so, you've heard shows be recommended because they had gay characters. you don't really know what they're actually about though, and don't know if they'd be something you'd be into and are worried about spoilers. here's spoiler free plot summaries of em!

The Owl House

The Owl House starts out as a typical teenage girl goes into a fantasy realm story, but with a twist. Actions have consequences. The protagonist is a girl named Luz Noceda, who was being sent to a camp to make her behave normally by her mother after causing too much trouble at school. She ends up finding a place she's always dreamed of: a fantasy world. A world where everyone's so much weirder than she is. And she thinks, maybe if I don't belong out there, maybe people will like me here. Maybe I can be special here.

It's a story about found family, propaganda, erased history, living with disability, religious trauma, and neurodivergence. It's fundamentally a show about people who's brains work differently finding each other and making a family that treats them right. Definitely my favorite of the ones on this list. It's about people who've been oppressed being pissed about it and about finding yourself again after giving up on everyone around you for so long. It's basically a show about being a minority and trying to be understood and to understand yourself in the process. It's about growing up neurodivergent and how isolating it feels and figuring yourself out. It's about repairing broken relationships and parents who fuck up. And it's just. Such a love letter to anyone who was the weird kid in school. It's sad and heartbreaking and also so hopeful, and it's wonderful.

She Ra and the Princesses Of Power

Adora was raised in the Horde since she was a baby, being fed propaganda about how cruel the princesses were. After learning how the horde actually was, though, she defects. But there's one problem. Her best friend, Catra, stays behind. Adora finds a sword that can transform her into She Ra, and might be the key to figuring out who she really is, while Catra takes her place as force captain.

It's a story about abuse, at the end of the day. Adora and Catra were stuck in a golden child and scapegoat dynamic, despite how much they care about each other. This leads to them knowing everything about each other but not understanding it. There's a fundamental disconnect between them, because both of their traumas are completely different. They have complete misconceptions about each other. Even in their initial split, they both have completely different perceptions of what's going on and why the other is upset. It's not a story about magic princesses, it's about the cycle of abuse and what makes it so complicated. Does it have flaws? Yeah. But ultimately I really really enjoy it, and when it does something right it does something RIGHT. Get through season one, it starts kids show-y but it gets very good during later s1.

Steven Universe

Steven Universe is a sins of the father story. Steven is the son of the leader of the rebel group The Crystal Gems, who's name was Rose Quartz. He navigates the confusion of being half gem and half human, as well as trying to figure out the mess of the rebellion and what his mother left behind. He's constantly in her shadow, for better or for worse.

It's a story about grief. How it impacts relationships, how it taints history, how it impacts family. It has some definite flaws, but ultimately it's about very flawed people who have lost so many people in their life trying to cope with it. Trying to handle what they lost and trying to adjust to life without them. It's about how expectations fuck a kid up and about agency and just a show about complicated relationships in general, at the end of the day. Also, it has some FANTASTIC music.

Nimona

Nimona is a story about a guy who gets framed for murder. His name is Ballister Boldheart, a commoner who hoped to become a knight. It seemed everyone was waiting to watch him fail, so it was no surprise when he was the immediate target. Heavily injured and away from the man he loves, he's left alone trying to figure out a way to prove his innocence- until a strange kid comes into his life. This kids name is Nimona, and while he is intent on proving his innocence, she gave up on being anything but a villain a long time ago.

It's about deconstructing the model minority myth, trans rage, propaganda, and with a healthy dose of "FUCK the police".

Hot take but Percy Jackson actually isn't anything like Harry Potter and the reason they're popularly compared is due to the mass mischaracterization and misenterpretation that leads to sanatization of Percy to turn him into a more standard protagonist despite the whole point his character being that he's NOT normal while Harry's is that he IS and that made him into a very bland and lowkey passive aggressive bigot that's an awful example for kids while Percy is the perfect role model.Like let's look them over.Percy:

Was born poor and never becomes rich

Is a child abuse victim with consistent trauma responses and unhealthy coping mechanisms all the way starting at The Lightning Thief

Beat up bullies as a kid,was targeted by them to begin with because he's neurodivergent and his teachers picked on him too

Has nothing but love and respect for his fellow minorities,women especially thanks to being a mama's boy with no positive older male figures in his life except Beckendorf

Is pessimistic,sardonic,anger issued,bad at socializing and gets embarrased to be overly open with his emotions but none of this turns him into a bad person but instead makes him realistic and relatable

And he's also kind,gentle,nurturing to the point of basically adopting younger demigods as his found siblings and pseudo-kids if they don't have positive adult figures in their lives already,encouraging,loyal to a literal fatal fault and has a distinctive and iconic sense of humor that never dosen't land

Didn't like Annabeth or Rachel for shallow reasons and instead for their personalities and only wasn't into Reyna because he was taken at the time and treats all three of them very nicely

Is an instigator who's driving point as our hero is taking down corrupted figures but also does activism for the lesser treated people in his world by helping out every time he gets a chance to,has one of his core trait's being that he's COMPLETELY devoid in power hunger and pretty arguably counts as an anarchist because of this

Relating to the sense of humor thing again,his whole PERSONALITY is distinctive-He's not just some fantasy protagonist,he's PERCY JACKSON.The name alone gives everybody who's read the books flashbacks to all his crazy ass shit(affectionate)and that's how you know you've got a well-written protagonist

And Percy is legitimately transfem-coded,because i've met so many trans women in the Pjo fandom and every single one of them without exception have said that she's a femme trans woman egg.This also applies to black/afrolatino folks and autistics in the fandom like me to a less near universal extent

While Harry:

Grew up middle class and then got riches out the ass when the series started

Is a very poor attempt at positive abuse survivor rep because he uses his mental health as an excuse to a huge dick with no consequences given to him afterward

Had no tormenters other than the Dursleys

A 'dosen't know better and refuses to learn' typa bigot with tons of passive aggressive remarks about girls and ableism and fatphobia thrown in too,not to mention racist moments like hating Dean for dating Ginny

