Over Tea
A sudden chill sweeps through Gotham, almost like Mr. Freeze had just attacked only thing was the man was currently locked away in Arkham, and was felt by all. And talked by all via word of mouth and on social media as well.
The clouds and smog that covered their dark city shifted and swirled, a rumble beginning deep inside them as the weather turned from smoggy to rain and thunder with no real warning. The strangest thing was the green glow that could be seen when thunder rumbled inside the gray clouds.
Then like a candle being blown out, the rumbling stopped, the rain ended, and the clouds parted all over Gotham.
For the first time in a while Gotham had a clear sky and it felt... it felt like something heavy had been lifted off the city.
It was this sudden shift and the all felt chill that had set off alerts for Batman and his family. Since early morning since the first change and shift happened he was in front of the Batcomputer trying to narrow down where it started.
After hours of searching with the help of Red Robin, Oracle and strangely enough Red Hood, they managed to narrow down where the odd power had been coming from.
Was still coming from, only very low.
The old and abandoned observatory tower.
-x-x-
"More ecto-tea Lady Gotham?" Danny asked, his hand waving towards the steaming pot nearby.
The woman smiled lightly, her dark painted lips curling up to show her sharp fangs for a moment before saying "No but thank you Young Kingling though I would like more cookies if you don't mind. Now where were we?"
Danny nodded towards her and signaled towards a maid skeleton ghost who walked forward with a tray of cookies. The maid swiftly placed a few more cookies on the spirit embodiment of Gotham plate before bowing and stepping away.
"We were just about to discuss the sentience of the Court of Owls." Danny said as he lightly tapped the large almost mountain of paperwork on the table they were sitting at, floating high above the floor as shooting stars and planets drifted around them. Many ghosts floated around as well, servants that had sworn their loyalty to the Young King, and were preparing things like snacks and drinks for two powerful beings in the room as they discussed business. Nearby doors and windows though were ghostly knights that stood tall and alert, making sure no interlopers interrupted the meeting taking place and ready to defend not only Lady Gotham but their King.
"Ah yes them." Lady Gotham grimaced as she took a drink of her ecto-tea. "That will take some time for us to discuss, they've been running around unchecked for to long and even with my limited abilities to hinder them has been less than ideal."
"You, Lady G, were deeply cursed for many, many years and I just broke most of it." Danny cut in quickly, he was not about to let this wonderful and powerful city spirit blame herself for something out of her hands "Due to said curse you couldn't do much so please don't go blaming yourself. Its mostly broken now, so you can freely start healing yourself and your city self now that jerk demon that cursed you is in Walker's prison for his crimes."
Lady Gotham grew silent for a moment, her dark eyes staring deeply at the young King but then warmly smiled, well as warm as she could seeing how she was Gotham itself. "You reminded me of my Knight, Young King, treating me like this. Not afraid to point out the truth and facts."
Danny gave a light laugh as he took a hold of one of the cookies on his plate and gave a bite "I'll take that as a compliment Lady Gotham. Now about those Court of Owls...."

I'm a Grandpa? Again?!
My brain got away from me. srry
This might be a horrible, horrible idea that will have so many butterfly and directs effects on the DC canon that I know nothing about but...
Consider this: Bruce is Danny's clone/test-tube baby.
Danny has lived for many, many years and somewhere along the lines, he got his DNA stolen again (in his human form mind you) by someone and they made a clone/baby (most likely cause the child would destabilise without more DNA. Human Danny is just 1/3 of the DNA he has). Maybe the League and Ra's is responsible. Maybe some other party I have no knowledge about. Maybe it was GIW. But it happens.
Anyway, whoever succeeded, had some intentions with the clone if it had powers. He did not. Was a failure and was dumped as a 3yo in Gotham. Tom and Martha Wayne found him and adopted the child.
Now, Danny doesn't know it. He just goes around, living his best life with his partner/(s), works somewhere new every 5-6 years or so, trying out new professions when he wants. When his DNA got yonked, he was a practicing cook. By the time Batman is old enough with all his kids he is a doctor or something.
Let's throw in the Ghost King for fun. Love the trope. Could be just him being a super strong and respected Ghost in the Realms who helps himself to Pariah's treasury. Not like the guy needed it anyway.
So, YEARS pass. All parties are unaware. Meta human protection happens. Ecto Acts get ruled out automatically by the Government somewhere in a list of all stuff that change. The Ghosts haven't been sighted for over 30 years. The Government disbanded GIW wven esrlier just cause they were a moneh draining leach. The JL didn't even pay that much attention honestly (let's say Batman wasn't there for some reason to check the final copy), just one more thing that changed for the better in their eyes.
So, Danny and his kind are now legally in the clear. Does he so something with it? Well, not much. Just uses his powers more freely. His rogues don't find the Living Realm all that interesting now and just come to Phantom to play. Except Sculker. That ass is still unbearable.
