Get Your Morning Started 🤍

I bet you already read dozens of morning routines but maybe I can offer you a few different tips and tricks with my step by step morning routine.

waking up early is essential to make the most out of the day. If you aren‘t an early bird, try different kinds of alarm clocks (light, nature sounds, etc).

After waking up make sure there is some water on your nightstand and drink it. Start hydrating!

Try to avoid your phone as long as possible - no one needs your attention that early in the morning. Be considerate and put your attention on yourself!

Don‘t make your bed. Srsly! Open your window and air your bedding first. Making your bed right after getting up is a safe place for mites. While ventilating the bedroom you can go the bathroom, prepare your drinks/breakfast, journal or meditate. Make your bed 30 min after leaving your bed.

Meditate. Light a candle or incense sticks. Roll out your fitness mat and choose between guided meditations or non guided meditations (I recommend guided for beginners, you can find some on YouTube or Spotify) meditation is key try to stick to it daily!

Journal for organisation and personal growth. 5 to 10 minutes only (!!!) there are many journals out there, I personally use the 5 Minute Journal but any journal would do. You can use a plain notepad and look up journaling ideas on pinterest I really don‘t want you to spend money on stuff you don‘t necessarily need just for the aesthetic.

Move your body honey! Do a YouTube workout or go for a run. Walk your staircase up and down do whatever you feel like doing but try to ignore your lazy bum trying to make you skip this. Get stared on this one you can thank me later.

Breakfast, baby. Nutrition and hydration is non-negotiable! Have your vegetables and fruits, drink your coffee or matcha, don’t forget to drink your lemon water. Don‘t skip breakfast to loose wait angel. Your organs need the calories to function during the day so treat yourself with love and consideration.

Keep calm and moisturise. Quick shower or wash to get ready for the day. Skincare is everything. I’m currently investing (and testing) Korean skincare for myself but a few products are key: cleanser -> toner -> antioxidant serum (vitamin c) -> eye cream -> moisturizer -> sunscreen

Make up and dress up. Find your personal style you feel comfortable with and you‘re good to go. You can look up outfit capsules on pinterest for wardrobe ideas. In terms of make up I personally think less is more. Mascara, lip oil, some rouge on the cheeks and vaseline and you‘re fine. I personally prefer a sleek hairstyle.

Listen to podcast. This step is easily combined with breakfast or getting ready. I‘m currently listening to Confessions by Anastazia but I’ll probably make a playlist with my fave podcast episodes from various podcasts and share it with you.

Batfamily Shenanigans:Head-canons Pt: 3

Even though has vigilantes they Batfam drive several different vehicles, most of them don’t have a license or got it late. Steph,Cass,Duke, and Damian don’t have licenses. Dick,Tim, and Barbara have licensed, Jason has a fake license due to the fact he and Bruce were supposed to declare him not dead but both have forgotten and he just gets Barbara to update it if it expires.

Speaking of cars I feel like those that can drive have favorite or one specific vehicle that use.

Bruce drives an all grey Lamborghini or a red Porsche.

Dick has a older Porsche in green.

Barbara had a yellow buggy when she was younger but now she has a black SUV.

Tim usually takes one of Bruce’s Mercedes.

Jason has two motorcycles and a older impala he fixed up in his spare time.

Damian likes to paint his sisters nails, he finds it calming. Stephanie is his favorite, Cass only likes her nails painted sometimes not all the time and Babs picks at her nails when she’s stressed. Stephanie let’s him pick the color and the just sit in his room while he paints.

Bruce has a large collection of alcohol but he himself doesn’t drink.

Alfred has a notebook with a contact for each family member in case they won’t listen to him or needs help. Bruce has Clark, Dick has Wally, Jason has Roy, Tim has Conner, Damian has Jon, and Barbara has Dinah. If plan A fails he’ll call plan B for any of them. Diana.

Tim has Hypoglycemia.

Dick has the most tattoos. It’s only five and their all small.

Bruce can’t stand the smell of gasoline it reminds him of when he lost Jason.

Alfred will order pizza once a month. One to give him a break and two because no eats the same pizza so he has order everyone their own whole pizza. It goes as followed.

Bruce doesn’t really like pizza that much but he eat what kind Alfred orders him, Dick is a Hawaii pizza Guy pineapple and all, Jason likes Buffalo chicken pizza, Tim likes pepperoni, Damian of course gets vegetarian, Duke what pepperoni and nothing else, Stephanie like plain cheese, Cass likes Pepperoni and and black olives, Barbara likes Supreme,and Alfred doesn’t like pizza he likes the cheesy garlic bread or flatbread pizza.

Personally I think of Jason has either half Latino and Italian or Puerto Rican, Tim has Korean American.

