Bad Timing (Levi x Reader) Part 8
Tumblr media
Summary: how do you tell your friends that you’re falling for your big brothers’ best friend?
Word Count: 4.8K
__
You woke up late the next morning, having forgotten to plug in your phone which also functioned as your alarm. Instead Hange had busted into your room and ripped the blankets off of you, exposing you to the chilly air. You yelped and reached blindly for the covers, your mind too foggy with sleep to comprehend how late you were.
"Rise and shine sleeping beauty." Hange sang as she jostled your shoulder.
"Wha..."
"School starts in like thirty minutes come on bust a move." That woke you up. You tossed your legs over the edge and stumbled around your room, pulling on a pair of joggers and a large t shirt. Hange had left once she was sure that you were awake, leaving you alone to get ready. You didn't bother with make up, not that you ever really did. You double checked that you had all of your supplies for school before zipping up your bag and meandered down the steps. Erwin and Hange were already pulling on their shoes by the door, Erwin was wrapping one of his scarves around Hange's neck. You scrunched your nose in disgust at their outright display of affection and shoved your feet into a pair of old sneakers.
The three of you exited the house, and made a beeline for Erwin's minivan which had been heating up to melt off the frost and snow. The drive was slow and cold, the van was dated so no matter how early Erwin woke up to heat up the car for you, it would always be colder than the Arctic. Erwin also drove like a god damn grandpa in the winter due to the icy roads which didn't help. Finally you made it to school with only five minutes before the bell rang, you bolted into the building, you were in such a hurry that you didn't bother to stomp the snow off your feet as you entered. Which was a mistake because in your hast you lost your footing on the already slick floor, you yelped as you fell flat on your ass. You blinked as you tried to comprehend what had just happened, you were brought back to the present by the sound of boisterous laughter. You turned to glare at Connie and Sasha who where standing to the left munching on a bag of hot cheetos.
"You should've seen the look on your face!" Connie howled as he slapped his thigh. Sasha giggled and nodded as she wiped cheeto dust on Connie's white shirt while he wasn't watching. You rolled your eyes as you picked yourself up off the floor, you ignored them and pushed forward down the hall. Sasha and Connie trailed after you since they had the same first class as you, making jokes as they went.
"You know they really should put out those yellow signs, you know the ones with the person falling?" Sasha joked loudly.
"Yeah I know what you mean, then we could print out a picture of (Y/n)'s face and then stick it on the sign." Connie quipped which lead to the two of them dissolving into another fit of laughter. You ducked into the class room as the minute bell rang weaving through the desks to get to your seat. Armin watched you with wide eyes as you pulled your things out for chem, after your desk was covered in notebooks and pens you topped it off with your phone, which was still dead. The bell rang and then Sasha and Connie staggered in, your teacher shook her head and marked them tardy once again.
"Did you get my text last night?" Armin asked, eyeing your phone on your desk.
"Aw no Armin I'm sorry, I didn't charge it last night so it's dead." you apologized as you attempted to organize your cluttered desk. Armin smiled sweetly and nodded,
"It's all good! I was just wondering what your schedule for this week was and if you wanted to study together again?" Armin explained as he pushed his pencil across his desktop.
"I'd love to study, Geometry is kicking my ass right now." you moaned, the thought of your math class made your stomach heavy with dread.
"I can help you with that if you can help me with poem for English." Armin said softly, his blue eyes sparkling with a playful glint. You rolled your eyes you knew that Armin wouldn't need your help with any of his classes, he was just trying to make you feel smarter.
"Whatever you want baby doll." Armin's face flushed at the pet name that you used for him, you had recently started calling him the nickname due to his doll like features. He averted his gaze to the board where the teacher had written a warm up question on the board to get class started. Instead of working on the problem like a good student, you decided to use the first five minutes of class time to revive your dead phone. You plugged your charger into your laptop and then plugged your phone into the charger, once you saw the tiny lightning bolt you turned your attention to the board.
__
Chemistry went by uncharacteristically fast, the teacher kept the class busy with a lecture as well as a rowdy game of kahoot in preparation for your midterm. You had no time to check your phone, so it wasn't until you were walking through the hallway with Mikasa and Sasha that you noticed that Levi had responded. According to your phone, he had responded only fifteen minutes after you sent the initial message.
"My bathroom schedule is none of your concern."
You smiled at your phone, it may not seem like he was pleased with your text but you knew better. You had come to appreciate Levi's own weird way of showing that he cared, it had been no small feat either. So you decided to interpret his response as "don't worry I'm fine." you shoved your phone back into your pocket and continued to push through the throng of students in the hall. Sasha walked a few paces in front of Mikasa and you, swinging her lunchbox and humming along to whatever song was playing through her ear buds. Mikasa tugged her scarf up over her nose as you passed Eren who waved vaguely in your direction. Your eyes roamed over Mikasa's form, she had recently switched her aesthetic a bit, changing her wardrobe to a more soft goth mixed with grunge.
Today she wore a green plaid skirt with a belt cinched tightly around her thin waist. She had selected a black turtleneck that clung to her curves with a thick silver necklace with a heart pendant. And of course she wore her red scarf around her neck. You had to admit that it suited her, she looked hot as hell. Sasha on the other hand often dressed in a more causal manner. Today the brunette wore a pair of baggy jeans that hung off her hips, only staying in place because of the shoe lace that she had tied around her waist to function as a belt. Despite the cold weather Sasha wore a tiny pink cami with cute little strawberries on it, she also wore a light pink cardigan over the cami, presumably to prevent herself from being dress coded. Seeing how cute your friends had dressed made you feel embarrassed, you frowned down at your sweatpants and your t shirt that had an ugly bleach stain on the front. You'd do better tomorrow, you thought to yourself as you and Mikasa followed Sasha to your next class, which was World History.
The three of you arrived just in time, not that it mattered anyway. The history teachers always took their time on Mondays, spending a minimum of at least twenty minutes in the hall chatting about sports. You took your seats in the back of the room, surprisingly Connie and Jean were already seated and arguing quietly.
"-I don't know that's a bit sus but hey I won't judge." Connie retorted, crossing his arms and averting his gaze while Jean glared at him.
"What are you guys talking about?" Sasha interrupted as she dropped into her seat next to Connie. Jean's cheeks flushed as he hardened his glare on Connie who waved Sasha off.
"Oh nothing" Connie winked at Jean who eyed the pair suspiciously, knowing that neither one could keep a secret.
"Aw ok then." Sasha looked a bit disappointed as she dropped her huge lunchbox down on the desk.
"Got anything good in there?" Jean sighed, eager to change the subject.
"Duh you dummy." Sasha scoffed as she opened the bag and began pawing through it's contents.
"Let me rephrase that: Got anything to spare? I have practice tonight and I didn't pack any snacks." Jean exasperated as he pointed to the lung box. Sasha paused and pursed her lips in thought while Connie poorly covered his laughter.
"Hmmm what's in it for me?" Sasha hummed thoughtfully as she pulled out a variety of granola bars and fanned them in front of her face tauntingly.
"I'm giving you the chance to be a good friend that should be enough!" Jean fumed with his eyes locked on the bars. You watched the pair go back in forth as they bartered for the snacks until they finally settled that Jean would be the designated driver for the party this weekend. You watched as Jean stuffed a handful of granola bars in his soccer bag and Sasha opened up another bag of hot cheetos. You giggled and turned to gauge Mikasa's reaction, she had a small smile on her full lips as she jotted down some notes.
"Speaking of parties, where is the party this weekend?" You asked as you pulled your own notebook out to take some notes. Connie cocked his head, his thin eyebrows furrowing as he stared at you.
"Your house I thought." Connie remarked as he drummed his pencil against the desk.
"Oh, I wasn't really planning on hosting but..."
"No Connie it's at Marco's remember?" Jean stated as he rolled his eyes.
"My bad." Connie chuckled.
"Well still I don't think I was invited so I wouldn't want to impose." you admitted.
"Nonsense! Marco would love to have you over." Sasha assured you as she once again wiped her hand on Connie's sleeve.
"Yeah Marco wouldn't mind if you tagged along." Connie shrugged, not even noticing that Sasha had left a bright red stain on his sleeve from the cheeto dust. You noticed that Jean looked a bit uncomfortable, the tips of his ears turning a bit pink. Strange, maybe something happened between the two of them.
"I don't know guys, I really wouldn't want to take advantage of the guy, he seems really nice and I wouldn't want him to think badly of me." you sighed, thinking about the sweet freckled barista.
"I'll ask him, don't worry about it!" Connie waved you off before he turned back to his work. You nodded, deciding to throw in the towel with this argument.
____
After history, you went your separate ways with your friends and went to your next class. English was easy enough, your teacher was an older woman who also doubled as the theater director. This meant that she would often assign some busy work at the beginning of the period and turn you loose so she could make preparations for the next production. So once you finished the assignment for today's class you allowed yourself some time on your phone. Levi's message remained unanswered as you ran through all the possible replies. Everything that you thought of didn't seem to fit so you decided to leave it unanswered until you could think of something good.
__
Levi tapped his foot impatiently as he watched Farlan and Isabel fumbled around the small flat. Farlan was rooting through a bin filled with shoes searching for his loafers. Isabel was standing in front of a small mirror holding up two different pairs of earrings up to her head to see which best matched her outfit. Finally they both found what they were looking for, Farlan slid on his brown loafters and Isabel fastened her hoops to her ears and then they were off. The streets of Paris were dusted in about a foot of snow, which Farlan bitched about due to his poor choice of footwear.
"Can we please call an uber? My toes are going to fall off!" Farlan complained as he shook snow out of his shoes. Isabel giggled and tossed her scarf over her shoulder.
"I like the snow." her green eyes sparkled playfully as she teased the older boy.
"So do I but that doesn't mean I want it between my god damn toes." Farlan hissed as he lifted his other foot to shake out more snow. Levi watched the pair bicker with a certain fondness in his gaze. They had been his first friends and for a time his only family. After his mother died, he was sent to live in an orphanage where he met the odd pair. Even if he was only in the orphanage for two years, he still had come to love the idiots. Thankfully they never lost touch, Farlan had turned 18 in July so he now had custody of Isabel and rented a flat for the both of them. Isabel was still only 16 so technically Farlan was her legal guardian, and so far he seemed to be doing a good job.
"What do you think Levi, should we call an uber?" Isabel asked, bumping her shoulder into Levi's to grab his attention.
"We're already almost there." Levi deadpanned as the three of them meandered down the sidewalk. The city was surprisingly busy for a Monday evening, couples walked with arms linked, families were window shopping, and students sat perched on barstools as they drank coffee while they typed away on laptops. Levi couldn't remember much about Paris, at least not this side of the city. He had grown up in the north-eastern district, which was known to be poorer than the central district or southern district. Farlan had managed to get a job at a law firm as an assistant which had allowed him to move himself and Isabel to the central district. Of course Kenny sent Farlan and Isabel a monthly allowance to keep their heads above water, but it was mostly Farlan who had scrounged the money together to move the pair.
"Then it's settled! We'll walk!" Isabel whooped as she skipped ahead of the two boys. Farlan groaned and shot Levi a disappointed look.
"Don't look at me like that, you're the idiot that wore loafers." Levi scolded.
"I hate how you're always right." Farlan chuckled. The trio walked the rest of the way to the restaurant in relative silence. Thankfully the walk wasn't too long, they sat themselves in a booth. A waiter came and took their orders, Levi was slightly taken aback when Farlan ordered a bottle of wine, but he quickly remembered that the legal drinking age in France was 18. The waiter left them to put in their order, Levi took the moment of peace to check his phone. A hand full of texts from Hange, a meme from Erwin, and.... no response from you.
He frowned as he stared at his own response, looking back at it he wasn't sure how she could respond to that. He mentally kicked himself, for the first time in your odd relationship you showed an interest in him and all he was doing was pushing you away. Levi was so deeply engrossed in his thoughts that he failed to notice that the waiter had already brought them their drinks. Isabel tapped her straw on the table a few times to rip the paper, once the tip of the straw was exposed she lifted the straw to her lips and blew. The paper shot off the straw and hit Levi square in the chin. Farlan snorted and spat his wine back into his glass so he could laugh at Levi's exasperated expression. Isabel howled with laughter, she banged her hand on the table dramatically as Levi frowned at the two of them unimpressed.
"How old are you?" Levi ridiculed as he stooped to pick up the scrap piece of paper. He balled the trash up and set it down on the table top. Farlan sighed as he finally managed to quell his laughter.
"Someone has to keep you humble Levi." Farlan teased as he took another sip of wine. Levi reached for the bottle and poured himself a glass, Isabel was drinking a root beer loudly through her straw. Levi sat his phone down on the table as he gave his friends his undivided attention. Isabel told him about her job at a doggy day care where she cleaned kennels and watched dogs. Farlan told him about his superiors and how they told him he would make a good lawyer one day. Levi felt a huge sense of relief as he listened to his friends, he was glad that the two of them were finally making a living for themselves. Levi was politely listening to Farlan rant about one of his annoying coworkers when he noticed that Isabel had grown uncharacteristically quiet. His heart dropped when he saw that Isabel had his phone and was frowning at the screen. Farlan followed his gaze and grew quiet as well.
"Isabel what do you think you are doing?" Levi enunciated each word, his tone dripping with venom. Isabel looked up at him, her cheeks tinged pink when she realized that she had been caught.
