• all your life you’ll dream of this, by attila — cinderella au but with wei wuxian as prince charming. a fantastic story, i was so engaged in this it’s a wonder.

• ⭐️🎖️ one good thing, by yuu_chi — wei wuxian’s a ghost haunting his childhood house until lan wangji appears. seriously, everything about this plot charmed me. i’m enchanted.

• ⭐️ some of you, by tangerine chair — social media au where lan wangji’s an actor and posts a suspicious tweet about his love life. incredible story, really.

• ⭐️ this should definitely happen, by yeolinski — wei wuxian waking up high in anesthesia and hitting on the hot guy who’s there with him. this is so goddamn funny, i swear i can’t.

• linger in the sun, by etymologyplayground — wangxian are cursed to not hear or see one another. i loved this a lot, it’s terrific.

• another way, by anonymous — wei wuxian sneaks outside to buy emperor smile’s again, and once again encounters lan wangji. i’m frustrated this doesn’t have as many kudos as it deserves, tbh.

• life, drama and action, by akai_hana — one more social media au with wangxian as a famous couple. awesome story.

• inebriation and affections, by chewing — wei wuxian gets drunk and shows his clingy attitude. it’s great to see him like that for the first time, thank you author 🙏🏼

• ⭐️ the stars in the hazy heaven tremble above you, by cicer — wherein wei wuxian’s ciderella and wangji’s prince charming. i could read this over and over and never get tired. in fact, i did.

• ⭐️🎖️ only the deepest love, by occultings (microcomets) — pride and prejudice fusion. everything’s a bliss, magically and wonderfully so. i fell in love with this masterpiece. in fact, read everything by this author!! highly recommend. especially three days gone, if you go searching rabbits and a life in your shape!

• beneath six layers of silk, by darkredloveknot (enheduane) — lan wangji’s cursed to speak every thought of his out loud. come on, who never wanted to check what this guy’s thinking? perfect!

• ⭐️ let me come home, by cafecliche — seven nights with wangxian being sappy. i could dream about this piece of art. really.

• ⭐️🎖️ i hope that you will come and meet me, by feyburner — another post-canon cql where wangxian slowly get together. i find this particularly devastating and so beautiful.

• the ocean between us, by catbrainedschemes — this is for those who watched the legend of the blue sea, yes, the k-drama! because this is a fusion of it, where wei wuxian is a mermaid.

• call me, beep me, by myung — a whole social media au in another level! they are all actors and i love this idea so much. myung-laoshi big brained, tis glorious story right here made a lot happier.

• and his wanting grows teeth, by yukla — cultivator lan wangji finding wei wuxian in a village, an au in canon setting as the tag says. it's devasting how good this is, really.

• listen to the voice inside your head, by pupeez4eva— wei wuxian wakes up to his future-self voice inside his head. it's telling him suspicious things. the amount of giggles i let it slip. in fact, i recommend every work by this author because they always makes me laugh!

• 🎖️ the breaking of your soul (upon my lips), by sunsandships — canon-divergence where wei wuxian discovers that lan wangji's the one who kissed him without his consent. that changes everything. just... magnificent fix-up story, as i said so in my bookmark.

• neatly arranged, by thunderwear — wei wuxian and lan wangji are betrothed, against their own wills. do we have enough wangxian arranged marriage content? no, we do not.

• ⭐️🎖️ pigtail pulling, by protos_metazu_isson — lan wangji decides to face wei wuxian's pigtail pulling face to face. that goes better than the expected and worse that what he further imagined. it's surely one of stories i keep on rereading from time to time, especially because it's not big and it's so CUTE!! help.

• ⭐️🎖️ your hand in mine, by cerbykerby — wangxian cursed to hold each other's hand. i could scream while i'm are. come on, this is one of the best stories here, it's short and so sweet, so fitting for them too. perfect, perfect.

• ⭐️ as you like it, by cosmicmilktea — wei wuxian starts to discover what's lan wangji likes. it's what he should know as his husband, after all. IT'S WHAT WE NEED AND DESERVE.

• ⭐️🎖️ i'm the one for your fire, by occultings (microcomets) — a cherry magic au, where wei wuxian can reads mind and discovers lan wangji from the office is actually into him. and maybe he's also into lan wangji. but like, in a no homo kinda way. of course! (denial's a river on africa, dear.)

