felt like talking about megaten demons again so here’s some official art of demons based on mostly american horror/sci-fi.

list of names n extra notes:

audrey (audrey ii from little shop of horrors), betelgeuse (beetlejuice from… y’know, beetlejuice), chris the car (christine the car from christine), nickelwise (pennywise from it), friday (jason voorhees from friday the 13th), franken (frankenstein’s monster from frankenstein), terminator (similar to the t-800 from terminator), scanner (likely a reference to the movie scanners), and hierophant (pinhead from hellraiser).

yeah hierophant is an alternative nickelwise which is why i’m putting it here despite the hellraiser franchise spawning from britain. idk how hierophant got that name since i don’t remember anything in at least the first hellraiser that could warrant the alternative name. (could’ve called it idk spikehead if they wanted to avoid copyright.) technically this might not be the first time a demon’s design was inspired by cenobites as lucifer’s infamous redesign for 4 closely resembles them. similar reasoning for franken, being an english work. like stated before, most of these are taken from american works, especially stephen king.

there’s more stephen king demons, though like many enemies exclusive to persona 1 and is/ep, only spritework exists, my personal favorite being carrie. kinda a shame there’s been no character or persona in persona inspired by her, since the og book and film adaptations are the trippiest “dangers of extreme religious worship”/child abuse is wrong/anti-bullying things i’ve ever seen. (there’s also a movie sequel that’s basically the first with less religious extremism and more goth icon/dangers of frat boy culture/really good rock backing tracks.) idk the concept of psychic girl who gets bullied a ton feels like it would be right at home as an atlus rerelease extra girl.

of course terminator sticks out too. when it comes to forgotten smt demon, terminator is an icon in that department. outside of the guns being the same and being (presumably) a robot (idk i haven’t gotten around to playing smt 2 yet but there’s a lot of more mechanical demons based on all the art i’ve seen), the name is the closest it really is to resembling the t-800s. idk to me it feels like it’s different enough that bringing it back in at least one future megaten game wouldn’t be that much of an issue compared to other horror icon references. they could just change the guns/ditch the guns altogether and change the name. really cool overall.

scanner is another weird one that i kinda wanna see again just because it sounds like it could be cool. dude only appears in smt 1, and while fan wikis aren’t super reliable sources, because it gave off that “this has to be some reference to a cheesy 80s movie” vibe, i dug into the origins more. yeah there’s a canadian fic called scanners and yeah scanner is 100% based on the whole idea of scanners in the film. never seen it nor heard of it, but hey the director, david cronenberg, also directed the fly so it’s probably a fun watch.

friday’s design is technically wrong though it’s also kinda not. despite jason most often using a machete (and preferring to kill horny teens), a lot of references have him using a chainsaw.

chris the car is technically not completely gone. of course the idea of ghost drivers and the like in media are nothing new (though the car itself is the killer in christine) so for all i know i’m overthinking it or it’s a coincidence, but oboroguruma—a demon exclusive to dsrk 1 and 2–seems to take some design inspiration, having a similar destroyed bumper/grill with an exposed motor.

lastly, while not pictured here or anything, something i found out one time is that lucifer’s favorite fake name, louis cyphre, is a reference to the novel falling angel/its film adaptation, angel heart, though none of the various disguises resemble how he looks in the film. idk i found that an interesting tidbit.

kaneko was apparently into western media (which is unsurprising) so that’s likely the reason there was so many of these movie references during the earlier days of megaten. what i’m sure is due to copyright, many of these older demons never appeared again. copyright law does vary in different places and i’m sure for the few jjba fans who are reading this, you know just how lax japan is in comparison likely due to being western stuff and most copyright holders don’t have that much of an international grip. unless you’re disney. with the whole localization effort atlus might’ve not wanted to have to change a bunch of shit which i don’t blame them for. though with the existence of nickelwise and hierophant coming from tokyo mirage sessions, a pretty recent game (released in 2015 and rereleased on the switch in 2020) that doesn’t seem to have run into copyright issue or had to take them out in the rerelease as far as i’m aware, it’s not entirely impossible to see anything similar again. it is kinda sad though.

1. Why do I like this ship?

I guess the short answer is that I always get into a ship when I can see myself in the characters involved & I can see them loving each other that I want to be loved, and by far steddie are the closest to all of those things in any types of media I’ve seen (maybe the next closest is bbc Sherlock’s johnlock lmao) But the long answer is —I mean, I am a bi disaster myself, a lanky ass dude with dark curly hair and dark eyes who grew up closeted in a small town, and I spent a big portion of my teen years living with someone else other than my immediate family who was absent. I was known as a jock in high school, musician to those who knew me better, and secretly a big fuckin nerd who enjoy metal music in my own time. I knew monsters from whom I got PTSD, and I have both emotional/physical scars that will last me a lifetime. I really think steve and Eddie compliment each other because the way they need love & want to love are similar—and it happens to be the way I want it as well. So it’s really important for me to have these two idiots who share my past and present fall in love, you know?

14. Steve joining corroded coffin or just a fan?

Honestly????????? Kind of neither. Now don’t hate me just yet…. I just think that Steve would definitely supportive, but not necessarily in love (!) with the music itself. I believe he’ll be a fan of Eddie (eventually) and will help out here and there when they need it, maybe during the early days if they later become famous etc. but I feel like he wouldn’t really know or understand the ethos of CC. Like he’ll go along with it and will make it to the gigs and performances concerts etc but he’ll also have ear plugs with him bc it hurts his ears and he’s already suffering from head trauma ☠️Idk that’s my HC so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

16. Overdone HC

Again: I’ll premise it by saying that I absolutely love these overdone HCs: Eddie realizing that he’s gay before Steve realizing his own sexuality. The most common fanon I’d say is 1) Eddie knowing he’s gay whether he has experience or not 2) Steve’s bisexual awakening is Eddie and he consults Robin about it 3) Eddie being a flirty motherfucker whilst Steve (who’s normally smooth) being very flustered ™. Now I fuckin love this shit SO much and will read the hell out of it every time. But I do want more of oblivious Eddie whose sexuality crisis is super delayed bc of whatever reason, and Steve understanding / being well versed with the language of attraction from a young age regardless of gender, therefore having these epiphanies before even meeting Robin. Growing up I didn’t have a Robin 😭and I needed to figure shit out on my own. It was pretty apparent to me that I wasn’t straight since I was 12 or 13, and I want to see Steve in a similar situation who help Eddie navigate that!!! Which is why I’m writing a new fic exactly about this lmao. (Shameless promo)

Power Rangers: Once & Always

My husband and I watched this last weekend because we have shared childhood nostalgia for the OG series, which was extremely fun, and now I have thoughts! A random list of thoughts!

Thoughts Like:

Me literally every second Kat was onscreen: screaming, crying, hearts streaming out of my eyes, etc. MY GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are an equal-opportunity Red/Pink Ranger shipper in this house so as clumsy and awkward as I found most of the reminders that he and Kat are married*, I ate them up with a soup ladle.

(*were? idk feels uncomfortably like you could read this equally well as them being co-parenting divorcees on friendly terms, perhaps to appease the rabid OG shippers without pissing off canon purists, but in the absence of Amy Jo, NOT TODAY SATAN).

I was...Not expecting Trini to die on screen, even just by being hit with a blast and dropping out of sight. YIKE.

Although I did appreciate how much that made this movie feel like a fanfic that magically got filmed.

Uncle Zack just rolling up to move in and guardianship Trini’s daughter full time, SURE!!!!!

Was her name always pronounce Tree-nee?? I know I didn’t watch as much of the original lineup compared to Zeo and Turbo, but it’s always been in my head as “Trinny.” It was so jarring, every time. Is my memory that bad or is this like a Modern Day Fix where they got schooled by actual Vietnamese people.

I still require more explanation as to why they have ranger powers at this age. I thought Passing Them On was sort of...a key part of being rangers? I mean I don’t know that much about the mythology because this was strictly a teen drama to me and I fast-forwarded most of the fight scenes and battles but...

Trini’s daughter is

adorable

and I would almost commit to watching a season she was part of. The 2017 reboot film wants what this character’s energy has.

IMMENSELY hilarious to me every time Zack acted like it was unreasonable for a teenager with homework to want to be a ranger, btw.

I will say that her fight against the putties all alone really drove home how young the characters were always supposed to be. Wild visualizing rangers being actual minors.

I was never very attached to Billy and even less attached to Zack (truly the only person who was a greater non-entity to me than the latter was Rocky or perhaps Jason), so kudos to this movie making me care about them. Especially Billy. Oh my god I loved that final forgiveness convo so much.

Husband, howling with laughter at the cringe-worthy single DIVERSITY! moment: “Would you commit vehicular manslaughter for gay rights?? Only true allies need apply.”

