2. for the next itmf: are there any fics where wangxian just enlope and leave everyone behind to deal with it? where there are actual, something that makes the characters actually feel the, im not sure if this is the right word, consequences of an enlopement? or that wangxian just gave up making other people accept their love and just do what they want? like they don't care that they don't have approval.

i have seem many fics where they say that they want to get married expecting the disapproval of everyone, and magically no one has anything against it or at least not the characters that matter, or the ones that are against it are won over. the enlopement are usually used as a last resource not actually needed

How can you knock him down a peg for not fighting back,,, 😭 Adrien's lesson isn't that he needs to learn how to fight back, it's that Nathalie shoulda called cps sooner!!! In the movie they are much more of an estranged father-son pair than anything abusive. So obviously the back talk is much easier too. Movie!Adrien gets to go out alone and with friends unless his dad has specifically planted an enemy where he is. Show!Adrien has been beaten, mind controlled, forced to hurt Marinette, isolated and locked up, etc.- he has been TERRIFIED of his dad multiple times.

Man I am so sick of this complaint- the show has never rewarded Marinette for her obsessive behavior. BC IT IS A CHARACTER FLAW. One they use for cringe comedic purposes, but a flaw nonetheless. Every time she has done anything that hurts others in pursuit of Adrien she is punished by the writers. And bc the show has an episodic monster-of-the-week format, this plot is recycled a lot (which is its own complaint). And guess what? SHE STOPS BEING OBSESSIVE. YEAH. SHE STOPS DOING THAT SHIT- so what do you want now??? She grew out of it after it costs her the miraculous so why tf are yalls still hurling this at her like its a L,,,,

This Marinette is just a watered down boring version of show!Marinette. She's just a girl who gets insecure at times but grows confident bc she's Ladybug. Ok. So is our Marinette but MORE. Our Marinette is super smart, creative, resourceful, an overthinker, extremely kind and selfless to others, gets jealous and reckless when her emotions get the better of her, etc. She is fully formed even after watching just 3 episodes of S1.

Like the fact that they didn't even bother to include the oh so important hook of the show- her lucky charm power- shows they didn't care about doing this story justice- its so transparently lazy writing 💀 (miraculous of creation where??? CN gets cataclysm for destruction but what is movie!LB bringing to the yin yang table,,,)

Legitimately all the comparisons I'm hearing from people saying the movie is better are from those who just aren't caught up with the show where Marinette is no longer toxically obsessive with Adrien, where the plot/lore is insane but 10000000x better and more creative than what the movie gave us, the love square was much better developed EVEN FROM JUST THE ORIGINS EPISODES, etc. Istg these people stopped at S3 where the show was at its worst (if I were to pinpoint it)

Adora and Catra grew up together and are abused by a manipulative parent figure (more blatantly in Catra's case, while Adora is clueless), and then Adora runs off and leaves Catra and their shared dreams behind to become a superhero for their worst enemies, so Catra becomes She-Ra's worst enemy and eventually tries to destroy the world (and nearly succeeds) because she doesn't know how to healthily process her feelings, and she only gets worse to everyone around her until season 5 when she finally starts to become a functional person, then her and Adora kissing saves the universe in the final episode

hi!! i'm stumbling into your ask box again, hope you don't mind

i wonder,, what are your thoughts on Geto's upbringing? i've seen quite a few takes on what his childhood could've been like, but as long as the story itself is not particularly generous with answers in this regard, the topic stays controversial -- at least for me. i personally tend to think that there were some issues in the household, and the environment he grew up in was not exactly a safe space for a child. because we have to assume that, being that strong at the age of sixteen, chances are he was familiar with his technique for long enough already, probably having started consuming curses pretty early on. so what does that say about his parents? thinking of the prospect of forced eating makes me feel unwell. and what about the fact he was a sorcerer born to a non-sorcerers family? how frightening and unclear and lonely must that have been? were his parents aware of their child's exact whereabouts after he enrolled into Jujutsu High? how much did they know? also, taking in consideration all the problems inherent in Japan's educational system, is there a chance that Geto's gift was a sort of convenience to them? because sorcerers are usually pretty well-off due to high demand and low supply and their son's abilities could solve financial problems related to getting him educated? could they have some inner motifs while also being genuinely concerned about Geto's well-being? might it be a reason why they encouraged their son, a literal child, to absorb those foul, god-awful beings? could they fully understand what they're asking him to do, lacking the ability to even see those creatures? but then again, i find it hard to imagine somebody coming out of an abusive household and still having a strict moral codex and a concrete sense of justice like Geto's. and when he says that the sorcerers have a responsibility to protect the weak, doesn't he think about his parents first? what if he's clinging so determinedly to his ideas because he needs them to somehow rationalize his childhood experience? and what if those ideas stem from his parents guilt tripping him in the past? and what's up with his distinctly traditional clothes? might he come from a religious background?

so what's your opinion on *vaguely gestures at everything above* all of that? apologies for such a lengthy ask, i obsess over thinking about geto and just needed to share it with somebody more competent and knowing than me,, and i would genuinely love to hear your thoughts!! thank you! 🧡

I was looking around for some posts where I speculated about Geto's upbringing that had some lovely additions to it by @lulubaii where they share their thoughts as well, but I couldn't find them, sorry.

That being said, I go one of two ways on Geto's upbringing where I either think his childhood and relationship with his parents was fine, normal even. Or where he didn't have a stellar upbringing at all.

I lean more toward the latter, for reasons that I'll get into in a second, but I do appreciate how sad him having a normal boring childhood would be when you add the context of him feeling like he had to kill them to cement his own ideas. Where killing them wasn't born out of any specific negativity toward them, but rather what they were -- non-sorcerers. If there was love there, then that makes Geto's actions all the more heartbreaking and awful, and adds to the idea that there was no going back for him once he committed to the path he wanted to take. If he ever had his doubts about his actions (and I like to think he did, no matter how much he didn't want to): How do you forgive yourself for that? How do you reconcile that with anything other than overwhelming grief and regret? You can't. So you don't. So you press forward and insist, even to yourself -especially to yourself- that you're doing what's necessary.

All of that being said, I actually think that Geto had a troubled upbringing, or at least one that was neglectful if not outright abusive. There are two reasons for this; the first being the question of how he even knew that he could eat curses, and the second being the fact that his immediate next step after rescuing Mimiko and Nanako (two sorcerers -children- that were abused by non-sorcerers that didn't understand what they were and used the excuse of fear to hate/harm them for it) was to kill his own parents.

There's so much immediacy to him going after his parents that I never really articulated before. Assuming that the report of his actions reached the higher-ups --and his subsequent execution order was issued-- the day after, and he met with Shoko in Shinjuku in the late afternoon/early evening, that leaves him that single night/morning to find a place for the girls, travel to his home, kill his parents, and then travel to Shinjuku.

And sure, you could argue that he was operating on the 'high' of what happened in the village, but I find it hard to believe that the adrenaline carried him through the entire journey to kill them unless he had something to be angry at them specifically for. My question would be: Was he upset over something they did or something they didn't do? Is it a case of them using his technique for their own gain until he was scouted and that income could be supplemented through his missions instead? Or did they fail to protect him from the same kind of people that set him off in the village?

