a/n: i bring you my first bucky oneshot! dear evan hansen is one of my favorite musicals in the entire world, and “if i could tell her” is the sweetest song. i thought it would fit well with this plot i came up with and i really enjoyed writing this, so if y’all wanna read more musical inspired fics just let me know (even though i’ll probably still do it anyway). anywaaaaays, enjoy as always, and i hope you guys have a great day <3

He thought you were awesome

He thought I was awesome? My brother?

Definitely!

You sat in the compound with Nat in silence. Grieving over Chinese food together had become a norm over the past five years. Ever since the snap, losing your teammates and half of the universe had taken a toll on your friendship. You two worked in tandem together still, but there was always that tension in the air, the elephant in the room. Neither of you addressed the “blip” unless you were on a call with the remaining heroes. Five years later, and you two still have trouble speaking about it.

Quiet footsteps approached letting you know that Steve had arrived. You looked up, and there was your blue-eyed friend, leaning against the doorway, lips turned up in a small smile.

“Chinese food again?” He walked over and sat next to Natasha to grab a plate. “Everytime I come over here you two are sitting at the table eating Chinese takeout without speaking to each other. Natasha, get your feet off the table.”

Both of you smiled at this. “Okay, dad.” She snarkily responded. Those were the first words she had said all day. Of course Steve could get her to talk. Whenever he came to visit, he was always the one to break the quiet. To get you to smile. Three of you sat and chatted a bit about your days, until there was nothing left to say. Silence heavy in the air, Natasha set her plate down on the table. “I’m going to my room to work on some stuff. I’ll be gone for a bit.” She put her hand on your shoulder and left.

“We’re both aware that that’s code for her going to track Barton down, right?” You sighed heavily and nodded. He knew that she was spending any free time she had trying to find her best friend, but whenever she did find him, she would look at what he’d done and decided to leave it. Clint was grieving too. Natasha had been very reserved, and though the two of you were still close, the distance between her and everyone else seemed farther than ever.

You respected Natasha’s privacy and solitude, but sometimes you really need to talk to her. Much like Natasha, the Avengers were the only family you had, and you had lost them. You had survived and they hadn’t. Feelings were always bubbling in the pit of your stomach, but you had no way to express them. Exhaustion had kept you from your tears, but now that Steve was here, you broke down.

“She needs to grieve.” You took a long breath. “And so do I, frankly. Because everyone’s gone now Steve. There’s nothing left to fucking do. We have no leads about where they may have gone, or what the hell happened! Nothing is in our control anymore. There’s nothing left for us.” After your small outburst, the two of you sat in silence, hot tears trailing down your face.

“He loved you too, you know.” You looked up, red rimmed eyes, staring at him imploringly. “Bucky.”

Bucky. The one person that you had felt strongly towards. God, you wished you had just told him when you had the chance. But you let him walk off into battle before you could say anything.

You remembered the first time you saw the blue-eyed man. Clint had rushed you and Wanda out of the compound, exclaiming that Steve needed your help. Your friend had literally just thrown her boyfriend(?) through the ground, and everything about it seemed very illegal. Tony had told the two of you to stay inside the compound, but if Cap needed you, you went. After a fun journey to San Francisco to pick up Scott, the four of you found yourselves in a white van, traveling to an airport in Germany.

The first time you laid eyes on him, you could have sworn you were in heaven. Steve’s description of him did Bucky no justice. Long brown hair that fell right above his chin, and pink pouty lips. He had an angled jaw, that at the time you swore could get you pregnant it was so hot, and stubble that covered most of it. He had broad shoulders and you had to stop yourself from ogling his thighs. But what really caught your attention were his eyes. Bright and vibrant, yet tired and dull at the same time. In that moment, you had fallen in love.

However, your time with him wasn’t very long, as you soon after had to go and fight your old team. Once Steve and Bucky had gotten into the quinjet, you thought that was the last time you would see the pretty, blue-eyed boy. Months later though, after Steve came back to free you, Sam, Clint, Wanda, and Scott, he offered to take you to Wakanda. He knew you were tired, not looking to fight anymore, and T’Challa had offered asylum. Eagerly you had agreed, and flew to Wakanda, where you truly fell in love with James Buchanan Barnes.

Though Bucky was brought out of his cryostasis chamber three months after you had gotten there, the two of you had bonded fairly quickly. It did take him a while to open up to you, considering you had only a brief interaction, but after that, the two of you were inseparable. You would spend mornings watching the beautiful sunrise outside his hut and playing with the goats, afternoons working in the fields, and nights wrapped around each other with blankets, talking about nothing and everything all at once. Over the months, you found yourself falling farther and farther in love with Bucky, but you didn’t know what the two of you were. He always called you “doll”, “honey”, and “sweetheart”, and gave you forehead kisses. He came to you at night when he had nightmares and let you hold him until he fell asleep. But was that love? Did he feel anything for you? You hoped he did. But you let him get away, and now there was nothing left to say.

How?

Well, he said

You never knew how wonderful

That smile could make someone feel

Snapping out of your reverie, you focused back on Steve. “H-he loved me?” Steve chuckled softly and leaned over the table slightly, taking your hand in his.

“More than anything.” Nodding at him to keep going, he continued. “He told me right before we went to fight. Horrible timing, but that’s how it always is, huh. So goddamn cliche.”

Steve thought back to the conversation he had had with his oldest friend, and recounted it for you.

“What’s going on with you and Y/N, pal?” Steve smiled brightly at his best friend, even though they weren’t in the best circumstances for a catch-up, he was dying to know what was going on between two of his closest friends. Bucky bashfully grinned and dipped his head down in hopes that his best friend wouldn’t see his blush, but to no avail. “Aw, you’re sweet on her, aren’t you?”

“Steve, I’m not sweet on her.” Steve’s smile fell, but Bucky’s only grew. “I think I love her. No, I know I love her.” He smiled fondly into the distance, watching where you were exchanging greetings with Sam and Natasha near Shuri’s lab tables. You were laughing, head thrown back and teeth sparkling in the light. You had a tactical suit on, hair tied up in a sleek ponytail, a rifle in hand, and Bucky thought you never had looked prettier.

Steve had never seen Bucky like this. Calm, peaceful, in love. Granted, they hadn’t exactly been spending lots of time together in the past seventy years, but it made him happy to know that Bucky was happy. “In love? What about her?”

Bucky chuckled and looked back to his friend. “Where do you want me to start?” Bucky sighed before beginning his speech. “She is the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen. And from what I can remember, I knew a lot of girls back then. I know that waking up and getting to be around her everyday is a blessing, and makes me forget everything. She’s all sunshine and pure happiness, Steve.”

“What else, Buck?”

“She has the sweetest laugh in the world, and God, her smile is enough to make my entire day. It’s so real, just perfect. I only want to see that for the rest of my life. And she’s always there for me. Y/N is the most open-hearted person I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. She’s strong, hot-headed, kind, beautiful, funny, patient, and just so goddamn beautiful, inside and out. I would spend every single day with her by my side if that were possible.” Bucky then sighed, and his heart ached. Because though she was this wonderful human, how could she want him? His old, broken, damaged, quiet self? She deserved much better.

Steve grinned, completely missing Bucky’s face filled with self-doubt. “I think you’ve got it bad, Bucky. You should tell her.” The brunette simply shook his head.

“Maybe someday.”

