Ghostbusters (2022/12/18)

Phoebe was convinced her life was over.

Honestly, she thought after battling ghosts and saving the world that she’d be prepared for whatever life through her way.

Not this.

Sometimes Phoebe was too smart for her own good. She wasn’t good at people or feelings, but she was awfully self-aware.

It was easy to see she wasn’t like the other kids at school.

Podcast was nice. He made her feel like she wasn’t so weird. But the other kids?

They were quick to give her all kinds of cheerful labels.

At first, Phoebe just figured everyone was teased. Everyone had their flaws and struggled, that’s just how it was.

She didn’t even think anything was wrong until the day the teacher scolded her for twisting her wrists every few moments.

“Phoebe, please keep still. It’s very distracting to the rest of the class.” The teacher had told her with a slight sigh of exasperation.

But Phoebe didn’t understand. What was distracting about her moving her hands around? And the thought of not doing so made her very uncomfortable.

So, Phoebe did what she did best, question things. “Why?”

She heard kids snickering at her, and noticed Podcast’s nervous look, like he was trying to silently tell her to let it go. She wouldn’t.

“I told you, it’s distracting.” Was the teacher’s short reply.

“But I can’t help it.” She really couldn’t.

“Yes you can. Don’t do it again, understand me?”

She didn’t. But she had stopped twisting her wrists and the general itchiness was coming back; the discomfort.

The teacher went back to her desk and Phoebe heard the laughter of the other kids.

“Haha, can’t expect a sped to understand.”

Phoebe’s eyebrows furrowed, she glanced over at Podcast who looked horrified at their words. “What’s a sped?”

Podcast hesitated, as if debating in his head whether or not he should tell her the truth or make something up.

Which was silly, because Phoebe would just look it up later in the library if she had to.

But Podcast seemed to decide it was ultimately better if he just told her. “It um, it means Special Education. They’re making fun of you for being…” He winced. “Different, in the head.”

Phoebe’s confusion must have been obvious, because Podcast just looked more distressed. “Which isn’t bad! Not to me, I mean. I like who you are, even if it’s not, you know…neurotypical.”

What? Neurotypical?

What the hell was he on about?

Podcast frowned. “Phoebe…you are Autistic, aren’t you?”

That was the moment that made Phoebe only hear static for the rest of the day.

After that came the obsessive researching. Phoebe must’ve read every single book on Autism in the library.

It was frustrating just how many of them were centered around boys with Autism, as oppose to girls, but from the few books on the subject Phoebe could tell the symptoms were immensely different.

And she also realized how much she lined up them.

The specific interests, like reserved attitude, difficulty with emotions, trying to fit in with the crowd but not really getting it…

And a million more.

Phoebe wanted to bring it up to her mother, see if she could get an official diagnosis, but Phoebe wasn’t stupid and looked into how that worked as well.

And that cost money. A lot of money. Money they didn’t have.

Then again, she obviously didn’t need the label, everyone considered her a freak of nature already.

“Whoa, you look like someone spit in your cereal.” Trevor teased when he came into the kitchen to grab a snack and found Phoebe poking at her cereal with the spoon instead of eating it.

Phoebe’s frown deepened. “You could tell?”

Trevor paused his movements, keeping his back turned to her. He snatched an apple from the counter. “’Course I could.”

When Phoebe didn’t say anything, Trevor sighed and turned to her, leaning against the table and smiling at her. “Alright, what’s up? Why are you eating soggy cereal at midnight like a weirdo?”

Phoebe couldn’t help flinching at the weirdo comment, making Trevor’s eyebrows furrow. “Seriously, what’s up?”

“…I’m not like other kids.” Phoebe confessed, eyes focused on the cereal.

Trevor blinked. “You mean cause you’re really smart?”

She shook her head.

“Because you still feel like the new kid?”

Another shake.

Trevor huffed. “Okay, work with me Pheebs. I’m not a mind reader here.”

Phoebe swallowed hard. “I have Autism.”

A heavy silence fell over the sibling, and for a terrifying moment Phoebe swore Trevor was going to laugh at her or insist there was no way.

But he didn’t do either of those things.

“I…kind of figured.” Phoebe’s eyes shot up to meet his own in disbelief.

“What!?”

Trevor gave her a lopsided smile. “When you were little you never smiled at mom, or laughed. She was so freaked out, thought you hated her.”

Phoebe frowned at this, confusion painting her face.

He continued. “And you wouldn’t eat when mom tried to spoon feed you something. You’d turn your nose up no matter what it was like some kind of snob.” He laughed at the memory. “But then I tried, with my left hand, and to complied without a problem.”

“You’re not left handed.” Phoebe protested.

“Nope, but I was desperate so I started trying things that didn’t make sense. When I used my other hand you had no problem, and it was the same for everything. If one of us tried to hold your hand with our right, you hated it, but if it was our left then it was fine.” Trevor explained with a shrug.

Phoebe’s eyes widened. “That’s so bizarre.”

He chuckled. “Maybe, but it’s just how it was.” He smirked. “And the first time you ever laughed? That was when you were about…four. Mom tried to tickle you to make you laugh but you just cried and cried. Something about the touch was too overwhelming-“

“Sensory overload.” Phoebe breathed. He nodded.

“Yeah, exactly. Well, I decided to try for myself, but instead of normal tickling, I went like this.” Trevor gently reached out one finger poked Phoebe’s shoulder a few times, making her giggle.

He grinned. “And just like that, you laughed. You weren’t an unhappy kid, and you didn’t hate us. We just had to figure out how to do things differently for you.”

Phoebe looked down. “Mom must’ve felt really bad.”

“Maybe, but I think she was mostly just confused. Once we figured out what do it, it got better.”

Phoebe hummed softly.

“My point is Pheebs, is that yes, you’re different from other kids, but that doesn’t- it doesn’t make you bad. And maybe my opinion doesn’t count since I’m just your totally lame big brother,” He teased which made her smile. “But I think you’re pretty great.”

This had her smiling wider. “Thanks Trevor.”

Trevor came around the table and for a second Phoebe thought he was gonna hug her and she was ready to protest because she really wasn’t a hugger-

But of course, he knew that, she shouldn’t be surprised. He set a gentle hand on the top of her head and pressed his forehead to her, eyes closed in content. Phoebe followed suit and decided this was much better than a hug.

“Now get to bed, mom’s gonna flip if she realizes you’re awake.”

Phoebe complied, and realized being different didn’t feel so scary. At least not anymore.

Yup yup yup, back at this.

Most of these are Paul Dano characters because he’s great at playing characters that’s obviously ND-Coded :D

Just to let you know, whenever I write these for certain characters it’s because I personally think that they are autistic and because I currently have a hyperfixation on something related to them.

WARNING! Spoilers I guess for Little miss sunshine and prisoners!

Dwayne Hoover (Little Miss Sunshine)

My comfort film and character to be completely honest.

Special interest: Jets/Planes and Flying

Stimming: jumping, fidgeting with his hands/pen cap, dancing *insert end dancing scene*

Traits: Very monotone in general, a dry sense of humor, very passionate about his special interest, Has a hard time showing empathy therefore chooses to not show any (says he hates everyone even tho you can clearly see that he loves most of his family), Selective Mutism

Notes: He literary has a meltdown when he found out that he can’t do his one passion in life because of a disability he never knew he had, Also even though he’s colorblind he won’t stop trying to find a way to fulfill his dream.

Alex/Barry (Prisoners)

There’s a lot about this character that isn’t shown, but what I can kinda see by the slight hints I put here.

Stimming: Unknown (Maybe singing the song he sang when he walked the dog idk)

Traits: Semi-verbal, Doesn’t want to break the rules of his aunt, doesn’t like being touched, intense or no eye contact

Notes: though yes it might just be because of the amount of trauma he has been through I still believe he’s autistic, and since we see a lot less about his character besides him being tortured for the entire movie I’ve come up with all the signs I could see from what we got.