...
I got sidetracked from my original idea. Anyway-
...
Damian in school has to do the ancestory assignment. And finds out that he has a weird relation to this Random DudeTM. (Maybe Tom's and Martha's DNA was indeed used in the process of creation. Who knows, maybe it was their doing all along in the name of Doctor Science. Idk. All options are fun) Came out of nowhere. The relation is unclear too.
That gets brought up to Father. Father is surprised. Investigation happens.
The Bats are flabbergasted by the results.
Danny gets the news that he is a surprise Granpa again (Dani was the first one to come with a grandchild out of nowhere. Adopted. You know what? Let it be Cass. Let her have a traveling super mom).

Things to Do that Aren't Related to Growing Plants
This is my second post in a series I’ll be making on how to increase biodiversity on a budget! I’m not an expert--just an enthusiast--but I hope something you find here helps!
Some of us just don’t have much luck when it comes to growing plants. Some of us simply want to aim for other ways to help that don’t involve putting on gardening gloves. Maybe you've already got a garden, but you want to do more. No problem! There’s a couple of options you can look into that’ll help attract wildlife in your area without even having to bring out any shovels!
Provide a Water Source
Tumblr media
Oftentimes when I see ‘add a water source’ in informational articles about improving your backyard for wildlife, it’s almost always followed by an image of a gorgeous backyard pond with a waterfall and rock lining that looks expensive to set up, difficult to maintain, and overall just… not feasible for me. Arguably, not feasible for a lot of people. And that’s okay! There’s still ways to add water in your garden for all kinds of creatures to enjoy!
There’s tons of ways to create watering stations for insects like bees and butterflies. A self refilling dog bowl can work wonders! Add some stones into the receiving tray for insects to land on or use to climb out, and you’ve got a wonderful drinking spot for all kinds of insects! You can also fill a saucer or other dish with small stones and fill it, though it’ll likely need refilling daily or even several times a day during hot times.
Tumblr media
I've seen people online use all kinds of things to make water features. Some go with terra-cotta pots, pebbles, and a cheap pump to get a small and simple fountain. Others use old tires, clay, and a hole in the ground to create an in-ground mini pond system. If all else fails, even a bucket or watertight box with a few plants in it can do the trick--though do be wary of mosquitoes if the water isn’t moving. In situations like these, a solar-powered fountain pump or bubbler are great for keeping the water moving while still making it a drinking option for wildlife (it not even more appealing for some)--and these items can be obtained fairly cheap online!
Tumblr media
Bird baths are an option as well--a classic way to provide for birds in your area, they can be easy to find online or in a gardening store! The only downside is that a good, quality bird bath can be pricey up-front. However, a nice stone bird bath should last a long time, be easy to clean and refill, and be enjoyed by many birds! I’ve also seen tutorials on how to make your own with quickcrete! Bird baths will be a welcome sight to birds, as they provide a space for them to drink and bathe to regulate the oils in their feathers for flight and insulation. Putting a stone in the middle will also help insects to escape if they fall in, and provide a place to perch so they can get their own drink. You’ll want to change the water and clean the baths regularly--as often as once a week, if you can manage it.
If possible, it’s highly encouraged to fill and refill water features with rainwater instead of tap water. Tap water is often treated, so instead of using hoses or indoor kitchen water, collecting some rainwater is a great alternative. Collecting rainwater can be as simple as leaving cups, bins, or pots outside for awhile.
Butterflies and other creatures will also drink from mud puddles. If you can maintain an area of damp soil mixed with a small amount of salt or wood ash, this can be fantastic for them! Some plants also excel at storing water within their leaves and flowers (bromeliads come to mind), making them an excellent habitat for amphibians as well as a drinking spot for insects and birds.
Bird Feeders and Bird Houses
Tumblr media
Some of the fancy, decorated bird feeders are expensive, but others can be pretty low-cost--I got my bird feeder from Lowe’s for around 10 dollars, and a big bag of birdseed was around another 10 dollars and has lasted several refills! If you don’t mind occasionally buying more birdseed, a single birdfeeder can do a lot to attract and support local birds! If you’re handy, have some spare wood, and have or can borrow some tools, you may even be able to find instructions online to make your own feeder. You may not even need wood to do so! Even hummingbird feeders, I’ve found, are quick to attract them, as long as you keep them stocked up on fresh sugar water in the spring and summer!
An important note with bird feeders is that you have to make sure you can clean them regularly. Otherwise, they may become a vector for disease, and we want to avoid causing harm whenever possible. Also keep an ear out and track if there’s known outbreaks of bird diseases in your area. If local birding societies and scientists are advising you take your birdfeeders down for awhile, by all means, do it!