But he kept it all inside his head

What he saw he left unsaid

And though he wanted to

He couldn't talk to you

He couldn't find the way

But he would always say

Your eyes started spilling more tears with Steve’s words. Bucky loved you. Bucky loved you. That information should have made you happy, but it just filled you with more grief. Silent sobs were felt through your whole body. “Oh sweet girl, what’s wrong?” Steve immediately got up to hug you, pulling your form into his body.

“We could've had a chance.” You managed to croak out. “We loved each other. We could’ve been happy together. It's strange really. We missed our opportunity.” Steve looked down at you and prodded you to continue your thoughts. “Stevie, I had so many reasons listed out in my head as to why I shouldn’t have told him. Maybe he thought of me as a sister, or wasn’t ready for a relationship. But to find out that we could’ve been happy together… it hurts worse than any of those options. We never told each other, and kept it inside of our heads. And now he’s gone.”

Steve continued to hold you throughout your breakdown. Your tears soaked his tee shirt, but he didn’t mind. And it was on that day in March of 2023, that the two of you mourned James Buchanan Barnes.

SEVEN MONTHS LATER

If someone had told Bucky that he would pass out in one battle and wake up to yet another one five years in the future, he probably would’ve hurt them. However, the only people he thought of hurting right now were Thanos and his stupid goonies. Blasting another creature to the ground, he grunted and pulled a hair tie off his wrist. Thank God Shuri forced him to carry them with him all the time, because his hair really was unmanageable. Tying half of his hair up in a small bun at the back of his head, he wondered what the hell was happening. No one had told him anything before they came onto this destructive wasteland. T’Challa just gave him a hand to help him off the ground, and told him that Steve needed his help.

Suddenly, a flash of navy blue sailed past him and it was like he was seeing you for the first time again. He stared at you, dumbfounded. Though he had only been gone for a few hours(in his point of view), you looked older, more mature, and a lot more tired. Your hair had been cut shorter, but you were still as beautiful as ever.

You brushed off some dust and looked around. The rest of your team had come back. Though you were in the middle of a battle, you couldn’t stop smiling. Tears were blocking your vision, but your emotions were on a rollercoaster right now, and you wanted all of it to be over. You saw Doctor Strange lifting up a storm along with many other wizards. Actually, were they wizards? You had no clue. Tony and Pepper fought side by side in the skies, and even Peter was holding the gauntlet as he rode on a pegasus’ back. But what caught most of your attention was the tall brunette, blue-eyed man staring right back at you.

“Bucky?” Tears found a path down your face, but you really didn’t care anymore. You ran towards him, aliens be damned. They could wait. After all, you had to wait five years.

Bucky saw you run towards him and he sprinted towards you with the same fervor, hot, salty tears falling from his eyes. His heart was filled with relief as he took you in.

And how do you say

I love you

Finally meeting each other in the middle, you grasped his face and brought your lips to his. He immediately gripped your waist and tugged you as close as he could to your body. This kiss was needy and heated, filled with hurry and passion. His tongue ran along your bottom lip, and you opened yourself up to him. When you finally pulled back for air, your heart was beating, fast.

“I love you, Bucky. So goddamn much.” Tears continued to flow down your cheeks, but you laughed, because after all these years, he was real, alive, and right in front of you.

“I love you too, Y/N. More than I can say.” He took his vibranium hand to wipe tears off your cheek, and pulled you back in for another kiss. This one, unlike the first one, was full of pure emotion, and the two of you put much more love into it. You smiled against his lips, and soon enough he did too. Because right now, in the middle of a battle, you found each other, and for now that was enough. No thoughts about the future, or the past. Just raw, pure, real love.

Doctor strange: ?/10- okay I call myself an mcu stan and I stand by that but I have only scene this film maybe once?? And boy that is not nearly enough times for my memory. I love benefit cosmetic’s, but why is playing an American??

Avengers Endgame: 5/10- 5 points for the powerful Wanda we deserved. -5 for time travel. Ew. Why?

Iron man: 6/10- HEAR ME OUT- okay I love Tony Stark with all my heart but this film is... kinda boring. That’s it. I’m sorry I don’t get it either I want to love this film!!!!

Black Panther: 6/10- HEAR ME OUT- I never really vibed with this film? The significance of it was real frickin cool but like at cinema level? It was boring. I don’t like T’Challa. Please don’t shoot me please I have a family

Thor: 6/10- okay this is a shitty film but also the Loki angst feeds my soul and I watch those scenes on YouTube every tuesday (-4 for the Thor cringe and the eyebrows)

Iron Man 2: 6/10- points purely for Natalie Rushman and the little birdy the villain has that is all.

Thor TDW: 6/10- okay this is also a shitty film but once again Loki!Angst! Is a beautiful thing! The OST and friggas death is... beautiful. Still a shitty film tho.

Captain Marvel: 6/10- HEAR ME OUT- I kind of don’t like... any of the characters in this film?? Idk. I can name like 2 at a push. I’ve watched it a lot and I just don’t rlly enjoy it all that much. 6 points for goose and that awesome Captain Marvel theme

Captain America TFA: 7/10- I love Bucky Barnes and Sebastian Stan with every fibre of my being and also the 40s fashion is beautiful (-3 points for nazis)

AntMan ATW: 7/10- I love ghost! And I wish she would be used more she is so cool and her powers are awesome and the soundtrack for this film is beautiful I love Christophe Beck

AntMan: 7/10- another I cannot rlly remember but 7 points for that Louis sequence and the family relationships and the OST, oh my

GOTG 2: 7/10- less memorable than the first, but Fleetwood Mac!!! And some good old team as family dynamics AND some very good fresh tasty angst for my cold dead heart

Iron Man 3: 8/10- i love it here!!! Realistic anxiety!! Likeable characters!! HARLEY!! Have watched many many times

Captain America CW: 8/10- I love the angst! And I love the Bucky! And the powers they give Wanda! But I hate all the accords shit cos none of it makes sense!

Avengers AOU: 9/10- HEAR ME OUT- I could recite the script of this film right here right now. Maybe I’m (incredibly) biased as a Wanda stan but also I never understood why people hate it?? It has so many beautiful scenes, and I love it so much, I watch it every other day

GOTG: 9/10- I love this funky 80s alien team bonding marathon. Some of the most emotional scenes of the entire mcu, and I love Gamora and nebula

Spider-Man homecoming: 9/10- oh boy, irondad is by far the best thing that ever happened to the mcu. I absolutely love how they integrated these characters. I literally live for the relationship. Not a 10 purely because I can’t watch high school cringe.

Captain America TWS: 10/10- PEAK mcu!! I’m with u til the end of the line... that right there is my SHIT. This film fuels me

Avengers: 10/10- PEAK family dynamic. I love the Loki return (and MORE Loki angst!!) I love the team. I love everything. A masterpiece.

Avengers Infinity War: 10/10- the hype for this was literally insane. I had a countdown for like three years and i could recite the trailer off by heart. I loved how it turned out. I loved the angst. I loved the powerful Wanda.

