IN WHICH ✶ y/n loved the idea of love, simply because she hadn’t experienced it yet. She hoped and prayed that love would come to her at the perfect time of her life where she’s mentally stable and ready for it. So when she suddenly gets attention from Lee Heeseung—she can’t tell if she likes this or not? This sudden attention, he was extremely sweet to her, way too sweet that it was suspicious. Given his reputation, Heeseung wasn’t the type to settle. So why was he all up on Y/n? and just why was Y/n enjoying it? She was confused with herself and her new situationship, maybe she’s just overstimulated by everything and scared to commit.

Y/n was working on her new collection in peace, with NCT blasting through her airpods, unable to hear anything from the outside world.

Meaning she didn’t hear the now familiar loud footsteps walking down the stairs.

Jay sighed as Heeseung was walking slightly faster than him, speed walking his way to greet the girl.

“Hi!” Heeseung said with excitement as he was now in Y/n’s peripheral vision. She shrieked, “You scared me!” her pencil smudged her design as she got scared.

“Sorry,” Heeseung chuckled apologetically. “What are you working on?” He peeked at her sketchpad.

“Something for my new collection—Jay, I need your opinion.” She turned around to meet the others back. “What is it?” Jay turned around, pieces of fabric in his hands.

“What do you think about these sketches? I’m going for something new, a sort of casual but something odd to make it pop.” Y/n showed Jay sketches of finished outfits.

“I like it, the funky socks will definitely make heads turn.” Y/n smiled at his feedback, ever since the two were freshman deep down she’s always admired Jay’s work of art.

“What are you working on?” Y/n asked, she’s been hesitant on asking so, but her curiosity is finally getting the best of her today. You can’t blame her, he’s been coming into the studio after hours with Heeseung following behind.

“New pieces for the fall, Heeseung is my model for the collection.” He nods his head towards Heeseung. “Y’know, Y/n, if you ever decide you want to release clothes for males I am always open to model for you!” Heeseung suggested as he slightly leaned against Jay’s table.

“Thanks, but I’ll probably ask my guy friends.” Y/n chuckles. “And besides, aren’t you always streaming?”

“True…worth a try I guess.” Heeseung smiles at the girl.

Heeseung tried his best not to interrupt the girl as she worked, he was bored out of his mind just standing there as Jay was dressing him up like a doll for hours.

“Y/n, what do you think about this?” Jay asked. Heeseung was wearing a knitted sweater with a bunch of different patches of colors and little details here and there.

“This is new,” Y/n was debating whether she liked it or not. “I know, I’m debating whether or not I like it myself.” Jay sighed. “Mrs. Jeong said I needed to go out of my comfort zone.”

“Well, if it makes you feel better, Heeseung definitely makes it look good.” Y/n chuckled.

“Thank you, Y/n!” Heeseung exclaimed. “How’s your work going?” He asked, standing still as Jay adjusted the sweater on him.

“It’s good, I think I’m gonna head out though, It’s getting late and my friends are all hanging out at Seunghan and Soobin’s place.”

“Tell them we say hi.” Jay said as he picked out a needle from his pin cushion. “Of course.” Y/n said as she packed up her things.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Y/n put her backpack on and waved goodbye. “Goodnight!” Y/n smiled as she walked up the stairs.

A/N: this turned out less halloween-y than i planned, but i think its still cute hehe

SUMMARY: It was supposed to be a perfect, cozy fall weekend. Right until you doubt whether you're the perfect fit for your older, successful boyfriend.

There’s a pep in your steps as you walk out of the elevator on the top floor of Harry’s office building, carrying the lunch you made him and you’re dropping off for him now. You’re excited for tonight and this weekend, because it’s gonna be the perfect fall weekend. You’re having a cozy movie night tonight, watching Nightmare Before Christmas and Coco while eating caramel apples and popcorn, drinking hot chocolate and tomorrow you’re going to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins that you’ll carve later in the afternoon. It’s literally what every girl dreams of at the end of October and Harry is a partner in all of it even though you would have never guessed he’s the kind of man to do these things when you first met him years ago.

You know your way around the office well by now so when the two assistants sitting behind their desk spot you, none of them question who you are.

“Mr. Styles is in a meeting,” Riley says as you approach them.

“I know. I’m just dropping this off for him. Can you give it to him when he’s done? I made him lunch,” you smile bashfully as you set the bag with the containers in it onto the desk. You even put a cute little sticky note on top.

Can’t wait for tonight, hurry home to me! Bone appetite! Love you! Xx

You love the pun and you know Harry will too.

“Of course,” Riley nods with a smile.

“Alright. Thank you, have a nice day,” you smile back as you turn around and head back towards the elevator. You sink your hands into the deep pockets of your wool coat and wind the candy you showed in there, wanting to give it to Harry too, so you start walking back to the assistant, but before you could turn the corner you hear them talking.

“I know! This is so silly,” Riley laughs.

“Silly? More like ridiculous. Her boyfriend is the CEO and she is bringing him lunch with sticky notes,” the other assistant, Tina snorts.

“I never understood how he could date a woman like her. No, not even woman, she is a girl.”

“Have you seen her in that oversized jumper?”

“The rainbow colored one?”

“Yes! It’s hideous! I wouldn’t even dress my toddler in it. Harry is a billionaire, I don’t know how he puts up with her childishness.”

You chew on your bottom lip so harshly, it almost starts bleeding. Their words hurt and turning around you rush back to the elevator so you can leave as fast as possible.

It sends you down a spiral. Are you really that childish? You always knew Harry and you come from different worlds, but you thought they clash perfectly. He is a CEO, insanely successful, lives in a penthouse and is thirty-six years old while you just turned twenty-six. You were an art teacher until you switched, so now you design book covers, but you still teach a few classes in a private school, because you like the kids so much. You lived in a one bedroom apartment before moving in with Harry, which was the size of the bedroom you now share with him. You don’t wear designer clothes, you love thrift shopping and you tend to DIY anything and everything.

As you arrive back home, walking into the penthouse you take a look around. You still remember how it looked when you moved in two years ago, very clean and modern, like the cover of an architecture magazine. But now you see your own touch everywhere.

