When I started shipping them:

Back when I first read the manga, when I reached chapters 111 to 113. Man, I was hooked. Their young selves did something irreversible to me lmao, and then Uta hit me with the old tattoo meaning and I was Gone.

It was in 2014, iirc. I started TG when it was over but before :re was published (by the time i was finished, :re was 7 chapters in, very precisely xD i remember bc it's the chapter Nishiki calls Haise Kaneki)

My thoughts:

I've talked about this extensively in the past but yeah their friendship is insanely important to me. The way they go on about "you're my friend" it makes me bonkers. They are the definition of what relationships should be, in my book. Friendship first and foremost and above all, for better or worse. They are The QPP™. Absolutely legendary. First ship to make me so gone. I often say Percabeth was my first OTP but nothing consumed me quite like Utaren did before they did. They're my OTQP? I guess? xD

What makes me happy about them:

Yeah, their friendship. How ride or die they are about each other. Able to rip each other to shreds but will also risk their lives to save the other. How accepting Renji is of Uta's clownship (before it threatens Touka lmao). The unconditional love. The brutality of it.

What makes me sad about them:

"Nec possum tecum uiuere nec sine te". doesn't make me sad per se but ouch anyway. The abandonment Uta felt when Renji left. The intricate knowledge Uta has that he can't be by his side but they can't be apart either - to the point of getting it tattooed. On his fucking neck.

Help.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me:

Making it sexual. I don't read much TG fanfics these days (or at least not new ones. i reread my favs instead) so idk what's the trend regarding them but back then I never liked them smut. Feels unnatural.

Also once I read a fic in which one said "ily" to the other (they were in a relationship already) and the other got up and left and they broke up??? What's up with that. I genuinely don't get why saying ily to your boyfriend would make him leave?? isn't that why you're dating?? Anyway.

Things I look for in fanfic:

4th ward era. "graphic depiction of violence" is always welcome.

How I feel about this character:

I feel too many things in too much quantity. I feel love, I feel grief, I feel protectiveness, I feel something sink in my stomach and something lift me in the sky. He is my most beloved, my husband, the light of my days. He makes me smile, he makes me oh so happy and he's one of the reasons I cry at night. He is everything to me.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character:

Langa, of course. Kiriko, also and also of course. Both in the EDEN and Adakiri/LoveMantis way and in the EDENMantis way uwu

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

With Tadashi, kink dom/sub relationship, with deep deep devotion on Tadashi's side and slowly recovering trust and friendship.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

Depends on unpopular where. If it's in the entire western sk8 fandom, the unpopular opinion would be ADAM is absolutely amazing both character-wise and person-wise. He's the best and he deserves so much love.

If we're talking ADAM fandom, it would be that He Is Not A Slut. He is the very opposite of that.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

I wish Cherry would apologize to him. I wish he'd managed to kill Reki. I wish we would know more of his past, especially regarding Kiriko. That's three things. Who cares.

Favorite friendship for this character:

With Tadashi, as kids. With Joe and Cherry, as teens. With Langa (and with Kiriko in my dreams), as adults.

My crossover ship:

With Matsuri (TG). I don't exactly ship it and it wouldn't work anyway because they're both doms but it's fun thinking about them meeting and becoming friends.

The early morning sun peeks through the thick leaves of the mahogany trees on the Shindo estate. Ainosuke is enjoying coffee and bread for breakfast on his balcony. He woke up earlier than usual, so he was able to skip having breakfast with his aunts. Because of that, it was already a good day for him.

Natsuno came to help him dress, but Ainosuke said he didn't need to. It was Tadashi's job, and it comes with the role only he was allowed to fill.

Wearing only his sleeping robe, Ainosuke basks under the warm sunlight, a cool breeze sweeping over his exposed flesh as he stirs his coffee. A smile plays on his lips as he remembers the very first time he arrived in America and waking up to a similar atmosphere. Now the heaviness that Tadashi's absence had left was no longer there. It was replaced by lightness. A lightness that obliges him to look forward to more mornings like the one he was experiencing now. Pretty soon, he'll wake up to find Tadashi sleeping next to him. It was a wonderful thought.

After finishing his bread and coffee, Ainosuke walks into the room and stands in front of the dresser mirror. He takes his polo off and starts dressing. It was the first time in a long while that he got to dress. When he was in the States, he did this alone. When he returned home, it became Tadashi's job permanently. The memory of the first time he asked Tadashi to undress him comes to mind. He had been feeling a bit haughty at that time. He dressed so perfectly and so charmingly as to make himself irresistible in Tadashi's eyes. He was sure he looked good, but Tadashi never responded much to his teasing. Remembering his childish antics makes him laugh.

