This avatar, fueled by idiocy, hatred and ignorance, makes regularly the rounds, each and every time we dare to celebrate something, anything really. It serves three tribes and serves them well: the Congregation of Domestic Bliss (aka Taiters). The Data Lounge crowd. And the Disgruntled Harpies, who once were some of the most fervent Ginger Jesus worshippers, but whose hopes, dreams and trust wrecked on the shores of Quarantein Ha-wa-wee.

It is the proper of calumny to leave a pungent, persistent trail wherever it fumbles around. Calomniez, calomniez, il en restera toujours quelque chose, Beaumarchais once wrote. Calumny, calumny, something's gonna stick - in a very lazy, but dependable translation. This one is particularly vicious, because it sounds coherent: he trades in make-believe, lots of actors are, precedents exist. And my favorite: it explains everything (fun fact: it doesn't even start to cover the shitshow).

Four exhibits should put us out of this dumpster. Chronologically and comparatively:

Exhibit A: Rough Beginnings (2009)

This one is the most touted on Tumblr, by that horrible woman Queen Puff thought was the same person as Paul C. (and was probably wrong). I suppose this person must have watched Nicholas de Jongh's Plague Over England, a play essentially narrating a scandalous episode of John Gielgud's biography, with a heavy-handed focus on homophobia in Britain during the 50's.

He got naked on stage! He kissed a man! Oh, oh, oh... the rumor! the scandal! (insert domestic fire shrieks) My eyes! Quick, let's fetch the smelling salts! And chlorine! I need a good rinse!

You would imagine Sodom & Gomorrah Ltd on that stage, eh?

Tumblrettes United of the disgruntled sort, did your talkative friend ever show you this devastating Guardian chronicle, signed by their in-house critic, John M. Morrison on February 27th 2009 (https://www.theguardian.com/stage/theatreblog/2009/feb/26/de-jongh-plague-over-england) ?

Aside the already very, very tired stock stories purporting that "my dog's aunt knew Heughan and yeah, he was so, so, so gay I could cry", all you have (I checked!) is 1 (one) absolutely dubious BTS pic taken on the set of that terrible dud, Young Alexander, shot in Egypt, circa 2010. Prominently featuring S's waxed calves (see? gay AF!), an unbecoming, supremely effeminate white tunic and *gasp* a bong (no comments were made on that one, a pity). How the hell do you want him to look but, pardon my French, queer as a three-dollar bill? You clearly have no idea about sexual ambiguity as social norm in Ancient Greece and also no clue about that fascinating Alexander himself, his life and his yeah, blatant, documented bisexuality.

Take one of the most interesting sources (yeah, only serious ones, with FACTS) of the Late Antiquity, a guy named Athenaeus of Naucratis. He left us The Banquet of the Learned, a fifteen-volume encyclopedic compilation on the pleasures of eating and drinking and doing it in style, along with some juicy gossip. What do we read? Alexander's mom, dad and tutor (Aristotle, my favorite Greek philosopher, along with Diogenes) are worried he finally might not really be into women, after all. The future of the Macedonian Kingdom itself is at stake (that watery semen made me choke on my Coke) and this is a very serious affair of the state. The most cost-effective and discreet solution is to handsomely pay that Callixeina courtesan from (famous for pin-ups) Thessaly and be done with it.

Apparently, it worked, not without some resistance. If you ever have the curiosity to go on that (in)famous Wikipedia, you will find a whole page dedicated to Alexander the Great's personal life. It reads exactly like the ABC, do-re-mi summer soccer mercato, feat. the Fitness Harem. One of the major joys of Classical studies is to realize we really didn't invent anything new.

Exhibit D: A French example - the case of Michel Serrault

The 1979 comedy La Cage aux Folles, later adapted for the US public under the name of Birds of a Feather (that Robin Williams/Nathan Lane forgettable gay movie) is absolutely representative for the live and let live French approach to homosexuality, ever since it was decriminalized by the revolutionary Penal Code of 1791. This is why I chose Michel Serrault, one of its two leads, to illustrate my Gay Anon post. Not to mention Serrault was a genius who could play absolutely anyone, from a retired hitman in Matthieu Kassowitz' Assassin(s) to Zaza Napoli.

This balding, ageing, cantankerous drag queen (sound is horrific, but you've got English subtitles - granted, you lose about 30% of the hysterical hilarity in translation, but it is what it is), as seen here in a domestic scene opposite her partner, played by notorious womanizer Ugo Tognazzi:

By the limp standards of Mordor, Serrault must have been a French LGBTQ+ institution, given his stellar, flawless acting, isn't it?