Colorful candles spattered on every possible surface, chunky blankets covering the grey couch along with a bunch of pillows, you’ve put up fall decoration here and there, making the place cozier and more like home instead of leaving it so sterile. Harry never said he finds your things childish, not even your extreme amount of funky mugs or your plants, all in different pots or random art you hung at every possible empty spot in the place. They are far from his taste, but these little things make the penthouse homey.

Or at least they did until now.

As you look around you only see how childish and ridiculous all this stuff looks in the expensive penthouse that was once Harry’s modern home. What if he hates all of them? If he finds them hideous, but he just doesn’t want to hurt your feelings.

He is a decade older than you, a serious businessman and you’re making him watch Coco tonight and you have plans to go to a pumpkin patch tomorrow. How could you think these were the things he wanted to do?

“Your girlfriend dropped this off for you, Sir.” Riley places the bag on Harry’s desk when he returns into his office and he would have known it was from you even if she didn’t tell him. It’s in that bag with the polka dots all over that you love to use so much. It brings a smile to his lips and then he finds the sticky note. His smile grows from ear to ear.

“Thank you. I’ll be leaving early tonight, I have plans. You guys can leave around three too, if you want,” he tells her to which she nods before striding out of the room.

He can’t wait to spend the evening with you, curled up on the couch, watching the movies you chose. There’s nothing he would rather be doing on a Friday evening.

Wanting to get home as soon as possible, he really does leave early, texting you on his way home. You usually text him right back with a bunch of emojis, but this time you just send a simple okay and it concerns him. Something happened. He knows it.

“Babe! I’m home!” he calls out upon walking into the penthouse, looking for you and he notices that something is off right away.

Most of the candles are gone. And there’s only one blanket left on the couch. The pillows? Gone too.

“Y/N?” he calls out again and that’s when you walk out of the bedroom, dressed in a simple black dress. It looks great on you, but he knows you wouldn’t wear it, not at least without a fun jacket or mismatched jewelry.

“Hey!” you attempt to smile at him as you kiss him on the lips shortly.

“You’re so dressed up,” he hums.

“Yeah, um… I thought that maybe we could ditch the movie night and go out for dinner. I reserved a table at that sushi restaurant you like.”

“You want to ditch movie night? But I thought… what about Coco? It’s your favorite!”

“I’ve seen it a million times already,” you shrug. “And for tomorrow, maybe we could go to the spa and—“

“Alright, wait, slow down,” he cuts you off. “Sushi instead of movie night? Spa instead of pumpkin patch? What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” you play innocent, but he can see right through you.

“Don’t lie to me. Something surely happened and I don’t like what it did to you. You’re not… you’re not yourself. And where are the candles and blankets?”

“Y-You noticed them? I was just… I cleaned up a bit…”

“No, you didn’t clean, you put away most of your stuff, it almost looks like it was before.”

“Because…! They didn’t belong here, it’s better this way. Don’t you think?” you sigh, moving away from him to keep yourself together, but he pulls you back and taking your chin between his thumb and index finger, he makes you look at him.

“Baby, talk to me. What happened?” Your lips wobble as you shake your head, but you know he won’t leave you alone until you tell him. “Tell me what happened, I don’t like seeing you sad,” he softly pleads.

“I’m childish,” you say in a whisper.

“What?”

“I’m… ridiculous and childish. You should… You should be dating someone more mature.”

“Where is this all coming from?” he asks in disbelief. You’re hesitant to answer, but you can’t hold it back any longer.

“I dropped your lunch off today and I heard the assistants talk about me. They said that I’m childish and basically we’re not compatible. And… Maybe they are right.”

“No, they are not!” he answers straight away.

“Have you looked around? I moved in and brought all this… random stuff and messed up your modern and expensive home.”

“No, you made it into our home. I loved every little thing you brought with you!”

“You did?”

“Of course! This place didn’t even feel like home until you moved in. You brought so much light and joy, I love the blankets and pillows, all the candles and anything that reminds me of you.”

You open your mouth to say something, but no words come out. You’re in awe and most importantly, in love.

“And they make the place homey, but you make it my home. You’re my home, Y/N.”

“I’m gonna cry,” you announce as the first tears roll down your cheeks. Harry just chuckles and kisses your forehead before pulling your head to his chest.

“Let’s find those blankets and candles, change into some comfortable clothes and get a head start on that movie night, hm?”

“Okay,” you nod after a hiccup. Taking your face in his hands he wipes your cheeks before kissing you softly on the lips.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Which character from any media would you like to have as a father? 

Sean Maguire from Good Will Hunting (i.e., Robin Williams's character). Maybe not a very exciting or fun answer, and there's probably a lot of reasons to not pick him, but he just seems to be an extraordinarily good man who wants to help people get to a better place in their own lives, who is trying his hardest to get through the day to day, made some mistakes, loved his wife very much, and can make people who are really going through it still manage to laugh and see the world in a new perspective.

If money, laws, time, and effort were no object, what animal would you want to have?

Dragon is a hell of a good answer @michellemisfit, but if money and time and help were no object but I think I'd be intimidated by that (also I wouldn't know what to feed it!) I think I'd want either a highland cow (because once I got to pet one and it licked me and followed me around and I loved him) or a horse, because I think they're neat.

What is your Chinese takeout order? 

General Tso's Chicken, crab rangoon if they have it, steamed spring rolls.

What's your favorite emoji?

👍. it's versatile. I often use it like this: 👍👍.

Would you rather have a library, greenhouse, or home theater in your house?

I was going to say library, but honestly? I might pick a greenhouse. A place that's filled with plants that I can go listen to music to even in wintertime and be warm and surrounded by nature? I think I'm going to have to pick the greenhouse.

What childhood tv show do you think of the most fondly?

Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Power Puff Girls, and the old Pokemon tv show with Brock, Misty, and Ash.

What was your tumblr like when you first joined?

I had a shared computer with the entire house as a kid, so I did not have a tumblr then. I only saw it occasionally because I was a nerdfighter and saw fishingboatproceeds (and heard about the drama of that later). It wasn't until a couple years ago that I got a tumblr, so, not all that different to now. My tumblr was a pitiful attempt at being a writing blog, but I got more interested in fandom pursuits instead. Some things have stayed the same, though, like having an obscure icon lol.

What clothing style do you love but don't feel compelled to replicate yourself?

