there's something depressing about barry dying hal goes all traumatic shit w/o him, and the fact that it's implied that hal wouldn't turn to parallax if barry's still around makes things sadder

I still cry about it to this day

I feel that every time I'm reminded of this, I spiral with Hal always saying how he has nothing to lose when really in moments like these he loses everything, and the reaction to it is insane.

This makes me want to bring up a lot of topics about death, losing someone who is loved personally, and what grief does to someone. How it is portrayed here... How Hal handles death throughout his whole life, depending on who passes is a whole different story. And that he could be an extremely sacrificial person who would do anything for the people he loved even if it meant something he was at both his lowest points and one of the most vulnerable points of his life. (This goes for both Barry and Hal. They do anything...ANYTHING...for the people they love.) We even had the time Barry turned into Parallax partially from the parasite, and just gleaming to Hal about the biggest fear is losing someone he loves which is so backhanded to Hal...let me tell you...

(hashtag pulling up cassiegirlwonders saying that Barry is one of Hal's strongest connections to humanity. THAT sticks in my mind.) How much Hal had the idea of saving Barry when he saved Ollie too? What dangerous possibilities would be pulled after Barry's death for Hal should be covered more...

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Honestly, I feel like Birdflash is the answer to quite a few of these, lol. I just absolutely do not care about Dick and Wally being anything more than friends. I find them kind of boring together, tbh, but their friendship can be a lot of fun when Tom Taylor isn't writing it. Also, nothing brings me as much joy as writing Wally fucking his best friend's dad.

Most importantly, when they're just friends, Wally is allowed to have a whole entire life outside of Dick in a way that just doesn't happen when people are writing ship fic with them. But like...I don't see what Wally would see in Dick, romance-wise. I just genuinely don't understand it. Wally and Dick don't have that vibe to me in the comics at all. I think Wally and Dick would genuinely murder each other if they ever dated. They would reach that point of just complete and total frustration.

This is why Wally/Roy is superior--

Close runner up: Hal/Barry (sorry lol). I don't have anything against this ship, and I do make it background flavor in some of my fics, but idk. I just love their friendship. I think they are 100% bros, they have definitely slept together at least once, but Barry is too repressed to ever make a real go of it, imo. Hal might be in love with Barry, though, but Barry is too into Iris to return his affections. I will accept a Barry/Iris/Hal threesome, though.

- Constantine calling Batman "love" anytime.

"Good plan, love. Now, if I may add..."

- Diana constantly fighting the urge to add multiple times in the footnotes of her research papers : "*I know that because I was there."

- Clark feeling some type of way whenever anyone from the Batfam calls him Uncle Clark (he does tear up a little the first few times).

- Anytime, Booster would get cancelled for a tweet, he'd go back in time just far enough to prevent from tweeting it. He did that way too many times.

- Barry and Hal being that one best friend duo that are big on PDA. Most of the time during JL meetings, Hal's leg would be intertwined with Barry's.

- Given that the way they usually interact correlates with what he learned about married couples, J'onn assumed for the longest time that Bruce and Clark were spouses.

- Much like how Clark switches off his kansan accent when he's being Superman, Bruce switches off his "posh" accent when he's being Batman.

- On the contrary, Oliver always sounds filthy rich.

- Everytime someone mentions (any) Robin, Hal's mind still can't fathom that Batman's sidekick is a literal child.

- Dick is a bisexual flirt in and out of costume.

- Regular occurence : Batman enters the meeting room, sees Booster's stupid expression that's a clear sign he's going to share very stupid ideas, and Batman exits the room without a word. He doesn't come back for the rest of the meeting. After it happened more than once, some of the members get the clue and walk out as well.

- Superman can recite entire movies by heart. Not surprising in and of itself, but surprising that Bruce silently lets him do it over his shoulder when he's working in the batcave. Lets Clark unwind and gives Bruce background noise.

- After multiple complaints, Batman had to soundproof Dinah and Oliver's room in the watchtower.

The generational progression of team dynamics is truly so funny to me.

You have the Justice League and they're all coworkers. They're friendly and polite with each other but they don't really hang out together outside of work. Two of them might transcend the work friend dynamic and buddy up outside of work (i.e Barry and Hal or Ollie and Hal or Bruce and Clark) but you will never see all of them casually hanging out for fun.

Then there's the Titans. These guys are friends. They all have busy lives so they maybe don't see each other as much as they'd like to but they're all deeply bonded with each other. They make a point of planning big get togethers with each other unrelated to work. They know each other's deepest secrets. Their kids consider the other Titans aunts and uncles.