He catches a glimpse of how spacious his room was. It never bothered him before. He couldn't help but realize he was alone, but now, he wasn't lonely. The thought of Tadashi makes him smile again. It sends a tiny bolt of pain in his chest. Realizing that he probably misses him, Ainosuke dragged Natsuno along with him to visit Tadashi. He arrived at Tadashi’s condo at 6:30 a.m.

Natsuno carried a bouquet of freshly picked roses from their rose garden, looking so confused as his master rushed excitedly to the entrance. When they entered and walked towards the lobby, it was perfect timing that Tadashi had just gotten out of the elevator. He was still in his pajamas and looked sleepy. Some of the locks of his hair were sticking out. When Ainosuke saw him, he grabbed the bouquet from Natsuno’s hands and rushed to Tadashi with a wide grin on his face, completely forgetting about Natsuno.

Ainosuke tried to fix the hair of a sleepy Tadashi by running his fingers through the other's hair. It was the first time he saw Tadashi with bed hair, so he got a bit excited. Signaling the chauffeur to wait for him, Ainosuke winked at Natsuno and followed Tadashi inside the elevator.

"What brings you here so early in the morning, Ainosuke-sama?" Tadashi yawns.

"I just came by to see your face." Ainosuke leans in a bit closer.

The cheesiness caught Tadashi off guard. He looked away, a bit embarrassed. Ever since they got together, he feels Ainosuke is getting sweeter and sweeter towards him. Something behind Ainosuke's back catches his attention.

"What’s that you’re hiding?"

"I brought you flowers."

Ainosuke hands the flowers to Tadashi and smiles widely at him. The smile almost knocks the air out of Tadashi's lungs so that it leaves him leaning against Ainosuke’s shoulder to hide the blush that spreads on his face.

"You shouldn’t have. What if others see you?"

"There’s no problem. Are you alone?"

"No. But Take is asleep."

The elevator dings. They are now on Tadashi's floor. They went inside the house and immediately went to Tadashi’s room. Ainosuke sat on the bed while Tadashi was trying to find a vase to put the roses Ainosuke brought him. When he finally found one, he put them on his bedside table and followed Ainosuke to sit on the bed.

"Have you had breakfast yet?" Tadashi asks.

"Yes, bread and coffee."

"I see."

"If you want to have breakfast, I’ll accompany you. I just came by to see you. I woke up earlier than usual. My meeting is at 9:30, so I can spend some time with you." Ainosuke was avoiding Tadashi’s eyes as he said it. A blush spread over his cheeks, and he was a bit jittery. The sight was so endearing that Tadashi couldn’t help but smile. He pats Ainosuke's hand and kisses him on the cheek.

"It’s embarrassing for you to see me like this," Tadashi said shyly.

Ainosuke moved closer to Tadashi.

"It’s fine. You always wake up before me, so I never get to see you like this at the mansion.

"I like getting to know this side of you."

Tadashi went silent. He just stared at his boyfriend and then looked away.

"Since you came all the way here, do you... do you want to touch me?"

The boldness of the remark surprised Ainosuke.

"Just for a bit..." Tadashi adds. He takes Ainosuke's hand and guides it to his chest.

"I don't have pecs as glorious as yours." He guided Ainoduke's hand to squish his right boob. The needy look on Tadashi's face made Ainosuke feel horny.

"Mine's not bad either."

A sweet smell is starting to diffuse into the room. Tadashi sees that Ainosuke's lower half is already reacting to him. He gropes Ainosuke’s crotch and nonchalantly says, "Or I can get you off with my mouth,"

Breathing in Tadashi's sweetness, Ainosuke slowly loses his composure. He finds Tadashi unbelievably sexy. Tadashi rarely takes the initiative, so when he does, it can be a bit overwhelming.

Tadashi inwardly gasps. He was at it again. He purses his lips, disappointed in himself.Yet it was not enough to stop what he wanted to do. He wants to be touched. He wants to please Ainosuke.

"It seems being close to you makes me lose my head."

Tadashi rubs the bulge on Ainosuke's crotch.

"I wonder how I was able to work so closely with you and be functional."

Ainosuke shudders.

