This may be an old article from 3 years ago, but these cultural aspects/observations still apply even today. And though this is strictly a Chinese perspective, a lot of these everyday life bits are observed in Overseas Chinese communities in countries such as The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. as well as countries heavily influenced by Chinese culture like Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
I've always liked learning about other cultures and making comparisons between how things are done East vs West. Which probably stems from growing up with two cultures and Mom raising me on American movies xD
So the irony is if you asked me how many Chinese, Taiwanese, or Hong Kong actors I know, chances are I know as much as you do xD Like Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, and that's about it. But if you asked me about Western (specifically American and British) actors, then I have a useless brain dump of movie trivia and who was with who in what movie xD
Hmmm, both Taiwan and the Philippines are two distinct cultures but both look up to a certain country and are fascinated by that. In Taiwan's case, Japan and the US for the Philippines. In both cases, this is due to being under the rule of those countries in their history. Taiwan being under Japan for 50 years, and the Philippines being under Spain for 300+ years, followed by periods of American and Japanese rule. To put it simply though:
Taiwan is "mini-Japan with a very Chinese culture".
The Philippines is "former colony of Spain with lots of American influences".
But unlike the author, I've never set foot in any Western country, so my understandings are strictly what I've observed in media, which while it can be accurate, doesn't compare to actually experiencing the culture.
Some further elaboration on most points:
#1 We quite literally use chopsticks for everything. We use it to pick rice, viands, vegetables, fruit, smaller desserts, almost all the food you can think of.
But where do you put your chopsticks when you're not using them? Just put them on top of your bowl or flat on your plate. But do not ever stick them vertically. It's taboo, since it looks like incense sticks, which we use to pray for those who have passed, like our ancestors or during funerary services.
Tumblr media
#3 The majority of Asia is obsessed with fair/white skin. In my time at the Philippines, I grew up watching all these Dove Whitening commercials and my classmates often commented on how fair my skin was, how they envied it etc. In Taiwan, girls often say they don't want to 變黑 (biàn hēi) 'become dark'. Japan and Korea too are not innocent of this either (if their beauty/skin products weren't a dead giveaway).
People here at Taiwan often mistake me for being from Hong Kong or Japan (as long as I don't speak Mandarin with my heavy accent xD). A Taiwanese classmate of mine joked that she often gets mistaken for being from Southeast Asia due to having a darker complexion. And while I laughed it off with her at that time, looking back, I now realize she was lowkey being racist. xD
And believe me Filipinas have mentioned literally being told 'your skin is so dark' here in Taiwan, or being given backhanded compliments like 'you're pretty despite having dark skin' and...*facepalms*
My point is, beauty is not exclusive to skin color. People who still think that are assholes.
Tumblr media
#5 Not to say we don't have salt and pepper, but yes soy sauce and vinegar are the classic condiments you see on the table, be it at home or at a restaurant.
And if I may add, Taiwanese love their pepper. xD If you ever get to eat at a night market or a smaller "Mom n' Pop-style" restaurant here, some dishes/soups tend to add quite an excessive amount of pepper. Not like anthills, but quite liberally and way more than average. Enough that you see traces of pepper at the bottom of the food paper bag or swirling in your soup. xD
#6 I know this all too well from personal experience. In my years of studying at Taiwan, I always had roommates. 3 in my first school (I graduated high school in the Philippines pre K-12 so I had to make up 2 years of Senior High), followed by 2 in college, with the exception of 1 in freshman year.
My college did offer single person dorms but at around 9000 NTD ($324) per month compared to around 6000 NTD ($216) per semester. Because I wanted to save, the choice was obvious for me xD. But ah, this doesn't mean I don't value personal space, in fact I love having the room to myself, and since both my roomies would go home to their families every weekend, weekends were bliss for me xD
And you don't have to be friends with your roommates (that's an added bonus however), you just have to get along with them. I was quite lucky to have really great roommates all throughout my schooling years.
#9 In the Philippines, we do. Owing mostly to American influences and maybe being predominantly Catholic? xD
#10 *sigh* Chinese parents and parents from similar Asian cultures tend to put too much emphasis on grades, so much that kids could get sent to cram school as early as elementary. This is because what school you get into could literally affect your future job opportunities, and while that's not exclusive to any particular country/culture, I feel it's especially pronounced here in Asia. I'm really lucky my own parents weren't that strict about it. However, if your parents don't point the mistakes out to you, chances are you'll do it yourself, if you're an Asian kid like me anyway. xD It just becomes a habit.
#11 My family is an exception to this. xD We do say 'I love you' directly, but complete with the 'ah eat well ok?', 'don't scrimp on food', 'sleep well' and similar indirect words/actions of affection. We were doing 'Conceal, Don't Feel' before it became popular. xD
Tumblr media
#13 I'm kind of confused about this but this has sort have changed over the years in which eye-contact is now more encouraged. But don't stare, especially at elders and authority figures. Sometimes it's just shyness though. xD And I've observed this with my own Taiwanese friend, especially when I'm complaining or ranting to her about something. xD I'm a person who likes to express my opinions strongly, which tends to scare/alienate some of the locals here, as doing so is kind of frowned upon. Thankfully, she does listen and offers her take on things.
#14 Ah this. xD In the Philippines, this is a common greeting known as beso-beso, and I freaked out too when an auntie did that to me. xD Needless to say, Mom lectured me later on what that was. ^^"
#16 Along with #3 another crazy beauty standard. In my view, people always look better with a little meat on them and when they're not horribly thin. Asia still has a loonng way to go with accepting different types of bodies if you ask me. This combined with modern beauty standards has made the pressure for women especially to 'look beautiful' higher than ever.
Tumblr media
I know many people love them but please, starving yourself or glorifying eating disorders is never OK just to get this kind of 'ideal' body. I'm not part of the Kpop fandom, but even I think when idols get bullied just for gaining the least bit of weight among other insensitive comments, that's really going too far.
#17 'If you want to make friends, go eat.' <- I couldn't agree more. In the Philippines we have a greeting: 'Kumain ka na ba?' (Have you eaten?) . Similarly in Taiwan, we have 吃飯了沒? (chī fàn le méi), both of these can mean that in the literal sense but are often used as greetings instead. By then which invitation to having lunch/dinner together may or may not follow. Food really is a way for us to socialize and to catch up with what's going on in each other's lives. Not to say we don't have regular outings like going out to the mall, going shopping, etc. but eating together is a huge part of our culture, be it with family or friends.
And while I'm at it, some memes that are way too accurate good to pass up xD
Tumblr media
Parents, uncles, aunties alike will fight over the bill xD
Tumblr media
Alternatively:
Tumblr media
You just space out until your name is called xD
Tumblr media
My parents are guilty of the last one. Logic how? xD
#18 True. xD I like giving compliments out to people but I have a hard time accepting them myself, though I've learnt how to accept them much more now than before. We're kind of raised to constantly downplay ourselves so we often say things like 'ah no no' or 'I'm really not that good'. The downside of this of course is that it can come off as somewhat fake. xD
Again from personal experience, that same classmate who made the lowkey racist remark, she was good, she was on the debate team, was a honor student, knew how to mingle with people, but she downplayed herself way too much, while praising me but I honestly thought that she never really meant it from how she treated me. She wanted to keep me around her yet make backhanded compliments at me and she didn't want me socializing with my other classmate who is now my friend. *sigh* It was only after discussing this with one of my roomies did I realize how this 'excessive downplaying' might come off to people like me who more or less grew up with a more 'Westernized' mindset. I'm not saying brag about your achievements but don't be overly humble about them either, which can also be a turn off.
#20 We do tend to be a lot more realistic on how we view things, neither entirely optimistic nor pessimistic. We try to think of things practically and often analyze things on pure logic. A downside of this however, is that Chinese people can be overly practical. Taiwanese for instance don't like to 'find inconveniences' and generally keep to themselves, meaning, they won't help you in your hour of need even when they do have the capabilities. Sounds really harsh I know, but in my 6 years of living in Taiwan, while this doesn't apply to all the people, a lot of them really do only find/talk to you when they need something.
So for some people saying Taiwanese are 'friendly', that's BS xD If you ask me, Filipinos are infinitely more friendly, and again while not all, generally make more of an effort to help you when you need it. I really felt more of a real sense of community during my years growing up in the Philippines compared to Taiwan.
#21 Children do tend to stay with their parents well into college and adulthood, since Chinese families are indeed very family-oriented, in a lot of cases, grandparents often live under the same roof as us as well! And it really does save a lot of money. I see there's a real stigma in the US when it comes to "living with your parents", but that's starting to change especially because of Covid and having more and more people move back in with their parents.
Housing unfortunately is pretty much hella expensive no matter where you go, and Taiwan is no exception. Steep housing prices and the very high cost of raising a child (schooling + buxiban fees, etc.) contribute to a very low birth rate and thus an aging population like Japan. It's not uncommon to see both parents working in Taiwan.
#23 I'm an overthinker myself, but I totally agree with the author that the best is to strike a good balance between these two. Which I guess is why I love drawing or any other related creative attempts, it helps me be more spontaneous or well, creative! I like to remain intellectually or artistically inspired.
#24 Is French high school really like that? xD My friend did watch SKAM France and more or less got a culture shock from what was depicted on the show. I can confirm however that most high schools both in the Philippines and Taiwan require students to wear a uniform, only in college is everybody free to wear casual/civilian clothes.
#26 Ah this is part of our Asian gift-giving etiquette xD We always open gifts later after the event/meeting and in private. Never open them in front of the person who gave it to you or in front of others. This is to prevent any 'shame/embarrassment' that may result both to yourself and to the gift giver. I know this may come off as something weird since some people may want a more honest response or immediate feedback when it comes to gift-giving, but that's just how it is in our culture. You're always free to ask us though (in private) if we liked the gift or not ^^"
#28 I want to say the same goes to drinking, partying, and drugs however xD Those are things which are still frowned upon in our culture. And to be honest, whenever I see those in movies, it does kind of turn me off xD It doesn't mean that we're "uncool" or "boring", we just think that there are much better or healthier ways of "having fun".
#31 Is this true in France?! Man I would kind of prefer that instead of people being on their phones all the time xD This kind of goes with #20 in that Chinese are overly practical or logical, and don't read fiction as much as nonfiction. My Taiwanese friend is an exception though, she's a bibliophile who loves the feel of paper books compared to e-books, and it's a trait of her that I like a lot. Both the Philippines and Taiwan however have a huge fanbase when it comes to manga and anime though.
I'm all for reading outside of "designated reading" at schools especially. Reading fiction improves your vocabulary too, and can be quite fun! It helps you imagine and really invest in a world/story, and if you ask me something that I feel Westerners are better at, they're more in touch with their emotions and creativity, and are thus much more able to write compelling or original stories. Believe me, I've seen a fair amount of Chinese movies that rip off Western movie plotlines xD
#33 Nothing much to add on here..except that since I'm a "weird" person, Mom often jokes that she got the wrong baby from the hospital. xD
#35 True. While I agree with the care and concern that your fellow community can give you, the downside of this is we tend to only hang out with our own people, e.g Chinese with Chinese, Taiwanese with Taiwanese, etc. I've seen too that it's especially hard to make friends in Japan and Korea as a foreigner. Not only is there the language barrier, but the differences in culture too. In a way, Asians can be pretty close-minded on getting to know other cultures or actually making friends with people from other countries. I know this all too well being half-Taiwanese/half-Filipino, being neither "Filipino" enough nor "Taiwanese" enough. xD It's more of people here being too used to what they're comfortable with.
#36 Oh this is something I feel that Chinese students and other students from similar cultures should really improve on. xD How will people respect you if you don't speak your mind?
I felt bad especially for my Spanish teacher in college, granted it was an introductory course (Spanish I and II) but the amount of times that our teacher had to prompt a student to recite/speak even with clear hints already made her (and me too) extremely frustrated. The thing is, these are college students, I personally feel they don't have any reason to be so shy of speaking and technically by not doing so they're slowing the pace of the class too much and a lot of time is wasted.
Unfortunately you can't always be very vocal with your thoughts and opinions in most Asian cultures. I would say strive for that, but at the same time, play your cards well, especially if you're in a workplace setting.
If you made it to the end, thank you for reading and here's a cookie! 🍪 I'm not perfect and there's bound to be something I missed so please let me know if you spotted anything wrong. Feedback/questions are very much welcome and please feel free to share about your country/culture's differences or similarities!

Chapter One - Once Upon a Time in New York City
The air in New York was hot and muggy, even with the roof of your rental car being down there wasn’t much of a breeze and you were beginning to feel irritable and the smog in the air was heavy. The traffic over here was slow, somehow even slower than it was in London but you knew that it was a small price to pay for your freedom.
When your best friend, Edmund received a chance to study overseas in New York for his final year of college he took the chance straight away and he had pretty much begged you to go with him. You had never known Edmund to beg for anything so you knew that this was serious. You didn’t want to lose your best friend so you agreed to go with him, as did his little sister, Lucy but you didn’t mind, it was her first year at college.
From the back seat you could hear Lucy gasping in awe as she glanced up at the impossibly tall skyscrapers that were beginning to make you feel a little sick, “I love this city already, thanks for letting me come with you guys!”
Ed grimaced as he leaned forwards to turn your rock music down which earned him a scathing glare, “it’s not like we had much of a choice,” he muttered.
You rolled your eyes at Ed before smiling at Lucy in the mirror, “ignore him, Lu. I’m glad that you’re here.”
“Thanks Y/N,” she grinned at you before pulling a tongue at her brother, “I can’t wait to see the loft,” she sighed happily.
Neither of you wanted to stay in some shitty dorm room on campus so ever since you were accepted into NYU, you had begun saving money from your bar job and your student loan. Between the three of you the most you could afford was a loft apartment in Brooklyn. You spotted the moving van a couple of doors down from the loft and got ready to turn into a parking space on the busy street.
As you were reversing into the space, a yellow taxi blared its horn at you as it zoomed past you, “yeah, very nice, arsehole!” you yelled out of the window, knowing the driver couldn’t hear you but it made you feel better all the same.
Edmund rolled his eyes as he fixed you with an unamused look as he ran his fingers through his hair, “I’m beginning to regret asking you to come with me.”
You laughed, winking at him as you got out of the car, “you know that you love me.”
Ed laughed before he bit his lip, looking at you nervously, “you should call your mum, and tell her that you made it here in one piece. I know that you’ve been putting it off Y/N,” he sighed and pulled you into a one armed hug, “you can catch up with us in a bit.”
You sighed as you watched Ed and Lucy walk towards the moving van, he was right – most of the time he was right – you had been putting it off, and for good reason. You dialled your mum’s number as you lit up a cigarette and took a long drag of it. Just as you suspected, you were met with your mum’s voicemail. She was probably out, spending time with her new family, she was almost too happy when you told her that you were moving to New York.
“Hey mum, I’m just calling to let you know that I made it to New York, safe and sound. I didn’t want to call but Ed thought that I should, anyway call me back if you get this. Or don’t, it really doesn’t matter to me either way.”
The lie tasted bitter in your mouth but you didn’t want to dwell on it any longer so you quickly hung up the phone. You rubbed your temples as you took another drag off your cigarette, blowing out a large billow of smoke.
“Do you mind?” you heard a cough with the sound of a smooth honeyed accent. Your gaze started at his feet and you quirked an eyebrow when you saw that he was wearing expensive leather shoes. You travelled up his body with your eyes and they finally came to land on his face.
He had deep brown eyes that were almost black and he was very handsome with thick dark hair and clean stubble along his jaw, he looked just like the brooding hero in all those romance novels. You didn’t want to judge but he looked exactly like a trust fund baby, someone who got whatever they wanted on a silver platter. He coughed again as you blew out more smoke and he ran a hand through his hair, narrowing those gorgeous eyes at you.
“You can clearly see that I’m smoking here, it’s your fault for getting in my way, pretty boy,” you didn’t miss the scowl he shot you as you crushed the stub of your cigarette beneath your shoe as you turned away. You couldn’t let a stranger piss you off, no matter how good looking he was.
As you walked into the loft you were immediately taken aback by how spacious and beautiful it was, it seemed like good value for your money which was extremely rare in a big city. You decided that you were going to take the smallest room – you wanted Ed and Lucy to have the most luxurious rooms – but it seemed that you definitely got the room with the best view. New York was such a beautiful city and you were so glad that you got to live here.
As you were coming out of the room that you had claimed as your own, you noticed that the handsome stranger was in your apartment. Suspicion ran through your body as you narrowed your eyes at him, “what the fuck are you doing here?”
He opened his mouth to reply but before he could, Edmund came striding into the apartment, carrying a cardboard box, “Y/N, this is Caspian; he’s offered to help us move in.”
“How nice,” you smiled tightly, Caspian was a trust fund name, you were sure of that.
Caspian raised an eyebrow and he smirked at you, and you ignored the way that his deep brown eyes sparkled. You just wanted a quiet final year of college; you wouldn’t let a handsome young man ruin it. You had worked too hard to be here.
When Caspian walked out of the loft with Ed, Lucy smirked at you, “Caspian’s cute isn’t he?”
You laughed as you unpacked the kitchen boxes, “suppose so, for a trust fund baby.”
“What makes you think that’s he’s got a trust fund?” Lucy asked as she leaned against the kitchen counter.
“Come on Lu, his shoes cost more than our rent, it’s obvious that he’s rolling in money, and with a name like Caspian,” you let out a low whistle, “the evidence speaks for itself.”
Finally, you were all moved in – and Caspian had thankfully left, turning down Edmund’s offer to stay for a drink – it was early evening and your breath was stolen away by how pretty the sky looked. It was all pink and orange hues, and you were almost certain that you’d enjoy living here. New York seemed like such a romantic city – despite the smog – every story that was worth reading began in New York City.
Edmund grinned at you and flung an arm around your shoulders, “are you hungry? We were thinking about ordering pizza.”
You shook your head, although the notion of pizza sounded amazing, “no can do I’m afraid, I gonna go out and actually look for a job. How else are we going to be able to pay the rent?” you smiled.
Lucy raised her eyebrow at you, “Y/N, we’ve literally been here for a few hours and already you’re thinking about getting a job?”
You nodded at her as you kissed Edmund’s cheek, “you guys know how much I worry,” you laughed as you shrugged on your leather jacket, “I’ll see you guys later, and make sure to save some pizza for me.”
“I can’t make any promises,” Ed called after you, making you laugh.
You forgot just how hard it was to get a bartending job as you walked down the streets of New York, it had grown cool now and you wrapped your jacket tighter around your body. Finally, you came up outside a bar called; Aslan’s which had a golden lion on a field of red on the sign. Even from the outside it looked like a dive bar but you supposed that beggars couldn’t be choosers.
The bar stank of stale beer and cigarette smoke, and the floor was incredibly sticky. There was a pool table in the middle of the room and a juke box in one corner, playing loud music. The bar was a complete dive to be sure but you could also tell that it held a lot of character. You smiled at the sandy haired bartender; “I was wondering whether I could speak to the manager?” the bartender nodded and smiled at you as he walked into the back.
A couple of moments later, the bartender returned with an older man, the older man grinned at you as he offered you his hand, his eyes twinkling kindly, “I’m Aslan, the owner,” his voice had an Irish twang to it and you offered him a small smile. You were kind of surprised that he was the owner, he looked like a complete dad, and you had expected someone with tattoos and piercings, not a man in a cable jumper with his hand wrapped around a Spiderman mug.
“I’m Y/N; I was wondering whether I could give you my resume?”
“Certainly,” he smiled and you handed it over and his eyes scanned it before he glanced at you with a raised eyebrow, “are you a university student?” he smiled when you nodded, “have you done bar work before?”
“Yes sir,” you nodded, “I worked in a busy bar in the centre of London for a couple of years,” his eyes widened slightly and you could tell that he was impressed.
“Come in for a trial shift on Saturday so I can see what you’re made of.”
You breathed out a sigh of relief, this was better than you could have hoped for, “I’d be glad to, thank you so much, Aslan.”
----------------------------------
Caspian knew that pre law would be difficult but he just had no idea, after only a couple of days he was exhausted. It seemed strange but he was happy, no matter how exhausted he was. He had a deal with his parents where they agreed that he could go to a school of his choice where nobody knew him. He didn’t want people to treat him any differently.
Edmund – one of his first friends from class – grinned as he clapped Caspian on the shoulder as they made their way across campus, “that Professors kind of a hard arse, huh?” he chuckled, mirth lighting up his freckled face.
Caspian smiled in response as he ran a hand through his hair, “I think that’s the lawyer that we should all strive to be.”
Ed chuckled as he looked across the quad and pointed, “oh, hey there’s Y/N. You remember her?”
Caspian glanced up and saw the pretty girl in a Sex Pistols shirt and ripped jeans with red converse. She carried an easel over her shoulder, she didn’t strike Caspian as the artistic type, “how could I forget?”
Edmund smiled as he pulled his friend into a hug, “hey, Y/N, you remember, Caspian?”
Y/N smirked as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and she looked Caspian up and down in a way that made him feel small. He flushed and looked away from her burning gaze, “of course I remember, Cas.”
“Caspian,” he spoke through gritted teeth as he felt a wave of annoyance wash over him as she smirked.
If Ed sensed the tension he didn’t say anything, instead he flung an arm over her shoulders, “are you coming to the party tonight?”
Y/N grimaced as she shook her head as she placed a cigarette between her red painted lips, “Aslan needs me to work a shift tonight, clearly I got through the trial period successfully,” she laughed.
Caspian raised his eyebrow at her in surprise, “you work at Aslan’s?” he chuckled, “isn’t it a shit hole?” he had never gone in and he had no intention of doing so.
Y/N glared at him, if looks could kill, he’d already be six feet under, “it’s got character, I wouldn’t expect someone,” she trailed off as she looked him up and down, a scowl on her face, “like you to understand.”
Her insinuation made his blood boil, he was starting to like her less and less by the second, “what the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Y/N opened her mouth to answer, most definitely with a scathing retort on her lips but Ed cut her to the chase, “I’m gonna go get a pretzel, does anyone want one?” he walked off before either of them could reply.
The tension was unbearable in the hot and heavy air, Caspian scowled at Y/N while she looked up at him as she took another drag of her cigarette, she looked completely unbothered. In fact, Caspian thought he saw amusement glitter in her eyes. Caspian coughed as the billow of smoke she blew out went right in his face. Normally he wouldn’t have cared but there was just something about Y/N that made him want to piss her off.
“Do you really have to do that here?” he grimaced.
Y/N smirked around the end of her cigarette but Caspian noticed that she turned to the side slightly so the smoke went in the opposite direction and he opened his mouth to thank her, stopping short when she replied, “last time I checked, this was a free country, Cas.”
Caspian clenched his jaw so tightly that he was afraid that he’d break his teeth but he didn’t bother correcting Y/N on his name. He wanted to ask her why she had it out for him, it had seemed that way ever since they met. Instead, what came out of her mouth was a stupid observation.
