Jonathan is a passive character, he doesn't particularly seek anything out, he's left almost entirely reacting to things that happen to him

Mina is an active character, she actively seeks out information, talking to the locals in Whitby, finding the story of the Demeter. She also does other stuff I can't delve into without giving spoilers.

This is a very distinct contrast as it feeds into the themes of gender non-conformation. Mina is filling the role of the male protagonist, while Jonathan is filling the role of a female damsel in distress.
