here’s where I just keep running into a brick wall in my Yellowjackets analysis. Jackie is a saint. she’s preserved forever in her high school glory - Shauna even says directly to Jackie that high school is the best her life will ever get. It’s the last thing she ever says to her. Jackie is preserved as a martyr & that’s not just relevant but integral to the show. Shauna loves the saints because they’re so tragic, & Jackie becomes a tragic saint.
Javi is much the same. He died an innocent child, naively trying to protect a friend in a brutal world. His memory will always be… pure. He’s the first to die in this new regime, with actual, intact cannibalistic rituals that they choose to enact (as opposed to the accidental brutality that was Jackie’s cannibalization.) Travis is a bit different, in terms of characters whose deaths drive the story. He is a love interest first & foremost. His role, narratively, serves Natalie. That’s not a critique, just a comment. When he consumes Javi’s heart, he is giving in to the new regime. He becomes the cannibal princess while Natalie is the queen - literally, she drew the queen card. This is just what’s happening.
but like… ok. Travis can’t even be held accountable any further. His actions in season 3 will surely be to serve Natalie. so, ultimately, he’s still a tragic figure. essentially, he’s Natalie’s dead wife.
but I guess where I run into the issue is… Natalie’s curse has ALWAYS been to LIVE. she & Jackie are the same character in different fonts. re-watching I’m more behind that theoretical approach than ever. they are both the only two to oppose the cannibalism & rape in “doomcoming.” & it’s extremely relevant that Natalie, Travis, & Javi are all missing when Jackie is locked out. like. that is very important to remember.
season 2 persistently shows Natalie being saved against her will as deliberate parallels. Travis saves her when he tries to dive into the icy water after the moose. & Misty saving Natalie when she tries to save Javi is, if you ask me, one of THEE most important & definitive moments of the entire show if not THE most important next to Shauna telling Jackie to leave the cabin.
so like…. what it comes down to is that I guess Natalie dying makes sense narratively in the moment. but how… how will they move forward? She is the cannibal queen now. How the fuck will that work with the adult timeline with no Juliet Lewis? How will that work with the theme that Natalie’s curse is to live with what she’s done & been part of while Jackie’s is to die a saint? To me it feels like the writers forgot what they were doing. They’ve taken a perfectly good character foil & killed her off in a boring & contrived writing mistake is what they’ve done

i can not handle season 2 episode 2 of yellowjackets.
this contains heavy spoilers as well as my complete review and thoughts on the episode.
all tws are (hopefully) tagged.
its the most disturbing, by far.
shauna dealing with jackie makes me almost vomit. the way shauna acts, in every single way, that jackie is alive. i was terrified by the sight.
tai's sleepwalking also getting progressively worse and worse plays into so much more of the episode. she is even able to cut herself free from the rope she and van tie around each other and almost stumbles off a cliff trying to follow the man with no eyes.
lottie having to reveal the way travis died to nat, i was throughly in tears at this point. nat's reaction and travis's trauma makes me want more of their interactions.
as well as that, laura lee's ghost, which is essentially the anti jackie. instead of being there to remind shauna of what she has done, laura lee is there as an omen of death and rebirth.
nat and travis' hunting expedition also made me cry like a bitch, but i got quite upset at nat. they split up in opposite directions. nat to hunt and travis to find javi. nat fakes finding one of javi's jackets bloody to get travis some closure. it's sweet in a genuinely fucked up way.
but, that gesture eventually leads to them having sex, which nat has a perfectly fun time doing. but travis imagines lottie walking him through the whole thing. the entire time as he has sex with nat, lottie guides him. which leads into jackie's cremation failure, which i will get to.
lottie knows what shauna and jackie are doing in the shed, well mostly shauna, jackie can't do much. shauna is losing everything she has out there i cant even explain how sick to my stomach i felt watching her burn jackie.
"jackie, i'll never have another friend like you. i don't even know where you end and i begin. i'm sorry. and i love you." - shauna to jackie as she cremated her.
along with jackie they also cremate javi's jacket.
callie, sweet callie. she is going through it. she broke up with kyle. so her and her bestie go to a bar, eventually callie meets this guy and spills it all about shauna cheating on jeff.
turns out the guy is kevin's partner, you know nat's old detective friend, that is on adam (shauna's mistress's) case. it's a moment. kevin even comes to question shauna.
now modern day tai is going through it. she hallucinates sammy coming to her house, and then after she calls her ex wife, they find out that sammy has been at school for 2 hours. tai later gets in a car crash with simone in the car.
anyways, back to our old 1996 crew. jackie's cremation doesn't go through. some weird force sets out the fire right as she is perfectly cooked. so all the crew eat her. they imagine they are in ancient greece, feasting on foods of the past, the gorge themselves on jackie's corpse. like wild animals.
the only one who doesn't is coach ben, and he is terrified. that man, i worry for him. genuinely.
and that is how we wrap up season 2 episode 2 of yellowjackets.
it was an amazing episode, and it felt like a season premiere more than the last one. the pacing was great, and the cinematography had me in shambles. i felt sick to my stomach, yet entranced the whole time. nothing could have prepared me for it.
10/10

