once upon a time, 很久很久以前
Once upon a time, there lived a magical boy who was lost far, far away from home… Wei Wuxian is perfectly ready to celebrate another mediocre birthday alone when a ten-year-old shows up on his doorstep claiming to be his son. This kid is convinced everyone in his town has been dragged away from their xianxia world and cursed to live as ordinary citizens in a mundane small town, and he's certain that Wei Wuxian is the key to saving them, his other dad, and their entire world. He sounds insane, but, well, Wei Wuxian likes him. Besides, what else can he do but follow him back home? (A Wangxian AU based on the show Once Upon a Time, no prior knowledge of said show necessary)

Preview under the cut
Once upon a time, there was a boy who believed he loved the world more than it could ever love him.
He would be proven very wrong.
~
Everyone loves the birthday boy.
They especially love him several shots in on Halloween night, wearing an outfit that’s little more than a couple scraps of fabric hastily sewn together in some approximation of a “Sexy Whatever”. Privately, Wei Wuxian calls it Dealer’s Choice, letting whoever he’s currently flirting with decide what it is.
It doesn’t matter; that’s never been the point of the night. Sure a birthday is meant to be spent celebrating, but that’s a bit harder to do when he doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with. It would be fine, as long as he could have as many free drinks as he could score and at least a passably decent fuck, he’d consider it a good night.
Really, when it comes down to it, it’s just another day. Halloween, yes, which makes it a moderately better one. But beyond that bit of fun that comes with picking up a pretty stranger at a bar, there really isn’t much else to look forward to. This is how Wei Wuxian expects to celebrate his birthday:
He’d saunter into how ever many establishments it takes until he finds a pretty enough stranger he can stand being around. The pretty stranger would look him up and down, dragging their eyes over his toned long legs and resting far too long at the slope between his narrow waist and wide hips. And for that one moment, he’d be the most important boy in the world.
He’d get a few free cheap drinks and eventually, they’d find their way to some back alley with its familiar stench of overripe garbage and piss. He’d let himself be pressed up against the brick wall, rough against his back; the perfect distraction from everything else. Then the pretty stranger would stick their tongue far enough down his throat so that he could pretend this day is just like any other.
In between sloppy kisses and sub-par groping attempts, they’d get his name wrong while he’d have already forgotten theirs. They’d mutter a “Happy Halloween, Birthday Boy” like so many one-night stands before them, and he’d giggle and laugh like it’s the very first time. It’s never difficult to plaster a patented smile and play pretend. Then he’d drop to his knees and let the world fall away.
Finally, after however many drinks and strangers it would take to make him forget, he’d stumble back to his basement studio with just enough awareness to take off his shoes before passing out on his secondhand stained mattress. His dreams would be fast and incomprehensible, a mosaic of imaginary maybes and a dream of a life he’d never had.
This is how he’s celebrated the last several years, and it’s how he expects to celebrate this year as well.
Because it’s not just Halloween and it’s not just his birthday. It’s the anniversary of his parents leaving their son behind in a dingy alley, wedged between a dumpster and a pile of soggy cardboard. Not even the barest hint of an afterthought, like maybe we shouldn’t leave this small defenseless child asleep and at the mercy of sewer rats?
But if the liquor is strong enough and the haze is just right he wouldn’t remember that until the next morning. That’s what the night is really for. Not a celebration or anything like that, but a desperate attempt at some peace away from this life of his.
Tonight will be his twenty-fifth birthday, and it might as well not be at all.
And then it will end, and November 1st will come around, and the world will keep turning like it always does.
But somehow, not one of those things goes according to plan. In fact, the universe has a completely different plan for him this year, it seems.

It doesn't need to be Jiang Cheng bashing or anything like that really, I just want Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian feels and bonding that are NOT Yunmeng Bro reconciliation or focused on Jiang Cheng. I won't say NO to some Jiang Cheng bashing, but I'd prefer the focus be on Jin Ling and his ACTUAL Best Jiujiu Wei Wuxian.

I just wanted to talk a little about these three dumbasses, and what a complete disaster trio they're displayed as during the Cloud Recesses days, and how it's meant to act as a foil for the people there were shortly to become.
Tumblr media
We all know the shenanigans they got up to, and the shortcomings of them all; the untamed genius, the emotionally stunted heir, the lazy fop; and despite this you're looking at the people who achieved the greatest feats of their generation.
One resurrected a sect from near-decimation to become one of the most powerful in the land in a single decade, one brought into being an entirely new type of cultivation that arguably won the Sunshot Campaign against the Wens, and the other schemed and achieved a stunningly elaborate revenge plot against the most powerful man in the cultivational world.
And every single one of them did it in total isolation. Strong, silent, and alone.
And what a foil for the venerated triad these stupid little boys are meant to be.
Three war heroes from the three most powerful sects of the time, the hope of a generation. Three men who couldn't change, couldn't bend, couldn't adapt themselves, and who ended in tragedy, ripped apart by their own sworn brotherhood.
And these three boys who started from tragedy, shouldered the burdens left to them and did what needed doing, entirely by themselves.
Did any of them grow as people? Absolutely not, MDZS is most definitely not a story about personal growth; its a story about war and politics, power and corruption, and people doing what they thought needed to be done, and all the reasons that might be so: personal codes (Wei Wuxian), duty and responsibility (Jiang Cheng) and revenge (Nie Huaisang).
Ironically those are motivating factors we see reflected in the 3zun too, but with very different outcomes.
Although that only stands to the end of the book, who knows what would happen in the future?
Was Wei Wuxian happy by the end of the book? Short term? Yes, Wangxian got the riding off into the sunset, but Wei Wuxian's trauma has trauma, and trauma doesn't just vanish for a happily ever after.
Nie Huaisang? Revenge is sweet, but after devoting yourself to that kind of darkness for so many years, after isolating yourself and eating, breathing, sleeping your revenge, what can possibly come next in life?
Jiang Cheng? Destroyed by the core reveal and struggling with the knowledge that he's in Wei Wuxian's debt, and shadow, once again. What did his own sacrifice mean if it just caused Wei Wuxian suffering in a different way? It would be no surprise if Jiang Cheng is feeling an immense amount of guilt, like he is the reason Wei Wuxian suffered as he did, because of the core loss. All those old insecurities rising back to the surface. He couldn't even save his Shixiong in the end.
Obviously it really isn't that simple in reality, but those kinds of emotions don't really care about that. Guilt isn't always logical, and we know how much Jiang Cheng loves Wei Wuxian.
It's fair to say none of the three have an easy immediate post canon future coming up.

I'M NOT LATE. (my brain says I am because I usually post at 12:30 my time but this is just my brain being silly).
This Wip Wednesday, wangxian have a talk about resentful energy :D I think I'm slowly approaching the end of this fic... Ever so slowly... I might do a poll about which other projects I'll work on once I'm done with that one :P
--
“Do you raise the dead often?” he eventually asked, thinking of the Burial Mounds and its eerie presences. “Saying I raise the dead is a bit of a stretch,” Wei Ying answered. “They’re already there, I only ask them for help and usually, this brings them peace too. A win-win situation all around!” “Controlling resentful energy is forbidden.” Wei Ying laughed, “To you humans, perhaps. Although honestly, I think you all just lack imagination! Resentful energy is just energy.” “Resentful energy hurts the body and the soul,” Lan Wangji objected. “Are you truly so different from us that you are spared from it?”
Wei Ying hummed in answer, seeming to ponder the question.
“Have you considered that you have it backwards? Resentful energy hurts the living, that much is true — you just have to look at all the cases of corpse poisoning to know that. But what if there’s a way to safely harness it? Would it matter then, if the person doing it was human or not?” “So what you are saying is…” “I’m not truly controlling the resentful energy, you know? Just… Think of it like someone directing a play. I ask the dead if they will help me and if they’re willing they do. Anyone could do it, even a non-cultivator.” “Is it not risky?” Again, Wei Ying laughed, “What is life without a little risk, Lan Zhan? Flying is risky, cultivating to the next stage is risky, night-hunting is risky! Any power has a risk attached to it. Of course there might a backlash if you’re careless or lose control because your emotions are unbalanced — but that’s true for many things. Think of qi deviation! What, do you think your ancestors never risked their lives or suffered injuries when they were paving the road you’re now walking on?”