I LOVE THE MONSTER DUDES. Especially the snakey guy, my beloved. It was very hard to root for them to be defeated, let alone straight-up murdered. (which, for all Zack kept scolding about, sure looks like revenge to me!! my husband kept trying to explain to me that it was justice and there is a difference, but everyone who claims that is wrong)

Robo Rita is also most excellent.

This movie was way more stabby than I remember the tv show being. did they always have daggers??

I know I said that I mostly skipped the fight scenes/battles, but sometimes I made exceptions for the OG series because the animal zords were actually pretty cool, unlike the later cars. Until they become a giant robot, at least, I kind of love them, so that was fun to see. I also really like the power disks w/ the animals etched on them.

...MEMORY BLAST we used to have a bunch of those from McDonald’s happy meals, I think when the OG movie came out? Now I am weirdly sad they’re all long gone.

I don’t actually remember the episode they used the nostalgic clips from at the end but oh my god that was a perfect choice. Moderately hilarious that after a whole movie of reminding us that Tommy has a kid with Kat, the clip is clearly as much Tommy Makes Heart Eyes At Kimberly as anything else, but again, equal-opportunity shipper here so it’s cool and I appreciate the gift. Also a good reminder I need to go listen to her music again, her voice is so pretty.

In conclusion: basically we got a bonus 3-part episode 30 years later and I think that is very special and my heart is very full. No complaints. :*)

Why Gabriel Agreste Should Have His Kneecaps Stolen

Good grief this dude ~Has *repeatedly* said he wants to rule the world ((in addition to his wish to resurrect Emilie; in fact, it was the first thing he ever said he wanted (Origins) and I really don’t think it was a red herring considering the actions that followed)) ~tried to pawn Ladybug's earrings AND Chat’s ring AS GABRIEL. How did he think that would go??? ~Uses as many as, if not more puns than his son (but they’re much worse) ~Akumatized himself?? Bro is dumb but not an idiot ~BATTED HIS SON OUT OF THE AIR LIKE SOME KIND OF DESPICABLE BABE RUTH WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ~Does not like being around people (fair) ~Thought that he could make an akumatized baby work ~Knows very well that LB and CN are teens but he's very determined to obliterate them so that's fun ~Wanted to start WORLD WAR 3?? Like come on dude what on earth were you thinking??? ~When he thought Adrien was Chat Noir his response was to DROP HIS SON OFF A BUILDING ~Is extremely abusive like dude honestly ~Isolates and neglects his son for his whole life and then is like "kids should be able to do whatever and yadda yadda yadda" ~The only times he allows Adrien to do something he always has an ulterior motive and it's almost never in Adrien's best interest. I feel like people would start to notice his window opening and closing all the time lol. ~Gabe really backfired with his "let's akumatize a robot" plan, like that was an all time low ~Hawkmoth knows that akumatizing Marienette would be just about the smartest thing he could do as a villain. Obviously he doesn't know the biggest reason that this will work in his favor, but he knows that she would make a very strong supervillain. I'm very worried about this as A) he's right and B) it's probably foreshadowing ~Was about to let Feast eat every single miraculous known to France if he succeeded?? I mean, dude has nerve. ~HE HAS AN AGREEMENT WITH KAGAMI'S MOTHER??? WHAT IS THIS ABOUT??????? ~PRIORITIZES BEING HAWKMOTH OVER BEING A DECENT FATHER AND HUMAN BEING ~Like he says "this is so Adrien can be happy" and blah blah blah but doesn't even tell his son or ask him what he thinks or anything UGH ~Has literally no qualms about any destruction that might be caused by his or his akumas' actions. How were the builders not suspicious? Who decorated these places? How does he cover up however he got all his butterflies? ~THIS MAN IS LITERALLY STUNTING THE GROWTH OF EVERYONE IN PARIS BECAUSE THEY DON'T LEARN HOW TO DEAL WITH THEIR EMOTIONS Obviously the game is changing as people are more used to akumas and LB's lucky charms are going into circulation, but some people aren't strong enough to fight off akumas! Only THREE PEOPLE have done it (Chloe, Alya, and Nino). Mr. Ramier was akumatized SEVENTY-TWO times and what do you think he learned from that??? NOTHING THAT'S WHAT. Because rather than having the ability to work out their emotions and deal with them accordingly, Parisians get akumatized and then forget everything that happened. They are very emotionally unstable, and we can very clearly see why! And them being weakened works in Hawky's favor. It's disgusting and I really hope everyone in Paris gets therapy or something. ~He flung a random teenager (Fei) by the arm through a waterfall and into a very deep well like some kind of despicable frisbee ~More evidence that he quite literally does not care about his son's needs if they get in the way of his villainism. The only time during Shanghai that he is concerned about Adrien is when the monster HE CREATED is about to destroy the whole city ~Since when has he called Marinette by her full name and HOW ON EARTH DOES HE NOT KNOW SHE'S LADYBUG ~Maybe he'll figure it out now, idk ~Also whatever this Prodigious is it has been made quite clear that Hawkmoth has been in the works long before Gabriel started sending out akumas. I strongly strongly suspect that there's something about Adrien we don't know yet because if this villainism has been in the works for 15 YEARS?? Yeah something is up. And, as has been stated by another fandom member... Mama Agreste might not be as great as we were led to believe. ~Gabe may have diverted his attention from Adrien being Chat but he is definitely, definitely suspicious of Marinette, I'm telling you ~His voice got more evil over time I swear ~Also again he was only worried about Adrien (before his plan backfired severely, AGAIN LOL) and not that the akuma might kill literally thousands of people in Shanghai, haha way to go Gabe ~Yeah sorry Mari but Hawky takes no vacations ~HE WENT AFTER NEW MAGIC AND THEN BECAME SHADOW MOTH?? W H A T ~Kay so apparently Shadowmoth is much smarter than Hawky. At least... more tactical. And he accepts help from Nathalie. But he still ain't winning lol, even if he's getting closer. ~And even though he was *this close* to getting the turtle miraculous, he was even closer to getting HIS TWO MIRACULOUS STOLEN ~STOP REAKUMATIZING PEOPLE, IT'S NOT GONNA WORK ANYMORE ~On Mr. Pigeon's 24th akumatization Hawky was really like "this man is hopeless" and proceeds to akumatize him 48 more times ~I love how he assumes he's still gonna be Hawkmoth by the time LB and CN are adults XD like he'd literally be in his 70s ~the fact that he had every single miraculous holder in one place and didn't realize it ~I love how he has no problem letting Alec watch his whole villain spiel ~mans really said that negative emotions turn him on ~the fact that one of his smarter villains was a five year old -_-

the devil judge + the seven deadly sins

so, i made a gifset about who i thought falls under the seven deadly sins. and also shameless plug - please go reblog the gifset i made for this. took me ages to do.

but i figured i might as well make a meta post to correlate. so this is that post. it’s not everything i could discuss. i could be here for hours more, truth be told. but i hope it’s enough to chew on.

while i feel like a lot of these are going to be a no-brainer, i still want to talk it through because idk. i can, and i want to, and i feel like it, lmao.

gluttony

the elite are privileged and have an opportunity to indulge so much more than the general public, but in many different ways. this is shown throughout the show in the fact that they can indulge on luxury food, have political power, they can make a phone call or snap their fingers and everyone must follow their orders.

and the thing about gluttony is that there is always more to be had. you take a little and then realize it’s not enough and so you ask for more. case in point: in episode 11 when sunah suggests that yohan could be the new president, the current one gives her an alternative: dictatorship. because it wasn’t just enough for him to be an actor and the presiding president.

you’ll also know they turn in on themselves - the two other guys in the elite group. one who owns the company and the other dude - i really cannot remember their names and what they do, but y’all know who i’m talking about. it was so easy for them, when threatened, to fabricate documents to give to yohan about each other in order to get ahead. gluttony is only shared in the relationships we have until one realizes they can take a little extra of the pie. it’s the selfishness of having all the leftovers. gluttony cannot necessarily exist without someone else’s sacrifice.

lust

i kind of had an ah-ah moment when i was talking this over with @technitango. i was trying to decide who was going to be lust because lust is portrayed very, very differently in this show than what most of us are used to. we, of course, know sunah who lusts after a life of indulgence and riches because she equates that with respect more than actually wanting it because it’s monetarily worth something.

but then i realized the public is lust because of their need for justice. i won’t say revenge necessarily because they’re doing as they’re told when given the judge show. but we can quickly see how that evaporates into something akin to bloodlust, for criminals and people who normally get away with shit, to have their fair taste at conviction for their misdeeds. we even see it with yohan’s fanboy club - the lust that comes from adoration and dedication.

and even more so, the public is easily swayed and so is the nature of lust. it follows in the vein of needs and wants, and as soon as new information is presented, however may false, so does the wants and desires of what people want sway. how easy was it for them to turn on yohan for a split second on two occasions - on two accounts of bribery.

envy

envy, above all, is about wanting what others have because you do not have it yourself. it may not be exactly what they have, but a form of it. some people don’t necessarily want money - they want what it can by, which is time, health and material goods.

sunah is the perfect example of this. she envies respect and recognition. she talks about bright and shiny objects, and that’s true to her kleptomania tendences, but more than anything, she wants to be seen as an equal because being poor with a vastly different upbringing means she’s looked down upon by those she thinks matters.

which also begs the question why she feels the need to seek validation from people in higher statuses to begin with when she can be the exception and not the rule - form her own understanding and environment to show others that the typical way of the elite is not actually all it’s cracked up to be - to which we see when she has no one to celebrate her victory with. it’s lonely being at the top. you get to your goal you thought you wanted but then what?

more importantly, sunah also envies family, relationships and simply put, human interaction. she wants to be cared for and treasured, and she looks for that in her position of power. because then all eyes are on you. because then that’s what people care about. what she fails to see is that those eyes are just as fruitless and just as wavering. to be a leader means people loving the idea of you but not you as a person.

