How To Start Reading Marvel Comics
Okay, so let's say you're a fan of the Marvel movies or games or you just saw Spider-Verse and you want to know how to start reading comics. Hi, welcome! This is one method of getting into comics; it is not the only one. We're going to be heavily relying on digital comics for this one, so if you prefer reading on paper, this might not be for you.
Step One: Pick a Character
This should be easy! Pick a character whose comics you want to read. It doesn't have to be your favorite character of all time; it just needs to be a character you're interested in getting to know a little better. A character is going to work better for this particular method than a team will, although there are plenty of team reading guides if you really want them.
Let's say, for the sake of example, that you just watched the Moon Knight Disney+ series and you want to read some stuff about Moon Knight.
Step Two: Find a Reading List
The very technically advanced way to do this is to Google "[Character] Reading List" or "[Character] Recommended Reading." For Moon Knight, Marvel has an official one that pops up right away.
The official ones are good places to start, but IMO, the best ones are usually from tumblr or Reddit. Comic fans can be very intense, but we also know more about the material than anyone, including Marvel. :) Here's one for Moon Knight.)
Step Three: Understanding the Reading List
Comic names are formatted one of two ways. You might see someone say Moon Knight (vol 7) or Moon Knight (2014). These refer to the same series of comics. They mean that the title of the series is Moon Knight, that it is the 7th series published under that title, and that it started publication in 2014. Moon Knight (vol 1) is Moon Knight (1980), because it's the first run of comics called Moon Knight and it started publication in 1980.
So, how do you know? That's where the wiki comes in. marvel.fandom.com is my best friend. So, when you type "Moon Knight vol 7" into the search bar, it brings up this page. See how it says (2014-2015) at the top? That's how you know that Moon Knight (vol 7) is Moon Knight (2014).
Step Four: Accessing Comics
Now we have to get the comics. We have a number of options:
For digital comics:
Buying digital comics. You can do this on Amazon or Marvel.com. However, this gets expensive real fast - for example, Moon Knight (1980) has 38 issues, and each of those costs $1.99. That's almost $80, just for volume 1.
Marvel Unlimited subscription. This is not a bad deal TBH. It's $10 a month, and they have quite an extensive catalogue. The only problem is that the site takes forever to load and is not easily searchable. Usually, I'll type into Google the name of the exact comic I want to access (e.g. "Moon Knight (1980) #1") and then click on the marvel.com link that comes up.
Piracy. This is the easiest and cheapest option, and thus the most popular. I'm not going to link any sites, but ask a friend or Google and you'll find one easily enough.
Physical comics are also an option, but they are more complicated. Groups of issues are collected in trade paperback collections, but finding which collections contain which issues can be a bit more of a hassle. And then buying those collections can get pricey very quickly.
If you like physical comics and have a public library card, I'd recommend checking out what they have on their shelves. On a Marvel comic, you want to look at the back cover, usually in the lower right-hand corner, and it will tell you which issues are in the comic (e.g. "Collects Moon Knight (2014) #1-6"). You might find some things that were on your reading list, or you might find some comics you'd never have read otherwise. A lot of public libraries (at least in the US) have a larger comic book collection than you'd expect.
Step Five: Have Fun and Be Yourself!
The most important thing to remember is that you are supposed to be having fun. There might be some frustration if you're not used to reading visual media (I know I wasn't), but it should overall be fun. If a comic feels like a slog, you don't have to read it! Maybe you and the person who made the reading list just have different taste. Try a different comic. Try a different character.
Also, remember that it's okay to be confused. You might be jumping around a little bit and so you might not know everything that's going on. This is kind of the perpetual state of reading comics. If you want to double-check the wiki or ask your friendly neighborhood comics blogger, that's totally fine.