• ⭐️ look not with the eyes, by spodumene — a case fic post-canon cql where everyone who knows lan wangji starts to devote themselves to him and it doesn't work on wei wuxian. why would that be? i wonder.

• ⭐️🎖️ sweet chaos, by eachandeverydimension — it took me a long time to finish this because everything was so good i wanted to feel it forever. wangxian arranged marriage where they're fourteen and lan wangji goes spend the time with him at yunmeng.

• ⭐️🎖️ your words upon my lips, by uchiuchi — during a nighthun, wangxian get cursed, what one says comes on the other's lips. this killed me, it's so freaking funny and overall over the top.

• ⭐️🎖️ linger by the door (i've always been yours), by piecrust — epistolary wangxian! post-canon cql! introspection! slow burn! everything i could ever want in just one fic. and the letters are unbearably beautiful.

• my heart skips a beat (so my gut can feel the punch), by piecrust — wangxian taking the long way back home. i always wonder how these pretty stories come into an author's mind.

• we sit in the sunset glow, by moonsteps — tangled au where wei wuxian's flynn rider and wangji's rapunzel. thank you, dear author, indeed wangxian came straight out of a fairy tale movie and we deserve more fics like this!

•⭐️not in so many words, by jaws_3 — getting hananaki through a curse after he flirts with the wrong florist, wei wuxian starts dealing with the consequences of his actions. a masterpiece. and so, so lovely, gimme more. this author also has many darling works.

• ⭐️tickling sleeping dragons, by fallingfeathers — a hogwarts au with wei wuxian as a troublemaker gryffindor and lan wangji as a rigorous ravenclaw! perfect, isn't it? the development's awesome as well.

• blooming into the color of love, series by leffy — actors wei wuxian and lan wangji, who are judged to be rivals, have to work together for a tv show. and they have sex scenes at that. so enjoyable!

• love potion no. 9, by ria_green — one more hogwarts au where amortentia's involved, so you can imagine what happens. short and soft.

• the rivers start to sing, by fruitys — another tangled au but this time with wei wuxian as rapunzel and lan wangji as flynn rider. it's a marvel that we have two tangled aus in here! phenomenal. mountains, we met by this author (every work of theirs, actually) are also worth every bit!

•⭐️blue-ribbon bunny, by cicer — shapeshifter lan wangji is forced into a shift after getting tired at work and wei wuxian finds him. bunji won my heart, i want to pet him! wei wuxian, you lucky fool.

•⭐️no more looking, i've found home, by annadream — more epistolary wangxian! more post-canon cql! getting together! once again, with terrific letters. i'm astonished with these author's mind.

•⭐️🎖️teen project to change the world, by animeloverhomura — mdzs characters watching mdzs donghua!!! please, this is my utmost FAVORITE! ever! i'm also translating this into portuguese, for those who wanna check in the start note (i'm slowly updating it, im sorry). but aaah, how sensational this work is!!

• an impromptu visit to the city, by bosbie — lan wangji time travels into a modern time and wei wuxian finds him there! oh, this is precious, they are the best.

• heartkeeper, by postingpebbles — bunny lan wangji again, but this ain't modern times, and it's also fascinating. the arts in these made me so warm inside, too.

• ⭐️🎖️the one-body problem, by metisket — during a ritual, lan jingyi's possessed and wei wuxian's on his body with him. waahhh, i couldn't help but chuckle during every part of this, it's well-written and freaking nice to see them bonding. jingyi and wei wuxian being buddies owns my life.

• ⭐️🎖️no certainty of doors between us, by betts — this is the story that HAUNTS me. i read this every once in a while because it's goddamn FANTASTIC. just roommates wangxian with wangji complaining about wei wuxian but being head over heels in love with the man. chaotic, amusing and flawless!!!

• ⭐️🎖️covered in bees, by scarlettstorm— apiary au with wei wuxian freaking out over bees at his doorstep, but then lan wangji comes to aid. and of course, chemistry sparks. and there are bees everywhere. and my heart's melted.

•🎖️lavender blue, by ana_cp — wei wuxian's a florist for a wedding and lan wangji's a cook, they meet and don't stop meeting afterwards. everything about this work is excellent!

•⭐️ wrong turn, right place, by diamondbruise — more time-travel au! this time, it's wei wuxian who goes to cloud recesses coming from his modern time. one of my favorite quotes from all the fics i've read it's in here. such an exquisite work.

