So, I made a doodle.
And I wanted to write a fic with it.
Here's the doodle
Please excuse my awful artwork I tried
Modern au dolores (11) going back to school
And here's the story to go with it
Dancer issues
"Lola, Have you got your dance bag?" pepa called from the van that Dolores and Isabela had just gotten out of.
"Si mama i got it, see you after dance!" dolores called as she entered the middle school for the first time.
"can you believe it Lola! we're in 6th grade, we're allowed our own house key now," isabela raved, this was the only time she was away from alma, and though she and dolores both kept up the reputation of the Madrigals being the kindest, and mostly best behaved children in the school, isabela could truly be who she was at school, which is a (for now) bisexual girl who can control flowers, and likes to wear edgy and colorful clothing.
After the end of their last year at their elementary school, they had the puberty talk just as you'd expect. Both the girls and boys were split up and shown a video that explained puberty in an age appropriate way.
Dolores was intrigued by the video, Isabela was embarassed by it.
But now that the pair was in middle school, they were reunited with their friends. and their extracurriculars were starting again.
For Isabela this meant, the annual school musical, volleyball in the winter, and softball in the spring. For Dolores, this was time for stage crew, choir, and dance. Dolores was also the junior dance coach for the musical.
When they got to the cafateria, they got their schedules and compared them. "Isa, we have all the same classes, except for these two, but those are our electives," Dolores told her cousin.
Once the bell had rang for class, the pair walked off to Mr Mendez's class for English.
After what felt like forever, the first day of school finally ended. And Dolores took the short walk with Isa down to the gym for her volleyball pre tryout boot camp, she barely caught the bus for her dance academy across town.
"Heey Lola, what dance classes are you taking?" Her best friend Sophia asked.
"I'm going into advanced contemporary, hip hop, jazz, and acro. Mi mama also signed me up for some solo lessons for competitions in December and January ." Dolores told
"Sweet, mi mami signed me up for advanced contemporary and hip-hop, are you just taking the class or are you gonna compete in the group dances?" Sophia asked
"I'm competing, duh," Dolores said,
"Good, it would be awful if the hip hop team lost their lead." Sophia said patting Dolores’s shoulder.
"Come on soph we gotta get changed, I have hip-hop first, you?" Dolores told as she grabbed her dance bag heading to the locker room in the studio.
"I have the same class as you, we've been competing together in hip-hop since we were three," soph said joking punching Dolores’s shoulder.
"Oh yeah, anyway, did you get any new dance wear over summer?" Dolores asked pulling on her old yellow dance top and matching shorts. It isn't like she didn't have new dance wear, she just wanted to get one last day of wear out of these before they got too small since they'd been her good luck charm since she was 9.
"Yeah, you? You've been wearing the same yellow getup for three years," Sophia teased
"Yeah I got some new sets but this is what I wore when I got my first hip hop lead, and every lead since then" Dolores defended as she slicked her short hair back into a low pony adjusting her headband/earmuffs accordingly.
After taking her hip-hop jazz and contemporary class, she had her acro, and then a two hour solo lesson to meet her new coach and do some skill assessments before they decide her solo competition piece and start working on choreography.
Her acro class was super fun, since it was the first day they had everyone do a easy combination, backhandspring followed by a press handstand, and a middle oversplit leap.
(I'm not an acro dancer, or a pro dancer at all I just kinda making up as I go right here)
Once she got to her solo lesson, she felt a bit weird, not bad weird just, a little more moist than she thought she should feel.
An hour in they were doing a skill assessment with her tumbling skills.
"Ok can you try to do an acro combination for me? I want you to do a dive cartwheel into a back handspring, then a side aerial back walkover. I want a step between the back handspring and side aerial." Her new coach Ms, Lily asked.
Ms lily was about 25, with short red hair, and pale skin. She was a kind soul and loved each of her students dearly. Because dolores loves being able to have a connection with her coaches and Ms lily likes the same, they'll likely get along well
Dolores went to the tumble track, and did as her coach asked. When she landed her coach wrote something down on her clipboard, before approaching dolores.
"Dolores, have you had your period before?" Ms lily asked.
"No miss," dolores answered
Ms lily hesitated before continuing.