The answer that I've landed on after lots (and lots) of thinking is that Geto's parents were probably just extremely poor, and him figuring out his technique was the result of hunger. He most likely found out soon after eating one that Curses weren't a viable food source, but until he tried one, they would have been one that only he had access to. It would've doubled as a secret only he knew and a way to lessen the burden of providing for him, which is exactly the kind of thinking that I could see a young child falling into. Then, as he and his collection of curses grew over the years, it's possible that he (through the urging or actions of his parents) started using his technique to get money for their household from the people around them, which would have alienated him from the people in his town and might have inspired a less extreme but equally hurtful version of the fear and hate that he saw mirrored with the girls.

I could also see how this would be something that solidified Geto's stance on protecting non-sorcerers while putting them in a lesser position than himself (i.e. him seeing them as 'the weak;' a concept that you can tie to both parents that he was providing for -protecing from poverty- and townsfolk that he was exorcising curses for -protection from curses), on top of adding some interesting context to his reaction and response when Gojo asks if he should kill the members of the SPVA. Specifically, him saying "Forget it. It's pointless" makes me wonder if he's been in a similar situation where he had to talk himself out of using his abilities against non-sorcerers after their actions caused him pain and he was falling back into that mindset when talking to Gojo. That they can't act against them, regardless of if they want to, so there's no reason to dwell on it.

Additionally, Geto exorcising Curses for money would have more than likely drawn the attention of a Window, seeing as it's their job to scout for curses. (Therefore, providing Sorcerers a way to make money.)

If Geto was getting rid of Curses around his village frequently enough or for long enough --like the nine years between his Technique manifesting and his being admitted to the school-- it would have probably created an anomaly where there weren't any Curses (or any strong enough Curses to require a Sorcerer) where there should be, prompting an investigation into why that was happening.

My (loose) supporting evidence for this idea would be the issues with food that Geto develops after the Star Plasma Vessel incident (a habit that he could have broken and then fallen back into once he was under enough stress, which isn't at all unheard of, especially with people that grew up food insecure) and the role he falls into once he starts his cult, i.e. using his technique to "cure" people to collect curses and money. He seems perfectly comfortable doing so if you don't count his general dislike of dealing with non-sorcerers, so it isn't unrealistic to me that he'd be operating under prior experience. Same as the struggles with eating, it'd be like falling back into a bad habit of sorts.

Side Note: I heard a quote the other day that went something along the lines of "One year of consistency can change the trajectory of a person's life, regardless of what stage of life they're in" and while this was speaking toward stable, consistent support and positive relationships changing someone's life for the better, it stands that the opposite is true as well. One year without adequate support and negative or absent relationships can very much turn someone for the worse, whether that represents itself internally or externally. And I think it's safe to say that Geto was very much lacking in consistent support and friendship (him and Gojo going on so many missions alone, away from each other, Shoko, and their kohai) in the year between Riko's death and Geto's defection.

All of this isn't to say that Geto's parents are to be blamed for their own deaths or that his actions weren't inexcusable, but it does add important context, I think.

Trauma, especially the kind that he and Gojo went through, fundamentally changes a person, and not just emotionally.

A topic that I've always found interesting and highly recommmend further reading on if you want is how trauma physically affects our brains and the rest of our body. Specifically, when our brain is still developing throughout our childhoods and teenage years, significant trauma (Toji) and repeated triggering of fight or flight (the influx of missions) can cause the brain put itself into survival mode even when danger isn't actually present. (This is partly where we get things like extreme anxiety, ptsd, c-ptsd, and other stress disorders.) The problem with this is that when your brain goes into suvival mode it pushes blood away from itself and your vital organs and out to your extremities (arms, legs, etc) so that you can get away from whatever the danger is. This, in turn, can cause issues with memory formation, emotion regulation, our ability to reflect and respond to issues we have with moral flexibility, and our ability to feel empathy (etc, the list goes on) on top of having long term effects on our bodies itself like lack of appetite, persistent anger and irritation, disassociation and confusion, faster heart-rate, issues with over- or under-sleeping, susceptibility to chronic illness, etc.

But let's get back on topic and answer your other questions:

I imagine Geto was very lonely before he went to Tokyo; no one in his family were sorcerers and I doubt that anyone else in his village was either, since he was scouted to be a sorcerer (probably by a Window) instead of referred by one. I highly doubt he had anyone that he could relate to about the whole issue of seeing curses and the inherent disgust involved with using his technique. I also think the isolation concerning the latter probably didn't go away even after he moved to the high school, seeing as he points out he's the only one that truly knows what a curse tastes like. It's something that sets him apart from both sorceres and non-sorcerers, something that others him.

I don't think that his parents had much of an idea of what his time at Jujutsu Tech was like. I highly doubt the school gives an accurate report to their students' families on what their kids are doing, and if Geto's parents truly viewed him/his technique in a negative light, I'd think that they were most likely just happy that he wasn't around while also getting a free education from a religious private school,* plus an allowance from the school for his missions and rank as a sorcerer. (If I remember correctly, Special Grades get a decent amount of money based on their rank alone, even before adding the payouts involved with exorcising higher-level Curses.)

I actually don't find it all that hard to see Geto coming away from an abusive or negligent household with a high moral code and a strong sense of justice. Plenty of people do all the time, and the idea that they don't is more of a myth than a fact. Yes, some people grow up and continue to perpetuate cycles of abuse, but correlation doesn't at all equal causation. In fact, the opposite is more common; where someone escapes their initial unhealthy environment only to end up in another one because they have no other frame of reference that allows them to recognize the ways in which it was unhealthy in the first place.

As for why he chose monk robes to wear after defecting, I'll reference Gege here, and say that Geto picked the Gojo-kesa simply because it had Gojo in the name and it helped him hold on to what he had given up. (Now that I think about it, it also probably served as a reminder of why he was doing what he was doing in the first place. Kinda like the "Do it for her" meme, but with clothes that have your best friend's name.)

Nate was born the only child to Margarget and James Windsor, a surname with a generational history in politics and positions of authority in Southern California. As you can probably imagine, there was a lot of expectation that came with that.

Nate was not the little baby prodigy they were hoping for: too curious, too outspoken, too "soft". He struggled to reconcile the son they wanted and the one that he was, and as a teen, he was shipped off to a reform camp to be straightened out.

Surprise, it was not at all like an extended summer camp, but rather a place intended to strip him of all the things that made him him. It was here, though, that he met @skyecarrington. Skye helped him, along with others, escape the camp. But when faced with the choice of setting off on his own or returning home, he chose home. Still, Skye gave him his number and told him to call if he ever needed anything

Upon Nate's return home, he did his best to go through the motions and be the Windsor heir that everyone expected him to be. He studied poli sci, he volunteered, he made speeches and earned the public's adoration. As it turned out, he was really good at charming people. It served him well.

He was super not interested in politics, though. He wasn't really interested in the future wife his mom had picked out for him either. So it was nothing short of fate when he met @daphnebishop. For him, he would have sworn it was love at first sight. She was bold in all the ways he'd been malleable, she was living color to his black and white life.

His parents hated it, of course. They did what they could to break them up, but no dice.

Eventually, they were married. It was the best time of Nate's life. He blossomed under her love, the kind of unconditional thing he should have always had and never did.

