A sour scent of Spotchka permeates the cantina booth you sit in and burns your nose. It's flowing heavily today to celebrate a significant win against the First Order, the liquid soaked into the seats. The implosion of the Star Killer base had been a critical mission success, one that guaranteed The Resistance the opportunity to fight another day.

Morale was high, and General Organa saw no reason to put a stop to the celebrations when everyone was in need of some sort of release.

However, you feel tenser than you did in the sky, blasting tie fighters; muscles primed and ready to spring. Your brain has initiated evasive action, but your body is frozen in place by the oak-brown eyes that settle intensely on your face.

Poe swirls the blue beverage in the tumble glass, creating a miniature whirlpool, not unlike the twisting feeling in your stomach. His gaze, irises obscured by his hooded eyelids, sets sparks across your skin like an ion charge.

He lifts the glass to his lips, taking a swig of the azure liquid and savouring the burn on his tongue. You hear him exhale slowly through his nose despite the din of the bustling Cantina. It's like your senses are honed in on the gold leader, blurring out the background noise.

"So, you and Gold-Twelve, huh?”

Your mouth dries when his eyes lift back to you, a playful spark of something dangerous flitting in his pupils. Had he seen that? The flirty arm that Kori had wrapped around your waist. The squeeze he’d given your hip— the brush of his palm against the curve of your ass.

“H-Huh?”

“Sure seems like he was getting cosy with you, Seven.” His tone is pointed but not vicious. There’s something clipped in his voice- something envious.

“N-No-… No, we’re jus-“

“No?” He asks you, pointing to the bar while maintaining a grip on the crystal glass in his hand, “Could have fooled me, Seven. He seemed ready to take you to his bunk.”

You feel heat flush your face, eyes burning into the ak-wood tabletop. Had it been imported from Tython? The rings and swirls within the grain were pretty, maybe pretty enough to convince Poe you were too distracted to listen to his probing questions-

“Come here.”

Your body betrays you. Startled by his order, your eyes snap up to his face. Poe’s eyebrow is quirked upwards, indicating his unwillingness to wait. He’s radiating this energy, something that makes your insides scream with delight.

“B-But-“

“If you’re not seeing Kori, come here.”

Seeing?! What the kriff did he even mean by that? Did he think you two were sleeping together, because you sure as kark weren’t dating! You stumble like a newborn foal out of your side of the booth, practically floating around the table to reach where he waits expectantly.

You barely slide into the booth when he’s pulling you onto his lap, hands vice-like on your hips as he settles you on his left thigh. A gasp rips itself from your throat, whiny in pitch, when he balances on his toes and grinds the muscle of his against your clit.

He’s gazing up at you, those eyes melting like chocolate when he looks at you through his lashes. Poe reminds you so much of it, rich and sweet and rare. When he parts his lips, your tongue begs to taste them, craving the oxytocin.

“I-“ you stumble; the sweep of his hands up your back in a soothing gesture makes your heart stutter and slam into your throat. “I’mnotdatingKori!”

The induced slur of the admission makes him smile, leaning up ever so slightly to get closer to you. Spotchka hangs heavy on his breath when he exhales a sigh, the tip of his nose brushing against the soft flesh of your cheek when he presses a kiss to your jaw.

“Good. That’s good,” he murmurs, his own words dripping together as though all the blue alcohol has hit him all at once. Poe isn’t totally drunk. He needs rivers of Spotchka to get intoxicated, preferring the much stronger Jet-Juice as it was less of a drain on his credits and more of a buzz on his brain.

No, if you knew better, you’d realise that he’s inebriated by you. The feeling of your body on his, the feeling of your cunt grinding on his lap when he drags you forward.

Whimpering, your hands fly out to hold onto the leather shoulders of his jacket. You’re trembling already, the effects of his touch hitting you much harder than even the strongest of alcoholic beverages they served in this shitty cantina. The friction, even through your clothes, settles a twisting feeling in your abdomen when he slides his palms under your ass, grabbing a handful of you and using it as leverage.

“P-Poe-“ you moan out his name, knowing damn well that half of the patrons in the damn bar could look over and see you getting all but fucked by the Black Leader, right hand to General Leia Organa.

“So pretty for me on my lap,” he whispers, eyes engulfed by the blackness of his pupils as he sweeps them over your form as you roll your hips across the length of his muscular thigh. Poe Dameron was well known for being too damn ‘thick’ for his x-wing seat, and you can feel why. “Think you’d look so pretty for me on my cock, baby. Fuck, look at you-“

Stars, you’re gripping the leather of the booth, fingernails scratching the surface beyond repair as you feel a surge pass through you, crackling like force-lightning up your spinal cord and short-fusing your brain.

“Nuh-uh,” he shakes his head at you, lips pulling apart in another Dameron-Dreamy smile as he works his hands between you, belt clicking quietly amongst the loud celebration of drunk revellers. “Pretty baby’s gonna wait until I’ve got a taste of what she looks like all filled up.”

Spotchka and endorphins are flooding your system; you don’t even bother to second-guess the location, the people in the room, the logistics. You just scramble to remove your cargo pants, Poe’s fingers hooking into the waistband and yanking them down just enough to slip you onto his aching dick.

The whole of Yavin 4 learns that you most certainly are not ‘seeing’ Gold-Twelve and that Black Leader Poe Dameron had already staked his claim, much to Kori’s disappointment.

I just finished reading green arrow 2023 and I’m thinking about a pre-nu52 dickroy au set shortly after bruce returns to life and dick goes back to being nightwing, but with lian’s current backstory mixed in. the timeline is pretty much standard pre-boot canon, with the major exception that lian “died” like a month before bruce did, and then got yoinked around through time and space, eventually landing in gotham.

so at the time the story starts, she’s ~14 and running around alleytown doing vigilante stuff as cheshire cat, and befriends damian, who’s ~12-13 and struggling to adjust to life with bruce back. they end up working an investigation together (damian doesn’t tell anyone about this) and end up accidentally teleported to a secret base on a distant planet. cue wacky home alone style alien base sabotage hijinks! but they’re gonna need to get home eventually, so they hack some comms to send a coded message back to dick where damians like “richard come pick me up also btw im here with lian she has blue hair and says she’s your niece”.

meanwhile dick is struggling to figure out how to be himself again now that bruce is back, and is still helping out too much in gotham while repressing his conflicted feelings about everything. he and roy aren’t really talking, because a month after roy’s daughter died, dick dropped everything and got sucked into gotham as batman and wasn’t there for roy at all. and there were reasons for that! bruce was dead! but roy did everything to be there for dick when donna died, and this is part of a pattern of dick’s, and there’s a lot of hurt and they haven’t talked about it at all.

but suddenly lian is alive and with damian on an alien planet! naturally dick and roy go on a rescue mission road trip (kory helps with space stuff), and in the process are forced to actually work through all their many years of built up issues. so they’re having vicious arguments and opening up about grief and working through painful memories, all while fighting their way through an alien jungle full of giant carnivorous bugs or something. and we cut between that and little cameos of lian and damian doing fun spykids-but-with-aliens antics! (and eventually we get a happy ending where dick commits to choosing roy & lian & damian & himself over bruce & gotham.)

#listen I just think having lian alive and just chilling in gotham is such a wild decision and needs to be explored #and this way I can stick to the preboot timeline and add a whole bunch of angst #I think lian is 15-16 at the time of ga2023 but this is happening earlier #very curious if anyone else finds this idea interesting #I have some dialogue written and like half of an outline so far #I need to get through more of my preboot self-assigned reading before I can write most of this tho #fic planning #wips #lost and found au #<- thats my working tag but I need to figure out a better title #dickroy #roydick #lian harper #<- im not maintagging otherwise but I think ppl who follow those might enjoy this #mine: dc

The Last of Us! Oh my God, what an awesome community! I was welcomed with open arms, my fics were received with incredible excitement - which I was shocked by - and I gained close friends that became like family in an instant!

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

The death fic. I loved and I loved and I lost you hit me one day like a damn wrecking ball and I literally had to sit down cause I had tears in my eyes and I couldn't breathe. It hurt like hell and yet I knew I had to drop everything and write it. It was at a time when I took a little break from writing Titans and I tried to force myself to come back to it by coming up with an idea that's cute, fluffy, and a bit romantic and even spicy. But that wasn't what my heart was truly calling for; instead it wanted to process the grief over losing this beloved show the only way it knew how - by pouring that grief onto my two birds.

This one on my Prospect fic Holding On And Letting Go because it brought me to tears and I was incredibly touched and impressed by this person's deep analysis.

You said to pick a few so I'll give you my 2023 Big Three - I will never pass on an opportunity to gush about my besties!

@ambeauty because she never fails me when it comes to squeezing all of the Titans-related emotions out of me. I'm talking the full spectrum - from getting so hot I need an ice bath, through rolling on the floor dying laughing, to screaming into my pillow and sobbing. The attention to details floors me every time, especially in the most recent chapter of her fic Without You I Got Nothing To Lose, where she brought Kory's home world to life through her own vision, inspired by the culture and traditions close to her own heart and it's absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! Not to mention she always sprinkles in some beautiful moments for my two birds and I collect each one of them like shiny little diamonds and tuck them close to my heart.

@sotvtaughtmehowtofeel making me emo about Cee and Ezra on the daily!!! To see myself reflected in your eyes is one of my favorite fics I read this year and holy shit I still remember how hard I was crying, how high my heart was soaring. My girl here is all about making you emotional with symbolism and softness, making the littlest things like a simple touch of a hand mean so freaking much it takes your breath away. She always hits all the marks that go straight to my heart and I’m always so excited to read her stuff!

@orangechickenpillow another Prospector in our ranks, is here because Etterath is A MASTERPIECE!!! To keep the two characters from any sort of physical contact/affection just to slam dunk you with it by the end? GENIUS!!!! I am literally shaking while reading every single chapter, just as I’ve been shaking and crying and holding my breath with all their works, either Prospect or The Last of Us!!! This one’s got a way with words that just gets you right in the gut, the insane ability to destroy you with a single sentence.

Hope Never Learns || Byrne || Trial 5-1

Well, how did it feel? To be the first Chula mod OC out of 7 to make it to the final trial? The he who would never know the significance of that 14% chance that he, himself had created out of the sheer determination of the players to keep him alive and well. Or.... as well as he could be.

He made the trek to the lobby with Kori and Kenshin, and ultimately the trial room, where he made sure to stop by Erik A to give him a quick thanks for earlier, and... well. ATTEMPT to give Jae-min another hug, whether he'd accept it or not. This couldn't be easy on Jae-min, at the very least. Byrne had gotten a front row seat to that suffering earlier on, hadn't he?

Swallowing down his own nervousness, Byrne headed to his trial seat, eyeballing the now-empty podium between himself and Jae-min. He'd disliked being near her up until this point, but now it was just... Upsetting. To have that gap to close to him. Ah.... but it must have been worse to be Akito on the other side of the room, in its own way. Not that he felt Akito deserved the sympathy.

It also seemed that Byrne had changed into his usual fit since the body discovery, as well, compared to the previous button-up.

As Calluna began the proceedings, he decided to do something he more or less never did: begin the discussion. He had his own reasons to clear his throat and step up first to bat, though he'd keep those to himself for the time being.