“I didn’t peg you for the artistic type,” he swallowed as she paused and looked up at him, the glimmer of a scowl on her face, “I had you down for a Psychology major or something, maybe that would explain why you’re manipulative,” his words were harsh but she didn’t even flinch as she crushed the stub of her cigarette beneath her shoe.
She looked away from him, wrapping her arms around herself, even though the day was warm. A flicker of emotion that he hadn’t seen before flickered across her face, “I used to paint with my dad, from a young age,” she looked back at him, that smirk was back on her face, “pre law, huh? That’s exactly the sort of major I’d expect from a trust fund baby.”
He let out a laugh and noticed that Ed was finally on his way back, pretzel in hand, “what makes you think that I’m a trust fund baby?” he asked, biting his lip.
Y/N raised an eyebrow, “oh sweetheart, with expensive clothes like that,” she gestured down at his outfit, making him scowl, “and such a pretty face, how could you not be?” she turned around to take a bit out of Edmund’s pretzel, laughing when Ed shouted out in dismay.

Prompt: “I heard a rumour.” -- @challengingwords prompt #39
Pairing: Rowoon x female reader
Genre: office au / suggestive
Warnings: a bit of enemies to lovers except the relationship is not fully established.
Word count: 1492
Tumblr media
“I heard a rumour,” Taeyang murmured to you as he sat down with haste. His eyes darted around to ensure it was safe enough to elaborate, soon scooting his chair closer to yours. “Apparently, we’re getting a new manager.”
“Nonsense,” you breathed, rolling your eyes in response. “I got told if there was ever a need for new management that I would be offered the role.”
“That’s what we all thought, but Penelope was just telling Jaeyoon that-”
“Rumours are just that,” you interjected firmly, your eyes travelling back to the computer screen in front of you. “Unless it’s based on factual evidence, there’s no point to buying into uncredited information.”
However, you were stunned when your boss Marion introduced a tall man to you all as your new manager the following Monday.
Your mind was reeling. As a senior member of staff, you had been priming for a promotion now for over two years. You had the skillset to become the manager of the department. You knew every person’s weaknesses and strengths to keep the working environment at its best.
You had been convinced it was just a stupid rumour.
So, when the introduction of Kim Rowoon was over, instead of watching the man head to his desk with Penelope and the other females fluttering about, you stormed into your boss’ office and placed your hands onto your hips.
“What’s this?”
“What’s what, Y/N?”
“You told me I would become manager. In fact, you told my entire team to consider me as that. Now they, and I, have to answer to someone else?”
Marion steepled her fingers together and let out a sigh. “I too answer to higher-ups, Y/N. My hands are tied. When the Chairman’s favourite nephew returned from-”
“Does he have the qualifications?”
“He seems adequate on paper.”
“This is ridiculous!” you whined, and Marion shrugged.
“What do you want me to do? Tell the Chairman that I have someone more capable for the job and that his favourite nephew shouldn’t be placed in charge of the department? I have three kids I need to feed, Y/N. Welcome to the corporate world. The good news is, Rowoon isn’t in charge entirely. On paper, yes, but I’d like you both to work together as a team. You’ll be getting a pay raise too. So essentially, it is the promotion you were aiming for.”
You snorted. “Except not one that allows me to rule on merits alone. I’m not angry at you, just the situation.”
“It might be something amazing. Give Rowoon a chance before you instantly pit him in the other corner of a boxing match, Y/N.”
Tumblr media
It was hard to accept the dual leadership with Rowoon. For one, he had been overseas for the past five years, and the way he led the way was not how it worked here. It clashed with your approach to everything. Therefore, you were always tense in his company.
It only got worse when the new manager’s office was allocated, and you both had to share the space.
“Have you got the report on the Atticus account?” Rowoon asked from his desk, and you looked up at the man and frowned.
“You’re in charge of that account.”
“Yes, but your team cross-checked the numbers for me and were meant to run it past you.”
“My team? Aren’t we meant to be one whole unit? Stop assigning work to me that I’m not a part of from the beginning. If you got someone to run-”
“Okay! Thanks for the pep-talk, Y/N. It’s always a pleasure working with you,” he shot sarcastically as he walked out of the office, and you threw yourself back in your chair, seething at the interaction.
It wasn’t ever going to work between you with this tension.
You did try, the following week, to be less at his throat, but it was a hard pill to swallow answering to Rowoon’s commands. You had established too many well-oiled systems that were foreign to the man, and subsequently, he was relying on you to teach him everything from the ground up.
This meant a lot more overtime than you signed up for.
“Our Chinese is here,” Rowoon announced as he walked back into the office and placed the food delivery down on the small meeting table in the middle of the room.
Getting up from your desk and discarding your blazer, you smiled brightly. “Thank you!”
“Do you know you only seem to appreciate me when food is around?” he mentioned wryly, loosening off the tie around his neck before unbuttoning his shirt’s cuffs.
“Well, you do have good taste in food. I’ll give you that.”
“I’ll take whatever compliment you’ll give me, Y/N.”
You were midway in dishing out the food when you noticed the way Rowoon rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, exposing his forearms. He seemed unaware of how stuck you were on his arms as he sat down across from you until you still hadn’t moved.
“Y/N?”
“Huh? Oh. Sorry, lost in thought.”
“About my arms?” he mused, and you snapped your gaze up to his eyes.
So, he was aware after all.
“What? No.”
“It’s okay. I found it difficult to speak on the phone earlier to Clare Neutronics with you twirling your hair around your finger absent-mindedly. We’re even.”
“You did? Even with what?”
Rowoon took his eyes off the food momentarily, his brows dipping before he smirked. “The tension between us is evident, Y/N.”
“I agree to a point. I don’t like the tension, but I think you’re construing it as a different type of friction than I view it as.”
“Really? I was certain there was mutual attraction between us.”
You laughed loudly and then paused, your eyes narrowing on the man before you.
Rowoon was undeniably attractive. He was a classic type of handsome, very gentlemanly in appearance. Had you not met as opponents, you probably would have spent more time admiring him than the little you had.
Staring back at you, Rowoon then smiled meekly. “I guess it’s just me then.”
“You’re attracted to me?”
“Do you want to really get into this with me, Y/N? Think about the position we’re in before you ask for further information. If you’re not already aware of it, this could complicate our working environment.”
“We’re fighting for the same role.”
“No, we’re not.”
You gaped at him. “We are! I was going to be promoted to manager, but you came along, the Chairman’s favourite nephew who stole the show!”
“So that’s why you’re bitter towards me. I’ll have you know I’ve worked my way up from the ground to get to here.”
“I know,” you agreed bitterly, sighing heavily. “I’m aware you have some skill.”
Rowoon pursed his lips together. “Some.”
“I admit, we’re slowly getting there together. This wasn’t how I imagined my promotion, though.”
“I guess we just don’t match the same wavelength in multiple areas.”
“You’re throwing out breadcrumbs for me to pick up intentionally now,” you accused, and the way Rowoon gazed at you confirmed it. You huffed with annoyance at your growing curiosity. “Fine, I’ll bite. Tell me the answer to my previous question.”
“It’s hard working with you.”
“I’m intolerable, I can agree.”
Rowoon shook his head. “Not like that, well… I’m not going to go there right now. You asked me to elaborate on attraction. There’s a whole lot of it for you coming from me.”
“Really?”
“I was convinced you felt the same way, which was why we were butting heads. Eventually, we would have had to address that so our working partnership could improve. I guess we avoided that.”
“You sound disappointed.”
“Quite. I’ll have to figure other outlets for the images of workplace misconduct that I’ve thought of.”
Laughing, you watched the man before you as he ate. He had a few mouthfuls before giving up and capturing your gaze with his own. “Are you trying to figure me out?”
“A little.”
“I shouldn’t be satisfied with that,” he replied, lowering his eyes back to his meal. He grew smug. “But I am.”
“I never said I liked you.”
“You’re considering it.”
“I’m trying to figure how you came to that being the answer to our tension.”
“Jaeyoon mentioned…”
“What? What did he say?!”
“Well, he thought that might be the reason for your intolerable ways.”
“So, you admit I’m intolerable.”
Rowoon groaned before chuckling. “There’s no way out of this deep hole, is there?”
“This is the longest conversation we’ve had, you know.”
“I’m aware. I’m enjoying it.”
“I have to admit I am too.”
Sharing a smile, you wondered what this new information would lend to your relationship with Rowoon. On a professional level, you hoped it would break down the barriers between your work ethics.
Though, the idea of figuring out what Rowoon had been imagining had ignited further interest within you.
Maybe you’d find yourselves on the same wavelength eventually.

Beans’ Bagginshield Recs
Here it is! My first rec list eight years since I first started shipping Bagginshield. When this lockdown started (and ended and started again) I found myself re-reading OG/classics and discovering new ones. Sifting through my AO3 history I realized I have read and already forgotten so much fic over the years. For a while, I though the ship had run its course but as we can see now, Bagginshield lives! Check back for updates as I discover (and remember) more fics. Pay attention to the tags and trigger warnings!
AU
I Sang In My Chains Like The Sea by orphan_account for lincesque, IronPanda
In which Bilbo is a Jaeger pilot candidate, and Middle Earth stands on the brink of destruction. (Pacific Rim AU) [Wasn’t sure how this one worked but man it did]
At the Turn of the Year by northerntrash
They say that strange things live in the woods, fair folk and things more spirit than man; don't step between the old oaks, parents mutter to their children, or they might find you, and eat you. Thorin never believed that, but now winter is settling into his bones, the shadows are growing longer through the hoar frost, and he is lost among the trees.
And it was there that Thorin met him, that strange, laughing creature, walking barefoot through the bracken.
Canon-ish
Homeward Bound by perkynurples for 61Below
His life slips away from him on an elven boat carrying him overseas, and there is one last journey Bilbo Baggins must take if he truly means to arrive home.
Sansûkh by determamfidd
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
The Great Shire Conspiracy by Avelera for Emsiecat
Ten years later, Bilbo can't even go to the Green Dragon without a dwarven tourist buying him a beer and sobbing over Bilbo's great tragic love affair with Thorin Oakenshield. Which would all be quite touching and heartbreaking, if not for one little thing...
Dark (generally not a fan but this one made the cut)
Pain-Bearer by lilithiumwords (unfinished)
In an alternate reality, Erebor was never taken by Smaug, and the War of Dwarves and Orcs never happened. The Orcs invaded the Shire, slaughtering hundreds and taking countless more as slaves. Bilbo is slave to Azog, the Dwarf King's mortal enemy... until the Dwarf King rescues him.
Dwarves! in the Shire
Selling to Hobbits by HildyJ
Exiled from his kingdom and living on the mercy of others, Thorin is determined to make his own way in the world for him and his family. And the annual Summer Fair in Hobbiton sounds like the best place to sell enough of his crafted goods to do just that.
Oak and Mistletoe by HildyJ (series)
After a life dominated by a strange form of sickness, Thorin is sent to the Shire to seek a cure only Bilbo Baggins can offer.
Erebor - Nope, Never Fell
A Most Sensible Idea by HildyJ
Bilbo Baggins isn't sure about this. Not one bit.
Frodo is definitely too young to enter into an arranged marriage with a dwarven king called Thorin Oakenshield. It's a good thing that Bilbo is there to chaperone him through their courtship.
After all, there's no chance that a fussy hobbit bachelor would ever catch the eye of a king.
Signs and Meanings by HildyJ
It shouldn't matter to Thorin that the visiting hobbit cook doesn't speak his language. But it does.
Per Aspera by northerntrash
Deep in the dungeons of the Kingdom of Erebor, in an old, unused storeroom, lived a Hobbit.
In which Bilbo Baggins, a strangely successful thief, makes a mistake, and meets a Prince.
Erebor - Rebuilding
Mother-Tongue by northerntrash for HildyJ
Forget-me-not: a small flower, with four petals, which are normally found in shades of blue with a pink or white centre. These are traditional flowers of intent in the Shire, used to express true love, and remembrance.
In which Bilbo plans to leave Erebor, and Thorin tries to understand why.
Previous Engagements by Lunarflare14
After the Battle of Five Armies Thorin and Company have a new task: rebuilding their reclaimed home. Suddenly Bilbo finds himself up to his ears in responsibility and he surprises himself with how well he can navigate negotiations with elf dignitaries, farmers in Dale, and a dwarf king who has patience for neither.
But as Spring approaches a caravan from the Blue mountains brings something everyone had nearly forgotten: the dwarf woman Thorin promised his hand to many years ago.
Which is fine. It's all fine. It wasn't like Bilbo was falling in love with the king or anything.
That would be tragic.
And I'm Your Lionheart by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo lingers in Erebor while Thorin recovers from his wounds, and soon finds himself caught up in politics, romance, and the occasional kidnapping. Ensemble cast. AU. Eventually Thorin/Bilbo.
Fix-Its (Gawd we need them)
An Expected Journey by MarieJacquelyn
For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.

Bilbo wakes, always in Erebor, with dark shadows to one side and the first light of a terrible dawn to the other.

Over Your Shoulder by northerntrash
The battle is over, and the lost have been counted. There is too much death, too much blood, and in the middle of it sits one small Hobbit, left quite alone but for a body on the ground and the memory of what might have been. But he is a tenacious creature, and if there is one thing that he has learnt, it is not to give up hope.
In which Bilbo Baggins goes on one last journey, and doesn't come back alone.
Historical Setting
The Ghost And Mr Baggins by perkynurples
They say that everything can be cured by saltwater - sweat, tears or the sea. Bilbo Baggins chooses the last option, taking his recently orphaned nephew and moving to the charming Oak Cottage, overlooking England’s grislier shores. The house charms him instantly, and though he knows nothing at all about the sea, or about making ends meet on his own so far from everything he’s known his whole life for that matter, he’s quite determined to stay, and see his nephew get better, odd sounds in the night be damned. He’s living in a modern world, after all, and the nonsense he’s been hearing about the house being haunted by its former owner, the mysterious Captain Durin, is just silly superstition… isn’t it?
Hobbit! Thorin
I've Grown a Hedge Around My Heart by pibroch (littleblackdog)
Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his family’s smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood.
It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him.
Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.
Marriage (or something like it)
An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel
As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?
He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.
Something Blue by Lapin
Thorin marries Bilbo after the Battle of Five Armies, a marriage of convenience, not love. Slowly, they must come to make the best of it, Bilbo resolves. After all, he's a Hobbit. They make the best of things.
Magical/Super Powers
On Adventures and Other Forms of Conduct Unbecoming of a Wizard by manic_intent for beingevil
For as long as even the old Gaffer could remember there had been a wizard living in the hill at Bag End, overlooking the Shire. As wizards went, this one wasn't the wandering sort, always out to lure gentle folk out onto nasty adventures, or even the powerful kind, the sort that lived in high towers, reaching out into the ways of the world.
Modern Setting
Old Stone, New Fires by northerntrash
Bilbo was not sure what he had expected when he had agreed to supervise the restoration of Erebor House, on the lonely tidal island in the North sea, but it was not this. The winters up here are cold and harsh, and there is a strange feeling on the air, thick with the brine of the sea and secrets to which he is not privy; there is some part of the long and troubled history of the place that has not been spoken of, a shadow between the broken family gravestones and the caves beneath the cliffs, dark and dangerous.
Perhaps it is all in Bilbo’s mind, but as the nights grow longer, he starts to doubt it, and as Thorin sinks ever deeper into black and incalculable moods, he will have to find what has been lost, before it takes them all.
For This by northerntrash
Thorin Durin had lived in his new flat for approximately eighty four minutes when things started to go terribly, terribly wrong. The wrongness came in the form of a package, delivered to his door, wrapped in brown paper and string, with a small tag wishing him a very sincere welcome to the building.
Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples
Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Love-In-Idleness by perkynurples
Taking Bilbo Baggins, a successful movie actor who is only just getting used to the perks and intricacies of becoming A Face People Want To See, and putting him together with Thorin Oakenshield, with his very traditional (read: slightly backwards) ideas about what constitutes Real Art and Real Talent, might very well be viewed as just some clothead’s idea of a joke. But there are jokes, and then there are carefully calculated risks the size of controversial reproductions of classic Shakespearean plays - for Bilbo, it is the chance of a lifetime to prove himself to all those who have ever deemed him too one-dimensional to even attempt stage, while Thorin has the opportunity to get out of the rut that’s been hindering his career for so long now, and shine in a role worthy of his talent once again. That is if the two learn how to share the same space for more than ten minutes without wanting to tear each other’s hair out. The course of true love never did run smooth, after all…
If There Were Water by stickman
Bilbo Baggins might be in over his head. He’s purchased an old stone house atop a hill overlooking a city he doesn’t know, and plans to live quietly, largely ignoring the rest of the world. But it’s early April, the rainy season, and the roof leaks, and there's something strange about Bywater House that he can't quite figure out.
Thorin Oakenshield is in his fourth month of trying to reconcile his own grief with his failures at anything remotely resembling a competent single parent, living out of a shoebox flat with Fíli (seven, sullen, and stubborn as hell) and Kíli (five, resilient but cracking), working crap jobs and hating everything including himself.
Under the cover of rainy afternoons and sleepless nights, roof repairs and building restoration, Bilbo and Thorin try to figure out how one navigates isolation, and how one breaks out of it. Every step they manage to take forward finds them dragged back again; every question asked has too many answers, or too few. This is a story about living in a world where everyone is on their own, always, and how things go on.
How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us by stickman
Bilbo is a harried 1st year British literature Ph.D. (early 20th century fiction) who happens to have an interest in spatial narrative structures, a lack of time-management skills, and a tiny apartment with a lot of books and very little furniture. He’s stressed, always, and doesn't quite know where he belongs. He tells himself that really, this is, in fact, what he wants to be doing. But sometimes, as much as he loves books, he gets an urge to do something with his hands.
Thorin is a disgruntled M.Arch. 1 in his last year who can’t be arsed to shave and frightens his students, and, frankly, his profs, but his work is top-notch so no one can really say much. They can, however, bully him into running a hands-on design workshop on Saturday mornings, which is complete crap, because he’s used to drinking his Friday nights into oblivion so showing up at Milstein at 7:45 the next morning and trying to teach in a room of wall-to-wall windows as the sun rises is not at the top of his list. Besides, no one ever shows up.
Except one morning, someone does.
The Boy You Met (At The Coin Laundry) by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo accidentally spends a summer in Ireland. One rainy day, Thorin appears in the hotel laundry room, naked and dripping wet and about to propose. (But not, unfortunately, to Bilbo.)
Gandalf, Thranduil, and a handful of Spanish footballers all guest-star.
Hooked On You by Chamelaucium
Thorin should have learnt not to trust his brother and sister by now.
Come with us on holiday, they’d said. It’ll be fun, they’d said. A nice break from work.
Yeah right. All this holiday had brought him was being knocked around the head, acute hay-fever, and the biggest, most ridiculous crush ever on the cute, golden-haired fishing instructor.
One-Sided Conversations by northerntrash
"Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."
The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.
“One”/Soulmates
you lick your lips (you taste like years of being alone) by perkynurples for stopchasingflowers
Thorin Oakenshield was born without the longing, and has spent his whole life merely observing others as they pursued a feeling unknown to him until they finally found their One. He has made his peace with the prospect of being alone, and has been faring well enough, but little does he know the fates have a different story in store for him.
Things We Grow Together by serenbach
Dwarves are born with a bone-deep knowledge of their One, but Thorin stops feeling the pull of his after the dragon attacks Erebor. Needless to say, he is surprised, and not initially pleased, to find his One living behind a round green door decades later.
Hobbits find a seed that represents their innermost self and can offer it to someone else to plant. This creates a bond as strong as deep roots in the earth between them. It is just like Bilbo, after years of thinking that no one would want his, to offer his soul-seed to a dwarf that does not understand gardening metaphors.
But just because they have found each other does not make the quest to reclaim Erebor any easier, and in the end a sacrifice is still made.
Thorin has to trust in the strength of the bond between himself and his One, because otherwise he will never believe that the sacrifice was worth it.
Colour-struck by northerntrash
Soul mates are like adventures, Bilbo had often consoled himself. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things that made you late for dinner. It was no great hardship that he had never met his, even if he couldn't tell which of his petunias were blue and which were purple.
Quest-ions
Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel
The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves.
Thorin Oakenshield's Majestic Diary by Fruitsie
Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain and Totally Majestic Badass of Middle Earth, does not have a raging hard-on for Bilbo Baggins.
No, seriously.
Just read his diary.
Call You Home by northerntrash
In which the Company are entirely too nosy about matters that are supposed to be a secret, and Bilbo learns that being concerned about propriety is overrated when you could be making friends instead.

The Adoption - Meeting A New Friend
Words: 4623
Summary: This is the story version of how the adoption process went from start to end with @adventures-on-foster-island ! Thanks again!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was unsettling to settle back in to say the least.
Going from constantly traveling to sitting at home everyday was a change neither me or my pokemon were very happy about at first. Of course, I had discussed it with them before I made the decision to come home, and of course, it was great to see my family and friends again after that year away, but it was also... slower. More controlled. Less exciting in a way that constantly being surrounded by the unexpected does to you. In my little rented appartment in Rota, there were no wild pokemon that would steal my lunches, no random trainers that would challenge me as soon as our eyes met. There were no mad dashes to outrun rain clouds and no seeking shelter with wild pokemon... everything was peaceful. Everything was safe.
Luckily, it never became boring. In my first couple of days back, just as I was taking a stroll around town to see what had changed and to greet the merchants and shopkeepers I grew up around, Miss Chiba from the bakery offered me a job. The best kind of coincidence, right? During my journey I had garnered many different recipes and tips and tricks to make different pasteries, so of course I happily agreed. Eevee was over the moon when I told them the news and insisted on keeping me company during my working hours... totally not because they had a sweet tooth and were banking on getting all the left-overs and taste tests they would likely be gifted if they hung around the kitchen all day...
Okay, so maybe I had spoiled Eevee too much on our time on the road. Nothing wrong with that.
To my surprise, Riolu declined the invitation to come along with us, even if she was as much a sweets lover as Eevee. Instead, she wanted to keep training and keep honing her powers so she could be ready for when I would inevitably go on another journey again. It was sweet, so I let her, with the promise that she came by during lunch break so we could all eat together and hear about her process.
And that's how my days back home went from then on. Eevee and I would see Riolu to the city wall and wave her goodbye as she headed towards the small forest where she liked to train, and then Eevee and I were off to the bakery. It was a nice change of pace for a while. Homey. Safe. But after a couple of weeks I started to get this weird, empty feeling. Like something was missing. Incomplete.
