To the person who sent me the thousand word essay, if you check out my ask policy I don't publish these kinds of long asks. I used to get tons of them and it got to be too much. Also, a lot of your comments contain anti talking points that I will not publish on my blog. But I can respond to some of the issues you raised.
TW/CW - brief mention of homophobia and suicide.
Basically your message was a sort of cataloguing of your doubts about BJYXSZD. To quote your closing paragraph, "Ah....i am just desperate for them to be a couple after all these months and the bts videos and inteviews, but it just doesn't add up anymore. So, as a confused fan, i thought about seeking reassurance to you."
I don't think it's my place, nor is it really anyone's place, to try to convince you or reassure you that GGDD is real. You will either believe or you won't believe. In my experience, people who are filled with doubts and in need of a steady stream of candies and clues to keep them satisfied are going to find themselves on a constant emotional roller-coaster of euphoria and misery.
Let go of your need for certainty.
As I've said in the past, when you let go of your need for certainty you will find that certainty comes a lot more easily. People who need certainty approach GGDD like a detective agency or a hungry ghost, focusing on their craving for proofs and candies that never quite seem to satiate them, and they miss out on the real joy of just being a fan.
A lot of the doubts you listed are things that don't really fit with why BXG believe BJYXSZD. We don't base our belief on the fact that they did a BL show together. We don't base our belief on the fact that they get along well together. We don't base our belief on candies. We base our belief on the insight we accumulate over a period of time, and that's not something that can be passed on to someone else. It's something everyone has to discover for themselves.
GGDD have nothing to prove. BXG have nothing to prove. We are all just here to enjoy them, love them and support them.
My advice: just relax, let go of your need for certainty, and enjoy GG and DD. Certainty will come or it won't, so there's no need to fret over it.
A couple things I felt the need to respond to:
Hidden relationships
Hidden relationships are totally a Thing in the entertainment industry, of course. Andy Lau with his 24 year hidden relationship is a great example. But you seem fixated on the idea that if GG or DD were hiding a relationship, it must be a heterosexual one.
Heteronormativity is a huge part of why so many fans have a hard time believing that GG and DD could ever be a real couple. There can be endless signs that a man is in a gay relationship and the fans will just dismiss it all, but if that man so much as smiles at a woman, fans are immediately ready to believe he's in love with her. Heterosexuality is seen as the default, and that makes homosexuality invisible to a lot of straight people.
You mentioned Leslie Cheung. I recommend this excellent post if you want to see why the world wasn't ready for him. He was an inspiration to LGBTQ people, without any doubt. I think he was equally a cautionary tale for a lot of people, even if the tragedy of his death wasn't necessarily directly related to his queerness or how he was being treated by the public.
There's a trope in society and in media and entertainment, that queer people are tragic figures. Queer characters are often presented as emotionally and psychologically turbulent people who meet untimely, tragic ends. Queer stories tend to be focused around "the struggle of being queer" and the rejection, fear and bigotry queer people face. The violence, the death, the suicides.
How could this not feed into the fears we have as queer people growing up in an often hostile world? How could a story like Leslie's fail to scare as many people as it inspires?
And besides, there are closeted gay couples in the entertainment industry in China.
I have talked about the whole hidden relationship thing, the whole 'needing to appear single' thing, in the past. You can find some of those posts linked at the end of this one. I've also talked about the pressure to appear single (along with the pressure to enter a straight marriage) previously here.
DD and the anti bullshit you've read
I can tell you've read a lot of anti lies in your travels. You're carrying a lot of the toxic ideas that antis spread online. I'm going to take a wild guess and say you spend most of your time on Twitter and YouTube, where these lies are part of the air people breathe on those platforms.
The rumors of DD being in a relationship with that heiress are nothing but harassment and bullshit. She is a known celebrity stalker who has caused scandals with multiple celebrities. Antis spread those lies because they are harmful to DD, not because they're true. DD denies them because they are false, not because he's got something to hide.
DD has never once been spotted with her. He's never once been photographed with her. There exists in the world exactly zero evidence of any common thread between her and DD. Zero evidence that they've ever even been in the same room together. Zero. There's no candy, nothing.
Meanwhile the candy connecting DD and GG together is so abundant it would put Willy Wonka out of business. There are constant reports of them being seen together, evidence of them being together, etc. Some of that stuff is stalker material that I won't share on my blog - such as DD's suitcase being spotted in GG's car a few days ago - but yeah, if you believe in the stalker heiress BS but not GGDD, that only speaks to your ignorance of the situation.
One of the things I find most frustrating about being a BJYXSZD BXG is that we are constantly characterized as spectacularly naive and deluded, meanwhile it's our most vocal critics - the antis, toxic solos and insecure turtles - who unquestioningly believe anything they read.
As for 22*7, you can always tell a DD anti by their willingness to claim DD should have spoken openly about GG during the whole scandal last year. No one who knows anything about GG and DD or about the situation could say in good faith that DD should have spoken up. I view that whole attitude as a litmus test for who knows and understands and truly supports GGDD, and who is either uninformed or an anti.

BJYXSZD is not based on old BTS and interviews
I sometimes get sick of seeing clips and photos and metas about the Untamed, I sometimes get tired of talking about the same old interview clips and BTS. I see these things as ancient history - something fun to visit every now and then, but not where I want to live. I don't base my present belief on any of that. All that stuff can ever really do now is give us background on how things started and give us a bit of insight into how they get along and interact.
No BXGSZD that I know of bases their belief on "old BTS and interviews."
Both GG and DD have interesting new projects and endorsements. There's a ton of new content coming out all the time. We still regularly see new evidence that they're together. The past stuff is just for context.
Wrapping this all up, I'll just reiterate what I said before. No one can, or even should, convince you that GGDD is real. That's something you'll have to make peace with for yourself. If you want to get there faster, just relax and enjoy being a fan, and take some time to learn more about GGDD. Certainty may come in time. If it doesn't, well at least you had fun!

