die. You can either shoot enemies with your “gunboots” or step on them to kill them - killing things with your feet, very Phi.

Alice: Paradise Killer

A quirky open-world detective game where everyone is impractically hot. I’ve truly never felt more like a detective than I did while playing this game, but you can’t talk about it without talking about the style. The world is bizarre, the music is all vaporwave, and again. You, the investigator, are improbably sexy, and so is every suspect you interview.

Dio: Cult of the Lamb

The cute and cozy roguelike where you start your own cult and smite nonbelievers. I feel like I don’t really need to describe this one further, y’all know it already.

Luna: Cloud Gardens

An art/puzzle game about helping plants reclaim an abandoned, decaying urban environment. Has both a story mode which I completed, and a sandbox mode I didn’t try in which you can just grow gardens to your heart’s content.

Quark: Carto

A really cute puzzle game where you manipulate the very ground you stand on using a map. The story is about a little girl trying to find her grandmother, so it’s very Quark in both aesthetic and story.

Kyle: Hades

The mythological roguelike about hating your dad a whole lot. I don’t feel like I need to explain this one further, either, as everyone has talked about it at length including me on this very blog, but I’ll have you know that I’ve played it for hundreds of hours and it’s solidly my third favorite video game of all time.

Carlos: The Rewinder

This is the most recent game I’ve played; I haven’t finished it yet and I can’t even say for sure that it will be top-tier in the rankings, but I’m really liking it so far and since I wanted a puzzle game about time manipulation for Carlos it was between this and Braid. And as far as I know, The Rewinder doesn’t have a creator with the absolutely rancid vibes of Jonathan Blow.

Sean: 2064: Read Only Memories

A visual novel where you solve a mystery in a cyberpunk world with the help of the world’s first fully sentient AI. The AI is a precious baby baby baby; if you love Sean, you will love Turing.

Delta: Evergate

A gorgeous puzzle platformer about the afterlife and a fraught sibling relationship that transcends time. I loved this game so much that I 100-percented all the collectibles and time trials, which is something I never do. Made me want to call my brother.

Eric: Boyfriend Dungeon

Of course, my much maligned fave gets paired with a game that also gets a lot of undue hate but nonetheless has my entire heart. It’s a dating sim for all of the thirsty simps out there that’s also a roguelike about literally attacking your inner demons and fears with crazy impractical weapons. This choice has nothing to do with a certain Boyfriend Dungeon character who gives all Erics a bad name.

Mira: Carrion

Going through all these games I was surprised that this was the only real “play as the villain” power fantasy on the list. You might have heard of this one described as a reverse horror movie; you play as a biological weapon, or an alien, or something, that has escaped containment and it’s just about eating scientists and soldiers in an explosion of pixelly gore.

Diana: There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension

I won’t be all coy like every other reviewer: this is a video game, a point-and-click about a sentient computer program who really does not want you to use it. It’s really funny and full of meta-references, but the reason I chose it for Diana is because this game is actually a tragic love story not unlike SigDi. I’m not joking about that.

And there you have it, twenty-two great games, one for each Zero Escape character. This is just a silly post but, sincerely, check some of them out if they sound interesting to you!