Whether it was because of my former partner Squirtle, who had left the team at the end of my journey through Kanto to be with a group of wild Squirtle that wanted him to be their leader and protector; or because my apartment was a little small (even if it beat my little tent by a mile) and I felt constricted somehow... I don't know. But the short version of it was that I wanted to change things up a little. I couldn't go on another journey. Not yet. Only a couple more weeks and I had enough money for that. However, a friend recommended me something else. Something better.
Adopt a pokemon.
To be honest, I was a little skeptical of it at first, since I didn't know if I was capable of caring for a pokemon that could possibly have bad memories with people, but I still wanted to give it a chance. I wouldn't be a very good trainer if I wouldn't.
It was on one of my days off, and Eevee and I persuaded Riolu to take a rest day too, so we could all walk towards the closest pokemon centre together. There, I made a call. It was to Ellisa, former pokemon researcher and head caregiver of Foster Island, an island facility dedicated to saving and caring for neglected, abandoned, or abused pokemon. Of course, there were multiple ways to adopt a pokemon, but my friend had been really adamant about this place. I could hardly argue against it, especially when she showed me one of the pokemon she had adopted from the place. It was a little cutie, so precious, but still a bit wary of other trainers. It totally convinced me. It would take a while to travel there once I had chosen a date to look at the pokemon for adoption, but at least this saved me from doing hours of research and chickening out. All in all, it was a great way to adopt a new friend.
Anyway, I called Ellisa and after a short trading of names and giving introductions, I told Ellisa my story and told her a bit about what I did in daily life nowadays. It wasn't much to go on honestly, so I was pleasantly surprised when after about two hours, Ellisa called me back to say she had a few candidates that would like to meet me! I was so excited and immediately scheduled a day I would come by. The days that followed where filled with daydreaming and planning my short trip overseas, but I was so looking forward to it that time flew by in no time!
~*~
And now I sit here, on the deck of a ship that is taking me, Riolu and Eevee towards Foster Island. Finally! I'm a little nervous if I have to be honest, but I think the knot in my stomach belongs to the good kind of nerves. The jittery, excited kind.
"Eievui!" Little brown paws clamber across my leg. Eevee smugly sits themselves on my lap and strains their neck to look over the railing of the ship.
"Be careful," I say to them, gently placing a hand against their belly to keep them from falling off. Eevee just wiggles a little on my lap, but keeps watching the water pokemon before us. Seels skirt across the water's surface, while magikarps and tympoles occasionally spring from the water in high arcs before they dissappear under the waves again. Everytime the latter happens, Eevee squals in glee, never failing to point out that there was a water pokemon there, did you see that?!
Or at least, I think they say that. I could be wrong.
I softly pat Eevee's head as they keep watching the waves and I slowly turn to meet Riolu's gaze. She stands next to the door that leads inside the boat. Ever since I received her, she has always been the 'cool' type of pokemon. Crosses her arms, stands slightly back and leans against the wall of the ship so you can't see the happy sparkle in her eyes - the whole deal. It only makes her cuter honestly. I'm carefull not to break her bubble though. She once tried to tell me that she did it because she felt like she was the protector of our little family. So cute.
She believes that for that she always has to stay back and keep watch. Keep us safe.
And she does. She really does keep us safe, both during our journey and now that we are on a trip to find a new friend. I just hope she can let her guard down a little when we meet them so there's no hostility or anything from the start. I've been told Riolu's cold demeaner scares off some pokemon, but I'm sure that won't be the case now. To be sure, I ask with my eyes if she's doing alright. She simply nods back.
Okay, so she is just as nervous as I am, I'm glad.
After a period of watching the waves and listening to the soft chitter from Eevee, the boat finally moors on Foster Island, an assistent already waiting for me there. She gives me a soft smile and brings me along to the care facility further down the coast. I'm no connoiseur on architecture, but the building just screamed safe and open to me as soon as I saw it. A lot of glass, a lot of white, happy paintings of happy pokemon on banners at both sides of the entrance. Just as we enter the building, I let Eevee down from where I kept them against my chest. I saw a small playground just to my left. They always love those.
"Come back when I call, 'kay?" I yell at their retreating form.
"Vuivui!"
...I'll search for them when the time comes.
The assistent leads me and Riolu further into the building untill we arrive at a large room, one wall completely made of glass so everyone can see the small garden on the other side. From where I enter I can already see a couple of Bidoof chasing each other in a friendly game of tag, while a Pachirisu and Buneary are peeking out from behind a bush and watch them with interest. It warms my heart to see them so carefree. Who knows what they have had to endure to come here?
"You may take a seat here," the assistent says and gestures around at the various sofa's and beanbags, "Ellisa will meet you shortly. Please make yourself comfortable."
"Thank you-" The assistent is already gone. Well. Okay.
I sit down on one particularly soft-looking beanbag and almost drown it, before righting myself. Hopefully nobody was watching the security cameras; that was akward. Next to me, Riolu snickers. I have the urge to respond sarcastically, but... well, it was kind of funny. I laugh with her.
The floor of this room is a soft carpet, pastel colored circles spread across it that makes the place look happy and safe. A perfect place to play. I'm almost tempted to throw off my shoes and let my feet rest on the soft carpet, but I decid that it would probably be best not to do that in a public space.
Riolu and I watch the pokemon behind the glass play and relax, untill a door to my right opens.
"Sky?"
"Yes, that's me."
Ellisa steps inside the room and holds out her hand. I shake it.
"It's nice to finally meet you in person," Ellisa says.
"Likewise." I smile at her, but soon my eye catches movement behind her. A small Bidoof appears from behind her legs. It's body is smaller than the Bidoof I had seen in the garden and it's teeth are far more white. Like they have been cleaned far more recently. Or are newly grown. I hope it's not the latter.
Ellisa notices my gaze and smiles softly at Bidoof. "This is Bidoof," she introduces it, "This one came to us with overgrown front teeth, as her trainer left her in a crate with nothing to chew most of the time. Her mouth has fully recovered, as you can see, as well as her fighting spirit." She came a little closer to me to whisper, "She does still have claustrophobia however, so avoid putting her in any kind of container or very small room if you choose her."
As soon as I hear that I can feel my heart break a little. That must have been horrible. No wonder even now, Bidoof seems skittish around me. It wouldn't be easy to open yourself up to new people after experiencing something like that.
"It is nice to meet you Bidoof," I say and crouch down in front of her. I want to pet her, but decide against it. Instead I give her my brightest smile. "I'm glad you're doing alright now."
Bidoof cautiously shuffles from behind Ellisa's legs and approaches me. She's just precious. When she's close enough, Bidoof dips her head down a little.
Ah, I understand.
"May I?"
"Bi-bi."
I reach out with my hand and slowly, gently cart my fingers through her fur. It is incredibly soft. Bidoof croons quietly.
"This is going to be impossible..." I murmur to myself. How will I ever choose? I stand up again, to the slight disappointment of Bidoof. Ellisa just smiles and nods at an assistent that just entered the room with a pokemon in their arms. It's a Lotad, but with a small, pale purple water lilly on it's lilly pad. It's so cute!
"This is Lotad," Ellisa says, and thanks the assistent as she takes Lotad in her own arms, "This is the sweetest little guy in our garden pool. We assume that he was abandoned before the flower bloomed, and the trainer thought he was sick when he saw the bud growing... He's pretty cold resistant, and finds it too hot here on the island. He said he'd like to travel again soon."
I smile at Lotad, who shyly turns his gaze away. I can't imagine anyone leaving him just for his looks. It almost makes me mad, but I manage to keep my smile as I nod at Lotad. "You look beautiful Lotad, anyone thinking otherwise cannot see what is right in front of them."
The water type shifts a little in Ellisa's arms, but I can see it preens at the compliment. Good.
A soft knock on the open door alerts me to the next arrival. A Skarmory stands in the doorway, it's expression closed off and cold. Scars litter it's body that resemble the silhouettes of dead trees, as if his body is still in the hold of their branches and never managed to escape them. It saddens my heart. Skarmory must notice my expression, because as he steps further into the room, he grumbles and turns his head away from me.
Ellisa starts with the introduction as if there has not already happened an akward exchange between us.
"This is Skarmory. He was rescued from a poaching operation about a year ago, and had been badly electrocuted multiple times there. Although he is all healed, his scars never disappeared..." Skarmory shifts on his legs, but keeps his eyes on the ground. "I know he may look intimidating-"
May look intimidating? He practically already rejected me after our eyes met for only a second!
"-but I swear that it's quite on the contrary. Skarmory here has the largest heart of any of the pokemon here and will put himself in danger if that means he can help those he cares about."
I swallow through the rejection and tug my lips back up in a smile. "It is nice to meet you, Skarmory." My voice gets stuck in my throat. What else can I say to him? He even refuses to look me in the eye...
No doubt picking up on my unease, Riolu steps forward and quietly growls something at Skarmory. The steel and flying type does look up from that, but his expression is anything but friendly. Before Riolu can get closer and possibly start a fight, I step in between the two hard heads.
"Be nice, you two. This is just an introduction session, no time for a battle." I look at Riolu and raise an eyebrow. Riolu huffs, but stands back. My arms drop back to my sides. "Good."
I turn to Ellisa, who is placing Lotad on the ground. She pulls a spray bottle from... somewhere, and softly sprays his lilly pad. Then as she stands up, she smiles at all three of the adoption pokemon now present.
"These are the pokemon that were the most insistent on meeting with you, Sky," she says. I can't help but be a little surprised by that and try to catch Skarmory's eyes, but he has his head down again. "You have about the next hour or so to get to know them and play a little with them. I will come back when it's time to say goodbye or for you to make a choice. You may choose if you want to stay inside or if you want to go into the garden, that's up to you. I hope you will all have a good time." After saying her goodbyes to the pokemon, she leaves us alone.
It is quiet for a second, but I decide to take the lead and break the silence. I clasp my hands together.
"Alright! What about you three give us a tour of the garden? I would like to see all your favorite spots. Does that sound like a plan?"
"Bi-bi!" Bidoof happily makes his way to the door, and Lotad and a hesitant Skarmory follow her. I take Riolu's paw and follow behind them. Hopefully, all will work out now.
~*~
The garden truly is a special place. There's something for every kind of pokemon — a small patch of ice in the corner for pokemon who want to cool down after playing, a sandy part for pokemon to sunbathe in. A small pool is surrounded by low grass hills, and trees and bushes provide cover from the sun that shines down from between the walls of the facility. Patches of flowers are scattered across the grass, and I think I even saw some holes that were no doubt dug out by pokemon to create makeshift tunnels underground.
And really all sorts of pokemon live here. When Bidoof showed me her favorite hiding place between a circle of small, blue berrie bushes, I spotted an Aromatisse and a Goomy hiding there as well. When Lotad showed me how he liked to drift in the pool and play with the other water types, I saw a Helioptile just off the side recharching in the sun, while a Ledian quietly zoomed by. The garden was almost filled to the brim with different kinds of pokemon, but it seemed that everyone had found their own little places and spots. It warmed my heart to see it.
During the tour outside, Riolu had stood back, leaning next to the glass door we entered from with her arms crossed. Skarmory had stayed back as well, but at the other side of the door, still visibly avoiding getting too close to any of us. Secretly, I hoped that they would be able to gain an understanding during their quiet brooding, so I let them to themselves.
Besides, I had already enough to do just following the increasingly enthusiastic Lotad and Bidoof around. Halfway through our walk through the garden, a caregiver brought Eevee to the garden and, instantly, a friendship bloomed between them and the adoption pokemon. From that moment on, I let myself fall down in the grass and told them to go on playing. I needed a break.
~*~
Now, I sluggishly blink my eyes open as I feel a soft prodding against my cheek. "Wha-" I yawn. My eyes adjust to the sunlight and begin to focus. Riolu is kneeling beside me, poking my cheek and softly calling my name.
"Rio... Rio."
I wipe away some drool and lift myself from the ground with one arm. "I'm awake, I'm awake."
Riolu sits back on her knees. "Riolu-ri, Rio."
"I know, I know," I say, "but I was too comfortable to resist it." I rub my eyes and look around. I'm still in the garden of the Foster Island's adoption facility, but... there are no pokemon anywhere nearby.
A low growl startles me. I look to my left, where Skarmory is standing. He's looking straight at me, but I can't figure out what his expression means. Is he mad? Irritated?
"Ah, you're awake." The door to the garden opens and Ellisa steps inside. She smiles knowingly. "I was just about to announce that your time is up for today, since we have another appointment in half an hour. I have to say though... this has been the most unusual getting-to-know session I have seen in a while."
I feel heat rise to my cheeks. I hastily push myself from the ground and wipe away some grass blades from my clothes and hair. "I'm so sorry!" I exclaim, "I hadn't meant to fall asleep! I'm sorry I scared everyone away..." I look around. Was that a Pachirisu I saw ducking behind a bush? Oh no, I really scared them...
Ellisa laughs.
...Huh?
"Oh, quite on the contrary," Ellisa assures me, "the pokemon were all so curious to come closer. Most of them have never seen a human so unguarded around them before. When some of them began to climb on top of you however... Skarmory and Riolu stepped in and chased them away. Together, might I add." A glint in her eye. "They make quite the team."
Oh.
I look at Riolu, then Skarmory. Skarmory averts his gaze. I still smile at him. "Well, thank you then. For saving me," I say.
Skarmory grunts quietly.
"Lu-rio," Riolu adds. She sounds approving, almost proud.
Guess the choice is already made for one of us.
"And... where is Eevee?" I turn back to Ellisa, who nods at a collection of trees just off the side. I carefully approach the trees and when I hold away a couple of branches, I am pleasantly surprised. There, right between the trees, are Lotad, Eevee and Bidoof, quietly nibbling on some red berries. The leafs russle as I move them and Eevee looks up from her meal at the sound.
"Eievui!" They bounce from their spot, right into my arms. I almost drop them, but quickly adjust.
"Hi there. I see you entertained yourself just fine?"
"Eievui-vui!"
"I'm glad."
I look at Lotad and Bidoof. "And I'm sorry, but Ellisa told me my time's up for now. I hope you can forgive me for falling asleep when we had only so little time to get to know each other."
"Tad."
"Bidoof."
They both nod and follow me from inbetween the trees back to where Ellisa, Riolu and Skarmory are waiting for us. I bring Eevee along in my arms.
"In some adoption cases, I advice the trainers to come back for a second time, either when they're still not sure who to choose or if I think the pokemon haven't accepted them yet," Ellisa says.
I nod, already planning another date in my mind I could get free to come over once more.
"...However," Ellisa says and I look up in surprise, "I would say that in this instance a second appointment is not really necessary, is it?" She looks at the adoption pokemon. "I saw the way they interacted with you and I must say they haven't been this expressive and... happy in a while. I am sure any of them would be ecstatic if you were to adopt them."
My mouth is agape, I know it, but I can't help it. All three of them... like me? I let my eyes drift over them and they all look back with the pokemon-equivalent of smiles.
The choice had been hard, but even I cannot deny that I already feel which of them would fit my little family the best. Even if I was not awake to experience it, I know it when I look at them. I know it when I look at Riolu.
They would be the perfect fit.
I slowly breathe in through my nose, out of my mouth. This is it.
"I... I think you're right," I say carefully, paying attention to each of the adoption pokemon responses. Bidoof stares at me with sparkling eyes, Lotad's flower spreads even wider open and even Skarmory chances a glance at me, but quickly looks the other way.
Ellisa nods. "Then please, say your choice and be sure to give your goodbyes to the others. I will be waiting for you inside." Ellisa then turns around and leaves me along with my pokemon and the others. I sigh and crouch in front of the three pokemon anxiously awaiting my words.
"You would all be amazing fits to my team, I can feel that. And this wasn't an easy choice, so please, know that whatever I choose here, some trainer will come by that will pick you too, alright? No feeling down about it, because your time will come. I know it." I swallow before I continue. "...but I think I have chosen already."
I shift a little to look at each of them, my eyes landing and staying on the last of the three, who, for the first time this afternoon, actually looks back.
"I hope I can earn your trust, Skarmory, because you already have mine. Will you accept becoming a part of my team?"
I see the exact moment the implications of the words settle in, because small beads start the form at the corners of Skarmory's eyes. He closes them, then opens them and says, "Skar-skarmory." It sounds unsure, but hopeful.
"I take that as a yes." I smile at him. "I think you will be a perfect fit. Thank you for accepting my offer."
I look at the other two. "You are wonderful, the both of you. As I said, your moment will come, I am sure of it. Please stay safe here untill that time comes, alright?"
"Tad-tad."
"Bi-bi."
I nod at them. "May we meet again then. Goodbye for now." I give one last pat on each of their heads and turn around, heading back inside with Eevee in my arms, Riolu and Skarmory right behind me. It already feels right. It's as if this formation is how it was always supposed to be.
My smile widens.
Ellisa meets me and my pokemon in the lobby. Her eyes turn soft at the sight of Skarmory flanking on my left and Riolu on my right.
"A great choice. Do you believe me now, Skarmory? I always told you someone would see past your scars."
Ellisa leads me and my pokemon to her office and helps me in arranging the adoption. I first have to catch Skarmory to register him to my trainer ID, so Ellisa hands me a great ball. I try to refuse and use one of my own normal balls, but she insists that this comes with every adoption on Foster Island.
As long as Riolu doesn't get jealous that Skarmory gets a great ball, alright then.
I hold the ball in front of me and Skarmory steps formard and touches the button with the tip of his wing. A light engulfes him and shake, shake, shake, I caught him! I quickly release him again so he can watch me sign all the documents and papers in order to make the rest of the adoption official. Because Ellisa needs to explain more than one of the documents to me in detail, my pokemon quickly lose interest and Eevee jumps from my lap to join Riolu and Skarmory in a simple ball game on the other side of the office. I try not to be distracted too much, but... let's just say Ellisa has to explain some forms at least twice before I get it.
When all that is done, Ellisa and I set a date for Skarmory's six-month check-up and yearly physicals. Just before our meeting will come to an end, Ellisa gives me a large list of care tips in how to make sure Skarmory will be alright. It's long, but I know I'll need it. I take multiple pictures of the list, fold it and stuff it into my backpack.
After finishing up the lasts formalities, finally, Ellisa stands from behind her desk and extends her hand to me.
"I hope you and Skarmory will grow closer and closer and become the best of partners!"
I smile at her and then at Skarmory, who briefly stops to look at me too before he kicks the ball to Eevee. There is an understanding there. A promise.
"I think we will," I say, "I'll make sure of it."
, LITERALLY WHO LOOKS AT NICK FUCKING RUSSEL AND GOES “mm yes, take my autism”
THIS IS AN ISSUE
WHY AM I LIKE THIS
whatever its too late now! you get to hear me talk about it to avoid writing it!!
So, i’ll be explaining the show for you newbs who dont watch power rangers like a smart person (as in the not watching it is smart).
Power Rangers Mystic Force is, obviously, power rangers. It’s got the standard team of five with superpowers and weird biker-looking uniforms.
If im honest, PRMF is literally just power rangers but with like fantasy magic.
It follows Nick Russell, the new guy in town. He’s a biker and he’s got this tragic bs backstory about how his parents abandoned him (update: they work overseas, they adopted him and like do not vibe with him)  and he travels, living with  family members and how he never sticks around long enough to make friends. We know he’s staying with his sister, and about nothing else. ~ Nick Russell is actually really important, of course, he is the Red Ranger and if we didn’t have the leader be angsty what kind of Power Rangers would we be, am I right? (i dunno i havent watched other power rangers in like ten years) ~
But we’ll come back to that. ~
There’s also Charlie “Chip” Thorn, a hyperactive hyperimaginative redhead with a love for fantasy and superheroes. He’s eager to join the team and loves the idea of quests and fighting villains and shit. He’s the Yellow Ranger, with Lightning Powers. ~
Vida Rocca, the ‘bad girl’. She has this one strip of her short hair that she dyes and may I just say when I finished the show a third time I couldnt not think ‘yO HER HAIR CHANGES TO SHOW HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT THE RANGERS’ but lets be honest thats probably bs lol. Anyways, she’s a DJ and she loves music, she’s the Pink Ranger (who hates pink for most of the show) with Wind Powers. ~
Madison Rocca, the ‘good girl’. She’s Vida’s sister, and she like following the rules and she enjoys recording her friends to make little videos for them to look back on when theyre older. She’s hesitant and cautious, but will do a lot to make sure her sister is safe. She’s the Blue Ranger, with the power of Water. ~
Xander Bly, he’s cocky and thinks hes all that, and flirts with women like every chance he gets. He thinks he’s super handsome and amazing and probably has a superiority complex for one reason or another. He’s the green ranger, with Nature Powers. ~
Not rangers include: ~
Koragg, one of the big bads who (SPOILERS) later turns out to be Nick’s father and Udonna’s long lost husband. Early on in the show he can telepathically communicate with Nick, which gives Nick these really really bad headaches, great for angst, it’s used as a bit of a plot device through a lot of the show and ngl I love it cause angst. ~
Uhh forgot her name but there’s the Vampire Queen who has bat wings on her hips and is in a full leather body suit. She’s kinda boring. ~
I forgot her name as well but the Vampire Queens daughter, who later goes on to save her mother because she realizes that the Rangers are the good guys and she’s on the wrong team.  ~
Udonna, the kinda ex White Ranger and a very powerful sorceress, as well as the Ranger’s trainer and Claire’s aunt. ~
Claire, (SPOILERS) who turns out to be the Daughter of Udonna’s sister, who was more powerful than her and sacrificed her life to seal the gate to what is essentially hell. She’s comedically bad at magic early in the show, and acts a lot like a comedic relief. ~
The Master, aka The Big Bad that the evil guys are trying to let free. Koragg before he became Koragg was trying to kill him and succeeded in trapping him further than all the others. He’s some weird tentical creepy muscles-showing no skinned weird i dunno i think i repressed this cause i forgot what he looks like lol.
Alright, so those are the characters. Now let me explain the plot.
Nick rides into town on his bike and is usually found set up outside the record shop that the rest of the Rangers (yet to be) work at. Btw, theyre all teenagers, but I think this takes place in summer cause we never see them go to school.
Anyways, this old man calls for somebody to help him, and says that his brother and him were walking through the woods and somebody grabbed him, and he needed somebody to go looking for his brother. Nick, not being apart of the town to know they have rumours about dying in the forest, offers to help.
Xander tells him the woods are haunted, he ignores the man saying the man needs help so who gives a shit about some rumours, and then Vida is like “i’ll help too,” and Chip joins in cause he thinks its gonna be some awesome quest. They make it out to the forest, and Maddie and Xander join them, (”Xander I told you if you ever took my car I’d rearrange your limbs!” -Vida, episode one).
The man is like super ominous and her vanishes once they get into the forest, this creepy witch lady saves them from some bad guys attempting to attack them, and then throws brooms at them that they fly off on.