"You just got your first period sweetie, it's on your shorts."
Dolores’s face almost turned white when she was told that.
Then her cheeks turned red and the silent panic began to set in.
"I have some pads with me, do you have extra shorts?" Ms lily told,
"Yeah, I'm sorry about this, I didn't think it happen any time soon," dolores said playing with the bracelet on her wrist.
"It's nothing to be sorry about honey, happens to the best of us. I remember my first one," Ms lily said as she dug in her dance bag.
"Here you go, do you know what to do?" Again dolores nodded and ran off to get changed.
Once she came back with the pad on and her black shorts, miss lily asked.
"Do you wanna continue with the lesson or do you want to take a small break and talk a little?"
"Can we talk for a minute, I still can't believe this just happened." Dolores said
"Of course, do you wanna hear my first period story, it was quite a mess," Ms lily asked
"It couldn't be that bad, could it?" Dolores asked.
"Oh it can, I was taking jazz with 7 boys. And other than the instructor I was the only girl. Not to mention but I was wearing neon green shorts. The guy behind me Jake I think his name was, he was my biggest rival in class, he pointed it out the blood, and I was absoloutely mortified, my solo coach for the season saw me run into the bathroom, and came to check on me. And yeah, I went back to class in my back up shorts and everyone teased me for about a month. Then it just stopped and that was that," Ms lily told.
"Wow, did you ever not dance because of your period?" Dolores asked
"Nope, one time I got my period at a competition in Bogota, my cramps were so bad that time, but they didn't stop me," Ms lily told,
"I'm not going to let it stop me either," dolores determined,
After the lesson when she finally was able to climb I to the back of her papa's jeep, that somehow her mama was driving, she told pepa what happened.
"Oh goodness mija, let's get you some pads and chocolate and head home," pepa said shifting into second gear after she merged onto the highway that cut through the encanto.

Yamilet’s Birthday
My birthday fic for Yamilet Gonzalez! Also Yamibel. Remember that September 17th is Yamilet’s birthday! Enjoy!
“Luisa?” Isabela asked. “What’s up with Mirabel?”
Luisa shrugged. “Not sure. She refuses to tell me for some reason.”
“Because I wanted to spend time with her but she’s been locked in her room all day doing God knows what. What could she possibly be doing that’s taking up so much of her time?”
“I heard she’s knitting something.” Dolores walked in just then, leaving the kitchen with a circular tray of freshly-cut lemons.
“That’s nice,” Isabela said, turning towards her prima-hermana. “Knitting what?”
“No idea,” Dolores replied. “Hmm!” She shrugged cutely and walked away to Antonio’s room where they could eat the lemons together.
Isabela grumbled.
“Well, whatever it is, she’d better finish it up now,” she said, plomping herself down at the table.
It was then when Camilo came in, yawning as he sat down at the table. “Good morning girls,” he slurred as he virtually fell into the chair, almost ready to collapse into the table.
“It’s not even morning, Camilo,” Isabela pointed out. “It’s three in the afternoon.”
Camilo lifted his curly head, his glazed over eyes staring right through her. “Huh…oh…that early, huh…”
“Why are you so tired, Camilo?”
“I…was studying hard…”
“He snuck out to see Emiliana,” Luisa straight-up tattled.
Camilo didn’t even have enough energy to rage at Luisa. He fell asleep right then and there.
“I don’t even wanna know,” Isabela ignored. “What I do wanna know is why Mirabel is retreating from us into her room now.”
“Huh?” Camilo’s dizzy head raised up once more. “Don’t you know? It’s Yamilet’s birthday soon.” Then he snored.
And a lightbulb went off in Isabela’s head.
Yamilet. Of course.
Mirabel’s girlfriend.
Well then, in that case, Isabela would have to get her something too!
Mirabel continued sewing together the gift she was making for Yamilet. This was going to be a wonderful and amazing gift, and her girlfriend was going to love it!
A knock on the door could be heard. Pepa entered without even waiting for Mirabel to respond.
“Mi sobrina?” Pepa asked tenderly. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” Mirabel said, too zoned in on her sewing.
“What are you making?” She asked.
“Oh, this? Well, it’s for my girlfriend, Yamilet, it’s a surprise.”