after hearing that Michael Waldron said that season 2 will “subvert expectations” and “wont indulge in fanservice” or whatever it honestly makes me really nervous abt season 2. like i want it dont get me wrong, its just that waiting like 2 years to get and it and it ends up sucking is just a very real possibility. also i dont trust trust Michael Waldron so
Oh yes, I completely understand your feelings. I don't trust Michael Waldron as far as I could shove him, let alone as far as Hulk could throw him (ha). I personally have developed a habit of setting the bar for all writers incredibly low. Until we know one way or another about the next season from its actual content, or even hints from Strange's movie perhaps, we just get to enjoy what we did get on screen and everyone's amazing contributions to the fandom. So, I try not to speculate because then that develops expectations and yeah makes me nervous, too. 2 years is such a long wait. Imo it's best not to focus too much on looking ahead and just enjoy what we like about what we have now - and for those on other social media platforms, mayhaps try and show Marvel that, for all that that may or may not help our odds of future good content.
That said, I will totally analyze far beyond qualification to do so, if you're interested. Those quotes of Waldron's along with quite literally nearly everything else that's come out from bts and other interviews gives me the strong impression that 90% of what Mobius is comes from Owen...of which a very very high amount of that was conceived from him talking through Loki and the show and everything with Tom. Mobius and Loki seem to have been set up for a hybrid "Odd Couple"/"Outside Man, Inside Man" style dynamic, wherein Mobius was essentially a plot device, a "Paragon", to move necessary things along: Loki's non-love interest related character development moments, foreshadowing the variant reveal, the TVA's transition, and inspiring Old Loki's sacrifice.
He gets quite the burden of the plot put on himself for a character that the main writer obviously didn't expect to become a fan favorite, hence...plot device character. Just one big facilitator. Yet Owen saw the improvements that could be made for Mobius, Tom obviously supported him immensely and joined in, and Herron seems to have given them significant leeway on the set because she too could see the added value of these changes. From the quotes you mention, I really don't think Waldron liked how this shifted attention away from the moments of the script he liked most...which I get, but TV is a collaborative process...so that does make Herron's departure sad, because she sounds quite open to improv and creative collaboration on-set.
However, Anon, I'll try to offer some positivity for you! Even if Waldron returns as head writer (which we don't have confirmation for, and who knows where Strange's film will take us, so he may only stay on as executive producer after he goes over to write his Star Wars project), I cannot imagine Tom's executive producer status will change (and after this successful season, I don't think it's unreasonable that he would have slightly more influence...maybe 7% instead of 5% in the ideas department lol), and Feige did give that quote about predicting Loki and Mobius "will be one of the most popular pairings we’ve ever had at Marvel." Which was before the show even aired, iirc. And he seems to love Loki. So, we got what we got because Owen's changes were rightly seen as amazing by many others and Waldron isn't the sole decider in the room.

What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful?: My favorite story is probably ‘Over The Top’ with GOT7’s Bambam. It’s a dad!au about bam’s twin boys’ first birthday party. I’m quite attached to their family dynamic in the story and may even revisit twin terrors Somsak & Somchai in the future. Most successful? Probably the ‘Bubbles’ series, a Monsta X OT7 fiesta. I had a lot of feedback while posting that series and made a lot of friends. (It was also my first actual fic & it jump-started this blog!)
Who is your favorite person to write about?: Jackson Wang or Park Jinyoung from GOT7 and Han Jisung from Stray Kids.
Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose?: This is kind of a tough one because, yes- as a fanfic writer I’m using a real person as a character, however, the storyline, the dialog, the emotions, the actions of the characters are all organic. I could take any one of my stories and replace only that person’s name and it would be considered entirely original. So, I guess I would say it’s not so different.
What do you think makes a good story?: Great dialog.
What is your writing process like?: Sometimes I get an idea and go straight to word vomiting and editing. Sometimes it’s planning the title, characters, tags list, & summary then not looking at it for a few weeks until I’m ready to write it.
Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story?: Yes. All of my stories are AU (non-idol verse) so I would totally repurpose them.
What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand?: Love: friends/strangers/enemies to lovers, + grumpy character only soft for their love interest. Dislike: Love triangles, angsty slow burn, cheating, etc.
How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you?: IT IS EVERYTHING. I love reading tags, getting aks, getting messages, it warms my heart, and really motivates me to keep going.
What has been one of the biggest factors of your success (of any size)?: When I write and I really like my own story, it feels like a success.
Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged?: Yes, they certainly can be. I think people who don’t understand fanfiction can have a very narrow mindset and belittle fanfic writers because of that misunderstanding.
Do you think art can be a medium for change?: Yes. Even if its something as small as changing one’s mood.
Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself?: Not usually. I try to only write things that make me happy and if I ever get requests I’m not into, I usually won’t write it. If I’m not enjoying myself and the story, it’s not worth the pressure I put on myself to write it.
Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times?: It’s definitely possible, but I haven’t had many issues with this so far.

