Just finished reading Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
"I don't get why this book is rated so highly," I thought. "It's obvious that there's only one suspect left. Also even if it turns out to be someone else, none of these choices are unlikely."
And then I got to the end.
What.
Whut.
What???????
BUT I WAS ALSO THINKING THE SAME THING LIKE Y'KNOW WHO DID HAVE ALL THE OPPORTUNITY SKILL AND NO REAL ALIBI THAT STANDS UP TO SCRUTINY?? BUT OF COURSE IT OBVIOUSLY IT COULDN'T BE THEM BECAUSE...BUT APPARENTLY IT WAS THEM PRECISELY BECAUSE AND WHAT THE FUCK????
Somebody was like, the thing about a whodunit is that readers like to be tricked, not conned. I feel like this should be a con because NOT FUCKING FAIR HOW WOULD WE HAVE SEEN THAT COMING and yet I still only feel tricked.
Agatha Christie you brilliant bitch.

He taps his login details into his keyboard and sighs as the computer fans whir increasingly louder, clearly displeased that he had the sheer audacity to cause micro-mechanical warfare by requesting the dusty machine do its job.

A Year in Book Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
#28 - The Hollow by Agatha Christie
Mystery / Hercule Poirot #25 / 272 pages / published 1946 / Finished Feb. 28
One Sentence Review: A riveting mystery steeped with family drama and filled with plausible suspects, this Poirot book starts out slow but builds itself into a captivating read that shows that sometimes the victim may seem more of a villain than the killer.
Favorite Quotes
"It wasn’t the circumstances of life they enjoyed, it was life itself - the zest of existence."
*
"Gerda had loved John terribly, but she didn't want to love him for what he was. She built up a pedestal for him and attributed every splendid and noble and unselfish characteristic to him. And if you cast down an idol, there's nothing left."
*
"The past is sometimes a very good place to live."
*
"To the scientific mind, truth comes first. Truth, however bitter, can be accepted, and woven into a design for living."
*
"I am a worker. That's just why being comfortable is so attractive."
My rating: 4/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers):
It was a wild ride! Agatha Christie has this phenomenal way of surprising me with every single one of her books, and this was no exception. I absolutely did not see the ending coming. It was a bit hard to get into at first, as it was rather slow, but once it got going, I was hooked.
I was shocked at the reveal that the one person who seemed to be guilt-free from the beginning was actually the killer. After all, there's no way the person that's most obvious, who was found standing over the body with a gun, actually did it, right? Wrong! Gerda framed herself!
Even good, decent people can be pushed over the edge if they themselves are pushed enough. The world is not black and white; sometimes the victim seems more like the villain than the actual killer.