In that same vein, I see the Batfamily in this height range: Jason is 6’2-6’3, Bruce is 6’2,Alfred is 6’1, Duke is 6’0, Dick is 5’11, Barbara is 5’10, Stephanie and Cassandra are 5’9,Tim is 5’8, Damian is 5’5.

Also, we all know Tim is Bi,Selina is Bi and Kate is a lesbian. I see the other Bats as different sexual orientation as well. Dick is Pan, Jason is Asexual, Stephanie is Pan, Cass and Damian are both Aromatic, Duke is straight, and Barbara is Bicurious but is comfortable to enough to appreciate beautiful women. Bruce is Bi and just doesn’t know it yet.

Cass is very good a tending to different hairstyles and textures. She braids Babs,Steph and Dick’s hair. She’s also helps Damian and Bruce with their hair due to over styling it putting to much product in their hair. She also cuts Dick’s hair when it gets to long and greasy.

Duke is very good baking and his sweets are high on everyone’s lists like Alfred.

Stephanie definitely is the Big Sister Damian always needed. She pranks him, teases him about his crushes, but she also leaves her apartment window unlocked for Damian to enter at anytime of the night when he feels overwhelmed and doesn’t want to go to Bludhaven. She takes him to his favorite art supply store in Gotham Heights, and even gifts him stuff for his next project.

Tim is definitely the lost child of Dick and Barbara. Even though the two aren’t together and have different relationships(another head cannon), Tim is pretty much their child of divorce. They both have check his location to make sure he’s not trying to burn down LexCorp, or if he hasn’t left is room for three days straight Tim might find it strange that all tech disabled except for his phone but it’s reprogrammed to only call Barbara and only then will she fix it devices. Dick will just randomly enter Tim’s office at Wayne Enterprises and will mess with his stuff while Tim’s on a zoom meeting. And once he’s done he will ask Tim what’s their plans for lunch.

Selina and Talia both will make random trips to Wayne Manor to check on their children. Selina has threatened Bruce’s life numerous times for shouting at Dick or Duke. Bruce has woken up in the middle of the night to a dagger drawn to his throat he knows it’s Talia and all she says is, “Don’t make me have to have this talk again beloved, I’d hate for poor Alfred to have to clean up your room.”

Tim and Damian both hate mint chocolate chip ice cream. Cass finds it enjoyable and will help eat their portions if she needs to.

Duke taught Damian how to play Spades, and in return Damian taught him to paint so he could paint his girlfriend a gift for their anniversary.

🍋 project diaries // brb, i'm going to code a bunch of lemons

in this issue 🔍: starting a coding project for fun after literally YEARS 🤓, drawing pretty (questionable) mock-ups 🎨, FONT SELECTION 🤌, color theory (i don't know her) 🤨

project inspo pics (left to right): toram (like this squirrel-bunny creature, my project is also going to be cute and irrelevant) // a shade of yellow + hex code (i know how to do shading on paper from my sketching practice so i wonder if i can code that??) // lemons~~ (definitely gonna see about using the flowers' shade of red as a highlight/underline effect on-hover!!)

i did it!! i actually started a coding project for fun 🎉 now i just need to, ahem, finish it 🙈

the last time i wrote ANY code for fun was when i was still learning to code for the first time in Khan Academy's Processing JS environment, so of course this project has to use p5.js for the nostalgia 🥺 but it's main purpose is to give me the opportunity to code a bunch of cute lemons in a gif-ed pixel art(?) style.

i drew a crappy little mock-up on my phone with my thumbs 👍👎 so you can kinda see ✨ the vision ✨ (if you squint and tilt your head):

my thumbs got a little over-excited. my MVP (minimum viable product) is actually just the lemons + the words DAILY ZESTY 😂 the key point here is setting goals so darn achievable i will never give up 😅

so, let's summarize the important specs:

special features that nothing else out there has: none 💀

work that could be accomplished without coding: literally everything 💀💀

the promise of fun and a sense of personal accomplishment: is there ☺️

me looking for fonts:

should i make my own font with my hand-writing since nothing is exactly matching what i want? 👀

the only font-maker for handwriting i've found won't work for Chinese or Korean 😞

WHY ISN'T THERE A FONT THAT SUPPORTS BOTH CHINESE AND KOREAN??

now,,, colors have historically been "ok, whatever" territory for me, but i'm looking to (hopefully, slowly) change that as i work through this project...

yes, i know the green doesn't match my mock-up and i'm not even 100% convinced i even like the color in the mock-up, but that's not important FOR NOW. the main thing i wanted to get down was that the green part on top is colored by p5.js so that i can dynamically draw and animate the lemons on top of it while the color everywhere else is just plain CSS background-color

also toying with the idea of a softer off-white color for the div (the center box thingy) instead of smack-dab-in-your-face just the total absence of color that i kinda hate 🤢 idk if changing the green will change how the white looks, we'll have to see~