You’re telling me Taissa was worried enough about Natalie to send her to rehab multiple times & say “who does Natalie have?” so sadly. But she didn’t check up on Van who was living alone, not paying her bills, not healthy, not happy ONCE… I DON’T BELIEVE IT. That kind of love doesn’t fade 😭.

2023 AO3 Year-End Fic Review
I found the AO3 review I had made last year and decided to fill it out for 2023! Answer all the questions yourself, then tag some friends!
What is your AO3 account?
I'm at LittleQueenTrashMouth on AO3!
2. How many words did you write total in 2023?
I wrote 69, 299 words in 2023 for 4 different fandoms! Well 3-4, since one fic was a crossover fic. Most of that was for ACOTAR, which is HILARIOUS considering last year I was so convinced that I was done with ACOTAR. I played myself. It's also way more words than I wrote the past few years, which is cool!
3. How many fics did you publish in 2023? How many multichapters vs oneshots?
I published 17 fics in 2023, 15 of which were for ACOTAR. 3 of those are multichapter, and the other 14 were oneshots.
4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic?
The longest fic CONTINUES to be my multichapter Tamlin/Lucien fic, lovely and lonely, which is now at 27,528 words and is ALMOST DONE. My longest oneshot is the Nesta/Eris fic, counterintelligence, which is at 4,446 words. The shortest fic I wrote last year was you up?, which is a modern AU Tamlin/Rhysand fic.
5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic?
My most popular fic was lovely and lonely, which is now at 2,044 hits and 107 kudos!! My least popular fic was the Tamlin/Briar fic Come, my drifting flower, which is at 29 hits and 5 kudos. But TO BE FAIR all the fics I wrote for my gift exchanges are at the bottom of the list for hits/kudos, because they were only published like a week ago!! So the least popular fic that has been online for over a month is my Eris Week fic Concession Strategy, which is at 168 hits and 11 kudos. BUT ACTUALLY I'm realizing now that somebody put the fic in a secret collection so nobody has been able to read it in months lmao. So my REAL ACTUAL least popular fic is the Tamlin/Amarantha fic obsessed with you, at 226 hits and 17 kudos.
6. What fic didn't perform as well as you thought it would?
I feel like I've answered this before lmao but ANYWAY I thought a knife for every heart would perform a little better. It's been up since March and has 143 hits. I guess people don't want to read about Lestat and the Corinthian fucking nasty.
7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?
ALREADY my Nesta/Eris ACOTAR secret santa fic soare cu dinți is performing way better than expected! It was posted just a couple weeks ago and already has 262 hits, which is PRETTY GOOD for an ACOTAR rarepair! In general I've found that Neris fandom fucking SHOWS UP when you write them fic, which is awesome!!!
8. What was your favorite fic you wrote in 2023?
LMAO my favorite fic this year continues to be my Yellowjackets fic, Lagomorpha. idk I just love writing body horror and psychosexual tension and learning about how fucked up rabbits are. I also just LOVE Shauna, I'd really like to write more from her POV in the future!!!
9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2023?
OKAY LISTEN!!!! yall are very talented but really stood no chance against @goforth-ladymidnight's Tamcien fic A Second Chance. Seriously, if you haven't read this fic, GO READ IT RIGHT NOW!!! IT'S AMAZING!!! LIFE CHANGING!!!! EARTH SHATTERING!!!
10. Tag your friends to have them do this year-end fic review as well!!
OKIE I TAG PEOPLE!!! if you see this and I don't tag you, please fill it out!!

also um ok i would die for natalie but teen shauna is literally right that it should have been her crowned antler queen like how is the person skinning and gutting the frozen fifteen year old angelface innocent baby so that everyone can live another week not obviously recognized as the most important one. not a narrative criticism btw i think it’s INCREDIBLE that they showed us the idea that this kind of high school insecurity and pettiness can survive the trauma of cannibalizing your bestie and having your bestie’s boyfriend’s stillbirth like genuinely amazing iconic stuff.