Is the quintessential young male fantasy protagonist and this is exactly his problem because it makes him boring asf and we're dealing with so much fucking damage in the kids fantasy genre thanks to his musty ass

All his crushes were shallow(Only liked Cho for a pretty girljock and only noticed Ginny when she became one too and prioritizes looks and society's idea of 'coolness' on the other girls his age too like damn i wonder why he only ever saw Hermione as a sister,surely it can't be connected /s)

Never does actual justice fighting unless he's required to and don't tell me he shouldn't have needed to because this wasn't real life,it was a magics series so he should've fought evil on purpose like Percy did and so did Katniss Everdeen and the Pevensie Siblings and all the other actual good kids books protags.This genre is supposed to be a power fantasy for kids that they can be heroes too and Harry failed big time at his job just like he did at everything else

Again,he is VERY mediocre as a character but mediocrity sells and now we have a million clones of him instead of real mcs

Is part of exactly zero minorities,neither intentionally or accidentally,and that made him grow up to be a cop.Douchebag ass white straight boy Harry vs Autistic afrolatina transfemme slay Percy.No competition,Percy's punk so she'd kill Harry to earn her blue laces

AITA for letting something major happen in an RP when one person wasn't available?

It was a group rp. Everyone participating is in their 20s. Going to use B, D, F, H, and J (me) for the aliases.

The plot of the rp took place in a fantasy world with some modern elements where everyone had special powers. However, I made it a rule that the OCs had to have some flaws so that they wouldn't be overpowered. B complained that it wasn't fair to police what people did with their OCs and said that we shouldn't force people to handicap their OCs. They thought it would make the rp boring if we did that. The others said to just let B do what they wanted with their OC because they are neurodivergent and this would help them feel better.

Fast forward to the actual rp. B made their character OP. Every problem was solved in a snap because B's OC was unstoppable and could do anything. Their OC would always get the credit for saving the day since they did everything. D, F, and H started regretting allowing B to just do whatever they wanted with their OC. So they consulted with me and created a new plot device: when an eclipse happens, everyone's powers would be severely weakened and/or be harder to control. Cliché, I know.

How did B take it? By making it so that their OC was immune to that and would still be strong and have perfect control during an eclipse. So their OC just solved the problem again when no one else's OCs were able to do anything. They had their OC then talk to everyone else about "you guys wouldn't be like this if you trained." D, F, and H got annoyed by that. And honestly, I did too. It was annoying how their OC would be able to do everything.

Then one day, B said they had to do something and that they wouldn't mind if we continued rping while they were gone. So that was what we did. D suggested that everyone else fight another big bad. F and H agreed to it, so I went with it. During the fight, D's OC ends up getting critically injured and the rest of us had not done anything to intervene. Or rather, made it so that the other OCs would not be able to reach them in time. D agreed to letting this happen. The big bad was still taken down, but this time it was due to a group effort from everyone's OCs minus B's.

When B returned, they were upset because D's OC was their OC's girlfriend. Both their OCs were girls. B had their OC go on an angry rant about "None of you know how to do anything right without me, and none of you care enough to protect my girlfriend in a fight. You all chose to be selfish and look after yourselves." And that everyone else was lesphobic for letting a lesbian character almost die. But D brought up that it was their idea, and B insisted that "F, H. and J tricked you into thinking that." And then B demanded we have a do over so that they could have their OC save her girlfriend. We all voted against it because it would make the plot more interesting if one of the characters stayed injured for awhile.

Sure I know that it sounds bad to let one of the few lesbian characters get injured, but said character's owner was fine with letting it happen. So it should be fine, right?

B did not like that and called us lesphobic for doing that and had their OC jump in with an ultimate healing ability she never had before so that the injuries to D's OC would not last long. F decided to have their OC intervene and block B's OC from being able to do the healing. When B tried again, H did the same thing.

B called everyone an asshole for changing the plot without them and logged off for awhile. Part of me thinks they may be right, but admitting it to them would mean we continue the cycle from before which was boring already with B's OC solving everything.

So AITA for letting something major happen in an RP when one person wasn't available?

Hmm!! Yeah I think it would absolutely be easier to drop info about the AU in little bits at a time depending on what questions I get. I've already thought about almost everybody in this AU and where they're situated but I guess I was getting overwhelmed with thinking about writing it all down at once.

Anyways!! Miss Luz Noceda!!

In this universe, the "fancy hospital" was located in California so Luz and her parents packed up and moved from Conneticut when she was a little kid. Her Dad Manny spent a few years drifting away, slowly at first, and then all at once. And Luz, a girl who's already a bright and imaginative storyteller, falls deeply in love with the fantasy book he left her.

What begins as a healthy coping mechanism devolves into escapism as Luz desperately clings to fiction in order to endure the difficulty of real life. School is hard, making friends is hard and nobody really understands her hobbies and passions, not even her mom (Even if she tries. She tries so hard.)

Living on the outskirts of the world of showbusiness, Luz quickly takes an interest in the magic of the screen. More than anything else, Luz wants to create. And creation comes in many forms and she has no intention of being confined to just one. Luz wants to be an actor, a writer, a director, an artist, an animator, a singer, a dancer, etc etc.

It's when her mom Camila finally puts her foot down and insists that Luz needs to learn to separate fantasy from reality, that her life really kicks off.

The Reality Check Center, an after school program which Luz is meant to attend every week day at 3:30pm sharp.

But after meeting somebody special, this is not where Luz goes every day after school.

Instead, Luz is hanging out in the house of Edalyn Clawthorne, an ex-starlet who Luz recognized on sight as Hecate in the 1980s Azura film adaption.

It's always been a mystery why Eda did not reprise her role for any of the sequels/spinoffs that Hollywood churned out for years afterwards. But upon meeting her and learning a little more of her story, Luz learns the truth from behind the scenes.

Eda has a chronic autoimmune disease and she was considered too "inconvenient" to have as a star of the franchise, so she was quietly let go after the first film released. She hasn't acted since and really has no intention of returning to that life.