💌: overall pretty excited for this project since i rarely get to do creative design things at work and i don't often feel like i have a lot of agency — i just have to build whatever is needed. this project is purposely designed to be kind of useless and unnecessary because it's just so freeing that way 🕊️ it's also a welcome procrastination activity when i really should be studying my psychology coursework 🤭

Rating/roasting Death costumes from Elisabeth das musical

So, this, ladies and gentlemen, is somewhat of my small magnum opus. I'm rating the costumes based on how well I think they're constructed, how much I think the design fits Death as a character and personal preference. What entitles me to undertake this task is me being a student of costume design at uni and being a crazy fan of this show

Disclaimer: I'm only rating costumes from the European productions of Elisabeth das musical, because this post would be way too long if I were to get into all the Japanese and Korean productions costumes.

Original (Vienna, 1992-1996)

Love the iridecsence and shimmer the fabric has, love how flowy it is, altough I wish I could see more contrast between the separate fabrics. The right amount of androgyny with the jacket skirt and the super fluffy hair to set the bar really high for future productions. But, it could have been tailored a bit more in some parts and the execution could have been a teensy bit better. A believable unearthly being. 9/10

German productions (2001-2008)

Not totally on board with making the entire costume black, since it can look a tad too plain in pictures, but that shimmery velvet is so pretty. Not sure if I like all of the seams finished by bias tape, leaning more towards no, since it's giving the costume more of a pyjama appearance rather than some luxurious fantastical coat. I love the cut they gave the jacket, because long jackets with trains are awesome, but with the amount of stories of Deaths tripping on it, I don't think a train is a wise choice for this role. The idea was there, but it wasn't thought through too well. 7/10

Budapest production (1996-2005, 2007-)

I love how goddamn shimmery this Death is! Like, it's balancing the line between being too much and just enough, but I love all the glitter going on. This Death looks like some otherworldly alien and for the most part, I am digging it. I love the decoration going on on the top part of the jacket, but I'm not sure if I like how baggy the coat's silhouette is. And I think the trousers could have benefited from some decorations, because they look like they belong to some other costume. Also, some Deaths wear a waistcoat with this costume and for that piece, I feel like the waistcoats are a bit too long. 8/10

1st revival (Vienna, 2003-2005)

Kept the basic essence of the original design, but upgraded it with a cleaner execution and super sharp tailoring. It could have used some decoration, but I am not too upset about that. We lost a fair bit of the androgyny, but I like their decision to go for an empire style cut for the jacket. And the color contrasts between the black and that bright saturated ultramarine are so good. This design is simple, but hits hard and it's iconic for a good reason. 9/10

Finnish production (Turku, 2005-2006)

This feels very similar to the German tour design to me with the long coat, but with more decorations. I like the choice of the braided cording (perhaps as a nod to Elisabeth's love of Hungary by including elements similar to a hussar uniform). And I like the poofy shirt he seems to have underneath along with the fingerless gloves. But I'm not sure if gold was exactly the best color to use for the deco for Death (I think silver would have looked much better). So, poins off for that and for the trip hazard of the coat. 7.5/10

Flemish production (Antwerp, 2009)

An omen of the bland designs to come. Completely destroyed the color storytelling and made Der Tod look plain as heck. At least the tailoring seems decently good. The only saving factor other than that was the glitter on the black costume. 3/10

2nd revival (Vienna, 2012-)

No. Just... no. This is literally the most plain, most boring costume they could have given him. I get that they wanted to go for a more "masculine" look for Der Tod, but even if I was a fan of this approach, the execution is so boring. Like, the tailoring is good, but it's just bland overall as a costume (and you know you've got a bland costume at hand when the most interesting detail on it are two patches of quilted/couched pleather). It's missing everything that makes a Der Tod costume good in my book. This Tod isn't an otherworldly being, he's just... a dude in pleather. If I were Elisabeth, I would in no way be enchanted with this man and his untucked shirt. 2/10

Kecskemet production (Kecskemet, 2021-2022)

A bit unusual, I'm unsure if I like or dislike it. Like, he is very nicely dressed, which I like, the tailoring looks good, but he kinda looks like a pimp (I do like the cane, tho). With skunk hair, which I don't know if I'm a fan of. Also, I'm not really fond Death being in white through the whole show. And those white contact lenses this Death wears are kinda scary. 5/10

Czech production (Plzeň, 2019-2023)

I didn't think I'd like this costume this much, but this is like what the 2nd revival designers wanted to do with Der Tod, but were too afraid to do. In my opinion, this is how you do a Death costume out of pleather. Despite the material, the coat is flowy and has just the right amount of length to not be a hazard. All the little details you notice once you take a good look at this costume, despite it looking very simple at first glance, are so great! This is a Death, who doesn't quite understand the concept of how a human dresses and all those little details hint at that. I like the choice of making this Death styled after a crow/raven, down to that epic feather shoulderpiece. And thumbs up for them not being afraid to really go in with the makeup. 8/10