Throwing Copper Extended Chapter Notes

Teresa could see the stress James carried in his jaw and the dark circles under his eyes. She recognized it because she’d seen it in herself before, the restlessness and slight delirium, when she wasn’t sleeping.
The first sentence is an ode to the opening lyrics of Remo Drive’s “I’m My Own Doctor”: I’ve been self-diagnosing all of my problems, carrying all my stress in my jaw.
David Lee Autry was one of many aliases James had over the last few years but one he maintained with close attention because the so-called Autry had a credit card in his name. James hadn’t exactly had time to pack a bag when he broke out of a CIA facility to warn Teresa about impending doom. He showed up in New Orleans in a stolen car, the clothes on his back, contents of his pockets, and a bullet lodged in his chest.
David Lee Autry is the name written on James’ fake passport in 2x03 (around 20:54 in the episode); Pete from the militia group reads it.
James felt a lump in this throat. Whether it was because there was something very domestic about letting someone else do his laundry or because he worried the warning he’d come with wasn’t enough to protect Teresa every time she walked out the door, he wasn’t sure. But he swallowed his feelings down and didn’t put up an argument to her laundry suggestion. He appreciated the clothing George had lent him, but oversized tracksuits and brightly patterned button-down shirts were far from James’ aesthetic. And he absolutely refused to put on King George-branded attire, aerodynamic or not, so he’d been going commando while waiting for David Lee Autry’s online order to show up at Teresa’s PO Box.
When Teresa and James meet King George for the first time in 2x01, we get the lovely scene where he yells for someone to get Teresa a King George bikini (1:12) and later points to the speedo he’s wearing, saying “aerodynamic as shit, will make you feel alive, I trust” (1:18). And, like, who am I to not bring up aerodynamic speedos and going commando?
The doctor had come back and after patching him up, again, prescribed bed rest for the patient who seemed to be doing everything to keep aggravating his body rather than help it get better. Teresa had been furious, asking if he had a death wish after all, so he’d spent the last two days bored out of his mind in bed from inactivity, barely sleeping and reading Faulkner. Or maybe he’d barely slept because he was reading Faulkner. Either way, James knew it best to tread lightly where Teresa was concerned.
That didn’t mean he couldn’t sit in a chair at a desk though. Anything would be an improvement over laying on his back and waiting for his thoughts to float up to the ceiling.
So, listen, since they’re in Louisiana, and given their close proximity to matters of death and dying, if James is going to be reading anything at all, it just feels fitting that he’d be reading Southern literature, specifically William Faulkner. As I Lay Dying is an obvious choice, but personally I think he’d be reading The Sound and the Fury. Not that it matters.
The last sentence in the second paragraph is a reference to “Dreamspace” by Glacier Veins, and the line that goes I’m on my back so I float up to the ceiling to feel different.
Teresa had cried herself to sleep that night thinking about everything that could have gone wrong, if he hadn’t made it in time, or if he had but if it had been too late for him. It wasn’t just anyone—it was James, and he would’ve spent his last dying breath to tell her to chase safety if that was what it took.
Never did I think I’d manage to make a nod to and with my one last gasping breath I’d apologize for bleeding on your shirt from “You’re So Last Summer” by Taking Back Sunday. To be here, in 2020, as an adult, and finding a way to make that reference is...strange yet somehow satisfying at the same time. Also, the chapter title is in reference to a song off the Underoath album They’re Only Chasing Safety, and it looks like I found a way to work that in as well. I don’t know why my musical inspiration for this version of Jeresa seems to come from music that peaked in the early 2000s?
There was a time when James had been her mentor to the underworld, always keeping her from sinking to the bottom, even when he’d been the one who had to make the tough calls and take the brutal actions. She didn’t think he’d ever be able to rid himself of that balancing act, of showing her the ropes but strongly advising her to untether herself from the line completely, to walk away. Teresa could still hear his voice in the back of her mind, from the night after the party at the Birdman’s when he told her in a matter-of-fact fashion why he’d sent her in: your job was to learn. Since then, and especially in his absence, it seemed there’d been only tough lessons to learn and bitter pills to swallow.
I have so much appreciation for the early dynamic between James and Teresa. The car scene in 1x05 outside the warehouse is a highlight because when Teresa gets out, all indignant, she thinks she has the last word (0:15), and James comes right back at her (0:21) to tell her how it is. He’s kind of smug about it. I love it.
And I know that there’s trouble all the time. But it’s interesting that when they get away from this dynamic (especially in S4 where it doesn’t exist, because James isn’t there), it seems that’s where the real trouble comes in.
The balance that they create is delicate.
They were so far removed from the time he’d said I’ve got a plan for a future and it doesn’t include getting killed by crossfire meant for you. But he’d chosen crossfire—sought it out, really—that was what his future devolved into. And like he’d said back then, she was trouble. More and more, Teresa had begun to wonder if there was anything the James she’d first met in Dallas wasn’t right about.
I know this scene in 1x04 is often reblogged and quoted. After watching it several times, my only question is if it’s just the lighting of the scene or did they forget to apply James’ tattoos on set that day? I can’t watch it or see gifs of it now without that bothering me.
It only took Teresa a day to get the cat to venture inside and it only took George a few minutes to declare its name: Peach. God damn, we got ourselves a grumpy cat on our hands, George had exclaimed as she sunk her claws into his flesh before escaping from his embrace like a magic trick, she’s got the same personality as Giant Peach over here. She’s little Peach.
So I guess I rolled with that bts picture of Peter from Alice’s story and wrote the cat into the story. I bet this cat makes zero appearance in S5 and at no point do any of them ever have a pet but I did it anyway. The first thought when I saw it was “Peach and Giant Peach”. Would James be a cat guy? I think he would.
George suspected there was much more to the exchange than the parting words voiced out loud, noticing there was a sense of thanks in her eyes, too. The looks Teresa and James gave each other exuded the tension between them and always made it feel at least ten degrees hotter than it actually was in any room. They had their own way of communicating that only made sense to them, that no one else was privy to. There were better odds throwing copper down a wishing well than trying to decode their language of silence.
The story title comes from “Throwing Copper” by Touché Amoré. Like throwing copper in a well. You’ll never know if wishes work only time can tell.
This is not really the part that made me decide to name the story after the song, but I was still happy to find a place for it in the narration.