Luz idolizes Eda and quickly latches on to her, demanding that she be her mentor and show her the ropes of showbiz. Eda hems and haws for a while before being worn down by Luz's persistent enthusiasm.

Luz meets Willow when the latter is trying to talk herself out of having a complete meltdown and the two quickly bond over being a pair of neurodivergent academically and socially challenged silly billies.

Willow is weak for pretty girls so she lets Luz talk her into sneaking her on set. Predictably, Luz causes havoc and gets banned from the premises within a few hours.

But that's okay! Because guess what! Turns out Luz is a perfect third musketeer for the funky little friend group Willow and Gus already had going on.

Luz does tons of stuff. She writes fanfiction. She has several notebooks full of anime art. But most notably, she has a YouTube channel.

Remember mid 2000s YouTube? Before it became the corporate husk that it is today? Back when it was just kids dicking around and posting their dumb silly vlogs.

Thats what Luz does. She posts dumb silly vlogs. She infodumps to the camera about her interests, she films herself while she's out with her friends. She just has fun, yknow?

Willow and Gus have fun too. Considering they are featured in like 90% of Luz's videos, laughing and joking around with her. But thats not all they do.

Willow, who has spent several months being the butt of the joke in the the Hexside show, is experiencing what it's like to be behind a camera while being respected and loved.

Willow is an exceptionally talented rollerskater. So of course Luz is filming her do tricks around the skatepark, whooping and hollering and chanting her name. Willow has a huge interest in botany. And superhero comics. And photography. And romcoms. And Luz will let her share fun facts about her interests, or maybe even babble for a bit, and Luz will act as though she's privileged to speak to a professor of the subject. It makes Willow blush and giggle, pretending it's not a big deal.

It's a huge deal actually.

It's through Luz's vlogs that Willow's authentic personality finally bleeds through the screen. Willow Park is not Paulina. She's not ditzy. She's not unobservant. She's something else entirely.

Willow Park is soft spoken but opinionated. She is witty and expressive. She's tough and sporty. She's wise beyond her years. She's wild and mischievous. She's sweet and silly. She's so many things that she'll make your head spin.

The scripts of the final Hexside S1 episodes are beginning to trickle out around this time and honestly? The writers are sick of Paulina. They're tired of the character. They're tired of the "She's stupid" joke. They feel like they've hit a brick wall with her, in a creative sense. But now they have Season 2 to work on and...ugghhh...

That's when one writer just happens to stumble across TheGoodWitchLuzura on YouTube and finds two young actors that they know very well, just existing outside of the set.

Willow is different on Luz's videos. While on set around the likes of Amity and Adrian, she simply keeps quiet, keeps her head down and does what she's told. She doesn't really spark any inspiration, yknow?

But after seeing this? This bright, sharp witted, skater girl on a griny camera recording? Well after seeing that, they really start feeling the urge to maybe spruce up Paulina's character a bit. Make her a little more compelling.

So, in that way, Luz Noceda completely changed Willow Park's life.

Willow still doesn't think she believes in God but if angels exist, Luz is definitely one of them.

ANYWAY!! On to the Belos question.

See, I think I'm going to take inspiration from the show's canon version of the Wittebane family as an endless cycle of pain and suffering.

Philip and Caleb Wittebane were a pair of orphan boys that managed to somehow weasel their way into the spotlight at an early age. It fed them well. It kept a roof over their heads. So that meant that this was a nice life, right?

The two brothers were considered timeless stars and their names would go down in history as some of Hollywood's finest.

In the year 1990, Caleb Wittebane was found dead in his home at the age of 30. Based on the evidence, it appeared he had taken his own life.

Philip was then given custody of his brother's infant son and promised that the boy would be raised to understand just what a wondrous legacy his father left behind.

Caleb Wittebane may have been buried 6ft under but Philip had no intention of letting him die. His DNA was still preserved, attached to this fat clump of an infant.

This baby was Caleb's second chance to live. Philip was going to make sure his stupid brother made the right choices this time.

Caleb wasn't going to throw it all away this time. Philip wouldn't let him.

Chronicles of Existentia is an 8 book all age series.The protagonist is an afro-dominican kid named Mateo Jones,who grew up on earth in an orphanage with a keeper who was abusive to them and where the other kids were mean to them too and they grew up getting bullied at school and with no friends.The reason for this was that they're black,neurodivergent and very feminine 'for a boy'(in reality,she's a trans girl who's egg hadn't cracked yet and felt a strong connection to femininity as a result).But nonetheless,Mateo did her best to remain kind and optimistic and dreamed of a better life for herself when she got older.A bit more info on her personality is that she's a 'weirdgirl' a la Orihime Inoue and Mabel Pines and holds a deep sadness and some anger from her trauma

On her 11th birthday,she's teleported to an alternative dimension where Earth is instead called Existentia and is a high fantasy world.Like Atla,the people of it are humaoid but have magical powers and almost all the countries are based off irl cultures of color,with the exception of the country where most of the antagonists are from and that one is based off european cultures.Mateo discovers she's not human but existentian and was born with nature magic,the rarest kind and in the right hands the most powerful,and goes on adventures,finally makes loved ones and even saves the world.She spends most of the first book trying to get back to earth but realizes Existentia has become her home and decides to stay.This part in particular is actually what inspired the series!!I was listening to 'Helena' by Mcr by on repeat because it was making my daydreaming disorder act up and the lyrics 'Things are better if i stay,so long and good night' stuck with me in particular.Due to this,our mc's chosen name when she realizes she's a trans girl is,as you probably guessed,Helena