"Your phone was open and I saw her text..." Isabel trailed off as she turned to show Farlan. Levi slapped his palm over his face and sighed deeply. Farlan whistled lowly as he read the text.
"Shot her down real quick didn't you Levi." Farlan chuckled as he took another sip of wine. Levi frowned, another wave of guilt washing over him.
"Didn't mean to." he mumbled as he lifted his glass to his lips. Isabel had already set his phone down and favored her own phone, her eyes were scanning over the screen quickly as she scrolled through her phone. A few minutes of silence passed before Isabel showed Levi her screen, she had pulled up your instagram.
"This her?" she questioned, Levi only gave her a curt nod as he finished off the wine in his glass.
"Aw Levi's she's adorable!" Isabel gushed as she scrolled through your page, pausing on one of your more popular posts. A series of pictures of you on a beach towel wearing large sunglasses and a huge sun hat, the quality was amazing. He was sure that Armin took the photo, the kid had a knack for photography.
"Damn if you don't want her I'll take her." Farlan hummed as he looked over Isabels shoulder. Levi shot Farlan a disapproving glare.
"What's her number?" Farlan pressed, Isabel choked on her drink as she burst out laughing.
"Forget about it." Levi hissed as he snatched his phone off the table top.
"I'm just teasing you Levi." Farlan waved his hand dismissively as he poured another glass of wine. Levi rolled his eyes and let out a grunt, his own version of acknowledging Farlan's good natured jokes.
"You should call her." Isabel mused as she chewed on her food. Levi furrowed his brows, what would he even say to you? It's not like the two of you casually conversed, he usually only called you if Erwin couldn't reach you, which rarely happened. He glanced at his watch and frowned, if it was eight o'clock here that meant it was about two back home. Therefore you were still in school so he would have to wait until later.
"That's a dumb idea." Levi monotoned, Isabel rolled her eyes dramatically.
"No it's not, even if you're just her friend I'm sure she would like to know that she's on your mind!" Isabel insisted enthusiastically, Farlan nodded in agreement as he shoveled a forkful of pasta into his mouth.
"She's right you know-" Farlan paused as he swallowed his mouthful of food, "not everyone can handle your cold demeanor as well as others." Farlan chided as he lifted another bite to his lips.
"Fine I'll call her." Levi caved in as he stabbed his fork into his salad. Isabel squealed in excitement.
"This is great Big-bro! I'm so proud of you!" she gushed, her eyes glimmering with adoration. Levi couldn't resist reaching across the table and ruffling her hair affectionately. Dinner ended without any more noteworthy events, Farlan and Levi split the check and then bundled back up to walk back to the flat.
___
You sat at your dining room table staring hopelessly at your geometry homework. A bowl of cold soup sat untouched, you had been too stressed to eat dinner, a habit that you had recently picked up. Erwin and Hange had made dinner so you could get straight to work, which had been very sweet, but you felt guilty because truthfully you had barely made a dent in your assignment. You thought about calling Armin, he would help you. No you couldn't bother him, he was probably doing work of his own.
So you suffered in silence, the shapes and numbers spinning in your brain the longer you stared at the page. With a frustrated sigh you flipped the page only to see more blank problems that needed to be done. You stood up intending to stretch your legs and take a brain break. After you'd walked around the island in your kitchen three times you came back to the table and dropped down into the chair. You cracked your knuckles before clutching your pencil in a death grip and began to attempt one of the questions. As you scribbled on the page, attempting to make sense of the numbers and letters, you pressed too hard on your pencil and snapped the lead. You watched the tiny piece of lead roll across the page, out of spite you swiped your hand over the page to wipe the lead off.
Your eyes widened at the large smudge that now marred your paper. It all started with a single tear, it rolled down your cheek and splashed onto your paper. Before you could really understand why, you were absolutely bawling your eyes out at the dining room table. Was it because you were frustrated with school? Yeah that was definitely part of the reason. Before you could spiral into a dark pit of self deprecation, you were rudely interrupted by your phone ringing. You squinted through your bleary eyes to see that it was already 10:30 pm. You sighed, not really caring who was on the other end of the line you answered the phone.
"What" you blurted, not really in the mood to talk.
"..."
"Well? I'm kind of in the middle of something right now." your voice quivered as you fought back tears .
"Is...this a bad time?" your heart dropped at the sound of Levi's smooth voice.
"Uh" you sniffled and wiped your eyes.
"No it's not I can talk, what's the matter Levi?" you asked as you continued to wipe your eyes.
"Are you sure?" Levi probed, you nodded despite the fact that he couldn't see you. You stood up and began to pace around the kitchen once more.
"Y-Yeah-" you hiccuped and cringed, Levi sighed on the other end of the line.
"(Y/n) be honest with me....are you drunk?" Levi interrogated, you gasped it was a Monday night! Did he really think that you were that much of an alcoholic?
"No! I just...."
"Hm? What is it?" Levi quipped clearly enjoying your frazzled state.
"If you must know, I was in the middle of a mental break down." you admitted with a heavy sigh. Levi went silent on the other line, you were beginning to regret your honesty.
"It's only Monday." Levi cringed at his less than empathetic response.
"Yeah you're telling me." you chuckled, Levi immediately relaxed at the sound of your laughter even if it wasn't as bubbly as it usually was.
"What's bothering you?" Levi asked, surprisingly softly. You furrowed your brows surely he didn't call you just to hear about your day? He was probably just being nice.
"Oh uh... just school I guess." you paused your pacing to drop onto the sofa and kick your feet up onto the coffee table.
"I see." Levi mused as he reclined in the armchair he was seated in.
"Anyway, enough about me, why did you call me? Is there something you need?" you asked, you were sure that he didn't want to hear you complain about geometry.
"It's fine, tell me about your day." Levi grimaced, tell me about your day? Who was he your mother?
"O-Okay. Well I guess it was fine up until I tried to do this stupid geometry." you grumbled, the mere thought of your homework making your stomach sick with dread.
"Geometry?" Levi hummed, crossing his leg so his ankle was over his knee.
"Yeah." you sighed dejectedly, waiting for his scathing remark about how stupid you were.
"That one can be tough." Levi huffed, you could hear him re-situate so you waited to respond. Once you were sure he was settled you inhaled sharply to prepare yourself.
"It's just not clicking for me." you groaned, Levi snorted and once again you could hear some shuffling.
"Want some help?" he asked. You blinked slowly, not fully processing his words.
"Help?"
"Take it or leave it."
"I would be an idiot to decline."
______
"That wasn't so bad was it?" Levi asked, a playful glint in his grey eyes.
"It was awful, but I'm grateful for the help." you sighed, resting your head on the table. You'd been on the phone with Levi for almost two hours now. After he had offered to lend you a hand you had switched to facetime so he could see the problems. Levi tapped his pen on the counter top he was sitting at. Yeah you heard that right, Levi does math with a fucking pen like a psychopath.
"Anytime." his lip twitched upwards ever so slightly.
"God, I'm sorry that all we talked about was fucking math." you apologized.
"It's fine really. " Levi shrugged once again tapping his pen on the counter.
"Tell me about Paris? How are things on the other side of the pond?" you joked, finally able to genuinely smile now that the stress of your homework was lessened.
"First off, never say 'pond' again. Second, it's cold as a witch's tit over here." Levi enunciated each point by tapping the pen against the counter.
"Really? Is there snow over there?" You asked, suddenly very invested in the weather in France.
"Yeah there's a fuck ton." Levi stood up and brought his phone with him to a window. You could tell that he was on a high floor, you could see the lights of the city through the flurries of snow.
"Woah, it's so pretty!" you gushed as you admired Levi's view.
"Tch, I guess." Levi clicked his tongue as he flipped the camera back onto his face.
"Hey what time is it there?" you yawned.
"Six am." Levi deadpanned.
"What!! Why did you let me keep you up so late Levi! My god go to bed." you huffed incredulously. Levi rolled his eyes as he listened to you lecture him on the importance of a good nights rest.
"I mean seriously Levi no wonder why you're always so grumpy." you finished your rant as you closed your bedroom door and began pulling out a pair of flannel pj pants and a large hoodie since your room seemed to be particularly chilly. You dropped your phone onto your bed (camera down obviously) and began to change into your pjs.
"Don't worry about it sweetheart." Levi drawled, his voice a bit muffled by your comforter. Once you picked up the phone you dropped down onto your bed and sighed.
"Seriously, I'm just adjusting to the time change." Levi shrugged, he was now in his own room, also laying on the bed a pale morning glow seeping into the room.
"Uh huh sure." you teased, a smile spreading across your lips. After a moment of silence you decided that it was time to call it a night.
"Well, unlike you I need my beauty sleep." you said groggily.
"Good luck with that." Levi scoffed, his own voice a bit scratchy.
"Thanks again Levi. Goodnight or erm, Good morning I guess." you giggled as you watched Levi try to cover up a yawn.
"Yeah yeah whatever." He scoffed, you waved as you hung up. You rolled over and plugged your phone in, having learned from your past mistake. You sighed contently as you snuggled beneath the covers, your head filled with thoughts of geometry and Levi.

With My Life - Chapter Four
Tumblr media
masterlist - ao3 - last chapter - next chapter
warnings:  (all graphic) violence, guns,  blood, smut, implied PTSD
an: hmmm. hm. i don’t really know what to say about this chapter actually !
                                               Six Months Later
“Elide it’s fine already, go to lunch - you’ve been here all morning,” Darrow chided her from behind his desk. Elide flashed him a grin and scooped her papers up, resting them against her laptop.
“I’m going, I’m going! Having lunch with that crazy niece of yours,” she teased, laughing as he rolled his eyes and waved her out of his office.
She sighed as she closed the door behind her and went down the hall to her little office space. It was barely big enough to have her desk and one plant, let alone meetings so hers were held in Darrow’s more spacious room.
After she put her stuff away and grabbed her jacket, Elide would be going to have lunch with Aelin, who’d she had only grown closer with over the past half year. Nehemia too - the three of them had a standing group night on Fridays where they would all convene in what was once Lorcan’s apartment and have a mellow night in. They used to go out more to clubs and bars, but Aelin hadn’t wanted to be out late or do any sort of partying for the past few months.
It was slightly drizzling outside today - standard for fall in Varese - as she walked to her car. Even though she could’ve driven what was technically hers now, Elide had never liked driving Lorcan’s car. It lived in the parking garage and she kept it in tip-top shape, always running a finger over the black vehicle for dust. If she found any, she would carefully drive it to the car wash and top up whatever infinitesimal amount of gas she’d used.
Sometimes Fenrys came over to take it for a drive and Elide was always happy to let him take it. He always came back with red eyes to give her the keys back and Elide never questioned him.
The drive to Emrys’ cafe was a fifteen-minute drive, all the way on the other side of the city from Elide’s school, but it was close to the studio that Aelin practiced and recorded music at so Elide never minded.
She found a spot just behind Aelin’s green ‘67 Ferrari 275 and waited for a truck to pass before stepping out and locking her car. She looked both ways before jogging across the road and popping into the shop.
As she put her jacket away, Elide scanned the cafe and saw Aelin had already claimed a two-seated table and had ordered them a drink each. She looked ridiculously happy and Elide couldn’t wait to find out why. Maybe she’d be able to worm it out of Aelin before their family dinner tonight. Because that’s what they were now - family.
Aelin stood to hug her when Elide arrived at the table and they both sat down again, smiling gently. “Elide, babes, how are you? How’s that boring uncle of mine?”
“Darrow’s great, as usual,” Elide said with a slight eye roll at their dramatics. Darrow had always claimed to be above such things, but his flair for the dramatics rivaled Aelin’s. “My research is going well, too. I’ve really narrowed down my thesis proposal, so it’s looking up.” After… it happened, Elide’s work had taken a hit.
She hadn’t been able to think about going to school until she imagined what Lorcan would say. How he would cajole her into going and how he would neg her until she did.
It had been hard after that too, but she still went. Still paid as much attention as she could bear and was almost present in most conversations.
She loathed to admit, it tore at her heart to say it, but things were getting easier. Every day, every moment it was easier to breathe. To smile and sleep and to live. In a world without him, in a world where it became just a bit more difficult to find something that reminded her of him.
They chatted idly after ordering their lunches - a soup for Aelin and a sandwich for Elide - and Elide finished her cup of tea. “Are you going to keep me waiting? I want to know your secret, Ms. Galathynius.”
Aelin’s eyes sparkled and she broke into the largest grin Elide had ever seen. Opening her mouth, Aelin was about to tell her when Luca interrupted them with their food. “For the lovely ladies,” the young man said, bowing theatrically.
They chuckled and spoke to him for a couple minutes before Emrys was calling him back to the kitchen and they dug in.
Elide took a bite of her sandwich, speaking around the food in her mouth, not that Aelin would care, “So, spill. I am not waiting till tonight.”
Aelin laughed joyously, her bright laughter flitting around the intimate shop. “Let me have some soup first, ok?” She took a spoonful of her tomato soup and dipped a torn-off piece of brown bread into it before popping it in her mouth.
Rolling her eyes, Elide stewed and silently ate, tracking Aelin’s every move until the blonde finally put her spoon down and cleared her throat, taking a sip of water. Then, she put her hands in her lap and waited for Elide to place down her sandwich, waiting eagerly.
“I’m pregnant with- with twins.”
The air left her lungs and Elide gaped, her jaw dropping. “Oh my gods, are you serious? How long?”
Tears, happy ones for once, popped up in Aelin’s eyes and she offered Elide a watery smile, “Three months today. I had my appointment earlier and… I’m so happy.”