“I respect that!” Pepa gave a thumbs up. “Well, goodnight, sweetheart.”
“Good night, Tía,” Mirabel said without looking up. Pepa smiled and closed the door.
“You’re not sneaking out to see your girlfriend again, are you, Camilo?” Isabela asked as she helped a dizzy Camilo up the stairs.
“No,” Camilo murmured and yawned.
“Good, you better not be.” Isabela opened the door for him. “Have a nice sleep, chiquito.” She bent down and kissed him on the cheek.
“Goodnight Isabela,” Camilo said, kissing her on the cheek too. He wobbled over to his bed and threw himself down on it, closing his eyes instantly.
Isabela went to her room. She could not be happier that Mirabel had a girlfriend. She liked Yamilet a lot! Especially since she and her sister reminded Isabela of herself and her own girlfriend, Monika. She hoped that she could get Yamilet a birthday gift that she really liked.
💜
Mirabel happily skipped down the stairs and out of Casita, on her way to Yamilet’s house. “Morning Abuelo!” She greeted the painting of Alma’s deceased husband on the wall before exiting.
“Mirabel seems awfully happy today,” Julieta said.
“Agreed. When is she not chipper?” Pepa shrugged. “But I still wonder what got her in such a joyous mood.”
“It’s her girlfriend’s birthday,” Isabela explained.
Pepa’s eyes widened. “Today? Already? That’s awesome! Happy birthday to Yamilet!”
Dolores giggled. “I’ll make sure to tell her you said that, Mami,” she said, giving her mother a hug. Pepa hugged back.
Camilo raced out the door, shocking everyone in his path. “Mirabel! Wait up for mi!”
Mirabel was already well on her way to Yamilet’s house by the time Camilo made his way to her. Panting and running, he finally caught up as he almost tripped over his two clumsy feet.
“Hey, why didn’t you—“ he coughed profusely and Mirabel took a step back. “—wait? I have a present too!”
“She’s not your girlfriend, Camilo. Did you forget that?”
“Yeah, but I’m still her friend. And I would like to wish her a happy birthday, if you don’t mind not being so clingy and jealous.”
“Clingy and jealous?” Mirabel exclaimed. “You hated that guy you claimed was flirting with Emiliana last week! When he was just asking for help tending to the sheep!”
“Yeah but I kept it to myself,” Camilo explained. “I didn’t take it out on anyone like you’re doing to me right now.”
“Of course, because you know Emiliana’s not to be messed with.”
“Yeah. Anyway, I’m coming and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“Whatever.” Mirabel huffed.
They got up to Yamilet’s house. “I can’t wait for our date,” Mirabel sighed wistfully to herself.
Camilo grunted. Mirabel seemed to be forgetting to do something. He knocked on the door since she clearly wouldn’t.
The door opened, and Yamilet answered with a smile.
Camilo waved. “Hey Yamil—“
“BABY!” Mirabel leaped at Yamilet and wrapped her in a hug, kissing her affectionately on the lips. Camilo sighed and rolled his eyes. Seriously? Now was not the time!
“H-how are you doing Mirabel?” Yamilet said. Although she was still working on it thanks to therapy, her stutter was slowly lessening, and Mirabel was pleased to see it.
“Better now that I’m with you, cariña,” Mirabel said with a smile. She linked arms with Yamilet and walked inside. “How’s my lovely beautiful birthday girl?”
“I’m good, and I’m so excited!” Yamilet asked. “Oh, and I-I hope you haven’t f-forgotten about the-the date we have today.”
“Oh, of course I haven’t mi belleza,” Mirabel cooed. “Trust me, once you see what I’ve had planned for you, you’ll be blown away! I’d never miss a chance to spoil my girlfriend!”
“Aww, you’re just the sweetest, aren’t you?” Yamilet giggled and teased. “This is why I l-love—“
“ARRRGH! OH MY GOSH CAN YOU STOP BEING SO LOVEY-DOVEY ALREADY?!” Camilo interrupted the happy couple. “Gosh, it’s making me sick. Save that shit for the actual date, please!” He made the begging motion with his hands.
Mirabel and Yamilet turned to look at Camilo with shocked “don’t you dare” eyes.