“Think you might need to reinvent your exit strategy, Giant Peach,” George said with a frown, nearly in disbelief with himself over what he was about to reveal to James.
“Reinvent?”
“Reinvent. Rethink. As in don’t make one. Methinks the last thing Little Principessa needs right now is more people leaving.” George spoke without his usual puns, so James didn’t have to question if he was being serious.
As mentioned earlier, the chapter title is from a song off of They’re Only Chasing Safety, “Reinventing Your Exit”. I think this might be the biggest Underoath song there ever was? Just listening to this makes me feel 14 again. This was such a gateway to other music that I ended up loving.
Teresa’s evolving thirst for vengeance, to even the score, was foreign to James. It was part of Teresa that scared James a bit. Before he left Phoenix, he’d seen tiny red flashes of her anger, questionable decisions so far removed from when she’d stood within shooting distance on a train car and said we can do a different way, where none of us has to die. Her vision had seemed clear then; she wanted to move product without the same bloodshed as Camila. When James worked for Teresa, he’d never wanted her to lose herself in the business, and never thought she should stay in the business—those were things she’d said she never wanted, too. But being at the top in the business, like she was, it changed people. It was inevitable. It pulled them down into the fire until there was nothing left but scorched earth.
I get the sense that we are never ever getting this kind of James in canon, who is not totally cool with the part of Teresa that she shuts off in order to be queen. I think we probably get another yes man. And for canon, for the sake of Teresa being the queen, I get it. That’s fine. But, in any fic, I always find myself trying to humanize characters and not just leave them as archetypes. The reason this story got so long, the reason there was no way I was going to get through it in 2500 words or less (lol, who am I kidding, I can’t write anything of that length), is because I realized this is the James I want to explore. I want to see him push back at Teresa and not just let go, not just get shut down. Because Teresa is far from perfect and she doesn’t always make the right decisions (tbh, I think she makes a lot of dumb decisions). It’s a delicate balance between the two of them that gives the best outcome.
James’ thoughts in this first chapter are the setup for the exploration of the Jeresa dynamic in the next two chapters.
James used to see a blinding light when he looked right into Teresa’s eyes, a moral compass of sorts, always willing him to choose the humanity he’d buried so deep. But now it was light mixed with dark, integrated too well to be separated. Now looking into her eyes was like staring at a flickering light, not sure if it was going to illuminate the cave or burn out.
Here is the part of “Throwing Copper” that resonated with me for this whole thing: Like staring at a flickering light, you don't know when It'll burn out, or how much time you have left to let it light up your life.
So relevant.
I don’t want to lose you. Maybe that had been a proclamation of love in her own way, and maybe that was the last honest thing Teresa had ever said to James, after she’d realized she’d been wrong to doubt him. Those words had gripped him and followed him. He’d found solace and comfort in them even after he left, because he’d wanted nothing more than to stay, but he left to protect her because of what Devon had hanging over his head.
One of the lines in Tegan and Sara’s “This is Everything” is baby, this is the last honest look I’ll ever give. But by the end of the song it turns into baby, this is the last honest love I’ll ever give.
Teresa and James so obviously love each other but they never say that out loud, right? I feel like that moment in 3x12 when she says “I don’t want to lose you” (around 23:05 of the episode) is the closest we’ve gotten thus far. There’s a silent moment before she says it, and a silent moment after, before James answers and I swear all of it is so telling. The silence. The way they look at each other. The body language. Everything. They know.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Real (ao3 / tumblr), which is Shigezane/[named] MC. Another one I feel compelled to edit, because I would change a lot about it if I were writing it today. But I also cherish it for what it is.
Favorite Story You Wrote: Oooooh! Hard! I think from last year that is Frost-Edged Fire, a “what happened” story for Sansa post-GoT. I like the way it reads, it felt good to make, and the response has been positive somewhere where I didn’t have my name to stand on, so I feel very satisfied with that one. I also really like one of the pieces I wrote for an Arcana zine coming out this year. :)
Story You Were Nervous to Post: I swing back and forth between “what happens, happens, I’ve written what I felt l needed to” and “PLEASE LET PEOPLE NOT HATE THIS sob sob sob”. I remember when I was working on Real I was trying to let go of some of my own standards for MAKE IT MAKE SENSE BACK FIVE GENERATIONS, so I was scared people would pick it apart even though it was such a soft, smooshy story and such a soft, smooshy thing to write. It still makes me feel vulnerable! I had my first run in with an anti in 2018 and for a while that shook me. I didn’t change what I wrote after that, but the experience was so jarring and gross I was tense.
How You Choose Your Titles: I like sideways titles, in the way of allusions and references. I usually choose single words that are either meant to encapsulate the tone or primary action of a story, or a word or short snip from a phrase, which I hope a reader will read in full in their head even though part of it isn’t there. But I understand that once something is out there, it’s really up to the reader to make of text and title what they will! That or phrases in French I try to make myself but often have to run by a native speaker to make sure they mean what I think they do (often: not quite).
Completed: I have no idea. The pseu slings bump the number way up, it’s probably around 150 total? For non-snippets, around 50? (Ao3 has 53 works, some of which have multiple sections)
Incomplete: I have an idea, and it is mortifying. There are some things I’ve written a little bit for but I know I won’t go back to and sometimes I think about putting them up as free prompts for others. Things I’m really trying on? 7. Given up but not ready to say so... 15ish? More I’m forgetting?
Do You Outline? Sorta! I start with the scene or scenes that motivate me to write in the first place, and then I have to outline to connect them. They are not usually the beginning or end because life is not fair and those parts are really hard.
Coming Soon/Not Yet Started: More IkéVamp! More parts in at last (MLQC). More FE3H! Maybe this will be the year I finally write the Isshiki-sempai story I’ve had floating in my head for Shokugeki no Soma. WHO KNOWS?! (I do. I won’t.)
Do You Accept Prompts? Sometimes! I love doing pseu slings twice a year (once in March and the other later in the year for a follower milestone or something). tbh it can be incredibly freeing, motivating, and feel-goody to write what I know someone has asked for-- connecting to requests and filling them feels wonderful and I have less time to dither or gather rosebuds or whatever, so it’s productive. I think some of my best work is writing that others have requested.