Spider-Man ffh: 10/10- as an irondad Stan this film hurt me in unimaginable ways. I love angst, have I mentioned that yet

WHY THERE WERE NO REAL HEROES IN CIVIL WAR (EXCEPT T’CHALLA)

Tony and Steve were both right AND wrong

Tony was right in that the Avengers needed restrictions, and Steve was right in that the government fucking sucks

The entire thing could’ve been solved with simple communication and it’s not fair to place the blame entirely on either party

Tony’s actions were fueled primarily by his guilt and Steve is just a stubborn son of a bitch who wanted to do what was right (and protect his buddy from the forties at all costs)

STEVE AND SHARON IS NOT/WASN’T INCEST

Before Endgame (which created a DIFFERENT timeline), Steve and Peggy were never really together, they kissed once, y’all are complaining about Steve “ruining her life” because of one lip lock but he also can’t move on and be with someone else (who just happens to be her niece), which he didn’t originally know about

Also y’all are justifying female Thor by saying it’s in the comics, but Steve and Sharon are in the comics too (no shade)

WHY TONY STARK WAS NOT A BAD FATHER FIGURE

I’m not saying recruiting him in Civil War was a good thing, but the writers wanted to introduce Spider-Man, and I think Tony knew the risks and decided that Peter would be fine

In Homecoming, Tony took away the suit because Peter was acting reckless, he didn’t want him to get himself killed, and he didn’t want him to make the same Patented Stark Mistakes

Peter is a fucking angel, but he needed to be a dumbass teenage boy before he could be Spider-Man

Also there’s a time lapse between that movie and Endgame in which Peter and Tony bonded, y’all antis are acting like Peter resents Tony (bitch w h e r e), and did those interactions during Infinity War and Endgame look anything like an unhealthy relationship

Our point is that Tony isn’t perfect but he’s still #1 Dad

WHY STEVE ROGERS AND BUCKY BARNES AREN’T IN LOVE (SORRY STUCKY SHIPPERS)

Do we support Steve being bi? Sure, but he ain’t gay for Bucky

The only love interests our blonde patriot has had (canonically), are both strong independent women, Bucky has had zero (unless you count that random chick at the expo, and Dolores)

You can’t compare Dark Phoenix’s Cherik to Endgame’s Stucky when Cherik always had subtext, we never were under the impression that Stucky was anywhere near becoming canon (if you ship it anyway, more power to you, to each their own)

WHY PROFESSOR HULK AND OLD STEVE WERE LAZY WRITING, BUT ALSO WHY IT DOESN’T MAKE STEVE A TERRIBLE PERSON

Professor Hulk was just weird but we don’t need to tell anybody that

It was the easy way to write off Bruce Banner and he deserved better than that, it could have at least gotten more foreshadowing

Old Steve erased all of the character development from movies past

Such as events leading through Winter Soldier, culminating to the end of Age of Ultron

“I’m home”, he says to Tony, guess not

The man moved on only to look through some fucking blinds and end up right back at square one

BUT traveling to the forties to live his life with Peggy does not make him as much of an asshole as you think it does

As previously mentioned, I don’t believe Steve would leave the new timeline’s Bucky to be experimented on by Hydra, and I don’t believe he would leave Natasha in the Red Room either

Some of y’all don’t seem to understand that he didn’t change the original timeline, he made ANOTHER, in which he and Peggy were happily married (he didn’t steal anything from her)

In the new timeline, if Peggy’s former husband was Daniel Sousa, you could see this as the timeline in which he marries Violet (if you watched Agent Carter)

WHY THE DEATHS UNFORTUNATELY MADE SENSE EVEN THOUGH WE HATED THEM

If Tony had survived Endgame he just would’ve continued being called back in to fight (at least this way he finally got to take a nap)

He’s been struggling since the first Iron Man movie

It was a callback to the first Avengers where he wouldn’t lay down on the wire and let the other guy crawl over him

No matter what you people say he deserves the title of Godfather of the MCU

Black Widow’s death was also a callback because, in sacrificing herself for the soul stone, she finally felt as though she had wiped the red from her ledger

Instead of saving a man “no more virtuous than herself”, she saved half the fucking universe

Don’t @ us we love these characters a lot

Prompt: What would the Avengers be like in college, more importantly, what would they be like if Y/N existed around them?

The rest of the week went pretty smooth. You were trying to make sure all of your schedules and things lined up. On Friday you had physics lab so you were with Tony, Bruce, and Stephen again.

Just as lab got started, you got the invitation out of your backpack and handed it to Stephen.

“Hey, wanted to give you this before I forgot. No pressure or anything. If you don’t want to meet up, that’s cool. But we do have free pizza and drinks so, if you don’t come for anything else…” you joked, laughing slightly.

You weren’t sure why you were trying so hard to get this guy to like you, you just really needed him to.

“Stop trying to recruit people, Y/N. It’s like you’re a cult leader,” Tony remarked, shuddering slightly as he help set up the experiment.

“I’m not a cult leader because I want people to join a fun club, how is that a cult?”

“Do you offer food and drink?” Bruce asked.

“Yes, I just said that but--”

“Do you insist they meet up every chance they get?” Tony inquired.

“Well, once a month is mandatory, but we try to go to as many events as we can--”

“Do you stand there and tell people why you’re better than everyone else and how everyone else won’t make it in life if they don’t join you?”

You glared at them before turning back to your lab. You mumbled, “Fuck you two.”

This made Bruce and Tony slightly snicker as Stephen looked at the invite.

“I'll join your cult. I wasn’t involved much at my old school, but I’d like to be here,” he explained, with a warm grin at you.

You smiled over at him. “Well thank you for joining our cult--I mean, club.” You shot a playful smile at Tony and Bruce who merely shook their heads.

Around 6:30 you got a text from Natasha to the huge group chat you all shared. She wanted to see if anyone would be up for getting together for coffee at the cafe on campus. After a pretty stressful and busy week, you jumped at the chance.

Nat would be there, of course, and Clint. She and Clint had started dating senior year of highschool and had a pretty strong bond, never broke up once and very rarely ever fought. Wanda and her brother Pietro chimed in and said they would come. Surprisingly, T’Challa agreed as well. Bucky and Steve said they were on their way over. Sam would come as soon as his class was out, and the rest said they just wanted to catch up on some sleep before studying tomorrow.

For a split second, you wondered if you should do the same, but then you realized that you worked really hard all week, every night, and that you needed a break or you would burn out.

You grabbed your bag and dashed out of your dorm, over a few buildings to the cafe. Nat and Clint were already there, cozy in a corner.

“Hey!” you greeted as you came over. You threw your bag down, got your wallet out, and went to order your favorite coffee with a water on the side. As soon as you paid, you ducked back over to the table while Bucky and Steve came inside the cafe, spotting the three of you. They waved and walked over. As soon as everyone got settled in with their drinks, conversation slowly started.

“So how is everyone’s first week?” Wanda wondered as she sipped some tea.

“Awful. You wouldn’t believe--” Pietro started but she cut him off.

“I’ve already heard all of your complaining all week,” she said evenly. “I want to hear someone else’s.”

Wanda and Piet lived off campus, nearby in an apartment together.

Pietro rolled his eyes and sat back in his chair.

“I heard Tony is throwing a party tomorrow night, is anyone going to that?” Steve asked before reaching for his cup.

“Ugh, no. He always gets the drunkest,” Wanda said.

“Isn’t that what makes it fun?” Sam retorted.

“Yeah watching Stark get drunk off his ass is the highlight of all of his gigs,” Bucky said with a smirk and a slight laugh.

“You mean like how you almost stole a cop car the last time you got drunk?” Clint asked.

“I wasn’t going to steal it. I wanted to sit in it because-- you know what, nevermind.”

“Y/N, T’Challa?” Steve asked, pointing to you two.

“I have a lot to do. Don’t really have time for anything like that,” T’Challa said simply. Which made sense, seeing as he was political science major and constantly working on campaigns. Sometimes for his father, other times for his father’s friend. His dad is a Congressman.

“Yeah, me either. I need to get the pre-scripts club shit together. Plus do all my homework from this week,” you explained.

“Oh god, again with the huge life plan!” Bucky exclaimed, teasing as he threw up his hands.