Tumblr media
Bird houses are naturally paired with bird feeders as biodiversity promoters for backyard spaces, and it makes sense. Having bird houses suited to birds in your area promotes them to breed, raise their young, disperse seeds, and generally engage in your surrounding environment. Setting them up takes careful selection or construction, preparation, and some patience, but sooner or later you might get some little homemakers! Keep in mind, you will need to clean your birdhouses at least once a year (if not once per brood) to make sure they’re ready and safe for birds year after year--you wouldn’t want to promote disease and parasites, after all. But they could be a valuable option for your landscape, whether you purchase one or construct your own!
Again, do make sure you're putting up the right kind of boxes for the right kinds of birds. Bluebird boxes are some I see sold most commonly, but in my area I believe they're not even all that common--a nesting box for cardinals or chickadees would be far more likely to see success here! And some birds don't even nest in boxes--robins and some other birds are more likely to use a nesting shelf, instead! Research what birds live in your area, take note of any you see around already, and pick a few target species to make homes for!
Solitary Bee Houses
Tumblr media
A bee house or bee hotel is a fantastic way to support the solitary bees in your area! For a few dollars and some annual cleaning, you can buy a solitary bee house from most big box nurseries. Alternatively, you can make one at home, with an array of materials you may already have lying around! You can even make them so that they’ll benefit all kinds of insects, and not necessarily just bees.
Though you don’t even necessarily have to break out the hammer and nails, buy a ton of bricks, or borrow a staple gun. Making homes for tunneling bees can be as simple as drilling holes in a log and erecting it, or drilling holes in stumps and dead trees on your property. You might even attract some woodpeckers by doing this!
Providing Nesting Area
Tumblr media
There are tons of different kinds of bees, and they all make different kinds of homes for themselves. Not all of them make big cavity hives like honey bees, or will utilize a solitary bee house. Bumblebees live in social hives underground, particularly in abandoned holes made by rodents--some others nest in abandoned bird nests, or cavities like hollow logs, spaces between rocks, compost piles, or unoccupied birdhouses. Borer, Ground, and Miner bees dig into bare, dry soil to create their nests. Sparsely-vegetated patches of soil in well-drained areas are great places to find them making their nests, so providing a similar habitat somewhere in the garden can encourage them to come! I do talk later in this document about mulching bare soil in a garden--however, leaving soil in sunny areas and south-facing slopes bare provides optimal ground nesting habitat. Some species prefer to nest at the base of plants, or loose sandy soil, or smooth-packed and flat bare ground. They’ve also been known to take advantage of soil piles, knocked over tree roots, wheel ruts in farm roads, baseball diamonds and golf course sand traps. You can create nesting ground by digging ditches or creating nesting mounds in well-drained, open, sunny areas with sandy or silty soil. However, artificially constructed ground nests may only have limited success.
Providing Alternative Pollinator Foods
Tumblr media
Nectar and pollen aren’t the only foods sought out by some pollinators! Some species of butterflies are known to flock to overripe fruit or honey water, so setting these out can be an excellent way to provide food to wildlife. You may want to be cautious about how you set these out, otherwise it can help other wildlife, like ants or raccoons. Butterflies may also drop by to visit a sponge in a dish of lightly salted water.
Bat Houses and Boxes
Tumblr media
Big or small, whether they support five bats or five hundred, making bat boxes and supporting local bats is a great way to boost biodiversity! Not only will they eat mosquitoes and other pest species, but you may also be able to use the guano (bat droppings) as fertilizer! Do be careful if you choose to do that though--I’ve never had the opportunity to, so do some research into how strong it is and use it accordingly.
Provide Passageway Points
Tumblr media
If you want your area to be more accessible for creatures that can’t fly or climb fences, allowing or creating access points can be an excellent way to give them a way in and out. Holes in the bottom of walls or fences can be sheltered with plants to allow animals through.
In a somewhat similar manner, if you’re adding a water fixture, it’s important to provide animals a way to get into and out of the pond--no way in, and they can’t use the water. No way out, and they may drown. Creating a naturalistic ramp out of wood beams or sticks, or stepped platforms out of bricks, stones, or logs can do the trick.
Get or Keep Logs and Brush Piles
Tumblr media
I’ve already mentioned logs a good handful of times so far in this post. To be used as access ramps, or as nesting areas for solitary bees. But they have value as much more than that! Logs on the ground provide shelter for all kinds of animals, especially depending on size--anything from mice, reptiles, and amphibians to things like turkey vultures and bears will use fallen logs as shelter. Inside of a decaying log, there’s a lot of humidity, so amphibians are big fans of them--meanwhile, the upper sides of them can be used as sunning platforms by things like lizards. Other animals can also use the insides of logs as nest sites and hiding places from predators too big to fit inside. Fungi, spiders, beetles, termites, ants, grubs, worms, snails, slugs, and likely much more can be found inside rotting logs, using the rotting wood as food sources or nesting places. They can then provide food for mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. They can also be regarded as a landmark or territory marker as wildlife get more familiar with your space.