“Cami, are you t-talking to us?” Yamilet quizzed him.
“I think someone’s a tiny bit antsy,” Mirabel said, knowing the real reason Camilo didn’t get any sleep.
Camilo rubbed the back of his head with his hands. “I didn’t mean to…look, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Yamilet forgave. “Anyway, what gift do you have for me?”
Camilo took out the small gift paper-wrapped present and handed it to Yamilet. “Open it,” he said calmly with a smile.
Yamilet opened the gift. Inside was a little snow globe.
“And when you shake it,” he said, “look what happens!”
Yamilet shook the snow globe, and sure enough, “snow” started to fall inside it, making it look wonderful and magical.
“Wow!” Yamilet let go of Mirabel to wrap Camilo in a hug. “Thank you!”
“No problem!” Camilo said with a smile.
Yamilet turned to Mirabel. “Where’s your gift?”
“I’ll bring it to our date,” Mirabel replied with a smile.
Yamilet was happy to hear that! “This is why you’re the best girlfriend!”
“Nuh-uh,” Camilo said. “None of it.”
But Yamilet wasn’t listening as she embraced Mirabel affectionately and they two girls nuzzled noses.
“Ugh.” Camilo rolled his head to the sky.
After a while, the three of them left, Camilo going back to Casita, Mirabel and Yamilet going on their date.
“You’re gonna love it, trust me!” Mirabel said.
“Really, will I?” Yamilet said, smirking mischievously with half-lidded eyes.
“Of course you will!” Mirabel chirped. “You’ll be amazed, just like you saw a shooting star!”
“I can’t w-wait, then!” Yamilet said.
That’s when they ran into Isabela.
“Oh, Yamilet!” Isabela exclaimed. “Fancy seeing you here!” She took something out of her mochila and handed it to her. “Happy birthday! Any girlfriend of my sister’s is a friend of mine, so I wanted to give you a present. Enjoy!”
Yamilet took the carefully-wrapped gift and smiled. “Wow, thanks Isabela!”
“You’re welcome!” Isabela hugged Yamilet and sprinted away.
“Well that was awkward,” Mirabel said, watching her sister, who hadn’t even said a word to her, run off. “And unexpected.”
“Yup…in a good way, right?”
“Oh yeah, totally totally totally…come on, we have a date to enjoy!”
“Oh r-right!” Yamilet took Mirabel’s arm once more and they hurried off.
💜
“This is our date?” Yamilet said. “In the…woods?”
Mirabel smiled, putting a finger to her lips and shushing. “Yes, but we’re not there yet.”
She led her girlfriend to a secretive area surrounded by leaves and bushes. And when they pushed past it, Yamilet was surprised. There was an entire dinner with chairs set up, with two little candles in the center of the table. And there were flowers decorating the chairs and trees!
Yamilet pressed a hand to her heart, the tips of her lips reaching her ears as she gasped with glee! “You did all this for me?”
“I had help,” Mirabel said with a smile. “But yes.”
“Wow, thank you!” Yamilet hugged Mirabel giving her a kiss—again!—which made Mirabel blush.
“Oh, cariña,” Mirabel giggled.
“Awww, that’s so sweet,” Dolores told Camilo back at Casita. “She likes it!”
Camilo nodded. “I knew she would. She also liked my snow globe!”
“Now it’s time for phase two!” Dolores said with a grin.
Mirabel pulled open Yamilet’s seat for her, and both sat down to eat.
“Happy birthday, Yamilet!” Mirabel said with a smile.
Yamilet and Mirabel clinked glasses and drank there…well, obviously it was just fruit punch. Not anything alcoholic. But it was still a lovely and surprisingly sophisticated dinner for two teenagers.
“Why don’t you open the gift Isabela gave you?” Mirabel asked.
To be honest, Yamilet was going to wait until she got home, but she was itching to know what Isabela had gotten her. Not to mention that her girlfriend might be upset if her sister’s present was ignored.
“Oh, okay,” Yamilet complied, and Mirabel squealed.
Yamilet unwrapped the gift.
“It‘s…perfume.” Yamilet looked down at the two tall bottles of perfume.
“Yeah,” Mirabel said. “Don’t you like it?” She looked worried.