“people of envious nature are sometimes stimulated to seek to emulate those who have completed some great achievements and in doing so achieve something great for themselves,” according to Understanding Philosophy.

wrath

while i realize that gaon not might entirely fit the wrath trope, he certainly has his moments, and i think he’s lived with a tampered flame since his parent’s death. he just learned to briefly put it out in the form of distractions and a false sense of righteousness and justice. it isn’t until he meets yohan that someone finally gives him the okay to feel the entirety of his emotions, that lets him breath and tells him it’s okay to feel anger and hurt. and while gaon ultimately chooses not to exact revenge, his wrath is what led him to becoming a judge and walking away from his teenage crimality.

gaon transposed his wrath into seeking justice, transformed it into livelihood, and reformed his narrative so that he was no longer angry and a teen with rash emotions. it was simply redirected and never really forgotten. yohan turned that redirection back around onto gaon’s ultimate heartache. fueled with that, it became easier to justify himself and his actions.

the most pivotal moment of turning his back on this mindset is, of course, the minister’s suicide, where he takes a good look at himself and doesn’t like what he sees. at this point, gaon’s upset isn’t necessarily at yohan but at the situation in which they got themselves into. because the thing is, gaon doesn’t absolve himself from what they did. he doesn’t turn a blind eye to that and try to dismiss it. he owns up to what happened and confesses how he feels to yohan and how he has to leave for his own good, and in some indirect way, for yohan’s, too.

with yohan, his ultimately weakness, despite never admitting to it, is family. his wrath comes in the form of anger when the ones he loves are threatened. yohan lives by a moral code of loyalty because that means you won’t be abandoned, and as a child who lived with that verdict since the day he was born, it’s an ever-pressing theme of his.

thing is, wrath comes in two particular forms for yohan. again, one is family and the second is the rose-colored glasses he’s given himself in his revenge story. he’s always had a goal to presumably make right the wrong for taking away isaac, but within that, 10 years is a long time to plot revenge, to the point where it becomes so much easier to lose yourself to that, to become enraged with it and forget the initial goal all along. we see this in his inability to form the bonding moments needed with his niece and his casual throwaway comments over people’s lives - the comment he made to gaon about moving on to the next plan, and the ultimately nail in the coffin of pushing gaon to leaving him.

his fury has also led him to convince himself his own humanity is nothing short of a lie. therefore, it’s easier to justify the means to an end because of his own self-worth and self-deprecation. it’s almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy: he even admitted to gaon’s mentor that he is an abyss. he’s referred to himself as nothing but an animal or a monster - all characteristics of despondency to survive and to justify what he’s doing. sort of like a catch 22, yohan claims he’s an animal/monster and behaves as such, but because he behaves as such, it means he’s an animal/monster.

wrath for gaon and yohan are very different yet the same. they are slow-burning, and that’s a dangerous type. it’s actually interesting when you think about the fire imagery surrounding the two of them because flames are quick to lap at anything in its wake, to destroy within a matter of minutes. and yet for the two of these men, their internal fire eats them from the inside out, painfully, until they’re almost unrecognizable to others and to themselves.

sloth

sloth was a little more difficult to pinpoint because of its characteristics. it was either the minister versus the mentor, both of which i think could work in this role. however, i chose the minister simply because she’s featured more and intertwines heavily with the plot line.

soth is a medieval translation of the Latin term acedia, meaning “without care.”

the ultimate characteristic of sloth is often identified as laziness, and while it’s easy to argue that the minister hasn’t been lazy in her ability to get where she is, she became as much when she started lying to get to her position. isn’t lying known as the easier way out? it absolves you of responsibility, of putting in the hard work, of apologizing and making things right. in the end, she had a goal and found the easiest solution to get there through her lack of responsibility for the roles she more than likely swore an oath to.

but that also translates into the other attributes of sloth: a failure to do the right thing, lack of emotions for people or of the self, and the fact that it “hinders man in his righteous undertakings and thus becomes a terrible source of man’s undoing” according to The Seven Deadly Sins: Society and Evil.

while i think there are a lot of components of sloth that may not necessarily fit the minister, the apathy and carelessness are enough to showcase her aggression, despondency and restlessness when what little efforts she does put in do not go her way. another interesting thing to note is that many of sloth’s traits correspond with symptoms of mental illness, such as depression and anxiety. it’s an interesting thing to note given the way the minister chooses to end her life.

greed

i don’t know that jinjoo would’ve had any provocation to the limelight if it wasn’t for sunah’s direction, but she’s eager to please and wants to be useful. it’s only natural for her to want more because it’s clear she’s a career woman, loves her job and has a heart for serving the people.

but like gluttony, greed is also that little thing that plants itself and can take on a life of its own. you start looking for justifications as to why you can’t have more than what you do, and in jinjoo’s situation, she’s already overlooked through no fault of her own. and it’s not that gaon and yohan are doing it purposefully, which is what makes their neglect heartbreaking, because truthfully, they’re after the same thing jinoo is. sure, it looks different and the foundation of it is different, same with their motives. but they’re all three judges on a residing bench working to exact justice - even if all three of them have their own personal agenda.

i don’t think jinoo fully aligns with greed, but she does want more for herself, and i think that’s only natural. you can tell she has a heart, and she’s keen not to be overlooked. this isn’t her pain point so much as it is she knows her worth and is more than ready to do what it takes to get where she wants. this, in and of itself, isn’t necessarily a bad trait, but we can see how it leads to being deceived, especially for someone who’s been left in the dark for so long.

she is enticed by the glitz and the glamour of being a head judge, but you can tell she feels some remorse and guilt for those thoughts at times. i think her sense of greed is a battle within herself more than it is extremely outwardly.

pride

soohyun’s pride comes in the form of her imbalance with right and wrong. her sense of righteousness and justice is so far leaning, even more than gaon’s. it can be chalked up to her being a cop, but we’ve seen instances of this outside of her role within that agency. her pride doesn’t let her see beyond saving gaon and getting to the bottom of every mystery that comes her way.

it also comes in the form of impulsiveness and her savior complex, putting elijah in danger, for example, instead of waiting for backup. it’s not necessarily from a belief that she can fix things all on her own, but she sees injustice and immediately jumps in. another case in point is her and gaon watching yohan wreck the minister’s son’s car. she’s ready to go stop him, but gaon pulls her back, most likely because at that point, they hadn’t been observing the situation for very long to get a read on it. also the fact that at that point, neither of them truly knew yohan and his capabilities.

but as to where her characteristics come from, we simply don’t know beyond that of gaon. it’s unfortunate because we don’t have much of her backstory, so there is no real understanding why she so firmly believes in entities of regulation beyond keeping her friend out of jail. she prides herself on her work and what she’s able to accomplish, which is why it’s devastating to her to have to protect gaon by cleaning up his bloody handprint.

aristotle is of the belief that, “pride, then, seems to be a sort of crown of the virtues; for it makes them greater, and it is not found without them. Therefore it is hard to be truly proud; for it is impossible without nobility and goodness of character,” from Nicomachean Ethics.

but pride for soohyun isn’t about honors or rewards. it’s for herself and her capabilities, her ability to protect gaon, and the virtues she’s set as the precedent for herself. because sometimes it’s not even about establishing morals and ethics upon yourself. it’s about feelings/intuition, logic and observation. and no, i don’t mean the feelings she has for gaon. there are things that humans do, both actions and words, that we inherently know are bad without someone telling us as much and without the rules of the world seared into our brains. there are some things we know, for a fact, are wrong to us as individuals.

for soohyun, she knows that gaon’s actions, and even her own, have consequences. from what we’ve seen, i think it can be argued that it’s really about not doing those actions to prevent an outcome - not necessarily from a place of being just and right. that doesn’t mean she doesn’t understand good morals/ethics, but again, we have no background of what her internal guidance actually is.