"So, uh... I can't say I have a good alibi. I woke up at 6 when all that shit was going on, got up and got ready for the day. Kenshin went back to sleep before I left. Uh.... Left for breakfast in the eatery at 7 alone, but... I saw Adrik come in at 7:30, 15 minutes before I left. Spent the rest of my time in the movie theater before the announcement. Nobody saw me in there, was.... trying to make myself scarce."

He shook his head. Not much help he could provide there.

"But uh.... Dunno, what do you think we should talk about first. Erisu? Or the all the other bullshit we found in those rooms? Because hot damn that was.... heavy."

He paused for a moment.

"... Maybe Erisu, to give her the respect she deserved? Like.... about how she was killed. Since.... Dunno, it feels like the only possible weapon here is that velvet fabric stuff, right? There... wasn't a whole lot left behind for her case. Dunno if all of that was.... planned heavily ahead of time."

Byrne scratched his neck and looked down at his feet. It was easier than paying attention the his missing trial neighbor.

Who do you think should be a love interest for Red Hood/Jason Todd?

Oh, Anon, you sent me a very difficult question. I have been wanting to talk about my thoughts on love interests or ships when it comes to Jason but I always end up getting scared and don’t do it. But because you sent me this ask and I want to give you an answer, I will actually speak (write) my mind.

I like ships, I enjoy romances within stories, the name of my blog is based on one of my favourite ships from a tv show that I liked. I have also reblogged content that is about another ship that I like from an animated show but when it comes to the DC comics characters that I like (Dick Grayson and Jason Todd) I actually dislike romances and the idea of love interests, a lot. In Jason’s case, I actually hate the idea of him having love interests.

And that’s because of several reasons, but I believe they can all be enclosed into one thing, Jason doesn’t seem to be into romantic relationships or established romantic relationships. Every time they put him in one of those things start to make less sense, I will explain it more in detail because I will be going through every single relationship that was, hinted at, teased or official for Jason in the last eleven years. (Yup, I have found every single relationship that Jason has had forced and/or out of place).

This is, of course, what I think, you are allowed to think otherwise.

JASON TODD AND LOVE INTERESTS.

New 52.

Essence, Jason’s first kiss and some other things.

Essence was, as per New 52 onwards, the first person that Jason had a relationship with. (RHatO vol.1 #7). They met back in the All-Castle and with her, he said that he felt, for the first time after being resurrected “alive”. Yeah, it is a little bit weird, let’s suppose that Jason was 17 when he first met her, and when I say “other things” I do mean it, the panels are never explicit but there is enough information given and shown that tells us that Jason shared a lot of firsts with her.

But here is my first complaint, Lobdell didn’t need to tell us all that, in fact, he could just have told us that they were friends back in the All-Castle because when Essence is introduced in the story, Jason already thinks that she betrayed him and the All-Castle and he repeats several times that he either: wants to kill her or should have killed her in the past already. (RHatO vol.1 #7)

So, the first person that Jason had a love and/or sexual relationship with is now an enemy through betrayal, or so he thinks. After some back and forth and some other truths getting revealed, everything gets solved, Jason and Essence suddenly don’t interact much with each other.

We get another peek at their current relationship when she shows up in Roy’s hospital bed to help him recover from his injuries. There Jason says that she was his first kiss and that even though they have chosen different paths and they have tried to kill each other a few times they are still there for each other.

Wow, what a lovely message Lobdell, two people who have tried to kill each other and have an overall nasty/manipulative relationship, are still there for each other, which is what truly matters. Give me a break Lobdell, what is this? I understand this book is old by now but this narrative is not cute or special. They barely trust each other and they have been more than willing to kill each other but they are still on good terms, yay! Shut up.

Isabel, the flight attendant that may be a little too pushy at times.

Us and Jason met Isabel, the flight attendant when Jason is travelling along with Roy (RHatO vol.1 #2). Her introduction is very sexualised and Jason and her flirt a lot, he “checks her out” but he is also thinking that Isabel is better off not crossing paths with him anymore, but apparently that isn’t what she thinks because she leaves her number along with Jason’s drink. He is very surprised about that fact.

Jason had been struggling with the idea of calling Isabel because he didn’t want to mix his vigilante life with his normal life, that’s why when he calls her, he hangs up as soon as she answers the call. (RHatO vol.1 #7).

But that insecurity is thrown out of the window (apparently) because he does go on a date with Isabel even though he is doing everything possible to hide his double life (RHatO vol.1 #10). Isabel seems to be having an amazing time and as they reach Jason’s hotel, he offers to call her a cab, which means “date is over I want to go home”, but Isabel has other ideas she starts pushing him and saying maybe I don’t want to leave just yet and Jason is a little uncomfortable but Isabel just kisses him. Yeah, non-consensual kissing happens and this is the first (but not last) time it happens. The kiss is interrupted by someone else and the whole thing ends up with that someone (Orc), Kory, Roy and Jason talking.

Jason was so ready to make Isabel go at the end of their date earlier that he barely notices her when Kory and the others show up. She is literally on the floor asking what is going on and Jason doesn’t notice her until after they are teleported to a spaceship. Jason was so out of it that he didn’t notice her up until Roy pointed her out. How insane is that? What are you trying to say, Lobdell, Jason is an asshole? Or was Jason so uncomfortable on that date that he forgot that the date was still going on?

After they all realise that they are all stuck in space in the middle of an intergalactic war Isabel and Jason talk. Isabel lets Jason know that she thought that their date was boring and bad because Jason was trying to hide his real life, she also asks Jason why a vigilante asked a flight attendant on a date and he deflects that question like a pro. (RHatO vol.1 #11-12). You see, I think that Jason decided to go on a date with her because he thought that’s what he wanted or to prove himself that he could have something “normal”.

When they finally go back to earth Jason kinda acts like a jerk towards Isabel at the beginning but at the end of the issue, we see that Isabel invited Jason to stay the night at her apartment in Gotham, happy times happen and while Jason is in the shower Isabel gets attacked by Joker. The Joker made it seem like Isabel overdosed while Jason was in the other room which destabilised Jason a lot. He calls the cops and she is taken to the hospital after Jason leaves the apartment. (RHatO vol.1 #14-15) The last time we see her she is in the hospital recovering.

A long time passes by and we only see Isabel again when RHatO changes writers for a few issues, the author of Isabel’s comeback is Tynion. We see Isabel entering her home after a date, when she goes inside, she notices some weird robots and those things were put there by Jason who wanted to invite her to a private resort as a date. (RHatO vol.1 #28). Isabel decides to go and when Jason gets too wound up and is ready to kiss her, she tells him that he needs to slow down because a long time has passed since they last saw each other and she is quite mad that because they went on one date and she ended up on space for days and then got attacked in her own home. Jason is a bit taken aback by what she says but he doesn’t get to say much because a fight breaks out. Talk about signs… maybe they shouldn’t get together at all, you know what I mean?

After the fight was over, Isabel told Jason that she can’t do this (their “relationship”) any more, but that if the fight ever ended that he could go back looking for her. So, she “breaks up” with him but still kisses him before leaving. If you are leaving someone because you don’t feel like things are going right why on earth will you kiss them goodbye? It’s not like they were on a five-year-long relationship, they only went on two dates! Maybe this is not that big of a deal but come on…

Kory, this one wasn’t a “real” relationship but the idea of it was forced.

Although Kory appears in the first issue of RHatO we didn’t know then how Jason and Kory had met. That story is told later on and it begins with Jason appearing on the shores of an island where Kory’s ship was stuck. He is in and out of consciousness but we do see Kory taking care of him as he recovers, we also see that Kory has a little bit of heart eyes for the mysterious man, but that was because Jason looks like Dick Grayson (someone who she had dated and actually remembered even though she said she didn’t).

After Jason finally wakes up, he goes to her and she gives him clothing that used to belong to Dick, Jason knows those clothes are Dick’s but when he asks Kory who they are from she says that she doesn’t know (she was lying). After Jason gets dressed, he decides to tell Kory who he is and his story, so he tells Kory “Hey, there is something you need to know about me” and Kory kisses him. Ah yes, more non-consensual kissing, how wonderful! Jason is taken aback and Kory tells him that her people assimilate the knowledge that way, Jason doesn’t make a big deal out of it but I will. Lobdell, you knew that Kory didn’t have amnesia, and you know that Kory has been on earth for quite a long time, there was no need for that kiss. As the reader, I know that that’s how Tamareans learn stuff but I also think that Kory shouldn’t kiss people just to know new stuff! It baffles me that they are still doing this, it was silly then and it's silly now, stop the non-consensual kissing and then excusing it because of fictional alien traditions or whatever, just stop.

But I didn’t put Kory on this list for the kissing, I put her here because even though it was never explicitly shown that Jason and Kory had any type of interaction, there were some hints about it, like that time that Roy asked Jason if he was mad because he had slept with “his girl” to chich Jason answered something along the lines of “she is not my girl and she can sleep with whoever she wants”. (RHatO vol.1 #2)

But that’s not all because Lobdell gave us yet another moment in which Kory kisses Jason without his consent and Jason is written once again alarmed, this time even Roy is present and he is a little bit mad because his girlfriend is kissing someone else in front of him. At that point, Jason and Roy both knew that Kory wasn’t new to this planet and that she had been in a relationship with Dick Grayson previously. Because of all that, Lobdell passing yet another non-consensual kiss as Kory trying to tell Jason that he wasn’t alone in his fight doesn’t sit right with me, it’s even worse when you reach the end of the issue and Kory leaves both Jason and Roy on their own. (RHatO vol.1 #32) Yikes, Lobdell, yikes. (This is no hate to Kory or the other women on this run, this is pure hate towards Lobdell, please don’t get me wrong, he is the one being nasty).

Rose just appeared so Lobdell could tell us that she and Jason slept together.

Poor Rose, so many female characters being dragged into this mess by Lobdell, she really didn’t deserve this. She appeared in the last two issues of this run, two! Only for Lobdell to set up the idea that she and Jason had some fun nights in the past, honestly, who let this man write women?

Their interaction went like this: “Hey Rose, love that mask” “Yeah, I’d considered a heart tattoo that said ‘Jason’ with an axe hacking it in two” “I’m flattered, but I think you made the right choice” after Jason said that last part, he continued with this, “You want to explain what you’re doing here trying to kill us? I remember the last time I saw you; you had a big, satisfied smile on your face”. (RHatO vol.1 #39)

Really, Lobdell? She appears in the last two issues; you have them have that conversation and then in the last issue they are the only ones left (after the outlaws disband, RHatO vol.1 #40) but we never see her again, Rose isn’t mentioned in Red Hood/Arsenal or RHatO Rebirth, she isn’t mentioned any other time. Lobdell just thought that Jason didn’t look like he had fucked enough in the past so he decided to let the reader know that he had had some action. I hate him.

Barbara, this pains me, poor Babs, she didn’t deserve that.

No, Lobdell wasn’t the one who wrote this mess, it was everyone who wrote Batman Eternal. I mean, what was this group of men thinking? Where they playing darts and they had all the batboys’ pictures up on the wall and in whichever the dart got stuck, Barbara will get stuck too? Is that what happened? How often do they play this game, can they stop?