So how do you get logs for cheap? Try Chip Drop! I talk about them more in a future post, but you can mark saying that you’d like logs in your drop, so they’ll give you any they have! In fact, you may even get a drop faster if you're willing to accept some logs. You may also be able to approach arborists you see working in your area and ask for logs. There may also be local online listings for people selling logs for cheap, or just trying to get rid of them. If there’s land development going on near you, you may be able to snag logs from trees they cut down to make space. Do keep in mind, you don’t need to have huge gigantic logs laying around your property to make an impact--even small logs can help a lot.
Tumblr media
If possible, creating and leaving brush piles on the edge of your property can be a great boost to biodiversity--even if you may not see the wildlife using it. They’ll provide shelter from weather and predators, and lower portions are cool and shady for creatures to avoid the hot sun. The upper layers can be used as perch sites and nest sites for song birds, while lower layers are resting sites for amphibians and reptiles, and escape sites for many mammals. As the material decays, they also attract insects, and as such they’ll attract insect-eating animals too. As more small animals find refuse in your brush pile, their predators will be attracted to them as well. Owls, hawks, foxes, and coyotes are known to visit brush piles to hunt. Making a brush pile can be as simple as piling branches and leaves into a mound, as big or as small as you want. You can even use tree stumps or old fence posts near the base, and keep stacking on plant trimmings and fallen branches. Do note that you don’t want to do this near anything like a fire pit.
Don't forget, with all of these, your mileage may vary for any variation of reasons, so don't worry if you can't take all of even any of these actions! Even just talking about them with other people may inspire someone else to put out a bat box, or leave a few logs out for wildlife!
That's the end of this post! My next post is gonna be about ways to get seeds and plants as cheaply as possible. For now, I hope this advice helps! Feel free to reply with any questions, success stories, or anything you think I may have forgotten to add in!

(Don't know if this was asked already but)
What are the Titan's first reaction to Dick calling to them in owl hoots?
And what's their reaction to Batman answering Dick the same way?
At first he wouldn’t make any birds sounds around them at all, opting to wear contacts and talk as little as possible.
The first time they witness the bird sounds would probably be in response to Robin hijacking the comms after Dick didn’t check in with him at the alotted time, suddenly Nightwing is just standing off to the side, hooting and chirping softly in the the comms.
The titans are definitely confused because??? They thought Nightwing was human???? But apparently the name means something after all so whatever. If they can have an alien on the team then a bird-man-whatever is nothing. And Dick, upon seeing that they really don’t care at all, starts making bird sounds more frequently around them. And the Titans likewise learn to interpret some of the sounds (“look!” Is a sharp hoot, “stop!” a chittering hiss, and “nice-move-but-I’m-going-to-show-you-where-it-really-hurts-now” is an amused little chirrup).
The real surprise is Batman and Robin responding to Nightwing with the same sort of bird sounds and it takes them a good moment to realize that—- yep, “tall-dark-and-scary” just hooted at him like an owl. And now, apparently he’s not mocking him because Nightwing appears very happy about it and Robin also makes those weird little cheeps and trills that genuinely don’t sound like they should be coming from a human throat at all and—-
Yep, now Nightwing is??? Cuddling Robin???? Is that a thing?????? And making the softest bird noises yet?????? (One of the Titans definitely tries approaching them but the dead stare Dick gives them makes them backtrack very quickly. The message is clear: no approaching Robin.)
((Jason meanwhile jabs Dick in the ribs hard and pointedly makes his way over to the Titans to cheerfully say hello and let them know that if anything happens to Nightwing on their watch, he’s going to become their worst nightmare. The Titans are reluctantly impressed but also very much aware that Nightwing is still giving them that eerily blank stare that promises a world of pain if anybody even thinks about harming a hair on Robin’s head. Like they ever would. Batman’s wrath alone wouldn’t be worth it, but now they’re starting to see that Nightwing might be even scarier than him.
Wally eventually takes one for the team and introduces himself to Jason, offering to share some silly stories about Nightwing from their last mission and eat ice cream. The speedster is the first Titan to get his individual bird call.))
The Titans obviously aren’t going to question Batman hooting at Nightwing (no way, they value their skeletal integrity thank you very much) but that day, many wild rumors and speculations about Batman are born, some them gaining enough attention that JLA hear of them.
None of them want to ask, but the running bet is either that the Batfamily are all metas with bird characteristics (“It explains how they can stomach swinging through the city like that Roy! They’re meant to have wings, but now they have to compensate!”), or that they’re secretly some kind of eldritch entities that embody all the weirdness of Gotham City (“No Donna, think about it, it makes sense! Remember all those random owl statues and carvings around the city? They’re literally an embodiment of that cursed place!”)

So I like the concept/headcanon of “shades.” Which if you don’t know, is the idea that’s there’s a type of ghost that’s kinda like a blob ghost and they’re weak little globs of ectoplasm that are formed from strong emotions and hang around the human world, usually harmlessly.