to put this in layman’s terms, we’ll use gaon wanting to stab the conman in his youth. soohyun knows it’s wrong because it will incriminate gaon and therefore she stops it. gaon’s gone to her because he sees her as a moral compass. but is her own internal navigation rooted in justice the way gaon had to find it in the judicial system, or is hers rooted in her pride of keeping gaon safe? she stops him from doing things that will get him in trouble, but is she stopping him because the action itself is wrong or because the outcome will result in undesirable consequences for the two of them?

and of course, there is a flipped argument to be had there - i’m not arguing that gaon stabbing the conman would be right or justified. but what i am saying is that for her, her worldview is the only right one, and when anyone steps out of that, even gaon, it becomes a bit of an issue: the pride she has for that is palpable.

every character indulges

truthfully, every character has at least one form of these sins rooted in their characterization. some are larger than others, but the breadth of it can be explored even further for each. and that’s what makes them more realistic and not just characters written on a page or following a linear progression of their writing deity.

the seven deadly sins are also notoriously rooted in religion. they’re also a defining feature of aristotle’s works that represent the golden mean, in which each vice is parallel to a virtue.

the devil judge is so layered, but i think at the heart of it, it’s about humanity at its core. sprinked in are the philosophies and contradictions and what it means to look in the mirror, what happens when we’re blind to seeing our true selves and most importantly, how much changes when we’re swayed by our own misgivings. it really asks us to understand nature versus nurture, that people must find a belief in something to keep them going, and how futile our hopes and desires can actually be if we’re not carefully regulating ourselves, nevermind the entities established by society to regulate us, too.

the entirety of the show genuinely begs the question as to who is truly right, who is truly wrong, and if it’s even possible to find the correct answer.

First off I just wanna say holy shiz! My last post did really good! So thank you guys for the support, liking, reblogging, following me and my content. I know it's just a basic nostalgia blog but it's really cool to know that some really like the stuff I post.

I always try to post stuff that is nostalgic to me but also stuff others might find nostalgic as well because this blog isn't just about me it's about you as well but anyways I saw this post a while back about what you searched up on YouTube as a kid and I thought hey why not do this myself! I thought it would be a neat little idea that would bring us together more and let you cool dudezzzzz get to know me so with all that said let's get to it! (Also I apologize if its absolutely cringe lol!)

1. Salad fingers

So pretty much everyone knows who and what salad fingers is we don't really have to get into it but idk how but I was just never scared of it. I remember as a child one of my friends was terrified of salad fingers yet I somehow was okay with it. I remember seeing a fake episode of it and it being a rickroll because that was sorta popular back than. I think salad fingers is pretty cool tbh its neat.

2. Wasabi Productions

This was a channel I frequented quite a bit. It had some really funny humor at the time I mean I was a kid so really anything was funny most of the time. The channel imo was just sorta random and the humor was pretty random. Humor in this era of YouTube was just something else lol.

3. Simply Spoons

Don't remember this one as much tbh but my friend at the time loved like absolutely LOVED One Direction and we would sometimes watch this channel and this person would do prank calls while trying to impersonate Harry Styles and etc. Because my friend at the time was super into 1D we checked out a lot of 1D content.

4. The Adventurous Adventures of One Direction

Another gem of 1D content was these videos. We watched them a lot everytime a new video came out we would check it out. I don't know if I have a lot to say about this channel except for that most of the content was 1D and cartoons. I think the person still posted some 1D videos so if you want to check it out I will leave links below.

5. SophieGTV

Okay imma get to it because I know what some of you guys are thinking yes I absolutely loved LPS Popular lol but actually just Sophie's stuff altogether I really liked also SHES CANADIAN LIKE ME! Not many youtubers I know are from Canada so that's really heccin cool but anyways I loved her channel as a kid if you were talking to lil me I would probably say shes my favorite YouTuber. Sophie doesn't post much anymore but I remember when EVERYONE wanted a face reveal but I hope she is doing well now. She posted one year ago but hasn't posted since.

6. LPS popular

Hunny you know it. You know it. *insert will Smith that's hot that's hot* I know i just posted that i loved this series but really though this was my YouTube childhood I was absolutely in love with this series. The tea! The tea! I can't I used to binge this series all the time I remember my old friend absolutely loved this channel. Dude I miss being a kid sometimes with a wild and wacky imagination if I were a kid again I would totally rebinge this series lol!

7. LPSHannah

This girls channel was also amazing I didn't watch her videos a lot but I definitely liked a good handful of em. Her channel was just really cool and she did a face reveal! I don't know when but its definitely surprising! She sadly stopped making videos though (just checked big sad) do to coppa but I hope what she is doing is making her really happy and all the best to her. You can now find her posting on Hannah's Haven.

8. NamanthaSuxx

I wanna say she is also Canadian but honestly I have zero clue. I used to watch her channel sometimes when she would post videos about Monster High because at the time I was into those dolls which idk for sure but I think might be coming back? Anyways i wasnt as into the channel as my friend who introduced me to Namantha's channel.

9. Jpopluvr1000

Okay idk if this persons channel was always named this but I remember looking at their channel because they made a lot of Bratz themed videos and well me I am a Bratz fan and I remember this person got I think all or almost every 10th anniversary Bratz doll and making a video on it. I was really into Bratz maybe even more than Monster High tbh like those dolls were made the year I was born. Getting real for a moment but it is crazy knowing that they will be having their 20th anniversary and I am really hyped for the new dolls like honestly I love the screening and it might even be better than the last dolls lol but anyways I loved this persons channel it was great.

10. Webkinz, LPS, Bratz and monster high pool party videos

This one is just one big group because all were under the same thing. I really liked and still like swimming and so that's probably why I liked these videos as a kid there are some I watched but can't remember the name of at the moment and YouTube doesn't let you make it so you can find old videos easily especially if you can't remember them. I did remember I watched StarryStarr33 and I think strawberry516 but I don't know about strawberry for sure.

11. Smosh

The duo Ian and Anthony were sorta like a must watch on YouTube back in the day. They were just really big and it was difficult to ignore how popular they were on the site for a while. I loved their Honey Boo Boo video and I also remember watching Ian and Anthony open things on another channel. The humor was also very YouTubery it probably wouldn't be good in professional stuff but for teens and kids at the time most of us thought it was pretty funny.

12. Bratz collection

Just like jpopluvr1000 I just really liked Bratz dolls and collections of them.

13. LPS music videos

Didn't matter what it was I loved LPS as a kid so I was willing to watch anything with them.

14. KyleMonkey

My sister showed me this weird dude who made a video with him just eating chapstick and another of him farting, spitting out grapes and just being crazy and yeah honestly idk what to say about this dude lol

15. Key of Awesome

Didn't check them out a whole lot tbh but I enjoyed some of their parodies

16. Fred

Everyone acts like the didn't watch him but you know some of them have. I liked watching his videos as a kid I remember when one of them was rated for older people for no reason. Also is it just me or did anyone else like his songs?

17. The Annoying Orange

Same deal just orange and an orange. These videos were cool I remember when Fred and him had that lil vs battle thingy you kinda just had to be there to understand the hype about the annoying orange. The humor has died out but it was a nice thing while it lasted unless you got easily annoyed.

18. Wafflepwn and the greatest freakout ever

I remember watching these videos with my friend at the time we just thought it was the most hilarious thing honestly the first video where the dude stick a remote up his butt still makes me chuckle somehow but I remember my dad being very upset when he saw I watched these videos and also having a difficult time coming to the fact that SPOILER ALERT!

It was fake all along. If people didn't know that you know these videos would be extremely problematic.