I don’t remember having read Batman Eternal and quite honestly, I didn’t want to put myself through that after I made myself read New 52 RHatO twice because I had forgotten to take notes of what had happened in each issue (I hate myself). So, I will only talk about the absurdity that was Batman Eternal #19 and #28.

All of the “relationships” that Lobdell came up with, were forced or out of place or both but this one takes the cake. It’s so simple and short, but oh, so annoying!

The phrase “You will never be Dick Grayson” coming out from Barbara’s mouth and it being directed at Jason should tell you just how many levels of wrong we are working herewith. Their whole interaction in this book seems to come from that phrase, how on earth do you build up a romance from that? Am I going crazy? Am I missing something? Come on, be honest with me.

Jason being the one who makes Barbara shake off mind control because he told her that he “only remembers what’s important, like the day he met Batgirl”, I am sorry but what? I really don’t have the words, he had even said before that he thought Babs liked him because she looked nervous, what is this writing? Since when does Jason care about Barbara? They met once when Jason was Robin and she was significantly older, what are these writers on, crack? (Batman Eternal #19)

But that’s not the worst thing, later in the book, they switch roles and Jason is apparently no longer interested in Barbara but she is all like “maybe you should stay this time, Jason. Help the family. Save Gotham” and Jason says “Gotham’s never been enough for me Barb” and I am not kidding, she tells him “What if there was more…?” That was hilarious, my gods, they must have been high when they wrote that because that is just too wild for me.

And Jason, the absolute beast that he is, says, “No. Because Barb, it’s like you said… I’ll never be Dick Grayson” (Batman Eternal #28). Jason, you dramatic little shit, what is going on? Why did the writers put us through all that just to end up being like “Babs is thirsty for Jason but he has already moved on”, what was the point of these interactions?

Yeah, that’s all I can say about that, let’s just move on to the mess that was Rebirth.

Rebirth.

Artemis, a new player enters the game.

While we did meet her in the first issue Jason isn’t seen being flirty with her up until they are in a bar and Jason is really drunk, he tells her that she has beautiful green eyes and Artemis is like, “if you are hitting on me, I will punch you in the head” (RHatO vol.2 #8), Lobdell back at it again with that mix between flirting and violence that I hate so much, lovely. But I guess this meant that Artemis was setting boundaries.

Boundaries and kinda thrown out of the window when later in the book we have something like looked like the start of a kiss that didn’t really happen because they were interrupted (RHatO vol.2 #11). Jason also acts a little too cheeky in two instances in another issue, one of them was a bit funny the other one no so much because Artemis was talking about how she had let only three people into her heart and one of them was now dead and she might have been losing another one, at that moment all Jason has to offer is “about that third person… does his name rhyme with Rason Rodd?”, which was a bit out of tune of him. (RHatO vol.2 #13).

The big surprise though is that out of the blue we have an issue called ‘Date Night’ where Jason and Artemis seem to go out on a date! What? We are moving on so fast! (Spoiler Alert: Jason thought it was a date, Artemis only wanted to talk about how weird Bizarro was acting at the time). One of the things that really caught my attention was how differently she was characterized in the issue and that within the story Jason hadn’t realised that Artemis wasn’t really acting like herself either. It could have been a cute date if not for the fact that Artemis wasn’t acting like herself because she wasn’t “really” on a date with Jason. Also, Lobdell does love to hint at Jason’s sex life, before they went on the date Bizarro said “use it (the teleporting door) all night if you need” and Jason responded, “I don’t think we will be needing it all night. I mean, if we do that’s okay, but I’m not, like, expecting anything”, it was kinda funny but yeah, come on! (RHatO vol.2 #19).

From that issue, we jump to the great finale (or not) of this “epic” “love” “story”, the so awaited kiss between Jason and Artemis, oh yeah baby! A couple of issues with flirting, a date that wasn’t a date but maybe if Bizarro wasn’t going insane at the time (who knows?). This kiss obviously comes with the separation of this team of outlaws, Jason is left alone on earth while Artemis and Bizarro are swallowed by a portal of sorts. Jason finally gets the kiss that he so desired, but at what cost? (RHatO vol.2 #25). Brutal issue for Jason, it was also like a special edition because it was bigger and that makes me laugh because all Jason did in that issue was suffer, how unlucky can this guy get?

We don’t see Artemis for a while but when she does come back, she is being controlled by something and it’s making her want to kill Jason, so to shake whatever was controlling her, Jason kissed her and hoped for the best (it worked). See, Lobdell can change! Before it was women forcing Jason into a kiss, now it’s the other way around! Yay! (RHatO vol.2 #41).

After all that we see Jason and Artemis spending some time together, it looks very friendly, they even have a very nice moment when Artemis hugs Jason as he lets himself grieve the loss of Roy. Jason also seems aware (this time) that Artemis is acting a little off and he gets her to talk about how much she missed her axe. It feels like they are taking it slow, they are figuring themselves out after so long, they probably won't kiss and make things complicated, right? Yeah, no, they do kiss, but they each pretend that it was like kissing a sibling. In the end, Jason does say that he lied and that he knows that she lied to him and that was okay with him, my only critique with this is: Why did they have to kiss? They could have waited instead of kissing and then lying about their feelings, what is this, Wattpad? (RHatO vol.2 #42)

Their relationship comes to a halt and we end up seeing them together (in a messy bed, twice) at the end of Lobdell’s run. But even though those two had their fun and Jason almost told Artemis that he loved her, things weren’t really meant to end with them as a couple because at the very end of the issue Artemis says her final goodbye to Jason. She says, “This is it. The end of us. I’m not being mean. I’m genuinely happy for you Jason. You have grown so much since you started the outlaws. But you don’t need us anymore. You don’t need me. Tell me I’m wrong” to which Jason responds, “I can’t. But if I ever needed anyone, it would have been you, Princess”. (RHatO vol.2 #50).

All in all, this was the best-developed relationship that Jason had, but so much about this, one could have easily been transformed into a friendship between the two. You will see better what I mean after I talk about Isabel’s presence in this run. Maybe it is just me, but a solid friendship between these two could have been spectacular, mostly because of what had happened in that one annual that had Dick as a guest.

In that issue Jason was very jealous of Artemis having the most obvious heart eyes for Dick, she was very flirty with him and he was a real gentleman with her. When she offered to take him back to his trailer at the circus he said yes and there, as they were walking towards his trailer, Lobdell wrote the best piece of dialogue in his ten years writing Jason. Dick asked, “So, are you and Jason… together?” to which Artemis responded, “Me? And Jason? Anyone and Jason?”. How is Lobdell so blind to his actual interesting takes on Jason Todd. Aromantic Jason was right there Lobdell, but you had to push your shitty version of “romance” every step of the way! (I am fine with Jason having a fantastic sexual life but listen, Jason being aromantic was still possible).

Essence, first Jason accused her of betraying him but now *Uno reverse card*

Do you guys remember that Essence and Jason’s last interaction in New 52? Jason said that even though they were always fighting or willing to kill each other they also will always be there for one another? Well, when Essence comes back in Rebirth she plans on killing Jason because apparently this time around he was going to betray her. Their very first interaction in this run (RHatO vol.2 #35), consists of Essence saying, “I don’t know if I should kiss you or kill you” to which Jason responds, “why do you have to choose?”. Lovely, Lobdell is back at it again with his shitty version of quirky “romance”, if he is trying to write them as sarcastic, he needs to do a better job at it because it’s not a good look, and not everyone has read his New 52 run so introducing these two in this book this way is kinda not good. But then again, maybe that’s just me.

As a fight ensues after they said those things, we are shown panels of Jason and Essence when they were together in the All-Castle, they would be cute panels if not for the fact that they are currently fighting to the death. It is an insane contrast, and Lobdell also has Jason think “I was the first human trained by the All-Castle. She was the only heir to a throne she never wanted. It was never going to work out between us.” But the thing is that it did work out between each other until Jason left the All-Castle, when they met each other again they had both been fed lies about the other and neither of them seems to want to look for clues to make sure that those rumours of betrayal were true. One will think that now, one of you might not feel so confident when they think the other will betray them again, you went through this already losers! But I don’t blame Jason or Essence for their stupidity, I blame Lobdell.

The fight lasts a few pages but it will end with Essence stabbing Jason with her ‘Blood Blade’ (not to be confused with the All-Blades, those are Jason’s), but here is the thing the Blood Blade comes with a curse if you draw blood from someone innocent your soul will be trapped inside the blade. This is what happened to Essence because Jason was innocent of what she was accusing him, just like she was innocent in New 52 when Jason accused her of betraying him and the All-Castle. Boring.

Now here is the thing, Essence might be dumb or she didn’t know how the Blood Blade worked because later on in the book, the blood blade is teleported by Essence (she was still inside of the blade) to the front door of Isabel’s home. The very next time that we see Isabel she is unconsciously sharing a body with Essence after touching the blade. She possessed her because at that time she still believed that Jason wanted to “destroy the world” (RHatO vol.2 #45). It wasn’t long until she realised that she was wrong and then teamed up with Jason once again. (RHatO vol.2 #46).

Lobdell, why must you recycle stories all the time and make women look stupid? Why would she still believe that Jason was up to no good after she got trapped in the blade? But my point here is that this is supposed to be Jason’s first love and their relationship consists of, flirting, remembering the good times, and almost killing each other every time they see each other because *betrayal*, it’s so tiring and annoying. Do better.

Isabel, aw, shit, here we go again!

Lobdell really had ladies ready to appear in Jason’s life when another had just left. This is one of my major problems with the way Lobdell writes all of Jason’s relationships. It would be lovely if DC and Lobdell just outright said that Jason is only interested in having sexual relationships that aren’t meant to last a long time. Because the way they had him involving himself with women seemed a little sketchy, in #25 Artemis finally kissed him and he seemed pretty happy about it, but then she was gone and now that Isabel appears in Jason’s life again, he acts as if Artemis didn’t exist.

Isabel shows up at the Iceberg Lounge after Jason made public his comeback and his management of the place. One would think that given how things ended up in New 52, Isabel would like to take things slow, after all, she had told him that he could go back to her if he stopped living his double life, but no, she talked to him for a few seconds and then proceeded to kiss him out of the blue. Lobdell’s favourite type of kissing makes a comeback, how nice, I didn’t miss it at all!

I want to be honest with you, maybe I am being too harsh, maybe these are all “surprise” kisses but in a way, it still doesn’t feel right, this is not the first time that someone kisses Jason when he doesn’t expect it (Isabel has done it multiple times already), but he is written as if he didn’t care, and that is not good. Men can feel pressured into kissing someone or can feel like they are being harassed. Lobdell and everyone on this creative team seem to think that being kissed by someone you haven’t seen in very long out of the blue is romantic or cute or sexy or whatever but it has repeated itself so much that I only find it uncomfortable and annoying to read and see. (RHatO vol.2 #33). Maybe it was just me because in that issue where Isabel goes to the Lounge they get attacked and she is not at all bothered by it, this time around, Jason even tells her that her safety is his first priority which is quite funny because the first time they were in a date Jason forgot she was present and only realised that she had been teleported alongside the outlaws to a space ship when Roy pointed it out, but I guess Jason is a different man now. I guess he wants to cultivate a relationship with her now.