Azul's Character Development In White Day Letters

White Day 2022 letters just got released today, and I'm losing my marbles. I'm losing my fucking marbles over Ashengrotto as we speak I'm really awed by how much attention they put into the fact that these characters developed. Letters of those like Sebek and Silver still reflect that they haven't gone through complete change because their time to shine has yet to come, but there are those characters whose letters reflect how much they changed. Azul is one of them.

Just a disclaimer that the 2022 White Day letters literally just came out today, and this post will have Azul's 2022 letter completely, so if you don't want to see it yet, please scroll through this post. Anyway, this will be under a cut.

So here's Azul's 2022 White Day letter. I'm typing out the contents because some people wish for the images of their letters to not be spread.

My boon companion— What a lovely gift this is. Thank you kindly. If you're ever in need of anything, don't be afraid to reach out. And just to be clear, that's not in return for the gift—after all, I've accepted this as a token of your sentiment. That said, I'm willing to take it somewhat into account with any future bargains we might make.

Now okay, from the first word, you can already tell that Azul is a lot more sincere in this letter than the last. To compare, here's Azul's 2021 White Day letter.

My dear friend, Thank you so very much for this absolutely wonderful present. I am positively overjoyed to receive such an affectionate gift. When you have the time, please do drop by the Mostro Lounge. Present the enclosed card at the door and you can enjoy a complimentary drink on me.

Now when I mean first word, I don’t mean the way he addresses you but the first two sentences.

2021 letter opens up with: Thank you so very much for this absolutely wonderful present. I am positively overjoyed to receive such an affectionate gift.

2022 letter, on the other hand, opens up with: What a lovely gift this is. Thank you kindly.

The opening sentence of the 2021 letter has the charm dialed up. You can practically taste the sickening sweetness in those words. You especially see this in the phrases “thank you so very much”, “absolutely wonderful present”, “positively overjoyed”, and “receive such an affectionate gift”. In those phrases, Azul used quite a number of unnecessary words. It ends up giving off the impression similar to someone wearing too many accessories in their outfit in an attempt to look ‘charming’. It results in him sounding fake around you just to impress or make you happy, which can also result in you questioning whether he did like the gift or not. It also gives off a kind of haughtiness, especially in the thank you portion (though that could also be the way I imagine him saying it in my head. I always hear him going “thank you oh so much” just from reading that).

But the 2022 letter opens up with something more concise yet sincere. It still has that Azul charm™️, especially with the way he phrases the first sentence. He goes “what a lovely gift this is”, which could have also been phrased as “your gift is lovely” or “the gift you gave was lovely”, sentences that technically convey the same message, but the last two don’t have Azul’s voice, aka it doesn’t match his character as well. However, it’s not dolled up in unnecessary words. He found your gift lovely, plain and simple. And even in the way he says thank you, it’s not excessive. It’s a simple “thank you”. There’s no thought to be fake to impress, he’s expressing his thoughts with no unnecessary words. He likes your gift, and he actually means it.

Moving on to the next part, this is the part where Azul's character development really shines.

In the 2021 letter, Azul says:

When you have the time, please do drop by the Mostro Lounge. Present the enclosed card at the door and you can enjoy a complimentary drink on me.

While in the 2022 letter, Azul says:

If you're ever in need of anything, don't be afraid to reach out. And just to be clear, that's not in return for the gift—after all, I've accepted this as a token of your sentiment. That said, I'm willing to take it somewhat into account with any future bargains we might make.

Azul has the mindset where he thinks people are always out to get what they want. They do favors for people or give others gifts to get something in return. Kindness for the sake of it is not a concept that he entertains. It's why he always tries to "return the favor", as he thinks that he'd be indebted to someone if they do something good for him. You can especially see how his mindset on this works in his PE vignette.

Jamil: Then we'll stick to the basics. There's a trick to it, all right? Set your broom on the ground first. Azul: What do you want? Jamil: What? Azul: I'm sure you aren't teaching me that trick for free. The world doesn't work that way. So? What do you want? Jamil: It's not like I was offering. The coach told me to do it, so I'm doing it. Azul: So you're doing this out of the goodness of your heart? You truly want nothing? As if I could buy such a blatant lie. I have no wish to be in debt to you. I can only imagine what ridiculous demand you'll make of me when this is over! [PE Azul vignette, EN]

In the 2021 letter, that mindset can be seen when he tells you that you can enjoy a complimentary drink on him, aka you can enjoy a free drink from the Mostro Lounge. You gave him a gift, so in return, he'll give you a free beverage. He doesn't even hesitate or ask you if you want it. Azul just offers it to you because he doesn't want to be indebted to you.