In terms of the natural order of things, I was put on this earth to watch good movies. I was not put on this earth to answer emails. Unfortunately we have not yet entered an era where, as an adult, you can have one without the other.

Florence Welch goes pop punk? (⊙_◎)
Recorded for the second season of Yellowjackets, Florence + the Machine turn No Doubt’s 90s feminist pop punk anthem into a feverish glam rock melodrama. It probably shouldn’t work, yet Welch gives the track a murky undertone of horror that superbly echoes the Showtime series’ tragic and harrowing tale of teenage girlhood.
Says Welch (via Stereogum):
‘I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a “deeply unsettling” way for the show. We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone who’s first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani it was a dream job.’
I’d really love it if Florence + co. did make a return to the ramshackle pop punk of ‘Kiss With a Fist’… (✿◠‿◠)

YELLOWJACKETS (Season 2) REVIEW
The Yellowjackets barely made it through the summer, but as winter begins to bite, we'll see if hunger and desperation turn into full-on psychosis. Meanwhile, 25 years later, each survivor must determine if the darkness is coming for them or from them.
Over the past year, Yellowjackets has become a sleeper hit for Showtime. Its mysteries and enthralling story kept viewers engaged weekly, with theory spiraling all over the internet. However, a question soon became apparent: Would the show fall victim to a sophomore slump? Sadly, Yellowjackets takes a massive dive in quality in its second season with its incredibly messy and directionless story.
This second season is incredibly frustrating. There are many moments when the show hits its strides masterfully, but it is sadly weighed down by bad filler and messy stories. As with the first season, the teen/wilderness storyline is much better than the survivor storyline. However, the wilderness storyline does take a bit of a fall due to nearly 50% of it being meaningless filler and some elements, such as extreme starvation and the drive to cannibalism, not being fleshed out enough. With that said, it at least knows its direction and hits all its themes and emotional moments well. The same can't be stated for the survivor storyline. The survivor storyline is entirely directionless as it experiments on which direction it wants to go. It's messy and apparent that none of the writers collaborated while developing the survivor story. The characters are given busy work and focus on the wrong storylines. The dark Tia/Van storyline is fanservice, and the creepy cop vs. Shauna's family overstayed its welcome. Natalie should be with Lottie, not Lisa when confronting her trauma. At least the Misty and Walter storyline was incredibly entertaining, with Ricci and Wood having the time of their lives playing psychopathic serial killers. However, with Walter becoming a Duex Ex Machina for the Adam Martin murder subplot, they lazily wrote their way out of a conflict and backed themselves into a corner. The writers dragged their feet building to their climax and speedrun right through the climax. It really makes me wonder why I should want the WGA to have a raise when this is the quality of writing they put out.
Now one thing that is consistent in this second season is the performances of the ensemble cast. However, in this second season, the teen performances are the real show-stealers that will sadly not get recognized by any award circuit. Sophie Nelisse, Sophie Thatcher, and Samantha Hanratty are the biggest standouts. While Nelisse gives a heartbreaking and Emmy-worthy performance as teen Shauna. Her screams were harrowing and is more deserving of a nomination than Melanie Lynskey. As with the adults, all the returning adult characters give fantastic performances, with Christina Ricci, Sarah Desjardins, and Warren Kole being the biggest standouts of the group. As for the new additions, Simon Kessell gives a good performance as adult Lottie by balancing insanity and kindness. Though she is the least like her teen counterpart. Lauren Ambrose kills it as adult Van but is wasted due to a lack of screen time and material. Elijah Wood is fantastic at playing a male version of Misty. Him and Ricci have impeccable chemistry on screen, and together they saved a lot of the survivor storytime due to their performances that might snag the pair Emmy nominations.
Now between the incredibly questionable-looking snow and some fantastic 90s needle drops, is there any hope for Yellowjackets? My optimistic answer would be yes. The WGA strike has delayed writing, which will most likely help the show going forward because it will allow the writers and showrunners to sit and simmer on the criticism of this latest season. As well as allowing the showrunners and Showtime to realize that this show is not meant for five seasons. Ideally, three seasons, but four because we are past the point of no return. This series needs to get its writing and story together before going forward instead of this directionless mess of a season. Overall, the latest season of Yellowjackets has moments of brilliance and fantastic acting, but its directionless story heavily drags it down.
My Rating: B-