But instead, she let him go. He woke up one morning to divorce papers and a sudden reappearance of that black and white life. He would be ashamed to admit that he lost himself in the heartbreak. For two months, he was little more than a recluse. He drank away his feelings, he didn't leave the house except to get more alcohol. It was during one such trip that he was jumped in an attempted mugging. When it became clear it was a 'him-or-me' situation, a shard of broken glass aimed at just the right spot saved his life.

It had unknowingly triggered a werewolf curse. The morning after the next full moon, he awoke naked in the middle of a field, dried blood under his fingernails with only bits and pieces of memory from the night before. Something told him to call that number Skye had left him with all those years ago. He'd heard about his death, had even mourned him in private. But still, something told him to call. Imagine his surprise when Skye picked up.

After brief discussions, Skye convinced Nate to come to Lunar Cove. He promised he would find what he needed there. And Nate, with nothing tethering him to California, and a desperate need to understand what was happening to him, made the move.

Now, he's just trying to figure out what life even is now.

Nate can play the piano and sing surprisingly well. He also taught himself a little bit on the guitar through youtube videos, but he's way less practiced with that

You'll probably never see him in a t-shirt. For as down to earth as he is (especially if you've ever met his parents), he still dresses expensive. He loves long-sleeved dress shirts and button downs with the sleeves rolled to the elbow. But often, he'll add a basic little baseball hat to his outfits which really throws off the whole thing in an awww he's trying kind of way

....I felt like I had tons more hcs to add here when I was stuck at work all day and now that I'm here, I have zero thoughts. Soooo this will be updated!

HOOOOOOOO MAN I PICKED A GOOD TIME TO CHECK YOUR BLOG BC YAY UPDATE!!! And I have, just, so many thoughts.

Firstly, I really liked how the chapter flowed and I thought you did a great job translating what was essentially a shadow slideshow in the game into an actual scene. Plus, we get to actually see RoseDad! He's an actual person and not a vague namedrop in some card line somewhere.

Secondly, I absolutely still hate RoseMom, always have but you wrote it in a way that feels...real?? Like before, she was just a vaguely awful Karen figure with no detail. Kinda like how the game has her as just a shadow figure with no details. But now she's real. I've met/heard of women/parents exactly like that and its awful to see a realistic(ish) reality that Riddle could have suffered through.

Poor, poor Riddle. And that final bit with Riddle and RoseDad was a kick in the teeth. Literal parent alienation and RoseDad knowing he wouldn't be able to see his son if he went for a divorce? But he still lost his son to his overbearing wife anyway?? Here's to hoping that Riddle and RoseDad manage to reconcile in the real world, especially since Riddle IS almost an adult (like Kal pointed out).

So excited to see what's coming next!!

I'm also very happy about everyone's reactions to Mama and Papa Rosehearts!!!! Several people commented on how realistically I've depicted the two and Riddle's situation, and I'm glad I could achieve that in some way since it's not a situation I've seen personally in my own life IRL. (At least in the strict/abusive parent side of things. I've very familiar with Mama Rosehearts brand of "I am the most talented doctor here, therefore I know everything about medicine and am therefore correct in all health decisions made for my son", thanks to a number of family members who work in medical 😅)

I'm not entirely done with Papa Rosehearts though, don't y'all worry 😉 I've got a particular bonus chapter for TA planned for him and Riddle.

Papa on the other hand, has aged rather gracefully despite everything (going entirely grey pretty quickly from stress). Riddle had his Papa's eyes.

What's funny is how this makes me think of parents shittier than Bruce. It's almost like starting with Marv Wolfman giving us Trigon, Deathstroke, and Myand'r, writers insisted? Chuck Dixon gave us David Cain, someone who literally made me want to reach into the panel and strangle him. Tom King had that whole thing with two sisters at war, and as a bonus, they're related to Kate. That's bats for you.

Comics of the 80s-2000s are obsessed with terrible parents! In the Bat books alone, just off the top of my head, you've got Harvey Dent's parents, the retcon to make Barbara's biological dad an alcoholic, Steph's dad, Helena's whole deal, the retcon to make Catwoman into Falcone's daughter, David Cain (created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, btw), Ra's al Ghul, SHONDRA KINSOLVING DEAR LORD.

(There were of course plenty of bad parents outside of Bat books—this is the era where Wally's relationship with his dad was changed to be much more complicated, for instance.)

It's funny, because I think Wolfman and Perez, at least, understood what they were doing with Bruce. Like, you read through New Teen Titans, you look at all of Dick's interactions with Bruce, and that's not just an abusive father, that's an abusive father written by people who have put some real thought into the exact kind of abusive he is. In NTT, when Bruce hits Dick, it's not out of nowhere, and it doesn't go nowhere. The argument in New Titans #55 is heavily tied into Dick and Bruce's specific history, and after Bruce hits Dick, he immediately starts gaslighting him about a real conversation that we've seen them have previously. In subsequent issues, Dick talks to a therapist about the incident, and it lays the groundwork for the response he's going to have in Batman: Year Three and A Lonely Place of Dying. Like, the one line from Batman: Year Three:

"I feel like the child of an alcoholic—you know the problem isn't yours, but it is."

That's not a line written by someone who thinks that Dick and Bruce's relationship is healthy!

We all love to talk about how the Titans all hate each other's parents, and I think for Wolfman and Perez, that's very much the point of the team. These are young adults who have all been very let down by their parents in one way or another, and so they find each other and become each other's family. So yes, Trigon and Deathstroke and Myand'r and Bruce are all different kinds of bad, but they're all part of the same conversation.

But then you move out of the Titans era and into the solo Nightwing era, and it's the 90s and comics are just getting generally grimmer, and Batman is being written as increasingly violent and isolationist. And all of the behaviors he had under Wolfman and Perez are still there, and sometimes even worse, but he's being written by people who I don't think actually understand that he's abusive. Like, in this post, I don't think either Ed Brubaker or Chuck Dixon noticed or intended that parallel.

As for O'Neil, I honestly think he just leaned towards reconciliation generally, and towards a much less abusive characterization of Bruce specifically, and I guess introducing EXTREMELY TERRIBLE fathers in Nightwing Vol 1 was his way of squaring that circle. I'm thinking about "Snowbirds Don't Fly," and how O'Neil wanted that story to end with Roy and Ollie reconciling—even though there was absolutely no reason they should've! It feels like a similar impulse was at play in his Nightwing mini.

YAYAY OK so this might be long sorry

BIG TW for religious trauma, child abuse, internalized homophobia(?) and the fucked up ways it affects these characters that idk how to describe to be very honest with u

for starters, jim and bettie (his ex-wife) both grew up very sheltered in violently strict families who were obsessed with their public image as a Perfect Nuclear Family TM, especially at the church they both went to (which is also how they met)

and for a while, they were odd friends. neither knew how to socialize that well but they understood eachother in a way nobody else did. but later as they grew up and as their situations worsened, they had a really bad falling out (jim became more quiet, obedient and sensitive while bettie just got more fed up and aggressive, even to jim, because of their clashing trauma responses and some extreme dysphoria stuff she didn't have the words for yet) and not long after, jim hears that she ran away from home at age 12 and was never found.

jim's home life got BAD to the point of legal intervention when he was 11, and for a while after he was tossed around between other relatives (who weren't much better, although he got a bit more freedom to leave the house as he got older)

they found eachother again around their mid-teens, when jim moved way out of their hometown to live with one of his relatives (bettie recognized jim pretty easily bc he still dressed and looked nearly the same as he did as a kid LOL) and they got to catch up and reconcile <:]c she got help and support of her own after running away, and became a Lot happier after starting her transition !!