• hello, it. have you tried turning it off and on again?, by overmountainandmeadow — here we have modern setting, office wangxian, it superior lan wangji, juniors as interns and other great plots. stunning work!

• diamonds are wei wuxian's worst enemy, by thefaceofno — lan wangji says he wants to marry, and wei wuxian thinks it's with another person. of course it isn't. so he helps plan his own wedding. coming from our best fool, that's expected, really. splendid!

• secretary lan, series by silverclaw — exactly what it says, lan wangji as his husband's secretary and everybody thinks wei wuxian's cheating on their spouse with... well, his spouse. it's absurdly good.

• our hands clasped so tight, by chapter_61 — wangxian get stuck in a library and conversations ensue. i like the idea of fics with a lot of dialogue, and this one didn't fail to surprise and light me up! lovely!

• ⭐️connected: unknown number, by phoenixking25 — wrong number aus always have my heart, and wow, how good this one is. truly excellent, with the perfect lenght. the ones i read are always so short, but this is longer! a win for the wrong number lovers.

• cut through the clouds, break the ceiling, by tardigradeschool — modern setting with our adorable boys including a drunk confession. i'm not lying when i say this is so delightful, i want to print it out and keep it.

• who could stay? you could stay, by martyrsdaughter — neighbours au, where wei wuxian's a bit intruding. maybe too much. but lan wangji likes him anywhere. what is there not to like? haha, a whole awesome read.

• ⭐️ be gay, do crime, by merelydovely — lan wangji thinks wei wuxian, the guy who invaded his home one afternoon and petted his bunnies, is a bad guy. he's not. hilarious and brilliant!

• ⭐️don't threaten me with a good time, by livinginaworldofnoise — ridiculously funny! basically, a great british bake off au with wei wuxian being a lil demon. i want this to be printed and delivered during my funeral, thank you very much.

• ⭐️as the clouds part and clear, we finally meet again, by 12262325 — lan wangji, as a kid, encounters wei wuxian, who's older than him. they keep on encountering each other, and lan wangji keeps on falling in love with his senior. aah, i'm in love with this work! i can't stop rereading!

• as if you were a mythical thing, by daltoneering — a vague steampunk au as the author suggest, and it absolutely rocks! i wish this had even more hits, as it deserves.

if xiyao was in a super power au, what powers do you think they'd have (either a 'everyone has powers' or 'xiyao are superheroes' type thing)

Ohh, funny that you'd ask, I've been toying with the idea of possibly writing a superhero AU. It'd be a campy old school Batman setting, so nothing too left field as far as powers go - the Lans are a predictable mix of Batman and Supes so they get: flight, superstrength, bulletproof skin, and money. As for JGY, I haven't decided yet (but if I did, it'd be a spoiler~)

Let me give you an opening snippet I wrote a little while ago:

Every time he’s asked why he stays in Suzhou, Lan Xichen says it’s because it’s his ancestral home, where his family has owned a mansion for generations. If you asked Zewu-Jun, he’d say it’s where he’s most needed. The crime rate in Suzhou had spiked over the past decade, and when Lan Xichen returned freshly graduated from Oxford he barely recognized the city of his childhood. Charity and public appearances could only do so much - it was Wangji’s idea to don a cowl and take to the streets. At first, Shufu had been staunchly against such a public display of their powers, but he’d soon realized that Wangji would not be deterred. Lan Xichen, for his part, suggested taking turns - this had the double advantage of sparing them the exhaustion and allowing them to maintain a respectable public life, covering for each other if they were occasionally sighted by the press. Ultimately, Shufu could not in good conscience stop them from doing what he himself had once done in his youth - that is, wear a uniform that allows for acrobatics and patrol the roofs of Suzhou. Wangji does his “side” job with a grim sense of duty and utter efficiency. He does not seem to find joy in it past a job well done, but that is no small thing in itself. Lan Xichen, for his part, patrols the streets out of carefully nurtured optimism and some whimsical nostalgia, indispensable to survive the bleakness. There’s beauty in the smoke-darkened canals of Suzhou, in the permanently dark sky crucified by spotlights. There’s resilience in its people, who keep living rather than running. This is a city worth saving, so that it may dream again like Lan Xichen does. Also, he likes spandex.