💙 Regrets by antebunny

💙 Regrets
by antebunny
G, 37k, Wangxian
Summary: When Wei Wuxian finds himself alone in Nightless City, enemy of the entire world, Lan Wangji…accidentally stabs him. Then he and Lan Wangji open their eyes to find themselves on a rooftop four years in the past, with a chance to fix their biggest regrets.
Kay's comments: Ah, this one is definitely one of my favourite time-travel fix-its! It's wonderfully angsty, full of pain and yet, it's a fix-it and all works out in the end! In which Lan Wangji kills Wei Wuxian at Nightless City by accident (but Wei Wuxian, of course, doesn't know it's an accident) and then, both of them get thrown back into the past, to the Cloud Recesses lecture days and now they just have to deal with it. It being, Wei Wuxian still being in love with Lan Wangji, despite thinking that he murdered him and is now apparently working against him again and Lan Wangji having to live with having killed Wei Wuxian by accident and failing spectacularly at communicating. I just love how Wangxian are portrayed in this and I love our genius Wei Wuxian especially, who's not faulted for not understanding Lan Wangji's broody silences. Also, the way this story is written is simply stunning.
Excerpt: If he uses these and his current stack of fire prevention talismans, the Cloud Recesses doesn’t have to burn at all. He looks up, and Wei Ying is still there, hovering uncomfortably in the corner of the room. “I didn’t use demonic cultivation at all,” Wei Ying assures him, as if that was anywhere on Lan Wangji’s list of concerns when it came to Wei Ying. “They’re just regular…I mean, I invented them, but–I just thought you could use them, if Wen Xu tries to burn down the Library…again.” He trails off, looking more and more unnerved by Lan Wangji’s continued silent staring. Lan Wangji knows that people have a tendency to be unnerved by the way he can simply stare at them in a way his brother once described as “intense.” But Wei Ying has never been one of them. Wei Ying never stopped bothering him despite Lan Wangji’s most intense glares. Wei Ying never seemed unnerved, never got scared, never left him. It is, Lan Wangji thinks, a tragic reversal of the first time Wei Ying climbed in through his window. Back then, he wanted him to go, but Wei Ying wouldn’t leave. Now, Lan Wangji wants him to stay, but Wei Ying wants to leave. Wei Ying looks afraid of him now, and Lan Wangji can’t stand it, can barely stand to believe that he is. Which is why despite all the thoughts raging in his head, all the things he wants to beg and plead and cry and assure Wei Ying, all that comes out of his mouth is; “Thank you.”
pov wei wuxian, pov lan wangji, canon divergence, time travel fix-it, temporary character death, miscommunication, misunderstandings, post-bloodpath of nightless city, cloud recesses study arc, angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, getting together, arguing, demonic cultivation, blood and injury, @antebunny

“He doesn’t understand it,” Wei Wuxian says. “That you have to sweat out the heat.”
“Please do not talk to me about Hanguang-jun,” Sect Leader Jiang says.
The cicadas sing in the wide hot dark beyond this room, where it is humid and close and lit by two little oil lamps on either side of the table. The oil lamps are clay and shaped like leaping fish the size of a child’s cupped hand. On them is a glaze called Yunmeng blue; the alchemical recipe for it was one of the things Wei Wuxian might have found in the Lotus Pier treasure rooms, had he been looking for that in particular.
Jiang Cheng has not met Wei Wuxian’s eyes this entire conversation at this little table with its yours and mine oil lamps, arranged like a banquet. Wei Wuxian is eating a meal: sliced steamed fish cakes in oil, Hongshan caitai fried with chili and garlic, plain congee rather than what was first offered, which had been rich with the white meat of Yunmeng fish. Wei Wuxian knows how to delicately reintroduce this body to food.
Jiang Cheng is not eating, because the dark night outside is nearly false dawn. Outside this little room, Sect Leader Jiang’s cooks are hanging out fresh noodles to dry in the coming sun, whispering to each other in the dark as their hands do a job they have done a thousand times.
“Will you tell him about this,” Jiang Cheng says.
“I thought we weren’t talking about Hanguang-jun,” Wei Wuxian says. Then adds, “I don’t keep secrets from him,” to see if Jiang Cheng will have him thrown out of this room. He keeps eating, very slowly. The fish cakes and the vegetables are very spicy, Yunmeng spicy. It is burning his cracked lips.
Jiang Cheng does not say anything or move, so Wei Wuxian says, “What I was saying is that there are only a few things that Lan Zhan doesn’t get. He doesn’t know how to survive the heat, you know, not really. I always liked eating spicy food in the heat, right? To sweat it out. He likes bitter melon and mung beans.”
“You are supposed to eat those in summer.”
Wei Wuxian shrugs. “After three days in your dungeon I would’ve eaten mung beans till I couldn’t stand up,” he says agreeably, even though in fact he has spent three days alone in the dark and is calmly eating a single fish cake one tiny bite at a time. His hands only shake a little with the effort of not shoveling in food.
Jiang Cheng’s knuckles crack as his fists clench on the table. Wei Wuxian looks at him from under the lashes of a dead boy. “Well, I would,” he says mildly. “And it was all a misunderstanding, so I hope you have not disciplined the responsible parties. Of course your new disciples would not recognize little old me. Congratulations, of course, on the new disciples.” He means this very genuinely, though Jiang Cheng will take it as a cold joke. Wei Wuxian doesn’t know how to fix that. Maybe it won’t ever be fixed. Maybe this humid little room where once decades ago the walls were painted red with purple lattice designs, the murals flaking from the plaster in an old unburnt part of Lotus Pier, will be the closest they come.
Wei Wuxian takes another careful bite of food he finds easy to digest. Below this little room off the kitchens he can hear water moving among the stilts. The kitchens are built partly over water here, to reduce the constant threat of fire. Similarly, to get into the Lotus Pier treasure rooms you must swim under buildings whose bottom is flush with the water level, holding your breath. The currents are strange among the stilts; there are underwater barriers and pylons and it is very dark even in the daytime. Every movement stirs up muck from the bottom.
Wei Wuxian had wanted to see a treasure. So he had come to Yunmeng alone, while Lan Zhan was visiting with Head Cultivator Zewu-jun, doing brotherly things, probably having meals not so unlike this one with so many horrible things unsaid. Though honestly, Wei Wuxian cannot believe this current luck: that he got into the treasure room at all, that he was only imprisoned in the dark for three days before Sect Leader Jiang returned from a night hunt to find a trespasser held in a cellars built up on the hill. It was hard to think of Jiang Cheng who once kept puppies and now keeps men in holes in the hill, a line of them that they have always called the dungeons, where perhaps people who learned some of what the Yiling Laozu taught died in the belly of the dirt of Yunmeng.
Jiang Cheng, who once spent months with Lan Wangji, trying to claw Wei Wuxian out of the soil and horror of Yiling.
It had felt very different four days ago when he dived beneath the surface of the lake again, silent and small as a black cormorant. The water closed above him, warm and for a moment almost clear before the rich silt stirred. He had held his breath and swum the old path.
Wei Wuxian looks at the little oil lamps, deep blue glazed. “Yunmeng blue,” he says, tapping one with a fingernail. The ceramic sings. The little flame wavers in its broth of oil.
Jiang Cheng’s gaze sharpens. “That’s not what you were after,” he says, and then looks like he meant to say something else, a stronger accusation. The Lans would love to know the secret of Yunmeng blue. It happens in the hills, the alchemy of it, in the potters’ kilns that stretch two li from hilltop to valley like snaking dragons with bellies of fire. There, among the azaleas, mostly unbothered by the night hunts, the people of Yunmeng cook a blue deeper than the sky.
“That’s not what I was after,” Wei Wuxian agrees. “I was looking for the rubbing of the old Han Dynasty star map and I didn’t find it anyway. Your disciples are very thorough in responding to their alarm talismans. Very diligent. I’m sure I am very lucky Sect Leader Jiang returned tonight.”
“And you took nothing,” Jiang Cheng says.
“I took nothing.”
“Well,” Jiang Cheng says, and clears his throat. Wei Wuxian’s brother, once. “It was only three days this time.”
Wei Wuxian looks at him, long and black-eyed and birdlike in a stolen body. “Yes,” he agrees. “Only three days. I’ll sweat it out in no time.”
idk man idk! important to state that i love jiang cheng, this is just as much about jiang cheng. anyway. i cant shut up about the development of chemical blue dye/pigment. also i couldn’t get Wei Ying to admit even to the narrative that he touched the dead husk of a silk worm stored inexplicably in the treasure rooms of lotus pier and knew it was there for their sister, whose work and life is all unrecorded in the treasure rooms of Yunmeng. etc.