And I was thinking about that with Batman crossovers.
Bruce is traumatized. He’s definitely got a shade or two following him around. Wayne manor is probably a playground for them.
So what if there was one that formed back when he lost his parents. The trauma that’s at the core of all his other trauma.
And it stayed with him all these years, growing with him and being fed and shaped by his emotions.
The day Danny meets Bruce Wayne, he sees it immediately.
It’s one of the strongest shades he’s ever seen. It’s still weak compared to him of course, because it’s still just a shade. An entity that’s dependent on the emotions feeding it to exist, and mostly undetectable by ghost hunting equipment. But it’s still exceptionally strong for a shade.
It looks just like the Batman, except it’s glaringly not human. A big, black, looming shadow, its body a featureless silhouette with blank, glowing white eyes. Long tendrils curling up at the ends of the cape. Gliding about with fluid motions and able to twist and stretch its wispy form how it sees fit.
It's like the version of the Bat imagined in the stories told of him. Less of a real human being and more of a larger-than-life tale.
It likes to take the place of Bruce’s shadow. It moves with him wherever he goes, only sometimes peeling itself off the walls and floor to peer around its host’s shoulders.
Danny can’t take his eyes off it.
Bruce wonders why this kid keeps staring at the empty space behind him.
The night Danny encounters Batman, he thinks Bruce’s shade wandered off on its own.
Then he gets a closer look. It’s not the shade, it’s a man enveloped by the shade, wearing it like a cloak. Or a suit.
As soon as Danny realizes that, Bruce’s secret identity is compromised.
(He doesn’t say a word to Bruce. Even the next time he meets Bruce in the daylight and the shade is back in its place, posing as his shadow.)
People tell stories about Batman. How he melts into the shadows like he is one. How he moves more silently than a human should be able to. How his glare has a force behind it. How maybe he’s some kind of meta, or even a ghost.
The rumors have a shred of truth to them. But he isn’t a meta or a ghost, just a man wrapped in his own shadow.
Anyway just... Bruce unknowingly has a shade buddy as his sidekick and reflection of his mental state and it gives him subtle shadow manipulation and fear-inducing powers AU.

Jason and the bats had just saved a bunch of kids for traffickers but Jaso could not find his kid, he was getting ready to make an excuse so he can go and summon Danny when Nightwing came up to him had said that he had a kid that wanted to talk to Red Hood. He ask where was the kid and Nightwing pointed over to where the kid was sitting, he told Nightwing that he would talk to her. After he saw Nightwing leave Jason walk over and hug his daughter and told her they were leaving, he pick her up and started to grapple to his motorcycle. When he heard the others start to yell at him he told them he would explain later after getting home and putting her to bed, he sat down and tried to figure out how to explain he had knocked up the ghost king

random inquiry....im wondering how asmos wings work
like how do they flap, do they kinda move like the average birds or more like a butterflys?? maybe a beetle? a bats???
theyre kinda small and dont seem to have the joints a birds would so im thinking butterfly/bats.... however, though they give bat, they look more like a stylized version of a bats wings but not with the same mobility so leaning way more towards butterfly...or humming bird perhaps?? like i feel like theyre supposed to be moving faster than a butterflies consider the wing to body ratio....but the position fits more of a butterflies?? or maybe a dragonflies since he has four separate wings?? dragonflies top and bottom wings dont really flap at the same time hmmm
beels moves like a beetle (cause fly wings)
tbh the thought of hearing beels wings buzzing at such a loud volume makes me want to scream lol
lucifer would be like the birds...there would be so much wind due to them haha
mammons would move like a bats obviously but his wings are kinda positioned in a peculiar way, so i cant picture how hed look flying in my mind 🤔
im only really stuck on the specifics of how mammon would balance and stuff,,,,i feel like his wings hang down when resting but he can change the position if he wants...so they could perhaps go up to usual upper position when flying?

I like Tim having a bird themed name because Tim idolized Robin, not Batman. He looked up to Batman too, but Dick Grayson was his hero. Especially since Bruce was kind of a hot mess at first, so Tim never really had the hero worship like he did with Nightwing. So Tim having a bird themed name, a bird themed symbol on his chest, just makes sense.
My two favorite ideas for Tim’s new hero name are either Crow or Cardinal.

Helena Bertinelli/Dick Grayson Role Swap AU
I know I said I didn’t actually want to think about the hypothetical Helena Bertinelli Dick Grayson role swap au, but it turned out I lied and actually I do have a lot of thoughts on it. I still feel like making Bruce Helena’s actual father could go really wrong really easily, but there’s a lot that’s really interesting about her being the first Robin.
Batman is a few years into his crusade and fighting a war on the mobs of Gotham when the Bertinelli massacre takes place.
He is in the middle of an aggressive campaign of surveillance when, perched on a distant rooftop, he watches through the living room window as a masked man bursts in through the door and rains down a hail of bullets.