bettie became sort of his only support and escape from everything during that time, and as they grew closer and hung out again more, they started to date. this was a HUGE step in jim getting further away from the constant fear of judgement his family left on him, and pushing back on the "what would my parents think, what would god think" etc. paranoia/guilt he was stuck with for so long.

and while he still has that, and a whole lot of self worth issues and disgust with himself resurfacing from being genuinely loved for the first time (+ since he was still an egg at the time, and viewed their relationship as wlw, theres That factor there too in the "i'm a disgusting unlovable sinner and any second they'll find out and i'll get my punishment" view of himself and any time he let himself be happy) he at least had her, and her friend groups to help him

not long later, jim fully moved in with bettie and the people she was staying with, and he got therapy for a while too ! and in doing so, and processing more of his trauma and feelings better, he realized that he's a trans man and came out to bettie. (and of course, she was ecstatic for him and was So Ready to help him with any steps that he wanted to take with transitioning. she cut his hair for him bc he couldn't bring himself to do it and he was an overjoyed sobbing mess on her when she was done hehsjbdg)

around the same time, they found out they were gonna have al and their life sorta shifted to preparing for that (jim got an easy office job for the psychonauts and has been working there since then, they saved money towards being able to take care of her etc.)

they were married for a solid few years (and only divorced because jim realized that he's gay,) and they still keep close contact and care for eachother and their daughter a lot !!! and al loves her parents :)c

I monch on abusive Bruce content spreading on main from last night but suddenly I crave violently protective parent Bruce as well 😭 like, can you imagine him realizing his 15 or so yo ward is missing when they went to some snobbish charity gala and Bruce got too distractes with people and then he finds him pressed to the wall behind bathrooms by drunken perv?? Dick's pupils bliwn wide, his head lolling uselesslly even though he's trying to fight whatever he was drugged with, his brave boy? just Bruce in absolute blind rage feeling murderous

Tbh I hc that so many of things like that happend to Dick and not others because on Dick Bruce was learning how to parent in general and that kids, no matter how brave and strong, need protection at all cost + with every new kid there was another big sibling to protect them

God YES to all of this! Bruce beating the guy to a PULP, not caring about his image. Bruce being suddenly reminded how he could lose Dick, in any way. Bruce trying to comfort Dick but failing miserably because he doesn't know how to comfort a child. Bruce feeling guilty over how he raised Dick and vowing not to commit the same mistakes with the others. Bruce being obsessively protective of Dick because he always feels like he is not doing enough.

I think they would def have a very strained relationship as Dick becomes older and starts wanting to be his own hero, because Bruce is overprotective and refuses to let him out of sight while also regularly pushing him away from the whole hero thing in an attempt to protect him. They would def reconcile when Dick becomes an adult, in part because Dick has his own life now but also because Bruce is getting better at being a parent.

Dad Vader - Padme

First of all, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! This is my last comparison for Dad Vader! I pondered on what to end on, but there is no better concluding topic than the woman who haunts Vader/Anakin and Luke's mom: Padme.

Both Vaders remember Padme fondly as expected. There are also occasions where Vader and Luke talk about Padme, sentimental in both fics. Both Vaders also mention frequently how much they see Padme in Luke. However, there are some glaring differences between the two Vaders that I will try to articulate. I think it might be easier to start with Rod!Vader

Rod!Vader: Surprisingly, Padme's name is only mentioned about 6 times in the entire fic! And it is only done towards the end of the fic. Vader and Luke go on an outing, meant to reconcile their relationship, to a planet where Vader and Padme have happy memories. Vader talks about his late wife after Luke begs to learn about her. I brought this up in a previous post, but this moment shows how willing Vader is to show his love for Luke despite the pain of Padme's memory. It's a very emotional discussion, and I got the feeling that Vader loves Luke as a separate being from Padme. I feel this way because of how fierce Vader is about loving Luke despite Padme dying from childbirth. What I am getting at is that Vader loves Luke because he is HIS child, not just because he is Padme's child if that makes sense. What I also like about this talk is that we see the conflict in the relationship when Vader admits that Padme did not support the idea of the empire. Padme is not just remembered with entirely rose-tinted glasses and it speaks to Vader's honesty that he can admit that he and his wife would have clashed with their current political beliefs. Nevertheless, from the moment where Luke first sees his mom in Vader's memory to this beach moment, Luke sees and hears about his parents' love for each other. Vader never uses Padme to manipulate Luke from what I recall. Padme is put on a pedestal but her memory is kept pure and angelic.

LLOM!Vader: This Vader is a bit more...disturbing. He reflects on Padme way more than Rod!Vader (Padme's name appears in the fic over 100 times). It's nice that he thinks of Padme more than Rod!Vader, but it is frustrating how little he shares with Luke. Vader first talks with Luke about Padme right before Luke's birthday/coronation and he only mentions that the necklace (pendant?) he is giving Luke was first gifted to Padme. Luke first learns about his mother, not from his father, but from his aunt and cousins (Padme's family). That's really sad, especially considering Vader responds when Luke angrily brings this up by spewing sentiments about Padme's family that seem like half-truths at best and gaslighting at worst. Vader's love for Padme is also challenged in this fic. I can't say what Rod!Vader would have done to Padme's family, but what man slays the remaining family of the woman he loves? This is his last link to Padme (people who knew her anyway). Given his obsession, maybe brainwashing would have been a cleaner solution. Plus, Sabe hints at an abusive relationship between the couple. It's ambiguous whether Sabe is just being biased or Anakin was actually intentionally hurting Padme (my anidala heart can't believe this) but it makes me think of men who obsess over their wives/girlfriends, treat them like trophies to be worshipped, but treat them like crap when triggered.

Anyway, what disturbs me most about this Vader is how Padme and Luke almost seem to blur together in his mind. Any coincidence that Vader more freely talks about Padme once Luke is mindwiped and being groomed into being a mini-Padme? If Vader was not the guy he was, I would worry that Vader would take the cross-dressing to another level and molest Luke. In Vader's mind, Padme was a perfect being who would find no fault in how he is hurting Luke. As far as Vader is concerned, robbing Luke of his agency and putting Luke in her dresses, is honouring Padme's legacy. The poor woman must be rolling in her grave.

Note: Sorry about the length of LLOM!Vader. The ending chapter of LLOM which featured cross-dressing Luke in Padme's outfits really disgusted me. Rod!Vader definitely wins here. I wish there were more mentions of Padme in Rod but I am satisfied with how Padme was handled in that fic. The picture of Anidala's marriage in Rod seems a lot healthier, whereas Padme's memory in LLOM feels warped and sullied.

Conclusion: Thanks for reading my comparisons and going on this journey with me! It's amazing how easy it is to analyze stories I actually like reading compared to my difficulty in literature and English classes at school. I did love reading these fics and I hope it helps anyone else who wants to write a similar Dad!Vader story. Maybe next time make the story a bit healthier though T~T. I would like to enjoy a story about Vader/Anakin doting on Luke without all these dark and abusive elements, please!