Summary:
Mo Xuanyu’s body burns in the sun. Among the sins that Wei Wuxian counts against him, this is one of the most grievous. Jiang Cheng looks at one of the most dangerous men alive, the scourge of the cultivation world, and the first thought that comes to mind weighs heavily on his heart. He looks like Jin Ling. --- Or: The Body doesn’t feel like it's Wei Wuxian’s, but his shidi would recognize him anywhere.
notes: this was my first foray into fic writing in over a decade so it's more angsty and experimental 🙈 the single line of suicide ideation is marked by /// at the beginning and end so it is skippable.
--
Mo Xuanyu burns in the sun. This is not uncommon, or surprising. The Jin, with their creamy complexions and delicate figures, are not known for laboring beneath it. Only sect leader Jin, the latest, is known for enjoying resting beneath its rays. His cheeks turn a warm pink in the heat and settle to a light brown by end of day.
But Mo Xuanyu- Mo Xuanyu burns in the sun. Pale skin turns red and peels as easily as an overripe persimmon. On long days outside, his body will itch and blister and lead to dizzy spells.
The first time Wei Wuxian faints in the heat he laughs as his husband applies a cooling salve to his neck and back. The second time, he sits so still in the cold spring that there are no ripples. His gaze stays glued to the opposite shore but does little else. His husband keeps a vigilant watch, afraid that he'll fall asleep and drown if he looks away for even a moment. Lan Zhan is always looking at him.
Even during those long years apart, the ghost of his image haunted him from his peripheral. He never could turn his head quickly enough to catch it. When he sought echoes of those features in the faces of strangers, they could never come close. There was a time he panicked and took this to mean he was forgetting him. In moments of desperate longing, he would return to familiar locations and overlay scenes from his memories to be see him again, even for just a moment.
To have him again, to be able to hold him and press kisses down his back and on his knuckles, to discover him a new, is like a prayer answered. It does not matter to him what form he takes, Wei Ying is Wei Ying.
Lan Zhan will love him anyway. All the more for returning to him
But- But Mo Xuanyu burns in the sun. Among the sins that Wei Wuxian counts against him, this is one of the most grievous.
He will always be grateful for his sacrifice, for the chance to see through his eyes the faces of those he loves so dearly.
Mo Xuanyu's too small hands fit neatly in A-Yuan's large ones.
They are just long enough to play a dizi with ease but not strong enough to train with a blade for hours.
This small body can be carried so easily by his husband, can bend in so many marvelous ways, yet takes all day to recover from a hangover. This body, in moments of pure unadulterated joy, does not instinctively turn to either side to share it. It does not seek that which it has never had.
This weak golden core allows him cultivate again but he cannot race across the skies. He cannot heal his own injuries. Wei Wuxian, the head disciple of Yunmeng Jiang, once shrugged off errant arrows from his cute shidis with nothing more than a laugh.
Wei Wuxian, husband and cultivation partner to the illustrious Hanguang Jun, cannot even heal irritated skin. That is a skill that is second nature to the disciples of Yunmeng Jiang, though hardly necessary for anyone used to summers at Lotus Pier.
The third time Wei Wuxian faints in the sun, they are on the way to a cultivation conference in the Unclean Realm.
His quiet demeanor goes beyond the time his husband spends circulating healing qi through his system. Wei Wuxian does not notice the stares from other sects, nor the way they whisper to one another about the sound of his silence. He does not notice the searching gaze from Yunmeng Jiang.
Sect Leader Jiang hates these conferences. If he wanted to hear people disagree and complain about every minor decision he would talk to the matchmakers again. The food is rarely to his tastes and the rooms are always too cold. The Jin are ostentatious, the Nie's too utilitarian, and Gusu Lan is much too quiet. People always tip toe around him as if he will start whipping people at any moment.
He is watched like a tiger in the middle of a market, the threat is implied by his mere presence. His reputation is hard earned.
When they had nothing but ashes and mud, when the vultures were circling above Yunmeng Jiang, and their back was to the flames, they had Sandu Sengshou. Rooster, pig, and snake. The war hero that no one must ever make the mistake to anger or offend. A man who could kill his brother, a demon in his own right, is capable of anything. The Yunmeng Jiang were protected by the reputation of a man known for his cruelty and quick whip, a man who was always ready to address any offense.
In the settling dust of the war, when Jiang Cheng had nothing else, when his life had gone up in flames around him, he had this: The last gifts from his parents, Sandu and Zidian. The last remnant of his sister, Jin Ling. And a dizi.
////
In those early years, the only thing that kept him alive was the obligation to his sect and to his nephew.
But on the nights where Jin Ling’s absence felt like a hollowing of the soul, when every time he closed his eyes he felt the discipline whip, when the shadows showed him the last memories of his family covered in their own blood, that obligation felt like a noose.
////
Yunmeng Jiang had Sandu Shengshou and little else. If you ask Sect Leader Jiang, he would say that didn't amount to much. If you asked a Jiang disciple, they would say that was all they needed.
Who else but Sect Leader Jiang embodied the the ways of Yumeng Jiang so clearly? Who else could have taken mud and ashes and raised a sect so strong? Who else would haven taken in street orphans and misfits and given them a name and a home? What other sect leader would have waded in the mud and labored along side them during the scarce years? Who else had the unrestrained strength of their rivers in their blood and lightning coursing through their veins? Who else could have done the impossible, if not a man birthed from the very waters he protects.
If you ask the elders whose lakes sit at the edge of Lotus Pier, those who remember a time before the ashes when laughter would echo across the water, they would tell you this: The people of Yunmeng Jiang do not love lightly.
Whether it be people or places, once that seed is planted in their hearts, you’ll have an easier time drinking the river than uprooting it.
What could be considered impossible in the face of such devotion? That is the Yunmeng Jiang way.
And that is a son of the Yunmeng Jiang.
The terror of one land is a hero at home. When is a monster not a monster?
When you are the reason it has become so mangled.
The people of Yunmeng Jiang understand this better than most for they are the only ones who survived the war with two terrors to their name.
But the passage of time softens the blows of war. Yunmeng Jiang, once isolated as a consequence of having nothing to offer, is self sufficient in a way no other sect can claim. For this reason, there is always someone trying to corner sect leader Jiang at these conferences. There is always a trade contract to be negotiated or a someone’s cousin or disciple to meet. For reasons sect leader Jiang can’t quite parse, the smaller sects have stopped throwing every woman of marrying age at him and have started introducing him to cultivators of various talents and renown. He is mildly offended at the implication that he would want their castoffs when his own disciples are so highly skilled.
His second in command has perfected the art of diversion in these instances and Jiang Cheng has become intimately familiar with the isolated corners of every sect. So when Hanguang Jun’s husband disappears and misses dinner, he has some ideas of where to look. Not that he is searching for him or anything, but if anyone were to ask him, there are directions he could point to. Such as the training ground behind the stables. It just so happens that his post dinner walk has taken him in that direction.
The food Nie Huaisang provided was too rich and made such a stroll necessary. It has nothing to do with Jin Ling sneaking away with his friends or Wei Wuxian’s absence. This is a digestive walk, practically medically mandated for a cultivator that cares about being in peak condition.
Danger lurks around every corner, it would be embarrassing to perform poorly in a battle simply because food didn’t sit well in his stomach. He is in the middle of creating a new nightly regimen to torment-train his newer disciples with when he comes across Wei Wuxian
Jiang Cheng looks at one of the most dangerous men alive, the scourge of the cultivation world, and the first thought that comes to mind weighs heavily on his heart. He looks like Jin Ling.
Here is the thing about about the Yunmeng Jiang, a trait every child of the lake shares: they will always seek comfort in water. When a Jiang disciple marries out or leaves the sect, it is not uncommon to find them staring longingly into ponds or streams.
When Jin Ling was young and had to return to Carp Tower after months spent in Lotus Pier, his disappearance would often cause a havoc among his caretakers. More often than not, he could be found wading in the lotus pond his father built or sitting at its edge.
Once, when he was still a toddler and throwing a tantrum about being left behind, Jiang Cheng found him asleep in the stables next to the horse's trough. The sight was so achingly sweet that he took the time to commit it to memory before carrying him away.
If he had possessed any artistic talent, he would have painted a portrait to be able to look back on it across the years.
As Jin Ling's chubby little hands grasped against his robe, sleeves still wet from the horse's water, he felt like he could finally breathe. For the first time in years, something slotted into place, and It took a moment to realize what it was.
Relief.
When Jin Ling finally leaves him, or when Jiang Cheng dies, whichever comes first, he will still have the comfort of water. Jiang Cheng has failed in so many things, has let countless of people down, but he was able to give him this. This one thing that no one can take that from him. This intrinsically Jiang thing.
It had been an old fear, he wasn't sure that Jin Ling would take to it in the same way, the Jin are different after all. They don't share their ways.
He will never forget his shijie's shamefaced confession right before his naming day. Frantically whispered in a rare moment they had stolen away, Jin Ling bundled in her arms. "A-Cheng, they wouldn't- the wouldn't let me do it. He wasn't born in the water." It had stunned him into silence.
It didn't seem feasible that any child of Jiang Yanli wouldn't be born swimming. Even his own mother, raised in the mountains where it is too cold to swim, made certain to have water births. When Wei Ying came to them as a half starved thing, he couldn't swim but would still float on his back for hours until he learned.
Raised alongside the heirs of Yunmeng Jiang, it wasn't long before he was swimming as strongly as any of them. Countless days were spent under the sun for hours, until their skinned pruned up and other tasks called them away. The happiest moments of Jiang Cheng's life were spent in the waters of Lotus Pier.
His father had taught him how to swim, and Jiang Cheng had taught Wei Ying.
It should have been Jiang Yanli who taught her son how to dive off a dock without making a splash, and go for lengths without breaking the surface.
Instead, he got Jiang Cheng.
He had taught countless shidis how to swim, of course, it wasn't difficult.
But could a man so devoid of affection teach Jin Ling to find safety and security in the currents. To love them? He wasn't sure. It felt like it would be the final betrayal of his family's memories if he failed in this. And yet, Jin Ling learned to swim before he learned to walk. Running around Lotus Pier in those ridiculous golden outfits that made him stick out like a sore thumb, his shijie's beautiful little boy was every bit as Yungmeng Jiang as any of them.
And beneath the moonlight, sitting next to what passes for a pond in the Unclean Realm, Wei Wuxian looks like Jin Ling.
His face holds the same delicate softness that Jin Zixuan's did, his eye brows furrow similarly to Jin Guanyao's when someone arrived with an unexpected guest.
It’ss Barely noticeable, but he can see that at some point, Mo Xuanyu had broken his nose.
It's in a different spot from the break in his memories. During their second Dragon Boat Festival together, before the development of their golden cores, Wei Ying had stolen the poisonous paper animals from Jiang Cheng's wrist and tripped in his attempt to get away. It was ugly. He had smashed his face into a food stall run by their shixiong's sisters and painted his festival robes red. Jiang Cheng kept an arm around him as their shixiong's elder sister flagged someone down to take them back home. In an attempt to calm a crying Wei Ying, the younger of the sisters gave them three sticks of wrapped tanghulu that Jiang Cheng ended up tucking into his sleeves for later. Back then, food always cheered Wei Ying up.
By the time his shixiong found them, with their shijie trailing behind, his crying had deescalated to just hiccups. Thinking back on it, he remembers Wei Ying being more upset about the sullied robes than from the actual pain.
Things between them right now...they're not good. They're also not horrible. But the bar is very, very low. But Wei Wuxian has been quiet all day.
He hasn't moved from where he is sitting with his knees pulled next to his chin and arms wrapped around his shoulders. There's no indication that he's heard Jiang Cheng approach, but at his age, he knows better. He should leave.
He should turn around and tell one of his disciples to go tell Jin Ling to tell The Boy to have Hanguang Jun come collect his husband. But- Right now, sitting alone in the Unclean Realm, Wei Wuxian looks like Jin Ling when he wants to cry.
And he has never been able to walk away from his nephew when he's worn that expression. It seems he's just as defenseless to it when his- when Wei Wuxian wears it as well.
It's the same face, that's all.
Wordlessly, he shuffles over and sits a little more than an arms length away. He doesn't look over, instead choosing to stare out into the pond and pretend like he isn't hyper aware of the weight of his qiankun pouch.
It's a cloudy night, and in the time that they sit there in silence, the light of the moon is blocked and darkness blankets over them. The sound of the grasshoppers and the leaves shifting in the wind is almost meditative. He startles when Wei Wuxian's voice breaks the peace.
"Mo Xuanyu burns in the sun." It's not what he expected. He can't say with any definitive confidence what he thought Wei Wuxian would say, but it's not that. He grunts in the affirmative.
"The peacock was a tomato during those first few summers."
Before he formed his golden core and was suddenly too good to be trailing after their sister. Somehow, this was a misstep, Wei Wuxian grip on himself tightens. This too, is familiar. He used to hold himself so fiercely that he would leave bruises on his arms.
Concerned, Jiang Cheng had asked his shijie why he did that, couldn't he see he was hurting himself?
Back then, it felt like she had all the answers. Jiang Cheng knows now, she was just child trying to fill in the gaps in their lives.
She brought him into a hug with one hand and ran her hand through his hair with the other. He remembers that the look on her face was so sad.
"A-Cheng, A-Ying was alone for a very long time. He didn't have anyone to hold him or to hug him when he was sad or scared. So he holds himself." And that was the saddest thing Jiang Cheng had ever heard. And he had just lost his dogs. But the solution felt simple.
"So we have to hold him then, right?"
She pressed a kiss to his forehead and he felt her nod against him. Shijie never wanted to let them see her cry. Overnight, they implemented a secret rule. If Wei Ying was sad, you had to hold him. If he was happy, you had to hold him too.
They still shared a room back then, so when he had nightmares, Jiang Cheng would make his way over to his bed and hug him until he stopped shaking. He had nightmares a lot. More often than not, Jiang Cheng would wake up in the wrong bed.
But the bruises disappeared.
He's so wrapped up in his own head that he almost misses the choked whisper that comes next. What he hears is so preposterous that he almost asks Wei Wuxian to repeat himself.
"What if- this body- Mo Xuanyu- what if-" he rushes the last part, as if the somehow saying it all in one breath might keep it from being true. "-what if it can't swim?" It, not I.
Something separate from himself. Something not Wei Wuxian. And Jiang Cheng- He can't accept that.
He can't. Because that would imply- That would mean- He can't even finish the thought.
He kept a dizi for over a decade to avoid thinking that.
Here are some objective truths of the world: The sun will rise every day. The seasons will change. Sect leader Jiang loves his nephew. Wei Ying swims.
In the event that any of these stop being true, it's a sign of something calamitous to come. Something unspeakable.
It takes all his will power to keep looking straight ahead. There's only one answer here. "Then learn." Wei Wuxian's bark of laughter catches even him by suprise. Of course, of course. Jiang Cheng makes it sound so easy, so simple. He's always been like this, no time for frivolities, cutting straight to the point.
He nearly drove their teachers mad insisting that it was senseless to use so many metaphors, waste so many lines, just to say "Let's get married," all the while blushing and stammering at the mere thought of it. Even now, Jiang Cheng is still Jiang Cheng.
It's a comforting thought. Wei Wuxian woke up in a different world, in a body that often feels stretched too tight, too misaligned. But Jiang Cheng is Jiang Cheng. It makes his heart hurt. He misses him. From his perspective, it wasn't that long ago that he had his shidi.
It wasn't that long ago, that shijie- That- It hasn't been that long, that's all. It's just- Sometimes, when he's alone, it feels like a chasm is opening up in his chest. Like he is still lying on that mountain with Wen Qing's hands re-arranging him and hollowing him out. And if he stops to think about it, to truly analyze what any of it means, he'll start screaming and never stop.
He can't do that. It would scare Lan Zhan. He'd be sad.
Lan Zhan has spent enough of his life being sad about Wei Wuxian. He won't add to it. And this thing going on with- with the body. He wouldn't understand it. Lan Zhan loves Wei Ying so much, he could have been reborn as Little Apple and Lan Zhan wouldn't love him any less. And A-Yuan, oh his little A-Yuan, his little radish. The only evidence that he still had a heart, at the end of it all.
If anyone had ever bothered to ask, he would have sworn it stopped beating alongside his shijie's. After that night, he felt more like one of his own corpse puppets than an actual person. Maybe that was when he died. And this thing that he is now- It came back wrong.
Maybe it's not Wei Wuxian. How would they know? How could they know? Lan Zhan, his A-Yuan, they have now spent more time with the body than they ever had with Wei Wuxian. In another 20 years, this is how they'll remember him.
In a body that burns in the sun.
Heat starts to pool behind his- the- Mo Xuanyu's eyes. It's a strange sensation. Back then, after becoming part of the Jiang, he didn't cry often. The body cries so much. Is this him? Or is it the final vestiges of Mo Xuanyu mourning his death? He doesn't know.
How would he know? The silence has stretched long enough, Jiang Cheng can hear Wei Wuxian's breathing pick up next to him. Whatever this is, it has him treading on unsteady ground.
He's rattled by it.
If Jiang Cheng closes his eyes, he can still picture that little boy in the bed across the room, trying to keep silent, shaking in the night. Shijie, does the rule still apply after death? Yours and his? Does his husband know how often Wei Wuxian needs to be held?
How would he know? Only the Jiang saw what he was like before the rule had been implemented and Wei Wuxian has been operating at a deficit of affection for the majority of his life. Surely death has only amplified it.
In this moment, little more than an arm length away, he has never felt further from Wei Ying. The distance feels insurmountable, impossible even.
Here are some objective truths of the world:
Sandu Shengshou is a war hero.
Jiang Cheng is a coward.
Jiang Cheng loves his nephew.
Wei Ying is Wei Ying.
Here is the thing about the Yunmeng Jiang:
They do not love lightly.
Whether it be people or places, once that seed is planted in their hearts, you’ll have an easier time drinking the river than uprooting it.
What could be considered impossible in the face of such devotion?
That is the Yunmeng Jiang way.
And Jiang Cheng is a son of the Yunmeng Jiang.
Jiang Cheng steels himself with a breath. He is a coward, a man devoid of affection, but he has experience building something from mud and ashes. A familiar shudder next him has him turning his head on instinct, seeking what always used to be there. His shixiong.
The clouds above them finally clear and there, under the moonlight in the Unclean Realm, is Wei Ying. The sight of him makes his heart hurt. Jiang Cheng is struck by the realization that he misses him.
He missed him so much. It doesn't feel like he'll ever stop missing him.
This epiphany gives him the courage needed to finally speak the words he's been desperate to say since that night hunt on Dafan Mountain and again that time at inn.
"Wei Ying," his voice cracks and his shixiong, conditioned by a lifetime of taking care of his shidi, immediately turns to face him at the first sign of distress.
"Come to Lotus Pier. Come home."
He swallows back a sob because the next part is important, he needs to get it out before he loses his courage. Jiang Cheng can, at the very least, give him back this part of himself. Maybe he's the only person who can.
"I'll teach you. If you can't, I'll teach you. Again."
The words haven't left his mouth before Wei Ying is scrambling over to wrap his arms around him.
And oh.
Oh. Jiang Cheng has always been the stupider of the two. How could he have forgotten? How could he have missed something so important?
Jiang Cheng always held Jin Ling when he was sad. He made sure to hold him when he was happy too. Though he threatens to break his legs, he has never once hit him. Jin Ling has never feared his touch nor wanted for it.
Jiang Cheng could count on one hand how many times Jiang Fengmian had held him and still have fingers left over. His mother had done it significantly more often, though she was unaccustomed to such easy affection. But if he initiated, she always reciprocated. Such tender physicality, the gentleness of it, just wasn't the way of the Meiyan Yu. But his siblings? There aren’t enough lotus pods in all the piers to calculate how often they held him.
But no one who knew that had been alive to remind him.
Until now. The Twin Prides of Yunmeng had always been mirror images, more alike than one would initially think. And in many ways, they never stopped being those boys sharing a bed in the dark. They stay holding each other until they both stop shaking. Wei Ying is the first to pull away, he croaks out an "Okay. Okay." before taking another moment to compose himself. He has to look away before he starts back up again. Otherwise, they'll be here all night and there is still a discussion conference going on. He never thought he would have this. After Guanyin Temple it had felt impossible. He should have known better.
This is Jiang Cheng, after all.
Speaking of, there was one thing he's been dying to ask.
"Back then, on the mountain and in the inn, how did you know?" the It was me goes unsaid.
When he had really sat down to think about it, Jiang Cheng only spent a handful of moments with him before immediately clocking his identity.
He hears a familiar snort of disbelief behind him, maybe wetter than it would normally be, and a rustling of fabric. Wei Wuxian, still sitting on the grass, peeks over his shoulder to look up at his shidi. Jiang Cheng is giving him that lopsided smile that Madam Yu always said would make his face stick like that.
His answer is so simple, so Jiang Cheng, he doesn't know what he expected. "In what life wouldn't I know you? You move like my brother." Wei Wuxian's jaw hangs open as he watches Jiang Cheng retreat into the night. When he finally recovers from the shock and looks down, there is a bao wrapped in fabric next to a clarity bell catching the moonlight. Here is the thing about the Yunmeng Jiang, an objective truth of the world: The waters will always welcome them home.

