Field of Lucid Dreams
Because I had a hard time getting my novel picked up, I decided to publish my short stories — my collection of coincidences — as a blog, hoping I would gain some traction that way. And before I even wrote a single post, a series of events proved this was the right choice.
At the library where I work, a book came across my desk, called Proof of Heaven, which was about a neurosurgeon who has a near-death experience and describes his vision of the afterlife. It was inside a box full of donated books. I stacked the donations on a cart to shelve them when Sarah, one of my colleagues, stopped me.
“Got one more for you,” she said. She handed me a picture book called Holly, which had a black cat on the cover.
As I filed away the books, I picked up Proof of Heaven and flipped through it. I found a withered prayer card tucked in the book, on page 24; someone must have used as it as a bookmark and forgot about it. I opened the card with one hand, while holding the book open with the other, and one word on the page, from this passage, happened to catch my eye.
Then, out of nowhere, I shouted three words. They were crystal clear, and heard by all the doctors and nurses present, as well as by Holley, who stood a few paces away, just on the other side of the curtain.
“God, help me!”
Holley.
Sarah had just handed me a book called — Holly. I put down Proof of Heaven and picked up Holly, and the first sentence said that last November, we lost our 14-year-old cat named Holly.
That was when Marianne came to mind. Marianne’s birthday was on November 14th. Her father died last year, after a long, grueling illness.
Instead of putting Proof of Heaven on the shelf, I kept it aside for her.
She texted me a few days later: “So I guess I have to read that book now. Last night, this lady at work mentioned that baseball movie, Field of Dreams. Later, I watched this YouTube video, and it mentioned Field of Dreams too. The crazy thing is that the video was about near-death experiences — just like the book.”
“Holy shit!” I wrote.
When I thought about Field of Dreams, I remembered this strange this little episode that took place the night before.
“Here’s another baseball coincidence for you,” I wrote. “Last night I was at Pita Land getting shawarma. I was standing in line, watching TV, and a headline flashed across the screen: ‘Jays sign new infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa’. But I caught it so quickly that I could have sworn it said infidel, not infielder. I stood by the TV, waiting for the headline to loop back around, so I could see what it actually said. And his name sounded just like what was on the menu — Falafel.”
She sent me a laughing emoji.
“It’s interesting,” she went on. “I never get any signs from my dad, and I want one so badly.”
A few days later, it was New Year’s Eve, and I spent the night at Robb’s place. At one point, he put on the new Dave Chappelle Netflix special: The Dreamer.
Thinking about Field of Dreams, I listened to his monologue, my eyes fixed on the screen.
In your life, at any given moment, the strongest dream in that moment wins that moment. I am a very powerful dreamer. I dreamed tonight as a fourteen-year-old boy, and I’m living it as a fifty-year-old man…
This gave me such a renewed sense of determination to publish my collection of coincidences online. Even if no publisher in the world wanted my book, I would still chase my dream.
And so, the next day, I set out to write my first blog post. I closed my eyes and waited for an idea to come to me. My thoughts went back to Pita Land, and I remembered how on that morning, at work, a bunch of us were talking about obscure horror movies; someone had brought up a documentary about the Donner Party, the group of American pioneers who were trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains and resorted to cannibalism to survive. Now, just before I saw the headline about Kiner-Falefa, I noticed — for the first time in all the years I’d been eating shawarma — one particular item on the menu: Beef Doner.
With a shudder, I started jotting all this down, wondering how I would string this together into a something worth reading. At first, I couldn’t figure it out, and so I took a break. With obscure horror movies on my mind, I started scrolling through YouTube, looking for something to watch. Then I found a channel called Renegade Films.
At random, I clicked a video called “Who Let Him Make This Movie?”. The movie, which I knew nothing about, was Babylon. As it turned out, much to my delight, Babylon was directed by Damien Chazelle — whose name echoed Dave Chappelle.
When it was over, another video on the channel, right next to the one about Babylon, caught my attention: “The Perfectly Logical Reason This Director Ate His Shoe (inspiring)”.
The director was Werner Herzog. It was about the time Herzog promised Errol Morris he would eat his shoe if he finished a movie about pet cemeteries he was working on. And, as I later read on Wikipedia, “In 1978, when the film Gates of Heaven premiered, Herzog cooked and publicly ate his shoe.”
Pet Cemeteries. Holly. The lost cat. Proof of Heaven. Gates of Heaven.
In other words, the perfectly logical reason this director ate his shoe was so that it would serve as a call to fearlessly chase your dreams. He said:
If I abandon this project, I would be a man without dreams, and I don’t want to live like that. I live my life, or I end my life with this project. All these dreams are yours as well… we have to articulate ourselves otherwise we would be cows in the field.
Field of Dreams.
My head was spinning. Finally, I read the Wikipedia page on Field of Dreams. And the first paragraph absolutely blew me away. Field of Dreams was based on a novel by W.P Kinsella called — Shoeless Joe.
The Perfectly Logical Reason This Director Ate His Shoe.
Frantically, I kept clicking all the links on Wikipedia, writing down all the connections I found — including the fact W.P Kinsella wrote a book called Butterfly Winter, Proof of Heaven had a blue butterfly on its cover, and Werner Herzog directed a movie called Fitzcarraldo, about a man determined to transport a steamship over a hill in the Amazon basin in order to build an opera house.
Field of Dreams gave us the phrase, “If you build it, they will come.”
If you build your website…
– they will come.
Finally, I jumped back to the Wikipedia page for Field of Dreams. In the movie, Ray, who was unable to reconcile with his father before he died, hears the ghost of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson tell him to build a baseball diamond in a cornfield. If you build it, they will come. Throughout the film, Ray sees the ghost of “Shoeless Joe” and other dead baseball players. Then, during a game, when the catcher removes his mask, Ray recognizes him as his father as a young man.
I stopped reading at that point, and I thought about something Dave Chappelle said:
You have to be wise enough to know when you’re living in your dream, and you have to be humble enough to accept when you’re in someone else’s…
All this time, I thought the coincidences were all about my writing, my blog — my dreams. But then I remembered what Marianne said about her father. And I knew I had to be humble enough to accept this wasn’t for me. It was for her.

Another thing i forgot to mention is how either on the nose or vague homestuck can be about these things. If you ever sat down and i did those classpect quizzes, it's all very personal and your choices tie in with your result. Which got me thinking about how personal do the aspects really get? How reflective are they with the themes of the characters? Vriska for some reason is tied to light and not mind. I can't think of one instance in the story where light was a theme with Vriska but there was plenty with mind. Karkat is tied to blood, plenty of instances where his character relates to blood. Sometimes they fit sometimes they don't. Then there's the fandom where i feel like they give homestuck just a bit too much credit and losely piece together minuscule thing to try and make sense of vague things. Imo it's a bunch of reaching and they don't seem open to things being coincidence. Like for instance the refrigerator magnets with Rose. Since there were no w's around she used 2 v's to make one. Which Eridans typing quirk is a reference too. So it COULD imply he had something to do with the Lalondes? They have similar interests. Well Eridan hit on Rose then blew up his computer and it ended there basically. Like homestuck picks and chooses how deep it wants to go with this stuff then throws it away, it's annoying.
There are moments of things or moments that hint of bigger things to come. But never went through. Or things that would hint characters play a bigger role, but it never got too deep into it or contradicts with another. Things like how dead Feferi was able to wake a sleeping Jade, the fuchsiablood being the likely person that would have shown us about the Dream Bubbles. But it was Aradia who had to explain it. Or the supposed prophecy for one certain member like Dave, Jake, and Eridan, to take down the big bad. The latter two being Hope Players, but why was Dave included in this if he is not part of it? Just because he is the same aspect as LE with the whole Lord of Time? Then why couldn't it have also been someone like John, Rose, Jade, Aradia, Jane, or Roxy? Aradia being the closest to go up against Lord English. It really sucks because with how they do callbacks to moments or characters inspired by one event, there are a multitude of combinations people can do for characters to meet and grow.

So I’m the worst. As soon as I started the Newsies Gift Exchange my mental health took a nose dive and my school decided to ramp up the assignments to 100. I never forgot and I have been working on it when I had the time so here it is! I'm so sorry I'm late @annihilatedthenightstalker . I hope you enjoy my very very late gift. I am so sorry.
Prompt- Jack's really scared for some reason and David sees him cry for the first time, its then he finds out just how touch-starved Jack is.
If there was one thing David knew, it was that Jack Kelly would be the death of him. He wasn’t even mad about it, it was just a simple fact of life that he had come to accept.
That's what he thought as Sarah shoved him awake, telling him in no kind words that his Cowboy was at the window and he needed to go take care of it. He yawned before pushing off the bed and making his way to the open window where Jack did, in fact, sit waiting for him.
He leaned out the window, fixing him with an unimpressed look. “What are you doin’ here so late? Don’t ya have a bed waitin’ at the lodge?”
Jack shrugged, but he was shaking like he’d seen a ghost. David’s expression went from annoyed to concerned as Jack spoke.
“Yeah, well, I couldn’t sleep none and I thought- well you like all that star stuff and the skies real clear so-” he gestured shakily, “I thought we could go watch some, may-maybe you could tell me all that stuff you learned about the patterns and stuff.”
David watched him carefully, watched the way he couldn’t sit still, the way he was glancing around like something would pop out to get him any second now. After a moment he sighed, “yeah… yeah okay Jackie. Lemme get dressed and I’ll meet ya on the roof, a’ight?”
Jack nodded quickly, already climbing the ladder. David watched him for a moment, concern twisting in his chest. He turned back to see Sarah watching him with tired eyes.
“That’s not what I meant when I said make him go away,” she said flatly.
David shrugged, “he doesn't look too good, Saz. I can’t just let him go wander the streets like this,” he argued, though Sarah didn’t look convinced. Thankfully, she didn’t push it, just rolled her eyes and laid back down.
“Whatever, don’t complain to me when you're exhausted tomorrow.”
He sighed, tugging a patched sweater over his undershirt and fastening his suspenders to his pants. She had a point, but he wasn’t about to admit it. Besides, he couldn’t just leave Jack to his own devices, not when he’s like this.
When he pulled himself up to the roof, the first thing he saw was Jack, still pacing with his hands still shaking. David tried to shake off his anxiety as he pushed himself to a stand, but the lingering clench of concern twisted around his heart. He didn’t like seeing Jack like this, it hurt too much.
“You’re gonna walk a hole in your shoes if you keep that up,” Jack jumped at his voice, but a shaky grin still found its way onto his face.
“Oh well, you could patch ‘em up for me, couldn’t ya Dave?”
David rolled his eyes, nudging Jack’s shoulder as he passed, “might could, question is would I?” he pulled one of his sheets down from the line before sitting down.
Jack just grinned, taking his place beside him, “‘course ya’ would, what kind a partner wouldn’t?”
He snorted, nudging Jack’s shoulder with his own. He was right, of course, Dave would do anything he could for him- Jack knew damn well he would too. Everyone did.
“Keep tellin’ yourself that, Kelly.”
Jack grinned, nudging him back before leaning on his hands to look at the sky. David followed suit- Jack was right. It was an incredibly clear night. He could see so many stars, he could even make out a few major constellations.
After a moment of silence Jack elbowed him in the ribs, pointing up to the stars, “That one there’s the big dipper, ain’t it?”
David followed his finger, trying to connect the pattern he was seeing. It was a bit difficult because his hands were still shaking. “Yeah, I think so- ya know the big dipper’s just a part of a bigger constellation, Ursa Major. A bear.”
Jack tilted his head, dropping his arm to his side and squinting at the sky, “don’t look like no bear to me.”
The other boy snorted, using his own hand to point out the rest of the pattern, “yeah see- there's the head and the big body, and those little stars make the legs- see? Bear.” Jack just tilted his head farther, blonde hair falling into his face.
“I don’t- hang on, yeah. Yeah I see what you mean, ‘s like one of them stick figures, right?”
“Yeah, basically, I mean it’s really abstract. See, right near it is Leo, it’s supposed to be a lion.”
Jack followed his finger again, watching as he pointed out the stars and traced the lines. Jack squinted at it, “yeah- it just looks like a bunch a dots to me”
David snorted, looking over to see Jack watching him with a soft smile. He tilted his head, nudging Jack’s shoulder again. As much as he would love to go on and on about the stars and the stories behind him, he had to find out what was wrong.
“So, I know ya didn’t come here lookin for a lesson on astronomy. What’s wrong with ya? Somethin’ happen with the boys?”
Jack froze, still staring at the sky. David could see him trying to keep his easy grin but it was forced. Somehow that hurt worse than a frown.
“Nah Dave, nothin’ happened with them…”  he trailed off, picking at the concrete beneath him.
“Well what’s wrong? And don’t say nothin- I know when you’re lyin.”
“Aw c’mon, you wound me! I don’t lie-”
David cut him off, rolling his eyes, “fine. ‘Improvin’ the truth’ or whatever- not much of a difference.”
Jack chuckles, leaning forward to rest his chin on his knees. “Yeah, you’se too observant for ya’ own good sometimes.”
“And you’re too stubborn for yours,” he shot back, taking a breath before continuing to speak, voice much softer this time, “what’s eatin’ at ya, Jackie?”
Jack shuddered, face hidden behind his messy bangs. He was quiet for a moment before he muttered something just under his breath.
“I can’t hear ya, Jack,” he said plainly, leaning forward to try and catch his eyes. Jack just looked away,
“My Pa…. he’s… Spots just got news that he got out a’ the pen,” David’s breath caught in his throat as Jack spoke, his words shaking.
“Oh shit,” he breathed. For once, The Walking Mouth had been rendered speechless. Jack laughed, rough and strained.
“Yeah.. oh shit..” he pulled his legs up to his chest and rested his chin on his knees. David set a hand on his shoulder, mind too frantic to linger on the way Jack tensed under his touch.
“Are you okay? He- he don’t know where you’se stayin’ does he? Shit- he can’t- Jackie..” now it was David’s turn to shake, the hand not gripping Jack’s shoulder running through his curly bed head. Jack shrugged, adamantly refusing to look at him. David cut himself off, words dying in his throat.
“Jackie…” he dropped the hand from his hair to his lap, “what are you gonna do?”
Jack shrugged again, but David could feel his shoulders begin to shake. David waited for a moment as Jack sucked in a shaky breath. “I don’t know Dave… I mean I don’t- I don’t think he knows where I’se stayin’ but what if he does?”
David let the hand on his shoulder drop to his back, rubbing small circles into the thin fabric of his shirt like his mama would do when he was in a state. He didn’t know what to say and his mind was racing to come up with something. Something to fix it, something to make it all better.
Nothing came to mind.
Jack was still shaking but he leaned into Davey’s touch, taking in shuddering breaths as he hid his face in his knees. “Dave I- I don’t know what I’m gonna do…”
When he finally looked up, there were tears in his eyes. Davey’s heart clenched as he sucked in a harsh breath. Jack never cried- sure he got upset, angry enough to punch a hole through a wall or anxious to where he couldn’t breathe, but he never cried.
Davey didn’t know what to do with that.
“I’m scared, Dave…”
That was the final straw. David gripped Jack’s shirt with shaking hands and jerked him into his long arms. He wrapped around him, using his height to his advantage as he enveloped Jack in a shaking embrace.
“Oh Jackie…” he buried his nose in his hair, pushing back his own tears.
Jack froze for a moment, just long enough for David to worry he’d gone too far before there were fingers digging into his back and Jack “Cowboy” Kelly was sobbing into his shoulder.
“I- fuck Dave-” David shushed him as he cried, arms tightening around him as the older boy cried his eyes out into his shoulder. He could feel his sleeves soaking through but that was the least of his worries right now. He was too busy trying to comfort the shaking mass of boy in his arms to give a dmn about his stupid shirt.
“It’s okay Jackie- let it all out. It’ll be okay. We’ll figure it out. You can stay with us or- or hell I'm sure Spotty would let ya crash at the Brooklyn Lodge if he shows up in ‘Hattan,” he spoke frantically into Jack’s hair, trying everything to reassure him that there was no way his father would get anywhere near him. Jack just shudder out something between a laugh and a sob.
“Spotty don’t let no one but Racer stay at the lodge,”
“Spotty ain’t gonna leave you on the streets Jackie,” David pulled back just a bit, ignoring the soft whine that came from Jack, “none of us will, for that matter. You’se family, Jackie, an’ family don’t let family suffer.”
Jack blinked at him, tears still flowing from his eyes. When he spoke it was broken and strained, “you’re too good to me, Dave-”
David cut him off, thumbing away his tears, “no- people just ain’t been good enough.”
Jack sniffled, leaning into his palm. “Can I…. shit, can I stay here? Just for tonight. I don’t.. I don’t wanna walk back alone…”
Davey managed a smile, hand still cupping his cheek, “Jackie, you can stay as long as you want.”

Modern Day Mulan
Pairing: Phillipa x Reader
Request: “could you do a pippa x reader where, usually R is the understudy for peggy/maria but for some reason something happened and she has to play alexander? and everyone is shocked bc they didnt know she could rap and they didn’t know she was playing alex? thank you!” - @criminallyhamilton
Word Count: 1.3k
“Hey Y/N, you love me right?” I heard Lin say to me, on the phone. This usually meant he needed me to do him a favor. “What do you need?” I asked him, blatantly.
“Can you come to my dressing room? I have a favor to ask you” he asked me. “Okay, I’ll be there in a second” I said, as I hung up my phone.
I walked down the hallway and then walked into Lin’s dressing room. “Hey, you look great today” he said, with the biggest smile on his face. “You’re just trying to get on my good side. Just ask me the favor” I told him.
“Well I need to you to go on tonight” he told me. I was Jasmine’s understudy, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary for me to have to perform for her.
“That’s literally my job, it’s not a big deal. I won’t be mad at you or anything. I’ll go get into my Peggy dress then” I said, as I went to leave his dressing room.
“That’s the catch” Lin said, hesitantly. “What do you mean? Do I have to go on for one of the other sisters?” I asked him, confused.
“I need you to go on for me” he said, bracing himself for my reaction. “Wait what? You? Like you need me to play Hamilton? Like the GUY?” I asked him.
“Please don’t hurt me” Lin said, sounding scared. “What about your understudy?” I asked him. “He’s sick” he told me. “But I’m a girl” I told him, since he failed to see the obvious conflict.
“Everyone will love it, I promise. And you were at the rehearsals and you know the Alexander track almost better than me” he told me. “Yeah I know the part, but people love this show and pay lots of money to see it. What if they think I don’t take it seriously” I asked him.
“If you get any backlash, I promise I’ll handle it” Lin reassured me. “Are you sure about this?” I asked him. “Absolutely” he told me.
“But...” I said, trying to come up another excuse as to why I couldn’t do it. “What? Are you nervous because you have a crush on a certain other cast member” Lin teased me.
“Come on Lin, what are you talking about?” I asked, totally pretending like I wasn’t head over heels for Pippa. “So you’re saying that you aren’t in love with Pip?” Lin asked, raising his eyebrows.
I tried to hold my ground, but I couldn’t keep a straight face. “Ha! I knew it” Lin said, pointing at me. “Okay, maybe you’re right. But there’s no way you can ever tell Pippa. Please promise me that” I begged him.
“Fine. But I don’t have to tell her. She’ll figure it out tonight, when you’re playing Hamilton and you have to kiss her after Helpless” he said, smirking. I froze, I had completely forgot about the kisses. I didn’t know how I was going to get through the show tonight.
“Well you better go get dressed, love is waiting for you” Lin teased. I rolled my eyes and walked to my dressing room to get ready.