Bruxellons production (Brussels, 2022)

This Death costume is so simple, but I commend the designer for going for something new and fresh. The tailoring is crisp, I love the shade of blue they gave Death and the choice of a mesh shirt isn't something I would think I'd like, but I do like it. And I like that this Death has some accessories to complement the simplicity of the base costume. And I love the matching painted nails! It's very much something outside of the box of how we usually see Death designed and it's refreshing. 8/10

Anyway general breakdown of my thoughts on Scott Pilgrim:

Perfectly solid romantic drama. I'm actually kind of impressed that the story does not feel dated (except in, like, having flip phones) despite it having by now been copied to death. I'd even dare to say it was ahead of its time. A lot of that is purely through the lack of apprehension with which it portrays gay people, particularly gay men, which like, no one was doing in the early 2000s. That isn't exactly praise, and it comes with a lot of caveats, but it's worth saying. The art was Fine. There was some truly repulsive comic art coming out in the early 2000s and while I'm not a fan of the art style, it's not terrible.

Neither Scott nor Ramona are particularly interesting characters on their own, and their relationship is (deliberately) plain and stereotyped. This is somewhat lampshaded in the story, but still a bit dissonant when compared to the cultural impact of * their * relationship on the general Heterosexual Culture. Ultimately, their romance was the least interesting part of the story, which I think Bryan Lee O'Malley knew.

Knives is kind of the obvious emotional core of Scott Pilgrim, and (by Bryan Lee O'Malley's admission) has the most true and complete character arc. She's, in my opinion, the articulation of a lot of the greater thoughts and anxieties held by the author as opposed to Scott, who is a general representation of a (white) everyman. There's a lot I could say about Knives specifically, but it really comes down to Knives being too big a character for her story. Despite all of her development and screentime, her arc feels starkly incomplete. This isn't really * inappropriate * -- the central idea of her character is that she is a child, ergo still developing -- but it does make the conclusion feel more empty than it should.

The way this is most obvious, I think, is the discomfort with which Scott Pilgrim (series) handles The Existence Of Gay Women. Bryan Lee O'Malley is obviously pretty damn comfortable with the existence of gay men, but seems to have difficulty in processing intimate, sexual relationships between women. Knives is (subtly) written as gay from the get-go, but this aspect of her character (despite, arguably, being a core motivational factor to every other aspect of her character) ultimately produces a lot of momentum to have nothing much done with it. By the beginning of volume 4 it's evident that the author has noticed this dissonance and attempted to address it, but ultimately did so ineffectively. What resulted was a strange, forced kiss between an adult woman and an underaged girl that had essentially no lasting narrative impact, and also Ramona Is Gay, Btw, Not That This Will Ever Be Acknowledged Again. (I kind of have nothing to say about the bizarre pedobait in that volume that was subsequently backtracked.)

The last point I'll allocate to this post is how taken aback I was by the pervasiveness of race as a source of conflict in Scott Pilgrim given that I'd literally never seen someone acknowledge race as a source of conflict in Scott Pilgrim. Knives, aside from her conflicts as a gay girl, is also an articulation of the author's anxieties when it comes to race, particularly the perceived inadequacy of Asian men and the vulnerability of Asian women. This, while fairly understated, is very deliberate and very heavily saturated within the text of the story. Just as Scott has a fetish for gay women, he's implied to have a fetish for (young) Asian girls, and while his repeated and specific assertion of physical dominance of Asian boys/men is never brought up in those terms, it's pretty obviously A Thing.

I think this is probably the most interesting aspect of Scott Pilgrim from a "what's this author's fucking Problem" perspective given that Bryan Lee O'Malley has a Korean mother, though I don't particularly want to go into too much depth. I will say the one way in which Scott Pilgrim felt especially dated was in its particular slew of Orientalist stereotypes, which were in themselves pretty telling: Japanese people have scary cyberpunk shit, Chinese people do martial arts, and Korean people are entirely beneath mention. As I was finishing the story I had to wonder how the story might be different if it were made today, specifically in that Korean people are now at the forefront of North American pop cultural consciousness in a way they were not in the early 2000s. I had to wonder the author's relationship to his own identity informed his decision to not include any prominent characters of his own ethnicity.

okay project sekai appearance headcanons time. friendly reminder that i’m always right and if you have any complaints, you should reevaluate yourself. also this is a Long post

ichika looks. mostly how she does in canon to me. i do think she’s a bit gangly, just without the height. the way she carries herself is pretty awkward, and she has bad posture.