It’s over as soon as it began, but Bruce could even think of helping.
Batman descends down into the room and finds that it’s not completely filled with the dead. There is a single survivor — a little girl, trembling and quietly crying — curled up next to her mother’s dead body, her dress stained with her mother’s blood.
He picks her up off the ground, wraps her in his cape, and makes a promise that he will bring to justice whoever did this.
(He would’ve gone after the masked man anyway, to understand the disruption in the mafia’s status quo if nothing else, but now it weighs more heavily on him with a promise made to a little girl, a girl who reminds him of himself.)
Helena remembers Batman sweeping her up. He blocked out the nightmare that surrounded her and it felt safe. That’s what stuck with her for the longest time, even when her actual relationship with Bruce began to devolve, that the Batman felt like safety.
Eventually the police come and Helena is put into the custody of her Uncle, Tomaso Passemote. As the city outside begins to devolve into all out war between the five families, Helena begins to have constant nightmares. She wanders the halls of her Uncle’s home when she can’t sleep.
One night, she overhears a conversation between her uncle and other man and she learns that he was the one who ordered her family’s massacre. SCared for her life, she runs away into Gotham to try and find Batman. Her Uncle’s men find her first.
(Meanwhile, Batman is investigating, but he has a lot on his plate what with the city on the verge of war.)
Helena was a sheltered child, but even then, even at her young age, she understood Omerta, that code of silence. You resolve things internally. You take blood for blood. That was the moral of the stories she was told as a child. The anecdotes and bragging of her father and uncles, the gruesome stories her older brother delighted in, the reassurances of her mother when she was frightened or hurt.
Helena is afraid, feels afraid all the time. She’s afraid that any day her uncle could come and finish what he started. She spends so much time being afraid that she comes out the other end and knows that she has to do something, anything, to make it stop.
So she takes that fear, her childlike, bone-deep understanding of omerta, and her brother's pocket knife and tries to be brave.
Batman finally finds her on the roof of Passemoto’s home, curled up outside her bedroom window.
“My uncle’s going to kill me,” she confesses to him. “So I need to kill him first.”
Batman is alarmed by this, but he manages to get the story from her and manages to convince her to wait.
They confront Passemoto together. He confesses to the truth. Helena tries to stab him. He attacks her back. Batman intervenes. By the time they’re separated, she’s stabbed him a couple of times (non-lethally). Batman strings up Passemoto for the police and holds Helena as she cries.
Bruce Wayne takes Helena Bertinelli in. It raises all sorts of rumors — about the ties between the Waynes and the mob, about illegitimate children, never mind that the dates don’t make sense — but he does trust anywhere else to keep her safe, and he’s grown attached.
Helen’a nightmares don’t stop with the arrest of her Uncle. They don’t stop until Bruce lets her in on the secret and teaches her how to defend herself.
She becomes Robin, dancing through the night at Batman’s side.
Helena is Bruce’s first child. She is the model, the prototype, the guinea pig for all that comes after. The standards were always the highest for her. On one level, she is certain that he never forgot where she came from, born in the blood and corruption of the mob, that he found her on a rooftop with a knife, ready to use it.
She has a deep empathy for the victims they interact with. It’s an empathy that manifests in anger at the people who harmed them. Batman is always getting on her for going too far, drawing too close to the line.
Helena is close to Dr Thomkins. While there are ideological differences between them, Leslie serves as a mother figure in her life. Neither Bruce nor Alfred, for all their extensive collective knowledge, have any idea how to handle a teenage girl going through puberty.
She joins the teen titans, forms deep friendships, saves the world a couple dozen times overs, has a couple teen relationships, and gets embroiled deeply in teen drama. Meanwhile, things between her and Bruce are growing more and more tense.
Helena is close friends with Kory. There something about the way the alien princess is so deeply in tune with her her emotions, the way she loves and feels and hates fully and without reserve. It’s a burning fire that simultaneously attracts and repulses. Hlena wants to be like Kory; she’s afraid of who’ll she’ll be if she is.
Things come to a head when Helena is seventeen and shot by the Joker. Batman fires her from Robin, kicks her out. She goes to metropolis and hears the story of Nightwing from Superman, leaves metropolis again.
She doesn’t go back to Gotham afterwards, doesn’t go back to the titans either. Instead she hitchhikes with no real destination in mind, trying to figure herself out.
She ends up in Chicago. Helena spends the last of her money to rent a crappy apartment, gets a job as a waitress, and starts to piece together a new identity for herself.
A side-note on costumes: the Robin costume she wore was practically the same except maybe with a little skirt. (We’re going with the canon that Bruce designed the identity.) The Nightwing costume she wears is more different since she designed it herself. I think it’s a cross between Nightwing’s modern blue and black costume and the black and purple Huntress costume — the one with pants. We’re keeping the cape and using purple rather than blue.