Last but not least there's Young Justice. Young Justice is the definition of unhealthy codependency. They're all best friends and they act like siblings but they might also all be in love with each other? Kon dated Cassie, hit on Cissie, flirted with Bart's clone and had a dream where Bart was in a cheerleading outfit and was with his other love interests and then just everything with Tim. Cassie dated both Tim and Kon, and then there's everything with Cissie. Bart admitted that Cassie made him 'like girls' (?), took Cissie to a dance, and is extremely close with Tim and Kon to the point where it could just be unhealthy codependency but it might be something more. Honestly this entire group is so intermixed and codependent it's insane. They go from 'i love you so much you are my best friend' to 'i wanna make out with you' so fast and with barely any breathing room. They are constantly with each other and hang out at least once a week. They cannot exist separately.

Injustice What-If:

The Superman brought to the Injustice universe to battle his evil counterpart returns to his home universe. He’s grateful to see all of his friends, reflecting back on how horrible that other world was.

He gives his Lois a giant hug and caresses her stomach where their child is, swearing that he will never become like the other him. He mourns that he’ll never be able to see Green Arrow again, but is happy for him nonetheless.

He smiles at his world’s Diana and Bruce, his best friends, his confidants who will set him straight if he goes overboard. He’s grateful for Barry and Hal, and Victor and Arthur. For a moment, he flashes back to Hal in that yellow suit and Victor with that glowing red eye of his, more machine than man.

Clark is happy.

Then he sees Shazam. He sees Billy, coming from school, with both homework and Champion work to do. He’s confident and excitable and isn’t able to hide the beaming smile when he sees Clark. He begins ranting about his stupid teachers and how long and boring school is. How he couldn’t wait to get out of there and go fight some demons or robots or wizards.

Clark’s smile drops. The rest of the League notices and immediately asks what’s wrong. Is he tired? Is he overwhelmed? How can they help?

He can’t look at him. Clark can’t look Billy in the eyes without knowing what happened to his other self. What he caused. Who he killed. His stomach drops and he feels tears begin to well up in his eyes before he quickly blinks them away. Billly doesn’t need tears right now. He doesn’t need to deal with the problems of adults like he had to in that other universe. Like hell would Clark allow that to happen.

Billy leaves soon after, claiming he has to finish his work quickly if he wants to get to patrol faster. Clark nods slowly as he leaves before turning to look at his confused cohorts.

Diana asks what happened. Why he reacted like that to Billy in particular. Barry agrees and asks if the little guy got hurt or something. Dr. Fate is the only silent observer.

Clark looks them all in the eye, and tells them everything. About how horrible the other world is. How horrible his other self was. The constant death and despair.

And then, he tells them what he found out before he left. Why that world’s Shazam wasn’t there.

The other Clark killed him.

Billy was the only one who spoke out against the other Superman’s war-crazy plans of conquering other planets. Other universes. It was a no brained that the Champion would be the most against the tyranny. And yet, no one helped. No one said a thing.

No one moved in to protect the boy when Injustice-Superman’s breath froze Shazam’s mouth, preventing him from speaking the word that might’ve saved him. No one spoke when hot laser eyes burned into Shazam’s. No one helped move the body when it fell to the ground.

The League is horrified! Angered and disgusted and every other ugly feeling. Diana is distraught that she just watched the boy she, and everyone else, thought of as a little brother be killed before her very eyes, and by one of her closest friends! Hal wants to kill his other self for preventing the other Barry from helping, and Barry just wants to throttle the other Superman. Victor doesn’t move a muscle, but more could be said in how he glared at the metal encasing his body. He swore that he would never let the machine take full control. Now he knew why.

Bruce wants to go back. See the other Billy’s grave. He wants to find their Billy and give him the biggest hug, shove food into his arms and a blanket over his shoulders.

Of course, Billy knows already. He felt it in the Rock, heard the whisper of his death in another world by a distraught Wizard. He actually isn’t all that surprised. Of course a world like that would do something horrible to him, why not?

But that doesn’t stop his surprise when League members hang around him more often than they already do. They don’t get clingy, per we, but they do lose their shit when he isn’t in the room. They sneak a little money into his pocket when he says no, and they, on more than one occasion, wrestle each other for some aloe time with Billy.

He’s just glad they haven’t asked him if he knows he’s dead in another universe.

He’s going to the funeral soon. And he’ll be one of the only people there.