The reason Helena was on earth is that her home country,Girasol(Ghana and Dominican Republic),was at war with Reckoning(Europe)and her parents,Ikhlas Reyes and Cendy Castillo,were great war heroes and best friends with Girasol's king,Addae Yao,so Reckoning's queen,Gwenolyn Day,found out she'd been born with nature magic and knew she'd be a threat to her when she got older so she snuck into her room when she was sleeping and tried to do a killing spell on her but messed it up because of trying not to wake up the Reyes-Castillo's pet cat,which would be very dangerous since it's giant and has magic to an extent,and accidentally did a teleportation spell instead.She then did an illusion spell of a fake dead body in her crib and hid her deed to keep up her kingdom's 'We fight for the greater good' image.Also,Ikhlas and Cendy had been killed in battle shortly before this so baby Helena had been staying with Addae in his royal residence

Nature magic is viewed as holy in this world due to how important nature is in it's universal culture.It's abilities are pretty much in the name,plant powers and the like,but it also gives the users what is more or less reality warping via a spiritual connection to the planet and because of this it's motto is 'You're not just existentian.You're Existentia itself.'On a semi-related note,except for the people of Reckoning,all existentians are autistic.This is meant to be a metaphor for white peoples ableism against poc

The male mc is an afro-indian kid who starts off as named 'Nia' and as Gwendolyn's ward who she kidnapped as a toddler after seeing he has darkness magic,the second rarest kind and one of the most powerful,and raised to serve her.He begins as an antagonist but was never evil,just an abused and misguided kid.Helena and her friends come along and help him get a redemption arc and heal from his scars-the mental ones that is,he keeps the claw shaped one on his face(which yes,was Gwendolyn's doing).Like Helena,his egg cracks during the series so he changes his name to 'Tharun' and once he reunites with his parents in Girasol,his last name from 'Day' to 'Osei' like them.Him and Helena are eachother's love interest's and have an enemies to reluctant allies to best friends to lovers arc with the romance coming in later since they're 11 and 13 at the start.The best way i can describe him personality,storyline and a bit design-wise is 'Zuko and Hunter Noceda-Deammone but black'

The secondary fem mc is Helena's foil but not in a pick me way and instead they become best friends.His name is Lang Son and he's a transmasc he/him butch lesbian who's vitenamese and has healing magic.He's also a mean girl who secretly has a big heart but acts up as a trauma response from being a war refugee.He's the same age as Tharun

The last two mcs are Uki Santiago and Lucas Mantoan.Uki is afro-inuit,a she/they trans butch lesbian,a shy uwu soft girl and has winter magic,which is looked down on in Existentia due to being seen as the opposite of nature magic(the logic being things such as 'nature magic makes plants while winter magic kills them').She's a year older than Helena and one of Lang's two love interest's.Lucas is half taino(indigenous dominican),half cambodian and a gay trans guy who's a himbo and has multiple types of magic,which is rare,Gwendolyn being another example of this!He has flight,super strength and higher than average vulnerability and is the same age as our protagonist.He has no memories of his earlier childhood and odd behavior,which is eventually revealed to be because he was abused brutally and became a system as a result

Two major supporting characters(in addition to Addae)are Aliyah and Dror Peretz,two israeli war refugees who are siblings-Aliyah is in the same age group as the main gang but Dror is 6.Aliyah is a they/them nonbinary femme lesbian with npd who's a lot like Lang personality wise and Dror is your typical cheerful and goofy kid.The former has air magic,the latter has animal transformation magic.Aliyah is Lang's other love interest and the two of them and Uki end up in a polycule,along with [Aliyah] and their brother being adopted by Addae and becoming Helena's siblings/cousins(Addae being a mix of her honorary uncle and adoptive dad).Addae himself does his best to present as reserved and detached due to being a king but is also very chaotic and loving and a huge cat lover-Literally,he's 7' KDJDJDJF

The main five form a team called 'The Forever Force',both because they're 'best friends forever' and because Gwendolyn's goal is to destroy the beauty of Existentia because she believes nothing should last forever.There's no such thing as prophecies in this verse and a theme in the series is that you're responsible for your choices,the good ones and the bad ones,along with that you can heal with time and love,that you deserve to love yourself,how bigotry is bad and more!!I'm unsure how to end this but i hope you enjoyed♡If you did,i 🅱lease ask that you reblog,COE means a lot to me already and i want it to get popular so bad(despite my fear of the consequences)

Hihi get it? Because Eve is my name-

Okay, in all seriousness, hi to old friends. It's been a while. Almost half a year it seems. I took too much pressure on this thing which should have been like a hobby and not... like work. We aren't getting paid to do this so I want my free time to be escapist and fun and not another reason to fall into previous habits.

I am rambling. The tldr is that I am on my rebrand and self care era after a year of disappointment after disappointment so I want to do something fun and have fun.

Who am I?

I am... people on here call me Eve, but I have juggling around new pen names I could start using, mainly because my last one I have used ever since middle school. So, you can call me Eve, but don't wonder if you see other names popping up like Alina Ellis and E.V May that are now the top runners up.

I am queer, probably more neurodivergent than diagnosed but I am too broke to get tested. I live in Finland. I am 22 years old and right now I am trying to get my papers to be a full time teacher's aid, and maybe apply to study to be a elementary school teacher.

I love K-pop, especially stray kids and (g)-idle, classical literature, media about problematic women doing problematic stuff, Taylor Jenkins Reed's historical books, pretending to watch indie movies even tough I would rather just watch musicals on loop.

As a writer, I love to write some good angst. I have recently tried to write some more positive stories and just have fun but I can have fun while writing some pain. I really love complex female lead that has that delicious female rage in her. I also almost always have at least one lesbian couple or/and wholesome guy with a girlboss woman.

I can’t shake the dissatisfaction I feel about the way Luz’s experience in the boiling isles was handled. I know it’s mostly because it was shameless escapism and her running away from her life in the human realm, but like I found it hard to actually buy that she was completely miserable there.

Like I left the show feeling like she really didn’t have a terrible life and was just living in a fantasy. And that’s…not fun to me. Also, is it just me or does it feel like Camila got the short end of the stick? Either they left out some details about their relationship (which would shine light on Luz’s unhappiness) or she was a great mom and luz was ungrateful and wrong for lying.

