Exchange of Twins

Plot:

Ok so the basic idea for this is that, during one of their experiments, Fred and George acidentally swap places with a different version of themselves from another universe :

in this universe, they are not really twins as one of them is a product of rape and, due to that neglected and hated by...pretty much the entire family including the other "twin".

Naturally, the neglected twin is a slytherin and friends with the silver trio, hating Harry with passion from the moment he defended Ron from Draco.

The slytherin twin is not found of pranks, aspiring to be a potion's teacher once he graduates but he does have rather sarcastic sense of humor.

Needless to say, both the slytherin and his "twin" hate the universe they see themselves transported to and act like major assholes for a good chunk of the fict untill they start to mellow.

The canonverse Twins on the other hand, they are horrified and pissed at that universe's version of their family.

Rules:

1.You don't have to stick with canon ships....in fact i heavily encourage that you don't (just please let be Bill be with Fleur, they are cute)

2.In neither of the universes you are allowed to pair Harry with Molly Weasley, Arthur Weasley, Neville, Susan Bones, Crable, Goyle or any of the two members of the golden trio.

3.No reader-inserts, self-inserts, or unhappy endings are allowed.

4. spanking, watersports, extremely underage ships or parent/child incest are only allowed if portrayed on a negative light.

5.Peter Petigrew and Dolores Umbridge must be bashed on both universes.

6. You are not allowed to bash Draco Malfoy, Remus Lupin,Sirius Black or Severus Snape.

7. Pretty much all the weasley's must be bashed on the universe the twins get transported to, sans one weasley of you choice (wich can't be Ron ).

8.Dumbledore must be gay in both universes and atracted to Grindewalt and Grindewalt alone.

9.on the fict that inspired this plot bunny the "twin" of the neglected slytherin Weasley freaking rapes his fake twin wich is one of the reasons why they hate each other.....i was going to leave the decision of doing that or not up to you but...it does help giving a more solid reason for them to hate each other so you must do it.

10. also on the inspiration fict, the slytherin "twin" is actually a FTM transgender...that i will leave up to you as i'm awere that not everyone is capable of writing trangender peeps accurately (heck...I am not capable of writing trangender peeps accurately) so...yeah.....don't do that unless you're either trans or have a trans sensible reader

11. poor grammar is not allowed (you don't need a beta but at least use grammarly some form of grammar corrector)

12.the Slytherin twin can be a Veela but that's the only kind of creature he can be. The other "twin" must not be a creature of any kind.

13 . in both universes,Hagrid can only be paired with Madame Maxine and no one else

14. in both universes,Mad Eye Moody and Amelia Bones can't be paired with anyone

15. in both universes,Minerva Mcgonagal can only be paired with Poppy Pomfrey or anyone on the staff that she never taugh herself.

16. in both universes,Crabbe and Goyle can only be paired with Daphne Greengrass, Astoria Greengrass, Milicent Bulstrode, Susan Bones, Hannah Abbot, each other or an Oc.

That day, looking at another boy on the ground, with a crooked tie, dirty clothes, and blood smeared on his chin from a broken nose, bruises spreading on his face... Who was laughing at the same time into a state of hiccups. Laughed as he got beat up badly by Ron himself who had had enough of his bullying that day. Ron was stunned. It was too weird. Too out of character for a blond bastard.

Something shifted that day. He hated him still, he desperately wanted to kick him one more time to shut him up but he couldn't. So Ron just watched until at some point he felt something cold turning in his stomach. He didn't know what it was, but it was disgusting. So he turned and hurried away. He didn't run at all.

The Weasleys Aren't Great Parents...

I know a lot here love to talk about how the Weasleys were so good to take Harry in and all that... But the truth is, the parenting skills of Molly and Arthur Weasley are questionable at best.

I'm not saying they don't love their kids and Harry — they do, and they do so honestly. I'm just here to say they aren't actually a good example of parenting.

Like, when fans talk about the Weasleys what I usually see is either treating them like they are a perfect example of a family or unfair bashing. So, while I definitely believe that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley love their kids, this post showcases where their parenting skills are lacking...