But in the 2022 letter, Azul lets you know that you can reach out to him for help, and he adds that it isn't in return for your gift. In fact, he says, and I'm going to put in quotes because this needs to be emphasized: "After all, I've accepted this as a token of your sentiment." He recognizes that what you gave him is a damn gift and one given out of thought and not given out of expectation. He's one step closer to learning that not everyone's out to get what they want even if at the expense of others. It's not like Azul totally changed either. He still adds that he's still going to think about your gift to him in possible deals, so he still has that mindset to pay what you're owed. And that's good character development because yes, he's going through change, yes, he's growing, but that change doesn't mean that he's gonna be a totally different person. It's like how real people act. There will be experiences we go through that will make us reflect on ourselves and see what we can do to improve, but we're not gonna do a sudden 180. A large part of our personality will still remain the same.

Now finally, let's talk about the way Azul addresses you. "My dear friend" versus "My boon companion".

I'm gonna be honest here, the first time I saw "my boon companion", I experienced a lot of second-hand embarrassment. LIKE .. this is definitely a me thing, but 'boon' is Not a pretty word in my eyes and it sounds goofy almost. I even thought of the words 'boom' (as in, boom in business) and 'tycoon'. 😭 Don't get me wrong, it's still is pretty goofy, and I still get a bit embarrassed, BUT LET ME EXPLAIN WHY I'M NOW IN FUCKING SHAMBLES OVER THE DAMN BOON COMPANION

I will always love how Azul calls you 'my dear friend'. Azul calling you 'my dear' is one of my biggest weaknesses, and just thinking of 'friend' as a placeholder for your name really got me simping hard. LIKE... LIKE COME ON, IT'S SUCH A CLASSY PET NAME THAT'S ALSO SO TENDER AND INTIMATE, AND URSULA CANONICALLY SAYS "my dear sweet child" TO ARIEL IN LITTLE MERMAID, SO IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE FOR AZUL TO CALL YOU "MY DEAR".

But there is a certain distance to "my dear friend". Like yes, it's such a sweet way to address you, but that's the thing. It's sweet, and when you pair that with how caked up the rest of his message is, it does come off as fake as well.

Now boon companion. It sounds embarrassing... BUT. It's so dorky. And in a good way. But here's the best part. If you look up the meaning of boon, it essentially means a timely blessing. So if you look at "my boon companion" again, Azul is calling you a blessed companion. He's calling you a person that he's grateful to have in his life. He's calling you a blessing. And there's nothing faked in here or what. You've been a good friend to him that he's so grateful for. It’s one thing to be called a dear friend. But it’s another to be called a friend that someone is grateful for.

Games: -A Space for the Unbound: chill fetch quests in a small town in rural Indonesia, finish your summer bucket list with your gf, pet cats, dive into the subconsciousnesses of your neighbours!

-Ender Lilies: metroidvania platformer with some tight controls like Hollow Knight, gorgeous artwork and music, you play as Lily, a young amnesiac priestess trying to purify the spirits of the dead and stop the plague ridden rain that won't stop falling, you're small and weak but you recruit different spirits to fight with you but it never feels overwhelming or bloated, really enjoyed it

-Signalis: survival horror as an android looking for her gf, she made a promise and she's going. to. fulfil. it. Dystopian future in space with lots of good old rusty machine body horror, strange senses of time and memory and there's some puzzles in there too.

-Sunless Sea: Victorian London was moved underground by bats. Don't worry about it. Go sail the seas and try and turn a profit without losing your mind from the Horrors ^.^ (deceptively a lot of reading in this, plays like a management sim meets VN)

-Omori: 4 years ago Something happened. Omori dreams his days away in his room, carefully not thinking about that Something. Some of the game is in his colourful dream worlds and some out in the real world. Fights are always tinged with emotional rock paper scissors as how you, your friends and enemies feel will affect the fight! He's about to move house and an old friend comes knocking on the door...

Books: -Va11-Hall-A: I...don't know whether to put a VN under games or books so I'm putting it between the two. You're a barista in a cyberpunk kinda world, you listen to patrons while making them drinks and chat. (It's chill but sometimes gets pretty heavy and has a lot of mature topics in it for the record.) -Deathless by Cathrynne M. Valente: an alternate history book that has one foot in the Russian Revolution and the other in fairytale. Marya Morevna marries Koschei the Deathless, and goes back to his kingdom. She makes friends with various folklore creatures, checks in on her sisters who all married birds and her old and new lives begin to collide.