Elide stretched her arm across the table and grabbed Aelin’s hand, squeezing it supportively, “I’m happy for you, my love. So happy.”
+*+*+*+*+*+*
The penthouse was cold when she got home. Nobody was there to greet her and putting her one jacket up on the coat rack only reminded her of how lonely she was.
Elide dropped her laptop and bag on the kitchen island and turned the lights on. She sighed, sitting on one of the stools, and looked to the living room, the sheets and blankets she used to make up the couch to sleep on every night neatly folded on the end cushion.
She was definitely pathetic for not being able to sleep in the perfectly fine bed upstairs, but she couldn’t.
That was the bed they shared. He held her in that bed, kissed her, fucked her in that bed. She’d fallen in love in that bed, with the man the sheets smelled like.
And now Aelin was pregnant. She and Rowan would have their own little babes, made from scratch.
She should be happy. Elide was happy, but… she wanted to cry. To scream at the unfairness. They were married, they were in love and they got a baby? No, not a baby, twins. Twins.
How was it fair for them to have everything she hadn’t known she wanted with Lorcan? Maybe it made her a horrible person, but Elide wished for a second something bad happened to them both. She cursed herself for it, reminding herself that they, too, had lost Lorcan.
Elide couldn’t help the tears and the sob that tore from her throat. She cried loudly, her shoulders shaking as she put her forearms on the marble countertop and put her head in the crook of her elbow, her cries somewhat muffled.
I just want you back, Lorcan, Elide thought to herself. Just for a minute, ‘cause I need some help. I need you.
No one answered and Elide wasn’t sure if she’d been expecting it. Slowly, she got up and walked upstairs, sniffling once. Elide hugged herself, turning her head to wipe her nose on the shoulder of her sweater.
She turned on the hall light and looked around the level hardly anyone had set foot on in months. Walking to the end of it, to the door waiting there, Elide dragged her hand along the wall, looking at the bareness of it.
She looked to her right, out the wall of windows, reaching out to press her finger against a raindrop that hadn’t yet fallen down the glass. For a few seconds, time stopped and Elide watched the rain, letting its calming pitter-patter soothe her frayed soul.
With one shaky sigh, Elide padded the rest of the way to his bedroom and opened the door, holding her breath as she stepped over the threshold for the first time in six months.
Nothing had been changed. The sheets were still rumpled and a visible layer of dust over every surface.
Elide ignored the disarray and walked to the bed, fingering the black dress shirt she’d worn that last morning with him. Silently, Elide undressed and donned the shirt, the cool material practically drowning her. She didn’t mind it at all and did up a few buttons before crawling into bed and pulling the thick duvet up to her chin.
Sinking back into the plush mattress and pillows, silent tears streaking from her shut eyes, Elide thought about him. About life with him. What could have been.
If they’d gotten married, would they have stayed here? In the middle of Varese? She’d always loved the Wendlyn countryside, maybe they would’ve moved out there, to a large property and house settled at the heart of their land.
Elide didn’t know how long it took, but eventually imagining a life that would never be exhausted her and she fell into a deep, grief soaked slumber.
What had once been her refuge, a gentle, comforting oblivion, was now a tragedy, something she couldn’t look away from.
Lorcan was in a hospital room, a glass door separating them. On the bed, a dark haired boy was asleep. He must have been seven or eight and he was the spitting image of Lorcan, except he had a soft and gentle face as he dozed.
A smile, soft and beautiful, appeared on Lorcan’s face as he looked at the child and then he turned around, facing the door and Elide. In his arms, he cradled a precious bundle - a wee little one whose arrestingly caramel eyes were wide open and staring out the room’s window towards the night sky.
Tears burned the back of her eyes and Elide put her hand on the handle, twisting it only to find it was locked.
“E,” Lorcan said, shifting the baby to one arm and the other he stretched out to her, beckoning her in, “come in, love.”
“I’m trying,” she said, her voice shaking. “Lor, I’m trying, unlock the door.”
“It’s already open,” he told her, a serene smile on his face. “C’mon, meet our kids. They miss you.”
“Lor- Lorcan,” she sobbed, her voice cracking, “stop, just open the door, please, baby, I-.” Elide tried again, yanking on the handle and pressing her hand against the glass. “Let me in, please. Open the door.”
“It’s unlocked, just open it.”
“No, no- it’s not,” she said, crying harder, “I miss you so much, please just stay with me.”
“I will be with you always,” he promised, giving her a smile before looking down at the baby in his arms and leaning down to press a soft kiss to her forehead. “I promise.”
It was like a bucket of ice cold water was dumped on her and Elide woke up, the sheets and duvet twisted around her, a result of her thrashing. Her chest rose and fell unevenly as she gulped down air and pressed her hands to her cheeks, her fingers coming away wet and salty.
With a heavy sigh, Elide worked on untangling the fabric wrapped around her and looked at the clock on his nightstand.
Rowan and Aelin were expecting everyone at their townhouse at six o’clock sharp. It was nearly half past four now and she climbed out of bed, stumbling into the bathroom and looking into the mirror.
She saw her puffy eyes, tear-tracked cheeks, and red nose. Elide looked and felt very much like shit and she breathed out slowly, trying to calm herself before she left for dinner.
+*+*+*+*+*+*
Lorcan Salvaterre parked his car outside a very familiar townhouse. He’d gone to his apartment first, not expecting to be welcomed by an empty apartment.
He had wondered if Elide had even taken the apartment - it wouldn’t have surprised him if she gave it to one of their friends - but her things were strewn about the place, papers overtaking the kitchen island and half-empty mugs of tea that had long since gone cold decorated the sparsely decorated unit.
By dumb luck, his first guess that she’d be at Rowan and Aelin’s was correct because he looked out the car window to see every light on in the house and spied Fenrys through the front window, head thrown back as he laughed.
Lorcan got out, half-jogging across the rain slick road, flipping his hoodie hood over the messy bun he twisted at the nape of his neck. If there was one thing he was most thankful for for the old women who had found him, floating face-up in the weeds and reeds, it was that when they were fixing him up, they’d left his hair alone.
His heart beat frantically as he walked up the short steps and winced, his left shoulder stiff and aggravated from the past few days of travelling. He’d been in a small, unheard of village nestled in the heart of the Eyllwe forest, hidden away from the world. The women of the forgotten tribe had healed him like one of their own for the past six months.
Raising his fist, Lorcan knocked thrice and waited patiently. He heard the easy conversation inside fall silent and he could hardly breathe as the door opened and Fenrys appeared, his body half behind the door and a wary expression on his face.
Upon seeing Lorcan, Fenrys blinked hard and his jaw dropped open. Letting the door fully swing open, Fenrys hardly dared to ask, “Lorcan?”
“Hey, pup,” Lorcan said, smiling when Fenrys launched himself at him, wrapping his arms around Lorcan’s neck. The dark haired man’s smile grew softer and he put his arms around Fenrys. He knew Fenrys was crying and he lifted one of his arms to cup the back of Fen’s head.
By then, the others had been intrigued with the commotion and slowly peered into the hallway, all gasping when they saw Lorcan. Aelin went to greet him, her throat constricting, but Nehemia stopped her, looking sadly at her husband and his brother, whom Fenrys had thought he killed. “Just wait a bit,” Nehemia whispered, squeezing Aelin’s hand once.
“Is he really back,” Aelin breathed, her free hand ghosting over her stomach, where she’d just begun to show. It was a thing of comfort for Aelin and she found herself touching her belly when she was nervous or anxiety-ridden.
Nehemia didn’t have anything to say then and they watched Lorcan pull away and say words too low for anyone else to hear. Fenrys nodded and stood up, wiping his cheeks before jokingly planting a loud, wet kiss smack on Lorcan’s cheek. Lorcan rolled his eyes in good nature and wiped his cheek before looking to the others waiting, shell shocked, down the hall. “Oh, y’all having a party? Without me?”
Rowan let out a dry sob and the two friends met in the middle of the hall, hugging tightly. “Fuckin’ bastard, piece of shite wankstain,” Rowan muttered through his tears. “Couldn’t just stay dead, huh?”
“Fuck you too,” Lorcan said, smiling widely. They didn’t say anything else, just stood there, holding each other. It was simultaneous when they pulled apart, small grins on their faces. “I missed you.”
Rowan nodded, too emotional to say it back. Slowly, the other guys joined them and Nehemia and Aelin took their leave, retreating back to the living room. Aelin squeezed Nehemia’s hand, worrying her brow, “N… why is he back now?”
There was nothing good about the look in Nehemia’s eyes as she glanced to the front hall. Lorcan’s return brought on too many questions, ones she couldn’t answer and ones neither Aelin or Elide would like. “We’ll figure it out,” she whispered, gently pressing her hand to Aelin’s stomach and the babes she was carrying. “We always do.”
+*+*+*+*+*+*
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” Elide cursed herself after she thanked her driver, Ress, and hopped out of the black town car. The building had a car service and normally, she would never use it, but after she had gotten sucked back into her work and had been asked to fetch the cake, she hadn’t felt like driving herself.
Aelin had told her to dress nicely tonight, but Elide didn’t have time to change out of her leggings and hoodie. Throwing on Lorcan’s flannel made it look intentional so she just went with it.
The drizzle had turned into a full downpour and she ducked her head as she raced up the stone pathway and the stairs, precariously holding the bakery box. Elide looked out over the street as she dug out her keys, doing a double take when she saw Lorcan’s car sitting pretty across the road.
It didn’t make any sense, unless Fenrys had taken it, but she could’ve sworn she saw the only set of keys in the silver dish when she hurried out of the apartment. Logically, she understood Lorcan wasn’t back and that the only explanation was that Fenrys had taken it, but she couldn’t quell the hope that rose in her.
Hurriedly, Elide unlocked the door and rushed inside, already rambling, “Fen, did you take Ohitekah’s car? I could’ve sworn the keys were in the key dish.” Nobody answered her and Elide paused, slowly toeing off her shoes and continuing down the hall. “Guys?”
Elide tucked her short hair behind her ear, feeling the need to touch the chain around her neck that had once been Lorcan’s and run her fingertips up and down the cool silver links. She padded further into the house, her furrowed brows only wrinkling more and more when the house fell dead silent. “Guys, what’s happening?”
She turned the corner into the living room and froze, her eyes immediately zoning in on Lorcan, who was sitting on the edge of the coffee table, his long legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles. With a gasp, she dropped the box, the cake no doubt smushed to bits because of her mishap.
Elide didn’t notice anything else, couldn’t articulate a single thought as Lorcan stood and took a step towards her, approaching her as if she were a wild animal. “Hey, Lochan.”
Elide let out a half-crazed laugh and flew towards him, crashing into his arms so hard that Lorcan rocked back a step. He banded his arms around her waist and pulled her against him, burying his face in her hair and breathing her in.
“Hey, Salvaterre,” she whispered, her hands gripping the back of his hoodie tightly. She pressed her face into the curve of his neck, her nose cold against his warm skin. Her lips, slightly chapped from biting them constantly, brush over his pulse as she asked tentatively, “Is this real?”
“Yes,” he promised her.
“And you’re not leaving?”
“Never again,” he said, kissing the top of her head.
Elide sniffled and cried once, still menacing when she muttered, “You better not.”
+*+*+*+*+*+*
The dark figure had been lying stomach down on the rooftop for hours, watching through the window as a family reunited.
His back was to the window, a perfect headshot lined up as they breathed in slowly and peered through the scope, watching the target hug the petite woman, who clung to him like a lifeline.
Their gloved finger slipped over the trigger of the rifle, the metal curve as familiar as an old friend. Willing their heartbeat to slow, they closed their eyes briefly, finding the headspace they needed for the task.
When they opened their eyes, ready for the kill, a viper’s voice crackled through the earpiece, cool and commanding, “Not tonight, dear. Let us allow them to enjoy themselves a little while longer, yes?”
“Of course, ma’am.”

Take A Chance IV
Simon Dominic (AOMG) x Y/N (Reader) Genre: Romance / Angst Count: 2.4k+ Warnings: None Rating: Mature (suggestive, swearing) Summary: Who would’ve thought a one night stand with Simon D would turn into FWB? It only gets more complicated when you developed feelings, against your better judgement.
Tumblr media
Chapter One. | Chapter Two. | Chapter Three. | Chapter Four. | Chapter Five. | Chapter Six. | Chapter Seven. |
Over the course of two weeks, you and Kiseok had a pretty good routine going on. He didn't come over every night, more like every other but he called and texted you nearly every chance he got.
At first you didn't think anything of it. He would ask you how your day was, if you ate and how you were feeling. Nothing crazy or out of pocket. It was innocent most of the time, and usually followed up by making plans to see you later on.
There was nothing you could do to stop your heart from bursting out of your chest each time you heard a small chime. Nicole had glared at you once when you two were on lunch and you scrambled over the table to reach your phone.
"Is that Lover Boy?" She teased. You were thankful that, out of all the nicknames she could've used - and she had a lot of them -, lover boy was the one she had stuck with. For now.
"What?" You feigned ignorance, "I have no idea what you're talking about. That's...Amazon. My package was delivered."
She smirked, sipping her iced tea, "I'm sure it was."