Tadashi presses his thumb on the bulge, paints circles on the surface, and looks down at Ainosuke's crotch.

Ainosuke could only stare at his boyfriend, surprised at what was happening. Slowly, Tadashi lifted his eyes and gazed into Ainosuke's crimson orbs.

"Tadashi, you're so sexy... I might get addicted to this aggressive part of you." Ainosuke says, completely catching Tadashi off guard.

Tadashi ends up glomping him.

"Ainosuke-sama… you're so adorable. I love you."

Ainosuke laughs and rubs Tadashi's back.

"I love you too!"

Suddenly, Tadashi pulls on Ainosuke's suit jacket.

"Puppy? What are you doing?"

"Undressing you."

Tadashi withdrew and faced Ainosuke.

"You don't want me to?"

"That's not what I meant..."

"You're hard. I'll take care of it."

Tadashi pauses and drops his head.

"What’s wrong, Tadashi?"

"Are you disgusted with me?"

"Eh? What are you talking about? Of course not."

Tadashi looked unbelievably fragile, clutching Ainosuke's suit jacket.

"Because I’m…"

"No... what are you talking about?" Ainosuke pulls Tadashi in for a hug.

"I’m happy that you want me."

"I’ve said this before, but you can do whatever you want to me."

Tadashi didn't reply.

"But I want to take things slow with you."

Ainosuke takes Tadashi's hand in his and squeezes. They exchanged looks. Tadashi nods his head and kisses him on the cheek.

"Aren't you having breakfast yet? I'll accompany you."

Before Tadashi could reply, Ainosuke added, "If you haven't prepared it yet, I can make you some. You may not believe this, but I know how to make breakfast." Ainosuke was a bit smug when he said he could make breakfast.

Tadashi's mouth curves into a thin, amused smile.

"I know. But you don't need to. I'll just reheat my food."

Both stood up and went into the dining area. Ainosuke sat down and waited for Tadashi to get his stuff. When Tadashi placed his placemat on the place adjacent to where Ainosuke sat, Ainosuke dragged it beside him, so Tadashi was forced to place his plate there. When his meal finished heating, he took it out of the microwave and then sat beside Ainosuke.

All was quiet. Tadashi was itching to break the silence because the silence, coupled with Ainosuke's gaze, was making him a bit self-conscious.

Being watched was something he was supposed to be used to. Yet, when it is Ainosuke who watches and pays attention to him, he can't help but feel conscious. He can't help but feel shy.

"D… Do you want to have a taste?"

Ainosuke nods and opens his mouth, waiting for the food. Tadashi quirks his eyebrows in a fashion akin to looking at a playful child. He feeds Ainosuke. Ainosuke giggles as he chews, happy to be fed. It's everything he could ask for. Now, the mundane things Tadashi does for him normally mean something more than just work. Maybe it always had a different meaning for the older man. Maybe it was only Ainosuke who thought the things Tadashi did out of love and affection were just for work.

It doesn't matter now. Maybe it will not matter anymore as Tadashi's affection engulfs the doubts in Ainosuke's heart. For sure, it didn’t matter now when Ainosuke is intoxicated with the happiness that comes from sharing a meal with the one he loves.

Tadashi watches how happy his boyfriend is. It fills his heart with a softness he used to think he should not be feeling. It is the weight of the guilt that has settled over the years since he realized he was in love with his friend.

Now he is conscious of Ainosuke's scent; his closeness. He wonders why it was easier to fall into the bottomless pit of lust whenever he was with him.

It was unnerving.

He hates the feeling.

Maybe he should continue taking his suppressants, if only to prevent the lust that always burns him when he thinks of Ainosuke.

There is no logic to what he feels.

He is afraid that he is being too aggressive and might put his boyfriend off. It has always been him who receives aggression, there were only a few times he was the giver, but even then, he didn't feel this kind of lust.

Omegas were supposed to lust in a way that channeled the desire to bear the child of their alpha mates. They were not built to lust, thinking of impregnating their alpha partners, but every time Tadashi touches Ainosuke, this thought is at the back of his mind: he wants to breed Ainosuke; fill him up with his cum; force him to bear his child. "This love attack from you is bad for my heart!"

Tadashi gapes at him.

"I want to go ahead and marry you now. Ugh."

Tadashi fell silent. The words shot an arrow right through his heart, swathing him in a warmth that made him feel giddy. He basks in the feeling and leans against Ainosuke.

"That's the plan, isn't it?"