Either way, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth about Luz as a main character, and I guess I just really really wanted more out of her character as a woc who’s also neurodivergent. :/ does this make any sense? Or is it just that she wasn’t the character for me?

So I could do multiple posts about this, ranging from how she represents nuerodivergents, her relationship with her mom, how she's represented as someone who doesn't fit in, etc. like that so please feel free to ask those things. However, for this I want to go in hard on the fact that I've been lukewarm to Luz in the past on her archtype as a main character but your last part makes me really want to talk about the role of a main character and how Luz... Fails. Entirely. Like I've said Luz is a fine protagonist but that's only on paper. In execution, for the narrative role of a protagonist... Well, a main character can be divided into having three main roles. Depending on the style of story, the type of protagonist they are, etc. like that there will be different levels of each of these three pillars. They are, in my eyes: Catalyst: How good is the character at making a story happen? A main character after all is going to be around for most of the story so they need to be capable of facilitating the amount of stories that happen with them. A shounen protagonist needs to be both strong enough to go on a grand adventure after all but not so strong as to not be able to have arcs and what not of him gaining new powers.

Guide: This is the main character's ability to show us the world and the stories within it. If the catalyst is the amount they could tell stories by themselves, this is how good they are at being a part of stories around them. This is actually why harem protagonists are such wet rags usually so they're willing to go to the beach, gym, graveyard, sci-fi workshop and class all in the same day so long as a girl is telling them to because they have so little character as to be able to do ANYTHING.

Core: How well do they represent and embody the themes of a piece? How much can people reflect off of them in order to show different facets of the main concept? This one is a lot trickier to pin down because what works for a specific theme is going to shift depending on a writer's goals but for some one you have how Light from Death Note has a god complex because that story theoretically deals with abuse of power and what one would do for it, what they would do once they had it and the lengths they would go to to keep it. Light being willing to go so far and be so entirely obsessed with power and what he sees as 'right' allows others to show their own ideologies of right and wrong use of power simply by challenging or supporting him.

And mind you that the quality of the writer does matter with these three pillars. A character can be incredibly strong in one of these by their concept but if the execution is flawed, how strong the base was doesn't matter. I bring this up because Luz... Is theoretically pretty good for these but in execution is awful in all three pillars.

The first one is the most tragic. She is a nuerodivergent, WoC who is even a part of the LGBTQIA+. Just by those three alone, she has a lot of stories that are only now starting to be told properly in media, such as Molly McGee tackling a basic woman's story of periods. There's a reason why a lot of people stand by Luz just for what she is.

Unfortunately, the writers did not. Frankly, swap her for a nerdy, white dude and I don't think much changes. Her heritage has nothing to do with the story, her being female only affects the representation in that it's two girls getting together in a romance that is frankly very normal for 'energetic boy and serious girl' and her nuerodivergence is officially non-canon now. It was only confirmed in interviews after all and Dana has said that anything outside of the show is just her own headcanons and are as valid as anyone else's. Even then, much of what makes her theoretically ADHD is also just pretty normal for main characters, let alone her archtype and never shows any of the non narratively useful elements of it.

This is all without getting into how her excitement for fantasy, magic and community should have made her both a great catalyst and guide. However, her journey with magic has no bearing on her, it's barely explored and... So is the Isles. Admittedly, the Isles has very little to show. It's a world where most of the stories are pretty rote and played out because it's just not a creative setting so even if Luz is eager, there's nothing to show.

Worse yet, the supporting cast of the show doesn't give her a lot to work with either. A lot of their stories are either abandoned or put on hold for so long that there's no longer interest in them. Worse yet, Luz has no interest in those stories, making it so that for a lot of characters, including Eda actually because the two spend a SHOCKINGLY low amount of time together, she just isn't around. She literally only ever seeks out Gus for a library card and NEVER seeks out Willow of her own volition. That's pretty shitty to put it mildly.

How about her being the core of the story? She's in plenty of it... But the show has little to no core. If it's fantasy versus reality, Luz is the one that pushes the hardest to play into tropes and to over exaggerate everything because she sees herself as the hero of the story and it isn't long until everyone just agrees with this fact. Worse yet, there's little exploration of it and the ending leans entirely on fantasy being the correct choice. Period.

If it's about finding a place and community where you belong, Luz doesn't show enough care about her community and EVERYTHING we're shown about her history doesn't make her appear like she didn't belong but that she was a genuine menace who honestly was pretty callous about other people. You have to be a special sort of messed up to get a classroom cleared by releasing spiders and then turn around and go "You know, I bet they'll love snakes." If Luz is not accepted, it is because Luz does not try and we have proof of that in the show because Vee exists and that's the whole point of Yesterday's Lie.

This all makes for a main character who on paper is great and who's only real flaw as a main character is that nerdy, teenage idiot has been done before but never as a bisexual, afro-latino girl. For a lot of people, that's not a problem but a feature because the archtype is so ubiquitous for a reason. Amphibia used it to GREAT effect and it is a solid base for a coming of age story.

In execution, the show is never willing to let Luz be... anything. She vaguely gestures at a lot of things but never commits enough to feel like any of them are her cores. She's too selfish and too self isolating to be a normal good girl. Her interests come up too sporadically and inform her actions, especially positively, too rarely for her being a nerd to feel like anything but fanservice. She's not allowed to make major mistakes, not in the writer's eyes as many of her mistakes and fuck ups are not supposed to be seen that way or excused *gestures at Reaching Out* so she can't be an idiot who needs to grow. And as I said before, her being an afro-latino, bisexual girl with ADHD never comes up beyond getting with a girl and they don't really do much with that because TOH isn't a romance story.

It makes Luz in general feel like a complete waste of a character which is fitting. She's the main character to a complete waste of a show that never managed to choose a firm identity for itself and so never gained one. And something lacking that much personality simply isn't going to be interesting.

Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Erin, I use he/they pronouns, and this is my writeblr. I’m an occasional writer at the moment due to burnout, so posts containing snippets of my writing will remain elusive for now. Despite being rather sporadic when it comes to posting writing from my own wips, I do still love being given opportunities to ramble about them.