“I do!” Yamilet exclaimed. She opened them and sprayed them on her hand to get a whiff. One smelt like lilac, the other smelt like raspberries. Her favorite flower and fruit respectively.
Tears stung at the tips of Yamilet’s eyes. “I love it. Tell I-Isabela that I said thank you.”
Mirabel beamed. “I will.” She didn’t remind Yamilet that she had technically said thank you already.
“I don’t have any place to keep it though,” Yamilet sighed.
“Oh, it’s fine. You can give it to me. I’ll remember to give it back to you.” Mirabel said.
“Okay.” Yamilet gave her perfume to Mirabel, who put it in her mochila.
“Anyway, here’s my gift,” she said, pulling out a box that was under the table.
Yamilet opened it. She gasped. “You sewed this for me!”
“Yup!” Mirabel wiped fake sweat from her brow. “It took me forever.”
Yamilet put it on. “It’s so pretty!” She said, admiring her purple ruana. “Although, I kinda look like Camilo.”
“I hope that’s not an insult,” Mirabel giggled.
“Oh, it’s not, don’t worry,” she laughed ant sat back down. Mirabel smiled at her warmly as she sipped her juice. “Thank you,” Yamilet mouthed.
“You’re welcome, she mouthed back with a wink, and Yamilet blushed.
“So who helped you set all this up?” Yamilet asked, looking around in awe. “Because it truly is breathtaking.”
Mirabel giggled and blushed. “My cousin Dolores. She was really passionate about making sure that everything is perfect. I think that she’s rooting for us because she knows what it’s like to have her love be so out of reach.”
“That’s great!” Yamilet said. “I wish my cousins would help me out with these things. Instead, they simply annoy me and read my diary. One time my pri-primo poured milk down my back.”
“Really?” Mirabel gawked. “That’s hilarious!”
“And my prima placed roaches in my soup. Dead roaches!”
Mirabel cackled. “Make it stop!”
Yamilet found herself laughing as well. “It’s true!” She said, snickering. “My primos get up to a lot of silly stuff. But at the same time, I can’t live without them.”
“You know,” Mirabel said. “When I was younger, my primo Camilo was really obsessed with cats. Like really, REALLY obsessed with cats. He used to lick himself and refuse to bathe until Tía Pepa brought out the chanclata. And he kept pretending to take a ‘catnap’. But the weirdest part was when he came up to me while I was drawing and said he had a ‘present’ for me, which was a dead, bloody mouse.”
Yamilet screamed. “CAMILO did that? OUR CAMILO?!”
“Yes, our Camilo,” Mirabel replied. “But hey, we were seven at the time, so…” she shrugged.
“Did he kill the mouse himself?” Yamilet desperately asked.
“Honestly,” Mirabel threw up both hands and chuckled. “I don’t even wanna know.”
“Wow…” Yamilet snickered and shook her head. “I just…I c-can’t wait to make fun of him for th-that the next t-time I see him.”
“As his cousin, I fully condone it,” Mirabel said with a thumbs up. “That dead mouse scarred me for life. Tía Peoa gave him a chanclata and a stern talking to and forced the cat obsession out of him.”
“That’s a relief.” Yamilet sighed and looked up at the sky. “Hey,” she pointed out. “It’s a full moon tonight.”
Mirabel put down her fork and looked up. “Oh yeah, it is!”
“You know, once when I was little I told my mom I wanted to go to the moon,” Yamilet reminisced to her girlfriend.
“Aww, that’s so sweet. And what did she say?”
“She said, ‘if you dream it, it will become possible.’”
“That’s adorable,” Mirabel said.
Yamilet looked down at her food and continued eating her rice, when suddenly Mirabel screamed.
“AAAAAAHHHHH!”
“What is it?” Yamilet said in fear.
“J-J-J-Jaguar! It’s coming to eat us!!!” Mirabel hollered, pointing in the distance.
Yamilet looked over her shoulder in horror. Just as Mirabel had said that, a jaguar leaped out from behind the trees and roared at them with all its might.
Yamilet was utterly shaken. “C-couldn’t you have chosen a better hiding spot for our date, novia?” She exclaimed
“I-I’m sorry!” Mirabel yelped. “But I didn’t expect this to happen!”