Luckily Lin’s understudy wasn’t the tallest guy, his costume fit me pretty decently. It definitely wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
My nerves were through the roof. I would walk out and people would laugh. I knew they would. They would be unimpressed. They’d probably leave and not waste their time.
I was brought out of my thoughts by an announcement over the intercom that said it was time for places. I rushed to place, hoping none of the cast would see me, especially Pip.
I got to where I stood before the show and luckily no other cast members were near me. I heard Leslie start the show and I felt like I was going to puke. It felt like the song was going ten times faster than it ever went. Quickly arriving to the point where I would have to walk out on that stage.
Then it was my cue, I walked out on stage as Leslie said “What’s your name man?”. I sang my line and I saw most of the cast’s reactions. There was dead silence for a moment and I heard a thunderous applause from the audience.
I looked over and saw Pippa. I don’t think I had ever seen her eyes so wide. Then a smile grew on her face and she giggled to herself. “I love it” she mouthed to me.
Then the song went on as normal. Aside from their first reactions, no one gave it a second thought.
Then we got to the song that I had been dreading. It was time for Helpless.
I made it through most of the song and then we got to part where Pippa walks down the aisle. I felt like I was sweating buckets.
Pippa sang the last line as she stood in front of me. I smiled at her and she leaned in for the kiss. It was short and sweet and magical and fantastical and everything a kiss should be.
We pulled away and I heard Anthony start the intro to Satisfied. As Pippa and I walked over to the side of the stage, she whispered “you are doing amazing” to me.
The rest of the show went great and there were barely any mistakes. It was now the end of the show and we were doing our final bows.
Then before I knew it, the rest of the cast had taken a step back from me so I was in the front. Then I heard Pippa talking into her microphone.
“Let’s give it up for our first female Alexander Hamilton, give it up for Y/N. A Modern-Day Mulan” she said, I could see her smiling.
I took another bow and waved to the audience. Their cheers were deafening.
Then we all walked off the stage together. I quickly ran to the bathroom before I went to my dressing room. Then I was walking to my dressing room and I saw a bunch of people crowded both around and in my dressing room.
They saw me walking toward them and they all started to cheer. “So you playing Hamilton now?” Anthony asked me, slinging his arm around me.
“One time only, Lin asked me to do it” I told them all. “I really thought I was going crazy when you walked out. Don’t tell Lin, but you may have been better than him” Daveed said, and all of us started laughing.
“Now I have an onstage wife” Pippa said, hugging me from the side. “Here’s to Alexandra Hamilton” I said, earning laughter from the rest of my cast mates.
Most people left one by one and went back to their own dressing rooms. I noticed that Pippa stayed behind.
“That was some performance that you put on out there” she complimented. “Did you like it? It wasn’t too weird was it?” I asked her, we both sat down on the couch together. “No, it wasn’t weird at all. I loved it” she told me. “So I guess according to the theater code of conduct, we’re stage wives now” I said, giggling to myself.
“That’s not so bad. You’re a pretty good stage wife” she said, smiling at me. At this point, I felt her hand resting on my knee. “Pip, would you like to go out and get dinner sometime?” I asked her. “I would love that, I’m so glad you finally noticed that I liked you” Pippa said, laughing.
“Wait what? You liked me? How was I supposed to know that?” I asked her, shocked. “Are you kidding? I made it so obvious” she told me. “Well I made it obvious that I liked you” I told her. “Yes you did, but I wanted you to notice that I liked you back” she said, smirking.
“You knew this whole time and never said anything?” I asked her, in shock. “Of course I knew, but what can I say? I love to scheme” she said, giggling. Then she leaned in and kissed me on the cheek.

Warnings: swearing, some playful touching....
Word Count: 11k
All you wanted to do was change into comfy sweats, pour a heavy glass of wine, and forget about the awful week you had at work. But of course, there had to be something else to make this day even worse. When you were about 5 minutes away from your apartment it started down pouring. You cursed to yourself and picked up the pace.
Once you were in the comfort of your building, you let out a sigh of relief and made the trek up to your apartment. When you stepped out of the elevator you were met with a smiling face, one that normally would melt all of your worries away, but today, it only helped a little. You forced a smile back when his smile turned into a concerned frown.
"What happened to you?" He asked, stopping in front of you.
"I got caught in the rain on the way back from work."
He nodded and grabbed the bags out of your hands so you could unlock your door.
"Thanks, Tyson." You said with a small smile, hoping he would leave you be now. Normally you would welcome his company, but you really wanted that glass of wine and quiet night in by yourself. But it wasn't looking like that was the case when he strolled over to your fridge making himself at home. But that didn't stop you from wandering down the hall and taking a warm shower. Maybe then he would get the hint?
Nope. When you walked back out to the living room he was cozied up on the couch. A little bit of your annoyance dissipated when you saw the two wine glasses on the coffee table in front of him. So you grabbed one and plopped back into the couch.
"Rough week?" He asked, grabbing the other glass.
"You have no idea."
"I'm sorry, you wanna talk about it?"
"Not really.…" you sighed, "no game tonight?"
"Nah, we're leaving for a road trip tomorrow."
"Ohh nice, where to?"
"We're going to Florida."
"Ugh, I'm so jealous. I would love some nice weather right now."
Tyson chuckled, "yeah it might do you some good. You're looking a little pasty."
You rolled your eyes and pushed him playfully. "I meant mentally, but thank you for that."
"I know, I'm just messing…" he said patting your thigh "…are you sure you're okay?"
You sighed, "yeah, I just had an awful week at work, and my family has been harping on me a lot lately and I'm just over it all."
"I'm sorry, Y/n/N, what's going on at work?"
"My coworkers are just the worst. We had a huge project due this week and it seemed like I was the only one doing anything. And of course they got all of the credit. But it's fine, things should be better next week."
"What about your family?"
"Where do I even start…lately it's just been about me not having a boyfriend. I just don’t understand the fascination with my love life. My cousin is getting married soon and they really want me to bring someone…but like who cares? I'm 23, I don't see the urgency. But I also don't want to get shit for it the whole weekend. I don't know, whatever, it'll be fine, I'm just annoyed right now."
"When is the wedding?"
"A few weeks from now…why?"
"Is it the All Star break?"
"Ummmm…." you said while checking the dates "yes…why?!"
"I could be your date if you wanted…"
"No, Tyson, I can't ask you to do that."
"You're not asking, I'm offering."
"I don't know, Tys…"
"Come on, you'll have good company, you won't have to hear about how single you are…"
"Wait, you want to go as my boyfriend?"
"Well I don't think going as your friend would help…"
"You'd really do that?"
"Yes! I want to."
"Alright.…I don't know if it'll work, I'm not sure my family will even believe me."
"Oh, we can make it believable."
You eyed Tyson suspiciously but then gave in. "Okay…alright. I owe you big time."
"Let's just see how the weekend goes…" Tyson said with a smirk.
The rest of the night was spent watching New Girl. Tyson kept refilling your glass and you ended up pretty tipsy. Before Tyson left he helped you into bed and locked up your apartment on the way out.
~~~~~
The next morning, you woke up with a headache, cursing yourself for getting wine drunk. You loved being wine drunk in the moment but hated the hangover. You also cursed yourself at the thought of the little plan you and Tyson had come up with the night before. It's not that you weren't excited to spend an entire weekend with Tyson, it's just that you were pretty nervous about the whole thing. You had grown very close in your time as neighbors, but it was always just as friends. You'd be lying if you said you didn't have a crush on Tyson, but you always kept it to yourself because you didn't want to ruin their friendship, not to mention you didn't think you were his type. You were also nervous about your family buying their 'relationship'. Not only had you been telling your family that you were still single, but they would never believe that you were dating one of the Colorado Avalanche.
You tried to push it from your mind and focus on getting rid of the hangover. You made your way to the kitchen and guzzled down a glass of water accompanied by a few Tylenol and then rummaged through the fridge to make something to eat.
You posted up on the couch after you ate and watched movies all day. You were able to be a bit more productive on Sunday and cleaned your apartment and went grocery shopping for the week.
~~~~~
You didn't see Tyson until Wednesday night. He had texted you earlier in the day asking if you wanted to get take out. When you got home from work, Tyson was already in your apartment with the take out.
"I could kiss you right now, I'm starving." You said as you dropped your bags on the floor and sat down at the table."
Tyson smirked, "it might be good practice…"
"Oh my god, I actually kind of forgot about that…we should talk about our game plan."
"Yes, I like to excel so I need everything there is to know about your family so I'm fully prepared."
You rolled your eyes, "of course you do…well, I mean how long have we been dating for? I've been telling my family I'm single, but I'm sure I could come up with some excuse why I haven't told them."
"Yeah, it might be kind of weird to take your boyfriend of two weeks to a family wedding…"
"Okay, so how long do you think?"
"6 months?"
"Is that too long?"
Tyson shrugged, "I don't know, I think that's fine."
"Alright, and I think we should stick to saying we met through being neighbors."
"Good idea, less room for slip ups…what are you going to use as an excuse for not telling them?"
"I guess maybe that I wanted to feel things out and also because you're kinda famous?"
"Kinda?! I'm hurt."
You giggled at Tyson's dramatics. "Okay, sorry, you're famous. Fully famous."
"Much better…so let's start with the family lessons. I know you have 3 brothers, Charlie, Ben, and Jack. Your parents are Kate and Steve… but I think that's all I got."
"I'm impressed! Yes, Ben is the oldest, he's a lawyer, he's married to Hailey who is a nurse. Charlie is next, he's a teacher, he's engaged to Casey, who is also a teacher. Then there is Jack, he's in his second year of med school and his girlfriend is Carly, she's a physical therapist. Then my parents, Kate and Steve. My dad is a lawyer, Ben works at his firm. And my mom is a nurse. Do you want me to write this stuff down?"
"No way, I'll get it. Just keep going."
"Alright...the cousin that is getting married is on my dad's side. His name is Tom, his fiancé's name is Lauren. Tom does something with finance, I'm not exactly sure what, and Lauren is a social worker. Tom has one sister, Maddie, she's an aspiring actress…" Tyson stifled a laugh at your face when you said her occupation. "My grandparents are Dave and Shelly, they're both retired, but my grandfather was a lawyer, it’s his firm that my dad and Ben work for. And I think I can just introduce you to everyone else as we go…"
"Alright, got it."
"Do you?" You questioned, not believing him.
"Okay, fine, not yet. But I will."
~~~~~
The next few weeks went by faster than you had wanted. As the wedding grew nearer you became more and more nervous. You had let everyone know that you would be bringing your boyfriend, and of course, the questions rolled in. You told them what you had practiced with Tyson, you weren't sure where things were going to go and didn't want to get their hopes up, and because he's a professional athlete you wanted to make sure everything was sound in their relationship before you went public. Although your mom was upset that you didn’t confide in her earlier, they were happy that you had found a boyfriend. It definitely made you feel guilty for lying, but you were able to get over it.
A few days before you were leaving, you went to Tyson's game. You weren't able to go all of the time, but you had a blast when you did. You had become friends with a few of the WAGs and of course a bunch of the guys.
They were all going out after the game to celebrate the beginning of the All Star break and Tyson had invited you to go so you went down to the locker rooms after the game to wait for him.
"Y/N!" You turned at the familiar voice and smiled and gave Andre a hug.
"Hey, Burky, good game!"
"Thanks, are you coming out with us?"
"I am!!"
"Good, Tys is more fun when you're around." He said, winking. You laughed a bit before a few of the others guys joined and talked about the plans for this evening.
A few minutes later, Tyson came up behind you and wrapped his arm around you.
"Hey, Tys!" You greeted him happily.
"Hey, babe." You rolled your eyes at his choice of words. "What?! I'm just trying to get into character." He defended, which made the guys laugh. They all knew about the arrangement and most of them were hoping this weekend would be the push you needed to actually date.
"You ready?" Tyson asked. You nodded and bid farewells until later.
Tyson drove you back to you building and you split ways to get ready.
"How long do you need?" He asked.
"I'll be ready in like 20??"
"Alright, I'll come over in a half hour." He said chuckling at himself, which caused you to roll your eyes but nod your head and go inside.
An hour later you were making your way through the crowd at the club to find everyone else. Tyson had gone to get them drinks while you sat down next to EJ and Landy. Landy was grilling you about the weekend, him being the number one supporter of you guys actually dating. Luckily he let up a bit on  you when Tyson came back and started in on him.
You kept downing drinks as the night went on and ended up being very drunk. Tyson had to help you through the club and he pretty much carried you to your apartment. He was nervous to leave you alone, so he ran over to his apartment to change and came back to stay with you for the night.
~~~~~
The next morning, you groaned as you peeled your eyes open. You were slightly confused about the arm draped over you because you didn't remember talking to any guys at the club. You relaxed when you looked over and saw that it was Tyson.
"Good morning, sleeping beauty." He said with a smirk.
"Morning….what are you doing here?"
"You were pretty loaded…I was nervous you might throw up in your sleep so I stayed with you."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to get so drunk…"
"I know, it's all good. You just will really be kicking yourself in the car today!"
"Ugh, don't remind me." You said and rolled back over.
"10 more minutes! Then you need to get up and get ready." Tyson reminded.
"Okay, mom." You muffled into the pillow as you fell back asleep.
An hour later you had the car packed up and were on the way. Thankfully, Tyson offered to drive, knowing your current state and just the fact you didn't love driving anyway. You played the music, luckily you had similar taste, so you jammed out for most of the 4 hour drive. You also quizzed him on your family, and just as he claimed, he remembered it all.
Tyson noticed that you had grown quiet in the last half hour. He reached over and grabbed your hand.
"Hey," he started softly, "it's going to be fine."
"I know, I'm just nervous. Even though they're happy I have a boyfriend, they can be so critical and rude. I'm going to apologize in advance for anything that they say."
"I think I can handle them…I'm used to criticism."
"I know…I just, even though we aren't actually dating, you are one of my best friends and I don't want them to scare you off."
"Don't worry about that…I'm not going anywhere." He said and gave your hand a gentle squeeze before pulling it away. You smiled at him and started to realize that this might not have been the best idea for your sake. You had been able to keep your feelings at bay, but this weekend might change that. You push those thoughts out of your mind as Tyson pulls the car into your driveway. You panicked a bit when you saw all of the cars in the driveway. It had been your understanding that Jack was going to be the only of your brothers home tonight and everyone else would be over tomorrow. Tyson noticed your panic and grabbed your hand again.
"What's wrong?"
"My mom told me Jack and Carly were going to be here tonight, not everyone else…"
"Well that's okay, we'll get it over with."
"I know, I just wasn't prepared for this. I'm sorry, I'll stop freaking out."
Tyson chuckled, "don't apologize. But don't worry either, okay? We got this." He reassured you and kissed your forehead. You blushed at the act, you guys had cuddled before and obviously shared the same bed, but this felt different, and it just made you even more nervous.
You both got out and grabbed your bags before approaching the door. You didn't even have time to put your bag down when it burst open.
"Y/N!!! I've missed you so much!" Your mom exclaimed while giving you a tight hug.
"Hi, mom, I missed you too." Once she let go, she turned to Tyson and you introduced the two. "Mom, this is Tyson, Tys, this is mom, Kate."
"Oh, it's so nice to meet you!!!" Your mom exclaimed again, pulling Tyson in for a hug.
"It's nice to meet you too, Mrs. Y/L/N. I've heard so much about you."
"Oh, please, call me Kate." She said as she let go. "Well, come in! Everyone's dying to meet you!"
You glanced at Tyson and he winked in return. You followed your mom inside and you put your bags down and went into the living room where everyone was sitting. Tyson put his arm on the small of your back and you leaned into him as you walked into the room.
Your brothers all shot up and surrounded you in a hug, separating you and Tyson. You rolled your eyes but laughed and welcomed their embrace. Once they finally let you go, your dad stepped up and gave you a hug and kissed your cheek. "Hey, baby girl. It's nice to see you."
"It's good to see you too, dad, I've missed you." He gave you one more quick squeeze and let you go so you could introduce Tyson to everyone.
"Well, everyone, this is Tyson…" At this point your brother's partners had joined them. "…Tyson, this is my dad, Steve, Ben and Hailey, Charlie and Casey, and Jack and Carly."
Tyson shook all of their hands as you went down the line.
"It's nice to meet you all." Tyson said with a smile.
"It's nice to meet you too, we're glad she's finally bringing someone home to us!" Your dad joked, causing you to roll your eyes.
"Okay, well, we're gonna bring our stuff upstairs. See you in a few." You said grabbing Tyson's hand and dragging him back into the hallway.
"No funny business!" Your brother Charlie called, laughing at himself. You heard Casey scold him and smiled to yourself.
You led Tyson to your old room, telling him you'll give him a tour once you put your bags down.
"That wasn't so bad…" He said as you plopped down on the bed.
"Yet…it's been 5 minutes."
Tyson chuckled and cupped your face with hands, "hey, what did I tell you? Stop worrying."
"I know, I know. I just can't help it."
"Come on, let's go. I'm ready for the grand tour." He said taking your hands and pulling you up. You sighed, but obliged and led him out of the room.
"….and this is the kitchen!" You said as you finished the tour. Your mom smiled at the two of you as you entered the room.
"Your home is very beautiful, Kate." Tyson said to your mom.
"Oh, you're too sweet…do you mind helping me finish up dinner, Y/n/N?"
"Sure. Tys do you want to help?" You asked, not really wanting to throw him to the wolves with your brothers in the next room.
"Yeah, I'll help. What do you need us to do?" He asked sweetly.
"Can you two finish putting the salad together? All of the stuff is on the counter over there."
You nodded and went to the sink to wash your hands and then you and Tyson started cutting up vegetables. You actually were having a lot of fun, Tyson was trying out some of his new jokes on your mom, which she loved. The whole scene felt very domestic, and of course you couldn't help but think about your feelings for him. You were brought back to reality when Tyson gave you a questioning look and mouthed "are you okay?" You forced a smile back and nodded and went back to cutting vegetables.
Once the three of you finished up, your mom called everyone into the dining room for dinner. Everyone took their seats and dug right in.
"This is delicious, mom." Jack complimented with his mouth full. Everyone chuckled and agreed, your mom blushing from the compliments.
"Well, I had good helpers." She said acknowledging you and Tyson. You both smiled and went back to eating.
You were starting to get nervous because your brothers hadn't really said much to Tyson. They had always been very overprotective and tried to scare off the guys you brought around and even though Tyson wasn't actually your boyfriend you were really nervous for what they might say. You knew better than to think that maybe they grew out of that stage, so it just made you more and more anxious for when it was going to come.
You caught Jack's gaze and he gave you a devilish grin. You gave him a warning look but he just shook his head. This was it. It was coming and there was nothing you could do to stop it. You looked at Tyson and he gave you a small smile and squeezed your thigh under the table.
"So, Tyson…" Charlie started "…hockey, huh?"
You shot a glare at your brother but he just smiled sweetly.
"Uh, yeah, I've played ever since I was young."
"How reliable is it to play professionally?" Ben asked this time.
"Ben…" Your mom scolded.
"It's okay, that's a fair question." Tyson defended. "I would say it's pretty secure, as long as I'm playing well and staying healthy."
"What happens if you get injured?" Jack asked.
"Well, if it's minor I'll get treatment until it's healed and then start playing again."
"And if it's not?"
"Well, I guess, I'd be done playing hockey."
"Okay, that's enough." You said glaring at all of your brothers.
"We just want to make sure you're in good hands, Y/n/N." Jack said sweetly.