The first night she goes out as Nightwing, she makes the choice that Nightwing isn’t a hero who kills. It’s a choice she makes, not Batman.
Eventually, she rejoins the Titans and continues to have wild adventures and boatloads of young adult drama. She probably has a few costume changes, maybe tries out a silly midriff baring costume for a week, idk.
Meanwhile, Bruce has obtained another Robin, a boy named Jason who he actually adopts. (Helena was never adopted because millionaire playboy adopts pre-teen girl is just not a good look.)
The thing about Helena and Jason’s relationship is that it started off poorly and by the time they start to work past the way it began, it’s too late.
Helena didn’t have any warning before seeing the news in the paper and it’s hard for her to separate her conflict with Bruce from her feelings about him and their relationship..
Additionally, Jason reminds her very much of her younger self. She watches him with Bruce and she sees her childhood playing out again. She sees Bruce making all the same mistakes.
And then Jason dies and it’s, well, it’s hard.
But, let’s switch tracks. It’s time to look at Dick Grayson.
The flying Grayson’s Gotham performance does not got terribly wrong when Dick first flies through the air with them. He grows up at Haley’s, performing on the trapeze with parents across the globe.
They come back to Gotham for one final performance before Dick’s due to break up the act. He’s getting older, he wants to spread his own wings. He’s nearly an adult, he wants to finally give college a shot and stop dragging his feet before it’s too late.
The Gotham performance is very final. John and Mary fall to their deaths and Dick, the only survivor, the one who knows the truth of what happened — that it was the mob, not an accident — he goes on the run.
You meet all sorts of interesting people as a member of a traveling circus. Dick tracks down one such character who gives him a crossbow and teaches him to shoot, to track, to kill; how to refine his athletic prowess into something deadlier.
He calls himself the Huntsman and sets out to find the man who killed his parents.
Dick kills Zucco and stays in Gotham past that, continuing an uphill battle against the mob as he also begins to form a vigilante presence in Gotham.
This era comes to a close when an incident involving a gang with a backyard nuke leaves him with custody of a young kid named James who’s too smart for his own good. He retreats to Europe where he spends the next couple years with a circus.
Meanwhile, back in Gotham, Tim Drake has entered the scene! Idk how he knows their vigilante identities in this AU. Maybe Helena saved his life as a civilian when he was a little kid and he was convinced that she had to be Robin because she was awesome and Robin was awesome, and look, he was like 5, nobody expected him to actually be right.
Anyway, some form of A lonely Place of Dying happens and Tim becomes the third Robin.
Helena resents Tim at first. After all the drama of her and Jason’s Robin careers, here Batman finally has a Robin he doesn’t have to parent. He doesn’t need to tell Tim to be less violent. He never needs to worry that Tim’s going to kill someone. Tim’s from a nice family. Tim’s everything Batman wanted in a Robin and now he finally has it.
(it’s not as simple as that of course, but emotions aren’t always rational.)
She largely tries to avoid him.
Meanwhile, Dick Grayson has discovered that vigilantism is harder to quit than any drug and decides to return to Gotham. He, uh, leaves James with the circus where he’s been unofficially adopted by half the people there and where his mechanical inventions are really bringing in the crowds.
In Gotham, while a few less than stellar interactions with Batman lead him to deciding to relocate down the river to Bludhaven, before that happens he teams up with none other than Robin/Tim.
That’s right, it’s time for Robin III: Cry of the Huntsman.
Teaming up with Robin leads the kid to casually reveal that he knows Dick’s secret identity, and then, less casually, reveal that the reason he knows is that he used to go to Haley’s circus whenever it came to Gotham, including that final time.
So yeah, that’s apparently a thing. When Dick relocates to Bludhaven, Robin periodically shows up to keep bothering him. It’s a good thing he’s got a soft spot for kids.
Anyway, Bane shows up and Bruce gets his back broken. Blah blah blah, knightquest
Tim sneaks off to New York where the Titans are currently in the process of imploding to complain to Helena and off to bludhaven to complain to Dick, neither of which can do much to help. Dick is unwilling to get involved in all that batshit and Helena has her own problems and Bruce issues standing in the way.
But, before I forget, a brief tangent on Dick and killing. Part of a role swap au is figuring out what changes and what stays the same and I think in this AU, Dick and Helena end up in rather similar places in their opinions on killing. Helena chooses non lethal methods from a matter of personal code and choice, but she isn’t opposed to the idea of death as justice. Dick, after that first killing of his parent’s murderer, does not like to kill. He prefers and believes in justice in other ways. He does, however, accept that lethal force is a tool necessary to use on occasion, which is enough of a distinction to put him at odds with Batman.
(Though, saying that, Batman does treat him better than he does the Huntress in canon because sexism.)
But back to Knightfall. We get through Knightquest and Knightsend and stuff which brings us to the important part: Prodigal.