So, the Weasleys, to Harry, seem like the perfect example of a happy, loving family. Now, I'm not saying there isn't love there, but the family dynamics we see aren't great, to put it lightly. Harry just has no reference for anything better.

Children Running Away

The first thing I want to mention here is that all Weasley children leave the Burrow and their parents the first chance they get.

Bill goes to work for Gringotts in Egypt.

Charlie goes to tame dragons in Romania.

Percy, well, Percy is a whole can of worms right there. But once his parents shun him for being more successful than his father in the ministry, he doesn't look back.

Fred and George leave Hogwarts in the middle of their seventh year and move out of home then, before their even done with school.

I don't think that's normal. This is what we see in houses where there is mistreatment of children, so they don't want to stay any moment longer than necessary. Because all of this, what all of them did, was running away from home.

Each of these Weasleys was seventeen — maybe eighteen when he chose to leave (sometimes the country). This is running away, even if they still talk to their parents, they did rub away from living under the same roof.

This already suggests to me something unhealthy is going on there.

favoritism

Any child psychologist would tell you one of the worst things a parent could do is pick favorites amongst their children. All children, favored or not, suffer from it.

And Mr. And Mrs. Weasley.... well, they showcase favoritism constantly, here is an example from Order of the Phoenix:

“Get him red and gold to match his badge,” said George, smirking. “Match his what?” said Mrs. Weasley absently, rolling up a pair of maroon socks and placing them on Ron’s pile. “His badge,” said Fred, with the air of getting the worst over quickly. “His lovely shiny new prefect’s badge.” Fred’s words took a moment to penetrate Mrs. Weasley’s preoccupation about pajamas. “His . . . but . . . Ron, you’re not. . . ?” Ron held up his badge. Mrs. Weasley let out a shriek just like Hermione’s. “I don’t believe it! I don’t believe it! Oh, Ron, how wonderful! A prefect! That’s everyone in the family!” “What are Fred and I, next-door neighbors?” said George indignantly, as his mother pushed him aside and flung her arms around her youngest son.

(Order of the Pheonix, page 163)

Molly is so glad to have prefects in the family, that she actually ignores the fact Fred and George aren't prefects and are her kids. George actually calls her out on it, except she isn't actually listening to him l. No, she pushes him aside. This treatment is insane, and I don't blame them for up and leaving the moment they turned seventeen.

This favoritism is seen more, this is from Chamber of Secrets:

“Sorry, Mum, but see, we had to —” All three of Mrs. Weasley’s sons were taller than she was, but they cowered as her rage broke over them. “Beds empty! No note! Car gone — could have crashed — out of my mind with worry — did you care? — never, as long as I’ve lived — you wait until your father gets home, we never had trouble like this from Bill or Charlie or Percy —” “Perfect Percy,” muttered Fred. “YOU COULD DO WITH TAKING A LEAF OUT OF PERCY’S BOOK!” yelled Mrs. Weasley, prodding a finger in Fred’s chest. “You could have died, you could have been seen, you could have lost your father his job —” It seemed to go on for hours. Mrs. Weasley had shouted herself hoarse before she turned on Harry, who backed away. “I’m very pleased to see you, Harry, dear,” she said. “Come in and have some breakfast.”

(Chamber of Secrets, page 38)

Prefect Percy is better than Fred and George and they should learn from him and be more like him, according to Mrs. Weasley. This sort of comparison between children is really harmful to their development and is frowned upon by most. Definitely by me.

Not to mention how Harry is definitely a favorite of hers, so much so he does not get shouted at for the same crime, but get's food. That is honestly the bare minimum she can do for him considering...

Harry's Abuse

The Weasleys are aware of Harry's abuse. They are made aware of it time and time again, and with all their love for Harry — they do nothing more than give him food when he asks. I don't think I need to explain why this is terrible.

