Finally got around to my 2022 book recs list. I read 55 books last year, which is fantastic considering grad school and all that stalled my fun reading for a long time. Obviously I read The Locked Tomb series and I think you should too. Other than that, it's almost all manga and romances on this list. That was my escapism vibe last year, but it's also what the readers in my library enjoy so it's what I'm happy to keep up with.

In vaguely the order I read them, last year's faves are:

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories--I read the entire Folk of the Air series over December/January and it's all great but this novella was my favorite. Holly Black continues to be the best at fairies. I loved how the two characters in the central romance are desperately feral in their own way. This one will make little to no sense without the context of the whole series, and so I reccomend the whole series. It's about an angry human girl who grows up in Fairyland, the dilettante fairy prince who hates her, and all the amoral fairy intrigue and violence that being part of a high court entails.

In the Dream House--I don't normally read memoirs but this has such an intriguing cover. I didn't expect to be taken for a ride through deep feelings about queerness, gender, latinidad, trauma, historiography, relationships, and just like, being a person who occupies space. It's about the author's abusive relationship, yes, but also it's poetically and ruthlessly about her as an entire person.

Alexis Hall--not a book but a rather prolific romance author. Mostly mlm romances, but he runs the gamut in terms of genre and content. I particularly enjoyed Pansies, where a guy goes back to his small hometown after recently coming out and ends up falling for and trying to make amends to the kid he bullied a bit in high-school. How to Bang a Billionaire looks like it's meant to be a Fifty Shades ripoff but its actually really good BDSM with a sub who's knowledgeable and just having a fun time, but the dom has some heavy trauma that I don't know everyone would be down for so heads up. He also has a couple novels that have become very popular recently, so I expect we'll be seeing him a lot. Overall, I appreciate that all of his protags have way more going on than just the relationship, but also the relationships do have genuine chemistry.

Boys Run the Riot--a short manga series about a Trans high-schooler who wants to start a streetwear brand with his friends. It brings up different aspects of queerness and queer culture in Japan, which is really cool.

From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler--my husband gifted me a copy because it's one of my favorite childhood books and I'm so happy to say it still holds up even a good sixty years later. A girl convinces her brother to run away to the Met and they become caught up in a mystery surrounding a recent acquisition. The kids are smart as heck but still very much kids and E.L. Konigsburg's writing style has always felt very cozy to me.

Totsukuni no Shoujo/The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil a Rún-- we've established I enjoy fairytales where the fae get to be properly monstrous. This is another manga series, this time about a little girl in a cursed forest who is taken in by a creature she calls "Teacher". He tries to care for her and keep her from becoming cursed herself. Charming, a little spooky, a little sad, and very gorgeous.

Perfect World--a manga series where an able-bodied interior designer reconnects with an architect childhood friend who is now disabled and uses a wheelchair; they fall in love, work together to create accesibly designed buildings, and navigate both his specific disability and being disabled in Japanese society at large. A ton of research obviously went into this series, but more importantly a lot of heart.

Wherever is Your Heart-- novella. Anita Kelly writes some good-ass queer romance of all flavors but this one is particularly noteworthy in being butch4butch and having protagonists in their late forties. It's fairly short and sweet, but you don't need much more than that to enjoy it when June finally works up the courage to ask the bartender at her favorite bar on a date.

And the best book I read in 2022:

House of Leaves-- so this is a book about a guy transcribing an academic work written by different guy about a documentary filmed by another guy about moving into a house with his family. It's also about narratives within narratives, the relationship between reading and the reader, and the relationship between the storyteller and the story. It’s a love letter to academic analysis and a scathing critique of academic analysis. It's actual posmodernism. It's a damn good horror novel. It's an experience. It's a book that 100% could never work as anything other than a book. People will tell you it's a hard read but it's not! You just have to engage with it and think about it a little. Read it! It's great!

Thoughts on: Ikoku Nikki

I am currently reading Ikoku Nikki by Tomoko Yamashita and I noticed that like a solid quarter of the scenes in this manga do absolutely nothing to drive the plot forward.

It's not even funny banter or world building or whatever, it's literally just mundane little scenes like this:

You could honestly skip all of these scenes, and the plot would still make just as much sense.

But the thing is, I think doing so would make this manga considerably worse.

The manga is about a 15-year-old girl being taken in by her very introverted aunt, after losing her parents in an accident. And these mundane little scenes do an incredible job of grounding the whole story.

For one thing, it fleshes out the characters, it makes them feel real. You can really believe they all have their own lives with their own thoughts and feelings, their own problems and worries which are largely unrelated to the main plot.

It also makes the story feel very realistic. Like, yeah, sorry your parents just died, but you still need to go to school and worry about stuff like fucking lunchboxes. Yes, you just took in your orphaned teenage niece, but you still need to work... and maybe tidy up your room?

Just like in real life, the rest of the world in this manga doesn't care that the main character's world just got turned upside down. The earth just mercilessly keeps on spinning, and the protagonist has to go on living somehow, with all the mundanity and irrelevancy that comes with everyday life.

“Did I tell you how beautiful you look today?” My boyfriend, Tom, told me once again.