He just gave me a vibe okay! Now leave me alone lol.

Olive (Little Miss Sunshine)

Special interest: Beauty Pageants

Stimming: Screaming, Running/Dancing, Fidgeting with slide puzzles, Training

Traits: Takes things literally (but this could be just because she’s a child), imitates her idols/practices facial expressions, doesn’t fully care about others judging her, listens to the same song over and over again

Notes: Yeah yeah I know, she could just be a bubbly child that gets exited easily but the second I saw the way she acted I was like “AUTISTIC! That right there is an autistic girl!” And I mean that literally, I literally said that out loud when I watched the movie a few nights ago.

Connor (Detroit Become Human)

YES I KNOW HE’S AN ROBOT! But there’s something different from him and the rest of the Deviants.

Special interest: Completing his Mission (no longer his special interest after Deviating), Detective things

Stimming: Coin flipping/tricks, fixing his tie and the cuffs of his shirt

Traits: Monotone, takes things literally, would do anything to complete his mission/help the people he cares about,

Notes: I can’t be the only one who sees the difference between him and the other androids.

Here’s a thought I’ve had for a while:

Bella, Edward, and Renesmee are all autistic.

Please hear me out, I’ll explain for each one of them why I think this

Bella Swan

So, out of these three, Bella is the one that is mostly headcanoned as being autistic, but incase you haven’t seen that i’ll explain why

It’s commonly brought up that her mind “works different from others”

She prefers to be alone (unless it’s with Edward) and doesn’t feel like she fits in

She clearly has anxiety which is very common for people on the spectrum

Trouble understanding social cues (An example of this is not understanding when someone is flirting with her)

She has very large emotionally attachment to things

Unusual emotional reactions (example: not being scared when Edward confessed to being a vampire)

She kept re-reading the same book (Wuthering Heights) over and over. This seems like a special interest

There are many other reasons why but these are just the main ones!

Edward Cullen

He seems to have difficulty understanding social cues

The way he talks is differently from other people (and yes, I know he’s from a different time period, but so were the rest of the Cullens and they seem to talk the same as their peers)

It’s mentioned that because of his mind reading abilities, he’s never able to 100% block out the thoughts of those around him (besides Bella, Obviously) which reminded me a lot of overstimulation

Similar to Bella, before they met each other, he preferred to be alone

He was very clearly depressed which is a common autistic trait

Piano (and music in general) seems to be his special interest

(Also, I headcanon Edward as having ADHD, I can talk about that in a different post if y’all want)

Renesmee

This one is a bit more difficult to explain simply because we know so little about her

She has two autistic parents so she’s very likely to also be autistic

This might be a stretch but her only drinking blood seems like a safe food

The main reason I believe she’s autistic is because she prefers not to talk (and instead use her power). This very much seems like Non-verbal autistic coding

Kyoko Kirigiri- Ultimate Luckster- Mastermind (: Sometimes lesbians can be evil okay! was trained as a detective like everyone in her family and didn’t get the ultimate :) she’s definitely not mad about that :) her luck cycle depends on how far she plans things ahead. her good luck is when she’s spontaneous! She hates when ‘normal’ people are accepted by ultimates.

Makoto Naegi- Photographer (Mostly wildlife and nature photography, with Sayaka helping him for some animal photography (: trans and bi <3 One of sayaka’s birds nests in his hair like all the time)

Kiyotaka Ishimaru- Ultimate Swordsman (AUTISTIC ICON, has trained in kendo since he was a kid, then was essentially given away to the Fujisaki clan by his very stressed dad. Semiverbal, rarely speaks.)

Chihiro Fujisaki- Ultimate Yakuza (Taka is her bodyguard! His family is in debt to hers, the Fujisaki clan is the most powerful in Japan. trans icon, of course, dates Sayaka! Very direct, though she’s far more delicate and polite when talking to taka, her best friend)

Sakura Oogami- Ultimate Nurse (Works as an EMT- her clan still is in martial arts, so she’s still very buff, she assists in injuries at the family dojo. Autistic Icon)

Asahina Aoi- Ultimate Gamer (ULTIMATE ADHD. streams and has a ton of fun, will ramble while breaking records, demigirl who loves her girlfriend sakura :)

Mukuro Ikusaba- Ultimate Chef (Works best with ‘cheap’ food, and making them taste good. a byproduct of growing up on the streets with junko, and junko being bored of the same old food they dug out of the trash. now works closely with junko for her teams’ nutritional needs! autistic and sapphic.)

Junko Enoshima- Ultimate Team Manager (there are SO many sports she can never get bored, and the professional scene is always changing! prefers coaching womens’ teams, because being an ultimate brings them more publicity and usually higher pay :)

Mondo Oowada- Ultimate Prince (OH MY BOY. trans adhd icon. now the crown prince of Novoselic, with a reagent in his place until he comes of age. His service dog Chuck is a maltese and an absolute sweetheart. Chihiro takes him under her wing to teach leadership. also dates taka later OF COURSE, though they’re poly and I may add more ppl to their relationship later.)

Celestia Ludenburg- Ultimate Musician (specializes in violin, most strings, though she can play any instrument. grew up poor, dedicated herself to an instrument and persona to cope)

Byakuya Togami- Ultimate Musician (Yep. two musicians. two catty trans gay icons about to throw down. they HATE each other and grew up as rivals. specialize in classical, they literally tore a professional orchestra full of grown adults apart trying to make them side with who was the best musician. they’re so good that they’re matched, and Hope’s Peak accepts them as one student and combined ultimate. they room together. they fight. Literally if one of them gets expelled, the other does too, so they’re STUCK. eventually they become literally inseparable and insufferable together like the WORST siblings. I love them.)

Sayaka Maizono- Breeder (animal handler) (Specializes in birds!!!!!! has songbirds on her shoulders all the time. will give unsettling animal facts without realizing they’re unsettling. sends her songbirds to serenade chihiro when they start dating <3)

Yasuhiro Hagakure- Gymnast (you see this tall goof who acts like an older brother to everyone and wonder HOW he’s a gymnast. he’s completely different in competitions, though still lighthearted. becomes a big brother figure to mukuro and junko especially <3 also trans bc i say so.)

Leon Kuwata- Traditional Dancer (he just. kinda hates it. it takes SO much work and effort but he takes to it naturally. his cousin kanon is NOT like in canon, instead she’s helpful. he’d literally rather be doing anything else. doesn’t know how to do anything like... basic either. can’t cook. cant do his own laundry. everything was dedicated to traditional japanese dancing before he attended HPA.)

Toko Fukawa- Engineer (writes schematics and is very good at it. gets VERY upset when her plans go wrong. her notes are orderly and perfect. host for their system!)

Syo- Mechanic (a factive of genocider syo, NOT an actual killer. she’s a protector mainly, and also is more adept at hands on skills when it comes to fixing things, her hands are less shaky. Her notes are a disaster and she does it to spite Toko.)

Hifumi Yamada- (???) (reserve course) Protagonist! My BOY. HIFUMI IS GOOD OKAY. He’s autistic and loves anime and gaming! he’s not particularly ultimate-leveled at them, or anything else! Attending Hope’s Peak as a reserve course student! At one point he joins the student council as a reserve course representative even if he’s only a freshman :) He’s also a moderator in Hina’s livestream chat, under the username of JusticeHammer, fastest ban hammer this side of the internet. He's internet friends with hina and sakura, and doesn’t realize Oh We Go To the same SCHOOL until he bumps into them. and realizes hina doesnt know what he looks like. but sakura does. its hilarious. he’s aroace, and during the year they’re locked in HPA, is in a queer platonic partnership with Hina and Sakura, while they’re dating each other. it’s great.)