saki is a part-time mobility aid user. i’m not sure which one specifically she would use, but either way it’s decked out in all kinds of stickers. also i don’t like how ambiguous her being a gyaru is in canon, but she is one. also all three tenmas have dimples and yes i’m including toya

honami is fat why is she not fat in canon. also, she straightens her bangs, but stops doing that going into her 2nd year once she’s gained more confidence in herself. her hair is naturally super wavy. freckle haver

shiho has really broad shoulders, and also she has a septum piercing and a bunch of ear piercings.

minori has So Many Freckles, and her teeth are a bit crooked. she’s mixed japanese-mexican

haruka also looks mostly how she does in canon, but i think she starts to dress a lot more masc over time, and gets her hair cut shorter too. a big reason she dresses so plain and feminine is because she thinks it’s how she should dress as an idol

airi’s hair is thick in the like. getting the brush stuck in it way, and is also a lot wavier than it is in canon to me. mixed hispanic/japanese, but i don’t have a specific ethnicity i headcanon her as

an is filipino-japanese. ken is my favorite filipino single dad of all time (i am ignoring the fact that an has a mother. ken is a single father). also maybe she’s taller than she is in canon because i think it’d be funny if she was taller than akito in heels

akito is hispanic/japanese and shorter than he is in canon (he’s like 5’5) and he eventually grows his hair out into a mullet and he has piercings and his hair is not naturally orange. i will not accept it until they show shinomom on-screen and she is a ginger. my good mutual zip has converted me to fat akito as well so there’s that. i’ve just been playing dress up with him and now canon akito looks wrong to me

toya… i decided this just now he is a person with albinism. good for him. and dimples because tenma

tsukasa like i said earlier also has dimples. also he should be allowed to grow out his hair but he has not yet.

i confess i have nothing for emu. i tend to draw her with freckles though sometimes. and actually i take that back i like the hc of her being blasian. she has beaded braids a lot. i can see her getting wxs colors :)

nene is blasian as well. also chubby. why is there no body type variation in proseka (i know why don’t try to explain it to me) make some of them fat i’m begging you

rui has the most fucked up teeth. his canines are like fangs vampire style. had braces as a kid and they did not work. also has heterochromia. one blue eye and one yellow. he is so extremely lanky and i don’t believe for a second he is 5’10 this guy is like 6’0

kanade is so frail and i don’t know why she is drawn like almost the same as the others when she is literally like ghostly pale and sickly but that’s besides the point. the worst eyebags you’ve ever seen.

mafuyu is like. i think she starts to lose weight during her 2nd year at the height of all her stress, but begins to gain back what she lost in her 3rd. she is fat. also cuts her hair shorter

ena is mixed hispanic/japanese obvi and she has naturally wavier hair. also has horrible dark circles. is naturally chubbier and she is once she gains a healthier relationship with food. it’s the good ending guys gaining weight as a sign of healing.

mizuki mizuki mizuki. taller than she is in canon by kind of a lot. like 5’7-5’8. mostly because mizuena height difference is good. also has streaks of lighter and darker pink throughout her hair because it’s natural and that’s how hair works (it’s especially prominent with her though).

all 4 of them get gray hairs early because of stress. ena and mizuki dye them and the other two do not care enough.

Hi Anéa, I hope you're well! I've been taking a look at Meg's final lair outfit as an easier way to get into Broadway costuming. Are there any specific patterns/fabrics you recommend for the vest? It looks like the breeches are corduroy fabric, and I planned to hunt for a close enough dress shirt to modify lol. Thank you so much for your time and being such an incredible resource all these years 💖💖

First of all, thank you so much for your very kind words. I have gotten some amazinly kind messages around the Broadway closing, I feel like the POTO grandma (in a good way).

As for Meg's Final Lair costume, I am tempted to show you the variety in vest patters and fabrics, so you can choose your preferred style. Note too that the pattern of the shirt + eventual contrasting details in the collar tends to vary quite a bit. So Meg's Final Lair costume is basically choosing a red/brown/greyish/black palette, with a playful combination of patterns. Textures seems to be the goal, to work in the fairly dim scene. And interestingly, most costumes seen on stage to an opposite colour combo than seen in Maria Bjørnson's design. She suggests a golden vest and red breeches, but it's more common to see golden, brown or grey/black breeches and reddish vest.

So OK, Janet Devenish in the original West End production 1986-1987. Alas a b/w photo, but comparing to smaller curtain call photos we are talking a reddish/golden vest, brownish velvet breeches and a fairly plain light blue shirt:

Her second costume in 1988 feature many of the same details, but the shirt now has cuff and collar, and the vest is darker with a rose pattern. At this point she had alo gone from a red wig to a blonde wig:

Broadway look, with red brocade vest, black trims, black breeches and a stripy tan shirt:

A rarer colour combo from Toronto, with greenish small-patterned vest with cream collar, orange/brown velvet breeches and a greyish checkered shirt:

Hillay Reiter could be seen wearing a big-patterned paisley red vest with black brocade collar and pockets, brown corduroy breeches and plain light blue shirt in the last World Tour. The vest was previously used in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico:

A vest pattern seen in many different productions (hereunder West End, Copenhagen, the World Tour and South Korea) is the burgundy one with vertical floral stripes. But the exact execution and combos varies. First photo shows Cho Ha Rin in the current South Korean production, where the vest has a stripy red/yellow collar in West End style, a remarkably patterned shirt, and dark brown velvet breeches.