Time skip not actually in the show but im losing steam so we’re moving on. Eventually, they make it to RootCore, aka the base of operations, and meet Udonna and Claire. Udonna is this super powerful sorceress and the White Ranger, and she trains them. Claire is her apprentice who is comedically bad at magic.
She hands out wands to them, they go to leave, get into a fight, all of them but Nick believe in and use magic, Nick leaves the forest, Udonna fights Koragg and loses her staff aka her White Ranger magic, and the Rangers are left in charge of saving everybody. In the end, Nick goes to leave and ends up showing up anyways to save the rangers from Koragg and embraces the magic, becoming the Red Ranger.
That’s the gist of the first episode, and the rest is kinda just “fight the bad guys, discover random secrets that make a surprising amount of sense for a show like this, fail a couple times, do some weird shit then end on a happy note”
WHICH BTW THE ENDING? FUCKIN WEIRD
The fantasy creatures integrate with Humans, Vida dyes all her hair bright pink, Nick fucking leaves town and this is the weird part. Because for one, Nick wanted to stay with his friends it was obvious, but for two; the way he left was w e i r d . He, Udonna and not-evil-Koragg who I forgot the name of, leave together.
The end scene is Nick riding up to the edge of the rode on his Motorcycle, then it slowly pans out to show Udonna and Nek (im just calling him Nek as in not evil koragg now) on bikes as well?? one of them asks if hes ready to go and they ~ride off into the sunset~
For one: THESE ARE AGE OLD SORCERERS WHO HAVE VERY LITTLE IDEA ABOUT HUMAN TECH?? HOW DO THEY KNOW HOW TO RIDE??
For two: dID THEY JUST HAVE THESE BIKES RIDING AROUND?? AND THE HELMETS?? DID THEY SHELL OUT A BUNCH OF MONEY FOR THIS?? LITERALLY WHAT???
anyways, great show! youve gotta watch it on some.. less than legal sites but shh its okay shhhh. It used to be on Netflix but like yaknow, its gone now. Either way, it’s a great show in my opinion! Like I mean it’s bad cause Power Rangers, so to most who are looking to critique there’s probably shit acting, and there’s a lot of not needed grunting in battle, the effects are shitty and the costumes are kinda depressing, but it’s still enjoyable!
Random Facts-- ~
Vida hates Pink, despite being the pink ranger. ~
Chip, Vida, and Maddie have been friends since either kindergarten or elementary school, i dunno about Xander. ~
They all work at a Record Shop/Music Shop together, and their boss is an idiot but kinda entertaining. ~
Vida turns into a vampire for about two episodes, and Chip is the one to figure it out. ~
Maddie gets turned to stone because Nick essentially calls her useless and shy, and so she went out to prove otherwise, and got caught up in an attack. ~
Chip opens a weird black bottle he found after a battle and some weird thing comes out and attacks him, he spends the B Plot of that episode quite literally dying with his soul being eaten and climbing a mountain to get the cure. ~
Koragg has a really dumb moral code about how he only fights with Honor and refuses to kill the rangers most of the time because its “not honorable” for some reason or another. ~
There’s an episode where Xander gets this really really ugly and big zit right on the tip of his nose, and he uses this perfection potion Claire made for plants. He proceeds to turn into a literal tree and be depressed. ~
There’s a Troblin, the child of a Troll and a Goblin, named Phineas who’s very entertaining and I like this. By the end of the show, he ends up dating the daughter of the Vampire Queen which when you think too hard about makes no sense. ~
Nick turns into Koragg at one point late in the series. I completely fucking forgot how, but he does lol.
    Amber rummages around, pulling her knives and her whetstone out of her bag. “So.”
“So.” Thom stared at her, dark eyes shining.
“What do you want from me? And stop staring, it’s creepy.”
“What do I want? Amber, I thought you would’ve figured it out by now. I’ve only been following you, trying to talk to you, for the past month.”
“Yes, I noticed and was thoroughly creeped out.” Amber scraped her stone against her blade, and an irritating scraping sound emanated through the room. “The only reason I let you talk to me right now is because I was bored of trying to lose you. Now stop with the guessing game and just tell me why you’re here.”
Thom threw his hands up exasperatedly. “I want your help! You’re one of the best fighters out there, and you have personal ties with Havoc themself. I need your help to save this country!”
“Oh?” Amber tilted her head slightly.
“I’m on an important quest to stop the Dark Army from taking complete control and reigning supreme over this country. They already control the West, the South, and the Northeast; the East Coast is really all that stands between them and total dictatorship. I believe I can stop them and keep the island free, but I can’t do it alone. Will you come with me? It’ll be a long and arduous journey, but you’ll be paid extremely well when the job is done, and then you can go right back to your own quest.”
“What else is in it for me?” Amber asked skeptically.
“What - what else? I just told you, you’d save the world, be known as a beloved hero across the land, and get paid for it, that’s what you get. What else could you want?”
“It’s just, I’m a little busy right now, you know? I’m not sure if this is worth my time.”
Thom looked bewildered. “Worth your time? The fate of the world is at stake! You don’t get to be busy, this is destiny at work!”
“Hmm. Fine.”
“You’ll help me?” Thom lit up.
“Ha. No.” She sat back and chuckled. “No, I don’t help creeps. I just thought it’d be amusing to lead you on.”
“No? Come on! You can’t say no, the world is at stake! What will it take to convince you? My mother’s a wealthy merchant, I’ll pay you handsomely.”
“Oooh, he’ll pay me handsomely, huh? Funny, I thought I was pretty handsome on my own.” Amber shrugged and continued idly sharpening.
“You - well, I wouldn’t call you ‘handsome’, but you are attractive, I have to agree-”
“I didn’t ask. Shut up.”
“Don’t tell me to shut up!” Thom said indignantly. “I am the hero of this realm, and I’m offering you the chance to become a hero too! You should be thanking me!”
“I’ll tell any asshole to shut up if they deserve it, I’ll thank you as soon as you’ve done me a favor, and you’re no hero of mine. No means no. I don’t need to be a hero. I have a job of my own to do.” Amber tested the edge of the blade with her thumb, apparently judged it sharp enough, and pulled out a different knife.
Visibly trying out a different tactic, Thom picked up the finished blade and tested it against his own thumb. “This is a good dagger. Did you choose it yourself? The craftsman must have been very good at his job.”
“No, I slayed a great spider-beast and upon slitting its throat, that knife dropped out into my open palm, which is how I knew I was blessed by the gods.” Amber deadpanned.
“Ah, yes, the trial of the spider beast!” Thom’s eyes lit up. “You are indeed blessed, I had no idea I was in the presence of such an accomplished warrior!”
“Don’t bullshit me. I was being sarcastic. My girlfriend made it for me. Give it back.” Amber didn’t wait for him to hand it over, electing to snatch it away instead.
“Oh! I didn’t realize you travelled with any friends. Where is she? I imagine any friend of yours must be just as lovely as you are.” Thom twisted around to look at the door, as if Keira was about to walk through at that second.
“You’re Western, aren’t you.”
“Yes, how did you know?”
“Never mind.”
The two sat in silence for a moment, Amber casually carrying on with her sharpening, Thom looking around the room for another way to continue the conversation.
“So, what friends do you have, then? You must have allies. Tell me about Havoc!” Thom asked, sounding just a little bit desperate.
“My friends are none of your business. And I imagine what little you do know about Havoc is too much, in their opinion. They prefer the mystique, if you didn’t know.”
Thom blinked. “Well, I - I did know that, but -”
“But you thought I’d go behind their back and spill everything I know about them to you, a stranger I just met who’s been tracking me for the past two months? I think not. Obvious threat of them having me murdered in cold blood the instant I let a secret of theirs pass my lips aside, I don’t betray my friends. To anyone. But especially not to creepy strangers like you.”
Thom sat forward interestedly. “So you just go around with the possibility of them killing you whenever they feel like it hanging over your head? Seems like a pretty one-way friendship, if you ask me. If you came with me, you wouldn’t have to worry about it. I could protect you.”
Amber snorted. “You wish. They’d mow you down faster than you could yell my name in warning. Anyway, just because they’d kill me if I told someone else their personal details, doesn’t mean that they’re not incredibly helpful to me when I need it. We’re business partners, and it’s a hazard of the job.” Amber very pointedly did not include the more personal side of her friendship, and that Havoc was significantly more likely to kill the person who’d heard the detail, rather than she who told it. (At that, she wondered if she could get this asshole out of her hair by telling him some harmless secret. Havoc would have him dead within the week. . . but no, she didn’t want to inconvenience them. If Thom got too annoying, she’d just lead him into the forest and kill him herself.)
Thom did not know how to respond to that.
“So how long until you get out of my hair? My answer isn’t gonna change, you know.”
Thom, looking defeated, stood up slowly. “I hope you reconsider, milady. The world could use you as their hero.”
“I’m not your lady, or a hero. Get out.” Amber flipped the knife she was sharpening, and stared him down. Thom scrambled out the door, and slammed it firmly shut behind him.
The next day, Amber went down for breakfast, but Thom was still there, this time accompanied by a short-haired blond woman in leather armor. Unlike the previous night, when Thom had arrived unarmed, both warriors had swords strapped to their belts - Thom with a large double-handed thing, and the woman with a black shortsword so short it could have been mistaken as a large everyday butcher knife had the handle been crafted slightly different. Thom perked up when he saw Amber enter the room, and he said something to his companion; she scowled, but nodded, and he bounded across the room.
“Amber! Good morning! Have you thought about my offer any more, now you’ve slept on it a bit?” He smiled brightly, as if he was trying to radiate charm from his pores.
“I didn’t, because why would I when I already answered you and considered the matter ended,” Amber said flatly.
At that, the blond woman swished up behind Thom, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “Hello, Amber. My name’s Sam. I heard you were indecisive, and I hoped-”
“Not to be rude, but I’m just going to stop you there. I’m not indecisive. I don’t want to go with you at all. I have my own business to attend to.”
Sam deflated. “Are you sure? We could really use you, you know. I’ve heard so much about you and your accomplishments.”
Amber shrugged. “It wasn’t that great. I had a lot of help, from people who most definitely would not want to work with you.”
Sam stepped closer, and nudged Thom out of the way. He peeled away for the bar, interpreting that it might be easier to have someone else try to convince Amber. He was wrong, but Amber didn’t mind the alone time with the woman - she was pretty, and seemed nice.
“Do you mind me asking what you’re trying to do, Amber? What’s so important that the entire country can wait?”
“My girlfriend got kidnapped. I’m saving her,” Amber said simply.
“Oh! I’m sorry to hear that. Maybe if you came with us, we could help you on the way to our own fight.” Sam sounded sympathetic.
“Look, I know it’s not what you want to hear, but I don’t work with people I don’t know, and I don’t need any more help. I’m good where I am. I appreciate the offer, though - your boy over there expected me to be on my knees thanking him for giving me a chance, after he offered me nothing but gold and renown.” Amber nodded towards the bar, where Thom had struck up a drinking competition with five other men, and a dozen other people had circled around them urging them to drink! drink! drink!
Sam rolled her eyes. “Yeah, he’s a little bit full of himself like that. But he’s got a great heart, I promise. He’d help you in an instant if you asked.”
“But only if it was convenient to him, right?”
“I don’t - well, probably, but what do you mean by convenient? We’ll go get your girlfriend, it wouldn’t be an issue -”
“I mean,” Amber said tiredly, “that I’ve been tracking this girl overseas for a year now. It’s not a matter of skipping over to the dragon’s lair, slaying it, and going home happily ever after. Pirates have her. It’s complicated.”
Sam was quiet for a moment. “Oh,” she said softly. “You’re right, then. Thom wouldn’t be too happy about having to deal with that. I’m sorry.”
“Didn’t think so.”
The two sat in silence, somewhat more companionably than the previous night with Thom, but it was awkward nonetheless. They turned their attention to the bar, where a short, rough, butch woman had shown up to challenge Thom and the other men. She was efficiently drinking them all under the table; a few people nearby whooped appreciatively.
Sam turned her bright, ice-blue eyes back to Amber. “I really am sorry about your girlfriend. I wish I could do more.”
Amber shrugged. “You could come with me.”
“Oh - you know I couldn’t. What we’re doing, it’s really important too, you know.”
“Worth a shot.”
“Is there anything else I can do?” Sam asked. “Resources, weapons. . . Thom knows a bladesmith in town, if there was anything you needed.”
“I have so many knives on me right now, you have no idea. I’m good. Thanks, though.” To demonstrate, Amber pulled three from the lining of her jacket, stabbing them into the table.
Sam nodded understandably. She stood up, bobbing her head respectfully at Amber. “I think, then, if your answer is definitely not going to change, I’m going to go get Thom and take my leave. We have other business to attend to in town.”
“Have fun.” Amber wiggled her fingers, somewhat dismissively, and focused on dislodging her knives from the bar table. One knife got its tip broken off, and she swore at it. Sam hurried away, retrieved Thom from his place among the drunken bar buddies, and went for the exit.
***
Later that day, Amber headed to the town’s market to restock on dry goods for her journey, and she ran into the pair a third time. Sam was doing business with the butcher, and Thom, still drunk, had been stationed on a crate some ways away and was trying to stop the sunlight from making it anywhere near his face. A crowd had gathered to laugh at him.
Sam finished whatever she was doing, turned around, and called out to Amber brightly. “I know you said you didn’t want help,” Sam said quickly, striding over, “but just a few minutes after we left, I remembered something that might be of some use to you.”
Amber arched an eyebrow. “Oh?”
Sam reached into her pack, and drew out a small throwing knife. “I want to give this to you.”
“I appreciate the thought, but I’m not really a throwing knife type of girl.”
“Listen. It’s an elven blade, enchanted to always stay sharp and always hit its target. It’s served me well in the past. I know it’s not your style, but it just might help in a pinch. It was a gift from a friend, who told me to pass it on when I no longer had need of it. I want you to have it.”
She pushed the knife and its accompanying tiny sheath into Amber’s hands, anxiously waiting for a response.
“. . . I’m sure I’ll find some way to use it,” Amber said begrudgingly. Sam’s face lit up, and she threw her arms around her.
“Make sure to pass it on when you don’t need it anymore! It’s tradition!”
Amber acknowledged that she would, and the two parted ways with amicable goodbyes.
***
In fact, Amber found a use for it that very same day. Luckily, the bladesmith in town knew the real value of elven blades. After buying herself some sturdy new travelling clothes with the money she got for it, she treated herself to a jar of honey and a jug of wine for the road, and still had coins to spare.
Excerpt: (Big one today...)
“So you guys work with Stiles?” Isaac asked conversationally as he led Allison and Jackson along the track to where the body had been discovered.
“For a few years now,” Allison answered, assuming she would be the only helpful person for Isaac today. Jackson was forthcoming but anything he had to say seemed less than useful. “You knew him from school?” She asked.
“Yeah, but if you’re from Beacon Hills you pretty much know everyone from school.”
Jackson speaks up, “was he just as annoying back then?”
“Probably more.” Isaac laughs genuinely and it causes Allison to giggle alongside him. “Didn’t stop me from being madly in love with him though.” he admits sadly.
Allison isn’t afraid to admit she stumbled then. Freezing right alongside Jackson at the sudden bombshell Isaac had just dropped. Isaac himself didn’t notice he was walking alone for a few moments but when he did he looked back to find them both standing there gobsmacked.
“Guess Stiles doesn’t talk about me much huh?” he asked just a little bit embarrassed. Allison made a small choking noise while Jackson threw his hands skyward in disbelief.
“Seriously, how did that little weasel get two guys to fall in love with him?” He asked but Isaac skilfully ignored him in favour of Allison.
“Did he know?” She queried.
“Whole town knew.” the deputy answered, shrugging his shoulders and continuing towards their intended destination, “Although I would hope Stiles knew anyway since we dated.”
Allison had just started walking again.
“What the fuck is happening?” Jackson whispered, mostly to himself.
“Wait,” Allison threw a hand out to stop Isaac once more. “I thought Derek was the first and only person Stiles ever dated.” Isaac nodded and hurried them along once more.
“Well yes and no,” He relented to her enquiring eyebrow, “Derek was certainly the first person he dated and I assume he thinks he’ll be Stiles last. Stiles and myself dated for a few months when he and Derek broke up.”
“Stiles and Derek never broke up.” The conflicted agent to Isaac’s right argued which caused the young cop himself to huff quietly with laughter.
“Guess Stiles doesn’t talk about anything from his past much.” he states, “I gotta tell you, that does make me feel a bit better.”
“I’m starting to feel like none of us really know Stiles.” Allison muttered.
“Yeah, well I just learnt two people have actually seen Stiles naked and enjoyed it so now I’m questioning everything I know.” Jackson countered inciting another round of laughter from Isaac.
“Now that I can’t claim,” he admitted, “me and Stiles never had sex, though not from a lack of trying on my part.”
“Surprisingly that didn’t help.” Jackson grumbled and then wheezed out an annoyed breath after having a hand thrown across his chest. “Problem?”
“Not at all, we've just arrived.”
It was like flicking a switch. Allison and Jackson went from confused, and a little sickened in Jackson case, to professional in the blink of an eye. From the corner of her eye she saw Isaac looking mildly impressed.
“You got the file?” Jackson asked Allison who was already nose deep in said paperwork.
“Looks like she was found underneath that tree over there,” she pointed towards a large imposing trunk, and after a quick inspection they discovered specks of remaining blood confirming the assumption.
“wide space,” Jackson noted out loud, “no clear trails, lots of obstacles.”
“What does that mean?” Isaac asked genuinely interested.
“Means whoever did it has to be an experienced hiker.” Allison answered as Jackson wondered off a little. “Probably have an intimate knowledge of the area.”
“A local?”
“Not necessarily, could be anyone who travels here often enough to learn the terrain. Although statistically speaking a local is more likely.” She mumbled examining a photograph.
“Any tire tracks?” Jackson yelled, still out of view, startling the young deputy.
“None that our technicians could find.” He answered anyway as the male agent came stumbling back into the clearing.
“How wide were your search parameters?” he questioned further.
“Had a team of about six go about two miles in all directions.”
“Only two miles?” Allison asked shocked at the same time Jackson screwed up his face.
“Only six people?”
“We’re a small town,” Isaac huffed a little offended, “that’s actually a lot for us,”
Allison had the moral conscience to at least look sheepish while Jackson merely shook his head in judgement.
“Two miles is still pretty far to drag a body.” Isaac moved on smoothly. “At least it is for any normal  human being.”
“Well you’re not wrong there, Kolchak.” Jackson retorted unforgivingly. “Maybe she was flown here on a magic carpet.” Isaac was becoming increasingly more put out the longer Jackson was allowed to talk and showed so in the narrowing of his eyes.  Allison was going to have to watch that. Her best friends fiancé had a way of pissing people off that was unmatched by others.
“Obscure references to seventies si-fi-crime shows aside,” the deputy forged on, “the point still remains, this guy must be ripped… if it is a guy? Do we know that?” He directed the last part towards her.
“I highly doubt it’s a woman.” She responded, and Isaac looked extremely grateful. “the facts don't add up.”
“Meaning?”
“Statistics show that ninety two percent of all female serial killers know their victims personally. While it is extremely likely, almost definite even, that the unsub in this case knew at least one or two of their victims, considering the fact that they were spread across three states and share extremely similar aesthetics, knowing all thirteen on a personal level is virtually impossible.” Allison explained calmly only for Jackson to tag on the end.
“Pair that with the fact that most female motives are to do with money, and that we just ruled out magic carpet to the dumpsite, seems a bit ridiculous to suggest women doesn't it?” he asked with no small amount of mockery.
“Boy are you going to be sorry if it does turn out to be a woman.” Isaac replied shaking his head in judgment. Jackson’s only response was to roll his eyes.
“Okay,” Allison spoke up completely ignoring the boys little competition, “So if he didn’t drive here, and he didn’t carry her here then how did she get here?” she pondered aloud. Jackson furrowed his own forehead in concentration.
“Maybe she was killed here?” Isaac offered only to receive a scoff from his favourite agent.
“She died from blood loss Deputy,” Allison stepped in before Jackson could mock, “There was nowhere near enough blood near here for it to have been the kill site.”
“I know how she died, I saw her,” Isaac began then paused, looking like he regretted his short tone. He tired again. “Look Doc Deaton told us she had ligature marks around her ankles.”
“she was hung upside down.” Allison confirmed.
“Yeah but I watched this documentary on like war zones and militant extremist and stuff. It said that sometimes they have to take their victims to remote places to, you know, ‘question them’. Often  they do it by cutting them and letting them bleed to death slowly hung upside down. To avoid attracting animals with the sent of blood they like, dig a hole, or place them over a bucket or something.”
By the time Isaac had finished he looked a little embarrassed, at his suggestion, but obviously couldn’t bring himself to tame the smirk he sent Jacksons way. Jackson however was just looking back with a seemingly bewildered look on his face.
“You are an idiot.” he stated and Isaac deflated a little. “You think this guy just so happened to watch the same documentary you did? You realise the chances of this are like five million to o-“
“Shut up Jackson!” Allison interrupted suddenly.
“What?”
“Shush, I think Isaac might be right,” she waved off his distress distractedly and Isaacs smile grew back tenfold. “Think about it. This guy is meticulous, methodical, dedicated. All things that can be easily explained with a military background.” She grinned back at the young officer before heading over to the tree and squatting down. She pulled out a glove from her pocket and began fitting it over her hand while continuing her thoughts aloud.
“What if he served overseas. He could have learnt everything he needed from the locals and simply applied it to some of his victims.”
She placed her covered hand to the ground where the body had been discovered and started to dig.
“Now considering he would’ve had to walk her here, tie her to the tree, kill her, get her down, and get the hell out of dodge, I doubt he had time to bring several buckets along with him and then carry them all the way back to wherever he came from without dropping any. No he is way to organised for that. However digging a hole would only require a small shovel. Military grade ones can be attached to a belt, which leaves only his faith that the local sheriffs department would never think to dig…”
Suddenly she stopped pulling up the dirt when she was almost elbow deep. The two boys froze in anticipation as she slowly lifted her gloved hand into view. There was dirt, soft and wet from the damp ground as well as small bits of leaf and bark but in-between all of soil, saturating the no longer white glove was deep red blood.
“To bad he didn’t know we would have a deputy as quick as you hey Isaac,” she spoke smugly looking over to him with an approving nod.
Isaac totally preened.
Jackson merely growled at being proven wrong.
“‘Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance’.” Isaac quotes smugly. She wasn’t sure is he was talking about Jackson or the unsub. Probably both. Either way it sounded familiar.
Allison scrunches her nose up. “What is that? Shakespeare?” She asks curiously. Isaac goes to answer but is cut off by Jackson.
“Call a CSI team already,” he spat before turning around and muttering, “If this backwater town even has one.”
Say You Won’t Let Go (Tobin Heath x Reader)
Tumblr media
After some time overseas with the military, the reader, Tobin’s childhood best friend comes back home. Back to her. But will her feelings for Tobin lead her to stay, or go back overseas?