And he might because your boy asked Isabel on a date in Paris. They just happened to both be around Paris at that time but here is where Jason says something that makes me speculate as to why he is actually dating, he thinks this, “Isabel Ardila. A flight attendant. Maybe the only normal person I’ve ever allowed in my life. Don’t ask me why.”

Well, Chonky, I won’t be asking you anything, I will actually give you the answers as to why you are letting Isabel into your life. You do it because you equate dating to normalcy, but I am here to tell you that it's fine if you don’t want to date and form romantic bonds, it's not something normal, it's just something some people do. If you like going out with her because of the sex or whatever then that’s fine too, but if you have to question why you are doing something, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it at all.

Jason looks a bit uncomfortable, and we also see that he is feeling sad and lonely because he misses Roy. He even thinks, “sometimes, she even makes me feel normal”. All of this normal talk really speaks to me about Jason trying to have friends outside the job but he doesn’t know how to approach that so he dates women because it makes him feel normal. I can relate to that feeling in a way, and I just think that Jason is confusing friendly love with romantic love, I don’t even know if he knows of the existence of platonic love. A reader that understands those feelings can see that maybe Jason is struggling to feel normal when he realises that he doesn’t love the same way as others. The thing is, I don’t really think that is what Lobdell intended to do, he just wanted to push two of his agendas, Jason has an active sexual/love life and Roy Harper was Jason Todd’s best friend and the only one who is allowed to suffer his death is Jason. In fact, back at the time, Jason was actually one of the few people (or maybe the only person) allowed to mourn Roy.

When the date is over and Jason’s walking Isabel to her hotel, they have a chat where it’s revealed that Isabel thinks that Jason isn’t still living that double life, she actually thinks that Jason is only working as the owner of the Casino, Jason doesn’t correct her. And then there is this very weird line that Isabel says, “The airline picks up my tab. This way you know I don’t love you for your money”, Jason is very taken aback when he heats Isabel say that she loves him so he manages to say “did you just…?” but Isabel stops him with a kiss and a simple “nope”. Jason moves on and goes to work because he is still doing the vigilante gig, the double life, that Isabel thinks doesn’t exist anymore. (RHatO vol.2 #34).

Isabel and Jason’s relationship has always looked forced to me, in rebirth, it was even weirder because Jason had just kissed Artemis and when she was gone, Jason kind of acted as if it didn’t matter that much to him and moved on easily with Isabel, but now Jason is acting kind of sketchy too because he is hiding his double life and the last time he did that Isabel ended up in a lot of trouble. I really don’t know if Lobdell remembers his own shitty writing but he should remember this stuff.

We move on too, and now Isabel has come to visit Jason at one of the events that the Iceberg Lounge has got going on, once again Jason is acting a bit strange because he was having trouble at the time with the idea of his biological father actually trying to contact him before he was killed and he was also having trouble because he was in Gotham after his adoptive father beat the living shit out of him and “banned” him from stepping foot in Gotham again. Jason seems to open up a little to Isabel but just as he starts doing so, she tells him she has to leave. Jason looks hurt for just one panel and then he moves on with his (double) life. (RHatO vol.2 #35). This is the issue where Jason also comes across Essence and traps her in her own blade.

Because everything falls apart in what was one of the best arcs written by Lobdell, Jason sends Dog (Jason’s dog) to Isabel, so Dog can be safe. (RHatO vol.2 #36).

We see Isabel after some very long time, and she is described as “The on-again/off-again girlfriend of Jason Todd. Currently off-again”, at this point in time Artemis was back to being herself and Jason had kissed her and all that. I am just saying, Jason obviously isn’t comfortable in a established romantic relationship. Lobdell dances around that idea a lot, every time with all these women.

This is the issue where Isabel finds the Blood Blade outside her home. (RHatO vol.2 #43).

As you can see, I have problems with Lobdell not handling the relationships very well, there is no concrete information being told to the reader or the characters within the story about how Jason wants to date, we never know if the women in the story know that Jason has been dating/flirting with other women. I am not saying that is bad but it would have been nice if Lobdell just used his words to tell us what he is doing.

I feel like saying that Jason is the kind of man that looks for sexual relationships without commitment isn’t something that will break the world in two. All the “romance” is incredibly forced, just say that he isn’t into romantic relationships my dude… unless Lobdell really thinks that the “romances” that he came up with are actually well written.

Anyway, Jason didn’t know that Essence who he has been fighting against and then alongside was actually Isabel, so, when Isabel and Essence get separated for a moment Jason is surprised. After Isabel tells him that they are in the middle of a battle so she is going to let Essence control her body again, Jason tells her that he “loves her”. (RHatO vol.2 #49). Does he love her for doing that or does he love her because he likes her? Hmm, that’s a good question, it is never actually answered in comics because we don’t really get to see Isabel or Essence after that happens and in the following issue (Lobdell’s last) Jason and Artemis seem to have been having a very fun night and they also kiss, Jason had even kissed with Artemis before he told Isabel that he loved her.

As you can see, its all very messy, Lobdell really said “Jason can’t be directly or indirectly single but I won’t really explain what is going on to the readers or to the characters within the story”, and that speaks volumes about how bad Lobdell’s writing is. This man simply cannot remember the things that he writes, he literally had Artemis say that she didn’t think she could see Jason dating anyone and then she wants to date him and Jason had already been dating people before that statement was made! It was all so messy! It makes all these side-romantic plots pointless; Jason was lonely because he constantly lost his friends, then give him friends! Friends are nice DC, stop making it about romances when you can just give your characters solid friendships.

Barbara, this time the pain is brought to us by Geoff Johns

I put Three Jokers as part of rebirth because I still don’t know if that garbage of a book is supposed to function within actual canon or not but it came out while Rebirth was going on so that’s why it’s here.

Now, the whole book was bad, we can all agree on that but Johns’ handling of Jason and Barbra’s “relationship” made me sick. This is another thing that writers love to do to Jason, write him as the kind of man that cannot take rejection and continues to be pushy about his feelings. Please, DC, don’t ever let Johns write another comic for you, it’s embarrassing at this point.

But in this book Jason wasn’t the only one acting weird, Barbara also did some weird stuff. In this run, Barbara thought of Jason as an unhinged criminal that needs to be locked up but Jason had heart eyes for Barbara every time they saw each other, their whole dynamic was wonky and weird. They even fought before and after Jason killed one of the Jokers.

But that’s not the real problem, the problem was that Johns decided to make Jason get tortured by the remaining Jokers while naked, this man was found naked, injured and mentally unwell by Batman and Batgirl after Jason and Batman had a fight, Barbara decided to take Jason to her home so he could recover.

Jason has just come out of the shower, he was clearly mentally and physically exhausted, and also very vulnerable. When Barbara came into the room Johns had them have a conversation while Barbara was fully clothed and Jason was just in a towel, and he was talking about how lonely and not cared for he felt, he was opening himself up to Barbara and apparently, Barbara (Johns) thought that the best she could do was kiss him, you know, to offer support.

Honestly, what the hell do male comic writers smoke when they write? You don’t show support to someone that has clear feelings for you with a kiss, to then pull away and say that “we committed a mistake”, we? Girl, come on, you made a mistake and a huge one! But one will think that Jason realised that Barbara did make a mistake when she kissed him and he also accepted the fact that she didn’t feel the same way as he did… well, not really, Jason is actually written as the kinda guy that doesn’t take well rejection and the kind of guy that keeps pushing for something between him and the other person to happen.

This man asked Barbara three times if she could give him an opportunity after the first rejection and he kept getting rejected! But that is not all because we all know that at the end of the book Jason left a letter (that thankfully Barbara will never see) in Barbara’s door when he asked again to give him a chance and that he would change who he was for her, he would actually stop being the Red Hood for her! Was Johns on crack? He had to be! The levels of wrong that are being messed around with here are out of the charts! Jason Todd, who has different values and morals than Barbara Gordon would stop being Red Hood just to get a date? Boy, don’t be dumb! Do male writers think that we are going to swoon over this kind of writing, do they expect me to applaud? I won’t!

This “relationship” was forced and incredibly out of place and out of character for everyone and it pissed me off even if it doesn’t affect canon because the writing is bad and the narrative is worse! If you love someone you shouldn’t change everything about yourself to be with them AND if someone says no or rejects your advances then the only thing you should do is back down!

This shouldn’t have to be said!

Future State

Rose, if you know me then you know that this is just a big no for me.

In the Future State: Red Hood story we are shown in the first panel of the first page that Jason is sharing a bed with someone else. We get to know pretty early that someone is Rose. The setting for their relationship is awful, both of them are working for the magistrate, they hunt “masks” otherwise known as heroes or vigilantes.

Jason hates his job and is known for bringing his “masks” alive, Rose on the other hand seems to have adapted easily while working with the magistrate and she is known for bringing the “masks” dead.

First red flag, why are two people who have such different ideals in a relationship together? Let me remind you that the Magistrate is not a good corporation or idea for Gotham, they are basically domestic terrorists and Jason is bringing them people that are like him (he is there undercover). Jason is going against everything that he is in order to infiltrate the Magistrate, Rose seems to be having fun. She brings the subject between them without care and seems to not really understand that Jason doesn’t like the work that they are both doing and that he doesn’t want to talk about it as if it were a normal thing that every couple does.

The second red flag in just a couple of pages is Williamson having Rose say “This is why we make sense. Daddy issues”, wow, are we really doing that, Williamson sat there and said Rose and Jason can make a good couple because both of them have unresolved problems with their parental figures, how wonderful. To me shared trauma isn’t a deal-breaker but sure, if you want to make one of your characters revolve her relationship with her partner around trauma, then that’s on you.

Jason also had a big problem with Rose attacking people who are hiding from the Magistrate because they are actually giving food to the “masks” and to people who don’t have to eat. Rose doesn’t seem to care and that makes the relationship a bit tense. So far, there are not many positives for this couple.

Things only get tenser, people are going around wearing those red pill looking helmets that Jason used to wear in Batman and Robin (2009), the funny looking ones, and those people are just normal people that are stealing food so they can eat or take them somewhere else. Jason is following one of those people and telling them that he doesn’t want to hurt them, just talk but Rose shows up and kills them. Jason is angry and Rose goes on a rant about how being a “mask” is against the law so she had a right to kill him.

Together they figure out that those people were being controlled so they go looking for whoever was behind those helmets.

They are tense and Jason is very cold with her even when she tries to lighten up the mood, but shit gets worse when they both receive an alert to go hunt another mask: Jason Todd.

Rose wants the money. Aw, nothing says healthy relationship more than murder.

The apparent reason why the Magistrate put a target on Jason was that he had the helmet that he took from that boy, when he realises this he puts it on and hopes that Rose finds him through that, so she can help him if he gets in trouble.

Jason gets mind-controlled through the helmet and is forced to fight rose, they fight for a while and then Rose breaks the helmet. Jason says “knew you would find me” and Rose responds “you are lucky I have a crush on you”, ok, is Jason okay with Rose wanting to kill him a few minutes ago when the alert on him came out? That’s not a big deal for them? Ok.