Conclusion: YouTube still felt so new and different at this time and things were growing although a lot of the humor would not fly for understandable reasons I feel like it was charming and I was very lucky I got to be on YouTube. I was very young so a lot of the channels I watched were more kiddy and childish but it felt sweet and nice. A lot of these channels were so cool and sometimes I would stay up late and watch them. With all that said I will probably make a second one of these. I was very unsure whether or not I wanted to post this because a part of me thought it would be cool but another felt like it would be cringy and wanna know what? It's both lol that's my entire conclusion this post was cool, fun and very very cringy but hey why not make another again sometimes? the TUA camp counselor au i’ve been thinking of all day

(my only braincell rubbed two sticks together and made a whole idea)

AU/Headcanon where all the Hargreeves siblings (around age 16ish) get to go be counselors at a summer camp. and idk i might write a real fanific about it but whatever ( I did >>> link)

-Reginald has to go do shady alien business out of the country for 2 months, so he wants to sent the kids to a military style training camp

-Mom and Pogo “accidentally” send the kids to be camp counselors at a sleep-away camp so they can be regular teenagers

-the kids at the camp are like 8-12 ish

-all the siblings have different jobs/activities to lead and also have like a cabin group to watch over at night

-they also try to hide their powers and the umbrella academy stuff

-Luther is #stressed because they are disobeying dad, but is kinda excited to be in charge

-he leads a lot of the team sports and makes sure everyone is playing fair

-the little kids like to climb on him because he so strong and can throw them like 20 feet in the air

-he does not tolerate any bullying and can put the older kids in their place

- Diego thinks it’s stupid and doesn’t want to go, but he does like disobeying dad

- gets in trouble immediately for bringing like 10 knives to a children’s camp

- people think he’s cool tho, all the tween girls have a crush on him

- leads a lot of the independent sports, like archery and rock climbing

- Luther and Diego have the same cabin group of boys, which makes them argue a lot

-Luther takes the kids stargazing everynight

- Diego tries to start a secret fight club of 12 year old boys

- the camp owners daughter is kinda crazy and keeps trying to get diego to sneak out with her

-Allison is stoked to go to camp and talk to people who aren’t her siblings

-her cabin group of little girls thinks she the prettiest girl in the whole world

- she also shares her cabin group with the quiet girl who likes to read a lot

-they have girls night and do hair and paint each other’s nails

- she is in charge during wreck time and mostly just lets the kids do whatever

- when the kids act up she rumors them into chilling the fuck out

- the hiking counselor is a really nice boy and asks her to take a walk with him after dinner

- when they’re together Allison feels like a regular girl

- Luther isn’t sad about it

- Klaus is here to party

- all the movies say that summer camp is where you get fucked up

- he brings a shit ton of weed

- he gets put in charge of the art/craft table and he makes soooo many friendship bracelets (and burns himself with the hot glue gun, like a billion times)

- he teaches the little kids cuss words

-he also ditches a lot to go smoke/drink in the woods

- one of the lifeguards is really cute and giving off the vibes, so Klaus pretends to not know how to swim and starts fake drowning

- hunky lifeguard boy comes to save him and offers to give klaus one-on-one swimming lessons

- ....they don’t spend much time swimming

-Ben is ambivalent about camp because he doesn’t want anyone to see his stomach monster, but anything is better than staying at the academy all summer

- he forgot to bring extra clothes but he brought a whole duffel bag of books

- he doesn’t talk much and lets the kids do whatever while he reads on the sidelines

- the only time he raises his voice is when he enforces quiet time

- wears all of klaus’ rejected friendship bracelets

- has a massive crush on Allison’s cabinmate but is too shy to talk to her (until the last day)

- Klaus and Ben share a cabin group of boys

- they are the cool counselors who don’t care how late the kids stay up

- also they prank Luther and Diego’s cabin

- they are also the teens that the kids come to when they have personal problems

-at night Ben is in charge because Klaus keeps sneaking out for “swim lessons”

-Five would actually rather stay home than go to camp (as long as Reginald isn’t there)

-also Five is here because i say so (but he looks younger because a glandular problem or something)

- he gets a sunburn immediately and it never goes away

- he gets to be an admin assistant for the camp owner

- that means he gets to yell at people and he has a whistle, also he has access to the only coffee maker on camp

- basically he just runs around doing errands and telling his siblings to control their kids

- the other camp counselors sometimes mistake him for a camper and he goes off on them

- the kids are actually scared of Five (as they should be)

-Vanya’s just happy to be included guys

- but camp is #intimidating

- she has a couple different jobs but always gets steamrolled by the kids

- finally they make her equipment manager and she just has to sit by the equipment shed with a clip board all day

-Five comes to visit her and give her updates about their dumb ass siblings

-this other counselor is kinda a weird dude who keeps trying to hang out with her

- Five offers to beat him up for being creepy. Vanya says no, but then all the other siblings find out and offer to beat him up too.

-She shares a cabin group of girls with this girl from Texas who has horses back home

-Vanya is a horse girl so they hit it off like right away

-sometimes at night they hold hands and Vanya has some feelings about that

-Two months of camp go by and this place is falling apart at the seams

- the hargreeves’ are just too chaotic

- the boss lady of the camp is pissed

-it’s really sad when they have to go home

-but it’s the best summer they’ve ever had

-Reginald doesn’t find out for a while until the kids all start getting weird letters in the mail from other teens and kids

Final Thoughts: FUCK THAT EPISODE I HATED THAT EPISODE I want that abductor dead I don’t care I hate her. Uhhh fuck idk Hannibal and Abigail have a fun dynamic, Will knows he too has no family of humans, I’m once again sad about Jack and. Idk. Alana was serving I liked seeing her even if I do find the inevitable funny and messed up. I like that for the most part each case is wrapped up within the episode very monster of the week vibes. Hate when children are hurt, so that was horrific. Bev and Hannibal are both eldest siblings. That's interesting. Don’t wanna watch this one again!

Also I just have the basic bitch set of trans dean headcanons tbh but they make me go feral so I will repeat them!!

- lazurus rising when cas brought dean back he put him in the body he’s always deserved (the mirror scene lives in my head rent free baby!)

- teenage dean stealing testosterone from hospitals and pharmacies when he had the chance bc they moved around too much for him to have a stable prescription pickup plan

- John being pissed for awhile that dean’s not his “perfect little girl” like he thought but getting over it bc dean is so determined to emulate him to prove his masculinity that it just makes him a better more fierce hunter and protector so John gets over it in like a year (Dean’s always been Like That anyway,,, in the grand scheme of things it’s less Distracting to have this small ongoing conflict that John just calls him Dean and does the passive aggressive “you wanna be a man? Act like it.” bullshit you know how it goes)

- Dean knowing he’s not a girl from a young age (like probably about 6) and teaches Sam to call him Dean and that he’s his brother from the time sammy can talk (Sam doesn’t learn Dean’s name is legally Deanna until he’s starting middle school)

- Dean binding in his teens by wearing those tank tops that are like skin tight but also stretchy material? With the built in bra part? he wears two of those under all the Normal Winchester layers and it gives him the flat chest (what isn’t flattened completely gets lost under his dad’s leather jacket he wears to school every day)

- it goes without saying but Dean, age 7, cut his hair for the first time in a shitty hotel bathroom mirror by trying to copy a dude in a shaving ad in a magazine (John didn’t even notice for three days)

- Dean gets top surgery after sam goes to Stanford when he’s supposed to be on a solo hunt (he tells John he’s hunting something but really he’s recovering at Bobby’s)

- Bobby, we are not surprised, is a good father figure and shut that shit down when dean explains that he’s just gonna hole up in a motel once he gets his surgery (“Boy, do you know how fucking dirty motel linens are? I am NOT letting you die from an infection and most certainly not leaving you Alone for months defenseless”)

- Dean using makeup to make his jawline a little sharper and more square even tho the iffy food situation growing up made sure he barely has any roundness to his face to begin with

- on the flip side dean playing up his fem features to use as a distraction when he hustles pool

- dean training his voice by trying to copy the sound of his favorite singers voices (and John since he hears his voice most consistently)

- dean knocking the shit out of transphobes (the comments don’t even have to be directed at him, he hears them and it’s ON SIGHT no question)

- dean acting like a womanizer bc that’s what Men Do and it’s all just literally part of his carefully constructed hyper masculine image bc it’s so so difficult to pick up anyone when what’s under theclothes don’t match what can be seen on the surface (Cassie is the first person he sleeps with and he’s so terrified but she doesn’t care holy shit she doesn’t care?)

- Dean chooses to keep his name close to his birth name bc that’s the name his mother gave him and he doesn’t want to disrespect her by completely changing it

- On the topic of dean’s hyper masculine image he constructs it from a mix of John and from the action movies he studies religiously when he has the chance (this is what boys like this is what every man dreams of being I have to like this too-) even tho he has enough action and violence in his actual life thanks,

- Dean not being big on faith because he can’t imagine some higher power choosing to make him be born in the wrong body and make him work so hard to fix it himself like life wasn’t hard Enough

- Dean being so immensely pleased when word gets around the monster worlds about the Winchester Brothers,,, the validity of your reputation being cemented in the way you’ve carefully crafted it to be

- Dean rationalizing that it’s okay for him to spend time and energy on making sure he’s presenting masc and getting the body language and mannerisms down because it helps him be better at his jobs as protector of his family and as a hunter (men are thought of as stronger/scarier, men are taken more seriously when interviewing locals/victim’s families, more authority is afforded to men)

- dean almost shooting a man in a bar bathroom when he’s fourteen and just needed to deal with shark week stuff real quickly but this drunk decided a “teenage girlie only has one use in a men’s bathroom” but dean just knocks him out and sprints back to the motel (dean doesn’t use public bathrooms after that if he can help it)

- dean not knowing the word transgender until he finds it in a library book while he’s supposed to be researching but really he’d heard the slur and needed to be clear on why it made him feel so icky so he was looking it up in the dictionary and he’s like Oh that’s Me

- Bobby doesn’t actually meet Sam and Dean until after Dean’s cut his hair for the first time and Sammy can only say half words (most Dee, which is good enough for Dean) so one of Dean’s first impressions of Bobby is him asking John “didn’t you have a daughter?” and John just giving a tired sigh because he’s too busy with the hunt he’s here for to try and get into it but Dean butts in with “No, he’s always had two boys, I’m Dean and this is Sammy” and Bobby doesn’t comment on this little high pitched voice or question it much because he’s babysitting this kid for the next two weeks and he doesn’t want it to be a hostile two weeks (and it never becomes a problem because by the end of week one Bobby never even entertains the idea that Dean isn’t a little boy)

- After Dean gets back from Hell literally the only thing that trips Sam and Bobby up (aside from that he just resurrected lmao) is that his shoulders are more squared and he’s just built more like he should be (see previous point about cas rebuilding him as he should’ve been!)