My trauma anniversary is coming up really soon (in 19 days—which also happens to coincide with him being a year and 19 days older than me), it’ll be five years on March 7th. I can’t stop thinking about my abuser. I’m obsessed with him. I don’t know how to reconcile the two parts of me—the twelve year old boy who still loves him and the seventeen year old who is terrified of him and hates him. It’s like the little kid inside me slips through the cracks and fills me up with the same feelings I had. As much as I hate to admit it, I miss him. I want to go back to him. I want to see him. I want to turn back time to when he wanted me. To when he was there, even if he really wasn’t. I don’t know what to do. Or why I feel this way. I literally can’t stop fucking thinking about him. I just hit a new high (or low, depending on your perspective) of obsession. I don’t even remember how I got there but I found myself looking at his school’s student directory from a couple years ago (he goes to one of the other schools in my district) and staring at his name, phone number and address. I went and looked it up on my phone because I wanted to see how far away it was from my house, then I’m pretty sure I saw that his parents had sold his dad’s apartment in 2021. I know he lives in the same suburb as me, if his mom’s house has stayed the same (his parents are divorced), then it’s about a mile away from my house. So I live in constant fear and on high alert wherever I go. I feel like a stalker or something, but I swear I’m not. I wouldn’t go scout it out or anything. Now, I want to go to his school just so I could have the possibility of seeing him. I have this problem with intentionally triggering myself, I do it a lot. I’ve been listening to music I used to listen to when I was friends with him. I don’t feel like he hurt me anymore, or at least, right now I don’t. I feel like the part of me that still cares about him has taken over. I have BPD and he used to be my FP, as horrible that is to admit. I feel like I’m somehow slipping back into that mindset of desperation and obsession like when I was younger. I don’t know what to do. It always gets bad near the anniversary, I can’t stop thinking about it. And the fact that it’ll have been five full years is baffling to me. In my head, not a day has passed. He is still the same as he was when I knew him. I know for a fact he looks different now but in my mind, I still see him as the thirteen year old he was, even in dreams (even though he’s literally an adult now, he’s 18). I feel like I’m stuck in the past and it’s grip just gets tighter when I try to break free. I don’t even know if I want to be free. Sometimes all I want is to forget. Sometimes all I want is to remember. Trauma is so fucking confusing and sometimes I feel like it’s tearing me apart. I can’t reconcile the two opposite sides of me (as is true with nearly everything because I have BPD) and I just don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to stop myself from obsessing over my trauma or my abuser. I’m still attached to him, as much as I dislike it. A part of me loves him, wants to come crawling back to him, beg him to speak to me and hurt me like he did then. I feel like a mix of me then and me now, but a confusing, paradoxical mix. I feel like I’m grasping for things that aren’t there, parts of me that don’t exist and being consumed by the past as it seeps into the present until it bleeds together like a watercolor painting. Why do I feel like this? Nothing makes sense. I’m sorry if this also doesn’t make sense, I tried my best to describe it as coherently as possible.

I just forgot to mention that I’m struggling with also wanting to reach out to my abuser. I know that this time of year is always especially difficult for me and always makes my PTSD worse and near constant rumination regarding either my trauma or my abuser. It’s extremely difficult but I hope it might possibly reassure you to know I am hopefully seeing both my therapists in the two days following the anniversary and also the anniversary will be on a school day so I might have that to distract me but I honestly don’t know how much it’ll help, but at least I have therapy.

It's okay to have mixed feelings about your abuser. As for almost wishing for it to be how it was, there are a few reasons why someone might feel this way. One of these reasons may be that there is a sense of comfort in the predictability of that toxic environment, whereas safety is disorienting.

Another reason might be for self-triggering purposes, wanting to be hurt, perhaps to feel alive. I always say that trauma often sets a precedent that every other experience falls under, which can make your life feel incredibly dull when you're not indulging in things that put you in survival mode or whatnot.

I think something you may resonate with as well is that you might miss the affection that your abuser provided, as superficial as it may have been. It's possible that this is related to some potential trauma bonding.

What you said about the twelve year old boy who still loves him reminded me of Internal Family Systems and its concepts of parts and their ages. You may find that video interesting.

You're not alone in doing research into your abuser. I paid to see public records, addresses, relatives, phone numbers, emails, places of work, criminal records, even info regarding properties him and his family owned. It's not like I have plans with any of this information and I don't even completely understand why it matters so much to me, outside of finding out the extent of my abuser's lies. But even then, I don't know why I feel like I must know what he lied about (closure?). Either way, this doesn't make you and I stalkers by any means. Looking up publicly available information or subscribing to Truthfinder doesn't constitute as stalking, at least in a legal sense. It's one thing to keep these things to yourself, and it's another to actually go out and harass them.

I also resonate with your trauma feeling more recent than it actually is. For me it's been 8 years, and yet the events are fresher than the ones afterwards. This is simply the nature of trauma and PTSD. I don't know if it actually works like this (I think it does) but the more you think about something, you strengthen that neural pathway. So I for example have thought about my trauma much more than the events before and after it, so the neural networks are much stronger in that interval, whereas both before and after are much weaker.

I also strongly relate to your abuser remaining static in your head, as opposed to aging or updating. There are multiple versions of my abuser in my head - the one I knew him as (a skinny 16 year old), the one before his accident (who I believe was still definitely abusive), and the one after his accident (most up-to-date, unsure whether or not he's even capable of abuse anymore). The youngest version of him is often the one that appears in my dreams, though recently it seems to be updating. I believe there is a name for this, and it's called parataxic distortion.

There's a latin word called cacospectamania which is basically the inability to look away from something awful and I think you may also resonate with that in terms of trying to heal from trauma.

Another term I use which I think loosely ties into this obsession with your abuser is mythologization wherein we give our abusers an almost mythological amount of power, a supervillain persona, etc.

Ultimately it may just take time to work through these feelings and come to a new consensus within yourself, you know? Healing takes time. I think it's important to write out what you're experiencing as it can help you make sense of it and process it. I don't know if you keep a journal, but you may find that useful in your recovery journey. Additionally, I don't know if you're in therapy, but I would recommend that as well, especially as a trauma survivor.

I'm glad to hear you're in therapy. I think they can definitely help you with all of these things, especially the urge to contact your abuser. It's important to keep that door closed, and explore those urges to ensure you don't end up in a dangerous situation.

a long rambly discussion on alador and odalia

a small warning before i begin i will be briefly mentioning emotional abuse and neglect carried out by the blight parents. it’s nothing worse than what’s portrayed in the actual show, but just a warning if you don’t want to read that :)

also spoiler warning for clouds in the horizon and all of season 2 of toh

theorizing that odalia and alador only married for financial gain, and not for love. something really interesting that i noticed that episode is that they were referring to each other as if they were financial partners, and not a married couple. part of this could be that they’ve just completely fallen out of love, but i’d think it would be really possible that they were never in love. from the moment they were introduced, they never seemed very couple-y. and given odalia’s obsession for wealth and power, i wouldn’t be surprised if she manipulated alador into marrying her.

i mean, they are really solid business partners. she doesn’t have the means to invent things, but she is a ruthless saleswoman. and alador doesn’t seem to be as motivated or skilled in marketing, but he’s extremely smart and skilled as an inventor. given odalia’s oracle powers i really wouldn’t be surprised if she had mind controlled or manipulated or something’ed alador so she could gain the financial benefits that could come from his inventions.