A few things to know about me:

I’m 23 years old, and my birthday is on April 4.

I’m a queer (nonbinary & ace), neurodivergent adult.

I have a BA in English Literature, but I initially attempted a degree in Creative Writing (a horrible decision really).

For those interested, I’m an Aries (sun) / Virgo (moon) / Leo (rising), and my personality type is INTJ.

I love animals; my family currently has three cats, a dog, three tortoises, a snake, and several fish.

My favorite genres to read and write are fantasy and science fiction.

1) Andrew Minyard from All For the Game

My blorbo of all time probably. No character has given me brainrot and writing inspiration the way he does and likely no character ever will. This post sums up his appeal perfectly

2) Lan Wangji from Mo Dao Zu Shi

My newest blorbo from my most recently joined fandom. What can I say, I’m a sucker for incredibly queer competent stoic prob neurodivergent men that are absolutely insane about one person. When I watch the MDZS donghua, I literally have to pause every time he comes on the screen just so I can stare at him a bit, so you could say I’m a bit obsessed

3) Kim Theerapanyakul from KinnPorsche

He’s this weird little guy that is simultaneously the most competent character in the show and the biggest cringe-fail loser. He looks so suave and cool on the surface with his whole Taylor Swift by day mafia prince detective by night thing but then you realize he’s actually a complete nerd with a whole ass literal murder conspiracy board hidden behind a giant selfie portrait of himself and I love him so much (also he’s played by Jeff Satur, who makes my aesthetic attraction senses go haywire, but that’s neither here nor there)

4) Kyuzo from Samurai 7

My 1st fictional crush and prob my earliest blorbo. My type in favorite fictional male character (hypercompetent stoic character that doesn’t talk much with bonus points for iconic hair) can 100% be attributed to him. His story was the earliest villain redemption arc I can remember encountering in media (this was the 1st anime I ever watched so I was like 4 or 5 when I 1st saw this guy) and so for me I always think of him when I see people talking about iconic redemption arcs (sorry Zuko)

5) Midorima Shintarou from Kuroko no Basket

At the peak of my high school sports anime phase, this guy was my favorite. He’s tall, he’s green, he’s an anime glasses character™️, he’s tsundere, he’s prissy, he’s weird af, he’s got one of the most bonkers basketball skills ever, and he’s even an astrology girlie. What’s not to love

6) Merlin from BBC Merlin

BBC Merlin is the fandom that sucked me in at a time where I thought I was growing out of fandom and fanfic (spoiler alert: I very much was not) and it’s responsible for completely changing my relationship with fandom into something much more intense than it was previously. And it’s all thanks to this funky skinny wizard man who for whatever reason captivated me enough that I read hundreds of thousands of fan-created words about him for nearly a year and a half

7) Jasnah Kholin from The Stormlight Archive

She’s one of the rare canonically asexual female characters, and she’s even from a major fantasy book series too! I fixated on this character long before I knew I was ace (though perhaps that should’ve been a clue lol), mostly because I just thought she was so cool and I found her whole “why would I want a relationship when I’m busy with all this shit to study” attitude so relatable

8) Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender

I wanted to be her so badly when I was a kid y’all have no idea. She just made such an impression on me because she’s so cool and so strong but also unapologetically and obviously feminine and that really struck a chord with young me and is prob the reason why I didn’t really have a “not like the other girls” phase cuz she was revolutionary for little me’s idea of how a “girl” can be. To this day she is the character that to me has the coolest powers ever

9) Cassandra of Troy from Greek Mythology

It’s prob weird to include her but I was a real greek mythology girlie (in that I was into it before Percy Jackson came out) and Cassandra has always my favorite. The tragedy of her story has always been very appealing to me and upsettingly relatable in a lot of ways

10) Kym Ladell from Purple Hyacinth

Ms. Kym one of those characters that’s ostensibly the comedic relief except nope she’s hiding oceans of pain under her smile. She’s got trauma and a tragic backstory that she hides from the rest of the main characters in one of the strongest “this is fine” performances you’ve ever seen

rules: list ten books that have stayed with you in some way, don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard - they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.

putting this under a cut because I hate making long posts. the rules up there say "don't take but a few minutes and don't think too hard" but I don't know how to do Either of those things. this post is Long. you've been warned.

1. is, of course, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making by Cat Valente. It's a wonderful, clever story that absolutely ruined the way I view fantasy, devotion, and girlhood at a young age. It's beautiful and magical and devastating AND I LOVE IT!!!!

2. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. I post about this series all the time but I never really express how much it means to me? It's about a friendship that's so strong it defies all odds, it's about finding magic in the mundane, it's about being a weird little guy with anxiety who's trying to be braver.

3. The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under The Whispering Door by TJ Klune (they are tied). SORRY FOR THE BOOKTOK MOMENT LOL but these novels are about finding love at an older age in an unexpected place!!! about relishing little moments with people you care about in a world that's beautiful! and the way klune writes introspection really feels like how I Think. it's like a magnifying glass into my brain

4. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. another one I post a lot about that seems very out of left field considering the rest of the list! but it was recommended to me at a hard time by one of my closest friends, and the incredibly intelligent and thoughtful way it uses Words and Language to express both Horror and Humanity has had SO MUCH influence on how I want to write

5. Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White. This novel captures queer rage in a way that feels deeply personal and wildly cathartic, and the desperation and passion with which Benji views the world and the people he cares about feels the same. Also it helped me get over my fear of meat 👍hooray, meat!

6. Now this is getting hard. um. Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir <3 sorry to put a popular book again but listen. it's about humanity and how ugly and brutal and full of love we are. it's about being so painfully Normal and Alive in a world that's trying to keep what you love from you. It's about eating breakfast and petting a dog and swimming in the sea and it's UNAPOLOGETIC IN IT'S HONESTY. IT'S SO HEALING TO THE INNER CHILD TO SEE NONA LOVE SO FIERCELY

7. Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. listen. it's not a great book. it's stereotype-y and gross and kind of boring but. when you're in fifth grade and very neurodivergent but trying very, very hard not to let yourself show it, reading about a girl who is proudly Weird and Impulsive and Kind and Creative is like finally getting to see what you could be if you were a little less afraid. she was a manic pixie dream girl but she was mine, y'know?

