Cuddling: The Best Medicine (Wintershock)

“Hey Dude, I read that cuddling helps you sleep better. Want to try it out?”

Bucky Barnes and sleep were not always on good terms, but add in PTSD and vicious jet lag and it turned into full on estrangement. He wandered the halls of Avengers Tower, trying to shake off the effects of a nightmare triggered by a frustrating mission that had left most of the Avengers worse for wear, including Steve, who’d been hospitalized, which was very rare for him.

Despite the fact that Steve’s current injuries were in no way Bucky’s fault, seeing Steve bloodied and unconscious had brought up ugly memories of when he’d almost beaten his best friend to death and the resulting nightmare had been one of the worst he’d had.

The sound of soft laughter drew him into the large home theater that Tony had spared no expense on and was a favorite spot for Avengers movie nights.

At this time time of day, he was surprised anyone was using it, but sure enough, when he snuck in, there was a woman curled up in one of the stuffed recliners, looking very cozy and giggling at the sitcom she was watching.

He vaguely recognized the cute chuckles and dark hair as belonging to one Darcy Lewis, who helped in the science labs and whom he’d only encountered from afar. He’d heard stories, though and he’d been more than a little intrigued.

He hesitated, then started to back out of the room when an amused voice spoke up.

“Don’t be shy, Buck-o. There’s plenty of room in my all night binge parties. I’ll even share my Cheetos. Jet Lag is a bitch, I tell you.”

He stared.

“How did you know?…..” He asked incredulously. Darcy must have had eyes in the back of her head or something.

She chuckled again and his stomach did a little flip.

“A combination of knowing the Avengers very well and a process of elimination. Clint would have come in via an air vent, Tony would be obnoxiously loud, Bruce keeps strict bedtimes, and Thor and Natasha are keeping Steve company at the hospital right now, bless his heart. I heard it was a close call.”

“Yeah,” Bucky sighed, slowly moving to take up position in one of the other seats. “Way too close.”

He grimaced again.

“And your brain’s making you relive it.” Darcy observed matter of factly, turning down the volume on the TV and turning to face him. “I’m Darcy Lewis, by the way.”

“Bucky Barnes.”

Darcy was even cuter up close, he noticed as they shook hands.

“I totally get the not-wanting-to-go-back-to-sleep feeling. I had some bad nights myself after the Dark Elves incident.” Darcy added sympathetically, holding out the bag of cheetos. “Want some?”

Too polite to refuse, he took a handful and popped them in his mouth. Surprised by how tasty they were, he went back for another round.

Darcy smiled.

“You like them?”

“Yep. I can’t believe I haven’t tried them before. Big mistake.”

“Better late than never, dude. Wanna watch Ghosts with me?”

She gestured to the screen. “It’s pretty funny.”

“Will you tell me about the dark elves, first?” He asked. “That sounds like a whale of a tale.”

She smiled at him and he felt a little warm from the beauty of it.

“Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!”

And so she launched into an animated retelling of the adventure in London and Bucky was deeply engrossed and found himself chuckling at her commentary and was sorry when it was over.

“Wow. You’ve seen some crazy shit, haven’t you? No wonder hanging out with Avengers doesn’t faze you. You didn’t even look scared at me.”

“Why would I be scared of you?” She questioned. “You’re Bucky effing Barnes: badass sniper with a teddy bear heart.”

Bucky blushed at her assessment and grinned sheepishly, completely flustered by her. He couldn’t remember the last time a woman had thrown him off balance like this. But Darcy, with her refreshing frankness, twinkly blue eyes and Stranger Things pajamas had managed to do just that in less than half an hour.

“Oh, and by the way, dude, I’ve read that cuddling helps you sleep better. Wanna try it out?” she offered, with an encouraging grin.

“My cuddling skills are a little rusty, doll,” he flirted back. “You’ll probably have to give me some lessons.”

“Oh, I am an expert cuddler,” Darcy promised. “I’ll have you a champ at it again in no time. I bet you’ve cuddled a dame or two in your time. Now get over here.”

Obediently, Bucky sat down beside her in her chair and it didn’t take long before they were very cozy together and Darcy very much lived up to her claims of expert cuddling.

“Ooh. You’re like a giant heating pad,” she observed from her position nestled against his side. “Very nice.”

“You’re very nice,” he returned sweetly, booping her nose. She giggled and reached for the remote.