"I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself with my own salary, so Tyson's job security shouldn't be of concern." That shut them up for a little, but you knew they weren't done. Not with this dinner and certainly not for the rest of the weekend. Tyson squeezed your thigh again, that definitely being his way of telling you not to get too worked up.
Thankfully, your mom changed the subject to talk about plans for the weekend, but that didn't hold for very long.
"So, Tyson…" Jack started this time "…it must be pretty demanding being a professional athlete, do you even see Y/N that much?" You shot him another glare but he just kept smiling.
"Yeah, it can be, we live across the hall from each other so I pretty much see her whenever I'm home."
"Why does it matter to you how often we see each other?" You asked.
"We're just looking out for you, Y/n/N." Charlie defended.
"Well stop, you're just being rude."
"Alright, let's not fight at the table…" Your mom stated, trying to keep the peace. "Hailey, how are things at the hospital?"
You were thankful she changed the subject again, but you still weren't convinced it would put a total end to the grilling.
And you were right, a few minutes later, Jack spoke up again.
"Tyson, you must have a lot of girls after you, being a professional athlete and all."
You didn't even give Tyson the chance to defend himself before you lost it.
"Are you kidding me right now, Jack?! I cannot believe you would even ask that! Can you not be a dick for like one fucking weekend?!" And you stormed off up the stairs.
Tyson excused himself and followed after you. You sat on the bed, too mad to even cry, which you were thankful for. It was embarrassing enough that Tyson just had to sit through and witness what just happened.
"I'm so sorry, Tys." You apologized as he sat down next to you.
"No need to apologize, Y/n/N. It's not your fault your brother is a dick." You cracked a smile at his comment.
"I just didn't think he'd be like that. They've always been super overprotective, but that was just too much."
"It's really okay. Honestly, I can't say that I wouldn't have asked something similar to my sister's boyfriend. I get it. You're their baby sister, they just want what's best for you. I can take their crap, alright?"
"You're too good." You said with a huff, which made Tyson chuckle.
"Only for you, babe." He said and kissed your forehead. You both settled back on the bed and he tucked you into his side.
A little while later there was a knock on your door. You sat up a little bit and told them to come in. It was your mom.
"Hi, sweetie. How are you doing?"
"I'm fine, I just wish Jack wasn't such an asshole."
"I know, I'm sorry, and I'm sorry Tyson that he was acting that way."
"It's okay, I understand, I have a younger sister."
"Well, I think he feels bad he upset you like that…"
"Good." You stated, causing your mom and Tyson to chuckle.
"Alright, well I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Goodnight, you two."
"Goodnight, mom."
"Goodnight, Kate."
"I, um, don't usually freak out like that so, I'm sure it really made them feel bad…" You stated.
"Yeah, now I know to never piss you off."
You laughed at Tyson and cuddled back into his side. "That kind of freak out is reserved for my brothers. You probably won't ever be on the receiving end."
"Good to know." He said chuckling back. "You wanna watch New Girl?"
"Sure, I'm gonna go get changed first."
The rest of the night was spent watching Netflix, cuddled up in your bed. No apology from Jack but you didn't really expect one. He'll probably half ass one in the morning, and you'll forgive him, you always do.
~~~~~~
You were right. When you went downstairs for breakfast, it was just Jack in the kitchen. He looked over at you and held his arms out, signifying a hug. You looked at him and raised your eyebrows, awaiting those magic words.
"Come on, are you really going to make me say it?"
"Yes! You were so awful last night. You really owe an apology to Tyson…"
"Fine, I'm sorry, Y/n/N. I took it too far."
"Yes, you did. But I forgive you…as long as you cool it for the rest of the weekend!"
"I will, I promise."
"Thank you." You beamed and gave him a hug.
"Aww, how sweet!" Charlie cooed as he interrupted you and Jack.
"Hey, I think you and Ben also owe her an apology."
"No way, we didn't take it as far as you did." Charlie defended just as Ben walked in.
"Yeah, I agree, we were pretty mild." Ben agreed.
"Would it really be that bad to apologize to me?" You asked, fully knowing the answer.
"Yes." Ben and Charlie answered at the same time.
You rolled your eyes but went about your business.
"Where is lover boy anyway?" Charlie asked.
You shrugged, "still sleeping."
"Not out for an early morning run?" Jack teased, you rolled your eyes again.
"Stop!! You said you'd cool it!"
"Relax, I'm just teasing."
You rolled your eyes as you sat down at the table and your brothers joined around you.
"But seriously, Y/n/N. Are you happy?"
"Yes, Ben, I'm very happy. He's really good to me."
"Okay good, then we're happy. But as soon as he does something to hurt you…he's done for."
"I know, I know. Although…he is a professional athlete, are you sure you could take him?" You teased.
"Please, it's no contest." Charlie defended which made you laugh.
Just as he was about to throw a grape at you, Tyson walked in the kitchen.
"Good morning, Tys!" You called from the table. He came over and sat next to you and greeted your brothers. "Are you hungry? I can make you some eggs, or we have cereal, I could make pancakes?"
"How come you didn't offer to make any of us that stuff??" Jack whined. You just rolled your eyes and looked back at Tyson.
"I'll have some eggs, but I can help you." He said and the two of you got up and started cooking.
Everyone else ended up joining you in the kitchen so you ended up making breakfast for everyone else too, but you didn't mind. It was fun to hang out with everybody and you were glad that your brothers were done with third degree.
After breakfast you and Tyson went back upstairs to showered for the day. You wanted to show him around your hometown and have a chill day because the next two days were going to be filled with wedding stuff.
When you walked back into your room after your shower, Tyson was lying on the bed looking at his phone. You were just in a towel and while you and Tyson were pretty comfortable with each other, you expected him to go take his shower so you could change. He looked up at you and smirked when he saw your attire.
"You gonna give me a show?"
"Tyson!" You cried. "We're at my parents…and it's 10 in the morning."
"So you're saying you would though?"
"Seriously, that's what you took from that?"
Tyson smirked at you and moved to get off the bed. You watched him as he rummaged through his things and then started to move past you to go to the bathroom. Just as you thought you were safe, he slapped your ass and hurried out of the room. You gasped, though it wasn't very hard, you were not expecting that. You wanted to mad but you couldn't help but smile. If he wanted to play it like that this weekend, you were gonna give it right back.
You decided to only get half-dressed to start…you put on a sexy bra and super cheeky underwear. Once satisfied with your look, you laid down on the bed and waited for Tyson to come back. You didn’t have to wait long, a few minutes later you heard him opening the door.
"Hey, do you know if there is anymore-- whoa." You smirked at the thought of Tyson's face, you couldn't see because you were lying on your stomach so your ass was showing. What you didn't bargain for was for him to be so composed and not let it get to him. So just as you were about to turn around to see what he was doing, you felt a much harder slap to your ass.
"Ow, Tyson! What the hell!"
"Hey, you put your ass out here like that…I can't help it." He smirked and plopped down next to you.
"You're the worst." You grinned as you got up to finish getting dressed.
"You ready?" You asked a little while later after both of you had gotten dressed.
"Yes ma'am, let's get to it. Lots of history to see."
"History? I would hardly call this town historical."
"Yeah, your history." He said with a sweet smile. Your heart melted and you were really starting to wonder if you would make it through this weekend.
You started off by showing him the spot where everyone went to party, you didn't stay long because it was pretty cold, but he thought it was funny that a random spot in the woods was where you used to get drunk. "Hey, you do what you gotta do in a small town." You defended before moving on. You then took him by the high school, you couldn't really spend much time there either because kids were in school. Next you brought him 'downtown'. You walked around going into different little shops and boutiques. Then you brought him to your favorite place to eat for lunch.
The two of you talked a lot about high school and how different it was for both of you. You had never really talked much about your past during your friendship so it was nice to get to know each other a little better.
"So, tell me all about high school Y/N." He said once the two of you had ordered your food.
You sighed, "what do you want to know?"
"I don't know…were you popular? A jock? A nerd?"
"I mean…I guess I was popular…I played sports, I wouldn't identify as a nerd but I did do well in school…"
"Wait you played sports?"
"Yeah, soccer, hockey, and lacrosse."
"I'm sorry, what? You played hockey?? How come you never told me?"
"I don't know…I guess it never came up."
"We talk about hockey all the time…"
"Yeah, you playing hockey…professional hockey…not high school girls hockey. Besides, I really wasn't very good soo..."
"So what?! I can't believe you didn't tell me…I'm taking you skating as soon as we get back to Denver so you can show me your moves."
You shook your head, "nope. No way."
"Why not?!"
"Because I'm really not very good, and that's why I've never mentioned it because I knew that you would make me go skating with you."
"Oh come on, I seriously doubt you're that bad."
"Compared to you, yeah, I am."
Tyson rolled his eyes. "You are so ridiculous…so what else did you do in high school?"
"Well, I was in chorus…and don't ask me to sing for you because I will not be doing that."
"Come on, you're no fun." Tyson whined.
You laughed at him and shook your head, "yeah I guess I left all of it here."
"Anything else that I don't know about you that you want to share with me?? Crazy ex boyfriends?? Girlfriends??"
"I guess I should probably tell you…I do have an ex who will be going to the wedding…we dated for a few years but he was kinda shitty.."
"Shitty?"
You sighed, not really wanting to get into it but you knew that you should give him an explanation because you really didn't know what would happen this weekend. "It was a pretty unhealthy relationship…of course I didn't really know that at the time. It wasn't until I went off to college that I started realizing that something was wrong. I tried to end things while I was away but he wouldn't really let it happen so I tried again when I went back home for break and he, like, freaked out…and um, hit me, so I called my friend to come get me… I was able to get out of the relationship with some help but nothing ever really happened to him because I guess he was having drinking issues…"
"Wait, he hit you…and your family is still bringing him around?"
"Yeah...my uncle is really good friends with his dad so…"
"I'm so sorry, Y/n/N…are you gonna be okay this weekend?"
"It's okay.…it's been a few years now. I haven't really seen him much, I usually avoid the gatherings he goes to. I'm not really sure what will happen this weekend…"
"Well I won't leave your side the whole time. I'll protect you."
"Thanks, Tys. I'm actually so thankful you came with me this weekend."
"Of course. You do so much for me all the time…it's the least I could do."
Even though he meant that in the best way possible, and despite all of the flirty comments and advances, it just reinforced that he really was just here as your friend.
You spent the rest of lunch talking about random stuff. Tyson took his phone out and started taking a picture of you.
"Stop! What are you doing?" You said covering your face.
"Put your hands down!! This is great lighting. Smile, look cute."
You relented and let him take your picture. "You better not put that anywhere."
Tyson smirked, "too late."
"Tyson! I’m gonna kill you." You checked your phone and sure enough he tagged you in his Instagram story.
"It's fine, you look really pretty!"
"Okay, but you have so many followers! They're going to think we're dating."
"We are...aren't we?"
You rolled your eyes and focused back on your food.
"I can take it down if you really want me to, but that might look extra sus."
"No, it's fine. I just will kill you if you do it again."
There wasn't really much else to show him so after you finished you headed back to your parent's house.
Your parents were the only ones home so you greeted them and headed up to your room. Tyson went to the bathroom so you took the opportunity to change into some comfy clothes and put on Netflix. You didn't acknowledge him when he walked back into your room but he had the same idea you did, he stripped down and put on some sweats before lying next to you in bed. Normally you would snuggle up next to him but you decided you needed to start distancing yourself a bit otherwise you were going to end up getting hurt.
You ended up falling asleep and woke up an hour later and woke up with your head on Tyson's shoulder. Figures, you knew that would happen. You turned your head and noticed that he was asleep too and he had wrapped his arm around your waist. You sighed as you grabbed your phone from your nightstand and settled back into bed, not wanting to wake him up.
You opened Instagram and were met with hundreds of notifications. Luckily, you were private, but you had a ton of follower requests. Thanks, Tyson. You scrolled through them, most of them being random girls, a few cute guys that you took the chance and let them follow you. There were a few people with the little blue check mark, mostly other guys in the NHL, but one in particular caught your eye. Mat Barzal. You knew that Tyson was friends with him, and you'd be lying if you denied thinking he was attractive. You had always had a little crush on him, so you accepted his request and kept scrolling through. A few minutes later, you received a DM from Mat. Your heart started racing as you went to open it.
Tyson didn't tell me his neighbor friend was so cute ;)
Okay, now you were freaking out, you did not expect that. Obviously Tyson had told him that he was going to a wedding with you. But it was also more proof that Tyson thought of you as just a friend. I mean, he would have told Mat that he liked you, right? You were interrupted from your thoughts by Tyson shifting next to you.
"Who's that?" He asked groggily.
"Um, no one." You said quickly exiting out of Instagram.
"Obviously not." He said grabbing your phone from your hand and getting out of bed.
"Tyson! Give me my phone back."
"I just want to see who's DMing you." You tried grabbing it from his hands but he held you back with one arm. "Mat?" He asked, growing serious.
"You're the one who posted the story…I'm getting lots of requests from guys in the NHL."
"But Mat?"
"You're acting as if I have any control over this."
"You know he's my friend right?"
"Tyson, he messaged me, I don't know what you want me to do."
"Are you gonna respond?"
"I don't know, I don't really know what to say back to that."
"Do you want to?"
"Well I don't want to be rude, but if it's going to bother you I guess I won't."
"No, I'm sorry, you can respond. I guess it just caught me off guard." He said giving you your phone and leaving the room.
You huffed and sat down on the bed. You were so confused. Why would Tyson react like that if he just liked you as a friend? This weekend was really messing with your head and you were kind of regretting bringing him with you. You had already accepted that you should get over your feelings for him, but now you were worried that it was going to mess with your friendship.
You contemplated what to say back to Mat. You didn't want to upset Tyson but you also didn't want to leave him on read, it might be kind of awkward if you guys ever met in person.
Tyson came back a few minutes later and seemed to be in a little bit of a better mood.
"Did you respond?" He asked, sitting down next to you.
"Not yet, I don't know what to say…any ideas?"
"You wanna mess with him a bit?" He asked with a smirk.
"I don't know, Tys, I don't know him."
"But I do…he'll think it's funny."
You sighed and handed him your phone, "fine."
Tyson took it happily and started typing away.
"What are you saying?" You asked, trying to look over his shoulder. He moved the phone so you could see it.
You know Tyson?
You looked at Tyson quizzically, "where are you going  with this?"
"I'm gonna make it seem like you don't know who he is."
"Tys, that's just mean."
"Relax, it'll be fine."
You only had to wait a few minutes before he replied again.
Wait, Tys hasn't mentioned me?
Tyson started laughing when he read it and you just rolled your eyes, wishing you had never agreed to this.
No…sorry :( Tyson cackled as he sent back,
"It’s not as funny as you think it is, you know."
"Oh, it's hilarious."
Damn, well then I guess I'm gonna have to get you to fall for me all by myself
You laughed as you watched Tyson react to the response.
"Guess that didn't work as well as you thought it would." You teased, grabbing your phone.
"Wait, let me say one more thing!!"
"No, you've done enough. I'm telling him it was a joke."
"You are absolutely no fun." Tyson whined.
You shrugged, "sorry!"
Hey, I’m so sorry, Tyson saw that you DM'd me and thought that it would be funny to mess with you…
I know who you are haha
Of course he did…what a relief though, you are very pretty I would love to meet you sometime :)
I'm sure we could make that happen…as long as Tyson doesn't get in the way.
"What are you saying?" Tyson asked when he saw you grinning at your phone like a teenager.
"Why must you know everything?"
"Because you're both my friends…"
"Fine." You said and showed him what you said. "Looks like you have to introduce us."
Tyson rolled his eyes, "we'll see."
You chose to just ignore him because you didn't want to argue anymore.
"We should probably go socialize…" You said sighing and getting up.
Tyson let out a sigh too and rummaged through his things to find a shirt to put on. Once he put one on the two of you headed downstairs.
Your mom, Casey, and Carly were in the kitchen getting started on dinner. You asked if they needed help but they said no so you went into the living room where your dad, Jack, and Charlie were all watching TV. You took the open loveseat and Tyson put his arm around you and you cuddled into his side. Although things were a little weird between the two of you, you had to keep appearances up. There wasn't much talking going on, although you were glad that your brothers were being pleasant with Tyson.
Tyson was focused on the TV while you were scrolling through Twitter. You hadn't even noticed that Tyson was now looking at your phone with you until he squeezed your shoulder and laughed at the tweet you just liked. You relaxed a little bit more in his arms, glad that things were becoming more comfortable again.
Dinner was much better than it was the night before. Everyone was laughing and making jokes, no one was grilling Tyson…
You helped your mom clean up while everyone else went into the living room to set up for a game of charades.
"So, how are you?" Your mom asked.
"Um, I'm good…why?"
"What? I can't ask how you are?"
"Well, you can, it just seemed a little out of the blue."
"I haven't really had any time alone with you…"
"I know, I'm sorry. I just worry about leaving Tyson alone with them…"
"How come you never told me about him?"
"I told you mom, I didn't know if things were serious or not, and we wanted to keep it kind of private, hockey fans can be crazy."
"I know, but I'm your mother. I want you to feel like you can tell me things like that."
"I do mom, I really do. I'm sorry, I should have told you earlier."
"Things are good with you two?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Things seemed a little tense tonight…"
"We just had a little disagreement earlier, but it's all good."
"Okay...he seems like a really great guy, Y/n/N, and the way he looks at you…it reminds me of how my father looked at my mother…he's really in love with you sweetie. I hope this works out for you two."
You smiled sweetly at your mom and gave her a hug, even though that was the last thing you wanted to hear right now. At this point, you had stopped getting your hopes at little signs because they never ended up meaning anything.
Once you were finished cleaning up, you and your mom joined everyone else in the living room. You sat down next to Tyson and he put his arm around and kissed the side of your head. You were not looking forward to this game, your family was very competitive, and although you knew Tyson was too, it could get out of hand pretty quickly.
You were split into two teams, thankfully you were with Tyson, Charlie, Casey, and your dad. Jack and Ben are the worst to have on your team because they are the most competitive and they get super pissed when you're not performing well. Your dad and Charlie were also really good at charades so you'd probably win.
It actually ended up being a lot of fun. Thankfully, Jack and Ben didn't get too worked up and of course everyone was drinking so everyone was laughing and having a good time. Your parents called it quits when Ben and Hailey left to go back to their house. The rest of you stayed up and talked for a while before everyone slowly tucked in for the night.
When you and Tyson finally laid down you were exhausted.
"Well tonight went much better than last…" Tyson said, pulling you closer to him.
"Yes...thankfully. I was a little nervous, Jack and Ben can be a little crazy when it comes to games."
Tyson chuckled, "you're one to talk…"
You scoffed, "hey! I am not that competitive."
"Um, I have a monopoly board that would say differently."
"Oh my god, okay, I was really drunk…I don't usually get like that."
"Whatever you say…"
You shook your head and reached over to turn the lamp off.
"Do we have to be up early tomorrow?" Tyson asked.
"No, I don't think so. I think we have to be at the church by 3."
"Perfect, I want to sleep in, I'm exhausted."
"I know, me too."
"Are you gonna sleep in?" He asked, wrapping his arm around your waist.
"I'm gonna try…why?"
"It was hard to keep sleeping once you got up…"
"You want me to stay in bed until you get up?"
"Pretty please?" He asked, sticking his lip out.
You shook your head and chuckled, "yes, I can do that, but not if it's super late!!"
"Okay, deal. Night, Y/n/N."
"Goodnight, Tys."