Jason seems to be in love with Rose even though they think differently and they are written with as much chemistry as a history book, he cares for her and does everything to save her when they get attacked by the Magistrate.

When they escape the initial attack, Rose grabs Jason and tells the Magistrate’s drones that he will take the bounty for Jason but that she will deliver him alive. Jason is surprised and angry but then the drones just leave. And we are left with Jason and Rose on a rooftop alone after Rose seemingly tried to betray Jason.

Do you know what Jason does next? He tells Rose that they should go on a holiday. He cares and keeps wanting to protect her from the Magistrate. Are you kidding me? This is so messed up; I want to remind you that these were the only two issues for this story. This is all the information we had for a long while and it is disgusting. DC really let this thing be published!

Rose betrays him twice; he is willing to harm him on some level and he still wants to be with her? Am I understanding that correctly? Later on, he keeps wanting to protect her from the Magistrate after he has evidence that they are hyper corrupt.

The point I want to make is that Jason and Rose shouldn’t have been introduced to us in this book as a couple or as people who have been sleeping with each other for a long time. I don’t know why this needs to be said but having a couple where one of them can think of killing their partner is absolutely awful. And then they make it worse by having the “victim” act like it doesn’t matter and that they should work on protecting the person that wanted to betray them.

I understand that there is a Future State: Gotham run going on with a Jason story in it written by Williamson but I don’t want to go near it. Future State: Red Hood made me uncomfortable and it made me cry out of frustration. How did this story get a pass by the editor? It’s disgusting, and it’s that because of this absolutely forced “relationship” that Williamson wanted to put in.

My point with all of these “couples/love interests reviews” is that writers need to be more conscious about what they write and about how some readers might perceive some messages.

Non-consensual kissing, harassment and all those things shouldn’t be part of the dynamic of two people that you are trying to put together. If there is some non-consensual kissing you can simply put a panel where the person apologises for their actions, but not even that is shown in these cases.

Comic writers need to be more aware of the way they write relationships. Yes, these are fictional worlds, people and situations but you are still playing with real-life interactions. Making some things appear in comics as normal things that you do to your crush/partner or whatever has an impact on people and writers need to become aware of this.

Lobdell was dying to let us know that Jason had a very active love/sexual life, great, but you need to show healthy relationships or make things clear about the relationships that Jason had. So many interactions that Jason had with women were overlapped with each other and the reader doesn’t know how to take it, is Jason a player or is he into open relationships, to me, it didn’t look like that but hey, maybe the writer would let us know? No, he won’t, because all he wanted to do was make Jason “date” more women.

Here is the thing, I have always felt like Jason was Aromantic, he likes having sex and having fun, but established romantic relationships aren’t his thing. It is what feels right (to me) with this character. And that’s (in part) because of all these messed up relationships that he was forced into. The two times that Jason seems to “be in love” are in Three Jokers and Future State: Red Hood, those two books are horrendous when it comes to Jason and love interests, in one of them Jason acts like the kind of man that cannot and will not take well a rejection and in in the other Jason acts as if he were blind to the abusive actions his partner does to him.

None of those two concepts are healthy or nice. Writers need to do better about that, they just have to.

So, to answer your question, I don’t think Jason Todd needs a love interest. Not as the main plot or subplot, maybe as a vague mention but nothing else, because comic writers suck at writing healthy and well-developed relationships. And because I really see Jason as the kind of person that wouldn’t involve himself in a romantic relationship with anyone.

I know this answer is more a rant than an answer but this subject is one that I have thought about a lot and it really made me nervous to bring it up. To everyone who thinks differently about these relationships, I understand and keep doing you, these are all just my thoughts and they are not worth more than yours.

Summary: pinning over him. I know like 7 people will read it but he’s too cute. Canon has no home here and timelines don’t matter.

Warning: dash of innuendos.

The apprentice of a justice league member that went on his own. That could describe almost all of your brothers but it also described the beautiful man standing before you. That currently didn’t even notice you were staring at him puppy dog eyed.

“So, are you ever going to do anything about it or just stare at him until he jumps back in the sea again,” Kori said beside you. You jumped and gave her a look. “Noise cancelling glass. He can’t hear us and no one is looking over here,” she reassured you.

“That obvious,” you asked turning to face her. She nodded with a little smile. Of course she thought it was cute. She had told Dick the first time she knew she was attracted to him. That’s how she was raised. No fear of rejection or shame in sexual attraction. You were raised by batman and had a healthy dose of both.

“There’s not like it would do any good. He’s never given me a second thought and I don’t even think he likes surface walkers anyways,” you deflected. She snorted.

“He dated Donna.”

“That shouldn’t count. She’s Themyscirian. They’re like perfect,” you rolled your eyes.

“I don’t know. I find Dick very appealing and he is human. Is his powers what attracts you to him?” She asked leaning on a desk. Her long curly red hair flowed over her shoulder in a way that only Kori could.

“No, of course not. I mean, they’re cool for sure. But it’s.. he’s nice and honorable and funny,” you said and she grinned almost proudly.

“And you can be nice and honorable and funny without any meta powers. Don’t put yourself down. And if you need help..” she started.

“No no no. No wing woman,” you said quickly.

“What do you need a wing woman for?” Dick asked behind you. Your eyes widened before you turned around.

“Nothing. Just some guy from college. That I don’t like,” you said in possibly the worst lie of your life. Dick narrowed his eyes at you.

“I can tell you’re lying but if I don’t know the truth, I can’t lie to Bruce about what you’re doing so don’t tell me,” Dick said. Wally, Donna, and Garth walked in the room.

“Wait, did I hear that Nightwing’s little sister is seeing someone? Is he ready to die,” Wally laughed clapping Dick on the shoulder.

“I’m not having this conversation,” you squeaked out before squeezing between the heroes, feeling yourself far too close to Garth for just a moment. Thank goodness M’gann wasn’t there to read your thoughts or feelings. Kori stayed mum on the subject and concentrated on the mission that Dick was prepping the team for.

You didn’t go on missions now. An injury that put an end to that. You just couldn’t maintain the level a vigilante needed. Sometimes you’d help with the computers but mainly you worked at Wayne Enterprise with Tim. You were just visiting on this trip and wasn’t involved in the mission.

“Wish us luck,” Kori said giving you a hug. You couldn’t help but watch Garth in his new blue suit that fit perfectly as the rest of the team walked by.

“Woah,” you said barely above silent but Kori hugging you caught it all and giggled quietly. You flushed and tried to stutter out some excuse.

“He is very handsome. Wish him luck,” she whispered in your ear. You made a little noise to disagree and she simply grinned at you while walking away.

“What was that,” Dick asked, suspicious.

“Nothing, just a joke. Good luck. Be safe,” you said to him and Dick didn’t argue but definitely didn’t believe you before joining his team.

As they left, your mind wandered to the first time you met Garth. It was a mission in a warehouse fire that had homeless people camping out on the second story. You walked carefully to the back office through dense fog with flames threatening any moment to see if there was anyone in there. The fire was getting really close and it was kinda dicey. But it was your first job away from Gotham and you were 14 and you felt the need to prove yourself.

You entered the room bent low with smoke overhead. You saw something move in the back of the room and you made your way towards it. But just as you crossed to the back half of the room, part of the ceiling collapsed, trapping you in the room and knocking you to the floor. You jumped back against the wall. There wasn’t a window and the movement? A toy.

You shrank against the wall and pushed your panic button. The fire was hot and you cursed wearing shorts. “Shit,” you breathed as it started moving closer. The air was starting to get thick. The flames jumped and you pressed against the wall with your eyes covered, expecting flames to hit you.

But instead you felt cool wet air and you opened your eyes to see water surrounding you. It appeared to float in air and you reached a hand out to touch it, confused. As soon as you felt the tips of your fingers dampened, the water crashed to the floor causing you to jump.

In there place was a teenage boy only a few years older than you, grinning. You stared at him in silence. He had just saved your life.

“Did you- how did you-“ you stuttered and his smile grew even wider.

“Aqualad, at your service. You wanna leave before it crashes on us?” He said and you took a step to wince in pain. Oh yeah, when you jumped you twisted your ankle. Your plan, like all the other bats, was to suck it up and hobble out. But Garth had other plans and he quickly scooped you up bridal style as soon as he noticed you couldn’t walk.

“Just hold on. I’ll carry you,” he said walked down the charred stairs carefully. You couldn’t take your eyes off his handsome face the whole time. Your heart pounded and your lack of experience with dating or liking anyone had you completely dumbfounded. “You can let go,” he said with a little smile.

You were out of the warehouse clinging to him past the time necessary and quickly moved away from him, feeling your skin flush. Dick gave you a look over before give Garth with a look you couldn’t recognize.

“She’s catatonic, Bro.”

“Feed her something.”

“Wally, food isn’t always the answer,” Dick said giving your shoulder a shake. You jumped and knocked over a glass of water.

“Sorry!” You yelped reaching over to grab a towel.

“I’ve got it,” Garth said and with a flick of his wrist the water started to pour in the sink rather than off the counter. As you watched the water jumped before flowing down the drain. You laughed a little and looked up to see Garth grinning at you. Dick stared suspiciously at you both before being pulled somewhere by another Titan.

“So was the mission okay?” You asked, not knowing what to say. Your crush was more ‘stare across the room’ rather than do anything about it.

“It went well,” he answered grabbing a water bottle and chugging it. You tried not to stare.

“Cool suit,” you said and immediately felt stupid. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Thanks,” he said without adding anything else, leaving an awkward air to hang.

“Damn, you might be from the sea but are soo dry, Garth,” Roy said clapping him on the back on his way to his room. Garth looked at you confused.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been land side. Is being dry an insult now?” He asked.

“I mean, kinda. It just means boring,” you answered with a shrug. “You know Roy.”

“But you are dry. I mean, you live on land. Not that you’re boring,” he said with an awkward laugh. You smiled back at him before taking a sip of your drink nervously. “Does that mean you want to be wet?”

You coughed as you choked on the liquid. He tapped you on the back. “You okay?” He asked concerned. Donna walked by with a raised eyebrow but said nothing.

“I’m fine. No, that’s not how that works. It’s just we aren’t really dry. We’re like 80 percent water. Dry means like sand or something. Too dry,” you said and he nodded humoring you.

“It seems pretty dry here,” he said playfully.

“I can knock over more glasses. Get this place all wet again,” you quipped.

“Tempting. Or you can go swimming with me,” he answered back.

“Haha or I could- what? It’s nighttime,” you answered. “And doesn’t that do something to the currents or something?”

He gave you a dry look. “The currents come in at night? Yep. You’d be the safest person in the water swimming with me. I could navigate night swimming as a squirt. Come with?” Garth asked.

“I-“ you stared before mumbling.

“You what? I didn’t hear the last part,” he said.

“I... can’t swim,” you said and he stared at you and you felt like sliding under the counter and through the floor. Then Garth’s lips curled into a smile and he laughed a little. You looked down awkwardly.

“Oh you’re serious?”

“Yeah...”

“I’m sorry. I forget that swimming is learned skill here. I apologize,” he started.

“It’s okay. Really,” you insisted.