“It wouldn’t hurt you to have a plan, Bucky,” you shot back with a coy smile.

“The only plan I need is how to pass that stupid mechanics class…. Stark said he’d help me but I don’t know…”

“Why don’t you just let him help you?” Nat asked, peering at her friend with one eyebrow cocked.

“Because he’s gonna be a cocky ass about it, and I don’t want that. I can do it on my own.”

“He says as he struggles,” Sam teased.

Bucky waded up a napkin and threw it at him.

“Yeah my art history class seems needlessly tedious,” Wanda informed.

“Oh, who do you have?” Steve asked, seeing as they were both art minors.

“Peterson?”

“Oh, he’s not too bad. Just pay attention to dates and the artist names, that’s pretty much all you need.”

“Thanks,” she said, shooting him a smile.

“Sports?” Natasha asked, prompting all the athletes to talk about their extracurriculars.

“Archery is about to start next week, and I’m fucking stoked,” Clint informed. “I get to train them this year because coach says I’m better than him. I am so ready to make the fresh meat work for it.”

Everyone laughed a little.

“Just go easy on them,” you slightly begged.

He chuckled, shaking his head. “Oh no, they’re in for it. I’m going to build them into the best damn archers in North America.”

“Football practice has been good so far,” Steve stated simply, diverting everyone’s attention. “Mostly got everyone back from last year. We have about three new faces.”

“Oh, speaking of football,” you suddenly said, piping in.

“Hmm?” Steve inquired.

“Thor, do you know him well?”

“Thor? Yeah, he’s pretty good. Honestly I think he should be quarterback, not me, but he’s a pretty good fullback, for now. Why?”

“I met his brother, the theater major? Loki… he’s…”

“Loki?” Clint asked, perplexed. “You mean that weird kid with the black hair and looks like he needs to get out in the sun?”

You laughed slightly. “That’s the one. But he’s really cool, so far. He isn’t anything like Thor, from what I can tell.”

“Sometimes siblings are like that. One is amazing and one is just so-so,” Pietro piped up as he put his elbow on his sister’s shoulder, making her laugh before pushing him off.

“Thor talks about Loki, a little. It’s usually pretty good. What class do you have with him?” Steve wondered.

“Lit. He seems to know his stuff,” you noted.

“Oh no, I know that look,” Nat said with a side smile.

“What look?” you asked, frowning.

“That look you get when intelligence gets you hot.”

“What… what are you talking about?” you stuttered a little as you blushed.

Sam rolled his eyes as he chimed in, “Oh come on, Y/N. We all know you’re a sucker for a big... brain.”

“Really? Then why did she ever date Bucky?” T’Challa asked before a smirk crept onto his face.

His comment made everyone laugh except Bucky who simply said, “Hey!”

“I don’t like him like… that,” you said, realizing you were failing miserable and blushing so much you thought you’d melt the ice in the drinks on the table. “Well… not really…”

“Oooh… So it’s true. I didn’t peg you for a lit major sort of person,” Pietro commented, appraising you.

“I’m not,” you argued a little too fast.

“If we are talking about people we found interesting,” Wanda said, taking the attention off you, “I really like this guy in my history class. His name is Josh and he’s really sweet.”

“There’s a girl named Molly in one of my classes,” Sam added.

“Oh, yeah, I saw her, she’s a real doll,” Steve added, giving his approval.

“I plan on getting her number next week,” Sam informed, a proud smile on his face.

“Well good luck to you two,” you said raising your cup.

“Oh, come on, Y/N. If it’s not this Loki, then who is it?” Natasha pressed.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re being pretty evasive about feelings and crushes tonight. Makes someone wonder if maybe you do have a crush, but we just guessed the wrong guy.”

“I have seen you walk out of your physics class talking to someone, who is that guy?” Bucky inquired.

Your eyes flashed to him, a scolding in your gaze. He was fishing for information that he had no right to.

“He’s… his name is Stephen. He’s a pre-med student. He’s going to come to the club, that’s all I know,” you said innocently.

A small round of “ahs” went around the table.

“That’s it, that’s the guy,” Sam said definitively, earning a nod from just about everyone else.

“What the hell does that mean?” you asked, your voice defensive.

“Face it, Y/N,” Bucky interjected. “You like a certain type.”

“The successful type,” T’Challa said with a nod.

“Yeah, when you aren’t dating Bucky, you date pre-law, pre-pharm, or science majors. You just gravitate towards those type. And with him being pre-med, and you being pre-med…” Steve answered, the idea trailing off.

“You all really think I’m that shallow?” you asked, a bit of teasing shock in your tone.

A resounding “Yes” came in unison your way. With a huff you shook your head, rolled your eyes, and crossed your arms over your chest.

“Okay, so I have a type, does that make me a bad person?”

“No one said it made you a bad person,” Sam lightly corrected. “We just know you… and your type happen to be the success type.”

“And that’s a bad thing? Should I aim for a guy that his goals peak at landing a retail gig?”

“No… we’re just saying when it comes to guys, you don’t follow your heart,” Natasha softly said.

“Yeah, she follows their wallet,” Pietro noted with a snicker before Wanda smacked his arm, hard.

“All we’re saying is that you have a certain plan, and life, set in your mind and that’s what you go after,” Wanda stated gently.

After a moment, you nodded and talk began circling around shitty professors, as well as really good ones. People offered tips where they could for professor’s they’d already taken. The rest of the night was relatively smooth, but you couldn’t get over what your friends had said. Were they right? Did you really gravitate only towards the “serious” professionals? If so, why were you that shallow?

Not that I’ve changed my opinion on Civil War but you know, I don’t hate anyone, so here I am browsing the ‘Steve Rogers & Tony Stark’ tag on Ao3.

Looking for those awesome fics where these two are hilarious in their compatible inversiveness (is that a word?🤔) in the tag dedicated to their friendship, all I find for the first two pages are ‘not Team Cap friendly’, ‘not Steve Rogers friendly’ fics.

What I also find are ‘James “Bucky” Barnes’ & Tony Stark’, ‘James “Bucky” Barnes/Tony Stark’, ‘Natasha Romanoff & Tony Stark’ and ‘Natasha Romanoff/Tony Stark’.

Now once upon a time, this would make me sad. Not because I don’t want to see any ‘- & Tony Stark’ or ‘- /Tony Stark’ fics, I don’t ship it but whatever floats your boat, but because the amount of anti and hate sentiment is very disheartening. Especially when you have the space to fix things and are not debating canon.

Now? Now this just makes me laugh.

It’s been 3 years since Civil War, 3 years of both teams living separate lives, 3 more years of the SteveNat platonic romance, 3 years of Team Cap being on the run but with support, 3 more years of Tony living his best life with Pepper, Rhodey and Happy (and now Peter and May), 3 more years of Steve & Bucky being best friends, 3 years of T’Challa giving Team Cap a safe place and them being okay with no one having to suffer, but Team Iron Man stans are still not over what happened to an extent that pretty crazy xD

(Now I’m not bashing fans, I specifically only mean stans. None of the teams just ‘got over’ what happened, nor did the fans. But fics represent more than an opinion, they represent what you think could have, can and should happen. It’s not hard to find anti Steve or Tony, or anti anyone, posts on Tumblr but finding anti Tony fics is much harder, especially compared to Anti Team Cap. Trust me, I did the research.)

Like holy hell. I get it. You think Tony was wronged and a victim and blah blah. Cool. Maybe it’s true. It’s all a matter of opinion in some ways (more or less). It’s not like I don’t know the fandom was divided. But what’s hilarious af is when they get in other players who’d either explicitly stated non-allegiance or who would have no idea and won’t care about the Accords.