Tobin’s eyes widen in disbelief when she sees you in the stands, clapping ecstatically with a massive grin on your face, your Y/E/C orbs shining.
She leaves the field, bypassing her teammates in favor of literally jumping over the barricade and moving into the stands, her arms wrapping tightly around your neck the second she reaches you.
“You’re home...” She whispers as she buries her face in your chest. “Oh my God, you’re home.” Tobin pulls back tears running down her cheeks as she cups your face.
“So that’s the girl Tobin always gushes about?” Kelley asks Christen who nods, beaming.
“They’ve been friends literally their entire lives.” She smiles.
“ALL of their lives?” Sonnett asks, eyes narrowed and Christen nods.
“They grew up together, went to college together... They only separated when Y/N joined the military, she’s been gone for a while...”
Tobin’s brown orbs dart around your face, swiping a lone tear away that streaks down your cheek, leaking from one of your glassy Y/E/C eyes.
“You’re really here.”
You nod, chuckling.
“I am... I’m home.” You whisper as you slip your arms around her middle and pull her close, the woman blushing when you turn your head, kissing her temple.
Tobin smiles, tightening her hold on you, feeling as if having you back in her arms is the real meaning of home for the two of you.
“Yeah, you are.”
                                                             ***
“So, when DO we get to see this mysterious best friend of yours?” Sonnett asks with a grin, Tobin shrugging as she grabs her things.
“Soon.” Tobin grins pulling the locker room door open, shaking her head when she sees you.
“Hey.” You smirk from where you’re leaned back against a nearby wall.
“Did you sneak back here?” Tobin asks and you grin.
“Some things never change Toby.”
Tobin’s cheeks flush pink at the nickname, the only nickname you’d first said when you met in kindergarten.
Tobin’s eyes glaze over, remembering when the two of you first met.
                                                             ***
Tobin’s bottom lip trembled her tiny knees hugged to her chest as she sniffles softly, brown orbs darting around the classroom.
“Are you okay?” She looked up, seeing an equally small Y/H/C little girl standing in front of her, wearing a small smile.
“I miss my mommy…” She’d mumbled and you’d frowned, sitting on the floor beside her.
“I’m Y/N, what’s your name?” You ask, Tobin ridding her cheeks of tears with the sleeve of her shirt.
“Tobin.” She mumbles and you smile.
“Okay Toby, we’re friends now... Is that okay?” You ask and Tobin giggles.
“It’s okay.”
                                                             ***
“Hey, where did you go?”
Your voice pulls her out of her trance and she grins.
“Just remembering the first time you called me that.”
You laugh, the two of you unaware of her teammate's presence.
“Who would I be if I left a little girl alone crying in the back of the room?” You ask and the forward grins.
“You wouldn’t be you.” She whispers and you smile bashfully.
“I guess not.”
Someone clears their throat and your eyes widen, just now becoming aware to the fact that Tobin’s teammates had been watching the two of you talk.
“HEY! YOU AREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE BACK HERE!” You hear someone yell and you wince.
“Uh oh.” You mumble.
“Hey, she’s with me.” Tobin steps forwards, putting herself between you and the security guard. His eyes dart between the two of you, you ducking down to hide behind Tobin.
“Why are you so short?” You mumble, Tobin turning around to face you with a pout.
“Why are you so large?”
The security guard, instead of staying turns and walks off, shaking his head.
Christen watches the two of you bicker with a grin.
“So, you scared off Paul Blart.” Sonnett says, putting an end to the bickering, the two of you turning towards the team, Tobin smirking where as you are grinning, all the while rubbing the back of your neck and chuckling.
“So uhhh, I’m Y/N, sorry Toby was being an attention hog.” You tease the woman elbowing you in the side.
You laugh, slipping an arm around her, pulling her into your side.
“Yeah, she can be like that.” Kelley smirks, earning a harmless glare from the forward.
Christen suddenly steps forwards, throwing her arms around you.
“It’s really great to meet you, Tobin talks about you constantly, you should see how she gets when she gets a letter from you.” The brunette’s green orbs dart to Tobin’s face, the woman’s cheeks pink.
You turn towards the aforementioned woman, smiling softly.
“Probably the same way I act when I get a letter from her.” You grin, Tobin turning to you, brown orbs shining as she grins.
“I missed you...” She whispers and your cheeks flush. “So much.” She reaches up, cupping your cheeks, something you realize she’d been doing a lot since she realized you were home.
You cover her hands with yours, slipping your fingers in between hers.
“I’m really here.” You grin, Tobin’s cheeks flushing darker.
“Looks like you caught me.” She chuckles embarrassed and you shrug.
“I get it, it’s hard to believe we’re together again.” You close your eyes, leaning in to Tobin’s touch.
Ashlyn grins.
“They keep forgetting we’re here, don’t they?” She whispers and Ali nods.
“Yep.”
“Yo, Tobe, we want to learn a little more about GI Jane.” Sonnett snickers and you snort, watching as Tobin sends her a surprisingly deadly glare, a glare you remember seeing only once before on the playground when a boy had shoved you into the dirt.
“Maybe we could go to dinner?” You suggest, Tobin turning to you with a grin.
“Yeah, you can come to dinner with us and gives us all the dirt on Tobin.” Emily grins maliciously, her teammates quick to follow her lead.
“No, no, no, no.” Tobin shakes her head and you grin.
“Yes... yes, yes, yes.” You snicker, Tobin smacking you in the chest.
“You can’t come now.”
“Aw, Toby you’re a heart breaker.”
                                                             ***
“So, Toby literally, punched her in the face when she found out she was just using me to get to her ex-boyfriend.”
Lindsey puts a hand on her chest.
“I would’ve LOVED to see that.” She grins.
“It was great.” You laugh, blushing when the woman leans against you.
“She deserved it.” She mumbles and you grin, slipping an arm around her, draping it on the back of her chair.
“Well you gave it to her.” You chuckle, Tobin snuggling closer, into the space beneath your arm.
The two of you release soft sighs in sync, as you lean against one another, not caring that Tobin’s teammate’s eyes are on the two of you.
Christen smiles softly watching as the two of you find comfort in one another, making up for the time lost while you were apart.
“Did you forget we were here again?” Sonnett asks, pulling the two of you out of your own little world, the two of you jumping apart, cheeks flushed.
“Sorry?” You chuckle nervously Tobin smacking you in the chest.
“Way to not sound apologetic at all.” She laughs and you shrug, grinning at the woman’s teammates.
“I’m sure you can all understand what it’s like when you’re apart from your other half.” You smile, your eyes widening and cheeks flushing when you realize what you’d just said.
Tobin is in a similar state, her cheeks pink and brown orbs wide.
The forward’s teammates look on, every single one of them wearing massive, toothy grins.
“So how long are you going to be with us GI Jane?” Sonnett asks and you chuckle, turning to look at Tobin.
“Well uhh....” You swallow hard, taking a deep breath, you rub the back of your neck, a telltale sign to Tobin that you’re nervous.
“Why are you nervous?” She asks and you chuckle, shrugging.
“I guess old habits die hard.”
You glance at Sonnett, smiling.
“I was thinking of tagging along a bit for your games.” You shrug, turning to look at Tobin. “I mean, if you’d be okay with that.”
The forward beams.
“I’m more than okay with that.”
                                                             ***
Traveling with the USWNT was something you never thought you would experience, you couldn’t really ride the bus with them, so driving to each and every hotel had been an experience, but every single time you made it there, Tobin was there waiting for you, arms wide open and your favorite smile stretched across her face.
Watching Tobin play was everything you thought it would be and more, she scored you private seats so you didn’t have to sit in the stands, instead having an up-close view of the game.
The two of you had been inseparable, as always, so when a free day came up for the woman the two of you absolutely jumped at the chance to spend alone time together.
“Are you going back?”
Tobin’s voice pulls you from your thoughts, the splashing of the water from the fountain in the park the two of you are walking in pulling you back into the present.
You stop, taking a deep breath.
You take Tobin’s hand and walk her towards the fountain, your best friend’s brown orbs glassy when you turn to her.
“You’re going back, aren’t you?” She says sadly and you shrug.
“I haven’t decided...” You bite your bottom lip, swallowing hard.
“I wanted to...” You pause, turning to the fountain, your fingers nervously playing with Tobin’s. “I wanted to see what you thought first.” You whisper, afraid to look at the woman who is fighting back tears.
“I want you to do whatever makes you happy.” Tobin whispers and you swallow hard, turning abruptly towards her, catching her just as she swipes a lone tear away with the back of her hand.
The muscle in your jaw jumps as you slip your arms around her, pulling her close, the woman burying her face in your neck.
You wish you could tell her.
Tell her that she was what made you happy...
And you were hoping, she’d ask you to stay.
                                                             ***
Going out into the city with the USWNT certainly was something considering Kelley and Sonnett were together, leading the charge.
You eventually end up at the mall, a number of fans swarming the women, all more than happy to oblige, signing autographs and such.
“Geez...” Your brow arches as Mallory, Sonnett, Sam, Rose and Lindsey drop on the bench you’re sitting on, piling up on one another.
“I don’t think we’ve ever seen you without Tobin glued to your side.” Kelley stops in front of you, her arms crossed across her chest.
You grin, cheeks flushed.
“I guess I just want to make sure I spend enough time with her before I leave again.” You sigh, your eyes darting away as you try to swallow the lump in your throat.
“You’re going back?” Sonnett asks and you nod.
“Soon?” Mallory asks and you shrug.
“Not sure, I still need to go sign the paperwork and all that.” You take a swig of the soda in your hand.
Mallory eyes you for a minute before smiling.
“You want her to ask you to stay, don’t you?” She asks and your eyes widen, your head jerking to the side to look at the young forward, her brown orbs locking with your Y/E/C orbs.
“Wh-What do you mean?” You chuckle, your voice barely a whisper.
The women all glance at one another, every one of them smirking your way.
“Come on Y/N, we’ve never seen anyone look at Tobin the way you do.”
You glance away, cheeks dusted pink.
A lengthy sigh puffs from your nose and you shrug, swallowing hard. You open your mouth to speak, snapping it shut when you see Tobin and Christen making their way towards you.
“Looks like you adopted some kids while we were gone.” Christen grins and you chuckle.
“They adopted me.” You shrug, laughing when Sonnett drapes herself over your lap.
Tobin pulls her teammate off of you, ruffling her hair.
“We’re supposed to meet the others at the food court.” Tobin grins, holding her hand out to you and you take it, the woman intertwining your fingers.
The early conversation between you and the others races through your mind and it’s then when you realize that Mallory has moved to walk on the other side of you, the forward leaning towards you.
“You don’t know unless you ask, don’t let her go again without asking.” She whispers and you smile softly, slipping your arm around the girl’s shoulders, the sight making everyone smile.
“I’m adopting this one.” You grin, Tobin and Christen nodding.
“That’s fine with us, we’ll share custody.”
Sonnett scoffs indignantly, slipping in front of you along with the others.
“What about us?!” She exclaims and you shrug.
“Aren’t you all Kelley’s?” You ask and the defender snorts.
“Nah I don’t claim them.”
“WHAT THE HELL DAD!!?”
                                                             ***
“Where’s Y/N?” Kelley asks, glancing around the field and Tobin frowns, ceasing her juggling to simply nudge the ball with her foot.
“She went to sign papers for her next deployment...” She mumbles sadly, her throat tightening.
The forward’s teammates frown.
“Why didn’t you stop her?” Mallory asks, Tobin’s head snapping up, her brown orbs locking with the younger woman’s.
“Why would I stop her...?” Tobin mumbles, voice rough.
Kelley glances around, shrugging, but it’s Mallory who beats her to the punch.
“Because you love her.”
The ball that was at Tobin’s feet rolls passed her, the woman’s brown orbs wide as she stares at the younger girl, a lump forming in her throat.
Tobin’s gaze drops to the turf, the fans still very animated in the stands, though it feels like she’s speaking louder than them, even though her voice is below a whisper, a confession finally passing through her lips.
“I can’t, she probably already signed them.”
                                                             ***
All you had to do was sign on the dotted line, the pen grasped in your shaking fist.
Your eyes flutter shut as you remember the day you’d told Tobin you had decided to enlist in the military.
                                                             ***
“I’m enlisting.”
The silent night is shattered by the sound of your hoarse whisper, with that hoarse whisper the woman lying beside you on the trampoline in her back yards heart shattering.
When Tobin remains silent, you swallow hard.
“I want to help people.” You whisper. “I want to make a difference in the world...” You swallow hard, looking at your best friend and crush out of the corner of your eye.
“Tobin... Say something please.” You sniffle, tears welling up behind your eyes.
Silently, Tobin lifts your arm up before shuffling closer, your arm wrapped around her as she snuggles into your chest, your heart hammering so wildly in your chest you worry she may hear it.
You close your eyes tight; jaw clenched a part of you hoping she’d say, I don’t want you to go, I want you to stay, I love you and I want you to stay... But instead, the woman simply sighs, nuzzling against your chest.
“You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t help people...” She whispers. “I just want you to do whatever makes you happy.”
You close your eyes, a tear slipping down your cheek, one you’re quick to wipe away, hiding it from the woman on your chest.
“You’re right.” You say simply, not even realizing that the woman on your chest is crying softly, unable to find her voice to beg you not to go.
                                                             ***
“Ms. Y/L/N?” You hear and you shake your head, clearing your throat as you glance around.
You aren’t in Tobin Heath’s backyard, you’re in a recruitment office about to sign the papers you need to, for yet another tour overseas.
You give the man a smile and a nod, the tip of your pen pressing against the paper, just above the dotted line.
                                                             ***
Tobin was off her game, her mind on anything other than the ball at her feet.
You still hadn’t showed up.
You’d promised her you’d be there after you’d signed the papers and you still weren’t there.
Tobin sighs sadly, simply knocking the ball away to another player, unable to find her groove to face the player in front of her one on one.
Everyone can tell the woman is off her game, her teammates, her opponents, the coaches, the fans, the commentators, you.
The whistle thankfully blows and you watch as Tobin shuffles towards the locker room, head down, a feeling of guilt making your chest tighten.
You’d felt guilty, watching the woman ignore fans on her way into the back.
“Toby...” You whisper to yourself before racing through the crowd, looking frantically for a way you could again sneak into the back of the arena.
                                                             ***
Tobin was silent as tactic talks began, her teammates eyes darting her way every once in a while, even Vlatko’s eyes darting to her every few seconds.
“HEY! STOP!”
The women all turn towards the door, eyes wide when you burst into the locker room, an incredibly large man on your heels.
“Seriously? You could’ve just texted one of us instead of sneaking in.” Kelley shakes her head and you shrug, ducking behind Ashlyn, the goalie snickering as the guard glares at you.
“YOU CAN’T BE BACK HERE.” He yells again, lunging back and forth trying to guess where you’re going.
“The chase is the best part, gets the blood pumping.” You tease.
Tobin watches the whole interaction with a small smile, but still, her heart aches in her chest.
Vlatko shakes his head.
“Try to stay out of trouble while I’m gone please.”
The man walks out of the room, along with the security guard, leaving you and the team behind.
You turn to Tobin, seeing that her brown orbs lack the usual shine they have to them, the twinkle in her eye dulled by what you suspect is sadness.
The roomful of women is silent as you approach the forward, your eyes on the woman who instead of looking at you, is staring at her shuffling feet.
You glance over your shoulder, your best friend’s teammates nodding, each and every one of them grinning.
“Toby...” You whisper, the forward still refusing to look at you.
Gently, you take her chin between your thumb and index finger, tilting her head back until your eyes lock.
“I didn’t reenlist.” You whisper, Tobin’s brown orbs doubling in size as they dart around your face.
“H-How could I wh-when...” You stammer, swallowing hard, your mouth opening and closing multiple times before you shake your head, forgoing words instead, surging forwards, your lips pressing against hers.
“That was smooth as fuck...” Kelley whispers to Sonnett who nods, watching her teammate and friend kiss her childhood best friend.
Tobin throws her arms around your neck, eyes slamming shut as she reciprocates the kiss, she hadn’t realized she’d been waiting her entire life for.
The kiss is brief, passionate, the two of you pulling apart to look deeply into one another's eyes, eyes that welled up with tears.
“Tobin... Please say something...” You whisper, your heart hammering in your chest, much like it had been the night you told her you were enlisting.
Tobin cups your cheeks, wiping your tears away with the pads of her thumbs. She tangles her fingers in the hair at the base of your neck and you sigh, the woman pulling you into another kiss that makes stars explode behind your eyes, a feeling you didn’t know you’d experience every time you kissed her.
The two of you part, neither going far as you rest your foreheads against one another, looking deep into one another’s eyes, eyes that locked over two decades ago, in a tiny classroom miles and miles away.
“I love you.” She whispers and you grin, tears leaking from your Y/E/C orbs as you lean in for another kiss, your lips pressing softly together, the kisses shared between the two of you salty from your tears.
Eventually, the two of you part, your grins massive.
“I love you too.” You whisper, Tobin grinning as she pulls you in for a hug, holding you tightly to her chest as she ducks her head, burying her nose in the crook of your neck.
You alerted to the fact that Tobin’s teammates are still there when they all cheer, whistling and clapping, your cheeks blood red.
You turn your head, playfully bumping your nose against Tobin’s.
“So, you’ll stay?” She whispers and you grin, cupping her cheek.
“Do you want me to...?” You ask, voice barely above a whisper and Tobin nods.
“Of course I do.”
idk you yet: next up forever
reggie peters x oc
Tumblr media
and if you’re broken. you’ll make your own thing
There was nothing quite like the rush of playing in front of a large crowd. Reggie loved the band’s chemistry in the garage they used to practice in or the energy of small crowds they played for in the back rooms of record shops while they were trying to make it big, but there was no feeling greater than playing a stadium full of people screaming their name.
Luke loved it too, he ate it up, and he was always on fire, always at his best, which in turn fueled Alex to match his boyfriend’s energy, and Reggie could just feed off of them. When they got signed to their first big label, Reggie could just remember Luke’s flushed cheeks, his, “This is going to be great, guys. We’re going to be great.”
“Legends, even,” Alex added.
Which Reggie thought maybe was a bit much, they were still young, still largely untested, but he loved the enthusiasm. Bobby was a bit more chill, probably the most levelheaded of them all, and the least driven by emotion, but even he was vibrating with excitement.
Then they started planning for a tour. Reggie hadn’t even realized a national tour was possible while they were still teenagers. Hell, he didn’t even realize releasing a full album was possible.
“Boy bands do it all the time, think about One Direction,” Bobby told him quietly while Luke chattered on to Alex about songs he’d written that he thought were perfect for a first album. Reggie was grateful Luke wasn’t the one to read his facial expression that clearly was showing some sort of doubt.
The first tour was incredible, smaller venues, but they sold most of them out. Sunset Curve was new and people were curious. The second tour was where it all became insanely real. Reggie can remember the day Luke ran into the garage, beaming.
He flopped on the couch, which wasn’t unusual, and propped his head up on his hand, “So, I talked to Drew today.” Their manager.
Alex hummed, sitting down next to him, “What about?” If Luke had gone and made decisions without the rest of them, he was the most likely to react in a way that wouldn’t hurt Luke’s feelings, but would still remind him that they were a group.
“He thinks we should do a world tour after releasing our second album.”
Reggie’s eyebrows shot up. He knew they were big, he knew they were popular in a few countries overseas, but he didn’t know they were world tour big. The other two boys were also shocked into silence. Their second album was fairly close to release, they’d released a single for it the week before, but a world tour already.
“Holy shit,” Bobby mumbled, and then a few seconds later, “holy shit!”
“Yeah!” Luke was practically shaking as he jumped to his feet and onto the table, “Guys, this is it. We’ve made it.”
Reggie snorted, “Okay, well, we don’t know that the tour’s going to sell.”
“It’ll sell,” Luke clearly had the confidence to carry the rest of the group through it, which Reggie could get behind. He couldn’t quite shake one of his mom’s lessons growing up: temper your excitement because things rarely go as planned.
So they got to work. They put the finishing touches on their second album, which did extremely well, some of the songs flying up the charts to the number one spot for a few days. They announced their tour, a few weeks later the dates and locations. Some arenas sold out within minutes. When they found that out, Luke bragged, not hesitating to throw in, “I told you so,” every time it came up.
They planned a show, put together a list of their favorite songs off both their albums, worked out effects they wanted to put on something fun for their fans. Reggie was a lot more hands on in that process, not the most gifted with tech, but was the most interested in actually looking impressive outside of just the music.
Then they had to find an opening band. Someone who they could get along with, someone smaller that they could help get exposure. Reggie found them first, on YouTube, a couple called Double Trouble, also based in Los Angeles. After watching a few of their videos, Luke approved wholeheartedly and got Drew to contact them. Double Trouble was ecstatic, and thus, the details were finalized.
And the tour was great, they started in the South and worked their way up the Midwest, hit a few cities in Canada, down the East Coast and ended up home along the West Coast for a few shows.
Reggie was constantly exhausted, it felt like a daze. Travel, play, adrenaline rush, eat, crash, repeat. And everything was great, they played consistently well, and after a few shows, he thought they really got the routine down pat. It worked really well for them, and the boys were thrilled with all the choices Reggie made.
The only problem was that it got lonely. He felt like he was surrounded by couples. Luke and Alex, Julie and Flynn, Bobby and his girlfriend that showed up every so often when she could get off work. Reggie was truly the only one alone. Which was fine, they were busy, but sometimes, sometimes the loneliness was heavy.
It all built, crushing him slowly as they crawled their way through tour, more and more dinners after the show feeling like a double date he was just crashing while Bobby stayed in to FaceTime his girlfriend.
October
When it finally overflowed was after their show in San Jose. It sold out, most of their California shows did, and that one was especially incredible to him. The fucking SAP Center. He knew a lot of their fans were Californians, that’s where they got their start, but he wasn’t prepared for that.
They went to a local place, something small that they likely wouldn’t be recognized much at, and once again, he got the double date vibe. The couples talking lowly amongst each other, relaxed and comfortable, while Reggie picked at the straw paper on the table and stuck it to the condensation on his beer bottle.
He wasn’t sure if it was the fatigue that made him snap or just that the weight of his loneliness got too much to bear, he was out of his seat before his brain caught up and mumbled for them to get him something takeout, that he was going back to the bus.
Luke started to protest, hopping out of the booth to grab his arm, but he must’ve seen something on Reggie’s face that caused him to reluctantly drop his arm. Reggie wasn’t sure what expression he had, but it must’ve been something raw to make Luke give up that easily. Eyes burning, he shoved his hands in his pocket and left the restaurant, desperate to crash in his bunk and sleep it off.
Shoulders slumped, Reggie headed back toward the arena, staring at the cracks in the concrete as he walked, not wanting to attract even the slightest bit of attention. That’s when it happened.