Dark feminine academia. Black ribbons in the hair, the plaid pleated skirts with the ripped nylons or the smoke color pleated pants, the black mary janes, the cranberry or bourbon or navy colored sweaters with the collared shirt poking out underneath, the neat dark nail polish, the dark lipped makeup. I always think it looks really cool, but a) a ribbon is going to just become a mess in my hair, b) that particular brand of feminine style and color palette rarely looks good on me, and c) seems like a lot of freaking effort that I'm not willing to put in.

If you were plopped into a fictional world, which one would you know the layout of the best?

I know the Legend of Zelda: BOTW map pretty well. The Glade in the Maze Runner is pretty simple so I think I'd know it pretty well, but I do not want to be there lmao.

What is your favorite piece of art? 

This is a really hard question, um. I do love art, my brain provides things like Claude Monet or seaside paintings, but I'm going to be honest, I'm always more enchanted by the architecture of things and places -- I love to do "urban hiking". One of the most amazing places I ever got to explore was Radio City Music Hall in New York City. I learned a lot about why they designed the interior areas the way they did, and it was just such an amazing experience.

Do you have a water bottle? what does it look like?

Yes! I have a yellow one with a bunch of stickers of places I've been.

What fanfic trope is a quiet fave?

It's not even quiet for me -- character A is injured and character B patches them up. I love it.

Do you carry a daily bag? what does it look like? what's the weirdest thing in it?

I've got two. A burgundy faux-leather-looking bag for when I need to carry a bunch of stuff and look professional, such as files, a water bottle, my laptop, and other personal belongings. Otherwise I have an old thrifted purse made of green corduroy and a button with an engraved hummingbird on it that perfectly fits my laptop and my journal and one book. Attached to it is a small pouch I was given by a friend that I put my headphones case into.

If you had to ship Mickey with another Gallagher, who would it be?

I'm a fan of enemies to lovers, lol, so I would probably explore a Mickey/Lip dynamic. Also the amount of sarcasm and actually the frightening capabilities the two would have together would be fascinating.

What is a fanfic trope you didn't expect to like and then very much did?

I actually love post-sex scenes, particularly like aftercare scenes. I was not expecting that.

Do you think s11 Mickey can still carry s11 Ian?

Yup. I kind of think Mickey would make a show of it every time Ian feels weird about his own body, he would pick him up and show Ian he's still his lumbering ginger boy.

Who got custody of the killing bat when they sold the house?

@lingy910y's Mickey and Carl fighting over the bat is GOLD, but I also see Ian quietly grabbing the baseball bat and handing it to Debbie while they're arguing for actual purposes of "I want you to have this and stay safe wherever you are."

Speaking of William Easton he's the number one patron he's at every show and everyone calls him Uncle MoneyBags ™ because he dressed like Mr. Monopoly for Halloween ones fifteen years ago (Adam started it)

Brent Abbott you ask? He's just starting out in the big leagues. Adam has taken him under his wing

Corbett Denlon? Star of her class. Been dancing sine she was 3. She's at every performance she can get her parents to go to. The practice room she uses to rehearse is named after her late brother (who was also a student everyone adored)

And who is this up in the rafters changing the backdrops for scenes? Why it's Bobby Dagen the stage hand who is down bad for children's dance instructor and another principal dancer that gets lent out to other productions Joyce Young (in this universe Amanda and Joyce are cousins just go with it)

Where's our favorite Doctor Lawrence Gordon? (I know our actual favorite doctor is Lynn Denlon but for the sake of this post it's Larry (imagine cary elwes saying Larry from that one scene of men in tights)) well I'll tell you. He is the new front of house manager and he hates Hoffman and he went backstage to confront him but got distracted when he saw Adam dancing. Completely transfixed. He was smitten but has never talked to him in the 3 months he's Been there.

Zep is John's nephew. He's clumsy and spills his mop water on the daily. He's also the janitor/ maintenence man for the theater. He's been electrocuted many times. He's fine. His hair is permanently sticking up tho.

Remember Britt and Addison? Yeah they're the mean girls who constantly undermine everyone they dont like (mainly Amanda. They try to get into Adam's pants) (honestly they could hit me with a car and I'd say thank you)

Perez is Strahms BFF and costume designer

Cecil Adams? Of course he's here. He's the pervy stage hand nobody likes (think Joseph Buquet in Phantom of the Opera meets Ted Spankofski from Starkid's Hatchetfield series)

Rigg is Amanda's dance partner. They're also like together but not

Kerry is there. She's Gordon's second in command.

Daniel Matthews was forced into dance classes by his mom when he got in trouble in school at 13. He's a natural. He still isn't the best but he takes extra lessons with Addy, Adam, Rigg, Amanda, and Joyce (everyone does one of one with him) and Brett helps him outside of the theater. (They're bffs)

Eric Matthews is head of security who is constantly watching Daniel. He's proud

Dan Erickson is here too. He's the accountant.

Jeff joined Eric's security after his son died so he could spend more time with Corbett

Lynn serves as the unofficial theater nurse. She's patched up many floor burns (trust me it fucking hurts when you fall on a stage/dance studio floor even with something to cover your skin think rug burn but from a wooden floor) and sprain ankles and a few broken toes, one time Daniel was a little over zealous and rammed himself into the mirror and broke his nose. She loves being the only unofficial nurse on the unofficial payroll (they're donations for new pediatrics wing of the hospital. John and Jill are grateful for her services but she won't accept payment so they donate to her new department she runs)

The theater is called "Gideon Theater" of course.

Other characters make up the orchestra but I'm too lazy to look them up rn. Up to your imagination but like Charles from 5 plays bass clarinet. The two from the pound of flesh trap are here too. I don't remember their names but the girl plays clarinet and the guy is percussion (I can see him playing xylophone the hammer bell things and crashing th cymbals) And the last surviving dude from the fatal 5 plays trumpet. I know their names my brain is just fried right now

Oh and Bobby's BFF I think he's named after spinach or some other leafy vegetable I can't remember but he's an investor in the theater too.

Rabbid Luigi's vamp powers have only gotten stronger since the first Mario + Rabbids, and by the time he joined the volleyball tournament with his other Rabbid friends, he's turned into a full vampire! Try not to get bitten on the field, or he'll steal your stats to make his even better!