“I don’t blame you, dear,” she assured Harry, tipping eight or nine sausages onto his plate. “Arthur and I have been worried about you, too. Just last night we were saying we’d come and get you ourselves if you hadn’t written back to Ron by Friday. But really” (she was now adding three fried eggs to his plate), “flying an illegal car halfway across the country — anyone could have seen you —” She flicked her wand casually at the dishes in the sink, which began to clean themselves, clinking gently in the background. “It was cloudy, Mum!” said Fred. “You keep your mouth closed while you’re eating!” Mrs. Weasley snapped.“They were starving him, Mum!” said George. “And you!” said Mrs. Weasley, but it was with a slightly softened expression that she started cutting Harry bread and buttering it for him.

(Chamber of Secrets, page 39)

George here outright tells her Harry was being starved — this goes ignored. When Harry writes to her to send him food, she sends it, but doesn't ask him why he isn't being fed:

She had no idea that Harry was not following the diet at all. The moment he had got wind of the fact that he was expected to survive the summer on carrot sticks, Harry had sent Hedwig to his friends with pleas for help … Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper, had obliged with a sack full of his own homemade rock cakes. (Harry hadn’t touched these; he had had too much experience of Hagrid’s cooking.) Mrs. Weasley, however, had sent the family owl, Errol, with an enormous fruitcake and assorted meat pies.

(Goblet of Fire, page 28)

No, she sent him food but didn't bother doing anything to help a child out of a clearly abusive situation. Not even asking why he isn't getting enough food.

Arthur Weasley isn't any better. He knows just as much as Molly and even met Harry's pleasant relatives:

“Harry said good-bye to you,” he said. “Didn’t you hear him?” “It doesn’t matter,” Harry muttered to Mr. Weasley. “Honestly, I don’t care.” Mr. Weasley did not remove his hand from Harry’s shoulder. “You aren’t going to see your nephew till next summer,” he said to Uncle Vernon in mild indignation. “Surely you’re going to say good-bye?”

(Goblet of Fire, page 48)

He acts as if the Dursleys are normal. As if a child saying their caretakers wouldn't care he wasn't there isn't cause for alarm. No, Arthur Weasley just thought it impolite and odd, but not enough to actually do something to help Harry. Just annoy Uncle Vernon.

Blaming Kids For Things Not Their Fault

“You?” she said, catching her teacup as it scampered happily away across the desk on four sturdy little willow-patterned legs and replacing it in front of her. “Why should I be worried about you?” “When Mum’s next letter finally gets through Umbridge’s screening process,” said Ron bitterly, now holding his cup up while its frail legs tried feebly to support its weight, “I’m going to be in deep trouble. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s sent a Howler again.” “But —” “It’ll be my fault Fred and George left, you wait,” said Ron darkly. “She’ll say I should’ve stopped them leaving, I should’ve grabbed the ends of their brooms and hung on or something. . . . Yeah, it’ll be all my fault. . . .”

(Order of the Pheonix, page 679)

After Fred and George leave Hogwarts, Ron tells Hermione she should worry about him because he would suffer their mother's ire. He speaks about it as if it's a regular occurrence. Like he regularly gets blamed for Feed and George's mishaps when the twins aren't there.

This is incredibly unfair to Ron, Fred, and George. There is no reason Ron should fear his parent's response for something he had no control over.

Conclusions

As I stated above, I don't think Arthur and Molly Weasley are abusive or neglectful or that they don't love their kids. They are far from perfect, loving, and dotting parents I see them sometimes portrayed as. Neither are they as awful as I sometimes see them. Like many characters in this series, they are more complex than that.

“Alright, that’s enough! Shut it!” I yell from my position in front of the conversing Gryffindors.

At my shout they all shut their mouths.

Finally, thank God.

“Alright now listen to me,” I say to the Gryffindors as I pace the field with rain falling all over me, getting in my eyes and drenching my uniform and hair, “Just because you go lucky enough to be selected for the Quidditch team last year does not guarantee you a spot in for this year. Last year our team was absolutely abominable, we lost to Hufflepuff of all teams. Now that I’m Captain I’m not losing to any team especially not Slytherin. Play fair and play well. The official team will be posted on the common room notice board by Friday night. Have fun.”

And with that everyone takes off into the air and starts playing, some noticeably better than others.

After playing for a whole round,and freshening up, the boys and I meet up with Hermione in the library to study.