A different take on the same vest pattern, but here with a collar made of the main fabric, and combined with a dotty cream shirt and brown corduroy breeches. This costume was worn by Amelia Palmiro in the last World Tour:

A general look in many European productions in recent years has been reddish paisley vests and velvet breeches. Here's Lindsey Wise in West End wearing a reddish paisley vest, brown velvet breeches and a stripy/floral tan shirt:

A last variation for now is Brianne Kelly Morgan's fairly brown costume in Las Vegas. She wore a brocaded brown/grey (?) vest, stripy brown/black velvet breeches and a plain light shirt:

This is not a complete lit of different vest patterns and their respective combos. But it gives a sense of a fair deal of liberty when you want to put together your own costume. Breeches are usually of velvet and dark, but can be black, grey, darker brown or more golden, and also both plain or corduroy/stripy. Vests are often of reddish brocades, but black, green and golden versions can also be seen. And the shirt comes in different light colours, with dots, stripes, a combination of patterns, or they are plain.

In addition to this meg usually wears thick knitted stockings, black lace books and a knitted cap to hide her hair when she first enters the lair. And of course massive harness underneath, but this is rarely if ever seen and also maybe not something you would have to reproduce for a cosplay, heh!

Quick and dirty. Literally. I dropped my deep fryer in my sink while trying to put away the used oil. Fucking horror show.

This one was so fast, I even forgot to take a photo of the marinade. It was very dark, pretty much black from the soy sauce and black vinegar, with chunks of garlic in it. I didn't have dark brown sugar, so I used golden sugar with a touch of molasses. Chinese cooking wine smells surprisingly sweet, this is the first time I've used it. And of course, Chinese five spice.

Marinated for 10 hours while I was at work, after pounding the cutlets to flatten them out a little.

Another recipe with triple step dredging. Which you know I hate. It was meant to have chili paste on the side, but the closest thing I could find was Korean hot pepper paste. Not exactly right for a Chinese pork sandwich, but the flavour profile went really nicely.

Nearly forgot to snap a photo of the plain ass sandwich, so here's a couch shot right before I bit into it. Nothing but toasted white bread, and the fried pork cutlet.

Taste was a 3 out of 5. Juicy and flavourful, but still a little dry with nothing spread on the toast.

Difficulty was a 2 out of 5. Very straightforward as long as you don't drop your deep fryer...

Time was about 20 minutes, not including marinade time.

If I made this again, I would pan fry it to make my life easier. I hate this tiny deep fryer. I would also spread the chili paste onto the toast instead of awkwardly dipping the sandwich into it.

Romeo-kun and Juliet-senpai

1 normal guy, 25 crazy girls

College first-year Romeo Adachi is a generic boy, studying to be a male witch, with a complex about his first name. In a crazy world filled with magical life forms, Romeo has no special features. Juliet Oyamada, a catgirl who is a year older than him, also has a complex about her name….

One day they meet, and end up hating each other. Then they find out each other’s first name… and chaos ensues.

Romeo and Juliet hate each other, but can’t seem to ever be separated. Especially since their families want them to get married because of their “star-crossed names.” (Even though in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the two families hated each other. Oh the irony!)

At the hidden magic college they go to, only 10% of the current student body is male. Romeo has a long time crush on the cheerful and sporty fox fauna girl, Ashley.

In Romeo’s class, there are 5 boys and 25 girls.

Romeo is an extremely plain guy surrounded by 25 crazy magic girls of all kinds of tropes. This manga is kind of a parody and the tropes are played with.

The world is a magical version of Earth. The school is a college campus that teaches magic, and is a very zany school filed with dungeons and secret rooms. There is also an adventurous twist in the story. Eventually.

The girls also all seem a bit bisexual.

A fauna is a person with animal ears and a tail.

The characters are as follows…

Tsundere girl with twintails- Juliet Oyamada the catgirl. She is messy, aggressive, bad-mannered, but has a good heart… and is surprisingly cute. She has orange hair in wavy long twintails.

Genki tomboy who loves sports- Ashley, Romeo’s initial crush and childhood friend from late elementary. A fox girl who is chaotic, uncouth, loud, deranged. She has boyish red hair.

The modest everygirl- Ichigo the dog fauna who has a crush on Romeo. Has been friends with Romeo since early high school. She has short pink hair.