-The Locked Tomb trilogy by Tamsyn Muir: sci-fi necromancers vie to become the next right bony hand of God, first book is a murder mystery, second is a grim tale by a survivor of the first but something is Wrong and you know it is, third is an oddly domestic political tragedy and I loved them all so much, cannot recommend the audiobooks in particular enough (as the first is a murder mystery, all the voices the narrator does are both incredibly well done but let me pinpoint exactly who was speaking even when I couldn't remember their names, also she voiced Daniella in Haunting Ground!)

-The Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch: small orphan becomes a conman in fantasy Italy. Ends up being drawn into some political intrigue and fucks around finds out, frequently!

-Children of Time: Spiders! Once upon a time an arrogant scientist decided to infect monkey with a virus that would encourage rapid evolution within cooperative species but...it reaches jumping spiders. They have their own form of sign language with vibrational tappy patterns against the ground and wiggling their palps! Scientist's consciousness has melded with an AI and is waiting for her monkeys to become intelligent enough to contact her

Misc: -Dungeon Meshi: do you want to learn about the ecosystem of a dungeon while also figuring out how to cook the creatures inside and watch a guy with a monster special interest live his absolute best life? Yeah you do! (I'm really enjoying this rn so ye)

-Mabel: podcast about a home health carer for an old lady who's only living relative, Mabel, is missing. Anna, the nurse, starts leaving her voicemails like a diary and slowly gets drawn into family secrets, fairy logic and goes exploring places she shouldn't (this one does not shy away from heavy topics including serious child abuse and its effects so if that's not for you then leave this one be)

Recommend dinosaur media besides Jurassic Park?

Dinotopia: All the books are super fun, but the first and last are the best. Just some rambling, cozy journeys through an imagined land of prehistoric beasts and eclectic architecture. The middle two books are still great in terms of visuals, but they lean too much into narrative stuff and I don't think that's Gurney's strong point. The writing feels a lot more like a child's first chapter book. Maybe that's what he was going for, I'm not sure.

Xenozoic Tales: Long time fans of the blog will at this point be tired of me recommending it, but I'm not going to stop because most people I talk to (even other terminally-online SFF artists) still haven't read it. It's obviously super pulpy but it really grows into itself toward the end and is able to handle some more mature ideas without ever taking itself too seriously. Highly recommend.

An Alphabet of Dinosaurs: Just a great collection of Wayne Barlowe's paleoart. It's a 10-minute read and it's aimed at kids but you're buying it for the art and its one of the only Barlowe books you can reliably pick up for less than $10 so I'd say it's worth it. Good chance your library may have it, too.

Dinosaurs by Thomas R Holtz Jr: Very accessible non-fiction work on dinosaur biology and cladistics. It's probably a bit dated now (came out in 2007) and the art is very hit-or-miss (about half the illustrations are obvious products of the era of early digital art when everyone was photobashing and throwing these awful digital textures onto everything, ugh...) but it remains a fun and informative read. If anyone has a more contemporary but similarly thorough dinosaur book, please let me know! I know there have been a lot of huge discoveries, especially from China, since this book came out.

C. M. Kosemen's (keep track of how many times that name appears on this list) and @simon-roy 's Dinosauroids: This was a HUGE influence on what I wanted to draw and what kind of stories I wanted to tell when I first found it and middle school and it still totally holds up. Check it out here!

Walking With Dinosaurs: Huge, multi-part BBC documentary from 1999 that presented stories about Mesozoic fauna as if it was a contemporary nature documentary. The CGI for which it was initially so famous is very dated now but the practical effects are great and it's honestly the narration and presentation that sells it anyway. Also recommend Walking With Monsters which is the same thing but for the Paleozoic. People routinely upload both series on youtube, they're not hard to find.

All Yesterdays by Jon Conway, C. M. Kosemen, and Darren Naish: Unique and outrageous reconstructions of dinosaurs and other paleofauna that challenge our preconceptions and highlight the limits of our understanding of their appearance and behavior. Also really cool for me personally because in my lifetime I've seen this book go from a neat project by people I followed on deviantart to being (rightly) considered a landmark in paleoillustration.

Dino Run: This game bangs and I pity the kids who weren't around in 2008 when this took over the internet for a brief but wonderful period

The Rite of Spring segment from Fantasia: From the big bang to the climactic end of the Mesozoic, all set to Stravinsky. Apparently the only Disney media I enjoy is stuff that The Mouse just does not give a shit about because this one's also on youtube.

That's some stuff off the top of my head, should be enough for now. I may add more if I think of it. Some parting thoughts:

C. M. Kosemen's youtube channel is great for learning about what I'll call "esoteric paleontology" for lack of a better term. Also he just does lots of weird, eclectic videos that I find interesting.