“Come with me. We’ll stay shallow,” he offered. You looked at him before nodding.

“This is a bad idea but let’s go,” you said pulling him along. Garth laughed as you pulled him out the back door towards the beach. “I forgot a bathing suit,” you admitted.

“I guess you could go insi-“ he trailed off as you pulled your shirt off and shorts to swim in your underwear and bra. He quickly looked away as you ran in the water to your waist.

“Coming in? Can’t believe I have to ask, merman” you said and he pulled off his shirt to quickly join you. You splashed him with water which quickly turned into a splashing war.

“Okay, you win!” You yelped as he bombarded you with water. He splashed you one last time and you turned away. Garth grabbed you by the waist as a wave splashed over you. You simply watched each other for a moment. You noticed your feet didn’t touch the ground anymore. You clung to him.

“I can’t touch,” you said a little panicky. He held on to you.

“Don’t worry. I’m right here. I won’t let you drown. It’s my job, remember?” Garth smiled. “Look around. Look at the moon.”

You looked up to see the luminous globe hanging above the sea. It lit a silvery path through the water, highlighting waves crashing. The beach seemed far away. The only sounds were the sea and a few night birds as well as Garth’s breath from being so close. You looked back at him and almost froze. He was gorgeous. The water truly was his element. His dark hair curled in the water and the moon glow highlighted his nose and collarbones. His purple eyes looked almost black in the darkness but the way he looked at you said a ton.

He looked down at your lips and you couldn’t help but lick them, tasting salt water. Garth bent a little and you turned your head up to touch lips softly. His arms wrapped closer around you as you kissed. Garth easily kept you above the water. Your brain was broken. You were kissing Garth, who you’ve had a crush on for a long time.

Suddenly water splashed over your head as a wave crashed on you both. You leaned away with a cough as water invaded your mouth and nose. Your eyes stung and watered a little.

“Sorry, I forgot to pay attention,” Garth admitted sheepishly.

“It’s okay,” you said with only a little cough. “Can we?”

“Get you on land? Yeah. You’re getting cold anyways,” Garth said before swimming towards the shore. It wasn’t a rough choppy swim the way people did. He seemed to simply glide through the water gracefully. So beautifully. Which was broken when he fell over on the beach.

“You’re the most graceful swimmer and trip on your feet when you hit ground,” you said with a laugh as you attempted to help him up. He was far too heavy to lift but appreciated the effort.

“Atlantean,” he shrugged. “Don’t make fun of me too much. You can’t even swim.”

“Yeah? You wanna take a dip in Gotham Harbor?” You asked and he laughed.

“Absolutely not. I don’t want to get some unknown cancer from whatever pollution they have. Or whatever rouge is living there,” he added.

“That’s why I can’t swim,” you answered. It really was cool in the wind and you quickly pulled on your clothing.

“But doesn’t batman have like multiple pools?”

“Yeah but I never used them. I was 15 when he took me in. Too old to learn,” you shrugged.

“You’re never to old to learn to swim. It’s important for safety,” Garth said. “Especially here,” he motioned at the beach.

“Especially if I keep kissing Tempest in the water?” You quipped.

“That’s just a bonus,” he said pulling you close by the hips. You grinned up at him and wrapped your arms around his shoulders.

And a spotlight shined glaringly at you both. You covered your eyes and looked away.

“Come inside,” boomed the voice of your brother. “Now.”

And that’s how you got a 20 minute lectures on the danger of night swimming and risk of hypothermia and Garth got the shovel talk. But despite the fact that Dick was really angry, you didn’t regret a thing and went to bed with wet hair and smile on your face.

Based on your readings of NTT and overall knowledge, how would you characterize Donna (core personality traits, goals, fears). She’s always been a hard character for me to pin down a characterization for so I’d love to hear your thoughts

Anon, I get what you mean because Donna is an incredibly hard character to pin down, because she is pretty much the poster child for convoluted DC origin stories. There's also a lot of messed up writing surrounding her (aka her relationship with Terry, which is technically not illegal but that I find creepy because of the 10 year age gap, and the narrative never addresses it as problematic/creepy, because Terry is Wolfman's self insert character, and warnings because this will bring him up in relation to Donna's characterization). She also suffers from starting out as the only female character in the og Teen Titans, so it wouldn't be unfair to say that some of her personality traits just boil down to "generic girl character" at least in earlier comics. But anyways, here's my take on, who is Donna Troy 😂

Core Personality Traits:

1. Motherly

It's easiest to see her acting motherly to Dick, but this isn't something exclusive to their relationship, and comes out with Kory and Lian as well. She frequently uses terms of endearment like Honey when talking to Dick and Kory in a motherly tone, and teases them saying things like "Don't do anything I wouldn't do." In NTT #28. In said issue, she also gives Kory advice, and she even tucks Kory into bed in NTT #16 and gives her a forehead kiss.

With Dick, she worries about him (he's going through it after Brother Blood starts brainwashing him) and is willing to call out his self destructive behavior "Dick, there's absolutely no one I'm closer to in the Titans than you, I can't let this go. I care too much. You're driving yourself insane. You're trying to do it all, but you can't. I hate to let you in on this, pal -- but you're only human. You've got to stop. Working with us. Working alone. With the Batman. Going to school... you've set yourself an impossible challenge." NTT #29. It's kind of ironic because she advises Kory to stop worrying over Dick, but yet, she can't help but fuss over him in later issues. I would say the best example of her motherly behavior with Dick comes from The Batman Chronicles #7, where she says "You know with all this running around, we haven't had a chance to cover the important things yet. How's your love life? Had any heart-to-hearts with your mentor lately? And what about sleep? Are you getting enough sleep?"

There's so many more examples throughout comics, she's the one to comfort Wally in NTT #36, she's a natural with Lian - playing Wonder Woman's lasso with her in The Titans #5 and telling her bedtime stories in Titans Secret Files #1.

2. "Perfect"

"How'd you get to be so perfect?" - Roy Harper, The Titans #13

There's a tendency in part because of how motherly Donna acts, and because her advice is generally really good, for the Titans to assume that Donna is perfect. She often hides/ignores her own personal problems in favor of helping other members sort out their own issues.

One example of this comes early in NTT, where Hyperion, one of the Titans of myth, causes Donna to fall in love with him using his powers (issue #12). She's pretty upset by this incident, but won't talk to the other Titans about this (leaving Kory and Raven without a word). She does cry and recieve comfort from Terry (ew), but she never opens up about it to her friends, despite their efforts to help.

Transcript from NTT #14:

Dick: "Something wrong, Wonder Girl? Something bad happen on Paradise Island?"

Donna: "Something I'd rather not talk about, Robin. It was personal."

Dick: "Listen, we've been friends probably longer than anyone else here... and I think we've been good friends. If there's anything bothering you, or anything you want to talk about -- I'm here really. Anytime."

Donna: "Th-thanks... I may take you up on that... someday."

Of course, Donna's not obligated to share her problems with her friends, but her unwillingness to do so along with her tendency to give advice to the others causes them to believe Donna doesn't have any problems. "I guess we're all insecure about ourselves. But if Robin's worrying surprised me, Wonder Girl's sent me for a loop." - Wally NTT #20

Even when opening up to Terry (ew again), Donna tries to downplay her issues. "It's really insignificant, Terry." NTT #20. Even when just thinking about her problems, she downplays them. "Still, I guess I have the least to complain about." NTT #29. Ignoring personal problems is something a lot of the Titans struggle with.

Garfield: "Hey, don't sweat it. I understand. You had better things to do. So did Donna and Kory and Dick and everyone else, too. All to busy to talk to me. You all have your own lives."

(Later) Vic (thinking): "Blast! Don't you see how wrong you are? None of us wanted to talk about Tara."

And this is something that can be a downfall to Donna and the others. Because they hide their issues, from Garfield's perspective, he's being ignored, because he's used to characters like Donna always being there for others, but now that he needs a shoulder to cry on she's not there and he can't understand why. This again happens to Donna in issue #13 of The Titans, where multiple members try to come to Donna all at the same time, but Donna's upset due to relationship issues with Roy and she finally snaps at them "Stop it! I am not a guidance counselor! We all had a very rough day -- including me. I cannot be available to you people twenty-four hours a day!"

The comparison to being perfect is also a bit of a sore spot for Donna in The Titans due to her convoluted history (in this case because she was recreated using Wally's memories, yeah i know, comics are weird, and she wonders how much of herself is this idealized notion of her that Wally had in her head and how much is really her).

3. Optimistic

I don't have specific quotes or references for this one, but generally Donna's on more of the optimistic side of things, and keeps things in perspective.

Goals:

1. Work-life balance

Donna has probably one of the best-work life balances out of all the Titans. She has a career as a photographer and actually started up that business with friends from college (NT #50 details this). I would say one of her goals is to be able to pursue and keep this career while still working with the Titans, because it's something she enjoys and tries to share with the others (Kory).

2. Family

In The New Titans #88 it's revealed that Donna's pregnant, and one long convoluted plotline you should skip (that includes the mirage incident) later, I believe she ends up retiring from the Titans to raise her child. Marriage and raising a child seems important to Donna, so I would say it's sort of a goal for her although I can't think of a time she explicitly states it, but she does talk about how it helps her for her future to be clear even though her past is muddled.

Expanding on this, though, one of her goals is keeping the Titans together as a family, and helping them with their various issues (as discussed previously). She loves her friends deeply and offers to help them throughout the run and sees them as family. I can't recall the issue, but she has called Kory like a sister to her, and she had Dick walk her down the aisle at her wedding in NTT #50. I believe she's referenced the Titans as her first family before, and in some continuities they pretty much are - in Teen Titans: Year One, she literally lives in their clubhouse starting at age 13-14 which is the case when she tells her origin in The New Titans #50.

3. People-pleasing

This goes along with some of the quotes in the motherly section, but Donna 100% is a people pleaser. She goes after people when they're upset to comfort them, and tries to keep everyone on good terms and talk through conflict.

This can be to her detriment sometimes, especially when she prioritizes the wrong thing. "The world goes to hell in a handcart but you stay at home helping someone write a lousy story!" - Dick, The New Titans #19. It especially hurts her as a leader in this scenario, and she struggles leading the Titans in this arc, and looks to a young Jason Todd for guidance despite the fact he's like 14.

Fears:

1. Identity Issues

"It's birthdays, Terry. No, just birthdays. I don't know when mine is. How could I when I don't know who I am? I don't know my age, or even my real name. I don't think about it often, honey, but at times like this... well, I can't avoid thinking. I've tried everything to get the truth, and I've failed. And sometimes it really hurts not knowing. Sometimes I wake up crying..." - Donna NTT #20

Donna is the rare exception in that she's allowed to grapple with just how convoluted her comic book backstory is. Her past is a big source of insecurity and anxiety for her.

Kory: "You didn't tell us -- when's the happy day?"

Donna: "Hold it... I haven't given him my answer yet."

Dick: "Something wrong?"

Skipping ahead Donna: "It's me, Robin -- I -- I always hoped I'd find out who I really was before I got married... I -- I don't know what to do."

Dick: "Hey, it'll work out. Maybe I can help, okay?"