The funniest scenarios have to be these-

Bucky’s a chill dude who loves Tony, everyone hates Steve - evidently these dumbass stans haven’t watched any of the Cap movies. And yes, I say this knowing they’ve seen Civil War. *stares into the camera Office-style* Forget about who’s right and imagine Bucky choosing anyone over Steve or not being on Steve’s side. Say that with a straight face after watching any movie with Bucky in it. (Let’s not even talk about the comics where Bucky wanted to kill Tony and only stopped because Tony gave him the shield and said Steve wanted him to be Cap.) The height of delusion is just nuts.

Natasha cares about Tony so much she’s gonna kick Steve’s ass - there’s no denying the OG 6 have a bond and the first one we see is Nat and Tony. They’re buddies. But Steve is Nat’s partner. Her best friend. He’s Steve. Have people watched CA: tWS? Let me answer that, no. Also, CA: CW, or IW or Endgame? Like seriously? Nat might not harm Tony for Bucky, she won’t ever want to harm Tony; but she’ll do whatever it takes to keep Steve safe and she’ll go far as she has to to do that.

Bruce would pick Tony’s side - now the dilemma is that of course they’re buddies, science bros ftw, BUT if anyone thinks Bruce would willingly pick a side with General Thaddeus Ross on it, then these kids have no idea what Marvel is about and literally only watch RDJ with brains off.

T’Challa and Shuri kicking Team Cap out - watch IW and see me roll my eyes.

Stephen Strange and Carol Danvers whopping Team Cap’s ass - Strange doesn’t care either way, he won’t sign the Accords and he doesn’t give a shit about either side, and I’m willing to bet that given her history, not only would Carol know of and admire Cap, she won’t be pro Accords either.

Now listen. Tony has his own circle of ridiculously loyal friends. There’s no doubt that Pepper, Rhodey and Happy will always support him and to varying degrees, Vision and Peter will always have his back too (Vision does love Wanda and while Peter adores Tony, he’s a kid and he didn’t actually know about when the Accords during CW).

So when I see a fic that’s very much against Team Cap, while it’s nuts that its in the SteveTony friendship tag, I can take it for what it is when it’s very pro Accords and all of Team Cap goes under.

I see a fic with Rhodey or Pepper or even Peter letting lose on Team Cap, cool, okay.

I see a fic where Tony stops paying for Team Cap and they are taken aback, I’ll even laugh! I’m guessing Steve will have money from back pay and Shield, Sam used to have a job and Nat can get enough money for everyone, but hey, it’s a hilarious premise and one that I actually feel Tony should do. Regardless of whether I agree with him or not, one can’t expect him to fund people against him and it’s very strange when people still expect him to finance Team Cap.

So I’m not unreasonable. And it’s not like I’ve commented on a single fic, because they’re allowed to dream up whatever they want, but the bulleted list of scenarios above make me laugh because damn, there’s fanfiction which works in canon but changes course and then there’s a total dream world that you should call like it is and tag it an AU.

endgame review (spoilers!!!)

okay so now that i’ve finally stopped crying and had a good night’s sleep here are all of my thoughts on avengers endgame:

the opening scene with clint losing his wife and kids -- my heart was in my throat the whole time; i felt so so bad for him

tony FINALLY telling steve off for everything; as a lifelong tony stan this was super cathartic

scott reuniting with cassie; in fact, all of scott’s scenes were awesome

bonus - the fact that the only reason any of this was able to happen was because a rat accidentally turned the machine back on

the fact that tony got married to pepper!!! and had a daughter!!! he was such a good dad to baby morgan i loved it

the way they treated thor. taika made thor so amazing in ragnarok and the russos (and the screenwriters) got jealous and shit all over it!!! wtf!!! (and all of the fat jokes and jokes about his ptsd were NOT cool. didn’t like rocket slapping him out of his panic attack either.) can’t believe they made him an alcoholic who sits on his ass and plays fortnite all day. wtf.

for that matter -- i CANNOT believe that he would just up and fuck off with the guardians of the galaxy and abandon his people. is valkyrie a worthy leader??? absolutely. but so is thor!!! that was his entire arc in endgame like WTF!!!! (also the fact that we didn’t get a thorkyrie kiss is fucking CRIMINAL)

also why couldn’t he keep the short hair??? why did he have to get mjolnir back when taika went to all the trouble of showing he didn’t need the hammer to be a hero? did they just want to fuck up EVERYTHING that taika did?

no you know what? i’m going to go into this further. do i like steve? no. i never have. his actions toward tony in civil war put him on my shitlist forever, and that’s all i am willing to say about that. but you expect me to believe that steve fucking rogers (who KNEW that peggy moved on, lived a good life and had a husband and kids) really went back and fucked up the timeline just to be with her? he barely knew her!! they barely bonded in the first avenger at all!! also there are so many plotholes with how in the world he managed that (what happened when the other cap woke up from the ice???) also does this mean that his ‘romance’ with sharon is technically incest??? and did he just live out the rest of his life with peggy knowing that bucky was being tortured by hydra? insert “it’s bad writing” gif here.

(i am glad that he passed the shield onto sam though. bucky would have been a terrible choice for captain america.)

ALSO. you know who would have been a better choice to go back in time and live the rest of their life with the people that they loved and could not be with due to reasons outside their control? CAROL MOTHERFUCKING DANVERS. let her go back in time and live a happy life with her wife and kid. #carolmaria4evr

the fact that natasha died instead of clint. i literally cannot fucking believe that they fridged the first female avenger just for clint’s (and everyone’s) man pain. it was bad enough when they fridged gamora for thanos’s man pain. clint should have died in nat’s place and the fact that he didn’t is a huge fucking cop out and that’s the that on that.

for that matter -- clint’s entire storyline prior to going back in time was WILD. his only explanation for killing all those people was “thanos snapped half the universe and you didn’t die so imma kill you.” FUCKING WHAT????

the fact that the russos are patting themselves on the back for their “woke lgbt rep” that was actually just a “leave for the bathroom and miss it” extra. you know what would have been better? a stucky ending. a sambucky ending. carol going home to monica and maria. valkyrie kissing a girl. ANYTHING would have been better than that.

speaking of carol -- she was CRIMINALLY underused in this movie. she was barely shown mourning fury (and also!!! why did we get no confirmation about monica and maria????) and barely spoke to the team in general. i thought she was going to have a major role (and would help them go back in time) but she didn’t and that disappointed me.

did i like the fact that she destroyed thanos’s fleet? yes. but i wish she was used more. she’s the most powerful avenger ever!!! and i wish that she got to speak more with tony as they’re friends in the comics.