This volume seems completely intent on finding that out because OH BOY DOES IT TRY! I can’t talk about what specifically happens, because those would be spoilers of IMMENSE proportions, but suffice to say that we find out the truth behind why Wei Wuxian became Enemy Number One in the cultivation world: as in, the specific inciting event, and not just the general disdain that everyone has for his chosen cultivation path that’s been there since Volume 1. And let me tell you, learning about what he did, but more importantly WHY he did it, is just a shot to the heart on several levels. See, here’s the thing: it’s clear that Wei Wuxian has a savior complex. Part of that is due to the circumstances of how he grew up (which are immensely tragic), but also because he really just has a very clear sense of what’s right and what’s wrong, and has absolutely ZERO qualms about doing what he thinks is right - even if it means he gets himself hurt in the process, and crucially, without thinking about what others might think or do or say about what his chosen course of action. He sees wrongdoing, he goes and fixes it how he thinks it ought to be fixed. Which would be GREAT, if he ever stopped to think about the consequences to himself and more importantly to the people he cares about. And honestly, I appreciate that this is something this story takes the time to really delve into: how doing the right thing no matter what can lead to damaging consequences, not just for oneself, but for the people surrounding oneself. So often in Western media we see characters do heroic things, and they’re always forgiven because they “did the right thing”: think comic book superheroes whose fights level entire city blocks, destroying homes and communities and livelihoods along the way, and yet are still lauded for their actions. (And yes, I KNOW there’s been pushback against this in other media, but the fact remains that your average Marvel movie is still going to show all that property destruction and it’s going to be handwaved away as being “okay” because the Avengers protected New York from the latest threat and Stark Industries can rebuild everything anyway.) But this series shows that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Wei Wuxian learns that the very, VERY hard way. While he’s willing to take on all the consequences his choices might bring (he’s quite emphatic about this across the volumes), he never stops to think about how this is practically impossible. His choices always impact others, whether that’s his adopted siblings or Lan Wangji or the entire cultivation world. While Wei Wuxian is undoubtedly a hero, and his actions have always sprung from very good reasons, he has destroyed lives along the way, because he never once stopped to think if there was any way he could minimize and mitigate the potential harm his actions might cause. On the other hand, there’s something really ADMIRABLE about the way Wei Wuxian deals with his mistakes - in that he admits to them, and deals with them as best as he can. He knows he’s made a lot of terrible choices, but he does his best to fix what he’s done wrong, often sacrificing himself in order to set things right, which is driven home in a very specific scene in this volume that absolutely GUTTED me when I read it. His morals are also extremely admirable: he KNOWS when he’s right and isn’t afraid to speak truth to power, even if it gets him in trouble. The cultivation world thinks of him as this horrible man, but in many ways he’s FAR more noble and upright than a great many cultivators. Given all of this, the romance between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji definitely took a backseat during this volume and the previous one, though things did pick up quite a bit by the end of this one. There’s still plenty that needs to be resolved by the fifth volume in terms of the plot’s central mystery, but I think their romance is going to be a bit more front-and-center now, given what happened. May is still a ways away, so there’s going to be a wait for that next volume. I’m definitely going to have to get my mitts on it as soon as it comes out; I really want to know how this all ends. Thoughts (cut for spoilers):

- THE REVEAL OF THE CORE TRANSFER OPERATION WAS SOUL-DESTROYING! THE FACT THAT WEI WUXIAN GAVE UP ON THE SOURCE OF HIS CULTIVATION POWER JUST SO JIANG CHENG WOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP ON GOING IS JUST! SO!! TRAGIC!!! AND LOOK AT HOW JIANG CHENG TREATED HIM UP UNTIL THAT REVEAL!!! GODS I WANT THAT NEXT VOLUME NOW SO I CAN SEE HOW THEY RESOLVE THIS. - Speaking of resolutions: WEI WUXIAN AND LAN WANGJI “SLEEPING” WITH EACH OTHER FINALLY IS MAKING SCREAM! THEY’RE SO BAD AT COMMUNICATING WITH EACH OTHER THEY REALLY, REALLY NEED TO SIT DOWN AND TALK! AND NOT WHILE LWJ IS DRUNK!!

This one is a WIP with really interesting premise. Half dragon Foxxian and dragonji. Wwx unreliable narrator due to outsider pov that makes interesting mystery elements. Many cultivators have creature blood. Wen ruohan hunts down other creatures to eat and absorb their power. Wwx parents were killed for this reason in wen territory and everyone else thought he died, but actually trapped behind border barrier & habitually rescues people from wen.