The next morning you were kicking yourself for the deal you made. You were so tangled up in Tyson it was going to be impossible to even move. You tried to carefully grab your phone so you could see what time it was. 9 am. You relaxed and began checking all of your social media. You were careful to avoid your DMs, you didn't want him to wake up and see anything that would upset him. Although you still wanted to know why he actually cared so much about Mat messaging you.
A little while the arm around your waist tightened and Tyson's head poked up.
"So much better when you're in bed with me." He said groggily. "…just wish we were naked."
"Tyson!" You said shooting up to a sitting position. You looked over at his smug little face. "You are such an asshole."
"You love me." He shrugged, putting an arm around you.
You rolled your eyes, "you disgust me."
You laid there quietly for a few minutes before Tyson spoke up again, "you ready for today?"
"Pretty sure that should be a question for the bride…"
“`Yes but the whole reason I’m here this weekend is to help you get through it.” “Okay, yeah...I’m sure it’ll be fine. Seeing you with me should shut everyone up.”
A smug grin appeared on Tyson’s face, “I can’t argue with you there…”
You shook your head and laughed before growing serious again. “I just am a little nervous about seeing Jake...I don’t know if he’s still drinking and I’m worried he’s going to cause a scene.”
“Well if he does than fuck that. It won’t be your fault either so don’t feel bad if he does.” “I know, it’s just, everyone has always pitied him and let things slide because he’s an alcoholic. I just don’t think my family will see it as his fault...they’ll blame it on me for bringing some new guy around even though that’s all they talk about. I just can’t win with them.”
“Okay, well let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here. Hopefully everything will be fine and we won’t have to worry about it. If it does, we’ll deal with it then, okay? Just try and relax and have fun. Weddings are supposed to be fun.”
“I know...thanks, Tys. I know I keep saying this but I really do appreciate you being here with me.”
“And I will keep telling you that it’s no big deal, sweets.” You smiled as he kissed your forehead. You were quiet for a few moments before he spoke up again. “So...have you heard from Mat at all?”
“Not since last night…” You said softly while Tyson just nodded. “Why?” Tyson shrugged, “just wondering.” You gave him a pointed look. “What? I am!”
“How come you seemed so upset about it last night?” “I didn’t mean to seem upset, I just, I don’t know, it caught me off guard. But I know you think he’s attractive so go for it I guess.” He said enthusiastically.
“Okay, well I don’t care what you say, it clearly bothers you in some way, so I’m not going to talk to him.”
Tyson rolled his eyes but didn’t argue so you figured that meant there was some truth in your statement.
You laid in bed for about another hour talking about random stuff before you got up to shower and start getting ready.
“Alright,” you started as you untangle yourself from Tyson, “I’m gonna get in the shower.” “Wanna save some water and shower together?” He asked with a cheeky grin, grabbing your wrist to keep you in place.
“Absolutely not.” You said as you shrugged his hand off of yours and walked out of the room.
Tyson looked up when you walked back into your room. He opened his mouth but you cut him off before he could even say anything.
“Whatever you’re about to say, the answer is no. Go get in the shower.”
Tyson pouted, but did as he was told, not before grabbing your ass on the way out with a little giggle. You rolled your eyes and went about getting ready.
You couldn’t help but glance over at Tyson as he strolled back through the door a few minutes later. The towel he had wrapped around his waist was starting to fall off of his hips and you had a clear picture of his V line. You hadn’t really noticed that you were staring until you heard Tyson start talking to you.
“Like what you see?”
You blushed and rolled your eyes turning back towards the mirror to finish your makeup.
Once you were finally done with your makeup, Tyson had stepped out of the room so you took the opportunity to put your dress on. You slipped it on and tried your best to zip it up but you couldn’t quite reach. When you heard the door open again you turned to ask Tyson for help.
“Hey Tys can you help me-” You stopped when you saw him staring at you. “Is everything okay? Is there something wrong with my dress?” You asked, starting to panic a bit.
“No, no, not at all. I, um, you just look really beautiful.”
You visibly relaxed and smiled at him. “Thanks, Tys. Could you help me zip up though?” He nodded and stepped towards you and turned back around so he could help you. You could feel Tyson’s breath on the back of your neck. Once he zipped you up you turned around slowly, Tyson not moving a muscle. You looked up at him, his face just inches from yours. He cupped your chin in his hand and he brought your face to his and kissed you softly. You closed your eyes and welcomed his lips on yours.
Tyson pulled away after a few moments and turned away. “Shit, I’m sorry, I…” He trailed off and sat on the bed.
You grew sad at his reaction. Although he initiated the kiss it seems like he also regrets it.
“It’s okay...I, um, I’m gonna go downstairs.” You said and quickly left the room. You ducked into the bathroom and leaned against the counter willing yourself not to cry so you wouldn’t ruin your makeup. You took a few deep breaths to compose yourself and you made your way to the door. Just as you were about to turn the knob there was a knock.
“Y/n/N? Can I come in?” It was Tyson. The tears that you just suppressed were quickly coming back. You opened the door and retreated back to the counter.
“Jesus, are you crying?” You covered your face with your hands because the tears were now rolling. “Please don’t cry Y/N. I didn’t mean to upset you, jesus…” he trailed off as he placed his hands on your shoulders. “Please stop crying...I don’t know why I did that…” “It’s fine, Tys, you got caught up in the moment, it’s fine.” “What? No, not the kiss...the kiss was amazing...I totally meant to do that. I don’t know why I pulled away like that. I guess I just thought maybe that’s not what you wanted and I thought I messed everything up. I guess I did that anyway…” You didn’t say anything and you didn’t move for a few moments. “Will you look at me please?” He asked, softly guiding your chin up to look at him. “I’m sorry, Y/n/N. Please don’t be upset.” “You’re wrong you know…” He gave you a puzzled look but you just kept going. “I’ve wanted you to kiss me so badly...for so long. I just thought maybe you regretted it and that’s why you pulled away…”
“Not at all, babe...not at all.” He said, moving in, grabbing the sides of your face and kissing you tenderly.
This time when he pulled away his hands stayed where they were and he wiped away the remaining tears with his thumbs. “God you are so gorgeous.”
You couldn’t help but laugh a little, “Tyson, I’m crying and my makeup is everywhere.”
“That’s what makes you so beautiful.”
You shook your head and smiled at him, taking his hands in yours and bringing them to your sides.
“Come on, let’s go get you fixed up.” He said, leading you back to your room.
It didn’t take you too long to fix your makeup, and before you knew it you heard your mom yell up the stairs telling you guys to hurry up. You grabbed your shoes and sat on the bed next to Tyson to put them on. You started to open the door to leave and Tyson took your hand to stop you.
“Tys, we need to go what ar-” He stopped you with another kiss that you melted into.
“I know, I’m sorry, I just can’t get enough of your lips right now…”
You chuckled and rolled your eyes, “if we go now you can explore all of my lips later…”
Tyson’s eyes widened and he hurried both of you downstairs where the rest of your family was waiting.
~~~~~~
It was a beautiful day, although still pretty cold, the sun was shining and the snow was shimmering. The church looked gorgeous, they had decorated it with tons and tons of flowers, it looked like a garden and it was beautiful.
You held onto Tyson's arm as you followed the rest of your family to sit down. You got there on the earlier side, so there weren't too many people there yet. You found yourself looking back at the doors quite often, waiting for Jake to arrive. Tyson noticed, because you really weren't being very discrete about it, so he took your hand in his and squeezed it gently. You looked at him and smiled. You were so happy and relieved that you two finally shared how you felt and that you could finally be together. You wanted to believe that nothing would ruin such a beautiful day, but if anyone could, it would be Jake.
You were successfully distracted from the door by your brother's ridiculous argument over which of your cousins was going to get the most shitfaced. By the end of it you had placed $20 on who you thought I'd be.
When the ceremony was about to start, you looked to your left and your breath hitched. You grabbed Tyson's hand and looked at you before following your gaze across the room to where Jake was. He looked back and gave you a reassuring smile and kissed the side of your head. Thankfully, the music started to play and your focus was on the wedding party walking in.
The ceremony was beautiful, their vows were adorable, and all of the speakers and passages were very fitting. It wasn't too long either, which was also nice, you couldn't sit still for very long so you liked when things were quick.
Because of all of the people leaving the church, you avoided an encounter with Jake which you were glad about but you knew it was going to happen so the dread just set in. You were able to keep pretty busy throughout the night. Introducing Tyson to everyone and catching up with family you hadn't seen in a while. Tyson stayed by your side pretty much the whole night which was super comforting. You were nervous for him to leave you because you had caught Jake staring at you a few times, and you knew as soon as you were alone he was going to come up to you.
It didn't happen for a little while longer, which you didn't know if it was better or worse because you now had multiple vodka sodas in you. You had been sitting at the table with Tyson, taking a break from the dance floor, when your dad and uncles had come up to you and asked to steal Tyson. You tried to object but your uncles were insistent on spending a little time with him. You rolled your eyes and sat back, trying to push the anxious thoughts away. But that wasn't happening when you saw him approaching you. You tried to stand up but he grabbed your arm before you could take a step.
"Y/N, please. Just let me talk to you."
You sighed and sat down, making a point to shrug your arm out of his grip.
"So, who's the guy?"
"Tyson, my boyfriend." He scoffed at your reply. "What?" You asked.
"Nothing, I'm just surprised is all."
"Why?"
"Word on the street is, he's a professional athlete."
"So?"
"So, it's probably not going to last long. I wouldn’t say that you’re really his type."
"You don't know anything about me, Jake. We haven't talked in years. And I would really like to keep it that way, so please, leave me alone."
"Oh, come on, Y/n/N. Don't be like that. I wasn't that bad, you blew things way out of proportion."
"Did I? Because I'm pretty sure if your dad wasn't as good of friends with my uncle that you would have been in jail, not rehab. You're lucky you got off as well as you did. Me? I didn't get off that easy. You really fucked me up. I couldn't get near a guy for a year because of you. You were abusive. You were an asshole. And I wish that I hadn't wasted so many years of my life with you." You weren't really sure where you got the nerve to say all that, because as soon as it came out of your mouth you were scared of how he was going to react. He opened his mouth, but before he could get a word out, you heard a voice behind you.
"I believe the lady has spoken, you can go now."
To your surprise, he walked right away. It was probably Tyson towering over him that scared him off.
"Well, I was feeling badly that I left you out in the open but it appears my girlfriend is a total badass and was fine on her own…" He commented, wrapping his arms around you and placing his chin on top of your head.
"Yeah, well I'm surprised too. I have no idea why I thought that would be a good idea. I'm not sure what would have happened if you hadn't come over."
"Well, hopefully we never have to find out…are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good. It felt good to get that out."
"Good, fuck that guy."
"Yeah, fuck that guy." You said agreeing with him as you let go. "I need another drink…a stiff one."
"Anything for you, my love."
The rest of the night was pretty uneventful, however you downed a few more drinks and were very drunk. Tyson helped you to the car and then up to your room once you got home.
You stripped out of your dress and pounced on Tyson.
"Whoa, easy there killer." He said catching you and placing you gently on the bed.
You kissed for a few minutes before he climbed off of you. "Alright, bedtime."
"What?! Tyson…" you whined. "I've been waiting so long for this."
“Oh have you?!” He asked, quirking his eyebrows.
“Yes, now pleeeeeease.” She whined.
“You’re too drunk, and besides it’s a little weird with your parents down the hall.”
"Ugh, fiiiine." You pouted, taking your bra off and getting comfy in the bed.
"Can you put a shirt on?"
"Oh my god, Tyson, what is wrong with you?"
"I don't know if I can control myself laying with you naked all night. Just please." He said, throwing you one of his shirts.
You sighed and put his shirt over your head. He climbed into bed next to you and wrapped his arms around you.
"I'm so glad you came with me this weekend, Tys."
"Me too, I don't think I could have lasted much longer just as your neighbor."
"Yeah, it was starting to really get to me…"
"What do you mean?"
"I just was thinking that I was going to have to distance myself because I couldn't suppress my feelings anymore…"
"Well, then I'm definitely glad we had this weekend, I would have been really sad if you did that."
"I don't know if I could live with myself if I made you sad…not to mention I'd have Landy on my ass."
"He's been texting me all weekend."
"Really? Why?"
"Updates on if we're together or not."
"Did you tell him?"
"Nah, I want to mess with him a bit."
You chuckled and rolled your eyes, "what are you gonna do?"
"I'm just going to tell him that we had an awful weekend, we got into a huge fight and we're not even friends anymore."
"You're awful."
"But when I finally tell him that we are together now, he'll be so happy he won't even care."
"Okay, just leave me out of it!"
"Oh you're in it now. We're partners for life."
"For life?"
"I hope so."
"Me too." You said with a small smile. You turned so you were now facing him. "Goodnight, Tys." You said softly, giving him a kiss before snuggling into his chest.
"Goodnight, Y/n/N."
~~~~~~~
The next day you had a big brunch with your family before everyone went their separate ways again. Now that you and Tyson were actually together you were so much more relaxed. Despite the hangovers, everyone was laughing and joking around. You were actually a little sad that you were leaving. But, you were excited to get out of your parent's house and spend some alone time with Tyson.
After what seemed like a never ending goodbye, you and Tyson were finally on the road back to Denver. The car ride was much more pleasurable. Again, you were more relaxed, the weekend was behind you, and you frankly couldn't wait to get back.
When you pulled into the garage, you grabbed all of your bags and headed upstairs. You parted ways so you could put your bags down. A few minutes later, Tyson strolled through your front door. You were grabbing a glass of water in the kitchen, so you got one for him too and then you went back to your room so you could unpack and start some laundry.
"Do you want to bring your laundry over here?" You asked him as you gathered your dirty clothes.
"It's alright, I can do it later."
"I don't mind, Tys. I'm doing it anyway."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, go get it."
Tyson gave you a quick kiss on the cheek and walked off to go get his laundry.
Once you had a load going the two of you went and sat on the couch. You started off just talking but then ended up making out a bit. Tyson was now lying on top of you and things were starting to get heated when his phone rang. "Shit," he muttered as he rummaged around trying to find it on the couch. "It's Landy, I have to answer, I told him to call me."
You rolled your eyes but sat up next to him as he settled back.
"Hey, man." He greeted solemnly. You mouthed for him to put it on speaker.
"Hey, are you home? What happened?"
"Yeah, I'm home…um, things didn't go so well."
"Oh no...what happened?"
"Well, things with her family weren't good to start with. Then the first night we got into a fight about her brothers, and then we got into another argument the next day and I almost just left…I ended up staying but I don't think we're really even friends anymore…"
"WHAT?! Why wouldn't you be friends anymore? What did you do???"
You had to suppress your laughter at Tyson's face when Gabe insinuated it was something he did and not you.
"Why would you think it was something I did?!" Tyson asked, obviously very offended.
"It's Y/N…she just doesn't do anything wrong."
"Okay, well, I don't know. We need a break from each other."
"What the hell, Tyson? Did you even tell her how you feel?"
"I was going to, but I figured telling her after we just had a screaming match wouldn't be the best idea."
"You screamed at each other??? Jesus, what did you fight about?"
"Mat Barzal."
"What?!"
"Yeah he DM'd her on Instagram and it pissed me off."
"Seriously? You screamed at her?! That's not even her fault, man."
"I know, I shouldn't have gotten upset with her, but I did, and now we're just giving each other some space."
"That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Go over to her place right now and make things right."
"I can't, man."
"You can, and you will."
"No, I really can't."
"And why not?"
"Because I'm already over here."
"What?"
"I'm just messing with you, Landy. We're dating now."
"Are you kidding me?! Y/N are you there? Were you in on this??"
"I wanted no part in it!!!"
"Ugh, Tyson, I want to be so mad at you right now, but I'm too happy for you!! It's about time, though. We were going to give you guys like another week, tops, before we took matters into our own hands."
You and Tyson both laughed, "who is we?!" You asked.
"Me, Mel, basically the whole team…"
"Well I'm glad we have lots of supporters." You commented as Tyson pursed his lips.
"NO one will be butting into this relationship…I'm serious Landy."
"I'm sorry that's not the way it works, Josty." Tyson rolled his eyes but you just giggled. "Anyway, I'm glad you two love birds finally figured it out. Have a good rest of your day and use protection!!!"
Tyson rolled his eyes again and hung up on Landy. "We're turning our phones off and spending the rest of the day in the bedroom." He commanded as he put his phone down on the coffee table. He looked at you signifying for you to do the same and you obeyed then followed him into your bedroom.
(Based on a head canon Dave has memory problems after spending so much time in that cell, he didn't seen to remember Henry and if I were to stay in a cell for days, I'd forget a bunch of things. Sooo here's this lmao)
Dave Panpa had been in that cell for so long he probably wouldn't be the same. No, he's definitely not the same. As he is now with the same people who had captured him a long time ago, he honestly didn't remember when or why they kidnapped him. Everyone he knew before slowly faded from his memory, what he did before slipped away from him. All he knew was he worked as a security guard, he just couldn't quite remember who he worked with though. He also remembered working as a cop for a bit, any reason he left or was fired wasn't in his mind anymore.
He didn't even have the energy to try and escape, he just sat in the cell silently. Waiting for his death. While waiting there were Toppats who walked by, he could somewhat hear them speak. Mostly gossipe. There were assholes who made fun of him for being in the cell, saying things he didn't understand, mostly because he couldn't remember how he got there.
The assholes usually brought up stuff like, "shouldn't have been sticking your nose where it shouldn't have been" "oh look it's the dumbass stupid enough to go digging through things that weren't his" "look who was stupid enough to get caught" and just calling him an idiot. He got used to it by the second month(?) Of being in the cell.
Dave sometimes stood by the cell door, tryna pass the time by watching as people walked by. It got boring quickly though, as Dave was about to lay down again someone crashed through the back wall and through the door. He could only stare in shock as he stared at the Toppat.
Peeping through the hole, Dave saw the guy who barged into his cell. "Henry? We're with ya, Henry! Get us out of here!" Dave heard the guy in the cell next to him call out. Henry then turned to the guy on the ground who was just getting up again.
He glanced at Dave, was he asking for help? "Me?" Well, guess he's working with a Toppat now. "Come on Dave, you got this" (Dave was a bit surprised he could still speak, after not talking for a long time he thought he forgot)
Dave charges at him only to be throw into the ground. If he didn't suck before, he really sucked now.
Henry? (Maybe his memory really was terrible if he couldn't remember a name he heard minutes before) hit the guy in the neck and searched the dudes pockets, grabbing a key that was there. "Good... Good teamwork" Dave muttered, although Henry didn't seen to care what he said.
As Henry opened their cells Dave stood behind, feeling awkward. *What should he do? Go back into a cell and act like shit never happened? Just slowly back away and hide somewhere? Just dash out and make a run for it?*
As Dave was thinking a voice on the intercom spoke. "The denouncement ceremony has been completed. Henry is no longer leader of the Toppat Clan." So *that's what this is about* Dave thought for a few more seconds, there wasnt really anywhere to go at the moment. So he stick around for a few more seconds. Just listen in, maybe try and figure out stuff and get more information on everything.
"How do you want to proceed, boss? I've got a few idea's" Henry nodded at that. The guy with the idea's spoke once more. "First one is what I call "The Good Gents" we just barge in and take back your position!" Henry thought for a few seconds, he shook his head. It really wasnt the best idea. "Alrighty, the second one is "Midnight Surprise" we place bombs everywhere and at midnight we let it explode and take everyone down". Henry took another minute to think, it was stupid in Dave's opinion. It seems Henry also agreed, so the guy gave his next idea. "The last one is where we just get in an escape pod and leave". Honestly why didn't he just give that idea first.
