thinking about how the extra area added on to a pacifist run of undertale, the true lab, is about alphys's past mistakes. how it ends with the story reaffirming that, despite the pain she's caused, the thing that matters is that she has now made the choice to do the right thing. she's still worthy of her friends' love.
thinking about how undertale doesn't expect the player to get a pacifist ending for the first time. how it's more likely than not that the player will kill toriel the first time they battle her, how lots of players don't initially figure out how to end undyne's fight without killing her, etc. what it expects — not even expects, really, but hopes — is that the player, if they care enough, will use their canonically acknowledged power over time to make up for those mistakes.
no matter how many neutral runs a player has done before committing to the pacifist run, the thing that matters to the characters, to the story, is that you've chosen, now, to do the right thing.
compared to alphys, the player honestly gets off lightly, in that you're the only one (other than flowey) who really remembers any harm you might have caused. and any direct guilting the game could have done about it is long past at this point. instead, as undertale often does, it makes its point via parallels: alphys caused harm, and she knows it. she has committed to being better. in doing so, she has unlocked for herself a better ending to her story. and she deserves it. she's forgiven.
those structural narrative parallels are all over undertale, if you know where to look. and that's one of the things that makes it so fuckin' good.

Ayyyy, I just wrote a new poem today and I'm really happy with it (๑ت๑) Maybe I'll talk about it??
It's about love (on a surface level, I suppose? it's message is mainly meant to uplift by talking about all the bad ugly stuff) but some of its contents are on the darker side. Like, love gets compared to leeches, worms (kinda? it's a bit indirect), mould, perverted hands, puppetry, a bat who can see but is ignoring a venomous snake eating/killing a baby/someone as fragile as a baby (I promise that's the most gruesome thing there) and it's defined as a right that no one enforces.
And there are two really nice allusions. One to Greek mythos/culture(?) (the title, "Philautia" and the line, "policed by Odysseus") and another to Romeo and Juliet.
Philautia refers to the Greek love concept of self-love which I included because you have to learn to love yourself before you can love others
Odysseus was a cunning hero but what I'm referring to is the story where he was fighting a drunken giant who asked what his name was and he said "Nobody" so the giant started screaming that "Nobody" was attacking him and no one came to help
The Romeo and Juliet refers to, "O, swear not by the moon, th'inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb, Lest that thy love prove likewise variable"
And also this, "Why then, O brawling love! O loving hate! O any thing, of nothing first create! O heavy lightness, serious vanity, Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms, Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is! This love feel I, that feel no love in this". It was just a random thing that stuck with me when Romeo was angstily spitting a bunch of oxymorons
Also, the grimness may be because I recently consumed a lot of Emily Dickinson's poetry?? "I Felt a Funeral, in my Brain" kind of felt harrowing to me, in a sort of way I couldn't look away from. Well written.
If anyone's interested I'll reblog with snippets of the stanzas I'm talking about. There's 11 and I tried to get out of my comfort zone and write a poem with zero rhymes
Done in a day!

This is not a goodbye, my darling, this is a thank you. Thank you for coming into my life and giving me joy, thank you for loving me and receiving my love in return. Thank you for the memories I will cherish forever. But most of all, thank you for showing me that there will come a time when I can eventually let you go.

We need to be reminded of the cross every single day. Never allow the cross to lose it’s centrality to your life.  To the world the cross is a symbol of shame; to those who believe it is a symbol of salvation, the power of God. God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The message of the cross is the ultimate love story. Through His shed blood Christ paid for the penalty of our sins. Yes, it seems almost mind-boggling to think that Jesus loved us so much that He freely gave His life for us.
I John 3:16 says,  "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us."  I truly believe it was not the nails that held Jesus on the cross, but rather it was His love for us.