Wei Wuxian doesn't know, but to be able to hatch a frostbitten egg is considered impossible.

He was not happy about the ending of the book and the way it treated his favorite character, Wei Wuxian, so when he gets transmigrated into the story he is determined to help his underrated fave achieve a happy successful life. He had hoping they could be friends, what he wasn't anticipating was that he would be so captivating

Superhero!AU:

A work vaguely based in the Miraculous Ladybug lovesquare situation, where Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are a superhero pair. Wei Wuxian is in love with Hanguang-jun and Lan Wangji with his classmate, Wei Ying.

Fake Marriage AU:

In which Lan Wangji is an alpha, Wei Wuxian is an omega and they are both forced to be in hiding together in the beginning of the Sunshot Campaign. Unable to explain to people why they have ended up in such a situation and in need of an excuse for their highly inappropriate arrangement, they fake being a young married couple - revealing a lot about their feelings along the way.

For as long as he could remember, he had these dreams of a live in a world that seemed like pure fantasy compared to his own, where people had powers and flew on swords and all kinds of monsters were real. He had assumed, like everyone else had, that it was only his imagination.

For seven months, Zhanying watched his youngest siblings smile and laugh and try to pretend their stomachs weren't still rumbling when they went to bed, growing thinner every day, and in the eighth month Zhanying said no more and joined the army.

Not my usual pairing, but this slow burn backstory romance was fantastic, following Zhanying through his service in Prince Jing’s army and their changing relationship over the years. Fealty and pining and wordless chemistry, oh my!

Crash and Burn by Aureutr_Accoredge (The Mandalorian, Din/Luke)

There had been no Seeing Stone on Tython that Grogu could use to call for a Jedi. They had survived Gideon's light cruiser mostly by luck. And now Din Djarin is trapped between trying to resume his old life with Grogu in tow or facing what wielding the Darksaber truly means for him and his people. Mostly he just wants a nap.

Luke Skywalker is looking for Jedi artifacts he can use to help build a curriculum for the school he seeks to create. Not that he knows where it will be. Or how to find pupils. But then he runs into a shiny stranger whose beskar armor makes him a null space in the Force. And he doesn't know who Luke is.

Intrigued (and in need of parts to repair his ship), he Skywalkers his way into tagging along on the latest bounty.

I LOVED this: it’s very long and plotty dealing with Din becoming Manda’lor, with a great meet-cute to slow burn romance, but mostly this author gets Luke Skywalker in all his dorky-epic glory. Really interesting treatment of Luke’s trauma from his fight with the Emperor and the war generally, and the rare Din/Luke fic that really showcases Leia.

Silver and Copper by Heronfem (Witcher, Geralt/Jaskier)

Geralt is just supposed to pass through the quiet Lettenhove area. He's not anticipating being begged by its people to help save their viscount from a curse that keeps him from daylight. Lord Jaskier, they call him, and he's likely dying.

As Geralt struggles to untangle the ugly web of history that has lead to the increasingly complicated curse, he finds himself spending more and more time with the strange young viscount and wondering just what he might have been before the curse, and who he might be after. But things are not always as they seem, and as the curse tightens its grip on Jaskier, Geralt is forced to face the fear of failing yet another person whose choices were stolen from them.

Very AU, but a gorgeous dark fairytale with a strong backbone of hope and community. Mind the warnings - Jaskier’s father is a definite monster in this.

Exit Strategy by smilebackwards (DCU/Batfamily, gen)

Batman needs a Robin and Batman has a Robin. Tim is just extraneous now, vestigial. He’s a bandage over a healed wound. He doesn’t know what he’s hanging on to.

Or: Tim didn’t expect his exit strategy from the Batfamily to involve quite so much bonding time with Damian over Wayne Enterprises bureaucracy.

*rolls around in the Tim feels* *and the Tim-Damien brotherly feels* Mmm, delicious.

This doesn’t break any new ground plotwise for a S15 fixit, but it’s beautifully written: immensely tender and healing and romantic.

Revenge is a Side Dish Best Served With Tea by merakily (The Untamed, Wangxian)

Despite popular opinion, Lan Wangji is actually: 1. Terrible at diplomacy 2. Surprisingly vengeful 3. A master of holding grudges

Five times Lan Wangji gets his petty revenge + one time Wei Wuxian calls him out.