After a few days, Kiseok's texts became a little more...risky. You had no problem with sexting. When in the right setting, it was hot but he would send you wild shit while you're in the middle of a meeting, or when you're trying to finish up the last of your work before heading to see him. Usually you could play it off then retreat to the bathroom to respond but when he sent a voice recording of that damned deep voice of his, you stood from your desk and went to the stairs corridor to call and cuss him out for getting you bothered at eleven in the morning. You promised punishment as soon as you were off and Kiseok was, to say the least, intrigued. That night he was stunned at how different you could be if he gave you the reigns. Days after that, he still catches himself staring after you with amazement.
From that point on, he pretty much figured out that he could make you do nearly anything with a certain voice. It was a dangerous game that you two played. It only escalated when he coaxed you to touch yourself in the private bathroom at your company with him on FaceTime. You were lucky that you had finished in record-breaking time, before any of your coworkers (or God forbid, your boss) found out what exactly you were doing.
By the time the third week rolled around, Nicole had stopped hounding you for details of your hookups. Instead, she cautioned every now again. Typically, it was the same thing.
"Don't get too attached."
"He's a celebrity. You know how society is to foreigners dating celebs."
"What if he's a player? I just don't want you to get hurt."
While you appreciated her concern, you knew it was already too late not to get attached to him. Other than text you constantly, Kiseok did little things that had your head and heart confused.
On his bad days, he would complain to you about what happened and asked for your advice, if you had any to give, on the topic. He joked and teased you just like a friend would and willingly showed you pieces of his personal and work life as well. It was subtle at first - videos of him in the studio and then pictures of his friends when he was telling you a story about them. Each time, he would bring you food or have something delivered so you both got to learn each other's eating and drinking habits. You had seen him tipsy but he made it a point not to over do it in front of you.
Kiseok was also very considerate of you and your time, which you appreciated more than anything else. He didn't hound you if you didn't text back immediately and understood if you were swamped at the office or had to cancel that one time because the work would not be done until late in the night. He just told you to take care of yourself and later, had a pizza ordered to your job. It was around that time that you noticed you were falling a little too fast. You hadn’t admitted it out-loud, instead you chose to ignore those feelings completely. Hopefully, they would magically disappear into thin air.
You both didn't get into intimate details of your life. It was only by a weird stroke of luck that he hadn't found out about Cookie. She usually called right after you got off work anyway. Kiseok was busy during the day so when you went out to meet with your daughter and her father on your off days, he was in the middle of his own jam-packed schedule. Really, he was only available during the night time so you were more of a booty call than a FWB at this point. Neither of you had defined the "relationship" so far though, so it was hard to put a name to it right now.
It was Saturday when you woke up early and got dressed in casual clothes to go with Cookie to the zoo. Her, her father and his girlfriend were flying back to the US tonight so they wanted to do one last thing to fill the hours before the boring plane ride. You had cried last night as you thought of being without your mini-me for two whole months but his family hadn't seen her since she was much younger. You knew she would have fun, especially since his parents were dying to take her to Disneyland. You wished you could take an extended vacation and go with them but you had used most of your vacation days to take Cookie to Disney World for her birthday and that was only a couple of months ago.
Either way, you were sadder these past two days and thankfully Kiseok was swamped with an upcoming project so he hadn't been over in about four days. You didn't have to explain your blood-shot eyes.
You had so much fun at the zoo with your daughter that you didn't bother touching your phone. Your ex had taken most of the pictures for you all with promises to send them to you. It was around two in the afternoon when you four decided to go to a nearby burger joint and get some lunch. Cookie was shoving her face with chicken tenders so you decided to check your phone to pass the time. There were a few new gray message bubbles.
'Hey sexy thang ;)' 10:09AM
'This song better go double platinum with all the work I'm puttin in this bitch' 11:32AM
'Don't tell me you're asleep still?' 11:38AM
'I'm going to find a way to get your sexy ass as a video vixen one of these days' 11:47AM
'Argggh PD is calling me back. Text me when you wake up' 11:51AM
'We should be done by 2. Loco is taking me to some new place for food then I'm free. Can I swing by your place?' 11:52AM
Of course they were all from Kiseok. Not even your mother texted you as much as he did and although you liked the attention, right now you wanted to focus on Cookie since you won't physically see her for weeks after this. You frowned to yourself, feeling tears well up in your eyes for the millionth time today. You were going to miss her so much.
Composing yourself, you quickly typed a reply back. 'Hey. I'm up, just a little busy today. I won't be able to see you tonight. Maybe tomorrow if you're free?' 2:16PM
With that, you locked your phone and slid it in your pocket, once again forgetting about it soon after.
Your ex's girlfriend, Mia, nudged you slightly when she saw how pensive you were. "Hey, you okay? Was that work?"
Shaking your head, you took a breath, "No, I'm just gonna miss having my best friend around."
Cookie popped up, french fries sticking out of her mouth, "I'm gonna miss you too, mommy!" Her curly hair was pulled into two pony-tails, coils springing happily as she devoured the food in record-breaking time. "Don't cry! I'll make daddy buy you a Tiana dress so we can match!"
You laughed at the sight, tears pooling in your eyes again as her father pouted. "Ok, sweetie, I'd love to match with you."
About thirty minutes later, you all were getting ready to leave when Mia said she'd swing by and grab the rental car from the parking lot. They had to go to back to their hotel to pack. You all said your goodbyes, tears flowing freely between you and Mia. Cookie looked concerned for you as she wiped your tears, kissing your cheeks to reassure you.
Your ex hugged you and thanked you again, his eyes sparkling with happiness to have his precious daughter with him. You wished you could go with them once again as you watched their car drive off.
Back at home, you were greeted with a depressingly quiet apartment. It was cold and dark, something that was going to be a common occurrence for the coming weeks. Sniffling, you made your way to Cookie’s room, scanning her pink room with a blurring gaze. You were slowly walking around the room when you felt your phone ring.
It was Mia.
"Hello?" You called, wondering what could've happened in the last hour since you parted ways.
"Hey, Y/N, Cookie is freaking out because her father forgot to ask you to bring her Peach doll," Mia nearly shouted over the distraught crying in the background. You could hear your ex trying to console Cookie, to no avail. "Can you meet us at the airport with it?"
Searching the room, you spotted the Princess Peach doll on her bed and nearly sprinted out of the door. "I got it. When is your flight again?"
"Boarding is in another hour and a half."
Shit. You scrambled to snatch your keys and shoved the doll in your purse. "Okay, I'll leave now and meet you at departures, okay? Tell Cookie mommy's on the way."
You hung up and made a mad dash down to the parking garage. The airport was about a forty-five minute drive from your place, not including traffic or any other delays like the predictable Seoul rush hour.
Tumblr media
At his own apartment, Simon was lounging on his couch, laptop on his chest as he worked. Loco was right next to him, on Face Time with the one and only Jay Park as he was at the airport.
"Have a safe flight," Loco was saying before Kiseok slid shoulder-to-shoulder with him.
"Get there and back in once piece, boss," the oldest one teased and Jay laughed. Unfortunately, he was distracted a little too long because he suddenly collided into a woman. The phone fell, face up and there were suddenly two faces on the screen.
His body guards reacted immediately and made sure the two were alright. Mildly interested, the two on the other side of the line watched on.
"I-I'm so sorry, oh God, I'm just in a rush." The woman's voice was so eerily familiar to Kiseok that he took a second to strain to hear it over the airport commotion.
Jay was off to the side, picking up his passport and other belongings that fell. "Nah, it's alright. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, thank you. Again, I'm so sorry I wasn’t- Is this your phone?"
Without further ado, the woman picked up Jay's phone, and Kiseok felt his eyes bulge out of his skull when her face came into view.
What was Y/N doing in the airport? Loco didn't notice the other's tense reaction and simply waved at the stranger. You didn't seem to glance at the screen, yet they could easily notice your tear-stained cheeks, and just passed it back to the owner.
Over Jay reassuring her that it was fine for the third time, a loud and very male voice yelled. "Y/N! There you are!"
With another apology, you left the frame and turned towards the male voice. Jay watched the interaction for a second before continuing on his way, which was conveniently right past you. Loco was talking to the CEO like that didn't just happen when Kiseok saw you in the frame again. He was positive it was you this time around.
You wore that over-sized gray sweater that he thought was so cute on you, hair tied messily and hugging a handsome foreigner tightly. He pulled back from the hug and pushed back some pieces of your hair from your face before smiling, his lips moving. Staring up to him, you nodded, wiping your face with your sleeves. He brought you back to his chest, arms around your shoulders.
Involuntarily, Kiseok felt his jaw clench at the display of affection. His eyes tore from the phone quicker than he meant to, causing his junior to stare at him in confusion.
For the rest of the night, Loco was warily watching as the older man was fuming next to him. There was hardly any movement from his part and he was sure he was in a coma until Simon wiped out his phone, tapping it a few times before pressing it to his ear.
“Nayoung? It’s been a while. Are you free right now?”
Almost choking on his coke, Hyukwoo coughed. Why was Kiseok calling her, of all people? Once the call wrapped up, he nervously voiced his concern, “Hyung...Why are you calling her at this hour..?”
He didn’t get an immediate response, instead, Kiseok stood and glared with the power of a thousand suns at the TV in front of them.
“Am I not single? Can I not do what I want, with whoever I want, too?”
Without any further explanation, he stormed out of the apartment all together.
Hyukwoo stared after the front door in confusion. “Too?”

Jerico got into wrenchs garage, as soon as she stepped in she knew it was going to be an emotional day.
After ray Turned his beloved Junior into an EMP bomb the hacker has been trying to rebuild Him.
But with the circuits fried and the data database wiped clean he had to work from scratch.
Jer kneeled besides him, the garage Doors close.
-- fuck fuck fuck!-- wrench throws the screwdriver into the floor.
He sits down turning to his girlfriend-- oh..hey babe.. sorry you had to see that...
She shakes her head and sits with him, putting a hand on his thigh, jerico Gently presses her head against his chest.
--Its not working?
He shakes his head pulling her closer, the mask showing two dashboards in its screen-- Ive been trying to bring Junior back for a month, that EMP bomb was very strong...or I just cant Fix this
Jerico lifts his face up by the chin--hey hey...dont say that-- her accent makes herself present, he loved it so much-- theres nothing my wrench cant do, youre a genius, but maybe you should take a break, Junior wouldnt want to see you stressed
He sighs hugging her just a bit more tightly-- ill Grab my laptop and go to the hackers space, M should be there with the food already, and I told the rest that Id be there anyway
--i like that plan-- he helps her stand up.
Jerico and wrench get into the car as soon as he grabs his laptop.
The drive is silent, the hacker had a hand on his girlfriends thigh all the ride there, in silence with longing stares, giggles and soft music.
The hot summer was the perfect time to turn on the cars AC, wich made wrench eventually hand over his vest to jerico.
Not that he complained of course, it looked good on her.
When they arrived sitara hugged jer tightly-- the two lovebirds arrived, too busy kissing instead of working?-- marcus asked handing them both some pizza.
Wrench just nodds his head and goes to sit on the sofas right Next to the lockers.
--And whats up with wrench?
Jer sighed eating from her food-- its junior, he hasnt been able to bring him back
Sitara and marcus let out a "oh".
--well,if theres someone that can bring our wrench back is you!-- sitara said.
Jerico giggled and goes to sit with her boyfriend.
After eating, they both cuddle there, jer traces invisible patterns on wrenchs clothes as he has one hand behind his head and the other around his girlfriends waist.
They dont say anything, the lights dim, granting some coziness to the place
Jer tugs a nearby blanket and drapes it over them both.
--whats the matter?-- jerico asked.
He shakes his head-- not now babe
Nodding she speaks up-- I understand, can I do anything to make you feel better?
--i dont know...
Jer nodds and puts her hands on his mask-- can I?
He nodds-- y you do know you dont have to ask that after five years togheter right?
-- I know, but I just want you to be comfortable-- jerico lifts his mask up , kissing wrench softly.
He kisses back pulling her closer, a hand on the shaved back of her neck.
He yawns-- I think you should get some sleep-- she says
-- im....fine...no need to--his voice becomes increasily lower--...rest
With that he falls asleep, snoring softly.
Some hours later, jerico is asleep, wrench kneeled besides her covering her up and lifting his mask to kiss her cheek-- sleep tight sweetheart
He stands up deciding to go back to the garage and work on Junior.
When she wakes up, jer helps sitara with some Art for dedsec-- yknow marcus went to pick wrench up, they should be here at any moment
Jerico is about to say someone when wrench bursts in grabbing jer by the waist and lifting her up-- babe babe babe!!!-- he sounded like an excited puppy-- Junior is working again! Hes back! -- he hugs her tightly-- I couldnt have done it without your support babe!
Jer kisses his mask-- thats wonderfull amor!,im proud of you
He lets out a soft laugh and hugs her tightly.
The dedsec members all smile at the scene, but of course work called.
When the day was over wrench and jerico crash at their appartment.
Laying in bed, with Junior recharging in the opposite side of the room with the closet and the TV wrench pulls jerico closer.
-- im honestly so lucky to have you-- he says.
-- no wrench im the lucky one
The Man shakes his head, his blonde short locks draping over his face, he brushes them back, his mask on the nightstand.
--Lets just agree that we are lucky to have eachother yeah?
Jer nodds-- yeah lets do that
They stay in silence for a bit, wrench looks away-- can I ask you something?
--Sure,what is it?
--Why do you hide your accent? You barely speak spanish around us, even thought we all learnt it just because of you
Jer looks away too-- I dont wanna bother
--oh babe, you dont bother,I Love it when you speak in spanish, d d'you mind speaking some for me now?