Most adorable girl ever- Tomona the alien. She has pink skin, black hair, and antennae-like alien ears. Very innocent. She says “boop” after everything.

Shy nerdy book girl- Kyoko the cyclops. Kyoko is quiet, but knowlegable a wide range of subjects. She reads everything she can get her hands on. She cries easily, but hates to do so because a cyclops crying with one eye as is deemed a spectacle of sorts.

Mysterious pretentious girl- Daphne the reptile fauna dragon girl. She fakes being mysterious, basically.

Sassy gyaru girl- Leigh the bunnygirl. Leigh is confident and a bit loud, but kind and quite intelligent. She wears the gyaru fashion style and is a dancer. She is half-Uruguayan.

Masculine fighter girl- Kirara, centaur with an unfitting cute name. Kirara has a shaved head. She does martial arts, and can do a few extra moves due to being a centaur.

Dummy baka airhead girl- Hilda the chubby elfin girl. Hilda’s mind is always somewhere else. She also yells a lot. She is 4 feet and 6 inches. She is chubby.

Shy shrinking violet girl- Tasha the fairy. Tasha can shrink down to fairy size when she wants. She is very shy and doesn’t like to be seen, so it’s often. She is Black and has purple braids.

Sparkly cute idol girl- Aimi the android girl. Aimi was an android built to sing and dance, but she became sentient.

Normal tsukkomi girl- Amanda the harpy. Amanda thinks she’s the only normal person in this whole school. She constantly remarks when people are being Weird. She has a beak.

Otaku girl- Hyorin, Korean fairy girl. She moved to Japan because she loves anime. Hyorin loves the yuri genre and secretly loves girls herself… She even has two moms.

Classy well-mannered girl- Etsuko who has 3 eyes. She also has lavender skin and horns. She is classy and strict, and cannot handle uncouth things and people.

Wild girl who causes mischief- Meiran, Chinese, undead monster girl. She is always causing mischief and yelling. And living live to the extreme. And yelling.

Genius stoic emotionless girl- Zoey the serpentine girl. Nobody knows what goes on in Zoey’s head, but it’s a lot.

Sweet sleepy girl- Sonya the cyclops monster girl. She has a comfy presence. Sonya can’t wink because she has one eye. She is prone to falling asleep.

Zany inventor girl- Ayana, giraffe girl transfer student from Tanzania. She wears huge nerdy glasses. She also has a long neck. Ayana is always yelling “eureka!”

The mean queen girl- Minoru, called “Meanie” by boys, ghost undead. Minoru is your classic telenovela mean girl. Why is she so mean? What a snob.

Big sister girl- Urara is Kirara’s older sister and a centaur. Urara is very sweet, protective, and nurturing. She also gets into fights and kicks butt.

Tough punk sukeban girl- Nicole the wolf fauna. A lone wolf, who is similar to Miyu but doesn’t get along with her. They are rivals from opposing gangs. She has… you guessed it, a soft spot for cute things.

Yankee gang girl- Miyu the horned banshee. She is from an opposing gang to Nicole and clashes with her. She is always yelling and is very uncouth.

Goth musician girl- Rune the android alien girl. She loves to rock, demonic style.

Clumsy girl- Anisa the cheerful Indonesian Muslim deer fauna, a baker. She loves to cook but often spills her batter and trips over crumbs… But her cakes and cookies are usually delicious and filled with love… and sometimes random items she clumsily lost in the batter.

Edgy chuunibyou girl- Aurelia Xiomara Petrichor VII. A vampire. Yes, that’s her real name. She is pretentious and is a lord of the darkness.

The plain generic guy- Romeo Adachi. He’s so normal that it’s weird.

Obnoxious friend- Sugano the obnoxious yelling vampire. He is bald.

Handsome senpai friend- Kawamoto the sexy alien. He has a mustache.

Shy guy friend- Kizaki the ghost undead beaver fauna boy. He is soft.

Manly muscle guy friend- Nitta the fat bear fauna guy. He has a beard. He is gentle but kind of strange sometimes. Lots of muscle.

Eccentric teacher- Emma Hoshimi the art teacher is zany and eccentric

Shy teacher- Sori Lee the science teacher is always messing around in the chemistry room and causing explosions. She is very shy though.

Strict teacher- Kasey Elmer the math teacher is usually fed up with students. And life.

Protective teacher- Kendra Wilson is a nice teacher who cares deeply about the students, isn’t afraid to break up fights and get to the bottom of problems.

Romeo’s loyal mutt dog- Miso the brown shaggy dog. He looks like a bear.

An adorable cat who says “nimu nimu”- Poco is a blue cat!

A flying pig- Spot the winged pig can fly.

A little dinosaur- Toothy the little T-Rex.

A cute dragon- Garnet is an adorable dragon and a school pet.