(BRIE LARSON IS AN ACADEMY AWARD WINNING ACTRESS AND THEY BARELY USED HER!!! LIKE WTF)

i won’t even get into the makeup thing bc that’s already been said and done. actually no i will. there was no reason for her to have perfect hair and lipstick and makeup. that’s not who she is. please let butch ladies continue to be butch please and thank you.

the fact that they didn’t bring gamora and natasha back :(

this might be controversial but i didn’t love the fact that pepper and tony suddenly retired to a lakehouse and became stay at home parents. i was totally expecting pepper and tony to keep running stark industries and make it into a charity organization that helped people in need/those affected by the snap.

the fact that they never fucking explained how time travel worked and WHY they couldn’t just go back and kill thanos as a baby (that was a good suggestion!). and the thing where nebula shot her past self and somehow lived??? it made no sense. i mean. i know it’s bad writing. but i was expecting it to be at least a LITTLE better. where are my explanations.

speaking of bad writing -- did the avengers ever come out and say the reason that everyone got dusted? did everyone know it was bc of thanos? why are some places in such states of disrepair and others are not? who ruled wakanda since shuri and t’challa were dusted? so many unanswered questions. rip.

the directing of the final battle was on par with the throne room battle scene in the last jedi in that both are chaotic and messy and that’s the that on that. as was the scene where hawkeye was beating up the yakuza. messy. lame. yawn.

the scene with all of the female superheroes. was it cool? sure. do i wish natasha could have been there? YES. do i wish that the mcu had more female superheroes? DOUBLE YES. was it a blatant attempt for the russos to pat themselves on the back and be like “sEE!! WE’RE FEMINISTS!!! LOOK AT US!!”?? definitely.

honestly, i was expecting the acting to be way worse than it was based on how all my mutuals were going off about it. overall, though, it was clear in some scenes that the actors had no idea what the context of their lines were and the acting was pretty meh throughout, and for the biggest marvel movie of the year the acting should be a damn sight better than “meh”. but this just reinforces what i know already, which is that the russos are shitty directors. get them as far away from the mcu as possible please and thank you.

things i wish we got:

a carolmaria reunion

a peter&may reunion

a fury&everyone (and esp a fury&carol reunion)

clint sacrificing himself instead of nat sacrificing herself

valkyrie talking to thor about overcoming alcoholism and ptsd

thor staying in new asgard with his people

steve going back and dancing with peggy like he promised and THEN going back to the future (where all of his friends are) and retiring or helping fury bring back shield.

better writers

better directors

an end credits scene that set up phase 4 (tho i assume we will be getting that in spiderman far from home)

tldr - thor got fucked over. tony is a hero and the love of my life. steve shouldn’t have gone back in time to be with peggy. nat shouldn’t have been fridged. the writing was meh and the directing was worse. not the complete and utter shitshow i was expecting, but not the so-called greatest movie in the mcu. give rdj an honorary oscar. 6/10.

The next few months flew by, Sebastian and Min had been exploring their ‘Relationship’ in lots of ways where there friends all start to question if they were actually together or not. The pair just shrugs it off and says they are just friends but none of their friends were buying it especially when they are literally always together either in Los Angeles or New York, even to the point where they have each others clothes in their closets.

Their publicist were having a field day with the pairs relationship because there was always pictures of them together either just going on morning runs, workout at gyms, out to breakfast, lunch, dinner, to vacations together. So they decided to play it to their hand saying they were just best friends and fans all around are going crazy about it shipping BuckLin everywhere.

They were currently on the press tour for Captain America Civil War and the pair are always doing interviews together fueling the fans.

“So we are here today with our favorite onscreen Marvel couple, Sebastian Stan and MinYoung Tudor, how are you guys today?”

“Hi there, we are doing great actually. Quite excited for you to watch the movie.” Min said

“In the trailer it looks like you guys are going to have more BuckLin scenes, is that true?”

“Yes, in the movie there will be a few BuckLin scene.” Sebastian answered.

“You guys chemistry on screen is just as great off screen. So fans out there have been wondering has BuckLin dynamic leaked out to real life as well since there have been lots of picture of you guys together lately.” The interviewers ask making the pair laugh.

“I told you this question is one of the hottest questions this press tour.” Min said nudging Sebastian playfully.

“No Min and I are not together. We are best friends actually who enjoys each other company hence all the pictures of us together.”

“Ouch I think you both just broke a lot of hearts just now.”

“I doubt it, I think if news of Sebastian Stan is no longer single then there will be a lot more broken hearts.” Min answered winking at the camera.

After Steve dropped his shield helping Bucky and Linda out of the base they were confronted by T’Challa who apologized for his actions, knowing now that Bucky wasn’t the one who killed his father and offered Wakanda as a safe Haven for them.

“She is going to be fine, you need your rest.” Steve said to Bucky who was watching Shuri and the team examine Linda through the window.

“I can’t lose her Stevie. I just got her back.” Bucky said painfully.

“I know, Linda is strong she will be fine.” Steve said before Shuri comes out with a frustrated scowl on her face.

“She is in a comatose like state, I can’t pinpoint exactly what because technically she isn’t exactly human but her brain function is still there and nothing inside her is wrong. I think we should just give her time to wake up on her own I guess.” Shuri said with an apologetic look on her face. “Are you sure you want to go through with the Cryo Sergeant Barnes?”

“My mind is not safe, until you find a way to remove the words out of my mind I am not safe anywhere.” Bucky said.

“What if Linda wakes up?” Steve asks.

“Then I hope she will understand my decision on keeping her and everyone safe. I know she will be under great care and have you with her.” Bucky answers Steve while touching her face with a sad smile. “Please don’t be mad at me my love.” He said giving her forehead a longing kiss before Shuri and her team hooks him up in the machine.

A month later Shuri was in her lab working on the solution to help Bucky remove his trigger words when Linda room starts to buzz on her Kimoyo beads causing her to rush over to her room only to run right into Steve who was already there.

“Did you trigger anything?” Shuri asks Steve.

“No, I thought you did.” Steve said punching in the code to her room. When they door opens Linda was sitting on her bed with her head down.

“Linda?” Steve asks cautiously walking toward her, when she lifted her head up he stopped in his tracks seeing her stare back at him with black eyes.

“Steve. I can’t feel Linda.” Luna answered obviously crying. “I can’t feel her anymore.”

Steve approaches the crying girl hugging her tightly into his chest not knowing how to comprehend the feeling of his lost friend.

“What am I going to tell James?” She whispers into his chest feeling him flinch. “Steve wheres James?” Luna asks only to have him pull away to look at her with a sad look on his face until Shuri spoke up.

“Sergeant Barnes requested to be put back into Cryo until I am able to help remove his trigger words and hoped you would respect his decision.”

“I want to see him.” Luna said ripping the IVs attached to her body.

“Hey don’t do that.” Shuri said frustrated trying to stop her.

“Take me to see James.” Luna said radiating her energy to the things around her to float.

“Luna calm down, I will take you to see Bucky.” Steve said calming her down bringing her over to Bucky's pod.

Steve and Shuri watches Luna approach the pod slowly lifting her hand up to touch the glass near his face before closing her eyes resting her head on the glass as tears slowly falls.

“I am sorry, I can’t save her.” Luna whispered. “How long has he been in here?”

“Sergeant Barnes has been in Cryo for about a month.” Shuri said.

“Thank you for keeping him safe Princess Shuri, I am sorry for my episode before. I just need to see him, he is my anchor here.” Luna said bowing to Shuri.

“No need to bow, I am surprised you know who I am.”

“I am Luna Raforkun born over a thousand years ago, I know many things.” Luna answered before looking over at Steve.

“So you can’t feel her anymore?” Steve asked.

“When she fought Tony that day, she generated so much power by herself, she couldn’t handle it. I tried to help her but she stopped me.” Luna said shaking her head as tears continue to fall. Steve tried to approach her but she steps back.

“I was supposed to protect her but I failed you, I failed James, I failed Linda. I don’t deserve you.” Luna said looking back at Bucky peaceful face.

“Don’t say that, we will figure this out.” Steve said approaching her again hugging her into his chest.

“Captain Rogers is right Luna, we will figure this out. We will help Sergeant Barnes and bring Linda back.” Shuri said confidently.

“How are you so sure you can do that?” Luna asks.