it’s also so fascinating how we see alador genuinely care for his kids, and we also see that his kids (amity at least) trust him to a certain degree. this doesn’t excuse or cancel out the emotional neglect he carried out for so long, or how he aided odalia’s abuse and refused to step in and intervene until the consequence was literally murder (escaping expulsion). this behavior is never excusable. however comma, it’s interesting seeing his character arch, and seeing how he’s growing and trying to be a better father. and he’s doing that through his actions, not his words. freeing the gang from odalia’s force field prison thing. shutting off his abominations. offering to pilot a coven ship to help save (who they then thought was hunter). making an effort to make (who they then thought was luz) to feel welcomed by him, + therefore amity’s family, after odalia was just. being a total and complete bitch.

speaking of odalia, it’s really fascinating how her character arc completely juxtaposes alador’s. while over season two, we’ve seen small moments of alador growing, and clearly showing regret over his actions, or moments of compassion or realization in regards to his children, we see none of that for odalia. we actually see her become LESS CARING THAN SHE ALREADY WAS. for example, in reaching out, upon learning that amity was dating luz, this is a moment of realization for alador. he’s surprised, but he’s surprised because this makes him realize how little he’s actually been there for his children. and he responds respectfully. he doesn’t alienate luz from the family because she’s wanted or a human. and upon realizing how little he’s actually spent with his children, he attempts to reconcile with amity. and although she doesn’t necessarily forgive him, she also shows that she’s beginning to trust him, because his actions speak volumes.

additionally, while alador was trying to force amity to go to coven try outs that entire time, rather than continuing to force her, he actually makes the effort to why she doesn’t want to. he actually TRIES to understand.

odalia, in comparison. we have never seen her even attempt to make a connection or understanding with amity or the twins. she either forces things on them, or accuses them of things and refuses to hear them out. upon capturing everyone, odalia incessantly accuses amity, placing her own perception of amity’s actions onto amity. she never asks amity any questions, or if she does it’s in the way that people ask questions accusatorily, where they don’t actually want an answer. when amity does try to explain herself, odalia shuts her down and doesn’t take her seriously. upon odalia learning that amity is dating luz, she doesn’t stop to think about how her daughter is. you know. growing up and going for life. and odalia hasn’t stopped to be there for any of it. she hasn’t made time for her children. she doesn’t realize how shitty this is of her, like alador did. instead she’s just seething with rage because luz is wanted. i would say also because luz is a human, which may have been true earlier in the series, but i think luz has more than proved herself to everyone on the boiling isles just how strong she is. so i don’t think luz being a human is much of an issue for odalia at that point. just, you know, that she’s “wanted” and odalia probably perceives her of being a bad influence on amity.

additionally, it’s fascinating to me how odalia responds with “we’ll get you another girlfriend.” This is coming from a complete disregard for amity’s emotions. amity isn’t dating luz just because amity wants a girlfriend. amity isn’t dating luz to act out or rebel. amity is dating luz because amity loves luz, and cares about luz. we’ve seen throughout the show how much development they’ve gone through and also how much work they’ve both put into their relationship, and how much they both care about each other. amity wouldn’t want another girlfriend if something happened to luz.

this shows the complete disregard that odalia has for amity’s emotions. she learned something really significant about her daughter. her daughter has a girlfriend. her daughter is growing up. and while alador had this moment of realization that he hadn’t been there for his children. and this prompted him to make an effort to try to reconcile with amity, and he asks her questions and supports her, odalia never does this.

offering to find amity another girlfriend also shows that odalia does not view relationships as something one does for love. she views relationships as something that one does for some sort of gain. it’s also fascinating how it seems her primary issue with luz is her reputation. luz is strong, and a powerful witch at this point in the show, and she’s demonstrated that she’s a powerful witch to pretty much everyone. but odalia seems completely disgusted by the fact that luz is on a wanted list. luz also does not come from a “respectable” position, seeing as luz is associated with eda. It can be presumed that odalia holds very little respect for eda, as eda never joined a coven, and despite being extremely powerful and skilled before her magic got taken away, she never used that skill and power to gain herself a position of power. she lives in a small house in the woods that very few people can enter due to a scary owl. we saw in season 1 just how powerful she is with her magic. from odalia’s perspective (even though we know this is not true, due to how her curse effected her), eda could have very easily gained some sort of social status in the boiling isles (other than being Eda the Owl Lady, of course).

but eda sells goods at (possibly?) illegal markets. she is secluded. she has the talents that she could very much make a name for herself, especially if she joined a coven (again, from odalia’s perspective). eda recognizes the coven systems are oppressive. additionally, the potions eda NEEDS to help her curse are financially inaccessible, which causes eda to need to sell and scam and steal, in order to afford the healthcare and medication the potions that she needs in order to help her mental health her curse. odalia doesn’t know this. if she did she probably wouldn’t care, but still.

odalia sees eda as someone who chooses not to have power, even though she should. and it is true that eda seems to not personally care about her social reputation, besides being proud of how formidable she is perceived. i don’t think it needs to be said how much this goes against odalia’s personal beliefs. and due to the fact that luz is eda’s kid, odalia associates her beliefs of eda with luz as well. which again, isn’t completely wrong, luz does not seem to necessarily care too much about social status. while a major part of her arc is feeling alienated in the human world because she doesn’t fit in, she never tries to force herself to change in order to fit in. in being in the boiling isles, she has major insecurities about not fitting in. and the boiling isles is a place where, inherently, she does not fit in. she’s a human. magic does not come naturally to her. however, she finds people who she does fit in with, and she fits in with them by being herself. she doesn’t care if she’s popular or of high social status at school. she finds community and friends and people who care about her, something she never really seemed to have in the human world. her insecurities still exist, but it’s not about finding greater social status, it’s her worrying about acceptance from other people.

odalia could not care less about finding community and friends and acceptance. she is someone who very clearly only thinks about status. and the fact that a) luz does not care about status and b) does not necessarily have high social status makes odalia think luz is an unfit girlfriend for amity.

it’s also evident in this exchange just how controlling odalia is. before this episode we saw a lot of odalia being controlling in smaller but still really weird awful ways. controlling her children’s hair color. wanting her children to be perfect. forcing her children to help out with selling the abomitons. having a necklace that allows her to speak telepathically with other’s wearing the necklace. all of this is controlling, but only preludes all the things we learned about her in this episode. she thinks she could just choose who amity’s girlfriend would be. it’s clear she has some form of influence over alador. she does things that alador should have a say in without consulting him. she overworks alador, and doesn’t think twice or care about it. he “hasn’t had a weekend off in five years.” which is insane i’m not even gonna get into the really interesting dynamics of her as a business person, a boss, upper management, etc, and the way that she clearly abuses workers and those she deems beneath her. (her beratement of kikimora only once kikimora is demoted to a position “lower” than odalia’s. her overworking of alador. her firing workers with seemingly little warning, which likely put these workers in financially unideal or even dangerous/risky situations. i don’t know what kind of welfare support the boiling isles offers to the unemployed. presumably not really any. wait i’m actually really curious about this now. i won’t get into that but maybe in the future).

the owl house has a lot of commentary on capitalism, or at least abuses that occur under a capitalistic system. i won’t get into that cos this post is already way too long, but it!! is!! fascinating!!

i also have lost my train of thought so i will not continue i can’t remember how i was going to conclude this post but uh you get what i mean.