“Hey, how were trials?” Hermione lifts her head out of a big dusty book and looks up to see us walking towards us, Ron looking like he was going to collapse any second and Harry with a rare skip in his step.

“They were surprisingly good, loads of potential. We’ll definitely get the house cup this year and our Ron here might just be our new keeper.” I say as I put my arm around Ron’s and he puts his head on my shoulder from exhaustion.

“Yeah ‘Mione, you should’ve seen me on the pitch today, I was absolutely unstoppable…Oh! And by the way,” Helifts his head from my shoulder and looks at me, “You know that Cormac McLaggen guy?”

“Yes…?” I respond, unsure of where this conversation will go.

“Do you think you’d want to go out with him?”

I’m caught off guard with hi s question and stutter my response, “W-what? I…I don’t know, I mean…maybe? I don’t know. What, why?”

“He asked me to hook you guys up on the pitch earlier and I just wanted to make sure you wouldn’t want to actually go out with him before I bash his head against a wall.”

Harry grabs a couple of books from different shelves and puts them down on our table.

I laugh before answering, “No Ron don’t worry about bashing his head, I don’t know him that well, maybe he’s a good guy, I might go out with him or I might not, we’ll see.”

Ron and Harry had always been like brothers to me. And Ron was especially always overprotective. We’d spent almost all of our childhood together his family and I, since I hated being in my h̶o̶m̶e̶ house so much, the Weasley’s had almost taken me in as one of their own and I never felt any more or less than them. I would stay at either their house or at Sirius’, making all of us that much closer.

“Hey Y/N?” Harry says slowly, looking at something behind me. “Why is Nott glaring at you?”

“What?” I say, confused, as I turn around to find the dark haired boy glaring at me, his quill half snapped in his strong hold. We hold eye contact for a second before he breaks away, turns to Blaise besides him, picks up his things and quickly strides out the library, his cologne lingering as he passes me.

“That’s strange.” Hermione recites my thoughts.

“Right? What’s his deal? Anyway,” Ron says before turning to Harry but my thoughts linger to that moment.

What’s going on?

About a week later in potions, Theo won’t even look at me much rather talk.

“Hello? What’s your deal?” I whisper, waving my quill in front of his blue eyes trying to catch his attention.

He breaks away from his daze and (finally) meets my eyes.

“Hm? What? No I’m fine.” He says, resting his head on his fist and looking ahead at Slughorn explaining the reaction of something.

I furrow my brows.

“Upset with how well our team is doing? I bet you can already tell we’ll kick your Slytherin arses.” I smirk at him but he doesn’t seem to notice my remark and has that laid out look in his eyes again.

“Theo?” I say more gently and brush my hand against his arm lightly.

He immediately flinces away in…pain? Which only worries me further.

Did I do something wrong?

He blinks a few times before meeting my eyes with his blue ones and I can see a slight hint of pain in them as they get slightly glassy.

“Theo what’s wrong?” I say again in the same quiet gentle tone. Luckily we're at the back of the dark room and everyone else is too immersed in Slughorn’s lecture to notice us.

“I…” He starts off, “I’m not sure, I just- I don’t know.” He pauses for a moment before looking away, blinking his eyes and returning, “It’s nothing I’m…I’m fine don’t worry.” he flashes me a forced smile which only deepens my frown.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, of course. And for the record, we’re gonna win this Friday.” he smirks at me, going back to his normal state.

“What? No way, have you even seen your team? And anyway with you as captain, we’re sure to win.”

“Excuse me? We’ve got the best of the best this year, that house cup is ours.”

"With my level of quidditch experience, I can probably-"

"Even with that level of whatever, you're still 5”2."

"HEY-"

“Ahem.” Slughorn inturrepts me as everyone in the class looks back and I cower back into my seat with Theo trying to surperess his laugh in his hand.

Well. At least I made him smile.

“God I hope it doesn’t rain.” Harry says from besides me, looking up at the sky nervously in anticipation of the match in less than five minutes.

“Yeah me too.” I say equally as nervous.

“Alright alright alright! Welcome everyone to the first match of the season. We’ve got the two best teams, in my opinion, sorry ravens and puffs, Gryffindor verses Slytherin!” Lee Jordan calls out from his mic.