- Dean never having much money but he still donates to queer charities when he can (makes a point of it in June especially)

- Dean hangs a trans flag in his room at the bunker (and one in the dean cave too)

- The insane validation Dean feels at being called The Rifhteous Man (also the fact that Heaven Knew he was a man all along but didn’t lift a finger to make that any easier to show the rest of the world adds to dean’s general hatred towards them tho)

Don't think it's Jugheads lines being duds or Betty being blinded by love. I just think it's how our culture responds to white male writers. White dudes can write anything and it'll get lauded like the best thing since sliced bread. Not hating on Jughead, I love my boy, but. Our culture just be like that.

So, you have a very good point there about the elevation of mediocre, cishet, white men. But also, we actually haven’t seen many reliable reactions to Jughead’s writing. Let’s go through them, in a completely random order:

1.) FP: Likes it, but also not someone whose opinion I would trust on good literature, and also not objective at all.

2.) Toni: She called Jughead’s story “very Lovecraftian,” but that doesn’t mean it’s good, just that he met the basics of that writing style. I mean, it could have been good, but it wasn’t necessarily good.

3.) The writing competition he entered: He actually didn’t win this, so we have no evaluation other than that it wasn’t the best entry.

4.) Fred: Called Jughead the best writer he knew, if memory serves, but also not someone I would go to for evaluations of literature.

5.) Mr. Chipping recruiting him: We all know now that there were ulterior motives here, so we have no evaluation of his writing.

6.) The in-class competition: Another thing he lost, actually.

7.) Bret: Considering how pissed he was and also, like, everything about him, I wouldn’t trust his opinion either when it comes to quality, but like...he did say “Your prose reads more like a pre-teen journaling about his abandonment issues than as a coherent narrative,” which isn’t wrong, but I’m still wary of it because, well, Bret.

8.) Jughead winning the contract: Another part of the killing Jughead plot, cannot be relied upon.

9.) DuPont using Jughead’s story as a base for a Baxter Brothers book: We don’t know the extent of the editing done here, so is it just a matter of a good premise but bad writing? Or maybe the writing was good and the edits were minor? Jughead said, “You really think I wouldn't recognize my own story after someone did a polish on it?“, thus implying minor edits, but DuPont said, “ We kept the elements we liked, and then, let another ghost writer try their hand at it,” so maybe it was a more thorough rewrite? Unclear.

10.) Acceptance into Yale: Due to the connections involved here, it’s unclear how much Jughead’s writing really mattered. He certainly thinks it did, but it might have only needed to be passable, considering the level of connections.

11.) Interest from the University of Iowa: Ah, finally something semi-reliable, but, as you said, the advancement of mediocre white men comes into play here.

12.) Archie?: I think Archie calls Jughead a good writer in 4x19, but like...we’ve never seen Archie reading Jughead’s writing, and also, again, he’s not someone I’d trust for opinions on good writing.

13.) Betty: I saved the best for last. Now, I would like to think that Betty wouldn’t fall into the mediocre white man trap, or at least not in this case because she sees Jughead as Jughead rather than a random entry with statistics attached. Now, on the one hand, we constantly hear her praising his writing, but on the other hand, Jughead says, after FP asks if he can make one suggestion about Jughead’s story, “That's what Betty says, and then it's about a dozen suggestions.“ So, does that mean she’s a thorough, harsh editor? Maybe, but maybe not. Betty has enough taste that Toni Morrison is her favorite author, but she’s also a teenager, and I know my standards for writing have increased since I was her age. And she’s very, very in love with Jughead, so there’s that bias as well. Of course, there’s a chicken-and-the-egg thing here, where did Betty’s bad taste in writing make her think he’s a good writer and help her fall in love with him or does Betty’s love for Jughead blind her to his bad writing? Unclear. Basically, we can’t trust her either.

In sum, we have all of one reliable suggestion that Jughead is a good writer in the entire show. Now, I would say that the show wants us to think Jughead is a good writer, despite not putting in the effort to have his writing be good prose, but I’d also say that in the show’s universe, there isn’t much proof either way.

Also? You know what, I’m going to give Jughead credit and say that I actually like what we saw of his story in 4x19. I mean, we didn’t see the prose, but I liked the dialogue, and, ngl, the line “We’re all monsters, we’ve always been monsters” isn’t a bad one, especially for an eighteen-year-old. Granted, he then threw all that away out of guilt, but still, he’s not complete garbage. And the show has given us less and less voice over from him as the seasons have gone on, so it’s easier to pretend that we mainly hear his dud lines, and, c’mon, most things have at least one dud line.

idk, idk, the jury’s out on Jughead’s writing. I do wonder if we’ll hear more of it after the time jump and if it will be any different or better. God, I would love if they found someone who’s actually good at prose to write his bits and it’d be like, “oh, damn, he’s actually good now, good for him”, and I would also be super depressed if his writing was the same cringe it is now, at which point we would know him getting published was a matter of the elevation of mediocre, cishet, white men and probably connections from grad school. I guess we’ll see.

Hi! I'm currently watching word of honor and I'm having a great time, would you recommend reading faraway wanderers?

Hello hello! I definitely do recommend faraway wanderers, but I have to do so with the caveat that some of my favorite parts of the show just... aren’t in the book, which can be a bit jarring if you’re expecting certain beats that never arrive. In particular, the scorpions are a LOT different, there are no notable sidekicks like pretty arhat in the book, and there’s no xie’er (DEEPLY TRAGIC), and the scorpion king is instead a weird gambling addict voyeur man, who is a lot of fun, but gives a VERY different flavor to proceedings than xie’er.

I want to say... Ghost Valley is also a lot more integrated into the show than it is into the book. Most of the ghosts are nonentities, and Luo Qianqiu isn’t affiliated with Ghost Valley at all, so you don’t get her fascinating dynamic with the tragicomic ghost or Gu Xiang. Sect Leader Yu is just kind of a one-dimensional scumbag who is using a woman who has feelings for him and has a talent for disguise. I want to say that ghosts in the book come up more by reputation than they do by actual appearance.

OH, and the biggest difference, Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing don’t share any past, they meet for the first time when Zhou Zishu is sunbathing and Wen Kexing decides he’s a hottie. I... prefer this, fairly strongly. Their scenes in the show are intense and moving and all, but I like this from a plot-based perspective much more.

So when it comes to those side characters, the book is mildly a downgrade, but on the upside front, the flirting starts from a VERY early point, and goes strong. Wen Kexing is openly super into dudes and wrestles with his feelings not at all, which of course they couldn’t really make explicit in the show, but I find it really refreshing to see it on the page. And it’s a lot of fun, there was one line, something like ‘the man was glaring at wen kexing as if he’d stolen his wife. wen kexing felt very wronged, because as a rule, men did not have male wives.’ He’s having a GREAT time and I support him,

Also, the character notes you get for Wen Kexing in the book are a bit different from those in the show, where I guesssss in the show, they were switching things out for the shidi/shixiong backstory? But without spoilers, I am very, very into Wen Kexing’s personality in the book, the stories he tells, and the nature of his martial arts. OH. And without spoilers, again, I strongly prefer the end of the book to the end of the show. I like em both, but if I had to choose, the book would be my clear winner, for reasons I can’t fully explain without spoilers XD

Kind of long-winded, but yes! I definitely recommend the book. All three translators who did pieces of it did a fantastic job, and the extras are all lovely as well. And it’s much more manageably sized than some of these monsters. It comes in at 78+4 chapters and <200k, iirc. Some of the political maneuvering between sects kind of made my brain glaze over (so many NAMES), but watching the show and getting even VERY vague visuals for everyone involved is helping me follow along much better my second time through. I liked this book a lot!

BUT.

One more thing.

Slightly more hard mode, but something I recommend even more.