I just finished Rabbid Luigi today, so I guess I can break him down now! First and foremost, I actually had this idea for quite awhile, and it started a few months ago when I saw my good friend @bramble-scramble post this:

But this post gave me an idea for what I should do with Rabbid Luigi here. The Rabbids tend to be way more extreme in their new designs and abilities than the standard Mario characters, which fits because they're already insanely wacky. So for this guy, he's fully embraced his unique vamp abilities from the first game!

Of course that's only half of it - Paper Mario fans must surely recognize him wearing Mr. L's outfit! I thought this was really fitting - he was already a dark alter-ego of Luigi, so Rabbid Luigi's vampire getup being considerably darker than his normal look made total sense. Only thing is his logo doesn't have a black patch like Mr. L's, but him using his actual team emblem felt more important, heh.

As mentioned, his vampire abilities are pretty much entirely based on his Vamp Dash from the first Mario + Rabbids, especially his Vamp Rush. Anyone he attacked with it would get damaged, and he'd heal himself by some of the damage he dealt. So translating that as him stealing opponents stats, their life force as it were, is both fitting and really fun for a unique gameplay mechanic. His stats are already good, but get in his way, and they'll just get even better!

Vampire Punk is mostly original, just being a silly breakdance with those purple bat things that appear whenever someone uses vamp. The idea of the dance itself did come from his weaken ability in Sparks of Hope though!

That's about all I have for him. Like all Rabbids, bringing out the most insane aspects of him for this was really fun, and it made for a character who plays pretty unique compared to the rest of the cast. What's not to like?

EDIT: two of my friends pointed out that the vampire wings resemble the Vampire Candy from Mario Party 8. I actually didn't intend for this, and in fact the wings were a bit more designed after Ridley's. Still, fun coincidence that there was a vampire form that's pretty identical in function to how I made these vampire mechanics work!

Backstory

Born and raised in a nomad goblin clan of Blackarrows, Zuzo was always a quirky soul. Ever since his youngest days, he sought different paths than his peers. When others shot from the bow and practiced with wooden swords, Zuzo was in the camp, repairing broken toys and patching rags. When others tamed wolves, Zuzo was learning advanced knots. This earned him a false reputation as a coward, and it made things worse when Zuzo explained how his woolen coats keep his friends alive in winter.

It took plenty of black eyes and broken noses (on both sides) and a useful rabbit trap design, for others to start respecting his unique skills. Nevertheless, when he was a teenager during one of the clan’s raids, Zuzo hid in a town shop, refusing to pillage and kill. Fate had it that Mr. Bonko, a shoemaker and the proprietor of the establishment, didn’t scream when he saw Zuzo, but rather showed compassion for the poor goblin. He saw Zuzo’s warm heart and gentle touch and gave him an opportunity for a better life. And Zuzo repaid it over twelve years of working in ‘Bonko’s Boots’. With his skills and quick wit, he made new, fashionable footwear and saved the shop from bankruptcy. Having no kids, Mr. Bonko left the establishment to Zuzo in his will.

And thus began a second wave of hardships for this peculiar goblin, having to fight stereotypes and prying eyes, ill-wishers, and thieves. He read about the law to defend against false accusations; he taught himself basic arcana, for protection. His business survived three arsons, two floods, and seven burglaries—he stood the ground until the last blaze. Retrieving his cindered belongings, he packed his arms and reputation and ventured into the world.

Court dances filled the next decade of his life. From wealthy merchants and politicians to nobles, kings, and emperors, there isn’t a posh person who Zuzo hadn’t clad. They could mock him about his heritage but they couldn’t deny his exceptional tailoring. All wanted his designs, even plotting to get him to be exclusive. However, he remained as he always was: a goblin of the highest professionalism with passion and intuition for a fine cut.

Eventually, the court stories bored him and he settled in a dilapidated Tralin’s Theater that got a new owner. It was a small town and a fresh page, a new challenge: to bring life to the establishment, to clad the actors in the finest, eccentric costumes, and lend his craft for joy, arts, and beauty.

Roleplaying Zuzo

Of Gentle Heart and Touch Zuzo finds beauty in art, kindness, and prosperity. However, he is prone to embarrass those who behave badly in his presence. His dextrous hands allow him to achieve the highest of craft levels, both tinkering and tailoring.

Prankster This jolly goblin enjoys a good laugh and is often the cause of one. He is famous for his practical pranks involving stage props, which force actors to improvise and often result in an even better performance. The audience loves it and is awaiting the prank during the show.

Daydreamer and selectively focused Zuzo often dozes off during a conversation, designing his next dress in his mind. During work, he’s highly focused and almost unperceptive of his surroundings. Almost, because the moment someone touches his tools, he snaps back to reality.

Notable Combat Features

Trained Arcanist — Zuzo is a magic user of medium skill with expertise in conjuration magic. In battle, he animates and conjures objects to aid him.

Impervious Fashion — When not in his working clothes, Zuzo dresses in the latest high-class fashion. His enchanted suits grant him temporary quickness, endurance, and resistance to mundane weaponry.

Ik, a needle friend — Zuzo’s most deadly weapon. This animated needle is quick, terribly hard to spot, and is connected to the endless thread in Zuzo’s back pocket. In battle, it pierces and ties Zuzo’s enemies. The rumors say he once sewed the mouth of a deceitful nobleman.

Dud, a mannequin friend — This faceless, well-dressed animated caricature is Zuzo’s assistant and butler. Sometimes Zuzo talks to it while working. In battle, Dud is capable of giving serious punches with its wooden fists.

Sharp mind, teeth, and eyes — Zuzo has good vision in darkness, a quick problem-solving mind, and razor teeth. He usually only needs the first two for any situation.

Design Notes

Fill the battlefield with the most comical and dangerous tools: suffocating coats, flying needles, self-tying silk, gigantic pin cushion, snake-like tailoring measure rope, and shin-kicking stools. Zuzo’s battles are usually light-hearted with the goal to shame his aggressors. However, he is capable of more advanced magic if needed.

Encounters

You encounter Zuzo as he and Dud are fighting a bunch of thieves in a local town.

You encounter Zuzo in Tralin’s Theater workshop. He’s not kind to thugs and thieves.