In true to Donna fashion, even after Dick offers she lets the issue slide, and it ends up being Terry that seeks Dick out and asks him to investigate Donna's case in NTT #38. It's pretty clear she's anxious throughout the issue as she and Dick investigate together, going as far to say "I wish you hadn't started this." And "My insides are doing the tango, what if I learn something I'd be better off not knowing?" Every time she learns something new about herself in the issue, the relief is clear on her face and it moves her to tears. She values having tangible information about her past and it causes a noticeable change in her.

Dick (narrating): "We left and drove to a nearby restaurant. All of a sudden, Donna was famished. I don't think I've ever seen her eat so much."

Donna: "It's over, Dick. All my questions are answered. I know who I am. My real mother died. My adoptive parents died in the fire."

Dick: "I guess so."

Donna: "I've never been so... happy before."

Dick (narrating): "Happy? She was positively giddy."

Again, as in previous points her identity resurfaces as an issue in The Titans, and it messes up her friendship with Wally for a while. It's again a plot point in Titans Rebirth, and again in The New Titans, and at some point it was revealed she had lived thousands of lives (after she dies) and taking all that in would be incredibly overwhelming for anyone.

2. Her friends dying

This kind of goes for all the Titans as well. But like yeah. A lot of them die, and she's seen the impact of friends dying on the group before. She herself saw the impact of her death on the Titans - i mean it literally broke up the Titans after Graduation Day.

There's a flashback in Titans 2008 #23 (another comic i don't recommend) where it's revealed that she turned down Roy's marriage proposal because of a prediction from Lilith saying that the person she married would die. Even though she loved him, she wasn't willing to take that risk.

This doesn't really neatly fit into this category, but death before the reboot was very real for Donna. We joke that everyone comes back to life, but that's not true for Donna - even though she herself came back. She lost both Terry and Bobbie (her son) in a car crash, and there's moments throughout Titans comics that show her grieving them (Titans/JLA #2, The Titans #15, and Blackest Night: Titans #2). Neither character ever came back (and were subsequently forgotten in the reboot), so even though death might not seem real in the DC universe, it can still be permanent in her mind.

In conclusion, Donna's one of those characters that seems to get lost without the Titans, because they're such an integral part of her life and I don't think she's ever gotten a solo run, so she pretty much lives and dies by them. She's also a character that's similar to Dick in that she grew up in the hero-ing world, and is well loved and respected by long-standing heroes. She can fall into the "girl next door" trope, but I really love her deep and meaningful platonic relationships with Kory and Dick and the rest of the Titans, though it would be nice to get to see Donna on her own a bit more, and see her pursuing her photography career again, rather than just seeming to float around when the Titans break up. I hope this isn't too long or confusing.

Cecilia resisted the urge to chuck her laptop at her apartment wall.

Kayali ran. Air crackled with static against her skin, the roar of rain sweeping in from behind growing relentlessly louder.

She had never tried out outrun a storm wall before. Generally you either got to shelter first, or you hunkered down in the violence.

Today wasn’t the day for ‘generally.’

8 - Shadowrunner

There were eight people in the Central Cell today. More than usual. And the front panel had been left off, exposing the heavy criss-crossed bars, leaving the prisoners in plain sight.

9 - Death by Dawnlight

Taja's hands were sticky with blood. It had started to go cold on her fingers, the thick heat fading as it congealed to dark red goo.

10 - undead short story I never finished

No one likes to admit when they have a problem with undeath. It’s not necromancy, not really. Necromancy is organized. Nice, and neat, and utterly incomprehensible in spite of itself.

Undeath is just messy. Echos of the world gone wrong. A microcosm of reality all warped apart and tied around itself, trapped away in something that can never know real consciousness.

11 - prologue for a super complicated story I might draft someday

They ran.

She still didn’t know him, not really. A few odd jobs did not make a partnership. Certainly not a friendship.

But apparently they were still prepared to die for each other. She’d never thought she could die for someone before. She’d never thought anyone would die for her.

12 - The Shattered Sky

Selby awakens alone, surrounded by stone.

There are no shackles on her. It’s still a surprise. She unfurls slowly, eyes darting, but she’s alone in the wild, at an unfamiliar crossroads in an unfamiliar age.

13 - Rook and the Red Tree

Rook stood in the entrance arch, pulse beating steadily in her throat. There was no evidence that she was at the edge of a Splice. There was no discernible temperature change in the air on her back versus her face, no unnatural wind, no distant sounds that didn’t belong. None of the usual signs were there.

And yet...

Her heart was the wrong size in her chest. Her feet weren't grounded, like standing on a slanted surface, her whole body working just slightly harder than usual to stay steady and upright.

I knew the ocean crashed a hundred feet below me, but couldn’t hear it over howling salt wind.

Darkness came early that night, descending fast and unexpected on the little cluster of buildings of Deepwater Crossing. Moonlight glinted in rippling, black water as the river tore ever-onward.

One street over, someone screamed. Coletta froze, just for an instant. She was the last person who should head for screaming.

Not for the first time, Kaya was alone. It was getting old, this endless walking, heading for mountains she wouldn’t see for another month at least.

Dick looked at her dancing with Kory. She had a drink on one hand and the other was around Kory's shoulders while they danced. They were both laughing at Hank's "dance moves" aware that the guy might have a few more drinks than he should have. Dick was sitting at bar, looking from afar. He was nursing a beer in one hand, his second one to he more precise, he didn't feel like drinking anything too strong that night. He was tired and the last thing he needed was to wake up hungover the following morning. 

Y/n did not feel the same way as him apparently. She drowned her drink and cheered when Donna got back to the girls with a tray of shots. The three girls clinked their glasses and drank two shots each before laughing and screaming in happiness at the sensation the alcohol left in their throats.

Dick knew that y/n was a lightweight when her drinking but he was not going to deny how funny she was whenever she was drunk. She always ended up discussing with Hank about which was the best movie ever made: Back to the Future (her favourite) or Jurassic Park (Hank's). The arguments became heated the more they drank until either her or Hank would throw up and thus finishing the debate.

Neither of them had drank enough to start arguing about that yet, and Dick didn't want to wait until that happened, so he made his way to the group not even finishing his beer. 

"Dickie!!!" She screamed when she saw her approach the group. "Come 'ere! Hank said that Jurassic Park was better than Back to the future! Can you believe?" The girl asked him scoffing at the blondes words.

"I mean we're talking about time traveling here Hank, what's better than that? A bunch of reptiles that try to kill you??? Nah that's bad" she slurred every words while holding a Dick's biceps tightly. The boy had his hands around her hips trying to keep her in place.

"Besides, Marty is a total babe" she said giggling making Donna and Kory nodded their heads in agreement. Dick laughed and squeezed her hips trying to regain her attention, when the girl looked back at him she shared a dopy smiled at him and rested her head on his chest.

"I don't feel so good Dick" she said closing her eyes and inhaling his scent, she squeezed her hands around Dick's sides and the boy eyes widened when she did that. "You on the other hand...feel really good."

Dick laughed at the girl and took the beer from her hands handing it over to Donna who took it gladly. 

"Alright sweetheart, I think we need to get you to bed now" Dick said waving goodbye to their friends and dragging the drunk girl outside the bar. 

"You are like really pretty you know?" The girl asked him making a faint blush appeared on Dick's face. He cleared his throat and settled her in the car. The ride to the tower went smoothly, she slept most of the ride and Dick sighed looking at her. He was whipped and there was no denying it.

Dick walked with Y/n towards her bedroom on the tower,but the girl seemed to have other ideas. They ended up in Dick's bedroom. After giving her some water and helped her out of her clothes to change them for something more comfortable, the girl had begged him to stay with her for the night. So that's how Dick found himself laying underneath the girl he had a massive crush on since forever. He didn't want to think much about it, he blamed the alcohol for the way she was behaving, but deep down he hoped that it was more you acting than the alcohol.

Dick woke up after hearing y/n groaned. She was grabbing her head trying to silence her alarm that was ringing far too loud for her hungover mind. Dick sighed and grabbed her phone turning off the alarm when her eyes shot open. She let out a screech that made Dick almost fell out of the bed.

"What!? What happened!?" He asked worried.

"Why are you in my bed!?" The girl asked trying to cover herself even though she was fully clothed, but her mind was far from clear. 

"It's actually my bed…" the brown eyed boy answered scratching his head.

Y/n ran a hand through her head and asked with a shaky voice "Did we…?"

"What?" He was confused at first but his eyes widened when he finally understood her question "God no!" He answered quickly.

The girls face fell but she covered it quickly with a cough. "Ouch" she murmured quietly but Dick heard her anyway.

"That's not what I mean" he said moving closer to her "I just mean that I would have never done anything with you while you were drunk. I'm not like that."

"No, I know I just thought…nevermind" she said trying to get away from him as fast as possible.

"Wait!" Dick said way too loud which made her wince. "Sorry. Look I've been meaning to say something and I guess this is just as good as any other time so I'll just say it okay?"

"Okay" she replied confused.

"Okay, I'm going to say it and hopefully you'll be fine with it, I mean you don't have to, but if you're then great! I mean-."

"Dick! You're rambling" she cut him off amused at the outburst.

"Right, okay" dick sighed and looked at her right in the eyes before speaking once again "I like you...and I don't think this feeling is going to go away."

The girls eyes widened and her mouth was wide open. She couldn't believe that her crush was admitting his feelings for her. She felt dizzy but in a good kind of way. 

"Dick i-" before she could say another word she ran out of the room and went straight to the bathroom to empty her stomach. Dick was left confused in the bed but soon after went looking for her. He found her kneeling in front of the toilet puking her guts out.

"So...does that mean that you don't like me back?" He asked half joking half scared of her answer.

Y/n groaned and got up to rinse her mouth in the sink. She looked at him and saw amusement in his eyes but also worry.

"That was...bad timing" she said laughing lightly. "But um, I like you too" she said sheepishly.

Dick smiled and walked closer to her until his arms found her waist. "I could kiss you right now, but I'm going to wait until you brush your teeth" he said playfully.

"Fuck off" she said walking past him leaving him laughing in the bathroom. Apparently Dick had a lot to thank to alcohol after all.

Land of The Free and the Home of the Wayne 2

Part One

Clearing up some ages: Jon 14, Mar’i 13, Damian 17, Class 15-16 (Marinette and Adrien are both 16 tho)

A man stepped out of a bunch of black haired boys who were standing on the front stairs and cleared his throat.

“Hello students, my name is Bruce Wayne and I will be your host for the duration of the stay. these are my sons and my granddaughter. They all felt the need to come back home for those who have dared to leave the nest.” The last remark was pointed at one boy who looked up mock hurt.

“I get it B, you want me to move out but everything is so free here,” the boy complained and another was holding hands with a woman and started laughing at his brother’s anguish.

“Jason, I think Bruce actually planned this speech,” another boy said bumping the first boy who must have been Jason in the ribs.

“Will you two shut up and let father finish his speech?” another boy pushed the other two apart.

The class just stared at all of them in wonder.

“I guess you boys deserve an introduction, these are my sons Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian. This is Dick’s fiance and daughter Kory and Mar’i. Alfred would you show them around?” Bruce asked already looking just about done with this field trip.