I don't think LXC hated WWX either. But people argue he stopped him from confessing his love for LWJ at the temple. I think he might have been a little embarrassed by WWXs confession and that is why he said it.
Do you think he quietly shipped them in WWXs first life?
People have rather a lot to say about Lan Xichen at the guanyin temple, much of it at this point regurgitated nonsense that completely fails to understand what is going on there because he is currently fandom's favorite villain now that bashing Jiang Yanli has lost its flavor. I'm sure eventually they'll get bored once people realize that the Lan Xichen they're talking about does not actually exist and move onto someone else who apparently is not morally perfect enough for this somehow black and white victim vs villain story.
But enough salt. I am here to be a balanced blog which means I'm going to talk about what he likely feels based on the text we are given.
I do think he is somewhat mortified by Wei Wuxian screaming that he wanted to have sex with Lan Wangji, it is not exactly the sort of thing you can prepare yourself to hear. In addition, while I am all right making somewhat dirty jokes with my family and alluding to the fact that I have a sex life, talking about it frankly in front of people is rather further than I or they would want me to go, which is where Wei Wuxian is starting.
Also note that Wei Wuxian is not actually stopped, they just go in out of the rain, Jin Ling and Lan Xichen give them what privacy they can (people who want to insist that they're being homophobic here can go eat rotten eggs, they are all being held hostage in an open temple with nowhere to go, what else are they supposed to do to convey that Wangxian can have their moment to talk?) and then Wei Wuxian goes right back to telling Lan Wangji that he loves him.
As for your second question, do I think he quietly shipped them in the background? Also nope. He had no idea what was going on. No one did. He only found out when Lan Wangji turned his sword on his own clanmates to protect Wei Wuxian, when Lan Wangji no longer cared about anyone knowing and was willing to kill to keep Wei Wuxian alive.
There is a very strong belief in the fandom that someone must have known that Wangxian had feelings for each other in Wei Wuxian's first life. I see it given to Jiang Yanli, I see it given to Wen Qing, I see it given to Lan Xichen. I'm not sure where it comes from. Even in CQL where they are supposedly good friends in their first life, people still seem to think that they don't actually get along depending on the episode. It is a wholly fanon created thing.
I made a post once calling the juniors the first people to actually see Wangxian as a couple in the novel and my opinion will not budge on that. Everyone assumed something about their feelings that did not match with reality, one of the many themes of assumptions about people's relationships and characters not matching up with reality in the book. No one else knew earlier on that their feelings were reciprocated or in most cases even existed, no one quietly shipped them in the background. Were there no resurrection, Lan Wangji would have likely been assumed to be above relationships with no interests because the one person he ever wanted was dead and gone.
Lan Xichen was not being homophobic or trying to stop Wei Wuxian from confessing in the temple. He was also not shipping Wangxian. He was doing what he consistently does throughout the novel, trying to look out for his little brother, because above all else, he will always choose Lan Wangji first.
Thanks for the ask!