Natasha found them the next morning fast asleep together, Bucky’s arm around Darcy and her hand clasping his metal one.

She smiled softly and left them alone.

He was kinda shitty, but like, when you're on his good side, he'll kill for you...he'd also kill for fun, but you know what I mean. He loved his brother in his own way, but it was real, he loved his people in his own weird twisted way, but it was also real, and he redeemed himself, twice, so all the kuddos to him.

let's see what we have...

okay we've talked about househusband!avenger!bucky before so let's talk about him more

after you guys got together and years of saving the world, fighting with the bad guys and all, bucky wants to retire from all of that

you support him about it because it's you who knows about his nightmares, the amount of nights that he skips sleep and how actually tired he is. so you support him

it doesn't take long for him to retire: one meeting with all the team members, and he's retired

after he's out of the team, bucky wanted to move out of the tower which you supported him on that, too. you moved out, found a very nice and not too big or not too small apartment with a nice view, you moved there quickly. you've hand picked all the furniture and steve had donated a couple of his paintings as a house gift

now you have a very cozy and beautiful home

alpine, being the king of the castle, would lounge at the balcony in springs and summers, then he'd move onto lounge on bucky season when winter and fall come

cherry, a puppy bucky brought home on a rainy day, would lounge with alpine usually. they would play and pass out with alpine laying on top of her, or both of them laying on top you and bucky

you love your new life. you love your home

bucky is happier, you realize. he's home, cooking and cleaning and knitting still. you offer him to help whenever you catch him do something and when he agrees, it turns into a very domestic scene which you love that, too

after a year and a half you've spent time in this new life, bucky comes up to you and tells you that he wants to open a shop sort of thing

"what do you mean?" you ask and watch bucky blush adorably. bucky shrugs, grabbing alpine and hugging him to his chest, he sits down in front of you on the kitchen table

"i want to open a shop," he repeats, but then continues. "sort of like a bakery, you know i love to bake, and maybe a little knitting place in it?" you raise your brows and bucky's blush darkens. "i, uh, i talked to sam and he said some veterans like to knit and maybe i can have them over to give them something to do. i thought we could sell what we make and maybe we could give all the money to the veterans who have a hard time to afford prosthetics? tony said he'd help."

you are speechless, but you want to scream at the world that you fucking love this man

"uhh," you start, then blink a couple times. "bucky that's... that's great, baby! that's a great idea and the supporting the veterans thing! i love it! yes, alright, how can i help?"

three months later, bucky opened a bakery/knitting store in brooklyn: cherry knits

you had told him that he could also take cherry with him when he's at the shop, and you could look into the programs where you can make cherry a therapy dog, and bucky loved the idea. so much so that he named the shop after her

as soon as it's open, it started to work really well

bucky was adamant on hiring only students or veterans to work with him, it was all benefiting someone in someway

bucky would teach veterans how to knit (he even looked it up how to knit with one hand, you fucking love this man) and to those who are interested, bucky would also teach baking, too

sometimes kids would join them on their knitting time: creating a very warm environment and making everyone laugh or chuckle with the childish way they think

cherry was a blast, so bucky said he wanted to adopt a couple more dogs and trained them for the same purpose and you agreed. you love seeing him happy and this is making happy, you think

one day when you step into the shop, you catch bucky cradling a five-year-old boy with one arm (cancer, he later filled you in) to his chest while showing him how to do the frosting on a vanilla cake. they are smiling a little, you realize and you can't help your own smile spreading on your face. the scene in front of you is so cute, so sweet, you feel yourself tear up a bit

because in this short amount of time, bucky had touched so many lives and had made them so much better... you feel like you don't deserve him

he helped countless of veterans, he taught them how to knit and after they got the hang of it, many incredible things have been created and tony, like he said he'd help, organized a charity gala sort of thing where they got to sell the things they knitted. bucky taught them how to bake and cook sometimes, helped a lot of veterans to find jobs at a bakery or a restaurant (the ones that don't require the schooling, at least)

your therapy dogs (cherry, berry, plum and sugar) were a hit. they are loved by the vets and the kids, most of the times bringing laughter into the shop. they helped vets to get used to the contact, the touch

watching something blossoming like this feels amazing, you think and sigh deeply, happily

"hey," bucky comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist. "what do you think?"

you lean against him and kiss his chin. "that i'm so fucking proud of you." you turn around in his arms and hook your own around his neck. "i love you, bucky," you say. "everything you've done... i'm so damn proud of you."

bucky smiles at you, tears in his eyes and cute blush on his cheeks. "i love you, too, honey," he whispers. "couldn't have done any of them without your support. i'm proud of us."

you smile and pull him down for a kiss. you pull them a couple seconds later. "you have any empty place for another kid?" you ask, and bucky looks at you frowning.