Henry nodded and the three headed to one, Dave was about to walk away and go somewhere else, but I guess the others had another plans. They quickly grabbed his arm and shoved him in. "Agh! What the fuck!" He yelled. "Sorry bud, can't have you blabbing, it might also be better for your sanity". The guy with ideas stated. Dave just sighed and stood up. No getting out of this one.
"Kinda... tight in here..." It really was, would've been better if they left him, less cramped, probably a better escape for them as well. (If Dave was honest, he would admit he just didn't wanna drop down to earth in the escape pod, made him feel sick)
Landing, Dave got out, he honestly thought he'd throw up. He looked at the escape pod and saw a hand, it made him freeze. Who's hand was that. Everyone stared and decided they'd brush it off, wasn't there problem. Still made Dave scared though.
*Dave Could still see the hand twitch underneath the red escape pod, remember hearing the red spear hit whoever was there. Remember the way it stopped and how there was a bit of blood, the smell of it*
"Fuck!"
Not Clickbait - Chapter 29
This is my favorite chapter! I can’t believe it’s finally out! It’s about David and Y/n going on a trip together and sleeping together for the first time. You can totally read it as a one shot too but it’s better if you are up to speed with the series! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 💕💕💕
Y/n and David had just landed in Miami and gotten their rental car. David (Natalie) had made reservations at the Ocean's Edge Resort in Key West. They got to their room just as the sun was starting to rise which made the view even more spectacular than it already was.
“Dave, this… this is so perfect. Thank you for this, thank you for being such an amazing boyfriend” she said wrapping one of her arms around his waist as they walked over to the balcony. “We should go swimming, right now before there are a bunch of people at the pool!” Y/n beamed.
“Sure, whatever you want to do.” David agreed leaning down to kiss her.
“I’ll go change.” she whispered and walked over to her travel bag to get her swimsuit out.
She went into the bathroom and David just stood there on the balcony looking at the amazing view. A few minutes later Y/n came out of the bathroom in a flesh colored two piece. She had her hair down and her cheeks were slightly flushed. The golden light of the rising sun hitting her skin, still dewy from rubbing sunscreen all over. David thought she had never looked better, more relaxed, happier.
“Can you rub this on my back?” She muttered handing him the tube of sunscreen. She turned around as David put some lotion on his hand, she shivered a little when the cold product first hit her skin but then she started enjoying the feeling of David’s hands running through her back. David started spreading the cream and as he came across the strap of her bra he started running his hand under it. “You can untie that” she said holding the fabric by the front and he did, leaving her back completely bare for him to explore.
“Done” he whispered after a couple of minutes. Y/n turned around and leaned in for a kiss, it started off light but it soon deepened, her bra falling to the ground as she forgot she was holding it. They started moving towards the bed, his shirt falling on the ground on the way. David took a step back to look at her.
“You are so beautiful.” He muttered in her ear as he started kissing down her neck and clavicle. “I love you” he whispered on her lips. She broke the kiss to look at him for a second.
“I love you too.” she smiled against his lips.
“Are you sure you want to do this babe? We can stop, it’s okay if you want to wait.” David said breaking the kiss once again.
“I’m sure, I love you” she nodded. More pieces of clothing fell to the ground, as their hands got to know each other's bodies. It was sweet and gentle, filled with kissing and caressing, soft laughter and smiles.
A while  later Y/n and David were still in bed, wrapped in nothing but each other's arms and white sheets.
“Was… did… “ Y/n started, not completing her thoughts.
“Babe, just ask, you’ve been trying to get it out for like an hour” He smiled, putting his head on the crook of her neck.
“Did you like it? I mean you have more experience than I do so… Was it good for you?” She said feeling her cheeks get hot.
“Yes, it was great.” He smiled sweetly at her “Was it good for you? Did it hurt?”
“It was perfect. And no, it didn’t hurt.” Y/n said remembering how kind and gentle he was during the whole thing.
“You are so perfect, so amazing. I love you. This last couple months have been so wonderful.”
“I love you too, Dave. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect boyfriend.” She smiled running her fingers through his hair.
As tempting as spending the whole weekend in that hotel room sounded, after some room service breakfast it was adventure time. They rode all the way to Key West, visited the Hemingway Home and Museum, went canoeing and window-shopped through the luxurious boutiques before sitting down to have lunch.
“Most of these things have seafood!” David complained.
“Well, yeah babe, that’s kind of the point…” Y/n said giggling.
“Do you want to go parasailing after lunch?” His eyes gleamed.
“Nooo, pleeeease! I don’t like dangerous activities!! We are both too young to die…”
“We are not going to die, it’s going to be fine! You’ll love it, it’s fun!”
“If we die I am going to haunt your spirit for eternity…” she said giving up. She knew there was no point in arguing, when something got in his head…
“Good, that way not even death will do us apart”
“Funny…” She gave him a light push.
“Tell me again why we are doing this…” Y/n said squeezing David’s hand so tight it would probably leave a bruise.
“Because it’s fun and we only live once and because your face is funny when you are scared.” He replied giving the girl a quick peck.
Y/n actually really enjoyed herself, the views were amazing, it was really fun and it turned out to be the perfect thing to get her head off of what was coming. The wind blew her hair and blushed her already suntanned skin.
Night time came way too soon and David was at the bar waiting for Y/n, who was still in their room getting ready. He smiled down at his phone as he read Natalie’s text.
Assistant #1: How is the trip going, Romeo? Reformed Bieber: It’s great, the hotel is perfect! Thank u! Assistant #1: I am the best assistant, I know. U should give me a raise! Reformed Bieber: Haha v funny! U r a great friend! Assistant #1: OMG! Is that a compliment or just a way to get out of the raise? Reformed Bieber: Exactly. Assistant #1: U lil bitch, wait till u come home! Changing the locks tonight Reformed Bieber: I told her I loved her… Assistant #1: WHAT?? OMG!! I am so happy for u Dave!! Did she say it back? Reformed Bieber: Yes :)
As he sent that message he looked up to see Y/n approaching him. His jaw literally dropped, as did the ones from most of the attendants. She was wearing a silk emerald green tight dress, it was calf long and left little to the imagination as the fabric hugged her figure like a second skin. The color complemented her skin beautifully and had a sheen to it as the light reflected off the dress. Her skin had taken a golden tint, which was emphasized by the shimmer in her body oil. Her hair fell in careless curls and a proper amount of gloss made her lips look extra juicy. She was a gorgeous young woman, and David was used to her sweet pastel colored dresses but in that outfit she looked like a completely different person.
“WOW! Let's get out of here before my girlfriend shows up!” He whispered in her ear as she reached his seat in the bar.
“Sorry sweetie, I don’t do committed guys.” She muttered with a seductive little smile.
“Bummer.” He said before leaning in for a kiss, it was passionate and short lived.
“I take it you like my new dress.” She smiled teasingly.
“You should never take that off” He said, looking her up and down.
“If that is what you want! And here I was thinking you would enjoy what is underneath more than the dress.” David knew there was no way she could have anything under that dress because it would show through the fabric. So the thought of the only thing that could be under her dress appeared in his head.
“There is no way we are getting through dinner if you keep this up. I might need to throw you over my shoulder and take you back to our room.”
“Didn’t your mom teach you that you can’t have dessert before dinner?” She scolded, running her hand through the collar of his shirt.
“I’m a slow learner.”
The next day was spent at the beach enjoying the clear skies and warm water. Y/n put her book back inside her bag under the gazebo and looked over to her boyfriend.
“Are you coming to the water with me?” She asked as David played with his phone.
“No babe, go ahead. I’m too tired, I want to rest a bit.” He replied before kissing her goodbye.
It hadn’t been half an hour when David looked up from his phone to see two buff guys talking to Y/n  by the shore. He could feel the familiar green monster making an appearance. She looked too pretty in her mint green bathing suit and wet hair. He didn’t like the way those guys seemed to be eating her with their eyes. She seemed totally oblivious to that last part though. He stood up and made his way to his girlfriend.
“Hey babe! Was the water nice?” He said, grabbing her by the waist.
“It was perfect! You should go swim a bit before it starts getting cold! Oh, by the way… these are Chad and Trent! We went to high school together… isn’t it a small world?”
“Hey! Nice to meet you!” Dave smiled holding out his hand.
“Holy fuck! You didn’t tell us that the guy you were dating is David Dobrik!” One of the guys said
“Yeah, well it's kind of a secret or at least it was until he called me babe.” She explained, giving him a look. She had caught what he was trying to do and couldn’t wait till they were alone so she could tease the fuck out of him. He blushed a bit.
“Hey, don’t worry! We are not going to say anything! We still owe her big time for all the times she helped us with homework and exams! She was always the smartest little nerd in the class” The other guy said.
“Well except for gym class, those were not her brightest moments”
“Ohh god please don’t ever mention that again!! David destroyed me in tennis a few weeks ago!!” She laughed.
“Hey, so I know you two are on vacation but would you mind taking a picture with us?” Guy n°1 said
“Sure!” David said and after a few more minutes of chat both pairs went their separate ways.
“Look at you being all jealous! You are like a little puppy marking your territory! That is hi-la-ri-o-us!! OMG!! I can’t wait to go back and tell Natalie about this she is going to laugh so fucking hard!!”
“Whatever. The fact that they know you doesn’t mean they were not flirting with you!! They were eyeing you up!! You are just too naïve to notice.” He shrugged, grabbing at her waist.
“No, I am not! I did notice which is why ten minutes before you joined us I told them I came here with my boyfriend” She said giggling.
“That didn’t stop them staring then.”
“Maybe it didn’t, but I don't care. I only have eyes for one guy, and he is amazingly handsome and talented.”
“Let me guess, it’s me.” He said leaning down to kiss her.
“No, it's Ryan Gosling. But you are a close second place.” She giggled pulling him in.
Fic: Parent Trap 3/? (Keanu x Reader)
Summary: Annie and Hallie are twin sisters who never met until they end up in the same summer camp together. They decide to switch places to see how the other lives. Hallie heads to Los Angeles to meet Keanu, owner of Arch Motorcycle Company, while Annie goes to New York to meet you, rising fashion designer. Their plan is simple: get their parents together to make the perfect family. If only it could be that easy…
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
Author’s notes: This chapter is a little shorter, but I hope you all enjoy it. And as usual, feedback is always appreciated.
Wordcount: 1885
Warnings: none (just a ton of domestic fluff)
Hallie’s cheeks were hurting from smiling as she flopped on the bed of Annie’s room. Well her room now since she was pretending to be her sister. She propped herself on her elbows to survey the space, the string lights and delicate pattern of wallpaper such a contrast to her plain walls covered in band and movie posters.
She had been feeling weird the entire day, doubting this crazy plan of Annie and being absolutely certain she would be caught at the first second, as soon as Keanu laid his eyes on her in the airport. However, instead of Keanu, there was Karina and Hallie had been slightly disappointed that he wasn’t there to greet her. Maybe it was for the best, easier to pretend with her aunt than with her dad.
Annie’s aunt. Annie’s dad.
Her brain corrected and Hallie sighed, staring at the ceiling. It was such a weird feeling because in a way, Hallie felt like she knew them from what Annie had told her. Karina had been exactly what she was expecting, fun and cool and so interested in every detail about camp.
Keanu, on the other hand, took Hallie by surprise because Annie hadn’t done him justice. There was this warmth on his hugs that made Hallie want to stay in his arms all the time and such love in his eyes whenever he looked Hallie’s way. It was overwhelming and Hallie found herself jealous of Annie.
Not that Dave wasn’t affectionate and loving. She was and Hallie loved her aunt with all her heart, but it was different. She and Dave expressed their care in different ways, like nicknames and inside jokes. They were great, sure, but the tactile affection Keanu seemed to have with Annie was something that Hallie missed without even realizing it and definitely get used to it if Annie’s plan really worked.
Hallie jumped startled as the sound of her phone. Well, Annie’s phone, because she would never have Taylor Swift as her ringtone willingly.
“Yeah,” she answered, not even bothering to look at the caller ID.
“I really hope you haven’t been talking with that New York accent the whole day!” Annie complained in the line, making Hallie roll her eyes.
“I literally just said yeah,” she replied sitting up. Annie could be so dramatic sometimes. “No one has an accent saying yeah.”
“Whatever!” she could almost picture her sister’s eye roll and smiled to herself. “How is it going over there?”
“Good,” Hallie said, playing with a loose thread on the duvet. “Dad… I mean, Keanu,” she corrected quickly, embarrassed to be calling him like that to Annie. “Took me out for pancakes. Huge ass pancakes!”
“Griddle?” Annie asked, excited coloring her voice and Hallie hummed in agreement. “They’re the best!”
“They really are!” Hallie grinned. “And how are things on your end?”
“Salem hates me,” Annie sighed, and Hallie could hear the pout on her sister’s voice. “He runs and hides whenever I come around. Dave is finding it really weird.”
“Just slip him some pieces of ham. He’ll love you,” Hallie said, her chest suddenly feeling tight. She missed her cat. “How’s Dave?”
“She’s amazing,” Annie sighed again, but this time it was a happy little sigh that had Hallie grinning. “Just like you said. But you didn’t tell me they were twins too. She and our mother.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
It was all Hallie could say really, because she had kept that detail from Annie. Not on purpose, but because it always slipped her mind that Mary and Dave were twins. As a matter of fact, Hallie avoided thinking about Mary altogether. She wasn’t her mother; she was the woman that left her. And yes, Hallie understood that she was sick and probably couldn’t be held responsible for her actions and all, that but it didn’t change the fact that Mary abandoned her as much as she abandoned Annie and Dave was the only parent Hallie ever had. Until now anyway.
They chated a little more, but Hallie hurried to hang up the phone when Keanu poked his head inside the room after a quick knock, giving Hallie a funny look and she bet she had a guilty expression on her face.
“Who was that?” he asked, leaning against the doorframe, eyes narrowed.
“Just a friend from camp,” she replied, trying to sound as innocent as possible. For a second, Keanu just watched her, and alarm bells shrieked in Hallie’s head. That was it. she was caught. He knew.
“Do you remember the conversation we had about dating, right?” Keanu said, coming to sit on the bed with Hallie and she tried to stifle her relieved giggle. “I still think you’re too young, but if you met someone that you like, boy or girl, I hope you know you can talk to me about it.”
“Err, thanks?” Hallie managed, giving him a look. He was right, she was way too young to date. “But it’s really just a friend. She’s more like a sister, really.”
“Ok, good,” Keanu grinned, throwing an arm around Hallie. “Because that was just a bunch of bullshit. I would freak out if you told me you had a boyfriend or girlfriend.”
“Don’t worry, you’re safe,” she said, laughing and she hugged her dad back. “But points for being going for both genders.”
“I’m a cool dad,” Keanu declared with a big grin.
“If you have to tell people you’re cool then you’re not cool,” Hallie joked, squealing when he tickled her sides.
“I show you who’s not cool!” he said, making Hallie bend over laughing and battling his hands, struggling to breathe.
“You’re cool! You’re cool!” Hallie shrieked breathlessly and Keanu stopped, chuckling and looking over at his daughter with a victorious grin.
“And don’t you forget it!” he teased, getting to his feet.
“Can we have pizza for dinner?” Hallie asked, still grinning.
“We just had pancakes. Lots of pancakes.” Keanu pointed out with a frown and Hallie just shrugged. That was three hours ago.
“Yeah, sure.” He nodded, heading to the door.
“Hey, dad?” Hallie called in an impulse, making Keanu paused and look over at her. “I love you.”
Hallie wasn’t sure why she needed to say it. She didn’t even care if it might be out of character for Annie to say it out of the blue – and by the frown on Keanu’s face, it must have been. She just wanted to make sure he knew. Because she did love him, despite only knowing him for a day.
“Love you too, princess,” Keanu replied with a wide smile, before walking out.
She sat there, watching the doorway for a few moments, before grabbing her phone and texting Annie.
This plan of yours better work. Keanu and Dave need to be together.
----
Annie set her phone down when Hallie hung up all the sudden, the last thing she heard or thought she heard, was her dad’s deep baritone on the background and it was enough to rekindle the ache that had been living on her chest all month but that had been dulled a little when arriving in New York.
She missed her dad like crazy and even though she had been loving to spending time with Dave, that wouldn’t just go away. If her plan worked, however, Annie wouldn’t have to worry about missing any of them, because they would all be together like the family she had always wished for.
It was the whole reason why Annie suggested this plan in the first place, even if she didn’t admit completely to Hallie. She grew up watching her friends’ parents together, painting that perfect picture that she craved for. Annie loved her dad and knew he did his best, but she longed for a mom to teach her how to do her nails or talk to boys and stuff like that. And maybe she was being a little too gender normative, but right now, she couldn’t care less.
With a sigh, Annie stared at herself in the dirty mirror in Hallie’s bedroom. She was getting ahead of herself here. First, she needed to make sure Dave and Keanu would be a good match, then she could start planning the wedding.
She pulled her hair in a quick, messy braid, before walking out of the bedroom, catching sight of Salem dashing away from the kitchen as Annie walked in and made a mental note about trying the ham thing Hallie suggested.
“I ordered pizza,” Dave declared with a big smile. “Cute braid. Did you learn in camp?”
Annie froze for a second, quickly running through all her interactions with Hallie in the month the two girls had spent together and realizing she had never seen Hallie with anything other than a ponytail.
“Yeah,” she hurried to say, forcing a smile. “A friend from camp taught me.”
“Cool,” Dave dismissed with a shrug and Annie was relieved. She needed to be more careful. “Grab some sodas and we can eat watching a movie.”
Annie nodded, turning to the fridge to grab the drinks while Dave settled on the couch, pizza box opened on the coffee table in front of them.
Once again Annie froze, this time at the sight of the pizza in front of her. She had completely forgotten that Hallie, unlike her, ate meat.
“What’s wrong?” her aunt asked with a frown of confusion and Annie shook herself. Good thing she was great at thinking on her feet.
“I forgot to tell, I went off meat while on camp,” Annie said, taking her seat and handing over the can of Dr. Pepper. “I mean, most human beings are perfectly capable of going into a plant-based diet and carnism is actually completely ideological and unjust. Why is it ok to kill a cow and eat it while also keeping a cat and dogs as pets? Besides, meat production and consumption are slowly killing our planet. Do you have any idea how much water goes into producing a pound of meat?”
“Whoa! Ok!” Dave interrupted the girl’s rant, raising her hands in surrender. “Who are you and what did you do to my niece?”
Annie knew it was a joke. She really did, but the panic set in anyway and she let out a high pitched, awkward laughter.
“I’m Hallie! Of course, I’m Hallie,” she babbled. “I was born on September 31st, I’m a Libra, I love cats and rock music and…
“Hal, I’m only kidding.” Dave once again interrupted her, this time with a half-amused, half confused smile. “I think it’s very admirable you want to go vegan, but you’re still growing, and I’m not let you cut off animal protein on a whim without talking to your GP first ok?”
“That’s reasonable,” Annie replied, the panic finally dissipating. “Sorry. I just…”
“It’s fine, kiddo,” Dave said with a wink, before glancing to the pizza. “You’re gonna have to pick out the pepperoni from your slices, because I’m starving and not calling the Primo’s to have it changed.”
“I can do that,” Annie smiled, still slightly nervous as she finally took a seat.
“And of course, you’re Hallie,” Dave said after a moment, mouth full of pizza with a quick smile Annie’s way. “I mean, who else would you be?”