Goodbye Despair! (second game)

Peko Pekoyama- Lucky student (ohohoh. her luck relies on her conviction. if she has doubts her bad luck strikes HARD. trans!, was taken in by Fuyuhiko’s family when she was a baby, grew up as just another kid in the family. They all expected Fuyu to go off to HPA on his own and then BOOM acceptance letter)

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu- Programmer (He. gets so angry while coding. He has an array of rubber ducks to talk to and work through his coding issues with. trans of course. Very protective of Peko when people say she doesn’t have a ‘real’ ultimate. ADHD and Autistic)

Sonia Nevermind- Writer (Literary Girl) (Her family immigrated to Japan when she was young! She writes a lot of serial killer novels, murder mysteries and horror and all that! Trans and bi :)

Gundham Tanaka- Detective (YEAH my guy is a detective. still talks Like That. Trans and bi and he and Sonia were kinda-dating (t4t autistic power couple in the making) when things started happening. He spends some time with his cool older sister who he looks up to a LOT. He and Sonia talk through things together a lot, they both have those red string walls, one for murder cases, another for a fictional plot lmao.)

Mahiru Koizumi- Moral Compass (my GIRL. autistic. Her morals rely a lot on people taking responsibility and being reliable, and she ends up having to work through some biases she didn’t realize she had when she arrived at HPA. Is still protective of Hiyoko, though that protectiveness is spread a bit thinner to extend to the rest of the class.)

Hiyoko Saionji- Clairvoyant!!! (HI YES I COULD TALK ABOUT HER FOR DAYS. Has actual visions in dreams and when she suddenly faints, but doesn’t really realize they’re uhh Real Visions for a WHILE. uses her status as an ultimate clairvoyant to trick and bully kids when in school for a LONG time, though her homelife wasn’t great with her grandmother trying to find ways to make her visions more consistent. SHES ALSO 12 WHEN SHE JOINS THE 77TH CLASS. she’s just so advanced in academics and her ultimate is so interesting hope’s peak cant HELP but scout her early. she has SO many issues guys no one appreciates hiyoko enough, autistic gifted kid hiyoko my beloved.)

Akane Owari- Gambler (started gambling to help out her family and Got Good at it. is very very conscious of money and food like all the time. Runs the hope’s peak betting pools once she arrives. these ultimates bet on a lot of things. she ALWAYS wins. until she doesnt!!!)

Mikan Tsumiki- Martial Artist (ohhhh Mikan. Still anxious and clumsy (though not like THAT in canon) and literally no one looks at her and thinks Oh The ULTIMATE martial artist?? it isn’t until you see her in the ring that you understand. She started learning self defense as a kid because her (bad) parents essentially said she had to rely on and protect herself and no one else would help.)

Kazuichi Souda- Pop Idol (OH TRANS ICON? he’s nervous and paranoid about Everything still, though now it’s like. oh the entire world is always watching my every move this is Okay (: has the brightest neon album eras. he literally keeps up a like. weird chad persona when interacting with people because he’s masking how hard he’s constantly just internally screaming.)

Nagito Komaeda- Soldier (AHAHAH my mans got issues problems disorder he’s a messssss, this trans guy, this absolute gay. this boy leveled a city of thousands of people with his own hands and some bombs. Still has medical issues, but most of his like. treatments and medicine is hold hostage as long as he stays in line. believes the ends justify the means and anyone who dies to him is obviously weak, because look at him! he’s weak, but that doesn’t matter because he doesn’t have to be the strongest, he just has to be stronger than the weakest scum.)

Chiaki Nanami- Heir (OOF. Agender, uses any pronouns. Doesn’t really. enjoy being the heir. grew up with Byakuya in the same circles. she treats the economy and stock market and stuff like games. enjoys gaming but isn’t good at them. collects so many things. has halls full of collections. Her parents stopped controlling her once she was able to prove she had more money than them and could literally bankrupt them if she wanted.)

Hajime Hinata- Baseball Star (Chiaki’s best friend, his family was upper middle class until he hit it BIG as a baseball star. wants to do BIG things and wants to attend hope’s peak more than anything!! Doesn’t really think of baseball as his THING, just a means to an end! trans :)

Teruteru Hanamura- Biker Gang Leader (started with shaking down some jerks who didn’t pay their food and drink tabs at his mama’s restaurant. now he RUNS their tiny town. His siblings are essentially gang mascots, he works hard to keep them out of trouble (while bringing them to like. meetings where he ends up beating a dude almost to death. its fine). most of what he does it to get more money to keep the restaurant afloat and care for his mama with her health conditions.)

Nekomaru Nidai- Fashionista (the drama. the CHAOS. most people are like ohhh we can never understand this artistic genius when he’s literally just. vibing and has ADHD and a love for coffee. Works a lot on accessible clothing lines for disabled people! Also he and Kazuichi work together sometimes, Nekomaru is good at calming Kaz down and seeing like, the root of whatever problem and making it better. ALSO A TRANS ICON and just flaunts it.)

Imposter- In the hope’s peak days they are impersonating Ryota Mitarai, as a part of the 77th class. In the Killing Game they impersonate Mondo Oowada as the Ultimate Prince. They’re doin’ their best.

Ibuki Mioda- (???) (Izuru Kamakura) Protagonist! Gundham Tanaka’s older sister (though they’re in the same school year). Nonbinary and using just. an array of pronouns alongside she/her, and jokingly fights with gundham for neopronouns like MOM said it’s MY TURN on the rawrself pronouns. She attends the reserve course to stay at her brother’s side. She dresses loudly and acts even louder because !!! she wants to stand out!! in the middle of this drab reserve course hell!! but when things go down, she wants to be someone, to be worthy of being her amazing brother’s big sister. so she accepts some offers.

NON-KILLING GAME:

Ryota Mitarai- Ultimate Analyst (stays in his room. He’s terrified of the outside world but fascinated by it. watches hope’s peak academy through security feeds, picking up on little details. he just wants to understand things but never looks at the big picture.)

Chisa Yukizome- Ultimate Boxer (Homeroom teacher!! She’s working really hard and believes in everyone! Some are intimidated by talent, but she’s never hurt anyone outside of the ring! Dating Kyosuke)

Juzo Sakakura- Ultimate Student Council President (Has anger issues, though his work at reigning them in assisted in becoming an Ultimate. Was responsible for security and the Hope’s Peak student council. Dating Kyosuke)

Kyosuke Munakata- Ultimate Housekeeper (Meticulous, works himself to the BONE even if he’s good enough to not have to do that. Is working on establishing another Hope’s Peak! Dating Chisa and Jozu!!!)

Seiko Kimura- Ultimate Blacksmith (GIVE MY GIRL KNIVES!! She’s an anxious gal, always wearing a facemask that filters the air in her forge because she has some respiratory problems. she prefers making more decorative pieces like an artist, but sometimes can create utilitarian pieces or tools to fit specific needs. Still a doormat)

Ruruka Ando- Ultimate Pharmacist (She constantly asks Seiko for new tools for her developments in medicine, saying its all for the advancement of humanity, so Seiko denying any request is SELFISH, though she never thinks to make anything for seiko’s health issues. Dating Izayoi. Specializes in medicine for mental health. Not Doing Great :)

Sonosuke Izayoi- Ultimate Confectioner (He loves sweets. LOVES them. Creates things that look plain, ordinary. but taste so GOOD you CRY and maybe ascend for a little bit. sometimes Ando makes cool new drugs to put in the sweets, who knows! It’s a mystery! He always has like. a huge refrigerated case of fresh cakes, and constantly has a lollipop in his own specialty recipe in his mouth.)

“Hey Steve, when do we get to meet this girl you’re spending all your time with?” Tony teases the second Steve walks into the common room.

“What? No! I don’t spend all my time with her,” he tries to defend himself and Nat rolls her eyes.