There was another boy sitting further up the stairs looking down and playing with the sleeves of his sweater.

“Where did Master Jonathan go Master Damian?” Alfred asked the youngest boy in the group.

“I don’t know I tried to put a bell on him but then he just got distracted by it,” Damian said and the boy in the back stood up rolled his eyes and started walking down the stairs only to trip on the last one and Damian reached out and caught him the wrist without even having to look.

“Thanks Dami!” Jon said dusting himself off.

“Why am I friends with you again?” Damian asked and Jon just laughed before looking out at the class. 

“Hi, I’m Jon Kent.” Jon waved at the class and Alya just took a picture of her idol’s kid who happened to be standing right in front of her single and bashful. This could be her chance.

“Wow no one did the thing, this is an improvement from last year,” Jason said nudging Tim and then there was a squeal from the back.

“OH MY GOD YOUR MOM KNOWS SUPERMAN AND YOUR DAD KNOWS BATMAN!” someone shouted from the back. Jon covered his ears wincing slightly and Damian just glared and took Jon inside.

“You couldn’t have said nothing?” Tim asked trying to stop his ears from bleeding.

“Alright class, let’s follow Alfred to see our rooms.” The students walked inside following the butler to their assigned rooms.

Tim fell to the ground out cold and Jason just laughed pointing. Jason may or may not have put tranquilizer in his coffee that morning.

“Did Tim just die?” Mar’i asked her dad who shook his head at Jason’s behavior.

Damian and Jon started walking up the stairs toward the direction of their rooms but Jon just tugged on Damian’s arm and nodded in toward the guest room wing. Dick had just walked in and saw them sneaking off.

“If you two start spying on the class I will be... and they’re gone.” Dick just sighed.

They stood outside the first room and heard giggling.

“Jon was totally into me and Lila you’re so lucky to have Damian as a boyfriend,” one girl said and another laughed along with her.

“Oh yeah Dami made sure that our class won and I could totally talk Jon into asking you out. The chemistry was totally there right Rose?” the girl who had to be Lila asked.

“Yeah, I could feel it!” Jon’s eyes started glowing red and Damian pulled him to the next room. There were three girls in there too one was crying and the other two were comforting her.

“Come on Marinette this field trip is supposed to be fun you can’t just cry the whole time!” a blonde girl said and the other nodded along.

“I only came here to meet Jon cause I think he’s my pen pal but I didn’t know it was going to be him, I mean Alya’s obsessed with him,” Marinette said crying and Jon just wanted to go and hug the girl that he had been talking to for months but Damian shook his head and pulled him to the next room which had three boys.

“Oh please, Jon Kent came out a year ago so Alya’s crazy if she thinks that she’s going to date him. You on the other had have an actual chance,” a boy in a baseball cap said laughing.

“He’s cute though,” a boy with blonde hair started laying in his bed, “you know how I get around cute guys.”

“He’ll probably be nervous when he sees you too, you’re a model Adrien and he is kind of adorable in that nerdy sort of way but that just means that you should ask him to show you around or something,” a red-head said sketching on his bed.

“You don’t like hi...”

“No Adrien I’m dating Marc,” the red-head responded patting the other on the shoulder.

Jon stared and Damian pulled him to the next room which had three more boys.

“I bet you could ask Mar’i out, she’s like only two years younger than you dude.” 

Yeah Jon had to pull himself and Damian away from that room before either of them went explosive to protect their friend. They made it to Damian’s room before Damian grabbed a piece of paper and started writing.

“It seems like we have four missions for the duration of the field trip, do not let that kid get near Mar’i, get you a date, cheer up that Marinette girl who seems to be your pen pal, and prove a liar wrong,” Damian said and Jon nodded smiling.

“Wait what was that date part?” Jon asked blushing.

“What date part?” Damian asked back holding out his hand to signal that this was a real mission and Jon took it.

“Let’s show them how we work in the land of the free and the home of the Wayne.”

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write - I would say most of the fanfics I wrote in the last year. The majority of them sprung up out of nowhere and took on life of their own. But that's kind of a cop out answer so I am going to say wreck my plans, that's my man. When I originally started writing this fic, it was just a one-shot prequel to another fic I had written in this same universe that I had created. It started as a one-shot, then I quickly realized it was turning into two chapters, then I looked at it and said yeah... this is gonna have to be a multi-chaptered fic. This fic was the flower you plant as a joke because you think you can't take care of it, then you're like oh shit yeah... this is actually turning into something. It's especially shocking because the fic has almost 18,000 hits which is genuinely insane to me.

21. most memorable comment/review - there's a couple of them that i go and reread. I tend to get reminded of the really long and detailed comments. There is something special about writing and knowing what you're trying to say and write and convey, and someone leaves a long comment talking about how much they loved that part, and pulls quotes, and really goes into almost a review as a comment. I want to publish books one day, and comments like those really give me hope that I am capable of a interesting published original work of fiction. Also there was this comment left on my red string of fate dinluke series, called all along there was some invisible string tying you to me, in which someone was like documenting Din and his issues with this gold string attached to his finger in the fic that centered around Din's POV. Everytime I see that comment I chuckle, because it's really summarized the fic better than I ever could!

25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read - oof there's a couple that I really love. the celeb au dinlike is like one of my favorite little series, and i thought they did a great job with characterization and complicated family dynamics.

a lil smut 

It’s almost 4 in the morning and instead of working on stories that need to be posted, I decided to write a lil DamiRae smut. do i regret? No, No i don’t. At least now I have a sense of what writing smut it like. and wow is it over powering.

“These criminals keep popping up, they’re practically begging to be caught now.” Damian declared peeling off his domino mask when entering the Tower with Raven after their late night patrol. 

“Lucky! You always get some fun on your night patrols. So who’d you guys capture?” Donna questions interestingly, laying her head on her palms waiting for Raven to answer.

Raven stirred her tea reverting back to the night patrol she just went on with Damian. It was a quite coincidence capture that actually helped solve the case that the team had been working on for the past week. Activating the transmitter to reveal the full information about their little vigilante they captured she began tapping keys to get the proper summary about the man.

“Alex Samson, 19 year old boy who has been a drop out since the age 14, living on his own in San Francisco. Apparently he’s the reason these dead civilians that have been showing up in alleys. Although when we took him, he wasn’t resisting.” Raven paused on her story recalling the words of their new captive. “He was just calmly saying they were bad people who ran along the streets doing horrific deeds as the police did nothing knowing what they were.” 

Sure she had empathic abilities but that didn’t normally mean she could tell what he was saying was true or not. But something about his strong willed words seemed honest, she could feel the sincerity in not just his voice but in his mind.

“Helloooo Earth to Raven, you okay?” Donna hollered waving a hand in front of her to bring her back to reality. 

Raven took notice of Damian's sudden head movement towards her from the corner of her eye. Oh how he was always so attentive when she was brought to the subject. Yet paying no attention to it, she lifts her teacup towards her mouth “Yea, this might seem strange but what if he was telling ...the truth.” she mumbles into her cup looking up at the two waiting for their response. 

Damian’s eyes narrow down at and lips pressed into a thin line, “What are you assuming?” 

He has to admit after capturing any criminal he didn’t like to focus on them anymore just continue on new missions. He didn't want to think whether or not this man was right for his wrong doings. 

She knew from his voice that he didn’t want to dwell on the subject but only asked because he was interested in what his girlfriend had to say, “His emotions were not like any other person we’ve detained before. His were different.,” she purses her lips trying to find the proper word, “I could feel it almost like I knew what was going on in his head, it felt almost heroic and truthful. I can feel the genuine emotions he was feeling. But I felt something similar towards him like I know how he feels or what he’s been through. I can't say for sure though.” 

Something stung when Damian heard her words. He didn't want to admit to it but he liked knowing they were correspondent to one another. 

He felt ridiculous even thinking this.

It might sound peculiar but knowing that they can understand each other perfectly with their abnormal background, it made him feel fortunate having someone to know the angst and grief he’s felt in his life. He didn’t like it knowing that Raven can simply say she felt similar emotions to someone when they both had hardships in their life. No one could compare to them. He liked keeping Raven to himself. Knowing that he can understand her better than anyone. Now some new fucking vigilante comes in as she claims she feels a related bond, it pissed him off.  

“Raven, he killed those people, in no way that results in a heroic action.” His voice sharp and stern almost came out as harsh towards her. 

Was he kidding her right now? Did he forget that he was part of the league of shadows, where he would kill people, sometimes even the innocent. His reasoning angered her and she recently has never been one to be objective by his remarks. 

“Your here after you were part of an assassination group. What are you to say that your past life doesn’t measure to his, maybe he was doing it for a reason. You can’t just think that every criminal doesn't have some good in them, Damian.” 

Goddammit unable to get the next word out she storms out of the room putting him in an uncomfortable position in front of his teammate.

 “Awkwarddd” Donna lightly sang exiting the kitchen table leaving him ponder on the situation he had just caused with his beloved.

He and Raven have been dating for more than a month now, secretly keeping it hidden from their teammates. They both stated that it was best to keep their relationship concealed avoiding any sort of teasing from their teammates but mainly because of Dick. They were never one to get infuriated with each other considering she made him feel not just some ex-league of shadows vigilante but she made him feel whole. He adored her more than anything, if anything the relationship only caused him to become more attentive towards her. Willing to protect her even more, to keep her close within reach. He became more possessive of her. It might’ve sounded like a dreadful desire but she was his.

His shoulders dropped seeing her no longer in sight cutting back a curse, “I’m going to train,” 

Donna’s eyes followed him walking past her, “But it’s like 1 in morn--” she was cut off by the loud slam of the door. She sighed shaking her head, “Just like a married couple,” 

Why did he have to be unreasonable? He never questioned her about her abilities which surprised her when he wasn’t letting her explain what she felt. Which not to mention she was right about, considering Kori did some digging. Turns out the young criminal was telling the truth, even though killing is wrong. He killed them because they had a crucial horrific record that ended up getting erased due to having friends in the precinct that made it all go away letting them run free in the world. She wondered if Damian heard about it but soon realized if he did he would’ve been up in her room by now possibly apologizing for questioning her assumptions. 

Raven’s eyebrows knitted together as she stared at her ceiling missing the soft warmth of Damian who would’ve sneakingly come into her room at times to just cease her skin. she craved it. No! She should be angry with him, not missing him, not missing his touch, his lips on hers, their bodies pressed skin to skin on one another. Damn it

“May I come in?” raven lifted herself up to the sudden familiar voice coming from the entrance of her door. How long has he been standing there that she didn't even notice him opening her door. 

She sits on edge of her bed nodding towards him not wanting to seem like she was just thinking about him. He could tell she was just thinking of something that she wasn’t supposed to by the way her cheeks looked lightly redden avoiding eye contact with him. God she looked beautiful with her hair slightly messy considering the longer length it has now put on. Her body was hugged by her small lavender shorts followed by a matching camisole that straps were so thin and delicate that they fell onto the side of her arms.

His mind drifted to wanting to rip them off to reveal her perfect round breast and just show her who she belonged to. That’s what he wanted. To claim her. He wanted to bend her over. Making her take all of him deep inside her. He wanted to fuck her. Right now. No matter what situation they needed to mend first.