Helena never expected to be asked to be Batman, but it still stung that Bruce picked JPV and all his insanity of all people. When he asks her to fill in for him when he goes off to do whatever it is he goes off to do, she wonders just why he didn’t ask her the first time. Was it because she was a girl? Is it because he still doesn’t trust her? When she asks, he says it’s because she was living her own life, but she can’t quite believe him.
No one’s going to mistake Helena’s Bat for Batman, which changes some of the plot points of Prodigal, but not the important part of Tim and Helan bonding.
Tim grows on Helena throughout; she feels less resentment, more fondness. She can see the devotion he has to the ideas of the mantle and she sees that he can finally give Bruce what she could never and what Jason can no longer: an heir to the Bat.
Anyway, we’re going to skip ahead to No Man’s Land because I do have a brand. Dick and Helena don’t have a one night stand because I said so.
So, No Man’s Land. Dick is, wait, I left him in Bludhaven. Umm, he moves back to Gotham to help after the quake and decided to stay when No Man’s land was declared, and you know what? He’s entering his Batman era.
Dick looks at Gotham without Batman and decides, why not me?
You know what else dick is up to in No Man’s Land: Enemies to Lovers arc with Barbara Gordon.
When Barbara sees Dick as Batman, she’s initially hostile to him, but is convinced to enter into a grudging partnership with him. Proximity and the life and death stakes of No Man’s Land lead to the relationship between them becoming something deeper.
Of course, Batman shows up and throws a hissy fit and Dick goes back to being the Huntsman, but he keeps working with Oracle.
What’s Helena up to in this? Hmmm, she’s taking Batman’s place on the Justice League while he’s disappearing on his month’s long guilt trip and attending Tim’s parent teacher conference for him. Until she gets called into No Man’s Land that is.
I think that, due to the fact that they’re more similar in this AU, Dick and Helena get along much better. They have a certain respect for each other. So, when Helena shows up in No Man’s Land, I think there’s a fun trio dynamic with Helena, Dick, and Babs.
Anyway, when No Man’s Land ends. Barbara recruits her hot new boyfriend to join the Birds of Prey, a fact that Dinah gives her no end of shit for.
And I think that’s where I’m going to leave off for this one.
That was a lie, I need to go back to this idea of Tim as the heir to Batman.
Look, I respect a woman’s right to become Batman, but I also like engaging with canon on the level of what stupid decisions would DC make in this universe? So, this AU gets the theme of primogeniture, particularly of the eldest son variety.
In a way, Helena’s Batman arc in Prodigal serves to show that she cannot be Batman’s heir and to set up Tim as the true heir instead.
Throughout Tim's time as Robin, there is this throughline that Batman is pushing him to be more like him, to push him beyond Robin. Narratively, Tim is pushed up at the expense of Jason and Helena’s times as Robin. They were too violent, they were too emotional. Tim is like Bruce, caring when he needs to be, and analytic when it serves him better. His desire to one day return to ordinary life is portrayed as a flaw to be overcome. As for Tim, he views his future with a certain amount of trepidation while at the same time accepting its inevitability.
Tim Drake was introduced as this character with an innate understanding of what Batman and Robin mean. Him going from Robin to Batman is a natural extension of that.
It is with this subtext and history that we reach the Batman reborn era. The moral of the prodigal arc is that Helena can stand in for Batman, but not replace him. They need to maintain the illusion that Batman is the same as he always was. That much is clear to Tim, and so, he picks up the heavy weight of the legacy that’s been prepared for him.
Tim is Batman, Damian becomes Robin, and Helena remains as Nightwing, serving as some much needed support for Tim.
Umm, let’s say that Barbara stumbles across evidence that Burce isn’t really dead, so she sends her hot antihero boyfriend as well as Cass, who is looking for an opportunity for redemption following her unfortunate evil arc, off after it so that’s how we get Brucequest.
Meanwhile, Stephanie is still Batgirl I guess. Her relationship with Tim, already in an off-again phase, is further stymied by the fact he’s Batman now because kissing Batman is just weird and wrong.
Damian feels much more threatened by Tim in this AU because of the whole primogeniture, heir to the Batman thing. He does come to respect him over their time working together, especially when Tim expresses openness to the idea of Damian being the ultimate inheritor of Batman one day.
While Tim is taking on the masked inheritance of their father, Helena takes on the civilian side, taking control of Wayne enterprises and serving the socialite role.
She also, alongside Tim, works to take care of Damian. He doesn’t respect her in the beginning either, but she kicks his ass a few times and he comes around. He also comes to respect her understanding of lethal force and her decision not to use it. She also gets the chance to finally use the teaching degree she got in bits and pieces and homeschools him.
Anyway, Batman comes back, Tim moves on to a new mantle because he can’t go back to being Robin after being Batman, the universe resets, etc, etc
This is really where I’m going to stop now.