Very fun! Like the summary says, it’s tea-based petty bitch LWJ revenge fluff, with a nice underlying thread of affectionate-and-protective Wangxian.

His Greatest Adversary Yet by architeuthis (original superheroes, slash)

Doctor Nowhere doesn't do the nemesis thing. But the Blue Beacon hasn't been seen in a while, and the more he learns about why, the more it haunts him.

Wonderful mad scientist/superhero piece - Max is such a distinctive and hilarious narrator right from the start, the older-person-figuring-out-they’re-queer feelings are strong, and there’s a lot of deft worldbuilding in the background. [For a little bonus fic-of-fic porn, please enjoy All Along The Watchtower (Or At Least Against The Men's Room Door) by PersianPenName as well, which is very hot and funny.]

Wei Wuxian, worst supervillain

(Full series here).

Lan Wangji has never met a worse supervillain.

He finds this rather remarkable considering that he has, during his tenure as Hanguang-jun, fought quite a large number of villains. The “super” part of supervillain can of course be determined by the villain in questions’ power level, which is what separated Wen Ruohan and Jin Guangshan from their minions and successors. Certainly some of them, like Wen Ruohan’s two successors, Wen Xu and Wen Chao, lacked style, as did Su She and Jin Zixun. But what they lacked in style, each and every one of them made up for in sheer villany. Even Wang Lingjiao didn’t hesitate to kick a puppy she saw on the street.

The Yiling Patriarch, on the other hand. Well.

“My evil plans will not be foiled this time!” The Yiling Patriarch shouts, black robes billowing in the howling wind.

Lan Wangji isn’t entirely sure where the wind is coming from. He suspects a military-grade fan.

The Yiling Patriarch stands on edge of the city skyscraper, a violently red sun setting dramatically behind him. His wild black hair obscures the red light crackling in his eyes. His black mask obscures his face, but doesn’t manage to obscure his evil smile. He pauses his villainous speech briefly to play shrieking flute music, warbling, lightning-fast scales and melodies; very thematically appropriate.

It cannot be said that the Yiling Patriarch lacks style.

Lan Wangji hovers in the air in front of the skyscraper, his white robes floating elegantly around him. As he pulls out his guqin, corpses flood the streets below. They’ve all been summoned on the Yiling Patriarch’s command. On streets throughout the city are Zewu-jun, Chifeng-zun, Sandu Shengshou, and another dozen of Lan Wangji’s fellow superheroes. No other supervillain has forced so many heroes into action all at once.

“You have no hope! My corpses cannot be stopped!”

It cannot be said that the Yiling Patriarch lacks power. Not even Wen Ruohan was as powerful as the Yiling Patriarch is now.

What the Yiling Patriarch does lack, however, is something that Lan Wangji struggles to explain.

It’s on a stormy night that Lan Wangji finds the Yiling Patriarch leaning against the side of a building, deep in some alleyway, clutching his side with one hand. His breath comes out in erratic bursts, and his sopping wet hair runs down his face and his back like ink down a brush. His silver eyes are dull when he sees Lan Wangji land lightly on the paved ground, clear umbrella held above his head, moonlight filtering through the plastic. They barely register shock, or fear, or anything else.

The Yiling Patriarch slowly pulls his hand away from his ribs, lets both of them hang by his side. Black liquid drips off his hands like ink onto paper.

“Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Lan Wangji?” The Yiling Patriarch asks. “It appears…” He lifts his hands. Raindrops pelt his palms, rinsing away the dark liquid. “…Quite black.”

Lan Wangji looks at him. The Yiling Patriarch tilts his head back, closes his eyes. He lets rain pelt his face as well, as if it could wash him away.

“No one at the prison died,” he says.

“There’s that, at least,” the Yiling Patriarch murmurs after a pause.

Lan Wangji has never met a villain who cared if people lived or died. So there’s that, at least.

Are his robes blacker than they were just a minute ago? Between the rain, the night, and the already black robes, Lan Wangji cannot tell.

The Yiling Patriarch cracks open an eye and squints at Lan Wangji. “You really do glow, you know that, Hanguang-jun? It’s unfair.” He sighs, then pulls a face and clutches his side again. “The joys of gut wounds,” he mutters under his breath. His eyes close again, and his knees start to tremble. “Ah, but I kind of broke your super prison, didn’t I?” The Yiling Patriarch says, louder. “So where are you going to put me?”