I don't hesitate to recommend Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal because he's literally never disappointed me and everyone I know says it's great, but I personally have not yet gotten around to watching it.

I don't promote pseudoscience, but I do think David Peters is a funny guy with weird, neat ideas. TLDR this one guy has a bunch of fringe theories about pterosaur biology and believes that because literally no one else agrees with him that he must be being censored by "mainstream science." Don't believe any of it, just enjoy the weirdness.

Any time you can pick up a dinosaur or other paleofauna book secondhand, I recommend you do it. Tons of outdated and cheap books that nonetheless contain great illustrations. That kinda stuff is a constant source of inspiration for me.

The Land Before Time is probably still great. It's been over a decade since I last watched it, but I have fond memories. Maybe time for a rewatch...

Take A Break Pt. 2/2

A/N: This part of the concept thing leaves off of the last part so if you haven't read the last one the beginning of this one may be a little confusing at the beginning :p -Puppy

Prompt: You and your caregiver take the day to spend together [heart] In this part you really start to get in touch with your little roots!

 C/W: parental type names (daddy/dada/mama/mommy/baba ect.)I'm going to try and switch up the names for the sake of being a little more inclusive! 

You start to finish up your apple snack, savoring the cute shapes and a little sad that you won't be able to take them in much anymore. Your caregiver apparently notices this and ruffles your hair. "Don't worry sweetheart, I can cut up some more fruit for you another time if you'd like." They give you a warm smile and you can't help but light up at them. You just love your caregiver so much you can't help it! "Hehe thankie papa!" You smile wide at your caregiver and they grab the last apple slice. 

 "Open wide, little one!" they say with a loving voice. You squirm happily and allow them to feed you the snack, your chest pings as you feel yourself regress even further. "There's my good boy/girl/baby. Now, let me go and wash this plate while you go get your stuffies hm? I bet they're dying to get some playtime with you sweetheart!" You nod happily in agreement and run off to get your favorite stuffies. It doesn't matter how many or if you make a mess. Right now is your time and messes can always be cleaned up later. As you run back to the room your caregiver calls out to you. 

“So, little one, what are we doing with your little friends today?” they say as you set up your plushies one after the other. As you make your plushies sit up in a circle you think of a scene for you both to act out with them. It is a very important job after all. How can you play with your caregiver if there’s no story? Finally you settle on a oldie but a goodie.

 "Oh babyyyyy! Hurry back soon I'm gonna put your cartoons on!" right when they finish calling for you, you're already at the entrance of the living room ready with all of your little friends. "M ready mama! Can we watch [insert cartoon that you like here]?" Your caregiver chuckles and pretends to think for a moment. "I dunno cutie, someone didn't use their manners when they asked. Can you?” You giggle in response, the teasing already giving you butterflies. “Babaaaaa!! Pleeeeease can we watch it?” You bury your face into the stuffies in your arms, the teasing overwhelming yet perfect. “Good job sweetheart! Using their manners so nicely for me!” They quickly switch the channel to the show of your choosing and sit on the floor with you. 

“We gonna play house! N dis one,” you point to your favorite stuffie in the circle, “is the mommy! N dis one is the daddy! N dis one n dis one n dis one are da babies N-” as you ramble and assign roles to your stuffies your caregiver sits and listens. Your caregiver always loved it when you spoke. Hearing you ramble about just anything makes your caregivers heart swell up with joy. Nothing makes them happier than seeing you so deep in your regression and so comfortable to be yourself. Just as you finish assigning roles you give your caregiver their respective stuffie. “Here you take dis one! You’re gonna play this one n m gonna play dis one okie?”. Your caregiver smiles and nods in response, getting into character as they play with you.

Playing with your caregiver is something you’ve always enjoyed. Even though you were shy about it at first it was still fun to do! Sure it took some time but a the end of the day, there’s no one else you’d rather have as your playmate than your caregiver. And they felt so, so honored that you’d choose them as a playmate. Getting to play with you and fulfil your playfulness is one of the things they loved most about being your caregiver. Seeing you become so carefree and happy is what made all of the work worth it. As you both play out the scene, your caregiver makes sure to be interactive with you. Leaving not a second of silence or awkward pauses for you. They understand that in order for you two to play without any trouble is for them to reciprocate your playfulness! Playing is never boring or embarrassing with your caregiver around. Your caregiver melts from your cuteness as you play. Your favorite thing about playing with your stuffies is when your caregiver makes silly and cute voices for your little friends! You love the personalities that they do it makes everything much more fun! Soon enough you start to get tired of playing with your fluffy friends and little yawns start to escape from you. Today has taken more energy out of you more than you thought.