“You’ve been gone every night this week and missed the last three movie nights in a row,” she states and he sighs.

“I’m sorry guys, I-”

“It’s not a bad thing Steve,” Clint cuts him off, “we’re glad you found somebody who makes you happy. We just want to know more about this girl who’s obviously really special to you.”

“I don’t know. She’s not great with big crowds or loud noises and you guys can be…a lot,” he says carefully. If you want to disclose your autism to his team he’ll support that, but he wants it to be your call.

“That’s pretty fair,” Tony says with a shrug, knowing hang outs with the team can get crazy, “at least tell us a little about her.”

“I can do that.” Steve’s smile is involuntary as he recalls the story of how you met.

Steve made it a point to try something from this century at least once a month. There is still a lot of adjusting he has to do. He is no way used to the new times so at least once every month he took some time and completed an item on his list. This month’s task is to read the hunger games. Peter said it was super important to his generation. Steve had a feeling he just wanted someone to talk to about the books, but the plotline sounded interesting enough to him. Plus he thought it was kind of adorable to see the kid talk about stuff he loved, so he walked into the book store he found online and started searching for the series.

After about 5 minutes he realized there were way too many options. The store was two stories and had a ton of different sections. He needed to get some help.

“Excuse me?” his voice startles you and you look up to see a tall man standing in front of you.

“Yes?” you ask, staring at his chest rather than his eyes and missing the confused expression he sends you before continuing.

“I’m looking for this book called the hunger games. My friend recommended it. Can you help me find it?” you nod and start walking towards the young adult section of the store.

“It’s technically a kids book so it’s over here,” you explain and he nods, grabbing the books off the shelf and smiling. “Is there anything else I can do?”

“Would you like to talk for a bit? I could always use some new friends,” he offers and you think about it, looking up at his face for a few seconds before looking away. He’s smiling and he doesn’t look mean. Something about him intrigues you so you nod, following him to sit at a table near him.

“So, how long have you worked here?” he asks and you laugh a bit.

“I don’t work here. I just really like this place,” you tell him and he winces.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your day,” he sounds sincere and you just shrug.

“It’s okay. Normally I’d be upset, but you’re really nice. I guess I don’t mind too much.”

“That was 8 months ago, and the rest is history I guess.” The entire team can’t help but share Steve’s smile.

“You should bring her around. I promise we won’t bite,” Bruce says and Steve hesitates for a moment.

“I’ll talk to her about it, but I make no promises.”

“What if they don’t like me?” You ask quietly, staring down at your wringing hands rather than Steve as you talk.

“You make me happy, that’s more than enough for them. I know our jobs make us seem scary, but they’re just people. They’re gonna love you,” at his promise you nod, pulling your hands apart to take one of his. You take a deep breath and play with his fingers as you step out of the elevator together, Steve calling out to his team, “hey guys, there’s someone I want you to meet.”

Within just a few moments the room is full of the remaining five avengers and you tighten your grip on Steve’s hand as you stare at their feet. If it hurts his hand he doesn’t say anything.

“You must be y/n. I’m Natasha,” Nat steps up first. She holds her hand out to shake but you just look up at her face for a moment and give her a small smile.

“Hi,” you say softly and she sends Steve a confused look.

“Y/n doesn’t really shake hands,” he explains before you cut him off.

“I have autism. I don’t like people touching me,” you explain before looking at Steve. After all these months you’re better with making eye contact with him, even if it is still brief. “You didn’t tell them?”

“I wanted that to be your decision,” he explains and you feel a new wave of nerves rushing over you.

“I’m sorry if this makes you think I’m weird,” you say quietly.

“We don’t think you’re weird, y/n. We might not understand, but we’re willing to learn what makes you most comfortable. Everyone has some quirks, and we’re not here to judge you for something you can’t control,” Clint says and you smile.

“I like them,” you tell Steve and he chuckles

“I knew you would.”

“So y/n, if you don’t mind me asking, you said you don’t like people touching you but…” Tony trails off, gesturing to the arm Steve has wrapped around your shoulders. You’ve all moved to the couches and have been talking for a while. You’ve mainly just listened while cuddling into Steve’s side.

“It’s different with people I know. I didn’t let Steve hug me for most of the first four months of our relationship. But now that I know him better I don’t mind as much. It helps me calm down sometimes,” you explain and Tony nods.

“That makes sense. Is there anything else we need to know? I don’t want to accidentally make you uncomfortable,” Natasha asks and you take a moment to think.

“I don’t like loud noises like yelling and stuff. Steve already said that I don’t like being touched, so there’s that too,” you say and Tony pipes up again.

“Better tell the kid to keep it down,” He says and you turn to Steve.

“Does he mean Peter?” you ask and Steve nods.

“He’s at school during the day but he hangs out here a lot. He’s harmless, just excitable,” he explains, “I think you’ll be okay. He isn’t really that bad.”

You take a moment to take in the situation and let yourself smile a bit. It’s a lot to handle, but you think this could be the start of a really good friendship with the people Steve considers family.

that's actually a pretty interesting question because the polycule is very culturally diverse. like of course we have simon who's jewish, but the rest is kind of in a weird place. i'm pretty sure shadowhunters don't have holidays at all, and since clary was raised by a shadowhunter and a former shadowhunter, i'm pretty sure she would have been raised without any either? like maybe she'd celebrate the gregorian new year because you know, they have to pretend to be mundane after all, but i think that and birthdays were probably pretty much it for her. oh and halloween i guess which is also not religious-affiliated, are there any other holidays in the states? i guess there's the 4th of july and thanksgiving but both celebrate imperialism/colonialism and i don't want to write about that so i'm gonna pretend there aren't. plus i doubt shadowhunters celebrated those either

so ok we have izzy and clary with no holidays, we don't know whether or not maia is culturally christian and i don't wanna just say "yes" by default... and then there's meliorn whose holidays and traditions will be typical to seelie culture, which are gonna be... unique to them obviously. we don't know how they are celebrated, how long they last, what is the milestone, how or even IF they count time - like maybe they go by when a specific flower blooms and that only happens every 10 gregorian years or some shit. so that's a question mark i guess

and there's also the fact that the seelie realm is very politically closed which. i like to think changes once they get rid of the old queen! but it's still a slow process to just allow other people there. then again izzy was a shadowhunter and she used to hop by so it's probably not a huge deal for meliorn to bring their partners and metamours to seelie celebrations? or at least to the ones that aren't Super Sacred or anything. so like parties and dances and stuff like that? yeah. which i guess brings me back to the other "meta" i wrote about seelie dances (link) and what it would be like for the rest of the polycule to participate in those and shit

then... well obviously there's the gregorian new year which we have obviously just gone through (well, we had when i started answering this ask. it's march now so rip. update it's april now. i'm so sorry anon) so like! i think it was always kind of hell for both raphael and maia, autistic icons, because of all the explosion sounds that just made them feel really upset and feel really stupid for it. with raphael i think it was more bearable when he had rosa because she would spend the day with him and hug him and let him squeeze the stress out you know dauhdasuihda also she was always the one he felt the most comfortable stimming in front of. and then after he lost her it only got worse because on top of the fireworks there was the clear absence of rosa that he just FELT everywhere. you know?

and with maia there's the added trouble of her being AMAB and what with being raised to "black men" standarts of masculinity (to be clear, as in: due to racism black men are expected to be even more macho than white men, ESPECIALLY by nonblack ppl; not as in wow black ppl are so backwards or whatever. white ppl invented gender norms anyway so lmao), she was definitely shamed a lot for being so distressed by the fireworks when she was little methinks. we love that combination of transphobia, racism and ableism! so it was just hard and filled with bad memories. and then once she ran away from home it got marginally better without the constant telling her to "man up" and shit like that, but it still came with the added memories you know

and also with them (plus simon) being vampires/werewolves the hearing gets even more sensitive so that's... fun. meliorn realizes it stresses them out and makes up a special kind of spell that muffles their hearing of background noise, so they can feel more comfortable and for the first time there is not that added stress that comes with the new years and it feels so nice?? they even try watching the fireworks but it's kinda like eh, not that great, especially because even looking at them brings out memories you know doahdsaoh so instead meliorn shows them some magic and it's so much prettier with all the glowing lights and stuff, you know?