"if i didn't, i'd create one, you know it," he says and you grin. you know he would really do that

"good. because in nine months you gonna need one." you feel him stiffen, get even more confused. chucking a little, you decide to put him out of his misery. "i'm pregnant."

you will never ever forget how his face lightened up, how big he smiled and that victory scream. your grin widen

"am i gonna be a father?" he asks and you nod. a second later you are scooped up and hugged by your teddy bear of a man tightly. his laughter is ringing in your ears like a beautiful song

he is happy. he is in love. and you aren't too far behind

CAN WE PLEASE TAKE A SECOND TO LOOK AT A ONE JAMES BUCHANAN BARNES IN THIS SCENE PLEASE. (excuse the crap quality)

Look at how he holds himself, arm straight at his side, body tense, head lowered, same as everyone else... but that left hand, the way that he flexes it while bowing his head, like he’s too late, like he wants to do more but can’t, kind of resigned like his strings are about to be cut, like he’s coming to terms with the fact that the killing will. just. never. stop.

This is Bucky remembering clear as day how he killed both of Tony’s parents, how his actions as the Winter Soldier drove a wedge between Steve and Tony that they never fully recovered from, how he never got closure with Howard’s kid, never got to apologize or talk with him, how he wasn’t able to protect him, the same way he wasn’t able to protect Howard and Maria from Hydra.

This is Bucky mourning for a friendship that he never had, for time lost. And then this last gif is when his strings are cut, when he realizes that this is where he loses Steve, that Tony’s death changes everything and nothing will ever be the same again.

You excused yourself from the team to go to the bathroom. You went out of the VIP room that Tony reserved for the team's celebration of the recent mission, and when you were walking towards the restroom, someone called your name.

Upon hearing the voice calling your name, a certain familiarity go through your mind.

You turned around and confirmed your hunch. You saw your ex-boyfriend, who is still a good friend of yours, approaching you. His name is Harry and the two of you used to be a couple for 2 years during your high school days. However, the relationship didn't last as you both realized that you two wanted to grow into different paths in the future. In other words, you wanted to grow apart for each other's good. But despite the break-up, you two had a good closure and stayed friends. The two of you weren't able to keep in touch since you had to move to a different place.

"Oh, I knew it was you," Harry stood in front of you, a smile on his face was plastered, "It's so good to see you," he opened his arms, motioning to give you a hug, which you did not think twice of accepting.

"Harry, nice to see you too," you told him and pull yourself away from his arms gently. "Didn't think I'd see you here," you commented.

He chuckled, "I know," he brushed his finger through his hair, "I just took my daughter and my wife for a dinner. I've been pretty busy with my work and this is my way of making it up to them," he revealed.

"Woah, so you're a family man now, huh?" you couldn't feel happier for him even more, and he answered you with a nod, "That's very good to hear, Harry. It's so good to see you happy and living a family man's life."

You are really happy for him, knowing that you only wished for his happiness when the two of you broke up, and you wished that even though you're not part of that happiness, it's okay. As long as he's happy, genuinely happy.

"How 'bout you?" he changed the topic, crossing his arms in front of his chest, "I bet you're having a good life as an Avenger. I always see you and your team in the news."

You chuckled, "I'm having the best time of my life, to be honest. Aside from the fact that I get to save people's lives and make our world a better place, I get to meet the family I never thought I'd have," you told him.

He knew that you grew up with your grandparents as your guardian, your biological parents died in a plane crash and that made you an orphan at an early age. That's why when you saw a family in the personality of your friends like Steve, Nat, Wanda, Tony, Bucky, and the rest of the Avengers, you became the happiest.

"I'm happy to know that, y/n," he said.

"They're actually inside the VIP room. Tony decided that we should have a celebratory dinner for tonight after our mission to Siberia," you said, then you saw how his eyes went to the VIP room you point your fingers at. "You want to meet them?" you asked him.