“Hey baby boy/girl, is someone getting tired?” Your caregiver says as you start to slow down with your playing. Your cheeks start to heat up at the mention and you start to pout a little.

“Nu-uh! M not sleepy!” you exclaim at your caregiver, though your droopy eyes and slow movements say completely otherwise. Your caregiver puts their stuffie down gently and moves to face you. “Sweetheart you’ve done a lot of stuff today, it’s okay if you need a little bit of naptime to recharge. Your toys will always be around, cutie. We can always keep playing when you wake up.” You start to fuss at the mention of naptime. You don’t wanna nap yet! You just started playing didn’t you? Or at least it felt like it. You try and fight back with your caregiver but you can’t help another yawn as you rub your eyes. Okay maybe a nap doesn’t sound too bad right now. Pouting as you speak you finally stop playing and move to your caregiver’s arms. “You promise we keep playing after naptime, mommy?” Your caregiver smiles and nods, rubbing your back gently as they lift you up. “Of course, prince/princess/princex. We can do absolutely whatever you’d like after you’ve taken your nap. Now, do you want baba’s help with some pj’s? Or can you do it all by yourself?” You take a minute to think about it before clinging onto your caregiver. They chuckle and pat your back softly. “Haha okay, I’ll help you little one.”

They carry you and set you down on your bed and turning to grab a onesie for you. “Alrighty honey, which onesie would you prefer for me to give you?” They hold up a few different color options, all being footed onesies to keep you nice and cozy while you sleep. You point to the one that is your favorite color and make an affirmative sound to tell them that’s your choice today. They put the rest of the onesies back and lay the one you’ve picked out on the bed next to you. “Excellent choice my little one, you’ll look so great in this one!” With a kiss on your forehead they help you into your onesie, tickling your tummy quickly before zipping up your onesie.

“Does my baby want something to drink before they take their nap? A bottle or a sippy with some milk maybe?” Immediately you perk up and nod. Drinking from a bottle/sippy always makes you feel perfectly small! “Mhmm mhmm yes pleas, baba!”

“You got it cutie, you sit here with [insert favorite stuffie’s name here] while I go get that for you little one.” They hand you your favorite stuffie and you cuddle them close. The feeling of their fabric on your face so nice and comforting to you. Before your caregiver leaves the room they kiss your head and ruffle your hair, uttering a small “cutie” as they leave. While they’re gone you settle into your bed, bringing some more of your friends in with you. You yawn and sigh after, even though you want to do work like you had planned earlier you have to admit one thing. It’s nice to regress again after not doing so for so long. Seeing your caregiver be so attentive and so happy to look after you brings you so many butterflies. ‘Why did I ever stop regressing in the first place?’, you think to yourself. As you make yourself comfy your caregiver is back in the room.

“Awe sweetheart don’t fall asleep yet! I’ve got your drink right here!” They hand you your bottle/sippy and you gladly take it. You give them a sleepy smile and take some sips. Your caregiver then gives you a kiss on your cheek before turning to leave, but you won’t let them leave that easily. How could you possibly go to sleep without some cuddles from your caregiver? Whining at them with a pout you make some grabby hands at them and they turn around. “Oh how silly of me! How could I have possibly forgotten my baby’s bedtime cuddles? Scoot over, my sleepy baby! Mommy’s coming for ya!” And true to their word, they climb into bed with you and snuggle you close. They softly pat your back as you sip on your bottle/sippy, already drifting to sleep.  The sound of your soft snores and cooing fills the room. And of course, your caregiver has you safe and comfortable in their arms. Naptime is always safe with them around.

“Good night my sweet thing. I’ll be here when you wake up and we’ll play whatever your little self wants. I love you so much baby. Sweet dreams. ♡”

The ABCs of Attending Charmed! - A through M

Will Charmed!2024 be your first kink event? Or your first event full stop? Here is a short primer to guide you through the experience.

A - Attendance

How will you attend Charmed!2024? In-person? Online? In-person and online? All three of these are options! Charmed!2024 is a hybrid convention, which means that we plan to stream most of our classes. Some of those classes will be recorded and re-broadcast over the weekend, so that people who missed them the first time around have a second chance. All streamed content is available to every convention attendee – in-person attendees are welcome to watch streamed content via their own computers from the comfort of their hotel rooms.

B - Before the Convention

Register for whichever attendance option works for you!

If attending in-person:

Reserve your hotel room!

If you haven’t done so already, join our Discord server!

Arrange your travel!