“Alright, Zane, I think that’s enough alcohol for tonight, baby.” You supported Zane having his arm around your shoulders. “Here, have this.”
Zane made a disgusted face. “What is that?”
“It’s just water, come on, take a sip.” You told him, but immediately rejected it.
Rolling your eyes, you took the cup away and then brought him the same cup again. “Ok fine, have it your way, here’s some vodka.”
And he happily drank all the liquid, which made you laugh and facepalm. “How is it?”
“That’s some tasty drink right there,” He nodded, approving the “vodka”.
“Aw, I’m glad you liked it.” You smiled, taking a paper towel and drying his sweaty forehead. His eyes were barely open and his body was trying to dance to the music, but ended up just moving oddly. “Hey, I have a fun idea. How about we eat some of these chips? I’m feeling reeeeeeally hungry.”
You brought a small packet of regular chips and gave him some to eat, which he obeyed like the good toddler he was.
After taking care of Zane for a couple of hours, he was sobering up and wasn’t going to pass out or have a ridiculous major hangover the next day.
“Thank you for helping me with him, (Y/N).” Heath softly smiled in appreciation.
“No problem, babe. Let me know how he wakes up tomorrow. I already gave him one Advil,” You informed your friend. Heath nodded and walked Zane to the car.
“Psst, hey. Dave, wake up.” You poked David while he was napping rolled into his comforter on the living room couch. He whined, you rolled your eyes. “Come on, you need to take your medicine.”
David mumbled something incomprehensible, but stood up a bit and took the pill and the bottle of water from you, barely opening his eyes. After swallowing it, he nodded in appreciation. “Thank you (Y/N),” Only to fall down on the couch again, sleeping.
Just recovering from a bad case of the flu, you spent part of your days at David’s making sure he was properly taking care of himself, which he usually wasn’t, hence the sickness. You cooked him some soup while he napped and cleaned the dishes for him. Jason came along an hour later to check up on him as well.
“Hey (Y/N), how’s David doing?” Jason approached you on the glass table by the kitchen and hugged you. “Uh, that smells good.”
“He’s been sleeping a lot, but I made sure he took his medicine and is properly eating actual food and not just Chipotle.” You hugged Jason back, stopping your own video editing for a while. “And I just made some soup, you’re more than welcome to join us.”
“David’s really lucky to have a friend like you around. Sometimes he’s just so reckless I want to punch him.” Jason looked at the blob that was David on the couch. “Actually, we’re all very lucky to have you around, you’re always taking care of us.”
“You’re cute, but I’m just being a friend, that’s all. We work so much that we forget that health is actually a real thing.” I laughed, shrugging.
“I’ll go wake him up to eat your soup then.” Jason kissed your head and you got up to pick up some plates.
Todd had his head resting on your lap, eyes closed, feeling your fingers running through his black strands of hair. Somehow he showed up at your door at 2:45 am, completely wasted, after drinking his feelings away because of another fight with Corinna. You were caught in the middle of this tornado since the moment they started to date, always listening to both sides, trying to reason with them and advising in what they should do.
You looked to the orange and pink sky through your living room window, it was probably around 6 am now. You’ve spent all these hours listening to a drunk Todd cry about how sad he was but couldn’t ever properly express his feelings to Corinna.
This time you chose to just listen and wear off the alcohol in his system, giving him water and all the protocol for him not to wake up a bigger mess. Your eyes shut for one second, giving that you were exhausted yourself.
Todd woke up after a couple of minutes and saw you there, taking care of him for the hundredth time again, only to sigh and get up to cook you breakfast.
You had scheduled to meet Kristen for a Saturday brunch, missing your time together. When you arrived, she was already there, Scotty sitting by her side. Instead of being mad, you just smiled watching them together from a far and seeing how much love they had. You reached them, hugged them tight and sat down, spending the next couple of hours talking about everything in your lives.
“Oh, shit, I almost forgot,” You shook your head, quickly slapping yourself in the forehead. “Here, I bought you this!” You smiled.
It was this lovely and big Buddha crystal figure with a lotus flower on the inside. It was written Kristen all over it. The look on her face was priceless and you clapped, excited.
“(Y/N), oh my God. This is amazing! I can’t take this, this looks super expensive.” Stunned by the figure, she didn’t even look at you, just kept admiring it.
“Oh please, yes you’re taking it. I saw this while I was looking for a new clock for my apartment and it was you all over it. I couldn’t not take it!” You smiled, sweetly. “And my channel is doing good, don’t worry about it!”
“What’s the occasion?” Scotty asked with a smile on his face, also appreciating how happy Kristen was.
“Can’t a girl give her best friend a random gift out of the blue just to see her cry?” You shrugged, being a little over dramatic for the joke.
“Oh my Gaaaaaaaah.” Kristen did a fake-cry and whine just to make you laugh.
“Jesus fucking Christ, what is the matter with you people?” You said, breathless. “Why do people do this to themselves willingly.”
Todd and Jeff stopped to laugh at you, a few feet down the hike from them. “Come on now, it’s not that bad.” Jeff joked, waving for you to reach them.
It was the beginning of the year and as much as Todd and Jeff were friends, they were still getting to know each other. You knew both of them, knowing that Todd and Jeff had just been through terrible break ups and could use each other’s help. So you managed to sneakily schedule the first hike they ever did together, using your bad habits as an excuse.
“Don’t look at me like that (Y/N), I’m not gonna carry you again.” Todd shook his head when I gave him my puppy eyes.
“God dammit,” You rolled your eyes and did a little power run to reach them. “Just go easy on me, why don’t ya?”
We kept walking together and a couple of miles in, Todd asked Jeff “So… How have you been since you broke up with Cierra?”
“Basically shit, man.” Jeff answered and they continued to talk about every aspect of their lives.
You smiled to yourself, mentally giving you a high five for your bromance cupid skills.
“Ooh, who’s that guy?” You scrolled through Corinna’s Instagram DMs while she was putting on make up before you both went out. I show her the profile picture for Tfue.
“Oh, it’s this streamer guy that I told you about, he’s nice.” Corinna took one look at it and went back to her make up.
Clearly, I clicked to go to his profile and started going through his pictures and videos. “Oh, he’s cute too. He’s very much your type.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” She chuckled while putting mascara on.
“You know exactly what I mean, don’t play dumb.” I laughed. “And he’s asking you out for next weekend! Why don’t you go out with him?”
“I don’t know (Y/N). I told you I needed to take some time after the whole Todd situation,” Corinna made some excuse.
“You did tell me that and you did take time, Cor. It’s been a few months now,” You knew how lonely she felt and you wanted for her to get back out there. “You’re not instantly going to get married to this guy or whatever other guy you go out with. But I think it’d be fun for you to see some new people, change weathers. Don’t think I haven’t noticed your anxiety rising lately. I know how you tic and you need to be social and have fun to destress.”
Corinna sighed and looked at me. “I hate how you know me so well,”
You shrugged. “I’m very proud of it, to be quite honest.” I made a proud face that made her smile. “C’mon, you have nothing to lose here.”
She gave you a quick smile which was enough for you to accept as a yes. “I’d love to hang out! When are you free? And send.”
“(Y/N)! Did you just message him?” Corinna was half shocked half amused.
“What? No.” You looked like a toddler who was just caught doing something bad.
“Oh my God, give me this.” Taking the phone out of your hand, she looked for his DM. “You’re the worst!”
“I think the words you’re looking for is absolutely unbelievably amazing.” You smiled. “Besides, I have a feeling you’ll be thanking me in the future, so… I do accept thank yous as louboutin shoes by the way.”
You walked out of her bathroom, leaving her chuckling.
Today
“Alright guys, here’s the deal. I just texted (Y/N) and she’s coming to my house.” David was sitting down by the living room with a bunch of the VS behind him. “She’s always taking care of everybody, so we decided to surprise her tonight.”
“Today is her half birthday. We decided to do this today so she wouldn’t suspect anything.” Corinna explained to the camera.
“When she arrived, I’m gonna blindfold her and walk her in,” David informed the viewers. “Then she’s gonna see all of this.”
Taking the camera, David got up from the ground and showed around his house, which was filled with all of the people who loved you and cared for you. The house was completely decorated with Cabaret, with performers and playful activities, which you absolutely adored.
“She’s gonna flip the fuck out,” Jason said to David’s camera. David laughed.
“50 bucks she starts crying,” David wagered.
“I’m on it!” Jeff shook David’s hands.
Once they saw your car parking in front of David’s house, he made his way out of the door, while Jason filmed everything from a hiding spot.
“Hey, thanks for coming!” David smiled at you and hugged you.
“Yeah, no problem. What’s up?” You didn’t even realize anything. Your hair was in a messy bun and you were wearing a clickbait hoodie and sweatpants. Every time one of your friends asked for you to come because they needed help, you never hesitated. “Are you ok?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” David laughed, then showing you a black piece of cloth. “I’m really sorry but I have to blindfold you.”
“What?! David, no!” You whined and looked around, looking for the camera. “You don’t even have a camera, what? No! No wild animals! I still have nightmares because of the roaches and the scorpions.”
David laughed. “It’s none of that I promise, don’t you trust me?”
“No.” You blatantly said and the both of you laughed. “Fine, but if it’s something gross I’m going to kick you in the balls.”
“That’s oddly specific. Okay. Come on.” David said as you turned around and he blindfolded you.
Carefully, he helped you get inside the house, positioning you in the middle of the room. All cameras and phones were on you. “Okay, on 3 you can take the blindfold off. 1… 2… 3… go!”
The second that you took it off, everybody yelled “Happy Birthday!!” and popped a bunch of confetti sticks, shooting you with silly string, sour cream and bottled cheese.
“What the fuck?!?! It’s not even my birthday, David!!” You screamed, your eyes closed because there was so much silly string on your face. Everybody just laughed out loud and Corinna came to your rescue with baby wipes to help you regain your sight.
You looked around, seeing everybody and looking at the decoration. “You guys did this all for me? It really isn’t my birthday though, so I feel bad.” You were getting emotional.
“But it is your half birthday!” Natalie popped another confetti.
You did an “O” face. “Of course, I should’ve seen this coming.” You threw one hand up in the air, defeated. “I hate all of you,” You cleaned the tears from your eyes.
“God dammit,” Jeff paid David 50 bucks.
The party went on, you cleaned yourself and said hi to all of your friends, hugging everybody, taking pictures, having drinks and enjoying the night as the center of attention.
Haven DVD commentaries; 5.13 - Chosen
Commentary with Gabrielle Stanton and Matt McGuiness (and another brief appearance by Assistant Josh) [Josh’s surname isn’t mentioned in any of these but from a brief googling I assume this is Josh Brandon]
MMG: Welcome to the commentary for the final episode of season five, the name of which escapes me right now GS: It’s called Chosen. It’s been, how many months since we shot this? MMG: Oh, seven or eight months maybe. GS: Yeah so we might just fall silent, like; Wow I forgot about this! MMG: I’m already mesmerised by how good our show looks. I really think it looks so good. We’re picking up here directly after the last episode, and this is a real jaw dropping moment [Charlotte revealing that she’s Mara’s mother] GS: We’re kind of hoping that no one saw this coming. If all went well no one did. I know Adam certainly didn’t see it coming. MMG: This was fun for us with Adam Copeland because, fans will know that Adam was a wrestler, and we’ve sort of watching him matriculate as an actor on Haven. And now, I remember saying to him that he was going to get to do all sorts of new and interesting things. I never said to him that he was going to get to find out that the woman you’re sleeping with comes from another dimension. GS: No. We said ‘love interest’ but then I think we kept it a little vague after that. MMG: And we didn’t tell him what was going to happen with his love interest. And he played it great.
[On screen Charlotte is talking about microscopes as a metaphor for this world and hers being different and separate] MMG: There’s one of the two microscopes. I was not thrilled with those microscope choices. Put them a little closer together, perhaps. We were not there for this episode. A lot of times we go up to Canada when we shoot these, which is super fun. It’s like going to camp, seeing everybody and running around, but for this episode we were furiously writing. GS: I think we were already writing the premiere of the next season. MMG: Yeah, so we couldn’t go up. GS: I thought Laura [as Charlotte] played this whole thing very well. MMG: She was great.
[As we see Duke deep in thought outside the Gull] GS: Oh this was kind of cool. Obviously finales often set up a whole bunch of stuff for the up coming season, but this finale in particular set up a lot of stuff to come back to in the next season. MMG: I really like this scene. This is one of those scenes that I like because it manages to be horrific and kind of gory in a way, but  if you are twisted like I am, it sort of makes me giggle a little bit too. My buddy Chris makes his own Kaluha. GS: I didn’t even know you could. MMG: It’s very easy to make GS: What’s in it? MMG: I don’t know. But he makes Kaluha and I drink it. Happily. [As stuff starts exploding] GS: I thought the effects were really good here. MMG: Yeah this scene came out great. [As the guy explodes] MMG: That effect was a little odd, but it still worked out great. GS: A little over the top but still kind of awesome. [As Duke’s line about needing to see a doctor ] MMG: And Eric delivered this line well.
MMG: And here’s our lovely theme music, I love it. My kids sing it. Well, hum along to it
[Credits on screen: Editor - Thorben Bieger] MMG: This was edited by Thorben. His name is Thorben and I wrote an episode of Haven back in season three and there was a guy in it named Thor [pronounced Tor], which was a shortened version of Thorben. And I remember people saying that wasn’t a real name, no one’s named Thorben, that’s ridiculous. And I thought, well our editor is named Thorben.
[Gloria making a scene in the hospital to cover for Duke] GS: I love Gloria. Let’s do the Gloria spin off. MMG: Jayne Eastwood loves this kind of stuff. She was great here.
[As Duke arrives to talk to Charlotte] MMG: This is another cool moment, this episode was full of cool moments. GS: Well it’s cool because everyone knows something that the other person doesn’t know, in every scene MMG: Right. There’s a lot of secrets. And look how great Laura looks with her hair down. GS: I know, I was so happy when we brought it down. The second we were going to change her from a doctor to Audrey’s mother, we were like; bring the hair down! [Charlotte to Duke; Remove your shirt please.] GS: And the fans go wild. [As we see the handprints on Duke] GS: And even wilder. Can I say, that little handprint right on his butt, we were told that was very important that that was there.
GS: Oh this is a cool scene coming up [Audrey and Mara talking in the bronco]. How did they shoot it, was there special effects, or? MMG: This was a cool scene. But no, I think they just shot over … well let’s see but I’m pretty sure they used Lydia our stunt double. GS: So they didn’t do any split screen MMG: I don’t think so. This kind of stuff is so fun for Emily, and this was a really good Mara performance. And the dialogue in this scene is fantastic, really it’s clever. GS: Wait, didn’t you write this episode? MMG: Yes I did. GS: Ah ha, that explains it.
MMG: Can you turn it up Josh, I can barely hear … Oh, I had the wrong - OK that’s better. Don’t laugh like I did something wrong. GS: No, no! The technology is all new to us. We have new exciting technology for this year’s commentary.
[Mara talking to Audrey] MMG: There is an homage in this scene, a line of dialogue from a very famous science fiction show; “make the Troubles look like a square dance.” GS: Oh I remember you telling me what it was at the time …
MMG: Oh this scene [with the kids on the boat] was great as well. The name John-John [the school kid] came from a top ranked ASP surfer named John-John Florence, who is nothing like that kid but I just liked the name John-John. Am I going to get sued for that? GS: I don’t think so. Because you said they’re not alike. MMG: Yeah I just like the name. GS: This turned out really well too [the kids trapped in the boat as it starts to fill with water]. We were kind of nervous trying to picture how it was going to turn out. You know, when you write on the page ‘and suddenly the boat is being crushed by ropes’ you’re kind of wondering exactly how it’s going to work. [The teacher on screen; I am so fired] MMG: That was an ad lib right there.
[Dave justifying his daytime drinking; The sun’s past the yardarm] MMG: That is lifted from my friend Danna. She’s from Maine and she always says that; the sun’s past the yardarm. Which means the sun’s past the little thing that sticks out on the mast, so it’s five o’clock. GS: It’s five o’clock somewhere. And if I had visions like that, I’d be drinking too.
[Nathan and Audrey talking outside the bronco as she nurses her head where Mara hit her] GS: Where did they shoot this? This is right near Nicky’s, in Chester I think. MMG: Sure looks like it. But I think we’re trying to hide where … Oh yeah! We are trying to hide where it is because, I remember this was a production nightmare, it was supposed to be right outside of the lab because Audrey goes in talk to Charlotte at the end of this scene. This was a very tricky piece of production right here.p
[Audrey talking to Mara in the lab] MMG: This was an interesting scene because we really wanted Audrey, someone who’s been looking for her mother for her entire life, to connect with this woman somehow. But it was hard. GS: But it’s a nice setup, for everything that happens in our next season.
*gap in the commentary as they are both silent for a while* GS: Josh is like, please say something guys. Alright, you would think after doing four years of these we would be in some way better at them. MMG: You know what? You can hate yourself, but I refuse to live my life that way. I think we’ve been doing great at this. GS: I don’t think there are supposed to be these big stretches of dead air. My problem is I don’t watch the commentaries on other DVDs, even shows I love, just because doing that makes me feel like I’m being pulled out of it like the universe doesn’t really exist. But I should because then maybe I’d be better at these. MMG: Sometimes I just get sucked into the scene and I just start watching the show.
MMG: It is interesting to contemplate Charlotte as Audrey’s mother, and you start thinking; there is a vague, sort of passing resemblance there in an odd kind of way. GS: There is. The nose, and the eyes are similar.
MMG: I like the giant card catalogue in the back of this office [the Herald]. I always expect them to open it up and pull out a dewey decimal system card or something. GS: This was always one of my favourite sets. It seems the most Haven. And also the Gull but that was always such a nightmare to shoot in. [Duke, to Vince: If you know where an open thinny is, then you are going to tell me right now. Or I am going to beat you to death. With him.] GS: I really like that line. MMG: I got grief for that line. People felt Duke was being a bully or something. GS: Ah, they could take Duke down if they wanted to. They put up with him.
[The location with the boat full of school kids] MMG: That’s North West Cove, is it not? GS: I think it is. Up by the Grey Gull where all the lobster traps are. That had to be a terrible job [for the actors playing the school kids in the water-filled boat]. I’m sure that water was not super MMG: Oh yeah there were some tough local kids who just got drenched all day, I suspect.
[Charlotte explaining the merge-Audrey-with-Mara plan to Nathan] MMG: I like this scene. GS: Nathan’s like; WHAT? MMG: Look how great our show looks. No it really does. Maybe it’s this computer? I just think it looks great. GS: No, it does. It’s that grey rainy weather that’s so difficult to shoot in but looks great on screen. MMG: This is bad news for Nathan. GS: And I think what’s so surprising to him is that Audrey’s going along with it.
MMG: What’s with Audrey’s jacket with the American flag on the arm? Has she borrowed that? GS: Is that her cop jacket? No, I think that’s just a random jacket. MMG: This was very emotionally tricky bit [Audrey convincing Nathan to let Charlotte do the merge thing]. I’m now having total ‘PTSD’ on writing this episode becuase it was very, very challenging. Actually, Josh just looked at me, we could tell a funny story about Josh right now. My recollection is, I was struggling with the idea that Nathan’s motivation in an earlier draft was basically to let Audrey go. And that made it very hard to sort of keep him driving, and have these moments. But it was Josh’s suggestion, and it plays out in this scene, where he basically gives the ‘stay alive and I will find you and I will bring you back’ speech. Do I have that right Josh? Josh: Yep. GS: Nathan is nothing if not determined. MMG: And diligent. It’s called love, don’t hate it. GS: I could never hate love. If these two weren’t made for each other, who are.