maybe after that the polycule starts spending the new years in the seelie realm instead, that'd be cute, just like. enjoying that pretty place with all the lights and shit. i think they would all prepare some kind of light show some way or another like using magic and witchlights and whatnot. that'd be cute

as for other holidays! i think their holiday traditions would start with simon's first yom kippur after he was able to eat solid foods again (shut up a potion WILL be created and i don't accept any other option). before that, with simon being unable to eat, he was also obviously unable to fast. he wouldn't feed during yom kippur but it's not like vampires need to drink blood every day so it's not really the same thing. and it felt particularly lonely that, besides being away from his family and community, he also couldn't fast

i mean obviously simon isn't the only jewish vampire in the world, or jewish downworlder for that matter, so i'm sure he makes jewish friends he would at least get together and pray with for yom kippur, and that's what matters the most, really, but being unable to fast when he wants to and also not being able to participate in the break-fast meal just. sucks djdnudhsus

and then he's able to eat and he can do all that again! but it's also kind of emotionally charged for all of the vampires to fast for the first time when for so long they associated not eating with feeling unhuman, you feel? so like it kind of hits all of them hard

so the polycule decides to make him a little surprise and cooks the break-fast meal for them. clary probably knows what simon and his family used to eat after yom kippur so they try to recreate that for him? and maia and raphael are lowkey nervous about it because they had never made stuff like noodle kugel before and while they could at least try it (yay potion!) they have no idea if it's tasting like it should, ya know what i mean? and it's kind of sweet that they are so worried about making this the best possible experience for simon and the closest to home it can get. and simon is super emotional about getting to eat that stuff for the first time, as well as the other vampires, so you know. it's very emotional all around. but in a good way? and i think after that it kind of becomes a tradition that they make him the break-fast meal after yom kippur too

and then the next years they lowkey fuss over him for the last meal before the fast too, which i'm not sure is something simon would do with other people so they would go ham, dude, particularly raphael because he is a worrier first and foremost. so catch his ass all lovingly planning a meal he can make with zero (0) salt whatsoever so simon doesn't get too thirsty during the fast for MONTHS, planning so he gets the most amount of sustenance, lots of fiber, etc., and simon is like "you know i don't even have to eat, right?" but rapha is just all "you know food still matters" and simon doesn't say anything because it does. it matters a lot

and raphael is all sweetly nervous because like... it is a simple meal, that is the point, but he still wants simon to enjoy it and simon can't stop smiling through the whole thing. raphael and the others also eat it with him too in solidarity before simon goes to the synagogue with his community and it's like a sweet send off you know?

also this is not exactly a celebration or a tradition for that matter but since YK is the day of forgiveness i like to think that eventually simon asks for raphael's forgiveness on YK for the whole rosa thing, and although that isn't religious for raphael, raphael asking for his forgiveness for how everything went down, too. and it's just a sweet moment where they leave this whole story behind and look for a better future - i imagine this happening before they get together, so again, it doesn't really count as an answer to your question, but i just thought i'd include it because i find it sweet

then after that there is sukkot and i just really loove the idea of them helping him build the sukkah (for those who don't know, the sukkah is a hut covered with vegetation under the open sky, where jewish ppl live in for the duration of the sukkot). i know that they could just buy a certified one but where is the fun in that when we could have shenanigans? also i think that that would have been part of simon's personal/family traditions because i bet him and becca loved to build the sukkah for their family. so like on that spirit it is a little sad that they can't help each other with that anymore since simon can't be seen by the rest of his family, but of course as soon as he mentions it and how fun it used to be the whole polycule is Immediately On Board. let's help simon build his sukkah!

first of all other than simon none of them have ever built a sukkah before and simon usually followed becca's lead tbh, also he's just not great to Lead And Control people in general, and the polycule is already messy as all fuck. so it's a disaster, especially with raphael and simon's superspeed and strength thrown into the mix, and meliorn's almost impossible to hold back mischievous nature. izzy is lowkey responsible for keeping them in check and okay now that i think about it clary might have helped simon's family build it before, especially when she was a kid because kids just love that shit, but i don't know if she would remember the steps tbh (read: she wouldn't remember the steps) so yeah all in all the sukkah falls down more often than not and they might have to replace a few materials when simon and raphael accidentally snap their bamboo poles in half. rip

meliorn is probably all like "you are all weak and pathetic, i am a seelie, i can literally control living things. simon needs a vegetable covering? watch me get all the nearby trees to form a beautiful roof" and simon is like "actually the sechach cannot be alive" and meliorn slowly dies because they have no power over dead nature. also simon forbids magic usage in general because this needs to be an authentic building experience for him, so meliorn is left as the most useless one since they only have experience building these things using magic and the help of the trees or whatever

also i bet they would love to go EXTREMELY hard on the lights and decorations. i know that hassidic and to my understanding general orthodox jewish communities don't decorate the sukkah but i don't hc simon as part of those communities so i think he would want to decorate the sukkah. like even if it isn't fully covered in decorations, he would want what few he has to be well done, you know what i mean? like he would want to make the holiday posters himself (i dont know if it would be appropriate for clary to help make these but if it would, she totally would and i like the idea of simon giving her a very specific prompt to make the posters and clary doing it for him, you know? and maybe them all helping paint it with colorful themes), making decorations, and okay, at the very least fairy lightning? please? come on. it's another whole ass dramatic experience to get electricity in there so that's fun for sure, but i think meliorn and maia in particular would be all over the idea of making a pretty lightning system, and simon is definitely not gonna complain because he loves pretty things and the idea sounds rad. raphael smiles fondly through it all and basically saves the day by being the only one with organizational skills who is actually able to help them make a working plan for the sukkah

(catch these idiots making a blueprint. TRY and tell me they wouldn't)

(every year they make a new blueprint and the sukkah has different designs and proportions - always following the requirements like having four at least 32 inches tall walls, of course - and they start completely anew. the sechach must always be new but not the general structure, but they redo the structure anyway because again, it's fun)

and then of course they have meals together in the sukkah for the duration of sukkot and just idk i really dig the idea of the lot of them holding trays of food wearing oven mitts as they get inside and turn on the lights and it feels really nice and sweet you know? and then of course promptly turns kind of messy because it's their way but that's what they want. also, at least once a year they manage to sneak becca in for a meal with simon in the sukkah and they are just both so happy and aaaaa :')

and that's how "kidnapping" becca so she can see simon and his sukkah becomes another tradition lmao. they do it in the most dramatic full of flair way they possibly can while still not being found out and then promptly tell simon all about it in the most dramatic and exaggerated retelling during the meal, which always makes both simon and becca laugh (reality: becca just told her parents she would be off for a few hours to do some school thing or something and then they picked her up and she got a superspeed piggyback ride so she and simon wouldn't miss a minute. their story: "it all began with a carefully planted lie,")

there's also pesach which many (reform) jewish friends of mine have told me they like to do with goyim because the whole point of that holiday is to welcome strangers and share jewish history, so i think simon would like to do that as well. so yeah i think simon would enjoy having them with him during the Pesach Seder - again i think simon would want to be with his other jewish friends but it would be fun because they all could bring their pet goyim that they know would be respectful and nice to have around, run the Seder, and celebrate with them. also for their first one i think simon would have gotten excited about explaining the order/15 steps to them, so like cue lots of fond looks as simon tells them everything about it, how this is the first time he'll be able to have the feast, the four cups of wine, and how he's excited even to have the bitter herbs again. and then over the years they all become pretty much used to the 15 steps, they come naturally, they know what to expect, they already know the story of the Exodus after retelling it every year, and it's nice both when it's new and he gets to share and when it starts to be something in their element because it became their tradition and they want to be there with simon for the holidays, you know what i mean?