Preview:
It had been a year. A whole year since parting ways with Wei Wuxian. But this time, he had the comfort of knowing that Wei Wuxian was alive and free. His name cleared, his ghosts dispelled, his heart beating once more. Now, as Lan Wangji strolled on the path that had taken Wei Wuxian away from him a year ago, the last thing he expected was that the same path would lead to Wei Wuxian again. The sound of a familiar melody wafted over the crisp evening breeze and circled Lan Wangji's heart and mind and body. It was their song. Theirs. Wei Wuxian and his. The only thread that still bound his zhiji to him. When Wei Wuxian's form appeared in the distance, Lan Wangji's heart attempted to burst out of his chest and rush to Wei Wuxian. With slow, unsteady steps, Lan Wangji approached Wei Wuxian as he stared over the edge of the cliff and played the song. "Wei Ying," Lan Wangji said reverently, speaking the name after a year, letting its sound blend with the music. Wei Wuxian stopped playing immediately and turned around painfully slowly. When their eyes met, Wei Wuxian's face morphed from surprise to disbelief to a teary smile. Lan Wangji smiled back, it was all he could do to resist embracing the man. "Lan Zhan," Wei Wuxian's watery eyes shone as they gently held Lan Wangji's reflection. "You're visiting Gusu?" Lan Wangji hoped against hope. "I…" there was a hesitation in Wei Wuxian's voice. Lan Wangji waited patiently. "I came to visit you," Wei Ying smiled tiredly and confessed. Lan Wangji's heart soared. It must have shown on his face, for Wei Wuxian's eyes softened and his smile brightened. "I'm glad," Lan Wangji nodded and took Xiao Pinguo's reins.