Make sure your Covid vaccinations are up to date and that you have a test to take in the three days leading up to your arrival!

Make sure that you have enough well-fitting masks (like N95s or KN94s) for the entire weekend!

If you’re attending virtually:

When it’s available, verify your identity on the event server!

If haven’t got it already, sign up for Zoom!

C - Consent 

At Charmed!2024 (both in-person and online) consent needs to be:

informed, affirmative, and revocable. Any scene, play, or hypnotic interaction between two or more attendees needs to be negotiated with those benchmarks in mind.

Consent standards need to be generally observed as well. For example, attendees need to have consent before they:

Touch another person, even in non-sexual ways

Touch or handle another person’s property, be it human property or toys/equipment/clothing

Insert themselves into or interrupt a scene in progress

Involve another person in their scene or non-scene activity

D - Discord

Although information about Charmed!2024 is being released through multiple sources, being a member of our Discord server is a vital step in being fully informed for the convention. In the months leading up to Charmed!, Discord is the best way to get to know your fellow attendees! It’s where you’ll find things like a general chat full of people with experience attending conventions, and closer to the event, room-share and ride-share channels . For the convention itself, we’ll have a special event server that attendees will be invited to join sometime in December. All communications, updates, and class links will be made only in the event server! You can join our regular server HERE

E - Etiquette

Navigating a new space, whether it be online or in-person, can be daunting, especially when there might be rules that you don’t know about. If you’ve never attended a kinky convention before (and Charmed!2024 qualifies!) here are some things to keep in mind.

Everyone will be using a scene name. Very few people attend a kink con using their “real world” name. This is usually for safety and security reasons; reactions from non-kink people to anything kink-related can range from “that’s weird” to “burn it with fire” and it’s not an exaggeration to say that there are people who have been outed as kinky who have had their lives ruined– losing their jobs, relationships, and children in the process.  

Observation and use of diverse pronouns is our standard. You’ll have the opportunity to put your pronouns on your badge (or in your ID on Discord) and we expect you to use the correct pronouns for every person you encounter. You may encounter a pronoun you’ve never seen before, if this happens, do your best to remember it and correct yourself immediately if you accidentally use the wrong one.

Any and all hypnosis must happen with prior negotiation and consent. This means that trying out your killer handshake induction on a random, unsuspecting stranger is expressly against the rules. It also means that our convention is off-limits to non-attendees! Our door dragons (volunteers who guard each entrance to the official convention space) will be checking the badges of every single person who passes them, and if you don’t have your badge you don’t get to go in. Trying to involve other hotel guests (or staff!) in your hypno-hijinks is also against the rules.

F - Food

Our hotel has its own restaurant that offers room service, but your food options are far broader than that! Most of the guest rooms have mini-fridges, and it’s not unusual for attendees to get a weekend’s worth of groceries and forgo restaurants entirely.

Another popular choice is to order meals using a delivery service app. There are many restaurant options near our hotel, which give attendees many options for take-out, dine-in, and to try to have a sit-down meal with a large group in under an hour because you’re strapped for time…

… yes, that last thing is something that people try to do, and my official advice is that you never get done in under an hour. Like, ever.

G - Gaming

As in board games, card games, role-playing games, etc. There will almost certainly be a place for gaming, which may or may not be in our con suite (a social-gathering space provided by the con for basic chilling and hanging out.) In past years, we’ve had gaming as an evening event, and I’d be shocked if that wasn’t the case again in 2024.

H - Hotel

I am not going to tell you where our hotel is at this time. (If you read that in Peter Falk’s voice, then you know where my head goes anytime I use the phrase “at this time”.)

For security reasons we do not share the name or exact location of our hotel with non-attendees. This means you’ll find out what it is after you’ve registered! Here’s what I can tell you: Location: Annapolis, Maryland. The hotel is within walking distance or very short driving distance of local shops and restaurants. Cost: $104.00 per night + tax $117.52 per night with tax. Payment is due when you physically check in, in person, at the hotel. Upgrades: Upgrades may be available but are not guaranteed. If any possible upgrades are available you will be prompted by the hotel site to apply after you've registered. You will not know if you are receiving an upgrade until you physically check in, in person, at the hotel. Possible Upgrades: Early Check-in: $25 (one time charge) King Corner Room: $42 (nightly up charge) Junior Suite with King Bed: $77 (nightly up charge) How to reserve a room: After you've registered for the convention, you will receive a confirmation email. At the very bottom of that email you will find a direct link to our discounted hotel rooms. Please, unless you have a very compelling reason not to, use that link to reserve your room! Filling a pre-specified number of rooms is part of our contract with the hotel. You must be 21 to reserve a room! Please note that discounted rooms are available from Wed January 10 through Tues January 16. You will need to edit the days of your stay when you are reserving a room through our form. J - January

Charmed!2024 will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend: Thursday, January 11th through Sunday, January 14th. Monday the 15th is MLK Day and many people have the day off, so you can expect to see attendees staying after the con officially ends on Sunday and traveling home on Monday. If you’re trying to decide when to leave, staying Sunday night for a final evening with friends is often the highlight of the con for people.