"We'll be together for the rest of our lives."

Those words brought the brightest smile to Ainosuke's face.

"Yes!"

Ainosuke slouched into their apartment with a heavy sigh, draping his jacket over one of the wall hooks before stepping into their small dining room and collapsing into a chair. In the kitchen, Tadashi looked over from where he was standing over the stove, stirring the contents of a pot.

"Bad day?" he asked sympathetically, taking in his friend's pale skin and the dark circles under his eyes. But Ainosuke didn't even answer, just shrugging and leaning back in his chair. His jaw tightening, Tadashi removed the spoon and covered the pot before walking over to Ainosuke, standing behind him and resting his hands on the younger man's shoulders. Carefully, his fingers bit into tense muscles, working to gently smooth out the knots while Ainosuke sighed again, this time with some relief. And his own hand rose to rest lightly on the back of Tadashi's.

"Just some bad customers. Nothing I couldn't handle."

Except that Ainosuke clearly looked like he hadn't been able to handle it, and Tadashi again wondered if he'd done the right thing in bringing him here. They were both still young, perhaps too young to live on their own without any support. And yet, what other choice had they had? Ainosuke had looked so frustrated as they'd watched his board go up in flames, and Tadashi hadn't been able to hold himself back from arguing with Aiichiro that he'd gone too far. After all, that had been the first time that any of Ainosuke's family had raised objections to his skating, even though they were right that it was an antisocial activity that was primarily practiced among individuals of a much lower social status. They hadn't warned him, given him a chance to stop... they'd simply destroyed the one thing that he loved.

So of course Tadashi had been fired, along with his parents. But he hadn't expected Ainosuke to follow them, to find Tadashi and ask him to take him away from his home and run away together. They'd argued about it up until the night before Ainosuke's departure from Japan, and his friend finally wore down his resolve. But they couldn't do anything to endanger his parents' employment either, not after they had finally found work for a family that wasn't closely connected to the Shindos, so that they wouldn't fear their wrath in taking in a gardener and a maid who had been thrown out by them. If the Shindos found out that Tadashi was responsible for the loss of their precious heir, even that distance wouldn't be enough to prevent his parents from facing repercussions.

Thus, he had taken over half a year to make all the preparations: obtaining a passport and visa, setting up new bank accounts, earning what he hoped was enough money to allow them to start over in a new country, and finally purchasing tickets to California. By then, Ainosuke was several months into his courses at Columbia University, but he'd instantly withdrawn from school and flown across the country when Tadashi contacted him.

So now Tadashi was working as a personal assistant during the day and taking online classes at night while Ainosuke waited tables and attended auditions whenever he could, hoping to break out as a star. All they had to show for it so far was this small, dingy apartment, a far cry from the life of luxury that his friend had once enjoyed. But as difficult as their life was, Ainosuke had never complained about it.

Ainosuke's arms reached up to wrap around his neck and drag him down into a gentle, undemanding kiss, and Tadashi lingered, his hands stilling on his shoulders. Ainosuke's lips were soft and slightly chapped, and they tasted faintly of espresso and tobacco. He'd tried to persuade Ainosuke to apply for universities nearby, promising that he'd try his best to support both of them, but Ainosuke had insisted on exploring a career in the performing arts. They'd both known that it would be unlikely that he'd find overwhelming success as an unknown Japanese artist, but Tadashi would support him in whatever he wanted. That had been the whole purpose of running away from home, after all: to release Ainosuke from everyone's expectations and allow him to pursue his own interests.

And they still skated together sometimes, when they could both get time off from their respective jobs. They'd both made a splash in the local skating community with their skills and befriended a number of other skaters. They weren't Sakurayashiki or Nanjo, but Ainosuke seemed to enjoy his time with them regardless. He laughed as he showed off his tricks and learned new ones, challenging himself, Tadashi, and whoever else happened to be at the skate park with everything he did. Even though Tadashi wasn't sure if he'd done the right thing, he couldn't deny that at those moments, Ainosuke seemed happier than he'd been in years.

Eventually, Ainosuke's grip on his neck lessened, and Tadashi pulled away, looking down into ruby eyes that glimmered with tired satisfaction.

"What's for dinner tonight, then?" Ainosuke asked, his arms falling back down to his sides before he straightened up. Tadashi took that as permission to step away, so he did, his fingers reluctantly sliding off the younger man's shoulders.