“Now we want a nice, clean game alright?” Lee continues with the speech he’s forced to read out at every match and I lock eyes with sparkling blue ones across the field which are already staring back at me.

I mouth “We’re gonna win” at him an he smirks at me before mouthing back, “You’ve got no chance, love.”

“...Alright and with that, let the match begin!”

We all take into the air, getting into our positions almost immediately.

After almost an hour the snitch hasn’t been caught yet by either Harry or Draco and we’re tied 7-7.

Cormac flies up to me when everyone is slow and visibly tired having played non stop at full effort for a while and are all waiting for one of the seekers to catch the snitch.

“Hey Y/N, what are you doing tomorrow?” he asks casually, as if we’re not in the middle of a quidditch match.

“Huh? Oh I don’t know.” I respond trying to flat away to hit the bludger, until I’m followed by Cormac once again.

“Well I was just wondering, you know if you don’t have any plans then maybe you’d like to go to Hogsmeade with me?”

“Yeah sure whatever Cormac.” I say trying to brush him off.

I need to focus on this game. I’ll deal with whatever this idiot’s blabbering on about later. Once we’ve won.

Cormac smiles and whispers a ‘yes!’ to himself and I look across to the goal post where I see Theo staring back at us with a look in his eyes.

It wasn’t anger but hurt?

I shot the bludger as hard as I could and scored another point at which time Harry had just caught the snitch. The crowd erupted into cheer and I should’ve been overjoyed like them but my mind was elsewhere.

What’s going on with him?

I land on the soft grass and am attacked by hugs from everyone around me.

After freshening up I’m met by a drunk Hermione who tells me about a party in the Gryffindor common room celebrating our win.

“Ron’s planned it and of course he’s invited the whole Slytherin team as well and practically the whole school come to think of it. Anyways you know I’m not one for parties or anything like this but the boys have already given me enough polyjuice potion than my water weight so I kind of want to be there.” she suddenly erupts into a mess of giggles and I hold her up as we enter the Gryffindor common room.

It’s flooded with people but a few stand out to me. Harry and Ginny are on the sofa with Ron coming in between them a few of my friends are in small bunches here and there and Cormac is staring straight at me with a drink in his hand and a stupid smirk on his face.

Ew.

Hermione shouts over the music that she was going to get another drink and I scan the room for anyone available that I could talk to so I could avoid Cormac, and my eyes land on a figure reading a book and having a smoke in the corner of the room.

This should be fun.

Harry Potter characters that I like

In response to a Romione fan who thought I hated every HP character and hated everything about the series because I don't stan certain characters and ships, I want to mention here the few characters I like.

For me, I like a character usually if:

they have an interesting personality and background

I feel sorry for how they are generally misunderstood or bashed by fandom (sometimes I take great pleasure in being a contrarian haha) or treated by the author.

their wins feel earned in the narrative and I feel inspired

So here is my list!

Draco Malfoy + Malfoy family

I love Draco so much. I admit that I was drawn in mostly through fanon but as I explored the books more, I really enjoyed his book character a lot. He has a vibrant and entertaining personality and I like how meta he can be sometimes. Every time he proclaims how bad Hagrid is as a teacher or how Hogwarts sucks as a school, I just want to hug him so badly. I also like his parents and their interactions as a family later in the books. Narcissa is my fav mom, no contest. I just think that JKR wasted his potential. Draco is the most developed Slytherin kid and his character should have represented hope for a better future. But of course, JKR only cares about her lions (and Snape who she tried to retcon as a lion too lol) so screw Slytherins. And the NPC houses.

Black family

Gosh, I absolutely ADORE the Black family. The Black family is the most intriguing set of characters JKR ever wrote in HP. The Black family lore, the constellation theme, the dark history, the tragedy. Chef's kiss! Screw making a marauders' prequel!!! Give me a Black Family series! You shouldn't be surprised that Sirius Black is my favourite marauder. Compared to Sirius, James Potter is an utter bore.