A cute dragon- Topaz is an adorable dragon and a school pet.

A cute little mascot creature- Konamon is Juliet’s mysterious creature pet. Nobody quite knows what he is, exactly.

Tasha’s talking teddy bear- Cookie is a beloved plush from Tasha’s childhood who came to life.

Right. Found footage is, as we all know, a pretty polarizing style of horror movie. And, even though I adore it, I see why. Pervasive issues of shakycam, bad quality being used to hide sfx issues, audio problems, bad acting due to the affordability of making a found footage movie, and more can really wreck a movie. I’ve seen plenty of found footage that I just plain hated.

When found footage is done well, though, it’s very good. I’d like to offer five of my favorite found footage movies. These don’t just rely on a single, badly-used handheld camera: they get creative with the technology at hand to draw you in and help you to believe you’re watching something real.

Top Five

The Bay (2012): Mutant isopods from a polluted bay come to exact environmental revenge on a small American town.

The sheer VARIETY of kinds of footage (home video, news tapes, security cameras from a huge number of angles, police dashcam footage) makes this stand out. It’s not just one single tape telling a story of a few people--it’s a compilation of tapes that provide a wide view of a disaster befalling a whole town. YMMV on whether or not that was a good idea (I think it was), but the segment of police dashcam footage is one of the single most unsettling things I’ve ever seen.

The Tunnel: A news crew investigates a possible conspiracy involving disappearances in the sewers under Sydney, Australia, and get more than they bargained for.

The guy playing the news cameraman (Steve Davis) is actually a professional camera operator for documentaries as his day job, so the camera work is actually very exceptional and deliberate instead of handheld shakycam. It avoids a lot of the common pitfalls like disorientation or focusing on the wrong thing, and I didn’t feel like I was going to get motion sick watching it.

Host (2020): During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of friends tries to hold a seance over Zoom. It doesn’t go well.

Maximizes the fear factor of all of Zoom’s constraints, from face recognition to custom backgrounds to the number of participants in the call. It also has to pack a lot into a limited time, since the length of the movie is the length of a free Zoom call, and it does so very, very well.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum: A group of amateur Korean ghost hunters decide to livestream a lock-in at the titular asylum. This also doesn’t go well.

There’s a really novel use of techniques like GoPro cameras to bring you up close and personal with the ghosts. I almost had to take off my headphones during one scene. It also adds the unique conceit that everything is being livestreamed, which creates a layer of complication for the characters as they try to navigate the terrifying night.

V/H/S 94, “The Subject”: An Indonesian scientist building cyborgs out of unwilling participants discovers what happens when his own creations finally turn on him.

The reveal of exactly how the movie is being filmed is extraordinary. It does a great job at presenting a point of view that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, and it’s so beautifully well-handled in terms of sound design to foreshadow what’s coming. The horror is also absolutely gut-wrenching and I’m not sure I’ve ever cheered a final girl as loudly as I cheered Subject 99.

Honorable Mentions

Cloverfield: A giant monster attacks New York City and a group of friends tries to survive the night.

Although it suffers badly from shakycam and poor audio, and makes the head of the Statue of Liberty bizarrely large, the movie uses the constraints of a home video camera to give us a terrifying look at what it’s like on the ground for civilians during a kaiju attack. That’s something most modern giant monster movies neglect to give, since we see it from the perspective of scientists, soldiers, and heroes--not the innocent, hapless citizens caught in the crossfire.

Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (1998): A family Thanksgiving in rural Montana is interrupted by the arrival of Little Grey Men.

The movie effectively manipulates the constraints of a handheld camera’s limited view (keeping the viewer wondering what’s happening behind the character with a camera), which is quite nice. More importantly, though, it pulled a full “War of the Worlds” by presenting itself as a factual documentary (with no disclaimers), resulting in a fair amount of public concern, speculation, and paranoia. This was a year before Blair Witch Project came out with its early-Internet ARG stylings, so that’s even cooler to me.

Grave Encounters: A ghost hunt goes terribly wrong during an overnight lock-in. Anything else would spoil the story.

Troll Hunter (2010): A small group of students follows around a professional troll hunter in Norway to learn about his work and the mythical trolls he hunts.

V/H/S, “Amateur Night”: Three friends attempt to pick up girls at a bar. Filmed with a camera hidden in a pair of glasses, we get a front-row seat to what happens when one of the girls turns out to be more than meets the eye.

V/H/S, “Tuesday the 17th”: Out in the woods, a bizarre entity that appears only as camera glitches hunts and kills a group of friends one by one.

[REC]: Zombies attack inside a Spanish apartment building--and when the doors are locked, the residents are left to fend for themselves to survive.

Noroi: The Curse: This “documentary” tells the story of a paranormal researcher who attempts to uncover the secrets of the supernatural in Japan, only to find himself caught up in the very curse he investigates.