You find Zuzo in a local town where he confronts his past clanmates. They demand ‘absence payment’ from Zuzo.

You encounter Zuzo after a chase in a local town where the party managed to hide in his shop. He shelters them.

You stumble upon Zuzo chasing after frenzied Dud, whose incantations went awry. He is trying to prevent Dud from hurting anyone while protecting it from the guards.

You are pointed to Zuzo via a third party when searching for clothing enchantments.

Quest Hooks

Zuzo’s needle Ik is broken. He needs a starsteel ore to make a new one.

Zuzo needs you to capture the current leader of the Blackarrow clan who treats Zuzo’s cousins and past friends with cruelty.

Zuzo needs you to break into the royal treasury. The king has falsely accused Zuzo of witchcraft and has taken Zuzo’s most expensive cloth. He wants them back.

There is an enchantment that would grant Dud the mannequin sentient characteristics. He’d be able to speak and think and have a soul. Zuzo will give anything if you find it for him.

Zuzo needs the party to retrieve a special royal gown from the emperor’s tomb. By the myth, the gown possesses the most powerful clothing enchantments ever seen.

Zuzo needs the party to collect feathers from the Giant Eagles of the mountains. He will use them to make the new costume and will enchant the party’s clothes in return.

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Layla Folkmann

Ever looked around a room full of talented peers and wondered if you had the secret sauce to stay in the game? If you ask Layla Folkmann, she’ll tell you there’s no secret to it at all—just stubbornness, consistency, and fortitude. Some days, that looks like slogging through the rough patches. Other days, it looks like international success. No matter what the day though, Folkmann is never without gratitude for her unshakable foundation—one built on encouragement and education, with no backup plan in sight.

Mural artist, painter, and public-art advocate, this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Layla Folkmann.

Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and how it’s influenced your path.

As a free-range child of artist parents, I have many fond memories of being immersed in the Edmonton arts scene. From running through gallery openings and eating an excess of cheese off unattended platters, to bouncing restlessly in theatre seats, these early experiences have undeniably influenced my life in both obvious and imperceptible ways.

Education and early encouragement are undeniably the foundation on which my art career rests. I attended Victoria Composite School and the Grant MacEwan Fine Arts program, which provided a solid technical vocabulary that I consistently apply to my work to this day. It’s all these elements that have allowed me to confidently throw myself into the professional realm with the knowledge that I could make it work as an artist.

What themes are you drawn to in your work?

Luminosity and vibrant harmonious colours are aesthetic themes that I work with in all aspects of my painting practice, whether abstracts, portraiture, or large-scale mural work. I'm constantly searching for exciting colour combinations in the world around me to translate into my painting.

Honest portraits of real people is another consistent theme that my artistic collaborator, Lacey Jane, and I explore in our public mural work (Lacey & Layla Art). We find portraiture to be a compelling tool to encourage human connectedness by representing authentic members of a community and, hopefully, strengthening local pride. We aim to celebrate each community's unique character and urban diversity and to highlight community members and the human experience. We also explore what we like to call “techno nature,” which is a combination of design-based graphic elements and natural scenes. These pieces are our exploration into our contemporary interpretation of the natural world.

How do large-scale murals and public art play to your strengths as a storyteller?

By the nature of their size and location, murals can be an impactful and compelling storytelling tool. They are accessible in public spaces and memorable with their imposing format. People have explored this format from prehistoric cave paintings and the Mexican revolution, to the graffiti in New York subway stations. The power of the format is undeniable, reaching everyday people in everyday places.

Art speaks a universal language, and what continues to excite me about public murals is that they remove both the real and perceived barriers of a gallery or museum space and release artwork into the public sphere.

Public art has an unparalleled ability to transform urban—and even rural—spaces into an open living gallery that is free and accessible to everyone. It redefines communal areas and creates new opportunities for engagement, curiosity, appreciation, and ownership for the beautification of often neglected or forgotten spaces.

Each story we tell is curated to the space and the community in which we create the artwork. Each new location provides an opportunity for a new narrative to touch on the core aspects of the neighbourhood and the people who exist within it.

What’s the first thing you ever made that inspired your artistic path? Did you know then that you’d unlocked something?

It has always been clear to me that art is what I was going to do; there was just never any other option. The form in which my career took was a happy accident and had everything to do with timing and chance. When I envisioned a career in the visual arts as a youth, becoming a mural artist wasn’t even on the radar. One opportunity presented itself, which led to the next, and then I ended up here. Luckily for me, there has been an international boom for mural art and I got on board early enough and have been riding that wave for over 10 years now. It seems that there is a new appreciation on the part of funding agencies and municipalities for the inherent value that murals can bring to a community.

Tell us a little about LALA (Lacey & Layla Art) and what that collaboration has meant to you.

My artistic collaboration with Lacey Jane has been fundamental to my continued growth as an artist. We initially met while studying Fine Arts at Grant MacEwan University in 2009 and have nurtured our “artnership” ever since. It is surprising to everyone, including ourselves, that we’ve maintained such a close friendship after the hundreds of travel hours and months of 12+ working hours a day in the rain, snow, and +40C heat. Each project has its unique challenges and unforeseen obstacles, but humour continues to be our greatest coping tool. Our enthusiasm for art is what brought us together, and it’s what continues to fuel our creative partnership. Together we push each other to take on bigger and more ambitious creative challenges.

What’s one piece of advice someone gave you growing up that turned out to be true. What’s one piece that didn’t hold up?

A professor of mine once mentioned that stubbornness, consistency, and fortitude are the qualities it takes to become a successful professional artist—not raw talent or early success. I see this truth demonstrated consistently within my artistic peer group. The people who make it work just simply do it, and then they keep doing it. They slog through the rough patches, make the right connections, and see it out the other side.

“Have a backup plan” was advice that didn’t hold up for me, personally. Perhaps it seems reckless to bet all your chips on red, but fully committing gave me the determination and motivation to pursue my passion without deviation or distraction.

What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?

Community is quite simply who one surrounds themselves with. I believe in making active choices rather than passive choices about those who remain in my close sphere. I consider those who I surround myself with to be a defining aspect of who I become as a person. I aim to have a community that I admire, full of positive, enthusiastic, and hard-working people who challenge and encourage me to become more of that myself.