MMG: Ah, the Cape Rouge. Which isn’t at the bottom of the ocean any more I don’t think. They floated it. GS: The actual boat, that we used for the exterior shots, sank. The hull finally rusted out and it hit the bottom. Fortunately where it was, the water wasn’t too deep so I don’t think the entire thing ever went entirely under.
MMG: That was a slightly confusing cut. We went from Duke in his boat, to the kids in the sinking boat - like woah Duke, there’s kids drowning in the bottom of your boat.
[Mara coming to talk to a chained up Duke in the hold of the Rouge] MMG: This was one of those scenes that comes out in a way that’s not exactly how you’d imagined. But I like it. GS: These two actually could have lived happily ever after too, in a different universe. MMG: For sure. We miss Mara. GS: She was a great character. You loved to hate her. MMG: I liked to write her. She was fun. GS: Yes, super fun to write. Characters who are a little darker or have more of an edge are always (for me at least) more fun to write. A little more complicated. That’s why Duke was always really fun to write. MMG: Yep
[Charlotte and Dwight’s conversation] GS: I thought Adam did a great job in this scene. MMG: Yeah. His last line’s good, because he’s very vulnerable.
GS: This was such a tricky episode, because we had to have our Trouble of the week, but I always felt that no one was caring about anything except what was going on with Charlotte and Mara and Audrey. MMG: This was a very difficult episode, and I’m now remembering. It was terrible. I remember we all squeezed into Adam Higg’s, what was that room in his apartment building. GS: Oh the conference room in his building. Why were we in there? Josh: The plumbing went out. GS: Oh that’s right. The plumbing went out here and one of our writer’s lived just up the block so we all went and took over his apartment building. MMG: Which had a giant fish tank. GS: And a really nice pool. Really nice apartment building.
[Nathan finding Gloria emptying the Gull of its alcohol] MMG: This was another scene that didn’t come out exactly as I had imagined it. But Jayne Eastwood is just a delight. I slow danced with Jayne at the wrap party. It was very, very fun, but I’m going to stop that story right there.
MMG: This was hard for Emily. God, there were so many vectors in this. Because she also had to be getting sick in this sequence too. That was tricky, she had a lot going on.
[As the Troubled guy is talking to his daughter trapped in the boat and telling her how much he loves her] MMG: I have three daughters, so I always like to write this kind of stuff. By that I don’t mean drowning them. But you get to use someone else as a mouthpiece to write little speeches to your kids.
MMG: Ah, the seaplane. This was going to be a boat, and then we changed it to a seaplane.
[As Charlotte is confirming to Audrey that merging with Mara will effectively mean she dies] MMG: Oh my god, there were so many tricky scenes in this episode. Explaining so much stuff. GS: I think Emily loved playing Mara. MMG: She did. She’s having a great time. And this is our goodbye to Mara, sadly. And these were Charlotte’s first little hints about “Dad” in this scene I think. Both actresses do a great job here. It’s tricky stuff here.
[As Duke and Nathan meet at the seaplane place] MMG: There’s a LOT going on between these two here GS: In one draft didn’t they take swings at each other here? MMG: I don’t know. That should have been stung with music right there, that Duke’s plan was to kill Mara. And there’s Duke once again being slightly noble; doesn’t want to explode in Haven, wants to go and explode in the void.
[As the wind starts blowing stuff over by Duke and Nathan] GS: I remember we had so many discussions about what this was going to look like. MMG: This didn’t come out exactly as we’d imagined either. We’d imagined that everything was going towards them, sort of like a singularity. But the wind seemed to be blowing in a variety of directions there. This is a great shot [looking down on Duke and Nathan] and this one [as we see Charlotte and Audrey kneeling, before the reveal that it is Audrey and not Mara]. That pile of clothing looks like it should be smoking, like Terminator.
[As Audrey and Nathan hug] GS: Aw, yey! Duke’s like; how come I’m not getting a hug? [As Charlotte tells Duke Mara turned the Trouble bomb off] GS: It’s a happy ending! But wait … can it really be a happy ending on Haven? [As we see Duke’s black eyes] GS: His eyes look good. MMG: Yep.
[As Vince and Dave find CROATOAN carved in the rock] GS: That is very neat handwriting, wow. MMG: I was just thinking that. So perfectly spaced. Ah that’s OK. [As they see the fog wall going up through the trees] GS: That’s a cool shot. MMG: Yep, I agree.
235. Sonic the Hedgehog #167
Tumblr media
Mobius 25 Years Later (Part Two): Tempus Aeternus
Writer: Ian Flynn Pencils: Tracy Yardley Colors: Jason Jensen
Lien-Da is incredibly happy with herself on this fine evening, sipping a glass of wine and bragging about how she and King Shadow orchestrated the arrests of Tails, Lara-Su and Sonic, and how as a result she's had a hand in "bringing down the line of Edmund." Rutan watches silently from the nearby stairs, looking conflicted and upset, while Dimitri (still confined to being a head in a bubble) coldly remarks at how ashamed he is to be related to her due to her behavior, even more ashamed than when he in the past worked with Dr. Finitevus. Wait, what?! That hasn't happened yet! A hint of what is to come in the main comic, perhaps…? After all, though Lien-Da implied that Dimitri was dead during the Return to Angel Island arc, we know he can't actually be if he appears in this future. In the dungeons beneath the castle, Sonic, Tails, and Lara-Su have been chained up next to a despondent Rotor. He is frustrated that the three of them don't seem to be taking their position seriously, as the first two mostly joke around about this "bringing back memories" while Lara-Su complains that Rutan will make fun of her for all this. At that moment, Knuckles walks in, looking very stern.
Tumblr media
What, did you think Knuckles was gonna be the villain of this piece? Nah, he has way too heroic of a spirit to end up like that! (I mean, so does Shadow, but we already saw how that's being ignored in this arc, so.) Apparently, he was even counting on Lara-Su to overhear his conversation with Tails, precisely so that she would rebel and allow him to set up a coup like this without Shadow realizing that his head enforcer wasn't loyal. Tails says that he'll hack the castle's security systems to allow the others to get a clear path to the throne room, and Knuckles says he'll keep Queen Sally safe while Sonic battles Shadow. Lara-Su wants to come along, but Knuckles convinces her that now the best way for her to help is to get the injured Rotor to a hospital, which she reluctantly agrees to. Sonic and Knuckles race along the hallways to the throne room, where Sally quickly follows Knuckles to safety. Apparently, she too seems to know about the other timeline, surprised that her husband does as well. With Sally safe, Sonic tries to attack Shadow, but his punch has barely any force behind it.
Tumblr media
Ouch. I mean, yeah, saw it coming, but ouch. Things are looking bad, until suddenly Lara-Su bursts in, ready to continue the fight on her own terms. Shadow becomes irritated at her smack-talk, and reminds her that he wields Chaos powers, only for her fist to glow as she smugly invites him to "join the club." Shadow tries to fire off some Chaos Spears in her direction, but she merely dodges them while reciting Tikal's prayer (you know, the "Chaos is power enriched by the heart" one) and performs a Chaos Control, freezing Shadow in place.
Tumblr media
Bit of an ignoble ending to Shadow's story, don't you think? I said it last issue, but again, I'm really not okay with how this AU just wants to turn Shadow into this brutal villain. I mean, especially considering his whole character arc in the games - the only times he ever acts truly violent and uncaring of others' wellbeing is when he's being manipulated by an actual villain or otherwise brainwashed, and once he discovers who he truly is he's never anything less than a goddamn hero. I just think that turning Shadow the Hedgehog into Shadow the Evil Dictator is doing a huge disservice to him as a character, and not even bothering to try to work in an ending where he realizes the error of his ways is at this point just spitting in his face.
Meh, whatever. Knuckles comes running back in, concerned, but Lara-Su just excitedly informs him of how she defeated Shadow. She then says a seemingly nonsensical line about how she "already took care of him" that only makes sense if you assume that Knuckles asked her something along the lines of "But I thought you were taking Rotor to the hospital," so I can only guess that they forgot to include that dialogue bubble. Sally and Sonic walk into the next room, and she tells Sonic how Knuckles explained all the timeline shenaningans to her, and how she always felt that something wasn't right all these years. She then awkwardly explains that she never married Shadow for love, but only to try to bring stability to her kingdom. Frankly, I find that to be a pile of crap. Sally Acorn, the lifelong ringleader of the rebellion against not one but two different Robotniks, passively married an evil autocrat who likes to use torture on his enemies? Not fricking likely. Sally would have been at the head of the resistance against Shadow from the very start. It seems that even under a different writer, Mobius 25 Years Later is doomed to have every member of its cast acting completely out of character.
Tumblr media
Wow, it's that easy to get back together after twenty-five years apart? *sigh* Look, I think the reason this two-part arc fails is because it's ultimately working off an already-flawed base. I understand that some closure needed to be brought to the tangled mess that Kenders set up at the beginning of this era, but hell, I think it could have been done a lot better. Some people do like the whole King Shadow and dystopian future thing, but personally, I think it's just as inexplicable and out of character as everything in Kenders' version of events. I'm just glad to be done with it, as next issue we actually get to go back to the normal, interesting stuff.
Hedgehog Day
Writer: R. Chacon Pencils: Dave Manak Colors: Josh Ray
Well, we do have this little story before that happens. Apparently everyone in Knothole has decided to put together a second birthday celebration for Sonic several days after the previous one, the one Scourge crashed. Sonic wakes up at 10am on the morning of the make-up party, and begins his morning routine as his alarm clock informs him that Mina's latest hit "Soldier Boy" has just finished playing (note that this issue came out one year before "Soulja Boy" was released, so it's not a reference), that it's going to be in the mid-70s (Fahrenheit) today, and that many important people will be at the celebration such as the king and queen and Mina herself. However, the announcer on the radio then says that everyone is wondering where Sonic is as the party has already started, which wakes Sonic up out of his sleepy daze. He realizes that he accidentally set his alarm for the time the party was to start rather than when he actually wanted to wake up, and rushes to get ready, racing out the door and nearly barreling into a bunch of reporters looking for him.
Tumblr media
Ouch! Well, at least there's always tomorrow, right? The next morning, Sonic wakes up at 10am on the morning of the make-up party, and begins his morning routine as his alarm clock informs him that Mina's latest hit "Soldier Boy" has just finished playing, that it's going to be in the mid-70s today, and that many important people will be at the celebration such as the king and queen and Mina herself. However, the announcer on the radio then says that everyone is wondering where Sonic is as the party has already started, which wakes Sonic up out of his sleepy daze. He realizes that he accidentally set his alarm for the time the party was to start rather than when he actually wanted to wake up, and rushes to get ready. However, he hesitates before he races out the front door, struck by a strange suspicion that there's reporters outside waiting for him.
Tumblr media
Hmm, something's a bit fishy here… The next next morning, Sonic wakes up and shuts off his alarm, a bit disappointed that he didn't wake up in time to listen to "Soldier Boy." He asks the alarm clock if it's going to be in the 70s for his party today, and the announcer dutifully reports that it will be, repeating the same spiel from the past two mornings.
Tumblr media
I mean, maybe if you walked instead of ran, you might make it there in one piece, bro. But then again, this is Sonic we're talking about. He buries himself back under the covers to avoid the prying eyes of reporters looking in through his windows, but that doesn't stop them. They start looking for another entrance, ultimately climbing on top of his roof, which buckles and collapses under their weight. This time, Sonic isn't the only one stuck in the hospital, as all the reporters are injured from their fall as well. Finally, the next next next morning, Sonic has had enough and wakes up three hours before his celebration, making his way there and sitting in one of the folding chairs as everyone sets up around him, confident that now, there's no way he can miss the party!
Though the title of the story is a parody on the movie Groundhog Day, I do find it kind of funny that despite this clearly seeming like another fantastical and silly plot device, stuff like this actually does happen to people. They're called false awakenings, and consist of dreaming that you wake up and perform your morning routine, only to then "wake up" into another similar dream, and this repeats until you finally do regain consciousness for real. They can also be paired with stress dreams, meaning that you might wake up in a panic that you're late for school or work, only to wake up into the same situation again and again in a bizarre loop. So, in a way, this story is actually one of the most realistic in the entire comic! I'm sure that wasn't the intention, but the point still stands!
TUA Power HCs Part 1!
Luther
Discovered them at age 3 (He was the first)
He accidentally broke one of their nannies fingers
Had trouble controlling his strength (still does)
For personal training Reginald first made him build up his body
Because just cause he had incredible strength, didnt mean his body could take said strength
He used to accidentally break his arms when he used too much strength
They always healed fast though
As if they never broke to begin with
Baby Luther used to hide the fact that he broke/sprained/bruised his arms, legs, basically any part of his body because he felt like a failure whenever he got hurt
Later in life (maybe at 10?) Reginald discovers that Luther not only is super strong but also had super endurance
(Special Training was not fun that year, Reginald wanted to see how long he could last without food, water, air, shelter, etc.)
After that year, special training was a mix between building up his strength (weight lifting heavier and heavier objects every week) and building up his endurance (running around the room carrying a crap ton of weights, carrying a really really heavy weight and Reginald seeing how long he could carry it before his body gave out)
Diego
They first discovered his ability to breathe underwater first
Diego unlike his sibling absolutely adored bath time as a child
He would stay in the tub for hours if he could
One time his nanny had to leave him in the tub because one of his siblings was having a tantrum
She comes back to a sleeping Diego
Who's asleep in the tub
submerged in water
Was lowkey jealous of his siblings' powers while growing up
Reginald was so disappointed in him for having such a "useless ability"
Poor baby took it into heart :(
Special Training was awful before he found out his secondary power
Reginald wanted to see how long Diego could last underwater (he discovers Diego could last an indefinite amount of time down there)
He stopped liking water after that
He finds out about his secondary power at age 6
He likes to help Grace in cooking and usually cuts up the vegetables for her
He gets really good with the knife
So when Reginald demands he learns to wield a weapon he immediately chooses the knife
At first its was all stabby stabby but then one of his siblings goads him enough to rashly throw the knife at them
His aim is perfect. The knife is sailing through the air, going exactly where he wants it to be, except he wanted it to be in their head and oh god Diego panics, he didnt mean to throw that knife he never meant to hurt his siblings and he loves them and -
The knife is sailing towards his sibling's head and then it suddenly curves
Diego runs up to his sibling and hugs them and apologizes
Diego never wanted to pick up a knife after that
But then through some persuasion (Allison), he forgets the incident and picks it up again
Special training is all about accuracy and precision. All about moving targets, really tiny targets, living targets
Reginald wanted to know how much he could curve, what could he curve and all that jazz
Diego learns Physics because its an absolute must
(He learns how hard he has to throw for it to curve that much, how fast it needs to be to keep in the air even after it curves, how heavy should the knife be if he wants this specific result)
At first its hard and because he can curve anything he likes through pure instinct why does he need to learn Math?
But Reginald wants him to be as accurate as possible
(He motivates Diego by putting Mom and his siblings in situations where one false error could lead to their deaths)
He learns physics quickly
(Five and him bond over physics, Five helps him, He helps Five until Five gets too advanced and well...)
He actually gets super good and can do equations on the fly
People are constantly surprised at the amount of math needed for his powers
Allison
as a kid had absolutely no control on when her powers would activate
it would activate all the time leading to a lot of accidents
one time she snapped at Klaus to stop talking and he couldnt speak until she was able to reverse it
Reginald decided the best way for her to control it was through trigger phrases
she went through a lot of them because it wasnt cool enough for her
there was "listen up", "somebody once told me" (someone always interrupted her, usually Klaus, with the world was gonna roll me so she dropped it after like 3 uses) and a bunch more before settling on the iconic™ "I heard a rumor'
early on she learned that she had to be very precise with the wording or else the rumor wouldnt turn out the way she wanted it to
so special training was mainly focused on her wording, her pronunciation, and her learning other languages
allison is fluent in italian, french, spanish, mandarin, filipino, somali, she also can speak in a bunch of other languages but isnt super fluent
allison was actually pretty ok with special training until she was 10
thats when reggie brought in actual real life people
until that point she had only rumored her siblings (reginald actively encouraged it as long as he wasnt the one who got rumored) and occasionally the businessmen who came over to talk deals and shit
reggie was smart and only brought in people he was sure no one would miss, homeless hobos, drug addicts, people who lived by themselves and didnt have much family or any family at all
at first few meetings, she could stomach the feeling of wrongness
it was still easy for her to reason that what she was doing wasnt really wrong after all the commands she was issuing were really mild (like i heard a rumor you stubbed your toe, i heard a rumor you could play the piano perfectly)
they were just testing the reach of her powers
(could it rewrite your brain? create illusions, hallucinations? make you gain talents you never had? make you feel things?)