2. Hi!I have been looking for this fic for forever and keep trying to back through tags and posts, but am having no luck! I know I read it from your tumble quite a long time ago, when I was first getting into reading in the fandom and going through the blog to find recs. It’s set before WWX comes back, and it is LWJ and JC getting in some kind of fight during a cultivation world conference or something?
I am 98% sure it was LSZ point of view, and what I remember most clearly is that JC makes some kind of comment and all of a sudden LWJ just straight up decks him or something along those lines? I remember that LSZ (and everyone else) was so shocked that LWJ would do something like that no one really knows how to react. Any help would be greatly appreciated! This blog is amazing and I cannot tell you how many wonderful fics I have found and loved because of it!

3. Hi, I'm looking for a fic whereby Wèi Wúxiàn and Jīang Chéng slowly reconcile and towards the end Wèi Wúxiàn was injured. They had a healer in training under an older Jīang healer which turns out to be Wen Qing. In the end there was a golden core transfer from Jīang Chéng to Wèi Wúxiàn and it becomes a shared golden core.

5. Heyo! If it's not too much trouble, I'm hoping the lovely mods and your detectives will be able to find two fics for me.
A) There's a part where WWX reminds LWJ of a point during the Sunshot Campaign where they all had to camp put in a brothel. LXC was fairly embarrassed, but NMJ pointed out there were no prostitutes there at the time (think the roof had come down or something).
B) At one point WWX remembers how as a child he once put a cushion up his shirt pretending to be pregnant and got told off by his teacher. At home Yu Ziyuan said something like 'Why can't Wei Ying be a mom?' and let he and Yanli play house. Jiang Fengmian also showed little WWX how to fold a blanket as a baby sling. Sorry for the rambling, and thank you all in advance!

7. Hallo, I'm trying to find a fic and would be grateful for your help! It's simalar to: The Ribbon Incident (and how to fix it) by esk95, WWX finds out about the meaning of the forehead ribbon after he tore it off at the archery competition. The difference is that it wasn't LXC to tell him about the meaning, I can't exactly really remember who it was but I think it was either JYL or JC and he was at Lotus Pier when he foud out. I also remeber he was playing/swimming at the lake with his shidis/JC when this happened. Thank you!

9. You guys do such wonderful work finding fics!
Thank you for everything you do!I’m looking for a fic I read that was complete by spring 2020. It was a longer fic, modern AU, in which wwx baked things and gifted them to people as part of his social media presence and to brighten people’s days. I think he got hired to teach either LXC or JGY how to bake so that they could bake something for the other one in order to ask him out? It also might have been a coffee shop au in which Lotus Pier was a coffee shop and the Wens were trying to buy it?
Thank you very much for everything you do!

And I guess they were betrothed so Can anyone please help? I lost it when I was reading.

12. I'm looking for a fic I read years ago where LWJ accidentally time travels back to student days and is trying to figure out what to do about the upcoming series of disasters. LXC takes one look at him and goes: what happened? it was that bad? how could something that bad have happened without me knowing about it too? was it time travel? it must have been time travel. At least we now know what needs to be fixed! And meanwhile LWJ hasn't said anything at all and LXC is just going off his unintentional micro expressions. @marbleglove

13. There is a fic where the spirit/ghost/memories of one of the Lan sect founders possess each sect leader in turn through a ritual, and Lan Qiren and Lan Wanji figure it out because they don't want to lose Lan Xichen. 14. Need help. Literally the only thing I can remember is Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian in a hot spring. 16. Hi! I hope you are doing well :) I would like to ask for your help finding a story, I think you recommended it before, but don't remember enough to find it myself (could also be I read it on twt). It was a modern au, I just remember WWX was in love with LWJ since school, he even wrote a letter and hid it in one of LWJ's books, because he always checked what WWX gave hom back, but not that time, he actually never finds the letter. I think they meet in college as roomates. Do you know it?

18. I've been trying to find this wangxian (I'm pretty sure it was) where WWX for one reason or another had some sort of chronic pain, (i think it was from zidian), and hed have many flare-ups of pain and JYL and JC would help and take care of him.
I just remember this specific scene where theyre camping outside Cloud Recesses after being denied entry, and JYL and JC are worried about WWX's pain from sleeping outside overnight, and help him when he almost can't move from pain in the morning.
I would really appreciate your help in finding it! @shieldherostuffs