Neville Longbottom

I often wish Neville was the chosen one instead of Harry. I think Neville's story is more tragic than Harry's. It must be torture to have your parents alive but practically dead. And Neville just feels more heroic to me. A lot of times, I hate Harry's hero's journey because JKR keeps letting Harry win due to deu ex Machina. It was nice seeing Neville gradually grow into the man he was at the end. And Neville's rage at Bellatrix just felt more visceral compared to Harry's with Moldy Voldy. I just like Neville, he's so sweet and he deserves better friends.

Percy Weasley

On the surface, I don't care much about Percy but I do feel sorry for him. Ron and the twins treated him like trash. His family just had a hate boner for him. Poor Percy. I can vibe with a family black sheep character. I don't like how people paint him as the bad guy for walking out on his family. And I appreciate how distinguished he is as a Weasley. He is the only Weasley member not to bow down and kiss Dumbles' backside like a brainless puppet. It's a shame it backfired on him but I admire his logic.

Luna Lovegood

To be honest, Luna was a nothing character to me until I began reading Druna fanfiction and I realized how adorable her character is in the books. She makes me smile and I like how she used to talk back to the trio in the beginning. So funny when Luna told Harry that people thought Hagrid was a bad teacher lol! I think Luna is the only HP girl I like...also maybe because I really like picturing her with Draco. No shame!

Severus Snape

What a beautiful and tragic character. Like Draco, Snape is such a pleasure to read. The man is pure entertainment in written form. I don't love Snape the way I do Draco, but I like picturing him with a better life. 'Snape drops out of Hogwarts' is one of my favourite AO3 tags. I love how he dedicated his life to good even though life was cruel to him and gave him a bad hand. Everything about Snape is so intriguing and I like learning more about him. Definitely one of JKR's best characters.

Ron Weasley

I hate the golden trio but I find Ron the most tolerable and the most interesting. It's a shame I found myself disliking the guy in the epilogue. People complain about the movies ruining Ron but JKR was ruining Ron in the books too. Ron started out as so intelligent but gradually JKR made him slobbier and dumber. I like how Ron was the common sense guy. Once again, Ron had to be the one to tell Harry what a complete trash disaster Hagrid was. Lord, I hate that man! Shame Hagrid's spiders didn't kill him!!! I wish JKR expanded on Ron's chess ability. Ron showed promise as being a leader of the trio (Lord knows Harry was a disaster) and Ron being strategic would fit with his chess skills...but JKR never followed through. My fellow HP critic, chicory, mentioned this passage:

‘Hmm,’ said a small voice in his ear. ‘Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes – and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting … So where shall I put you?’

applies more to Ron than Harry and I have to agree with her.

There are also several instances of Ron just being a sweet friend to Harry and Hermione and I wish he had better friends. I don't care what Romione/Hermione fans say. Hermione does not deserve a guy like Ron. Never did and never will. I don't even think Harry deserves Ron either. Ron does so much more for Harry than Harry ever did for him. I would have preferred if the Luna friendship was developed more for Ron. Ron has his infuriating moments but his great moments offset them. Out of the trio, I think Ron is the best character and sometimes I wish he was the protag instead of Harry.

Well, let me end it at 7, the perfect number! I can't fully word why I like or love some of these characters but this is a gist.

Of course, there may be other characters that I enjoy for what they are in the story (the Death Eaters, Dumbledore etc) but I don't care about them enough to mention them. Blessings!

HP thoughts and headcanons

I just read again the whole HP series and I've fallen into my HP phase

Firstly I started thinking about one line Dumbledore has in the seventh book; the sorting is too early. I would love au, where the kids are sorted later, like in the fourth or fifth year. It would make the relationships between houses much better.

Some headcanons now:

I love to think that Ron and Neville are actually great friends. Like they both give me 'im insecure, but my friends can't be insecure' vibe. They would be safe person to each other.

Okay, I know this is controversial, but I think that Molly is a bad mother to some of her children. Not all of them but some of them. I understand that Harry needs a motherly figure, but she treats him better than Ron, Fred and George. Like these three are just so overlooked by her.