(reginald already knew her rumors could affect the memory, no need to test that, same thing with if her rumors could affect herself)
but then the more they pushed the boundaries the darker the rumors, the harder it was to stomach this sense of wrongness that threatened to swallow her whole
(could it override survival instincts? could it fake relationships? could it wreck relationships? can the human mind take multiple rumors at once? how about multiple conflicting rumors? how many rumors does it take to break the mind?)
its a lot easier to deal with special training when you cant remember
(but in her dreams she cant forget, she wakes up screaming, absolutely terrified and cant remember why)
Klaus
at first thought everyone could see the ghosts
actually he thought they werent ghosts cos they didnt appear to him with their death injuries
realized they were dead people when he accidentally walked through them
at first the ghosts were ok (they were mostly the nannies vanya killed so they were nice) they were loud and sobbed really really loud all the time but they didnt actively seek him and so he didnt actively seek them either
he still didn't like his powers even back then when they werent as bad as they are now
since he didnt really have any interest in his powers, reginald forced him to use them more, to explore them
klaus really didn't want to talk to any ghost so Reginald locks klaus into the mausoleum for the first time
this is where everything goes to shit btw
Klaus is absolutely terrified because these ghosts arent like the ghosts in the mansion (the nannies)
these ghost were malicious and horrible and they were dead for so long that they lost any sense of self or humanity in them
this is where klaus develops his fear of the ghost and his powers
this is where klaus loses a grip on his powers and it causes horrible repercussions
he sees the way they died now
and it terrifies him even more
from ages 8 to 11 hes facing the full force of his powers whenever hes trapped in the mausoleum
every session his fear gets worse and worse
the ghosts appearance actually reflects on how he feels about them actually
thats why ben and dave dont look awful
and why the rest of the ghost do
klaus loves ben and dave
he's absolutely terrified of the rest of them
he discovers that drugs numb their abilities when one of them gets hurt badly during training and is on really heavy pain medication
maybe it Five who broke 5 ribs when sparring because luther forgot to control his strength
Five couldn't jump at all when he was on those meds and he hated it
but Klaus? the moment he put two and two together he jumped at the opportunity to temporarily get rid of his powers
he would purposely get super banged up during training just to get rid of his powers and it scared the living shit out of his siblings
they ask him to stop and he does, he doesnt like it when he scares his siblings
but the ghosts get too much and klaus is severely tempted to fuck himself up to get that sweet relief that the pain meds provide
he stumbles upon Reggies alcohol cabinet and discovers that while getting drunk doesnt exactly cut off his powers it gives him this buzz that makes it a lot more bearable
he discovers drugs when he sneaks out one night to get more booze
he starts off with weed and gets hooked
the ghosts are always worse after coming down so he scrambles to get high as soon as possible
he doesnt try anything harder until ben dies
after ben dies he spirals
TUA Power HCs Part 2 is coming up in a bit, ask me if you wanna get tagged for it :)
Hal sat in the Nomad at his computer. The wedding had ended by now, and everyone had gone home, even that little boy Sunny had met before. Now she was the only one who was still outside, playing with her chickens and laughing happily from time to time. Hal smiled to himself a bit whenever he heard her. But Hal wasn't sure what to do now, or where to go. It was probably time to go, to finally show Sunny the world, but he didn't really want to leave, not without Dave. Although Hal knew that he wasn't coming back. Hal hadn't gotten the hint at first, this morning, when they were busy with preparations for the wedding, and Dave had told him that he would go out, and they shouldn't wait for him. Hal, who had been busy with convincing Sunny to wear the shoes Mei Ling had bought for her, only registered it in the back of his mind. But he realized what Dave was going to do once he noticed that his gun was missing. Hal shook his head. He wished he would have gotten it sooner. He wished he could at least have said goodbye. Hal tried to focus on his code, but his thoughts kept coming back to Dave. Where was he now? Was he already dead? It was a weird thought; that Dave could be dead somewhere and Hal wouldn't even know. Suddenly, he heard Sunny's scream from outside. Hal shot up immediately, almost knocking his chair over, and ran to the door. He should have known it. He should have known that it wasn't the right time for Sunny to go outside and now something had happened to her … where was she? Hal needed a moment, but then he spotted Sunny running across the tarmac, not noticing that the wind blew her little hat off her head, towards someone who was walking towards her … Someone Hal recognized immediately. It was Dave. Dave had come back! Sunny jumped right into his arms, and Dave caught her and lifted her up (although not with as much ease as he used to do) then the two of them walked over to the door, where Hal was still standing. "Uncle Dave is back!", Sunny proclaimed, and Hal smiled a bit more, still looking at Dave, as if he was afraid that he would vanish if Hal took his eyes off him. "Yeah, I noticed." "I'll make us some eggs!" Before anyone could object to this, Sunny had already run off. Hal wanted to say something, but couldn't think of anything. What did you say to someone who had just come back from the dead? Hal had a bunch of questions in his mind that he wanted to ask, but instead, he just pulled Dave into a hug. For a moment, they embraced, and Hal was just glad that Dave was here, and not dead somewhere, but then they let go of each other again. "I thought you're not coming back.", Hal said, silently, and Dave nodded. "Yeah, I wasn't going to, but I … well … had a change of plans." "But why?", Hal said, "I mean, I'm so glad you're back here, but what about Foxdie?" "Don't worry about that. Apparently Naomi 'forgot' to tell me a few things, one of them being that I'm not gonna cause an epidemic." "But … how did you find that out?" "Big Boss told me." "You're joking.", Hal said immediately, but then he saw the serious look on David's face, "…are you?" "It's kind of a long story, but I'll tell you everything." Dave smiled. "We do have time now."
It’s Been a While
Pairing: Daveed x Reader
Request: “Hey girl! Can you do a Daveed imagine where you and Daveed used to be best friends in high school and y’all kept in touch a little after but once he joined Hamilton he stopped talking to you. You posted something about being excited to go see the show and Daveed sees it and he like brings you backstage to talk, but y’all get into a fight about who stopped talking to who and eventually you give up and leave and he shows up to your apartment and does something really cute! Thanks 🥰🥰🥰” - @roxanne2020
Word Count: 1.8k
I had never been more excited, I was going to see Hamilton tonight. I had gotten a text the other day from the one and only Lin-Manuel Miranda. He had told me that he was friends with Daveed and that Daveed had mentioned me and our past. Lin said that Daveed had brought up how he regretted that we lost contact. Lin gave me a ticket for the show tonight so that I could finally see Daveed after all these years.
Daveed had been my best friend in high school. We were the friends who told each other everything and we valued our friendship more than anything. We both went to different colleges and we started talking a lot less. Then he got cast in Hamilton and moved off to New York. We hadn’t spoken since besides a few texts on birthdays or holidays.
I wondered if Daveed would even want to talk to me. It had been so long and I was unsure if we could be friends again or if too much time had passed.
I had gotten ready for the show and took a picture in my outfit. I posted it to Instagram with the caption: Seeing Hamilton tonight, let’s see if it’s as amazing as everyone says it is.
I checked my hair in the mirror one last time and then left my apartment. Ironically, I had moved to New York after college. I always wondered if I would randomly run into Daveed in the street, it never happened though.
I got on the subway and checked my phone. I saw a new comment on my Instagram post. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was from Daveed. It said “Looking forward to seeing a familiar face in the audience”.
I felt my cheeks heat up a little and I felt a familiar warm feeling in my chest. With all this time apart, I may have developed the slightest crush on Daveed. I knew it was weird, especially since at one point he was my ride or die.
I eventually got to the theatre and I went in and found my seat. I got chills when the show started. Then Daveed walked on stage and it was like the world froze. It was then in that moment that I realized how much I had missed him.
The show ended and I was beyond blown away. My expectations had been high, but this surpassed any expectation I had. I didn’t think this show could truly be as good as everyone said it was, but they were all right. This show was phenomenal.
I was standing, along with the rest of the theatre, and applauding as the cast took their final bows. Daveed made eye contact with me as he walked off the stage and he froze for a second, as if it was too good to be true. His eyes lit up and he gave me a soft smile, before leaving the stage.
Then, a few minutes later, my phone started to ring. I saw Daveed’s name on my screen. I answered the phone with a smile on my face. “Hello there stranger” I said, giggling. “So you’re really here?” He asked. “Yeah, I am” I said. “Can you come backstage? I need to see you” he told me. “Anything for you” I told him, smiling.
He told me who to talk to and then he hung up. I found the person who worked for the theatre and told them what Daveed told me to say. The employee let me backstage.
I was in a hallway with a bunch of the cast and ensemble running up and down the halls. I was overwhelmed to say the least. How would I find Daveed? Then I saw a familiar face. I recognized Lin.
“Hey Y/N, you made it” he said, running over and giving me a hug. “Yeah, I wouldn’t miss it. The show was fantastic. If you don’t mind, can you tell me where I can find Daveed?” I asked him.
“Come on, I’ll bring you to his dressing room” he said, as he started walking down the hallway. I followed him, “I don’t know how you don’t get lost down here” I told him, honestly. “You have no idea how many times I got lost during the first few weeks of rehearsals” Lin said, laughing. Then we walked up to a door that said Daveed’s name on it.
Lin knocked on the door and I heard Daveeed say “come in”. Lin opened the door and stuck his head in. “Someone's here to see you Diggs” Lin told him. “Send her in please” Daveed said, knowing it was me.
“Have fun” Lin said to me, before he walked away. I carefully walked into his room and his eyes lit up when he saw me. He ran over and picked me up into his arms and spun me around.
He carefully placed me back on the ground. We both had the biggest smiles on our faces. It felt like no time had passed at all.
“It’s been a while, you look good Y/N” he told me, still smiling. “You too, so is the success treating you? You were amazing tonight by the way” I told him. “Oh thank you, I had to put on a great performance, I had someone important in the audience” he said.
He grabbed one of my hands and pulled me over to the couch. He sat down and I sat next to him. He grabbed my legs and put them across his lap. Daveed and I had spent many nights as teenagers in this position, talking for hours and watching movies.
“It’s been so long” I said, staring into his eyes. “I’ve really missed you” he said, grabbing my hand. “I’ve missed you too” I said, leaning my head on his shoulder.
“Y/N, why’d you ever stop talking to me?” He asked, seriously. “Are you kidding? You were the one who stopped talking to me. You moved to New York City and fame happened and you never reached back out to me. I was giving you time to adjust to the move and I figured you would call me when you settled in” I told him, so confused as to how he thought I ended our friendship.
I pulled my legs off his lap and stood up and walked to the other side of the room. “Yeah right Y/N. You never reached out to me either. And when you moved to New York a year later and you still didn’t reach out. Don’t try and pin this on me” Daveed argued.
“I can’t even listen to you anymore, you used to be my best friend and I told you everything. And one day you just started treating me like I didn’t exist and it broke my heart. Now, you’re sitting here and you can’t even take responsibility for what you did” I yelled. I walked out of the door and slammed it behind me.
I quickly started to walk down the hallway, I had tears welling up in my eyes. I ran into Lin and he looked confused. “Hey what’s wrong? What happened?” He asked me. “Thank you for being concerned, I just really have to get out of here” I told him. He nodded, understandingly. I rushed past him and eventually ended up out on the cold New York street.
I called a cab, not wanting to risk the subway at night time. I got in and told the driver my address. After a few minutes, we pulled up out my apartment complex. I thanked the driver and gave them a tip. I quickly rushed inside my apartment.
I changed into some sweatpants and a hoodie. I couldn’t believe that I actually thought Daveed and I could be friends again. I had been looking forward to things just feeling natural again. I made myself a cup of tea and curled up on my couch and looked out my window.
Then I heard a knock at the door. I put down my mug and walked to the door. I looked through the peephole and saw that it was Daveed.
I unlocked the door and opened it. Only then, did I realize what he was holding. He had a huge bouquet of flowers, a teddy bear, and my favorite candy bar. “Uh...hi” I said, shyly. “I brought you some stuff” he said, smiling.
“Isn’t this the same stuff you brought me when I got dumped by Harley Simmons?” I asked, only then remembering it. In high school, I dated our school’s star football player and he dumped me in front of the whole school and I was devastated. “It cheered you up then, so I hoped it could cheer you up now” he said, hopefully.
“Do you want to come in?” I asked him. He smiled at me and followed me inside. He set down the gifts on my coffee table. I sat down next to him on the couch.
“I am so sorry for how our conversation ended. I was being selfish and I didn’t look at things from your perspective. I never should of ignored you. I don’t want argue over who should of reached out first, I just want to tell you that it was mistake of me to not reach out. I never wanted to make you upset, I was only caring about myself and it was wrong. I really hope you can forgive me, I want us to move on and be friends again” Daveed confessed.
“I could’ve reached out just as easy as you could of, but I didn’t. This falls on both of us. Of course I want to be friends again. Not being friends with you felt so lonely, I felt like you had forgotten all about me” I told him. Then I saw Daveed smirk.
He held his hand out in front of me. I saw a bracelet on his wrist that I had given him when we were saying goodbye before we both left for college. “You never forgot me?” I asked in shock. “How could I forget the first girl I ever loved?” He asked me, interlacing our fingers.
I was so shocked, did he reciprocate my feelings? “You loved me?” I asked him. I was praying he wouldn’t say that he used to love me and didn’t anymore. “I always have” he said, smiling. I smiled back at him and he leaned in and kissed me. He cupped my face and I held onto his forearms.
We both pulled away and I started to blush. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that” he said. “You want to know something?” I asked him, excitedly. “Tell me” he said, chuckling at how excited I was. “I never forgot about you either” I told him, rolling up my sleeve and revealing the matching bracelet.
Watching A Broken Frame music videos for the first time!
Carrying on with my Depeche Mode video rewatch project with the vids for A Broken Frame (first post is found here https://eternaleve.tumblr.com/post/624649762286780416/ive-spent-the-course-of-covid-lockdown-cycling)
I looked through my vinyl and found I did not steal my mother’s Depeche Mode singles from this album (I only stole all her Elvis Costello and Joy Division and a bunch of Japan singles which I suspect she snuck to me in hopes of making me like them) but they are all mysteriously gone. My abusive stepdad recently moved out and I have thoughts about what property he took, but this just seems petty.
Tumblr media
Anyway, let’s talk about A Broken Frame! Vince Clarke left the band to go and be the Paul McCartney of 80s electronic music, forming Yazoo and Erasure. Apparently he did not like success and touring and stuff, which is far because it’s a lot of pressure, so he’s out and Alan Wilder is in after responding to an ad in Melody Maker. Remember music journalism? He joined as a tour keyboardist and appears in the videos for the album, but didn’t contribute to the album.
 A Broken Frame was released eleven months after Speak & Spell, which doesn’t seem to be enough time to me for a band to create another whole album's worth of material. It just seems that a band spends a few years perfecting their sound and a selection of songs, and then a record label says, ‘Great! Now do the same thing, but in a much shorter timeframe, under much more stress, and in snatched moments between being shuttled from gig venue to gig venue!’. I understand there’s a ~hype train~ that music acts have to follow, because bands can slip out of notice so fricking quickly, but the pressure does not seem set up to maintain the mental and emotional well-being of people. I’m sure nothing like that will happen in the history of this bad though!
Tumblr media
This album cover is considered one of the world’s greatest photographs for a reason. It’s stark and beautiful and has echoes of socialist realism and is just a really striking image. I don’t know who has final say over art direction in the band but whoever does has a great eye for images. The picture is taken over by Duxford and as I’m from the Midlands I have been to Duxford on a hundred school trips (it has a big air centre with WW2 planes and things and bits of the Berlin Wall), so I’ve probably been past this field an uncountable number of times without even realising it.
See You (Jan 1982, No 6 UK charts)
Tumblr media
I like how it looks like fuzzy felt. It feels very, very different from the singles art from the last album, I guess to indicate a clear difference in direction? Maybe? This is the first single for the band written by Martin Gore and starting his reign as songwriter.
All the music videos for this album were directed by Julien Temple and are Not Liked by the band. I generally quite like Julien Temple’s work and watched a lot of it as a teen (stepdad being hugely into the Pistols), so I am intrigued to say the least how these will turn out to be.
Tumblr media
This does give me a bit of a nostalgia kick for an old-fashioned style train station. It’s pretty much what my home station used to look like before everything was privatised, bought out by Virgin, turned bright red and full of commuters. I like how the station sparks to the beat of the music and that someone okayed an actual spending budget for this time around.
Tumblr media
YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE STATION THE PHOTOBOOTH IS HAUNTED
Tumblr media
Not going to lie, this looks 100% like my Dad’s first ever passport photo. I like the addition of the bowtie. It adds a real ‘First Communion’ vibe to the whole look. The nose stud… well, I had a nose stud at the exact same period of my life. Same age too, I think, only mine stayed around a lot longer when it definitely should not have done.
Tumblr media
It was at that moment he knew he had made a grave mistake in confronting the ‘Telephone Box Killer’ on his own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Insert a standard ‘Original Selfie’ joke here. The use of the photobooth gives a cute little through line in the video, as well as giving other band members a chance to be present. I remember using photobooths to take fun photos, before they started costing so much goddamned money and put them only in the most inconvenient places. I still have a bunch that I keep in my purse.
Tumblr media
… And now everyone’s working an office job? To show the passage of time? Or because it’s now a bit with music, so we’re showing the use of keyboards through office equipment that sort of requires you to make similar hand movements?
Tumblr media
Something, something, statement about technology? The photobooth theme was fine! It was cute! It said something about the regret and passage of time from teen to young adult romance! Why are there now a lot of calculators?
Tumblr media
Just in case you forgot - the single’s out now. Wink, wink.
Tumblr media
But let’s go back and check in with our corporate overlords. Bob, how are you doing on the spyware floor?
Tumblr media
… is this Julien Temple? Is it a music video within a music video? Did he put himself in the video? Could this part not have been done by a member of the band? Like, y’know, that new one who was clearly added in partly through this video?
I like the main core storyline of the video - thinking about a past relationship and then happening to run into them again unexpectedly - but I can see why this is perhaps not well thought of. Next one!
The Meaning of Love (April 82, No 12 UK charts)
Tumblr media
This reminds me a lot of the cover for the first Adrian Mole book which was published the same year. It does not match the first single at all or the album, but I guess the album art was yet to be done? Or maybe two different departments handled them, because I would have gone with a different single cover if I knew that one of the greatest photographs of all time was in the wings for the album.
Tumblr media
Reader, my heart dropped. I knew we were in for some deeply 80s bullshit. And, like, not good 80s bullshit.
Tumblr media
This is the lounge act in the cruiseship of my nightmares
Tumblr media
Martin Gore there looking like 99% of the lesbians on the DIY punk scene.
Tumblr media
What the fuck is going on?
Tumblr media
What, and I must reiterate, the fuck is going on? Are those pies? Pie eyes? Pie eye glasses? What does it mean?
Tumblr media
Now’s not the time for your science homework, it’s time to film a music video.
Tumblr media
Great, I know what image will be repeating in my night terrors tonight. Martin Gore’s face earnestly singing at me from the depths of a paramecium.
Tumblr media
THIS JUST GETS WORSE AND WORSE. THERE IS NO SITUATION ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET MADE BETTER WITH PUPPETS.
Tumblr media
No, my night paralysis nightmare will be Dave Gahan’s face turning into a fucking pie over and over and over again.
Tumblr media
Oh, I see, the Meaning of Love is that your wife will turn into a bitter harpy that won’t let you live your dream and also your life is ruined because she keeps letting the puppets sleep in the bed.
I guess the video has a sort of XTC vibe? It does remind me of the video of ‘Making Plans for Nigel’, which I do like, but also this video is fucking awful should be seen to be believed. I liked the band’s awkward choreography which was four men showing how much they did not want to be doing any of this.
Leave In Silence (August 82, No 18)
Tumblr media
The font is nice. That’s about all there is to say for this. It doesn’t match the other two singles. I’m not saying everything has to be matchy-matchy, but it is nice to have visual similarity and consistency. This looks like the record label gave up on trying.
Tumblr media
Okay, so we’ve got the album art sorted and starting out with a - I guess you could call it ‘low rural farming vocalisation’, and neither of these two things match the other singles or music videos, which have had a very poppy, teen girl, Smash Hits vibe.
Tumblr media
This week on The Generation Game, you could win a stainless steel bowl, a cuddly toy, and the lead singer of Depeche Mode!
Tumblr media
This video started with a group of people vocalising while pouring out grain and looking very plaguecore, now we’re all playing around on a conveyor belt because I think Julien Temple has run out of ideas and is being artsy and surreal and weird to cover that up.
Tumblr media
Ladies and gentleman, I’m sad to say that ‘The Fanciest Little Cowboy’ competition will not be running this year due to a lack of other contestants. This is a very fancy Little Cowboy though.
Tumblr media
…. I…. what?
Tumblr media
I have seen many bad, bad, bad cursed images in my time, but this is going straight up to the top. What the fuck does this say about the song? The band? The image the record label is trying to project? This pointless weird imagery for the sake of being pointless and weird.
Tumblr media
It’s okay, Jess. Bright Red Martin Gore can’t really hurt you. Only haunt you.
Tumblr media
And now spacehoppers. Because of course spacehoppers!
Tumblr media
The players from Pathologic show up to make a cameo appearance, matching nothing in the video, and seeming wildly out of place with everything else. Pick a theme or story, Julien! It is EITHER the Generation Game OR a terrifying children’s show OR guttural Soviet inspired plaguecore. You can pick one! Not all of them!
Tumblr media
The Blue Man Group really had a rough start. The wheat is… just there. Because I guess Julien Temple couldn’t think of how to organically weave it an advertisement for the album. So there’s just a bundle of wheat for no good reason.
Tumblr media
By this point, same, mate. That is the only reaction I am having.
These videos were… not great. I think ‘See You’ is the best and most cohesive - it tells a cute little story that ties in with the themes of the song and provides an emotional resonance. And then things just go off the bloody chain a bit. They get weird and experimental in a way that does not work in selling the band or the song. They seem pretty disconnected from what a music video should be and Julien Temple seemed to just run out of ideas by ‘Leave In Silence’. C- Mr Temple, must try harder.
And then onto Construction Time Again! ... well, when I get round to it. In a few days maybe.