The jaguar licked its lips, eyeing its delicacy, tragedy about to strike.
Yamilet burst into tears, she couldn’t take it anymore.
“That’s it!” Yamilet hollered. “I can’t stay! I’m leaving! Come on, Mirabel, why are you still sitting there like a log? We have to get out of here! I expected a romantic dinner, not to beCOME dinner!” She yanked Mirabel out of her seat as the girl looked at her weirdly, and ran for cover.
But she didn’t get far before another jaguar pounced in front of them from the other direction.
Parce.
“Is that Parce?” Mirabel said in shock.
Parce leapt gracefully over the girls and the table both before landing right in front of the other jaguar, who backed away in fear as Parce bore its fangs.
Parce lunged at the other large cat, and Yamilet was flabbergasted—and impressed—to see the two predators fighting.
Mirabel rushed to the table. “I can’t believe it!” She said, watching with a glimmer in her eye.
“They’re fighting!” Yamilet ran to stand beside Mirabel. “It’s a literal cat fight! Eeeek!” She shrieked with glee, and the two girls clutched each other in shock.
Parce and the other jaguar aggressively went at it, both beasts of the jungle clawing at each other and getting increasingly more fierce, until it became clear who was actually dominating the fierce battle.
The enemy jaguar roared in pain as Parce continued to successfully fend her off, Yamilet excitedly watching him tear her to pieces.
“YES!” Yamilet roared, pumping a fist as she jumped up and down with adrenaline. “Rip her apart! Finish her!”
Finally, the other jaguar collapsed to the ground, panting heavily as no more fight was left in her.
“HA! Not so t-t-tough anymore, are you, now?” Yamilet jumped up and down. “That was so fun!” She hugged Mirabel before running up to Parce and hugging him, petting him and stroking his head affectionately. “Who’s a good boy, who’s a good boy! You are! Yes you are!” She kissed Parce’s head, making him purr.
“I know right?” Mirabel agreed, joining in the hug Parce fest. Parce was happy to have two cute young girls snuggling with him.
“Parce, I-I didn’t know you had that in you! I mean, I did, because y-you’re a jaguar, but still, damn!” Yamilet tickled under Parce’s chin. Parce responded by licking Yamilet, and she giggled. “Oh, stop it!” She laughed.
“Are you ready to get back to dinner now that the threat had been neutralized?” Mirabel asked.
“O-of course!” Yamilet said, before looking down at the losing opponent. The poor thing was lying limply on the floor, with her eyes half-lidded and blinking slowly. “Poor baby…is she g-gonna die?”
“Nah, she’s just super tired from, you know, losing the fight,” Mirabel said. “Parce will take care of her.”
“I hope s-so,” Yamilet said. The other jaguar might be a savage that tried to eat them, but she still felt a little bit bad for her. Still, she sat down at the table with Mirabel.
Parce picked up the other jaguar in his mouth by the neck and started carrying her away. But when Yamilet wasn’t looking, the jaguar got up on her own and the two of them ran away.
They caught up to Antonio, who was watching the incident go on from afar.
Antonio climbed down from the tree and beamed, hugging both of his friends. “Congratulations! That was an awesome fight! And I could tell Yamilet liked it!” he said with a toothy grin. Parce and the other jaguar—named Amiga—nuzzled each other tenderly as they purred.
Antonio giggled. “That was fun. Anyway, it’s dinner time for you too, and I know y’all are hungry so…who wants snails?” He presented them with two handfuls of dead snails—which had died of natural causes, of course—and Parce and Amiga looked at them eagerly before digging in.
“I have another surprise,” Mirabel said, and Yamilet was instantly intrigued. Mirabel reached under the cloaked table and pulled out two small pink boxes. Inside them were cupcakes!
She looked lovingly up at Yamilet, who had stars in her eyes. “I know you had a birthday cake with your family already, but it’s the least I could do to make you feel special.” She opened Yamilet’s box before opening her own. “And I brought candles!”
Yamilet gasped, allowing Mirabel to place two candles in Yamilet’s cupcake and lighting them up.
“Each candle symbolizes eight years,” she explained. “And eight times two is sixteen.”