“So I was in the final stages of figuring out how to remove Sergeant Barnes words before you decided to make an appearance. Plus when you were out we received a letter addressed to you. Captain Rogers insisted on it being an invasion of privacy but this is my lab, so my rules I opened it. I think you would find the letter to be helpful.” Shuri said opening her cabinet pulling out the letter and a small package handing it to Luna.

“I tried to stop her but she is consistent in opening it.” Steve commented.

“Yeah but I was quite disappointed when I did because I can’t seem to figure out the language it is written in.” Shuri admitted making Steve smirk at her. “Oh rub that smirk of your face. At least I know it's not a bomb or something.”

“The reason why you can’t figure out the language its written in because its written in a language only your soul bond can understand.” Luna said softly looking at the letter.

Dear my love Luna,

Right now you are confused on why I have written you this letter, I know you have lost your connection with Linda but I promise you she is still in there. She right now is trapped within yourself, almost like a protective bubble, and the only way for her to be free is through your both mutual love for James Buchanan Barnes. If he loves you like he claims he does then there is only one way for you to bring Linda back. You have to soul bond with him like how you once were with me. Inside the package is the crystals you will need, he is the only one that can help you set free Linda because he is the one that shares that connection deeply with her. However, if he doesn’t love you like he claims then you already know the result of what happens when you soul bond with someone who doesn’t truly love you. I hope this will help you my love. I wish you all the happiness in your life and if James is the one to do it then I hope you two the best because no matter what you say or do I will always love you.

“What did the letter say?” Steve asks knowing who it was from.

“It lets me know how I can bring Linda back.” Luna said.

“Thats great news how do we do it.” Shuri said excitedly.

“Through the person who has a strong connection with Linda.” Luna said looking over to Bucky pod with a sad smile on her face.

“Why aren’t you happy?” Steve asks confused.

“Because in order to bring her back we have to soul bond with James.”

“And?”

“What if he doesn’t want to soul bond with me?”

“Luna, is that even a question? Bucky loved you since he practically met you, he will be stoked to soul bond with you and whatever it entitles.” Steve said.

“Because he loved Linda, how do you know if he loves me too?”

“Then there is only one way to find out. Now let me get back to work finishing this trigger word 2.0 remover.” Shuri said earning a weird look from Luna and Steve. “What? I haven’t had time to create a name for it yet.”

Wednesday Roundup 4.10.2017

This week ended up being a relatively light reading week for yours truly, but that doesn’t lessen the quality of my enjoyment whatsoever. In fact, I had enough love to share that I wanted to go over all of the available Marvel Legacy Primers for this week as well, even if they’re just short blurbs!

So without further ado let’s jump into it.

Marvel’s America, Marvel’s Black Panther, Marvel’s Incredible Hulk, Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man, Marvel’s Jean Grey, Marvel’s Monsters Unleashed, Dark Horse’s Usagi Yojimbo, Lion Forge’s Voltron Legendary Defender, Viz’s Yona of the Dawn

Marvel’s America - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2017-present) Robbie Thompson, David Lopez

As interested as I am in America, I haven’t had the opportunity to really follow her outside of the Young Avengers run she is in. So I think, oddly enough, for me this is one of the most necessary “Primers” of any of the ones I’ve read so far, and the information was very good to have. It really helped to frame her history, her relationship with her mothers, and her confidence in herself in a new light that is really appreciated. And the art from David Lopez is as beautiful as any of his issues on All-New Wolverine.

Marvel’s Black Panther - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2016-present) Robbie Thompson, Wilfredo Torres

There’s honestly not going to be that much more to say on most of these Primer pages. They’re fun, quick run throughs of relevant histories of the characters and teams that they showcase and depending on your interest and engagement may influence whether or not you want to hop in on the next storyline that they’re promoting.

I do like the sense of unity and legacy that is built into the Black Panther title already, having it be a responsibility tied to kingship that T’Challa knows and the all-important bond it has between him and the memory of his father.

It really puts a spin on the importance of Legacy that this event seems intent on hammering home.

Marvel’s Captain Marvel - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2016-present) Robbie Thompson, Brent Schoonover

Carol Danvers is one of those characters I desperately want to lie on every feasible surface level, but whose books have never quite got me on board and whose guest appearances always leave me a bit more confused about her than I had been before her said appearance. And yet there was still not a whole lot added here. I appreciate it, and young Carol is adorable, but there was nothing here that didn’t make me feel like... well, like she’s Hal Jordan. And ‘m not a fan of Hal Jordan.

Marvel’s Incredible Hulk - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2017-present) Robbie Thompson, Joe Bennett

Everything I have read so far with Amadeus Cho, both in Totally Awesome Hulk and in his guest appearances or team-ups in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur to Champions has really connected to me on a level that Bruce Banner hadn’t exactly managed over the years. So it was nice to see a little blurb that went over their mutual histories and explored what was there.

It almost makes people forget that Marvel unnecessarily killed Bruce Banner for... no reason. Almost. Not quite. Though he might be alive by now. I am obviously not current.

Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2016-present) Robbie Thompson, Valerio Schiti

Gah, reading this overview of Tony and Riri’s history really reminded me how much I really loved reading Invincible Iron Man when it first came out and just how much I positively adored Riri’s character and her banter with Tony. You know. Before they completely undid the relationship within the first storyline and then Bendis went all Bendis on us and it became obvious that Tony was coming back sooner than later and then Secret Empire destroyed the world... somewhat literally.

I’d love to read a Riri-centric book in better circumstances. Or at least once the next trade is out. We’ll see.

Marvel’s Jean Grey - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2017-present) Robbie Thompson, Mark Bagley

I was actually just recently talking to my good friend @shobogan about how much more interested I would be in Young Jean Grey if only Marvel had the guts to either give us a romantic relationship with her and Laura (or her, Laura, and Scott OT3 hullo) or have Older Jean Grey return to mentor her younger self and others at the school since she’s the only X-Man kept dead for this long who was considered a Top Tier X-Man. And since we’re finally getting the latter, it seems, now I have to look at what we know of Young Jean and consider my feelings all over again. And this primer gave me the opportunity to do just that!

While I’m not following Jean’s book at the moment, I’m obviously a pretty big X-fan so I have a general sense of where all the moving pieces are at the moment. And I have to say, with Older Jean returning it’s going to be a pretty awesome time for comparing and contrasting their characters and relationships. After all, this younger Jean is far, far less experienced than her counterpart, but has a peripheral knowledge of her own fate, and as much as she tries to not be defined by it, it’s been defining her in the opposite direction in a sense. And more than that, she’s a Jean who sees the Phoenix Force not as an asset or a tool, but sees it as an honest to god enemy, which I’m not sure how that will work. And I’m even more interested in Jean’s return now because of the possibilities of their interactions with the Force together.

Guess we’ll wait and see!

Marvel’s Monsters Unleashed - Marvel Legacy Primer Pages (2017-present) Robbie Thompson, David Baldeón

I have actually been planning for a little while now to pick up the trade of Monsters Unleashed because I had fun with the miniseries earlier this year and I have been craving more Elsa Bloodstone (as well as the entirety of the Nextwave crew) and this seems like one of the more interesting powers to come from the Inhuman collision.

.... Actually it’s completely stolen from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic and later adapted TV episode dedicated to Jack Kirby who had the power of creativity to draw and create anything he drew and also had a a penchant for creating monsters and different worlds and so on. So I mean. There’s that unavoidable fact. But Kei’s cute so I’d be willing to overlook it for the sake of seeing what Marvel plans on doing with this very wild and unruly power.