Jerico shakes her head-- no, para nada (no, not at all)
Wrench falls asleep with her speaking spanish, the calming voice and her accent were music to his ears
Jer followed suit, tired too from todays work.
They were both lucky indeed.

summary: worries about university, SATs, and moving away weighed heavily like a burden on your shoulders. one thing you knew for sure, though, was that your friendship with him wouldn’t falter, and you found solace in that.
pairing: bestfriend!chenle x reader
genre: hurt/comfort, fluff
a/n: hhHHH this is my first actual fic and i’m not v satisfied djsjdjjfjd but i enjoyed writing it and that’s the thing that matters!! if anyone is reading this rn and wants to be friends: hi! i’m cam! i wanna make more friends 🥺 👉🏻👈🏻
“you look like actual shit.” bestfriend!chenle snickers at you, a cheeky grin adorning his features as he pays close attention to the messy side bangs that fell into your face and uniform tie that was thrown on lopsidedly. you roll your eyes as he meets you on the sidewalk in front of your house, the same sidewalk you two had met each morning since second grade. chenle reaches out his hand and brushes your fallen locks behind your ears, chuckling at your irritated expression as you swat his hand away.
“well maybe if someone didn’t keep me up all night playing pubg, i would’ve woken up to my alarm.” you playfully side-eye him, knowing full well that your disheveled state was upon his insistence. flashbacks rang in your head from the night prior, a full seven hours of your life spent gaming that you’d never get back. considering you two would be uni students in just the next year, your sleep schedule was horrendous.
“we need to get more sleep than we do. you know that sleep deprivation is bad for adolescent brain development?” you nag.
“okay, okay. mom.” chenle disregards your light scolding, draping his arm over your shoulders nonchalantly. chenle was naturally a touchy person, even when you guys were little, so you were used to everything at this point— the hand-holding, the back-hugging, the general invasion of space when it came to him. admittedly, you weren’t the biggest fan of skinship, but zhong chenle was always an exception. he did it so often that people thought you two dated (not that you minded).
“your brain is so underdeveloped because you never sleep.” you tease, and he immediately feigns an overdramatic look of hurt, pushing you away from him. you beamed at his comical response. his orange locks radiated in the early morning light, and the up-turned corners of his lips stretch into a shit-eating grin.
“say that to me the next time you ask for calculus help, dipshit.” he mocks, and you stand on your tip-toes to ruffle up his hair, messing up the tangerine coloured locks (although he managed to still look good).
chenle sticks his tongue out at you, putting his arm back on your shoulder the way it was before. you were all smiles at his affectionate nature. a comfortable ambience fell over the two of you, as you basked in the undisturbed sunrise and yielded to the peaceful routine of walking to school.
“so have you asked bora to be your prom date, yet?” you inquired your best friend. jang bora was a good friend of yours both since elementary.
“it’s only the first day of senior year, it’s too early to ask her. what about you? find anyone you’d wanna go with?”
“no, not really. maybe i’ll just go alone.” you complained, scratching the back of your head. it wasn’t that you didn’t want to go, but nobody in particular really caught your eye.
“c’mon, don’t be like that. i know so many guys who would love to be your date, y/n.” chenle leaned in a little closer to whisper in your ears, “and i heard a rumour that park jisung wants to ask you.” he teases you with his gummy grin, a sparkle in his eye meant only for you.
“i don’t think so, chenle.” you shake off his mischievous laughter, holding back a smile of your own. “i think he’s more interested in you than me.” you add subconsciously.
“hey, if it makes you feel any better, you can be my date if bora rejects me. deal?”
“wow, chenle, i just love being your second choice.” you sardonically joke.
it was early autumn, and the typically mediocre scenery of your neighborhood seemed almost picturesque today. the muted orange hues of the fallen leaves perfectly complimented chenle’s bright ginger hair, a byproduct of some mindless bet he lost during summer. you swore that orange hair would look revolting on anyone; but he was zhong chenle, and zhong chenle looked good in everything. you still recalled the self-satisfied cackles chenle made at your widened eyes, because what the hell, chenle? how do you look that good with orange hair?
morning walks with chenle were always a safe haven for you two. all pressures to be considered ‘popular’ or ‘cool’ were reserved for the rest of the day, with other schoolmates and friends, but never with eachother. you liked starting your days off with him, opting to simply enjoy eachother’s presence rather than bombarding eachother with too much talk and mental stimulation at such an early hour. it was in these moments that you two could be at peace with yourselves.
you sigh in contentment at the foreign breeze, recognizing the first sign of autumn. to you, the messy escapades of summer— driving around in chenle’s car during the ungodliest of hours, blasting 80s rock music with the windows down so that the wind would seep into your hair— these events seemed so distant and long-gone. an image of two teenagers huddled haphazardly under a thick blanket, a twitch streamer on the laptop being the only source of light, chewing on shitty leftover pizza as you two struggled to stay awake—these were memories of a hazy dream you’d try so hard to remember. recollections of sandy flip-flops, overly competitive volleyball games, and cloud-watching at the beach, with chenle’s orange head in your lap as he dreamt lazily, airpods in his ears and sunscreen on his nose. these all were snapshots frozen in time. a time that felt lightyears away from the present, a time you’d try so hard to hold onto.
because now, it was the first day of senior year, and everything would be changing. the hustle and bustle of ap classes, sports games, student council, part-time jobs, and the pretense of a social life always kept both you and chenle on your feet. nothing would ever be the same in a few months, as the never-ending questions about university would loom over everyone, the topics of scholarships and SATs and moving away constantly being thrown around. it was all so overwhelming, so burdensome. one thing you knew for sure, though, was that your friendship with chenle wouldn’t falter, and you found solace in that alone.
you were zhong chenle’s best friend since second grade — he was intelligent, charismatic, well-rounded, and widely popular towards the entirety of the school. he assumed the role of student council treasurer, the soccer team’s infamous right midfielder, and subject to much talk amongst the females in your highschool. but with you, he was just zhong chenle, the sweet boy who moved in two doors down from you when you were 9. there was no facade your eyes couldn’t see past.
“hey, y/n?” chenle begins, and you glance up at him next to you, peering through your eyelashes. “can i ask you, like, a serious question?” you nod at your best friend, caught off gaurd by the sudden question.
“does the future ever scare you?” he ponders nervously. you pause in your steps, thinking of the right words to say. chenle looks at his feet, avoiding your eye contact.
“well, whether we like it or not, the future is going to happen, right? and i don’t think there’s any point in fearing the inevitable. the best we can do is try adjust to the changes and enjoy the ride.” you admit, honestly. and if you were anyone else, chenle might’ve laughed at the cheesy answer, might’ve made a joke about how you made everything too serious and tried to lighten the situation. but it was you, and he could trust you with anything.
“but y/n. everything is going to change in a few months. there’s final exams, graduation, and prom. but after that, it’s all just a jumble of ambiguous what-ifs. nothing is assured anymore. i never told you this, but i might have to move away for my soccer scholarship. i’ve never lived away from home and i don’t... i don’t think i can handle it. it’s too much all at once.”
his sudden rant of emotion was laced with anxiety and stress. you instinctively take his larger hand into yours, feeling how shaky and clammy they had become. you knew it took a lot out of him to finally admit those words to you.
“i know how you feel, chenle. but you’re strong. you’ve handled everything life has thrown at you, every single time. you can handle this, too.”
“but— but what if i never come back? the thought of losing everything and everyone scares me, so much.... i can’t imagine my life without you in it.”
his anxious words drifted into the autumn wind, ringing through your mind like a mantra. zhong chenle constantly tried so hard to be perceived as perfect and flawless to the whole world, that sometimes it was shocking when he let his walls come down to you. you don’t respond at first, not sure what to say to his vulnerable confession; so you don’t respond immediately, and instead, you took his face into your hands and stared him in the eyes, feeling the warmth and softness of his skin. you hold out your arms and wrap them around his taller frame, saying nothing for a few moments. you two were silent during this intimate time. when you pulled back, his surprised eyes were filled with tears.
“i know you, zhong chenle. you will get through this. and plus, i’ll never leave your side. it’s always going to be you and me, ok? wherever you go.” you assure him, beaming optimistically. and you meant every word.
he blinked away the tears and laughed, “thank you, y/n, for being my best friend. thank you for staying with me all these years... i love you.” his words left you taken aback. in all your years of friendship, chenle never told you he loved you. you wiped his tears away with your sleeve and laughed at his sad expression.
“awww, i love you too, you dummy. you know that right? now stop crying, you look like a baby.”
chenle snakes his arms around your waist and pinches your sides, sending a tickle jolting up your body. you slap his forearm as he chortles jubilantly in response.
“ow! nevermind, i take it back. i totally hate you.” you mock.
(you love him. very, very much).
he holds your hand all the way to school, and you know that wherever life brought you two in the following months, despite the anxious discussions on university and scholarships and moving away, zhong chenle would always be yours.

everything i don’t know
on wattpad
CHAPTER 7:
“No, she’s acting weird lately, I don’t think the rumors worked…”
“It has to work, we can’t let her do her things, and sometimes she’ll have to work with us. The problem is her behavior of spoiled rotten little girl. We can’t let her starts to stick her nose into our business, not now, we’re so close and she doesn’t give a shit about what we’re doing. She’ll know when the time will comes.”
“Don’t worry, she’s not gonna mess everything up. She’s not confident enough to face up to you.”
Are they talking about me? I stay where I am and continue to listen to them with attention, stuck against the living room wall. Are they fucking talking behind my back about me, and just put me down like it was normal. And after my Mom’s gonna coming to my room and proposes to go shopping together… bullshit.
“I’m not sure about this anymore, look what she did at the Cameron’s, we can’t continue to go to this kind of events with her.” My Dad seems to contain his anger inside.
Is he that mad at me? What did I do like, I apologized for the Cameron’s… I decide to walk in as if nothing had happened, just to see their reaction. Are they gonna argue or be kind…
“Sweetie, how’s it going?”
“Good.” I try to act normal, but it’s rather delicate when I see how they lie to me. That’s disgusting. “What were you doing?” Asks my Mom to break the silence, as I get some cookies and an apple. “Some work. Not gonna disturb you for too long, I’m just getting these.” I show us what I’m taking and give them a faint smile that burns my lips before coming back to my room.
So on top of being hypocrites with the other Kooks, they’re also hypocrites with their own family. Great, I’ve such a good entourage... I climb up the stairs and lock my door before jumping on my bed and open my laptop to keep my mind off things.
OK. If I understand well, something’s going on in this house, and they think I’m gonna mess everything up, even if I don’t know what they mean. What the hell… and since when they’re hiding things from me? And… what the hell could I do?
Maybe I just should forget it, why do I even care… I don’t have to care anymore about their problems, or anything else. As long as I managed to get out of this house secretly, I also have to play the good girl, not to be suspected to leave and enjoy. Apparently enjoy is a crime here.
Let’s call Sarah, and if never she’s with John B, I could call Kie, and, if she’s with Pope… well, I won’t call anyone.
“Heyy! What’s up babe?” Her screaming voice resonates in my ear.
“Not much.” I laugh as wincing a little. “What happen, you just destroyed my ear.”
“It’s John B’s birthday and I have a gift like, the best ever!”
“Oh, I didn’t know! What’s the gift, I wanna know!” I shout out at my turn, certainly destroying her ear.
“He kinda hates to dress up, so I bought a whole chic outfit, just to joke, and then the true gift will be revealed, it’s a new surf board and it’s awesome! I had the idea that we all could dress up and celebrate at John B’s before going on the marsh, so I give him his outfit, we celebrate and everything, and then you all arrive and I give him the surfboard, and we put music and-”
“Eh, aren’t you a little nervous? “
I laugh and don’t hear any answer form her. The silence is the only response that I got for a while so I frown as I sit up in my bed, is she OK…? “Sarah?”
“Yes, sorry I…” Her sniffing make me feel more and more worried as I completely stand up, concerned about what’s happening. “Eh, what’s wrong?” I ask with a sympathetic voice, this kind of behavior doesn’t feel like her, that’s really troubling to know her in such a state. When she starts to sob quietly I got a pang of emotion, that just makes me shake as tears come into my brown eyes.
“I don’t even know why am I crying.” Her strangled voice stop her from talking as her words become little sob. “Sarah is it serious?”
“Non, no I’m just feeling so-so nervous about today because I-I never loved someone as I love John B and I...”
“Baby, you don’t have to be nervous, you’re the best girlfriend John B could be with and he loves you I swear. Sarah I’m not tellin’ you this because you’re my best friend but, you’re my best friend and you’re gorgeous so don’t be nervous.” I wipe the lonely tear that runs on my cheek and sigh a little. “Thank you, I’m ridiculous I just don’t know how to act, I can’t describe how… I don’t know, I just love him. So much.”
“I know, you guys are so cute and he’s gonna love your gift.” We continue to talk for at least an hour and we eventually stop the call to prepare for the famous birthday of mister Routledge. I’m not sure my whole business family left the house but they’re not gonna lock me in this house today, even less now.
It’s been two weeks that I manage to get out when they left to enjoy my summer, and then I come back before they do and they don’t know anything. Moreover, I’m not sure he’s ready to come in the Cut to search me so, there’s no problem.
Lately I noticed that my parents were at home sooner than usual, so they maybe have doubts, I hear them talking a lot about me, without they know it, and they have million calls, more than before, so I don’t know whats going on but… the ambiance here is weird feel like I’m kind of excluded from all this business. It doesn’t disturb me that much but it’s like they don’t want me to know, and the little talk between my parents earlier confirm my doubts…
I have to admit I prefer to stay away from their things but something changed and I feel so… curious about all this. Curious, but scared. My Dad’s sometimes yelling at the phone like it was a matter of life and death.