-
William pretty much kept to a routine. It was easier for him, especially during the season, and it kept his dog happy. There was something that night, some anxiousness about the upcoming season maybe, that had him out and about after dark, walking Luna down the sidewalk near the arena.
There had been more traffic than usual that night, he wasn’t sure why, maybe a concert at SAP, but he wanted to see it. Before fans flocked there, and before he was contractually obligated to show up and be on top of his game.
It was something he did in college too, sat in the bleachers right before the season and soaked in the stillness of the rink. The calm before the storm. He couldn’t get into the big arena, not without keys and a certain level of clearance he didn’t have, but he could walk around, using the facade of taking Luna on a walk as his reason.
He almost ran into the boy, more focused on staring at the buildings around him than the sidewalk. It was late, he assumed no one would be out, clearly he was wrong. Luna barking and pulling on her leash snapped him out of his trance, confused as to why she’d be freaking out.
The boy obviously hadn’t seen him either, hands shoved deep into his pockets, staring at the ground, and giving off huge leave me alone vibes. William almost recoiled, he looked so sad. But maybe sad wasn’t the right word. Morose maybe.
Luna could tell too, he thought. She was pretty perceptive like that. William only had to consider for half a second before giving in. Dogs always cheered people up, right? He let her pull him over until he was right in front of the boy who stumbled back at his sudden appearance, startled look on his face.
“Sorry,” William said quickly, trying to look as apologetic as possible, “didn’t mean to startle you.”
The boy shrugged, staring at him inquisitively, eyes narrowed as if he was trying to figure him out. It made him a little uneasy, but he figured maybe the boy was a hockey fan.
“Can I pet your dog?” he asked quietly, staring down at Luna where she was practically chomping at the bit to get to him.
“Yeah, of course!”
William took the time to study him while the boy squatted down to pet her. He was cute, William realized, and looked slightly familiar, though he couldn’t quite place it. Maybe he was from the area or lived in William’s building.
The boy was gentle, murmuring quietly to Luna while stroking her head. He couldn’t be sure, but William thought his shoulders started to lower where they’d been defensively tensed around his ears before.
Luna jumped up, resting her two front paws on his knees, and licked his cheek, drawing a soft laugh. William immediately wanted to hear it again, he was entranced. Soon, too soon in William’s opinion, the boy was gently lowering Luna back to the sidewalk and standing back up.
He cleared his throat and gave William a small smile, “Thanks. Dogs fix everything.”
“I agree,” William answered quickly before taking his chance, “I’m William by the way.”
“Reggie,” the boy answered, holding his hand out for William to shake. He did happily, trying to keep the shake out of his hands as excitement started to build.
“You from around here, Reggie?” he asked, genuinely curious and not wanting to let him go.
“Los Angeles actually.”
William couldn’t stop the frown, totally unsure why Reggie looked familiar. He hummed, “Sucks, NorCal is 100% a better place to live.”
Reggie laughed, “Oh yeah? Seems a bit biased.”
“Totally unbiased,” William crossed a finger over his heart, “I’ve been there.”
“So you live around here?” Reggie crossed his arms.
“I do. A few blocks away.”
“Seems a little late to be out and about.”
“Luna wanted a walk,” William told him, and in a rare state of perfect honesty, “plus was feeling a little anxious.”
“What about?” Reggie asked before flinching, “Oh God, I’m so sorry. That was super intrusive, feel free not to answer that.”
William laughed, “Oh nothing, nerves over a new job.”
“Ah,” he nodded a bit knowingly, “stage fright.”
Narrowing his eyes, William nodded slowly, “Something like that.”
A comfortable silence lapsed, and Reggie’s eyes started to droop a bit. He blinked a few times and let out a sigh, “I should probably get going. It’s been a long night.”
“Me too,” William smiled wryly, “should attempt to get at least a little sleep before I have to be up early.”
“Feel that.”
Just as soon as Reggie went to side step him, to walk away forever, William blurted, “Wait.”
Reggie froze, head snapping up to meet his eyes, “Yes?”
“Can I,” he drew in a breath and gathered his courage, “could I get your number?”
Tilting his head, Reggie looked him over, William could see the carefully masked surprise, “Um, yeah, sure.”
William beamed, and held his hand out for Reggie’s phone. Eyebrows raised, Reggie passed it over. Typing in his number, William couldn’t help but add a shark emoji. Maybe it was a bit on the nose, but he thought it was at least a little funny.
Reggie wrinkled his eyebrows, but texted him to make sure William had his number too. His stomach swooped as it popped up on his screen.
Hey it’s Reggie
“Thank you,” he gushed, trying to mask his excitement a bit, “I’ll text you later.”
Reggie smiled, and it seemed genuine, “I’m looking forward to it.”
-
Reggie was oddly nervous. He’d never met anyone quite like William, the boy who either didn’t know who he was or didn’t care. Laying in bed, he passed his phone back and forth between his hands, waiting for a text that didn’t seem to be coming.
Did he hallucinate William out of pure tiredness, he wondered, scrambling to check. Nope, he’d sent a text. Maybe William fell asleep as soon as he got home. Or forgot.
A voice in his head that sounded oddly like Alex suggested, ‘text him’ which seemed a bit absurd at first, but the idea started to grow on him. Thumbs hovering over the keypad, he eventually came up with something simple.
Hope you made it home okay
The response wasn’t immediate, but came pretty soon after.
Just made it, was about to text you
Reggie smiled goofily, and stared at the message. Shaking his head, he knew he needed to respond.
Guess I’m just faster.
The next text from William was immediate.
Doubt it. Just more impatient.
Reggie snorted.
Also true.
The typing bubbles appeared and disappeared a few times while Reggie waited with baited breath.
So what are you up to?
Reggie hesitated, should he tell this boy who he was or keep it vague?
In bed, probably going to sleep soon
He figured it was probably the right move when William texted back.
Same, got an early morning tomorrow. It was nice meeting you though, talk tomorrow?
Reggie’s stomach actually fluttered, he didn’t even know it could do that.
Sounds great
He fell asleep with a smile on his face and when he woke up, phone pressed to his chest, battery dangerously low, there was already a text from William and a picture of Luna attached.
Good morning, hope you slept well. We sure did.
Reggie sighed, thankful that it wasn’t all a dream.
I did, thanks. Good luck with your new job today
William didn’t text back for a while, but Reggie didn’t really expect him too. He knew not every job was like his, so he figured William wasn’t allowed his phone much at work. Which was fine, he’d just wait with a little ball of anxiety in his chest until he got a response.
It turned into a routine after that. William always responded at the weirdest times. Sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes at night, and sometimes in the morning. Reggie never could pin down his schedule, just went with the flow as they worked their way through the western states.
The boys were never really sports guys. If they did keep up with anything it was basketball. But one night, out of pure coincidence, Reggie found himself on a channel playing a hockey game. It looked interesting, and one of the teams was the Sharks which he faintly remembered played at the arena they’d performed at the night he met William.
Maybe he could talk to William about it later, he seemed like the type to be into sports. So Reggie settled in and texted him, unsure if he’d even get a response.
You a hockey fan?
And then a few seconds later after a brutal hit.
I wasn’t but this is kinda fun. I’m sure you’re a sharks fan, they look good
He took a liking to a particular player, number 23 that the announcers kept calling Harris. Reggie found himself at the edge of his seat as the other team started to come back, the Sharks struggling to hold their lead.
“Come on,” he muttered under his breath, nervously checking the clock, “so close.”
He pulled his phone out as the other team called a timeout.
If you aren’t into hockey you should check this out, I’m so invested
The game started again and he put his phone down, paying full attention to the TV. He tapped his knee as the last minute of the game stretched out, totally confused why the other team’s goalie just dipped, but invested nonetheless.
When it ended, he let out a relieved breath as the Sharks managed to hold on and win. Reggie stood up, shaking out his fingers which he didn’t realize he’d been clenching into his pants. He walked away from the TV, needing a break, and went to find something to eat.
Their cabinets were sparse, so he left the bus, wandering to the nearest grocery store to pick something up. His phone buzzed a few times, no doubt William texting him back, and he juggled the items in his hands to fish it out of his pocket.
Hockey’s cool. Probably my favorite sport. Picked a tough game to watch though. Calgary is pretty good this year, but the Sharks will get it figured out
Reggie chuckled and typed out his response with one hand while he waited for the people in front of him in the checkout line to move.
You seem like you know your stuff
The typing bubble appeared and disappeared for a minute straight, oddly reminiscent of the first night Reggie texted him, before the next text finally came through.
Yeah, hockey’s been part of my life for a while
After setting the boxes down and paying, Reggie responded.
Long time fan then. Always liked the Sharks?
Reggie didn’t get another text for a few minutes and figured it was one of those nights William was working.
Nope, liking the sharks is a new development. Started when I moved here
Stirring the pasta, Reggie nodded and decided to text him back when he sat down to eat. It never happened. He’d left the TV on accidentally, and when he sat back down on the couch, the men on screen were breaking down the game.
“William Harris in particular was impressive tonight. He really stepped up on the penalty kill, that game would’ve been a loss if he hadn’t played like he did.”
A picture of his William popped up on the screen. Well, Reggie was pretty sure. He didn’t quite look like he did when Reggie met him, and sure he’d only seen William that one time, but he was pretty fucking sure that was him.
Hands shaking, Reggie exited their text thread and was hitting FaceTime before even realizing what he was doing. It took William a few rings to pick up, and he smiled, looking a little surprised.
“Why are you on my TV? Or at least I think it’s you,” Reggie blurted, not even saying hello.
William blinked, surprised, “What?”
Reggie flipped the camera to show where they were still talking about this Harris player he’d been enamored with during the game. He watched William’s face carefully and saw the resemblance to the guy on the TV.
William winced and put on an apologetic smile, “Um, because I played well tonight.”
“Mhmm,” Reggie muttered, still shocked, “and you didn’t tell me, why?”
“I thought you’d figure it out. That’s what the shark emoji was for.”
Staring at William incredulously, Reggie managed, “In what world do I make that connection on my own?”
William smiled sheepishly, “Maybe it was a bit of a long shot. But I mean, it’s not a big deal, right? I’m still William.”
Reggie took a deep breath and relaxed back into the couch, “I suppose, yes.”
“And by the way, you’re not off the hook. You didn’t tell me you were a famous musician.”
“Oh God,” Reggie shut his eyes, “I totally meant to. I just couldn’t ever find the right time.”
“How about, ‘hey William, I know I seem normal but I’m actually famous and definitely way out of your league’? That would suffice in my opinion.”
Sitting up, Reggie glared at him, “Hold on, if anyone is out of anyone’s league, you’re definitely out of mine. A professional athlete, are you kidding me?”
William scoffed, “And you have fans all over the world, I just have fans in the United States, mostly in San Jose.”
“But you’re hot,” Reggie countered.
“So are you,” William argued and set his jaw stubbornly.
Reggie sighed, “Fine, we’re both hot. But, I’m not sure what this means.”
“It doesn’t have to mean anything,” William sounded desperate, “we’re just two guys, right?”
“Right.”
“And we like each other, right?”
“Right,” Reggie repeated.
“Then let’s just be two guys who like each other. Not two relatively well known guys.”
Letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, Reggie nodded, “Okay, I think I can do that.”
William was silent, both of them soaking in it, and Reggie sat up, “You look exhausted, I should let you go.”
“Wait,” William protested, “I want to see you again. When are you free?”
“I probably can’t make it for a while,” Reggie admitted, “Maybe mid-November if you have some off time.”
“November we have a homestand, I can definitely do that.”
“I’ll send dates.”
William blushed, “I’d like that very much.”
“We should FaceTime more,” Reggie mused.
“We absolutely should.”
When they finally hung up, Reggie immediately hunted down his laptop to start googling hockey rules. If he was going to (hopefully) date a hockey player he should start learning about the sport.
He didn’t think William would hold it against him if he didn’t, but hockey was clearly something the other boy was passionate about, and the least he could do was support him. Maybe the next day he’d be a bit embarrassed about the texts he’d sent, but for the night, at least he’d be preoccupied enough.
Over the next few weeks, Reggie started to watch Sharks games, every one he could, and the ones he had to miss for shows, he’d watch highlights after, all the time looking for his favorite player. William was good, Reggie knew that from the praise he got in the media, but one night he started looking up William’s highlights particularly. Found some stuff from his stint in college hockey and fell down a rabbit hole. He pulled out his phone.
You’re like. Insanely good.
The response was quick.
Ha. Thanks
Reggie scoffed.
Not joking. I’m looking at your college stuff, you went high in the draft. Maybe I was right about out of my league.
William sent back screenshots of his playlist, a few Sunset Curve songs thrown in the mix.
I’m not the only one insanely talented.
Reggie’s cheeks heated up and his palms started to sweat.
Mostly my bandmates honestly
He could almost hear the tone William would use if they were talking over FaceTime, he’d used it many times before.
Lies and slander. I’ve watched videos too
Reggie got that fluttering in his stomach again, and he actually went to look at dates, something he’d been putting off, checking the Sharks’ schedule to see if there were any days that matched up.
Hey, how about November 14?
William FaceTimed him instead of responding. His cheeks were flushed, “Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
“Yes, absolutely. Fuck yes,” William breathed.
For the first time in a while, the loneliness crushing Reggie started to lighten. He knew his bandmates would start to notice, he knew Alex at least was confused about why the fuck he’d started watching hockey, but for the time being, William was his.
It wasn’t a secret really, not a dirty one. But Reggie shared almost everything, and he wanted something for himself. For once. With a happy sigh, he walked over to his bed and flopped down, smiling widely when one last text came in.
I can’t wait
Untangled - Part 2
Tumblr media
“Would ya look who’s here,” Y/N’s heart drops and she can’t bring herself to turn around. There’s no way he’s here for a second time. “He’s wearing a white henley,” her sister leaves with hopes that her little sister gets some juicy gossip and most importantly, breaks out of her shell. A white henley was her weakness on any man but Henry, she was done for.
Inspired by: Butterflies // Kacey Musgraves
Y/N - Your name
S/N - Sisters name
B/I/L - Brother-in-Law
B/N - Brothers Name
It’s been exactly one week since Henry met that funny girl at the bar. Y/N. Even her name sounded sweet. He couldn’t help but think about her legs, and how nice her ass looked, but he also couldn’t knock the thought of how shy she was and how cute her blushing mannerisms were; her fingers fiddling with the neck of the beer bottle or thumbing at the necklace she wore. Y/N just radiated something, and it was too enticing to him. Those fingers and the way her nails would feel digging into his scalp when he,”Hey, Henry,” a PA snaps him out of his daydream, “it looks like rain isn’t letting up so they’re halting until it passes. See ya tomorrow.” He nods and sends a text to his brother who is currently keeping Kal company while he’s working overseas.
H: Did Kal get a walk in today?
B/N: Took him and the kids out twice. Checking in early today. Got plans this evening?
H: I haven’t decided but probably just going out to dinner with some work mates again.
B/N: Liar.
H: What?
B/N: You’re gonna go back to that bar.
H: Hey, it was a nice bar.
B/N: It was a nice girl.
H: I can’t forget a cute face.
B/N: Alright lol be careful out there
Henry slides his phone in his pocket and heads to his car. The grey clouds bring him back to that evening on the patio once again. He was so hung up, just after a couple of hours. What’s gotten into him? His drive back to the hotel was quiet. He was trying his best to concentrate on the car, just the care and nothing else. But maybe she’d let his hand rest on her thigh while he drives. Would she hold his hand on the way back his room?
He exchanges nods with the hotel staff he passes on the way to the elevator, being him usual polite self even when exhausted.
——————————
Henry watches a small group enter the bar and to his enjoyment, she walks in with them. He excuses himself to the restroom, but his fellow crew mates know better, he’s going after her. He rolls his eyes at their snickers but lets out his own chuckle.
“Would ya look who’s here,” Y/N’s heart drops and she can’t bring herself to turn around. There’s no way he’s here for a second time. “He’s wearing a white henley,” her sister leaves with hopes that her little sister gets some juicy gossip and most importantly, breaks out of her shell. A white henley was her weakness on any man but Henry, she was done for.
“Hey there,” He looked even better than before. The Shirt.
“Hello.” She hopes he can’t hear her heart pound in her chest, “Becoming a regular, are we?”
“What can I say? I like a good cocktail,”
“Benny does know how to make on hell of a drink.” She winks at the bartender and they share a laugh.
The bartender blows her a kiss, “Anything for you, Tequila Princess,”
He raises his eyebrow and smirks, “Tequila Princess? What is it about you and tequila?” He becomes confused as Benny scoots two shot glasses in her direction.
Y/N sighs as she turns toward Henry, “Thanks, Benny,”
He glances at the small glasses, “I’m actually not a tequila guy.”
She laughs, “These are both mine.”
“Oh,” He’s adorably wide-eyed, “is this that trick your sister mentioned?”
“Yes,” Y/N holds the two glasses in front of her face, “cheers, Henry.” After placing both shot glasses in her mouth, she rest her hands on her thighs, throws her head back and gargles the liquid before swallowing. She took the drink with absolutely no grimace or chaser, no salt or limes. Her face is completely still as if it were water. “and that is the trick. It’s not exactly mind-blowing and it’s a gross sound.”
“What the hell,” He backtracks in case he offended her “I mean, how are you not positively sick right now?”
“I can’t taste it.” He throws her a look, “It doesn’t burn or anything. So, in school I told a few friends that I couldn’t taste tequila. They dared me to gargle it to prove it, and being young and stupid, I did. That’s where the Tequila Princess came from.”
“Am I entitled to use that nickname?” He’s so handsome.
“Only if you want me to walk away right this second.”
He surrenders his hands in the air, “I shall never call you Tequila Princess ever again.”
“Good,” He offers her a beer but asks for a water instead, “thank you.” Henry looks visibly tense as the bar gets a bit more crowded. She can sense it in him, he’s getting a nervous. She assumed he would be used to it.
“Hey, look, our bench is free.” He liked that, that they had a bench. “How have you been?”
“I’ve been good, tired, but good.” He looks into her eyes and notices that they’re a darker shade than before, “How was your week?”
She smiles sweetly, “It was great, actually. Sorry to hear that you’re tired.”
Y/N is turning Henry into a puddle of mush with her kindness, “S’alright. We actually cut it short today cause of the rain.”
Pointing at her sister and brother-in-law, “Those two almost didn’t want to come this weekend because S/N hates driving in the rain.” He admires how close she must be with S/N, and wonders if they fought like monsters as he did with his brothers when he was young, do sisters do that?
“Do they visit every weekend?”
“No, you just happened to be here when they do visit,” Something splashes and she hears a playful, ‘oops’. She looks up to find a very beautiful woman holding an empty glass and a grin you could compare to the Cheshire cat.
“I’m so sorry. I hope I didn’t ruin your, um, shoes.” She looks at Y/N’s boot with what seems to be distaste.
“It’s ok, we all get a little clumsy.” Y/N is not the type to be confrontational, especially when she knows people are watching, “I’ll just go get some napkins.”
Henry interjects, “Please, let me.” He gets up so quickly that the woman in the conversation can get a word in.
Her eyes follow his behind before turning back, “Listen, I don’t want to come across as a bitch, but there’s so many guys here at this bar that are on your level.”
Y/N raises her eyebrows, “My level?”
She clears her throat, “Yeah, like you’re super adorable but come on.” She’s younger than Y/N. She has those extra long legs and perfect eyelashes, her boobs still up to her neck.
The frustration in her chest grows as she tries not to put little miss spider legs in her place, “All I had to do was smile to get his attention. You had to interrupt us and spill your drink on my shoes.” S/N notices the glare in her sisters face, this doesn’t seem friendly at all.
She makes her way over, trying not let Y/N notice. She hears her hold her own, which isn’t surprising but she knows her anxiety can get the best of her. She almost wants to laugh at how bold this girl is. S/N knows she’s very nosy but this is her little sister, is she supposed to ignore such a situation? She peeks and sees Henry eyeing the two as well. He’s not that far away, he has to be hearing this.
Spider legs rolls her eyes, “He’s just really-“
Henry arrives with the napkins, bending down to wipe off her boot, “Really into the conversation we were having, excuse me.” He stands, turning his back to the woman before sitting down. He’s not sure who is more shocked, this rude woman or S/N as she pretends not to eavesdrop behind a topiary. “You are adorable, by the way,” He wipes her knee, even though there isn’t a trace of liquid on it, “Beautiful, really.”  The secondhand embarrassment is almost too much for Y/N to bear, why is spider legs still stand here? I feels like an hour before she finally marches off.
“That was sweet of you,” Her voice is smaller than he expected but he can see the rose tinge in her face, “thanks.”
He gives her a full smile this time, “I have a feeling things might have gotten a bit out of hand if I didn’t step in.”
She scrunches her nose, “I’m not exactly argumentative, but —”
“Not you, Darling,” Darling, “your sister his trying to hide, just there.”
Y/N watches her sister rush off from behind the plant and act like she didn’t hear a word, “Jesus, S/N.”
He was completely sure of it now. Henry was more than intrigued, he wanted every part of her, “You’re very feisty.”
“Feisty?” She’s never heard that one before.
Henry does his best to put on a feminine impersonation, “All I had to do what smile to get his attention,”
“Shut up,” She flirtatiously swats at his hand, “being shy or, like, reserved, doesn’t make you a doormat.”
Henry could grab her and kiss her right here on this bench, their bench. “Come on. Let’s get back to it,” He nudges her leg with his elbow, “what do you do? Tell me some fun facts.”
"Fun facts?” She clasps her hands, “Ok. Um, well, I’m a painter, sometimes photographer. I live in a tiny apartment with a loud neighbor. I like crime books, like to read when I can. This is not my natural hair color, and I actually don’t care for alcohol that much. People are usually surprised by my tattoos. I also have an obsession with travel sized toiletries. Hows that?”
He’s always gone for the creative type, he should’ve guessed it, “A painter with tattoos who likes to read, and likes tiny shampoo. Got it.”
“Your turn,” She takes a sip of her water, “oh, you can’t say acting because that’s too obvious.”
“Hmm, Ok, I like coffee over tea. I’m really into horror movies and gaming. I enjoy cooking but hardly get the chance. I hate running. I think people who sleep in socks are complete psychopaths. I also like to read. Like visiting home. God, I sound boring,” he laughs, “what else? Ah, I really like mornings. I like working out first time in the morning.”
“You’re not boring at all,” She smiles, “I can’t say that I like working out. I like to cycle, but that’s about it.”
He blurts out, “That explains it.” Oh no. Did he just accidentally talk about her ass?
“What?” To his horror, he has no way to recover from his remark.
He tries to change the topic, “Oh, nothing. You need another water?”
Y/N narrows her eyes, “No, explains what?”