then there's purim!!!!!!!! god they would sure have so much fun on purim it gets me really excited to think about. purim might be the one that they get to participate the most in from what i've seen, and i have lots of thoughts about it, like:

first of all, making hamantaschen!! they each make a batch with a different stuffing and it's lowkey a competition and lowkey a surprise and as always with cooking together it is very fun and homey. and also kind of silly as they usually are, but purim is a holiday that is kind of supposed to be silly and for ppl to let go so it matches that mood, you know what i mean? like they're all covered in flour and "stop trying to LOOK at what i'm making!" and blind testing and stuff

then, food gifts! so from what i've seen it is preferable that the food gifts jewish ppl send each other on purim are sent by a third party, which is usually a kid, but they don't know many kids and i really like the idea of the polycule serving as simon's messengers for the day lmao. going everywhere round the shadow world and beyond ("hey mel since you can portal i have this friend in argentina-") and then bringing him the other gifts people send simon in return :)

dressing up in costumes! there is absolutely no way simon doesn't dress up for purim and the whole polycule is absolutely dragged into it, including an absolutely reluctant raphael. it quickly becomes a tradition tho that they change costumes every year and try to make them funnier and more outrageous (as you do) as time goes by. trust the polycule to turn pretty much everything into a competition. and simon always laughs with so much glee and joy when he gets to see what everyone dresses up as so really, how could they say no?

(maia "wins", like, every year. she is totally huge on costumes and her and simon are very attuned in that sense, so, you know. catch her dressing up as memes and just generally making the most creative costumes. she may or may not think them months and months ahead of time)

maybe they hold purim meals with particularly themed costumes every once in a while when they want to spice it up, but i think generally it's more of a freestyle thing

simon also loves reading the purim torah tbh, it's just fun. and then of course there's the megillah and booing when haman's name is mentioned. they are all banned from using graggers because half of them have superstrength and the other half doesn't technically have superstrength but is still super strong and they destroyed the poor thing on accident after the first ten seconds when they tried

food yay! and the very long meal. they usually get pretty drunk, tbh, at least the ones that can. and just generally i think it's one of their favorite celebrations to do together and more often than not ends in them all curled up together in the couch so u know, that's sweet uwu

and then of course rosh hashanah, which is the holiest joyous day in jewish tradition, so of course it's a huge deal for them all. and i just think they would all be super excited about making the evening (especially the meal ofc) the most incredible for simon it could possibly be. again i think simon would want to spend it with his downworlder jewish friends and community, and they probably have their own synagogue they go to together and everything, so obviously they are all involved in making preparations for rosh hashanah, but i like to think the polcyule and simon's friends' pet goyim would help with what they can as well (provided it's not something that should be done by a jewish person like baking the challah; but if not with cooking, they would at least want to help with stuff like decorations and the like. honestly i imagine all of simon's partners sitting together very seriously with a paper in front of them writing down all the stuff they can do to help with rosh hashanah preparations and everything. especially once they learn that like being happy/joyous is a mitzvah so they're just like "we want to make u as happy as possible then :)" and it's sweet and simon may or may not tear up a little)

and then we have other holidays that aren't associated with religion like halloween, which was kind of implied to be the official downworld holiday, so i'm pretty sure they go big on that too. not dressing up because again, one day where they can all afford to be themselves, but definitely meeting up at the hunter's moon, getting spectacularly drunk, roasting the mundane's costumes, and then once they get back to whichever of them's homes, watching some shitty movies and throwing stuff at the screen together

i'm on the fence about día de muertos. i know it's not exactly a sad holiday but i feel like it is for raphael because it kind of represents everything he's lost - his culture and his family, and he can't even go to the parade during the day, you know, although i'm not sure that would have been his thing, but i do think he would have loved to watch the arrival of the monarchs when he was a kid but he'd have to be in méxico for that. and particularly after he lost rosa i just feel like it would have been so emotionally charged for him, you know? he would definitely make her an altar every year and it would be just... big and well thought-out and something really emotional and important for him, welcoming his little sister back the best he can. and i feel like that's something he'd want to do alone because my boy loves to punish himself

but there are little things i think they would have wanted to do with him, and that they might push a little to be able to, like being with him while he eats by the altar and hearing him tell stories about rosita. and i think they would help him "undo" (?) the altar once día de muertos is over, which is always extra emotional for him and aaa. and then the next day they kind of just get to be with him and cuddle a little bit as he recovers emotionally, you know?

also it has just occured to me that raphael is christian shit fuck fart bitch cock. so okay i guess that puts xmas and easter somewhat on the map? again mostly for food. us latinos celebrate xmas on the eve, not on xmas day, and raphael is totally the insufferable xmas meal obsessed bitch who's on the kitchen all day and refuses to let anyone help (he can't pull that particular stunt for the meals they have for simon's holidays obviously but he can on xmas soo). but it's worth it because it is always a great one. and he also gives a lot of thought into getting everyone presents so that is sweet and it earns him lots of kisses on the cheek and stuff. and that's pretty much it for latino xmas, we don't really do stuff i'm still not convinced gringos haven't made up like the socks and the eggnog and xmas music (????) so it's more lowkey. and i think raphael would keep the more religious aspects of it to the stuff he does at church (again, there are downworlder religious communities idk what to tell u) and for the nursery home. which is not to say that like... oh wow xmas is totally not a xtian holiday! or whatever, just that the version the polycule does is more lowkey on the religious aspects and the things they do together on that day are more about being together with raphael on a day that matters to him, you know, especially since again, he is the only xtian and that's gonna be a sensitive thing for simon especially

and i think for easter it is mostly something they do to shower maia in sweets lmao. again she misses chocolate and i'm sure they spend a lot of their time trying to figure out how to get around that, either be by like trying to make special chocolate that doesn't make her sick or sweets that really really resemble chocolate or that are so good she doesn't even mind that she can't eat chocolate anymore. so that's their tradition for easter (and raphael goes to church ofc)

oh yeah and i forgot valentine's day! i have this funny little idea just for the shits where they have this little thing where they setup one-on-one dates for all the parts that are actually together and each of them lasts, like, 10 minutes (poor maia who dates everyone is just running around town) and it's more about the fun of running around from one day to the other like this is a bad romcom where some bastard is trying to juggle having two (monog) girlfriends at once. but then they actually get all together at the end of the day and trade presents and funny cards both among their dates and metamours ("roses are red, violets are blue, you're my girlfriend's girlfriend, and i love you platonically"). usually ending up with them drunk and debating how exactly they got to this overly complicated arrangement and trying to figure out the best way to explain this to an outsider and trying to make, like, fluxograms that explain all of their different relationships visually and they all look so messy it just leaves them more confused lmao. so yeah it's fun

The Old Guard BAU AU

First and foremost, I would like to clarify that so long as they have US citizenship and have renounced citizenship to any other country, they are allowed to be special agents in the FBI.

Obviously, Andy is the unit chief. As the oldest I could see someone putting her as the senior agent but none of the Guard - including Andy - give me the same vibes as Gideon or Rossi so yeah. She’s the unit chief that is very professional, kind of intimidating but is soft off the clock, and exclusively wears dark, neutral coloured suits that are barely indistinguishable from each other. She worked with and dated Quyhn when she was still working in a field office but they broke up when Andy moved back to Quantico to join the BAU. She later married and divorced Achilles before getting back together with Quyhn after Quyhn joined the team. And yes, I’m also giving her Hotch’s parenting storyline because a) BAMF, career driven women can still have and want children and b) her being on mat-leave is a nice, believable plot-reason for her having been gone for a year before Nile joins.