Anyway, I but on a tiny bit of makeup and chose to wear a short ruffle blue dress, with thin straps and a V-neck, something pretty and comfy at the same time. Then I put my Converse that I washed a while ago and am perfume myself as someone ring the doorbell. “I’m comin’ babe!”
I go downstairs quickly with my bag full of a chiller outfit, some deodorant and food, check my face in the mirror next to the door and finally open it. My eyes wide and I step back as I discover a broad-shouldered man in front of me, all black dressed except his whit shirt under his suit. “Hum, hello?”
“Thara Abrams?”
“Yes?”
“Follow me.”
“What? No, I don’t even know you.”
“A friend of your parents, they want you to be with them.” Does he think that I’m dumb? Who the hell is this man, I never saw it in my whole life and he says that he’s a friend of my parents, really?
“And how could I be sure about what you’re saying?”
“Because they charged me to pick you up maybe?”
“Drop dead.” I shut the door in his face without him stopping me from doing it and I breath. I didn’t notice but my heartbeats are too quick to be normal, and my hands are shaking. Why am I so nervous, he’s nobody.
What if he’s right? Since when my parents send someone to pick me up like… they never did it, I don’t understand why would they do it now. I grab my phone and call my Dad to get some answers to the questions that cross my mind.
“Yes, what’s wrong?”
“Did you send someone to take me to the vineyard with you?” He sigh and doesn’t respond to my question. S it probably means that’s true. “Just follow him darling, he’s a friend.”
“‘Darling’? Really?”
“Don’t make me come and do what I say Thara.” I hang up the phone and run my fingers in my hair as a sigh escape from my lips. Like I said, there’s something wrong, that’s obvious. My phone rings and I see Sarah’s face on the screen.
“Girl who’s the man in front of your door?”
“He’s still here? Oh, fuck…”
“Who’s it?”
“I don’t know, he wants to take me to the vineyard of my father, just…” I stop to talk as an idea is emerging in my mind, and a crooked smile is drawing on my lips. “Thara?”
“Yeah, I have a plan, wait me at the police station, I’ll be there quickly.”
“Be careful girl, we don’t know this man.”
“He doesn’t look like a criminal, and moreover he doesn’t even really look like a smart-ass.” We laugh a little before hanging the phone and I breath again. I don’t even know why would it be dangerous. That’s totally OK, he’s just not ready for what I got in mind.
I re-open the door and fake a smile that he seems to see as a smile of excuse. Not a smart boy… “I’m sorry I just lost my composure. You’re well-dressed, nice suit.” I continue to smile and walk until the car to get in, next to the driving seat. He take place in front of the steering wheel. He starts the car in silence and he drives toward the vineyard. “Can we please stop to the Starbucks? I rarely get out of the house, it would be a pleasure to drink something better than water of fruit juice. But just if you’re OK.”
“Yeah, of course, but be quick please.”
“Thank you, I really appreciate. Do you know where is it?” He confusedly says no, so I change a little my plan and tell him the direction to the police station. I don’t think he’ll understand until we park before I get out of the car to run away.
Once arrived I take my bag and look at him, a grateful air on my face. “Thank you for this ride monsieur.” I open the car door and put a first foot on the ground. “It was a pleasure but I’m pretty busy, say hi to my dear daddy.”
“What, no!”
When his voice resonate in the street my feet are already running on the concrete toward the black Volvo of Sarah, parked some meters further away. She gets in the car and I do the same, out of breath and a victorious smile on my face. It feels amazing.
“Starts the car, c’mon!” We laugh and leave the police station parking to drive through some little streets that the smart-ass is not gonna know to follow us. “Thank you, you saved me.” I manage to say, short-winded. “You’re welcome. We should do this more often, it was cool!”
“Yeah, but not to much if I don’t wanna die before the end of the summer.”
“Oh” she looks at me as she slows down. your father, “I forgot about it, we never should’ve do that he’s gonna kill you… I’m sorry if you want I can-”
“No, he’s not gonna say anything, it’s OK. I’ll find something. Let’s have a good time.”
She agrees by nodding quietly her head and I raise my eyebrows. “Sarah that’s OK, my father’s not killer anyway.” I laugh and she sighs in a smile before telling me to shut up.
We arrived at John B’s and Sarah explain to me that we all arrive well-dressed, she gives him his outfit, we party and then we give him the surfboard. When she finishes talking she starts to feel some pressure.
“He’s gonna love it. Let’s go, I’m sure he can’t wait anymore to see you, and I’m also sure that the only thing he wants is you, so don’t be antsy.”
“Yeah, OK, it’s gonna be perfect.”
“Of course it is!”
We get out of the car together as the three others John B’s friends arrive, all really prepared and clean and beautiful. That’s so cool, he’s gonna love it. I don’t know John B for a long time but he’s a really cool guy, big-hearted and completely in love with my girl. And he accepted me, not like a certain blond who can’t stand me, not yet. I think it’s fro never.
We all say hello to each other, almost all, and walk to the door of the chateau. Kinda good name thought.
Sarah’s knocking at the door as we all wait, a smile on our faces. He opens the door, bleary-eyed and confused of our presence. Is eyebrows are frowning and his shoulders raising as a yawn escape from his mouth. “Happy birthday!” We all shout out, and Pope and JJ are jumping on him to piss him of gently.
They push him on the bed to crush him while laughing, and the girls and I are just… present? Yeah, we’re not really useful for the moment.
“Guys c’mon, get off!”
“Happy birthday old man!” JJ yell before tousle the brown hair of his best friend. Once they finish to tease John B, they all stand up and we look at them. They’re kids. They’ll be kids until the end of their life. “Thank girls, that’s really, hum, nice.”
He steps toward Sarah and the smile on her face widen. They kiss so softly that it adds something romantic in this non-romantic ambiance, before a pillow hits John B’s head and stop them. Kiara and I just burst out laughing as the face of the old man raise his face. I laugh so much that my abs hurt, then Sarah gives him his outfit.
He put it on and come back, her eyebrows raised. “Dude I never saw you prepared and you decide to do it for my birthday, what a gift bro.” He pats JJ’s shoulder and put his other arm behind Pope’s back.
We go take the cake in the car with Sarah and come back as we all starts to sing the happy birthday song. John B’s eyes are sparkling and when my phone suddenly ring in my bag a bad feeling capture me and I wince as they all look at me, singing.
“Fuck I’m so sorry… I ruin everything…”
The desire to leave this room and just go away is completely present in me, and I don’t even know why. Something like this can happen to everyone one but, I already struggle a lot to prove that it’s not because I’m a ‘kook’ that I can’t be a good person, even if they don’t always seem convinced and it makes me so nervous, so ruining everything makes me feel like shit.
I grab my phone and get out of the house not to disturb even more the celebration and see my father’s face on my screen. “Fuck… I sigh and pick up. Hi, Dad… what’s u-”
“Thara what’s going on in your head!” He yells so loud that I can move my phone a little away. “Where are you and… Are you thinking about your acts or are you just disobeying to everything I told you to do, because this little game is over, you come back home now.”
“No, Dad not now please it’s important and-”
“I don’t care!” His deep voice make me shiver and I grit my teeth, upset but scared as fuck. “Let me just today I swear I won’t disobey again please let me today and I-”
“Because you think that I believe you? Are you that much naive?”
My heart’s kind of… breaking like, in a million pieces when his words resonate in an echo in my head. Some tears run automatically on my cheeks as I try to stop them. “How do…” my strangled voice prevent me from saying anything more and the silence is the only noise that we can hear.
“Thara you come back home now and we’ll talk about it tonight. And don’t think you’ll ever get out of this house again. How can you be that ridiculous, do you think I didn’t notice your new behavior of perfect little girl?”
Tears can’t stop to run my cheeks and my face is soon sinking into tears as my heart’s almost dying when his insults come one after on, moving me so much that my body shakes a little. “Oh, you’re crying? Don’t think that I care, you can’t just play the rebel and then crap out like a coward. See you tonight at home, Alyssa’s at home to see if you come back.”
He hangs up the phone before I answer anything, but anyway I don’t think I have the strength to… What is wrong with him…
I stay here for a while and look around to see if I can sit somewhere and not totally ruin the party. It’s supposed to be the best day of the year for one of them so I’m not destroying everything Sarah prepared for him. I walk toward a tree and sit in front of the water, in a silence broke by my sniffle.
My tears are flooding my face and I can’t stop to wipe my eyes if I want to see something. His words are in repeat in my mind, I just can’t stand these things that just got out of his mouth so naturally, to talk about me.
I feel like these are the words he never could told me before, so he took advantage of the situation to hurl me insults and prove me that I’m nothing.
I feel like I’ve never been nothing.

Epic Win: From trash to treasure
Ok kiddos, get ready for a great success story from yours truly!
So my university has a swap room in the basement, where all unwanted/broken/abandoned things go and it’s basically a big free-for-all for anyone in the building who wants it.
I pop in the swap room from time to time, mostly because it’s like free shopping and I like to browse (you know itttt). The other day I was walking by and noticed two iMacs sitting down there. Usually any computer that enters the swap is either ancient or broken beyond repair, but nevertheless I checked it out. One computer looked completely fine but had a note that said “graphics card broken” and the other had the screen separated from the body and was hanging by a single cord (SO sad). I decided to bring them both upstairs, plug them in and assess the damage.
Multiple co-workers passed by my desk and told me nothing would probably come of this. They didn’t even have power cords and one of them clearly had been dropped (hence, the screen coming detached). I just have always felt strongly about being curious and not jumping to conclusions. Why judge something hopeless without even trying? So I just ignored them and did it anyways ;)
The first computer (with the screen) turned on just fine (take that, haters!), but I could only enter as a guest and the child-lock settings were on. After googling a bit, I figured out how to hack my way in and create a new admin account for myself (hollaaaaa). Haven’t had any issues with the graphics card, and it actually has a decent amount of power/memory! Much more than my Macbook laptop!
To my surprise, the second computer with the hanging screen actually powered on, although there was no display (surprise, surprise). At this point, my hovering co-workers told me to not get my hopes up, because there was no WAY the second one was salvageable. I figured at this point, they were probably just a little jealous, since either way I was getting a free desktop out of this. Nevertheless, I’m a curious gal, so I was going to do it regardless of their opinions ;)
Since I could see all the internal components of the computer (thank you, detached screen), I was able to determine that a display cable had come off of the motherboard. When I re-attached it, voilà, the computer displayed a picture! The hard drive was completely wiped (it had also come unplugged), but I learned how to unlock the drive and re-install the OSX from the internet (thank you, google!). I secured the display with some packing tape, and just like that, I had another iMac ready to go!
Turns out, this second Mac was newer than the other one, had no reported graphics card issues, and since the screen was detached, it would be pretty easy to install more memory and an SSD in place of the old hard drive, so I decided to claim it for myself and I asked my PI if I could buy the parts to do the upgrade. He agreed! Once it’s done, it’s going to be a great desktop computer :) Additionally, some other lucky person in the lab can claim the first one for themselves.
Anyways, two main lessons learned here today:
1. NEVER judge a swap by it’s cover. It could be a hidden gem ;)
2. When it comes to tech (and so many other things), people always think they know better than you (especially when you’re a woman in a male dominated field). If you want to try something and are being told not to bother because it’s not possible, just say, “Thanks for the input, but I’m going to try it anyways.” (or just nod until they leave and then do it after they’re gone!). Don’t let someone else tell you what can and cannot be done. It’s perfectly fine if you fail, but the important thing is trying it out and coming to the conclusion yourself! At the very least, you’ll learn things along the way :)

Both sides now
A Clint/Laura angsty sickfic.
_____
Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way
--Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now
_____
It takes Clint an extra 20 minutes to detour to CVS and pick up cold medicine. He walks down the aisle in front of the pharmacy and grabs every box and bottle that looks enticing, stacking them between his forearm and his chest like a misplaced Jenga tower. It wobbles dangerously when he bends his knees. Who thought it was a good idea to put the lotion tissues on the bottom shelf?
He admits it’s worth it to pay extra for premium Kleenex and maybe save his already-raw nose a bit of torture. He should save himself the torture of trying to balance his load, too, but using a shopping basket is a different kind of defeat. One of the packages of pills falls to the ground as he straightens up, but Clint’s head is spinning. He doesn’t feel like figuring out what to set down in order to retrieve it. He probably doesn’t need Benadryl anyway.
He leaves it in the middle of the aisle and dumps his purchases on the checkout counter, then wipes his dripping nose on his sleeve as he reaches for his wallet.
“Can I help you find anything else today, sir?” the cashier says in a monotone.
Clint’s fever has reduced his brain to the speed of an outdated laptop running a security scan. He blinks at the wall of alcohol and tobacco products behind the register. He wouldn’t mind a bottle of Crown, something to put him to sleep that doesn’t taste like artificial cherries.
But it’s one in the morning and he’s still grimy from the mission and dressed in the old sweats he throws on when he doesn’t bother to shower before hitting the highway for the commute back home. And he’s probably already buying two or three things that contain codeine. No need to arouse suspicion.