What do you use to edit?: Just me! I’m not flawless, but I trust myself more than any automatic service. I consciously choose to ignore several best practices when writing anyway. When I’m not as confident as I would like to be about something new, I may ask someone I trust in fandom to look it over as a one-time thing.
Writing setup: This is my desk right now! That’s a draft of this post on my laptop screen.
I need silence and steady lighting to write, so I set up my ~space~ in our basement. When I get a better desk chair and my cozy chair in here for brainstorming, it will be heaven! 🥰 Need: better record storage, more bookshelves, to paint, a rug instead of one of those Barnes & Noble quote blankets on the floor...

One of his hands held hers from below and the other lingered on the other side of the needlecase, close enough for warmth, close enough that she felt like a carefully-captured butterfly. A part of her soul waited to be appraised and wished she had wings.

7 Must Visit Bangkok Cafes
Bangkok is a large city the size of London, in both population and land mass, and can be overwhelming for first time visitors.
Most tourists head for the temples, Khao San Road and street food, but for people living in Southeast Asia, is a popular weekend break for spas, desserts and cafe hopping.
Although a cake and latte might not be at the top of your Bangkok to-do list, the city is home to many lovely cafes which can punctuate your holiday with little oases of calm and caffeine.
This is my must-visit Bangkok cafe list. It’s not exhaustive, and mostly revolves around Thonglor and Ekkamai. These neighbourhoods are adjacent and is the prime area for cafe hopping in Bangkok. I’ve included each cafe for different reasons: some for the decor, some for the atmosphere, and some because they have fabulous food and coffee!
1. Roast
Roast is located in The Commons, which is an eco-friendly mall, open-air with wood laminate flooring and greenery in little planters, and full of ‘artisanal’ shops and cafes. It’s one of the most hipster buildings I’ve seen in my life. When I went there, there were people sitting on the benches dotted around the building, working on their Apple computers and drinking lattes. It’s that kinda place.
The basement is called the Market Floor. It’s little food stalls in an industrial-chic space, more like the Food Hallen in Amsterdam or Gotham West Market in NYC, than the food stalls on the streets of Bangkok. There’s coffee here too: Roots, the more coffee-focused companion to Roast.
Roast is not so conveniently located in the basement. You have to climb the stairs to the very top.
When you do get there it’s an airy, light-filled space. The menu comes in the form of a little magazine. They do brunch, of the eggs benedict variety, and it looks fabulous. We had Roast iced tea (iced tea with lychee rose syrup and lychees, pictured) and amazing shakes: creamsicle and salted caramel. The salted caramel comes with a Pretz stick.

2. Shugaa
Shugaa is a dessert cafe and the main reason you need to go is because it is beautiful.
The space is beautiful, the desserts are beautiful. The decor is apparently sugar-themed, hence the geometric shapes reminiscent of sugar crystals. Everything is in soft, pastel shades. There is a small bear family made of, I imagine, fondant, sitting on the counter.
While it’s obvious that a lot of thought and care goes into the creation of the desserts, they run a little sweet for me, and heavy, for how sweet they are. These are substantial desserts. The different tiers of dessert are stuck together with syrup.
You know how on Bake Off: The Professionals people are sticking shards of sugar together with syrup and a blowtorch like they’re David Smith? Like that kind of industrial strength welding syrup. It’s instagrammable but if you like eating cakes you can do better.

3. Fill in the blank
Another cute cafe in Ekkamai, this is pretty much across the road from Shugaa with a totally different vibe. The feeling of this cafe is kinda Scandi/Japanese, light and breezy with lots of wood (including an indoor tree!). A great place to chill with a laptop or a book, they have some English and Japanese language local magazines with articles on trendy things to do and daytrips, etc. We went on a weekday and there was one (very friendly) member of staff. The place was pretty empty, just us and a laptopper.
There was a selection of cakes in a display box next to the counter but we didn’t have any as we were going to Shugaa after. I had a caramel iced latte instead which had cream drizzled with caramel syrup, very picturesque and not as sweet as a caramel Frappuccino. I also liked that it came with a little glass of water. Of all the cafes I’ve seen in Bangkok, I wish we had this one in London.

4. Audrey Cafe
Audrey is an Audrey Hepburn themed/inspired cafe. Normally I’m not into themed cafes, but I like frilly pink cafes and Audrey is the super frilliest pinkest cafe of all. It’s a mini chain with a few different branches, but the one at Thonglor has a fountain and a little rocking horse (!) in front, and is well placed for a day of cafe hopping. Inside the tables are marble-topped and there’s Hepburn quotes on the walls. Some of the staff are dressed in little maid outfits which is interesting but service is a little slow.
We ordered some pastel-coloured drinks: Sakura Glazier (pink) and Audrey on my Mind (light teal). They’re sweet frappe-style and very photographable, I’m like 99% sure the colour is artificial. The pricing is in line with London cafes: as you can see from the sign in the picture it’s 135 Baht for Audrey on my Mind, which is about £3.20.
They have a pretty solid food menu if you’re hungry, it goes way beyond typical cafe food and enters the realm of pizzas, tacos and fried rice, but it was pretty hit and miss. We weren’t really going to order food but while we were there, a little girl was celebrating her birthday (it feels the right kind of place for a little girl’s birthday and a girly afternoon) and her table had a lot of food, all of which looked pretty good. So we capitulated. We got the deep fried chicken wings with nuts and caramel, stir fried morning glory, fried rice and sliced pork loin salad. I was hoping the deep fried chicken wings would be like pok pok chicken wings - they’re were, disappointingly, not. The sliced pork loin salad was the best thing followed by the morning glory, the fried rice was too salty. The little girl’s birthday party had ordered the tom yam pizza and when theirs came out I kinda regretted not having gotten that instead of the fried rice.
The desserts are meant to be good but we felt so sugared up after the drinks that we didn’t want any.

5. D’Ark Coffee
D’Ark seems like a pretty typical modern cafe: exposed lightbulbs, wood, etc. etc. I went on a rainy weekday morning for coffee and there was only one other person there. But! Their coffee is great! They have different beans you can choose from and roast their coffee in house, and you can choose how you want it made: Aeropress, cold brew, Trinity One (which I don’t think I’ve seen before in a cafe). I went for a normal iced latte and decided to go all out and add their housemade salted caramel butter sauce, which is seriously amazing. I strongly recommend getting whatever coffee you like there and adding the salted caramel butter sauce. The coffee itself is not sweet so the sauce isn’t overwhelming.

6. The Asia Cafe
The Asia Cafe is a tall, bright cafe although it doesn’t have the window action of many Bangkok cafes. It’s bigger than it looks with an airy feeling. I like the giant wood cubbies behind the counter with piles of baguettes. I don’t think they’re real though. It seems to be...socialism themed? IDK. I say that because their front window has pictures of three dudes with little red stars, whom I think are (from LTR in the picture above): possibly Allende? maybe Ho Chi Minh? And some other dude I don’t recognise - his giant moustache + beardlessness stumps me.
I went because I heard they have sea salt coffee which I’m curious about, and also they have free rusks, and I like free things.
Sea salt coffee turned out to be an iced espresso topped with a salted creamy froth, kind of like the froth on cheese bubble tea but not cheesy. I really really like it this, the faint saltiness with the slightly bitter coffee go really well together and is refreshing, a little like when you have bitter unripe guava or grapefruit with salt.
The rusks are in a jar on the counter. I looked at the jar and was like, Can I have one? And the barista guy was like, Yes. You just kinda grab one from the jar, they’re rusks, they’re good.
I recommend this as a pit stop to revive yourself if you’re walking around Thonglor on a hot afternoon. It’s well located along a main road, the cafe has a relaxing atmosphere, is well air-conditioned, and has many plug sockets for your electronics and sea salt coffee to recharge yourself.