Nicky is the communications liaison. Between the fact he canonically used to be a priest and is referred to as him having kindness live inside him, I very easily see him being the one sitting with the grieving families and handling the public. Even if it’s not believable I have decided that he was so BAMF at his firearm training that after he completed his course at the FBI Academy they sent him to train as a sniper. Also, I have latched onto the autistic!Nicky headcanons - only in this au he’s properly diagnosed and acknowledged to be autistic (unlike Reid in the show). He is the best one to handle emotionally sensitive situations with victims and witnesses.

Booker is the technical analyst but he comes out into the field more than Garcia does in the show, because before he joined the FBI he worked for a city bomb squad so he not only has field training but in addition to being their tech expert he’s also their bomb expert. Like Garcia he got the FBI job by being very good at hacking but breaking laws with his skills. While he’s not as joyful as Garcia (obviously), he does platonically flirt with Joe, because they’re BFFs and when they initially met it was a week before Booker started at the BAU and Joe had asked Booker to pretend to be his boyfriend to get a girl at a bar to stop flirting with him.

Joe’s role on the team is based off of Morgan, with alterations. He's the one that teaches hand-to-hand at Quantico and will soon be scouted to take on leadership positions at various field offices. He also is the best to handle interrogations and negotiations because he could talk the pope into becoming an atheist. His platonic flirting with the straight Booker got more intense to distract from his genuine flirting with Nicky. Has an older brother relationship with Nile, where they bond over their art hobbies and he’s equally likely to give heartfelt advice or start a prank war. Chances are if someone on the team is having a mental or emotional crisis, they go to Joe.

Nile is the baby genius, the protege, the youngest. She graduated hella early and has many degrees. While she has a ton of knowledge about many different subjects, her youth and newness to the team means that she has the most to learn, but even so, her newness means that intensity and horror that comes to the job hasn’t had it’s chance to affect her as much yet. This brings a surprising breath of fresh air the rest of the team didn’t know they needed (particularly Andy). Gideon’s the one that brings her on the team and Andy is initially against it but Nile quickly impresses her and gets her to warm up.

Copley is the section chief who is desperately trying to keep control of them all but their team’s motto is basically Fuck The Rules and he fails miserably. He’s promoted to section chief shortly after Nile joins.

I haven’t quite figured out exactly what I want for Lykon and Quyhn. I know I’m basing Quyhn’s backstory on Prentiss’s and that she worked with and dated Andy before separating and reconnecting later on when Quyhn joins that team. I also know I want the team line up to be the same as the movie when Nile joins so I have a vague notion of Lykon dying on the job and Andy just being so traumatized by it that either she’s slow to get a replacement, they’re all hella picky about the replacement so no one new lasts long, or some combination of both.

Senior agents will still be Gideon/Rossi with their show plots because as I said, no one on the team really gives me the correct vibe for senior agent and honestly I just love their two characters.

Okay yes!So. Basically:Throughout the play, Evan shows many symptoms of autism (specifically Asperger’s.) The level of those symptoms varies by actor but there is evidence in just the script that backs my point up.

First, obviously, there’s his social anxiety. Now, of course, social anxiety can be its own thing, but it often goes hand-in-hand with autism, because people on the spectrum have trouble knowing how to behave in a socially acceptable way and often face criticism and backlash for things they didn’t realize were issues.

Then, there’s another big one: his fixation on trees. He brings them up almost constantly, sometimes at points where there’s no obvious reason to bring them up. He writes himself talking about them, unprompted, in Sincerely Me, with the assumption that looking at cool pictures of trees will help someone feel better. And he probably does this a lot in the fake emails we don’t see, considering that Alana becomes convinced that Connor is obsessed with trees. Jared uses it to make a point to Evan about how much he’s pushed Connor out of the narrative. (”If there’s one thing about Connor, the guy loved trees. No, wait. You love trees.”) This is exactly how a lot of autistic people treat their special interests. Wanting to talk about them all the time, changing the subject to turn an unrelated conversation into one about those special interests, becoming an “expert” on them and assuming that other people will get excited about them, too.

Now, with those two things out of the way, there’s the slightly more subtextual stuff.Evan is very black-and-white in the way he thinks about things. And he takes a lot at face value. When Jared jokes that he broke his arm by jerking off too much, he reacts as if people will believe that he did, even though it’s obviously a joke. He believes Jared and Alana’s very thin facades, and that leads to him falling out with both of them, because he assumes that Jared won’t care if he cuts him out and that Alana isn’t emotionally invested in the Connor Project. He believes Heidi thinks he’s broken because she put him on meds (which, if he’s misdiagnosed and on the spectrum, probably don’t work anyway, but more on that later) and decides that she sees him as a burden. He thinks she won’t mind that he’s at the Murphys’ house instead of at Jared’s because he’s out either way, so why does it matter where he is? He sees all the bad parts of his mom, but all the good parts of the Murphys, not noticing their better-concealed but pretty major problems. He thinks that because they dote on him and don’t push him to get help that they like him more than his mom does. They show more obvious, outward signs of affection, and that is very clear. No interpretation needed. Heidi is trying her best and definitely loves him, but to an autistic kid, that’s a lot harder to see.

He misunderstands people’s intentions all the time, like with Alana and Jared, with his assumption that Connor took the note in order to bully him with it, thinking that Zoe was breaking up with him when she came over, etc.

He doesn’t connect the dots with social expectations. He’s taken aback at the idea that he’d be expected to give a speech at the kickoff event for the Connor Project, even though it should be obvious. He doesn’t initially realize that the Murphys are going to want to see him again after that first dinner, and that they’ll want to see the supposed “emails.” (And he fails to notice the pretty gay implications of his story until Jared points it out, after which he goes noticeably far to try to shake that idea off.) And that lack of social awareness leads to him doing things he shouldn’t. He gets pulled into the lie and lets it spiral out of control, unaware of how wrong it is and how he’s making it worse. He brushes Jared and Heidi off and replaces them, then is taken aback when they’re upset about it. He kisses Zoe without realizing how wildly inappropriate it is.

He tends to talk too much, going off on tangents to try to clarify what he’s saying even if clarification isn’t needed. (”I love jazz. Well, not all jazz, but definitely like, jazz-band-jazz, that’s so weird, I’m sorry.” “Well, sometimes. If he brought it up. I never brought it up. Obviously. Why would I have brought it up?”)

He seems to have sensory issues, too. A lot of his worst decisions are made in a desperate attempt to make the people around him stop yelling. That was what caused him to not tell the truth about the note in the first place. He’s also always very aware of how sweaty his hands are, and he often stops to just touch and feel things to ground himself. A lot of actors have him often messing with his clothes, especially his collar, as if he’s bothered by how it’s brushing against his skin.

He has trouble in social situations where he doesn’t have a general planned idea of what to say. He always starts his description of breaking his arm with “I fell out of a tree, actually…” and clearly has the way he’ll tell the story clearly planned out in his head. His interactions with his mom generally seem kind of wooden and practiced. When forced into situations with the Murphys that he doesn’t have a script for, he gets panicked and escalates things. He has a panic attack when he drops his notecards. He’s also very repetitive and clings onto things he’s used to and comfortable with. He repeats the lie in the same way so many times that Alana gets annoyed with him, saying something like “Yes, I know the story, Evan. We’ve all heard the story. You’re like a broken freaking record about it.” Zoe has to ask him to stop talking about the Connor Project. Also, based on the book, he sticks very closely to a routine. He has the same lunch every single day (and sits in the same spot, I believe.) He describes his letter-writing process in a very step-by-step, planned out, repetitive way. There are probably more examples but I haven’t read the book in a while and I think I’ve made my point.