Lord Seventh is a book in continuity with this one, which takes place slightly earlier, chronologically. In the book verse, the Prince Jin isn’t still fighting for the throne, that character was already the emperor when Zhou Zishu turned in his letter of resignation, and that’s the central plot of Lord Seventh. This book follows a different character (Jing Beiyuan, who shows up in the show eventually, with his boyfrand Wu Xi), but features Zhou Zishu as a prominent side character, back in his teens, getting embroiled in succession politics. I’ve still got a little ways to go (zhou zishu just helped break his adoring, innocent shidi’s heart, and i need a tiny break), but it gives REALLY excellent context for the mental/emotional place he’s in when faraway wanderers/word of honor starts, and I absolutely LOVE it. Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi play a fairly important role in the book, and idk what they do in the show, but even though I read it without knowing them the first time around, I’m enjoying it even more now. Even little unimportant details like knowing that their pet sable is WILDLY venomous, it just makes this all a very fun read.

So that’s where I’m at! I definitely recommend faraway wanderers, but I also recommend lord seventh. They’re both very manageably sized webnovels, and they’ve both been a whole lot of fun.

You were peacefully buried yourself deep into your blankets as your soft white noise machine played and your dreams were soft of you having a picnic in the park. Only for it to be cut short by; grunting, yelling, swords?

You sat up, sighing you turned on your light and got out of safe haven. Unsure of where the sound was coming from, you checked the living room. Nothing. Kitchen, empty. Bathroom, dripping faucet but no swords.

Leaving the bathroom you hummed, shrugging the sound off as a neighbors TV you went back to bed, light off, eyes shut, dreamland doors opening.

And they slammed right in your face. Sitting up again you looked right at your window, now slightly agitated you slammed your window open.

The fighting sounds were much louder, and you looked down at the alley way. Being on the third floor wasn't that bad, you could easily see the ground, but it was still dark.

"HEY! QUIET THE FUCK DOWN! PEOPLE ARE TRYNA SLEEP!" You yelled, staring down at the shadowy figures who all paused.

You heard footsteps quickly running and you just rolled your eyes, turning around you sat on the windowsill now fully awake at 4 AM. You feel cursed since you have a shift tomorrow at a the Stone Pizza Palor.

Only to jump from the window when the fire escape shook from behind you.

"Hey thanks for the save!" A voice called and you went stiff, what the fuck.

"Mikey! Get down from there!" Another voice called from below, and slowly you turned to face the voices. Sighing internally that you couldn't see the person's face. You stayed right where you are.

"Chill out bro, I'm just givin my thanks!" The voice, who you can assume is 'Mikey' laughed.

"Um uh...you guys were keeping me awake..so I had to. But um no problem?" You said,

"Oh sorry about that, just was protecting the city like bam and punch!" You couldn't see the movements he was making but assumed they were action poses, but right in the middle of a pose the fire escape shook again. Another person joined Mikey.

"Mikey, what the hell do ya think ya doin'?" The voice was rough.

"Owowow! Raph come on man! Just bein a good samaritan, man!"

"You don't even know what that means." As the two argued you slowly backed up, reaching for your lamp you switched it on. Your eyes went wide.

"Aw shit." The one called 'Raph' muttered and Mikey waved, you could only stay stiff as you finally realized that you were not talking to humans, or even bodybuilders.

You were talking to two giant...green things...you don't know what they are exactly…

"Are they okay?"

"Cours' they ain't, they did just see our ugly mugs!" The one wearing red yelled and managed his way into your bedroom. He pointed a finger at you.

"You. If you eva tell anyone about thi-"

"Raph!" Another voice spoke making you gain consciousness again and sit on your bed in shock.

Mikey joined the bedroom, sitting near you with a smile that made you unable to blink. Then ANOTHER turtle joined the room, not even asking for permission. This one wearing blue,

"How many times do I have to tell you-"

"I know Leo, don't threaten, maim, harm or harass any humans. But hey, not my fault I'm defensive!" The red one argued. The other one wearing blue, named Leo, held his face and groaned.

"Well technically it's Mikey's fault for this stranger seeing us, I mean he did come up to their window. We could've just left before they called the cops on us." Another voice said from the window, a head peaked in. This one, wearing purple and large glasses. Mikey just shrugged, not even defending himself.

"Hi, I'm Donnie." He said with a wave and you just sighed. Suddenly all eyes were on you,

"Please tell me this is some dream I'm having after binge watching monster movies."

Mikey laughed,

"This is real, dude!" He said with a smile that didn’t help the situation at all.

"He's right, this is all real-" Leo tried to speak,

"Come on, we coulda just knocked their ass out and left!"

"Raph no!" As the red and blue argued, the purple one 'Donnie' slipped inside. Well not slipped he did struggle because of the gear on his back,

"Plus dreams can't get that complex based on things you see in real life. So yes, sadly, this is true. Also sorry for keeping you up."

"So what are you four gonna do now, kill me or something?" You said, Mikey shook his head.

"Nah man that's against our code." He put his fist and palm together and bowed,

"We're ninjas." He smiled, Donnie added on.

"And we're teens."

"We're fucking mutants." The red one snapped, turning back to the blue one,

"But we're not monsters, we're just turtles." Leo tried to lighten the mood with a smile but by then you were too tired to care.

"And now, we are forever in your debt!" Mikey said, getting on one knee he held your hand. You quickly pulled it back and made a confused face.

"What- why?"

"Because you totally saved us, dude! You scared away those bad guys who were totally kickin' our asses!"

"Mikey!" Raph tried to defend himself but Mikey stopped him,

"Sorry, butt."

You stood up and sighed,

"Listen you are not in debt to me, none of you are. I just wanted some sleep, I always yell out that window, well..mainly at crackheads..never at..giant..turtle boys."

"Men." Mikey winked and you blinked,

"No," you shook your head, "listen if you all just leave, right now, I won't tell a soul. Not even a stray cat. Alright?" The turtles hummed,

"Deal but. If you tell anyone. We will find you." Leo said his finger almost in your face and you rose a brow,

"Ya, you know where I live. I expect that." His finger curled away and he blinked, then he shook his head and left through the window.

Then it was Donnie, Raph and Mikey. Who sat in the windowsill. He looked at you,

"Wait, I have a question."

"What is it?"

"Why..why aren't you scared of us?"

"I live in fucking New York City, I see shit like you guys everyday. You're not the first mutants I've met." You said, and Mikey then smiled with joy and shock.

"Awesome, I'll catch ya later dude!" He waved and suddenly he disappeared. You stared out the window, watching as Mikey joined his brothers telling them of what you said. While you couldn't hear them, you know that you're bound to meet them again.

I couldn’t finish Batman and Robin 2009. It was just... mentally exhausting and I stopped shortly after Bat Dick put fake Bruce in the Lazarus pit. Based on his appearances in Teen Titans, Bruce Wayne: Road Home, as well as his big fan base, I assumed Damian’s character development was executed nicely in his own series. But then again in Gates of Gotham (literally read it just for Cass) he’s impulsive, arrogant and rude to Cass both to her face and behind her back-even after she saved his life 1

Don’t get me started on the sexist things he’s said to Steph. I want to like Damian, but writers don’t make it easy. I got into comics because of batfam fanfics and he was a fave of mine. Dude was extra violent and displayed borderline sociopathic tendencies in his first appearances, cool beans. There’s a lot they can do with a character like that. I just felt like his bad behaviour was never properly dealt with before B&R, and I couldn’t muster the energy to see him through his own series. 2/2

IMO, Damian felt like a Gary Stu at times.

I don’t know if that last one was from the same person or not, but I just got the feeling it is, and if it’s not, then well it blends well enough and don’t feel the need to answer it separately.

Like all I can really say is that I don’t really like Damian. A lot of people confuse that for me thinking he’s an evil monster. I imagine cause I have a Tim icon and other Tims do rage on about that every now and again. As well as just plain taking things I say the wrong way (though I have probably said things in the moment I imagine). But I just plain don’t really like his writing, and if I can’t really read a comic he’s in that I actually like. Idk, I just find it weird to say I like him, when all I really like is what he could be. I don’t feel like that really equals me liking him, cause when I think about it, I kinda realized that meant the opposite, and didn’t wanna project the wrong idea.

But I wanna say this about Damian. He is insanely inconsistent as a personality and character. To this very day. So, as I do with every character, I start from the beginning, figure out what was meant to be by the writers that helped develop them, and figure out what’s in-character and out of character from there. I just feel like it’s the most objective way I can look at anything if I want to review things with standards that are more than just “I like this” or “I don’t like that”.

And in the case of Damian he’s never not been inconsistent. Like one of the main reasons I reread Batman and Robin (or at least Morrison’s run) was for plans of a post about flanderization in the Bat-Family, cause it was pretty rampant in the 00s and still continues often to this very day, and I think is the cause of a lot of lost sales and unhappiness and overall fandom diminishment.