7. Caturday Cat Cafe
Caturday is Bangkok’s cat cafe. It has huge windows and is bright and airy, far more than Lady Dinah’s in London. There’s no cover charge, you just order a drink and you can be there for as long as you like - I think that’s why despite it being the most adorable of the cat cafes it’s also the busiest and most chaotic. They do food there though we didn’t have any. We had a Thai iced tea and an iced lemon tea, of the two the iced lemon tea was more refreshing, especially after walking around in the heat.
The cats are very sweet, in particular the little grey kitten. Like other cat cafes expect half the cats to be asleep and to be basically ignored by the other cats, although a few come and hang out with you especially if you sit quietly and drink your tea and ignore them.
This is by far the cutest cat cafe I have been to, ever. Granted I’ve only been to two, in Amsterdam and London, but still. There’s a giant cat mural of cats in a fairground, illustrated Caturday glasses and little coasters (I ended up buying one as a souvenir), and it’s all a pastel-coloured cat wonderland.

“The bust you see in front of you was crafted by none other than the great sculptor Francis Béranger. Of course, being one of poor background he only had his hands to do what he intended.” You scoffed inwardly at the instructor's words. It looked like it was handmade.
“It looks more like he maced it to make it look slightly like a human-shaped bust.” Jin whispered in your ear which caused you to chuckle quietly.
“I’m sorry I dragged you to this. I had no clue they closed off all the good art. This hang out was a bust.” Jin chortled a little loud at your pun earning the both of you a few distasteful glances. You wouldn’t blame them, the museum had closed off the section with the art pieces it had advertised their museum with. Now, we were stuck looking at mediocre paintings and sculptures with little to no tasteful history.
“Hey! I don’t really care what we do. As long as we’re hanging out, I’m totally fine. Plus, that pun saved the entire night.” The both of you still kept your voices low, as to not draw any attention to yourselves.
“But it’s been so long! I finally see you after six whole months after your tour and I can’t even plan a decent museum trip. Gosh, why is this so boring? I’ve never hated museums like right now.” Jin smiled at your pouty expression and nodded.
“Then y’know what?” He grabbed your hand and started pulling you away from your museum group. “Let’s fix that.” You protested lightly as he dragged you along but didn’t put up too much of a fight in case he let go of your hand. He only hushed your weak complaints and pulled you behind him.
Realization dawned on you as he led you to the area of the museum that you had come for in the first place. The only difference was that he totally disregarded the velvet rope that made the area off-limits to the visitors and ducked under it after checking for any onlookers. You whipped your head from side to side, to see if anyone was going to catch the both of you but saw that the entire hallway was empty.
“You wanna go in there? We’ll get caught Jin!” You whisper yelled. You don’t anyone would’ve heard you if you spoke normally but your panicked brain was way too scrambled to put that together.
“So? We’re not stealing anything. What’re they gonna do? Arrest us for admiring actual pieces of art?” He said sarcastically. You were still hesitant and Jin sighed and grabbed a hold of your hand -after he had let go of it to duck into the restricted are- and pulled lightly. Not moving you from your place but only as if he was testing you. “Come one (Y/N). I promise I won’t let anything happen.”
His eyes were soft and pleading as he said that. “Ah... I hate when you give me the puppy dog eyes. You know I’m weak for those!” You finally resigned to the idea of entering and ducked under the rope yourself. Jin smirked lightly and squeezed your hand before letting go again.
“Let’s see some real art shall we?”
“Ooh! Crime at the art museum, who knew we were such nerds?” You laughed as you took a look around the room. Your breath caught in your lungs. It was a wide open space with some paintings as large as the walls they were hung on themselves, and beautifully crafted statues that looked like they could rival the realism of Da Vinci’s many sculptures. You could faintly hear that Jin had said something to you after your last quip but you didn’t bother listening as you were too busy marveling at the restricted art. Why would they even hide this? The skylight dome lets in the natural sunlight that gave the room a sort of heavenly look and complimented the art so very well by highlighting the soft, aged colors of the paintings and making the sculptures seem borderline ethereal.
Jin realized you were long gone as he stared at your expression in awe. Your lips were slightly parted as you took in your surroundings and your hair looked like it was tangled in the rays of the sunlight surrounding the room. You’d never looked like this to him. Truth be told, Jin harbored affection towards you but never confessed as he was afraid that it would strain the friendship the both of you had maintained over the years. Seeing you look so star struck like this made Jin’s heart clench. You didn’t even notice him as you stared on at the various pieces of art in the room, and the only masterpiece he couldn’t move his eyes off of was you.
You finally remembered that Jin was still with you, patiently waiting for you to indulge yourself. You blinked and looked back at him to find that he was staring at you with an expression you’ve never really seen from him before. It was the first time you couldn’t get a read on his expression. He seemed to gracefully snap out of it and smile at you. The kind of smile that made your heart leap. “Wanna go?” He tilted his head towards the way you two had entered. “Or spend some more time in this room?”
You shook your head slightly. “We should leave before someone finds us. Plus, I can always come back later. should be the one asking you that since you’ll be way too busy with you idol life.” You smiled at him slowly walking your way out of the room.
“What, no pictures?”
You shook your head again, ducked under the rope and whirled around to face him. “Pictures won’t do the art in that room any justice.”
Jin silently agreed and followed after you towards the exit of the museum.
“How’d you like it then?” He asked, right after you left through the front doors of the museum. His hand was yet again, wrapped around yours as you leisurely paced your way back to your home.
You looked at him with an incredulous look. “You kidding me? Did you not see me in there practically drooling of how good that looked? I’m pretty sure I drooled.”
Jin scoffed comically and squinted his eyes at you. “Just a little bit.”
“Seriously though, were you not looking at the art? It looked breathtaking!” You explained loudly. Jin loved seeing you like this. Seeing you talk about things you were passionate about. The twinkle in your eyes could rival that of the night sky in rural villages.
“Trust me. I think I had my fair share of drooling over fine art as well.” You glanced at him, only to find him staring at you the same way he had in the museum. You furrowed your eyebrows and asked him if there was something on your face. Jin couldn’t take it anymore, he couldn’t just stay satisfied with longing glances towards you and he needed more.
He doesn’t know what made him snap today but the nest thing he knew, he had one hand rested on your cheek and the other still holding onto you as his lips were pressed against yours. His eyes clenched tight and he felt his resolve melting away as you didn’t kiss him back so he pulled away.
“Oh shit, (Y/N). I’m sorry- I jus-” His words were then cut off by your lips encasing his as your body was flush against his and both your arms were around his neck. After the initial shock of you actually kissing him, he starts to slide his lips against yours and wrapped his arms around your waist. It didn’t matter to him that you guys were basically making out in public like it should because all he could really focus on was you. You and your lips against his that tasted of what the sun felt like on his skin on a cold morning. That’s the only way he could describe your kiss.
You were the first one to pull back but your eyes were still shut as you did and Jin took a moment to etch this memory into his brain. You looked so vulnerable and so ready. You finally opened your eyes and looked at him with surprise. You didn’t expect the kiss. You didn’t even expect you kissing him back.
“Wow...” You let out after what felt like an eon but in reality, it was only a few seconds.
He chuckled airily and nodded in agreement “Wow indeed.” He smiled. That smile was going to get you in a lot of trouble.
“So... Is it safe to assume you’re into me?” You asked quietly. Strangers passed around you guys but you still held one another in an embrace.
“What do you think?”
“That you kissed me to mess with me?” You replied with a slight hint of sarcasm.
He shook his head slightly and leaned in to give you a small peck. “Never. I just couldn’t hold it back anymore. I wasn’t satisfied with just being your friend and I couldn’t take it. So um, I made a move.” He let out a breath of air in the last part.
“Hold back?” You smirked, deciding to tease him a little. “How long exactly have you been holding back?”
He groaned and looked up at the sky. “I don’t appreciate you mocking me when I’m trying to confess.” That promptly shut you up. He looked back down at you and bit his bottom lip slightly as his eyes sneaked a glance at your lips. “(Y/N), will you let me date you? Because honestly, now that I’ve kissed you, I don’t think I’ll be able to live with a thousand more kisses like that.” You smiled endearingly at him.
“Anything for you.” you whispered as you brought his lips down to yours again and gave all of you to him.