“That’ll be $35.15, man.” The kid’s high as fuck, and Clint probably could’ve gotten away with half the liquor cabinet and not so much as an ID check. But he’s missed his opportunity. His mind finds a new state of awareness, realizing time is dragging and hating it, but still missing power to change course. So he just hands over his credit card and tries not to gag on his own snot.
Clint slides into the car, trying to get comfortable in his seat. He thinks about drugging up then and there, but he still has a ways to drive. He doesn’t trust himself to read the fine print and figure out what causes drowsiness and what doesn’t. And he neglected to buy anything to drink. His throat’s too swollen to dry-swallow pills, and his taste buds too sensitive for liquid medication without a chaser. Maybe he should’ve bought the Crown after all.
It isn’t till five minutes later when he’s back on the highway that the thought really sinks in, and Clint feels stupid again. His body aches something fierce, and the seat bites into his spine. He just wants to lie down. Maybe shower first. But he’s not sure he feels up to it, and Laura will probably have given up on him and gone to sleep.
He glances at the clock. It’s almost half an hour after he said he’d be home. She drinks wine and watches sitcoms for a couple hours after the kids are in bed. When Clint’s home, they do it together, working their way through Seinfeld and Cheers and Friends, then going back to re-watch their favorites. Sometimes Laura giggles at the wrong time, engrossed in text conversations with Nat. Sometimes Clint plays Nintendo. Lately the iPad set up on the bed between them has been running through the queue automatically, neither of them looking up when the next episode starts.
Laura texts Nat when Clint’s not home, too. She used to text Clint, but now he only gets responses. She doesn’t reach out first anymore. Clint only gets his wife’s jokes and goofy stories when he catches a grinning Nat checking her phone under the table in the boardroom and asks what’s so funny.
Clint stops at the red light at the bottom of the off ramp and digs his phone out of his pocket. Laura’s last message is still on his lock screen. He’d read it, but never opened it. So maybe he’s just as guilty. But it doesn’t take much effort to read and comprehend “K.”
The light turns green, and Clint drops his phone in his lap. He repeats the word over in his head, trying on different inflections and emotions. It’s not even a word. Just a letter. Is it any better with disappointment? Resignation? Sadness?
It has to be one of those. Clint doesn’t know for sure, but he knows his wife well enough to tell an acknowledgement from something else. If she had on a lace bra and expensive perfume, she’d have added a smiley face. If she was digging in the cupboard for chicken noodle soup, she’d have added a question mark.
But just a period? That’s I have to be up in under six hours to get the kids to school. And you’re late. Again.
Clint’s stomach turns with guilt. Pinpricks of sweat break out over his forehead, and all emotions are placed on hold for more physical feelings. He’s a mile from the house and abjectly against pulling over. But it’s already clear he’s not winning anything tonight.
He makes it halfway up the bumpy driveway before the gag hanging in his throat becomes more than just an urge. Clint throws the car in park and opens his door, hanging over the gravel to spit up mucous that tastes like bile.
It’s just nauseous sputtering, the kind that comes from problems with his head and throat, not with his stomach. It’s a useful excuse when, say, the kids still end up at school despite the mess in the backseat of the car. But for Clint, it’s another failure. He can’t even throw up properly. There’s no sense of relief when he’s finished.
He tears open the box of tissues to wipe his mouth and blow his nose, then he collects the loot from the drug store and trudges up toward the house. It’s a small bright point that he didn’t bring up much; Clint doubt’s he’d be able to see a puddle of vomit on the uneven ground in the dark.
The front door is unlocked, which means Laura hasn’t turned in yet after all. Clint wants to sing her praises. He doesn’t realize how much of a hassle it is to fumble keys with cold, shaky fingers until he suddenly doesn’t have to do it. Maybe he does have enough energy left in his drained batteries to shower before he passes out.
Clint toes off his shoes and kicks them roughly in line with the row of boots and sneakers beneath the coat hooks. He shuffles into the kitchen and grabs the first water bottle he sees in the door of the fridge, not caring that it’s pink and covered in butterflies. Water’s water. They have a dishwasher to kill the germs before he gives it back to Lila. Clint takes a sip as he heads down the hall.
The lamp is on in the master bedroom. A pale yellow glow feeds out into the hallway. They don’t keep the light on when they watch TV, but the fact doesn’t exactly compute.
Laura sits in bed, glasses perched on her nose, stitching a patch onto the knee of Cooper’s jeans. Clint drops the plastic CVS bag on top of the comforter, and Laura looks up at him.
“Hey,” she says. She makes two more neat stitches, then ties off her thread and snips it. She folds the jeans and arranges her supplies neatly on top of them on the bedside table.
Clint watches her, stuck on the carefulness of her movement, the set of her mouth. She keeps the house running with a mix of focus and fun. She rolls with the punches. She only retreats into this mode of somber productivity when things aren’t right with her. Or more accurately, around her. Clint’s having difficulty separating tiredness from truth, but he can’t think of a single time Laura’s fucked up.
He needs to ask if she’s ok. Not that it makes much sense, because Clint’s beginning to feel like he could throw up again while his wife seems physically fine, just pissed. But unlike Laura, Clint makes bad choices a lot. Especially today. So he just says, “Hey,” back. Then he coughs. Pitifully.
“I was thinking we should talk.” Laura folds her hands in her lap. She’s an expert at ripping off Band-Aids, even when a fever makes the pain worse. “About you never being home anymore. But, you know.” She laughs humorlessly. “You’re never home anymore.”
“Yeah, hon,” Clint sighs. “I’m really sorry.” He doesn’t know what else he can say. Any promise to do better won’t hold water. His schedule won’t change unless he has a serious talk with his superiors. Which he can do. Maybe. Eventually. But it doesn’t solve the problem of tonight.
Clint’s head throbs. He dumps the array of medications out over the foot of the bed and searches out the strongest, longest-lasting thing. Something good for headaches and stomachaches and snotty noses and being a bad husband.
He should’ve asked if Laura was ok, kept up the pattern of initiation-response. Maybe she would’ve lied and said she was fine, and he’d be that much closer to sleeping it off.
Laura’s not ok. She’s already made that clear. But Clint’s not ok either. He gets that she’s not wild about him right now. He wants more than acknowledgement, though. Not an argument, not exclamation points. Happiness is too far in the other direction. But perhaps a question mark? Is it too much to crave a little care?
Clint picks up the box of Tylenol PM and squints at the directions on the back. His throat feels tight, either preparing to dry heave or anticipating the ordeal of swallowing pills. He takes a small sip of water, then tries to insert his fingernail under the sharp flap on the top of the box. “Sorry,” he murmurs again. “Can we…talk about it later?”
“When, Clint?” Laura shakes her head. “I’m gonna take the kids to school tomorrow, and you’re gonna sleep in, then I’ll get back and have an hour to feed you and start your laundry before you have to go back and have a debrief or a board meeting or supervise training or whatever it is you do out there…”
“I’ll find time. I’ll get up with you.” But he won’t. Clint backtracks. “I’ll call in sick tomorrow.” That’s more like it.
“What if you get called for a mission?” Laura’s volume rises. She’s not shouting, but she wants to be sure Clint hears her. “What if you take a bullet while you’re saving the world, and you realize the last time you sat at the table with your kids was over two weeks ago?”
Clint lets out a slow breath. His vision shimmers around the edges. He blinks hard, but the apparition doesn’t fade. He clutches the water bottle and the box of Tylenol together as he slowly turns and sits on the edge of the mattress.
“Honey.” Clint looks down at the carpet, hoping a singular visual focus will keep disaster from happening. Or not happening. If he barfs, maybe Laura will turn her sympathy back on. He fights a hiccup. “Can we not do this right now? Please?”
“You’ve been putting this off. Maybe you don’t realize it, but you have.” The bed shifts as Laura stands up. “You can’t do that, Clint.”
“I know, babe. I hear you.” He can’t hold down the hiccup this time. Clint’s hands are full, so he presses his wrist over his mouth. A drip shivering at the end of his nose soaks into his sleeve. “I just…I can’t right now. I really can’t.”
There’s a beat of silence. Then Laura sighs, the sound impossibly drawn out. But maybe Clint’s just losing track of time again.
The ends of Laura’s hair twitch into Clint’s peripheral vision as she kneels in front of him. “Didn’t you get a flu shot?” she asks. There’s still irritation in her voice, but its intensity has lessened.
“Yeah.” Clint swallows hard. “I don’t know what this is.” He hiccups again.
“Please don’t throw up in here. We have kids for that.” Now a hint of a smile.
“No, I’m not…” Clint breathes down the sick feeling, willing his headache to go back to just a throb. He can handle that. “I already did. Well, kinda…”
“In the car?” Laura wrinkles her nose. “I don’t wanna know.”
“Hm.” Clint’s not eager to retell it anyway.
“Looks like you really bought out the pharmacy.” Laura takes the box of pills from Clint’s hand. “But I’m gonna have to dose it for you, aren’t I?”
“Yeah, I’m…” Clint lifts his head and fixes his glassy eyes on hers. “A hopeless mess. You know?”
Laura makes quick work of the blister pack and drops two tablets into Clint’s palm. “Yeah. You kind of are.” She leans in to kiss his forehead. “You’re really cooking, too.”
“I really don’t feel good,” Clint admits. “But…I’m sorry, babe.”
“We’ll talk,” Laura says. “When you’re patched up a little. You really planning on a sick day tomorrow?”
Clint nods. He tosses back the pills and chases them with a draught of water, triple-swallowing to make sure they go down.
“Good. You need it.”
“Yeah,” Clint says. “We both do,”

The weather today is one that feels like a kiss of summer rather than the usual fiery heat of June. The sun is perched high up in the sky, blocked by white fluffy clouds shielding you from the harsh rays. There's a light breeze that carries the ends of your hair, making it casually sway from side to side. You're grateful the day isn't too hot because you would've suffered from the ripped jeans you're wearing now. A gush of wind blows through the holes of your jeans and flutters your plain red t-shirt, it's refreshing.
You walk down the streets of your small town and take in the summer air as you finally have some free time over break. You've never seen much of your town, having to drive to school then right back home to do homework, or stay in school for club meetings.
Small dainty shops are lined up side by side, all serving different purposes ranging from flower shops to hardware stores. You didn't even know your town had many of these shops. Curious, you walk into some of the stores, checking out what they're selling.
After a few window shopping adventures, you stop in front of a little shop that caught your eye. The outside is painted a warm beige with outlines of dark brown. The corners have intricate and elaborate designs, swirling towards the name of the shop: Lee's Bakery, in golden cursive writing.
Thinking that you can go for something to eat as of now, you reach for the handle and pull back. The scent of warm bread and sweet creams immediately draws you in, making your mouth water a bit.
Inside the bakery houses only a few of people, a college student off to the corner with the table covered with her laptop and textbooks, a couple to the other end who are chatting quietly, and a mother with her toddler, sharing a slice of chocolate cake.
An old man, around his 40s or 50s, greets you with a, "Welcome to Lee's Bakery."
You enjoy the aura the bakery gives off, it's warm and familiar, even if you've never visited this shop before.
Walking further in, you take a seat at the counter where the old man is wiping dry a few mugs.
"Would you like to order now?" the man asks, looking up from his glasses that are perched up on the tip of his nose.
"Not yet but can I have a menu please," you ask politely. The man sets down the mug and pulls a small laminated menu from the counter and slide it towards you. You thank him while picking it up to examine it. There's a variety of pastries and drinks listed in a simplistic manner.
《 LEE'S BAKERY  》ets. 1991

cappucino.............................$4.00

*a cup of water is free
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
pastries:

slice of cake.........................$5.00
muffin (berry, choco)............$2.75
crossiant..............................$4.00

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
You place the menu down and look up for the old man to order, but in his place is a much younger boy, probably around your age. He's wiping the counter with a rag. His black hair falls in front of his eyes as he works, he flips it away. From the angle you see him, the boy looks irritated, maybe even mad, as he's cleaning around the drink machines.
"Excuse me?" you say, waving your hand slowly to get the boy's attention. He glances up from his task at the counter to meet with your eyes, his eyebrows slightly furrowed.
"Can I get a vanilla cupcake with a hot chocolate?" you order with a small smile. The boy wipes his hands on the front of his beige apron before nodding. You watch him as he quickly washes his hands at the back sink and starts making the hot chocolate, clicking some buttons on a machine. The boy nonchalantly pours in water from a picture into the top of the machine, closing the top, and waits for it to warm up.
You lean over the counter, with your head leaning on one of your hands.
"What's your name?" you ask out of the blue. The boy looks back at you and licks his lips, before answering.
"Jeno, Lee Jeno."
"Oh! Are you related to the man who works here?" you question, since they have the same last names.
"Yeah, he's my dad."
"That's cool that he owns a cute bakery that you work in."
Jeno mumbles someone under his breath, though you don't quite hear it clearly. A short silence flies by as the softly played cafe music fills the air.
"How long have you worked here?" you continue to ask. A beep signals that the water is ready and Jeno adds in the cocoa powder.
"All my life basically..." he answers looking down at his sneakers. You tilt your head to the side in confusion, it doesn't seem like Jeno is happy working here.
"Do you not enjoy working here with your family?"
"No, no. It's not that," he begins to say, leaning on the counter on one side. "It just gets really boring here, especially because not a lot of people come in. And my dad won't let me go on my phone so I don't have much to do a lot of times."
You nod, understanding his situation.
"Well, my name is Y/N by the way," you introduce yourself, reaching a hand out. He stares at your out-stretched hand then takes it in his. The size difference causes you to chuckle a bit.