As her sister walks by and hands Y/N a plastic cup full of lemons. She matter of factly states, “He’s talking about your ass, idiot.”
“Ohh,” This time they both blush. Henry hasn’t had cheeks this rosy since he was a boy.
“I didn’t mean for it to come out like that.” He awkwardly bites his lip and tries not to die of embarrassment, “Well, um, anyway, I’m, uh,” Y/N looks up at the sky and jumps as she gets a chill. He watches her tear into a lemon wedge, “Are you just eating lemons?”
“I like sour things,” Her eyes squint, as if she’s expecting something.
He tries to see what she’s seeing, “What are we looking at?”
“It feels like it’s gonna rain again.”
He shakes his head, “Nah, I think we’re ok,” He watches her eat another wedge, “do you two have some sort of lemon ESP?”
“Of course, we’re sisters. I didn’t check the weather but it definitely seems like it’s gonna rain storm.” She scrunches her nose again, he takes note that it must be a habit of hers.
“I hope not, I like sitting out her with you.” Henry listens to her go one about how her and her sister have always just ‘got’ each other, more so than others with their own siblings. She has a best friend, B/F/N, that she has a very similar relationship with. They share stories of their teen years and the dreaded mishaps that are the early twenties. Henry, with beer in his mustache, says, “I should’ve grabbed more napkins,” he wipes his mouth, letting Y/N see the time on his watch. She grabs his wrist to get a better look, but doesn’t state the time. He looks, “Oh, it’s almost 3 hours since I got here,” He checks his phone to see that his fellow co-workers let him know they were headed back to the hotel. It’s just him now.
She opens her mouth to speak but a large rain drop hits her forehead, making her go a little cross eyed, “Well, would ya look at that?”
“I’m sure it’s just a little bit of sprinkling.” Theres a sudden crack of thunder and the sky lights up, welcoming an instant downpour.
He makes sure Y/N gets back inside first, wishing he had a jacket to cover her with, “I told you it was gonna rain.” He absentmindedly tries to cover her head with his left arm, but he was too late. Her hair has fallen victim to the chilly October rain, as has Henry’s clothing.
She can’t help but look at his body, just like the rest of the women in the bar, “You alright?”
“Yeah, just a little cold,” She wants to tell him that his shirt is sticking to him, making him look like a greek god. That god damned henley.
Henry awkwardly shifts, pulling his shirt from his skin, “It is kind of cold, isn’t it?”
S/N arrives and he knows this is his last chance with Y/N, “We’re gonna go back to the hotel before it gets bad out here. Johnny said he’d stay, if you want to stay.” S/N Looks at Henry and back her Y/N, wanting her to take a chance.
“No, I’ll come,” She looks at him, hoping to God her mascara didn’t run too much, “Well, um, I’m going to go before it get worse but it was wonderful seeing you,” She touches his arm only for a few seconds, “maybe I’ll run into you again.”
“Hopefully,” He watches her leave, thanking whoever invented the stationary bike, but already missing the conversation. Her icy fingers gave him goosebumps of his own, but he welcomed it. They were soft and he liked her sparkly nail polish. It reminded him of a hot wheels truck that his nephew gave him. He loved how cozy she looked and, shit, Henry didn’t give her his number. He forgot twice. He thinks to himself, “What the fuck is the matter with me?”
Hey sweetheart,
It’s been 19 hours since I kissed you goodbye, but I’ll never forget the dress you wore to the docks. You took my breath away! Nearly tempted me to do something I shouldn’t have... at least not without permission, and we can’t have that, can we?
I’ve just gotta see you in a white dress again, sugar. Mark my words, as soon as I come home, I’m gonna have a long talk with your parents. Gotta ask ‘em properly. I just wish I could have done it before I left. You would have said no, though, wouldn’t you? Until I’m yours for good, not government issue. My girl’s just too smart to get tied down without thinking it through! That’s one reason out of a thousand why I love you.
I know how upset you were that you couldn’t send me off with a smile, but I’m a little happy that those tears were for me. I’m the luckiest man in the world to be able to say that you’re mine.
Miss you already.
To my best girl,
There’s not much to do on this godforsaken ship other than write to you, so that’s what I’m gonna do. 41 hours since I saw you last and I’ve been sick as a dog. Isn’t the Army supposed to make me stronger? But here I am, barely able to keep anything down. Guess I haven’t gotten my sea legs yet.
The tablets they give us for seasickness don’t help much either, not to mention they taste awful. No one can keep ‘em down, not even Mann and he’s got a stomach of steel. Sorry doll, that’s Archie Mann. One of my bunk mates. He’s a private with B Company, says he’s originally from Mississippi but his folks moved to Brooklyn a couple years back. Small world.
The fellas all say I’m wallowing in my own misery, and you know, maybe they’re right. Wish you were here taking care of me. Then I’d be right as rain.
Forever yours, Bucky
Hey gorgeous,
67 hours now. That’s almost three days away from you.
It’s been impossible to sleep. I feel like a canned sardine – got 5000 other men on this ship with me and limited real estate. Our bunks are stacked 4 high, but at least I’ve got a bottom one thanks to my sergeant chevrons. Makes it easier to sneak up on deck at night and write to you, which is what I’m doing right now.
I might be breaking regulations, but I won’t tell if you don’t! You can keep a secret, right, doll?
It’s a full moon tonight. Nothing but ocean around for miles and miles. I think you’d love it out here. It’s peaceful – actually makes me forget for a minute that there’s a war going on. Then I remember where I am and where I’m heading.
Starting to get a little drowsy, now. Maybe it’s the sea breeze. I’m gonna try real hard to dream of you.
See you in a few minutes, I hope.
To the girl of my dreams,
It’s been nearly five days, and I can still smell your perfume on the handkerchief you gave me. Hope it lasts. I’m not ready to give you up yet.
You said you stitched that pretty pink flower on there just for me, so I’ve kept it hidden in my pocket for safekeeping. Embroidery is hard work, isn’t it? Becca’s always been terrible at it, but Ma’s stitching is the fastest you’ll ever see.
When you get these letters, would you mind checking in on them for me? Becca and the girls are gonna be fine, but I’m worried about Ma. Hope she’s doing okay. Her only son going off to war… I know it’s gotta be hard for her, but she’s too proud to let it show. Maybe she’ll open up to you.
Don’t know what I’d do without you.
Love you always, Bucky
Sweetheart,
Well, your handkerchief didn’t stay secret for long. Only for another two hours after I wrote that last letter! Can you believe it?
The boys have seen your picture, now, too – you can thank Henderson for that. I’ve given him orders to do fifty push-ups every hour for a whole day as a punishment for going through my rucksack, but I can’t say I blame him. There’s nothing better to do. “Hurry up and wait” should be the Army’s motto.
Oh yeah. Henderson is one of my corporals. Johnny Henderson from Manhattan. He’s a rifleman. Rich family, but he wasn’t drafted.
Just seeing your face is like a breath of fresh air, though, and not just to me. Everyone’s compliments were respectful, and I’m gonna make sure they stay that way. Boy, were they all jealous! None of them have girls waiting at home like me. Called me a lucky bastard more than once, and I’ve gotta agree.
Marino said that the pink flower you stitched is a gladyolis gladiolus? That word still doesn’t look right… Correct me if I’m wrong, yeah? No dictionary. Marino’s a florist’s son. Private Joey Marino, my squad’s medic. Italian. Good guy.
Anyway, he said it means ‘faithfulness’ and ‘remembrance’. I don’t think that’s a coincidence, is it, doll?
Yeah, I’m a lucky bastard, alright.
Unabashedly yours, Bucky
Hey beautiful,
It’s only been six days since I got a kiss from you, but it feels like it’s been six years. We’re not supposed to hit shore for another week, and after that, who knows how long I’ll be there? Or if I’ll even make it back?
No, we’ve gotta stay positive, right? That’s what you’d say. I don’t know how I’m gonna make it home to you otherwise. Some of the men here have already been over once, and the stories… well, that’s not something you need to hear. I’m sure you’re already doing enough worrying as it is for the both of us. Don’t wanna add fuel to the fire.
Sorry for the smudges by the way. Someone thought it would be a great idea to smoke while writing a letter to his favorite girl, and then he dropped ashes everywhere. Guess who? Hint: it’s me. I know, I know. It’s a nasty habit, but hear me out. It’s really helped settle my stomach, and Lucky Strikes are a dime a dozen.
Wonder how long that’ll last where we’re headed. Or how long I’ll last.
I’m sorry. It’s hard to be positive, but I’m trying. I just miss you so damn much, and I love you more than anything. You know that, don’t you?
To my gorgeous girl,
Dreamt about you again last night. I woke up before we got to the good part! Normally I’d be a little heartbroken, but waking up to a bunch of men laughing at me wasn’t too pleasant. I said your name in my sleep, and, well, I didn’t just say it if you know what I mean.
Why am I even writing this? I don’t know. Hope you have a good laugh at my expense anyway. You deserve to laugh. You deserve to be happy.
At least my poker skills aren’t too shabby. I won a couple packs of smokes last night. Don’t worry, I’ll brush my teeth extra good before I kiss you again... and before we do other things. Don’t you worry your pretty little head, darlin’. I’ll take good care of you when I get back.
Still thinking about you in that dress.
Bucky
P.S. Just a week away from your good graces, and look what’s happened! You’re gonna have to make a good Christian out of me when I get back.
Dear sweetheart,
It’s been nine days, I think. I’m not really sure anymore. We’ve hit some rough seas lately, which has made it pretty hard to write anything without my pen making a mess of the page. Lots of storms! I guess we’re getting closer to England. It rains a lot there, or so I’ve heard.
Rumor has it we’ll dock in just a couple more days. Then I’ll finally get to send these letters off. I hope they get to you quickly, but that’s more self-serving than anything because I can’t wait to hear from you, doll. Wonder how long it takes for mail to travel overseas?
Looks like my seasickness is finally cured! Not sure if it’s the cigarettes or because I’ve just gotten used to it. Been keeping a bucket by my bedside since I got on board, but I haven’t needed it at all the last couple days even with the stormy weather. Haven’t needed it since I started smoking, actually. Correlation or causation? What do you think?
Love you always, Bucky
June 25, 1943
To my one and only,
Never mind, I spoke too soon. Seasick again. More rain.
Do you remember when we got caught in the rain last summer? I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. You can hear the rain even from inside the ship, and it sounds pretty similar to where we hid to wait it out. That little cabin in the woods with the tin rooftop – I really loved it there, you know? But what I loved more was spending that little bit of extra time with you. Even if we were soaking wet.
We’ll be in England in just a couple of hours, according to my master sergeant. I don’t know when I’ll have the chance to write you again, but I’ll do it whenever I can. I just hope my letters make it there in one piece.
I love you so, so much. Don’t forget that. No matter what happens. Okay?
I know it’s not fair for me to ask, but if I don’t make it through, could you please look after Ma? At least for a little while? I’ve asked her to look after you, too.
Gotta go now. I love you.
Forever yours, Bucky
after four long years across the world hajime is finally coming home to his puppy again. and you’ve missed him like crazy, that’s very easy to see. i chose the words pink collar for this valentines event so i’m very excited to write my first actual petgirl fic for the sewer! ✧ two in the pink masterlist ✧ please go support the amazing creators there as well!!
.wordc. 3.5k+ tw puppy!reader, hard dom!iwa, daddy kink, spanking, finger sucking, spit, hairpulling, choking/collaring, sub/dom themes, degradation, a little bit of breeding
He chuckles, looking at your pronounced pout through the screen as Mattsun gently shakes your interlaced hands back and forth. “Well,” the pink haired man grins, aiming his phone toward the exit for a few seconds, then back at you. “What are you thinking, pretty girl?”
“Hm?” is all you say, blinking your big eyes at the long, empty hallway expectantly.
Mattsun chuckles when you lean a bit more into his arm, going to stand on your toes to try and see over the line of people in front of you to no avail. He gazes down at you for a few seconds with a smile, before leaning down to press a kiss to your temple. “Got nothing to say?” And when you look up with your pouted lips they’ve become all too familiar with, he ducks down to press another kiss there too. Not that it soothes you much, judging by the nervous way your fingers tangle into the edge of your skirt. “Daddy’s coming home, yeah? Excited?” Mattsun tries again, and you whine at the mere mention of him.
“Daddy’s coming?” you whisper, looking back up at the tall brunet for confirmation once more, something that makes him melt a little more. Sure, the both of them hadn’t exactly planned on being a caretaker for you while your boyfriend was overseas, but it’d become plenty clear that you needed all the help you could get. And it didn’t hurt that your clinginess had perks for the both of them too, definitely with you practically living with them both in the meantime. When Mattsun nods, you let out another little whimper, now basically shaking on your legs from excitement. “Right now?”
You’re already tearing up by the time the first people make it to the terminal, no longer caring about anything but the idea that within the next few minutes you’d finally see him in person again. “Look at you,” Makki laughs behind the camera, before walking closer to your side and handing Mattsun the camera for a second. “What’s going on, hm? You’re crying because you’re happy?” It only takes a little coaching to get you to pry yourself from Mattsun’s side over to the other man, slipping under his arm easily but not yet looking away.
“Daddy’s coming. Missed daddy.” You’re trembling now, and Makki wraps his arm tight around your waist to keep you from getting too excited right here and now. Such a sweet, little thing. “He’s coming home now? Really?” As soon as Mattsun hums again, you’re grabbing onto his one hand, taking Makki’s in the other and holding onto their fingers for support. Makki takes another second to admire you, pink collar proudly on display and shining against your skin, looking so sturdy around your dainty and fragile, little neck.
They left the leash in the car, but for a second he wonders if he should’ve just taken it with him anyway. When he looks back at the hall, Hajime sticks out above some of the other travelers like a feast for sore eyes. Glowing, skin golden and warm, with his hair sticking up in tufts even more unruly than normal. He doesn’t blame you for shaking on your feet the way you do, it was more than expected. Hajime’s eyes widen with focus when flicking around at the people, before he smiles wide, spotting you between his two friends. The suitcase hobbles as he hauls it behind him, rushing the walk to get to the gates already.
And as soon as he’s through, you’re already running over, jumping and being caught in his tight embrace as he twirls you around a few times, dropping the handle of his luggage. Your soft whimpers of his name are swallowed when he pulls back to kiss you silly, hands instantly wrapping around his neck to keep him as close as humanly possible. Even for the guys standing to the side to watch, it’s heartwarming, and Mattsun quickly shuts off the video to hand the device back.
“Four years is a long ass time,” Makki starts, grinning when Hajime pulls back from you with flushed lips to give him a quick side hug, not yet able to let you go.
Not that you would anyway, basically molded to the shape of his body as you litter kisses over the exposed parts of his neck and chest. “Hey, puppy,” Iwa manages to say, watching you pull back to sniffle and rub your body up against him in happiness. He leans down a little to brush away your tears, and places another kiss on your nose. “Someone missed her daddy.”
“Missed you so much,” you sniffle, shifting your arms down to around his waist and nuzzling your face into his shirt. “Welcome back, Hajime.” He smiles as he pets your head, not wanting to make a whole scene here, but he could eat you right up with how gentle and adorable you’re being. “Never leave me that long again.” Looks like the time away didn’t lessen your adoration for him, not even close. The other brunet grabs the suitcase before motioning towards the exit of the airport.
The guys giggle when you cling to your boyfriend like he’s going off the war, his expression softening at the sight of you. Of course, there’d been trips flying back to Japan in between, but they’d been scarce and always felt too short. Iwa barely manages to get you away from him enough to look at you again, but after a few seconds of reassuring he won’t be going anywhere, you let him lift you up so you can bury your face into his neck and wrap your legs tightly around his waist.
Makki’s quick to pull your collar a little with one finger slipping into one of the metal loops to make you whimper, before leaning down to whisper in your ear as you four walk through the mess of people. “You should stop making a scene or it’ll take even longer ‘til we get you home, puppy. Behave.” Iwa only lets out an amused breath when you whine at the order, quickly burying your face back in the same spot where you kiss and lick like it’s life or death.
The guys know your antics well enough to ignore it for the most part, walking out into the fresh air. “What were they feeding you abroad?” Mattsun grins after a second, “you look about twice the size.”
“I’ve just actually been hitting the gym some and haven’t been sitting still at my boring job all day like you.” He does look bigger, both more grown into his features and taller, able to dwarf you over more than he already did when he left four painfully long years ago, with the promise to return as soon as possible. He grins though, deserved pride radiating off of him and an air of confidence his years in Cali must have nurtured, before giving Makki a look. “Well, one of you—”
And when Mattsun ruffles Hajime’s hair as a friendly welcome back with a few less words, Makki just scrunches his nose up, before giving a jab into his arm. “Low fuckin’ blow, dude.”
+
As soon as the guys drop you off at home, Hajime has to hold you away from him while climbing the stairs, quick to jam the keys into lock and haul the luggage into the house. They promised to swing by later, already knowing it’d be impossible to pry you away from Hajime for at least a few hours.
The door is shut quickly, your hands roaming the planes of his chest and stomach and quickly slipping under the fabric to feel his warm skin under your hands, pussy already slicking at the mere thought of him. But you don’t even get the chance to pull him towards you when Iwa crowds you into the door, reaching up to pull your head back by your hair and watch you as your eyes fill with tears. “Daddy, daddy, want you, w-want you so bad.” You squeak when he presses you into the cold door more, shifting your legs apart to allow him more access.
“My needy, little bitch,” he grunts, dragging his lips down the exposed part of your throat and leaving open mouthed kisses there, making the bell on your collar ring. He kisses and bites until your legs shake and your grip on his shoulders grows tighter, knowing your signs too well still.
The way you’re rocking your waist back and forth like an animal in heat, head all the way thrown back. He leans in more to drag his tongue down the free part of your neck, before biting down hard. And the effect is instant, because your legs give out as your high pitched moans grow louder, needy begs making his cock twitch.
“Daddy, wanna feel your cock inside me already, please. Please pleaseplease. N-need you t’ fill me up, oh- f-fuck, need your cum in me.” You’re so much smaller under him, he almost forgot just how easy it is to make you submit to him by sheer presence. But you’re so desperate, rolling your hips against his thigh and blinking through wet, glistening lashes when he gives you a little grin.
You lean up to drag your mouth along his neck and collarbones too, whimpering each time you rub your covered clit over his jeans, wetness seeping through the fabric. Your hand under his shirt pushes it up, revealing his muscular chest and abs and making you moan. He tightens his grip in your hair and on your thigh when rocking his hips against you. “The guys better have taken real good care of you.”
“They tried their -hng- best, but—” you whimper, pushing your body up against him more and feeling the heat build between the two of you until it becomes unbearable, “not as good as daddy. Missed daddy, always miss daddy so, oh, m-much!” For a second you pull away to claw at his arms, so he lifts the tank top over his head and tosses it aside, then crushing you back to the door and pressing his muscular thigh higher. Rubbing up against your slick cunt through too much fabric.
“Ah, ahng, Hajime,” you whisper, cupping his face and pulling his close to melt your tongue to his. Licking into his mouth and sucking on the pink muscle until you go breathless, pulling back with your eyes glazed over. “Daddy tastes so good. Can I please have more?”
The pretty greens find yours, narrowing slightly. But you look so cute that he can’t fault you for your greediness. “Tastes good, yeah? Stupid puppy. Need a reminder of who you belong to?” You’re already unbuttoning your own top and letting it drop aside, your pointed nipples bare. He groans. “Fuck, I missed wrecking your cute, little body. Missed sucking those tits and fucking your tight cunt.”
You don’t really respond before his large hand comes to squeeze one breast, then the other, sucking your nipple with a soft tongue rolling over it again and again. Breath heavy and belly glowing as you lean into him. All while your hands rub over his biceps and pecs and down his stomach. Until you get to his pants, nimble fingers slipping under the waistband and down further, but he grabs your wrist hard.
“Nope.” He smiles when you tear up at the loss of his thick thigh rubbing against you, your little moans and whimpers being the thing that would get him off the quickest any time he had to fuck his own hand. But he still can’t go easy on you. “Get to begging like a good puppy, on your fucking knees,” he pushes your shoulder until your knees buckle and you drop down between his legs, glossy eyes aimed up at him and bottom lip jutting out. “Fuck- missed that pretty mouth of yours so much too,” he mumbles, rubbing his fingers over the seam of your lips but pulling away when you stick your tongue out.
You frown though, whimpering at the denial and wrapping your two little hands around his to yank the long digits back to your mouth, stuffing them inside your warm mouth yourself. Your tits shining with his spit in the low light, cheeks hot and already looking totally fucked. It never takes long when Hajime pulls your hair or bites your sensitive skin, slipping into the blissed, dazed state you’re in too easily.
You moan as you suckle on the thick, long fingers, wrapping your tongue around them and pushing his fingers deeper into the back of your mouth so quickly it probably hurts. You don’t mind though, not even when he pushes them down onto the back of your tongue to make you choke on them. His lips curl up at the ends when watching you, his cock growing even harder at your noises and the spit spilling past your lips and down your chin. “Gonna suck my fingers, good girl? Take it all the way into your throat and drool all over daddy’s hand?”
‘Mhm, mhm-ddy,’ your muffled calls soft and needy, gagging again when he grabs your face to stuff your face all the way with his two fingers. Your little throat is tighter than he remembers, though it could also be because of the tight, leather collar so pretty around your neck. When you stop struggling against the invasion of your throat, drool slipping all down his hand and your face each time he pulls back only to stuff them back in to hear you struggle, he grunts.
He finally pulls back out of your mouth to yank his pants down his thighs, along with his boxers, kicking them off. “Ah,” you instantly open your mouth again, dropping your tongue out for him like a good pet.
But instead of the cock you want to taste more than anything, he leans down a little to grab your throat and squeezes, spitting straight onto your tongue with no warning. The press of his fingers in the sides of your neck is enough to have your fingers twitch in your lap, wanting nothing more than your pussy filled while your head pounds. “Did you suck Makki and Mattsun’s cocks this easy too?” Iwa asks though, putting on a frown as he rubs your spit along the bottom of his cock. He swirls his wet fingers back up to the flushed tip though, wrapping around the head and squeezing more glistening precum out. “Hm?”
You’re quiet for a second when you regard him, eyes blown out and dark and mouth set in a tight line, the exact expression that both scares you and makes your pussy clench. “I- I just,” you sniffle, “you said it was okay to. Daddy, you promised— mh-that you wouldn’t be m-mad.” The smell makes you whimper more, rubbing your covered, slick pussy on your own foot as you fist your hands into your skirt, your big eyes blinking up at him so prettily.
“Not— mad,” he hisses when you reach up to cup his balls, whimpering and begging so pretty, “I know your little slutty cunt wouldn’t be able to go without being pumped full of cum so long. Just don’t like it.” His cock still growing and twitching in his hand, turning the glazed head a deep, dark red and twitching at the sight of you. He rubs the warm tip over your tongue for just a second before pulling back, only leaving you more needy.