Taehyung could count three moments when he had felt immense fear in his life.
The first time was when he was merely a child, waking up to find himself staring at an unfamiliar white ceiling surrounded by the constant beeping of a machine. He had scanned his surroundings, taking in a foreign room completely different to what he had fallen asleep in, and with only one look at some sort of needle sticking out of his arm, he had screamed as loud as he could, trying to get out of the place that seemed for like a prison than anything else. His screams had caught the attention of his parents, who instantly rushed into the room to calm him down. While the sight of his parents had managed to stop him from trying to escape the room, he was still afraid of the sudden change in environment. He swore he had fallen asleep in his own room the previous night, but why was he in this room – which he soon figured out to be a hospital room based on the nurses who rushed in behind his parents – instead?
It was then that he first knew of the disease he carried within him – a vicious curse like no other.

If one asked Min Yoongi what he thought about the war, he would merely shrug and dismiss the question.
There was a time when Yoongi offer a more passionate answer. He would claim that the war, although costing millions of lives, was bound to lead humanity towards a better place. Charles Darwin had proposed that nature operated by the principle ‘survival of the fittest’, so why should humans, another part of the system on which nature operates on, be any different? And what better way to enforce that rule than to put the entire population at risk, have them fight and struggle for their own lives at war?
Perhaps such a view stemmed from the fact that he was born into a family line of Coordinators. His parents were both Coordinators – in fact they were part of the first generation of Coordinators born after the procedure was publicised, as well as one of the first few who had emigrated to the PLANTs. He grew up listening to stories his mother would whisper as he lay in bed, young eyes wide in attention as his mother spoke of how terribly Coordinators were treated in their very home planet. He remembered his young self lightly trembling as he clutched onto his mother’s hand, asking her questions in a manner only a young, innocent child could do.
“But mommy, why do they hate us so much?”
“Because, Yoongi,” his mother could only smile softly at her son’s question, memories of past battles and wars flashed before her eyes that reflected pain in them, “we, humans, get jealous. We want things that others don’t have, and Naturals are jealous of how much smarter, stronger, and faster we Coordinators are. That’s why they fight us, and we must fight back to save ourselves.”

He was known to be a member of the notorious racing group, BTS, who have been on the police radar for numerous speeding violations throughout the city of Seoul. However, none of the other members of the group could be found in the area.
“The truck driver was brought to the nearby hospital to receive immediate medical attention. He was reported to be in satisfactory condition. No pedestrians were harmed during the event.
“Eye witnesses claimed that the car was running down the streets at high speed, and ran straight into the truck. In the meantime, the police have sealed off the intersection and are currently investigating the matter in detail.
“Officer Jung of the police investigation department had commented and I quote, ‘At this point in time, we can only say that this was an unfortunate accident.’
“This is reporter Kim Sohee signing off from SBS News.”

You were what society deemed as an ideal citizen – with a Crime Coefficient remaining on the lower ranges your entire life, not once did your Psycho-Pass’ colour Hue turned the slightest bit of cloudy. It might have been easy acceptance of societal views and your internal strive for peace, coupled with faith in the system that governed modern society, that had played a pivotal role in such a turn of events.
The Sibyl System was introduced decades ago in an attempt to establish a stable society with as low of a crime rate as possible. The network of psychometric scanners continually scans each and every individual’s minds and mental states to determine their Psycho Pass, the likelihood of that individual to commit crimes, measured by the Crime Coefficient index. Once one’s Crime Coefficient exceeds an acceptable threshold, their Hue deviates from its ideal clarity to turn cloudy, and it was down to the officers of the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division to hunt them down and, if necessary, put them to eternal slumber. After all, in a society with virtually no crime, those who pose a threat to the balance should and must be disposed of quickly.
Thus, while people around you had looked down upon the career path you decided to take, claiming that your intelligence was ultimately wasted on a trash-hunting job, you firmly believed in your own path. While it was a hard feat to obtain scores as high as yours, none of the other high-scorers decided to enter the Public Safety Bureau, much less the Criminal Investigation Unit. Therefore, you took it upon yourself to do so in hopes of accomplishing things no one else could – all for the benefit of society.
However, what you did not account for, was that you would have to deal with a flashback from the past – that you would need to deal with him.