However also to say it, I liked to see a lot of what Damian could be within B&R 09.

But anyways, basically just because I can’t really do a part of the post on Damian without trying to figure out what he was like to begin with, and what he was supposed to be per his creator.

Cause you can’t really tell in fandom. Cause his most popular comics are from stuff that isn’t in the main universe and was purposely a lot lighter, or in the main universe from writers that really surprisingly didn’t get the character despite the popularity--which continues my thinking on it was less about the quality of the writing and more about the lazy fan service. They honestly really flanderized him in a similar yet opposite way then what they did with Tim in the 00s.

And while I can’t act like the sexism and homophobia wasn’t an actual part of the character of Damian at the time--he shows both of those traits in the series (at least the homophobia, cause I’m now realizing that I might be thinking of another series for the sexism). He was flanderized even then by other writers from the different series.

Like how he’s written in Red Robin, is not freaking Damian. It’s not Damian to me. I don’t accept it as Damian. Even a lot of the content of him in Batgirl I even less feel like is Damian--besides unfortunately some of the sexist comments, but they never really proper developed him on that as far as like--actively showing that, at least that I can recall. So all I can really say is it’s uncomfortable, and how they don’t delve into it is the only real reason I say “That actually sadly does fit in with him”. But it’s not like it doesn’t make sense, he was raised to fight, not to handle emotions or feelings, he probably would do and say really creepy things when he has a crush--I just wish they’d actually acknowledge that what was going on rather than sacrificing a good story for more fan service.

The other writers make him too much of a bratty, snotty, kid. And I found that, that is an absolutely terrible interpretation of Damian, because beyond his origin, he isn’t a typical brat, and he doesn’t really act like a kid (in some ways yes, but general mannerisms and personality no). And even then he was a different kind of brat. He was entitled and bitchy in his origin, not immature (at least in the same way) and snotty. They have him act more like some spoiled brat from next door rather than a kid that was abused into being obedient to be what his abusive mother wanted (Talia shouldn’t be abusive, but like I said before, I think the series sucked overall for reasons like that and more).

(I also find that stupid line cutting scene in RR where I presume he was trying to kill Tim to be even stupider, cause Damian wouldn’t freaking do that at that point. They make Damian come off as so stupid in that issue, I hate it. Cause it was all just a cheap way to force sympathy for him, but it doesn’t even make sense when you think about it and is a huge stretch.)

Damian doesn’t make jokes when he’s written better--it’s like his thing. He’s got quite the temper, and understandably why of course. He’s violent with criminals, but he’s also mostly just stoic as his base state when not in a stressed situation, and even shows remorse (which is a big stretch from his origin, but I blame that on the writing which could be very rushed and lazy). He was treated like just another adult for the most part, and it had a weirdly endearing quality despite the maturity of it, and general edge of the series. It was Damian’s place and it worked really well. It just felt right for their dynamics. Damian’s a unique kid, and they respected him for who he was. He just needed help on his morals and stability.

But other series didn’t really get that. He would still be really rude like his origin, and not really the same tone of rudeness (I’m not sure if I can really explain what I mean by that), he’s aggressive, but putting him in Teen Titans never made sense to me, because I don’t see Dick doing that. Dick had a lot more respect than to force Damian to do something like that. Dick was more patient, and while he did lightly smack (not any kind to hurt him any. literally to demonstrate without pain. more taps really) him to teach him a point about aesthetical weaknesses in his costume like the hood, it was mostly done out of finding a way to teach him that would speak to him. So just forcing him to do something he didn’t want to do--which would clearly not work on him--was just contrived and plain bad writing wise. Something they did more as a stunt so they can say “TITANS NOW HAS THE SON OF BATMAN” than to use him well or continue his story in a natural way.

With Cass I can’t say anything, because that’s like the one time he talks to her, and that basically shows their dynamic. So that’s just them, I can’t really say anything on it. If he felt challenged by her I could see him being a total jerk. It really depends on the scenes themselves. I never read the series myself cause I genuinely really don’t like that Batman Reborn era of Bat-Family. Too much of it was just done for publicity and random changes, and for the most part didn’t work much to me.

But overall, at the same time, despite me singing the praises of what Damian could be, and was for a little while. The overall writing for the character arc was super lazy. Stuff just kind of happens, and way too quick to fit in with what they introduced. He just kind of goes “this is right, now”, which makes his whole brainwashing thing feel a bit--useless, and makes how he went from chopping heads off to that in very little time sort of cuts out depth that could’ve really made the series more rereadable. Damian actually comes off surprisingly as a very flat character for stretches of time in the issues because his character arc is never focused on as much as you’d think until they need to be like “Oh yeah...uh, here’s an emotional moment”. Which just felt really cheap to me.

So the series to me isn’t worth it if you want a good story. None of the stories were good to me, I think I was questioning each one cause it was either schlocky, out of character, or both. I know people like Grant Morrison, but they aren’t for me, I’m not a fan of their writing. Damian was a Gary Stu a lot, which they try to explain with the League thing--but having the League give him experimental surgery so he could walk the same day (or next) after being legitimately paralyzed was just way too freaking much to me. But he does make mistakes, so he’s not at base a Gary Stu really--the writing just really stunk badly sometimes.

This isn’t me putting in a bid to say “OH YOU JUST NEED TO READ THIS, AND YOU’LL FREAKING LOVE HIM”, because to be freaking honest, when you already have a bad taste in your mouth, it’s best to just wait a bit till trying again. I read the fandom recommended comics and felt there was so many problems that I couldn’t read Damian for literal months. And he still has a lot of the problems you said. I’m just saying Damian is surprisingly different when written by his creator than others, cause honestly nearly every single other writer for him has gotten him wrong. Like mind-blowingly wrong. He does not feel like the same character anywhere else. It’s nuts.

To put it another way, it’s a generally speaking bad series, but if you want to see what Damian was meant to be like before they kept regressing him, and diminishing him, and turning him into more a joke, and see what his dynamic with Dick and Alfred was meant to be like, it’s a brilliant and perfect series to read it for.

It’s better for learning about them--then it actually is to enjoy it. Because it’s most likely not a series I’m going to be returning too often unless to research something again.

i know in the book eddie comes off as so repressed he’s in denial about his sexuality. how about richie though? i see the consensus is that he’s more afraid of people’s opinions than anything else and he does make that pointed ‘going gaily in bareback’ comment to eddie but i have no idea tbh and i love to read ur opinions

Yeah I wrote about the internal vs. external thing back in September (x, x, x) and I guess it caught on a bit, or idk, maybe it popped up elsewhere organically and caught on that way. Regardless, yeah, I think it’s clear that Richie is comfortable with himself on a personal level but is concerned about the way other people perceive him and respond to him. He wants to be liked, he wants to make people laugh, and he wants to project a certain image and persona(s).

That’s part of why I dislike Andy’s interpretation. To me, Richie does not come off as sexually repressed like, literally at all. He SUpresses his emotions, but he doesn’t REpress jack shit. Richie has a hard time connecting with people because he actively chooses not to do things like cry or open up about himself. But that is not necessarily correlated to the way he might act on his sexuality, y’know? He makes comments about having unprotected sex and says that Sandy was surprised he hadn’t fathered any kids on accident, so he’s definitely in the free love mindset. I think that Richie would ultimately be fine with exploring his bisexuality by hooking up with men, but only on the DL, because again - it’s not about his personal life, it’s about his public image. If he doesn’t want people to know he sleeps with dudes too, people aren’t going to know. It’s not even necessarily shame-related, he’s just being pragmatic - it’s the mid-80′s, he’s on the outskirts of celebrity culture, and he knows exactly how the public would react.

Eddie spends the novel fighting against himself, this compulsive, intrusive thought that there is something rotten about him that can’t be cured. But that’s not who Richie is. Richie knows himself, he’s just secretive. The shame he feels as a kid is based on him allowing societal attitudes to get to him, it’s not coming from within the way it does for Eddie. Even the werewolf isn’t about personal shame, it’s about being labeled a monster the same way the teen wolf was. Richie knows that he’s a “regular guy” most of the time but that there is a part of him that people would see as Bad if he were to outwardly display it, so he’s not about to outwardly display it. Instead, he chooses what parts of himself to display for others. This is suppression, not repression - one major difference between Richie and Eddie is this.

IT wearing a Tozier letterman jacket during the walking tour and shouting in a booming, giant’s voice in the middle of a public park that Richie ought to invite both Bev and Eddie down to the sewers to party and causing Richie’s eyeballs to burn is literally Pennywise saying a big “fuck you” to Richie’s privacy. And it works - Richie says “fuck you” right back and then bolts.

Ch.2 almost got there, and could’ve done it well, but they missed the mark by misinterpreting Richie’s whole Deal and turning his external issues into both external and internal (and erasing other things but I don’t feel like beating a dead horse right now).