“My little puppy slut needs cock and cum in here, huh?” He softly starts moving his hand up and down his shaft in front of you, and you can’t help the tears that cling to your lashes at the blatant temptation. You blink up at him with your best pout, leaning forward to arch your back. But he’s not done, pushing his cock to your cheek and rubbing it there while you whimper and whine at it, teary eyes flicking between his drooling cock and the sharp look on his face. “Can’t even go to sleep without having your tummy full and warm. Let daddy’s friends fuck that whore cunt, yeah? My greedy, bad puppy slut.”
The degradation paired with the wait is enough to have you squeezing your eyes shut, sniffling for a few moments at the cruel treatment. But when he clears his throat again, brushing up the glazed head of his cock to your lips, making you taste the precum and finally letting you have a sliver of what you had to miss for so long your body aches. “Beg,” he growls, grabbing onto your hair and pulling your face back a little to look at you. “I know you can do it really well, so do it already. Be good, c’mon.”
You’re so blissed out even being near him again, that it’s hard to think straight. Let alone listen to what he needs you to do. The pounding between your ears is so loud. But before you can think about it you turn over to drop your face to the floor, grabbing onto your panties and getting on your knees how you know Hajime likes having you. Presenting yourself like a bitch in heat, face wet and sloppy and lips swollen.
It’s hardly begging, but you’re so far past begging by now. You want your gushing pussy filled now. Back curved and wet slit on display, you arch your back as you press your cheek to the cold wood. “Daddy, please. Please give me your cock, please use me. Punish me or breed me, I don’t care, just touch me please. Mhm -ah, need you, only daddy can make me feel so good, plea—se.”
You spread your legs apart more, and bring one arm under your body between your legs to spread the wetness around your hole and over your clit, hissing at the touch. “God, Hajime, hurry. I’ll cum without you if you don’t.”
Whatever trance you put him in is broken when you rub your clit without him, tearing up and just needing to get off so bad it’ll drive you crazy. But he’s quick to get behind you and grab onto one of the rings of your collar, pulling it tight and arching your back more as he delivers a sharp spank to each cheek. You cry out as you reach for him, but with a growl he evades your touch and spanks down again, leaving your needy cunt fluttering around nothing.
“Don’t fucking think so.” He spanks between each word, making your skin glow and tingle from the painful surges of pleasure, as you shift under him, sucking your bottom lip into your mouth. “You cum when I say you can cum.” Luckily for you, he’s too impatient tonight to punish you as you deserve, getting up behind you and pushing the warm head of his cock against your drooling pussy, just as eager and needy as you are. “Take it like a good cumhungry bitch.”
He pushes in too quickly, pushing you forward with the sudden motion and filling you up entirely. His fat cock stretching you open so much you claw at the floor, even more when he pulls out and glides back inside the wet hole with a roll of his hips that hits just right. “Ah- ahh!” Your eyes press closed, body aching and everything hazy, Hajime sets a pace that’s just short of punishing. Hips drilling into yours with each fast, frantic pump, his skin slapping into you and pants and grunts filling the apartment. There’s no room for romance, not while he’s fucking into you and holding onto your neck like an animal.
Your whimpers and muffled begs of ‘daddy’ are interrupted by slurred moans and swears as he changes positions a little to fuck you even harder, deeper and battering your insides relentlessly. None of that matters when he leans over your body onto his strong arms, caging you in even more and not slowing the speed at which he destroys you, only to bite at the side of your neck with a growl. “My cockslut. No one else can do it like me. Don’t forget it.”
“Daddy!” you squeak, squirming at the pleasure. “Hmm-ngh, wan’cum!” Hajime looks between your bodies to watch the ring of white at the base of his cock, your entire body shaking from the strain, before he pushes himself back up to let go of your collar and grab onto your hips instead, pulling you back into his thrusts and making you bounce. Each motion is too deep, too good, nothing that enters your brain is comprehensible anymore. There’s only Hajime fucking you, and the beautiful way you know he looks while fucking you stupid.
“Gonna fuck my cum into you,” he rasps, throwing his head back, “gon’ give you my babies. Over and over and over.” His fingers in your skin painfully tight, skin slamming against yours and balls against your clit, and you reach your arms back to grab onto his thighs. “Until you’re so full with cum your belly hurts.”
“Yes, yesyesyes— hng, da- ahng- daddy, fuck your cum into me please,” he grabs onto your hair to pull you back onto his thick cock even more, lifting your thigh for more access, before your belly tightens and your vision goes white. Your toes curl as you clench around him, squeezing his cock deeper inside you as you cry out his name, gasping for air and shaking.
Hajime blows out a growled cry through his teeth as his thrusts go bruising and sloppy. “Fuckin’ vice, ah! H-holy shit, puppy.” He cums deep inside your spasming cunt, hot, white ropes of seed pumped into you. You collapse when your legs give out, having Hajime on top of you with deep, almost frantic breaths and his fingertips still pushing white ovals into the skin to keep himself up, before slowly pulls out of you to scoop you up from the floor. “Good girl,” he kisses your face, along your neck as you try to calm your raging heart, “such a good girl. You took that so well, pup.”
“Thank you, daddy,” you breathe back, and cling to his sweaty chest for a moment, feeling both your heart beats too loud. Hajime smiles, his cheeks flushed and hairline beaded with sweat but to you, though your puffy eyes and wet lashes, he’s never looked more beautiful. He leans over to grab his bag, digging though it for some water.
“Here, drink up.” His large, heavy palm coming to rest on your head with slow motions, he stares at you too. Then he dips his head again to kiss your nose, squeezing you even closer to his heart. “Missed you so much. You belong to me, hm?” You nod.
And after a few sips of water, you rub away some of the drying tears, before pouting up at him. “Can we go again?” Which makes Hajime snort, his face splitting with a wide grin as he bobs his head.
“Yeah, we can go as many times as you want.”
MacGyver Time Travel AU
So, hear me out here. TIME TRAVEL AU. Because it is so do-able. But dang if I know how to actually write it. I’d probably take 2 years to do it right now, idk. So, let me give you the highlights of what I would write, because I feel like it makes surprising sense, but also my head hurts. And it is also totally my head canon now and you can’t fight me on that.
(Using Season 4 plot points here.) Part of the Codex (i.e. Leland’s) plan is to get rid of one, Angus MacGyver. This is because they had a fail-safe, whereby they used a very dangerous technology to go back in time if they failed in their evil mission, and they’ve already used it several times to start their plan again, but every time Angus MacGyver gets in the way with his dang improvising. So, this time they decide to do something much more dangerous and drastic and go much further back to the day of Mac’s birth and stop him from ever being born.
Season 3: Cue someone in Codex has defected with this technology and the new plans this time around and gets them to Oversight. (Hear me out please, because yes, this is gonna be me rationalising one Jim MacGyver’s actions, sort of, because while he’ll always have the emotional capacity of a dishtowel and I really disliked the character, I’d still like a reason for his actions and this is my chance.)
So, Oversight has been waiting for this moment. (I’ll explain why he knew this would happen and how he had a plan all along in a bit.) He quickly puts into action his completely bogus plan to capture one “Tiberius Kovac” in order to get Jack on-mission with a reasonable excuse. He then explains the situation to Jack, who of course takes the mission. How could he not? he’s gotta protect his boy. Like, he leaves Mac to go on a mission to save Mac, but can’t tell him.
[Also Terminator references. There would need to be Terminator references peppered through this entire thing by Jack.]
So, Jack goes back in time. I see him leaving in a Terminator-style crouch (”whatever makes you feel comfortable Jack”) with an “I’ll be back” as he disappears. He lands in the year 1990 on the day of Mac’s birth Maybe some comedy as he steals some clothing from somewhere and still manages to find a cool 80’s band shirt.
The Codex operative got there first and has already waylaid Mac’s Aunty Gwen, so his mother is driving herself to the hospital. Jack catches up, takes out the operative and helps Angus (at this time no-name) MacGyver come into the world. So soft. So very soft. Cue Jack holding a newborn Baby!Mac. The heart-warming idea started this whole time travel after all. <3
But in the fight, Jack’s return doo-dad gets busted. Now he can’t get back to the present. Oh no!
Jack tries to live off-grid as much as possible, so as not to upset the timeline. I mean, he’s seen Back to the Future. So now he’s ‘that weird doomsday prepper’, living off the land in the hopes of not changing the future too much. But he keeps in touch with Angus’ mother and they occasionally have coffee as Jack coos over little Mac.
Despite his efforts he’s been noticed by James MacGyver, who can’t seem to find any record of Jack Dalton, except for a rising young army recruit stationed overseas (he’d be 23 by my calculations, not sure where his career would have been then) by the same name.
1995:  As Mac’s mother grows sicker with cancer, Jack decides to tell her about the time travel and his mission in the hopes she knows someone who can fix his doo-dad, so he can return home to his time and his Mac. He hopes on her death-bed it’s unlikely to change the timeline. Also, he has got to know her and isn’t convinced she would ever go through with the plan she came up with (James says this too, pretty much as he’s dying in 4x8 “she never wanted any of this.”). Mac’s mother convinces Jack to explain it to her husband James, who has already realised something is going on. Jack can’t convince him until he sees the doo-dad itself. James helps fix the doo-dad . . .
. . . thus setting up James to leave his young son five years later and set up a secret organisation to eventually save his son and thus prevent the end of the world – and he would save his son despite any other losses to life etc. precisely because it means saving the world... Mason’s son anyone? Again, James’ dying words in 4x8: “I can’t stop them, you can. You’re the invaluable asset.” Or when he admits to Mac that he was ‘the asset’ that he saved over Mason’s son in an earlier ep (sorry forget which one): “It was my decision, the only one I could make”. Right!?!
But it’s not an exact science and James is improvising, so Jack gets sent further forward in the future than planned (to the end of Season 4), where Mac has just managed to thwart Codex (again, though it’s the first time for him) and save the world. But Jack arrives to find a dysfunctional team, Mac in pain (dead father, dead Aunty, list goes on people, OMG S4!), but at least Codex’s time travel machine was destroyed with their city/bunker thingy, so they can’t try all of this again anytime soon.
Sadly, Mac’s dad didn’t live to the end of the cycle (and I actually feel sorry for him at this point), so he couldn’t explain to Mac why he did everything.
But Jack is back, baby! Even if Jack is now 4 years older than he should be! And Jack explains everything to Mac, because at this point he figures it can’t harm the timeline and Jack doesn’t like secrets between them. Jack explains how wonderful his mother was, why his dad left and the real reason (other than just fatherly love) why he let other operatives die for his son, why Jack had to go and couldn’t get back sooner (and how cool his Terminator moves were) . . . It’s a lot to take in, but at least Jack is back and the truth helps.
Boo yah! Peace out!
Eddie Hearn: “Thank you for being here in Leeds today, what a turnout, it feels so good. I forgot what this felt like, the big stage, the media, the fans, the atmosphere and anticipation for a massive night on Saturday in Leeds. “20,000 people at Headingley Stadium, the home of Leeds Rhinos transformed for an epic night of boxing, live and exclusively on DAZN all around the world. “This is one of the best cards we have ever put on and on Saturday night you are going to have a night and experience you will never forget. Inside the stadium, inside the ropes, the fans in the arena will get one of the best nights of live boxing they have ever witnessed and on screen we will bring you the best talent line-up in boxing. “This Saturday Laura Woods leading the presentation with Tony Bellew, over to Darren Barker and Chris Lloyd, then we mix it up with Mike Costello the legend and Andy Lee. What a team we have here and what a night we have.” Josh Warrington: “It’s good to be back, it’s nice of everyone to turn up and nice to see there’s going to be a big crowd on Saturday night – it feels normal. This is what I got used to, I got used to this big stage ever since I won the World Title. I’ve been looking forward to this for such a long time, we were talking about conquering the world together, winning the Ring Magazine belt, Las Vegas, New York and ride off into the sunset. “What happened on February 13 happened, it was a hard lesson to take but this is where the next stage goes on, the next chapter begins. I’ve been about the game a long time and I can’t wait to redeem myself. “I take him [Lara] very seriously, I think the first time he said that he saw fear in my eyes, there’s not fear in there I was just looking straight through him. I didn’t think that he could bring what he delivered and that’s my mistake, that’s me being too cocksure of myself. I won’t make that same mistake again; I have the fear factor about this one. He said some random comments about me slagging his dad off, I slag my own dad off, but there’s no personal animosity between me and Mauricio – it’s just business. “When Anthony Joshua got his redemption against Andy Ruiz Jr, it was done and forgotten about and that’s going to be the same Saturday night. I’m sure he’s come over with a bit of an entourage, he looks smart today, had a haircut, but once he’s been done, he’ll have given me a massive lesson in my career but that will be it, we’ll move on. “I’m a proud man and it would have made my toes curl to see and watch somebody else fight Mauricio Lara. I want to get my redemption, I feel that Lara is a great fighter, a strong fighter, but I feel like I’ve been at a higher level for such a long time and beaten fighters that are such a higher level than what he is. “I turned a few book deals down last year and I think after February 13 publishers weren’t bothered about writing a book about Josh Warrington anymore. After Saturday night we’ll put it right, add a few zeros onto that book deal. Going back to normality, going back to a stadium, having people in the crowd – they’re my second wind, my adrenaline, my twelfth man, that little advantage. They’re part of Josh Warrington’s attributes, it’s going to be special to walk out, I’ll give them redemption.” Mauricio Lara: “I hope everyone is well, we have to think now that February 13 February is in the past. I’m now completely and 100% focused on putting on a good show on Saturday. I’m prepared not 100%, but 1000%. Perhaps people didn’t know me previously, but they do now in certain areas, there’s going to be a repeat of what happened – there are no surprises in life. “It really hurt me that a great champion like him [Josh] didn’t give me the credit for my performance but that’s in the past now. I can’t wait for Saturday to come along now and I’m going to show him, in his words, that we’re definitely not on the same level – I’ll have my hand raised on Saturday night. “I’ve prepared for a knockout, but I’ve also prepared for the twelve rounds, I can assure you it won’t go the distance.” Katie Taylor: “This is the first fight in a long time where I’ve actually fought in front of a live crowd, the fact that’s here in Leeds, some of my best memories as a kid are visiting this city, going to Leeds United games at Elland Road. This city has a special place in my heard and I never thought I’d have a chance to fight here. I’m just so excited about it. “This is a huge fight for both of us, I don’t overlook anybody, I can’t afford to get complacent and when you do it’s when you start to actually lose fights. I have prepared for this fight just like I’ve prepared for any fight. I’m expecting a tough challenge on Saturday, and I’m prepared for that. “I feel great, I know I can’t do this forever, but I still feel very fresh right now and I still have plenty more years in the ring. This training camp has gone great, I feel sharp and strong, I can’t wait to produce one of my best performances on Saturday night.” Jennifer Han: “My team and I have travelled a long way, all the way from El Paso, Texas, to be here to show the world what we have. I’ve worked my entire life for this kind of opportunity and I’m excited to be here – it’s my time. “It’s already been life changing, we’ve worked hard, and I’ve overcome many obstacles to get to this point. I’ve never fought on this kind of a stage, so this is going to be amazing. “I do have a lot of respect for Katie, I’ve studied her and it’s time to shine on Saturday.” Conor Benn: “It’s either going to be a proper serious fight or someone’s getting laid out, and it isn’t going to be me. That’s for sure. I work so hard, confidence is a luxury for the hard working, and people mistake by confidence for arrogance. But those people aren’t up with me running at 3 in the morning. I’m crushing it in the gym, and when I work as hard as I do, I have the right to be confident because I leave no stone unturned. “Look at the shape of me. That’s a testament to the five years hard work, that’s a testament to my team working overtime, my strength and conditioning coach, my physio, my nutritionist, Tony, my agent, it all plays a massive part. Teamwork makes the dream work they say, that’s where we’re at. All I have to do is focus on beating the geezer up in the other corner, my team allows me to do just that – I’ve done it now 18 times. “I’m very confident, Granados is a massive test, he’s been in with the top boys, the top dogs. He thinks he’s experienced and that he’s tested at a high level. What did Formella say, what did Vargas say. If they don’t want to believe the hype, I’ll make them believe the hype, it’s as simple as that. I work so hard to be denied and that’s where that ends. It’s been five years of hard work, I love this life, I’m a fighter. “You’ve seen the change, the transformation, it hasn’t come overnight, and it hasn’t come easy. I’ve put the work in every single time, I give 100%, I’m leaving it all in there Saturday night. “I don’t believe the hype whatsoever, not in the slightest, otherwise I still wouldn’t be getting up and doing my runs – I’d think I was all that and a bag of chips. I don’t rely on my power, I’ve been watching Granados’ fights, against Broner and Easter, he gave them one hell of a fight. One of the best Granados and I believe I’m going to get the best Granados. Create the hype and don’t believe it. “I’ve had so many people come up to me and say it’s going to be some reception you know; it’s going to be incredible. I’m thinking they’re going to top my O2 debut you know, I just have a feeling about it. I’ve had such a warm welcome here, big shoutout to the Leeds supporters, thank you. We’ve got a job to do Saturday but after that, I might join you lot in the pub and have a beer.” Adrian Granados: “First and foremost, I want to give thanks to God. Thanks to Eddie for reaching out for me, giving me this opportunity, everyone at Matchroom and DAZN. It was unfortunate, both of us were chomping at the bit for this fight, very exciting build-up and then a day before the weigh-in Conor tested positive for COVID. “This is the age we live in now, although I was very frustrating and upset, everything happens for a reason, and I believe it worked out. Now we’re fighting in Leeds in front of 20,00 people, I’m excited, I’ve already dreamt about fighting here, overseas, I come from Chicago. It’s a dream come true, everyone has been very welcoming and accepting. Now it’s fight time and I’m ready to get this fight going Saturday. “It’s boxing talk, I understand the confidence he’s portrayed and that’s why I’ve answered back and let him know I’m obviously not here to lay done either. I think it makes for an exciting fight, I think our styles are going to match well, l think we’ve got a classic in the making. May the best man win, may God protect us both and we both come out safely.” Jovanni Straffon: “It’s great to be back here in England. What I would say about the fight is it’s not a fight between Mexico and the UK, it’s me and my opponent in the ring. What I will say is that I have the hunger when I go into these fights, I look at this as if this belt was vacant and I have to go in and win it – I have to show that hunger to do that. “Any fighter that’s in front of me is a block in the road for and I have to take them away. They’re also a thief because they’re taking money from my family. I come to fight, and I hope he also comes to fight. “First and foremost, I’m not overlooking Maxi in this instance, he shouldn’t either. It’s dangerous when fighters do that, I want to show I have the hunger, if he wants to win this fight, he’ll have to kill me. On Saturday you’ll be shouting Viva Mexico.” Maxi Hughes: “I’m grateful for the opportunity, I’ve worked hard and been in the pro game eleven years. I believe I am just getting started, whoever’s the oldest world champion, I’m going to try and break that record. “A lot of people are now referring to me as the Cinderella Man, that couldn’t be truer, this morning my missus said to me this house needs cleaning before you leave this house. I’ve been cleaning the house, but when I go to the ball on Saturday night in Headingley I’ll be coming home with two glass slippers on. “It’s the experience, I’m older and wiser, you can’t buy or steal experience, you’ve got to go out and earn it. Doing this as long as I have and being around some top domestic opposition, it’s all led me to where I am. Everything happens for a reason, every fight I’ve took and not got the decision has led me to this, now’s the time to capitalise on it and reap the rewards of the resilience, hard work and dedication I’ve shown. “I want to put my name up there in the top ten across the world, hopefully across all the sanctioning bodies. While I’m in this red-hot form, get the win on Saturday and you better put me in the ring with Canelo in this form before it runs out. “Josh has been a great World Champion, not only did he win the World Title, but he defended it successfully in great fashion. You only need to look at what he’s doing in the gym, copy what Josh does because he’s laid out how you become and stay a world champion. We get on well aside from boxing, it’s been brilliant bouncing off each other in the gym. It’s been brilliant to share training camp with him.” Ebanie Bridges: “I’m actually really excited about this fight, watching her [Mailys] fight with Ellie, I think she has a great style, and our styles are going to gel really well together. I think with that it’s going to make it an exciting fight, she’s tough and I love tough opponents. I’m looking forward something exciting there, another good performance by myself. I’m only getting better, feeling stronger than ever, I’m looking forward to showing you all what I’ve got come Saturday night. “Training with Brian Cohen in America and having those eight weeks in Philadelphia, I’m really focused on footwork and balance – plating my feet. We all know I’m strong but if you can’t get into position, it’s not effective. Now I feel like I’m really nailing that, we saw that with Bec, about the positioning and planting the feet to throw those shots to get my full power into it. “My cut for this fight was easy, I just fought four weeks ago. I’m hungry as ever, I love to fight, I’m hungry to punch on.” Mailys Gangloff: “It’s a good fight because it will be at my perfect weight class, I think I’ll bring something that couldn’t bring the last time I was here. I’m very excited, I hope it will be a very good show.” Hopey Price: “It’s good to keep busy, I’m glad I got out two weeks ago and it’s good to be back home, in front of my hometown and fans. It’s another step up, another step forward in my career, there’s a lot of good fighters on this show, a lot of fighters from Leeds, but I’m coming to steal the show on Saturday night. “Another good performance this weekend and I’m looking to step up again and it won’t be long before the domestic titles come my way.” Zahid Hussain: “I’m definitely looking forward to it, in front of 20,000 people. I’d like to thank Matchroom, my manager Steve Wood and my coach for spending time training me.” “I’m just going to do what I do best. Experience is going to play a major part on Saturday night.” Jack Bateson: “I’m buzzing to be back here in Leeds with a crowd, now Covid’s on its way out. Thanks for the opportunity, Eddie and yeah, I’m looking to shine, it won’t be last time I’ll be on one of these big cards. I’m looking forward to it. “I’ve known Josh since we were young kids, growing up, I want to be where he is now. He paved the way for us and I’m sure that one day if I keep working hard, I can be where he is and doing it for the city.” Felix Garcia: “First and foremost, thanks for the opportunity to be here. I’m extremely happy to be here and I’ve prepared extremely hard for this night. Hopefully you’ll see the best of me on Saturday.” Brandon Stansfield: “This is a massive opportunity for me, a big stage now coming from Bradford Hotel on my last fight jumping to this fight, it’s a massive opportunity for me and I cannot wait. “I did quite well with tickets, a lot really. I’m one of the first ones on, I’ll get changed and watch Josh Warrington do his thing again.” Mali Wright: “I’m looking forward to it man, I can’t believe it, fighting in my hometown of Leeds. I went to university in Headingly, I used to live there, 2-minute walk from the stadium. It’s surreal even seeing my name here, so I can’t wait and I’m looking forward to it.”