dissecting my mdzs playlist
It is very small cause I don't go out of my way to find songs to associate with characters they come to me while I'm chilling. I have a bit to say and like also lyrics to force ya'll to read.
Things to Do - Alex G. I associate this song largely with Lan Xichen and post canon in particular. This lyric in particular drives me insane /pos "The calculator will make the same mistakes Yeah, I see it in its face" The lyrics in gen I think just really hit the spot for Lan Xichen.
I Wait for You - Alex G. Wangxian!!! More specifically Lan Wangji, it's just so them i encourage you to look at the lyrics, but of course the classic chorus "It's nothing new I wait for you" and the beginning " Selling pills to the girls when they cross the block I told him he should quit that sketchy scene He said, "Nothing compares to the fever dream" ughughugh *explodes*
Lacy - Olivia Rodrigo. Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian yes easily chengxian too me cause of how kinda homoerotic the song is if you ask me. I wish I could just copy and paste all the lyrics here cause the whole song fits them so fucking well!!! I think the 2nd verse just hits the chengxian vibes the most "Smart sexy Lacy, I'm losing it lately I feel your compliments like bullets on skin Dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnate Well, aren't you the greatest thing to ever exist?" The 2nd chorus also hits so hard but theres one more i want to add that just hits harder than the chorus, the final verse is just *chef's kiss* "Lacy, oh, Lacy, it's like you're out to get me You poison every little thing that I do Lacy, oh, Lacy, I just loathe you lately And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you" It's about the envy and its delicious
Can't Catch Me Now - Olivia Rodrigo. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, yes my brain also reads this with a chengxian vibe. I love the idea that through out those 13 years that Wei Wuxian's memory bitterly haunted Jiang Cheng, there's something awful about the idea of Jiang Cheng having an intense freak out because well, Wei Wuxian is gone, he's dead. " Bet you thought I'd never do it Thought it'd go over my head I bet you figured I'd pass with the winter Be somethin' easy to forget Oh, you think I'm gone 'cause I left" This verse in particular itches my brain just right and then of course the chorus as well drives me insane, when i tell you, you can imagine Jiang Cheng so breaking down to this song and it drives me insane But I'm in the trees, "I'm in the breeze My footsteps on the ground You'll see my face in every place But you can't catch me now Through wading grass, the months will pass You'll feel it all around I'm here, I'm there, I'm everywhere"
The Night We Met - Lord Huron. Lan Wangji, wangxian if you will. Honestly I shouldn't copy and paste another whole damn song, BUT this damn line "I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you" I'm just gonna explode again, yall should totally listen to the whole song or like read all the lyrics cause god fucking damn.
Wait for It - Hamilton musical. Jiang Cheng, Once again fellasI shoudn't copy and paste a whole 'nother song but fuuuuuck, admittedly I had forgotten how Jiang Cheng this song is until I'm listening to it to write this. "When they died they left no instructions Just a legacy to protect" look at me and tell me that doesn't have the vibes of the fall of Lotus Pier! Also the damn chorus god that just fits the vibe of of mdzs as a whole in my brain "Death doesn't discriminate Between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep living anyway"... Mdzs is so just, there's a lot of grey area to me but god. I seriously cant post the whole damn lyrics but towards the end it get's very Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian and just ugh im going insane.
Night Shift - Lucy Dacus. Jiang Cheng, chengxian. Let me just copy and paste the whole lyrics again. This verse in particular "Am I a masochist, resisting urges to punch you in the teeth Call you a bitch and leave? Why did I come here? To sit and watch you stare at your feet? What was the plan? Absolve your guilt and shake hands?" and this one " Now bite your tongue, it's too dangerous to fall so young Take back what you said Can't lose what you never had" and of course the final verses(?) " You got a 9 to 5, so I'll take the night shift And I'll never see you again if I can help it In five years I hope the songs feel like covers Dedicated to new lovers" The way this verse is just repeated and builds up in sound and just yall, I'm screaming and crying just thinking about the vibes in my head that I just cant word! The whole "never seeing you again if I can help it" what if I was evil y'all?
True Blue - boygenius. Wei Wuxian. God I honestly don't know at this point what lyric made me pin point this as a song for him. It just definitely feels it can be about him you know. "When you don't know who you are, you fuck around and find out When you called me from the train, water freezing in your eyes You were happy and I wasn't surprised" Wei Wuxian always figures it out, god just yeah and the chorus about how it feels good to be known and you cant hide from them like you hide from yourself? uuuuh Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng! and "You've never done me wrong Except for that one time that we don't talk about Because it doesn't matter anymore Who won the fight? I don't know, we're not keeping score" I am so evil about them god, And Wei Wuxian's love being tried and just waaaaah im gonna explode
Stay Down - boygenius. Wei Wuxian. When I tel you there's a verse that is so Wei Wuxian and it make's me so damn evil, The song as a whole fits him so well but this verse is just so him especially post sunshot campaign me thinks. " So, would you teach me? I'm the villain, aren't I? Aren't I the one constantly repenting for a difficult mind? Push me down into the water like a sinner Hold me under and I'll never come up again" God try and tell me that it doesn't suit him, go on. I just sdlfhlskxfjlksdfj
Afraid of Heights - boygenius. Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao. Xiyao. Thought this had vibes, friend said that it fits xiyao, I agree. the reverse of risking and not risking just sorta fit. I personally imagine the lyrics being from Lan Xichen's perspective. I think the last two verses in particular really hit but its really the last one that make's make think of them " You called me a crybaby But you're the one who got teary Telling me what you believe How we're stuck in entropy How it hurts to hope Oh, it hurts to hope for more Oh, it hurts to hope the future Will be better than before"

Do you also think that Su She's feelings for A-Yao were also more romantic than platonic? I felt like reading it between the lines. With XiYao I was not that obviously for me till I met you.
The magic incense burner in the shape of an elephant was previously in A-Yao's secret room. I found it so striking that WWX, as a paper man, noticed this apparently unimportant object while fleeing the room, that I marked the page and kept it in mind.
With that in mind, do you think Xichen used this item and in his confusion left it in the Lan sect library so Wangxian find it?
After realizing through you that XiYao are canon, which makes me happy beyond words, because A-Yao deserves the world and Xichen is the best boy, I have the theory that A-Yao used this incense burner to meet with Xichen in his dreams earlier.
Do you also think, that A-Yao was loyal to QS, even if they never lived as a married couple and that Xichen doesn't wanted to be the reason to tempt A-Yao to adultery, but that the meeting of A-Yao and Xichen in dreams thanks to the incense burner was for both something they could deal with?
Meanwhile, I understand that one can't believe everything the author says because she tends to joke. In the MDZS Wiki it is said that she has confirmed that JGY and NMJ fought in the coffin for 100 years. That's what makes me saddest. I prefer your theory that Xichen saves A-Yao's soul. Maybe JGY and NMJ really fought each other for 100 years, because there was no other solution, but I depend on the hope, that after that their souls were saved and didn't disappear.
Do you also think that Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu were friends, even though it wasn't mentioned, not even once? I don't find WWX in Yi city too conspicuous. Su She was there too and doesn't seem to have reported JGY that WWX was reviewed. So Xue Yang most have known MXY + how should he know that his spiritual power was low, to make profit out of it when he attacked WWX? XY and MXY were the same age, both close to JGY and both demonic cultivators. Maybe I overanalyse, but when XY talked with WWX he doesn't seemed to me like a big fan who meets his idol. Of course because he was still mourning XXC and wanted him desperately back, but I guess maybe too because he get to know that a friend of his youth was dead.
I'm convinced that Song Lan will safe XXC's and A-Qing's souls. Maybe it's absurd, but I like the dream that they will get to understand that XY wasn't a monster and make up with him. I have that idea from a great fanart artist. Do you think that's pure wish thinking?
Thank you in forwards for your answers and sorry that it get longer than planned.
I'd honestly prefer if each subject was asked in its own individual post, but as it is, I will try to be methodical about this and answer each, one at a time.
Of course, this is all prefaced with the warning that this is my current perceptive and is subject to change with a deeper understanding of the character, time, growth, degeneration etc
I think, if there was a romantic connection between Su She and Jin Guangyao, I'm afraid it would only be one directional.
When Wei Wuxian mentions Su She would have to be left behind, Su She's response is for Jin Guangyao to go ahead without him. Jin Guangyao then says thank you and takes the offer. That is not the behavior of someone in love with their subordinate, but the acceptance of a person towards the sacrifice of their guard.
The following is what I think.
Su She kind of treats Jin Guangyao like Wen Zhuliu treats Wen Ruohan, but if Wen Ruohan was softer. Jin Guangyao highly values Su She in the way you would value your second in command. Su She was likely privy to thoughts Lan Xichen didn't know existed. In a way, he knew more about Jin Guangyao. But at the same time, if Lan Xichen had been privy to the same information, his understanding would been deeper because Lan Xichen used to understand Jin Guangyao's substance while Su She may understand Jin Guangyao's actions.
This is, of course, all my opinion which may change over time. I look forward to what your opinion will be once your understanding of the characters has a chance to age.

Fic: Jade Reflecting the Morning's Glow
Read on AO3
Jade Reflecting the Morning's Glow
Written for the @hgjspringbooks event for the prompts spring, flowers, mouth/forehead. 🌸
Fandom: The Untamed | 陈情令 Chapters: 1 (complete) Words: ~ 3.6k Rating: G Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply  Relationships: WangXian Characters: Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian Additional Tags: canon compliant, post-canon, domestic fluff, developing relatinship, drawing, kissing, soft wangXian, Lan Wangji appreciation
Summary:  Dipping the brush into the ink, Wei Wuxian let his gaze wander once more over Lan Zhan’s sleeping form. Lan Zhan’s long lashes, his fine-boned cheeks, with one of them smushed a bit on the left side where it was pressed against the pillow. The elegant nose with the round tip that Wei Wuxian found so adorable, the soft mouth with its kissable, plush lips, now slightly parted in slumber. All of it Wei Wuxian tried to capture with sure strokes of the brush, the sweeping lines of black ink shining wetly in the early sunlight. - On a beautiful spring morning, Lan Zhan sleeps in. Wei Wuxian has feelings about it and draws his beloved.
This is the third fic in this series. It works as a stand-alone, too.