Annapolis weather in January is usually briskly cold, with an average high temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit ( 7 degrees Celsius), and definite possibilities of snow. If it snows, it will be inches, not feet, and the only real impact on con attendees will happen when it comes time to travel. If there are major storms during Charmed!2024, attendees traveling by air will definitely want to keep an eye on their flight statuses!

K - Kink

Charmed!2024 is a kinky con. While everyone’s level of kinky engagement with hypnosis is different (for example, some people play almost exclusively in the “recreational-with-no-kink-elements pool, and others do not necessarily equate “erotic” with “kinky”) overall our convention celebrates kinky erotic hypnosis. Our schedule and attendees reflect that! You might have the opportunity to attend classes that were developed in a BDSM background, showing power exchange relationships or the intersection of hypnosis with other disciplines like shibari, dollplay, and forced chastity. (There are also classes that don’t have anything to do with kink or BDSM; we do try to have something for everyone!)

L - Lobby

As a kink con, it’s very important for us and our attendees to maintain a low profile in non-event spaces of the hotel like the lobby. In non convention spaces, we ask that attendees do their best not to invite direct attention. Again, for some people, being outed as kinky in their vanilla life can have devastating consequences. Outside of official conspace, we ask that attendees do things like flip their badges over so they can’t be read easily, keep discussions that graphically describe their hypnosis hijinks private, and cover their kinkier outfits with a coat or robe when traveling to conspace. 

Non-attendees always try to enter conspace at some point or another, that’s why we have door dragons. Our goal is to keep these interactions to the barest minimum.

M - Masking

For health reasons, Charmed!2024 will continue to be a masked conference. This means that everyone inside con space will be required to wear a well-fitting mask like an N95 or KN94. We will also be requiring that attendees be masked in our badge pick up area, which is in a public part of the hotel. Presenters may remove their masks when they are presenting a class. We acknowledge that many events and locations around the world have acceded to the public opinion that masking is no longer necessary, but we have a high number of immunocompromised people that attend our event and we refuse to endanger them by ignoring the reality that Covid is still a threat.

Attendees will also need to be fully vaccinated for Covid, and will need to provide proof of a negative Covid test result to registration staff when picking up their badge. 

Attendees are welcome to make their own decisions about whether or not to mask outside of conspace.

C O N S U M E. Don't let anything stop your ravenous media consumption. Who needs to eat, anyway? You live and breathe this Thing, the dopamine and serotonin are pumping, it's all you can think about until it's finished, whether that's hours or days or weeks.

Enter the Fandom. This is where you start exploring the avenues of fandom content: fics, gifs, art, it all goes. You follow blogs, start talking with fellow fans, and discover the history of this Thing. You learn ALL the shipping drama and latch onto your faves. Your icon changes, maybe even your username. Nothing is safe in the wake of your journey.

BTS CRAZE. Oh, the Thing itself wasn't enough?? Now you're diving headlong into the Behind The Scenes of it all. YouTube blooper reels become your best friend, you learn all the actors' names and dates of birth and favorite colors. You can recite all the facts and trivia from memory.

Fanfiction BABEYYY. AO3 becomes your new best friend. You're up into the wee hours of the morning, scrolling like your life depends on it. Your username becomes some fic writer's wake-up email as you leave Kudos on e v e r y t h i n g. Fix it fics, hurt and comfort, you name it.

Creation. Now you're so invested in the fandom that simply consuming isn't enough. You must. CREATE. Ideas are bursting out of your brain faster than you can catch them. Whip out those crusty art skills and composition notebooks from the seventh grade, because it's going down and your followers are in for a ride.

Relive. It's all been consumed, every blog dug through for grainy gifs, every YouTube channel combed for behind the scenes and blooper reels, so now it's time for the next logical step: Re-consume everything. Again. (Rinse and repeat steps 1-6 until every last bit of serotonin has been wrung out of the Thing that can possibly be extracted.)

Level Off. You've watched every video, read every word, seen every gif, joined every Discord channel. It's finally time to rest. It's hard to let go, but you're comforted by the fact that this Thing will resurface before too long, consuming your mind yet again in due time.