Also, a lot of this is down to acting choices, but most actors I’ve seen play Evan with a lot of “tics” and fidgeting, ie. stimming, and a tendency to avoid eye contact. Some of them give him issues with volume control. At one point my brother noticed that Michael Lee Brown even went for some subtle echolalia. He also sometimes squeaks a lot or makes other noises and gestures that seem to have no clear purpose.

What really seals the deal for me is the whole medication/feeling broken thing. It was almost definitely not Steven Levenson’s intent but hey, death of the author. I interpret the text, not the intention. A major criticism of the show is that Evan goes off his meds and is totally fine afterwards. That is not a good message to send and seems poorly thought out for a show that seems to have thought of a lot. But, if he was misdiagnosed with an anxiety disorder, depression, etc, medication wouldn’t do what it was supposed to. It obviously wouldn’t make him less autistic, and could actually make him feel worse because they’re supposed to “fix” him and aren’t doing that. Autism isn’t a treatable thing, especially not with pills. Maybe the meds alleviated the anxiety, but his social struggles didn’t go away. And that convinces him that there is something inherently wrong, or broken about him. (”I’d rather pretend I’m something better than these broken parts / Pretend I’m something other than this mess that I am.”) He’s being treated for the wrong disorder, so of course it’s not working. Of course stopping them doesn’t really make a difference. If the causes of his anxiety were lessened, it could be possible that by the time he stopped, they were doing nothing at all for him, anyway.

Writing affirmation letters and taking anxiety medication doesn’t take away sensory issues or difficulty with social cues. It doesn’t stop special interests from being the only thing you want to talk about. It doesn’t stop the desperate desire to fit in and no idea how to. And in Evan’s specific case, it didn’t stop him from being constantly berated by his overly honest only friend over things he didn’t realize were socially unacceptable. It didn’t stop his mom from acting like he wasn’t trying. It didn’t stop the rest of the school from ostracizing him.

That’s what made him cling onto the Murphys. They made him feel like he wasn’t broken. Zoe treated his struggles and quirks like they were endearing instead of annoying. Larry and Cynthia never acted like he was different and encouraged him to go out of his comfort zone, but not to the point that it felt like they were pushing. They treated him the way they treated anyone else. And that was all he wanted.

I love this headcanon so much and it pains me that there's so little content for it

There are two reasons he eats in the classroom instead of the cafeteria during lunch:

Have you been wondering how good the new power rangers movie is?

Are you worried about the portrayal of an autistic ranger?

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

TL;DR - It’s great, go see it!

As always, the script is under the cut.

So, you guys know that I’m a giant nerd, right?

-Intro-

Okay, so, it’s up for debate whether Power Rangers was my first special interest, or Yu-Gi-Oh, but what is not up for debate is that I have seen every episode multiple times and it’s cheesy and I love it.

Apart from Turbo. Fuck Turbo.

So, the film!

I loved it. It was exactly what I expected going in and it didn’t suck!

I mean, Kimberly’s arc was a little - meh. Like, I’m going to have to spoil things for the review, but I’ll try to keep any big reveals from the last third of the film or so to myself. So, yeah, Kimberly has a whole thing where she’s being bullied, and then you find out that she did something pretty awful and isn’t entirely undeserving of the hate. And Kimberly accepts this and grows… But the film sometimes forgets that the “bullies”, while not being mature about it, are actually reacting to a pretty horrible - and, like, probably illegal? I feel like it’s super illegal, depending on the age of the characters - thing that Kimberly did, and so it can undermine her attempts to be a better person by having her make /really/ unwarranted potshots. Like, not because she’s just been hurt by them and is reacting to an immediate thing. I mean, - minor spoiler - her smugly laughing at them running in terror while she’s safely in her armour and zord during the final battle.

But it was really good other than that and I’m just really annoyed by that one flaw because the rest was so good. Bryan Cranston kills it as Zordon - and Zordon actually has his own flaws and arc and stuff. Alpha Five didn’t piss me off, which would have been easy to do. All of the rangers had, like, personality and complex motivations and were actually diverse.

I loved it. Except for the Kimberly thing.

And also the titty armour.

WHY did the armour have tits?

Anyway, it’s 4.5 stars as a film on its own, and that’s not why you come to me for these reviews.

Soooo. They made the blue ranger autistic.

I was very excited about this, but also super cautious. Like, I wanted it to be good, but I knew that if it wasn’t, it could RUIN the film for me.

So, was it any good? Let’s find out.

Clarity of autism

5 Stars

Yup. It’s stated in the film. Billy is talking to Jason and tells him that he’s “on the spectrum”. So, yup! Five stars for that!

Stereotype or person

5 Stars

Guys, guys, guys, guys, guys.

He’s also black.

Black autistic ranger.

And, yes, he does fulfill the autistic genius stereotype, but one of his defining characteristics in the film is that he cares about his mother and his friends, and he also doesn’t appear to be from a middle class family? Though, no one does, because Angel Grove appears to be a dying pit/fishing town, but whatever. He certainly isn’t Sheldon Cooper, so five stars.

Accurate autism

4.5 Stars

Okay, I’ve taken half a star off because the opening is a little…

Alright, so, when you’re writing something - especially with an ensemble cast - you’ve got to relay their personality to the reader/viewer asap. Which usually means that their first couple of scenes will be there to deliberately show parts of their personality.

A character is a good person, so they save a cat.

With autistic characters, this can mean scenes where they display as many autistic traits as possible, as quickly as possible.

And in Billy’s case, this was made worse by one of his most defining characteristics beyond his autism being his loyalty to his friends, since he isn’t friends with the others at the start of the film.

So, Billy’s first few scenes are pretty much him going through an autism checklist. (Get out autism bat and hit on each beat.)

Is he fussy about keeping his things organised? Check.

Does he info-dump? Check.

Does he misread humour? Check.

This mellows once the plot starts actually happening and we get introduced to the other rangers. The film is now sure that we get that Billy is AUTISTIC and it stops beating you over the head with it.

Also, the numbers thing. Billy does that Hollywood shorthand for autism where he recites numbers super precisely. In this case, the number of days/minutes since his father died.

Though, when specifically talking about the amount of time since someone has left, that’s also Hollywood shorthand for someone really being affected by someone leaving and I just can’t make up my mind as to which one they were going for.

Anyway, it’s only worth knocking off half a star, because Billy is super accurate otherwise. Once the film mellows out on the autism bat, it was all super believable and it didn’t fall into any of the usual pitfalls. Billy obviously cares about his mother and the other rangers.

In fact, he cares so much that he’s the first one to activate his armour. They do the whole “the armour is tied to friendship” thing.

Billy feels like a complete character, with motivations and wants beyond “being autistic”.

Storylines

5 stars.

Billy’s storyline is the same as the rest of the rangers’. Stopping Rita.

There’s no cure storyline, there’s no special autism-related storyline for Billy…

His storylines are influenced by his autism, sure, and they should be, but it’s not the be all and end all of his character or plot.

He needs to get his ranger powers working so that he and the others can protect the Zeo crystal from Rita and Goldar.

So, 5 stars, Power Rangers.

Respect

5 stars.

Billy is treated with the same respect as any of the other rangers, both by the narrative and by the other characters. The only person who makes any issue over his autistic traits is clearly painted as a bully.

Whenever the film goes for autism-related humour, it’s usually making fun of others for underestimating Billy, or misreading him, not the other way around. Or it’s Billy doing something that would be humourous regardless, but in a slightly autistic way, which is more than fine by me.

So, that’s all of the review categories which brings Power Rangers to a 5 star rating overall.

Holy shit. We’ve got another hall of famer, and this time it’s not a YA book written by an autistic author.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love YA books, but holy shit.

This is an actual blockbuster movie.

An actual blockbuster movie that did well at the box office and it probably going to get sequels.

Guys, there’s an autistic power ranger in a blockbuster movie and he’s awesome.