Yamilet’s hands were placed over her mouth as she gasped, tears spilling from her eyes. She was careful not to let them land on the candle or the cupcake frosting. This was too good to be true. She really did have the best girlfriend in all the world. And the best date as well.
“I-I…I don’t know what to say…”
“You don’t have to say anything, mi cielo,” Mirabel explained. “Go on, make a wish already!”
Yamilet closed her eyes and made a wish. I wish for Mirabel and I to be together forever, and to celebrate our birthdays until we are very, very old and grey.
Then she blew out the candles.
💜
“I’m home!” Mirabel announced the moment she locked the door.
Pepa was the first to run and give her a hug. “Mirabel! Are you hurt? Are you okay? You know it’s dangerous to go out at night!”
“I’m fine, Tía, I’m fine!” Mirabel chuckled awkwardly, gently brushing Pepa’s hand aside. “But thanks for worrying about me.”
Dolores and Camilo were at the dinner table.
“Buenas noches, Mira,” Dolores greeted her little cousin. “Did you enjoy your date? Did Yamilet have an excellent birthday?”
“Yes! And she sure did!” Mirabel squealed.
“Did she enjoy the…the-the…” Camilo snickered and his cheeks puffed up. “Did she enjoy the JAGUAR FIGHT?!” He wheezed before exploding into hysterics as he collapsed out of his seat, rolling on the floor and laughing as his face turned red. Meanwhile, Antonio snuck into his bedroom with the help of some birds. If Pepa was worried about Mirabel, as a teenager, being out late at night with no adult supervision, imagine how fearful and rainy she’d be for Antonio’s safety as a five-year-old!
“Yep,” Mirabel said. “Oh, Dolores, you should have seen her face! She enjoyed it thoroughly! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her happier!”
“That’s great! And what about the cupcakes? Did you give her those?”
“I had one and she had one. They tasted good. And—“ she glared at Camilo, who was still laughing over her trying to narrate the events of the evening. “Much better than a dead mouse.” Camilo looked at her with downtrodden eyes, as Mirabel raised an eyebrow. Camilo bowed his head and left the room.
“And I even lit the birthday candles for her. Isn’t that awesome?”
“Of course it’s awesome!” Dolores agreed, a glimmer in her eye. “I am glad you both had fun, Mirabel. I couldn’t not help you as you were the one who helped me get with Mariano and supported me every step of the way.”
Mirabel ran to give her a hug.
“Yeah, and I couldn’t not give her a gift either,” Isabela added as she came down the stairs. “She’s such a nice girl and also has a vicious streak. You couldn’t ask for a better girlfriend, Mira!”
“I know!” Mirabel squealed. “She said she liked the perfumes, by the way!”
“Oh, really? That’s awesome! I can’t wait for her to try them…wait, Mira, why do you look so suspicious?”
Shame clouded Mirabel’s face as she suddenly remembered something. With dread evident in her eyes, she looked in horror down at the mochila she carried around her shoulder. Opening it gingerly, her breath hitched in her throat.
The perfumes were still in there.
“Oh, umm, Isa…”
She looked back up at Isa. And regretted it. Because in Isabela’s eyes were pure, unadulterated, fiery rage.
Mirabel gulped.
“You didn’t give her the presents.”
“H-hey I can explain—“
“YOU DIDN’T GIVE HER THE PRESENTS! HOW COULD YOU?! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU NOW!!!”
Dolores backed away. “I think now is a good time to run. Hm!” She walked calmly up the stairs.
Mirabel took Dolores’ wise advice. She hightailed away from Isabela.
“WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE HER THE PERFUMES, MIRABEL?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! HOW CAN YOU PLAN AN ENTIRE DATE FOR THE GIRL AND YET STILL MANAGE TO BE THIS FORGETFUL AND SCATTERBRAINED?! HUH?!”
Mirabel screamed as she ran throughout Casita, Isabela running after her.
Julieta walked down the stairs, yawning. “What is this nonsense? Girls, it is night. Stop causing so much commo—“
But Isabela wasn’t listening as she continued playing murder tag with Mirabel.
Realizing it was a lost cause, Julieta sighed. “Whatever. Don’t break anything. Night.”
“Goodnight Mami!” The girls replied, before Isabela continued her rage-motivated hunt.