"Nice you meet you, Y/N," he says, seeming to test out the sound of your name. He smiles at it, causing his eyes to slim into two crescents. Your ears grow warm at his cute smile.
There's another beep letting Jeno know the hot chocolate is done. He pulls out a beige mug and sets it under the machine, pressing a couple buttons, before the steaming brown liquid pours out of an opening into the mug. It stops just below the rim.
Jeno grabs ahold of the mug, placing it on a matching plate.
"Do you want marshmallows in it?" he asks while carefully handing you the drink over the counter, not wanting to spill it on you.
"Please!" you respond a bit too quickly. He softly laughs before plopping a spoonful of mini marshmallows in your drink. They float around on top, some already starting to melt.
"Be careful, it's still really hot," Jeno warns. "I'll go prepare your cupcake in the kitchen. Be right back."
He's cute, you think to yourself with a shy smile.
Soon, Jeno comes back with a vanilla cupcake on a small plate, a spoon also provided on the plate.
"Enjoy," he says, setting it down. You look at the sweet in front of you. It has white cream swirled on top with some marshmallows pushed in. You look up at Jeno, who has a matching shy smile.
"Since it seems light you like marshmallows," he explains, cheeks slightly tinted pink. You carve a piece out with your spoon and taste it. The sweetness coats your tongue, and you respond with a "mmm."
"Did you make this?" you ask, taking another bite. Jeno scratches the back of his neck, peering to his left.
"Yeah, I bake most of the pastries. My dad handles the profit and management and my mom cleans and decorates."
You look around at the little trinkets and painting hung symmetrically around the room.
"She's an artist, my mom. She painted every painting in here," Jeno brags for his mother with a proud smile. Your mouth forms an 'o' as you study the decorations once more. They are all done with oil paints, some of flowers or fruits, and others of people and scenery.
"They're beautiful! Tell her that she's really talented, though she probably knows," you laugh, continuing to feed yourself bites of the cupcake.
"If you come back again...you might be able to meet her and tell her yourself," Jeno offers after a hesitant cough. His arm returns to the back of his neck.
"I would love to come back soon."
Jeno's face lights up at your reply with his signature eye smile. You guess he's excited that he finally has someone to talk to during his shifts in the bakery. So you decide to continue trying to get to know Jeno.
Hour pass as you and Jeno share more about each other. You converse about your preferences and favorite things while Jeno does the same. You learn that Jeno is home-schooled by his parents, taking classes online. Because of this, he doesn't have many friends and not many people visit the bakery, especially ones around his age.
"Well, you have me now," you respond with a bright smile.
After that, each day for the rest of Summer break, you visit the bakery to see Jeno. The both of you talk more and become close friends, even exchanging numbers one visit.
The end of Summer vacation rolls around, which means you have to go back to school. Though for the most part of August and September, you still come to the bakery to hang out with Jeno. However, once your school work starts to pile up, you have no choice but to stay home or in school to do them.
One Thursday afternoon, when the school bell has just rung, you jog quickly to the library of your school. You have to meet up with your classmates for a group project. Being the first one to arrive, you take a seat at one of the big tables, pulling out your textbooks and project necessities.
A ding sounds from your phone as the librarian gives you a stern look. You bow your head a few times before switching your phone to silent.
The notification on the lock screen displays Jeno's name and a couple messages.

A smile spreads across your face, as your friends finally arrive and take their seats around the table.
"What're you smiling at Y/N?" one of them, Haechan, asks with suggestive eyes and wiggly eyebrows.
"Nothing," you reply with a roll of your eyes. "Let's just get this project over with, I have somewhere to go afterward."
Almost three hours fly by as your group finishes most of the collaborative work, now leaving all 4 of you with individual work to do at home.
You quickly pack everything up, throwing all of your papers and books into your backpack without care. Shouting a quick goodbye and getting another strict look from the librarian, you race to the bakery, the route permanently engraved into your brain. The cool air fills up your lungs, stinging when you inhale.
The hanging sign of Jeno’s bakery comes into sight as you slow your pace, trying to catch your breath. You reach the door handle just as someone on the other side pulls it open. Slightly panting, you come face to face with Jeno, who is looking god-like in just casual black jeans and a white sweatshirt. A large jacket hangs on his free arm.
“Jeno,” you gasp, startled by the situation.
“Y/N! You made it! I was just going to go walk around the nature trail nearby because I’m on my break,” Jeno says, stepping out of the shop and closes the door. The chilly air is the total opposite compared to the weather on the day you first met Jeno. He slips his jacket on, pulling the sleeves over his hands to keep them warm.
“Can I come?” you ask, stepping back so Jeno has enough room to exit the entry way.
“Of course silly.”
The both of you start walking down the street towards the sunset where a luscious nature walk is located in a large park. The November winds blow your long winter coat back, exposing your bare legs. You mentally curse to yourself for not wearing leggings under your school uniform skirt. Unconsciously, you scoot closer to Jeno for warmth.
“How’s school?” he makes small talk while looking down at you beside him.
“It’s alright, I mean my teachers are starting to assign of a lot of work because the semester is almost over and midterms are coming up. That’s why I haven’t been able to come visit you for a while. I don’t even remember how long it’s been since I’ve seen you-,” you explain but gets cut off by Jeno.
“38 days.”
“What?” You look up at him, who is still staring down at you.
“It’s been 38 days… since you’ve last visited,” he says with a small smile. You nod with an inaudible “ohhh.” He’s kept count, you inwardly say, that’s adorable.
“That’s a long time, wow. I didn’t think it’s been that long,” you laugh while saying. You’ve been so caught up with school that time just flies by so quickly before you realize it.
“Yeah…It’s been super boring without you in there. I’ve resorted to reorganizing all of the mugs by size and color. There’s a lot of mugs in our cabinets if you didn’t know.”
“Aww Jeno, did you miss me that much,” you smile while knocking into him with your shoulder teasingly, causing Jeno to stumble away. He shuffles back to you, a little closer now.
“Yes, in fact I did miss you, a lot actually,” Jeno responds, looking down at his shoes and watching one step in front of the other. Unexpectedly, your heart flutters rapidly and you can feel the back of your neck warming up as well as the sides of your face. Somehow, the smile stretched upon your face can’t seem to stop.
“Well, I miss you too Jeno, more than you’ve missed me,” you say, linking your arms with his. Jeno’s head snaps towards your face and then to your now linked arms. He shakes his head before tugging his arm towards himself, which causes you to step closer.
“I don’t think that’s possible. I reorganized like 70 mugs Y/N. It was pointless but I did it anyway,” Jeno shoots back.
Your smile somehow grows bigger.

Angst/Fluff
Warnings: Mentions of depression, low mood.
Curled up in a blanket is your safe haven.
You don’t feel like venturing out into the real world today, not when you’ve felt close to tears for the last week. Nothing is wrong in particular but when you’re suffering from depression it’s never that clear-cut. Generally, you have good days and you’ve fought hard to reach a place where you can live mostly happy.
You’ve been through the therapies and tested medications until you found what works for you. You’re mostly able to focus on all the good things you have to appreciate in life.
Today isn’t one of those days. Today you feel like it would be better if you never existed. Being awake and present is exhausting. You make an instant decision and reach for your phone to cancel the plans you had for the day. You were going to let yourself rest, sleep and hope tomorrow will feel a little better.
You know from many years of trial and error that it’s ok to feel sad and take a day for yourself. Sometimes forcing interaction isn’t always the best thing for you in your personal war with mental health.
Losing one day of the battle won’t affect the long-term outcome. You need to recharge to pick yourself up and enjoy things again and eventually you’ll get there.
You plan to only leave your bed to use the bathroom and get water. Your favourite duck feather duvet hugging your body and providing comfort as you drift in and out of consciousness watching funny dog compilations on youtube to distract your mind. You keep your phone on silent to prevent yourself from overthinking since you hate bothering your friends all the time.
They love you and would do anything for you but you don’t want to seem needy or annoying, they all have busy lives and their own problems and you don’t want to burden them despite what they say. You don’t want anyone to feel the way you do…
A knock on the door startles you awake. You weren’t expecting any company. So you pause your laptop and stay silent. Hopefully, they’ll go away. You daren’t look at your phone because you don’t have the energy to explain yourself further, you just want to be alone.
The knocking stops and you relax momentarily. Then you pull the blankets over your head and groan when you hear keys jingle in the lock and someone steps in loudly calling out your name.
You should have never given him a key.
Byun Baekhyun, your best friend of 10 years and also a giant pain in the ass who doesn’t seem to have understood you cancelling the plans you had with him and your other friends.
Maybe if you hide under your duvet he’ll think no ones home and go away, but you soon find out that doesn’t work when you hear the creak of your bedroom door and he immediately snorts.
“Y/N, you aren’t being subtle...I can see your foot”.
You huff and yank your traitorous foot under the covers as you feel his body weight sink into the edge of your bed.
“Didn’t you read my text?” you mumble meekly from under the blankets.
You feel him pull the covers down enough to reveal your eyes. You stare up and your best friend tiredly as he takes in your appearance. You know your hair must be everywhere and there are bags under your eyes. You probably looked how you felt and you realise he’s figured you out when he cocks his head and frowns slightly.
“Didn’t you read the seven replies I sent you back?” he counters, eyebrow raised but eyes soft.
You shake your head in response and look away, his concern making you feel self-conscious. You don’t even know why you feel like this, Baekhyun is one of your biggest supports. He’s seen you at your worst, never judged and accepted every part of you without question.
You’d met back in high school and had instantly clicked. He was your complete opposite. Loud and friendly, dragging you along with him as he created chaos and mischief. He was actually one of the first people to notice you weren’t being yourself. You had suddenly isolated almost everyone and taken a break from college due to stress.
He was away at a different college but when he visited you for the holidays after you’d been ignoring his texts he’d seen right through the mask and facade you were trying to hold together. He had stayed up with you all night as you cried and accepted that this was something you had to get help for.
He was there when you admitted to your parents how badly you were coping and did his best to support you and help explain to them as they struggled to understand. They still don’t fully understand but at least they’re trying.
Baekhyun on the other hand dove right into the deep end, he read books and looked up articles on how to support someone struggling with depression. He never pushed you into anything you were uncomfortable with but never let you slip back to the darkness alone.
Thanks to him and your small group of close friends you managed to pick yourself up, graduate college and find a job that you enjoy. They’re there when you want to socialise and give you space when you don’t, always offering a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen.
You are brought back to the present, realising you’d spaced out when a hand reaches out to tuck some hair behind your ear, Baekhyun starts to brush your hair soothingly with his fingertips.
“It’s ok, you don't have to leave your bed. I just figured you’d want some company and a Planet Earth marathon, maybe some pizza?”.
You space out again under the comfort of his touch but as your brain slowly processes his offer you feel your eyes well up, suddenly overcome because you for a moment didn’t feel like anyone cared. You don’t know what to do with your feelings so you just sniff and nod.
A warm roughness swipes over your cheek to wipe away a stray tear and you realise its Baekhyun’s thumb. He moves and crouches down next to the bed to meet your eye level, he smiles at your warmly then taps his chin in thought.
“Do you want me to invite anyone else? I could kick always Jongdae’s butt at Mario Kart and make him throw a tantrum for your viewing pleasure” he offers playfully causing you to break your first smile of the day.
“No, I think your annoying ass is plenty of company for a day if you’re insisting on staying” you sigh.
Secretly you’re glad he’s here to keep you out of your head. It’s never exhausting being around Baekhyun, everyone thinks your crazy for how long you’ve been friends and have put up with him. I mean, they’re right and you are crazy, but Baekhyun always says he’d rather drive you crazy then let you feel like you’re going crazy.
“I guess I should get up and properly dressed so we can go buy some snacks?” you whine, gesturing to your teenage mutant ninja turtle pyjamas and stretching your arms to mentally prepare for leaving your bed, but your best friend shakes his head and drops a paper bag in your lap. Your favourite snacks spilling out the bag.
You cuddle a bag of Popchips and start to tear up again but Baekhyun waggles his finger at you.
“Why are you so surprised that I’m here with the snackage, we both know I’m the best and also the smartest, and most handsome and talented…”
Your face creases up in confusion as you watch him start to ramble off in his own self-praise but decide to let it go today. You’ll roast him another day, right now you remember that you’re hungry and remember the existence pizza.
“So extra large cheese with all the toppings” you interject, pulling out your phone from under your pillow to access the pizza delivery app. Baekhyun plops himself next to you on the bed, sitting above the covers and grabbing a spare throw from the ottoman to cover his legs.
You work in unison as he sets up the tv and you finish ordering the pizza. You realise you’re already feeling better, the distraction from someone who understands and cares about you already starting the clear the fog of your mind and as you settle into your pillows and David Attenborough's soothing voice starts to fill the room you feel calmer.
You feel safe and validated and when he asks if you want to talk you open up to him about your thoughts and feelings, he listens patiently and never interrupts. He offers you comfort and assures you things will get better with time as he wraps his arm around your shoulder and rests his chin on the top of your head.
You stay that way for the rest of the evening, even after the pizza is devoured. The warmth and the familiar smell of Baekhyun’s aftershave keeping you grounded and you look up at him appreciatively for a little while. His mouth hanging open, round wire-rim glasses sitting at the end of his nose as he slouches against your headboard engrossed in the show. Floppy honey coloured hair sitting in every direction from what you assume was the wind outside.
When he looks down at you with warm eyes and soft smile, you already know tomorrow will be better.