When you’re struggling to stay on task, what’s your favourite way to procrastinate?

Productive procrastination seems to be a method I'm particularly fond of. I tell myself I can concentrate better when I “clean out my corners,” but I have a suspicion that is just an advanced avoidance technique. I also collect hobbies, such as soapmaking, felting, fermenting, carpentry, etc. Any of these can take precedence at inopportune times.

Tell us a little about what you’re currently working on or hoping to explore next.

My most substantial and challenging venture to date has been designing and building my own tiny house on wheels. It has been an ongoing, character-building exercise in creative problem-solving and patience, but it has me hooked. I am thrilled with the range of new skills it has taught me and the obstacles I've overcome. I did a whole lot of things wrong the first time before I could eventually get them right.

New and exciting mural projects with LALA are always in the works, and the winter months are dedicated to planning the next mural tour. Summers in Canada seem to disappear pretty quickly, but the winter allows me to decompress, plan, and create some studio work.

Most of my artistic career has been about mastering realism and representational work, but over the last few years, I have been exploring abstract painting to take a break from portraiture and the faithful replication of photographs. My abstracts provide me with a much-needed refuge in the pleasures of simple colour, light, and composition.

What excites you most about the YEG arts scene right now?

After relocating to Montreal for nine years and then returning to Edmonton, I’ve viewed the strength and quality of the YEG arts scene through a new lens. What I used to view as small, I now can appreciate for its intimacy, strength, warmth, and tight-knit community. The YEG support that our mural work has received throughout the years has been quite touching, and I feel quite at home.

Layla has collaborated on hundreds of murals across Canada and internationally in places such as Iceland, France, and northern Uganda. Layla has travelled extensively, having backpacked through nearly 40 countries. Over the past decade, she has received numerous grants, notable public projects and awards such as the 2021 Edmonton Artist Trust Fund Award. Layla is currently designing and building her own self-sufficient tiny house and maintains a full-time studio practice in her home town.

It was probably inevitable that Jim Jarmusch and Johnny Depp, two of American film's best-known off-beat artists, would collaborate, and it seems appropriate that they should do it in that quintessentially off-beat American genre, the "stoner Western."* Unfortunately, for some viewers the film just feels stoned: slow, meandering, and fixated on images that refuse to yield up their significance. It is, I think, one of those films that are more involving to think about after watching them, which is why its reputation has grown since its initial release, when Roger Ebert, among other critics, dismissed it as "unrewarding." It opens with a long montage of young accountant William Blake's (Depp) westward train journey from Cleveland to the end-of-the-line factory town called Machine, a name that suggests the real manifest destiny of the United States was the spread of industrial capitalism. Blake is on his way to a job with the Dickinson Metalworks in Machine, and is unaware that he shares a name with the poet and artist who was one of the great enemies of industrial capitalism. He dozes through spectacular scenery that has filled the great Westerns -- a reminder that before there were movies there were train windows. But when he arrives in Machine, no job is waiting for him, and his protests are futile when he demands to see Mr. Dickinson, who turns out to be the always-formidable Robert Mitchum in his last screen role. Moreover, that night he kills Dickinson's son in self-defense and, wounded himself, flees town on a stolen horse. Dickinson immediately hires a trio of gunmen to kill him. Blake is found half-dead from his wound by an Indian (Gary Farmer), who patches him up but also tells him that the bullet is lodged near his heart and he will die from it eventually. The Indian is called Nobody because he belongs to no tribe, having been abducted by white men as a child and taken to England to be exhibited. He was educated there and learned to love the art and poetry of William Blake, so naturally he proclaims the hapless accountant a reincarnation of the poet. And so Blake and Nobody begin an odyssey toward the Pacific, a picaresque in which Jarmusch manages to cross an adventure story with a satiric look at the failure of American ideals, using bits of Blake's prophetic verse as a running commentary. (Remarkably, quotations from Blake turn out to sound much like the kind of wisdom usually ascribed to Native Americans in the movies.) It's to Jarmusch's credit that this high-concept blend becomes as moving as it often is, especially, as I've suggested, in retrospect. *Jarmusch referred to Dead Man as a "psychedelic Western," but aside from the scene in which Nobody, under the influence of peyote, sees the skull beneath William Blake's skin, it doesn't have the conventional distortions and hallucinations associated with movie psychedelia.

Sir Wilfrid Russell Grimwade CBE (15 October 1879 - 2 November 1955) was an Australian chemist, botanist, industrialist and philanthropist. He was the son of Frederick Sheppard Grimwade and brother of Harold Grimwade.An endowment by Grimwald in 1929 was used to create the Russell Grimwade Prize, a scholarship for study of forestry. As of 2018, the annual prize value is $40,000.

He purchased Westerfield in 1920 as a rural retreat when it became popular for Melbourne’s prominent families to buy holiday houses on the Peninsula. It has no corridors, unusually shaped rooms, and the floors, skirtings, architraves, doors and built-in furniture pieces are all constructed from stained timber. There is also a water tank built inside a timber tower rising from the centre of the roof.The grounds around this property are what really astound. Sir Russell had a thirst for knowledge and a wide range of interests, including carpentry, photography, forestry and arboriculture. He was also a motoring fanatic and was the first to drive from Melbourne to Adelaide. He loved botanical literature and campaigned assiduously for the preservation of forests, and it is here at Westerfield that we see his love of plants and natives really come into play. There’s a eucalypt paddock, a long formal garden with flowerbeds and a lily pond, and the subjects of many of Sir Russell’s original plantings, including a crab apple tree, roses, lilacs, and lemon, apple and pear trees, still stand today. Cooks' Cottage was purchased in 1933 by Sir Russell Grimwade as a centenary gift to the people and State of Victoria. The cottage was moved, brick by brick from Great Ayton to Melbourne, shipped in 253 crates complete with a ivy cutting which had grown on the original building. Today the cottage is covered by the ivy.