8. (at this point I'm getting up to look at my bookshelf)

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. Again, hugely different from the rest of this list, but probably the book I read in high school that I felt was most worth my time. Stunning, earnest writing and a deeply human story. I could go on for probably an hour about how clever Ellison's imagery is, and how powerful a choice as small as leaving your protagonist nameless can be. If anything on this terrible list is required reading, it's this

9. similarly, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I read this book for school, but by choice, and I kind of hated it! Not gonna lie! But something about how batshit insane it is left a huge impression on me. While it's wildly unrealistic and often frustrating, there are little bits of earnest grief and uncomfortably close-to-home interactions that make it feel like it Could happen. The way it describes parent-child relationships makes me want to escape my mortal flesh due to feeling Too Seen.

10. FINALLY THE END! FUCK YOU! PERCY JACKSON!!! it's so funny and clever and diverse and ACCURATE! twelve year olds are little shits who want desperately to run away from their parents and make friends and have adventures! it made my sense of humor what it is, it introduced me to a blonde female protagonist who was INTELLIGENT AND BRAVE (things I always thought I was but was afraid to be)!!!!! and, most importantly, my first thought upon receiving my adhd diagnosis a week ago (it's been about five years since I last read pjo), was "wow. I'm one step closer to being a half-blood".

Today's family skype had my brother and mom but not my sister and we talked about Poor Things again and I realized that a lot of the stuff my siblings liked about it are staples in the "Weird Girl" genre, things like

not knowing social norms

acting based on self-interest w/o being inhibited by social norms (because she doesn't know them)

having more fun/a more fulfilling life by living w/o regard to social norms (both before and after learning about social norms)

and like. I've been a Weird Girl my whole life (partly due to, you know, my gender and neurodivergence) so I've sought out a lot of Weird Girl stories and like. Girls that are choosing to be weird, where they grew up being affected and punished by/for social norms and are still Choosing To Be Weird are a lot more powerful than stories where a man literally creates a woman by sci-fi/fantasy means and she is weird but only because she isn't familiar with the social norms. She's not weird and she's not choosing to be weird, she is merely ignorant of social norms because she's an invention of a man and that culminates in her being seen as weird by others. By contrast, Weird Girls KNOW they're weird and are continuing to be weird on purpose

I have to eat lunch because i'm going on a hike later so i'll just recommend the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce, I Kill Giants (the comic and the movie but be ready to cry), Mulan, Legally Blonde, the Binti series by Nnedi Okorafor. Eugenides in The Queen's Thief series isn't a girl but the constant decision to follow or break social norms is a constant undercurrent starting in book 2 (actually it does apply to all the characters, some of which are girls, but Eugenides is the main character of the series). Today was a very good day. You know why? I rediscovered walking around but inside. I took like a 30 minute walk but in figure eights in my house and it was very good for my writing brain. What did I proceed to do? I drafted 3 whole different scenes!

See, it's almost like taking walks for my mental health is REALLY GOOD FOR ME or something!

New goal dropped for December -- daily walks inside my house 😍

Also also, I got to play Shadowrun for the first time with my friends! I'm Cat with a Q (Qat) and my pet is Cat with a Ch.

Anyway, Qat is neurodivergent and a minor (except she isn't a minor lol). She's also an invisible Aspected Wizard with a pet cat, who was blessed by her spirit guide, and she lives in your walls. She's homeless. Her quest is for ramen with hot water.

ALSO ALSO -- I got sucked into Neocities today, on account of a post in my ridiculously long backlogged queue. But as I looked into it more, people are scared it might die soon cuz it's run by one guy?! Why do I always get into things when they're dying? Tiktok was the only thing I joined even VAGUELY early!? It's not fair! But sites on Neocities are SO COOL and I'm very seriously considering moving the entirity of the Yssaia site AGAIN lololol. But I had a complaint the Wix Blog and my Wix Site lowered its storage cap on me this last year so it isn't even EZ to read on or host images so... Hence why I'm very tempted to just scrap the whole thing and find somewhere else...

*ahem* Writing snippet! Right! Listen, the "journaling but on Tumblr" thing is going shockingly well. I don't censor myself -- the plan was just to cut anything I didn't want to post. But I haven't had any ultra-personal additions to add lately. So now I just ramble here lol. (Maybe I'm too open of a person?)

This snippet is between Lucienne and Nesa -- both gaslight/gatekeep/girlboss girlies dating Arlasaire, except Lucienne has generational trauma and Nesa does not. They are notably the same age, but Nesa has decided on the tactic of pretending Luce is a fantasy kindergartener

I saw this Tiktok where a lady pretended to talk to Extended Family at Thanksgiving and told them to "Mind their bodies" and "Catch a bubble" and "Think silently, in your own head". And it was hilarious. I loved it. So Nesa is stealing this tactic -- but I did imagine an alt scene where Nesa is full-aggro, mama-bear for Arlasaire. But I think that might be too much for what is functionally a Charisma-based character lol.

Hmm.. actually I don't know if they really count as side characters when they're acting as individuals, but as a group I don't really get the Cuckoos. It's not hate, but I just don't really understand the appeal.

Monet/Sabretooth

Jet Zola - specifically the thing with her and Sam but also the character in general... also throw in Sin. No one needed "sexy Nazi teenager" and we certainly didn't need it twice.

Bonus: it's such a minor point but I would like to erase most of that x-force issue with Shinobi and Mindmeld. Keep Mindmeld, I like her. But everything with Shin should go. He's way too evil and way too competent. And he actually kills someone with his powers which is something that he's generally portrayed as being all talk with. That's something that should've been built towards and treated as big change, but it isn't and I dislike it.