Uh oh, this is part 1 of my Trigun Maximum vol 10 thoughts for @trigunbookclub…
Tumblr media
Some thoughts on TriMax chap 57-59 under the cut!
Tumblr media
Okay yep, it’s not looking great for Wolfwood
Tumblr media
Vash is a believer (because if he doesn’t defeat Knives then what were all the fighting for?)
Tumblr media
Huh, it doesn’t looks like Razlo wants Wolfwood to die anymore
Tumblr media
UM UHM UH UHGM-
Tumblr media
Hey, it’s kid Livio/Razlo! And he’s…uh…on a time-out?
Tumblr media
WHAT WHAT WHA-
Tumblr media
Gosh, I hope someone save the caretaker lady and the kids soon…
Tumblr media
We all need at least a cute little moment with all the chaos going on
Tumblr media
The caretaker lady recognizes Wolfwood 🥺
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, where’s Vash anyways?
Tumblr media
HEY, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL-
Tumblr media
SHUT UP, that’s why the chapter’s called Sworn Friend! Cuz Vash is Wolfwood’s sworn friend!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Me when reading Junji Ito’s Uzumaki (it’s scary but it’s pretty goofy ngl)
Tumblr media
BANG BANG BANGITY BANG BANG
Tumblr media
Eugh….look what Wolfwood did to the old guy
Tumblr media
Razlo looks pretty distraught about that tho
Tumblr media
“O-oh, thanks for saving us but uh……what’s up with your arm?”
Tumblr media
H-hey, maybe you can learn to be in harmony with Livio like Marc and Steven from Moon Knight! And maybe you can join Wolfwood’s side so you won’t be lonely, how’s that sound, huh? (^∀^ ;)
Tumblr media
Throwback to Trigun vol 2 chap 6 where we first met Wolfwood
Tumblr media
HIS ASS DID NOT AGREE WITH WHAT I SAID (╬⁽⁽ ⁰ ⁾⁾ Д ⁽⁽ ⁰ ⁾⁾)
Tumblr media
YES YES! SUPER EPIC TEAMWORK!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Hell yeah, they did 😎
Tumblr media
Me when I read through this volume because despite being a first-timer Trigun reader, I still have a feeling something REAL bad is gonna happen in this volume…the ones who are experienced said so! (´д` )
That’s all for part 1! -(๑☆▽☆#)ᕗ
Bonus thoughts: SO….Wolfwood doesn’t look great because of Razlo but don’t worry, Vash appears! He shielded away the bullets with his feathers but like….doesn’t that hurt? Also, Wolfwood’s finally been recognized by the caretaker lady so yaaaaay, reunion! ٩(。θᗨθ。)۶ It warms my heart that Wolfwood said Vash is his friend (´⌣`ʃƪ) , but he had the audacity to bonk Vash after he helped his ass. Anyways, I think Razlo’s pretty cool but he’s uh…..pretty violent. ( ̄ε ̄;)