"Beef stew. I hope that you enjoy it." It was his first time trying to make it, but there had been some stew meat on sale, and it seemed like something that kept well, which would cut down on his meal prep times for a few days, at least. And his heart skipped a beat when Ainosuke smiled at him.

"I love everything you give me, Tadashi."

Tadashi flushed and rushed back to the kitchen to check on the stew, giving it another stir before tasting it. After adding another dash of salt, he judged it to be finished and ladled some out into two bowls, carrying them over to the table before returning to the kitchen to grab the bag of fresh rolls that he'd also picked up at the supermarket, two cups, and the three-quarters-full bottle of wine he'd used to cook with.

While his friend picked up his spoon, Tadashi watched Ainosuke taste the dish, studying his face closely. And Ainosuke smiled, swallowing before reaching for the bottle and turning it around to read the label.

"It's very good, Tadashi. But won't we be in trouble if anyone finds out that you gave an 18-year-old alcohol? The drinking age in this country is 21, you know?" he teased lightly. But Tadashi just shrugged as he reached out to pluck the bottle from Ainosuke's hand. He deftly poured it out into the glasses before picking one up and taking a sip.

"I won't tell if you don't. Besides, you're one to talk. The age to smoke is also 21."

Ainosuke's smile widened as he picked up his own cup and tilted it towards Tadashi. Wordlessly, Tadashi clinked his glass against it before they both drank and began to eat in earnest. After they'd finished, Tadashi stood to clean up, only to pause when the other man reached out to clasp his wrist.

"Ainosuke?" he asked uncertainly.

"Sit down."

Unsure what was happening, Tadashi obeyed anyways while Ainosuke stood up instead, returning to the hallway briefly and returning with a plastic bag. Glancing at the older man, he added, "Close your eyes."

Tadashi hesitated, but he again listened, closing his eyes and listening to the rustle of plastic, a harder crinkling sound, the sound of tearing cardboard... He wasn't sure what was going on, especially when he heard the more familiar click of Ainosuke's disposable lighter.

"Okay, you can open them."

"Just Ainosuke, remember? Make a wish and blow it out," Ainosuke urged him, draping himself over Tadashi's back and wrapping his arms around him. Tadashi stared at the flickering flame, wondering what he could possibly want beyond this. At least for himself, he was satisfied with his life now, as difficult as it was.

A life that others would admire and envy, but which they couldn't really hate him for because Ainosuke was simply too charismatic to hate.

Perhaps it wasn't the sort of wish that most people would make, but the only thing Tadashi really wanted was to stay beside Ainosuke for the rest of their lives, and he had no reason to believe that anything would change the relationship that they had now. And perhaps it was childish to think that a superstition like making a wish on his birthday could do anything, but after Ainosuke had put in so much effort into this, the least he could do was try to do this properly.

So he made his wish before blowing out the candle and picking up one of the plastic forks to slice off the tip of the slice. Bringing the fork back toward him, he shifted the angle to bring it to Ainosuke's lips instead. The chocolate frosting smeared over the young man's lips as Ainosuke tried to push it back toward Tadashi. But when he put his mind to it, Tadashi could be just as stubborn as the young man who'd thrown away his family to fly across a continent to be with him. So eventually, Ainosuke accepted defeat, opening his mouth to accept the somewhat deformed morsel. Only then did Tadashi cut off another piece for himself, patiently splitting the cake between them until they'd finished.

And then he leaned back into his lover's touch, smiling as he looked up at Ainosuke.

"Thank you," he murmured.

"I've got one more gift for you," Ainosuke replied, his breath tickling the curve of Tadashi's ear. "Come on."

He moved to the side of Tadashi's chair and tugged on his arm playfully. Shaking his head, Tadashi allowed himself to be pulled to his feet, though he glanced back at the table and the pot still on the stove.

"The dishes--"

"Leave them for tomorrow. It's your birthday!"

Ainosuke sounded so enthusiastic despite his earlier exhaustion that Tadashi couldn't refuse, and he followed the younger man to their bedroom. There, Ainosuke immediately pulled off his shirt, revealing his sculpted torso, before falling onto the bed and looking over at Tadashi.

And when he was finally clean, Ainosuke snuggled up against his side, draping his other arm over Tadashi's chest as if to make sure he couldn't get up. Tadashi's own arm snaked over the other man's side, resting on his back and pulling him closer.

"Thank you," he murmured, and Ainosuke made a pleased noise in response before they both drifted off to sleep.
