#this is late night overthinking delete later thoughts but #thinking about the fact that i’ll probably never be able to be in like a real actual queer relationship #like every time i remember that and then think a lil too hard about it #it makes me so sad to the point where my stomach hurts #like im lying in bed rn thinking about it and im getting actual real pains #and it just hurts so bad both physically and emotionally #because i know that i won’t be able to come out to my parents #like i try to tell myself that one day i’ll be able to tell them but as time goes on it just doesn’t seem realistic #and i just don’t know how i could be in a queer relationship under those circumstances #and ppl will say ‘just cut them off if theyre not supportive!!!!’ but for me and my situation that’s just not possible #‘do whatever you want to do who cares what they think!!!’ you don’t know anything ab my situation stop saying this #being in a queer relationship is something that for the longest time i tried to pretend that i didn’t want #and now that i’ve finally accepted who i am and what i want #i just feel like im back in that little hole of secrecy and shame bc i know that (at least for now) i still have to pretend #that im not queer #ahhhh #sigh idek if anything of this makes sense and is coherent #thinking about this makes me cry and makes my head hurt and my stomach hurt #but i just felt like i needed to let it out #because im not out to anyone irl so i have no one to talk to about this #anyways i should probably try and sleep before i fall too far down the rabbit hole #sigh

part of my job as archivist for a LGBTQ center involves working with an interviewing elder queers, and the disconnect between our generation and theirs is so upsettingly palpable. so many young queers think that elders aren't up-to-date on identity politics and are "set in their ways" when it comes to understanding the nuances of gender and sexuality, but that is so incredibly far from the truth.

if anything, the real problem is in the reverse. young queers aren't giving the time of day to our elders and its only alienating all of us from our shared history. just about every elder I've spoken to is doing their best to understand how our identity politics have evolved and is actively supportive of our generation adding our language and experiences to our sprawling rainbow tapestry.

there is also this strange idea that elder queers no longer contribute to that tapestry, that their time is gone and its only the youth making progress. but again, that prevailing idea is just alienating our generations from one another. most elders I've spoken to are extremely active in the community and work hard to do what they can to preserve our histories and assist in current activism.

the fact of the matter is that we are losing our elders, both to time and estrangement, and it is critical that we make conscious efforts to bridge the gap before its too late.

TLDR: We have to do better when it comes to including queer elders in our current activism. They are our history, they are our family, and we need to give them the same love they give to us.

Speaking as someone who's been outed many, many times, by both "allies" and homo/transphobes, some of yall are way too comfortable sharing other peoples' queer identities.

"But what if I'm trying to be funny?" Doesn't matter.

"But what if I'm an ally?" Doesn't matter

"But what if the person I'm talking to is an ally?" Doesn't matter.

"But what if I'm queer?" Doesn't matter

"But what if the person I'm talking to is queer?" Doesn't matter.

"But what if the person I'm talking about is a stranger?" Doesn't matter.

"But what if it's really obvious?" First of all, ew. Second of all, Doesn't matter.

"But what if they didn't come out to me, I just figured it out on my own?" Doesn't matter.

"But what if they're getting misgendered?" It's just as easy to say 'actually she's a girl' as it is to say 'actually she's transgender and uses she/her'. If that person is pretransition, it's also easy to just bite your tongue and not say anything.

Unless that person has explicitly given you permission to share that information, you DON'T. No matter how certain you are that everyone is accepting, no matter how noble your intentions, it's not your information to share. Getting clocked sucks, getting outed sucks, and they're both an invasion of privacy no matter who's doing it.