I was at his house, his parents nor siblings were not home. They didn’t know about me and Tom. To them we are just ‘Friends’, we just liked to keep it that way. We’re only sixteen and if we told them both our parents might go mad at us. They probably won’t ever let us have sleep overs anymore or even do day to day things together.

“Stoppp” I blush, hands coming up to cover my face. Tom always has had that affect on me, I mean we have been friends since we were six, but even before we were dating he used to make me blush.

“Don’t cover your cute face” He told me, removing my hands from my face. We were laying on his already made bed in his room, the door closed, facing each other. “You hungry?” He asked knowing you both hadn’t had any diner yet.

“Yeah a little, you?” You reply running your hand through his curls.

“Wanna order some food? It’s 8:42p.m and I don’t think my parents will be back” He smiled opening the delivery app on his phone. “Yes! wait tell me why again you didn’t go see your aunt too?” You question. His parents and all his brothers had gone to see his aunt who lived a bit far away, but he hadn’t gone.

“Told them I was going out for a little while. I’m not gonna miss a chance where me and my girl get the house to our selfs” He winks not bothering to ask what I would want as he knew what to order anyways.

“Aww you shouldn’t have, Tommy” You smile at your cute boyfriend.

“Love, I wanted to have the day to ourselves, the whole day it was just me and you. I love you” He pecked your lips.

“I love you too, and it was an amazing day”

We ate our food about an hour ago, we’re now laying on his bed cuddling under a throw over blanket he had. It wasn’t too cold tonight so we decided not to get under the covers yet. My leg was wrapped around Toms body, his hand resting on my leg. He was stroking my bare skin softly, getting higher each time.

Today I decided to wear a small, cute tight black skirt. It was just a cute basic outfit, well that’s what I thought. But for Tom he felt turned on by my little skirt. I wasn’t wearing any tights or anything under and as my legs being wrapped in his made it ride up a little, showing a little bit of my ass.

Eventually I realised his hand being under my skirt, I look up at him to see him innocently looking at the tv. I smirk as Tom caresses my ass, his hand giving it a little squeeze. That’s when I had enough, I sit up looking at him in the eyes.

“What’s wrong, darling?” He tried so hard not to smirk. I didn’t answer, instead I peeled the small blanket off myself and him moving it on the bed somewhere. I move so both my legs are each sides of his hips, straddling him. We were now in the middle of his bed, me on top of his lap.

He smirked bringing his hands to rest on my hips, I could feel his bulge in his joggers. “Kiss me then” Is all I have to say for him to smash our lips together. It was slow at first, lips moved in sync as tongues teased. The kiss got heated pretty quickly and without realising I started to grind slowly into his clothed erection.

“ahh. Don’t tease me baby” He pulled away with a little moan as he started to attack my neck hungrily.

“Tommy” I moan as he sucked on my skin leaving purple marks. He then pulled me back into his lips, his hands lifting my skirt up a little as he squeezed it again. His fingers touching my black laced thong. Tom waisted no time to slide his tongue into my mouth making the kiss more hard and rough then slow.

He then flipped us over him now hovering above me. My legs were now loosely wrapped around his waist as my arms went to the back of his neck. He slowly started to grind down into me, my skirt being lifted all the way up so you could fully see my thong. He groaned at the friction of our clothed areas.

I kissed him again taking off his shirt and grinding up which made me moan. “Fuck, baby. I need more” I tell him and he stops his actions.

“You sure?” He asks wanting my consent, I nod to him. “Words, princess” He smirked as I grinned saying ‘Yes’. However as soon as our lips met again for another deep kiss, Toms bedroom door opened. We didn’t hear the knock, the tv was playing in the background and we didn’t care about nothing else.

Nikki, his mother, and his father, Dom, entered the room. There eyes grew wide as they saw the two of our grinding into each other, panting whilst deeply kissing one another. This was so unexpected by them as the relationship was unknown.

“What the fuck!” Nikki raised her voice, our actions stopping as both our heads turn to see his parents with wide eyes. Panic rose in us, I quickly pulled my skirt down hiding my underwear from his parents. Tom jumped off me, grabbing his shirt that was on the floor.

“I-erm it’s not what it looks like!” Tom said as his brothers came into the room.

“Oh shit, did you finally get caught” Harry laughed pointing at us, our cheeks growing red.

“Right, out, out. You got this?” Dom pushed Harry and the other two out the room as Nikki nodded her head. I sat up a little more as Nikki looked at us both.

She sighs before speaking, “So your both dating?” She asked.

“Yes”

“How long?”

“6 months” Tom answers.

“Well I’m not mad your dating, your just both so young. And like I understand you have these feelings that are sexual for one another but your only sixteen.” She says. “Thomas I don’t want you to make her pregnant” She blurts out.

“W-we use protection” Tom tells her.

“Okay, that’s fine I guess. Just please next time lock the door and be carful. I love y/n like a daughter i’ve never had so don’t rush it” She smiles.

Wow, didn’t expect that.

“Thank you Nikki” I smile at her as she walks out.

“Phew. Okay. She took that surprisingly well” Tom breathed out sitting next to you.

“I know, that was scary” I laugh.

“Now where was we” Tom smirked leaning into me.

“Oh I forgot door stays open” Nikki walks back in opening the door.

“Fuck sakes” Tom mutters making me giggle.

This is so bad.
