opinion on modern day america
My dearest August Worstmonth,
I am very disappointed in the state of modern-day America. I cannot say with certainty that I did not expect our grand outcome, but I would've thought it would happen much later than this.
To ensure that America could live steadily for as long as it could, I, George Washington, wrote a farewell address alongside Alexander Hamilton, giving advice to the country and letting all of my words deliver before my death.
In that letter, I explicitly talked about some of the things I feared and advised against. Firstly, we need to ensure isolation and not be involved with the affairs of other countries, however increase our connection with them in regards to trade to boost our economy. Also, be wary of political parties because they are just abominations whose only purpose is to divide us and get us to ignore our American identities. As well, be responsible with our money, and make sure not to make debt a problem.
What have I come back to? We have constantly messed with the affairs of other nations, including two massive worldwide wars, and many of this fiddling has gotten us a massive territory that we don't need.
What have I come back to? The Federalist and Republican parties died, but with them emerged numerous new parties, including a Democratic and Republican party who both honor practically the same thing and neither do anything for our economy or anything that's actually important for our country.
What have I come back to? We are currently trillions of dollars in debt, all because we were irresponsible and too confident in our abilities to see the destructive nature of ourselves.
Despite the many who say otherwise, America wasn't a bad and evil country. It had good potential. It had a government and people who were caring. And yet, look at us now.
I must say, I'm ashamed. But please, do not be depressed. Use this very fact as an opportunity to improve it. Go out, vote for the one who will do you justice after some good research, and don't vote for any third parties because they will always lose. I applaud you.

This Day in History: Washington on Human Nature
On this day in 1779, General George Washington writes a letter.  He was worried about a double agent, then working for the Continental Army.
Could the man be trusted? “I always think it necessary to be very guarded, with those who are professedly acting as double characters. . . . Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder,” Washington mused.
The letter reflects something deeper that shaped our nation: Our Founders understood the imperfections of human nature. They knew that people are fallible, and that power corrupts. They knew that greed too often rules the day.

A RANT.
I have so many issues with the American justice system.
I grew up in a country where the justice system is very different than it is in America. And yet, the American justice system is the one I knew the most about when I first went to Law School two years ago.
That has since changed.
Now I know a ridiculously extensive amount about my own country's justice system, and yet, somehow, even more than I did before about the American justice system.
Because we use it in comparison more often than not.
But it's not in the way you'd expect.
Despite all the TV shows and movies showing how "impressive" and "exhilarating" it can be to stand in a courtroom pleading someones case, this is not the justice system we aspire to be like.
It is actually the one we aspire to not be like.
And that is not just because of the many, many cases of wrongful convictions that lie within the haunted halls of the american courtrooms.
It is also because the American constitution in and of itself is flawed because of the way it is changable in the way it is.
You see, the constitution in my country is not liable to change in the same way. It is open to change - but it takes a majority vote of the entire country to do so.
Here's another thing we don't do; we don't give out sentences with the purpose of punishing or scaring. We do them with rehabilitation in mind.
We also don't strip felons of basic human rights.
Like voting. Or being able to get a job after their sentence is paid off.
When I first went into law school, so much of my impression of justice had to be altered. Because we do absolutely nothing like they do in America.
We don't have a jury. We don't give out 100 years worth of sentences. We don't have the death penalty. We don't strip away rights. We don't base whether someone is convicted or not on a crime they may or may not have committed on how good the lawyer is.
It's all focused on justice for all parts. It's all focused on proof. It's all focused on rebuilding, rehabilitating, refocusing people and society.
Sometimes I wonder whether this could have helped the mirror America sees themselves in.
I know of so many likeminded people who live in America. I have so many friends living there right now, currently being punished because the system is consciously working against them.
Everything is working against them.
Every. Single. Thing.
The American system does not belong to the people.
It belongs to the billionaires. The white cis men. The religious. The capitalists. The republicans.
But the rest? Including those amazing American people I've met in my lifetime, who I love and adore?
They're being left in the dirt. They're expected to submit and accept that this is how it works. While still being expected to tell the rest of the world that their country is simply the best. Despite none of it being so.
I love my American friends. I pray for their safety.
I pray America finds its way, sooner rather than later.
I do this, despite not being a single ounce of religious.
Because I worry what will happen to the rest of the world if it doesn't.

Federal laws need to change.
The Constitution needs to change.
They have to. They will.
As Americans, no government will ever be good enough for us. Until one is.
Until these things happen.

While talking with some of my American friends, I happened upon the text of the 14th amendment of the U.S. constitution, and I would recommend that all of my American followers go read it. Right now.
This part in particular is something I think you need to demand be enforced with regards to a certain political party;
"No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."
Putting that in plain English, it doesn't just say people who've led an insurrection can't hold office, it says no one who has tried to go against the constitution can hold office, nor can anyone who has helped those people in any way.
