SoD - Record it for the History books...and the programmers

I’m seeing on the HTTYD tag that School of Dragons is shutting down and as someone who lost a beloved MMO back in the day, my heart goes out to you all

Never played it myself, but I can appreciate that it was out there

Saying that...I’d like to share a bit about that MMO I lost, Pirates of the Caribbean Online

Because at the time I was in college and pretty must postponed everything to enjoy my last few days with that game that was a big chunk of my childhood

And while I was doing that there was this group in the server I was on who was busy documenting as much of the game as possible with the intent to revive it

Revive it they did

The Legend of Pirates Online is the PotC MMO fully recreated by the fans, for the fans, for free, with nothing but passion and blood sweat and tears behind it

They’ve actually recently figured out how to program everything so they don’t have to do stuff like quest-building and asset-building fully by hand, and in addition to all the old stuff they’ve added new stuff and improved on the old

And as one of the fandom olds with that MMO, they did it well

So. Calling out to everyone sad that School of Dragons is shutting down.

Start documenting assets.

I don’t care if it’s just screenshots of character comments or videos of dragons moving around, start doing it

Make it so that when that little dedicated group decides to bring it back from the ashes, they’ve got an easier time of it

Even if no one does, even if it takes years, document it for the history books

So much fandom and gaming history gets lost because these games were shut down with no documentation, so archive as much as you can

Just because the game is shutting down doesn’t mean the fans can’t ever bring it back

Pirates Online did it--now I pass that hope to you

For the ask game: how and when did you get into writing fanfiction? Was it a particular fandom, character… ? Any details you want to share! 😊

ohhh man...

I think I first got into writing it for LOTR - it would have been when the movies first came out. I was ten or eleven years old and created a self-insert OC who was Sauron's daughter and she rode a balrog (then later one of the winged beasts from ROTK) and somehow ended up teaming up with the Fellowship. There was a lot of drama. I think she fell in love with the Witch King of Angmar at one point. It was a blast to write - though, I don't think any of it survives online anymore. It was up on some of the old LOTR fanfic sites that didn't survive, sadly.

Someone harshed my mellow, though, as I got my first flame/really negative review which made me stop writing fic for quite a few years.

I got back into writing it in highschool with both Van Helsing and Pirates of the Caribbean. I was very committed to writing Van Helsing/Dracula and also Mr. Mercer/Lord Beckett slash. The Lord Beckett community on Livejournal, to-date, was one of the best most welcoming fan-communities that I've been in. Everyone was lovely to one another and supported each other. If there was any in-community fighting I missed it entirely. So yeah, that's what got me back in the saddle. A lot of that stuff will still be up, if the livejournal community survives.

From there I was unstoppable. Napoleon/Wellington was big in highschool and on through to university, also back into LOTR with Grima/Eomer and the unfinished Devour a Sunless Day, not to mention Yes Minister fic and a few other niche fandoms.

So yeah, the rest, as they say, is history.

Weatherby Swann had been governor of Port Royal for four years now, well-versed in the mood and timbre of his province, and as such there is simply no reason why this soiree should be as miserable as it is; Great Aunt Dorcas visiting from England is stern and rejective, he could admit, and far from his favorite of his relations, but an event in her honor need not reflect her manner. After exchanging a brief, despairing look with Elizabeth, Swann entertains the idea of calling the night early when the footman announces one Captain James Norrington, hastening in after his patrol. Norrington takes one look around the room, blanches, and promptly turns the whole night around: Swann watches in amazement as he introduces himself to Dorcas — pays homage to all the appropriate guests — picks up the flagging violinist’s instrument and plays a few bars of a rondo in suggestion, setting the quartet to the proper sort of music this time of the evening — handsomely bows to Elizabeth, gallantly invites her to dance — and shortly, all who are able have joined the next set. Bless his heart! After dinner, Swann finds Norrington nursing a glass of wine in a quiet solitary corner, flushed in the way all young people are after so much excitement, and silently raises a glass to him.