Synopsis: Spider-Man, with his arm still in a sling, is perching on a building when he’s shaken off. Inside, he runs into The Shocker, whose vibro-shock units on his hands create strong punches and vibration waves that knock Spider-Man off-balance. Spider-Man’s punches are deflected by Shocker's vibrating body and he escapes. Moments later, Peter Parker walks to The Daily Bugle to sell The Shocker pictures when he’s met by Harry Osborn. Harry tells Pete his dad is paying for an apartment closer to school and invites Pete to move in. After Pete gets cash from J. Jonah Jameson, Frederick Foswell follows him as Patch, hoping for a connection with Spider-Man. In the meantime, The Shocker returns to his hideout and remembers the origin of his powers. Arrested for robbery, he created a fool-proof safecracking tool that vibrates loose any safe and used it to escape from prison. He created a costume that absorbs feedback and added a battery unit for power, turning into the powerful Shocker. At that moment, Peter picks up Aunt May at the train station and she tells him that Mrs. Watson invited her to move in, which works since Peter wants to move out too. As Peter drops Aun May at Mrs. Watson's house, he goes on a date with Mary Jane and they meet with Peter's friends for the farewell party of Flash Thompson, who was drafted to the army. During the meeting, Peter can't help but notice how attractive is Gwen Stacy, but since he is with Mary Jane and Gwen is with Harry, he decides to move along. After the party, Peter goes to change into Spider-Man in an alleyway when he’s almost caught by Patch. He fakes a conversation between Peter and Spider-Man about pictures and sends a dummy Spider-Man off to prevent Patch getting any suspicions. Afterward, Spider-Man hears reports of tremors near the Federal Reserve and he confronts The Shocker inside. After battling and dodging vibration blasts and falling concrete, Spider-Man finally webs up the vibro-shock thumb triggers and knocks out The Shocker. He takes pictures of the capture and returns home ready for the big move for Aunt May and himself. When Peter finally moves out of Aunt May's home and reaches the new apartment, he’s shocked at the size but also an odd feeling of depression and weariness that Peter can’t place. Bambi (1942)

Bambi is the last film of the Golden Age of Walt Disney animated productions. It was released in 1942, and has since received a 91% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the first Disney movie to feature no human characters in the cast.

Bambi is a masterfully created movie with beautiful scenery, animation, and plot. The backgrounds are very well-designed, featuring multiple seasons and landscapes. Additionally, as is well known, the animators worked with actual deer in order to study their anatomy, something that becomes quite obvious in the film. The deer are well-designed and well-animated, their movement graceful for a majority of the movie, and appropriately clumsy on occasion. As for the story, the length of the film may be short, but by narrating season by season, the writers manage to convey a whole year of information into just over an hour. Another highlight of the artwork are the brief abstract scenes, such as the deer frolicking through the meadow, and Bambi fighting with another buck over Faline, in which the emotions present are portrayed through color rather than dialogue, an exceptionally impressive feat. Another wonderful aspect of this movie is the music, which also heightens the emotions of the audience, shifting how we feel and pushing the story further along. I only have one grievance with Bambi, which is a problem I have been calling “girl Thumper,” although her real name is Miss Bunny. As previously mentioned in the summary, Bambi features a scene in which the protagonist and his two friends pair off with female characters, symbolic of them growing older. While this is fine, beyond Faline, Disney designed the other female love interests as exceptionally feminized versions of their male counterparts. This is less obvious in terms of Flower’s mate, so I predominantly disregard her in my criticism. However, when it comes to Thumper’s partner, she presents secondary-sex characteristics and gender roles typically prescribed to women. The fur tufts on the front of her body are exaggerated and rounded out to mimic boobs, and she very obviously has blush on her facial fur. The worst part is that Bambi features a normal-looking female rabbit, Thumper’s mom Mrs. Hare, which means the reason Miss Bunny looks so oddly feminine is strictly for the purpose of sexualising her so Thumper finds her attractive.

In conclusion, Bambi is a fantastic movie with a multitude of positive attributes including, but not limited to, its animation, art style, background artwork, music, storyline, and creative liberties. Overall, Bambi receives 9 out of 10 stars from me, a marvelous, near-perfect score. Two points were initially deducted due to the uncomfortable portrayal of female side characters as well as the fact the movie does not pass the Bechdel Test. However, for the wonderful music it has since regained a point, making it not only a near-perfect film, but also the best movie in the Golden Age.

Bambi opens with a large number of wild animals native to North America running about the forest, announcing the birth of a “new prince.” This scene later pans to the aforementioned prince, a fawn named Bambi, lying with his mother as his father looks on from a nearby rock. Everyone is exceptionally excited to be in the presence of the small deer and watch him as he ages. First he starts walking, then learns to talk, similar to the progression of a young human. He befriends a local bunny named Thumper, who helps him learn to speak by pointing out random forest objects (starting with birds, then a butterfly, and some flowers). While walking about in a patch of flowers he also meets a young skunk who goes by the same name, Flower. Another scene relevant to Bambi’s progression into teenage-, and later, adulthood, is when he visits the meadow with his mother. The meadow is an important location in the film, providing the deer and other critters with a beautiful open space to frolic and eat, but also a multitude of dangers due to the lack of coverage. Bambi’s mother, who is unnamed, introduces him to the meadow after she determines it is safe. Bambi runs around, exploring the scenery while his mother grazes. He runs into another fawn by the name of Faline, who chases them back towards a small bluff. Their mothers introduce them to one another, but Bambi is still skeptical of his new friendship. However, the duo wander off together, observing the other deer in the meadow, one of which is Bambi’s father. Bambi’s father is the “Great Prince of the Forest,” a deer who commands a lot of respect, which is demonstrated in this scene. There are some sequences in which the seasons change, showing Bambi and his mother eating tree bark to sustain themselves during the winter. They become exceptionally happy when the beginnings of spring show in the meadow, a small patch of juicy grass sitting in the open. Halfway through their meal, Bambi’s mother becomes concerned about their surroundings. She tells Bambi to run back to the thicket, in which he succeeds, but she does not make it; gunshots can be heard in the background and Bambi’s mother is killed by a hunter. The Great Prince of the Forest finds Bambi and tells him that his mother is gone. It is implied that he raises his son on his own for the remainder of his childhood. Bambi returns to part of the forest he was raised in when he gets older, obviously more independent and mature, but still new to the world around him. He talks to Friend Owl, and mid-discussion reunites with Thumper and Flower. Friend Owl advises the trio that at their age they are susceptible to falling in love, which they deny. They begin to take a walk through the woods, one by one becoming attracted to another one of their species and pairing off. First Flower encounters a female skunk, then Thumper finds another rabbit, and finally Bambi reunites with Faline. After catching up with Faline, Bambi runs into another buck who becomes defensive over her. The two of them fight in a series of flashing lights before Bambi knocks the other off a ledge, victorious. He then pairs up with Faline, a romantic time lapse observed between them. One morning Bambi leaves Faline alone, drawn away by an unfamiliar smell. He sees several tents surrounding a campfire, which his father also notices. The Great Prince of Forest comments on the great influx of men in the forest. The following scene shows a myriad of animals running for their lives, being shot, and the campfire spreading. Faline is chased by a group of hunting dogs, which Bambi fends off, allowing her to escape. He gets shot in his escape, falling on the ground. The Great Prince of the Forest insists he gets up, encouraging him to join the other animals on a small island considered safe from the fire. After the chaos ends, the forest is shown in ruin but gradually regrowing. Bambi and Faline have both aged, having two fawns of their own, and Bambi joining his father as one of the most respected deer in the forest.