THE TOP THREE HEROES ARE ALL FAILURES

In the sense that Enjdeavor, Hawks, and Jeanist all embody the failures of the hero system. The first clear sign that all three people who were set to inherit All Might’s Legacy would fail in doing so, is that none of them really understood what kind of hero was in the first place.

Endeavor only ever saw All Might’s Strength, and thought All Might’s genuine desire to save people was just him playing to the crowd. Hawks thought Endeavor’s desire to surpass All Might was heroic, and what made him a better hero because he didn’t give up when everybody else said it was hopeless, but we the audience know Endeavor gave up early and took it out on his family instead. Best Jeanist thinks what’s most important of all isn’t saving people but rather “The Image” of Heroes to the public. Except, the only reason All Might was a hero obsessed with image is because he wanted even those he could not reach to be able to live in peace and save themselves.

The top three heroes are all lacking in what All Might had, in that none of them actually believe that Heroes should save people. Enji believes in strength above all else, Hawks in sacrificing one’s self for the faceless masses, and Best Jeanist in the image of heroes to the public.

It’s really showing that the option of “Saving Dabi” did not even occur to them once, despite the fact that they are completely willing to give a helping hand to the man who made Dabi.

The current number one, two and three heroes are all obsessed with All Might’s Legacy, however all of them are failures to All Might’s Legacy as well because they don’t understand the underlying ideal of heroes saving people. All three of them represent the failures of hero society, which is why they aren’t shown being overly concerned at hero society’s victims. Even when it’s revealed that one of hero society’s greatest villains Dabi, was actually one of hero society’s greatest victims too, created by one of their own, their beliefs barely change.

1. Enji Todoroki

Enji was never concerned with saving others being the job of a hero. His one and only focus was just to be the strongest. He even has a shallow view of All Might’s ideals and goals because of this. He thinks the reason that All Might won number one was because 1) his all powerful strength and 2) his popularity with people.

Enji never once mentions that All Might became the hero he was, because his number one priority in every situation was to save as many people as he could. Because, Enji doesn’t view it as the job of heroes to save others.

Toshinori worked so hard because he genuinely wanted to be the shining light for others. He didn’t become the number one hero because it was his own personal dream, but rather because it was others needed of him. All Might isn’t a perfect hero either, but there’s still a difference between someone who wanted the number one spot because he genuinely thought it would save the most people, and someone who wanted the number one spot because he wanted to be the strongest.

Even after Endeavor’s supposed revelation where he saw Shoto being gentle with flames, rather than forceful and violence, Enji became the exact same kind of hero he was before.

Think of the way Enji fought Shigaraki, burning him alive. He made several attempts to kill him during their fight, even though the rule is heroes absolutely must not kill, that’s what makes them different from villains. Heroes prioritize the safety of people, and saving civilians, except for Endeavor apparently. Endeavor as a hero is the exact same kind of hero he was before, and the flaw with that is if he had fought Dabi the same way he had fought Shigaraki.

He would have burned his own son alive. Enji isn’t even concerned in the least with saving people, even when the person most in need of saving is his own son. He sees villains as an absolute evil for him to punch and beat up in order to prove his own strength. The only way Enji knows how to be a hero is violently taking down crime and no one has ever challenged this, even though it’s the exact attitude that led Toya to his death.

Enji, only ever taught Dabi how to turn up the heat, because Enji wasn’t actually that concerned with his son’s well being. Toya was only worth something to him when he was strong, so Enji only ever taught Toya how to be the strongest hero and nothing else that a father should teach his son. Even now, Enji doesn’t let go of this idea of his that he has to be the number one hero, and being the strongest hero will solve all of his problems.

Endeavor has used playing hero again and again as an excuse to run away. Now that Hawks is giving him another chance to be hero, he’s enabling him to run away again.

It’s incredible how still even after the reveal, it’s always Toya who has to pay for the consequences of Endeavor’s mistakes. Toya is left alone to burn to death and spends the rest of his life covered in burns forgotten by his father, and it’s Endeavor who gets the unconditional support and love Toya needed as a child offered to him, just because he happened to be a hero. If he was a villain he would have just been locked up.

Endeavor is framed as the hero who does not give up, and yet, he very easily runs away and lets Toya take the blame for the majority of his actions. If Toya had been able to carry his dream he would not have abused Shoto. If Toya had not died that day he would not have doubled down even harder on Shoto. Toya’s the reason they could not come together as a family. It’s never Endeavor’s actions, it’s always, somehow, Toya who is blamed, and Toya who is burned as the consequence of Endeavor’s actions. Now, Toya is the one who needs to be stopped when Enji is just as guilty.

I’m not saying that Enji should not be given a chance to get better, but why is the good side of Enji’s actions expressed over and over again and not Toya’s? Toya is trying to reform all of society. Toya is trying to hold his dad accountable for abusing him and neglecting him to the point that he died. That’s murder. Someone who lets their children die because they couldn’t be bothered to supervise them can be charged with involuntary manslaughter in a court of law. Enji has killed too, but rather than admit to his own flaws it’s must easier to cast Toya s the villain that needs to be stopped and himself as the hero that needs everyone’s support.

Toya deserves the same chance that Enji got.

2. Hawks

Hawks only saw self sacrifice in All Might’s actions. He saw someone harming himself over and over again for the sake of others, and that’s probably why he admired Enji’s pursuit of strength more because it was the opposite of him.

If Enji is the extreme result of the attitude that villains can’t be saved, only stopped by putting themselves down with violence, then Hawks is the extreme result of self sacrifice. Hawks seems like the ideal hero on paper, he would do anything, and give up any part of himself to save a faceless stranger just like All Might. However, Hawks also has decided that he has the right to sacrifice others as well.

Hawks is self-destructive. That’s the extreme end of self sacrifice. However, unlike All Might who took the burden entirely on himself, Hawks will choose others to sacrifice as well. If Hawks sees himself as a tool for the greater good he will extend that to others as well. If Hawks sees himself as a bad victim who turned his back on their parents, he extends that to others as well.

So basically, Hawks’ number one problem is with himself. He can’t reconcile his past. He feels guilty for being abused by his parents. He feels guilty for not forgiving the same abusive parents. He puts everything he has into being a hero, and yet, he doesn’t feel like he himself is a hero. Hawks’ only way he knows to feel good about himself is to continuously sacrifice himself for the sake of others.

Because he learned when he was young the only way to be good was by sacrificing himself to protect others. He only received the help he needs because he showed he was “one of the good victims” but deep down internally he feels like he’s the bad one, for not being able to do anything for his mother, for not reaching out to her.

Hawks can’t see himself as a victim and it messes with the way he sees other victims as well. He divides them into good and bad, and then tells himself that he’ll offer to help the good ones, the ones willing to improve. Hawks’ represents Hero Society’s own willingness to throw the bad victims to the dogs.

It’s specifically Hawks who Twice calls this out on. So we have a number one hero who thinks the only way to deal with villains is to violently suppress them, and the number two hero that thinks the only people who deserve to be saved is the ones he deems as “Good” or “Trying to be better.”

It’s all because Hawks has this really self destructive idea of what kindness is. That kindness is somehow destroying yourself for the sake of others, that it’s being overly forgiving and not holding any resentment at all.

It’s like how Deku acts like forgiving his father is a kind act. However, at the same time implying that holding onto resentment would be an unkind one.