The Yiling Patriarch doesn’t move from his position against the wall until the rain abruptly stops falling on him. He opens his eyes again, and this time sees Lan Wangji holding his umbrella over him.

“I will walk you home,” Lan Wangji says.

“Walk me home?” The Yiling Patriarch echoes. “Lan Zhan, you’re supposed to take me in. What are you talking about?”

But he doesn’t resist when Lan Wangji pulls his arm over his shoulders. Nor does he see the way Lan Wangji’s ears turn bright pink.

“I will walk you home,” Lan Wangji repeats.

The Yiling Patriarch is a terrible villain.

The tip of Wang Lingjiao’s five-inch high heel jabs into the side of the dog currently begging at the hems of her lilac robes.

“Excuse me,” she says peevishly. “Do continue,” she says to Lan Wangji.

“This conversation is over,” Lan Wangji snaps, fists clenched.

She rolls her eyes. “Oh, come on,” she says. “Just because a stupid mutt interrupted?” She bats her eyelashes at Lan Wangji. “We were at the part where you convince me to join your side? Hanguang-jun? Hanguang-jun! Lan Wangji!”

Lan Xichen finds him later buying a leash for his new pet dog. “Wangji,” he says, on the exasperated side of fond, “why do you insist on debating morality with villains?”

Lan Wangji doesn’t glare at him, but he does clutch his new dog closer in his arms.

“Do you really think you can just make one of them see reason if you name enough philosophers?”

“Yes,” Lan Wangji says stubbornly.

Lan Wangji is halfway through his sentence when the Yiling Patriarch starts moving.

One moment, he's leaning against the black lamp post, very intently listening to Lan Wangji’s lecture on ethics. There’s a smirk playing at the corner of his lips that Lan Wangji very definitely isn’t thinking about. Nor is he thinking about the way the light from the lamp post shines on the Yiling Patriarch from above until he glows, or how it feels to have all the notoriously frantic, unfocused energy of the Yiling Patriarch directly entirely at him.

The next moment, the Yiling Patriarch’s eyes widen behind his mask, and he practically teleports on top of the pole.

“Not that I’m not enjoying our discussion on morality,” the Yiling Patriarch calls down nervously, “but. There’s a dog.”

Lan Wangji blinks. He looks down. A stray dog wanders past. It stops at the bottom of the post and sniffs. The Yiling Patriarch whimpers.

Lan Wangji removes the dog.

The moans and roars of corpses rise up from street level. The Yiling Patriarch flicks all the hair out of his face, then throws his head back and lets loose a suitably evil cackle. “Comply with my demands, Hanguang-jun…or else!”

“Or else what?” Lan Wangji asks.

“Or else…uh.” The Yiling Patriarch thinks for a moment. The wind blows his hair back, and Lan Wangji sees a flash of metal tucked in the Yiling Patriarch’s right ear. “Fava beans! I will…eat your liver with fava beans? Wait–”

“Hannibal Lecter,” Lan Wangji interrupts. He nods knowledgeably. He’s done his research. Extensive research, as it’s not a topic he’s ever encountered before. “Additionally, “‘Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight? It appears quite black.’ Also Hannibal Lecter.”

The Yiling Patriarch’s cheeks flush dull pink. “Both of them? Really?” He mutters under his breath. He never seems to realize that Lan Wangji can still hear him. He clears his throat. “Ahem! I am a god, you dull creature–”

“Loki, The Avengers,” Lan Wangji interrupts again, pleased with himself.

The Yiling Patriarch points his flute at Lan Wangji, flustered. “Well then…do what I say or all your base are belong to me! Wait. Fuck. No. Wen Ning,” he hisses. “What rubbish lines are you feeding me?”

“I am afraid I do not recognize that one,” Lan Wangji says regretfully. He’ll have to research that one once this is over. “Though I have unlimited access to all of our databases and records. As you would, if you joined us.”

The Yiling Patriarch pauses. The tip of his flute wavers. “Are you trying to bribe me to the heroic side…with library access?”

Lan Wangji considers this for a second. “Yes.”

The Yiling Patriarch wavers some more, and then he laughs helplessly, bright and clear. “Alright, Lan Zhan,” he says. “You got me there.”