Most of these headcanons are about Ron, bcs he deserves the world, and I won't stand any ron weasley bashing. He loves cooking, especially baking. Like he would give his friends some baked goods as presents bcs he could not afford to buy presents. He would be really nervous about it, but his friends would love the treats. I also see him opening a bakery in the future bcs tbh he isn't auror material.

Also, I love good brother Percy. He has a specific way of supporting his brothers, but he would stand with them against the world.

One last thing, in deathly hallows, none of the Slytherins stayed for the battle, and I think that's bullshit. Just because Harry thinks every Slytherin is bad, it doesn't mean all of them are bad. Some of them would stay. Like in the same book, Harry tells his son that it's okay to be Slytherin, and it doesn't mean he is bad. A few chapters back, he called all the Slytherins cowards. I hate this. Some of them would stay. Fight me on this.

sex/gender/death are in an exclusive triad over here, but what i most appreciate you drawing out here is the principle of charity in writing [also the subject of this meta: fandom is like medicine].

I've seen a lot of posts from villain-enjoyers recently taking against the idea of redemption. and i do get this - there's been such a move in many fandom spaces against any sort of moral complexity in characterisation that i understand the impulse to say fuck it, and enjoy your favourite horrible people as horrible people.

but i do also think that this rejection of theme of redemption often misunderstands the reading that we all owe our blorbos. i think there's a tendency to believe that redemption would require some sort of damascene extraordinariness which would result in the character in question becoming neutered - perfect and soft and lacking the bite which led to us becoming interested in them in the first place.

but not so. redemption can be small, ordinary. it can be accidental. it can sneak up on you. it can exist in some areas of your lives and not others. sometimes little chips of redemption are gradually carved by bringing the man whose parents you murdered cups of tea - and maybe that's not enough to redeem you fully, and maybe it shouldn't be, but it's something - and by him being charitable enough to understand what happened in your life which led you down the path of evil.

one of the real issues with the harry potter fandom [and this is why i am so frequently on my soapbox about how we need to think about the narrative conventions of the series, and how it wants us to do this and how we should work against it] is that far too many people involved in it find themselves on sides. maybe they identify as gryffindors, and therefore fail to offer any of the other houses the nuance they extend to their favourite characters. maybe they think the villains get a bad showing in the series, so they bash the heroes. maybe they loathe a specific character, or ship, or subfandom, and so they dismiss anyone who writes within those confines.

but this is an error. every single character - just like every single person alive - can be interesting and worthy of exploration and worthy of the chance to transcend their canon [and fanon - catch me defending molly weasley against both sirius and percy nation like it's my paid employment] evils if we just give them the chance.

and i'm not just saying this because i have been recently forced to become fascinated by rodolphus lestrange...

i hadn't deeped before now that the 'lord voldemort enjoys watching himself get fucked in a mirror' thing had turned up in more than one piece... and all i have to say is...

some fics i've liked lately

it's been a weird year. when i made this list of recs back in january i fully intended it to become a monthly thing, but life happened and then i guess it just kept happening. in early 2023 things were ramping up in my new career, i was practicing and playing a lot with my band to prepare for our first show, i was settling into dealing with depression and anxiety with medication, i was getting over a miserable breakup. then i fell in love. i lost my job (the best and most favourite job i've ever had) abruptly this past may. this is my longest period of unemployment since i was a teenager and while you think it would be the best time to lose yourself in fandom, i felt the opposite. fandom was such a lifeline to me when i had a miserable job and was in a bad relationship and needed an escape but i was very present in my own life this summer. i took my partner to visit my family and spent a lot of time with friends and played shows (and recorded some music... shameless self promo once again) and in between i watched so much star trek on my couch. this is such a long preamble to explain why i haven't been fandoming as much lately and why idk if i'll write anything again anytime soon (let's say, once i have a job i want to procrastinate at) but -- i HAVE been reading fic! not as much as before, but i have been, and there's enough for a fic rest list so that's what i'm giving you today. when times are dire [podfic] - @aibidil

drarry. i have such a soft spot for middle aged draco and harry falling in love, the relationships they have with their friends and their grown children. @aibidil reads her own podfics and it's an utter delight. i usually only listen to podfics or audiobooks when i'm doing work around the house but i can going on walks with my headphones just so i could listen to more of this one.