T, 15k, Wangxian
Summary: Wei Wuxian angers the wrong fortune teller. Lan Wangji pays the price. - People are standing around and staring, while Jiang Cheng brushes off dust from his clothes. Wei Wuxian pays attention to none of it, staring at the pile of immaculate white and blue robes sitting where Lan Wangji once was. Is. “Lan Zhan?” Wei Wuxian whispers, and the animal standing on top of the pile of clothes perks an ear. Jiang Cheng freezes beside him, and the animal takes one step forward. There’s a familiar white ribbon hanging around its neck, and it looks none too impressed.
Excerpt: “Each step you take towards the Cloud Recesses is penance,” Jiang Cheng says gravely, in the way many sect leaders do when they attempt to act like they have an understanding of whatever situation is at hand. “A thousand curses have befallen me Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian snorts. “Each step you took towards Gusu was one.” Jiang Cheng punches Wei Wuxian’s arm in retaliation, while Wei Wuxian tries to reach and pinch his ear. Jiang Cheng slaps his hand out of the way, and Wei Wuxian’s about to see if he can clock him in the jaw when a sharp bark interrupts them. Wei Wuxian makes a strangled sound but the one who he normally hides behind when he sees a dog is now a dog, and it’s sending a lot of conflicting signals throughout his brain.
post canon, established relationship, animal transformation, curses, dog lan wangji, jiang cheng & wei wuxian reconciliation, humor, exposure therapy, crack, bad liar wei wuxian, crack, creack treated seriously, @phaltu

Twenty questions for fic writers
Thank you to @dual-domination for tagging me! :D
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 118 (including WIPs) - and this does not include my very early fanfic from the days before AO3 (though I hope to put those on one day)
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 842,883
3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently exclusively writing for MDZS/The Untamed - nothing else has quite gripped my entire consciousness as much as this fandom and its characters have.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Think Outside the Shell (aka my first Nie Sect Murder Tortoise fic), Gen fic where Nie Huaisang domesticates the xuanwu - 657
When Fate Opens a Window, Let Us Fly Through It, NieLan accidental (but really orchestrated by NHS) Lan ribbon marriage fic - 521
Under the Cold Qinghe Mountains, WangXian with dragon!LWJ and background SangCheng (this is so weird because I am NOT known as a WangXian writer at all!!!) - 494
It Was You All Along, SangCheng post-canon where NHS wore a mask to take part in a courtship tournament for JC, and now is the time to reveal himself, with a side of Yunmeng Shuangjie reconciliation - 468
Wrong Shell, Wrong Time, Gen (with background SangYao), the 3rd of my Nie Sect Murder Tortoise fics but my personal favourite (JGS gets eaten by a xuanwu and the only witnesses are Nie Huaisang, Meng Yao, and Jin Zixun - and Nie Mingjue is trying to find out what really happened) - 415
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! I respond to every comment if possible - I think the only ones I might not respond to are where someone says something as a placeholder and that they'll give another comment saying more, but never do. But yeah, every comment however big or small means the WORLD to me, so the least I can do is send back a thank you :D
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I think this is probably Mercy - it ends with NHS foregoing his revenge against JGY to give him a quick death with his reputation intact and it broke my heart to write.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Hard to pick since in general I tend to go the happy/hopeful ending route, and what constitutes a happy ending can be a very individual thing (e.g. for many the "married with children and a white picket fence" is the ideal happy ending, though I'm of a different opinion). If I had to choose, I think it would be a tie between Bed of Roses (modern day SangCheng, where the guys don't just get together but NHS can finally visit with his family again after 2 decades apart), and In This Garden, We Raise a Little Shell (I did the seemingly impossible and gave Jin Zixun a happy ending that people actually seemed to LIKE no romance just a JZXun/Garden ship lol).
8. Do you get hate on fics? Now? No, not really - every now and then there might be a comment that's a little less than stellar, like a criticism of a direction I went in or saying I was too generous in giving a certain character a happy ending, but that's very minor. Once upon a time? Yep - I stared writing back around the turn of the millenium when anti-gay crusaders were ecstatic going onto people sites and commenting that they would be going to hell because they're such sinners, etc - I once wrote a fic where a character was in Montreal with family on the day remembering the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, mostly gen but at the end I had him get a hug from his boyfriend - since I didn't put it as a ship in the description, I had comments, very unpleasant comments, about it.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes!!! I enjoy it, I hope readers enjoy it too. And I've written all kinds - romantic, casual, kinky, mistaken identity, multiple partners, dubious noncon, m/f & m/m (and I have an idea in the works for a f/f). I think the only I haven't written is smut where one is trans (am not trans myself, and I think I would worry too much about how to say things and worry I'm using the wrong terms or being accidentally disrespectful), serious dead dove stuff, or A/B/O (the latter is a squick of mine).
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? I have written crossovers, though very few recently. The craziest one was probably one called Things To Do in L.A. When You’re Insane - it was a crossover between the A-Team, Skinner (an old horror movie with Ted Raimi and Ricki Lake), Lunatics: A Love Story (another movie with Ted Raimi), and Xena: Warrior Princess, where characters from the original 3 modern-day canons were reincarnations of the triplets Joxer, Jett & Jace from Xena. It was weird but fun!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge. Lots of accidental 2Cakes situtations, but that's all.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No - I did receive a comment asking if someone could translate one of my fics into Russian once, but I never heard from them again.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes!!! In 2 different ways. My old fandom friend JoeyRZ and I co-wrote a Xena/seaQuest crossover that turned out so well, and our writing styles were so similar that nobody could tell where one of us started and the other ended :D It was great!!! Also, way back in the day we used to do Round Robins - A story told from one person to another (e.g. the order is chosen at random, one person writes the first scene, the next the following, etc etc until a story is done), sometimes with themes (I remember the centaur sex one and the "copy such and such writer's style" one, both had been on KSAres if I remember right). They were great, low-commitment and high creativity community activities that I would LOVE to see make a comeback!!!
14. What's your all-time favorite ship? For this, I'm going to consider both romantic and platonic ships, and I'll list for a couple of fandoms. Back in my Xena days, I know Joxer/Ares was huge for us Joxer fans, but I was a multi-shipper to the core... so I think actually the platonic Joxer&Xena&Gabrielle was my favourite to explore because they were totally found family :D Back in seaQuest, I loved Tim O'Neill & Miguel Ortiz both platonically and romantically - even when I shipped Tim with other guys, they'd always know that there is no Tim without Miguel :D And currently, even though I enjoy shipping Nie Huaisang with several others, my heart belongs to SangCheng.
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Toooo many, I even have a folder titled "Neglected WIPs".
16. What are your writing strengths? I think I'm good at dialogue, and at seeing the world through another character's eyes, particularly to where their opinions and mine might differ greatly.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Figuring out how to end a scene (and keep writing and writing long past when it should have ended), impatience (particularly in the editing stage - I just want to get the damned thing online even if it's less than perfect), lack of confidence in my writing (which affects me actually getting to writing it). I'm having a good day so that's my answer, but on bad days that list can go on far too long.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? It would have to be one I'm familiar enough with, and I would always put a translation next to it - never assume everyone else knows the same combination of languages that you do (e.g. some people have accused me of not being bilingual because I don't speak spanish - doesn't matter that I speak english and french fluently, learned some Russian in uni, and am picking up bits and pieces of random mandarin at the moment, etc etc).
19. First fandom you wrote for? Technically this would be the Muppets - I wrote a story about Gonzo the Great for a class project in 6th grade. But when it comes to grown up fic writing, I think it was Xena - I know I wrote a couple of Red Dwarf fics around the same time so I'm not 100% sure which came first, but Xena was my first HUUUUUGE fandom experience :D
20. Favorite fic you've written? I have no idea how to answer this - I've written a lot in several different fandoms, and there have been ones in each I'm proud of, including fandoms I try to stay away from these days (HP). But maybe because there's so many and they're so varied, I just can't bring it down to one or two favs.
Tagging: @lowkeyed1 @gekidasa @roseclaw @thebiscuiteternal - and anyone else who'd like to join in :D

3 improvements
I honestly have no idea how I’ve improved since the beginning of 2022. In many ways, I feel like I’ve gotten worse actually.
2 resolutions
I want to get back into reading more (fic and novels), and I want to work on completing some of my incomplete, posted WIPs
1 favorite line
from abyss: Most recently, they guard against a werewolf, who’s hunger grows insatiable with the rising of the full moon.