I'm sure there's more. I am a fountain of bitterness.

45. What’s the worst take you’ve seen about [x] (popular or not)?

You said for Monet. This is kind of fudging the question because it's not a specific take.

There's a thing that happens with Monet where she is mostly remembered and mentioned as "the other Black woman in x-men who isn't Storm or Reyes." And the way she gets utilised in fandom is frequently very much like:

"Here's my fantasy x-team line up. I needed someone who wasn't white so here's some lady. I skimmed the intro to her wiki, maybe, but tbh I'm just making this up."

And I don't want to be mean about this, because it is good that people are thinking about her even if they don't currently know much about her. I don't want to gatekeep. And also, far be it for me to tell people how to approach racial diversity in this kind of thing, I am far from an expert.

But it bothers me that so many of the times that she's remembered, it's just to meet some imaginary quota.

Hell, if we're talking about representation, there are so many boxes that girl ticks with her background and character history. But so often they don't bother with any of that. Some random white dude is the neurodivergent one, the one with the trauma. Or whatever.

And this is bigger than fandom, obviously. It's a big thing with a lot of POC characters, especially Black characters, in comics. They get included with little thought to their actual background or characterisation, and just get slapped with a random personality the author feels is appropriate.

Urgh, this is unfocused. But I guess what I'm saying is I wish people would bring her up as herself, with more actual personal detail and attention to her background. And not just mention her to round up a line up, or drag her into some nebulous attempt to cancel an author after the fact (lol that is a specific subtweet but I'm not going to elaborate). Maybe at the very least don't assume she's American. That would be nice.

I don't really have one for this. Not that I haven't seen a bunch of blatanlty untrue fanon takes - dear lord it's like 90% of them - but I'm usually pretty skeptical... I think...?

Looking For Beta Readers!

Côries + Anima is a queer, young adult/low fantasy experimental book I've been working on for 5 years. I'm looking for beta/content readers before I try publishing because I'm still in college and want to get ahead as much as I can! Please DM me if interested, or help me get traction so I can find more people! I really want a diverse book like this for all the kids like me who couldn't always see themselves, and I really want to change the way we view literature in the 21st century!

SYNOPSIS

The world ended a minute ago. You just missed it.

If the Apocalypse never happened, Côries would have been living the normal life of any neurodivergent, queer, half-demon teenager. When calamity strikes in the form of detention gone wrong, Côries is whisked into the world of politics where gods serve as dictators and social media influencers.

Côries is kidnapped by two civil servants who work for his least favorite god, Aman. After being freed by snarky time-traveler Vedette, he is faced with a question that will change the course of history: What is the value of a life in a world ruled by gods?

Three different protagonists lead the story.

The story is split into two acts with different themes and interconnected plots- Côries, which follows Côries, and Anima, which follows Becca and Caddy.

Côries is split into four parts based on themes. Anima is split into three parts.

Many characters get to speak in their own distinct voice to allow for as much diversity in narrative as possible: The narrative switches between 20 different characters so that you're never stuck on the "boring one" (I'm so sorry Jason Grace) too long!

The book is written in an experimental style! This means the book can be written through normal, first person, present tense text, but also in differing tenses, multiple points of views, through poetry, Tumblr posts, texts, snapshots of Ap psychology notes, GPS directions, screenplays, victorian novel diary entries, experimental theatre, dance, songs, and the text can go up and down, sideways, slantways and longways and backways and upside down! I've found that as a neurodivergent reader, I really enjoy variability!

Côries: He/Him. A viciously snarky and wonderful pansexual high school freshman who happens to be Demiurge. Son of Lucifer. Biracial (countries do not exist anymore in the book, but his mother has Indian and Black roots)

Becca: She/Her. Closeted African American honors student and class president of Pittsville High, a high school taken over by a popular goddess looking for new material for her shows.

Caddy: She/Her/Queer. An ace/bi girl struggling with her childhood sexual abuse and future problems with Anima, the power of the gods. Vedette's first friend. Biracial

Vedette: She/Her. A painfully esoteric girl who is the final time traveler in this world. Trains Côries. Bisexual. Egyptian/Greek

Soldier: They/He. The first nonbinary soldier in an army pitted against Côries. Physically disabled after an apocalyptic surge of divine energy. White, Queer.

Cælia: She/Her. A girl tormented by the divine energy coursing in her veins caused by the Dœm Blast. Friend to Côries. Queer, white.

Jax: He/They/Them. The salutatorian at Pittsville High struggling with divine secrets they never wanted to learn and their dead brother's sexual abuse. White, bi.

Elena: She/Her. An biracial woman struggling with the neurological after-effects the surge of divine energy caused, and her status as valedictorian at Pittsville high.

Okay but seeing people talk about genshin characters with chronic illness, pain and fatigue is always fun because we have some canon examples (Collei, Xiao, Layla). Like… Layla has canonical chronic fatigue and narcolepsy? Which is fun! But, it also feels like it edges a bit into some. Interesting territory shall we say with the whole “she passes out and her sleep self writes her papers”. The tropes that come to mind are called- I think Disability as super power and secret alter ego stuff. But on the other hand…. Man it’s rare that I see a character almost stumble into plural coding, with what Faruzan has to say about her (roughly paraphrased- she’s a nice girl but she never knows what to expect because at night she’s friendly, but during the day she almost runs away from her).

Yeah it's odd with Layla because she's like, one of those character i don't think you're supposed to acknowledge is chronically ill/disabled/neurodivergent type person, like the kind that basically shows all the sintoms but you're not supposed to see it because god no! imagine actully giving those people rep! you know?

Like with Sheldon. He's basivally shown every single sign and yet the writers realllyyyyy want you to know it's not canon he's autistic.

It's... It's often very odd when fantasy world use disability as a metaphore. I think the owl house is the only one who does it really well and does not run into some weird accidental coding and shit. And even then, it's only by a little like it got close at points to accidental problematic coding.

It's realll weird.