Dark Horse’s Usagi Yojimbo (1984-present) #162 Stan Sakai, Tom Luth

The conclusion of Usagi and Inspector Ishida’s investigation about the doctors’ murders has come and the hilarity of Kitsune and Kiyoko bumbling along with them and incidentally becoming crucial to the entire investigation does not lose its edge either.

Story: The conclusion of this particular caper is interesting mostly in how the framing by coincidence is not ultimately a linchpin to the story, having been solved almost immediately in the story’s first issue. The inventiveness of Sakai’s work, overall, is simple subterfuge which continues to make each new adventure feel unique and uncertain. In this instance, it would be in the assistance that Kitsune and Kiyoko end up providing by revealing the true murderer almost by accident.

That being said, as simple as individual stories are for Usagi Yojimbo, the complexity really rests in the margins for long time fans, and that shows most clearly in the way a quiet buildup of several arcs seem to flow together for coming to a head. Perhaps the most famous and arguably best all around example of this would be in “Grasscutter” and how years of storytelling and slow vignettes linking together culminated in one of the greatest comic storylines of all time. We seem to be getting something similar in the backgrounds of more recent adventures with this guild of assassins which Usagi has unknowingly crossed the path of and caused ire to several times at this point.

I’m excited to see where that story is taking us, and likewise interested in how little details, like Kiyoko successfully pickpocketing Inspector Ishida, will pay off down the road.

Lion Forge’s Voltron Legendary Defender Vol. 2 (2017) #1 Tim Hendrick, Mitch Iverson, Jung Gwan Yoo, Ji-in Choi

Egghhhhh. Are you ever really rooting for something against your own common sense and get bit in the butt regardless? I feel like that happens to me on an inconceivably high average and almost all of it can be blamed on the fact that for some reason I am still expecting comics to play fairly with me. If anything my standards should be lower by now. But, well, let’s see if I’m being a bit too harsh on Lion Forge’s second effort in making a Voltron comic.

Story: I would argue that one of the reasons that I had unreasonably high expectations for this comic is in part because the first comic produced by Lion Forge had actuallymanaged to not only be a fairly solid effort as a comic but managed to capture the spirit of the current Dreamworks Netflix series in a wa that was welcoming to fans new and old, and importantly of all ages. So I was hoping for more of the same with this comic project.

In more or less words... I did not exactly receive that. Where there was a solid read of the characterizations in the last comic, this issue showed a severely flattened to the point of parody version of the paladins, especially poor Hunk here who had the already obnoxious and unnecessary fat jokes and food jokes from the series amped up to the point of being his only characteristic in this comic. To the point that at one point he doesn’t even form a full sentence, just grabs a pie successfully from a training maze and says “Hunk win”. Which... I guess is somewhat better faring than the other paladins who didn’t even have dialogue that really fit them. Save for Pidge who was likewise flattened to “the smart one.”

The storyline itself of a new planet where Voltron is needed but the species they end up helping... they actually fail initially, I won’t lie, is a pretty solid premise for Voltron overall, and would be something I’d love to see the show tackle similarly, but the fairly generic wolf-furry aliens didn’t receive a whole lot of depth in this first issue.

Depth trended on being the biggest problem for this issue overall. There wasn’t an examination of the characters and their interactions, how they treated each other and how they tackled problems differently. The sort of things you’d want from an ensemble cast like Voltron. Which is surprising since again the first series by Lion Forge managed all that and was written on a much younger reading level at the same time. Each issue tackled exactly those very things -- individual characters, how they functioned in the group, and how they tackled obstacles differently to find a solution together. I would expect the same here but it didn’t seem to be on the menu.

Hopefully all of this will be addressed and fixed as the comic progresses, but as for now I’m apprehensively putting this series on my three issue trial run.

Art: The art was not a great improvement on the previous comic but it also wasn’t bad in the least. In fact I think the art popped very well, adjusting colors and textures about as well as you’d expect from a television show adaptation for kids. I do wish that the face models for the paladins would keep more consistent and overall there was a rushed feeling to the comic that seemed fairly unnecessary considering it’s the first issue.

Viz’s Yona of the Dawn (2009-present) Vol. 8 Mizuho Kusanagi

You know, I keep hearing over and over again from friends and trusted sources that Yona of the Dawn is a series that will continuously subvert my every expectation and make me continue guessing and yet every volume I really do manage to be caught off guard by something which the story chooses to do which is shockingly poignant and new even to its fairy tale epic adventure structure.

Story: So the Yellow Dragon joining the group was hilariously and purposefully anti-climactic but what we got as a result of that choice is the new direction for the series that ties directly into Yona’s own self-realization. She doesn’t simply want to rule and she doesn’t simply want to conquer. What she wants is to know her people and to save them from the crises that were overlooked by her father before her and by Su-Won now. She wants to take up arms to protect the entire country not just with the power of the loyal followers she has gained but with her own hands. She is something that neither of the kings -- her father or her cousin -- could have ever dreamed of being.

And then my expectations were really taken for a loop by us then in turn following Su-Won as he travels to the Earth Tribe and earns the respect and allegiance of the chieftan general there through a series of manipulations, tactical conceits, and ultimately quiet and subtle intimidation mostly by the fleeting moments in which he dropped his ditzy and well-meaning act to show his true intentions. But as fascinating as it was and as surprising as it was, for me at least, that this complete shift of POV for a few chapters actually managed to keep me on board when I’m not one to often fully appreciate the “villain’s side of things”, probably the most interesting part of any and all of this is actually how much tension is underlying Su-Won’s leadership. HIs appeal to the Fire and Earth Tribes is less in the leadership that he promotes and more in this current of possible warmongering that appeases the more warlike fractions of Kohka.

It’s all fascinating and offers a sense of danger in Yona’s new quest to help the people of fher country feel a new sense of danger, knowing that our group is ultimately pretty unprepared for helping parts of the country which would not be as receptive to their quest or the offer of Yona’s leadership.

That being said... the final chapter driving home Yona’s relationship with Hak and everyone’s strange obsession with protecting Yona but rejecting her attempts to grow her own strength and independence. Lik eI guess we’re just all going to overlook the way she killed the slave trader mob boss in teh previous volume. But beyond all of that, my real concern is just... I cannot stand the way Hak’s character is portrayed in his “over protectiveness” of Yona. It’s far from romantic to me to continuously have a character obsess over someone to the point of “jokingly” considering locking them away for the world to see.

It’s not the best issue of the series by far, but it has some great moments, especially for Yona.

Art: I actually do think that the further we’ve come in this comic, the more consistent and confident the at has gotten. There are still lots of soft tones and all the markings of a usual shoujo, but the real stand out this time around is that we’re beginning to see more and more the variation in ethnicities in the people of the country, which is honestly relieving even if for now the Earth Tribe, which drives that point home, consists mostly of Su-Won’s supporters and may carry with them some more unfortunate stereotypes being fed that I might not be aware of as a non-native to Japan.

So far as single issues this week are concerned there’s really no competition for Usagi Yojimbo in a regular week but especially not in a fairly light week. Yona is still a fantastic book and if there were other trades to compare it to I’d probably lavish on it more, but since we’re on singles I have to give this one to the unending quality that is Stan Sakai’s anthromorphic feudal epic.

And, once more, I am in a bit of a financial crunch for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being the medical bills I’m paying for my dog, Eve, who experienced a catastrophic dog fight and underwent surgery recently. On top of that, I have exactly a month and a half to pack up everything I own and move halfway across the country again which is not helping those financial crunches I mentioned before either.