Inside the Mind of a Mental Game Coach + GIVEAWAY!
From time to time I love to highlight people within the sport, the BTS side, if you will (I only recently figured out what BTS meant, BTW. behind the scenes!). Running is a sport that requires a lot of mental fortitude. I first met Coach Dean in August of 2015 as I was preparing for the Twin Cities marathon. My interactions with him have changed the way I view both myself and the sport, and he has become a great friend. He was kind enough to do an interview with me, and even better, is giving away his unique, comprehensive mental game assessment (M4PAASS), including the results of the assessment and a complete personal mental toughness game plan. You have a pretty interesting background, care to explain what your history is with the sport?
I started running as a sophomore in high school. A friend of mine on the cross-country team stopped me from catching my bus home just to get me out for the team. It worked. I’ve been running ever since. I ran in college but really improved most post-college and as a masters runner. I raced almost as fast at 40-45 years old as I did 20-25. I’ve raced everything from 400m - well really 440 yards - up to 50 kilometers (both on the track!).
How did you become interested in the mental game of athletes?
I have always loved psychology. It was my minor in college. I found the mind just amazing and complex. I first took graduate sports psych courses for my own benefit. Next thing I knew I was using it on a regular basis helping other runners but integrating it into the coaching I was doing. Back in the 90′s, I decided that this was what I wanted to do full time.
You work with a diverse group of athletes – not just runners – what parts of mental game training are the same across different sports? Different?
This could be a long answer. I’ll try to keep it succinct without losing meaning or watering this down too much.
First I’d say that the mental game is the mental game no matter the performance venue (I say this because I include musicians or dancers in this as well.) Applications and techniques are the same - such as visualization aka imagery, focus-refocus, regrouping and pre-performance routines.
But the implementation is unique to the elements of the sport.
The cues to keep one focused differ by sport. How you might use a “regrouping” technique will be different in a self-paced sport like running compared to something like basketball.
And of course any team sport has elements that individual sports do not.
What is the biggest challenge you face when working with athletes?
I think there are two. The first one is getting athletes to see the value of mental game coaching. Some athletes think you either got it or you don’t. Others don’t think you can learn the skills. The second and related is that they just don’t think it’ll help them perform better.
Now for an athlete I’m working with it’s probably patience. Everyone wants a quick fix. You didn’t get to think the way you do overnight. You won’t get to think a “new” way overnight either. I tell everyone, it’ll take every bit of effort you put into your physical training and maybe more.
One of my favorite parts about talking shop with you is that you know a lot about the science side of sport. However, science and mental game can sometimes be at odds with one another (for instance, I tend to race better than my workouts would indicate). How do you balance these two aspects with the athletes you work with?
I love this question. Because I believe that this gets to one of my strengths as a coach. I have content knowledge of science and sports as well as applied sports psychology - with emphasis on “applied”. I believe that I’m adept working with athletes as individuals. There is no single solution; no single technique; no template to force fit athletes into. And I love the challenge of finding new ways to make things work for THAT individual athlete. I can suspend that other stuff I know to get results. So, regardless of what the “books say”; in the application part of all this - you do what works.
How have your own personal running experiences shaped the way you approach mental game training?
I was never the most talented runner. I was ok. But I sure had a competitive mindset and rarely did anyone get me off my game. I can’t remember a race that I had anxiety about or doubted myself. Oh, I had my bad races for sure but I was always there to “win”. My enjoyment of pushing my limits and the freedom and self-control I felt is something I wish everyone could experience.
What is your favorite part about being a mental game coach?
This will sound so cheesy. I love making a difference in people’s lives. I love the relationships I develop. To see someone move beyond fears that limit them; to experience life fuller; to completely enjoy the moment… It’s all inspiring to me and keeps me going.
Your mental game program is pretty comprehensive. Can you explain what it is and how you developed it?
I have to give a nod to Dr. Patrick Cohn at Peak Performance. I completed his mental game coaching program after my graduate work. This provided the bridge from academic to practical-applied sports psychology. His program provided the initial base for the programs I’ve developed for athletes. I designed and tested a proprietary mental game assessment that I now have all my athletes take. That provides the initial data - our starting point. I designed programs for several sports. But even within those programs I tailor the specific elements to the needs of the athletes who come to me for help.
What is your favorite mental game technique?
For me, like music, it’s about my mood or the situation so this is tough to say. I would say that historically I’ve used imagery the most and the “announcer” in my head technique (It’s a play by play on my run - think Larry Rawson and Frank Shorter announcing the New York Marathon, only I’m the star). I have a pretty vivid imagination and I can make these so real.
As a competitive runner, what was your biggest mental struggle?
Easy: Over-thinking. The phrase that comes to mind: A thinking athlete is an under-performing athlete. An athlete’s job on competition day is execution - not over thinking. Yes, some decisions have to be made but if you are well trained they are almost automatic.
What is the most common mental struggle that you see in runners?
In youth it is often related to anxiety of racing or having an overly external reference, that is, comparing to others.
More mature runners I see the anxiety and wanting to find the secret to pushing through discomfort.
Is it the same for all types of athletes?
The peer or comparison issue is pretty strong regardless of sport.
Do you think the adage is true that running is 90% mental and 10% physical?
Thank you for this. Total garbage but it makes for a pithy quote.
First, in reality - you can’t truly quantify this.
Second, it is completely subjective (what exactly is 90% of running anyway - 9/10ths of a stride?).
Third, it is unique to the individual (you or I have different issues to different degrees).
Fourth, it is unique to the situation (practice vs competition vs championship). And I’d even throw in a fifth point - it depends on mastery of your sport (if you are still mastering skills - it’s more physical). Mental training cannot compensate for poor physical preparation.
What factor do you think most contributes to an athlete’s mental obstacles?
All behaviors are learned - directly or indirectly. So, how we think is the culmination of experiences, role models, and learning with a pinch of genetics thrown in for good measure. My focus is on Controlling the Controllables. You don’t control any of those things from your past nor your genetics. But you do control NOW. So let’s do something about it, eh?
What has been the most rewarding part of your job so far?
I think like any teacher, seeing the light bulb go off or when you get that call or out of the blue and the athlete says something like… “I couldn’t wait until our next session to tell you - I did it. I did what you taught me and nailed my performance. Thank you!”