A Year in Review!

Well, this has... been a year, hasn’t it?  A lot of ups, and a lot of downs, both to the wider world and personally.  But, with that last digit moving on up, I’m gonna take a moment to look back on what this year meant for me, and what 2023 means moving forward!

First, well... Meet me!  I haven’t been very active on this account until about half way through 2022, so anyone looking around knows pretty much nothing about me.  Since I plan to be way more active this coming year, let me shed some light!

I’m Void, but I also like the name Coda, if you’re so inclined.  I mostly go by She/Her, but I’m experimenting a bit with She/They, so either work for me.  I’m aromantic asexual, and damn does that feel nice to say with confidence.

I draw all sorts of stuff, but I mostly dabble and practice in character and creature design.  I love dragons, monsters and horror creatures, fantasy and D&D, Sci-fi and aliens, and writing and worldbuilding!

I’m not squeamish or over sensitive by any stretch, but too much of anything is a bummer, ain’t it?  And while I’m not sex repulsed, please keep your kinks to yourself.

I drew quite a few things for personal projects that I never got to post (and I’m not quite allowed to yet), I do have some highlights to share!

This was actually one of the earliest pieces I drew this year, back in January.  I posted it to Twitter, but not here on Tumblr.

Here’s a character design I made for a short horror game project for school during my Spring semester.  I call him Old Mr. Smiler, and he just wants to keep a... close eye on you.

This here is Patches!  I think if you go back far enough on this blog, an older version of him is back there somewhere.  I made him with the idea of “What would I do if I made a children’s show?”  So, Patches!

Smaugust, now that was a fun challenge!  I know it took quite a while to finish it, but I’m glad I did.  Here are my top 5 favorites from the batch in no particular order.  I think I’d like to do it again this year, and hopefully get it done on time, maybe with a more specific secondary prompt list.  This whole batch reminded my how much I loved dragons, they’re what got me into drawing.  So, I think I’ll indulge much more this next year.

And finally, how could I leave out a representative from my Kirby art collection?  My actual favorite pieces I’ve done I can’t show y’all yet, but I think the one that started it all is a good stand in.  It’s been a fun character design exercise, taking a game with characters that are mostly just circles and making humanoid designs out of them.  Also helped that I had a lot of Thoughts about the Kirby series, enough to form it into its own AU, that I’m having a blast writing.

So, what should you expect now that I’m looking to be more active this year?  While I can’t promise much in the beginning, I’m graduating in May (hopefully), so we’ll see where things take me.  I’m hoping to carve out much more regular time for myself this time around.

First, lets start with my fan content!  I have a lot of fandoms and interest.  To name a few, we have Kirby (of course), but also Undertale, the Owl House, Hades, Pokémon, Dungeons and Dragons, Good Omens, and Animal Crossing!  I’m hoping to show my love of all of these series.  Some might pop up more than others, but I’m hoping to show some more stuff off.

Of course I’ll be continuing to expand on the Kirby Incarnations AU.  But did you know I have an Undertale AU?  I’ve been drawing and writing for it for years now, just not posting it here much.  I’ll be fixing that of course, look out for the Funny Things AU tag.

As much as I love fan work, I do have my own personal projects and characters I want to play with and explore.  Writing and drawing bring me so much joy, and I hope to share that with everyone.

As a fun exercise, throughout the year, I’ll be trying to draw every card from the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck.  Tarot has always fascinated me, so I’ll be essentially drawing my own deck.  Maybe I’ll do an end of year reading, who knows?  Expect those about twice a month (hopefully!!!!!!!).

I actually have a massive world building project I’d love to show my art and writing for.  I have a fun character with a colorful life I’d love to explore with anyone who’s interested.

He’s a nerd, he’s a queer trans man, he’s traveled around his world, and he lives his midlife dream with his husband and twin daughters as a professor and staunch labor rights activist.  What’s not to like?

I’ll probably set up an ask blog for that specifically, so keep an eye out for that announcement!

I’m actually a Game Development major in school, and I’ve been neck deep in my senior thesis (hence my disappearance since August).  I’m the Creative Director for a team of 13, and we’re all working hard to complete a fun little stealth puzzle experience called Sintern!  I’m hoping to share more details and the character concept art I made for it as it gets closer to completion.  And, possibly, answer some questions about Game Development to anyone who wants my perspective.

I learned how to use Zbrush in the Fall semester.

It’s honestly been the most fun I’ve had in school in so long, and I think I’ve found my career passion.  Likewise, I’m going to be practicing and developing my portfolio.  I’ll share some process and glamor shots with y’all, from concept to completion!

Exactly what it sounds like.  I want to improve my art, find my weaknesses, and address them!  So, expect anatomy studies, object studies, background studies, color pallet experiments, all sorts of stuff!

I write stories too!  I’m a Creative Writing minor, and I’m hoping to publish some stuff someday.  So, if you see me drop a piece on the dashboard every once in a while, you know why.  Speaking of....

I’m a writer.  I’m an artist.

And there’s been a story I’ve wanted to tell for years.  I think this will finally be the year I share some of it.  What is it you may ask?  Well....

You’ll just have to wait and see, my wandering eyes.