romione. i was so so honoured to see this pop up in my ao3 gifts during @thethreebroomsticksfic pride fest this year. it turns the well tread romione ground of shell cottage and the yule ball over a bit, using them as settings to explore a confusing mix of jealousy and sexuality for ron and hermione. ashes knows i love mess with these and it captures that teenage chaos wonderfully, then lets them laugh at it as secure and settled adults.

gen. warning that this is a tearjerker, especially if you've ever loved and lost a pet. i think the pure and simple expressions of love and gratitude from crook's pov here would be a comfort to any pet owner.

at some point this year, i got REALLY into the idea of a one-sided dramione. it's hard to look for, especially since it's such a popular ship but i managed to find a few that scratched the itch until i find the time and/or motivation to write one of my own new years eve by 2daughtersofathena, the guardian angel by mylifebelongstothebbc, and a boy of hans by elixirsoflife. the last one being my personal favourite, a grim take on the hanahaki disease trope.

this was recced by @whinlatter in @thethreebroomsticksfic discord (btw i feel like no one on my followers lists needs anyone to remind them to read beasts -- but please read beasts) and when i saw "gillian flynn treatment" in the tags i slammed the mark for later button. this is probably the most balanced and realistic portrayals of molly weasley and her role as a mother that i've ever read in hp fic. it's not weasley family fluff but it doesn't devolve into something so flat as bashing either. molly is regular mother with flaws and strengths like anyone else and how they amplify and shift with love and grief and pain and stress and duty and pressure. every single relationship she has with her children is uniquely expressed and the way it ties the past to the direct aftermath of the war is so well done and a great way to organize this giant, messy family. particular care here went into fred and george, giving them their own identities in a way that can be difficult, given the source material. a favourite line:

“Probably have tried to make us name the twins after them.” He stopped laughing, sucked in a breath. “Do you want to?” For a second she considered it. It would be wonderful, getting to use those names again like living things. But - “No,” she said. “I - if they were alive, I’d have said no, so I’m saying it now. Let the boys be their own people.” The truth was that she didn’t want to lose her brothers. To have their faces erased in her memory, painted over with her sons. To have to say no, not THAT Fab, I mean UNCLE Fab - he died before you were born. Anyway, she liked the names Fred and George. It was easier like this.

another fic i've meant to read for ages and finally got around to just yesterday. the background drama of these side characters as a cheap scrunchie from boots floats around them is so perfectly teenage. reminds me of the other series i loved as a teenager around the time HP was coming out: georgia nicolson and gossip girl. i could also compare it to derry girls a little, how despite the environment surrounding them these girls are still being girls, arguing about stupid things and getting crushes on boys and having the absolute most ridiculous blowout fights with your sister (parvati and padma's portrayal here is probably my favourite i've ever read!)

i also can't leave without reccing @saintsenara's wip, one year in every ten. i can't get enough of a good case fic. tomarry/harrymort (both versions of this ship, oddly, apply to this fic) is not something i've ever sought out but i really think the way it's handled here could win over any non-believer. it's sharp and funny in a way that makes it turns into poignancy hit even harder. i screenshotted two full phone screen pages of chapter 27 so i could go back and read them over and over. it might be one of the best things i've ever read from ron's POV (emphasis mine):

It had been a long ten years, with a chair at their table always left empty and a hole in their hearts always unfilled. Grief was exhausting and boring and dully painful, like a slightly sprained ankle which you can still walk on, but which always bothers you a little bit. But there had been love among the grief. There had been love before the grief - indeed love had caused the grief - and there had been love after. His love for his parents and his siblings had changed, the way wine left in a barrel changes and becomes richer and deeper. There was more sorrow in the love, as he threw a quaffle around with George and saw the tired lines at the corner of his eyes. There was more recrimination, more struggle with the mistakes they had all made in the past, as he finally sat down and had a real chat with mum and dad about how a lifetime of corned-beef sandwiches and maroon jumpers had made him feel. But there was more joy there too. And with joy came forgiveness and understanding and hope and fun.