Even though the reason Natsuo won’t forgive is because Toya is dead, and Enji never showed any apparent remorse for it, and didn’t try to fix anything. Even though one son died because of Enji’s training, and then Enji just decided to train the one remaining son he had left a thousand times harder. Natsuo is attempting to hold his father accountable for his actions, but Deku acts like blanket forgiveness would be the kind thing to do.

Even though Deku himself is willing to overlook all of Enji’s past abuse of Shoto, and his murder of Toya, but at the same time stresses how unforgivable Toya and Shigaraki are.

Deku just saves people in a self destructive way. He breaks his bones to save others, thus mirroring Hawks who just saves people without genuinely thinking through who needs to be saved. They save people, because that’s the way they hurt themselves to prove how useful they are. However, neither of them actually goes through the trouble of thinking who genuinely needs saving, and that’s why they’re able to carry such a false double standard. Enji needs help because he’s trying to be better, whereas Toya’s not trying to be better. Ignoring the fact that you know, Enji tries to be better by just, forgetting everything he did in the past and sweeping his past actions under the rug, whereas Toya is still suffering from the scars of Enji’s abuse, permanently on his body.

However, between Twice a person willing to die to protect his friends and act of complete selflessness, and Enji who can’t even bring himself to think that maybe he should try to save the son he let burn to death on a mountain peak which one do you think was trying to be better? Enji who spent ten years, even after Toya had already died to his training, training up Shoto instead even harsher. Enji who referred to Toya as “a failure” and “almost perfect” when talking to Shoto about his death.

“I’m going to help anyone trying to be better” is just an arbitrary line that Hawks draws.

That’s even the critique that Twice levelled at Hawks. Hawks doesn’t care because he never actually tried to see the good sides of the other people, but Toga was someone who comfotred Twice and understood him. Toga was someone who made the league feel like home. Hawks labels Twice as the only good one, because he just didn’t bother to see what was good about the other villains. Yet, at the same time he strains himself to see the good in Endeavor, to the point where he constantly apologizes for Endeavor’s actions and sweeps them under the rug. Endeavor is a good man who is just misunderstood in Hawks’ eyes, who just went wrong somewhere, but Hawks can’t ever offer up the same sympathy to the worst victims of society. Who lash out and hurt other people in the same way that Endeavor did, except Endeavor’s is excusable and there’s isn’t because...???

Hawks is in denial, because he refuses to look at the good sides of the villains. Twice didn’t choose to accept his offer of help, so obviously he didn’t want to be better, therefore Hawks is perfectly justified in putting him down. Notice though how Hawks mentioned prison time for Jin, but not for Enji (neglecting a child to the point where they burn to death is... still a crime).

Hawks is still in denial about himself. He thinks he’s offering people a helping hand. However, from Jin’s perspective we see how manipulative he is. Hawks didn’t offer Jin a hand, he held him at gunpoint and told him to surrender and betray his friends. Hawks is just lying to himself, because he didn’t go out of his way to save Jin, he ruthlessly manipulated him, and then betrayed him. He’s not framed as a hero trying desperately to save a villain, but rather a friend betraying another friend who trusted him. Because, Hawks does not just sacrifice himself. He’s the extreme result of self sacrifice. Self sacrifice turns into self destruction. Self denial. Hawks sacrifices other people. He forces himself to dirty his hands, because he believes this is the only way he can be a hero. He’s too weak individually, so he has to manipulate, pull strings, and even kill in order to achieve the results he thinks will save the most people. However, by doing that he ignores the suffering of the victims right in front of them.

Not only that, but he ignores what contradicts his simple black and white narrative. Enji was trying to be better so he deserves help and support, Twice didn’t want to be better so Hawks revoked his offer of support away.

He’s willing to give support to a man who abused his family for no good reason, and who continues to evade any consequences or legal punishment for his actions, but then insists that Jin who was pushed to his actions by poverty and not wanting to starve to death just did not want to be better. He’s like, so unaware of what the problem actually is with society, he can’t possibly think why Enji leaving his own son to burn to death might have left his son a bit miffed. Enji is just a person who made a few missteps along the way but genuinely wants to be good, Dabi is just a selfish person who doesn’t want to be better, so says Hawks.

Nevermind how hard Toya tried to be a hero, and how he never gave up on earning his father’s love. Nevermind how hard Twice tried to be helpful to other, and how much he loved the people around him he was willing to sacrifice his life. Twice’s last action was to save his two closest friends. Enji’s actions are always just to beat up villains to prove how strong he is. Enji is never concerned with anyone. Hawks does want to save people, but he never thinks about the people who need to be saved.

Therefore, heroes are always good. Even when heroes do bad things, Hawks contrives some way to not hold them responsible for it ever. Well, Enji isn’t like that now. Well, we don’t need to announce that Enji was an abuser, because that will just upset the public.

The actions of Enji are apologized for over and over again. Because rather than holding him accountable for his actions. Instead of pushing him to actually fix his mistakes, it’s better to keep sweeping the problem under the rug. Because, as is repeated again and again heroes don’t save people. When a hero fails to save someone, rather than trying to fix that mistake it’s easier to blame the person who didn’t get saved.

Even if it was your own son that you left to burn to death. That is somehow miraculously alive. That has given you a second chance to save the person you should have saved that day by just, showing up, and actually acting like a father for once.

Enji will just choose his job over and over again. Because heroes don’t actually have a responsibility to save people. Being hero is just a job. Enji, Hawks, Jeanist they consider it a profession, not a responsibility. Which is why all three of them are willing to blame Dabi for his own actions, but not Endeavor for his. Which, just proves Dabi right.

Heroes aren’t actually concerned with saving people. Heroes don’t think about who is most in need of saving, and who the real victims are. Heroes just protect their own.

Enji, Hawks and Dabi are all murderers. They have all killed someone in pursuit of their goal. Not only did Enji murder a child by neglect, he also tried to kill Shigaraki several times over, and even tried to murder Pop Step in vigilantes. Hawks killed Twice in pursuit of a goal.

However, Hawks and Enji need to be supported, whereas Toya needs to be stopped. Because they are heroes, and Dabi is a villain. But sure, watch Dabi continually burn his own body over and over again and push himself to the very limit so he can achieve a society where another hero will never get away with abusing his family like Enji did his, and say that he doesn’t want to be good. Watch Toya burn himself over and over again as a child just trying to be a hero because he thinks it’s the only way to earn his father’s love, because he genuinely looked up to his father and wanted to be just like him, and insist that Toya just stopped trying to be better, that he was just a jealous child, that he was never good.

Jeanist isn’t a fully developed character so I’m not going to talk about him as much, but he represents the attitude that heroes “only pretend to save people” because they fuss ove image, rather than doing the actual work of helping victims.

The thing is someone who is genuinely trying to be better would listen to Dabi’s words, to Shigaraki’s words. However, Jeanist, Hawks, Enji all think of themselves as the hero, therefore they assume they are good and that their actions are good.

Whenever someone contradicts this, they just flat out ignore any criticism. Heroes don’t save people. Heroes just protect their own image as heroes, because they assume that’s what is necessary for peace. Even now, Hawks and Jeanist aren’t focused on the innocent people suffering from the victim break outs, but rather taking down the man out to ruin their reputations.

They pretend to see those they haven’t protected. Even when that person is Endeavor’s own son, his pain gets swept under the rug, because the image of Endeavor as a shining hero is far more important than the responsibility he has to help his own son, that’s in pain and need to saving.