Hello , just wanna ask if you know more comics where he appears as Mr knight?
I had read the 2014-15 run, and the Lemire run, the 'deadpool kills marvel again' (mk got killed too early :/) and the 'marvel comics present' issue 4, I am also reading the current moon knight run, and also can I ask some music recommendation that I can listen to while reading, (sorry bad English)
I'm so happy and excited to see a Moon Knight question in my box! And your English is perfectly fine. Better than mine on a good day.
You know who you should totally give a follow to? @age-of-moonknight
This guy is amazing and a super Moon Knight fan. If you ask him for an image or what comic something appeared in, he'll get it for you. Like a walking Moon Knight Wikki.
Totally dug around in his archives for this.
THE FIRST appearance as Mr. Knight: Secret Avengers #19 Vol 1 (2010).
Tumblr media
Just a little image or two, but it must have caught someone's eye because just a few years later when Moon Knight needed a jump start and new life we got:
Marvel Now: Moon Knight, Vol 8 (2014-2015) by Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey.
All hail to the mighty Declan Shalvey.
Vol 1: From the Dead, Vol 2: Blackout (by Brian Wood), and Vol 3: In the Night (By Bullen Bunn).
I say OFFICIALLY because age-of-moon knight found a much earlier issue where Mr Knight sort of appeared off handedly in some random issue.
But officially, you'd need to read anything 2014 onwards to get actual Mr. Knight.
You see, after that, who could resist putting that beautiful suit in their art?
The trouble is finding ALL the other things he's appeared in randomly in the background.
I have my sources that atempts to list all the comics MK has ever apeared in, but even they are limited.
There are side things like "Original Sin event", but we all know how I feel about marvel events… (BOOOOO).
Then there's Deadpool's secret secret wars, but I can't tell you how prominantly MK, much less Mr. Knight appears in that either.
Of course we then jump right into All-New, All Different Marvel with Lemire's run. (2016-2017 and he isn't in any background comics at this time).
Smallwood slaps that scrunkle and suit together like it was made to be.
we aren't going to talk about Marvel Legacy which came right after. (I have a HUGE project I'm working on right now that's taking up a lot of painful time regarding Marvel Legacy run… Expect that to start coming otu soon. I'm sorry.)
BUT. During Legacy, we did see him start to pop up in other comics more.
Like the Marvel Comics Presents (2019) #4: This Benjamin Percy story is billed as “what happened next” after Marc “went completely insane and disappeared.”
Then there's Marvel Knights 2018 (not sure if he's Mr. Knight here… Maybe appears in like a page or two?).
Then we skip Age of Khonshu for reasons I've already ranted about…
And that brings us to current events in 2021 with Mackay.
There's also Doctor Strange Vol 6 Issue #2 (ALSO BY MACKAY)
Hope that helps a little?
As for music recommendations? I'm really bad at music recommendations. It really depends on what you like. Anyone want to sound off in the comments on what they listen to while reading Moon Knight?
I like Leonard Cohen if I'm feeling mellow. He's got an amazing old New York quality to his voice and he basically wrote poetry that he turned into songs about his experiences with love, life, being Jewish, and his experiences.
I also pop in songs that get mentioned in the comic, like "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen... Which Marc made into his alarm clock. And it also makes me think that Marc likes that style of music so I slap that playlist up on YouTube and let it go.
And that leads me down to The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran for some reason.
Maybe it's because that was the age that Marc kinda grew up in, depending on what run you are reading.

It's Free Comic Book Day in Australia! I decided to wait an extra week to pick up my orders from the last month (04/23) so there are also some from this week mixed in.

W.I.T.C.H. Vol.30: Part X: Ladies vs. W.I.T.C.H., Volume I
Firstly I want to shout out to Secret Headquarters Comics in Beaconsfield, Victoria. They are incredibly nice and helpful and I've been amazed with them since I started going there.
First mix up was that I didn't realise they had prior years' free comics up with the new issues. So when I said " High Republic Adventures and pointed at the one I saw with that title it turns out I picked the issue from 2021.
Tumblr media
Which is frustrating as someone who is trying to grab all of the Avatar stories and there's supposed to be a new one in the HRA comic this year!
Also I had ordered My Little Pony Vol.1: Big Horseshoes to Fill but they accidentally left it out of my subscriptions. I have a receipt and have emailed them so hopefully it'll be sorted soonish.
I wanted to get a physical copy of Spider-Man 2 #1, the prequel to the upcoming game, but that seems to be US exclusive. I'll have to import it.

Licensed by Tokyopop (expired), Dark Horse (expired), now Kodansha.
CLAMP’s masterwork Magic Knight Rayearth—now in a new translation! This update of the manga classic forms the centerpiece to any CLAMP collection and is also a fantastic introduction to girl-powered adventure manga—perfect for fans of Sailor Moon and She-Ra. While on a field trip to Tokyo Tower, three teenage girls cross a magical portal and are transported to another world called Cefiro. There they are summoned through the last remaining strength of the Princess Emeraude, who believes the trio will become the magic knights who will save her, as prophesied by legend.