His eyes went back to you, "Really? That'd be awesome," he excitedly uttered, "Meeting the world's superheroes would be nice."

So you and Harry went back to the VIP room and entered the room, making everyone inside turned their attention on you and the man behind you.

You scanned each of your friends' faces and you saw them looking at Harry.

"Hmm everyone, this is Harry," you tapped Harry's shoulder as you introduce him to your friends, "He's a good friend of mine way back in high school and after a few years of not seeing each other, here we are."

"Hi, Harry," Tony waved his hand to the man beside you now.

"Oh, God, can't believe I'm meeting you all," Harry commented as he shakes the hands of your friends.

You saw your friends standing up to make an effort to shake the hand Harry, but when you saw Bucky still sitting on his seat, you were puzzled to see him staring at you blankly. His eyes left you for a while and switched it to Harry, then moved it back to you again, giving you an unknown kind of stare.

Uh-oh, looks like someone's having an attitude.

Instead of paying attention to your boyfriend's cocky attitude, you walked towards behind him and put your hands on his shoulders, "Harry, this is Bucky," Harry's eyes went to you and Bucky, "He's my boyfriend."

Harry walked towards Bucky and extended his hand to your guy, "Nice to meet you, Bucky," he said.

You gave Bucky's shoulder a squeeze to motion him to shake Harry's hand, gladly he listened to your action.

"Nice to meet you too, Harry," he casually said, but you knew something's off with him.

Seems like you'll have to endure his cocky attitude for the whole night.

"So is that the same Harry you were telling Nat that you dreamed of marrying one day?" finally Bucky speaks up as soon as you both got to your room in the compound. He's been quiet the whole time you two were on your way back to the compound, and you exactly knew what his silence is all about.

You sat down on the edge of your bed and unzip the boots you were wearing, while Bucky is leaning against the wall beside the door and giving you a look.

"So that's what this is all about, huh?" you stood up and put your boots on the side of your closet, "You've been acting weird because of this nonsense?" you asked him.

"You call this nonsense? Come on, y/n, he's your first love for Christ's sake," he said in a higher voice.

Harry was your first love, but that doesn't give any importance right now or any time in the future, especially now that you have Bucky.

"First love my ass, Bucky. If you and I would just argue and fight over something stupid, just go to your room and leave me alone," you rolled your eyes and shook your head in disbelief.

You were pissed, not only by the fact that you and Bucky are fighting over something stupid but also by the fact that you thought of ending this night with a bang. You planned on giving Bucky the best way to relax after your exhausting mission in Siberia. You thought of the two of you fucking until the sun rises in the morning.

You walked towards your dresser to pick up a nice and clean pair of pajamas, but while you're choosing the perfect pair, you felt Bucky's hand on your arm and he gently forced you to face him and look him in his eyes, "What do you want?" you growled at him.

Compared to his face a few minutes ago when you two entered your room, he's calmer now.

Bucky sighed, "I'm sorry," he apologized.

His vibranium hand moved to cup your cheek, while his other hand held you in your arms, feeling his soft touch and the warmth of it.

"You know I hate it when we fight, right?" he asked you, which you nodded in response, "I just...I don't...fuck," he cursed then shook his head before continuing his sentence, "I'm just really afraid to lose you. The fact that you're too good for me makes me so afraid to lose you, the love of my life."

When Bucky confessed his feelings for you, the two of you did not become a couple instantly. He told you that despite the intensity of his love for you, he doesn't want you to be with someone with a dark past. But you told him that it's already too late for him to warn you because you're already madly and deeply in love with him. You made him realized that his past should not and never stop him from being happy and that his past should not dictate what should he choose in the present, as well as in the future.

"Oh, love, come here," you softly said as you use both of your hands to cup his face, "You will never lose me. And how many times did I tell you not to say or even think that you don't deserve me just because of what happened in your past. That wasn't you, Bucky. This is you, the real you. And Harry may be my first love, and even people say that first love never dies, keep in mind that I don't believe in that shit because it doesn't matter to me who my first love was or who's who, what's important to me is you," you used your thumb to caress his cheeks, "Always you."

A smile finally forms in his kissable and irresistible lips.

"I love you, woman."

You grinned, "I love you more, Sergeant," you said, then you slide your right hand to the collar of his jacket, "Now make love to me."

He smirked, "Your wish is my command," he said before he crashed your lips using his lips.
